The New York Art Center

Hyperdense buildings today are discovered to lack of sense of social coherence. They are seen as generic, uniform and disconnected superblocks or high-rise towers. Culture is a connector to make the community closer together in a hyperdense environment. To maximize the urgent need of housing, the exterior of the superblock is all normal housing units. The interior becomes nature landscaped parks, cultural centers, offices, sports fields, and auditoriums. Large void sky openings allow light and air to come through the superblock and enable people to enjoy their lives.

The Iceberg is a contemporary de-

sign process of dealing with flooding, densification, and infrastructure issue in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Starting with material casting, and I use cooking foils, plaster, and pigment to create an urban fabric model. The material gives me intelligence: the cracking effects provide me topological logic. When the material reacts with buildings, the cracking impact becomes finer. It becomes thicker and thicker into the water’s edge. The iceberg islands start from small to large. The flooding islands in the front row are designed as a buffer zone to prevent flooding and rising water. The medium size islands and large island are built for housing towers. A new mode of creating a multi-leveled infrastructure platform is connected between each island. The urban canyon voids allow light and air to penetrate into the underground culture centers.

Mountainscape In an age of accelerating urbaniza-

tion and extreme resource shortage, cities must grow inward, and the most urgent challenge for urban designers is to develop new models for densification. Mountainscape is a speculative urban design approach for Dumbo Brooklyn. The project tries to deal with rising water, building a serious of water piers. The block is ambitious and will fulfill with a series of humanmade hill and valleys. The vertical terraces are designed for used for farming and social space. The lower podiums are designed for shopping malls. The project includes many green features include, a community greenhouse, eco-friendly housing, and public areas.

The Reversed Library

In 1898, Brooklyn became one of five boroughs within the City of Greater New York, and the Williamsburg neighborhood was opened to closer connections with the rest of the new city. The site is located at the corner of Wythe Avenue and North 9th Street in Brooklyn, NY. Even though it iscurrently zoned within the manufacturing district, the site is in the process of adopting to its current surroundings and the existing building on the site will be removed in the near future. This is a small public library to serve the general public and address the needs of the young children, teens and adults. It is expected to be open every day of the week and some late evenings to provide a venue for small gatherings, language classes, child development, yoga instruction, etc., as well as the access to printed and electronic resources and periodicals for the whole community.

Upon the Cliff

Artists have been always inspired by nature. Nature and artists have always became close friends.I like the idea of “ Art Colony”. It motivates artists to move away from urban centers and seek out alternative locations where they would be free to express their creativity. I tried to explore architecturally, the relationship between landscape and buildings. How can architecture integrate with the natural landscape? By investigating various possible generic site types like hill, flatland, valley, island and cliff, each topography has its own characteristic related to architecture. I am specifically interested in groups of buildings in linear formats inspired by Renzo Piano’s Centre Culturel Jean-Marie Tjibaou project.

By 2050, 66 percent of the world’s population is projected to be urban. New York as the densest city in the U.S., always under the pressure of finding available space to build. With 14 Millions of people will live in the New York City in 2050, the housing crisis is exceptionally urgent to be solved. Pixel FAR Maps collect GIS data to analyze potentially available space in Dumbo, Brooklyn. In the future, sea level rasing will force the new development to move back inland, and the FAR map suggest that building over the existing infrastructure will be one of the solutions.

MOMA PS1: Dream Catcher

The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 jointly present the MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program, an annual series of competitions that gives emerging architects the opportunity to build projects conceived for MoMA PS1’s courtyard facility in Long Island City, Queens. The site is the MoMA PS1 couryard in Long Island City. It inculudes the triangular shaped area and the sculpture garden and are the only areas that may be built upon. The programs should included Dance Zone, Urban Beach , Chill Zone, Concession, Cafe Tables, and Lounge Zones.

Physical Modeling Process

I proposed and tested a structure system, that gradually generated from one basic cell unit. it multiplies grown and become complex into a structural framed system. The principle of this design is based on the concept of gemetric multiply grow, while fully consider the econolgical meaning behind this transformation. Later on, I applied the same ideas and methodology into my design.
