Junior Field Gunners compete in unique challenge Hot on the heels of the Seniors Challenge which took place at the end of May, HMS Collingwood hosted the annual Junior Leaders Field Gun Competition on Friday 6 June.
T
his competition is very similar to the Royal Navy Field Gun but this competition is predominantly for youths aged 1825, who have either only recently joined the Armed Forces, have just begun apprenticeships with major commercial organisations, or who are studying at local colleges. This year in addition to the Armed Forces crews, teams competed from Network Rail, who were also the event sponsors, BAE Systems, the Princes Trust, Chichester College, the National Sea Cadets and Buxton College. This year’s winners were Network Rail A crew, who also won the award for the fastest time with a run of 1.22.13. Their sister crew Network Rail B won the Plate final. The Junior Leaders Challenge is the only competition open specifically for new recruits and youths, offering them a chance to work as a team and challenge themselves in a unique setting. Building on The Team Works and emphasising the training theme, the teams will train for the competition for just one week, culminating in the finals for which they will run-off against the clock; the winners receiving a special trophy. The crew winning the Endeavour trophy, awarded to the crew who have shown the greatest improvement throughout the competition, were Chichester College, all of whom are currently studying on the Public Services Course. One of their lecturers who was with them throughout the week, Mark Bonar told The Informer; “Throughout the year they make all sorts of excuses about their lack of actions, but within the first day here during training, they put their hand up and say ‘It was me’ if they make a mistake in the drill, they immediately recognise the importance of taking responsibility for their actions. This competition is great, we put forward all levels into our crew, not just the elite athletes and they gain so much from it, and we are respected by all the crews competing.” On addressing the Field Gun crews Guest of Honour Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral David Steel CBE said; “What you have demonstrated to me is what it takes to make it in the Royal Navy. What I have seen is team spirit in abundance. You have been absolutely magnificent, I salute you.” It is hoped that the enthusiasm and professionalism on display by the teams will encourage them to take part in the main Royal Navy Field Gun Competition in future years.

Local musician attends Downing Street reception
B
oyd Hayward, a drummer from Warsash, who lost his sister to Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy, recently attended a 10 Downing Street reception hosted by Samantha Cameron. The night launched a £165,000 fundraising appeal into a sleep monitoring device for vital research that could help prevent the deaths of up to 500 of the 1150 who lose their lives to epilepsy in the UK each year. Boyd’s sister Rebecca Hayward was only 28 when she died from SUDEP in June 2012. Since her death, Boyd has been working with epilepsy charity SUDEP Action to raise awareness and support research into this condition.
Boyd (far left) at Number 10 reception and (inset) with his sister Rebecca
Boyd told The informer “Rebecca took an interest in drumming before I did and opened a door for me which has shaped my life. I plan to continue my work with SUDEP Action and I’m grateful that her legacy lives on through my drumming. She’ll never be forgotten.” To help please visit http://www.justgiving.com/Rebeccaspage

What is green, attractive & inexpensive?
Decorative aggregates! With such a comprehensive selection of different textures, beautiful natural colours and sizes available you can create stunning effects in small, urban, and courtyard gardens.
Y
ou can lay pebbles and aggregates over a large area, which is a great sustainable alternative to a lawn, as rainwater will naturally drain away just as it does through grass. Compliment water features by surrounding them with the colourful hues of aggregates, or use a mixture of sandstone setts and different size paving slabs to make an attractive and interesting path. Paths are an integral to our whole garden, as they are not only functional but also provide focal points and boundaries, while bringing colour and texture to soft landscaping. Decorative aggregates, pebbles and gravel are an economic alternative to laying a brick or stone path, and you can use natural stone stepping-stones across your lawn to create patterns and to lead the eye down the garden. Perhaps you have a north facing area in your garden where nothing agrees to grow? If so, creating an imaginative area of hard landscaping will provide an attractive and low maintenance option. The best bit of all is you can lay these materials so quickly and easily you can transform your garden almost overnight!

o you want to make changes to your existing kitchen or bedroom which don’t cost a fortune and make the most of what you already have? We all want our homes to look as good as possible and it is a well documented fact that a smart, wellappointed kitchen is one of the rooms which can really add value to your home.
Steve and Gill Hudson have been running Kitchen and Bedroom Transformations since the beginning of 2005. A solid client base has been built so that a large proportion of work comes from referrals, or customers returning for another room to be ’transformed’. This is how they want to grow their business as it proves how many loyal, happy customers they have. From changing doors or worktops, through to complete new kitchens or bedrooms, visit their showroom or contact them for honest advice and pricing – they think you will be very pleasantly surprised at what can be achieved with your budget. oach Lynda Reid and her team of 35 swimmers made the short journey to Waterlooville where they endured sweltering temperatures for the Midsummer swim meet on Sunday 22nd June. The team made the coach and supporting parents very happy by bringing home a trophy and a box load of medals. The swimmers train hard under Lynda and the training certainly is paying off as they brought home 16 medals and slashed seconds of their previous best times. It was the first competitive swimming meet for Grace Goddard, Isla Croll and Imogen Crowney and it was good for them to witness the success of their fellow team mates to motivate them. All three of the new swimmers gained personal bests in most of their races. Jack Newton won bronze for 100M fly; Kyle Kirkland only just turned 10 years amazed us as well as himself earning gold medals in 50M breast, 100M breast, 100M back, 50 back, silver in 100 Free and bronze in 50 free.

Shannon Lamb was well and truly at her best as she managed to get gold medals for 100 IM, 200 free and 100 free and a bronze for her 50 free age 10 year old category. Thomas Larby true to form like a fish in water successfully won silver 100 IM, silver 50 breast, bronze 50 fly and bronze 50 back age 9/10 category. Massive congratulations to Harrison Kennedy, it’s been a long time coming but due to much hard work and commitment he got his first medal which was bronze in 100 IM well done and hope you now get many more. Some fantastic personal bests which included James Hall who knocked a whopping 15 seconds off his 200m front and finally after months of trying broke his PB in 50 breast taking the time to under 50 seconds. The transition from silver to gold squad has proved successful for Joshua Beaudro as he knocked a massive 14 seconds of his 200M free, the boy did good! The final reward for the club at this meet was the trophy for Top visiting club. Thomas Larby managed second position with Joshua closely behind in 5th meaning the team moved to the top to secure the trophy.

How Clean Is Your Tile? N
ATURAL Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and are worth every penny of your investment! but what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’? Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up? Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc. Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid. Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor? It can be surprising how, even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts dirt which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again? The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever! And what if the grout is also badly stained? No problem, they can even re-colour the grout for you from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional coating of an impregnating sealer, which sinks into the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay, which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom.
“Don’t Fret About Your Dirty Stone Or Ceramic Tile Floors… We Can Bring Them Back To Life.” YES!! Including Those Filthy Grout Lines - And They Can Apply A Sealer To Keep Them Looking That Great Longer!
Let the Tile Doctor clean and protect for you. Call now on 0800 695 695 9 or visit www.hampshiretiledoctor.co.uk, for a free ‘demo’!

The Computer Trainer By Paul Foley Tablets: Which one to take?
Q: Help! My children want to buy me a tablet computer for my upcoming birthday but there are so many to choose from I am bewildered at the thought of it! What should I go for? A: Ever since Apple launched the iPad, tablets have been taking the world by storm. Since the iPad many tablets have hit the markets. As ever, a lot comes down to your budget, but with this equipment the motto ‘you get what you pay for’ is certainly true. At the top end the ‘iPad Air’ costs £399 upwards. A cheaper option is the new mini iPad, which retails at £249 upwards. Elsewhere the Samsung Galaxy Note has become a true rival to the iPad, with a fantastic screen and more flexibility with the programs (called ‘apps’) you can have on it. They start at around £300. Tesco’s Hudl laptop is very popular and has good reviews, as well as Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, both retailing at only £119 – but don’t expect the top-end quality of the iPad or Galaxy. That said, if you only want to send some emails, play music and do a bit of online shopping, you could do far worse than some of the solid lower-end contenders. Paul Foley is the local computer tutor for Silver Training in the Southampton area. He can come to your home for 1:1 lessons on any device and for any topic; shopping, email, skype and more. Charges are £35 per hour including training materials. Please call 02380 001 290 to enquire. Do you have a technological dilemma? A burning computer question? Graham Delwyn Kershaw
G
raham sadly passed away in the early hours of June 4th, at home after a tough battle with cancer. He will be so sadly missed by all.
Graham was born on the Isle of Man in 1949 and the family soon moved south before setting up home in Hill head. On leaving school, Graham began work in the chemical industry but his great passion was always motorcycles. A very tragic motorcycle accident led to the death of one of Graham’s closest friends and it inspired him to improve road safety for bikers which heralded the birth of Motag Motorcycle Training. His passion for improvement led him to serve on many committees and government advisory forums. Away from the workplace, Graham played the clarinet, enjoyed good food and was a very successful wine maker. In fact the “Chateau Kershaw Orange” was more effective than any pain killer available. As we mourn his passing, we know his legacy will live on in the improvements he made to road safety and the riding quality of many he was responsible for training. The company Graham created will relentlessly pursue this task in his memory.
Whiteley Computer Club trains whizz kids of tomorrow
A
new computer club for children in Whiteley has been made possible after donations from County Councillors and a grant from Fareham community funding totalling £2,100.
To get started the volunteer led club needed to purchase various pieces of computer equipment. They were able to buy software, monitors, 8 computers, a projector and printer after a contribution of £700 from the Fareham Community Fund and donations from HCC councillors Sean Woodward and Patricia Stallard. Cllr Sean Woodward, who is also Leader of Fareham Borough Council, said he was glad to contribute as; “the club is a worthy project that recognises the advantages of developing technical skills in a rapidly evolving digital age” The clubs application was supported by local ward councillor David Swanbrow, who said: ‘It is great to see the Whiteley Computer Club up and running at the Whiteley Community Centre. Initiatives like this, that provide an opportunity for local children to socialise and learn new skills, are a great use of the community fund”. Any resident, or organisation based in the Fareham Borough can apply to the Community Fund for money for one off purchases. Fareham Borough Council encourages anyone with a project that benefits their local community or environment within the Borough of Fareham to find out more about funding support. Kinetico flowing with optimism and success A more prosperous financial climate has seen many businesses on the upturn and local Park Gate based business Kinetico is certainly one of them. With offices on Park Gate Business Park, Kinetico has 40 years experience in the water treatment industry. It is a world-leader in domestic and commercial water treatment solutions and is passionate about changing lives through better water. The UK team is relatively small but rapidly growing having taken on three new employees over the past six months to cope with its 16% growth in sales this year. With a growing demand for its products both from residential and commercial customers such as the Savoy and Buckingham Palace, Kinetico’s success comes on the back of its investment in employees, innovative marketing programmes and product innovation. Having established itself as one of the market leaders in the premium water softener category, Kinetico is turning its attention to filtered water systems for the home. Research commissioned by Kinetico found that UK consumers are increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of bottled water and the impurities found in their water at home. To stay ahead of the game, Kinetico is excited to launch its latest innovation in water filters – the Kube. A new concept for the UK market that allows you to attach the filter system to your existing tap making it very easy to install, and unlike bottled and jug filtered water, it will give you a plentiful supply of crystal clear, clean and delicious tasting water 24 hours a day. Mark Nepstad, Director at Kinetico said, “We successfully launched Kube in north America where it’s doing very well. This gives us great encouragement and we’re extremely pleased to bring such an innovative
product to the UK market.” He added “Over the coming months and into next year we will continue to grow with demand and expand the team, hopefully offering employment opportunities to more experienced and talented people in the Hampshire area.”

Whiteley gets Flashmobbed
Is there anyone to take care of us?
I
n January 2014, Pharrell Williams had just released his song ‘Happy’, we had non-stop rain and so Warsash resident Julia Rose was wondering how she could make a miserable month into a ‘happy’ one. Julia had always wanted to see a Flash mob, but as they are not advertised it seemed impossible. She put ‘Happy’ and ‘Flash mob’ together and started planning her own for June so hopefully the sun would shine. A date was set for Saturday 21st June. 6 months of planning and 9 weeks of rehearsals later, with a very patient choreographer they were ready. Everyone had different reasons for doing it, some because it was on their ‘wish list’, some because they loved the exercise, others just wanted to have a good laugh. Julia said: “it has been the most amazing experience for me and for everyone who took part including those behind the scenes. They were friends who put the music together, they supplied copies of the music and put it on to a big amp and speaker. Lisa and Amber Price taught us the routine and gave up their free time. A big thank you to Whiteley Village for letting us do it.” When it was all over they shared a picnic on the field. They had become good friends through the experience. Every week, everyone who rehearsed paid a £1 donation to ‘The Make A Wish Foundation’. With 6 buckets collecting on the day they raised a total of £500 for the charity.
L
izzy and Cokie are sadly victims of cruelty and neglect. They have been rescued and are now in care, where they are responding well to love and attention. They are between 8 and 10 years old. Both have very sweet characters and would so appreciate a happy future with owners who will give them the love and security they rightly deserve. Anyone who would have patience with them, considering their unhappy past, and has a safe area with a garden for them when settled and would be interested in adopting these two lovely cats should please contact: 02380 435855.

Flying Doctors to the rescue They had only popped down to the seafront for an ice cream and a stroll in the all too rare summer sunshine, but locals and visitors to Lee-on-the-Solent waterfront had a surprise as, flying in low and landing on the narrow grass strip on the cliff top, there was the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

Thankfully the crew were not needed on this occasion and the crowds stood back as the rotors began to turn and the helicopter took to the skies once again to return to its Thruxton base. Some time ago for our sister magazine, Solent Life, we visited the Thruxton base and spoke with the crews. Pilot Dave Bronniman, who was the airman who landed at Lee on this occasion, was the first person we spoke to at their airfield. “If the weather is good then we can reach the furthest point of our area, the southern coast of the Isle of Wight, in around 20 minutes. From there we can then get the patient to wherever they can receive the best treatment. We had a sailor with severe burns and so instead of taking him to the nearest hospital which was Southampton we were able to fly him direct to the burns unit at Odstock Hospital near Salisbury.” he said. Pilot and crew will tell visitors it is very business-like at the airfield. It was explained that there is always an urgency but never a panic. We were told, “It’s not like you see in the Battle of Britain movie where the claxon sounds and everyone runs around to the cries of ‘Scramble, Scramble, Scramble’. Every time the aircraft takes off they have to go through a brief pre-flight check to make sure the aircraft is airworthy while one of

It takes some £125,000 of donated funds each month to keep the Air Ambulance in the air. The Hampshire Air Ambulance went live in July 2007 and began by flying for just five days each week. It did not fly on Tuesdays or Wednesdays because statistics showed that they were the quietest days for accidents and call outs, the entire operation is funded entirely from public donations. The paramedics are paid for by the NHS but everything else on board from the defibrillator to the plasters are paid for out of the funds the charity raises. The helicopter and the pilot are leased from a company called Bond and as Dave explained, in the few moments we had with him on the ground. “I could earn a great deal more by flying backwards and forwards to the oil rigs, but this job is so much more worthwhile, I get a massive amount of pride in this job.” Dave is army trained and has flown missions in places such as war torn Bosnia so his credentials are impeccable. Annual Rotary KidsOut adventure for local children
Are you brave enough to meet The Gruffalo?
T
I
t was a memorable day for children from Fareham and across the south when 1,456 disadvantaged youngsters with 1,178 teachers and carers enjoyed a free trip to Paultons Park for this year’s Rotary KidsOut day. These children have an exciting day out and Rotary members play a vital role in ensuring the event is a huge success. This annual event saw the children, including groups from two Fareham schools, descend on the family theme park for a fun-filled day of rides and attractions. Helpers included Rotarians dressed as clowns while others supported the groups around the Park – not least by serving up more than 2,000 packed lunches! The Mayor of Fareham Councillor David Norris attended the send-off and wished them all a fabulous day! President of the Rotary Club of Fareham, Pamela Bryant, told The Informer; “it is always good to take local children to this special event and they enjoyed the day to the full. Seeing them all having so much fun makes it most worthwhile”. For further details on Rotary please see their website at www.farehamrotary.com
hose brave enough to enter the deep, dark wood at Moors Valley Country Park, near Ringwood on Friday 11 July could well meet up with The Gruffalo. He’s making a special visit to the Park as part of The Gruffalo’s 15th anniversary celebrations and will be in the woods from 3.30 – 6pm. Internationally recognised, The Gruffalo is the star of Julia Donaldson’s children’s books and has become a firm favourite with both children and adults alike since the first story was published in 1999. As well as the special live visit, Moors Valley is also one of a handful of locations in the UK to host a giant wooden Gruffalo sculpture. Carved from sustainable timber, and only recently unveiled, the eight foot giant is one of 15 different sculptures that can now be found in forests throughout the UK following a special collaboration with the Forestry Commission. With his “terrible tusks, and terrible claws, and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws” this literary giant is a great addition to family photos. Another well-loved Julia Donaldson character will be joining the fun later in the year with the opening of a new ‘Gruffalo’s Child Trail’. The activity trail, featuring the adventures of the Gruffalo’s Child as she ignores her father’s warning about the big bad mouse, will open on 3 October and be in place until the end of February 2015. Education Ranger Katie Davies told The Informer; “We are very excited that Moors Valley is able to play such a big part in The Gruffalo’s 15th anniversary and we know that children particularly enjoy meeting the ‘monster’ from the prize-winning books. Come autumn, the Park will provide the perfect winter woodland setting for The Gruffalo’s Child as she tiptoes out into the wild snowy night.” For further details visit the website www.moors-valley.co.uk

The place to get wise advice E verybody is always ready to offer advice when it is needed, especially well-meaning friends and family, but how much of that advice is worthwhile when the problems seem to be mounting up on your doorstep? The simple answer is that there is very little worth. There is one organisation that is ready willing and able to offer advice on everything from debt to homelessness and from employment to all types of legal matters; the Citizens Advice Bureau, or CAB. There is almost a CAB office around every corner and this charitable organisation is packed with well-informed volunteers, and if they do not have the answer then they know someone who does! Not only that but such is the respect and trust for this organisation that policy makers, businesses, local authorities and even some individuals listen to what they have to say. The CAB have been handing out sage advice since the war years of 1939; it was four years earlier that the then Government was considering the need for an information service linked to the very new social welfare service. Then in 1938 as war loomed across Europe a group was established to meet the needs of the civilian population during war time; on 3rd September War was declared and the following day the first 200 bureaux were opened. From the very beginning the volunteer run service was working from public buildings as well as private houses and within three years over a thousand such bureau were operating, there was even one held in a converted horse box that parked near to bombed out areas. During those war years they were answering queries on matters such as lost ration books, homelessness, evacuation, and even looking for missing relatives and prisoners of war. Debt was also a big problem regularly brought to the CAB
due to the drop in family incomes following the Call-Up. To this day the CAB still deliver their advice services, but now it is from close to 3,500 community locations across England and Wales, and they continue helping people to resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free advice and information, and by influencing policymakers. The network of advisors relies on 22,200 trained volunteers to keep the service running, and provides advice in person as well as by phone, in people’s homes and via the internet. Visits to www.adviceguide.org.uk, their self-help website, have risen to over 11 million.

First brought into mass appeal by garden and housing make-over TV shows decking remains a popular DIY summer must build and the place to sit and enjoy those balmy summer evenings. It may be that your garden could do with that bit more entertaining space and so decking, it seems, is still a popular choice for those keen to extend their living space outdoors. All DIY retailers have a vast range of decking products that will help you to turn your garden into an outdoor room with a view. Whatever your project or budget there is a selection of boards, tiles, kits and accessories that will get you started. The same decking kits can also be used to create raised vegetable beds if you prefer a little bit of self-sufficiency. Boards, many of which are reversible to give smooth or ridged finish, joists and beams are all available on their own or in many cases in kit form. Now it is not simply a case of planking to complete the surface of your decking but many stockists also carry artificial grass or rubber matting for that alternative topping to your deck area. If you’re after a more compact deck, then complete deck kits will take the stress out of buying and building. Everything you need is available from the screws and fittings to glass, lattice work and rope to create the fencing around your decking to finish it off and make it that little safer if it is a raised deck. Once built weekends and evenings can be spent entertaining or just having a place to sit and chill out with a glass of chilled wine and a barbeque.

Caroline from Creations freelance hairdressing had an amazing idea - to showcase some selected business in the area in a bespoke photo shoot.

he themes were “Woodland” and “Glamour”. Each company involved had a major part in making this photo shoot come to life, sourcing their inspiration from many areas. The exquisite gowns were supplied by The Bridal Mill in Botley, certainly a place to go when you are in need of something beautiful to wear.
The Caci Jowl Lift Specifically targets those loose muscles around the jawline, using quad probe applicators designed to double the lifting action of the Caci treatment system, therefore enhancing the results and reducing treatment time. The 15 minute facial treatment helps improve the appearance of sagging jowls by using the quad probes which have been specifically developed to target the muscles around the jawline. They emit tiny electrical impulses to lift, firm and redefine the facial contours. You can have the treatment incorporated in the full facial Caci treatment for an extra £15 or as a stand alone treatment for £25, it is completely painless and the results are superb.
Call the salon today for more information.

The stunning makeup was by Amanda of Botley and the gorgeous hair by Caroline at Creations. The wonderful flowers were supplied by Luv Flowers in Botley, hand made and beautifully designed. Antony at Lightbox Studios from West End took some amazing pictures and as you can see the models effortlessly show off all the hard work involved. Of course the setting played a huge part and Winslowe House in West End was the perfect venue, with beautiful gardens, a real hidden gem local to us all. All in all the day was a huge success. There are many ways to protect yourself and the first of these is to stay hydrated, while sitting in the sun your body tends to lose a lot of its moisture and that needs to be regularly replenished so always keep cool water to hand. On that point be careful not to leave your bottled water in the sun too long or in the car as the heat on the plastic tends to affect the water. Many people tend to opt for ice-cold sparkling, or aerated, water to quench the thirst; but many of these drinks contain sugar and that is also not good for your skin. Just drink fresh, still water and even add a squeeze of lime which will be a more thirst quenching way of staying hydrated. Also avoid diuretic drinks such as alcohol and caffeine as they will reduce the water in your body system. Many find a good even tan to be attractive but you still need to ensure that all-important sun screen is applied at least 30 minutes before going out into the sun. If you are not sure which protection factor will suit your skin type then check with your pharmacist. If you are out in the sun for any extended time that will need topping up from time to time. It is more important during the summer months to exfoliate to remove the dead skin which will also improve the blood circulation to your face. There are many cosmetic facial scrubs on the market and again ask if you are not sure which one will suit your skin. Finally enjoy the summer but beware that the glorious sunshine can be the enemy to a healthy skin, so take precautions, don’t spend too long in the sun and keep hydrated and protected with high factor skin screens.

he I Body Clinic based in Hill Head Fareham uses the latest non surgical treatments to help aid weight loss. One of the treatments which they specialise in is the Ultra i-Lipo Laser Lipoysis. This provides a relaxing pain free treatment that mimics your body during natural weight loss, allowing you to reduce fatty deposits in specific ‘trouble spots’ that your normal diet and exercise regime may not be managing. In addition the Ultra i-Lipo also helps with skin tightening, stretch mark correction and collagen toning. Independent clinical studies have shown i-Lipo to be, in some cases, comparable to results achieved by liposuction. Ultrasound imagery shows up to 30% reduction in the fat layer depth after just one treatment. For more information or to book your appointment please call 01329 668122

I lost 3 Stone Without Dieting! My name is Tracy. I’m 43 and I’ve lost 3 stone with the Easyloss Programme! I’ve always struggled with my weight. As a teenager I was told I was big boned not fat. When I became pregnant at 26, it was the perfect excuse to eat all those things I’d deprived myself of…the fridge was stacked with chocolate and sweets! After 2 kids I was struggling to get into an 18 and heading for a size 20. I tried loads of diets, but nothing helped. I was then diagnosed with an under active thyroid, so my weight took a back seat while I sorted that out. Then in September 2012, sitting in yet another ‘fat’ dress, I decided it really was time to lose weight once and for all! I found the Easy Loss Programme and even after reading rave reviews I was still sceptical. Hypnosis to lose weight…really? Finally, I decided to give it a try and within a week I noticed a difference! I simply followed four simple guidelines and enjoyed the relaxing hypnotherapy sessions with Sue at Hampshire Hypnotherapy Centre. I never looked back! I’ve now lost 3st! I am now a size 8/10 for the first time since I don’t know when! I’m fitter, happier and healthier than I have ever been! I can’t thank James, Sue and the team enough without them I am sure I would still be striving for weight loss. I am maintaining easily and really don’t worry about what I weigh anymore. I have gained confidence along with the weight loss. The Easyloss Weight Loss Programme is available at Hampshire Hypnotherapy Centre in Whiteley. Local Gig in support Preschool explorers of Autism Hampshire L
ocal Lady Tracey Williams and her colleague Jackie Maffin, have organised a Charity Gig for Saturday 12th July at the Locksheath Working Men’s Club, Duncan Road, Park Gate. The chosen charity is Autism Hampshire and they have invited local bands to perform whose ages range from 14-25. The bands are: North Division (Brookfield Students) Sierra Polar (Brookfield Students) Amy Marsden (Brookfield Student who is also a finalist in the Teenstar Singing Competition which takes place on 19th July at Birmingham) Chocolate Grit Atlantic (former Brookfield Students) Capital Fuzz (finalists at Battle of the Bands and are playing at the Gosport Festival)
T
he children from Warsash Victory Hall Pre-school have explored their local area.
Firstly with their parents, when they plotted their journey to pre-school. Then off on a bumpy bus ride to Locksheath Centre, spending time in the library, viewing the local shops, which included a drink and cake by courtesy of Waitrose. On Friday they had the opportunity to view the surrounding area from the dizzy heights of the Clock Tower. What a brilliant view over the village and up the river. Many thanks to parents in supporting this theme.
Some band members with Tracey Williams and Jackie Maffin
Tracey is working closely with Hannah Godfrey from Autism Hampshire and we hope to raise valuable funds and awareness for this local Charity. Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, other people. It also affects how they make sense of the world around them. People with autism have said that the world, to them, is a mass of people, places and events which they struggle to make sense of, and which can cause them considerable anxiety. The three main areas of difficulty which all people with autism share are sometimes known as the ‘triad of impairments’. They are: difficulty with social communication, difficulty with social interaction and difficulty with social imagination. It can be hard to create awareness of autism as people with the condition do not ‘look’ disabled: parents of children with autism often say that other people simply think their child is naughty; while adults find that they are misunderstood. All people with autism can benefit from a timely diagnosis and access to appropriate services and support. Autism Hampshire is committed to delivering high quality autism focussed services in a timely, efficient and effective manner to their students, adult service users, their families and others who have an interest in supporting people within the autism spectrum. They see quality as the whole organisation working together and with others to ensure that they do the right things in the right way. Tickets are £5 and can be purchased from the Locksheath Working Men’s Club or from Tracey Williams on 07906 626728. There will also be a raffle with some great prizes so they hope to raise lots of money and create a good community feeling!

Strumming for charity
Formed in 2012 and based in Gosport, the Stokes Bay Strummers are a ukulele group who originally met up to practice and play for fun. But as confidence grew, so did the gigs and the idea that they should perform for worthwhile causes proved to be a winner. All of the donations they receive go to charity and this year their nominated charity is the Rowans hospice. Over the four years that they have been performing they have raised well over £6000, with donations going to the Rainbow Centre, RNLI, Hampshire First Responders, GAFIRS, Harbour Cancer Support, ICANGO transport for the elderly and the Hants and IOW Air Ambulance. On Friday 20th June this year, the group appeared live on Radio Solent’s Katy Martin show to promote a uke-aid charity gig for the basics food bank, it was a great success. Entry was not by ticket but with items of food. In October the Strummers are putting on the Gosport Ukulele Music Festival, GUMF for short. Appearing will be The Southampton Jam, Pompey Pluckers, a group from Poole as well as solo artists. This month a founder member, Alan Hawxwell told The Informer about the band’s experiences.
T
he Stokes Bay Strummers were formed after 8 of us attended a ukulele beginners course at the Discovery in Gosport. We then went on to complete the intermediate class and decided to form the band. Practice was held every Thursday night in a small back room of a music shop in Gosport. The room was not much bigger than a broom cupboard, it was like a fridge in the winter and an oven in the summer.

As our numbers swelled and we were sitting on each other’s shoulders, various other venues were tried and we now practice in the guide hut in Stubbington and the ALVERBANK in Alverstoke. The band now has 26 members so the extra space is much appreciated. Our first real gig was in the ALVERBANK hotel restaurant, a bit intimidating as the mayor and mayoress were in attendance and the

majority of us could only play three chords. Needless to say the audience attention span diminished somewhat as the gig went on. Most of the band are from the Gosport, Lee-on-the-Solent, Stubington and Fareham area, it’s only Vic Colley who has an SO post code but we don’t hold it against him. The members are mostly all retired, although we have just recruited my grandson Max, who is ten and brings our average age down considerably. Their previous occupations range from teachers, policemen, naval officers and a marshall arts instructor to painters and decorators. Some of the members had never played any kind of instrument before but others are accomplished musicians. We have played over 120 gigs at various venues and events that include care homes wedding/birthday/anniversary parties, the latest and one of the most unusual was in a big top at the HMS Sultan summer show, where the main event was a demonstration of the monster trucks... which they decided to put on at the same times as we were playing. Needless
to say that we didn’t have a very big audience for that performance! Another big gig was last year’s Victorious Festival in Portsmouth dockyard, we were on the same bill as Charlotte Church, and Level 42. Not on the same stage but on the same poster. We played in the real ale beer hall in the afternoon in front about 500 tiddly people, a great gig! The band take no money at all, we are self funding through weekly subscriptions, but things like uniforms, transport, sound, equipment and practice rooms are all extras that have to come out of the members’ own pockets, so if there are any rich business people out there who want to sponsor us please feel free (our PA needs upgrading). Local Post Officer retires after 47 year’s service
Congratulations and very best wishes to Joy Pritchard who retires this month after 47 years dedicated service in Botley Post Office.
J
oy joined the Post Office straight from school in 1967 when it was in a privately owned shop and situated on the other side of the street from where it is now in the Co-op in Botley Square. In those days it was not only a Post Office but a sweet shop and also a sorting office where all the postmen for the surrounding district sorted out the mail two or three times a day for delivery. She remembers being very apprehensive when she first started work. The Post Office then was owned by Mr and Mrs Rowland and, on her first day, Mrs Rowland showed her around and supervised her as she started behind the sweet shop counter before progressing to the Post Office counter.
scrapped the pension books and the child allowance books. She misses the queues to the counter which were a meeting place for the community to interact and chat. Joy told The Informer she was looking forward to her retirement but that she hoped to still do a few hours in the Post Office to “keep her hand in and her mind working”. She is known by many in Botley. To both the young and the old she is “Joy of the Post Office”. She has seen children change into mothers and fathers and then grandparents, two and three generations passing through the Post Office doors. It is certain the people of Botley will be thanking Joy for many years of excellent service and wishing her a happy retirement.
Joy at work in 2001
Although her basic role, advising and serving customers, has not changed in all her years there, Joy says she still misses the “old money”, pounds, shillings and pence. She thinks it had more character than our decimal currency. While her basic job has changed little over the years she did find the transition to computers a bit difficult and very impersonal. She also thinks that one of the worst things to happen was when the Post Office

Motoring Auto Brite “express bodyshop”, the 1st year...
I
t is now over a year, since Auto Brite ceased being a mobile paint repair service for vehicles, where they carried out repairs on the customers’ driveway, and became an “Express Bodyshop”, specialising in minor car body repairs, but carried out in purpose built premises. 19 years of mobile experience, where every repair had to be spot on, first time, has ensured every repair has run smoothly, repaired quickly, but not rushed. Focusing on the same, smaller type of work that has kept Auto Brite in business since 1994, but without the uncertainty of trying to work outside with our wonderful weather, has proven to be a wise move. Last year was the busiest to date! Since moving indoors, Auto Brite has been able to add services which were not viable as a mobile unit. They now repair split plastics with a permanent, insurance approved stapling system, saving unnecessary new bumpers/lights/trims. They offer a headlight refurbishment, to restore lights which have started to craze or peel and lose their colour. They also repair motorbike panels and alloy wheels. Their spotless work environment also ensures they can apply paint sealants to new vehicles in the way they were designed to be used, as well as machine polish paintwork to remove everyday scratches. Their website and Facebook page show examples of repairs they carries out every day. They look forward to many more years, indoors!

International Autojumble returns to Beaulieu
Beaulieu’s world-famous International Autojumble - the biggest sale of motoring items this side of the Atlantic - is back for its 48th year on the 6th and 7th September.
T
aking place in Beaulieu’s picturesque parkland, this is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the motoring calendar and a ‘must’ visit for all veteran, vintage and classic vehicle enthusiasts. The event continues to grow in popularity with 38,000 people descending on Beaulieu last year for the two day show and in May, the event won a Silver Award in the Tourism Event of the Year category at the prestigious Visit England Awards for Excellence. Beaulieu’s Events Manager, Judith Maddox, told The Informer; “The International Autojumble, first held in 1967, is the oldest and most prestigious of our events and held in high regard within the motoring industry so it is especially rewarding for it also to be recognised by the tourism industry as one of the leading tourism events in England.” All the traditional elements of the International Autojumble will be present; visit the Automart with up to 200 vehicles on sale, from restoration projects to concours condition vehicles or take a look around the Dealermart, selling a range of classic cars. On Saturday, Bonhams auction house will be running their popular sale of collectors’ cars, motorcycles and automobilia. If you fancy bidding on an item or two please bear in mind that you can only gain entry with a catalogue and Sunday will welcome Trunk Traders, with amateur autojumblers selling surplus motoring items from their car boots. This is a great place to find hidden motoring gems at bargain prices, so don’t miss it! Alternatively, if you need to clear space in your garage, why not book a space in Trunk Traders for yourself? Admission to Beaulieu on both days will be from 8.30am, when visitors will be able to access the National Motor Museum and enjoy breakfast in the Brabazon Restaurant. The event is open from 10am – 5pm on Saturday, and 9.30am – 4.30pm on Sunday. On the day inclusive ticket prices are one day adult, £14.70 (Sat), £13.20 (Sun), one day child, £9.20 (Sat) and £9 (Sun), less if purchased in advance online at www.beaulieushop.co.uk or by telephone on 01590 612888 until 5pm on 5th September. A low maintenance solution for professionals or families who want an attractive garden without the upkeep, artificial grass can provide this easy yet aesthetically pleasing solution. Artificial grass will look great for years and won’t be killed by pets or children running across it or digging their heels in! This is particularly helpful to those trying to sell their house, or those who just don’t have the time to mow or water their lawn in this constantly changing weather. Of course, it isn’t real grass and, as a Landscaper with over 10 years in the industry, it would be silly to suggest otherwise. However, this solution is certainly becoming of increasing interest and is something recommended to those who want the best of both worlds. Literal Landscapes, visionary landscape garden design, construction and maintenance company; are gaining a great reputation around The Informer area for finding tailored solutions such as this for families and companies alike through expert garden design, build and maintenance.Literal Landscapes’ mission is to maximise the potential of your outdoor space, however big or small. It’s playtime for all ages
with the National Trust in Hampshire this summer
W
hatever your age, summer is the time most likely to bring out the inner child that lurks inside us all. When the sun is out, the days are long and the skies are blue, it’s not only children who want to come out to play. Often better known for its historic houses and collections, the National Trust is doing more and more to offer visitors of all ages the chance to unwind and relax in their beautiful gardens, parkland and countryside, with natural play areas, quiz trails and other family attractions throughout the school holidays. Back by popular demand is the Trust’s phenomenally successful challenge, 50 things to do before you’re 11¾, giving children the chance to reconnect with nature through simple pleasures such as climbing a tree, skimming a stone and making a woodland den. Families can pick up free scrapbooks at all participating properties and try any of the outdoor tasks under their own steam, or take part in a host of organised activities throughout the summer. There’s also a handy local planner to download, to help you decide where to go. There’s plenty of fun for grown-ups too. Many National Trust gardens are at their colourful best in summer with plenty of cool, shady spots, perfect for picnics and chilling out and once again Outdoor theatre is one of the highlights of the National Trust’s summer season, so take some friends, relax on the lawn, and enjoy an evening of riotous entertainment. There is family fun at Mottisfont this summer, the stunning house and grounds on the outskirts of Romsey. Quentin Blake and Friends: 19 July to 14 September, one of the nation’s best-loved artists comes to Mottisfont in a new exhibition of work alongside other leading contemporary children’s illustrators. Visitors can see for the first time 21 new drawings created by Quentin for the hit West End production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Families can take inspiration from the

exhibition and set off on an epic imaginative story trail around the house and grounds, creating their own illustrated books as they go. Mottisfont has always been popular for its outdoor theatre and the curtain rises on a summer season of storytelling for both children and adults, set in an idyllic locations. On the picturesque lawns alongside the sparkling River Test, you’ll discover: The Tempest: 25 July, 7–9.15pm, adults £16, children £8, book on 0844 249 1895 Then join the Pantaloons Theatre Company on a voyage to an enchanted island full of adventure, romance, magic…and monsters! The criticallyacclaimed Pantaloons put their own unique and hilarious twist on Shakespeare’s tale of shipwrecks, sorcerers and silly servants. Expect music, mayhem, poetry and puppetry. The History of Britain: 23 August, 7–9.15pm, adults £16, children £8, book on 0844 249 1895. Join the Pantaloons for their crazy take on the history of Britain, with loads of laughs along the way. Harold II and William the Conqueror don’t see eye to eye, Henry VIII decides five marriages just isn’t enough, and Queen Victoria is most certainly not amused. This show races through the centuries with The Pantaloons’ distinctive chaotic energy.

Exbury’s secret treasures waiting to be discovered this summer
This very special 200 acre woodland garden in the New Forest is renowned the world over for its unrivalled collections of spring and early summer flowering trees and shrubs.
B
ut many visitors to the garden miss the hidden horticultural treasures at the heart of Exbury, making the gardens a joy to explore right through the summer. Tucked away next to the Mediterranean-style tennis court tea garden, itself a lovely spot with its planting scheme of cool lemons, greys and blues, is the exotic and secluded ‘Sundial Garden’. Push open the gate and you are in a world of colour and light, with bright salvias, dahlias, verbena, tigridias, cannas and other sun-loving perennials. At the far end is a cool shaded arbour framed by an ancient wisteria. The mirror-planting means this is the perfect place to relax and ‘reflect’. Just a stroll away from this beautiful garden is the famous view across the Beaulieu River – recently opened up to reveal its full vista - and a walk along its banks to the shaded View Point with seats and the sight of small boats travelling to and from the Solent. Not too far away and within sight of Exbury House, the herbaceous borders - full of shape and colour throughout the year - are an interesting stopping off point on the way to the Five Arrows Gallery which has changing exhibitions of art, sculpture and plants throughout the year. Then there’s the fantastic Hydrangea Walk, a pathway lined with the colour of hundreds of blue and white plants, leading to the Jurassic boardwalk, a mysterious swampy area with ancient plants and wildlife including frogs, damselflies and dragonflies.
Success for local dance school
Walk over the boards across the boggy swamp to the Jubilee Pond where you might see a kingfisher or swallows swooping low over the water. You’ll certainly catch glimpses of ancient and enormous carp moving through the peaceful waters. Those who take the Exbury Garden Railway are in for a treat as they see a part of the garden that other visitors don’t reach. The steam engine pulls its carriages through the Summer Lane Garden, planted in a naturalistic style with grasses and flowing ribbons of hardy herbaceous plants, trees and shrubs. “There is so much at Exbury that many visitors miss,” said head gardener John Anderson, who prepares a regular blog on the Exbury website describing the best that the Gardens have to offer at any given time. “There are many hidden secrets here that make Exbury a delight whatever the season. We’re looking forward to a busy summer – with a new Children’s Play Area and the New Forest Tour and Beach Bus calling into the Gardens throughout the summer holidays, Exbury has never been more accessible or offered more for visitors at this time of year.” www.exbury.co.uk/

ast month the Laura Dunkley School of Dance & Performing Arts ran an extremely successful and now highly talked about musical theatre workshop based on the musical CATS. Thirteen young people aged between 8 and 18 had the opportunity to learn and further develop their skills as actors, singers and dancers and most importantly as performers. These talented individuals learnt songs and choreography from the show and the week concluded with a high energy full scale production at the Victory Hall in Warsash. The students designed and put together the set and costumes and their outstanding final performance was supported by a live band. The Big Fun Run series… coming to a park near you!
The Big Fun Run series rolls into Southampton on Sunday 27th July. Hundreds of runners and walkers will enjoy a morning of fresh air, fitness and fun at Southampton Common.

014 sees Southampton celebrate 50 years of City status and The Big Fun Run in July is a highlight not to be missed in the calendar of events. What’s so appealing about a Big Fun Run? They offer all ages and abilities the chance to shape up and smile at a fun run that promises to give people the chance to get active. So getting together with friends and family, doing something healthy and enjoying the great outdoors are three key motivating factors. The Common is also an area of stunning natural beauty making it the perfect setting for the 5k. It’s the largest open space in the City boundaries and is one of the UK’s most important wildlife sites. “The Big Fun Run is strictly for Fun, where it’s all about easy relaxed exercise. No times, no pressure, no sweat - just some easy moves and lots of laughs.” said Fun Run Director Neil Kilgour. Big Fun Runs are real family affairs with people taking part across the generations; it’s not unusual to see a grandparent, mum and child all taking part. And you get lots of runners in fancy dress so that adds to the colour and humour of the occasion. Are you getting a picture of something a little bit different? This isn’t about testosterone charged elite athletes breaking record times. It’s about mums with prams, dads with toddlers on their shoulders, Fred Flintstone running round with his grandma. Throw in 101 dalmatians and you get a fantastic fun mix. The Big Fun Run which starts in Southampton at 11am is among 18 Big Fun Runs across the UK staged from July until October 2014. More than 7,000 people took part in the nationwide events last year and more than £200,000 was raised for charity.

Another ingredient of the Big Fun Run success story is the opportunity it provides for small charities and fundraisers. Big Fun Runs are particularly popular with children’s charities as the ‘family-friendly’ ambience means it’s relatively easy to recruit fundraisers. Nicky Omidi and a her team of 27 adults and 18 children from Surrey are a true example of just how the Big Fun Run participation can benefit your fundraising efforts. Calling themselves the ‘Sebastian Soldiers’ Nicky and her army will all be travelling down to Southampton on July 27th in hopes of raising a large amount of money for the British Heart Foundation in memory of baby, Sebastian James, who died at Southampton General Hospital on February 15th this year. “Our team are very excited and proud to be a part of the Big Fun Run.” said Nicky. So far the Sebastian Soldiers have raised £3,438.72 and have asked the Big Fun Run to share their story in order to promote their fundraising efforts and add to their astonishing total! Show your support for Nicky Omidi and baby Sebastian by donating to their Just Giving Page at justgiving.com/nickyomidi Entries for the Big Fun Run cost only £11.49 for adults, £9.49 for concessions and kids under 5 go free. Everyone gets a goody bag, making an ideal fun filled family day out. Whatever your reason for your Big Fun Run, enter today at www.bigfunrun.com

Hampshire Pet Fair
Saturday August 30th - 10am to 3pm
O
ne of Southampton’s best-loved heritage assets the SS Shildhall continues its popular programme of cruises in late July and August, offering a variety of trips to suit all tastes. The weekend of 25-27 July is particularly busy, with a Fri 25 Docks Cruise between 4pm-6pm offering commentary on the history and sights and sounds of the Docks. This is followed by a trip on Sat 26 July to Bembridge and back, once again with commentary and passing Ryde Pier on her 200th anniversary. This extended cruise is sure to be one of the highlights of Shieldhall’s season, staged to coincide with the Hampshire Food Festival and with the promise of delicious Hampshire Fare on board. The weekend is completed on Sun 27 July with a Leisurely Lunch Cruise into the Solent, with First Class passengers being treated to a three course meal with wine. August begins with the ever-popular Cowes Fireworks Cruise on Fri 8 August, followed by a cruise to see the start of the RORC Round Britain and Ireland Race off Cowes on Sun 10 Aug. Shieldhall will then play a major role in the Southampton Maritime Festival being staged on Fri 22 and Sat 23 August, with Docks Cruises taking place each day between 4pm-6pm. Next on the agenda is a trip to Poole on Mon 25 August (tickets available for a one-way cruise) where Shieldhall can be visited ‘alongside’, before she cruises out to provide the very best viewing platform for the Bournemouth Air Festival between Fri 29 and Sun 31 August. Shieldhall will return to Southampton from Poole on a one-way cruise on Mon 1 September, with tickets once again available. A trip on Shieldhall is a must for those who enjoy the nostalgia of steamships, with access to the ship’s Engine and Boiler Rooms and Bridge providing a great insight to the sights and sounds of yesteryear. For full info on Shieldhall’s summer programme and to book online, please visit www.ss-shieldhall .co.uk, or call to book with the Ticket Manager on 0844 357 2329.

New home, new life – new buy
T
If you’re a UK citizen and looking to buy your first home, or move house, look for NewBuy properties now and take that next step.
For those wanting to get on the property ladder with ownership for their first home the Government came up with the NewBuy scheme where it is possible to overcome the deposit gap. If you’re struggling to move house or step onto the property ladder because of the large deposits required, NewBuy could be your answer to a new home.
More information can be found at www.newbuy.org.uk or www. helptobuy.org.uk
he biggest hurdle for the first time buyer is to overcome the need for a large deposit; since the crash in house prices and the devastating recession deposits for first time buyers has made the purchase of their own home highly restrictive as well as bringing about a rapid growth in the private rental property market.
NewBuy is a Government-backed scheme that could help you get a 95% mortgage; so, with just a 5% deposit, you could make the next big step on the property ladder or even move into your first home. The home building industry and mortgage lenders, the banks and building societies, are working alongside the government to provide potential home owners across the country with 95% mortgages on bookkeeping made simple Bookkeeping: Accounts: Payroll: VAT: new build properties.

PROPERTY RICH... CASH POOR? HOW WILL YOU PAY FOR YOUR RETIREMENT? Are you a homeowner aged over 55? Would you like to unlock the equity tied up in your property to use for any purpose?
The scheme aims to protect lenders if repossession were necessary but does not change the buyer’s responsibility of mortgage repayments.

State Pension Top Up Scheme
I
n the Autumn Statement 2013, the government announced its intention to introduce a scheme to allow pensioners to top up their additional State Pension with a new class of voluntary National Insurance contribution, to be known as Class 3A. The government announced more details in the budget March 2014 about how the scheme will work. The scheme will open in October 2015 and will be available to all pensioners who reach State Pension age before the introduction of the new State Pension in April 2016. To qualify you must be • a man born before 6 April 1951 • a woman born before 6 April 1953 Class 3A contributions will give pensioners an option to top up their pension by up to £25 a week in a way that will protect them from inflation and offer protection to surviving spouses. In particular, it could help women, and those who have been self-employed, who tend to have low additional State Pension entitlement. The estimate is that around 7 million pensioners will have enough savings to pay the new National Insurance contribution. (Source: Department for Work and Pensions) The maximum £25 a week costs £22,250 for a 65-year-old. It would cost a customer £41,139 to buy this same index linked income from an annuity (Source: Exchange). Please contact Sheila Tarr I.F.S. on 01489 574355 or ifs@sheilatarr. co.uk if you would like to assess whether purchasing the new Class 3A contributions is appropriate for your individual circumstances.
