Portsmouth D-Day 70th Anniversary FREE Family Experience Weekend 7th – 8th June

Southsea, Portsmouth is hosting a free, family D-Day Experience weekend on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, which took place on 6th June 1944.

S

outhsea Common will come alive with entertainment and activities for all ages including live music from the 1940s, arena displays and parades, military vehicle exhibitions, lindy hop dancers, a 1940s vintage market, archive and war film screenings, talks by local veterans, homefront displays, photographic exhibitions, street theatre performances and much more. On the Saturday evening, 7th June from 7pm, a lively family concert will feature hit music from the 1940s with live singers and bands building up to a fireworks finale. Mark the occasion in style by going along in 1940s clothes and don’t forget your dancing shoes. D-Day was a turning point in the Second World War, and a moment when the course of world events depended on the Allied troops taking part. Southsea Seafront, Portsmouth Dockyard and naval bases in Gosport played a vital role in preparing and supplying the D-Day fleet and were critical embarkation points. Southwick House, just north of the city, was the headquarters of General Eisenhower during the operation. For more details www.visitportsmouth.co.uk.

Southsea is also home to the D-Day Museum, Britain’s only museum dedicated solely to covering all aspects of the D-Day landings in Normandy. For more information visit: www.ddaymuseum.co.uk or call 023 9282 6722.

Local man says thank you by getting on his bike

If you see the man from this photograph cycling past your door, or from your car, please wave or smile, as he’s training for something worthwhile.

H

e is no Olympic athlete, although early in life there were aspirations, having crewed for several Gold and Silver medal winners from his local Hamble River Sailing Club. But then, aged 15, while a pupil at Hamble County Secondary School (now Hamble Sports Complex), he was struck down with a ‘mystery illness’, which, in fact, was a life threatening brain haemorrhage. The subsequent surgery left him with epilepsy and a left hemiplegia. It could have been worse. Local man Nick Ward is getting fit for a challenge he’s set himself to complete on 22nd August this year, his birthday, and the anniversary of the first ever ‘Americas’ Cup Trophy Race’ that took place in 1851, which was competed over a 55 mile circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight, and won by the racing schooner ‘America’. Since then, despite several unsuccessful challenges, the cup, known as the “Auld Mug” has stayed on foreign shores. So, why should you smile or wave at Nick as he rides by on his bike? Well, It’s payback time for Nick, as he wants to thank those who saved him back

in 1971, by raising money for the Neurological Unit at Southampton’s’ General Hospital. And so, come August, Nick will circumnavigate the Island, by bike. He will be accompanied by Chris, his wife, and others, on his 62 mile quest. Nick’s personal target is to raise £1,851.00, a reflection of the date when the ‘Auld Mug’ was lost and he already has the pledged support of several local companies. ‘Smile4Wessex’ is a charitable organization, which raises much needed funds for The Wessex Neurological Unit, and their web-site can be found at: www.smile4wessex.org. This Regional Unit saves and changes hundreds of children’s and adults’ lives annually and serves the whole of the Wessex region.

Built with quality components and available with any operating system, they are set to be the ideal solution for customers preferring Windows 7 and wanting to purchase locally with personal service and free professional advice.

Hamble Valley Rotary Club

M

any people remember Bev Smith who was a much loved member of the Club.

Established now for many years the local IT specialists have built an enviable reputation and large customer base providing a quick and efficient same day/ next day repair service. Having already sold hundreds of Computers and fixed thousands of machines, they offer a service simply not available in the large electrical superstores. For all your personal computer needs you can contact Martin or Scott on 01489 785646, pop into their Botley shop or get service online at www.ComputermanIT.com

Bev died tragically in 2011 when on stage at Curdridge. Bev was a TV producer and video maker and had made a promotional video for the Rotary Jaipur Limb Trust in Kampala. On Bev’s death, money collected in his memory was given to the Club and, after much deliberation and with the agreement of Bev’s family, the money has been used in helping to fund the development of a physiotherapy unit at the Great Lakes Rehabilitation unit in Kampala, where Bev had made the video. A celebration of the opening of the unit was held on 29 May at the Botleigh Grange Hotel and ‘The Beverley Smith Physiotherapy Unit’ is a fitting tribute to Bev’s memory. June is always a busy month for the Club as it concludes with the Young Carers’ Festival at Faithorne Manor. This is a remarkable event organised by Fairthorne and the Children’s Society. For many years now the Club has had the privilege of running a café at the Festival. New Mobility Store - Southampton

A

bleworld, the UK’s leading mobility company, is delighted to announce the opening of its latest franchise store in Southampton. Ableworld Southampton is owned by local businessmen Jeff Newman, Steven Thompson and Chris Hewitt and is located at 42-46 Portsmouth Road, Woolston, Southampton, SO19 9AD. Ableworld is easy and convenient to reach with ample free parking.

From spacious premises, Ableworld offers customers a wide selection of quality mobility and homecare products. A local store, staffed by local people is often the place to go for the best service and that is certainly the case here, but Ableworld is also the place to find the keenest prices and enjoyable shopping experience. The store stocks a very wide range of products including larger items such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs, adjustable beds and rise and recline chairs but also many smaller items to help with day to day tasks. They also hold a wide range of products to help with bathing, toileting and dressing as well as a range of continence care products. Ableworld also installs stairlifts and service scooters. Whatever the product, the aim is to help people to lead easier, more comfortable and independent lives.

The directors of Ableworld Southampton are all local people who have significant experience behind them. Jeff’s working history goes back over 35 years and includes retail, construction and hospitality. His most recent role was as a local Franchised Milkman and was 2008 Southern area Milkman of the Year. Many of Jeff’s old customers are similar in age and needs to Ableworld’s core customers. Steven and Chris have had a successful partnership for several years and bring their skills from construction and mechanical engineering into the business, something that will be particularly useful on the stairlift and scooter side of the business. All three directors have undertaken Ableworld’s extensive and rigorous training programme so that they can assess customers correctly and provide the right solutions for the variety of customer’s needs they will face.

Jeff has a clear view how he and his fellow directors can help local people who need mobility equipment “Having had daily contact with elderly and disabled customers in my previous

Happy 1st Birthday to

occupation, I witnessed several fall injuries and mobility complaints. With our store having good parking and being on several main bus routes I believe our highly visible and accessible superstore on Portsmouth Road, opposite the bus station, will fill a gap in the market and serve as a welcome benefit to the community.” Whatever your needs, you can be assured of a range of quality products from names you can trust. Why not call in? Open 8.30 to 5.30 Monday to Saturday you can visit your new Ableworld store at 42-46 Portsmouth Road, Woolston, Southampton, SO19 9AD. Tel: 02380 440000.

Computer Know How!

Does your PC seem slow? Maybe even noisy? Well these could be a couple of many signs that suggest the hard drive could be at the end of its life.

I

f you’re running Windows 7 or higher Hypersonic recommend that you change the hard drive for a solid state drive (SSD).

This is a drive that uses non-volatile memory as a means of storing and accessing data, much like computer RAM. Unlike other storage devices such as the original hard drive in your PC, an SSD has no moving parts, which gives it advantages such as accessing stored information faster and producing no noise. It is often more reliable, and consumes much less power than the traditional hard drive (HDD) found in computers. This upgrade will significantly increase the speed of your PC even from when it was new. Also as long as your PC is still working the original hard drive

can be cloned onto the SSD so the computer will be exactly as it is now just much faster and reliable. If you would like more information on SSD drives or would like to upgrade your PC please call Hypersonic and they can arrange this for you. Using a tablet, phone or laptop whilst on the move can be much more enjoyable with the ability to connect to open, public wifi hotspots. These hotspots are usually hosted by restaurants, hotels, pubs etc. and allow you to connect to the internet through their broadband connection. But are they actually safe? Potentially in a matter of seconds a hacker can manipulate your machine into a conduit that sends data immediately back to the hacker. Once a device is compromised, login credentials from bank accounts, social media and webmail sites can be collected from him. However don’t be too phased there are methods to prevent this from happening. Firstly make sure your firewall is on, and that your antivirus is fully up to date. Always use https:// before a website as this will use a secure connection to the website. If you are still worried about the hotspot being insecure, please do not use the hotspot for doing private, confidential searches. Just make sure to think next time you log into an open wifi hotspot that you might not be as safe as you think you are. Don’t forget that you can always contact Hypersonic for free impartial advice. Just give us a call for hardware and software support, tuition, web design, data retrieval, commercial and home networking, all with an efficient and friendly service. T

he Friends of Fareham Community Hospital are holding their Annual General Meeting on Thursday 26th June at 7.00 pm in the Tom Smith Room, Fareham Community Hospital, Brook Lane, Sarisbury, SO31 7DQ.

Members of the public are very welcome at this event, when a GP from the Fareham & Gosport Clinical Commissioning Group will be giving a talk on the Group’s plans for the future of health care in our area and the effect it could have on the work of the Hospital.

The Rainbow Centre invites supporters to attend a Thank You Celebration Open Day Saturday 21st June 2014. Save The Date!

A

fter just six weeks since the crisis appeal launch, The Rainbow Centre, Fareham are delighted to announce that their appeal fund has reached £141,000. Having reached 93% of its target they are planning an open day to celebrate their success and thank the community for their support. The Celebration Open Day will take place on Saturday 21st June to mark the end of the appeal. All those who have supported The Rainbow Centre’s crisis appeal are invited to attend the open day which will start at 12 noon following the Annual General Meeting.

T

his year’s level 3 swimming meet, held at Maidenhead Leisure centre and organised by Windsor swimming club, was one of the busiest of the year so far with over 350 swimmers attending. On what was the hottest day of the year, spectators had to endure sauna like temperatures poolside to cheer on the swimmers. The gala got off to a bit of a rocky start with faulty timing equipment but once this had been sorted the gala ran smoothly. For some of the younger swimmers this was their first taste of real competition between 19 squads, having previously attended a novice gala with only 4 teams. This delay did not prevent the swimmers of Locks Heath Swim Squad from performing well and they remained focused and determined and delivered some fantastic results. The star performers for Locks Heath were Shannon Lamb who picked up a gold medal for 10 year old girls 50m Backstroke, Thomas Larby received gold for boys age 9 50m breaststroke. Jessica Larby, age 13, was awarded 3 medals, a silver for 50m freestyle and two bronzes in 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke. Eleven year old Lucy Newton collected a silver for her performance in girls 50m backstroke. Yet another fantastic gala for Locks Heath with very few disqualifications for the new swimmers and loads more personal bests for the squad.

Sarisbury Green Community Centre

Centre Director, Lara Bull says: “We’re so grateful to all those who have supported our appeal, from individuals, community groups, social groups businesses and more. We’re organising our open day to showcase our centre’s services, we’d like to ensure that we can say thank you to everyone who has helped us and introduce our team. Please come and visit us at the centre so we can meet you all in person and celebrate our achievements. You’ll be able to see first-hand how your donations will be used. Words cannot express how grateful they are; the team, the children, families and their adults and carers will all see the benefit of everyone’s support” The Rainbow Centre are very close to reaching their target of £150,000 so please keep supporting the Centre both now and into the future. More information about the Celebration Open Day will be published in the next few weeks. Please watch this space and save the date in preparation for a fun family day out from 12noon to 4pm on Saturday 21st June. West End Carnival

Carnival week in West End

With summer sun comes thoughts of carnivals and community in villages across The Informer area. Last minute arrangements are being made after a year of planning. Carnival time is a great reason to bring the community together and celebrate village life.

I

n West End, the committee have been working hard to make sure there is something for everyone to enjoy. We spoke to committee member Diane about what there will be to look forward to; “It’s a carnival week with lots going on in the lead up to the actual parade;” she explained. “During the week everyone should be looking in the shop windows for something odd, something that does not belong in that shop’s display. “The Master Builder will be holding a Carnival Quiz on the Thursday evening and one of the favourite challenges of the week is the Best Allotment competition. And everyone can have a go at the Best Decorated Cup Cake Competition.” The Carnival Court is made up of Millie who is the Carnival Queen with Sophie as her Maid of Honour and with Ella and Amy as the Princesses. They all deserve a special cheer as they pass by in the procession. Diane went on to tell The Informer of one very special award during Carnival Week. “We will be awarding the Citizen of Honour; this is a person who has contributed greatly to the community, and this year it will be given to Richard Johns, known to everyone as Ditch, and he has been Chairman of Friends of Hatch Grange for 22 years. He retired from the post earlier this year; he is someone who has added very much to our community. “This all culminates in the parade, which will have the theme of ‘Countries of the World’, on the Saturday of course which will wind its way around the village before arriving at Hatch Grange where there will be a fete with something for all the family to get involved in.” All the organizing committee need now is for the weather to remain sunny and warm for a week of Carnival celebrations. www.westendcarnival.moonfruit.com Carnival procession on Saturday 21st June starting at 1pm and the fete will be from 2pm until 5pm.

he I Body Clinic based in Hill Head Fareham uses the latest non surgical treatments to help aid weight loss. One of the treatments which they specialise in is the Ultra i-Lipo Laser Lipoysis. This provides a relaxing pain free treatment that mimics your body during natural weight loss, allowing you to reduce fatty deposits in specific ‘trouble spots’ that your normal diet and exercise regime may not be managing. In addition the Ultra i-Lipo also helps with skin tightening, stretch mark correction and collagen toning. Independent clinical studies have shown i-Lipo to be, in some cases, comparable to results achieved by liposuction. Ultrasound imagery shows up to 30% reduction in the fat layer depth after just one treatment. For more information or to book your appointment please call 01329 668122

The Caci Jowl Lift Specifically targets those loose muscles around the jawline, using quad probe applicators designed to double the lifting action of the Caci treatment system, therefore enhancing the results and reducing treatment time. The 15 minute facial treatment helps improve the appearance of sagging jowls by using the quad probes which have been specifically developed to target the muscles around the jawline. They emit tiny electrical impulses to lift, firm and redefine the facial contours. You can have the treatment incorporated in the full facial Caci treatment for an extra £15 or as a stand alone treatment for £25, it is completely painless and the results are superb.

Louise has studied energy since 1989 as a Martial

Artist in Australia, having originated from New Zealand and is excited to be bringing for the first time ever Donna Eden’s work to the area.

EM101 is the first of a two part course showing practical steps you can take to transform your own health and your family’s health. EM101 must be completed before undertaking EM102. If you have any health issues or are just needing more energy throughout the day this is the course for you. Eden Energy Medicine is a preventative system based on ancient Chinese techniques and can also be used as a complement to western medicine. The day will be filled with practical demonstrations on how to get your own energies flowing for improving your health and vitality. You will learn how to do a five minute Daily Energy Routine to boost your energies, strengthen your immune system, improve coordination, think more clearly, move toxins through your body and learn how to keep yourself calm under pressure. You will take home many more techniques to get your energies balanced for better health. Eden Energy Medicine techniques can be done standing, sitting or lying down depending on your mobility. Louise is an Eden Energy Medicine Certified Practitioner teaching regularly and she also has a practice, Energy InSync, in Hedge End. Sessions are for 1 ½ hours and cost £60.00, from Monday to Saturday. Evening appointments are available. Gift vouchers are available and are a great way to really treat your loved ones. My experience of a session with Louise Neale Having experienced an intermittent ache in my right thigh for several years which had been attributed to osteoarthritis of the hip, I consulted Louise Neale in November 2013 after the pain had become constant for some months. Since that session, five months ago, I have had NO aching in my thigh at all, have been able to walk easily again, sleep soundly and drive long distances once more. I take no medication where previously I had used ibuprofen gel regularly but with minimal relief. As a medical doctor I know of no medication or allopathic treatment that would have given such an immediate and lasting result. I had tried other complementary therapies before seeing Louise but never had more than a few hours relief from discomfort. The session with Louise was very relaxing, gentle and obviously powerful. I am very grateful to her. Sara Williams, April 2014

Meeting heavy horses A family day out that involves animals of any sort is always fun. If the animals are something really special, such as heavy horses, then the fun increases. This month’s Informer destination for that day out is a rescue centre for these magnificent animals and it proved to be a truly magical experience.

T

he Heavy Horse Centre is the only rescue centre of its kind in England and the animals they have stabled there vary from the brain damaged to the badly treated, but, here they are treated with love and kindness. On the outskirts of Verwood, just a little north of Ringwood and at the end of a country lane is the stable and farmyard where these rescued beasts now live, along with their carers and Richard, the showman of the Centre. This is a home where previously mistreated or ill heavy horses and ponies have been brought, where they can live out their days cared for and fussed over and they just love the attention given to them by the hundreds of visitors.

Once through the gates and with your bags of feed in hand, visitors will find something for everyone including free Heavy Horse Wagon Rides, Tractor and Trailer rides and even the chance to drive a real Farm tractor! You and your offspring can actually drive a fairly modern tractor! As well as over 20 rescued heavy horses there are donkeys, miniature ponies, kunie kunie pigs, goats, sheep, alpacas, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks, snow dogs and many more creatures to see and fuss over. There are also plenty of play areas for the little ones to drain some of that pent up energy. The Heavy Horse Centre is a farmyard, so at times the field areas may well be muddy, but the place has a really rustic feel to it, the staff are friendly and the cafĂŠ serves a good cup of tea as well as snacks.

The Heavy Horse Centre is situated on the Edmondsham Road within easy reach of Southampton and Ringwood. From Verwood, which is on the B3081, take the exit signed Alderholt from the fire station roundabout; and it is just two miles away. www.dorset-heavy-horsecentre.co.uk Dorset Heavy Horse Centre, Edmondsham Road, Verwood, Dorset. BH21 5RJ Tel: (01202) 824040

The horses are truly a delight; and you cannot help but pick favourites. On the short, but lovely, wagon ride Richard the driver will tell you about the history of the heavy horse. For example, did you know that our massive, modern lorries haul a little over forty tons up and down our motorways and yet one horse on a tow path used to pull fifty tons of laden barge along our canals. His tour is educational and littered with comical comments that will have adults and children laughing out loud. The same thing happens when the horses are brought out into the yard to be introduced to the crowds and for everyone to be told their history before they were rescued, Richard is worth the price of admission on his own. This is without doubt one of the best days out we at The Informer have had when out on assignment. It was fun, informative and left us feeling as if we had done our bit, with the entrance fee and our fussing of the magical and mighty horses, to help in their continued rehabilitation and care. The drive down through Ringwood Forest is beautiful and the horses will leave you wanting to take them home with you.

Highbury travel students donate child-size wheelchair through fundraising effort Highbury students from the Cosham college have raised enough money to buy a child-sized wheel chair, by staging a sponsored accessibility day.

T

ravel and Tourism students decided to raise the money after a presentation from the Red Cross during their Enterprise and Volunteering lesson, where they found out how the charity helps everyday people in crisis. They heard that adult-sized wheelchairs are generally too big and uncomfortable for children to use and decided to raise money to buy one and did this by holding a sponsored visit of local attractions in wheelchairs. This also enabled them to more easily understand the issues around using a wheelchair and problems with accessibility. HMS Warrior, The Royal Marines’ Museum and the Spinnaker Tower all provided free entry to the wheelchair bound students. Staff were on hand to point out the accessibility of each attraction, ensuring a smooth visit. The day ended with a visit to Laser Quest in Action Stations. Highbury student Jon Checksfield, 19 said; “This was a really positive experience. The Spinnaker Tower staff went out of their way to help us.” Fellow student, Fenella Harris 17, also on the National Diploma Travel and Tourism course added; “It was good fun and very eye-opening. The staff on HMS Warrior really knew their stuff.” The wheelchair will be used at QA hospital and will carry an engraved plaque with Highbury College National Diploma Travel and Tourism students 2012-2014.

Keep their brain active over the summer holidays with Kumon

L

earning is just like exercise: take several weeks off and the treadmill feels a lot steeper when you finally get back on.

It’s no different with maths and reading. Research suggests that a long break without any mental activity can result in a decline of mathematical, reading and language skills as well as concentration levels. Daily Kumon study can help make all the difference when it comes to keeping ‘in shape’ between school terms and throughout the year. At your local study centre, Kumon offers individualised maths and English study programmes for all ages and abilities. The programmes enable children to develop their independent study skills and give them a head start with the new challenges they will be facing at the start of the new term. As we look forward to the long balmy days of the summer holidays, it’s especially important that your child gets to grips with these core subjects and with the learning skills vital for academic progression. One paw still in the past and a nose to the future Alan Clack, a local man who lives in Warsash, is a collector and a historian. His unusual interests are more than a hobby, they are a passion and they occupy a great deal of his time. They arose from his fifteen years service in the Special Police Force, and have developed from a modest collection of police uniforms and police cycles to his involvement in re-enactments and shows that tour the country exhibiting historic vehicles that have served our forces through the years. He also loves dogs and trains them for the shows. His motto is “One paw still in the past and a nose to the future”. His dogs have appeared in TV dramas and films. This month, Alan shares his story with The Informer.

I

decided to join the Special Police Force in late 1984 after a friend

2006/2007 formed a new group called Police Car UK. So I joined and

gave me a leaflet that read ‘unpaid work in spare time with the

I also joined the Hampshire Police History Society too. I then started

same powers as a regular officer while on duty’. By April 1985 after two interviews I was off to the Magistrates Court to be sworn in. After 6 months on the streets training I was walking a beat on my own. I was 19 ½ years old. I spent 3 years on ‘town beat’ on a Friday night in Fareham. I am sure myself and my now good friend and beat partner Steve J could possibly have caused more trouble than good, because we were both so young. After my time in Fareham I moved to Park Gate and spent the next 12 years on the beat in Stubbbington,Titchfield and Warsash driving and on foot, although I spent most of my time cycling the beat. I could get to incidents quicker that way than by car most of the time. I got my long service medal after 15 years. I left the specials in Jan 2000 due to family commitments, and that, I thought, was that. Then after about two years, I came across some photos from my 15 years service and the love of Hampshire Constabulary was rekindled. I started collecting old uniforms and police cycles (at one stage I had six old police cycles) which I had an interest in due to all that time cycling the beat. I collected for my own satisfaction, but eventually I wondered if anyone else in the police service collected uniforms (my collection was from 1800 to present day).

showing my cycles at police events such as Force Open Days and 999 events. I got membership to the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) and was given a new police Smith and Wesson Mountain Bike import after helping out at events. I would cycle around at these events on a 1960’s police bike in full period uniform. During that time I wrote two articles (with the help of PC Steve Woodward from BBC Traffic cops) on police cycling history for the IPMBA. One day I decided I would like to use an old police vehicle to take the cycles to shows and I found an old Surrey dog vehicle which I felt was perfect for my transportation needs. Sadly, I felt, this generated a lot more interest in the dog vehicle then the bikes and always the question was “where is the dog?” So my interest grew to include the dogs and their transportation vehicles and along came Max and a newer dog vehicle, a Staffordshire one. Events snowballed from there. I obtained a DEFRA transport licence which allows me to carry more than one dog at a time and then a performing animal licence. I have now become independent from Police Car UK, and this has allowed me to work with the Home Front History group on World War 2 shows and events and re-enactments, which is more in keeping with my history profile. I also work with another Police car group too. There

To my surprise I found there was a group who collected old police cars,

I am now on my third dog vehicle. Last year Max and I got our Security Badge and our Security Dog Handler Certificate. We have close to 2000 followers on twitter (https://twitter.com/ thedogsection) and this has help us make new friends and contacts. We went through an intense National Association of Security Dog User training course and completed exams for the dogs to have a security training very similar to real police dogs, I also now hold a SIA Security licence. My dogs are now actor dogs who have played police dogs on TV and in films. Max was lucky enough to get a small role in the BBC Drama ‘By Any Means’ last summer. He was in episode five. He loves acting and has made some great new friends. Meet Max and I around the local area at open days and functions. Local boy in need of life changing operation

Oliver Osborne lives with his mother and father and sister Millie in Titchfield Park. He is 3 years old and suffers from Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy.

B

orn in January 2011, 11 weeks premature and weighing 2lbs 12oz, Oliver spent several weeks in hospital and after finally being allowed home suffered from severe reflux. By Christmas it had become very apparent to his parents that there was a problem as he couldn’t move, play, sit up or do anything other children could do. Eventually he was diagnosed with this debilitating condition. However, help is at hand. There is a life changing operation available both in this country and in America called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) that will enable him to walk. He has been accepted for an operation in the United States and it is scheduled for September this year. The associated physiotherapy and core strengthening training and a specialised trike that will strengthen his legs to prepare him for the operation will cost £100,000. Sallyanne and Terry have set up a website: http://www.footsteps4oliver. co.uk/ where you can find out more about Oliver, his condition and the treatment they are fund raising to pay for. There is also a blog in which you can follow Oliver’s process as he undergoes physiotherapy to strengthen his muscles in preparation for his operation. So far Oliver’s parents, Sallyanne and Terry have raised £60,000, however there is still have a long way to go. They have organised a Charity Ball in aid of Oliver on July 5th at St. Mary’s Stadium and the evening is being hosted by Jim Davidson with other entertainment including Kev Orkian, a live band, a silent and a main auction. The evening of the ball starts at 7pm for 7.30pm with carriages at 1pm. It is black tie and can be booked by going to their website and following the link for a booking form. Alternatively contact Sallyanne on 07769551129. If anyone can help raise money needed for Oliver to walk again, something he was told he would never be able to do, then Oliver’s family would be very grateful. There is a page of ideas for fund raising on the website along with the means to donate to the fund. You can also follow their progress on twitter @footstep4oliver and their facebook page is www.facebook.com/FootstepsforOliver

UK Charity Farm4life wins International Cricket Council Award W

e are proud to announce that Ghana Cricket Association and Farm4life have won the ICC Spirit of Initiative Award 2013 for the African Region. The award was presented for introducing Cricket to the School for the Blind, Akropong. In November, Lloyd Clewer and a team of volunteers from the UK travelled to Ghana. As part of the trip they visited the Ghana Cricket Association with donated Cricket equipment given by West Hill Park School and balls for the blind from Hampshire cricket and Hampshire visually impaired Cricket club. The GCA is introducing cricket into the schools and the donated cricket equipment will go to the youth development program for schools throughout Ghana.

On the same trip Lloyd requested that the GCA and cricket professionals travel with him and the team to the School for the blind at Akropong. Lloyd and the team introduced cricket to some of the children who are visually impaired or totally blind. Lloyd says, “It was great to give a blind child the opportunity to hold a cricket bat for the first time and learn the art of cricket, they soon got the hang of the game they were totally amazing”. In Ghana, like many other African countries where resources are scarce often children with any form of disability are overlooked within the system.

Super success for Wave 105 Cash for Kids T

he Wave 105 Cash for Kids team are thrilled to announce that following its superhero fundraising day more than £10,000 was raised for disadvantaged children across the south. Wave 105 Cash for Kids joined forces with a host of Tesco Express stores, schools, businesses and Wave 105 listeners across Dorset and Hampshire who all dug out their best superhero fancy dress to help fundraise and support the initiative. Wave 105 Cash for Kids charity manager, Gloria Hill, added: “We are totally overwhelmed by the support we received for our first ever Cash for Kids Superhero Day – it was a huge success! “We all had a fantastic time donning our fancy dress and our presenters also made a huge effort. We had Super Ted, Batman and Mighty Mouse out on the road across the area visiting those who were fundraising.” Wave 105 Cash for Kids believes that all children across the region should have the chance to live life to the full and reach their individual potential. Auto Brite removed the dent, permanently repaired the split and re-sprayed half the bumper and front wing, all in less than a day and at half the price.

Eastleigh unwraps its talents at free family day Eastleigh town centre will be buzzing this summer at an outdoor extravaganza for all the family. Now in its second year, Eastleigh Unwrapped promises to be a day packed with performances for all ages including aerial theatre, circus, explosive dance and live music and the best thing of all is it’s free!

T

he family can help to build a flying machine, climb inside an enormous whale, listen to a range of talented buskers and watch a giant acrobatic wheel as it rolls down the High Street, the day will have something for all tastes and something for everybody young and, not so young. The day also features the acrobatic skills of headline act Square Peg with their new show Rime. This is based on Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s epic poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Square Peg combine circus with theatre and dance to tell this beautiful haunting tale, which will see performers suspended above the audience’s heads in the park area next to The Point. Other acts at the spectacular include: • Acrojou Circus Theatre presenting The Wheel House - A story unfolds inside and around the circular set as it rolls along at a gentle pace, with the audience walking alongside. • Talking Birds present The Whale - As the mouth of the Whale closes, you discover yourself inside a submarine. Opening a red velvet curtain reveals a submariner named Jonah. He has a dilemma: how to communicate a message of great importance to his loved one on shore using the regulation 40 words prescribed by the Operations Manual for Submariners. • Batala Portsmouth - Local samba band playing authentic Afro Brazilian Samba Reggae music. • Chloe Lloyd - Hula Hoop artist. • Penelope Parrau - L’espace d’un instant – a French solo dance performance ending with the dancer leaving the space on the back of a motorbike. • as well as entertainment all day from local Buskers. And The Sorting Office a creative hub in the heart of Eastleigh town centre and packed with talented and independent artists is throwing open its doors for the day for its summer Open Studios event. Pop in to see the work of its 16 resident artists and maybe buy some of the unique works they create. Buy or rent? - the big question With property prices once again on the rise, and considerably so if recent news stories are to be believed, then buying a property is even more likely to be the biggest financial decision you’ll ever have to make. So, how do you know whether it’s the right decision for you right now – or whether you’d be better off renting instead?

O

f course there are many benefits to home ownership such as once you’ve paid off your mortgage, your home will be yours and it could be worth far more than you paid for it. If your home increases in value you can use that equity to help you afford a bigger home or to fund a more comfortable retirement if you downsize; and when you retire you won’t necessarily have the income you need to keep on paying rent – if you have paid your mortgage off you’ll be living in your own home ‘rent free’. You can also invest money in improving your home and, hopefully, increasing its value, whereas you can’t alter a rented home without the landlord’s permission. Put quite simply; sometimes it can actually be cheaper to buy than to rent. So what are the disadvantages of owning your own home? It’s a big financial commitment – you need to be sure you can afford what you’re taking on. With your own home you are also responsible for all the repairs and up-keep of the property and so as well as the mortgage you also need to be sure you can afford maintenance costs such as replacing a boiler if it packs up or fixing a leaky roof. If you stretch yourself too much when you buy you may run the risk of getting into unmanageable debt or even resent not having money for meals out, holidays and entertainment. You do have less flexibility than when renting. For example, if you want to move for work or personal reasons selling up and moving on can

be far more expensive if you own as you’ll have all of the associated estate agency and legal fees. Also bear in mind that it may not always be easy to sell your home – you’ll be dependent on what’s happening in the market and if you’re living with someone else and split up, as sadly happens all too often these days, the process of sorting out the property will be far more complicated and expensive. Buying a property is a big step, and even if affordable then always get advice from the experts, and or a reputable Estate Agent, and try and buy wisely to suit your size of family and your budget.

Property, Finance & Law

We’re separating - what do I do now?

O

f all the ups and downs life has to throw at us the breakdown of a relationship is one of the hardest to deal with.

Whilst struggling to deal with the emotional fall out the harsh reality of considering the financial consequences is a huge burden but essential to resolve early on. When a marriage or relationship breaks down the parties have to divide between them the assets (or debts) they have accumulated. But what if they cannot agree how can they avoid the trauma and expense of arguing the matter before a court? First, nothing can be finalised without both parties making complete disclosure of their assets. Some people might not like this but there is no realistic alternative. Therefore, be prepared to produce copies of pay slips, bank statements, shares and building society accounts and anything else showing what money you have and where it is. It must be up to date. Secondly, remember that the children come first. They almost certainly did when you were together and that will not change just because you are now divorcing. The children will need somewhere to live. The parent they live with will need an income to provide for the children. Thirdly, get good legal advice early on from a specialist. In today’s world changes come about quickly and you need up to the minute expert advice. Perhaps you do not feel ready to take any action but need advice to understand exactly where you stand. Driver Belcher’s team are good listeners and will give you balanced, considered advice to help you to have the confidence to make the decision which is right for you. Driver Belcher has a specialist family law team with extensive experience of helping people to resolve the difficulties arising from the ending of a relationship. They are accredited members of the Solicitors Family Law Association, which promotes a non-confrontational approach to resolving legal matters in a practical way. They will however ensure a firm and robust representation to fully protect your position should negotiations fail. For further advice please contact Victoria Baker at Driver Belcher Solicitors on 01489 785737 or email vbaker@driverbelcher.co.uk

Invest into a “nicer” ISA this summer

I

n the latest Budget George Osborne announced that a New ISA (or NISA for short) is being introduced from July 2014. These new rules are the most radical overhaul to ISA rules since they were introduced and signify the intention to encourage individuals to save and invest for their future. New ISA rules from 1st July 2014 • New ISA limit - the ISA allowance (the amount you can invest each tax year) is currently £11,880, but will rise to £15,000 on 1 July 2014. • Improved flexibility - under the new rules you will also be able to split the ISA allowance as you wish between a New Cash ISA and New Stocks & Shares ISA. At present you can save up to half the ISA allowance in a Cash ISA. • Improved transfer options - from July you will be able to transfer from a Stocks & Shares ISA to a Cash ISA, and vice versa. Under previous rules you could only transfer from a Cash ISA to a Stocks & Shares ISA. • Tax-free interest in Stocks & Shares ISAs - you have always been able to hold cash in a Stocks & Shares ISA, but any interest is in effect paid net of basic rate tax. Under the new rules interest on cash held in a New Stocks & Shares ISA will be completely tax-free. • Junior ISAs - limit will be increased to £4,000 from 1 July 2014. We still expect that Child Trust Fund to Junior ISA transfers will be allowed from April 2015. If you already have an ISA portfolio and would like help managing it or if you have money to invest and would like advice please call Sheila Tarr I.F.S on 01489 574355 to arrange a no obligation free initial meeting. Sheila Tarr I.F.S believe these new rules make ISAs even more valuable, and therefore, in their view there has never been a better time to invest in an ISA. This article is for information only and must not be considered as financial advice. You should always seek independent financial advice before making any financial decisions. Levels, bases of and reliefs from taxation may be subject to change and their value depends on the individual circumstances of the investor The value of an investment can go down as well as up and you may get back less than the amount invested.
