Masters of all they survey…

The now famous tag line from the Monty Python comedy “And now for something completely different” has become something of a mantra to the cadets of Warsash Sea Cadet Unit.

N

ot content with Duke of Edinburgh expeditions to Australia and other innovative projects to keep the cadets syllabus of fun and interesting, a group from the unit decided to take a closer interest in their immediate environment, by trying their hand at a hydrographic survey of their jetty at the entrance to the River Hamble near Southampton. Not having access to a purpose built ship, complete with the sophisticated equipment, or technical expertise available to the Royal Navy’s Hydrographic Squadron, the cadets had to rely on the more traditional methods of mapping their environment as used by Cook or Shackleton, namely; a hand-bearing compass, leadlines, sextants and a tidepole. The main objective was to give the cadets an opportunity to consolidate their burgeoning boating and navigation skills as well as learning some new ones, all within the backdrop of the survey project. The genesis for the project originated from the need for the author, one of the unit’s Civilian Instructors, Paul Lane who also happens to be a Royal Navy Warfare Officer and a RIN Member, to gain some experience of basic surveying prior starting his Hydrographers Course at the RN’s Hydrography & Meteorology School in Devonport. By a happy coincidence, the Port of Southampton was about to start dredging the commercial harbour to take bigger ships; so effected users had been instructed to survey their areas to monitor for any build-up of sediment arising from the work. The survey commenced in the aftermath of the recent storms, so the team also checked for any changes resulting from the weather. Collecting the data, it turned out was the easy bit. Converting it all into a form easily understood proved to be a more time-consuming and thought provoking task; but their efforts have resulted in a number of submissions to the UK Hydrographic Office in Taunton, which hopefully may be incorporated into charts and other relevant publications of the area used by seafarers in the near future.

Local fundraiser goes the extra mile for Rainbow Centre

A

fundraiser from Titchfield has raised over £3,300 for local charity The Rainbow Centre after completing a gruelling 65 mile non-stop run across the Isle of Wight. Martin Palethorpe, an executive coach and father of two, completed the run in just over 16 hours. With friends and supporters cheering him on from the side lines, Martin set out at 7.30am and finally completed his run just after 11pm that evening. The Rainbow Centre, based in Fareham, works with young children and adults with Cerebral Palsy and adults with multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and those recovering from a stroke or head injury. Families from across Hampshire and the south east regularly travel to the centre to use its specialist services. According to Martin, knowing how much the money raised would mean to the charity and

also all the messages of support he had received, is what spurred him on to keep going to the end. He said: “It was a very tough day and I had to break through both physical and mental barriers along the way, but I’ve always been one for a challenge and running 65 miles non-stop was definitely that.” Martin presented a cheque to Rainbow Centre conductor Zita Derbak and four year old Reuben Smith who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and attends the centre two days a week. Lara Bull, centre director from The Rainbow Centre, said: “Just like Martin, our children and adults face many challenges themselves every day and have to keep motivated and working hard to increase their independence and mobility. We’re so thankful to Martin for all his efforts, in both raising this money and for the

awareness he has generated.” It is not the first time that action man Martin has pushed himself to the limit. His previous endurance challenges include cycling the length of Britain, running across both the Gobi and Sahara desert, and also taking part in a race to the North Pole. For more information about the Rainbow Centre please visit www.rainbowcentre.org or call 01329 289500.

Turf Wars D

id your lawn suffer this summer from all the dry, hot and sunny weather? Did it looked scorched and forlorn? Would you like a lawn that looks great and green all year and what’s more you don’t have to water it? You would? Then we have some great news for you. Have you thought about installing an artificial lawn? While this might not be practical for very large lawns if your lawn is under 20 square metres then it is ideal.

A few years ago nobody would dream of fitting artificial grass in their gardens and until recently, for most of us, the only experience we had of artificial grass was the green baize coverings that greengrocers used as bases for displaying fruit and vegetables. Artificial grass has come a long way since it became available in the early 60’s when it was generally only used for sport surfaces. Now it is made to look so real it is a good alternative to the real thing. It wears well, it is child and pet friendly, there are no bare patches, no mud, very little maintenance and best of all – no mowing! It is porous so rainfall will seep through the backing and it does not fade. Most quality brands have at least a ten-year guarantee and the beauty is you can have a great looking lawn all year round with very little maintenance. Depending on usage, all you need to do is give it a brush with a stiff broom about once a month to keep the pile raised. Overall, artificial lawns make life much easier and certainly tick all the boxes in smaller urban gardens.

Would you believe this isn’t real grass?

Flu vaccinations available from local chemist

I

nfluenza, or flu as it is more commonly known, is an infectious respiratory disease. It is highly contagious and spreads rapidly from person to person. Flu typically starts with a headache, chills and or a cough. It is often followed by fever, loss of appetite, muscle aches and fatigue. Unlike the common cold, flu can be potentially life threatening as sufferers can develop complications such as pneumonia and lung infections. Those most at risk from complications are the elderly, asthmatics, diabetics, pregnant women, young children and people with heart disease. Even for those in good health flu can render them unwell for several weeks. The flu virus changes each winter, so having an annual vaccination is the best way of ensuring you keep yourself protected. Vaccinations are not just for those at risk from health issues. For many of us the thought of having to take several days off work is not something we would want to do. If you are self employed and cannot afford to be off work, or you are a School Teacher, Delivery Driver, Shop Worker, Nursery School Teacher, or work in any customer facing environment then you are far more likely to be exposed to the virus. Flu vaccinations are currently available at Everetts’ Locks Heath, Hedge End, Whiteley, Titchfield and Cosham branches, plus David Fogg Chemist and St Luke’s Pharmacy, for only £10. For more information or to book an appointment please contact the branch directly or visit our website at www.everettspharmacy.co.uk.

Okay so everything is looking a little tired and you have had enough of noticing the fading, the damaged leather, the sagging seats, the zips that don’t zip – the list goes on! Before you rush out and buy new, check the possibility of having your quality furniture repaired or even completely recovered and benefiting by choosing from a fabulous range of fabrics to find the perfect match, instead of worrying about fabric choices limited by what’s on offer in the furniture stores. Secondly, it will cost you far less than buying an equivalent, and you will not have the added worry of trying to dispose of unwanted furniture. Having more choice also opens up possibilities for adding pieces and matching them, for example footstools.

Computer Know How! S

cam emails from ‘Apple’ – If you listen to the radio or news then you probably would’ve heard about Apple’s iCloud getting hacked and celebrity’s private photos getting leaked into the social networking world.

The accounts of those celebs were hacked via phishing emails and SMS sent from certain hacking companies claiming to be Apple. The messages go something like this: “Apple has detected an unauthorized sign-in to your iCloud account. Please verify your account by replying with you Apple ID and password.” Now, of course Apple would never ask for that personal information over email or SMS as its open to too many security

threats, this is how you can tell it’s not actually Apple, even though the messages look identical to those they send. If you ever receive an email, SMS or any other form of message from Apple or any other major company asking for a username and password, do not reply and junk the email immediately! Windows 9 Rumored! – You may be thinking… “I’ve only just upgraded to Windows 8” or “I’ve just got used to Windows 8, will I be forced to upgrade again?” but don’t panic! First things first, we are pretty sure that Windows 9 will be a free or very low cost (up to £20) upgrade if you’re running 8 or 8.1. There are also rumors that they will bring back a start menu, similar to Windows 7, if this is true we think most people will want to upgrade immediately. So when will Windows 9 be available? The short answer is, sometime in 2015. But looking at Microsoft’s previous release dates of their operating systems, the chances are it will be in the latter part of the year. At this current time there isn’t huge amounts of information on the update but feel free to go ahead and search Windows 9 to see more rumors and videos on Microsoft’s future operating system. Have a DOUBLe CeLeBRaTION Last month saw a double celebration from Interia, the Kitchen, Bathroom and Bedroom specialists located on the first floor at the Locks Heath Shopping Centre. They celebrated the second anniversary of opening their stunning 3000 sq ft showroom while also introducing their new range of kitchens by Kesseler. In one of the fully working kitchens, Sue Hawkes a Neff Home Economist cooked a variation of dishes on the day for the many people who attended the launch. Customers had the opportunity to see the appliances at work and picked up tips from Sue on the ways to get the best out of Induction Hobs and Ovens which included Combination and Steam. The Kessler kitchens drew very positive comments with some bookings made for surveys. The range - which are German style kitchens complement the existing Ultima range which has been highly successful. Already a Neff Master Partner, Interia have also launched the Siemens Brand of appliances into the showroom. Kessler offer a whole new look with large pan draws as wide as 2 meters with handles or rail systems as well as a huge door and colour range. Considering the high standards of manufacturing the kitchens are favourably priced when compared to many of the existing German ranges. Come along and see for yourselves the stylish displays which will give you an insight into what can be achieved.

Interia offer solutions and styles for all budgets so pop along to their magnificent showroom located on the first floor across from the new Waitrose.

Your local, reliable, plumbing and heating solution

With autumn setting in and the days becoming chilly, many of us will be thinking of lifting our central heating out of its summer hibernation. It sounds simple, but sometimes doing so can lead to all sorts of problems, if everything is not functioning as it should. Boilers, pipes, radiators, valves, pumps: all elements of a circulatory system, each component reliant on the others and if one part should fail, the chain is broken and the system fails. There is a lot that could go wrong, and if anything does, are we going to sit there and shiver? No, because fortunately for us, help is not far away.

B

ased in his new premises in Hedge End, Rob Wilson and his team are on hand to deal with any plumbing situation you may find yourself in. It might be boiler breakdown, or hot water fail or just a radiator with a cold bottom. Rob and his team can be there quickly so you can be safe in the knowledge that the solution is at hand. R Wilson Services is a family run business, which has operated in the local area for over 20 years. Rob took over from his father in the business and after expansion became a limited company in 2003, with the change in business name from Roger Wilson’s to R Wilson Services Ltd. Moving to their new premises on Herald Industrial Estate, in Hedge End has allowed them to put together a showroom with a large range of boilers along with cloakroom, bathroom and kitchen displays featuring many accessories such as taps, shower heads, etc. When speaking to the Informer, Rob was keen to stress that R. Wilson Services offer the complete package. He told us, “ We cover all aspects of domestic plumbing from taps to leaks on pipework, repairs, alterations and complete installation of bathrooms and kitchens, including tiling walls and floors. We work on all aspects of domestic gas and oil; including boiler servicing and repairs, boiler changes, full boiler installations, system upgrades and Landlord Safety Certification.

26

OCTOBER 2014

Not only that, we also undertake all works on central heating systems such as heating system cleansing (‘Powerflushing’), system repairs or leaks, faulty valves and pumps, etc. We are Worcester Accredited Installers, which means we are able to offer our customers extended warranty on Worcester boiler installations and we are proud members of Checkatrade with many feedback reports available for you to view.” Rob’s comprehensive service has the benefit of proximity for Informer readers but with their premesis in Hedge End as a central point, they cover the Southampton, Fareham, Gosport and surrounding areas, as far as Winchester and Alton. So, if you suffer a boiler or plumbing disaster this winter when you feel the need to heat your house or if you are looking for ideas for a complete kitchen or bathroom refit, you know who to call. A life changing experience for me and my family... Sarah James shares her delight following the purchase of a Kinetico 2020c Water Softener.

Sarah James from Reading had suffered with an irritating dry skin condition for years, only made worse by the summer heat and the hard water in her home town of Reading. Following a recent holiday to Cornwall, she was amazed to discover how much better her skin felt after bathing in soft water. Sarah said, “Not having sore, itchy skin for a week while we were on holiday felt wonderful – I actually looked forward to a shower and not having to use a whole tub of moisturiser. It totally took my mind off it and I was free to

just enjoy the beautiful walks and scenery in Cornwall. I was dreading the thought of going home to hard water, just knowing the relief I had experienced for a week bathing and showering in soft water.” Many people suffer from day-to-day persistent, irritating skin problems and would do anything to find a solution to soothe and alleviate the symptoms. Sarah added, “Knowing how much better my skin felt whilst on holiday, we knew we had to do something to tackle our hard water at home to make living with my skin condition more bearable.”

A Kinetico water softener the one thing she couldn’t do without “I remember a friend of mine saying she had a Kinetico water softener and it’s the one thing in her home she couldn’t do without – I didn’t really take much notice until I discovered the wonderful benefits of soft water for myself.”

As soon as they returned from their holiday, the James family called Kinetico who promptly arranged for their nearest authorised Dealer to carry out a home demonstration. “A very professional and helpful Kinetico Dealer came to our home to talk us through the benefits of having soft water and inspect our plumbing to ensure one could be fitted. To be honest, we were already convinced by the benefits of soft water and we’d had a recommendation from our friend – so we had no hesitation in signing up there and then.”

Bathing and showering is now a pleasure

with it and I am already starting to see the benefits to my skin. Bathing and showering is a now pleasure, plus I use far less bathing products and moisturisers. It sounds dramatic, but I can already see how it’s going to change my life. I am delighted to say I can also ditch the limescale remover which I seemed to put in my shopping basket every week to clean my kitchen and bathroom. To think I’ll also save hours on cleaning. It gets even better!”

Banish limescale, get your Kinetico Water Softener today. 0800 977 4423 | www.kinetico.co.uk

“Within a week our new Kinetico 2020c was installed neatly under our kitchen sink. I can’t tell you how pleased I am

Local landmark faces the axe O

n the corner of Bridge Road and Brook Lane, on the A27 in Park Gate stands a landmark tree. Only 15 years ago it was saved from the chop after concerns for the public’s safety but now the residents of the community will have to say goodbye to the much-loved tree after the council announced they had performed tests and found that it had contracted sparassis crispa, otherwise known as cauliflower fungus.

Residents had written to the council to try and save the iconic feature but it was decided that the branches could fall off which would cause a large safety hazard. There has been a call for a replacement tree to be planted in it’s place, in order to maintain one of Park Gate’s most prominent landmarks. Words and picture by Jake Mace

The Computer Trainer By Paul Foley

Technology Will Save Us! But Do We Want it?

Q: I am an active 80 year old and everyone is telling me to “get online” - do I really need to? A: A new government report came out last month that showed 7 million people in the UK remain offline, or without the basic skills to enjoy the Internet. Many people argue that “the modern world” of Internet devices is leaving the older generation behind. Sometimes technology does pass us by. Our tutors have had many visits with older clients up to the age of 96. “It’s like Chinese”, one would say. “What’s the point – it’s too late for me”, said another. New technology is often thought of as the plaything of the young, with the older generation wary of innovations like smart phones, tablets and social media. Do you remember the days when you used to go to the library to find information? You’d sit there for hours researching with books. But now we can get answers with the touch of our fingertips. As with everything, some simple guidance can open up the wonders of technology for even the most basic of beginners. Many people who are isolated can be helped enormously through the power of the Internet. The stories of success are endless. Instead of being scared of technology, we can embrace it. You can receive email messages instantly instead of waiting for the post. You can ‘Skype’ families across the world to hear their voice and see them – for free! You can research hobbies at the touch of a button. Just being online allows you to save hundreds of pounds a year in finding better deals. If anything, it should make your life easier. So no, you don’t NEED to get online, but why not try it out? Take that step now and move into a whole new world – you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it! Do you have a technology dilemma? A burning computer question? Write to The Computer Trainer at info@silvertraining.co.uk or call 02380 001 290

Couple’s housewarming present from lawyers

A

couple preparing for retirement were given an unexpected gift after they moved into their home by local law firm, Eric Robinson Solicitors. After the completion of their move from Midanbury to a flat overlooking the River Itchen, Tony Crook and his partner Maralyn Brock were contacted by Eric Robinson Solicitors to be told that they had won a full refund of the fees for legal work involved in the purchase of their new home. ‘As it is our Golden Anniversary this year, we decided to surprise our 50th conveyancing client of the summer with a full refund of their legal expenses,’ explains Catherine Maxfield, Managing Partner. ‘After everything was sorted and Tony and Maralyn had moved in, we called them with the good news.’ ‘We were shocked and thrilled,’ recalls Maralyn on hearing the news. ‘We received over £700 which has made a real difference and paid for the redecoration we have been doing.’ ‘This has been the second time we’ve used Eric Robinson Solicitors’ Conveyancing Team, third time we’ve used the firm and we have always found them professional, considerate and living up to their reputation. I suppose the fact we keep going back is testament to how much we value what they have done for us.’ ‘The flat is wonderful. Our lounge and bedroom overlook the river which is very relaxing. I have retired, and Tony will in the near future, so this move was about addressing our work/life balance and we couldn’t be happier with this decision.’

The Miners Arms - a traditional village pub

T

he Miners Arms in the village of Funtley, north of Fareham, is a lovely traditional pub with 2 bars; a public bar and lounge bar. Diners are welcome in both and for those who enjoy eating al fresco, there are benches out the front with a small enclosed garden to the right hand side of the pub. Food is served daily and they offer a good menu along with a separate specials board - all are home-made. This year the pub has seen a successful Curry Night, Spanish Tapas Night and Greek Night. To accompany the great food, the Miners Arms has recently

Miners Arms

extended it’s range of wines - some examples, Spanish Rioja, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, South African Pinotage and Californian Zinfindel Rose. Wines are sold by the glass at the very reasonable price of £3.50 for 175ml or by the bottle at £13.50. Sparkling wines are very fashionable at the moment and the Miners Arms have recently introduced Cava and Prosecco which are available for purchase by the bottle. For the traditional drinkers, regular ales on tap are London Pride, HSB and Seafarers and there is a weekly guest or seasonal ale on offer also. Bottled ales include ESB, London Porter, Wild River and Honeydew. Over the years, the Miners Arms has held an annual Treasure Hunt and Summer BBQ and all monies raised at these events are donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. To date the customers and local businesses, who provide raffle prizes to encourage donations, have helped raise over £16,500. This year’s Treasure Hunt was held on August Bank Holiday Sunday, 24 August and raised £1577.00

I lost a third of my body weight with local hypnotherapist My name is Kirsteen and I started the Easyloss Weight Loss programme on 19th January 2013, weighing 15st 3lbs. I’d been depressed about my weight for a long time, but wasn’t one for diets, so the weight just crept up. However two things had happened which made me decide that I had to change. Firstly my 10yr old son, commented that I was fat, he liked it because I was cuddly but nonetheless I was fat, it felt like a knife going through me, he was right, but he had said it when nobody else would have dared. Then I went shopping in the January sales and I was unable to fit into size 18 trousers and so I decided I had to do something, I couldn’t bring myself to even try on a size 20. So I started the Easyloss Programme with Sue from the Hampshire Hypnotherapy Centre in Whiteley. In the first week I lost 5lbs and I took this as the proof that it did work! So I listened to Sue and I followed the guidelines. I ate the same as everyone else in my house ate, just a lot less of it. I went out for meals, enjoyed parties and even lost weight when on holiday.! By middle of July (just 6 months from when I started) I had lost 4st 8lbs, between then and November I lost a further 8lbs here or there and so now weigh about 10st. Total loss of over 5stone! I have a normal BMI and I wear size 10 trousers and have recently bought a size 8 top. I have more confidence, I take more pride in my appearance. I wear clothes that show off my figure, where in the past I would wear big sloppy tops to hide my body. I walk more, I smile more and I go out more. I no longer think about food all the time, but I really enjoy my food when I eat. Call Hampshire Hypnotherapy Centre on 07946 641270 or 0800 970 4776 or visit www.hantshypno.co.uk for information on how Easyloss can help you to lose weight without dieting.

Education

King Edward VI School, Southampton

K

ing Edward VI School, Southampton, has been at the heart of the city for over 460 years and is one of the UK’s leading independent 11-18 co-educational day schools, with a record for academic excellence. Excellent examination results in recent years have been maintained by this year’s cohort. 88% of A level results were A*, A or B with over 25% of all A levels graded at A*. These results ensured students went to a range of competitive institutions in Higher Education with 10% proceeding to Oxford or Cambridge and 82% of students to one of the UK’s top 25 universities. 99% of GCSEs and IGCSEs were at grade C or above with 74% of all grades at A* and A. Not only does King Edward’s promote academic excellence, but it also aims to foster in every pupil a sense of personal worth through a wide range of co-curricular activities, particularly with an active engagement in community work, so that every individual emerges as a fully responsible member of society. Over the summer holidays Sixth Formers have been found, diving and studying biology in Madagascar, taking young carers from Southampton on a camp to Swanage and working with disadvantaged children in South Africa. The Kayak Club spent part of their summer holiday in Sweden and prior to that, fifty Second Year pupils were in Normandy exploring the D-day beaches, chatting in French with stall holders in the market in Bayeux, visiting the tapestry and laying a wreath at the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery. Others had already been to Catalonia to improve their Spanish, skied in the Alps and some spent time in August sailing with the school near Bordeaux. In the future students can look forward to possibly trekking in Morocco or the Himalayas, taking part in a sports tour to the Caribbean or Sri Lanka

or visiting the art galleries of New York. Sport and the arts are also an integral part of school life and students are actively encouraged to become involved in fund-raising and community work and take part in some of the 150 clubs and societies that are available outside of lesson time. In the summer term the Fourth Year pupils led two days of sporting and fun activities for over 200 local primary school children, whilst in the last twelve months King Edward’s pupils have raised over £20,000 for charity. King Edward’s strives to ensure that all pupils reach and fulfil their full potential. A happy atmosphere amongst first class teaching facilities provide exceptional academic stimulus alongside an exceptional co-curricular opportunities. Seventeen bus routes extend throughout south Hampshire, allowing students from the New Forest, Salisbury, Winchester and east of Southampton easy and direct access to the School.

Your brain and music... it’s a no brainer! Learning music benefits all ages

R

esearch has shown, children who learn an instrument obtain higher academic achievements as it stimulates the part of the brain relating to maths, reading, memory and emotional development. In a world where everything is instant gratification, music requires patience and concentration. All these skills are essential for the developing child/young adult. Adults are never too old to learn. Music is not about age, it’s about creativity, fun and keeping the brain working. If you choose an instrument such as the piano or violin you will impove hand strength and manual dexterity. Choose a wind or brass instrument and you’ll increase your lung capacity and breath control. Improvement in memory, listening and reducing stress all benefit from time spent with your instrument. Of course, being a piano/keyboard teacher, Moira Capenter is biased in favour of her instrument and here are some of the fun reasons why. 1. The piano has been played by musicians such as Beethoven, Mozart, Elton John and Lady Gaga so it must have something going for it! 2. The notes are all right in front of you, laid out in two neat black and white rows. (This does not necessarily mean you won’t hit some wrong ones!) 3. The sound you produce does not depend on your lung capacity. You can breath normally and suck a sweet if you think it helps concentration.

4. You do not have to play with other musicians to sound great providing you play with hands, fingers on the right notes! 5. If you have a digital instrument wear headphones when practicing new music. (This prevents anyone within earshot from being traumatised.) Take them off when you are note perfect and stun the world! 6. Tell everyone you are learing to play the piano and they will think you are a genius. Go on, give it a go. You know you’re worth it!

Wykeham House School Offers Separate Education for both Boys and Girls

W

ykeham House School has welcomed Senior Boys this September with the arrival of the Year 7s to its Boys’ School. The separate School is in beautiful, fully equipped, new premises on the High Street in Fareham, just a short walk from the Girls’ School on East Street. Wykeham House School is committed to single sex education and is in the unique position of offering parents the opportunity to drop both boys and girls at the same site whilst educating them separately. The high standards of education, which were shown in the recent, excellent GCSE results achieved by the Girls’ School this summer, are reflected in the Boys’School. Small classes allow individual learning, progress and understanding and both Schools offer a broad curriculum with many extra-curricular activities, which pupils are encouraged to take part in. These include trips at home and abroad, music and drama lessons and clubs such as St John Ambulance. The Boys from the School have already been on a fun two day trip to PGL and the Junior Girls will be going later in the year. Wykeham House School is holding an Open Day on Saturday 11 October between 10am and 1pm offering parents the opportunity to look around both Schools.

Care in the Community

Age Concern Hampshire’s Food & Friendship project Unexpected and genuine friendships have been forged through a successful project providing older people in Hampshire with regular contact around meal times.

A

ge Concern Hampshire’s Food & Friendship project, funded by Hampshire County Council and 10 of the district councils, has been running for over a year and has provided 1150 hours of befriending by volunteers from across the voluntary sector. Clients have reported feeling encouraged to try new foods and of being more aware of the benefits of eating properly, and families have reported that the project gives them peace of mind knowing that their relative is having company and a chance to chat on a regular basis. What is often not highlighted is the benefits to those giving their time to befriend older people in receipt of Meals on Wheels through the Food & Friendship scheme. People volunteer for all sorts of reasons; to increase their own confidence, improve skills or just to become more involved in their local communities. One of our volunteers, Michelle, said “it gives me purpose and motivation…I may be a volunteer but I have gained a friend through my visits. The friendship works both ways”. Gren, another volunteer, enjoys listening to the marvellous stories that older people tell and finding out about their “full and active lives”. For more information on the Food & Friendship project or to discuss volunteering please contact Paul Simmonds on 01962 892455 or email Food&friendship@ageconcernhampshire.org.uk

Care in the Community

A new life for Joyce A new lease of life has come to a Locks Heath resident. Joyce Smith, is the latest client of Home Instead, a local company supporting the elderly and helping them remain independent in their own homes.

Joyce has arthritis and began to find that getting around was proving harder and so her trips to the local shops and library became less frequent. Soon she was seeing less people and for the first time in many years felt lonely and isolated. Joyce heard about Home Instead from a friend and asked owner, Luisa Castle, to visit her to discuss how they could help. “Luisa and I chatted about what I missed and would like. Now, I have three visits a week from Julie, my CAREGiver, who takes me to the shops in her car and one day a week we just chat and do a puzzle together. I look forward to Julie’s visits.” Home Instead, based in Park Gate, have seen a surge of demand for their companionship service. Luisa Castle commented “there are many people in our community just like Joyce, who would love our companion service. Our staff are carefully selected, then matched with the client to ensure a positive relationship is built on trust”. Home Instead provide a wide range of services and remain the highest recommended care company in Southampton*. Halloween -

celebration and superstition

Falling between the end of warm summer harvest and the start of cold dark winter, Halloween is a time of contrasts, celebration and superstition. It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in), when people would light bonfires, wear costumes and leave food to ward off roaming unsettled ghosts.

A

s with many pagan festivals they were absorbed into the Romano-Anglo cultural and in the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated 1st November as a time to honour all saints and martyrs. All Saints’ Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain, and the evening before this great joyous festival became known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. But as with Samhain, All Hallows’ Eve is a time of contrast and confusion when the boundaries between the living and the dead become blurred; a time when good and bad behaviour is switched. This is closely linked with the Roman God Janus, the God of misrule and chaos, where people were encouraged to costume in switched identities; women dressing as men, nobility dressing as slaves. Many of the superstitions surrounding Halloween are methods of protection against this chaos. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event full of child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating, Jack-O-Lantern and costume parties. Across the world people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats. Many of the forgotten rituals focus on the future instead of the past and the living instead of the dead.

Pumpkin carving originates from the tradition of carving horrible distorted faces into root vegetables (similar to ‘gargoyles’). These were placed in windows to scare off the wandering ghosts to prevent them entering the home. Trick-or-Treating is an American import from the original Scottish ‘guising’, the practice of disguising yourself as you left your home so the spirits would not recognize you or the English “going a-souling” where the distribution of receiving Soul Cake in payment for prayers for the Dead, replace the leaving of food and wine for the wandering spirits of Samhain. Halloween in the 21st Century is big business, the second most commercial holiday after Christmas. But whether you are taking your children Trick-or-Treating, taking part in a traditional party games or off looking for wandering spirits, remember you are taking part in custom that has been observed by your ancestors for thousands of years. Words by Jonathan Fost

For example, in 18th-century Ireland, a matchmaking cook might bury a ring in mashed potatoes served on Halloween night, hoping to bring true love to the diner who found it or in Scotland fortune-tellers recommended eligible young woman name a hazelnut for each of her suitors and then toss the nuts into the fireplace. The nut that burned totally to ashes, rather than exploding, represented the girl’s future husband. A familiar superstition is a recommendation that young women toss apple peel over their shoulders, hoping that the peels would fall on the floor in the shape of their future husbands’ initials, but less familiar delving into the darker arts of divination is to stand, holding a candle, in front of a mirror in a darkened rooms and look over their shoulders for their husbands’ faces.

Gardening Why not transform your garden with some Indian sandstone paving?

L

iteral Landscapes have been using Indian sandstone paving for years and there are a few good reasons. Unlike man made slabs, the colour lasts. Like all paving areas, they will get dirty and algae builds up but jet wash it off and, like magic, they are restored back to the colours of the day they were laid. This paving can also be sealed which will brighten up the colours in the paving and make it next to impossible for the algae and grime to cling to the slabs. Also, there aren’t many slabs cheaper on a m2 price than Indian sandstone apart from concrete pimples or rivens and we all know how pretty they are. So if you want a long lasting paving not only in construction but colour too, give them a call for a free quotation and design.

October

...at Swanwick Lakes By October, it is definitely autumn at Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve and time for one of my favourite sights - the golden leaves of the birch trees reflected in the water of New Lake on a still, clear day.

O

ther trees and shrubs like Guelder rose, Wild Cherry, Bramble and Dogwood put on a fantastic display with the red and purple hues of their leaves and the vivid colours of their fruits. The views around the reserve change almost hourly at this time of year, with dewy spiders’ webs and the first frosts making the landscape sparkle. As the season progresses, fungi will become more obvious in our woodlands. The fungi are actually there all year round, with masses of thread-like mycelia hidden in the woodland floor. The damp air of autumn encourages them to send up their fruiting bodies - the toadstools or mushrooms with which we are familiar. There are something like 6000 species to get to grips with, some with evocative names like Candle snuff or Orange Peel fungus and of course the classic red and white Fly Agaric. If you are interested in finding out more about the fungi of Swanwick Lakes, why not book a place on our two part fungi course on Sunday 26th October and Sunday 9th November. For more information and to book your place, call 01489 774406. Alternatively, look out for our guided walk in November when we will explore the autumnal reserve in all its splendour.

What’s on

Medals, murals, trucks and teddy bears!

A Victoria Cross medal, a 100 year old J-type army truck, a specially commissioned mural and a teddy bear that went to war – these are just a few of the hundreds of exhibits that will be on display at museums throughout Hampshire later this year.

T

he First World War meant that Hampshire suddenly went from a quiet, peaceful county to an international assembly point for eight million troops,” explains exhibition curator, Erica Munro. “We’ll be bringing this to life in the Soldiers’ Journey exhibitions which will run at ten locations and highlight Hampshire’s critical role in the First World War. Most importantly, no two exhibitions will be the same as every museum will feature items with specific local interest. She added: “This has been an enormous project and we have spent more than 18 months tracking down these fascinating exhibits. Many of the objects have never been seen before and provide a graphic illustration of the impact of the war on Hampshire and how the County responded”. A truly local perspective The Soldiers’ Journey exhibition is funded by the Arts Council England and will open on October 11 2014 at museums in Aldershot, Alton, Andover, Christchurch, Eastleigh, Fareham, Southampton and Winchester. Each venue will have a truly local perspective. For example, the Andover exhibition will look at the role of the land army, the Eastleigh museum will highlight the town’s role in transporting horses to the front line, while visitors to Fareham can study a fascinating journal belonging to one of the nurses who worked at the local hospital. The Victoria Cross will be on display at SeaCity Museum, Southampton. The teddy bear that went to war will be at the Winchester City Space, while the J-type truck can be seen on visits to Basingstoke, Alton and Andover. Specially commissioned mural One of the most stunning features of the Soldiers’ Journey exhibition will be a striking mural which weaves a story around the impact of the war on people’s lives in Hampshire. The acclaimed illustrator, Esther Coombs, has been commissioned to create this remarkable artwork – the full version of which will be on display at the SeaCity Museum in Southampton and the Aldershot Military Museum. Other venues will display sections of the mural which is relevant to their locality. Something for the children All exhibitions will have interactive elements for children to enjoy where there will be fantastic games and activities, plus the opportunity to dress up as a First World War soldier or nurse. At Milestones - the Living History Museum in Basingstoke - the theme of the Soldiers’ Journey exhibition has been specially adapted for a younger audience. The exhibition is now open and visitors can join Tom

and Emily (two children living in the First World War) as they investigate a suspected German spy, make friends with a cavalry officer and his horse, and learn about allies from the Empire. They can also write their own war diary and see Hampshire’s home front from a new perspective. The Soldiers’ Journey exhibition is part of a programme of exhibitions and events throughout Hampshire which will focus on the 100th commemoration of the First World War. Hampshire played a critical role in the First World War. In addition to 8 million departing troops, the County also saw a steady flow of refugees, prisoners of war and 1 million wounded soldiers coming back to England. At one point there were 59 auxiliary hospitals across the County treating the soldiers’ injuries. This rapid and dramatic increase in population also saw the production of food, munitions and armaments reach higher levels than ever before. Hampshire County Council, Southampton City Council and Winchester City Council have jointly been awarded grant funding from Arts Council England to deliver a programme of exhibitions and events which will focus on the 100th anniversary of the First World War. At the heart of this partnership is the emerging Hampshire Cultural Trust, which will allow museums and galleries across Hampshire to take their programming to a new level over the next few years. The Hampshire Cultural Trust being established later this year in partnership by Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council will be a new charitable company limited by guarantee to deliver arts, museums and heritage services. As a larger and charitable organisation, this would provide the potential to generate significant additional investment, safeguarding the collections for the future. T

he season of Globe on Screen at The Berry Theatre continues on October 9 when Macbeth will be shown at the Hedge End venue.

When three witches tell Macbeth that he is destined to occupy the throne

of Scotland, he and his wife choose to become the instruments of their fate and kill the first man standing in their path, the virtuous King Duncan.

Tickets can be purchased at the door, or; online at www.spencermusicfestival.co.uk Pages of Wickham Waltham Chase Post Office Or write to spencermusicfestival@gmail.com The festival is very grateful to the parish committees for their help and for allowing the use of the churches as venues.

But to maintain his position, Macbeth must keep on killing – first Banquo, his old comrade-in-arms; then, as the atmosphere of guilt and paranoia thickens, anyone who seems to threaten his tyrant’s crown.

Founded by Ulrikke Henninen and Edward Daniel, the latter of whom has lived in Shedfield the majority of his life, the Festival invites musicians from a breadth of international talent and hopes to represent the true spirit of chamber music.

From its mesmerising first moments to the last fulfilment of the witches’ prophecy, Shakespeare’s gripping account of the profoundest engagement with the forces of evil enthrals the imagination.

It is a rare opportunity for young ambitious professional musicians to deliver a project of lasting worth. With support from the local community their audience is encouraged to return year on year.

Choir prepares World Premiere P

ortsmouth Festival Choir will start rehearsals next week for their November concert which is in commemoration of the First World War. The choir will perform the world premiere of a new work entitled ‘1914 - and they went to war.’ This is the work of Adrian Bawtree, who was at one time organist at St Mary’s Portsea. The words are a mixture of propaganda slogans, wartime songs such as Lili Marlene and poems by contemporaries including Lord Tennyson. The work is a twenty first century commentary on the events of 19141918 and will contrast with the other major work in the concert, Elgar’s The Spirit of England, which was written at the time of the conflict.

This is a patriotic setting of poems by Laurence Binyon, whose beautiful poem For the Fallen is always spoken on Remembrance Day, The choir will also perform A Farewell to Arms by Gerald Finzi and Parry’s rousing Jerusalem. The choir rehearses every Monday evening from 7.15 to 9.15 at Portsmouth Academy for Girls, in St Mary’s Road, PO1 5PF. New members are always welcome. Award winning botanical artist’s exhibition

H

ot on the heels of Twenty Artists for Twenty Years, an exhibition to celebrate local creative talent and twenty years of trading, Hardings is delighted to be hosting a solo exhibition by natural history artist, Sarah Morrish. Sarah’s passion for illustrating the natural world stems from a childhood fascination with the subject and her work in the field of ecology and conservation. Her artwork depicts natural forms in a variety of media. Her exquisitely detailed watercolours of botanical subjects have won several awards including a Certificate of Botanical Merit for her ‘A view inside - Echinacea purpurea’ from the Society of Botanical Artists, London. The collection of paintings that will be exhibited at Hardings will depict a cabinet of natural curiosities, ranging from shells and stones, to birds and feathers, along with some of her botanical art work. Watercolour is the predominant medium she uses, but her detailed work is also portrayed using acrylics on natural linen canvas. In addition she often explores the world of printmaking, producing hand cut and printed lino-cuts, several of which have been published in a poetry anthology about freshwater birds. Sarah enjoys sharing her passion and skills by teaching independently, at the Hants & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Peter Symonds College AHEd. Sarah’s exhibition will be showing at Hardings 4th – 18th November.

Hardings’ gallery manager, Claire Weston, comments: “Being a keen gardener and frequent walker, prone to collecting pebbles or leaves along the way, I am in awe of Sarah’s ability to capture, in minuscule detail, the variations of nature’s bounty. Her works sometimes show natural objects painted in regimented groups, brilliantly showing off their variations. It is these and her botanical pieces which are particularly reminiscent of the beautiful historical watercolours employed to illustrate ancient herbals and pharmacopoeia. These works are like snapshots of intriguing collections one might find in numerous museums’ natural history displays; you’ll find yourself transfixed as you explore the subjects.” Hardings has been providing bespoke framing services and selling original and limited edition artwork in Warsash for twenty years. Hardings offers a range of framing solutions so that you can create a beautiful piece to take pride of place in your home. Framing your art and memorabilia doesn’t just look good, if you use the correct materials it can help to preserve it as well. Jem Weston and his team are happy to offer advice and help on any framing requirement. For further information visit Hardings Picture Framers and Gallery at 11 Shore Road, Warsash or give us a ring on 01489 571882 and you can follow us on Facebook.com/Hardings Picture Framers and Gallery or Twitter.com/@hardingswarsash.

Care fees M

eeting the cost of residential and nursing care in old age is a growing issue for many people in the UK. As life expectancy continues to lengthen, more of us can expect to need some form of long term care. While the state can help with some costs, eligibility for help is limited and many people find the value of their income and/or assets take them over the threshold for state support. Care cap – from April 2016, there are some changes to the way you pay for, and are assessed for help with long term care fees. A £72,000 cap on care costs is being introduced. However, the cap applies to direct care costs only and at the local authority rate and the care cap only starts to accumulate once your needs have been assessed as ‘critical’ or ‘substantial’. You will still be liable to pay around £12,000 per year for accommodation and during the 5.7 years it takes to reach the £72,000 care cap, the average person will have paid out a total of £178,957 – these figures are based on the average cost of care homes in the uk as a whole. Regional variations will apply. One solution could be the purchase of an immediate care plan with a single one-off lump sum – this is an annuity which will pay a regular, tax free income to your registered care provider, starting immediately on commencement of the plan. The amount you will receive is agreed at outset and will continue for the rest of your life, regardless of how long that is. This can be bought even if you have already moved into a care home.
