MARCH 2013
The weather still continues to show a reluctance to warm up and give us that lovely spring feeling, although somehow the determined daffodils still manage to burst their way through the frosty ground; so for this April a very warm welcome from all at Solent Life as we offer you a little bit of that missing sunshine through our pages. With shops quickly selling out of Easter eggs, I was inspired to try and make some for my grandson – how hard can it be, I thought. Now this attempt wasn’t just a ‘buy some chocolate and melt it into a mould’ sort of effort, oh no, this was from scratch – making my own chocolate first. So starting with just pure ground cocoa powder (okay so I dispensed with the process of roasting beans and grinding them – a step too far for a first try), I gathered my own mix of ingredients and set to work. Now if you ever want to see a real mess – just try making chocolate just using hand tools (no mixer). Mixing, blending, melting, tempering and then tasting was actually quite a long process and the taste tests resulted in frequent grimaces from my wife, requiring a re-melt and sweeter revisions to the mix. Each time round the loop adds a little more mess I hasten to add. Eventually, the mix was perfect, the texture as smooth as silk and the taste divine; so into the moulds it goes. It took me ages to discover what I had done wrong and why, after three hours in the freezer, it was still not set. Okay, so I have temporarily given up on Easter eggs having only created a wonderful ganache that my wife may be able to use as a cake filling. I will try again later, but I have to admit that this experience has given me a tremendous respect for chocolatiers that do this in their sleep and without making a mess. I don’t think that Hotel Chocolat is in any danger of new competition any time soon. | MANAGING EDITOR So with Easter now behind us and my kitchen clean again, I hope you all enjoy our varied April collection of features and especially, enjoy the spring.

y p p a of H With the cold weather continuing, here at Solent Life we felt we should bring you at least a flavour of spring with this month’s featured artist. We discovered the work of Kate Spratt in the White Dog Gallery in Lee-on-the-Solent and her slightly abstract, swirling, bright, colourful images of English meadows stood out from the other works around and seemed the perfect antidote for grey and cold days. In a quaint Hayling Island gift shop and gallery, ‘The Contemporary Home’, Kate sat and told us about what inspires her as an artist. “I grew up here on Hayling Island and living here gives me all the inspiration I need, how can you live here and not be inspired!” she said. Kate is a great believer in being part of the community where she grew up and supporting Hayling businesses; she works part-time as receptionist at the Hayling Island Sailing Club, and she has found the views across the water from this friendly and busy club on her lunch breaks inspiring at times and the members have always been supportive of her and her artwork. Her work, along with that of other local artists, can also be found at the Contemporary Home, a charming gift shop and gallery that only set up at the beginning of the year but have already held charity shopping nights; Kate always likes to support Hayling Businesses whenever she can.

artist | review Words by David Rose-Massom ART FOCUS S P O N S O R S H I P
“I did study art at Havant College but people who create art have always found the process enjoyable throughout their lives,” Kate continued. “I am no different and the fact that I live here, I can only be inspired by what is around me. I love the freedom that comes with my work, I love light and the shimmer of water and so fish were a perfect subject as well, being that I am so close to the sea.”
DID YOU KNOW? This month we focus on Henri Matisse who was born in Northern France on New Year’s Eve 1869. He initially studied Law but it was an attack of appendicitis that led him to paint as his Mother bought him art supplies whilst he was convalescing. Throughout his career, he painted, drew, produced his famous cut-outs and was also a sculptor. Matisse died of a heart attack in 1954.
“I don’t use normal fish, and similarly I suppose with my flowers and all my art; it is a bit of a statement I feel; bold and eye-catching, colourful and free. I did not want to produce art that would just blend in with a room; I wanted to achieve an effect that as someone walks into a room it draws a glance, but at the same time complimenting the setting it is in,” she said, adding, “You have realism all around you, everywhere in life, and it’s nice just to have a portal through to another, slightly abstract, world.”
He left us with the following wisdom: “From the moment I held the box of colours in my hands, I knew this was my life. I threw myself into it like a beast that plunges towards the thing it loves.” “It has bothered me all my life that I do not paint like everybody else.” “It is not enough to place colours, however beautiful, one beside the other; colours must also react on one another. Otherwise, you have cacophony.”
Kate explained that she likes to do things a little different, and not do what everyone else is doing.
“It is nice to do things with a slightly different spin on it, I want to give people something in their lives that they don’t have already. My flowers and fish are quite free in their construction and although you need a balanced composition, you still have the freedom with the colours and how you apply them. I love the feel of English meadows or the exotic of Hawaiian flowers – they bring the feeling of happy.”

the | walk
Tide and Time!
To say it was a bracing walk would be an understatement, hunkered down into my quilted jacket the wind still bit at my neck and face; but when a walk begins at East Wittering, passes through the West version and onto the National Trust sand dunes at East Head, it is worth putting up with a little cold. West Wittering is the more popular beach, with its sandy shore and well managed conservation area but on my most recent visit, I felt like beginning a little way down the coast at East Wittering. Stood by the Fisherman’s Hut I pondered whether to turn left toward Brackelsham Bay and Selsey Bill, or right to West Wittering and East Head. It was the fact that the cold wind would be in my back and more comfortable to begin the walk that I turned right. Although the tide was out and the going would be firm and dry on the shore I stayed on the footpath above the beach. The main reason for staying up on the shingle covered footpath was just pure nosiness; it meant a better look at the houses that huddle close to the shore. These vary from no more than a waterproof, ramshackle hut to magnificent manor houses and stunning thatched cottages. For part of the way houses and shore are separated by a moat-like ditch with everything from plain wooden walkways to ornate arched bridges crossing the divide; a drawbridge and portcullis would not look out of place on some of them. In some gardens, plants stand like works of art sculpted, shaped and bent by the constant onshore wind and while in others driftwood, that has been fashioned by the rubbing of water and tide, form makeshift sculptures that decorate the gardens while waiting for spring flowers and leaf to arrive. Down on the shoreline, dogs scamper and play, not bothered in the slightest by the cold or the chilly puddles of water, while their owners walk with heads bowed and no doubt longing for a warm kitchen and a hot drink.

When the time came to turn round and head back the wind had dropped and the skies had turned blue and as the day drew to a close the coldness became bearable as I trudged back to the car at East Wittering, passing again from sand to shingle and admiring once more those wonderful homes that line the shore. This is one of those walks that is both wonderful and inspiring no matter what the season or the weather and the light late in the day and the sunsets are truly magnificent; and all of this is just across the border in West Sussex.

the | walk
As the sun broke through the morning greyness it still offered no warmth but what it did do was throw sparkling jewels across the surface of the sea and had them dance on the calm waters that just brushed against the shore in wave after incessant wave. No matter what the weather, there is something magical about shoreline walks. It is not far from East to West Wittering and the line between the two is easy to spot as the footpath changes from shingle to the fine sand that produces sculptured soft dunes that flow and alter in the wind. Also the houses seem to get bigger and more ornate. Please keep to the marked footpaths through any of the dunes as roped off areas are there to protect the dunes both as a landscape and as a habitat for flora and fauna. The walking gets tougher as the dunes rise and fall and the sand gets even softer but on reaching the popular West Wittering Beach and its colourful beach huts, it also means the café is there for a welcome warm cuppa. This area was saved from commercial development by local residents who formed a company and purchased the land. In late 1951 it became known that the Church Commissioners were in discussion with either Billy Butlin or the National Union of Mineworkers with a view to establishing a holiday complex at West Wittering. The Commissioners then owned the foreshore and nearby coastal farming land. To avoid losing the wonderful local landscape 126 residents subscribed to a new company and the West Wittering Estate Limited was born. In July 1952, the company bought the land for £20,546.14.9d The company’s main objectives was then and remains to this day; ‘the preservation of the beach and waters adjoining the company’s land for the safe and peaceful enjoyment of the public and the preservation of the rural and undeveloped nature of the company’s property and its surroundings’. The area is as beautiful and untouched as it was when I was taken there as a child, through taking my own children and now my grandson, generations have continued to enjoy West Wittering as a safe and stunning place to visit. Warmed by a cup of tea it was on to the marvellous, and strange, landscape of East Head. This area is one of the fastest moving sand and shingle spits in the UK and is one of the last surviving pieces of natural coastline in Sussex; a treasured example of the nationally rare and fragile, yet dynamic, sand-dune habitat. This has to be one of the best beaches in the area and is an ideal place to walk, play and watch wildlife and you may even be lucky enough to spot the occasional seal.

Locks Heath is one such area. Situated roughly midway between Portsmouth and Southampton, Locks Heath Shopping Village is that with its blend of chain and independent traders, and benefits from a 450 space car park offering free parking. The Locks Heath Shopping Village first opened in 1983 serving Fareham and the surrounding area with around 30 retail stores and since then the surrounding area has grown and expanded making this an even more vibrant centre. How did a veteran of Waterloo Road and Land Girls on TV and various Mike Leigh films on screen end up playing an overweight laundress living in racially segregated Baltimore, Maryland, in 1962 – and singing and dancing eight times a week with it? “This got mentioned a few years ago, actually, but nothing ever came of it,” says the ever-amiable Middlesbrough native, speaking in a London rehearsal room just prior to the start of the tour. “I then got a call and thought, `What the hell?’ I’ve always tried to do different things and keep people guessing, so it’s nice to go, `Yeah, why not?’” He laughs as he recalls one particular remark: “I remember when I left college, someone said, `Being big, don’t you worry about being typecast?’ and I thought, well, if I’m being typecast, I’m working.” And, with Hairspray, on something that comes with “an awful lot of new challenges”. Benton did plays with music while studying at RADA, the prestigious London drama school, but he doesn’t read music so knew he was sailing into unknown territory on that front alone. What’s more, he has never before played an American. “But that’s all part of the challenge, and it’s a good one and it’s something as an actor where you can say, `OK, let’s go!’”
solent | thearter
“Part of it is that you want the fear some times; you want that thing of `I don’t know if I can do this.’ It’s also great in your career, or at least in my career, for me to try to do stuff that I’m not necessarily comfortable doing. That’s all part of the game, I suppose.” Benton is coming to terms with a part that requires the physically capacious Edna to do a fair share of shimmying herself, all the while sporting a costume that can leave the given actor absolutely dripping with sweat after a show. “I’ve had the fat suit on and it’s a killer, though it’s only when you take it off that you realise that your t-shirt is soaking wet,” says Benton, who on this topic takes the pragmatic view. “I’ve wanted to lose weight for a while now, so I think this is going to be an easy way to do it. And a fun way, too? “Exactly: it’s all a good thing – all good – and if I eat right, I’ll lose weight; there are no two ways about it.” Benton lives on the South Coast with his wife and three children, ages 14, 12, and 7, and his wife runs the upscale Lion Street Store in the East Sussex town of Rye. How, then, does he feel about touring? “It was a tricky decision, if I’m honest, but we came to it together, and I thought, if I don’t do it now, I’ll probably never do it. It would be nice to have done it in the West End but that wasn’t an option so you kind of go, `I want to do the show,’ and if you want to do the show, you have to go on tour.” Again, he takes the longer view: “Actors are essentially nomads anyway, so you go where the work is.” As it happens, Benton appeared just after Xmas on the ITV1 show Panto!, starring alongside two actresses, Sheridan Smith and Samantha Spiro, who between them have won three Olivier Awards for doing musicals on stage. (Smith has an additional Olivier for a non-musical.) Did these two musical stalwarts offer Benton any advice? “No,” he says with a smile. “They just said, `You’ll love it; you’ll enjoy it. Just throw yourself in there’ – and so, I am.”

Blooming Marvellous Holidays
S
trolling through wildflower meadows, admiring rare exotic blooms whilst enjoying the peace and quiet of a country garden, the British public seem to love nothing better than walking around the many gardens and country estates that Great Britain has to offer. So much so that interest in Garden Holidays is on the rise and this has not been missed by the Royal Horticultural Society, whom have teamed up with Collette Worldwide Holidays and Wendy Wu the China specialists, to put together their very own brochures specialising in Garden holidays. Collette Worldwide Holidays are well known for their fully escorted touring holidays and this sits perfectly with such specialised touring as Garden Holidays. The brochure is packed with holidays far and wide from the Loire Valley to New Zealand’s very own garden Route, offering you the chance to visit private gardens not usually open to the public as well as private entry to public gardens. Whilst certain dates will have a specialist RHS tour leader, such as a curator from one of their very own gardens or an experienced horticulturist with particular expertise on the specific region, either way this is guaranteed to give added horticultural depth to the overall holiday experience. 26…

Calling time on crime Simon Hayes is the first ever Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire, having been elected in the November 2012 elections. His role is to oversee and scrutinise policing in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, and will collaborate with others in the criminal justice sector to produce an efficient and effective system. Solent Life Editor Dave Hill recently met with the Commissioner to discover what this new role is all about…
“It is not a question of what was broken with the old system but rather what was not working in the best way to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. The previous authority was basically a ‘best practices’ role but did not have the input into the handling of crime – the added part to my job is the ‘and crime’ bit of the Police and Crime Commissioner. Ideas for preventing crime, re-offending and antisocial behaviour make this the only role in public 32…

life that has a span across so many other public bodies including councils, the judiciary, social services, education, etc. My role is to influence rather than have statutory control and through that influence prevent crime and bring about social change. There are certain areas throughout the county where there are deep-rooted problems and difficulties and I have been visiting schools in those areas to see how we can work with the school
re-offending rather than just solving crime. In many cases the victims of crime are not getting satisfaction through the sentencing system, or indeed with early release, so part of my brief is to speak to the judiciary and magistrates about that end of the process.
In the four months I have been in this role as Commissioner I have had to recruit a new Chief Constable for Hampshire as well as produce the Police and Crime Plan to cover the next four years; and as far as the job is concerned it has lived up to my expectations and there has been a great deal of goodwill toward me and the office of the Commissioner. If I am beginning to get my message across and people are beginning to think differently then I have already started to make a difference.” The Police and Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Simon Hayes, was talking to Solent Life Editor, Dave Hill.
To discover more: Tel: 01962 871595 E-Mail: opcc@hampshirepnn.police.uk www.hampshire-pcc.org.uk For the full version of the Police and Crime Plan visit: www.hampshire-pcc.gov.uk Previously Simon Hayes was the Chairman of Crimestoppers for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, the charity dedicated to preventing crime. He is also a past Chairman of Hampshire Police Authority, the organisation that the Police and Crime Commissioner replaced, and has been the Leader of New Forest District Council and a County Councillor for Hampshire. Simon studied criminology and social policy, for which he holds a Bsc degree, and has worked as a criminologist with an interest in preventing re-offending, particularly associated with crimes linked to drug and alcohol abuse. and to keep children away from crime and drugs. I would argue that my role is the only one in public life, to support those young people in this way. Real social change takes generations but it has to start somewhere and yet when I go to meetings it is the same things that come across each time and that is we are not explaining to our children what is right and what is wrong. There is a message to be taken out there and with our police working with groups we can start to bring about change; but it is a big challenge! I was here as Chair of the Police Authority, which this office has replaced, and also a councillor in Hampshire, and then in 2004 I took an interest in criminology and began visiting prisons where I discovered a big factor many of the inmates had in common was the deprived backgrounds, or something in their background that led them toward crime. Society did not support or understand those people or their mindset! People do find themselves in circumstances beyond their control and often we don’t have that community spirit or understanding for others. In the role I have been elected to, it is my job, and desire, to do something; and that is not an impossible dream but neither is it an easy one. I need evidence to show that a system works, and when it does work, then to implement it across the county. I am here to represent the people and I am elected by them to speak on their behalf to the police, but I also have a role to speak to the public about the police. I have the responsibility to speak out in both directions; but my ultimate responsibility is to the public and this is a very privileged role. The interaction between police and public is normally when they have done something wrong or need help and I need to work on both sides of that divide and there is a real opportunity here to steer people away from the criminal justice system! The police do get it; they do understand about giving guidance rather than the negative of just arresting people; however, they are perhaps not always able to exercise discretion or commonsense because actions may be dictated by the demands of the target based system. Politicians also educate the public that imprisonment will change people and that is not always the case. Since beginning this job I have had a real education in modern policing and the intelligence they gather into possible crimes. It is through that intelligence and good planning that they can stop crime and we do have a priority of preventing crime and

FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF Georgina Wilson qualified a little over ten years ago in holistic/beauty therapies and has now launched her own home-based salon in Whitely called “Georgina’s Beauty”. Georgina offers a wide range of treatments and works alongside Dr. Xavier G. (of the award-winning clinic Dr Xavier G. Medi-Spa, Southampton) in recommending an ultrapremium botanical range of skincare, make-up and nutritional supplements. The products are free from chemicals such as parabens, mineral oils and other “nasties” and are even vegan-certified. The nutritional products are whey-free, soya-free, lactose-free and gluten-free making them suitable for almost anyone.
Although the products are ultra-premium in quality they are available at every-day high street/department store prices because of the way they are distributed, thus cutting out the ‘middlemen’ and are delivered direct to you, the client. The treatments, under the name of Arbonne, are Swiss formulated and botanically-based and have been around for over 30 years. Georgina told Solent Life, “I took on the Arbonne range because their long-standing commercial success has been brought about by word-of-mouth, rather than by expensive advertising or marketing campaigns. I personally know a few doctors who are recommending Arbonne products to their patients - even clinics in Harley Street! In my opinion, satisfied and happy clients who share their experiences of wellbeing through the product range carried far more weight with me as a therapist. Clients that try Arbonne, continue to use the range due to the exceptional results achieved.” “With all these superb; and well-proven products, plus my own skills gained over more than a decade in the industry, I firmly believe I can make women feel better about themselves,” Georgina continued, “That feeling of wellbeing only improves the quality of life for women.”

I love Italian cuisine, it is so much more than just pizza and pasta, although both are great, it is about atmosphere, bonhomie, charm, enjoyment and good food; and although restaurateur Franco may well have lost much of his Italian accent when speaking English he has lost none of his Italian flair and passion for serving great food.
Out in the kitchen is his partner, best friend and fellow Italian, Paolo; a superb chef who, believe me, is the king of sauces; and between the two of them since opening their restaurant, Franco and Paolo, last October has seen the Locks Heath venue become an amazing success and popular community eatery. The dining room is decorated with classic black and white images of Italian scenes and film stills and the seating is high backed and very comfortable, and throw in Franco and his staff’s warm welcome, and you have an atmosphere and comfort that will enhance your dining experience. It may have been grey and cold outside but inside there was the warmth and hospitality of sunny Italy as all the tables gradually filled. Franco wanted the new eatery to become a part of the community, somewhere where, not only would people drive to enjoy his food, but also walk from work or from home around the corner to enjoy his eating out; for that reason on the lunch time menu there is a pizza or pasta dish, with soft drink, for just £5.95. “I have created a community restaurant, something that local families will enjoy and so we had to create a menu that also made it affordable for them. Plus Paolo is a wonderful chef, the quality of the pizza is all about the dough, and Paolo is one of the best!” he told us on a recent visit. I went for the Daily Special menu, while our editor Dave, chose from the main menu. To begin it was the Fegatini e Funghi al Marsala; chicken livers and mushrooms with garlic, pan-fried in Marsala wine sauce. Chicken livers are an often underused ingredient but there is a softness to the texture on biting that also feels a little coarse on the tongue, the flavours are gentle and yet full and makes for a superb starter.

The Funghi Dolcellate is another gentle dish that coats the tongue with flavour, thick slices of mushroom that stay firm and keep their great flavour, in an amazing sauce that is served on ciabatta, Dave smiled with every mouthful and, as I did with my starter, enjoyed the blend of flavour and texture. Although Franco and Paolo love the cuisine from their respective parts of Italy, and they intend over future months to introduce more of their regional dishes, they are still happy to stretch what they prepare just a little. Hence a duck dish on the menu, when this meat is not that popular in Italy, but the fusion of the meat with an authentic Italian preparation made the dish work. The Anatra is tender duck breast, cooked just slightly pink as it should be, but diners are asked how it is preferred, and served on a potato rosti with an amazing cranberry and orange jus. The sauce was so rich it could take you on an allexpenses paid holiday to Monaco, it was simply stunning, no other word for it, and yet it did nothing to hide the delicious flavour of the duck, this was an amazing dish. The rosti was soft and fluffy inside with a crisp coating, the vegetables, all pan fried, were perfect consistency and packed with original taste. Dave’s pasta dish of Rigatoni al Forno, may well have just been a simple meal of pasta, but once again the sauce of this ovenbaked dish brought it way above a standard pasta concoction; the chicken, pancetta, tomato, cream and cheeses, parmesan and mozzarella, added taste and texture to another fabulous main course. The panna cotta on the menu was very inviting, but it was the classic Tiramisu that made me find room for dessert, and it was

cleansing on the palate, as well as a soft mixture of smooth and rough with that gentle coffee flavour, the perfect way to finish an Italian meal; or so I thought! Then I tasted some of Dave’s Coppa Ameretti; layers of Mascarpone, caramel and vanilla then topped with Ameretti biscuit – an epic dessert. Franco originally from Calabria, Southern Italy, is an Italian entrepreneur with a passion and a flair for food. As a proud Italian he believes in using the best quality ingredients and is committed to providing exceptional customer service. As the current owner of Panini’s Café Bar in Park Gate, Franco has extensive experience in starting, owning & running a variety of Italian Catering & Hospitality businesses. He formerly owned two restaurants and managed several others over a period of 20 years. Paolo originally from Positano, on the Almalfi coast, is a very talented Italian chef who met Franco over 25 years ago and an intense bond was formed between the two men. Paolo has worked in some of Southampton’s & London’s top restaurants. Between both of them, they have a huge amount of experience in Italian Restaurants and what they want to provide are the traditional classics, plus local specials from their respective regions for you to explore and sample. Our meal, without drinks came in at a little under £25 a head, offering excellent value for money but there is the lunchtime option of the £5.95 pizza and pasta treat. If you wish to eat at weekends then advance booking is essential.

Tea Sets in the City The modern trend of American style coffee houses filling the streets of our city centres has been quite relentless; but at last there may be a fight back with a welcome resurgence of the good, old-fashioned, English Tea Room and there is no better example than in Southampton’s Bedford Place with Halladay’s Tea Room. Breakfast, morning coffee, afternoon tea and, of course, the good old favourite the cream tea are all on offer and Solent Life, after a day trawling the local shops and in need of refreshment decided it was time to go for the full works. The cosy interior of this charming tea room is a cheerful mix of red and blacks and the clientele is a cross section of young, old and professionals. The atmosphere is as charming as the décor and the staff are well turned out in their red and black uniforms and knowledgeable about the menus and the range of teas on offer. Around the walls are the menu blackboards, with dishes neatly described in chalk and advertising everything from traditional scampi and chips to the more exotic ingredients such as avocados and halloumi cheese. The sandwiches on offer must have had some twenty or more fillings available, something for every taste and hunger level! Halladay’s is owned and run by daughter and mother team Jade and Lorraine, but while mum is busy with her Swanwick pub, a pocket-sized Jade keeps things running beautifully at the tea rooms. It is just as well she is tiny, as everything that comes from the kitchen is down to her and it is a small, but very efficient, cooking and preparation area. We were in an English Tea Room, it was mid-afternoon, and so it had to be a classic afternoon tea selection! A warm, flaky and soft fruit scone; a tub full of clotted cream, soft butter and a small jar of quality strawberry jam; terrific, traditional and delicious. It was served on the middle layer of a towering three tier cake stand, on the top a very moist and very tempting wedge of carrot cake, on the bottom a fine selection of quartered sandwiches, with crusts removed of course – bliss! 48…

Thin, and rich flavoured, slices of smoked salmon, clean and delicious in taste and texture; ham sandwiches with proper chutney and strangely man-size bites despite the delicate presentation. It would not be afternoon tea without cheese and cucumber and my personal favourite the ‘eggy’ sandwich, but nice sliced pieces of egg at Halladay’s and not all mashed up in an unrecognisable mush of mayonnaise. I took a moment to make room for the carrot cake and while sipping on my Redbush tea, gazed out of the window at the bustling thoroughfare that is Bedford Place, and it is a very busy road with a scurrying student population, classic shoe shops such as French’s, fashion shops, bars, burger joints and all kinds of retail and hospitality outlets. I realised that just by stepping through the doorway of this charming tea room that I had left the big city outside and was now sitting in a cocoon of charm and tranquillity. Now, it was the big test, being a fan of carrot cake I have tried various confections under this name across the south coast from Brighton to Bournemouth, would Halladay’s live with the competition? There was no buttercream topping, but as I took the first mouthful there was the realisation that with everything else on the cake stand that had gone before it would have been a very rich finale. As it turned out the fat wedge of cake was moist, tasty and nicely textured. It was an excellent and very tasty end to a lovely mid-afternoon feast and break from the trials and tribulations of retail therapy in the big city. It felt as if the afternoon tea had been taken in a village tearoom rather than in the midst of a busy city main street and it certainly was a welcome change to the Americanised
coffee houses. This was comfortable eatery that offered good food, good service and an oasis of calm. Sometimes the simple things in life are the best and it is very easy to get those simple things wrong, young Jade, and her mother, served food that was thoughtfully and carefully prepared and served by well-trained staff. A little bit of old England had been returned to our streets and very welcome it was too, highly recommended.

“There is a forgotten, nay almost forbidden word, which means more to me than any other. That word is England.” Sir Winston Churchill
DRAGON SLAYER Apologies to our fellow Brits but it is St George’s Day and we are all English in our office; that said he is a saint we share with many other countries but as a nation we English do seem rather shy in celebrating the day of our patron saint. So, who was he and was he really a dragonslaying super soldier? To begin with he was not even born in England; he was the offspring of Christian parents, in AD 270, in a place called Cappadocia, which is now Eastern Turkey. Facts of St George’s life have passed through the centuries growing in legend and myth but he must have been a man with a strong and upstanding character for his reputation to have survived for almost 1,700 years! There are, of course, many accounts and stories giving what are believed to be the facts outlining the life of England’s Patron Saint, born to a Greek father and Libyan mother, but we at least do know that he moved to Palestine with his Mother before becoming a Roman soldier and rising to a high rank. It does appear he was a man of conviction with his faith for he later resigned his military position and protested against his pagan leader, the Emperor Diocletian (245-313 AD), who led Rome’s persecution of Christians. His rebellion against the Emperor resulted in imprisonment,

but a few; and virtually every country in Europe and the Commonwealth has a church dedicated to the foremost of military Saints. During World War II King George VI established the George Cross for outstanding acts of Civilian Valour and one of the earliest recipients was the Island of Malta, for its outstanding courage in the face of the constant bombardment by the Italian and German Air forces. The George Cross was given its name by the King but does bear an image of St George slaying the dragon. However, most people’s knowledge of St George does not go beyond the legend of ‘St George and The Dragon’; and few of us know much about that either! The tale of St George and the dragon is over a thousand years old and tells of the dragon who made its nest by a fresh water spring near the town of Silene in Libya. When people came to collect water, they inadvertently disturbed the dragon, which was not a good idea, and so offered sheep as a distraction. When their stock of sheep ran a bit low the people of Silene decided to choose a maiden from the town instead and lots were drawn to find the ‘lucky’ virgin. When the results were read, it was revealed that the princess was to be the dragon’s next victim and despite the Monarch’s protestations his daughter Cleolinda was offered to the dragon; but as luck would have it a hero rode to the rescue… At the moment of offering, a knight from the Crusades rode by on his white stallion; St George dismounted and drew his sword and protecting himself with the sign of the cross, he fought the dragon on foot and managed to slay the beast and thereby saved the princess. The people of Silene were so grateful that they abandoned their pagan beliefs and converted to Christianity. That said most images of St George do depict him mounted and fighting the dragon with a lance. Whatever the tales and legends the half Greek, half Libyan, Roman soldier who died for his Christian beliefs in the 4th century, slayed dragons in the 11th century and inspired crusaders in the 12th century; by all accounts was a true warrior and it is no wonder that so many have chosen him as their patron saint and rallied to his flag!

but even after torture he stayed true to his faith as the Emperor had St George dragged through the streets of Nicomedia, Turkey, on the 23rd of April 303 AD before having him beheaded. The Emperor’s own wife was so inspired by St George’s bravery and loyalty to his religion, that she too converted to Christianity; but that did not work out too well as she to was subsequently executed for her faith. In 1222 the Council of Oxford declared that April 23rd was to be St George’s Day but it was not until 1348 that St George became the Patron Saint of England. Then in 1415, St George’s Day was declared a national holiday in England. But, following the Union with Scotland at the end of the 18th Century, the tradition of celebrating St George’s Day began to disappear and soon ceased to be seen as a national holiday. The earliest references to St George came from a Scot, St Adomnán, the Abbot of Iona in Scotland, in the 7th Century when he mentioned George’s courageous exploits, which had been told to him by a French bishop who had travelled to Jerusalem with the crusaders; and as those Crusaders returned to England they brought with them more tales of St George, and his reputation grew. A church in Fordington, an area of Dorchester, records a ‘miracle appearance’, where an image of St George presented himself outside Jerusalem in 1099 and led the Crusaders into battle. The story of George is etched into stone over the southern door of the church which still stands today and is the earliest known church in England to be dedicated to the patron Saint. Later in the 14th century English soldiers began wearing a sign of St George on their chest and backs, as the Saint was regarded as a special protector of the English. It was in the year 1415 AD that St. George was the strength for English Soldiers under Henry V as they won the battle of Agincourt. Shakespeare, who died on St George’s Day, wrote the immortal battle cry for Henry V; ‘Cry God for Harry, England, and Saint George!' In more recent times, St George was chosen as the patron saint of Scouting, because of the ideals that he represents. He was such a popular man that he also became the Patron Saint of Barcelona in Catalonia, Aragon, Russia, Bavaria, Beirut, Czechoslovakia, Portugal, Lithuania and Hungary, to name

SEW WHAT!
The British Museum’s Egyptian Collection has an ivory carving which features a king wearing a quilted mantle and the oldest surviving quilted object, a linen carpet, is believed to be from the 1st century BC. Even Henry VIII of England lists quilts among his bed linen inventory and across the Solent Life region quilting is more popular than ever. In the charming garden workshop of quilting expert Rosemary Yeoman we chatted as fellow Meon Valley Quilters member Maxine measured out the sewing lines on a magnificent and beautiful wedding quilt she is making. “Many think that it is a Colonial America thing, but it was the settlers who took quilting out to America with them,” Rosemary explained. “Now, and over the last 20 years or so, the craft has seen a huge resurgence in this country.” As Maxine continued her measuring and marking out, Rosemary watched on carefully and anxiously; quilting demands great care as any hand crafted product does. “The thing with quilting is that you just get caught up in it and its many variations. Then there is the satisfaction of making something both unique and special.” 56…

Rosemary went on to explain that the craft was born from recycling. “Originally it was a way of recycling old clothing, people would use scraps of cloth, old clothes and the like, and stitch them together as a bed cover to keep them warm.” As she explained Rosemary showed me an American quilt she had which was indeed made from clothes scraps and backed with old feed sacks. As she shook the beautiful piece of craft-work you could still smell the feed that had ingrained in the cloth, what was even more amazing was that the intricate design had been hand sewn. “There are still many people who hand-sew quilts but many of us use modern machines now,” she added. Max’s stunning quilt was to be a belated wedding gift for her son and daughter-in-law, who married last Christmas, and the design carried patches of mistletoe, Christmas trees and snow flakes – it is a perfect wedding gift and when finished will have taken over six months to produce. Maxine explained, “It is a labour of love this one, but quilting is something that is not constant, it is something you can pick up and put down again – it certainly stops idle hands.” There was no time for idle hands for Maxine as she pointed out that the lines she was measuring would take some 800 to 1200 metres of cotton thread to finish the quilt. Rosemary’s garden workshop was the perfect space for working on a double quilt but it is something that can be done at home though, she said with the voice of experience, “You can always move the dining room table and chairs and measure it out on the floor!” A quilt is a sandwich of three layers. “The patchwork quilt top layer, the middle layer of wadding and then it is all sandwiched together by the backing cloth and it is patchworked through all three layers,” Rosemary explained. “The full name of the craft is actually Patchwork and Quilting.” Meon Valley Quilters was started in 2001 when Rosemary and a friend decided to form a group. “We placed an ad in our parish magazine and expected just 20 or so people to turn up, but we in fact had 80 arrive. We now have 100 members and a further 20 on the waiting list. Apart from the quilting we have regular monthly meetings, talks from various speakers and we also have an extensive library of quilting books.” Although we were watching a double quilt being produced, there is no need to start big. “It is not just bed covers that you can make, one of my favourite things is to make wall hangings, I much prefer them to pictures as they seem softer and more tactile than a print or painting.” “There are many other groups in the area for people to join and quilting gives you a chance to express yourself in fabric, and you also get to meet many like minded people which is brilliant.” Rosemary concluded, “It has taken over my life; Pete my husband is great at making coffee, at getting lunch and occasionally we even let him have an opinion.” Pete shrugged and smiled as he was indeed making the coffee!

It is one of those places that once you visit; you just have to keep returning . . .
I
t is not the biggest tourist attraction in the south, it has no thrill rides, no dangerous animals (unless you count the bolshie chicken that chases you round the yard), it does not even have anything with flashing lights and coin slots; and yet it is one of the best, most charming and fun filled few hours you can imagine and the kids will love it. Manor Farm is set back at the end of a long narrow lane that travels through one of the finest country parks there is. The River Hamble flows along the edge of the parkland which has wooded and waterside walks that will please and enthral with its wildlife and scenery and there are picnic grounds and play areas for the family to enjoy. As a family man and for Solent Life I have had the pleasure of visiting Manor Farm on many occasions. I have watched calves being born and gazed on, fascinated, as the Head Ranger helps as a ewe gives birth to a wet and gleaming lamb; and amidst these wonders of life the best view of all is when one of the period costumed farm workers hands over a newly hatched chick or a tiny piglet to a youngster and their faces break out into the biggest smiles you will ever see. modern theme park trickery or technology can replace that simple joy! Manor Farm is one of those venues that never appears to change much and yet on my most recent visit during February half-term everything of the non-animal variety, despite the muddy remnants of a wet winter, seemed brighter, cleaner and, dare I say it, more cared for; the animals are always in best condition and very well looked after. Last year the historic working farm gained national recognition when the BBC aired their year of filming at Manor Farm with the Wartime Farm series which began filming in September of 2011 and continued until it first went to air in September of last year. Although set up as a Victorian Farm for the everyday visitor the buildings and farmyard suited perfectly the programme which focused on the Second World War and all aspects of domestic and farming life of the period, using the farmhouse, farmyard and fields at Manor Farm as their setting. Presenters Peter Ginn, Ruth Goodman and Alex Langlands explored how people lived farmed and cooked food during the Second World War. Back to today’s modern visitors and there is something for everyone. For dad, there is machinery and tractors from many a bygone age, for mum, unless she is into tractors as well, there is the traditional kitchen with its wide blackened cooking range and the Victorian classroom lit by oil lamps

and with no computers but slate and chalk instead of iPads; and for the children there are chicks, ducks, rabbits and of course lambs as we enter lambing season. Whatever you find at Manor Farm, always remember it is still a working farm and has been for over 600 years, with experienced rangers and volunteers working as farm hands using traditional methods and tools to carry out the work. Beyond the duck pond at the end of the farmyard, there is the 13th century St Bartholomew’s church which is worth exploring too, although all that remains today is its chancel; it is a glorious picture when surrounded by the spring colours of daffodils and crocus. Manor Farm never ceases to charm and amaze its visitors, no matter how young or how old, it has to be one of the best places to visit for any family, especially when you add in the features of the surrounding country park. Traditional values and historic stories of how life was in an era long since gone; some children today have no idea that once upon a time there was no TV, no DVD or anything else with initials come to that. It was a time when pleasures were simple and life was hard but now as we look back on those times and see how our food was raised and our farmers lived it is a real eyeopener and great fun to enjoy for just one day at a time.

Do you know of a charity or worthwhile cause that needs some extra funding? Hamble Lifeboat was formed in 1968 as the Southampton Water Inshore Rescue Service (Hamble Rescue). Since its inception the service has attended, on average, 100 incidents per year, day and night, 365 days a year, in all weather conditions. The service has also evolved from having a small dory to having 2 of the most powerful 32ft ribs in service in the UK. The next challenge for the service is to replace our very run down lifeboat station, for which we now have been granted planning permission. The current building has no hot water, showers, or heating/ changing facilities, and nowhere to hang safety kit or a room to store it properly. The station is physically too small for the lifeboats which need to be virtually dismantled to get them into the station for maintenance. We are one of over 60 independant units around the UK coast. The crew is made up of volunteers who give their time and effort with the very vital support of their families. If you think you could support the service then please visit our website at www.hamblelifeboat.co.uk or come and see us on station every Saturday or Sunday morning before the crew go out on patrol. 62…

Just Home Improvements based in Locks Heath have recently launched a charity donation scheme to give something back to the local community. Each month they are donating £100 to a different cause, and they would love you to get involved! If you think a particular charitable organisation, or worthwhile cause locally deserves £100 then let them know. From charities, to school fund-raising projects, to deserving individuals in need, they want to know - the only condition is that it must be local. So far the response has been incredible and two local charities have already benefitted from this scheme, their February winner Families of Ocean Ward, a parent led charity set up to support families of heart children who are treated on the Ocean Ward at Southampton General Hospital www.oceanward.co.uk. Plus their winner for March The Stubbington Ark, who provide local RSPCA animal welfare services covering 400sq.miles including the Portsmouth and Southampton area. www.stubbingtonark.org.uk
Now it’s your chance to get involved...
Nominate and help decide the next winner of £100! 1. Simply visit www.justhomeimprovements.co.uk/charities and click the link to nominate your charity or cause on Facebook, or e-mail charity@justhomeimprovements.co.uk. Please don’t call with your nominations. 2. JHI select 3 charities each month from your suggestions at random, and hold a poll on Facebook - so you have the power to decide the charity that receives the donation cheque of £100. Ask your friends and family to vote for the charity you nominate. 3. JHI will contact the winner and announce the recipient of the £100 donation each month on their website.

An important step in supporting the elderly fund their choice of care Hamble Heights, a new luxury care home based in Park Gate, Southampton has launched an innovative way to pay for elderly care. Offering residential, specialist dementia and nursing care, their exciting ‘Move Now, Pay Later’ plan offers potential residents a level of flexibility where none previously existed. The ‘Move Now, Pay Later’ plan is unique - no other care home offers the same immediate support for new residents. In simple terms the plan allows a resident to move into Hamble Heights while their old property is being sold. Residents using the plan have a team of independent specialists’ value and market their property and only pay the backdated fees when their property is sold. Moira Baxter, General Manager said “When residents finally choose a care home they can sometimes be left disappointed. It takes time for a house to sell and a room can become filled while residents are waiting. Our plan allows residents to move into one of our rooms and pay for it later. They can settle into their new home without the worry of waiting for their old home to be sold.“

care | home
Country Care Home Blackbrook House on the edge of Fareham, is a Grade II listed Georgian family home that has been lovingly restored and filled with antiques; set in 3 acres of gently landscaped grounds it is a treasure of a house that is now run as a Care Home, and as much thought and dedication goes into the care of its elderly residents as went into the house. Solent Life recently visited the house and spoke with owner Stephen Press. “This is a house that was once a magnificent family home, then was taken over by the NHS and became a maternity hospital before we bought it. Following the refit in 2009 has now become a residence, holiday and respite home for the elderly in need of care; but we still pride ourselves in that we keep the feel as that of a family home!” he told us. While sitting in a drawing room that was lovingly furnished with antiques, Stephen proudly tells the story of many of the pieces, and went on to explain further about the family feel of the business. “The sale particulars from 1928 described Blackbrook House as a ‘fine Georgian residence with views across the Solent and Portsdown Hill; a 20 bedroom family home’... and we have taken great care to keep to that family home tradition. Following the million pound revamp this has become a purpose built home, now with 26 bedrooms, that still greet visitors as family, my parents are involved in the business, my sister is one of the cooks and even my nephew mows the lawns; it was important that we kept the house as a family home.

We have taken great care to make this as non-institutional as possible, it is important that when a resident enters through our doors they step into a family home atmosphere.” Stephen added as he and I wandered around the magnificent house, with its original watercolours on the walls and sparkling Czech-crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceilings; it looks anything but a care home, it could be a private house or exclusive hotel. It has all the equipment and care facilities needed for a modern day care home but they are all kept out of sight. What are on view are the Laura Ashley curtains, the Axminster carpets and the carefully sourced antiques from around the world. “We took the old house back to its bare-bones, revealing wonderful old beams and features, then with modern safety devices and fire-retardants we have been able to keep the original features like curved walls and wide, misshapen doors.” continued Stephen. “We have Gold Standard fire safety, five-star rating for food hygiene and every thing we do, we try to do to the very best standard.” Blackbrook House has permanent residents, those wanting just a short break or holiday, and also respite care visitors. “This is a perfect place for those elderly people who have no one and life becomes lonely, sometimes your own home can be the loneliest of places, but when they come here for a few days, they come into a family home with new friends.” Stephen used to help out in his parents care home when he was just sixteen so he has a lifetime of giving care and has trained as a qualified nurse. “This is not just about running a business; it is about caring about what we do here and the people who are in our care. It is a great place to run and be involved in. It is about the quality of life for our residents when they are here; this isn’t a lonely place, although everyone has their

Spring| makeover
Spring is in the air... whoop, whoop.
As the dark winter months draw to a close, and light and warmth enter our lives once again, we can throw back the curtains, gaze out onto our bedraggled gardens and contemplate having a good old sort out.
A
t this time of year there is so much that needs sorting. As I view my chipped paintwork, the grubby fingerprints on the walls, the cobwebs behind the sideboard, the new shelves that need to be put up, the garden boarders that I have been dreaming about all winter, the vegetable patch that needs digging over and planting, and the lawn which, quite frankly, appears to be beyond repair, the urge to roll up my sleeves and get on with it vies with the inclination to make a nice cup of tea, put my feet up and pretend spring hasn’t arrived. To be honest, with a list this long I’ll be here until next spring getting it all done. Experience has taught me that my planning and time management skills are sadly lacking. So whilst I may think that I can spring clean my house in one day, the reality is that I really need to allow a day a room, which means either taking seven days off work or cleaning every Sunday

for seven weeks, by which time it will be summer (or so I am told) and the lure of the sun lounger will be far too strong to ignore. Replanting the borders will require many hours of browsing catalogues, visiting garden centres and considering the merits of honeysuckle over clematis before I even lift a spade, and I can get so lost in the placing of my runner beans and potting up my tomato plants that my children can go unfed for days. Even more worrying is the decorating. In my head I can repaint a room in a day, two at a push. A quick sanding down, emulsion in the morning, gloss in the afternoon and I can have my feet up with the crossword in the evening. But my recent attempt at a bit of painting disproved that theory when, as a Christmas present my daughter asked if she could have her room redecorated. This seemed like a reasonable request so her wish was granted... although Father Christmas had to wait a couple of
paint matt emulsion on top of vinyl silk emulsion because they don’t like each other and you will get lots of cracks! As I faced the fact that I would have to sand it all down and repaint the areas I had already done with an oil based primer before I could proceed with the top coat, it dawned on me that it could be weeks before I finished and the thought “Why didn’t I get in some-one who knows what they are doing?” did more than float through my mind. So I have decided that I will have three lists this spring. One will contain the jobs that can wait until next spring, the second much, much shorter one will contain the jobs I will do. The third will contain the jobs that I will pay someone else to do, whilst I sit with my feet up and marvel at how they can do them so much faster than I.

01264 782029 07789 550662 Spring may be late this year, but it is finally on its way. While it can be easy to overlook a neglected garden in the winter, the warmer weather gives many of us the incentive to tackle those unloved areas. We recently redesigned and landscaped an overgrown Winchester garden to give it a new lease of life: “What a remarkable makeover from a messy and overgrown eyesore to a well-designed and landscaped garden. I always dreaded the sight of the garden from my window, but now cannot wait for the summer to entertain al fresco. The work was carried out by a friendly, knowledgeable, reliable & enthusiastic team. Charlie has managed to combine a design that incorporated my requirements of low maintenance, all-year-roundinterest, practical items such as a shed and log-store, an additional car parking area and a BBQ area. A spectacular transformation, I will be enjoying it for many years to come!” Jane Carlyle-Scott, Winchester. months until he had recovered from all the festivities of the season before delegating an elf, a.k.a. me to pick up a paint brush. We duly transferred the contents of her room around the house, put dust sheets over what couldn’t be moved and went out and purchased the paint. Five years ago, when I bought and decorated the house Ellie was going through her Deep Blue Period, and as we were repainting the walls pale violet I decided it would be wise to slap a coat of cheap white silk emulsion on first. This was a quick and easy job, and the following afternoon I did all the cutting in and one wall with the violet before calling it a night. As I closed the bedroom door I took a moment to reflect rather smugly on the fact that here was I, a single mother, juggling two children, a business, writing articles such as this and all the other demands life throws at me, and I was also doing the decorating. I have to admit that, as I immersed myself in a very deep bath, the thought “Who needs a professional?” briefly floated through my mind. The following morning I went to inspect my work prior to loading up the roller to fill in the walls. To my horror the one violet wall and the cut in areas had morphed into what appeared to be dried up river beds, albeit in a lovely shade of violet. Tiny cracks were everywhere! One minor breakdown, some hours spent on research and a couple of phone calls later I discovered the one decorating tip that no one had ever thought to tell me. You cannot

How clean is your Tile?
NATURAL Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and worth every penny of your investment! But what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’. Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up. Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid. Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor now? It can be surprising how even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts soil which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again. The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever!! And what if the grout is that badly stained? No problem! They can even re-colour the grout for you, from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional application of an impregnating sealer, which does what it says. It impregnates the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay… which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom. So why not let the Tile Doctor clean and protect for you. Call now on 0800 695 6959 or visit www.hampshiretiledoctor.co.uk, for a free ‘demo’! 72…

Events in April TUESDAY 2ND APRIL 2013 Easter Story Walk
Swanwick in April Words by Jess Daish-Miller Images by Darin Smith
April at Swanwick Lakes is all about new growth and rebirth. From the amphibians in the ponds to the flowers in the woods, everything is changing this month.
Among the flowers, one of the strangest must be ‘Lords and Ladies’. The waxy, white petals surround a yellow rod which actually heats up and gives off a strong odour. This attracts insects, which then become trapped in the base of the flower. When the plant releases the insects, they are well coated with pollen which they carry with them to the next flower. Bluebells begin to flower towards the end of April. The blue haze of delicately scented bulbs that can be found in our woodlands is a splendid sight- there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world! Much of our winter work in the woodlands at Swanwick Lakes has involved creating clearings to increase the amount of light getting to the woodland floor so that we can hopefully encourage our small areas of bluebells to spread. Over the past few years, we have seen them steadily conquer new areas of the wood. Insect life becomes more obvious this month. On sunny days, watch out for butterflies. The orange tip, bright yellow
brimstone and red admiral butterflies are regularly seen at Swanwick Lakes during April. Many red admiral butterflies have spent the winter hibernating in the leaf litter. April is a month truly bursting with activity at Swanwick Lakes! Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve is an 86 acre reserve located on Sopwith Way, off Swanwick Lane. The reserve is owned by NATS and managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The reserve is open from dawn until dusk for all to enjoy. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust works to protect wildlife and inspire people in Hampshire and the Island. Find out more at www.hwt.org.uk

April Gardening It’s spring at last and the gardening season is underway. If winter snowfall has taken its toll, cheer up your garden up by planting a flowering shrub or two. Supplied by Paul Gibbons, Garsons Garden Centre www.garsons.co.uk Flowering cherries will be coming into blossom during early April and you can even grow one in a small garden. Choose from upright or spreading trees, standards or shrubs. Prunus Amanogawa is commonly called the flagpole cherry because of its upright growth. It’s great for a tight spot and has fantastic large double flowers. For a patio you could try Prunus Kojo-no-mai, a compact shrub with pretty pink flowers. For a bigger space, you can’t beat Prunus Pink Perfection for impact. I love its abundance of double pink flowers each spring. The blossom is followed with bronze-coloured leaves which turn dark green. The RHS has given it the prestigious Award of Garden Merit. Cherry trees are best planted in moist but welldrained soil in a sunny position. Lavenders are timeless favourites. They’re low maintenance, aromatic, give lovely colour and bees love them. If you’re going for an English variety, Lavender Hidcote does well in our climate and remains compact. Hidcote is a bushy dwarf evergreen shrub with small deep violet-purple flowers. It’s not as heat or drought tolerant as other lavenders. Munstead is another good English variety of lavender, named after Munstead Woods, the home of garden designer Gertrude Jekyll. Munstead is bigger than Hidcote lavender and tolerates summer heat the best of all English lavenders. French lavender tends to be large and fast-growing. There’s quite a variety in colour, fragrance and flower heads. It does best when kept under three feet high, including the blooms. Give it a good prune four or five weeks into the bloom cycle, which discourages larger varieties from getting untidy and encourages a second set of flowers. Last in our hat-trick of spring plants is the clematis. There’s one for every colour scheme and they don’t take up much room. Whether you train it to climb over a pergola or trellis, or through a tree, here’s how to get the best results: Choose a variety that suits your needs. Vigorous varieties will get out of hand in a container or engulf a slow-growing shrub, but are ideal to climb up a wall. To grow a clematis up a tree or shrub, decide whether you want it to flower at a different time to the host, extending the interest, or to bloom at the same time for maximum flower power.
• •
How to plant Dig a planting hole 45cm (18in) away from your trellis, fence, wall or host plant. Make the hole twice the diameter of the container and deep enough so the top of the rootball sits 5cm beneath the level of the soil. Loosen the soil at the base with a garden fork. Soak the plant well. Put the clematis at the centre of the hole and fill around the rootball with soil. Firm soil with your heel and water well. Add a thick layer of mulch as the roots don’t like to be exposed to the sun. Keep it well watered during the first season. As always, keep on top of weeding. It’s easy to pull up a few weeds here and there when you’re out enjoying your garden as it bursts into life.

Until next month,
happy gardening!

Great Expectations from our Young Actors After last year’s sell-out production of ‘The Voyage Of Lost Dreams’, Southampton’s Nuffield Theatre is now looking for the company for Hampshire Youth Theatre 2013 to build on the success of many previous shows. This year the company will be returning to tackle one of Charles Dickens’ classic stories, Great Expectations. Hampshire Youth Theatre (HYT) is a prestigious yearly project for young people aged 14-21 and the Nuffield is looking for the most talented and committed young people in Hampshire to join them over the summer to take part in rehearsing and performing a play which will be performed on the theatre’s main stage. Around 60 performers will work closely and intensely with the professional staff at the Nuffield, throughout the three week period, to get a mature and exciting immersion into the theatre industry. Over the course of the production, participants will learn industry techniques, rehearse as trained actors would and produce a show that is of a high professional standard. The project needs versatile and confident individuals who can demonstrate their potential just as much as talent. No previous experience is necessary to join the company, just lots of enthusiasm and energy. The Hampshire Youth Theatre company requires actors willing to play a variety of ensemble roles; musicians who play instruments to a high grade, alongside those who have an interest in composing and song-writing. It is not all about the youngsters out on the stage though as there are also places for technicians interested in design, construction, lighting, sound and stage management. The Nuffield’s Creative Learning Associate, Max Lindsay, who will direct HYT, told Solent Life, “Hampshire Youth Theatre is a fantastic way for young people from across the county to connect with theatre at a professional level. The Nuffield has

a strong ethos of developing the next generation of theatre makers and HYT is one of the biggest projects for doing that. It provides opportunities for anyone who is interested in making theatre to gain invaluable experience and work with professional practitioners on a full scale production. The project encourages those involved to push themselves, with the training and experience gained being of added value when applying to universities and drama schools. But it’s important to remember that it’s also a chance to have fun and explore new things. Working on a big ensemble piece like Great Expectations, gives a lot of scope for people with little or no experience to be involved and it’s a brilliant time to meet people and make friends.” Auditions are taking place at schools, colleges and theatre studios across the county for this year’s summer project, ‘Great Expectations’ - Some auditions have already taken place but those still to be held are: 17th April – Bitterne pArk School – 4-6pm 22nd April – teStBourne community School – 4-6pm 24th April – ForeSt Forge, ringwood – 8-9.30pm 29th April – SouthdownS college, wAterlooville – 5-7pm The Nuffield Theatre, University Road, Southampton, SO17 1TR Tel: 023 8031 5500 www.nuffieldtheatre.co.uk To apply to be part of Hampshire Youth Theatre, pick up a leaflet from your nearest audition venue or visit the Nuffield’s website, where you can download an application form. For more information about HYT 2013, please contact Max Lindsay (max.lindsay@ nuffieldtheatre.co.uk).

Marti Pellow knows a lot about bringing great songs to audiences, with his band Wet Wet Wet Marti’s been rewarded with multiple number one albums, record breaking stadium and arena tours as well as several number one singles, a solo career where he’s been able to explore all the musical influences that have shaped his success, and have brought him accolades from Brit awards to Ivor Novellos.

Q: Were you expecting to make the leap to musicals? Marti: I was a singer in a pop band and Pete
Q: Is there a ny cha nce of getting ba ck together

Marti: I would love to do some more time with
His last solo album, Love To Love, was one of the biggest of his solo career and one of the best selling independent records of 2011. His touring schedule is monumental, which apart from his starring roles in theatre productions have most recently seen him sharing arena stages with Liam Neeson and Ricky Wilson in the UK and European tour of The War of The Worlds. Now having had the privilege to work with some of the greatest in shows like The Witches of Eastwick, Chess, Jekyll & Hyde, Chicago and Blood Brothers. Marti’s latest project is a new album titled ‘Hope’ a collection of the Broadway and West End theatre songs that have touched and inspired him. Marti Pellow popped into ‘The Evening Breeze’ to catch up with show host Damien St John.
Q: Your latest albu m is a set of well-known
songs that map your musical journey to the West End and Broadway. Can you remember when you first fell in love with musical theatre?
Marti: I was singing a duet at the
Royal Albert Hall with Ruthie Henshall who was in Chicago at the time and a couple of American producers who ca me to see her later offered me the part of Billy F lynn so that was the start of it and that’s when I kind of switched on to it. The whole Kander and Ebb thing was my first introduction to musical theatre which I fell in love with.
the guys but it’s finding enough time to give a project the respect it justly deserves. It would be nice for people to see where we were at as songwriters as we enter into another chapter of our careers and to hang out with my mates.
Q: Have you ever sung karaoke on holiday? Marti: I’ve sung in a few bars in my time, it
doesn’t have to be underneath a karaoke u mbrella for me to get up and sing a song, it’s what I do, it’s my vocation, it’s like asking a chef to go and cook a meal in your kitchen – That’s what I do in life.
Q: What keeps you smiling? Marti: A love and passion for what I do. To be
able to have a career where I can earn a coin and travel the world on a song is brilliant – a real job would kill me.
Q: You’ve just turned 48. What advice can you give
people to prepare them for life in their 40s?
Marti:
Always floss. Look after your teeth in your forties and they’ ll see you through into your fifties.
Q: You’ve been touring your new albu m around the
UK. Do you enjoy performing live?
Marti: Very much so. I spend a lot of time on
the road and I enjoy the live environment, that’s where it makes sense to me, sitting in front of a piano and with the crowd singing songs and enjoying what I do.
