AUGUST 2013

What a month this has been. I am very pleased to announce that The Informer magazine has joined the Solent Life family of magazines. The Informer will continue to be produced and will be the same magazine from the same team; it will have the same distribution and we will keep the same look and feel and retain all that has gained a loyal following over the past 23 years. Adding The Informer to our portfolio brings the perfect local community magazine to compliment Solent Life in its role as the regional lifestyle magazine. Please note that any rumours or announcement suggesting that The Informer has closed down is entirely untrue. Other than our excitement with that, what a glorious few weeks we have had, a proper English summer with hot balmy days and bright sunshine and long may it last! Andy Murray won Wimbledon, and another Englishman has won the Tour de France with Chris Froome, and as I write this, not only is England two up in the Ashes series but our Brit Lewis Hamilton has won the Hungarian Grand Prix as well. There is so much going on; it’s difficult to keep up with it all, with more to come in August with Cowes week and the build up to the boat show. Have a great month and hope the sun shines on the school holidays. | MANAGING EDITOR

& Dockyards There are serious artists and, shall we say; the not so serious and Gosport artist Colin M Baxter falls into both categories; “I need the ‘M’ in the middle of my name as when people search for me I get mixed up with a Scottish photographer with the same name”.

S

olent Life sent David Rose-Massom down to his charming studio and gallery to discover how the two sides of Colin’s work gelled. “I have been a marine artist for some thirty years now mostly producing fine-art pieces but it is fun to diversify now and again and do something different,” Colin explained as we sat in his studio surrounded, not only by his work, but by pottery, wood craft, pictures and nick-knacks from other artists and friends. In fact, this collection of art almost fills the studio that was once a wheelwrights workshop in days gone by when the marina was a victualling yard for the Royal Navy. Solent Life featured Colin and his traditional fine-art pieces a few years ago but at a recent exhibition of his work we noticed his ‘eye’ had changed as had the style with much of his work. “I produce driftwood carvings, picking up my raw material from the nearby seashore and always have piles of wood drying in my studio. Beginning with a rough sketch I then find a piece of wood that best conveys the image I see in my mind’s eye; occasionally it works the other way round when I see something in the piece of wood to inspire me. “A good example is the wooden block from an old carpenter’s plane that I found recently, put a mast on it and some sails, a couple of seagulls flying around it and it becomes a piece which I shall call ‘Plane Sailing’; I love puns in art. “Not everyone however wants that shabby chic of a caricature carving in their home, they just don’t want something threedimensional and so those initial sketches become pen-and-wash paintings.” Colin explained that pen-and-wash is produced by drawing the outlines in waterproof ink and then going over that with a watercolour wash. “It is nice to diversify because it stretches both my mind and my technique; it is nice to do something different. The thing is that each piece of work still has 30 years of experience going into it and the same amount of care that I take over the more traditional work. 8…

DID YOU KNOW? This month we take a look at Roy Lichtenstein. Born in 1923 in New York, he studied art at Ohio and became famous for his artwork which mimicked comic books. Among his many thoughts and quotes, we found these: “I don’t have big anxieties. I wish I did. I’d be much more interesting.” “Pop Art looks out into the world. It doesn’t look like a painting of something; it looks like the thing itself.” “I like to pretend that my art has nothing to do with me.” “Art doesn’t transform. It just plain forms.” “But usually I begin things through a drawing, so a lot of things are worked out in the drawing. But even then, I still allow for and want to make changes.” “I think that most people think painters are kind of ridiculous, you know?”

It may be the caricature of a quayside scene or a lighthouse but it still has to have the right proportions and the right perspective; there still has to be an accuracy to the image so that people can recognise it and believe in the scene.” As well as his driftwood, Colin is used to working with unusual background materials; much of his traditional fine art is painted using old sea charts as his canvas. “I like the fact that much of my work has an historic content, which is why the charts make such a good canvas, but I also use another unique background for some of my cameo work. These are ships painted on a three inch or so square background but that material is the copper plate that has been removed during renovations of HMS Victory across the water in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard and they do come with certificates of authenticity. “It is an enjoyable diversion producing this more contemporary work but I am still painting and still a model maker and an artist that needs to know about construction and the level of painting and the intensity still has to be put into the work, no matter the subject, as it would not be fair to my customers or those people who get pleasure from seeing my work.”

“But when I worked on a painting I would do it from a drawing but I would put certain things I was fairly sure I wanted in the painting, and then collage on the painting with printed dots or painted paper or something before I really committed it.” “I kind of do the drawing with the painting in mind, but it’s very hard to guess at a size or a colour and all the colours around it and what it will really look like.”

Colin’s studio is open most weekdays; if the wooden seagull carving is sitting outside the door then Colin is inside working. COLIN M BAXTER, Driftwood Studios, Unit 2a North Meadow, Royal Clarence Yard, Gosport PO12 1BP www.colinmbaxter.co.uk

Harbour When the Solent Life team suggested giving this August issue a waterfront theme it produced a bit of a quandary; which amazing waterside walk to include, the Test Way, the Itchen River, the Hamble or any one of a dozen wonderful seafront walks.

I

t did not take long to decide on a walk that offered stunning views across a harbour, the chance of seeing cormorants, water voles, raptors and even the slim chance of a seal sighting – it had to be Emsworth! Sitting like a sparkling gem on the border of Hampshire and West Sussex, this quaint seaside village offers a magical starting point for two or three short walks or one very long and tiring adventure which takes in seascapes across Chichester Harbour, a couple of mill ponds, a nature reserve or two, the odd marina and more wildlife than you can shake a stick at! Parking in the middle of Emsworth there are plenty of options for breakfast, to give you the strength to take on the walks, and arriving at a little after sunrise will give you a gorgeous misty start to the day with boats resting on the muddy shore awaiting the return of the sea to give them life. Down the shallow hill to the quay, past pretty little pastel coloured cottages and onto the curving promenade that makes visitors think of romantic novels; the hero and his one true love standing on the raised walkway awaiting the boat to take them away to a new life while gulls swirl overhead and swans glide close to the wall in the hope of food. Along Western Parade and down toward the woodland at the end of Beach Road, this is a charming little wooded area on the edge of the harbour where you will often see wrens, great spotted woodpeckers and all varieties of other birdlife; as well as several squirrels. The path loops around the woods and returns you back to the Promenade and up into the town before

14‌

heading east and to Hermitage Bridge which separates the Mill Pond and the small nature reserve with its pond on the other side of the main road. The Mill Pond alongside Slipper Lane is a spot where you will often see cormorants dipping below the surface of the water in the hunt for fish or standing on one of the small islands with wings spread wide and drying themselves in the morning sun.

The footpath leads into a neat little marina where the pontoons sit protected and hidden between trees and grassy promontories where once again birdlife is rife and egrets can be found searching the shallows for crustaceans or roosting in the branches of the nearby trees. In the marina is The Deck, a lovely café that serves good food and has a balcony overlooking the yachts and motorboats safely resting in their watery haven. Cubed accommodation, like houses designed by Lego, sit upon solid legs; waterside residences that look as if they are perfect for a weekend break or even a small home. The footpath continues along the western edge of Thorney Island; on one side, the harbour with views across to Emsworth and on the other, inland lakes and the canal-like waterways of another nature reserve. As I walked, splashing in the shallows drew my attention to a huge fish, belly against the mud and back above the water’s surface as if he was sunbathing. A short way on, I stopped my walk and returned to the village as I did not have time to go through the gate that marks the start of the military base on Thorney; but if you have time, take the path through the base and following the rules as posted on the gate to stay on the footpath, enjoy even better scenery and the circular route around the whole island.

the | walk

On previous walks I have enjoyed the magnificent views and watched seals as they sunbathe on the mud flats; stood on the edge of Thornham Marina, which seems to be filled with classic old sailing craft and inhabited by thousands of swallows that dip and dive on every breath of wind and offer sharp flying silhouettes against the rich blue sky of a summer day. There is also a small café in the marina which offers a welcome break and whilst there, check out the three artistically painted massive blue whales, that sit at the marina entrance. As I crossed a solid, grey coloured wooden bridge that traverses one of the inlets I spotted a common seal, a youngish pup with a glossy almost gold pelt, he sat on the sandy shore, his back curved as if in ecstasy of the warming sun and looking like a strange rocking horse with his head and tail flippers held high and the curve of his chubby belly resting on the mud, all that was missing was a child rider to rock him back and forth. It is about a three hour hike to circumnavigate Thorney Island, so the whole walk could take some five hours; but it is well worth every tiring step if you can manage the whole route. If not pick out a couple of days and do the Emsworth/Thorney Island trek in parts; the seascapes and landscapes alone are worth the effort but add to that the joy of the bird life you will see and the chance to just stop and watch a seal enjoying a quiet moment or two at low tide make this a walk to remember for a very long time!

Three Roberts It is never easy to run a successful business; and in recent years many family businesses have either gone under or been bought out by bigger companies, but on Southampton’s waterfront, one family business, now being run by the third-generation of Robert, is bucking the trend and in July Kemps Shipyard Ltd celebrated 100 years of being in business.

S

olent Life Senior Journalist, David Rose-Massom, visited the latest Kemp incumbent, Robert ‘Minor’ at their boatyard on the River Itchen to discover how it all began with his grandfather Robert Kemp Senior. “Robert Kemp Senior was born in 1880 on the Island of Guernsey, Orkney and as there was no school on the island, he had to sail to school each day to the mainland to get his education. Obviously, being late for school taught him how to sail a boat fast which set the course for years to come. “He trained as a Yacht Master and Engineer later becoming a Naval Architect before realising all the work for his occupation would be in the south and with Southampton being a major port then as it is now, it was the obvious choice. He became a successful skipper but soon realised he would be better off in his own business and so it was he started Kemps Shipyard Limited as a Yacht Brokers based above a shop at the lower end of Southampton High Street and near the port. It was then his time at sailing himself to school and back and his experience and intuition learned as a child helming yachts fast, that would eventually lead him to helming many of the J Class yachts including the King’s own yacht Britannia and Thomas Lipton’s yacht ‘Shamrock’. “He soon opened his own yard in Hythe which carried out building and repairing yachts and made a great deal of money converting ex-naval craft from the First World War into private luxury motor boats. Then in 1916 his son Robert Jnr was born. A few years on and Robert Jnr was working in engineering in the Midlands at Knife Batteries when the Second World War broke out. Having lost part of his right arm in an accident as a child it meant he could not enlist but instead his war effort ended up being in charge of Motor Torpedo production at Poole. “At the end of the war Robert Jnr decided to stay in the south, having met and married a local girl, Joyce; and now with his newly earned boat production skills, it was a logical move to join his father’s business and he was to take that business forward and onto new heights.

20…

.co.uk • AUGUST 2013

“Other companies were started to operate alongside Robert Senior’s original set-up and new premises were bought at Bitterne Manor in Southampton to accommodate them. Kempsafe Limited, producers of specialist marine galley and laundry equipment; that recently supplied the two new aircraft carriers built for the navy, and also launched were Athey and Kemp, engineers; Kemp Masts and more… Robert Jnr. realised that a then new material, fibreglass, would be perfect for the mass production of boats and so it was that he exhibited the very first fibreglass boat at the London Boat Show held at Olympia in 1959. Under the banner of Glascade GRP he built his own range of craft under the name of Senior Marine and moulded craft for others, then young companies, such as Princess Yachts and Sunseeker. In the 1970’s the yard was the second largest producer of GRP craft in the UK.” In 1952 the newest Robert was born, Robert Kemp Minor, the latest generation and current MD, was born in Southampton and he attended school at St Mary’s College (he went by bus rather than dinghy) and after University he learned his trade working for a large engineering conglomerate, Rubery Owen, in the Midlands. “It was as a consequence of a power boating accident in the 1978 Cowes-Torquay, in which my father was seriously injured, that caused me to leave the Midlands to help in the family business; and I am still running it today. In the years from 1978 much has changed in the marine industry especially with oil prices putting the price of resin through the roof; and the government then putting 20% VAT on all leisure craft. Senior Marine gradually wound down and Glascade turned its attention to commercial fibreglass products used mainly in the construction industry and when this became very successful my father sold the company as a going concern; he then also sold Kemps Masts. The money was reinvested in the Kemps Shipyard site where major reclamation work and a quay wall were built.

TIMELINE Kemps Shipyard Limited – Established 20th July 1913 1912 – Ferry Yard – Woolston (became the Supermarine Aviation Works) 1915 – Bought Emsworth Shipyard 1916 – MRINA – Member Royal Institute of Naval Architects Thomas Liptons ‘Shamrock’ 1922 – Hythe Shipyard

business | profile

“It was up to me, Robert Minor, to set about enlarging and improving the marina and facilities; it was my turn to put a mark on the family business. Kemps Shipyard Ltd as a company had been ticking along as part of the group mainly dealing in brokerage of new and second-hand yachts, small repairs on a slipway and a small amount of berthing. The large boat building sheds were subdivided and let out as small industrial units and the site was then re-christened Kemps Quay. “Today, the Shipyard manages the industrial units and runs the marina which has around 250 berths. Unfortunately a large number of these are tidal as English Nature decided to make the east bank of the River Itchen a nature reserve which includes our own Kemps Quay so dredging is not permitted. What this does mean however is that Kemps can provide reasonably priced berths which appeal to the mass market. The facilities offered are lift outs, scrub offs and storage ashore and of course visitors are always welcome. “It is a very proud thing to continue what my grandfather began a century ago and as a family and business we are delighted that we have reached 100 years of age and still remaining in the same family ownership. We have been active in providing employment and services to the Southampton community and we look forward to the next century…cough!” Solent Life would like to congratulate all involved with the Kemp family business and offer them our best wishes in reaching their centenary; we would also like to thank Robert Kemp Minor for taking time to tell us the family story… 1928 – Sold Hythe to Hubert Scott Paine 1930 – Acquired Bridge Yard Woolston Office on High Street Bridge Yard – acquisitioned by Council for Corporation Bus and Floating Bridge Terminus – then bought Bitterne Manor 1952. Bitterne Manor slipway handled vessels up to 200 tons! Kemps Shipyard bought every Floating Bridge that the Council renewed and for many years one was the ‘Services’ vessel for the marina; complete with offices and a bar.

HAVE A

GO At the Romsey Show It is without doubt one of the highlights of late summer, The Romsey Show. This is a true agricultural show, a showcase for many local businesses and great day out with something for all the family; especially this year where the theme will be ‘having-a-go’. Held in glorious open parkland and with the stunning backdrop of the home of the late Lord Louis Mountbatten, Broadlands, this one day show is one of the oldest in England and has been held since 1842. It showcases the very best of British farming; it is a vital part of the County’s social calendar with livestock from across the region arriving to compete for the best and prettiest and with hundreds of horses entered in a huge number of equine events that range from show jumping and heavy horses to side saddle and even best donkey. Solent Life visited the Show Society offices, which are also situated in the beautiful parkland of Broadlands, and organisers told us. “This year’s theme is all about having a go and getting involved, and in particular with young people; such as the Mounted Games of Great Britain which has events such as egg and spoon races that as well as being fun teach good horse riding skills to youngsters,” they explained. “Or they may prefer to get involved with My Chocolate Gallery, a Romsey truffle maker, (and our first port of call); or the Master Baker who will be demonstrating how to decorate a cake before letting visitors have a go themselves.

“With eating in mind the Food Zone has grown incredibly over recent years and now includes a demonstration kitchen with local chefs showing off their skills as well as some 75 to 80 food stalls which will have everything from local made jams and chutneys to locally reared buffalo. Barfoots will be there with their sweetcorn stand and their produce is grown on the Broadlands’ Estate and you cannot get more local or fresher than that.” The Romsey Show may be about local businesses, farmers and producers but as a show day it is all about family and to that end, show organisers have structured the ticket prices to attract more families and also more young people. “Two children under the age of eleven with an adult will be able to come in for free (meaning two adults and four children under eleven can get into the show for just £25), and the 11 to 18 year olds can buy Young Adult tickets, it has always been a fabulous family day out. Last year we had close to 24,000 visitors enjoying a really sunny day of fun and excitement. “Apart from the events and attractions in the main ring and around the showground there are some 500 trade stands, and remember even the car companies are local businesses too. Not forgetting the, horticultural displays and local handmade crafts and that is without the added fun of a petting area with animals; the goats are always popular with the little ones - and there will be close to one thousand horses, 100 sheep and 200 cattle. “There is rock climbing for all ages to enjoy and get involved with; and even Richard Austin who will be showing how he produces wooden sculptures with a chain saw. There really is something for everyone, and even more so we think this year. With so much going on around the showground there are plenty of subjects for youngsters to capture on their cameras as local photo shop – Photo Flair- are sponsoring a photographic competition this year.

Application forms and details are on the website and in the show guide. The Romsey Show opens nice and early and runs from eight in the morning till six in the evening. There is always something going on, something of interest happening and as organisers explained; “We often forget what is on our doorstep and the Romsey Show, as well as a great family day out and adventure, is the place where annually those local producers, businesses and farmers can show off to the public what they do and how they do it – and this year we can all join in as well!” www.romseyshow.co.uk The Romsey Show, Broadlands on Saturday the 14th of September

In another part of this month’s Solent Life we help a local family concern celebrate 100 years of being in business, on these following pages we join a 21 year old entrepreneur and pastry chef who is just embarking on her first venture – and she is doing it with a real passion…

Sweet Delights A

lex Bishop is a young woman who belies her age with a wise and sensible head; and with an intense passion and a singleminded desire to achieve her ambitions and dreams. “My GreatGrandmother was apparently a great pastry cook and so it must be in the genes. I am told there were always tins and tins full of cream cakes and tarts; it is just a little sad that I never got to meet her and talk to her about cooking and her passion for pastry!” Alex may be young but she is already experienced in her chosen profession and has many mentors that have helped shape her. “My dad is in business and he started with nothing, at about the same time as my mum announced I was on the way dad felt he had to make a go of working for himself. He has always made sure that I did things properly and that I used my own initiative; but I know he will always be there for advice when I need it,” continued Alex. “At school my Home Economics teacher was a great influence and she mentored me a great deal. I knew from then I did not want just a job, whatever I did with my life and career it had to be a passion!

32…

.co.uk • AUGUST 2013

“On leaving school there was a pressure to go to university but I knew what I wanted to do and headed for catering college; first Highbury and then Southdowns College, I had to put my foot down because this was what I truly wanted. It should have been a three-year course, but because I had already been cooking for many years the lecturers thought the first year would be wasted and so I went straight onto the second phase of the course and even then I found a great deal of it easy, it always does seem easier when you are doing something you are passionate about!” When Alex felt she needed some work experience in a ‘real’ kitchen she decided that half-measures were not good enough for her. “I went to the Michelin starred L’Ortolan restaurant, owned and run by Alan Murchison and asked if I could work for free. Within a week Alan; one the country’s top chefs, asked me if I wanted to join them. Then the pastry chef went on a week’s holiday and I was left running the section on my own; I only worked there for a short time but in that time I ended up running the pastry section of a Michelin starred restaurant; it was an amazing experience!”

business | profile

“I started cooking jam tarts with my Grandma when I was just four and I recall having one ball of pastry left over so I just threw it at the window; but that memory made me realise that pastry cooking was fun.”

AUGUST 2013 •

.co.uk …33

business | profile We asked if memory played a big part in putting dishes together. “I have a lousy memory and the only way to learn complex dishes, and they were complex at L’Ortolan, is to practice and keep practicing them; you only learn from practice. “Many pastry cooks produce cakes that just look nice, but there are no surprises and they often lack taste or texture. There are cake makers and there are patissieres. To make a cake is relatively simple but to make a good pastry, to make something special, that is a delight to do, and a delight for people when they tuck in. “I rarely follow recipes; I always want to add my own touch, that something extra, something special. My plan for the next six

months is to establish the business and work full-time on my own cakes and pastries, to be self employed and become self-sufficient. Later perhaps, I want to open a coffee, come tea shop but, as with my cakes, it will have a difference, a twist and will have a surprise or two. Of course I want people to travel from afar just for my produce, for my cakes and confections; I want to be known as a quality cake maker; quality is everything and always will be.” So what drives a 21 year old to have such ambition? “I just love to do it, I love to see people smiling as they eat my pastries and cakes. I want to show people that delicious delicacies are not a lost art, not something just done by Great Grandmothers and I want to surprise people, in a nice way, with my creations.”

Beauty

A short distance along the coast from the Solent Life offices is one of our favourite day-out destinations, the stunning West Sussex market town of Arundel. It is a charming town that sits on the banks of the broad, fast-running waters of the River Arun and standing proudly on the hill overlooking the area is Arundel Castle. Within a short walking distance of the ancient building is the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, a stunning 65 acre reserve of lakes, wildlife and water birds.

arundel | castle

s the road into the town turns its back on the busy A27, it climbs between pretty houses, with the grey-walled castle as a backdrop, and visitors enter another world, a world where the pace of life changes, nobody rushes around Arundel just in case they miss something special. All the while like a benevolent big brother the castle looks down upon the little town. A narrow moat, busy with ducks and swans, runs past the castle and the castellated entrance, usually brightened by colourful flower beds. The gateway opens onto a pathway that curves up the hill to the gardens and castle. Arundel Castle is the seat of The Dukes of Norfolk; I have never figured out why that seat is not in Norfolk, and the magnificent edifice is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens that have played host to visitors for almost two centuries. As would be expected of such a famous castle, the inside is filled with a classic art collection, tapestries, suits of armour and a 1000 years of history after being built at the end of the 11th century by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Arundel. In the grounds surrounding the massive fortress are the gardens which are beautiful, formal and peaceful and when visitors have had enough of the easy life they can then climb the steps to take in the views from the turrets that scan across the vast greenery of West Sussex and follows the meandering path of the River Arun; this climb is tiring but worth every narrow and tricky step to the heights that boast this superb landscape as reward for the effort. Part of that epic scenery is the Wetlands Trust, an amazing haven of wildlife fed by the waters of the Arun and part of the group of nine Wetland reserves dotted across the country and begun by naturalist Sir Peter Scott. The beauty of the Wetland Trust is that the whole family can view and enjoy the wildlife close at hand, feed the wildfowl and they will eat out of your hand and children can enjoy nature close-up. A visit to Arundel is not just about a journey to a lovely part of our south coast region; in the town there are quaint tea rooms, restaurants, plenty of antique shops and one of the finest independent bookshops you could hope to find, but then there is that towering castle that stands sentinel like on its hilltop, and even a pair of alpacas in the grounds, and a little way along the road one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries that can be found with its wide variety of birdlife and landscapes. There is an intimacy and charm about Arundel that few other towns can boast; and if you get tired of the attractions, then just sit and watch the river run by; it’s that sort of place!

www.wwt.org.uk/visit/arundel/ www.arundelcastle.org The Arundel Festival runs from 17th – 26th August and is a mixture of gallery trail, drama, music, family events, fireworks and even a bathtub race on the river. For a full programme and timings go to:

Not just a Guitar Store... The Guitar Store in Southampton captured everyone’s imagination back in 2008 when they opened a brand new store on Commercial road, with a shop front that faithfully replicated a Fender Guitar Amplifier, and then again in 2009 with a Marshall Acoustic Amp fronted Acoustic Guitar Store! Grabbing worldwide attention from Front page featuring on Flickr, StumbleUpon and Planet Rock radio, tens of thousands of people were soon sharing the incredible store fronts on social media sites. Not simply content with two stores, a brand new Drums & Percussion, Live Music and Pro Audio store has been opened right in the middle of the two, adding Acoustic & Electric Drums, Recording, Live Sound, Keyboards and an array of accessories for all musicians. This has turned this row of stores into the go-to hub for musicians and hobbyists. Stocking the biggest and best brands in the world, walls are adorned with hundreds of Gibson guitars, Fender Guitars, Martin and Taylor Acoustics, to name but a few. Add to that thousands of guitar pedals, hundreds of guitar amps, dozens of drum kits as well as enough accessories to keep you going for years, the Guitar Store, is not just a Guitar Store anymore.

FLOATS YOUR BOAT...

It seems there is no middle ground, it is either blazing and glorious sunshine, or deep leaden skies and pushing winds; but that has always been the way at Britain’s largest and most impressive on-water boat show…

T

o give it its full and official title; The PSP Southampton Boat Show is a spectacular display of all that involves the new and wonderful in the world of leisure boating. This popular annual event, now celebrating 45 years of exhibiting, is held every September and attracts visitors, exhibitors and investors from all over the world and is probably Southampton’s biggest single event taking over the waterfront part of the City for ten days, whilst people of all walks of life, and from around the globe, discover what the leisure marine industry in all its guises has to offer them.

Back in 2011 the Boat Show witnessed almost 50 World, European and UK product launches and played host to some 580 exhibitors while boat lovers, potential boat owners and just the inquisitive were able to climb aboard and explore over 1,000 boats and trial a selection of craft on Southampton water and the Solent.

46…

.co.uk • AUGUST 2013

for me it is an annual pilgrimage to a fascinating show that has always offered a day’s wonderful entertainment. Gleaming craft displayed at their very best, sleek vessels lining pontoons that jut out into Southampton Water and the pathways of Mayflower Park lined with super yachts, dinghies, speedboats and all the paraphernalia that goes with the world of boats and boating. Of course the tens of thousands of visitors also need to be fed, watered, entertained and amused. One stand last year even had a lounge pianist at a magnificent white grand-piano; it had nothing to do with boating but it was entertaining none the less. Temporary bars serve drinks to the thirsty, the Guinness Bar always the busiest and yet I doubt their nautical customers drink so much of the black stuff when away from this yearly feast of the floating world. Then there are the restaurants and catering areas; set up in the few days before the show opens and closed down at 6pm on the last day, it is hard to believe sometimes they are not permanent hostelries. The London Boat Show may be an important showcase for the boating industry but it will never have the atmosphere created at the Southampton show simply because of its being on the actual waterfront.

When it opens it will have Europe’s largest purposebuilt marina with over 2km of pontoons, the Show will get the pulses of boating enthusiasts racing with its numerous possibilities to actually get on the water, pick up new skills or refresh old ones, especially with this year’s signature attraction of Try-a-Boat which will get thousands of visitors out on the water for free. It is an ideal opportunity for the total novice to immerse themselves into the world of boating and experience the thrill of just getting out on the water for the first time. For the aspiring younger sailor they can also attempt to get their sea legs with On The Water’s Get Afloat, brought to the show by Rockley Watersports. Located in the marina, which lies at the very busy heart of the Show, eight to 16 year olds can pick up their first boating skills or improve on already acquired techniques with free 90 minute sessions. No experience is necessary, all equipment is provided and experts from Rockley Watersports will be on hand to ensure safety and fun are achieved in equal measure. It may well be that I will come away from this year’s boat show with some new item of clothing, a new pair of comfy deck shoes or just some nautical knick-knack, but most certainly, I will be coming away from this year’s Southampton Boat Show with a whole load of new memories of a fun day out down by the water, eating well, enjoying my only pint of Guinness of the year and just revelling in the sights, sounds and sheer size of the UK’s biggest on-water boat show. solent | harbour master

Master of all he surveys

As would be expected, the view from the Southampton Harbour Master’s office is a broad vista that is the ever changing seascape of Southampton Water. The day Solent Life visited Captain Martin Phipps’ Dock Head headquarters, the sea was flat calm and a heat haze gave it a misty impression. Editor Dave Hill called on the Harbour Master to discover what exactly he did and what ground, or waters, did he cover in his vital role. Inside his office are maritime pictures, two-way radios, waterproofs and a deep chest of chart drawers; every inch the Captain’s quarters; even though on land. “My prime concern is for marine safety within our port limits,” he began. “We are unique in that we have two areas of responsibility; the Statutory Area, which is the waters owned by ABP (Associated British Ports) which go back up as far as Ealing Creek and the Redbridge Causeway, as well as up the River Itchen as far as Woodmill. But, we are also a Competent Harbour Authority (CHA), which is all the pilotage to the east of the Solent and responsibility for any vessel over 20 metres and able to carry more than 12 passengers, as they must have a Pilot on board when in our waters; or the captains must have a Pilots licence. Any vessel over 61 metres though, must have one of our Pilots on board. Of course Portsmouth Harbour being Navy waters is controlled by the Queens Harbour Master; but there is a superb working relationship between all the Harbour Masters in the area. 52…

.co.uk • AUGUST 2013

“I was 20 years a Merchant Seaman and a ship’s Captain for seven years before becoming a Pilot. I have been a Pilot for 20 years and in that time I have brought them all into port from the Queens to tankers! This is a good port in which to be a Pilot because of that mixture of ships; one minute it will be the Queen Mary and next a little ‘sand-sucker’ going up to a tidal berth in the Itchen, we have to guide them all safely. “As a Vessel Traffic Service (VTS ) we control all shipping in the Solent and for a seven mile area past the Nab Tower. So, as you can see we are responsible for a huge area of water and for the safety on that water. I never worry about what we do as we are all well experienced, if I worried I would not do it! “Big ship wise we get the bookings from the shipping companies so we know what we are expecting and are well aware of what will be moving in the area; we do operate a one-way system here, so it is one ship in and one ship out at a time as the ‘S’ shaped channel between Cowes and Southampton Water is narrow and very difficult to manoeuvre for big vessels. That one short stretch of water is in just about every ship simulator around the world as it is so tricky. “We also have to work very much within the tidal windows, this is a 24 hour operation and so we have to be aware of how much water there is and if any given vessel has enough water.

solent | harbour master

“We have 40 Pilots in all, and all are Master Mariners, they operate in four pilot-boats, two working all the time and two standing by and I suppose we work very much on the same principle as Air Traffic Control. We also have a patrol vessel that operates around-the-clock and that will accompany the bigger ships through that ‘S’ bend. That becomes very necessary when you realise that from the bridge of a container ship the pilot cannot see anything in front for almost half a mile with line of sight over the deck load of containers; so the patrol vessel is vital for safety. “During events such as Cowes Week we of course get very much involved, there will always be a Pilot on the start line and he will inform the ship’s pilots that a start will take place at say 10.03, it is that exact for our timings. Although no two days are the same we do have a set pattern; the cruise ships arrive between four and eight in the morning, in time to get their passengers off and turn around before leaving between four and eight in the evening when we have another peak period. The car-carriers and container ships can move anytime. On an average day, if there is such a thing, we can handle anything from 15 to 40 big ships. “As many people know, Southampton water has a double tide which is helpful for us as it means on an average day it gives us 17 hours of rising tide and only seven hours of ebbing. “Although I work for ABP and that is a commercial operation, my main concern is the safety aspect and that is all important and in that regard I have authority over and above my employer. So with traffic movement and management, the buck really does stop here. Water safety and environmental pollution is all taken very seriously; especially when we have big events such as Cowes Week and everything goes well I have a particular pride in a job well done but we never get complacent. “It is not often that something goes wrong, although it does happen, but to safeguard against that training of all the Pilots is ongoing and the initial training takes six years; but then there will be another two years of experience before a Pilot even gets near a big container ship. All Pilots are Master Mariners and also have command experience. “I am a traffic manager, safety officer, event organiser and a whole raft of other jobs. I suppose I am a Jack-of-alltrades as well as being a yachtsman myself so I understand small boats as well as the big ones; and I suppose this is one of those jobs where I will always be learning my craft.”

Southampton Harbour Master Captain Martin Phipps was talking to Solent Life editor Dave Hill and we would like to thank him for his time.

HARBOUR

LIFE

Admiral Nelson stood on the ramparts and watched the fleet sail by as it left its confines; and in 1545 the pride of Henry VIII’s fleet the Mary Rose sank shortly after leaving its safe haven – maybe she should have been heading into Portsmouth Harbour and not away from it.

F

rom the choppy waters of the Solent and with a final few bumpy moments travellers and sailors enter the narrow channel that is the gateway into Portsmouth harbour and its safe moorings. Ferries to and from France, ferries to and from the Isle of Wight; pleasure craft both power and sail and the best of our own Royal Navy sail into Portsmouth for rest, repair and recreation. The earliest fortress built to protect the harbour from invaders is the furthest north in the watery haven, Porchester Castle which is Roman in origin. But, as seafarers enter the harbour and leave the garishness of the Southsea funfair behind they pass the Round Tower. For hundreds of years, Portsmouth’s importance as a naval base demanded that it was one of the most heavily defended cities in Europe and the Round Tower was part of its fortifications. Work on the Round Tower was begun in about 1418, and it was completed in the 1420s. History is a strange journey and eyes quickly ignore this curved grey stone structure and it is a more modern symbol that fills the frame of every camera and everybody’s vision- the white sail-shaped edifice of Spinnaker Tower; it is hard to miss and draws the eye as easily as a sponge draws water. It is a cathedral-spire of tourism where visitors safely behind glass 105 metres above the sea enjoy the spectacular views across the harbour and southern Hampshire. Below it, and fully resplendent with its towering masts and jet black hull is the iron clad warship Warrior. A magnificent Victorian vessel launched in 1860; she was the 64…

portsmouth | dockyard pride of Queen Victoria's fleet. Powered by steam and sail, she was the largest, fastest and most commanding ship of her day and she has lost none of that impression of power despite being chained and permanently fettered to the shore. In all her shining and fascinating glory she is just a part of Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard and all its illustrious and Royal Navy displays. This world famous destination is one of the finest visitor attractions in the UK and has been even more so in recent weeks as our story returns to one of the first ships we mentioned; the Mary Rose and the brand new state-of-the-art museum that has brought in 52,000 visitors in its opening month. The new modern sculpture of the building that houses the wreck of that fine ship sits alongside what is probably one of the world’s most famous warships, HMS Victory that even with her top gallants, the highest part of her masts, missing she is instantly recognisable. HMS Victory continues to be a commissioned warship of the Royal Navy under her Commanding Officer and ship’s company and remains as the flagship of the Second Sea Lord. It is the unique part of the Portsmouth Harbour story in that this most famous and recognisable warship sits just yards away from the Royal Navy’s latest ships of war; grey and featureless compared to Warrior and Victory but infinitely more efficient and powerful. One of the best ways of experiencing all these ships and more is to join the harbour tour AUGUST 2013 •

Australia where the Summer never ends

If you don’t want this fantastic summer to end, head down-under this winter where you will find not only superb weather but pristine beaches, vibrant cities, stunning scenery, weird and wonderful wildlife, in fact you will find all this and much more when you visit Australia. The most popular itinerary for first time visitors to Australia is an east coast extravaganza taking in the Icons of Sydney and the Barrier Reef as well as some of the less well known sites but equally inspiring such as Fraser Island and Lamington National Park. Soft adventure is very much high on the list, Treetop walks and 4 wheel drive tours through the dense sub-tropical rainforest, with time out at Lake Mckenzie to swim in the crystal clear waters and marvel at your surroundings, that could easily be mistaken for an idyllic beach in the Indian Ocean, all of this and much more can be found as meander up the east coast. A typical itinerary will include time in Sydney; this exciting and vibrant city always has plenty to offer from breathtaking Harbour views to singing waiters at the Opera House. Once out of town the 800 mile drive north to Brisbane has plenty of opportunities to break the journey and you can expect the warmest of welcomes with The Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and Port Stephens amongst the most popular stopover destinations. As you amble up the coast your time will be easily spent with bushwalking,

cowes | the party

All ashore

For serious sailors and anyone who just loves messing about in boats Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week regatta is the Wimbledon of the seas.

I

t’s the event that everyone wants to be at; tough racing on some great waters and then revelling in the atmosphere on shore between races. For the non-sailing fraternity though, a day on the Island is like a holiday romance; exciting, fleeting and a whole lot of fun with some magical memories. Whilst renowned for the après-sail party atmosphere; from Family Day to Ladies’ Day there is something for everyone and plenty to entertain all day and every day throughout the week including live music, great food; plenty of Pimms and of course the spectacular fireworks on the Friday night. What many people do not realise though is just how exciting and colourful the sailing is, even for those not really interesting in boating. Joining the hundreds of people on the green that slopes down to the water’s edge, enjoy the spectacle of the racing yachts and dinghies passing within just a few yards of the shore, battling for line honours at the finish in front of the Royal Yacht Squadron with its gleaming row of bright bronze cannon that boom out starts and finishes with the accuracy of an expensive timepiece. Michelle Warner, a Director of Cowes Week Ltd is one of the many people who make the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week work. “There are spectacular views of the action all along the seafront on the western edge of Cowes and it is as exciting and colourful as the Friday night fireworks with all the colours of sails flying past,” she told Solent Life. “But, even the visitors to Cowes can get out on the water on one of the Spectator Boats and gain even better vantage points while treating the family to a chance of getting right into the action. If that seems a bit tame then there are always the thrills of the rib rides which take people out onto the Solent.

“Back on shore, picnicking on the green along Queens Road and on Egypt Esplanade is always popular as everyone there are like-minded souls and so it becomes one big gathering. Whether on a boat or on the shore, because the racing is so close, there are plenty of opportunities to take photographs and we would love to see your best images uploaded onto our website; we even have a competition with an amazing prize for the very best of them,” Michelle added. “It is important for all of us involved in Cowes Week to ensure that non-sailors engage with everything that is happening; it is a far bigger event than just the sailing; for the Island and for Cowes.” In Cowes itself buskers and street musicians entertain crowds as visitors wander the charming streets; the Cowes Yacht Haven is one of the main centres for entertainment with its small village that, as well as plenty of food outlets and bars also has the live stage with music that will get you up and dancing; this year one of the big bands performing is The Wonder Stuff on the Tuesday evening. All in all, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is a sailing regatta, one of the best, the most famous and without doubt the most historic, but alongside the cut and thrust of the sailing action there is the heady business of entertaining everyone and anyone who takes the ferry across the Solent for a day with a difference. All are welcome during Cowes Week! SHORE WATCH - One of the best locations to watch the starts ashore each morning is undoubtedly the area between the Castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the cannons – as long as you don’t mind the loud bangs! Here you can get right on the line and see who got the best start and which boats were over the line.

You can also hear the race officers giving their countdowns and calling the starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron battlements. In the afternoon, head along the Green towards Egypt Point to watch as the various classes finish. The exciting action of 18ft Skiffs, probably the most extreme form of high speed on-water action, will be racing off The Green on the Wednesday and Thursday between 5pm and 6pm. Head down to enjoy some great close-to-shore action!

Stay tuned in to Cowes Radio on 87.7 throughout Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. This special event radio station is an integral part of the event, keeping you up to date with everything going on.

Two of Life’s Finest Fine food and fine wine; two of life’s finest pleasures and yet good delicatessens and wine shops are few and far between.

I

n Park Gate, on the eastern side of Southampton, there is one recently re-vamped example of these food emporiums and it is as different as Cork and Cheese. Philip Harris is in charge of Cork and Cheese Delicatessen and Wine Merchant. “I have always had a love of food, even as a child. After not excelling in academia there was only one place for me to go; catering college!” explained Philip as we sat in the comfortable café area of the shop over a decent cup of coffee. “So, when I left school that catering college was really the only stopping off point for me. “I then cooked for many years before being involved with on-set catering within the film industry and working a number of major films including the original Superman movie; I still have a Superman pin that was given to me by Christopher Reeve; a very cherished item. Long hours of work and a new family did not blend very well and that drew me away from the industry for a while until we moved from our home in Guildford to the Wickham area and once there we discovered there was nowhere to buy fine food and good wine; the simple answer to the problem, I opened the Hampshire Deli in Wickham Square.” Philip began by selling local produce but the desire for more exotic foods from his customers meant he had to spread his net further. “I began to source foods from across the UK and eventually from destinations around the globe but always with the same caveat in that it had to be produced by artisans and it had to be of the highest quality. “As an aside to the joy of supplying such fine foods I did win several awards but over time the deli expanded into other outlets and became a great success until after ten years of hard work it was time, I felt, to retire. It was not long before I realised that retirement did not suit me and it definitely did not suit my wife as she soon got fed up with me getting under her feet!” That abrupt end to the retirement came about after his wife spotted an opportunity to run the deli in Park Gate, within 24 hours Philip had sent in his CV and shortly after was once again in the catering trade and supplying the finest of produce. “It was only at the beginning of June this year that I took over the Cork and Cheese here in Park Gate; its owner, Colin Baker, also owns Titchfield Vineyard; so once again I was dealing with local, high quality produce from a local supplier. 84…

Local cheeses, which are some of the very best, meats from nearby counties and as much produce as can be locally sourced; we are so lucky in this region with the quality of produce from so many talented and dedicated independent producers.” One of the specialities of the house though is a bespoke hamper; while sitting and enjoying a coffee or speciality tea in the café area you can discuss your needs. “You often hear people ask; ‘what do you get the person who has everything?’; that is simple, get them a hamper!” Philip and his team can offer everything from a simply packaged and inexpensive hamper to a traditional wicker hamper that also becomes part of the gift; and there is always someone on hand to give advice about the various wines, cheeses, meats and their accompaniments. “I have always prided myself in having an ethos of friendly, professional service at all times and that is blended with an ability to source the very best in produce while still listening to customer requirements and comments. An added bonus here though is not just the café so that our clients can take their time over a coffee and a sandwich; but we have the award winning range of wines from the Titchfield Vineyard; a local product that is sourced virtually on our doorstep.” Philip is obviously both passionate and very knowledgeable about this business and he will be more than happy to discuss or advise on the relative merits and background to the range of produce available.

VE YOUR

FOOD

Once upon a time, pub menus were not so extensive; the choice was simple, ham or cheese ploughman’s and a packet of crisps. But then pub grub went through an evolution to boil in the bag concoctions and chicken and chips in a basket – but thankfully things have changed; inns now have to serve up something special to bring in the crowds and it is not just the upmarket and so called Gastro Pub getting the plaudits, it is the local, the pub down the road, the one with the caring landlords. 90…

N

ot so long ago the Silver Fern in Warsash had been a fairly ordinary, but well known landmark village pub; taken over by Greene King and more importantly by General Managers, Sharon and Garry Brown, the pub has changed out of all recognition. In fact, on the day we dined to produce this review, the couple were in Lincolnshire awaiting the result to see if their pub, already named Greene King Locals Pub of the Year for the South West, out of 153 taverns, would win top prize as one of the three finalists to be best out of 450 Local Pubs. The menu is actually quite extensive and includes a few twists; burger and hot dog menu, a very good children’s selection and on Thursdays a Fire and Spice treat of a curry and beer package. But, take a peak at the speciality menu and you know they have a proper chef out in the kitchen. So what did we try - A trio of fishcakes; Cod with Lemon and Parsley, Smoked Haddock Kedgeree and finally a Smoked Salmon with Boiled Egg were a huge success to get a meal started. Each fishcake had distinct flavour and texture and all three with a crispy outer coating while the interiors were flaky and served with a refreshing citrus mayonnaise, fishy and fun to eat. I wanted something a little lighter and so went for the simple Flame Grilled Prawn Skewers which were served with a very delicious and colourful mandarin and chilli glaze; simple, well presented and a tasty way to begin a meal. Duck Breast in Maple was a beautifully presented, and very, very tasty portion of a duck supreme marinated in maple smoke flavouring served with either sautéed potatoes or unusually and very welcome for health conscious diners, a baked sweet potato; it also came with the most amazing sticky, sweet and stunning dandelion and burdock sauce (told you this was not any old pub menu). Chantenay carrots, green beans and leeks completed the dish. Tasty duck breast, cooked perfectly and just a tad pink, was lifted by the rich, sticky sauce and the vegetables offered great taste and slightly crunchy texture. Mahi Mahi in Hickory was a delicate white fish; flaky, smooth textured and fresh tasting; marinated in hickory smoked flavour topped with buttered leeks and roasted cherry tomatoes. It was

light, stunning in flavour, great in texture and I would have been happy to eat this dish in any top restaurant; and yet here I was eating it in a comfy pub in Warsash. The Mandarin and Chilli glaze poured over the fish, as with the duck and its sauce, only added to the flavour and colour of the dish. I am not sure if we had room for dessert or just that the rest of the meal had been so good we did not want to leave without trying one, or two! Again a simple but effective choice; Churros, the Spanish fried dipping doughnuts were sugary, soft and so wicked when dipped in the pot of warm runny chocolate. And, my Banoffee Bash of crisp digestive crumb layered with creamy banana mousse with moist toffee muffin chunks and served with toffee sauce and cream, should just be made illegal; it is far too nice to be anything else. A pub lunch should be a way to eat that is simple, fun and delicious; it should offer good friendly service in nice surroundings and if there is a big garden, as there is at the Silver Fern for hot summer days - even better. Here at Solent Life we hope that Sharon and Garry win their pub of the year contest, they have worked, with their loyal team, hard and long to turn this into a good pub that serves really good food – and for me and my dining partner that day they certainly ticked all the right boxes!

The Silver Fern offers special deals on some meals but for our three courses the cost was just a touch under £20 a head without drinks; great value for money for what can only be described as a wonderful lunch. How clean is your Tile?

NATURAL Stone, Porcelain and Ceramic tiles are beautiful to look at and worth every penny of your investment! But what happens when they get dirty? Do they lose a little of their ‘wow factor’. Are you tired of getting down on your hands and knees to scrub grout lines or have you just given up. Well, fear not for the Hampshire Tile Doctor is here to help. They offer free advice and free quotations on how to clean and restore any sort of natural stone, be it Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Terracotta, Slate, Victorian tiles, etc Imagine your natural limestone entrance hall floor tiles, your terracotta or slate kitchen floor tiles, or your ceramic bathroom wall tiles, even your granite worktops and splash-backs being made to look as if they were freshly laid. Also, have you ever noticed the difference in shade of colour of the grout at the very edge of the room, which should be almost as new and the grout in the middle of the floor now? It can be surprising how even with regular mopping, the grout always looks dirty. Why? Because the grout channel attracts soil which mopping often glides over. So why not let The Tile Doctor clean the grout so it looks new again. The old days of mops and toothbrushes are gone forever!! And what if the grout is that badly stained? No problem! They can even re-colour the grout for you, from a range of subtle colours. After the cleaning process they apply a professional application of an impregnating sealer, which does what it says. It impregnates the tile and/or grout and gives an invisible protective barrier that will leave your floors so much easier to clean. Sadly, some tile fitters never seal the tiles or grout they lay… which means you could damage your floor by spilling some everyday products you have in your kitchen or bathroom. So why not let the Tile Doctor clean and protect for you. Call now on 0800 695 6959 or visit www.hampshiretiledoctor.co.uk, for a free ‘demo’! 4… 92…

KITCHEN INVESTMENT A long-held passion for Dennis and Sandie Hodgetts was the rebuilding and renovation of a series of family homes; this inspired them to a new passion and after years of seeking the right opportunity… “I saw The Hampshire Kitchen Company for sale,” explained Dennis to Solent Life. “Having run successful businesses in the past we just needed to find the right venture to suit us. We met John Olden and his designer daughter Karyn and realised these were people we could work closely with; as soon as we met them it felt right.” With John wanting to semi-retire he wanted to make sure that the future was secured for the company he had built up over the last 36 years. Dennis continued the story, “It has taken several months of hard work from both sides to ensure that not only the business side of things was handled properly, but that the transition period would run smoothly over the coming years ensuring the quality of workmanship and reputation remains at the highest level; which is why John is in semi-retirement to enable him to work with us, and his daughter Karyn is staying with the company as its designer”. “We have the best fitters in the business and that was vital for us when we invested in The Hampshire Kitchen Company, and it is important that we continue with that hard work and dedication begun by John and Karyn,” he continued. “Now it is up to myself and Sandie, along with Karyn still creating her wonderful designs, to take The Hampshire Kitchen Company forward while keeping that tradition of friendly service with a high quality of build. One of our new plans is for us to begin designing and building quality bedroom furniture; bespoke and hand-built.” John Olden will continue during his retirement to work closely with Dennis and Sandie over the next few years, something they are both very happy about. “With our passion and enthusiasm linked to John’s continued support as well as Karyn’s customer driven designs, and I think she is one of the finest designers in the south, the future not only is secured for this well-respected local business but that future also looks good for Sandie’s and my investment.”

DUTIES

Neil Daykin is Senior Technician at The Mayflower and as he explained about his job; “If it’s got a plug it is the domain of James Chant and I, we are the electrics department.

The other two technicians deal with the things that splinter…” Neil added. While The Mayflower was ‘dark’ recently, with work being carried out on the foyer and front of the building, Solent Life took the opportunity to step backstage and discover how some of the magic works. “The touring production’s electrics departments will be the ones that build the rigs of lighting and put them into every venue, recreating what has been designed for the show but on top of the show lights we will provide basic front of house lighting; that could be a system on its own of around 40 lights,” Neil explained as we stood on the vast space that is the stage and wings of this amazing theatre and looked out into the impressive auditorium. “The whole premise of lighting is that people; the audience, can see the actors and the set, it creates atmosphere, enhances the entire production, highlights specifics and leads the audience eye as needed. This is a massive space to light but in that space we also need the capacity to only light small areas as well. We all work as a very close team but we are, what is known as, a receiving house and so we have to work with the visiting technician as well as the cast. “On a reasonably large musical there are between five and eight ‘bars’ of lights and

96…

the | mayflower

each bar can end up weighing as much as half a ton when carrying 20 to 30 lights. Every light has a specific task and a purpose. Traditionally it was one light for one job but now, with modern technology we have automated lighting that can move and change colour or pattern so each light now has more than one job to do. “When a production is due in we are sent a book of exactly what we are receiving, depending on the show between 10 and 20 pages of bullet points that tell us how many trucks are coming, what is the size of the footprint on the stage that they need for the set build and a whole list of other things to arrange and ensure. We also have to make sure the building can take the rigs; next summer we have a show coming, yet to be announced, that will need 35 tons of gear from the roof; so we now have to consult with structural engineers to make sure we can do that safely. “We supply much of the nuts and bolts, the ‘dirty crew’ that unload and then load again on the breakdown of any show; we have the specialised knowledge of this venue. In the past in my career I have worked in smaller producing theatres which is very satisfying but working here at The Mayflower we have massive challenges with any of the big shows and that gives me incredible job satisfaction. Now we are taking shows to launch their tours and we may well be getting a lot more involved which is an added excitement to the tasks we have. “When a show is particularly challenging, because of the sheer scale of the show we then feel the excitement from the audience, especially if it has been just a one day set-up, which often happens. The audience will be queuing outside while the company go through the final technical rehearsals and they cannot come in until we hand over to the Front of House team to open the theatre, and hopefully that is bang on 7.30! At the end of the evening when the more than 2000 strong audience leave then the FOH hand the Theatre back to us to either break down the set or re-set it ready for the next show. The load out of a big show can take all night, and that will be after a twenty hour day. Effectively we are the frame that houses the show.” “We have our own sub-station for the electricity and that could light a small town. Some sets hanging from the roof can be up to 35 tons. The centre set of the Phantom set weighted ten tons and we had to put in props to hold up the floor. There are around 700 dimming sockets for the lights. 3000 amps of power are available to us, when a home would have a 100 amp fuse. And the big travel-spots up in the back have the longest travel for the light of any theatre in the country; 150 feet from light to stage and they cost £21,000 each.” Neil Daykin was talking to David Rose-Massom www.mayflower.org.uk

marshes | & lakes

A First Taste of

Autumn

As the school summer holidays get started the natural world is actually slipping rapidly into autumn and this applies especially to birds.

B

y the start of August the southward passage of birds is well underway and at Farlington Marshes this is very obvious in the rapid rise in the numbers of waders. It might seem early for them to be heading south, but many of them breed in the very high Arctic. If you visit the Lake at high tide the wader roost might include ringed plover from Baffin Island, knot from eastern Greenland, curlew sandpiper from the east Siberian coast, dunlin from northern Norway and hundreds of black-tailed godwit from Iceland. More remarkably perhaps, many of these birds will only have completed the first leg of a journey that might take them down to southern Africa. Farlington Marshes is a vital stop over, a safe place to stay when the high tide covers the mudflats of Langstone Harbour. Places like Langstone Harbour are important because they offer an abundance of food allowing the quick rebuilding of the fat stores that fuel these extraordinary longdistance migrations. I always find it remarkable that such small creatures can make flights of thousands of miles within just a few weeks of hatching, drawn on by instinct alone, but learning about the route as they go.

104‌

.co.uk • AUGUST 2013

They also give us on the south coast of Hampshire a tangible link with distant, perhaps unvisited places on the roof of the world. At least in part it is the resources of our coast that make possible this incredible seasonal flow of wildlife. In total many millions of wading birds are on the move right around the northern hemisphere by the middle of August. They may not have arrived on their nesting grounds before the second week of June and may have had as little as sixty days to complete all the stages of nesting and get away before the snows set in again. Nesting so far north gives perpetual daylight for the growing young and there are few resident predators to worry about, but the short season leaves no room for second chances. The high Arctic is particularly at risk of change as the climate warms meaning that conditions where the birds nest are changing fast, to the benefit of some but the detriment of many. In addition there is a global loss of mudflats as more are reclaimed or just gradually lost to rising sea levels reducing their migration refuelling stops so making the journey even harder. There are still millions of birds making these almost unbelievable travels, but the future of this annual event is uncertain. So if you are out on the coast in August and see a group of waders fly by, consider the travels they have made and still have to make and the places that they link together and the small but vital part that our bit of coast plays in their globe-spanning story.

Swanwick Lakes in

marshes | & lakes

August

If you walk quietly and carefully along the paths at Swanwick Lakes during the month of August, you might be rewarded by the sight of a common lizard basking in the summer sunshine.

P

ath edges or walls make great basking spots because they trap the heat of the sun. Lizards, like other reptiles, need to warm their bodies by sitting on these sun-warmed surfaces. Where there are tussocks of vegetation nearby then it’s an even better spot because this will provide insects and other small creatures for the reptiles to eat, as well as cover from inquisitive eyes! Young Grass Snakes should also be around this month. Grass Snakes lay their eggs in piles of decaying vegetation, like compost heaps, which keeps the eggs warm. Look out for the adults swimming in Centre Lake- they are good swimmers and sometimes hunt in water for the frogs, toads and newts which they like to eat. If lizards and snakes aren’t for you, then there is still plenty of other wildlife and beautiful views to enjoy while walking around Swanwick Lakes in the late summer sunshine. Our butterflies got off to a slow start this year thanks to the cold Spring. Now, however, they can be seen fluttering around the meadows and through the woodland glades. The little brown Speckled Wood butterfly appears at first glance to be rather uninteresting

compared to some of the other species on the reserve. On closer inspection you will see the beautiful speckled pattern that gives this understated butterfly its name. Adult Speckled Woods do not feed on flowers, like many butterflies, but on a sugary substance produced by aphids. Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve is an 86 acre reserve located on Sopwith Way, off Swanwick Lane. The reserve is owned by NATS and managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The reserve is open from dawn until dusk for all to enjoy. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust works to create a better future for wildlife and wild places in Hampshire and the Island. HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SHOP? It has been said that we are a nation of shoppers, with over £311bn being spent in the UK last year. Despite a huge growth in Internet shopping, around 90% of that total is being spent in actual shops. (Kantar, 2013) For a lot of people, figures like that may be surprising as we are regularly being told in the media that the High Street is in decline. Yes, it can be easier to purchase a book, CD or DVD online, get next day delivery for free and know that your payment is secure. This versus heading down to town, finding a parking space and then being told that the store hasn’t got what you need in stock despite, in some circumstances, you reserving it for collection beforehand online. That said the value of a physical bricks and mortar store should not be underestimated. A recent survey also showed that 70% (Kantar, 2013) of us like to touch or try out a product before we buy it. Above all, in the world of retail, price remains king; more than two-thirds of us will shop online to get the best price so for the retailer, striking a balance between having a nice store or showroom and keeping costs low is crucial.

GARDEN MACHINERY SPECIALISTS ONLINE OR IN STORE At Carters of Swanwick, we have risen to the modern challenges – we have a newly refurbished showroom providing a welcoming, knowledgeable and pressure free environment alongside parts and servicing. Proof of this is your experience as a consumer, so please feel free to pop down to the largest garden machinery showroom in the South, have a cup of coffee on us and see for yourself some of the 1000 plus products we physically stock, backed up with decades of friendly knowledge plus our well reputed after sales and care. If however, you prefer to shop online, please do visit www.cartersofswanwick.co.uk or the Best Buy Mowers website where you’ll find our wide range of products, plus we are never more than a phone call or email away, ready to assist you.

August Gardening Let’s hope for sunshine in August, so we can enjoy the outdoors. It’s a pleasure to potter in the garden if the weather’s good. Deadheading roses and other flowering plants will encourage more blooms. Cut back straggly growth of summer bedding plants, and keep on top of weeds so they don’t get a hold and seed.

Summer planting

Celebrate summer with bright colours in the garden. Rudbeckia is a big winner with its large daisy-like yellow flowers. It’s a hardy perennial that likes full sun or partial shade and spreads to about 60cm wide. Rudbeckia is easy to care for and flowers from now until October. Our plant of the month is the phlox, which helps create a lovely cottage garden effect in colours ranging from white and the softest shades of pink and lilac through to vibrant reds. It likes rich, moist soil, and a shady spot. The larger varieties need staking otherwise they flop, but dwarf types don’t.

Spring bulbs

Bulbs arrive at the Garden Centre in mid-August. Think about the types you’d like and start planting in late August and September. There are so many to choose from, whether you want bursts of daffodils or more delicate drifts of snowdrops, and everything in between. Plant bulbs in well-drained soil. As a general rule, plant three times the depth of the bulb, or check the planting instructions that come with the bulbs. You could plant some in containers for early spring colour and position them where they’ll cheer you up. As a nation, we’re generally moving towards greener gardening. It’s easy to achieve and it makes you feel a little virtuous too! Tips for greener gardening: • Grow the right plant in the right place, then it will flourish naturally. Ask a plant expert at Garsons for more advice. • Ground cover plants such as heather and many others are natural weed suppressors. • Choose drought tolerant plants like lavender and geranium that don’t need much water. • Invest in a water butt and a composter. • Keep on top of weeds by hoeing while they are still small. • Apply a generous layer of mulch over your borders to suppress weeds. • Get a bird table and bird bath, then keep them topped up to look after your feathered friends. • Encourage wildlife by creating habitats for them: flowering plants for bees, indigenous hedgerows for birds and shady areas for slow-worms.

Jobs for this month

• It’s an ideal time to take cuttings of many plants, as an inexpensive way to fill up your borders. • If you have fruit trees, check for canker, caterpillars and fungal spots. Drop in and get our advice if you’re not sure what to do. Once you’ve harvested all the fruit, give the tree a prune to keep it in shape. • Give evergreen hedges a shape and tidy up if needed.

Holiday fun at Garsons

THE EVENT

Humbugs and Flimflam I

t is appropriate that Chichester Festival Theatre is currently under a big top style temporary roof constructed in the middle of a park, while the main house undergoes renovation, for the summer musical production this year is Barnum; the wonderful show about the ultimate and world’s most famous showman and the man who brought the world’s biggest circus to the American public. This is a Cameron Mackintosh production, probably today’s biggest and most successful showman, and it is big, bold, colourful and stunning, so much so it drew two standing ovations from a thoroughly entertained packed house of 1400 people. PT Barnum is a huge role with the main character on stage for virtually the entire show; he must juggle, walk tightrope and rush around stage with a manic energy while portraying America’s first millionaire and most famous producer of anything to entertain and earn him a dollar, as he was quoted as saying, ‘every crowd has a silver lining’. Song and dance man Christopher Fitzgerald is the actor taking on this role and although small in stature he fills the stage with his energy and force of performance. Chaplinesque at times he moves easily from clown to broken man and back to comedian; no matter the frantic manner of his performance his singing remains faultless, his character strong and believable and while playing this great showman he takes on that mantle and ‘suckers’ the audience into his world of exhibition and entertainment. The production is about a showman and the lead role is played by a superlative showman! His wife Chairy Barnum played by Tamsin Carroll is a perfect foil for Fitzgerald’s Barnum, she is prickly

when needed, sharp when taking Barnum on in battles of will and her singing is powerful and engaging. The entire cast of actors, singers, dancers, circus performers and musicians are well cast and all work hard offering the happiness they feel in performing out to the audience for us all to share. Fire is thrown, ropes are climbed and tumbled down, acrobats throw themselves across the stage and it is all done with perfect timing, great singing and amazing precision. So much is going on during the finale that it is like a firework display of human colour and acrobatics and you will not know where to look. Barnum is the latest in a series of summer musicals at Chichester’s Festival Theatre and it by far, by miles in fact, the best and most thrilling in a series of summer successes. If you go to no other theatre event this year, take a drive down to Chichester and enjoy the razzmatazz of a great show, with a little bit of circus, that will leave you heading home with a broad smile and stinging hands from all the applause.

THE SPRING, Havant. In the Mezzanine Gallery until 19th September. Contact the box office for more info Phone: 023 9247 2700 www.thespring.co.uk SINGING’ IN THE RAIN: following its recent sell-out season in London’s West End; the Chichester Festival Theatre production of the musical SINGING’ IN THE RAIN will now play the Mayflower Theatre from 16th September to 5th October 2014; tickets are now on sale. stage and screen leading man Maxwell Caulfield as studio boss ‘R.F. Simpson’, Coronation Street favourite Vicky Binns as starlet ‘Lina Lamont’, James Leece as ‘Don Lockwood’, Amy Ellen Richardson as ‘Kathy Selden’ and Stephane Anelli as ‘Cosmo Brown’. Don Lockwood is a silent movie star with everything he could want - fame, adulation and a well-publicised ‘romance’ with his co-star Lina Lamont. But Hollywood is about to change forever. There is rumour in the studio of a new kind of film, where the actors actually talk…and sing...and dance. Can Don and the uniquely voiced Lina make the transition and will chorus girl Kathy Selden fulfil her dream of stardom and capture Don’s heart along the way? Tickets for Singing’ in the Rain (Tue 16th Sep – Sun 5th Oct 2014) are on sale from The Mayflower Box Office tel: 02380 711811, online at: mayflower.org.uk or in person from the Mayflower ticket south shop in the Marlands, Southampton. Ovation Restaurant bookings: 02380 711833 LUDOVICO EINAUDI: Einaudi has quietly become one of the most successful musicians in the world. His hauntingly beautiful and evocative music tops the charts (particularly in the UK and in his home country Italy) and he has sold over 1.5 million records and he has previously sold out the Royal Albert Hall. His music has been described as minimalist, alt-classical, ambient and contemporary, but it defies easy classification. He sums it up best: “There is something in it that comes from classical, but I have influences from different music I have experienced in my life, from African music to folk and rock.” BIC WINDSOR HALL; Thursday 15th November and tickets are on general sale now.
