It has been a month of exciting events for the team here at Solent Life; a day trip with the Jubilee Sailing Trust onboard their magnificent square rigger Tenacious, a day on the Isle of Wight during Cowes Week for Ladies Day giving us the chance to celebrate the achievements of women in sailing.

As many of our young people head off to universities across the country we talk with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Portsmouth about the new higher fees and the effects they appear to be having on student intake. Our roving reporter David, talks to the organisers of the Portsmouth Air Festival and gets an insight into the reasons for the postponement of the 2012 event and the amazing support for next years event; he heads into the clouds, well almost, for a taste of high living in the south’s highest penthouse; and visits one of the Solent Life region’s microbreweries. ampshire is a county with many faces, with its coastline, rivers, villages and forest; but one of its most glorious visages is the farmland to the north of Winchester around the pretty village of Micheldever. Just a couple of miles from this quiet rural settlement, and across the A33, are Micheldever Woods.

Alongside the firm gravel track and standing resilient despite nature having finished with them are naked, almost haunted, dead trees that send out spindly fingers which grasp at the imagination and offer pictures of witches covens and dangerous walks in the darkness of the woods. A startled pigeon bursts from the undergrowth shaking walkers from their reveries and causing a wry smile because of overactive imaginations! Then thoughts return to beautiful green glades, sunlight bursting through leafy canopies and a long history of an area that has been occupied, one way and another, for centuries. Micheldever Woods has an archaeological trail of just over a mile that was established by the County Council; two examples to be discovered on the trail are a Banjo Enclosure and an ancient Burial Mound. These sites were here long before the woodland took

over when the area was ancient farmland; there are reminders from the Roman era (AD 410), while along the trail there is one site from the Bronze Age between 2000BC and 1400BC, and signs of Saxon settlement between the 5th and 11th Centuries AD. With its shape carefully cut into the rough grass the first point of historic interest is the banjo enclosure, so called because of its clearly defined shape reminiscent of the musical instrument, this type of settlement can be found in several places throughout the chalklands of North Hampshire. The woods themselves, which have grown up around these ancient sites, are a mixture of coniferous and deciduous trees and the ‘untidy’ natural growth between pathway and dense woodland is filled with wild flowers and butterflies and as I stood taking notes on the ancient burial mound these charming, colourful

and delicate creatures flitted and danced around my head as if they had discovered a new playmate. Behind the notice board that explained the, almost unimpressive ‘bump’ in the landscape, was a mound covered in grass and meadow flowers. It did stick out as something that did not quite belong but because of its history and age there was also something strangely intoxicating about it that grabbed the imagination and offered a desire to learn more about why it was there and was it just a site where the ancient dead were buried, or indeed just dumped? Incidentally, this part of the walk alongside the mound is the only part that is not on made-up tracks and can be soft and muddy for a distance of around 100 yards or so. Far from being convenient dumping sites for their dead, these burial mounds were constructed of excavated chalk and were the final stage in a funerary ritual that often involved more than one burial. The construction of such a mound suggests that it was in fact the culmination of a complicated set of ceremonial practices. The mounds were also placed in a significant part of the settlements so that they could be seen at all times by the Bronze Age settlers, becoming a focal point for their beliefs and rituals. As I left the mound behind I noticed in the soft mud the clear cloven-hoofed prints of deer, although sadly I saw no sign of the actual creatures that made them. Realising that this would be a fairly short

journey, I headed back to the main, and arrow straight, pathway and followed it to its conclusion at a gravel crossroads some 20 minutes or so further on and just enjoyed the summer sunshine that crept through the tall trees and the natural surroundings that it lit so well. That crossing of pathways made a natural point to turn around and head back to the burial mound, along the way noticing that in several places footpaths disappeared into the thick growth of trees and offered myriad adventures to woodland explorers. Back past the burial mound, and once again marvelling at the history, the muddy section once again opened out onto a gravel track where more skeletal trees reached into the blue skies as if trying to grasp the odd cloud that drifted by. Although I prefer to see things that are living these trees offer fascinating shapes and inspire the imagination! A short way further along I was surprised to see, in the shadow of the trees, a splendid children’s fort built of wood. In front of that small structure was a beam, a foot off the ground and travelling deeper into the woods, a plaque at one end offers youngsters the opportunity to travel the length of the world’s tallest tree. Even for an adult this was a staggeringly long beam that sent a reminder of how powerful nature is. I sat on the beam close to the fort and watched as a slug; (are they slugs or just homeless snails?) slithered by. Above me the light breeze rustled through the tops of the trees and further above that I could hear the plaintive

cry of a buzzard as it wheeled on broad wings and warm thermals. Despite this walk being deep in woodland with its hints of ancient arable communities the area is surrounded by fields of modern farming and crops, golden swathes of corn and wheat leaning with the wind and it makes for a glorious drive to reach Micheldever Woods. As I said at the beginning of this journey; Hampshire is a county with many faces and this walk reminds us we should never forget the most important face that first shaped our wonderful county and that is the face of the history and the peoples that first settled in the area we love so dearly. ● Micheldever Woods is a large maturing beech wood with some areas of mature conifer. HOW TO GET THERE: Micheldever, a pretty little village, is the nearest town or village and just six miles north of Winchester. From Junction 9 on M3, travel north on A33, turn right on to Northington Lane. Car Park is half a mile down lane on left hand side.

ummer almost failed to arrive, just honouring us with a fleeting glimpse of her bright array of colours; all too soon it is autumn’s turn to entertain us with her many shades of browns and golds; the bad news – it means getting an early start.

As we have said many times before on these pages the so called ‘Golden Hour’ is the prime time of day to get the best from your photographic safari. As the sun broaches the horizon the light is the best it will be all day, and the perfect scenario would be a misty start, then to have the sun burn the mist away leaving you with a bright sparkling morning.Plan your day well and you will get some stunning images; and the joy of seeing the best shots for your endeavours will be in that planning. Don’t just jump into the car and see what you can find, you only have a short window of photographic opportunity. First port of call could be a coastal scene; find somewhere such as Portsmouth Harbour, Bosham, Christchurch or Hill Head where boats sit at anchor and the early morning mist offers magical and mystical scenes. As the sun rises and warms the atmosphere the mist gradually recedes offering even more chances of a great shot. Just before the mist disappears completely, head for wooded areas near lake or river, if inland somewhere then perhaps along the Itchen, there are also some great spots near to Winchester, the Avon near to Ringwood or somewhere like Swanwick Lakes close to the River Hamble – one of my favourite spots. Here you will find the sun’s rays shining through the gaps in the tree tops and forcing their way through bands of remaining mistiness. The results through your viewfinder can be amazing. Finally as the sun clears the landscape into a bright vision the autumn colours of the foliage as it changes into its winter nakedness are something to be admired in our county. So planning is the key, early start before daybreak, have your destinations mapped, keep driving time to a minimum and remember a tripod, you will need one for your misty scenes and may have to try several aperture or speed settings to get the right result. Get it right and by 10am you will have images on your memory card to be proud of and already be sitting down to a well earned breakfast. ●

er Porchester home is a testament to the fact that an artist lives there, the walls and shelves throughout the house are a gallery of her own work, the work of friends and the work of favoured artists. Every room brings smiles and gasps of appreciation as the individual pieces come into view. This month’s artist is Nathalie Lomas and her own art is as eclectic as her collection from various artists. “I was bought up in Devon; my mother is French hence the spelling of my name, and our home was near Exmouth; close to both the beach and ancient woodland,” Nathalie was explaining to Solent Life where her inspiration comes from. “My love of tree-work comes from living in and around that woodland and my inspirations derive from the roots and branches of the individual trees.” Nathalie is a painter and photographer as well as a silversmith which she incorporates into her three dimensional paintings as well as a range of stunning jewellery; this artist cannot get enough of multi media when it comes to her work.“My work reflects my love of nature but it is also mixed with an art deco styling which I suppose is a little strange at first,” she continued. “After working with the silver I would have small pieces left over so I began to incorporate that into my painting and use box-frames to show the pieces off.” That three-dimensional art work shows the rustic and country feel that she brings to her

work and that comes from her early life in Devon, sweeping blues for skies, autumnal strokes and fill colours for the backgrounds and then the additional silver work becomes bursting seed pods or shimmering leaves shining with dew. A necklace shaped like a sycamore seed pod would grace any neck and the piece that she wore as we spoke was reminiscent of a farm gate with flowing corn behind it and a rising sun. With each piece, whether a painting, photograph or jewellery they seem to carry that tag of nature, the beach and the countryside. “I am a moth in that I am attracted to the light of all things artistic. I want to learn so much and try new things; I want to learn the skills to mix my work and my mediums.” Nathalie admits to being a restless soul who is always on the cusp of trying something different. “I suppose it could be confusing for me but sometimes it seems that I create a series of work and when finished I just wonder how I got there; it is very organic, the way my work is formed.”

Unlike many of our featured artists who admit to picking up a pencil as soon as they could hold one; it was not until she was 15 and sitting her GCSE Art exam that she first became truly interested in art. “It just suddenly connected with me and I have loved it ever since. At 16 I began to play with copper wire and I just started making things out of it. Then a local stained glass studio threw out a box of coloured glass scraps and they were perfect for making some wonderful mobiles.” Nathalie took those mobiles to local tourism style art galleries and they began to sell well. “They were selling, the feedback on them was wonderful and then I discovered they were being sold and taken around the world.” Then her early years of shore and woodland took over and her mobiles were being made of small pieces of driftwood and pebbles from the beach. Then at just 18, she opened her own shop. “I found an empty shop on the harbour in Exmouth and I wanted it even though I was studying for ‘A’ Levels at the time, so I dropped all the other subjects, except art, and I was able to get the shop for just £25 a week as it was due to be redeveloped following planning. “With the help of friends we stripped out the unit which was a wreck of a shell and managed to acquire some wooden planks from a timber shop which was closing down. We called the shop ‘Clanger’!” That name was inspired from the glass and silver mobiles she was making at

the time. One enormous mobile hung outside gently clanging together when the shop was open to attract the public. As well as her own work she also exhibited and sold the work of other artists, either charging them a commission for sales or getting them to work a day in the shop. One of the charming things about Nathalie Lomas and her work is that almost every stage of her creative life has been recorded in large ‘diaries’ with photos, sketches and words. A few of the pages recorded those early years around the mid-nineties and a very bohemian lifestyle. She was asked to produce some large jewellery pieces for a fashion show, in which she also played a major part of the show as a model. “It was at a time in the West Country which was very Bohemian with its youth culture and arts. Then, as I am now I suppose, I was hyper and always producing and creating.” As if she did not have enough artistic strings to her bow Nathalie still had the urge to learn more skills. “I had my two sons and for the first six years of their lives I was a stop-at-home mum and being the sort of person who has to keep going I suppose I had a touch of cabinfever and so I thought I would like to try interior design – and so I did it!” In 2002 Nathalie received an unconditional place to study a degree in Interior and Furniture Design in Exeter and she describes this as a pinnacle moment in her life as she was opened up to a different way of thinking, and using different, inspiring materials to work with. She was awarded with her Bachelor of Arts with Honours degree in 2005. As well as being the mother of two boys, now 13

and 15, Nathalie also has a job with a Fareham company, but even there her work is not far away as they have given her wall space to exhibit some of her pieces. Over the years her work has included beautiful water colour paintings, mosaic covered fountains and even a wooden tepee for her boys when they were younger. “My dad was a fisherman and handyman and always had tools around, now, for a girl, I have loads of tools myself which I can work on anything with.” So, what will happen in the future and where will her art style go? “My art is in constant evolution and is forever changing. I love painting, I think that is my favourite medium, but I also like to give it that 3D aspect, I love mixing media and blending metals with paint. “But the next big thing for me, following a successful exhibition in a London gallery, is my New York exhibition, which I am busy preparing for!” Well they say save the best bit for last! ● WWW.NATHALIELOMAS.CO.UK NATHALIELOMAS@HOTMAIL.COM

THE WHITE DOG TIP With the new academic year starting perhaps it’s time to think about joining an art group of which there are many in the local area. The Portsmouth & Hampshire Art Society for example, was founded in 1909 with WL Wyllie as its first President and is still going strong today. The Solent Art Society is a newer group, with members producing a wide range of work. Most art societies hold annual exhibitions giving members a chance to display – and hopefully sell – their work to the public. t around 11:45am on 21st October 1805, the most famous naval signal in British history was sent – as the British fleet closed with the opposing combined fleets of France and Spain, Lord Nelson signalled all the necessary battle instructions to his ships. He then ordered the signal ‘England confides that every man will do his duty’ which for ease of signaling was changed, with Nelson’s permission, by his signals officer John Pasco to the message we all know today; ‘ENGLAND EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY’. On 21st October this year, at 11.45am the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s tall ship Lord Nelson will leave the quayside at Southampton to embark on the first leg of Sail the World; an epic adventure that will cross the equator four times, sail 50,000 miles and visit seven continents and 30 countries. To give Solent Life a very small taste of what life will be like on board a square rigger we were invited for a Day-Sail around the Solent on sister ship Tenacious. It may not have been an epic voyage – but the experience was none the less a real, and memorable, thrill! Even quayside, she catches the eye, black hulled, with white topsides and towering white masts and yardarms; she looks every inch the classic English rose. On the prow a white mermaid reaches forward to grip firmly the emblem that holds the initials JST. Excitement builds, then the heart races as the invitation to step aboard is given. Up the gangway and you are aboard Tenacious, the Jubilee Sailing Trust’s beautiful square rigger. Our fellow crew members, yes we were all crew, no passengers here; worked their way on board, some strutted up the gangplank, some hobbled and struggled on walking sticks and wheelchair bound 18…

crew were hoisted on board. Jubilee Sailing Trust vessels are totally inclusive, where able bodied work the ship alongside less able bodied and everyone helps in the running of a true sailing ship that is rigged by rope, pulley and human power and not by electric winch. In this feature, the first of two articles on the JST, we chat with wheelchair bound crew member for the day, Guy Riddy. A second brain aneurism left Guy disabled and wheelchair bound, but to watch him dart about the decks using his good leg for power-thrust and steering you feel nothing but inspiration from this lovely man. It seemed that no matter where you were on the ship Guy, who looks totally at home once on board, would be parking up nearby to grab a rope, drink a mug of tea or just take a moment to watch the watery world off the boat drift by.“I feel at home on here because everyone is equal on board, there is no able or disabled because everyone is here to challenge themselves and to push themselves to their limit,” Guy explained as we sat close to the rail watching the Solent drift by below us. “You try to do more than you believe you are able because at the end of the day it leaves you feeling good about yourself.

“I am looked at as one of the crew on the ship but this is as much about the able-bodied people and crew on board as it is about me; as it is also about getting them used to working alongside me, and not the other way round.” Guy has been in his chair for six years and in June this year he got married. “My wife is also disabled but fiercely independent, as I am, and we just get on with life,” he continued. “The hard thing for anyone in my situation is accepting limitations but on board the tall ships the limits are easier to accept. On one journey we had a visiting crew member who was deaf and totally blind, and yet he climbed the rigging to the crow’s nest – he was an absolute inspiration to everyone on board.” Guy has been on a couple of cruises already, and was welcomed on board Tenacious as an old friend, and he hopes to take a couple more trips in the next year. We asked if he ever felt at risk in a wheelchair while on-board a sailing vessel; “If you do go overboard just remember to un-strap yourself from the wheelchair because you don’t want to go down with it!” We checked and there was a wicked grin on his face. “It is a little frightening when the seas are rough but you know with all certainty that you are totally safe and that you have total faith in the full-time professional crew.” As Guy and I sat talking, the Captain of Tenacious, Simon Catterson, paced back and forth, something he does non-stop to ensure that he can see all parts of the ship and the sea in front of him as the masts and rigging do offer a restricted view of what is going on. Simon’s

professional manner and wary eye instills confidence in his ability to control the ship and all on board. In the blink of an eye, Guy was no longer at my side - he had ‘wheeled’ his way along the deck to grab hold of a rope and help drop one of the massive, white, square sails. The Jubilee Sailing Trust, as we have heard from Guy, is about changing lives, it is a registered charity that owns and operates Lord Nelson (which Simon with great affection calls Nelly) and Tenacious. These are the only two tall ships in the world designed and built to enable people of all physical abilities to sail side-by-side as equals. The Tall Ship sailing holidays with the JST provide everyone the thrill and adventure of life at sea and everyone can be involved in almost every activity on board. Take the helm, set the sails and keep watch, all regardless of physical ability and previous sailing knowledge. The cost of joining a cruise, be it a Day Cruise such as the one we were on or the Sail the World adventure, is subsidised by the Trust so the costs on every voyage make the tall ship adventures as affordable and inclusive as possible. JST also offer extra bursary funding and fundraising advice for those individuals who might struggle to afford the full voyage cost. As much as I enjoyed chatting with everyone on board, and as we were all there for the same reason everyone quickly became friends, it was time to take a quiet moment wandering around the deck and taking in my surroundings. Out on the water it was a busy day as it was the first full day of Cowes Week and every few moments, leisure boats of all descriptions would draw near

to just take in the glorious spectacle of a tall ship gracing our home waters. Although they were aboard ribs, speedboats, yachts and gin-palaces the envy toward those of us on board Tenacious was clearly visible. We joined Tenacious under dark clouds, almost as soon as we left the quayside it rained hard, but hot tea and coffee and bacon and egg rolls were soon making us care less about the rain as much as the sheer joy of being on board. As the day continued the rain stopped, the clouds parted and blue skies joined us for our day-long adventure. It was a glorious day, on a beautiful ship with some very inspirational and friendly people; both ship and new friends were hard to part company with as our short journey came to an end. Taking place in Cowes each September, the event hosts three days of racing and shoreside entertainment. his year’s intake of university students are the first to be affected by the new, and greatly increased, fees so as the latest ‘A’ Level results were announced Solent Life returned to The University of Portsmouth to ask Vice Chancellor, Professor John Craven, if the scare stories with regard to a drop in new student numbers quoted by the national press are well founded or nonsense.

“This year our entrants are indeed the first to be affected by new fees and we are at the beginning of that process. There is always a number of students that either don’t turn up or realise within the first month that they have perhaps made a mistake and then drop out although in our capacity calculations we allow just 7% of the total student number for no-turn-ups and drop-outs,” Professor Craven explained. “The important thing for us to do, as a university, is to focus on those that do remain. “The increase in fees has been in the air for two years and last year its approach was highlighted even more, when there was an unusual increase in the number of 18-year-old students as they opted not to take a gap year knowing that higher fees were coming,” he continued. “2011 was a big year but this year is more comparable to 2010. “There will be an affect caused by fees - that is expected and now that ‘A’ Level results are through, we are expecting very few who are truly concerned with regard to the debt bought about by the years of study,” the Professor added. “Universities that rely on recruiting more through clearing may have some concerns, however, here at Portsmouth we are more than happy with the way things are going.” Clearing is a service provided by UCAS (University and College Admissions Service) and is available to potential and unplaced students between July and September to find suitable vacancies on higher education courses. One of the perceived issues being reported nationally is that numbers of international student places are increasing and, as a result, capacity for UK and EU students is dropping; 28…

was this the experience of Professor Craven? “We as a university have to recruit around 4,300 UK students; which we will be very close to,” he responded. “It is the UK numbers that are set by Government as it is they who supply the student loans. “International places, from outside the EU, have no restriction on them as they take no Government funding and we can recruit as many as we have capacity for. In 2011 we had a little over 2,000 international students and we have succeeded in our incoming target for that side of the university for this year.” The Professor added. “The Government here has taken away around 500 of our UK student intake for a number of reasons, mostly budgetary; but we will not increase the international numbers of students, it is not a trade-off - this is not a university decision and these are policies that are thrust upon us; and we have lobbied against them!” So, has the financial picture of the university changed? “Last year the fees were around £5,000 and we are now building up to around £9,000; so with a dip in student numbers this year we will maintain roughly the same income and financially, we still remain a very viable university. “We have not noticed any change in the demographics at the moment, and we will not know this for six months, but. we think that we are still receiving a cross-section of socioeconomic backgrounds for applicants. “We are a mid-range university in that we don’t take the highest ‘A’ Level numbers, or the lowest, and it is the same with backgrounds. As an institution this is certainly not a time of

crisis,” he emphasised. Despite the increase in student fees, it seems that The University of Portsmouth has achieved a certain amount of status quo with both its finances and its student intake and that despite media ‘bad news’ stories, little has actually changed; although with that said the university year is not yet underway and there is much more information to be garnered before any final answers are available for the many questions rising from the changes. ● WWW.PORT.AC.UK

A FAREWELL STORY

One last story came out of our meeting with Professor John Craven, and that is with regard to his impending retirement. He has tendered his resignation as Vice-Chancellor with a year’s notice while his replacement is sought. Professor Craven told us. “At the moment I get just one and a half days weekly for the garden and it really needs an extra day each week. I may also become a student, there are so many things I want to do and read.” He was educated at Cambridge where he read Mathematics and Economics and then took up a Kennedy Memorial Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Various appointments throughout the UK led to his being appointed as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Portsmouth and he took up that position on 1st January 1997. Solent Life wishes him well in his retirement.

The King’s School – Fair Oak (For children age 3 to 16) The King’s School is starting this academic year with a series of events to celebrate the school’s 30th Anniversary. The last year was closed out with the first of two reunions where 100 past pupils and teachers returned to meet in the brand new school hall. Paul Trevett (the school’s first head) was first to speak and he told the story of how the pioneers succeeded against the odds to establish the first independent Christian education school back in 1982. Ken Ford (head of primary from 2001 to 2005) then spoke of how the subsequent years were filled with instances of God’s power and grace. Finally, current Head Master, Paul Johnson spoke of God’s faithfulness in the school’s latest developments: growing in number to 270 pupils, the delivery of a £1M capital development project and the establishing of one Year R – Year 11 school on one site. The celebrations will end with a second reunion on Friday 7th December 2012 All past and present pupils and staff are warmly invited. Pupils will be returning this term to a brand new kitchen which brings food and catering back onto the curriculum led by TV chef. Paul Darmanin. The completion of these latest facilities makes The King’s School among the top local independent providers with four acres of sports fields, first rate specialist music, drama and art classrooms and on-site parking for parents. Academic results remain consistently high and there are only a few spaces left in many of the various year groups. This makes this highly affordable school a must-see this year and open days are advertised regularly Results were very high again at The King’s school with 85% of pupils gaining 5 high grades or more. Most pupils gained over 10 GCSEs. Science results were very good this year with 20% of pupils achieving AAA or above in triple science. Maths and English remain strong with 80% high grades. Itchen’s A Level pass rate rises again Staff and students at Itchen Sixth Form College were pleased to welcome another year of strong A Level results, as pass rates edged up again. Student Helen James described A Level results day as ‘the best of her life’ when she discovered that she’d gained the grades required to study the Geography degree course at the University of Southampton. Ayshah Sawjani, who received three A grades and an A*, described her A Levels as ‘not easy’, stating that choosing subjects she enjoyed was important and helped. She will now be studying a degree in Chemical Engineering at Imperial College in London. Sarah Gordon, who took a day out from her new job as Cabin Crew at Easyjet to come and collect her results. After studying a range of Travel & Tourism courses at Itchen, Sarah said ‘Itchen has the best courses’ and has ‘prepared her for real life’. College Principal Barry Hicks, speaking on A Level results day: “Today is an excellent day as Itchen maintains improvement across A Levels. 100 per cent pass and success rate for first A level students at City CollegeCity College Southampton’s A level provision has got off to a flying start with a 100 per cent pass and success rate for students in their first year. The college began offering A level qualifications alongside vocational courses last September and in 2012 the first wave of students to take the programme received the results for the first stage of their qualifications - AS levels. The results follow the news that City College has the top success rates for 16 to 18-yearolds in the area at advanced level (Data Information Service* 10-11 data). City College introduced ‘combined’ A levels in September 2011 to give students studying vocational qualifications the best of both worlds - the academic stretch as well as the hands-on confidence. By combining A levels with vocational qualifications the college says students are likely to get even better grades in their practical work, with the A level underpinning their knowledge, and they will have a competitive edge when they go for jobs. And from September 2013 City College will expand its A level provision even further as it offers stand-alone A levels in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects. From its city centre campus, which has had a £48m redevelopment in recent years, it gives students the ability to experience hands-on and academic learning in the best possible environment, using equipment that is used in workplaces across the world. ducation for some children is not as straight forward as parents hope it will be, there are times when circumstances demand a little more tuition and where a little more of the one-to-one touch is required, that is where this month’s featured educator comes in…

way

It is strange to discover that the classroom is set in the midst of a small business park and on entering the ‘office’ how quiet and industrious the atmosphere is. Nine students, from very little to a fourteen year old, are sitting in front of their computer screens and all are busy with their own set of school problems. On hand to help are Jan Long, Centre Director, and teacher Linda Smith. This is one of the UK’s 240 Kip McGrath Education Centres. As Jan spent time talking with one of the parents at child-collection time; Solent Life managed to quickly chat with Linda as she prepared for her next lessons. “This is the most fun you can get teaching; you get to know the students and their needs and it is so satisfying to see them achieve things,” she said. “The children and the parents are here because they are just so keen and the motivation is wonderful.” Jan and Linda are best friends who have worked together for many years and finally Jan was able to sit and chat about what they do and what the aim of their education

centre is. “A great deal of our time is spent speaking with the parents and that level of involvement is all to the benefit of the child. “This is my second year as an owner but the McGrath Centres have been going since the 1970s and this particular Centre has been running for some 8 years and I bought it from the previous owners who retired,” Jan explained. Kip McGrath Centres provide school tuition for more than 28,000 students of school age who need extra revision or an extension of their school work. The belief of the company is that not every child thrives in the normal school environment; some experience difficulty in keeping up while others get frustrated from lack of understanding, and as a result they lack hope. Through ‘KipMaths&English’ programmes the youngsters overcome these learning obstacles through a boost in confidence by being provided with a caring and stimulating environment that makes learning both fun and effective. “After a career spanning some 20 years I had become disenchanted with what was going on in the State school system, and all its frustrations,” Jan continued. “It is now such a ‘target’ driven system and I went into teaching simply to teach and that was just getting harder to do and this tutorial style of teaching was just perfect for me. “We have children from many different backgrounds and we have to overcome problems such as language difficulties. It is very easy for a child to get lost in the modern education system and that is no fault of the teachers; there are just not enough hours in the day for them to spread themselves around a class of maybe 30 or

more children.” We asked if there was a typical child that attended their tutorial style lessons. “It is impossible to sum up a typical child in any system and here especially we work with the individual child so we can help them achieve their potential and do so with confidence,” she responded. “Much of what we do is about confidence; when they get to feel successful they can then go on to be successful. “We replace the foundations in a child’s education so we can build on that solid base. It all begins with an assessment of the child and their needs and then we develop an individual lesson plan and from there it is about building the education around that child and then extending their abilities.” Jan went on to explain that with the system of education they use, they can work with any special needs, which is one of the reasons the groups are kept so small. “And when we speak of special needs we mean both ends of the spectrum with challenges like dyslexia and highly gifted children as well. We never have more than five students to a teacher,” she added. “This is the most rewarding teaching I have done in a 20 year career because I see children achieve something everyday they are here. bout to tour in Dickens most popular story, giving her the chance to slip into a couture frock while she’s at it, actress Paula Wilcox explains why she has every reason to travel hopefully.

Asking actress Paula Wilcox to recall the moment when she decided that she wanted to be an actress elicits a recollection so vivid you almost feel that you were there. “I would have been about thirteen and I went with the school to Manchester’s Library Theatre to see Henry lV Part One,” remembers Paula, who is about to play Miss Havisham in a national tour of Great Expectations. “We were studying the play at school and it was amazing to me that those words on the page could be transformed by the actors. They became believable characters, and the line they spoke just sounded so natural – I was blown away by the whole experience!”

Inspired to start taking acting classes, Paula got a place in the National Youth Theatre at seventeen. And while many of her fellow students went on to drama school or university, Paula didn’t need to. Her ambition to be an actress was attained almost immediately when she was spotted and swiftly offered her first job; a TV sit com called The Lovers, written by the late Jack Rosenthal and playing opposite the young Richard Beckinsale. But it was her second job in 1973 for which she is perhaps most widely known. Arguably one of the most famous sit coms in history, Man About the House ran for three years. But Paula was itching to try her hand at the sort of theatre that had first fired her enthusiasm.

“I kept harking back to seeing Shakespeare and so after Man About the House I went and did masses of theatre,” explains Paula, who as well as receiving critical acclaim for performances at some of the world’s most prestigious theatres has also been on our screens in recent times in shows such as Doctors, Rock & Chips, Emmerdale and currently in the most recent series of Mount Pleasant on Sky. But it is theatre that has Paula’s heart once again, as she takes up the challenge of playing one of Dickens’ most famous women. “I know the book really well because I studied it at school and I’m a big fan of Dickens,” enthuses Paula, who says she was honoured to be asked to play Miss Havisham. Rated as the most popular Dickens story of all time in a recent poll by The Guardian newspaper, Paula admits that this particular version, by Jo Clifford, was an especially enticing proposition. “When I got the script it was a bit of an eye-opener. I’m always led by the script and this is a wonderful adaptation; very succinct but it doesn’t feel at all rushed. It’s all told in a very leisurely way, but with nothing wasted; you’re always being moved on to another set of characters and another bit of the story. I knew as soon as I read it that I wanted to be involved and that it could be magical,” she smiles, adding that the set design also grabbed her attention (“very striking and very dramatic!”). And with 2012 marking his Bicentenary, Paula can see why Dickens has endured. “He was a complicated character himself but he wrote great stories and his characters, even the most straightforward ones, all have back stories. And of course he had this massive social conscience.” As for Miss Havisham, Paula confesses to being intrigued by the woman who, having been jilted at the altar, hides herself away, remaining dressed in her wedding finery from that day forwards. “People do shut themselves away emotionally, but when you think of someone closing themselves off physically like that it really is quite extraordinary. I’m interested in this whole thing of someone literally stopping the clocks and not wanting to hear anything about anything,” she nods, with the air of an accomplished psychologist engaged in fathoming a particularly complex case study. But as well as being captivated by the set, the adaptation and the character, there is also the lure of a rather special costume. Designed by Giovanni Bedin for the House of Worth (Charles Frederick Worth, who created the first couture house, was a contemporary of Charles Dickens) Miss Havisham’s wedding dress is going to be a truly unique creation. “All I know at this stage is that it’s going to be quite spectacularly ‘out there’ and that it’s going to be quite impressionistic,” teases Paula, declining to give anything else away. Interestingly, there has never been a production of Great Expectations staged in the West End. Could the time be right? Certainly Paula hopes so, but in the meantime she is looking forward to touring the show to some of her favourite theatres across the UK, including The Mayflower Theatre in Southampton. “I have played the Nuffield Theatre before, but I’ve never been to The Mayflower, so it will be a new and exciting experience,” says Paula. And with a 15-strong cast, including Jack Ellis (evil screw Jim Fenner in TVs Bad Girls) and Chris Ellison (Frank Burnside in The Bill) it certainly sounds as if this is a big show with wide appeal. “It’s very family friendly so I hope lots of kids will come to see it,” says Paula. “It’s a wonderful story and there’s not a child alive who doesn’t identify with Pip and who isn’t frightened by Magwitch and this woman who lives among ratinfested cakes and who has her veil chewed by mice. It’s going to be a very extravagant and theatrical experience.” Talking of being theatrical, what advice would Paula give to young

aspiring actors? “It’s difficult to say, but I think those who rise to the top have talent, tenacity and stamina and all sorts of other things. I suppose I’d say don’t give up. These days every profession is precarious, so just go for it.” Pausing for a moment, her next words highlight her natural modesty and immense likability: “It’s hard to give advice when you’ve had a lucky break as I did.” But with a career that continues to flourish there is undoubtedly more to her achievements and staying power than luck; one suspects that Paula’s success has more to do with her being astute, refreshingly grounded and hardworking than it does mere good fortune. Oh yes, and she also happens to be a damn good actress. ●

iccola Roma, it means ‘little Rome’, and in the centre of Bishops Waltham this new restaurant does indeed offer a flavour of that most romantic of cities and all its delights. The chefs are Italian, Erasmo, also the owner is from Rome and Norberto the head chef, from Genova. Charlie, Nortberto’s wife, is English although speaks Italian fluently. She read the menu items with such perfect pronunciation, almost as though it was her native tongue. In fact my dining partner asked her to repeat the dish she was ordering just to enjoy the pure elegance of the language. It is interesting to note that on certain dates, they even have an Italian table, where nothing but Italian is spoken.

As we perused the menu I asked Charlie about opening Piccola Roma in Bishops Waltham. “Bishops Waltham is a thriving market town with a wealth of unusual and independent shops, cafes and restaurants and there is a strong community feeling here. “Piccola Roma was born not just because we love the town but we also felt there was room for an authentic, reasonably priced, family friendly Italian restaurant. “Our chief aim is to make our diners and guests feel they are being welcomed into a little slice of Italy...evoking memories of holidays, sunshine and, above all, the good food of that city!” She added. The walls of the dining room have some lovely black and white photographs of the Rome of a few decades ago and the characters that have shaped the city. Some are film stills while others are street scenes,

but together, they all add to the overall atmosphere. But it is in the first floor dining room that a true feeling grabs at you and places you in the city. A good friend has painted a mural, a 360 degree panoramic depiction of Rome. Whilst it is only an outline sketch, of the famous and iconic buildings, it is a wonderful work of art and draws the eye to different parts of the city opening the imagination of the diners even more. Charlie offers the specials menu, once again reading the dishes with the romance of Rome in her voice; she blames her husband for that influence. It is one of those menus with such well described dishes that you make your choice quickly, and then your eyes drop down the menu and something else catches your eye, so you decide on that, then… You get the idea! While we chose, an appetiser of small pieces of Focaccia,

flat Italian oven-baked bread topped with olives and herbs, served with an olive oil dip was placed on the table. It is all that is needed to awaken dulled taste buds. Liz, my dining partner, went for the Insalata Caprese, sliced beef tomato topped with buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil before being drizzled with virgin olive oil, one of my all time favourite dishes. I was torn between Bresaola Romana, thin slices of cured beef; and a classic Calamari Fritti. Sometimes it is the most simple of dishes that can go wrong and so I thought I would test the chefs and see what they did with the deep fried squid rings. A simple and clean looking plate of food was placed before me, with golden rings of calamari, a balsamic drizzled salad garnish and the garlic mayonnaise that was topped with a dusting of paprika. The batter was golden, crisp and very light, the flesh inside was soft textured and full of flavour; it was in fact one of the finest Calamari dishes that I have tasted.

answer was on the Specials Board, Pasta Fagioli, means simply ‘pasta and beans’ and is a traditional meatless Italian dish. One of the downsides of pasta it that it cools quickly but, unlike so many restaurants these days, the hot foods here are served on hot plates – simple equation hot plates = hot food; while cold plates…! Suffice to say my pasta was piping hot throughout, every forkful offered a slight variation on the amazing flavours because of the medley of beans and every mouthful was just amazing. Chef later asked about the dish explaining that he was trying it on the specials list prior to, maybe, putting it on the main menu come autumn and winter. I hope it makes it to the winter menu as I will be in there again for the warming and filling dish. Despite the glories of my own main course it was to Liz’s side of the table I was once again looking and wishing. She had chosen, on Charlie’s recommendation, Abbacchio allo Scottadito; a Roman classic. Three grilled and trimmed lamb cutlets served on a bed of slightly coarse mashed potato and garnished with a serving of spinach. Tender chunks of very tasty lamb, mixed with the mash and balanced out by the iron-flavoured greens was a triumph in every sense of the word. It looked great, smelt amazing and tasted even better; once again I was allowed the privilege of a small sample. Dessert was an easier choice, a Tiramisu and a crème Brulee; both home-made, the former was a mixture of powdery textures and creamy flavours that just melted away on the tongue while the Brulee had a crisp caramelised topping and a soft, gentle custard dessert below. Both dishes superbly executed and a perfect end to a wonderful; and it has to be said, romantic meal. Check on the website for special offers or events and if Such is the atmosphere you are very local to the restaurant they also do takeaway it would feel like that pizzas (which also look delicious). The foods are cooked to if you were alone or order by Italian chefs, using fresh and local produce whenever with the family; and possible. The pizza is made to a traditional Roman recipe this is a perfect family which apparently ensures a higher digestibility than many of restaurant.● the pizzas you can buy. Our three course meal without drinks came to around £25 per head.

That said, it still did not stop me looking with some jealousy at Liz’s dish! Bright red tomato topped by clean white slices of mozzarella and garnished with the deep green of the basil. While Liz ‘oohed’ and ‘aahed’ with enjoyment, solely to make my envy worse, she allowed me a taster; the basil hit the taste buds immediately, quickly followed by that wonderful soft milky flavour of the cheese and both added to by the fruitiness of the tomatoes. If I returned to Piccola Roma today I still would not know which of the two to choose! I was in the mood for a pasta dish, but still wanted something different from the norm, the

one swift

fter a short drive through the glorious Hampshire countryside we entered through the farm gates at Bowman Ales, a typical British artisan beer maker based near Droxford in the Meon Valley, famous for its award winning real ales such as Swift One and Wallops Wood.

“Micro brewing is all about size…” Martin Roberts, along with his business partner Ray Page, has been brewing for some 20 years and they started Bowman back in 2006. “We are a 20 barrel plant at the moment producing 720 gallons a brew. We make that size brew every other day but in the very near future we will expand to a position where we can brew double that,” he told Solent Life. As it was such a warm day, and we were there to investigate the world of Microbreweries, it would have been rude not to try a glass (and I had brought a designated driver with me for the day just in case). Martin drew a glass of Swift One from a barrel; a wonderful, clear, amber nectar that reminded me of the colour of the wheat from the fields that surrounded the small brewery. As we sipped on the clean tasting ale Martin explained a strange coincidence. “It was only after we had named this ale, simply because we liked the sound of ‘going for a Swift One’ that we were told that Meon is a Celtic river name, probably meaning ‘swift one’ in reference to the speed of the river.” So what makes this modern resurgence in popularity of the small brewery different to the bigger producers? “Care, passion, quality

of ingredients and also in our case our own water supply straight of the chalk hills of Hampshire that has no additives such as chlorine or fluoride,” Martin explained. “That water is a constant quality and has been filtered down through the chalk, making it very clean water; it is held in a reservoir on the top of the hill and gravity fed down to us here in the brewery. “The location on this farm was a stroke of luck for us because it helped us produce beers from a blank canvas, so to speak, with regard to the flavours. The water has a hardness to it and we soften it slightly by adding sulphates, so it is likened to the water in Burton-on-Trent. This is known as Burtonisation, a standard brewing practice because Burton water historically is high in sulphur and produces some of the very best ales.” As with a lot of small businesses; we wondered if the current financial crisis was affecting small independent brewers such as Bowman. “The financial climate has not been the problem and it has not hit us; and others like us, as much as the real climate. The bad weather has hit us hard with many outdoor events being cancelled. But again because of the small size of our business that downturn has been manageable.”

What is it about running a small brewery, apart from the obvious, that makes it such a rewarding occupation? “It is one of those rewarding jobs; so little is made in the UK these days that just being part of a company that manufactures a really good product is a real joy.” Martin said with a hearty laugh that seems to be a trade mark of his. In fact all the small team working in the one-building brewery seemed to be a real happy band of people that were obviously enjoying what they do. It is a two week process to take their product from hop to glass. “As a small brewery we are also able to always look for new flavours and styles of beer. We get an idea of the beer style we want then look at the hops available, such as a hop with a citrus character. “What we do is also very localised; we do business with friends and local pubs - our furthest outlet is just 30 miles away,” Martin concluded as we continued to sample the company product. “We have a wonderful relationship with our customers that a big company just would not be able to have. If one of our pubs or events run out of a beer over a weekend or evening, it takes nothing to put a couple of barrels in the boot of the car and run it over; and you could not expect a big brewer to do that.”Even between microbrewers there is camaraderie. “We do not have a bottling facility here and that is done for us by another local brewer, Oakleaf Brewery in Gosport. We may all be in competition in business but we are all in the same business and at the end of the day it is much better to work together, there is a lot of back scratching, and there is room for all of us.”Microbreweries seem to be a growing trend, no longer do the big beer producers claim a monopoly, and that means we as consumers, get a

Suthwyk Ales was the brainchild of Martin Bazeley, an arable and dairy farmer from Southwick, back in 2000. The award winning malting barley grown by Martin on the slopes of Portsdown Hill became the main ingredient for his own ale, way before ‘local’ and ‘food miles’ were fashionable. Pubs, off licences, farm shops and delicatessens around the Home Counties have stocked the four beers since. Brasserie Blanc and The Tate Modern restaurants are also permanent stockists. Five years after launching Suthwyk Ales, Martin turned his attention to the Southwick Brewhouse, a scheduled ancient monument in the heart of the village behind the Golden Lion. Empty and abandoned since 1957, but with all the Victorian brewery equipment intact. Refurbished but still retaining all its original features, the delightful building is now home to the unique and fascinating museum and outlet for his and many other craft brewed real ales and cider.

se a word often enough and it will lose its potency. Hero, was one such word, but over recent years with our armed forces in volved in conflicts it has taken on new strength and meaning. But, call a true hero by that title and he will just dismiss it with a shrug of his shoulders and tell you he was just doing his job, the best way he knew how.

Dave Henson says he is not a hero, and he did shrug the comment off; “I stood on an IED and it threw me two metres in the air and I landed on my head.” This is said in much the same way as you or I would comment on a stubbed toe! “I realised straight away my legs were useless, it was pretty obvious, and some of my guys immediately applied first aid – that was life-saving as I would have bled-out in five minutes or so.” After initial shock and anger his training took over. “I got one of my guys to get my smokes out and got a second member of the team to call the HQ at base and tell them what had happened while the

others kept watch for us. I was still in charge! They looked shocked and the look on their faces was the distraction I needed for me to keep going. There were seven in our team and we had spent four months together so we were close and knew how to work as one unit.“It was better that it was me, I don’t know what I would have done if it was one of them,” he added. Here at Solent Life we have no idea what you call a man that can suffer such physical and mental trauma and then worry about the men in your command; but we think ‘hero’ fits the bill quite nicely. We first became aware of Dave and his story when we were

approached by a local company who had been working with the double amputee to supply him with a sit on mower. Carters of Swanwick asked us for no publicity, just thinking Dave’s story should be one that is shared and used as an inspiration to others, but then we learned that within an hour of placing the order for his new mower Carters had realised his first choice would not suit him and his injuries and so went back to him and explained why they had changed the order. Dave is grateful for that care and service as his mower is now his all-terrain vehicle and workhorse. “The mower is my all-round tow-truck and I would be lost without it, I ordered one but they came up with better alternative and it is a beautiful thing, I can get all around my garden in it plus I use the trailer for hauling all sorts of stuff up the drive.” It was mid-morning when I knocked on the front door of Dave’s house, a voice from around the corner invited me in through the patio doors where he was sitting on the floor about to put his legs on; if it was good enough for him it was good enough for me so I joined him on the floor where our chat quickly mixed with laughter and irreverence. “I was a Royal Engineer Search Advisor; it was my job to find the IEDs for the bomb disposal guys,” he explained in matter of fact tones but with a hint of pride for his team and the job they did. “We were on a compound clearance so that locals could move back into it; I had crossed one way to check for enemy and it was while crossing back I stood on the device!” Dave Henson is still in the Army and is now a Captain; “I passed all my promotion courses in November, nine months after the explosion on 13th February last year.” He also pointed out that it was not that unlucky as it was a Sunday and not a Friday; then added that they were in team 13! “It has been a rapid healing process for me,” Dave continued. “Fourteen weeks in and I was walking. Lifting weights has helped me maintain fitness; my brother is a Strength and Conditioning coach and that has helped me and we still weight-train together. I swim, play wheelchair and stand up basketball, , I love sport still.” His time with the Army will soon be coming to an end though. “As an officer there are routes open to me and available and my leaving is a joint decision. I don’t want to look out of my window and see fit lads going off training and then on deployment; I just cannot live the lifestyle that I love anymore.” This he said without a hint of bitterness. “From a personal point of view I knew before I left the UK there was a chance of it happening and so you adjust yourself to the possibility. Since it happened I have just had to adjust to reality and the staff at the rehab centre, my girlfriend Hayley, my brothers and sister, family, friends and my colleagues have all given me an amazing support network.” Despite dramatic events life has moved on for Dave, and Hayley. “We moved into our house just a couple of months ago and we have been DIY-ing our backsides off ever since. Sometimes fourteen hours a day, lifting tiles, painting walls and all that sort of thing and it is only Hayley that sees the frustrations that nobody else sees, so I think it is

harder for her than me. I get to vent my frustrations but she just has to deal with them.” Before the explosion Dave was six feet, two tall but has now added two inches. “It is the special ankle joints in one of my sets of legs, it has added a couple of inches which is not as much fun as it may seem as that raises my centre of gravity and makes my balance a little harder.” He has a year left before his medical discharge but he intends to

continue to work for better lives for other service personnel like him. “I am going to return to university for a year and get my degree in Biomedical Engineering, I already have a First Class Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, but I want to go into research and development with a team to improve the link between machines and body, a bit like the Terminator; to make artificial limbs that are proactive rather then reactive.” As Dave put his legs on he explained that the modern prosthetic limb works from sensors in the foot part that dictate what the joints do. He also explained a task that many of us take for granted. “I cannot climb a ladder, the last time I tried it took 45 minutes to make the first rung; it is a very simple tool but the using of that tool is complex; I want to be part of a team that comes up with a limb that can do that and more, operated as if by thought rather than by action.” Dave Henson says he is not a hero! I say he is and we will agree to disagree on that point, but one thing is certain; he is a fine young man (28) who is turning a huge negative in his life into a positive and hopefully helping others in the same situation. Asked if he would take his legs back if there was a way to do that, his response? “In a moment I would; but we have to make the most of what we are given in this life.” ● An improvised explosive device (IED), also known as a roadside bomb, is a homemade bomb constructed and deployed in ways other than in conventional military action.

Two Saints have launched a unique organised charity bike ride across Cambodia and Southern Vietnam, taking place in November 2013. The trip, featuring a total ride of 400km over two weeks, promises to provide all participants with both the challange and the experience of a lifetime.

Two Saints are looking for people who have a reasonable standard of fitness, a spirit of adventure, people who would like to work as part of a team to make a huge difference to people in need, and can spend around 16 days away from home for the trip of a lifetime. Each participant will need to be able to cover their costs (around £900) and raise a minimum of £2000 in sponsorship.

Behind the mirrors are also the magnificent en-suite and there is a mirrored dressing room to complete the sleeping ensemble. Adjacent to this bedroom is also an office area that, as with everywhere else, offers a workable and comfortable space. Back down the sweeping staircase and as evening falls and the lights sparkle from the spinnaker and the surrounding towns and cities it is time to settle in the evening lounge, the ideal spot to unwind after a hectic day, or to sit with friends and family to chat about whatever comes to mind, while in the background the Perspex piano, which greeted our arrival in the penthouse, plays well known tunes without the aid of the pianist; it is a lovely touch! The journey through opulent living continues with the cocktail bar and the cinema area, with its 65” plasma TV. For the feeling of space it can be open plan or by closing the sliding dark glass walls, the formal dining area can be separated from the cinema and bar area. This graceful dining area seats eight comfortably and as with all the furnishings it is comfortable luxury and designer elegant. All the rooms and living areas are proportioned perfectly, large enough to feel spacious and roomy, and yet small enough to feel homely while still showing off the curves and colours of the furnishings and art works. The kitchen is subtle; it is designed with easy living in mind and is clean lined and uncluttered and of course, it includes a quality coffee maker for the morning espresso or the afternoon cappuccino. For lounging and relaxing, there are two separate areas. The ‘Day Space’, adjacent to the kitchen and for informal dining and relaxing in the lounge area or enjoying the panorama from the terrace. On the opposite side of the penthouse can be found

the ‘Evening Space’ a spacious lounge to enjoy the sunsets whilst relaxing in the sumptuous furnishings or for those balmy evenings out onto its own evening terrace Working areas of the daily home life, like the utility room, are tucked away behind hidden doors; again, only the best of equipment is installed. Everything about the Lipstick’s penthouse, or, should I say ‘ No 1 Gunwharf Quays’, is dramatic, is inspiring and, it has to be said, beautiful both on the inside and with its views of the outside world. he weather’s been changeable but I hope you’ve managed to enjoy your garden over the summer. September can be a cooler month and the days are shorter but we might be treated to an Indian summer. If so, the asters, sedum and rudbeckia will keep the garden going for another two months, but make sure they’re well staked as the taller varieties are prone to toppling in rain.

Asters are Garsons’ plant of the month. Their cheerful daisy-like flowers look gorgeous in the border and carry on flowering into autumn. They’re most commonly a lavender-blue shade, although there’s a wider spectrum. The island series are particularly good for their dwarf growing habit and lovely range of colours. By including asters and sedum in your garden, you help extend the season for nectar-feeding insects. As gardeners, we can play a part in contributing to the feeding ground for insects that struggle to survive. The heat of summer will stay in the ground for a while yet. Factor in some rain and this makes autumn one of the best planting seasons because plants put in now have time to get established before winter. This puts them in a strong position to flourish next spring. Choose your favourite bulbs in the garden centre before they sell out. Garsons’ bulbs come in bags of moistened compost to keep them fresh. Unpack ‘dry’ bulbs – narcissus, tulips and camassia, etc – and leave in a cool, airy place, out of reach of mice until you’re ready to plant them. Prioritise the woodlanders, such as the anemone, dog tooth’s violet and trillium. Although you can wait until November to put tulip bulbs in, you can plant earlier while the weather is kind and they’ll start growing.

Get your veg patch in good order for next year. If you don’t intend to spread manure, now is the time to sow green manure instead. These are the benefits: ● Green manure holds onto soil fertility that would otherwise be washed out by winter rains. ● Sowing a legume such as winter tares will fix nitrogen from the air. ● They prevent weed growth so you’ll have less work to do. ● They help improve the soil structure. In the spring you just dig over and allow them to rot down for a few weeks. One of the best green manures for winter growth is winter grazing rye. It continues to grow, albeit slowly, in cold weather – sow in early September and it should be around 15” tall in the spring, with lush foliage. ●

Make the most of September. Until next month, happy gardening! OTHER JOBS FOR SEPTEMBER ● Lawns will appreciate an organic, slow-release autumn feed but wait until the ground is moist and grass is growing. ● Cut the majority of foliage out of tomato vines to allow air and light to the fruit, prevent them rotting and promote ripening. ● Perennials that have already given you their best can be moved or divided. Only keep the youngest and strongest segments after division and replant in ground that’s been improved with organic matter and slow-release fertiliser.

n September, the meadow areas at Swanwick Lakes are full of the yellow flowers of Common Fleabane. It was thought that these plants, with their daisy-like flowers, would ward away flies from livestock – hence the name.

Look out, too, for late- flowering purple Knapweed, Bird’s Foot Trefoil and Tufted Vetch. It is this diverse mixture of flowering plants that makes meadows so special and such rich places for wildlife. Butterflies, bees and a host of other insects are attracted by the sweet scent of the nectar in the flowers. But the different grasses and flowers aren’t just a source of food; they also provide places to lay eggs and to shelter larvae or caterpillars through the winter months ahead. All over the reserve, trees and shrubs are heavy with ripening fruit and seeds. One of our most beautiful and often overlooked trees is the Field Maple. In September, this small tree is laden with pairs of winged seeds, often known to our younger visitors as ‘helicopters’. The seeds spin as they fall from the tree; an eye catching spectacle on a breezy day. As the days grow shorter and the temperature falls, the leaves of the Field Maple turn a rich golden yellow. The tree that has been relatively inconspicuous for most of the year becomes a striking example of the way autumn takes hold of the woodland.

Although the State Pension provides a limited income (currently £5,311 for a single person, per annum, based on a full NI record), it falls drastically short of providing a comfortable lifestyle. So how do we avoid poverty in retirement? First, decide how large a fund you will need. One method is to multiply your target retirement income by 25. So, if you think you’ll need £25,000 a year, aim for a fund of £625,000. Next, select the most appropriate investment vehicles to achieve your goal. Property, Investment Bonds and ISAs have all proved popular over recent years but don’t offer the same tax breaks or guarantees as a pension. Be sure to take advice from a financial professional. And remember, retirement funds are coming under increasing pressure from the fact that we’re living longer. In 1981, a person’s pension was expected to last them for 16 years. Now it needs to last 22 years*. So where £100,000 provided an annual income of £6,250 in 1981, £137,500 is required today to

achieve the same income. So what are your best income options? You can exchange your pension pot for a guaranteed annual income called an annuity. They are fixed for life but can be linked to inflation and provide your partner with an income when you pass away. The annuity rate offered by the life assurer is affected by the prevailing yield on gilts and corporate bonds. Annuity rates have recently been falling. Nevertheless, it is imperative to exercise the Open Market Option – your right to compare annuity rates in the market – before making a decision. An alternative to an annuity is income drawdown which seeks a superior return by investing in assets such as stocks and shares. With recent market volatility they have not performed well but bear in mind markets will, eventually, bounce back. n the 10th July the organisers of the Portsmouth Air Festival released this press release. ‘It is with regret that we have to announce the postponement of the 2012 Portsmouth Air Festival. The festival that had been planned for Saturday 18th August 2012 will now be held in 2013, with the initial dates of August 10th and 11th being provisionally targeted.’ Director of Communications Matt George recently sat down with Solent Life and explained why that decision had to be taken…

“Hindsight is an incredible thing,” Matt George explained. “If a couple of months ago we had been told that by waiting a year for the first Portsmouth Air Festival we would have a stronger, more entertaining and exciting event I would not have believed you! “I say that because in 2013 we now have an opportunity to take the Festival to a two day flying event as well as enhancing the Festival Village which now will reflect even greater links with both the military, including all three of the tri-services, and the local community; which has always been an important part of our plans.” We asked Matt to be candid and explain what caused the postponement of this year’s event, especially when it was so close to take-off? “There was no single factor; there was a combination of circumstances which changed all the plans within a period of just one month.” He replied. “Many reports have pinpointed the main reason being the lack of finance; but that was only brought about by all the other events which caused greater expenditure and therefore meant at very short

notice we needed further sponsorship which was just not available to us. “So rather than put on a second-rate show, or indeed risk cancellation even closer to the event which would have caused massive disruption and disappointment as well as affecting the local trade and those organisations taking part in all the displays, the organising team decided the best course of action was to postpone for just one year. Since making that decision we have discovered many things that we can do differently to improve the show as well as some new ideas that will enable us to make the 2013 Festival even more of an air and ground spectacular.” David Williams is Portsmouth City Council Chief Executive and he said of the decision; “It is a great shame that Portsmouth Air Festival has been postponed this year, but I can understand the difficulties faced in the current climate. We hope the organisers will be able to secure substantial sponsorship so the event can go ahead next year.” As with many of the organisations involved the Council are still right

events that have caused the postponement of the 2012 event why are the organisers so upbeat and determined? “The positive attitude we all have toward the 2013 event is because without it being an Olympic year there is less competition for sponsorship, without a Farnborough Air Show next year the show calendar is less crowded, meaning more unique aircraft and air displays will become available. “Plus on the ground we have many new ideas for the Festival Village, the entertainment and onground attractions.” He continued. “We have been able to figure out that some of the things that were causing the expenditure increase were actually surplus to requirements and were also things that did not enhance the experience for the public. “If you like; as organisers we are now on a straight road which is far easier for us to navigate to not only next year’s Festival but also future years’ events.” Matt added.

“It is a strange thing but this postponement has actually allowed us to secure a long term future for what will still be one of the most thrilling spectacles in the south of England. This is an opportunity to work on something truly unique for the region and its people; in the end this is something that I and the rest of the team will put all our passion and dedication into which when we come out of the other end it will be with a great feeling of pride for what we, and all our supporters, have achieved. Especially as many groups and companies such as Lockheed Martin as well as local businesses and organisations have not only stuck with us but are offering positive encouragement for us to move forward. “More importantly our selected charities, and the MOD, have openly voiced their support; and every single display team have pledged to return for next year and an even bigger and better Portsmouth Air Festival. ●

The day began with coffee and pastries which was swiftly followed by a wine tasting session. The ladies were then treated to massages and beauty treatments courtesy of Holistic Hideaway of Lyndhurst before a summer buffet lunch. The afternoon kicked off with David Perry from The Breeze Breakfast hosting competitions which included Best Dressed Lady, Best Hat, Best Dressed Couple and Lady of Ladies Day. Fundraising Success for Jubilee Sailing Trust

Southampton-based public relations consultancy, Grayling has raised £1,820 for their ‘Charity of the Year’, the Jubilee Sailing Trust. Their fundraising efforts began with the Bupa 10K in May when Grayling’s Hannah Keddie and Julie Dean ran the streets of London on one of the hottest days of the year to raise over a thousand pounds. Then it was all hands on deck in July for a 100m abseil down the side of Portsmouth’s Spinnaker Tower. girl power At this year’s Olympics our women excelled, especially on the water, and yet in so many sports women might be seen as almost second rate after the macho men get in the way and garner the media coverage. That was not the case during this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week when Ladies Day took over; it may have had its more lady-like side when a rib met the boats and handed out Lanson champagne and Liz Earle beauty products from two of the sponsors, but when the cannon roared from the front of the Royal Yacht Squadron, the women fought it out on equal terms with the men! All the candidates for the award have been nominated by fellow sailors.” Out on the water it was a battle of the fittest, the fastest and the best, but in the Talisker’s Boathouse it was about commitment to both sailing and women in the sport; about women and their determination to succeed in a male dominated world. Presenting the awards was Shirley Robertson, one of our double gold medal Olympians from Beijing, who has had a busy schedule presenting much of the sailing coverage for both the BBC and CNN throughout our 2012 games. The winner of the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week Ladies Day Trophy, was a tough choice, but eventually chosen from a worthy batch of nominees, was Annie O’Sullivan. Annie was chosen as winner for her selfless contribution to women in sailing. She set up the charter

company Girlsforsail in 1999 with the aim of encouraging more women to take up sailing. This passion for getting more women into yacht racing was inspired by her personal difficult experiences of trying to become accepted in a male dominated environment. Things have changed a lot over the last decade and at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, where she regularly competes, the number of female skippers has increased by 150%. Annie O’Sullivan continues to support women with the aim of getting women of all ages sailing safely while having maximum fun. rowed the Atlantic as part of an all girl team but also smashed several records on the way while showing the men how to do it. These champion women are just the tip of a sporting iceberg, here in the UK we have women excelling in just about every sporting field, and beating the men at their own game, but at least here on the coast when it comes to water sports individuals are being noted for their achievements and companies are getting behind our women sailors in a positive and encouraging way. A TASTY TREAT Prior to the awarding of the Ladies Day prizes, Solent Life were invited to take part in a Talisker’s tasting session, which became one of the strangest taste sessions of any product. TALISKER is the only single malt Scotch whisky rugged enough to call the Isle of Skye its home with the Talisker distillery a picturesque destination for thousands of sailors each year. Following a taster session in their Boathouse in Cowes Yacht Haven we were taken down to a pontoon on the marina for a further surprise. We arrived at the same time as portions of fish and chips and we were told to sprinkle sea salt onto the paper-wrapped feast. Then we were each given a dram of Talisker 10 Year Old single malt, and because of its black peppery flavour instructed to drizzle it on our fish – although the result was amazing and enhanced the flavours of fish and batter, I think I will keep my malt whisky in the glass in future; far too nice to be pouring over fishy feasts! www.facebook.com/talisker

This amazing exhibition of wildlife art and sculptures has previously been held at Marwell Zoo and visitors had to pay entry to the park to get to the exhibition. This year at the new venue of Rookesbury Park on the outskirts of Wickham, entry is free ensuring everyone can get to see the exciting and incredible talents of wildlife artists from around the world. The exposition includes the largest annual display of paintings and sculptures in Europe with over 700 stunning exhibits on display by approximately 200 artists and sculptors, together with an Art Market on the Friday evening. The event this year will also host the ‘BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year’ Awards 2012 and awards will be presented on the opening night – the overall winner will enjoy a safari in Botswana in October. As well as the work on display, each day there will be the opportunity to meet many of the artists and sculptors, several of whom will be demonstrating their skills on site and displaying additional artwork, cards, prints and photographs all of which will be for sale.

Music, Comedy, Events & TheatreChildren TUDOR STREETS The Michaelmas Fair in Southampton sees the oldest part of the city transformed into a Tudor festival of workshops, living fair, historical reenactments, storytelling, townsfolk and walks. The Michaelmas Fair is the busiest weekend of the Tudor Revels project - An exciting programme of events and activities based on the heritage, archives and real lives of Southampton’s Tudor period. Bugle Street, St Michael’s Square and the surrounding area of Southampton’s old town will be packed full of Tudor life, giving a real glimpse into what the town was like at the time. Michaelmas is the feast of Saint Michael on 29th September. Because it falls near the equinox, it was associated with the beginning of autumn and the shortening of days. In the Tudor period, it was celebrated as a Holy Day of Obligation and a traditional meal for the day would include goose and a special cake called a St Michael’s bannock. A host of familiar names and faces from a wide variety of motor sport disciplines are due to be in action at Goodwood, including Formula One stars, rally winners, endurance racing champions, tin top

tearaways and top bikers; often competing in, and on, the most unlikely of machines. With an average age of eight years old, the competitors will pedal a short circuit around the main Goodwood grid/pit lane (c.220 yards; a tenth of the overall Goodwood circuit), with a Le Mans-style running start, and a chicane on the start/finish straight. Each competitor will wear period overalls and a 1950s-style crash helmet. When not racing, the J40s will be parked in their own dedicated half-scale period wooden paddock shelters.
