AUGUST 2012

As I write this month’s welcome the sun is out, the rain has disappeared and hopefully summer is here at last. The Olympics have begun and the nation hopes it will be an event full of medals for our athletes. With that in mind we chat with local four-time Olympian and Silver Medal winner Pete Waterfield who will be in the pool with fellow diver Tom Daley trying to win Gold for Britain in the Synchronised Diving. Sadly the Air Festival has been forced to postpone until next August through a number of different influences and competing demands. Solent Life will be continuing to provide support as a media partner and bring you an ongoing series of features throughout the coming year. As this August issue closed and went to print, we met with the organisers and discussed the future. This interview, highlighting the massive ongoing support they are receiving and what we can look forward to next year, will be in our September issue. In this Solent Life we visit a Romsey church that is now a gallery exhibiting the work of local artists; this year has seen many changes to the MOT, so we have recruited the owner of a local garage to explain the differences and we also take a look at the world’s best sailing regatta, Cowes Week, through the eyes of the non-sailors and see what is happening in Cowes, for those of us who prefer to stay on dry land. Finally as the kids already begin to get bored, everyone here at Solent Life hope you all have a wonderful, warm and sunny summer holiday, but most of all we hope you have a safe one. | MANAGING EDITOR

the walk

from

garden

to shore words & images by david rose-massom

I

t was the walk in the first ever issue of Solent Life, and many years later we revisited during the autumn months. Seven years after that first walk Solent Life now has many new readers in new areas and they have not yet been introduced to the joys of walking Holly Hill. With the deluges of the spring weather it has been hard to find walks that are passable and without footpaths that are ankle deep in mud; so we have returned to an old favourite that not only has firm footing but the pathways are suitable for the less able-bodied walker or wheelchair user. The footpath begins through an ornate metal entrance with a holly leaf arch and ivy leaf gate. Down an easy slope and past a pond, that later in the year will be buzzing with dragonflies, visitors arrive at a series of ponds and waterfalls. Wildfowl play, breed and preen on the water’s surface while just below them

golden carp swim lazily amongst the lily pads. Surrounding the wet stuff is a host of plant life, and not just native varieties either, there are also plenty of exotic plants. Holly Hill is a beautiful area which was formerly the gardens of Holly Hill Mansion. Now owned by Fareham Borough Council it is spread over 70 acres of woodland, with more than 5 acres of lakes and with footpaths that conclude on the banks of the River Hamble; where there are picturesque views across the river. As you explore the park the scene alters from amazing Victorian landscaped gardens with lakes, islands, waterfalls, many exotic trees and flowers to an area of hazel and alder coppice with large

oak trees teeming with wildlife. Holly Hill is being carefully conserved and preserved for the future. Although essentially a woodland park, it consists of some unique landscape features having developed since the 1870’s together with a collection of specimen trees around the lake area, some of which are still present in the park today. From 1881 to 1893 extensive waterfalls, lakes, streams, and grotto were created with ‘Pulhamite’ stone; an artificial rock made from Portland Stone, cement and rubble moulded to form the natural looking hard landscaping. Fareham Borough Council purchased the park in 1954, and with help from the Friends of Holly Hill, have managed it superbly ever since. One new addition on the lakeside, since my last visit, is the transformation of a damaged tree which has been carved into a woodland ‘totem’ pole topped by a slender heron complete with captured fish in its long bill.

Wooden and metal bridges cross the waterways as they change from level to level and a boardwalk curves alongside one of the lakes. As the lakes are left behind the water continues via a babbling brook and just above the trickling stream the footpath enters dense woodland. Overhead dark grey clouds interrupt what little sunlight gets through the thick overhead canopy of leaves and down to the woodland floor; it is natures own version of a psychedelic light show. A recently fallen oak tree now forms a natural archway over the path; ivy still clinging to its bark. It seems strange that a mighty oak should be brought down like that, as they always give the impression of being great, powerful and permanent, but in nature anything can succumb to the strength of the wind. In the midst of the woods stands a tall cedar, or it may

even be redwood, and its trunk is littered with nesting holes which have been pecked into the soft body of the tree. Standing there waiting to see if a woodpecker, tit, or even squirrel, emerged from the holes I was entertained by a symphony of sound made up of wood winds humming through the tree tops and a variety of bird song – delightful! The footpath becomes a short boardwalk which ends at a wooden bridge; here Holly Hill comes to an end and the nature reserve of Wendleholme begins. The route from here is much softer and quite muddy in places as well as undulating and so perhaps is not suitable for those with trouble walking or in wheelchairs. A few hundred yards further along this pathway, a doorway of light sits at the end of a tree tunnel. Once through this natural portal, it opens out into an area of scrubland with purple headed

thistles growing tall above the long grasses. The view across the way is a brief glimpse of the River Hamble and its rows of moored pleasure boats. A few paces further on and almost without fanfare, walkers are stood on the banks of this broad and enchanting river. The joining point of path and river is midway between Warsash and Swanwick and if you turn left and walk on for around 100 yards you will arrive at the skeleton of an old wooden boat. If you are lucky, at certain times in the rise and fall of the tide a kingfisher comes and fishes in the pool that is formed in between the wooden ribs of the old boat. It is a wonderful sight to watch this colourful hunter dart in and out of the water, occasionally with a small silver fishy, treat in its beak. A dozen or so egrets fed while a lone heron watched them from the rushes and a redbeaked oystercatcher bathed in

the shallows. There is always a mass of wildlife to watch along the banks of the river. As I turned to head back a lone cormorant flew swiftly with the wind and headed down river just a foot or two above the water’s surface. The tide had turned and was rolling back into the inlet, large grey and angry clouds rolled across the sky blocking off more of the sun and sadly it was a signal for the time to head back through the nature reserve, back into the delights of Holly Hill; a wonderful way to spend two or three hours in beautiful surroundings.  l

Fanfiction words by lewis aspinall

A

s Wizards and Vampires rekindle, the magic

gets reborn. Back from the dead and ready to bite – the fictional world has a new lease of life.

The internet is now the place to read more adventures about your favourite books and characters, this time not written by the original author but by passionate fans and wannabe writers who use their own imagination to take these characters to another level creating different beginnings and endings along with more adventures. This new craze is known as Fanfiction. Did you know that if you Google ‘Fanfiction’ thousands of online stories appear for your enjoyment? These stories are free and cover many different genres for all ages just choose your favourite book and you enter a world of the ‘unknown’ author’s imagination. Book lovers all over the world have the opportunity to write a story within a story – the characters are already household names, people know and love them; but you get to decide what happens to them next. Such books as Harry Potter, Twilight and Sherlock Holmes are Fanfiction favourites with people writing new exciting storylines. Taking certain characters from fictional books and films and then recreating them allows the Fanfiction writer to elaborate more into the more personal aspects of the character that the original author did not explore. This offers the reader a whole new experience such as taking Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger out of their wizarding robes and the grounds of Hogwarts School,

mixing it up and placing them into Sherlock Holmes’s Baker Street. The scenarios are endless. Fanfiction has now become a massive online phenomenon giving hundreds of thousands of surfer’s the links to read these stories for free from budding authors all around the globe. However, although Fanfiction is very popular and is having massive success all around the world it is still unknown to mainstream audiences. Anyone can create a story and post it online, which does offer the question is this legal, and is anyone making money from it? The simple answer is no. The original author will always own the copyright on their characters and settings not the Fanfiction writer’s who currently have no financial gain. The main advantage is that it enables the unknown writer to get their story out there for others to enjoy, letting their imagination run riot with the characters they love, or even hate. There are some who do not encourage fanfiction, believing that the unknown author taking the real authors’ characters, settings and events and altering them, is making the original story lack the buzz that made them famous in the first instance. These books were loved and became best sellers because of the storylines and characters as they were originally conceived – why

change something when it works? The flip side of this is that fanfiction keeps the books alive. Some authors such as J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series of books has said that she likes the idea of Fanfiction and she is happy that fans are taking the characters they love and making their own stories. Fanfiction is quickly growing on the internet drawing more people, both readers and writers in every day. How often have you read a book or sat and watched a film for two hours and been disappointed with the ending or thought to yourself what if this had happened, or that character’s personality was slightly different or imagined a different situation or even the whole story line? We can often create a whole new scenario in our own heads. The most popular Fanfiction stories are those from trilogy books such as Twilight, or the Harry Potter series as fans have grown up with the characters and feel that they know them on a personal level so don’t want to let go of the characters they love and don’t want the stories to end, because of this it simplifies the writing of their own stories. Whether you’re a fan of Fanfiction or not, its popularity will grow encouraging young and old alike to not only read more but to write more, which in a world where technology is in the foreground and the old days of pen and paper are almost a thing of the past, surely it has to be a positive sign that new, would be authors are putting their imagination to work over the internet.  l

words by david rose-massom

he story of the Romsey Art Group is unique in the realms of amateur art societies; and three of its major dates all happened in one year, 1963. From an informal exhibition in the May of ‘63 it was proposed that a more formal society be formed and that was achieved th by the 14 of June that same year. The first true Society showing of the members’ works was held at the Dolphin Hotel, now Bradbeers department store, in Romsey’s Corn Market on 5th December.

A further unique aspect of this member driven society is their permanent home; something many societies can only dream of. Just three years after their inception the opportunity arose to lease a disused church in the tiny hamlet of Lee just a few miles from the centre of Romsey. It was originally built on the Broadlands Estate by Lord Palmerston in 1882, it had been dedicated but never consecrated as a church, but prior to the art society taking it over it had fallen into disuse apart from somewhere to store hay bales and some farm equipment. It took an incredible amount of cleaning and preparation before it could become a suitable venue for an art gallery and the members took on that task with great energy and so it was the rejuvenated building took on its new guise and was opened by its benefactor and then Society President, Lord Louis Mountbatten on the 8th of June 1967. The now named Mountbatten Gallery became an instant success and over the years has been improved and added to with the North Gallery extension. This

extra exhibition space was funded and built by the membership. In November of 1986 the old church and gallery was declared a building of special architectural and historic interest and given a Grade I listing. The Romsey Art Group has a membership of 300 artists covering all genres of art and they encourage members of all skill levels from complete beginner to amateur, semi-professional and professional exponents. Under their current President, Lady Brabourne, they hold two major exhibitions each year, the spring, traditionally in May, and the upcoming Autumn Exhibition in October. Solent Life took a drive in the countryside and visited the charming gallery, which has lost none of its original features, and met with one of the leading members Jenny Morgan. We began talking as we gazed upon an image of US President Barack Obama, which had been produced brilliantly, by Jenny, using nothing but magazine ‘scraps’ of paper. “I have become the local recycling centre,” she said, “This image took

an age to produce but it is a format I enjoy, a previous subject was John Lennon which took six months to produce and ended up being exhibited alongside some of Lennon’s own work.” Jenny is one of the Group’s professional artists and she admitted that with two horses and two cars to support she had to become fairly successful. “It is not an easy life being an artist, I have to work hard every day from at least 10am till 4pm and working from home an artist is always ‘at work’!” This was not a case of self promotion by Jenny but a way of describing the effort and input by every artist within the Romsey Art Group. We strolled around the gallery, where a smaller than usual exhibition was being held in celebration of the Jubilee and she pointed out the work of many of the Group’s passionate artists. “Our Group is not about who is best or most successful, we have a lot of people who just get a great deal of pleasure from their art. They join the Group because

there is this support as well as a good programme of events and workshops.” Jenny added. “We have monthly demonstrations, pottery and painting classes and the two major annual exhibitions, as well as some smaller ones. The May and October shows are general exhibitions about whatever subject the artist wishes to portray, no matter what level of skill they have. The only real criteria, really, is that the piece is a complete work of art and that it is properly framed. So there is room for everyone who is a member of our Group!” As we spoke we passed some work that was staggering in complexity and skill and others that just made the viewer smile. That said, with works of art that would grace any home wall on sale for as little as £25, it is a great opportunity to buy an original picture. Jenny commented; “It probably cost the artist more to get it framed than they will earn from the painting but they get the joy of having sold a piece of work.” Jenny, like all of the

membership, is rightly proud of their countryside venue. “When the church was first put in our care it was full of straw and kept just as a farm outbuilding with no power or water. We have added the utilities, as well as built the extension, and now it is a wonderful exhibition space that we are all proud of. “We have 300 members, the membership is currently full, and it seems that once you are in the Romsey Art Group, you are in for life,” she said as we took a chair in the middle of some wonderful works of art that all had been produced with passion and commitment. “We have few formal classes and workshops, as most of the teaching and passing on of experience is from the membership themselves. “Being an artist can be a very lonely and solitary thing but being a part of a Group such as ours it becomes something inspirational.”  l

Summer holidays are upon us and it’s a time of year when we all take many photos. But once we’re home they either end up in a drawer, photo album – or more likely on your computer – never to be looked at again! Change that by having your favourite images put on canvas. Choose a selection of around 6–8 of your favourite images that work well together and print them onto small canvases all the same size. Hung together in a group gives a great display and a nice “aidemémoire”. Alternatively, choose maybe three canvases to be mounted, with space between each one, and then framed to produce a larger piece of art. As we print canvases to any size you require, you are not restricted by pre-determined sizes and therefore can be as creative as you like with your display. We also double varnish all canvases for extra durability as well as taping and stringing – and of course the image wraps around the side of the canvas too.

The ROMSEY ART GROUP is a group of painters, potters and wood carvers from in and around Romsey in the beautiful Test Valley. With a membership of 300 including both amateur and professional artists they are fortunate in leasing their own building, the Mountbatten Gallery, serving as a meeting place for demonstrations, courses, open studios and exhibitions. Go to www.romseyartgroup. hampshire.org.uk for more details and some images of their member’s work. Autumn exhibition is Sept 29th – Oct 13th at the Mountbatten Gallery, Lee. sleep words by fiona cooke

H

ands up! Who, at some point in their lives, has woken themselves up with a particularly loud snore, looked around to check no one else heard and then drifted back

to sleep?

I’m hoping most of us have and I am not alone that. Luckily this is usually nothing to worry about if it only happens occasionally. However for some people snoring and waking frequently can be the symptoms of a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). I talked to Liz Walker, the Lead Nurse for Sleep and Ventilation in the Respiratory Outpatients Department at QA Hospital. She defines Obstructive Sleep Apnoea as the cessation of breathing, or abnormally low breathing during sleep. The stopping of airflow is generally due to the collapse of the upper airway due to lack of muscle tone; it only occurs at night as during the day we have sufficient muscle tone to keep the airway open. Liz continues “If you stop breathing in your sleep the brain is stimulated to awaken in order to start breathing again. Often you are not aware that you are awakening. If it happens frequently then you are constantly waking throughout the night and you are likely to suffer from extreme sleepiness during the day.” Apnoeas are where the breathing stops completely for more than 10 seconds and hypopnoeas are episodes of shallow breathing or abnormally low respiratory rates. Both are associated with a drop in oxygen levels. The Apnoea Hypopnoea Index (AHI) is the number of either events happening each hour added together to assess the severity of the Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Up to 5 an hour is normal and nothing to be concerned about. 5 to 15 is mild OSA, 15 to 30 moderate and over 30 is classed as severe Obstructive Sleep Apnoea. Liz treats one patient who reaches 135 an hour; she takes two or three breaths, and then stops! Obesity is the main reason for the condition; having a large neck and a lot of

fatty tissue, which the relaxed muscles cannot support. Smoking and high alcohol intake increases the risk. It can also be caused by having nasal polyps, a low or small bottom jaw, or having overly large tonsils or adenoid problems; which generally affect children. The main symptoms include snoring, a partner witnessing the breathing stopping during sleep, waking with a feeling of choking and being very sleepy. This sleepiness can cause drifting off in front of the T.V. or during inactive times, but as it worsens it can lead to falling asleep whilst eating or mid conversation or more seriously whilst driving. Untreated sleep apnoea sufferers are seven times more likely to have a car crash. Nocturia (needing to go to the toilet at night) and impotence can also be a problem; however the two symptoms of snoring and day time sleepiness are the best indicators of the condition. The snoring and sleep apnoea can also have a huge impact on relationships and it is often the partner that encourages the sufferer to seek help. The diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is normally made after a sleep study is carried out at home. After the G.P. referral Liz and her team will issue the patient with a sleep recorder which measures oxygen levels, air flow, heart rate and the body’s position – whether the patient is lying on their back or side. The measurements are recorded in a box which is strapped around the waist. On completion of the study the data card is downloaded, analysed and the severity of the condition discovered. In some cases the patient may have positional Obstructive Sleep Apnoea, where they only have the problem if lying on their back. This is remedied with the scientific use of a tennis ball strapped to the back which unsurprisingly encourages the patient to lie on their side!

Sleep Apnoea is generally treated with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure – or CPAP – which is something of a mouthful and therefore it is appropriate that it is delivered via a mask. Air blows through the mask from a machine and this airflow splints the airway open. Liz says “Patients describe it as similar to having one’s head out of a train window. As you can imagine wearing the mask is not always easy and patients can need quite a lot of support.” Those with severe or moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea will need to use the machine for the rest of their lives, unless something changes, such as weight loss. Those with mild Obstructive Sleep Apnoea have a trial of CPAP for a month to see if it has an effect – if there is no difference then it may be that the daytime sleepiness is due to another condition. A possible alternative for people with mild or moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnoea is a Mandible Advancement Device (another mouthful!) which is like a gum shield that is used to bring the jaw forward and open up the airway at the back of the throat. As uncomfortable as these treatments may seem they have a miraculous effect. The apnoeas, the snoring, the daytime naps, the frequent trips to the toilet all stop and the patient wakes up feeling refreshed after sleeping all night, sometimes for the first time in years. Liz happily says that patients tell her the treatment is life changing and she is on a mission to treat everyone in the area who suffers from the condition. After all who doesn’t feel better after a good night’s sleep?  l For further information: The Sleep Apnoea Trust Association. photography PHOTOGRAPHY BY HARRY ALLEN

child’s play words by david rose-massom

M

onth on month here at Solent Life we have been amazed at the quality of images from our younger photographers; maybe envious would be a better description because some of the work has been outstanding. There is only one way that these young artists began and that was when someone gave them a camera. My grandson, now 4½, has been using my Canon camera for the last 18 months or so. It began by just placing the camera on my knee so he could point it in the right direction without carrying the weight and he would just press the shutter button; enjoying the fast click, click, click of the shutter. Now when he sees a scene he likes the look of, and he does have a good eye, he asks for my camera, braces himself, aims through the viewfinder, frames the image using the zoom lens and then fires just one frame, checking the digital image on the camera’s screen and then re-shooting if he is not happy with the image. Or as he puts it, “I have not got the shot yet Granddad!” He will then re-shoot until he has the image he likes. Now he is no David Bailey yet, but he enjoys recording the scenes he sees when we go out for our walks and of course it helps that I encourage him. The reason for this personal little story is that everyone has to start somewhere; Harry now has his own digital camera, which when he gets bored with taking pictures plays games, but it cost less than £30, a small price to pay to get him started. With the summer holidays upon us and vacation time arriving it is a good way of occupying your young ones by getting them to use inexpensive digital cameras and at the end of the day downloading the images onto your computer and seeing what they have achieved and maybe picking the shot of the day, print off a copy and then build a montage of images which they can then enjoy as an aide memoir of their summer holiday.  l

> TAMING OF THE SHREW 26th SEPTEMBER– 6th OCTOBER

Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will have you laugh out loud in the wonderful setting of Syracuse also known as The Great Barn in Titchfield!

Set in 16th century Italy ‘The Taming of the Shrew’ is probably Shakespeare’s most knockabout and definitely not politically correct comedy. The beautiful Bianca wants to get married but her father won’t let her marry until her elder sister Katherine is married first. It’s a comedy in which the sparks fly!

delightfully different words by director sean foley

T

he hilarious new stage version of The Ladykillers written by Graham Linehan (who wrote the classic Father Ted), comes to The Mayflower in October. The show stars Michele Dotrice (Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em), Shaun Williamson (Extras and EastEnders) and Clive Mantle (Casualty and The Vicar of Dibley). Director of the show Sean Foley gave us an insight into the creation of the original. When the distributors of the 1955 film The Ladykillers were trying to come up with a tagline to describe it to its potential audience, they confronted a huge problem. It was undoubtedly a hilarious comedy, but one that also thrilled with its comic violence. It was definitely a hardnosed heist story, but one with moments of pure slapstick. It was a bit ‘theatrical’, and possibly even, God forbid, ‘arty’, with its expressionistic lighting, and larger than life characters, but was it okay to laugh at and sympathise with; the criminals on screen? They were stumped. How had such an exciting, unusual, but utterly successful, collision of elements come about? One night, William Rose, an American born scriptwriter – who joined the Canadian forces during the Second World War, married an English girl, and decided to stay in Britain after the war; had had a dream...

32…

.co.uk • AUGUST 2012

He woke up with an idea that was already complete in his head. In the dream, a gang of criminals commit a successful robbery while living in a house belonging to a little old lady. Belatedly, she discovers their crime. A sweetly innocent and highly moral soul, she insists they go to the police and give themselves up. Gradually the five men realise that to escape, they will have to kill her. But, villainous as they are, will they have the wickedness necessary to murder such a benign and helpless figure? His dream had the amazing power and timelessness of a fable. It was a story that dealt with good and evil in a playful way. A tale that could make you laugh and shiver at the same time. Alexander Mackendrick, an American born Scot, and one of Britain’s greatest ever film directors, encouraged Rose to turn his tale in to

Photography by Shaun Webb

a film script. The two of them, alongside a very gifted creative team, worked flat out to turn this story into that singularly British popular piece of entertainment: an Ealing Comedy. But the very best comedy and entertainment - and their film belongs in this category – is always underpinned by something which can tickle the audience on a deeper level. Mackendrick has written himself about how, only after the film had been completed, did he and Bill Rose realise its theme. The delicious collision of dream, fable, comedy, morality play, expressionistic art, slapstick, and farce that they had put together, amounted to a wonderful ironic joke about the state of England. If we look at the characters of The Ladykillers, they are a composite cartoon of Britain’s corruption: the Major, a conman, is a caricature of Britain’s decadent and ineffectual ruling class;

One Round is representative of the used, brutalised masses; Harry is the worthless younger generation; Louis, the dangerously unassimilated foreigner; and Marcus embodies the collapse of moral and intellectual leadership. It is undoubtedly a wonderfully ironic joke that still applies today. As is the ideal of Britannia – the nation itself – represented as a tiny sweet old lady, who shares the name of a Nineteenth century idealist (William Wilberforce), and lives in a shabby, structurally unsound house, surrounded with memories of when Britain’s navy ruled the world. Whether post war, post Empire, or post recession; this story and these characters, still have a deep hold on our funny bone. But who wants to hear about ‘depth’, ‘themes’, and ‘structure’? (Save it for the programme notes...!). What we all really want is jokes to laugh

at, characters to love or hate, a story to grip, and a shiver down the spine. God damn it, we want entertainment! The people who made ‘The Ladykillers’ knew this better than most, and they didn’t disappoint. Their dedication to entertain has enabled the film to become part of the culture, and William Rose’s unconscious imagination is with us still. And now, his characters will live again, but in a new way... What was a dream, became a story. This story was a fable, and was turned into a film. That ‘classic’ film has now inspired a new group of people to create a play. But, just as the film itself contains so many extraordinarily blended elements, this ‘play’ does to. That blend is new. In fact, as we all realised very early on, to re-create The Ladykillers for the stage, it could be no other way: it was only by bringing new ideas – new jokes, new thrills, new versions of

these classic characters to life – that we could have stayed true to the original work. But there’s still the same problem to confront. What do you call this concoction, this new blend; A Play? A Comedy? A Thriller? A Heist Gone Wrong? A Fable with Laughs? A Laugh with A Fable? A Chiller? A Good Night Out? A Bad Night In? A Fun Night In And Out?... I think we should give up. Just as the original creators of this wonderful comedy got there first sixty odd years ago, so did the original writers of the tag-line. Faced with insuperable odds – with jokes, with ‘themes’, and with this truly original mix of genres – they came up with a phrase that I’d happily embrace to this day... ‘The Ladykillers – A Delightfully Different Entertainment!’  l

powerfully elegant words by dave hill & janet grimm

S His summary: It appears like a high initial ticket price, however it also seems like it costs peanuts to run. Loads of performance, comfort and luxury; a most worthy member of the elite high-end coupe club.

34…

ince its launch, the Solent Life website has featured the unveiling of BMW’s latest creation; the new 640 Gran Coupe and we have been eagerly waiting to lay our hands on it; and see if it was as good as it looked.

Our test car was the 640d M Sport version complete with its optional 20inch wheels – they really are huge, but this is a big car so it does look good with them. The first impressions when approaching the car is that it is a really big car – at well over 16 feet long and getting on for seven feet wide, this is no Mini. This new model has been stretched by over four inches from the previous version and the wheelbase by even more. This makes room for an additional two doors at the rear and some useable rear accommodation. With its sleek, low lines, this coupe styling, again, because of its sheer size, shouldn’t be dismissed it as just a 2+2; there is plenty of space for four. With an entry price approaching £70,000, a buyer will be expecting something special and this BMW doesn’t disappoint. From the moment you step into the

.co.uk • AUGUST 2012

car, it has the requisite sumptuousness with plenty of beautifully finished leather and, on our test car, brushed aluminium trim. The seats, as always with BMW, are beautifully comfortable (they really do seem to have got that off pat) with power adjustment and memory on the front ‘sport’ seats. Now, I drive a car of these proportions and therefore I am very familiar with threading a big heavy car through busy streets and so was ready for a weighty handful. Wasn’t I in for a surprise! With the clever use of plastics, the development of body panels and major structural chassis and suspension parts in aluminium, this is not such a heavy car as it might appear. In fact, it is over half a ton lighter than my own car, so I was not as prepared as I thought. I said earlier that this was no mini – however, for a car with these proportions I was amazed at its mini-like agility and responsiveness

to steering inputs. With the adaptive shock absorber system that changes according to driving style and road surfaces, this isn’t the expected handful to drive, but comfortable, accurate and really enjoyable. The Sports steering wheel with it numerous controls for radio, telephone, cruise control and various mode selections, is relaxing to use. It is fully adjustable by a small stalk that operates the power adjustments in all directions – it even powers up when the engine is switched off to facilitate easier exit and entry. The car is well equipped with so many different entertainment features and driver aids that it doesn’t feel lacking in any way in standard form. However, this can be complimented by many optional additional features to customise exactly to your needs and wants, I must say though, that the options list is very enticing. The 3.0 Litre turbo diesel power unit produces 313 BHP with a massive 650 Nm of torque and is as smooth a diesel engine as I have driven. Quietly and smoothly it delivers its power effortlessly. Coupled with the ultra smooth automatic 8 speed gearbox, complete with paddles behind the steering wheel, the whole power train provides seamless power evenly across the performance range and leaves a driver in no doubt that this is indeed a quality car. In common with the other BMWs that we have tested, the 640d was equipped with the driving performance options with Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport plus modes available. Whilst generally impressed with the range of ‘personalities’ that can be selected and the balance of suspension settings, throttle responses and other variables that are delivered with each of the different settings, I have to say that with the power, gearbox and suspension combination on this car, each of the modes has a marked difference. Everything from easy going and undemanding in Eco pro, to aggressive high performance in sport plus. In other models I have felt perhaps the Eco mode was too restrained and may not have used it – however, in this model, the engine and gearbox made the Eco plus mode relaxed and an easy car to drive. I could actually see

myself using this mode most of the time, selecting others when the fancy took me. There is another reason why the Eco plus mode is attractive. With this sort of power and performance, one might expect frequent visits to the petrol station, but just let me share with you the fuel consumption figures. In an urban cycle 40.9 – 41.5mpg; Extra urban 57.6mpg; Combined 49.6 – 50.4mpg. A car with this size and performance, this is amazing. I mentioned performance and so there is perhaps a need to qualify that. A supercar is generally accepted as one that can attain high speed and accelerate to 60mph in 5 seconds or less. The 640d M Sport is limited to 155mph top speed and will accelerate to 62mph in just 5.4 seconds. Now that isn’t far off supercar status – and to achieve something getting on for 60 mpg – yes, that’s pretty amazing in my book.  l  I am used to driving big German cars and have even been known to drive a couple of big English ones, but this was the biggest yet! The BMW 640d is enormous outside and in. As you climb inside and settle into the ultra comfortable and fully adjustable driver’s seat it is not difficult to imagine yourself sinking into a favourite armchair; the passenger seat and spacious rear seat complete the three piece suite effect. So spacious is the seating in this car that I actually felt quite small in the driver’s chair; and there are few who could describe me as that! This car is incredibly easy to drive, light and responsive to the touch. You receive a sensation through the steering wheel as if you can ‘feel’ the road. This is more familiar in a ‘sports’ car, and was not something that I expected in this ‘insulated from the outside world’ luxury car. Even edging out of a narrow lane is made safe by the camera set into the front bumper and controlled by a switch in the central console and which shows approaching vehicles despite the, seemingly, runway length of this car’s bonnet. Popping into cruise control and selecting comfort mode and cruising down the

motorway it was not too much of a leap of the imagination to imagine myself sitting in my armchair ready to watch my favourite soap on the television-like on board information screen, instead of concentrating on driving. The 640d comfortably holds the whole family with plenty of legroom and space for all and the capacious boot easily holds the luggage for five holiday makers and the holiday shopping too. The diesel engine although big and powerful enough to get anywhere swiftly also delivers plenty of miles to the gallon meaning that this is a great car to take on a touring holiday. The 640d, in common with other BMWs that we have tested, has several different driving modes. In this car each has its own unique characteristics. My favourite here is the Sports mode. Sports Plus feels a little uncontrollable for me personally as I enjoy the safety of traction control. Comfort and Sport are great for touring and motorway driving. Eco pro, although an attractive option because of the fuel saving felt a little like a dog pulling on a lead; pent up power waiting to be given its freedom. This is by no means a criticism – just a personal observation. I really enjoyed driving this car. I loved the 320d we drove a few months ago and I loved this, its big brother, even more!  l Her Summary: A great car – especially for a holiday. I’ve got a couple of weeks off soon; please Scotthall can I have one?!!

The car tested was a BMW 640d M Sport. OTR price £68,565 and was kindly provided to us by Scotthall Hampshire For more information: Scotthall, Chestnut Avenue, Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh, SO53 3YU 023 8068 9800 | www.scotthall.co.uk

safety first words by david rose-massom

S

ince the first day of the year new MOT rules and testing procedures have been phased in, leaving many motorists wondering, is it going to cost them more money and what it is exactly they are paying for?

Solent Life spoke to garage proprietor Phil Upshall of Titchfield Motor Works. “The changes have been brought about through two different directions, one is our own Government tightening up on emission controls and the second with the EU and ongoing safety regulations,” he explained. The MOT test has become more technical, one addition for example is the checking of, what Phil refers to, as the ‘worry’ lights. “The ABS warning light on your dashboard display has always been checked but now other dashboard indicator lights are being examined so that all lights linked to safety features must be working properly.” Phil continued. “A genuine concern within the industry is that in the current economic climate many drivers are saving money by delaying their car maintenance and of course that becomes detrimental to safety. “Something we have increasingly noticed is that it is not the boy-racer who is ignoring his car, in fact they seem to take great care of them; but it is mostly family cars that are being ignored when it comes to servicing and repair costs. It is frightening when we see DVD players fitted to keep the children happy in a car with illegal tyres!” Phil went on to explain that good car maintenance is always essential. “Regular

servicing and checks will eventually save you money. Greater care needs to be taken, with this poor summer and all the rain, even tyres that are borderline cease to be efficient. “The modern car is a complex machine controlled by computers with electronic safety aids and therefore a more complex MOT, together with equally complex equipment is needed to test the cars.” Despite new additions to the test and new testing methods, many of the failures for the MOT are still the old favourites lights, brakes and tyres. “It is the old and simple things that cause a vehicle to fail; a few simple checks by their own owners can avoid their car failing. Check all your light bulbs are working before bringing your car in for an MOT, have a good look at your tyres and very simple tasks such as filling up your windscreen washer bottle will help. Many garages will give you free advice on the safety levels of your tyres, if you just ask. “With the new rules it is a simple thing again to keep an eye on your dashboard warning lights; basically they are ‘warning’ lights so ignore them at your peril.” Despite the many new checks the MOT will still take a garage between 45 minutes and an hour to complete. “The new style MOT now has some 150 checks on safety

related items and emission levels. The MOT is not a service and nor should drivers feel it replaces a service, it is merely a collection of safety checks to ensure a vehicle’s road worthiness.” From November all cars produced prior to 1960 will no longer be required to be tested; Phil explained. “Basically there are so few cars built prior to 1960 on the road, and they would now be considered a classic car. Still 19 million vehicles are tested in the UK each year and when it comes to ensuring your safety on the road the test fee should be considered good value for money. Drivers should not fear the MOT; it is there to keep your car and, ultimately, your family safe. “I have been conducting MOTs for 36 years now and I am still shocked and amazed by what I see with many of the cars that are brought in for testing!” Phil said as he showed me a set of tyres that had just failed an MOT; they were from a family car and on one side they were worn down to the inner fabric and just waiting to rupture.  l To find out more about the new MOT there are two essential websites… www.mottester.co.uk and www.vosa.gov.uk/ Solent Life would like to think Phil Upshall for his help with this feature: www.titchfieldmotorworks.co.uk East Street, Titchfield, PO14 4AD The maximum fee for an MOT is currently £54 but many garages offer lower fees. Titchfield Motor Works, for example, charge £52.99.

FINANCIAL

PROWESS words by justin stevens

I

have been advising in the financial services industry for 20 years and because of my extensive knowledge and valuable experience I was approached to run my own Partner Practice within the exclusive and award-winning St James’s Place Wealth Management Group. I put my success down to having a key objective; to provide a highly professional, competent and personal approach to financial planning, wealth management and client services for both private and business clients. My role is to pass on my knowledge and experience by helping and educating my clients in the world of finance relevant to their own specific circumstances; which is why I have partnered with Solent Life magazine, we’ve already helped many readers and received positive feedback from many new clients. Within my Practice I have ensured that all of the financial services needs of my clients are covered and have the exclusive access of the distinctive approach to investment management and the guarantee of my advice to you from the St James’s Place Wealth Management Group. I have the support of 629 members of SJP staff dedicated to providing my business with investment, pension, tax, trust protection and technical services, so I am confident in dealing with all the challenges ahead and the constant financial legislation changes that are occurring, which is vital in keeping client’s financial arrangements up to date. My philosophy is quite simple, if I can add value to a client’s financial affairs, then we can work together. I look at helping clients CREATE more wealth, help them MANAGE it more effectively and PROTECT it. People often feel they should know what investments they have got and are often afraid to find out what it is they don’t know. If your car goes wrong, and you are not mechanically minded, you would not hesitate to take it to an expert; so why not see an advisor about your finances? My opinion and advice cost nothing, there is no hourly rate, so come and have a chat. This is becoming more and more important as the advice received is dramatically changing; we have already seen major banks on the High Street withdrawing from offering advice. My personal speciality is dealing within the savings

and investment market including Inheritance Tax, trustee advice and Long Term Care and Retirement planning for personal individuals and businesses; which we will look at in more detail next month. However, let’s look at Mortgages and Protection, as this is causing clients the most concern at the moment, especially with gender re-pricing coming in at the end of this year. I have set up a mortgage review service which includes life insurance comparison quotes… So how does this work in practice? We have access to the whole of the market, which means we can search all of those providers that normally include exclusive offers that are not available on the High Street. We all like to shop around or even ‘compare the market’ in this digital age; but how can you shop around when you don’t know which shops to go to? Well, we will provide different options, helping you to make an informed choice by showing several quotes with no advice fee payable; if I can add value we can take it further, if not then things stay as they are – it’s that simple! We run a comparison service on your life insurance arrangements on the same basis; if we can beat your quote we change, if we can’t then you stay as you are. Your life insurance premium includes all costs, so no other fees are payable. Why do you need to review this? Because, amongst other things, life insurance premiums are going to increase under gender re-pricing

Gender neutral pricing may not be at the forefront of your mind or something that you are even aware of, however, the need to review your existing cover is becoming more urgent than ever. The European Court of Justice has ruled that from December this year, insurance policies should not discriminate between men and women meaning that protection plans, whether life cover, critical illness, health cover or medical cover, will be sold taking no account of gender. The most obvious implication will be an increase in the cost of your cover. The application of this pricing will vary amongst providers but any percentage increase applied to a monthly premium over the term of your cover is not to be ignored. EXCLUSIVE OFFER for Solent Life readers please phone or E-mail with your existing policy details to get a comparison quote.  l

SERVICES OFFERED: l ISA, Junior ISAs, Investment Bonds, Spanish Investments for Spanish residents, existing investments reviewed. l Mortgages Whole of market l Long Term Care l Inheritance Tax Planning & Trustee advice l Specialist Tax Planning using Enterprise Investment schemes and Venture Capital Trusts l Portfolio Management Service l Retirement Plans, Stakeholder Pensions, SelfInvested Personal Pension Schemes (SIPPs), Pension Transfers and Pension Sharing on Divorce, existing Pension Funds reviewed. l Trustee Schemes l Annuities & Income draw-down… Nearing retirement we offer whole market for Annuities, which means we search the whole of markets and obtain quotes from them all, so you don’t have to take the pension from the existing provider.

OWES Week is one of the UK’s longest running sporting events and, with the exception of the two world wars, has been held every August since 1826. Traditionally, Cowes Week takes place after Glorious Goodwood and before the Glorious Twelfth; the first day of the grouse shooting season; although the Olympics have delayed it by a week this year. During the week-long festival of sailing events, the town of Cowes becomes one long street party with plenty to entertain the non-sailor.

For details of most of the happenings during Cowes Week go to aamcowesweek.co.uk Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 11th to 18th August Ladies Day Thursday 16th August

40…

“Ladies Day is a celebration of women in sailing; a third of all competitors who race at our event are women.” Michelle Warner is Sales and Marketing Director for event organisers, Cowes Week Limited. “Despite these numbers, the perception of Cowes Week is that it is a male dominated event. “Ladies Day focuses on the fact that sailing is one of the few sports where women and men can compete equally”. The day culminates in the awarding of a stunning Isle of Wight Glass trophy, where the winner is selected from nominations given to a panel who decide on the woman who has done a lot for the sport. It is not necessarily about the most high profile sailors; it is about the women who are just out there doing it and making a difference. “The first winner in 2006, when Ladies Day was first introduced, was the late Betty Moore who, at 88, had sailed every Cowes week since 1947,” Michelle continued. “Sadly she passed away in 2008 but she was a true inspiration.” It is up to fellow sailors to nominate a female sailor who has inspired them. “All nominations have to be in by the Friday

just before the start of Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and then a select panel of judges comprised of Double Olympic Gold Medallist, Shirley Robertson; Yachting World’s Features Editor, Elaine Bunting; the CEO of the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation, Sue Tibballs; and myself; who then decide upon the winner. All nominees are invited to a reception on Ladies Day, where the winner is then announced. This award is in recognition of the outstanding contribution, commitment, or achievement of women in sailing – from the Corinthian sailor and those overcoming difficulties in order to succeed in sailing, to those who have undertaken remarkable challenges. Over the last five years, a diverse cross-section of female sailors has received the Trophy.” Ladies Day was introduced with a simple objective: to raise the profile of sailing for women. “Over the last decade, there has been a marked increase in female participation at Cowes Week, and the number of female skippers has leapt by 150% during this time” Michelle added. “Ladies Day uses Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week as a platform to celebrate

women in sailing, and by doing so, help spread the message that the event is fully inclusive.” “If there are a group of ladies who do not sail but still want to get involved in the Ladies Day celebrations, the special Ladies Day lunch at Northwood House is an ideal opportunity.” She added. Northwood House on the Island is an iconic early-Victorian Grade II listed house with glorious painted function rooms and surrounded by parkland, occupying a prime position above Cowes and on Ladies’ Day they are offering a special lunch, prepared by David Rogers of All About Catering, the in-house caterer. “Many people asked for a special lunch during Cowes Week, so, ladies, can go along and enjoy this special event.” For more details and how to make reservations – visit the website, www.northwoodhouse.org. “Unlike other events like Royal Ascot, our Ladies Day is not about dressing to impress, but

more about celebrating women in sport and achieving equally.” There is also a Family Day at Cowes, on the Sunday. “This is about promoting what the family can do during the event.” Michelle said. “You can go to Cowes and get family discounted prices for spectator boats; there are kids’ competitions and plenty of street entertainment. “For families that sail together, they get a special flag to fly and we award onwater prizes. Whilst being a competitive sailing regatta, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is an inclusive event” The party theme culminates on the Friday evening with the spectacular Fireworks display, beginning at 9.30, when every boat gets out onto the water and every inch of beach on both sides of the Solent fills with spectators for this annual and magical event. Aberdeen Asset Management has extended their sponsorship

of the week-long event until 2015 and the financial services company has also extended their support to include a significant proportion of the funding for the traditional firework display. The regatta may be an onwater event but one of the great things about Cowes Week is that spectators can watch much of the event from the shore; with The Green and The Parade being good vantage points as well as plenty of opportunity to get on spectator boats which go out on hour-long trips at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm, departing from Trinity Landing on Cowes Parade. As well as the many buskers and street entertainers that make Cowes a week long party venue, one of the highlights of the daily events, as well as one of the best locations, is to watch the starts each morning in the area between the Castle of the Royal Yacht Squadron and the cannons – as long as you don’t mind the loud bangs! Here you

can get right on the line and see who got the best start and which boats were over the line. You can also hear the race officers giving their countdowns and calling the starts from the Royal Yacht Squadron battlements. Then in the afternoon, head along the Green towards Egypt Point to watch the Cowes Week fleets as they finish. Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is all about the sailing, it is a regatta after all, but there is so much more to the event including some great days out for the non-sailor. Cowes fills with a wonderful party atmosphere and even if the sun does not shine then the fun party feel that fills to town of Cowes will put a smile on your face.  l

Lymington Used Boat Show 14th – 23rd September Lymington Yacht Haven Opening times 10am – 5pm daily Running to coincide with the Southampton International Boat Show, Ancasta’s Lymington Used Boat Show, provides the perfect opportunity to sell your boat. Now celebrating its 28th year, as the show’s reputation grows, so do the success stories and both serious buyers and vendors alike grasp the opportunity of increased activity. The show consistently attracts buyers to the Lymington Yacht Haven because, geographically they are so enviably placed at this intense boat buying time of the year, and Ancasta’s qualified brokers are able to discuss every aspect pertaining to the boats on display. This knowledge not only extends to each boat, but Ancasta are able to offer help and advice on finance, insurance and berthing. If you’re thinking about buying a yacht or motor boat this year, make sure you don’t miss out on employing their expertise. The whole Ancasta Lymington team will be available all day, every day throughout the show. Thinking of Selling your Boat? There are many reasons why selling your yacht or motor boat with a broker is a good idea. However, one of the biggest attractions is that it costs you very little unless a sale completes. Leighton King, Marketing Director for Ancasta International Boat Sales says… “… this is one of the main reasons that many owners come to us. We have a strong presence in the market and handle hundreds of enquiries every day from buyers contacting our network of 18 offices. We can offer owners instant access to these buyers, something that many of them try to do privately through small magazine adverts and the internet. It may seem like the cheaper option but you can quickly rack up big bills by placing your own adverts, whether they are on or offline. We offer an instant cost effective solution to this, not to mention the added comfort that a qualified broker will handle all of the viewings, negotiations and subsequent transactional aspects involved in selling a boat, and believe me, there are a lot!”

Why should you display your boat at the Ancasta Lymington Used Boat Show? The Lymington Used Boat Show attracts buyers from all over the world. Historically ,this can be attributed to two very definite reasons. Not only is the show run concurrently with the PSP Southampton International Boat Show, but the Lymington show offers a huge range of quality vessels, in one location, and all are available to view on the same day with a qualified broker. “Although contact with these buyers is possible through the usual Ancasta service, brokers have noticed over recent years that buyers will wait until a used boat show is happening before making the trip to the UK. They’ll tend to visit the show as well as view other boats in the local area. Displaying your boat at the show ensures that this unique annual opportunity is maximised” says King. Thinking of Buying A Boat? Buying a yacht or motor boat is an expensive exercise, so naturally you will want to be absolutely sure that you buy the right boat at the right price. This often takes many months of viewing boats all over the region (often further afield) and you can sometimes feel as if you are going round in circles. A Used Boat Show is the ideal opportunity to maximise your time by spending a whole day or even weekend, viewing as many boats as you like in one location. This allows for more meaningful comparisons between the different makes, models, sizes, ages and prices without the inevitable time lag that is usually attached to this process. For more information about the Lymington Used Boat Show please contact the Ancasta Lymington Office (contact details below) or visit the Ancasta website. To display your boat at the Lymington Used Boat Show please contact the Ancasta Lymington office as soon as possible. The closing date to guarantee your boat appears in the printed and online catalogues is Wednesday 5th September, but places often fill up very quickly and will be offered on a first come first served basis. Every boat entered into the show will also benefit from the full Ancasta brokerage service. Ancasta Lymington Tel: 01590 673 212 Email: lymington@ancasta.com www.ancasta.com

FAMILY BUILDERS FOR THE FAMILY HOME

W

hen it comes to your home it is always a scary prospect to invite strangers through the door, especially when those strangers are about to remove walls, build extensions, convert lofts or any other number of building tasks that you need doing to your family home.

One solution to that problem is to employ a family run building business to do the work as they understand that they will be working in a family home and will want to work closely with the homeowner. living history

words by david rose-massom

A

few months ago, Solent Life featured the sympathetic renovation of the Superintendant’s House in the Royal Clarence Yard on Gosport’s waterfront; it got us wondering about the history of an area that has now become a leisure marina and elegant place to live. The street and building names alone give clues to what was formerly a victualling yard and brewery for the Royal Navy; Weevil Lane (not what you think), The Salthouse, The Malthouse, The Granary, The Bakery and Salt Meat Lane all evoke thoughts of past uses for the old buildings that have now become homes and restaurants, and one beautifully beamed building, The Slaughterhouse, is in the late stages of negotiations towards becoming a church. Before the Royal Clarence Yard took on the role of keeping the RN fed it was an important Naval brewery which was overseen by a victualling agent called Mr Weovil, and it is believed the road leading into the Yard was a corruption of his name rather than that of the weevil that used to attack and feed on the ships’ hard-tack biscuits. It was in 1690 that Captain Henry Player, who lived in a wonderful residence in the yard called Weevil House, opened a brewery specifically to supply the Navy and following his death it passed through several owners, In 1774 the Navy consisted of a little over seventeen and a half thousand men but with the outbreak of the Napoleonic Wars this quickly rose to 107,000 and they all needed their daily ration of beer and so it was that in around 1780, £8,800 was spent on a new brew-house that was capable of supplying beer for 13,000 men. Eventually in 1783 the Government of the day took over its management and the establishment took on the name of the King’s Brewery. Originally, all the brewing and victualling of ships took place in Portsmouth but the Government moved them across to Gosport and in particular the Royal Clarence Yard. A purpose

56…

built establishment that cost, what was in those Victorian days, a staggering £71,500. Civil Architect to the Navy was George Ledwell Taylor and the state-of-the-art complex was designed by him with extensive use of steam power being utilised to carry out the work on the project. Considering the size, and magnificence, of the buildings the timescale to complete the project was very short, just four years! The name of this new supply yard came from King George III’s son The Duke of Clarence, who, following the death of his brother George IV became King William IV. As a 14 year old prince, William had been sent to sea and would rise to the rank of Lord High Admiral and take a great interest in the lives and well being of sailors. William died just five years after the yard was completed and there is no record that he ever visited the establishment that bore his name. Queen Victoria was a frequent visitor, who even had her own railway station in the yard. This led to a private pier and enabled her to board the Royal Yacht and cross the Solent to her beloved Osborne House. The Royal train would pass through Gosport’s wonderful station which had opened in 1841, then through the ramparts to Royal Clarence Yard. Incidentally, The Slaughterhouse was built in its current location having been relocated from adjacent to the landing stage for the Royal Yacht due to many complaints from the Royal Household of ‘offensive effluvia’ from the old slaughterhouse which discharged into the harbour where the Royal Yacht moored. Queen Victoria died at Osborne House in 1901 and royal mourners gathered at the Royal

Clarence Yard to take the coffin by train to London; it was the last time the Royal Landing was used! On July 31st 1970 a 300 year–old Royal Naval tradition ended at precisely 6-bells in the forenoon watch when the last rum ration was issued aboard ships of the Royal Navy. A day forever to be remembered as black tot day! As the yard was a main storage location for the Navy’s rum, when the rum rations ceased, so it ended the last of the operational functions and a need for the yard. Royal Clarence Yard was officially closed; only re-opening briefly in 1982 for the Falkland’s Conflict. In 2001, Berkeley Homes undertook a £100 million regeneration scheme that has sympathetically brought together the historic and the modern, creating a series of attractive squares, preserving the rich heritage and appearance whilst creating a new residential and business community on Gosport’s waterfront. Throughout the scheme, the architects used studies of the archaeology and history of the site initiated by English Heritage and Gosport Borough Council, as well as conservation advice. In 2011, Berkeley Homes and the owners of The Superintendant’s House were awarded Green Plaques by the local Gosport Historic Society for their work in faithfully restoring and retaining the history. Today it is a marina to many yachts and home to many local people from all walks of life so rather than the history of a wonderful location coming to an abrupt end it continues to write its own story.  l More of the history can be found in a booklet called ‘FEEDING THE FORCES – THE HISTORY OF THE ROYAL CLARENCE YARD 1827 – 1992’ written and published by the Gosport Society. www.thegosportsociety.com For details of properties available and of their involvement in the Waterfront Development go to the Berkeley website at www.berkeleyhomes.co.uk or www.royal-clarence-marina.co.uk Tel: 023 9252 9054

day in the life

turning silver into gold words by david rose-massom

T

om Daley is the name that perhaps has caught the media eye, but his Synchronized diving partner is the most successful diver in the UK, he has already been to four Olympic Games and has a Silver Medal among a whole list of championships and the day before leaving for training camp Pete Waterfield took time to speak to Solent Life.

We see Pete standing ten metres above the water, body toned and tuned, and he is about to leap into the air before hitting the water as cleanly as possible; and to make it a infinitely more difficult, he must do it in absolute synchronisation with his partner, where two divers form a team and perform dives simultaneously; but what happens to an Olympian on the day of competition. “A light breakfast for me, maxi muscle breakfast oats or small amount of porridge or just toast; I never like a breakfast that fills me for the day.” Pete explained how his day began but made it all sound so simple and matter of fact. “I prefer if we compete in the afternoon as we can spend the morning in preparation.” With the title of Olympian, one might expect an imposing figure, toned and all rippling muscles and Pete is exactly that, but in a smaller package – a hugely

58…

.co.uk • AUGUST 2012

friendly man who has time for everyone around him. “We are allocated set times to train in the pool, as the other competitors also need time in the pool,” he continued. “So before-hand, we go to the gym and go through warm up exercises and get the body working. “Once in the pool we have our list of dives that we are going to do and so we go through them as if in competition, we sometimes have to fine-tune, but at this stage we know what we are going to do and how we are going to do it. That run through is pretty intense, almost as if we were already in the competition.” Pete went on to explain another reason that he preferred a late competition, after lunch, so that mind and body are ready and fully fuelled. “The Olympics are the biggest event in the world, certainly the biggest in my sport, and being a fouryear-cycle you only get a handful of people who get to

compete in them. Then take the medal winners and there are even fewer people who achieve this goal. I have a silver medal and that puts you amongst the elite.” Pete said this without any sign of boasting, he had earned the right to use those words. “With synchro diving we are among the best in the world; the Chinese are always strong competition, among others, but we are the best. We get six dives, its like going straight into a final. The first two dives are the easier ones, less degree of difficulty and then come the four optional dives; these are the harder dives, with the higher degrees of difficulty. We get one chance to win that medal, just one chance every four years!” Standing ten metres above the water and waiting to dive, does fear set in? “Always a little fear;” he replied. “You are ten metres in the air and mistakes

can hurt, we dive from a concrete platform and that is unforgiving if you hit your head on the way down. The level of fear ensures that you concentrate and respect the danger within the sport.” Nobody knows this better than Pete Waterfield, he is the most successful diver to come out of this country, but after many years at the top this will be his last Olympics. “I have been doing this for 21 years, I have travelled the world and I still get to work at a hobby I began as a nine year old. If the body holds out, I will do another Commonwealth Games but at my age this will be my last Olympics. The body can only take so much punishment when hitting the water at 40 miles an hour; I have had operations on one shoulder already and will need one on my other before too long. “This is a hard job but Tom and I have

always had a good partnership with the same goals – we are both going for Gold; it is what we both want and if we went for anything less we would not be in the sport. “This is the London Games, our home games, and so what a way to leave my sport. I have enjoyed each Olympics but each time when I hear the crowd, I wished it was for me. This time the cheers of the crowd will be for me and the rest of Team GB; it will be an amazing experience; especially if we can get that Gold medal.”  l

MENS SYNCHRONISED 10m PLATFORM OLYMPIC REPORT Solent Life would like to thank Pete Waterfield for taking the time to speak with us. Pete along with his Synchro partner Tom Daley, despite their best efforts and a superb final dive failed in their bid for Olympic glory.

t was raining, when has it not been raining this summer, but it mattered not one jot as the wildlife were stepping out to say hello to the visitors and the stars of the show spend their lives mostly in water anyway…

It had been a long wait sorting out a sunny day to head out to the New Forest for a family adventure and still none appeared to be on the horizon; in the end we went anyway despite grey and heavy clouds overhead and the odd spot of rain hitting the car windshield, and what a great day out we had. The New Forest Wildlife Park had invited Solent Life to visit their twenty-five scenic acres of ancient woodland, wildlife and newly erected play area; and there was no way we could resist the opportunity to wander in the Park and spend time among a wonderful range of wildlife all in natural surroundings. The undoubted stars of the show are the four species of otter: Eurasian (indigenous to UK) Asian Short Claw, North American River Otter and the endangered Giant Otter from South America; but there are also European Wolf, 12 species of owls, foxes and deer. Other mammals to be seen are polecats, pine martens and highly endangered Scottish wildcat, lynx, wallaby and wild boar as well as the enormous European Bison and Red Deer grazing in a paddock just a few feet from the footpath.

62…

.co.uk • AUGUST 2012

But, it was a few feet inside the park that the first surprise came out to greet us. Normally very nervous around people a badger saw us and darted toward the fence, which this charming creature then climbed in an attempt to get even closer. It was a magical start to our day and difficult to break away from, in order to see the other creatures in the park. The butterfly house is entertaining and any thought that it may bore my four-year-old grandson, Harry, was a total misjudgement; he was enamoured with the large, yet delicate winged creatures. They are an amazing natural wonder, not least their transformation from caterpillar to butterfly, but because of their amazing colouring, delicate wings and silent flight. The first of the otter tanks, with a glass frontage, allows visitors to watch these enchanting creatures twist and play through the water. It seems like permanent playtime as they play-fight and with just a flick of their powerful bodies drive through the water. The New Forest Wildlife Park is not just a place where people can watch animals as entertainment; it also has a very serious conservation function.

In the Peak District National Park of Derbyshire is The Chestnut Conservation Centre; another Wildlife Park that was founded in 1984 by the Heap family. They also own and operate the New Forest Wildlife Park as well as the world famous Battersea Park Children’s Zoo in London. The UK Wildlife Parks are unique because they have Europe’s largest collections of different varieties of otters, owls and other indigenous wildlife. During our visit to the New Forest Park we spoke to the pine martin keeper, who told us of her three new charges, two females and a male pine martin rescued from an old house in Edinburgh where they had been left orphaned. They looked in fine fettle now as they raced and bickered around their large enclosure. A great deal of the Park’s work also involves the conservation and the caring for orphaned otters including the rehabilitation of the Eurasian Otter and they provide full care facilities for other injured or orphaned wild animals but especially otters, most of whom are eventually returned to the wild. Education over, and a little bored with fur and feather, Harry headed for the amazing new kids play area, much of which looked like a failed game of Jenga with smooth logs carefully piled and bolted together in natural looking

climbing frames, the perfect environment for an energetic and adventurous boy. In fact all the play equipment is very natural looking and fits in well with the surrounding Forest. The Park is now busy building a smaller version for toddlers. Children, and adults of all ages, had a whale of a time using these brilliant new play facilities. Back on the other side of the wire fence and the deer are friendly and if you are patient they will often approach for a gentle moment of human affection as their enclosures have openings which allow them to roam freely should they feel safe enough. From the mighty Bison in the bottom field to the tiniest of Britain’s rodents the Harvest Mouse, there is something for everyone to fall in love with; there is even the very pretty Jessie, the deaf fox. As you walk through the Park you pass lynx, wolf and boar and in the midst of these fenced off creatures wallaby roam freely and, at one point, standing out like the proverbial sore thumb, a small albino wallaby sat among the ferns. There is something for everyone at the New Forest Wildlife Park, they even have the opportunity to be a keeper for the day; time to roll up your sleeves, put on your boots, get your hands dirty and join the animal keepers for a day to remember, with the chance to feed the otters,

deer and many more. So no matter what the weather, ignore the rain showers, take a trip out to the edge of the New Forest where this amazing place will enthral and entertain you and your whole family. If you need proof of the excitement and fun that can be had, Harry sat in the car, said “Thank you Granddad” and was asleep before we had driven through the exit gate; I felt like joining him.  l

Up! moving on

words by fiona cooke

S

tarting school… some children love it, some fear it and some hate it… but as a rule they all have to do it!

Generally, the first two biggest transitions in a child’s life are when they start primary school and then, seven years later, move up to secondary school. The schools do everything they can to prepare the children for these transitions and I talked to the Head of Harrison Primary School, Carolyn Clark, and some of the teachers of both reception and Year 6, to find out more about what is involved. Most children starting at Primary School will have had some experience of preschool, and this is where the Reception teachers start when preparing for the new intake. They visit the pre-schools, chat to the staff and find out about the personalities, requirements and family circumstances – whether there are siblings, grandparents or similar involved in the upbringing etc. Whilst there the teachers will watch and interact with the children on an informal basis so your child will probably not even be aware that he or she was talking to a ‘Big School’ teacher! In May all the parents are invited into the school for a meeting, as well as informing the parents this meeting allows the teachers to get feedback on, amongst other things, the child’s friends. This is taken into account when deciding on which child goes into which class. It appears this is something of an exact science; as well as friendships being catered for the classes have a mix of spring, summer and autumn born children; an equal spread of boys and girls; and siblings of older children have the same teacher if possible. The children go in for two taster days during the summer term and on these days the school aims for the children to be in the classes they will inhabit when starting school properly. However tweaking does take place especially if, for example, it is found a group of particularly boisterous boys

64…

.co.uk • AUGUST 2012

have inadvertently been placed together! In early September the reception teachers will visit every child at home. For me, it felt a bit like getting a visit from the Queen; I spent the preceding two days cleaning and tidying the house! This time gives the children a chance to meet their teacher properly prior to starting school – the first day is much easier when you are greeted by a known and friendly face! That first proper day can be a big step for both the children and the parents. Separating from the parents can be an issue for the children but the teachers are relaxed about parents spending time in the classroom, helping their child settle for as long as it takes. In my case I felt as if I lived at the school for the first couple of weeks. The school aims to encourage independence and this can be more challenging for the parent than the child; the cloakroom is often full of parents helping their children to hang up coats, which the teachers know children are able to do when Mum or Dad is not around! Under certain circumstances parents can choose if their child goes full time immediately or attends part time for the first half term. The only requirements are that the child attends for a minimum of 15 hours a week and that the teachers are advised beforehand what the schedule is for each week. As much as starting school is a steep learning curve, the reception year of school has a play based curriculum known as Play to Learn, which is similar to the preschool environment. Throughout the year the children are taught skills in much the same way as we parents teach skills at home, they play but they learn at the same time. And for all first time mums – your child will claim not to remember a thing that they did during the day – do not take it personally; seven years on mine still apparently does

nothing all day! The fun and games of Reception class are far behind them when they start at Secondary School. Here the biggest adjustment is to being fully independent, managing their time and moving from class to class and teacher to teacher. Gone are the days of one classroom, one teacher and only three pieces of homework a week. My daughter is one of those moving up this year and I’m not sure who is dreading the deluge of homework more, me or her! The process of getting the children ready for the move starts at the beginning of Year Six. The teachers from both the Junior and Secondary Schools sit in on each other’s classes and watch the teaching. The Heads of Department from the senior school come and look at the children’s work, informally meet the children and get to know the Junior School environment. In many ways Year Six is all about preparing the children for Year Seven and the move to secondary education. Throughout the year the teachers and children discuss what this will entail, the curriculum is aimed at the transition to Year Seven and the teachers aim to foster the children’s independence as much as possible. There are two transition days, when the children visit the new school, meet the rest of their tutor group and are given a taster of what their new school days will entail. Apparently all the Year Six children came back from their transition days buoyed up and looking forward to the new term in September. A week after I write this article my daughter leaves Harrison Primary School. I will be in the playground to see her and her year group come out of school for the last time and I know I will shed some tears, as I did when she started school and as I no doubt will on her first day at Secondary School. These transitions are big steps – for both the children and the parents!  l

Proudly Supporting the Solent Ebp Awards

Itchen Sixth Form College was thrilled to sponsor a prize at the Solent EBP (Education Business Partnership) Amazing People Awards which took place in July. The Solent EBP works in partnership with businesses, schools and colleges across Southampton and South West Hampshire to help young people and adults develop employment skills through work experience, placements, and qualifications. The ceremony, held at the Southampton Novotel, recognised ‘Amazing People’ who’d shown great effort and achievement. Itchen’s sponsored prize for ‘Successful team of students who have won an inter-school/college challenge’ was awarded to a student group from Wildern School whose significant teamwork and entrepreneurial skills in the Southampton & District Hoteliers Challenge had impressed the judges. Presenting the award, Mike Viana, Itchen’s Head of Graphics, praised the students’ work and spoke of the importance of Itchen supporting such a worthwhile event.

Does your child have a hidden talent? Many children start secondary school already displaying talent in a particular area. Maybe they are musical, artistic, or have a sporting skill. Others, however, have yet to reveal their full potential and simply need the right environment in which to discover their strengths. Rebecca, for example, was already an accomplished musician when she started at The Gregg, joining the School’s Wind Band and Orchestra in her first term at the School. However, Rebecca discovered that she also had a flair for sport when she was asked to join the School’s Cross Country team, playing a key part in the team’s success in the local schools’ league. “At a small school, you get involved in so many different things, it can come as a great surprise to find that you are good at something you had never considered before!” The School prides itself on providing a high quality education, tailored to the needs of individual students. Unlike most independent schools, The Gregg does not select students on the basis of academic ability. Entry to the School is via an Entrance Assessment, the results of which are used to ensure students are placed in the most appropriate teaching group. Expectations are high in all areas of school life, and in public examinations, students of all abilities achieve high grades which are usually above benchmark predictions. To discover how your child could benefit from a Gregg School education, visit the School’s website at www.gregg.southampton. sch.uk or telephone 02380 472133 to make an appointment to visit.

future path the

words & images by david rose-massom

My scariest moment was when I gave up work and committed to the new business!” Jacky Barnett told Solent Life when we attended the First Birthday party of their Park Gate based day nursery. “Giving up my job to start the business was definitely scary but we have never looked back and enjoyed every moment since then.”

Warwick House Beacon Bottom, Park Gate, Southampton SO31 7GQ Tel: 01489 577778 Email: jacky@fpchildcare.co.uk www.pchildcare.co.uk

Futurepath Childcare is a family run day nursery for children between birth and five years and provides first class childcare services for a maximum of 50 children within their protective and comfortable premises; it was a year ago we reported on their opening when Formula One legend, and the landlord of their building, Derek Warwick cut the ribbon to launch the business. Futurepath is run by Jacky and Peter Barnett and they took time out from their celebrations to speak with us about how the last year had gone. “It was a big deal when we opened a year ago, and we did it with just one child on our books.” Jacky reminisced. “We also had just one full time member of staff but within a month or two we had eight children and four members of staff.” Husband Peter controls the business side and finances of Futurepath. “Our bank balance had dropped and although we were doing well we needed to do better; and so we pushed the boat out and decided to undertake some advertising as well as hand out business cards and begin networking.” He explained. “Very quickly word-of-mouth took over because of our care and high standards, the business just took off and parents began to come through the door; the business then snowballed. “We grew so quickly then that we suddenly found we needed more equipment but whenever Jacky asked for a something new it was my job to say no until we had the money in the bank. It has always been income before expenditure!” Peter said as Jacky smiled broadly and nodded in agreement and she added; “We have always had the philosophy that to be a success we would only spend the money that came in and not overreach ourselves before we had the income. We had spent a lot of money on the set-up which had put us on a firm footing from the outset; but we have always both been aware that we needed Peter’s prudent lead in things financial.” As we chatted I recalled that a year ago Jacky had told Solent Life that a ‘Satisfactory’ from Ofsted

.co.uk • AUGUST 2012

would be a failure in her eyes. “It was in December, after just five months of operation, that we had our first Ofsted Inspection;” Jacky explained. “We received nine ‘Outstandings’ out of a possible 17 and this after just five months that put us 3rd out of 22 Day Nurseries in the area and we became a preferred provider for Hampshire County Council.” Although Solent Life had visited their office on several occasions throughout the year it was the first time we noticed a framed picture on their wall, well not so much a picture but a sealed envelope with their signatures on the front. Jacky took up the story. “Four years ago we were on holiday in Sardinia and decided while we were sat on the beach that we wanted our own business and we came home from that holiday with a mission to succeed within three years. We had booked to go back to that same beach a year ago but we opened the Nursery instead.” She said. “But this year we went back to that beach and we set out our targets and business plan for the next three years and that is what is in that sealed envelope!” A small note next to the envelope which is sealed behind the glass of the picture frame carries the legend ‘DO NOT OPEN TILL JUNE 2015’. Suffice to say they would not divulge what was in the envelope! From just one child a little over 12 months ago Futurepath now have over 100 children on their books and wandering around their birthday party it was obvious the many parents who joined them for the celebration have nothing but trust and affection for the people they leave their children with on a daily basis. Another aspect of their year of working closely together is the relationship between husband and wife, and business partners. “We have a wonderful relationship.” Peter said. “We work very well together, but we do that by not actually ‘working together’ and doing what we both do best within the business to ensure that we continue to be the success we have worked so hard for.”  l

green fingers August

words by paul gibbons

Holiday fun at Garsons Visit Garsons at Fontley Road, Titchfield for family fun in August: Monday 20th, 11am to 4pm: The popular petting farm is back. Tuesday 21st, 2pm to 4pm: Fabulous facepainting. Wednesday 22nd, 2pm and 3pm: Listen to the storyteller.

W

e’ve had a lot of rain but look on the bright side – plants have been refreshed, the lawn is greener than usual and we haven’t had to do much watering. So long as the ground isn’t waterlogged (not a phrase we’re used to this time of year!) new plants can get nicely established with a combination of damp conditions and warmer air. Dare we hope for fine weather in August, so we can sit back and enjoy the garden? If you haven’t been able to venture out in the garden much, have a blitz on weeds so they don’t get a hold and seed. Deadheading roses and other flowering plants will encourage more blooms. Pinch back straggly growth of summer bedding plants. Summer planting There’s still a lot of summer to be enjoyed and plenty of bright colours are provided by late flowering perennials such as Michaelmas Daisy, Montbretia, Agapanthus, Echinacea, Perennial phlox and Dahlias, and they continue flowering until the first frost arrives. Perennial grasses are at their best this month and are great for complementing strong colours of later flowering perennials. Try feather grass (Stipa tenuissima), sometimes called angel hair, with its soft, feathery flower pinnacles which turn golden in August Fountain grass (pennisetum), is named for its graceful spray of foliage and gives a loose, informal gardening look. It sends out beautiful, fuzzy flower plumes in late summer and the white, pink, or red plumes continue into autumn. Greenhouses and cold frames have come into their own this season, since outdoor grow-your-own was a washout in July. If you don’t already have one, they’re worth the investment and Garsons has a selection that fit in a small space.

Summer pruning While your secateurs are handy, wisteria needs to be pruned to encourage flowering and prevent rampant growth. Cut down straggly new growth to 2-3 leaves from the base. Give evergreen hedges a shape and tidy up. Summer pruning of fruit trees will channel water and energy into fruit production particularly figs and apple trees and help prevent silver leaf disease in plums and cherries. Flowered herbs such as thyme and lavender need a trim to stop them becoming woody. For a steady supply of fresh herbs like parsley in winter, cut the younger leaves, rinse, dry and place in a plastic bag then pop it in the freezer. No need to chop it, simply crush them gently when frozen and use as required. Spring bulbs Bulbs arrive at the Garden Centre in mid-August. This includes the autumn flowering crocus, which is increasingly popular so don’t miss out. Plant bulbs in late August or September. There are many kinds available including daffodils, snowdrops and tulips for a burst of colour early next year. Use a slow release bulb feed and bulb fibre to give them a healthy start. Until next month, happy gardening. If the rain keeps on, we’ll do a feature on plants for boggy conditions!  l

f you visit Swanwick Lakes at dusk in August, you may well see bats swooping low over the water or flying acrobatically through the glades in the woods.

Here at Swanwick Lakes we have records of three species of bats. Pipistrelles are the most common bat in the UK and also the smallest, weighing less than a £1 coin; by comparison Noctules are one of the larger species – similar in size to a swift. The third species which may be encountered here is the so- called ‘water bat’ or Daubenton’s which fly close to the surface of the water catching insects. By August, this year’s juvenile bats will be catching and eating insects alongside their parents. All British bat species are insectivorous, using their sophisticated echolocation system to seek out and catch insects on the wing. Amazingly, an adult Pipistrelle bat may catch up to 3000 midges in one evening- increasing its body weight by up to 25%! It is illegal to disturb bats and you must have a licence to handle them but if you are interested in these fascinating furry creatures and want to find out more about them then why not join us on our Bat Walk at the beginning of September?  l Swanwick Lakes Nature Reserve is an 86 acre reserve located on Sopwith Way, off Swanwick Lane. The reserve is owned by NATS and managed by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. The centre has regular events for both adults and children and is also open to pre-booked schools and community groups. The reserve is open from dawn until dusk for all to enjoy. Join us today…

going the extra mile C

arters of Swanwick have been an integral part of the community for over 90 years. They are able to provide a level of service and a choice of equipment to meet all needs and requirements and this level of service has recently been highlighted by three wonderful stories

Following an award of two grants from the Sports Council, Sarisbury Cricket Club in Allotment Road, have made some fantastic improvements to the grounds and clubhouse and despite this season’s miserable weather the club has been a hive of activity with many dedicated club members taking care of the grounds and preparing for weekend matches with the help of a shiny new Kubota mower and lots of training and helpful hints and tips from the team at Carters of Swanwick.

Jim Whitmore was the proudest man in the world when he carried the Olympic Torch through Southampton last month. He was nominated for the honour because over the last 13 years Jim has run 92 marathons raising money for charity. He was inspired by the sad death of his nephew Matthew aged 10 months, from cot death and runs for the charity FSID, the cot death charity. On 23rd December Jim plans to run in his 100th marathon in his hometown, Portsmouth. He will run the other 7 between August and November – quite a feat! Jim also runs a gardening business and has been buying his machinery from Carters of Swanwick for over 20 years. Jim says he feels very much part of the Carters family and counts the team as his close friends – he even shares his season ticket at his beloved Fratton Park with one of the team. Jim says that without the support of companies like Carters of Swanwick, he couldn’t have achieved all that he has.

David Henson was born in Southampton and lived locally until he joined the Army. 16 months ago David lost both of his legs in an IED explosion in Afghanistan. His rehabilitation has been swift, helped by his extremely positive ‘can do’ attitude to his injuries; and he is now back at work helping those he terms as ‘less fortunate than himself’ to come to terms with living with their injuries. David is looking forward to studying for a degree in Biomedics to enable him to design and produce prosthetics and other products. Recently David and his girlfriend returned to the local area and purchased their first home together and David was determined to get involved in landscaping the garden and DIY. He turned to Carters of Swanwick and after a discussion about his needs and requirements, they have been able to adapt a ride on mower with hand controls; which David describes as simply ‘brilliant’. With its trailer attached, David uses his mower as an all terrain utility vehicle – as well as the gardening he has recently ripped out his old kitchen and transported all the rubbish and rubble to the skip with his mower! Although more interested in hard landscaping David is learning about flowers and plants too and a visit to Chelsea Flower Show earlier this year saw him meeting another keen gardener, the Queen. Solent Life looks forward to telling you more of David’s story next month.

respite words by david rose-massom

I

t is tough putting up with the things that life throws at us from time to time, a bad day at work, a motorist just carved you up on the motorway or you spilt the milk – or your child is born and his, or her, brain has been starved of oxygen and this has caused them to suffer from Cerebral Palsy; now you have tough days all day and everyday; year in year out…

In 1952 a group of parents of children with cerebral palsy, came together and formed a support group; and the ROSE ROAD ASSOCIATION was born and now in 2012 it is celebrating its 60th birthday. Beth Rogers of Rose Road told the story to Solent Life; “There was certainly nothing locally in the way of support for anyone with a disabled child back in those days. It took just one parent, at the end of their tether, to place an advert in the local paper for others in that situation to respond,” she explained. “They first met in a front room which led to regular Saturday gatherings with up to 30 young people who had cerebral palsy. From there things grew quickly and it was only two years later in 1954 that Rose Road had raised enough funds in the community for a custom-built day centre. By 1959 they also had a school for 40 children.” Children with cerebral palsy have difficulties in controlling muscles and movements as they grow and develop. The nature and extent of these difficulties may change as children grow but cerebral palsy itself is not progressive: the injury or impairment in the brain does not change. However, the effects of the brain injury on the body may change over time for better or worse. Depending on the precise area of the brain that is affected, there may be associated difficulties which become obvious during development; for example, in vision, hearing, learning and behaviour. This all puts strain on the

78…

family unit and this is where the support work of Rose Road comes into the equation. Beth continued with the story. “Primarily, we provide a range of themed activities to offer a balance of structure and imagination that encourage children’s creativity, enable them to develop confidence and allow them to have fun, details of these and other services, can be found on our website. Also by just being here we enable families of children with disabilities to get together and in doing so realise they are not alone. “The children may also be very much alone in everyday life and by coming here, they mix with other children with the same difficulties as them. We have respite care for children up to the age of 25, and we have just gone up to that age because that is an important transitional period as they leave education,” Beth continued. “This means that from a packed daily routine and mixing with their peers, they are suddenly in an emptiness, which in turn is also very hard on parents.” At the Bradbury Centre in Aldermoor, Southampton, in addition to the highly trained team of workers and volunteers, there are outreach workers. “They go out into the community to help. That could be something as simple as picking up a child from school, taking them swimming and then out for a meal. This not only gives the family a short respite from the constant care, but also allows the child to communicate and integrate outside of the home.

Many of the outreach workers are young and so they become friends as well as carers. “We give the children a sense of normality!” Beth added. “Each child has their own core plan, a care worker who will best suit them and we fit our organisation around their needs; not ours. Over the years as an organisation we have learned to change and adapt to fit the requirements of the children and their families.” The name of this wonderful organisation comes from the address of one of those early meetings 60 years ago, and now with some 350 children, and their families, to care for it has come a long way from one parent at the end of their tether who was brave enough to advertise for help and support.  l

If you would like to get involved and make a real difference, please contact Beth Rogers on 023 8072 1202 or email at bethrogers@roseroad.org.uk Rose Road Community Day Thursday 1st November They will be holding a large community event on the 1st November and they need you to get involved! They will be collecting across the local area so if your business, school, community group, friends or family would like to volunteer for a day they would love to hear from you, there will also be “special activities” to get involved with, so watch their website for details! The big event for this Diamond Jubilee year though is: Rose Road White Christmas Dinner Dance Friday 30th November Rose Road will be holding a very special Diamond Jubilee Dinner Dance, kindly supported by Thomas Eggar LLP, at the De Vere Grand Harbour Hotel in aid of the Rose Road Children’s Appeal. www.roseroadchildrensappeal.org.uk for all event details. www.roseroad.org.uk

Teams of three are invited to sign up to this fun, adventurous and rather quirky event on the Isle of Wight and cycle 19 miles, canoe 2 miles and run 8 miles. The route goes off road, through forests, up on the Downs, to the beach, along the cliff edge and along small winding island roads. This fund raising event began in 2004 and has raised around £140,000. New for 2012 teams can choose to raise money for either, Wessex Heartbeat, Sail 4 Cancer or The Rainbow Centre. Entry into the Wightlink Wight Challenge remains £45 per person and all competitors are requested to raise £100 for their chosen charity. The event is filling up fast so if you are interested, please visit www.wightchallenge.co.uk, download a Registration Form.

ARMED FORCES DAY

Despite the poor weather, crowds still descended on Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard to celebrate Armed Forces Day. With all the entertainers and stall holders in costumes from the 1940s it was a fun day with plenty to entertain the whole family. www.historicdockyard.co.uk

GOLD CUP 2012

The celebrities put on their finery, spectators dressed for the occasion and much champagne was drunk and nibbles were, well nibbled, as the premier polo match of the season, The Verve Cliquot Cup was held at Cowdray Park. The prestigious trophy for the British Open Polo Championship was won by Cortium following a thrilling final that went to 10 goals to 9. www.cowdraypolo.co.uk

out & about SPITBANK LAUNCH

Spitbank Fort in the middle of the Solent had its official opening and launch party last month. With singing from the Three Belles and fine food from chef Becs, the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth ‘launched’ the luxury fortress hotel by smashing a bottle of Champagne against the Victorian brickwork. Owner Mike Clare told the 80 assembled guests that although this was an historic day for the fort, there was more to come in the Solent as the company were about to begin work on the second of their three forts at No Man’s Land. www.clarenco.com/ venues/spitbank-fort

CHARITY PRESENTATIONS

To raise any monies for charity in these austere times is tough so when Solent Life attended a cheque presentation to local charities from last year’s Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Trevor Cartwright, we were astounded to learn he had raised in excess of £46,000 during his mayoral year. Toe in the Water, Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Warsash Wasps football teams were the Mayors chosen charities and he presented the cheques to two of the charities in the Mayor’s Parlour which had been kindly loaned by this year’s Mayor for the occasion.

SWANWICK, BURSLEDON and WARSASH REGATTA The Regatta has its origins in the friendly rivalry that existed between fishermen, yachtsmen and watermen of the Hamble River, who organised races amongst themselves. During the last century the annual event gained Regatta status. The Regatta is organised and run by a committee of local people representing the three villages and relies on the generous support given by well wishers to finance the not inconsiderable expenses involved. The unique family atmosphere of the Regatta has been gently nurtured over the years and it is one of the few traditional village Regattas remaining. Saturday 25th August Midday till 6pm Afternoon Events at the Elephant Boatyard with fancy

dress encouraged. 2.30pm Opening ceremony followed by aquatic events and children’s fancy dress parade (Theme London Through the Ages). 3.30pm (approx). Water Carnival then the Grand Finale at 10.30pm – Torchlight parade of dinghies & Grand Firework display. HERITAGE OPEN DAYS This is a chance to join in and celebrate your community, this event happens across the UK and every year in September thousands of buildings of every age, style and function open for free as part of Heritage Open Days. This national event is a great opportunity to search and discover England’s heritage. One of the most popular is the Gosport Heritage Open Days; in 2010, over 4,000 people visited sites and activities in and around Gosport; making it the most popular and exciting Heritage Open Day event to date. With venues such as the Diving Museum, Explosions and the Submarine Museum there is something for the whole family to enjoy. Various venues Thursday 6th – Sunday 9th September. HAMPSHIRE OPEN STUDIOS Across the county small signs suddenly appear on every street corner, or so it seems, and they all point to various homes and studios. In Hampshire we have some of the most of gifted amateur and professional artists, sculptures, potters and craftsmen that you can find. So look for the pink direction arrows and they will guide you to the artists’ doors where you can enjoy a wide variety of art forms from first time exhibitors to emerging newcomers and well

known professionals. As you see each month in Solent Life there is some great art out there, go out and find it. Various homes and studios across Hampshire; 18 th – 27th August. www. hampshireopenstudios.co.uk HAIRSPRAY It’s 1962, the 50s are out and change is in the air.
