The setting is idyllic, broad windows with a view out over the gently sloping hillside with the rows of vines cascading down. The comfortable seating out on the patio catching the last evening rays of summer sunshine. All that, fine wine and some wonderful cuisine; perfect!

E

arlier in the day I had called into Wickham Vineyard for the whole experience, the winery tour, the tasting and then the food and on my arrival I was reminded of a swan working against a tidal river; on the surface all was calm, peaceful and with wonderful views of Hampshire countryside and vines that were just beginning to reach out across the gaps in the rows. But like the swan under the surface, in the packing shed the team were hustling and bustling getting a big delivery labelled, packed in boxes and ready for shipment. Jonathan Rogers handles the marketing for the vineyard so it was he who got to escape the shed and join me for coffee on the peaceful terrace. “There is no real hierarchy here as everyone does everything.” As was proved during the evening when Director Wilhelm Mead was busy riding his tractor up and down the rows of vines mowing the grass. “Earlier this year the opportunity arose for Wilhelm and the team to take over the running of the vineyard and restaurant and now, six months down the line, it is looking to be a wise move.

20…

.co.uk • JULY 2013

“Growing the grape and producing the wine can be a very stressful year-long cycle as you cannot produce a good wine from a bad grape so our effort all the time is all about the grape,” explained Jonathan. “It begins with pruning in January; that takes until spring, then we begin to keep a wary eye on the weather and keep the vines disease free. Then onto the harvest in September time; it is a busy year, every year.” Wilhelm later explained that one of the ways of telling when the grape is ready is the birds; they go nowhere near the grape until they are plump and sweet, then they can destroy a crop overnight if not watched. As part of the Wickham experience; the tour, the wine tasting, there is also the restaurant; which for me is the gem of the vineyard. Book a table for your evening meal but then arrive early and take the tour; it makes for an amazing evening experience. Here at Solent Life we have a belief in the dining experience being an evening of entertainment rather than just refuelling for the body and the Vineyard Restaurant wins points on every level. Stepping from the car the stresses of the day just drain away while you gaze across the stunning landscape, which means as you sit in the restaurant and continue enjoying the view it is a relaxed meal. Chef Paul Dive has had eight years of Michelin experience including three years at Le Manoir under Raymond Blanc and he believes food should be simple, uncomplicated and free from taste enhancers; above all, and quite simply, he states food should be ‘nice’ – well as they say the proof of the pudding etc; Fresh baked bread from a local artisan baker was joined by an amuse bouche that not only amused but absolutely delighted with its mini terrine of ham hock with a fig and apple chutney. Nanny Williams Cheese Souffle (and I have no idea who she is before you ask), was a triumph of taste. Cornered on all sides

THE WICKHAM EXPERIENCE x

by apple and walnut salad, the firm and upstanding soufflé smelled of old fashioned bakeries but just as that smell began to fade the aroma of the locally sourced Loosehanger blue goats cheese broke through – and the taste was so much better than the delicious aromas. The dish was delicate, warm and with an amazing soft texture which was balanced by the crispness of the salads, this was all followed by the blue cheese dancing around the taste buds. Awaiting the main course my eyes were drawn outside yet again to the landscape and in the blue sky above the vines a buzzard drifted lazily by; while over the terrace swallows dived and danced frantically feeding. A complex and beautiful looking dish was served; Poached Guinea Fowl Breast, Roasted Leg and served with pickled mushrooms, galette potato and a truffle jus. The truffle flavour sneaked in with a gentle taste, the bread crumb coated breast meat was delicate, tasty and tender. The darker leg was a little coarser in texture and a little darker in flavour making this a balanced dish; the mushrooms then added a lovely acidic sharpness and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. An epic main course and one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. Chef Paul is very talented indeed and he proved that again with a chocolate fondant dessert that was an exterior of soft and delicate sponge, an interior of warm, gooey chocolate that was then accompanied by crushed crunchy chocolate biscuit and a cold, beautiful, quenelle of ice cream; smooth, crunch, warm and cold all on the same plate – stunning. With the experience of the winery and vineyard tour and a decent meal this would have been a great evening; with the meal that was so professionally prepared, presented and served, and all with wonderful views across Hampshire countryside and rows of vines – a perfect evening!

A SNAPSHOT OF PUBLIC RELATIONS A month in the life of Jane Dean PR BLOG No. 3 Welcome back to my monthly blog! I’m not sure if we’ve all been duped into thinking that summer has definitely arrived as I’ve recently enjoyed a Pimms, dusted off the denim shorts and even bought some Factor 15 suncream, so long may it continue! Week 1 It’s been an incredible week of varied music, as I reviewed the performances of X-Factor winner Leona Lewis at Bournemouth International Centre, plus 80’s pop n rock group T’Pau on their 25th anniversary tour and unsigned act ‘The Songbirds’ who are a female vocal pop duo, who cover chart hits from the likes of Emile Sande to Adele & Norah Jones. The four major record labels still forward me albums to review, from the likes of Mark Owen, whose new solo album “The Art of Doing Nothing” is now released, plus Eliza Doolittle’s summer single, “Big when I was Little”. Week 2 I interviewed Keith Chegwin, for Solent Life magazine and he just can’t wait to take part in “The Nutcracker On Ice” at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre this November! In Keith’s words, he said “Without meaning to sound twee, I’ve always wanted to perform at The Mayflower, as I used to drive past and think…one day, I will get to work in that theatre”. He told me that many Saturday Swapshops took place in Southampton and one year they had the Hampshire Police to answer to as stolen radios were being swapped, without their knowledge! The full interview will appear in this publication later in the year. Week 3 At long last, Bournemouth’s eye sore (the former I-Max building) has now been demolished and has been replaced with an open air events space. Bournemouth’s Symphony Orchestra will be launching the area on 29th June and I am working with New Forest Water Park who intend on installing a Flow-Rider system on the waterfront. Flow Riders engage with surfing, wakeboarding & flowboarding and can be found on the luxury cruise liners such as Oasis of the Seas and would make for an incredible attraction in Bournemouth, so let’s hope it materialises. Week 4 On the 27th July 2012 I started 5 weeks work in press operations at London Olympics and it truly was an incredible experience. The opening ceremony marked a very proud moment for British people all over the world and the stadium was transformed when it portrayed our history. Concert promoter, Live Nation, will be holding headline concerts in and around the former stadium which has now been re-branded as “The Queen Elizabeth Country Park” and I will be working with them at the concerts and hope that I also find the time to witness Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake rock the stage! See you next month…Jane Dean

THE COP AND

THE MILKMAN 32…

.co.uk • JULY 2013

Starsky and Hutch set new standards in television cops around the globe and the title characters became iconic; was this a good thing or a bad thing for a serious actor such as Paul Michael Glaser? “It turned out, in the end, to be a valuable experience; you cannot look back on your life and not marvel at how it all turned out and happened,” explained Paul, “Starsky was a brilliant role; it is just that I was not that comfortable with the success and the fame thing. He was a wonderful character for me as I could play him in so many different ways and on so many levels; he could be serious, funny or madcap.” Paul began his career in straight theatre so he sees Fiddler as a wonderful chance to enjoy himself in stage musical as well as have a welcome return to England. “I have always been partial to England, I was over there in 1964 as a student and although I never attended them I used to go and sit in on the lectures at RADA and at LAMDA the two big acting schools. “I have turned 70 now, and that really is a strange sounding number when you connect it to your age; but it is good that I feel healthy as Tevye is a tough role. I expect I will lose a little weight and it will be a challenge but we have a wonderful director in Craig and it sounds like a great cast, including seventeen members being actor/musicians and being on stage – the whole thing is going to be wonderful.” Does he see the production as being a challenge? “More of an opportunity than a challenge; very exciting as there are many things that interest me about the character of Tevye. He is a man on so many levels; and that even involves talking with the audience; he has a great sense of humour, he is playful and on one level he even wants to be a thinker. One of his lines is that he wants to discuss the Holy books with a learned man; he is an everyman and that includes his relationship with the audience as an equal partner. “As Tevye you are talking to the whole theatre but you are also talking to the individual. When I ask a question of the audience I will just have to wait and see how it works,” continued Paul. “We have to start with the concept of story-telling, that is the most sacred thing we do in our lives, and the challenge with any story is to bring us all together with a commonality, a connection between audience and story-teller. “The playing of a character has always been a process of taking off masks rather than putting them on. So, when acting you can change your posture, your look or your accent; you can change so many things on the outside but your objective is that thing from inside the actor and that is

the common link between you and the audience. The challenge for any actor is to entertain and at the same time touch people and the way I do that is to find that common place between the audience and myself in character and by taking off any mask I would be wearing. “I have been studying the character of Tevye and the fact that he manages to break down the so-called ‘fourth-wall’, that imaginary barrier between stage and audience, there is so much in his relationship with the members of the audience. “When I leave England after this production of Fiddler I would hope that I have offered love and been given love by the people who come to see me as Tevye, to touch people and be touched by them. I would like to leave lots of good memories and feel as if I have been there for all the people as well as for myself. Theatre is such an actors’ medium and I want to make the most of that.” Finally, and still with a couple of months till curtain up, how was the beard coming along? “The beard is incredible, lovely, and I already feel myself stroking it. My friends at the gold club already have begun to call me Tevye, but because it is white some of them are now calling me Santa!” Paul Michael Glaser was talking to David Rose-Massom. As well as playing David Starsky in the iconic Starsky and Hutch TV series (four seasons 1975 – 1979) opposite David Soul; Paul has also appeared in over 50 stage roles in regional, repertory, off-Broadway and Broadway theatre in the US. His film credits include Something’s Gotta Give alongside Diane Keaton. His directorial credits include several episodes of Starsky and Hutch, Miami Vice, Robbery Homicide Division and Judging Amy, as well as the children’s film Kazaam. He is also a writer of poetry and children’s literature This new production of Fiddler On The Roof is directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood, the nation’s favourite Strictly Come Dancing judge and master of the musical stage.

Fiddler On The Roof is one of the most popular and beloved of all stage musicals with the lead role of Tevye, the local milkman, becoming an iconic character in the world of musical theatre and film; now another iconic character is due to take over this stunning role when the newest version of Fiddler on the Roof gets its World Premiere in Southampton. Paul Michael Glaser, better known to many as Starsky from the TV show with his cop partner Hutch, will be playing the lead role and he spoke to Solent Life from his home in Los Angeles.

Whiteley Village

The High Street on your doorstep 98 weeks to build at a cost of £84m, with 58 stores, a market square with seven independent traders, 1500 car parking spaces, 1000 jobs created and all in an area twice the size of Wembley Stadium – welcome to Whiteley and a whole new shopping experience. 38…

.co.uk • JULY 2013

B

ig crowds were expected, but nothing like the 30,000 people that turned up on the opening day of this new shopping experience. Solent Life was among the crowds who thronged the broad avenues of this new ‘High Street’ of retail therapy and dining and it was an impressive sight. Imagine a traffic free high street, all the major stores, wide walkways so, no matter how busy, there is still room to breathe and move, surrounded by pristine, glass fronted shops and stores reflecting sunlight. Cafes with pavement tables and only fresh air and not car fumes to inhale, you really can

wake up and smell the coffee as it is bought to your table. The idea from day one, when it was decided that the old Whiteley had served and outgrown its purpose, was to build a whole new centre. Not to refurbish what was there but to tear it all down, right down to a hole in the ground, and begin again; to build a bright, new, shining shopping experience that would be enjoyable and fun. For many years we have heard and read the media ringing out the death knell of the traditional High Street; not just as a shopping venue but as a way of life. With each generation though, tastes and desires have changed, there maybe good reason why old style main street shopping was on the wane; maybe because people just did not want it. Maybe because people have tired

whiteley

of an experience that is fraught with tedious journeys through inadequate road systems to search for parking, which is often difficult to access, scattered across the town and whose existence is focused on revenue from those wishing to bring trade to the town. Nowadays the shopping trip is not just about buying clothes and accessories; it has become a social experience. In addition to the needs of the shopper; in scouring their favourite stores and brands, it needs to satisfy the café culture and dining, with variety and fine food. ‘Shopping’ now extends beyond just the shopping hours and has to satisfy those leisure needs, entertainment and social gathering, furthermore it has to be accessible with ample free parking. Whiteley now brings a modern town centre experience with easy access from the motorway; and with that parking also – perhaps this is exactly what people want! Whiteley, as a centre for business and enterprise, has grown amazingly over the last couple of decades and all those people who have been stuck on the doorstep of work can now enjoy a little bit of city life; mingle in cafes and coffee shops and enjoy their break from the daily grind. One of the refreshing aspects and a link back to the old days of town centre shopping is that the local businesses have not been forgotten and pushed aside by the national giants like M & S, Paperchase, W H Smith and all the other popular stores, local

companies such as Fabulous Bakers, Solent Cycles, Montagu’s café bar and bistro, Whiteley Fruiterers, Little Soles, Xpress Beauty and even a local estate agent with Walker and Waterer are well represented. In many respects the new Whiteley centre has taken a step back into the past, and in concept, not only reflects the heritage of the tradition High Street experience but adds the perfect blend of style, modern features and convenience that make this a place for today. It has already, within just weeks of opening, proved to be a success; the sheer visitor numbers prove that. It is a fine testament to the designers and builders that the little things have not been forgotten, comfortable seating with the shelter of young trees and small artistic sculptures everywhere. On either side of one bench-seat a pair of bronze otters, stand on hind legs and look across at each other while outside Montagu’s, a family of rabbits sit on the sides of the planters. Whiteley is, in more ways than one, a breath of fresh air, it is a great place to shop, to socialise, to just sit and take coffee as the world passes by, it has a good choice of places to eat and the latest in gift ideas and fashion. But, and this is what I like best of all, it is just a nice place to go to. The High Street has returned but it is now out where people need it and can reach it; and it is a clean safe environment to be in.

PUSHING THE BOAT OUT Definition of RIB (noun) a small open boat with a fibreglass hull and inflatable rubber sides; Origin: acronym from rigid inflatable boat As grown ups we probably all know how to purchase a new or second hand car; we pop down to the forecourt, something takes our fancy and the wife likes the colour and a few days later it is driven away. But, how does one buy a boat and where do you go to get the right one and all the right advice; what seems like an investment toward fun suddenly becomes a myriad of questions and just the sheer panic of what to choose. Solent Life recently went to Porchester to visit the waterfront ‘forecourt’ of new and used RIB business JBT Marine; Tom Sanderson is the Sales Manager. “Basically a rib is a solid hulled boat with an inflatable collar which not only offers added buoyancy to the boat but also makes it more stable than a normal rigid hulled craft,” he explained. “It feels much safer and offers a softer ride with the narrower hull cutting through the water. “Other advantages, especially to someone new to boating is that with the soft inflated sides it is easier when coming alongside a pontoon or when re-boarding after swimming. I would also say it is safer as a family boat with it being easier to get on and off.” Assistant Sales Manager, Jeremy Jerwood, gave me a tour of the quayside sales area and took me through purchasing a rib. Within moments of standing alongside the range of new ribs lined up I wanted to get one on the water! “We sell the Ballistic range of ribs and they start at 5.5mtr boats, which are licensed to carry seven people, and go up to 7.8mtr and it takes time to get your head around the size of boat you need. How many in your family? What are you using the boat for? A whole range of queries go through people’s minds for which, once we have the boats in front of you, there is the chance to make a considered decision.” As for which engine with which boat, there is plenty of expertise on board as both Tom and Jeremy have spent a lifetime on the water and working with boats. “Once we know what you need the boat for we can offer the set-up to best suit you and your family. All of these new craft are rugged, well made and quality hi-spec, all built to a very high standard. This 5.5mtr rib would be, I suppose, the car equivalent of a BMW 3 series, well built, good for the family

but still fun to drive.” Well, I did keep trying to see the boat ‘forecourt’ in the same terms as a car showroom! “Except these ribs on rough water are akin to a 4x4 going over rough terrain, they are built for the conditions!” he added. “Budget is always a big question, as well as what are the extras once a choice is made!” continued Jeremy. “Most first time buyers go for a new boat as it comes complete with a package of gear, training to RYA standard as well as the VHF radio course which everyone on a boat should have. And, on top of that of course there is the simple joy of having a shiny new toy.” Those new boats, complete with engines, trailer and training, begin at a touch under £30,000 and head up toward £70,000. If that is a little steep JBT Marine have one of the biggest displays of high quality, and professionally serviced, used ribs with anything up to 30 boats on show at any one time; and with their waterside location it is easy to put the boat on the water and go for a test run. “Our price range for used craft begins around the £15,000 to £20,000 price range and the added extras are the VHF license at £100 and a further £250 for the RYA Level 2 Powerboat license.” JBT Marine’s waterside show area is an enjoyable place to be and nothing like the commercial boatyards of old, there are pleasant quayside areas for waiting for friends, or for your boat to be put into the water, and Tom and Jeremy, although in the business of selling boats, are keen to ensure that every client is safe on the water, and happy with the boat choice they have made – they are more than aware that one day you may want a bigger and better rib. “Safety first begins with the right boat and engine package and if you have the right advice to begin with then your boating days will be much more fun. By making an informed decision about your boat and what comes with buying a boat, then the more fun everyone will have – and trust me there is little on the water that is more fun than a rib!”

Shirley Robertson OBE, was born in 1968 in Dundee, Shirley started sailing at the age of 7 in a Mirror Miracle dinghy. Her successful sailing career culminated, not just by winning gold at the Millennium Olympic Games in Sydney but then making it into the history books by becoming the first British woman to win two Olympic Gold Medals at consecutive games by following up her Sydney win with another Gold in Athens 2004. www.shirleyrobertson.com

There was no one better qualified to promote the Aberdeen Asset Cowes Week than double-Olympic sailing gold medallist Shirley Robertson OBE and Solent Life editor Dave Hill took the opportunity to ask her what made Cowes Week so special as both a regatta and as a place to soak up the party atmosphere. “I have lived here in Cowes for some 30 years now and sailed in many Cowes Week regattas and it is still the magic of the event that draws all us sailors back,” she explained to Dave while sitting in the pavilion of the Royal Yacht Squadron which has unrivalled views across the Solent. “First of all I love Cowes, I love the fact everyone seems to know everyone else; the town is very special to me. “Whenever I return to the island from an event or an assignment, the moment the Red Jet slows down as it comes into Cowes it is a magical moment for me. “I have seen a lot of the world and what it has to offer through sailing but nothing is quite like here; it is unique! I open my curtains in the morning and look across the Solent each day and I can see what happens on the water; we love the Solent, its tides, its rocks and its thousands of boats; we simply love it! “For my first Cowes Week I was one of a bunch of girls that arrived in a little Beneteau yacht to take part; and even now all these years later you never feel as if you have Cowes or the Solent in your pocket, you never quite get it. “The residents of the Isle of Wight are very proud of Cowes Week, they want the people to come here, and equally as sailors we are very proud of our event and of our island. You don’t have to enjoy sailing to enjoy what Cowes Week has on offer; with a glorious backdrop of the racing yachts as they finish so very close to the shore you can sit and watch this incredible spectacle from start to finish. “Sailing here is really a celebration of all the classes and the fun of racing on the Solent. Then at the end of the day, when the sailing is done and the picnics are packed away, it is time for the parties to begin. The amazing thing is that some of the sailors are able to drink till the early hours, still very much in their yachting gear, while others prefer to dress up in their swish clothes for the Black-Tie events; and yet they will all make it to the start line for the next day’s racing.” Shirley Robertson was talking to: Solent Life editor, Dave Hill. 60…

cowes | week Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week www.aamcowesweek.co.uk will have all the information needed for best vantage points of all the events, including the fireworks.

FIREWORK SPECTACULAR: Cowes Week, now sponsored by Aberdeen Asset Management, has existed as a regatta for 187 years and the highlight of the week for all -, sailors and non-sailors, Islanders and those thousands of onlookers lining the shores of the mainland, is the Friday night firework display. The fireworks display has taken place on the final Friday of Cowes Week since the very earliest days of the regatta and is viewed by many as an intrinsic part of the onshore festivities and recently it was announced by the Cowes Fireworks Committee that Pains Fireworks will be back at the helm this year. Not only that but this year will see the return of the counting fireworks and this year’s display will be given a dramatic Big Blast Off! Pains have a long heritage with the Cowes fireworks display and the first recorded link with the regatta in the Pains Fireworks ledgers is August 1862. The connection between the two organisations spans 140 years and the company is therefore delighted to have been re-appointed after a break of a decade, during which time they’ve been formulating plenty of plans from the sidelines and are all set to put on a spectacular display this year.

Commenting on what people can expect from this year’s display, David Alvis, of Pains Fireworks, said: “For those that remember the Cowes displays of old, there remains the lasting memory of the whole audience loudly counting along with a special series of fireworks; the “counting fireworks of Cowes” are still talked about even today. “With the return of Pains to Cowes, we think this is the year to bring this participation back to the display. It isn’t anything more than just a great bit of fun. Half way through the display everything will stop and with the help of a little prompting over the PA system everyone will be encouraged to join in and become, uniquely, part of the show. Furthermore to add to the theme of participation, we also want all those watching the display from boats to join in with the start of the display; the Big Blast Off. A series of maroons and ship’s horn blasts to be responded to by all the vessels in the Harbour, will create a cacophony of sound that will introduce to all a spectacular display that is truly a fireworks show that can only be Cowes.” JULY 2013 •

It is one of the more demanding jobs - that of being an hotel manager, well imagine how much harder that role is when the hostelry in question just happens to be a fort in the middle of the Solent; James Pike is Deputy General Manager of the luxurious Spitbank Fort and in a rare quiet moment he sat down with Solent Life Editor Dave Hill and talked about the unique skill set required on a daily basis to run this spectacular and unique ‘island’ retreat…

job of

s m a e dr

E

ssentially, working alongside General Manager Mark Watts, we are just hotel managers, but on a daily basis, this unique fortress retreat sitting out in the middle of the Solent throws up many challenges. If there is such a thing as a typical day it begins at 6am when I check the weather and head into the Departure Lounge for the team briefing and to ready the boat. The Departure Lounge, in Royal Clarence Marina, is designed and furnished like the lounge of a classic luxury cruise liner and is the meeting place for our clients and guests before we take them onto the water and over to the Fort for their experience of our private island retreat. James described their early briefing session on the fort with the rest of team preparing for the days events, “Although we do have all of the skills and ability to command our boats, Mark and I are often just passengers, especially when making supply runs out to Spitbank Fort and we can use that time to catch up via Wi-Fi with E-mails and reply to client and potential client queries, rarely giving us chance to enjoy the amazing views out on the Solent. There cannot be many hotel management teams who have to type out E-mails while bouncing across the waves in a rib!

“Once we arrive at the Fort we become deck-hands, putting out fenders, tying off alongside the jetty and winching the boat up from the water – we are all very much a hands-on team. When the team are all on the Fort we then have another briefing about the day’s or weekend’s events and the clients’ individual requirements; then the experienced team begins the set-up to ensure everything is just right for the guests’ arrival. Once that is underway we would head back to the marina shore base in Gosport and personally welcome the guests for whatever function or stay has been booked. That could be a corporate event, an overnight stay, short break or even one of our very successful and popular Thursday and Sunday lunches. “Once the clients are ready, it is at that moment that our job changes from hotel management to ferrymen, and that in itself throws up a whole new set of responsibilities, which are mostly in seamanship and the care and comfort of our clients; whether we are actually driving one of the boats or just acting as crew. “Whether you are a couple on a romantic break, family, group of friends or a company on a business retreat, Spitbank Fort always feels as if it is yours and for your exclusive use; indeed, JULY 2013 •

many of our clients do book it for that exclusivity as well as its uniqueness. Again, this adds diversity to our roles as hotel managers as we often cater for product launches or, as it was recently, a fashion photo-shoot with a supermodel. Many of our corporate clients also book the Fort because of its unique location as it offers complete privacy. That privacy is doubly important for celebrities who wish to escape their hectic lifestyle and spend a few days with friends away from staring eyes, and all our staff are subject to confidentiality agreements. “Our owners, Clarenco, and all the staff are also very aware that we are the caretakers of some important heritage; we have to think about the future of the Forts, as a company we own three in the Solent, operating under the banner of Solent Forts. Currently under renovation is No Man’s Land Fort which will offer guests a choice of large reception and banqueting areas, as well as an indoor spa and up to 30 luxury bedroom suites, whilst future plans will transform Horse Sand Fort into a time capsule museum for historic visits. The future of these historic ‘follies’ is in good hands as the company operate them as not just a business but also as a conservation project and that is a matter of personal pride for our owners. It is important to remember that this unusual hotel is an old building and maintenance is an ongoing thing; but unlike other hotels we have to ferry people such as electricians and plumbers by boat out to the Fort along with their tools and spare parts. “So much of our working day is spent ensuring our clients’ enjoyment of this unique experience, and also driving forward

the business side of things. Unlike many hotel management teams we operate from two completely separate offices, one on dry land at the Departure Lounge and the other out on Spitbank Fort and modern technology such as iPads enable us to work efficiently from either or both locations. “Both Mark and I are aware that we have fantastic jobs; one moment we are office worker, hotelier and caterer as we would be in any hotel situation, but then we are ferrymen and boat crew. We do have some time to relax and often we can be seen on the Fort fishing, but our catch heads straight to the kitchen for the chef to prepare and place on the guests’ menus; food rarely gets fresher than that! “Our work may involve more than is usually expected in hotel management but the pride and satisfaction that Mark, myself and the whole team get, is not just about selling rooms and occupancy rates, but is more about the visitor delight that leaves them with memories of a unique experience on what is a stunning and unique venue; the Solent Forts are something special and that also makes our jobs something special.” www.clarenco.com/solent-forts/ Spitbank Fort Departure Lounge Royal Clarence Marina, Weevil Way, Gosport PO12 1FX

Country Retreat If it’s a weekend break away from home that you need, has it crossed your mind that you might find just what you are looking for on your doorstep without that long drive to another part of the country; and then another drive home – no?, then read on…

W

ell, why not have a total change of scenery; stay for two nights, or up to a week, in a beautifully converted Victorian stable set among the rolling hills and countryside of the South Downs National Park. With some stunning walks and just a short stroll away from a hamlet that ‘The Times’, back in March named the best village in the country; all this and it is probably no more than forty minutes or so from anywhere in Hampshire. Victoria Cobden and her farmer husband Simon have carried out the sympathetic conversion which has easily married the modern convenience, such as dishwashers, with the original rustic charm and old oak beams of the stables. “Coming here to West Meon is a perfect country escape for couples, families, dog owners and even horse owners as we have stabling facilities.” Victoria and Simon had invited Solent Life to spend a two night break at the stable and our first thought was that it

was not far enough away from our front door to make that much difference; but once we had arrived at our country retreat, we realised the scenery was different, the air was fresher and it felt as if we were in a far off county. Waiting on our arrival were a selection of basics; bread, milk and even a pretty box of some very moreish home made cakes and a bottle of wine. For those on a longer break there are even sausages and bacon from the local butchers. As we tucked into the cakes Victoria told us more about the stable. “It was originally a Victorian built stable block and surrounding it is our working farm, we have sheep, cattle and of course horses,” she said, “All of our visitors are more than welcome to check out the farm and when the time is right they get a close up look at the lambs and the calves.

Westbury Manor Stables is a luxury, self-catering, flint stable block turned into a two bedroom holiday cottage, with a twin room and a very comfortable double bedroom.

“It was such a lovely building that it needed a new lease of life and this conversion to a self-catering cottage seemed to be an ideal use for it. We have a small family run farm here of some 200 acres and it is great to see the stable in use almost every day we are very proud of how it has turned out.” Stepping out of the split stable door and turning right up the farm track it leads to fields and footpaths with walks across acres of beautiful countryside. Victoria told us we could walk for days and still avoid civilisation, the village is a short walk away, there are local trout fishing facilities, an award winning pub and an award winning shop. Prices and availability are on the website but our two-night stay would have cost just £220, less in the dead of winter even though the cottage will still be warm and cosy, and climbing gently toward around £700 for a week at the height of summer.

“Because we own and operate The Stable it means we can keep our prices at a reasonable level plus we are always here to answer any queries guests and potential guests may have when arriving or booking; agents cannot do that for us,” continued Victoria as her two daughters laughed and giggled just outside the doorway. “It is quiet and peaceful out here and yet we are close enough to the likes of Petersfield, Alton or even Winchester if our guests decide they want to get back to a town way of life for a few hours. Once inside and with the curtains drawn you could be a hundred miles away from everywhere. It is a rural idyll here, where, even though our guests may be less than an hour from home, it feels as if they are deep in a countryside retreat.”

Gardening in

July Relax and enjoy your garden in all its glory this month. There’s still work to be done: weeding, deadheading, cutting back and tidying, but July is such a rewarding month, find time to sit back and appreciate your garden. Bee inspired, create a buzz

E

ven if you only have a small courtyard garden, patio or balcony, you can still do your bit with some wildlife attracting plants. Garsons has a great range of compact Buddleia ‘Buzz’, a food haven for butterflies. Verbena bonariensis is also loved by butterflies and the new compact variety, Verbena Lollipop is even more versatile. Both varieties work well in a cottage garden or a more contemporary setting. Other wildlife-friendly plants include the penstemon, with gorgeous trumpet-shaped flowers in pink, purple, white and red. Often called summer foxglove, it provides nectar through till autumn. There are many varieties of sedum at Garsons. We love Sedum ‘Purple Emperor’, with its rich purple foliage, which becomes entirely covered with starry pink flowers. It’s a great food source for bees and butterflies from July till September. Bees are so important to the circle of life, look out for bee friendly logos on our plant labels, to help them through the season.

Our plant of the month is the dahlia Dahlias are enjoying a return to popularity. With many excellent recent introductions, they offer a wide range of flower types, often with very showy, double forms in warm vibrant colours. Dahlias are great performers in the summer border, in patio containers or as cut flowers, often flowering until the first frosts. Dahlias are easy to grow, but need winter protection. They’re tolerant of a wide range of soil types and situations but are best planted in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Keep well watered and once flowers appear, feed with a high potash liquid feed every two weeks from July to early September. For giant blooms, restrict the number of flowering stems to three to five per plant; for smaller blooms allow seven to ten flowering stems per plant. Bedding dahlias need no staking or disbudding; just pinch out the growing tip to encourage bushiness, and deadhead regularly. We have a wide range of dahlia varieties at Garsons, including the popular Dark Angel series with its handsome dark foliage, a great back drop to the showy flowers. For a container we have a select patio series, compact varieties only growing to 60cm

Grow your own Tomatoes should be ripening; leave them on the vine until they’re ripe and juicy. Pick soft fruit regularly to stop them becoming over-ripe. It’s a good move to check all your seasonal fruit and veg daily to enjoy at its best. You can still sow seeds for spring onions, lettuce and beetroot. Make use of your garden herbs, especially as snipping them back encourages fresh growth.

Enjoy July in the garden 110…

CREATING A FINANCIAL LEGACY FOR YOUR FAMILY Raising a child is a costly business - nappies, clothes, pocket money and school trips are just the tip of the iceberg. It doesn’t get any easier once they reach adulthood age. The chances are high that they will need financial help to fund a gap year, or to get a foot on the property ladder.

But looking after your children doesn’t end when they start carving out a career and have a family of their own. In all likelihood you will want to create a financial legacy to ensure that the wealth you have created is preserved, protected and passed on to them. Preserving as much of your wealth as possible requires careful estate planning; otherwise you may not pass on as much wealth as you anticipate. Inheritance tax (IHT), which is just one barrier to the transfer of wealth, is a 40 per cent tax imposed on the worldwide estate of anyone who is UK-domiciled on all assets above the nil rate band of £325,000. The nil rate band can be passed to a surviving spouse, if not used, increasing the survivor's nil rate band to up to £650,000. The threshold is normally updated each year in the Budget, in line with inflation, but the Coalition has said that it will now be frozen until April 2015. One of the simplest IHT mitigation tools is a Will. Not only can a well drafted Will mitigate IHT, it is also crucial for anyone wanting to protect their family from a huge headache after they die. Only with an appropriately drafted Will can you be certain that your estate will go to the right people. If you do not have a valid Will, you risk depriving your family of their home, increasing the inheritance tax (IHT) burden and leaving parts of your estate in the wrong hands. In addition to Wills, Trusts can also help you to protect and preserve your estate as they allow you give away assets but restrict or direct how and when they are used. There are many different types of Trusts, some straightforward and others very complicated. A common use of a Trust is to hold assets on behalf of a child until they are old enough to look after their own money. However, it is vital that you seek expert help before you take the plunge because there may be income tax or capital gains tax as well as Inheritance Tax implications that need to be considered. To ensure that the assets are invested in accordance with the terms of the Trust you should ensure that you appoint trustees who have the necessary skills and knowledge. It can often make sense to use professional trustees rather than lay trustees. Family members often find it difficult to act objectively. Money and family arguments are often driven by emotion rather than what is correct and appropriate. The appointment of a neutral, well-practiced professional trustee would avoid such conflicts. Professional trustees will also have the expertise, specialist knowledge and experience to identify potential problems, provide solutions and promote good governance. Another method for helping to reduce any potential IHT burden is gifting away money before you die. This can be done through potentially exempt transfers (PETs) which revolve around the famous “seven year rule”. Put simply, if you wish to pass assets to family and friends during your lifetime, these gifts will only be made free of IHT providing you survive seven years from the date of making the gift. If you die within this seven-year period, potentially the value of the gifted assets will be added back into your estate albeit only the value 112…

.co.uk • JULY 2013

calculated by the date of the gift and not any subsequent growth or increase in value. There are some lifetime gifts that are exempt from any IHT. You can gift up to £3,000 a year, which can be divided between as many people as you like. You are also allowed to use the previous year’s allowance if it has not been used. Parents are each allowed to give away £5,000 to their children when they get married, while grandparents can give £2,500. Meanwhile, if you are saving on behalf of your child or children it makes sense to ensure that the method used is as tax-efficient as possible – and to start as early as possible. A Junior ISA offers parents, grandparents, other relatives and friends the opportunity to invest regular contributions or lump sums on behalf of a child in a flexible and tax-efficient way. Replacing the Child Trust Fund, the Junior ISA provides the same tax advantages as a standard ISA; tax-efficient interest on cash deposits, no further liability to income tax on dividends and no capital gains tax. Of course, the favourable tax treatment for Junior ISAs may not be maintained in the future and is subject to changes in legislation. One existing solution is a Bare Trust, which can be used to shelter investments in funds or single shares, or even property, on behalf of children, grandchildren, godchildren, nieces or nephews, and which can be accessed at 18 years of age. The Trust can be used to offset any gains against the child's annual capital gains tax allowance and any income against their income tax allowance. If you are the parent, however, you are liable for tax on any income above £100 a year from the investments. Setting up a pension for a child (you are allowed to invest a maximum of £3,600 gross a year on their behalf) is one of the most efficient financial gifts you can make. You get tax relief on the contribution and the child benefits from tax-free growth. Because the money is invested over such a long term – up to 55 years or more – you have the luxury of taking a unique long view on the investment strategy, which presents the opportunity to really go for maximum returns. On top of all this, if your child is financially dependent on you, you need to make sure you have adequate provisions in place to replace your income in the event of death, illness or disability. Being a parent brings with it rich rewards, from watching your children walk their first steps, to applauding them when they walk on stage to collect their graduation scroll. But such rich rewards do not have to be only emotional; they can be real too, with a little foresight and some expert financial help.

THE 2013 Veuve Clicquot GOLD CUP THE 2013 VEUVE CLICQUOT GOLD CUP One of the world’s leading polo events… Cowdray Park Polo Club recently announced an impressive entry of seventeen teams for this year’s Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup, the world’s premier polo tournament at this level. The Gold Cup for the British Open Polo Championship was launched at Cowdray Park in 1956 and ranks alongside the Argentine and US Opens in world significance. It has been sponsored by leading champagne house Veuve Clicquot since 1995. The sport’s leading players, including seven 10-goalers – the highest ranking a polo player can achieve – will be seen in action at the stunning venue of Cowdray Park over the four week period of the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup tournament starting on 25th June, leading to quarter finals over the weekend of 13/14th July, semi-finals on 18th July and the prestigious final of the most coveted trophy in polo on Sunday 21st July. It is a day when celebrities turn out for sport and sunshine and people picnic at various spots on the pitch edge and surrounding the action. If you have never been to a polo match then be prepared for a day of exciting action. On the massive polo ground the action is fast and furious, with each player, having several ponies available to ride, quickly changing mounts. No quarter is given by horse or rider when chasing down the ball; pony leans against pony whilst at full gallop with small lumps of turf flying from the fast moving hooves.

.co.uk • JULY 2013

Come mid chukka, like half time in football, the crowd join in with the traditional treading in of the divots; this is where, the watching crowd wander the pitch and replaces all the divots to ensure safe riding for horse and rider. The Draw for the Veuve Clicquot Gold Cup took place in early June when Patrons, players and Team Managers gathered to take part in an open draw which decided match-play in the league phase of the tournament.

For details of a great day out of sporting action, picnics and celebrity spotting and all the ways of how to enjoy this prestigious polo tournament go to… www.cowdraypolo.co.uk

constructed open-air amphitheatre in the heart of the South Downs National Park. First up is Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. It is a hot July in the summer of 1964 and Brighton Pier is hosting its usual British holiday festivities. The star-crossed lovers find themselves in the middle of a cultural clash as gangs of Mods and Rockers descend on the city. Set to a classic British pop score soundtrack, Romeo and Juliet combines lyrical poetry, comic characters and some of Shakespeare’s best fight scenes. Then there is a production of Midsummer Night’s Dream set in the vintage summer of 1977. This ‘Dream’ takes us on a whistle stop tour of the great songs of that year. This is accessible Shakespeare for all ages a high energy generation game of chaos and fun. It takes full advantage of the beautiful amphitheatre. Tickets at £12 per person (£10 concessions) and at £15 on Friday and Saturday nights. Theatregoers are invited to bring their own low-backed seating or blankets, with canvas cover from the elements provided. Picnics are encouraged, and luxury hampers can be ordered in advance. Doors open at 6pm.
