New Planning Model for Large Water Projects

Finding a better planning model for large water projects

Nature of large infrastructure projects Projects dealing with large water infrastructure to combat water solutions are usually costly. A lot of these projects are often built to last decades. Therefore, it is essential to take into account the long-term environment in which they will operate.

Challenge of long-term predictions The lack of knowledge on the nature and consequences of climate change on precipitation forecasts and regional temperatures increases the uncertainty. Adding extra capacity in infrastructure for water solutions can, therefore, incur a high risk of expensive overbuilding in areas that lack resources.

Solving the problem A flexible, adaptive option allows for the incremental increase in the dam’s height, significantly lowering the risk of overbuilding infrastructure for water solutions. It also helps maintain a similar level of reliability of the water supply when compared to having a large dam from the beginning.

Solution creators Companies like J-WAFS have funded projects that come with the potential to change the provision of water around the world. These projects range from low-cost water filters to sustainable infrastructure (as showcased above), coupled with the research on aspects like efficiency and scalability of innovative water solutions.
