Greetings from Energime University, Happily, summer is upon us and many of our children will be spending time outdoors. This is one of the best seasons of the year to go outside, have fun and get reacquainted with Mother Earth. Unfortunately, children today spend less time playing outdoors, losing out on learning the wonders of Nature. As children spend less and less time outdoors, they lose the opportunity to bond with Mother Nature. This phenomenon has been termed Nature Deficit Disorder. When children are unaware of something’s value, they will lack a reason to defend it. So how do we open the door to the wonders of Nature? This is where Julie and Rich Bronson come in. The husband and wife team have established H.O.P.E. Gardens, a place where thousands of children and community members can participate in harvesting the bounty provided by Mother Earth. Their belief is “Together we are Helping Other People Eat”. A place where thousands of children and community members have participated in harvesting the bounty provided by Mother Earth.
Dr. Julia Scalise writes about Earthing, a simple yet powerful practice that improves both our lives and our health. During the last two years Greta Thunberg has taken the world by storm. With the simple act of sitting down in front of the Swedish Parliament on Fridays, she has galvanized millions of children around the world to join her in the fight against climate change. Greta proves that one person has the power to make a difference. Haseena Patel, from “Leave No Girl Behind”, has used her educational platform to empower young women all around the world. Last, but not least, we get a sneak peek “Behind the Scenes” at Energime University. William Sosinsky, Our Founder, lets us in on the developments and what’s been happening during the last 9 months. All in all, we have been a busy crew. So here we are, Energime University Calling out to the Energime University Community. Come and share your adventures with us. Enjoy your summer,

H.O.P.E. GARDENS “Eek! A bee! I don’t touch bugs! I won’t go in the garden.” By Julie Brunson This refrain is common as children first step into their school garden. The fearful reactions, resulting from the view that insects are the enemy, are examples of nature deficit disorder. Although scientists understand the important role that bees serve in pollination, many people are aware only that they sting. Richard Louv defined nature deficit disorder in his 2005 book, Last Child in the Woods, as the behavioral problems which result from people spending less time outdoors.[2] He suggests that “nature-deficit disorder is not meant to be a medical diagnosis but rather a description of the human costs of alienation from the natural world." While some people argue that this is an urban issue, I would suggest that it extends to all people. As an educator, I have witnessed the disconnect which occurs between children and the food they consume. I also believe that we as a community can collectively address this problem. H.O.P.E. Gardens (Helping Other People Eat) helps combat nature deficit disorder by helping children in urban and rural schools explore and learn from nature. Stress levels are at an all-time high and there is pressure on children to perform that would overwhelm even an adult. A survey last year by the American Psychological Association found a third of children ages 8 to 17 reported increasing stress levels. Another recent poll of adults moved stress up the ranks to among the top children's health concerns. The Whole Child report compiles studies showing how outdoor play leads to happier kids:
http://hopegardensgr.org/ www.energimeuniversity.org - April 2019
Children's stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces. Outdoor play teaches kids to collaborate and solve problems. They are more confident, creative and even nicer. hps://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/health-and-wellness/outdoor-play-linked-to-childrens-mental-health-20101008-16b4d.html.
Hope Gardens helps to combat these stress levels by using school gardens as a classroom and nature as a teacher. While educating our children in technology is vital, it is also important to make time and space for children to rest amidst their busy school schedules. By allowing children to explore and observe nature, we give them time to “breathe” and grow (pun intended). Hope Gardens uses a regenerative gardening approach, which involves growing food from seed to plate. This sustainable method grants the student hands-on knowledge as they explore nature for clues.
By the end of the garden program, the same children who refused to touch dirt and bugs become master gardeners who are eager to get their hands in the soil and experience new foods like cucamelons or Gete Okosomin squash.
www.energimeuniversity.org ~ July 2019
Not only does this experience combat nature deďŹ cit disorder, it places children in an environment which is known to reduce stress, and supplies opportunities for children to try eating healthy, plant-based foods. My hope is that school systems, parents, and communities will provide outdoor opportunities for children to engage with nature. Their little hearts are in our hands. Maybe it’s time for us all to take a walk in the woods. Last Child in the Woods https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nature_deďŹ cit_disorder

ABOUT H.O.P.E. GARDENS
The mission of Hope Gardens is to bring sustainable, no-till organic gardening practices to neighborhoods and communities that are challenged with finances, growing conditions and time. The organic “covering” method utilized provides a weed barrier which minimizes maintenance during the growing season while further enriching the soil for gardening. These environmentally-friendly and regenerative methods enable simple sustainability. Hope Gardens also offers a portfolio of services, from heirloom seed and plant stock, education, curriculum and consulting services that provide support, but also honors the dignity, value and independence that comes from people providing for themselves. Hope Gardens provides hands-on, regenerative gardening instruction in 9 schools in 4 school districts in West Michigan to children at every grade level.

Founders Rich and Julie Brunson’s journey of discovery began through life experiences of food insecurity. As a young adult, co-founder Rich Brunson was homeless and unsure where his next meal was coming from. Living this way made him long to find a way to bring food to those who might be in similar circumstances. It was during this time that the dream of H.O.P.E. (Helping Other People Eat) was born. Julie was the youngest of seven children being raised by a single mom. To help provide food for her family, she decided to grow vegetables in her backyard. She loves to tell the story of the time she asked her teenage daughter to pick the tomatoes and instead of picking only the fruit, pulled up the entire plant. She always adds how helpful it would have been to have her children learn how to garden at school. The beautiful ending to the story is that one of Hope Garden’s programs is in her neighborhood and the school Julie and her siblings attended as children. In 2013 Rich and Julie watched a documentary about Paul Gautschi and his regenerative method of organic gardening. Paul uses a system of mulching and compost to create, organic, fertile soil that resembles the natural growing environment that exists in the forest floor. Upon realizing and witnessing the efficacy of this process, they were reminded of Rich’s dream of H.O.P.E (Helping Other People Eat). In 2014 they took a trip to Washington State to experience Gautschi’s prolific, thirty year old gardens. The result was a newfound desire to share this growing system with community members to help solve food security problems and to empower families in growing their own food. The vision for HOPE Gardens was birthed.

The Importance of Overcoming "Nature Deficit Disorder” By Dr. Julia Scalise
Over the past few decades, sadly more and more humans are disconnecting from Nature and its benefits. So much so, that behavioral, mental, emotional, and physical issues are developing or escalating to the point that that the term “Nature Deficit Disorder” is now being used to describe the effect of this disconnection. Throughout history, humankind spent numerous hours outside working, sleeping, and living day to day, more intimately connected to the Earth’s subtle energy. Now our day to day existence oen keeps us sequestered from this healing energy force due to insulated dwellings, workplaces, and footwear that impedes this beneficial energy exchange. We are bombarded by electromagnetic frequencies from cell phones, computers and other electronic devices which disrupt our energy fields. This further necessitates our need and the importance of reconnecting
with our Earth’s healing energy force. Earthing, or Grounding as it is also sometimes called, is a growing movement. Whether it be walking barefoot on a beach or just placing your bare feet on the grass in your backyard, Earthing has been studied and proven to decrease inflammation, decrease pain, and promote better sleep. It calms the nervous system, reduces stress, assists with antioxidant absorption, increases energy, and decreases free radical build up. If placing your bare feet on the ground is not possible, due to location or weather constraints, just being out and about in nature has many of the same benefits as Earthing. Whether “Forest Bathing”, watching animal behavior in their natural environment, or just viewing birds gathering at your back yard feeder, these experiences can also produce feelings of calm and joy, improve your mood, and for some can even lower their blood pressure.
www.JuliaScalise.com
Gardening is another way to reconnect with nature. It doesn’t matter if you are growing flowers, herbs, vegetables, or trees, any type of gardening can bring positive benefits. Just participating in any gardening activity can make one more aware of and kinder to our environment. Earthing, “Nature Bathing “or Gardening are important for everyone, but are most important for our children. They are growing up in a culture that is much less physically connected to anyone or anything. They spend more time inside using electronic devices versus actual activities out in nature than any previous generation. With all the ability to access knowledge and information via the internet, and by mostly only virtually connecting with others or experiences, they are losing out on face to face interactions and hands-on experiences as a unique teacher. Their ongoing periods of isolation from other life forms (people, animals, insects, flora, & fauna) is starting to show alarming consequences in mood, behavior, learning abilities, and respect for those very same life forms.

Nature Deficit Disorder is real even if not officially recognized by medical manuals or diagnostic code books.
www.energimeuniversity.org ~ July 2019
But there is an easy and effective solution. Spend more time in Nature. There are so many benefits, some of which have already been stated. Add to those stated, the stimulation of colors, smells, textures, and quieter sounds, without feeling overwhelmed or electronically overstimulated, has been shown to enhance children’s development and mood.

When gardening is part of the experience for children, they can feel a sense of accomplishment and literally see the “fruits of their labor”. Children find ways to engage in teamwork and increase their opportunity for social interaction. Source: Google
Several studies have been conducted in relation to the benefits of gardening and time spent in nature environments. When results were analyzed, they found children had increased focus, prolonged attention, and a calming effect on their moods and spirits. Interestingly when removing children with special needs from a formal classroom to an outside setting and utilizing a “bugs versus books” education experience, it was found to enhance their creativity, and promote a sense of adventure

and accomplishment. Many of these children tended to become more open, communicative, and social.

Some other touted benefits of gardening specifically help those children that have difficulty with restricted diets due to allergies, sensitivities, and types I and II Diabetes. The hands on experience of growing food and herbs and spices make it easier for them to be more enthusiastic about dietary restrictions or change. No matter the age or special needs of anyone, everyone benefits when AVOIDING Nature Deficit. Whether Earthing, gardening, or just spending time in nature, in fresh air and sunshine or precipitation, one can improve their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual vitality and well-being. Are you ready to reconnect?

One Friday, a few years ago, a 14 year old girl decided to cut school. On that day she sat in front of the building 1 housing the Swedish Parliament. She was protesting her government's unwillingness to combat climate change. Now in 2019, two years aer 2her first protest, Time Magazine has named Greta Thunberg one of the 100 most influential people on the planet.
To say that Greta has taken the World by storm would be an understatement. She has already been recognized as a full blown climate change activist.3 4
Greta’s Fridays for the Future Organization's protests have grown into a worldwide movement. Millions of children all across the world have joined Greta on her “strikes”. --------------1. hps://www.newscienst.com/arcle/mg24132213-400-greta-thunberg-why-i-began-the-climate-protests-that-are-going-global/ 2. hp://me.com/collecon/100-most-influenal-people-2019/5567758/greta-thunberg/ 3. hps://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/mar/11/greta-thunberg-schoolgirl-climate-change-warrior-some-people-can-let-things-go-i-cant 4. hps://www.fridaysforfutures.org

The school strikes that she initiated have surged globally aer the COP24 conference. This UN Climate Change Summit was held in December of 2018. By March 2019, approxi -mately 1.4 million students had taken part in these protests, calling lawmakers around the world to address the catastrophic events looming on the horizon. Our Children, our Future Pioneers, are more than aware that current carbon emissions cause irreversible damage. It is destroying the air we breath, the water we drink, and the land we need for food. Everything we need to survive on the only planet we have.
These little ones are fighting, not only for their future, but also for the survival of everything that lives on this Earth. As actor Harrison Ford has stated many times, “We need Planet Earth. Planet Earth does not need us.” Of all Greta’s significant accomplishments, the one that has moved me the most has been her nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. If she wins, Greta will be the youngest recipient of this prestigious award. "From out of the mouths of babes” the message is clear: to stay alive, WE must save our planet.

EXPERT
www.energimeuniversity.org ~ July 2019
Since completing my fellowship at Johns Hopkins Kennedy-Krieger Institute in 1988, I have trained thousands of teaching staff across North America and in parts of Australia, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and Africa. Unfortunately, many of the same problems that existed back then in education continue to persist today, regardless of the calendar year or the postal code of the location. The fundamental fact is that our educational systems have become extremely complicated, regardless of where you live in the world. Each day, we walk into our schools, go inside our classrooms, arrive at our learning centers, or enter our therapy settings . . . and face trying to simply keep our heads above water. We all attempt to cover an incredible amount of information in an unrealistic, oen impossible, limited amount of time. Instruction in today’s educational system is typically delivered in days filled with multiple things to do and just not enough time in which to do them – with people oen feeling very
under-appreciated. Because of these challenges, we are frequently forced to take a reactive approach to instruction, rather than a proactive one, oen not even knowing what the other person is doing due to decreased collaboration time. I can attest to this because I spend a great deal of time in schools as the author and creator of the research-based teaching framework called T.H.E. P.A.C.T. I mentor, coach, and train educators both in general education and special education, showing them how to deal more effectively with these very problems and how to consistently get more results from their time and increased engagement from their students. The solution is quite simple: as educators, we need teach in the way that our brain works . . . in a sequence or order that makes sense to students, teachers, and parents. It is also important to remember that good content does not always equal sound instruction. A vast amount of curriculum content is not delivered in “bite-sized” chunks in the classroom
www.AboutThePact.com
- nor in a brain-based sequence - that best fosters understanding and demonstration of knowledge that our students need, regardless of their ability, in order to meet the standards.
Students of all abilities oen struggle to know the “WHAT, WHY, and HOW” of their instruction and how one lesson relates to the next. The answer is to deliver instruction in a “connect-the-dots” teaching and learning approach, sequentially achieving one step of mastery at a time – drawing a line from one lesson to the next - to significantly improve overall academic performance and increase meaningful participation.
It is critical that educators have a systematic roadmap that is easy to follow for teaching anything to anyone at any grade level. This roadmap needs to have “no expiration date,” so to speak; meaning that it could be used from preschool to high school. In addition, it is crucial that this curriculum solution work with students of ANY ability, from gied to special needs - and every learner in between, to bridge the gap between special education and general education and foster meaningful inclusion of students with disabilities using inclusive strategies. We need to simplify the process of learning, which in turn, simplifies teaching for teachers. T.H.E. P.A.C.T. methodology is a simple, research-based template system for learning and is of zero cost to implement since it is a conceptual framework. This delivery system of instruction is four basic steps – which means that it is easy to implement in a jam-packed school day. These four components are presented in the framework as a "Modular Model"
www.energimeuniversity.org ~ July 2019
– Learn About, Read About, Write About, and Talk About – aligned to the vital components of educational standards. Educators, from preschool to high school, are now gaining control of their instruction, decreasing their prep time, and meaningfully including learners with disabilities in their classrooms.
Teach the Way Our Brain Works This system of teaching provides "connect-the-dots" instruction, so that both students and teachers understand WHAT they are doing . . . and WHY. Regardless of subject or topic of study, teachers methodically walk students through “learning about” it, “reading about” it, “writing about” it, and “talking about” it. Educators do this in a way that allows students to feel anchored with the "HOW-TO-DO-IT" part - by using consistent teaching activities and predictable instructional tools - so the students focus on "what" they are learning, instead of "how" they are learning it. This significantly decreases cognitive load for students of all abilities.
www.AboutThePact.com
Here is an example of how to teach “Sustainability to students of any ability in a way that (1) increases their global citizenship and (2) improves their understanding of social responsibility using T.H.E. P.A.C.T. and the iPACT App System:
Learn About Sustainability
www.energimeuniversity.org ~ July 2019
Read About Sustainability
Write About Sustainability www.AboutThePact.com
The result is that teachers now know what to do: how to focus their time, stream - line their time, organize their time, and be successful at what they need to do when showing students how one lesson connects to the next. With this methodology, Talk About Sustainability teachers can reach students of all abilities in their classroom and build a true solid understanding of whatever material they are teaching. The longstanding MYTH in education is that learners receiving specialized services need much “different” teaching strategies than those that can be used in the classroom in order to succeed in their least restrictive environment or general education setting. The TRUTH of the matter is that these successful, research-based strategies for meaningful curriculum instruction should not only be used with our learners in special education, but also need to be used with students of ALL abilities, in ANY general education classroom, so that every student – and every teacher – has the greatest chance to succeed.

What if we could add $28 trillion to the global economy by 2025? What would that mean for the basic needs of children worldwide – children who, at present, are hungry, uneducated and unprovided for? How much more could we contribute towards our world being more sustainable and every species being protected? What if we could wipe out the HIV epidemic and give basic medical care to our entire global population? According to a Mckinsey Global Institute report in 2015, we can add that amount (which is 26 percent) to the global economy by 2025 if women in every country play an identical role in markets to men.1 Women and girls represent half the world’s population – they are largely an untapped human resource through disempowerment, inequality and poverty (created largely by their disempowerment and lack of equality). 1 1. hp://www.mckinsey.com/global-themes/employment-and-growth/how-advancing-womens-equality-can-add-12-trillion-to-global-growth
Leave No Girl Behind International
Since education and empowerment of girls and women is a solution, the questions are how do we approach this in today’s world and where do we begin? It was with these questions in mind that Leave No Girl Behind International was founded by South African sisters, Haseena Patel and Shameema Patel. The organisation focuses on empowerment through leadership development of girls age 12 to 18 years, and defines leadership as “the aligning of your thoughts, words and actions with your innate individuality.” All Leave No Girl Behind International programs can easily be implemented worldwide and are based on the organisation’s six principles: love, strength, courage, freedom, equality and unity. To ensure that education and empowerment are effective at this time, in the fourth industrial revolution, leadership training has to be relevant and targeted towards the needs of our next generation of women who will be well equipped to contribute to both the global economy and the empowerment of future generations.
www.energimeuniversity.org ~ July 2019
Leave No Girl Behind International approaches leadership training from a global platform to provide learners with equal opportunity, a success mindset, a global perspective and the foundation for learners to create meaningful lives for themselves and others. Girls are taught to embrace their voices and talents and are inspired to become pioneers, entrepreneurs and change-makers.
For every learner to reach their full potential, all stakeholders (parents, teachers, mentors, coaches and learners) must be enrolled in the vision and contribute towards creating a shi in mindset and breaking barriers of learners’ perceived limitations. The objective is for the learner, regardless of situation or environment, to say: “I am worthy enough to dream and capable enough to achieve my goal.”

Leave No Girl Behind International
As we help a girl develop her unique potential, we transform her world. When we replicate this model worldwide, again and again, we are able to eliminate the statistics that once seemed so overwhelming. The truth is that it all comes down to each of us as individuals – it takes a village to create change and all of us, as a global community, make up the village.

Behind the Scenes with William Sosinsky, Founder &Executive Director
To all our Energime family and Energime supporters, These past 9 months have been some of the most exciting and promising in the short history of Energime University. As many of you may (or may not) know, we have been looking to develop our “Sustainable Planet” education/training platform for almost 10 years. Because of the importance of this effort and the secrecy we have employed in its development, we have not spoken about it publicly until now. This past fall we started an all-out effort to create the program and are enjoying amazing success in that mission. Sustainable Planet is a virtual online strategic game combined with a virtual “Student Union” which is intended to teach students the complexities of sustainable economic development and planned societal expansion. The goal of this “vital” game is the coordinated and collaborative development of resilient communities in an age of climate change, expanding populations, and finite natural resources. Students work in teams to grow our communities and economy while eliminating the unintended negative impacts we have on the environment and the vibrancy of our vital natural resources. This platform is being created with a great purpose in mind. If we are to turn around the current course of environmental destruction, the overuse and mismanagement of our finite natural resources, we as a population must reach a critical mass of universal knowledge. If a large number of people begin to understand not only what our future challenges will be, but are skilled in the technologies, and strategies we need to employ to correct these miss-steps, then we will have a real fighting chance of turning things around. Sustainable Planet focuses on strategic student empowerment, and is essential to that more positive future.

Our technical development team, led by Peter LeGrand, Vijay Lakshman, and Tobias Hessner, has been working on the essential technical elements of the game for several months. Soon a team of volunteers from Microso will join Energime University to assist with the integration of an array of programs - that work in synergy to create this very intricate and robust platform. Upon completion, we will have more than 10 Million students using the program and visiting the Student Union at any one time. Alex Socolof and I have spent the last 9 months crisscrossing the country, setting up numerous partnerships to assist us in developing beta and also test its efficacy. To date, we have commitments from schools and counties located in a number of states including; New York, California, Washington, West Virginia, and New Jersey. We anticipate another 3 or 4 states to partner with Energime University, and take part in the initial test run. They will join us 3 months prior to the actual testing of the metrics and pre-launch preparation. Organizational support from groups such as the joint agencies in Washington (NASA, NOAA, DOA, etc..) , the United Nations, WWF, and WRI to name a few, as well as universities, professors, scientists, technology experts, economics experts, and educators nationwide/worldwide has been nothing short of overwhelming. There is a tidal wave of support (with written letters of commitment) coming our way and our team’s optimism has never been higher.
