Take care and think of others this festive season W ell, it is that time of the year once again, when we all look forward to winding up and taking that long restful holiday after labouring for the past 49 weeks to keep body and soul together and hunger and debts at bay. As we prepare to journey back to our respective rural and urban habitats to connect and relax in the company and comfort of loved our ones, let us take this opportunity to thank our Creator for sparing our lives and making sure we enjoy yet another festive season with our families this Christmas As we do so, let us also spare a moment and think about all those among us who will not be able to enjoy and share the joy of Christmas with their loved ones due to some unforeseen circumstances beyond their control. Let us also spare a moment and think about those lying in pain and confined to their hospital beds as well as those serving time in prison for crimes they did not commit.
As we dine, wine and indulge ourselves in the joyous moments during this season of festivities, peace and goodwill, let us once again, for a moment, allow our hearts and minds to think about those who will not be sitting at table with their loved ones and sharing jokes and laughter over a festive meal this Christmas. Let us also think about the elderly who find themselves alone and abandoned by those they raised with love. Let us also think about the children who have been left without parents, a caring guardian or relatives to take care and look after them. Let us not forget to also think about the widow whose husband has left her with no money and more than enough mouths to feed, clothe and educate. Let us also think about the widower who now finds himself having to play the dual role of

Please don’t drink so much over Christmas
C
hristmas is the season of merry-making, but some people tend to take the spirit of the festive season a little bit too far by drinking too much alcohol and end up get into trouble as a result. We all know that people lose their lives and belongings this time of the year because of drinking, but we can all avoid this by taking alcohol moderately and drinking only with the people we know and trust. Alcohol is often blamed for the many social problems that people create when they are drunk, but I think if only people could try and drink moderately, many of the troubles we experience during Christmas and New Year can be avoided. - Mxolisi Shabangu Ncala Section KATLEHONG Letter
Some “dirty” cop must have helped criminals escape from cells
T
he government and the police need to take stern action against those who break the law and make sure that criminals realise that crime does not pay. News of the escape from detention of a highly dangerous criminal at the Palm Ridge Courts, does not auger well with law abiding citizens. People are sick and tired of the laxity of the police when dealing with hardened criminals, while they treat law abiding citizens with violence and contempt. There is no doubt that some “dirty” policeman must have received a bribe of some sort to look the other way while this dangerous prisoner was allowed to walk out of the Palm Ridge cells to freedom. We all know that this is possible with the number of corrupt policemen and women we have in the police force today. - Takalani Moufhe Mailula Park KATLEHONG

Let us spare a though for the handicapped, who despite celebrating the joys of this season of love and peace, will still be alone as they watch yet another joyful moment pass them by. Let us also think about the homeless, who will have no bright glowing colourful Christmas tree lights dangling in the homes they once loved and cherished. Above all, let us make this a Christmas to enjoy and remember for the many among us who, as the minutes tick towards that momentous joy of celebrating the birth of their Saviour, will still find themselves, begging and scraping for the very basic necessities of the joys of life that so many of those of us who can afford will be taking for granted this festive season.

Parents should not try and make money out of lobola custom
T
his whole idea of uku-lobola must be abolished and done away with because it deprives newly-weds the opportunity to prepare themselves for a clean financial start in their marriage. By the time the couple establish themselves in their marriage, there is often very little or no money left for them to start their new life. This often leads to them starting their married life on credit as they have to buy everything they need on credit. We all know that this in most cases becomes the beginning of the downward spiral for many
marriages in society. Once the means to support your family in your home diminishes, life changes and happiness walks out of the door and the next thing you hear, is that the couple are divorcing. Please parents, do not be the cause of the marriage breakdown in your child’s life. Give them your support and make sure you advice and guide them as they settle down to start their life as family. - Paddington Mtshazo Pedi Section KATLEHONG

Mr Editor, you’re spot on about the scourge of charismatic churches
I
read your November editorial comment with a chuckle and smile on my face. Do these foreigners think we are just going to sit back and swallow everything they say and tell us about their “smart” religion? In fact, I think your article was spot-on and came short of asking the authorities to sending all these fake “pastas” (as you rightful called them in your comment) packing to go back to their countries of origin.
Let us, during this joyous season of plenty, share what we have with those who do not have. Let us bring joy to those who have been in so much pain and anguish, that celebrating this Christmas will be the only moment of happiness many of them have known this year. The publishers and Editor of Kathorus MAIL wishes you and your loved ones, a peaceful Christmas! ++++++++ And to the students who wrote their Matric examinations and passed, well done! Meanwhile to those who didn’t, failure does not signify the end of the world and the end of your dreams and ambition to become a better person in the world. My advice to you is, wipe the tears off your eyes and erase the pain of hopelessness in your heart and join your families in celebrating Christmas. When the new school term starts again in the New Year, stand up, dust yourself and start the journey all over again and make sure you do a lot better than you did this year. - Editor

Campaign has failed the victims
E
very year women and children are violated and some are even killed at the beginning of the antiviolence campaign. It has become common each year to read about the high numbers of women and children who become victims of domestic violence during this period. Last year alone, there were more women and children who were abused and some even killed by their spouses and parents during this period than any other period during the year.
It is for this reason that I now think that the government will have to make a number of drastic changes in the way it promotes this campaign. Since both women and children become more vulnerable to violence during this period, the authorities will have to implement strong anti-violence laws to curb the growth of this negative threat in our communities. - Philippine Madonsela Old Vosloorus VOSLOORUS

Police must take their job seriously
I
read the front page story in the August/September 2014 issue about the 21-year-old young woman who claims she has been a sex slave for a prostitution syndicate in the south of Johannesburg with shock. This is a problem that has engulfed every town, city and township around the country and the people who are behind it do so with impunity because of our defective justice system. In the case of human trafficking and prostitution in Turffontein and the surrounding areas, I put the blame squarely on the shoulders of the Booysens SAPS and the JMPD.
I have relatives who live in Rossetenville and they tell me the situation is made worse by the involvement of the police who accept bribes from these human traffickers and prostitution syndicates by turning a blind eye to their illegal activities. A lot more young girls could be rescued from these prostitution syndicates, if only those responsible for enforcing the law can take their work seriously. - Lawukazi Njikelana Mzamo Acres VOSLOORUS

Disaster centre opens in Kempton Member of Mayoral Committee for Community Safety in Ekurhuleni, Cllr Mthuthuzeli Siboza officially opened the Disaster Management Satellite Office in Kempton Park . The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is pulling no punches when it comes to the safety of its residents. Recently, the Metro saw the passing out of the Peace Corps volunteers in Tembisa and now it has officially opened the new Disaster Management Satellite Office. Formally a garage, the premises is now a place in which plans
to reduce disaster and the impacts thereof will be mapped. Since the new office is at the doorstep of the O.R. Tambo International Airport, employees at the satellite office will work closely with airport authorities to put into place and improve systems and procedures to monitor and react to disaster risk. According to Siboza the opening of the Disaster Management Satellite Office will enable the municipality to provide improved disaster management services to the communities in the area. “The building will house disaster management functionaries
and these will be working with communities to reduce disaster risks. The coordination of smaller disaster and humanitarian events may also be managed from this venue and so this venue becomes an important cog in the disaster management wheel,” said Siboza. He added that we must all remember that disaster management is everyone’s business so all stakeholders, community, municipal entities, departments and business must consider how disaster will affect them and look at increasing their resilience to disasters of every kind.

Local Stokvel the biggest in country Indaba Vibe, the Vosloorus based stokvel association, prides itself in being the biggest stokvel association in the country, this is after the group managed to gather over 25 stokvel societies throughout Ekurhuleni, Soweto, Pretoria and the Vaal and their more than 2 000 members into a single body. To mark the associations’ remarkable growth after just 12 months, Indaba Vibe hosted a year-end Christmas party for its
members at the popular White House venue in Vosloorus. “We have grown steadily over the months from a single stokvel to bringing more than 25 individual stokvel societies under a single and united umbrella,” explained the associations’ vice-chairperson, Mthuthuzeli Lumatha. According to Lumatha, Indaba Vibe has adopted a number of social responsibility programs in a bid to alleviate unemployment and grow their respective member affiliates into formidable local businesses that can provide
employment in the communities they serve. “One of our major aims in the new year would be to embark on an anti-crime and anti-drug campaign among the youth in our communities,” said Lamatha. According to Lamatha, the recruitment drive to grow the association is an on-going process and burial and stokvel societies that are eager to join their growing membership, should not hesitate to contact him on 082 255 2584.

Message from Ekurhuleni Mayor
Christmas message from the mayor The year 2014 is coming to an end. Like each year, this year also had its ups and downs, but we must remain grateful to God that we were able to experience it all and still come out in one peace. Through hard work and dedication we were able to ensure that our people continue to receive quality and sustainable services. Indeed inroads were made in the struggle to broaden services to areas that did not have, especially informal settlements. We shall continue working hard in this regard. My sincere gratitude goes to all the people of Ekurhuleni who understood when we experienced service delivery challenges especially in the areas of water and energy. As our staff continued to work even harder to service our communities, our residents kept us on our toes when it seemed like we were losing focus. It is because of such participatory democracy that our governance machinery can improve even further. Remember, this is the government of the people and as a City we shall continue relying heavily on our people to show us the way every time. Of all the ups and downs experienced through the year, allow me to appeal to communities to abstain from vandalizing property and disrupting schooling during service delivery protests. Such incidents which happened in some areas are taking us back instead of taking us forward. They deprive our children, who are the future of the region and the country, a shot at education which is the key for the future. For me one of the highlights for 2014 is the 20th anniversary of our democracy. It was in April 1994 when we voted for the first democratic government, and 20 years later our democracy remains intact. We are still a country that belongs to all who live in it regardless of race and gender. In the middle of this year we once again hosted yet another democratic and incident free election to demonstrate to the world that we are a country that is maturing with time. Indeed we are now closing 2014. I do hope that there is something positive that we all learnt during the year. Such lessons will come in handy in the New Year as we look at ways to improve the manner in which we have been doing things for our people. In welcoming 2015 we must put the atrocities of the past year behind us and look forward to a brand new year with its own positives and challenges. It is my sincere wish that all those who will be going away to various destinations to relax and/ or visit family during the festive break, drive and arrive safely. For us who are remaining behind, let us be on our best behaviour and make sure that we enjoy the festive season in a crime-free, non-violent and peaceful environment. As I have said it before – as a community we create peace and order, and the police must just sustain it. Our city’s theme for this period of office is: Strengthening social maturity by advancing social cohesion in pursuit of a prosperous city. We opted for this theme because it is our contention that Ekurhuleni is indeed a socially mature City. Our City is today a place of peace because its residents have lived through and endured years of plunder,

neglect and violence. As a result of these experiences, our residents are now an embodiment of reconciliation and peaceful coexistence. We have all had a long year and as such we must relax and fully recharge our batteries so that when we return in the New Year we can continue building an Ekurhuleni that is the most favoured place to stay, work, invest and play. KATHORUS MAIL Entertainment & Arts
Theatre bonanza waits for Ekurhuleni early in 2015 My Body My Space is a new festival of public arts events co-ordinated by The Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative (FATC). It is a festival designed to contribute to key issues such as social cohesion and nation building. It celebrates 20 years of democracy as it explores issues relating to gender violence and the impact of HIV/Aids; and aims to re-stitch communities and spaces that have previously been separated, to shine a light on the role of women, children and other vulnerable members of society and find a shared voice and experience around critical, personal and social issues. The festival will play out as a series of ‘guerrilla style’ art interventions, installations and live public performances, erupting on the streets and pavements of the City of Ekurhuleni, in hubs of city life, under-served communities and at the intersection of its diverse citizenry. The installation of My Body My Space will take place during 2015 as follows: • “Central Nervous System”: FATC will build a programme of public arts events and performances at Wattville’s OR Tambo Memorial Cultural precinct on February 7, from 11:00 to 18:00. The programme comprises dance, music, cultural and performance art, as well as a craft market, creating a rich experience that activates every corner of the cultural precinct. The audience will travel with the programme on foot. They will be guided through an array of happenings, performances and installations placed at strategic points in the route. • In “Arteries”, FATC and collaborating artists will build guerrilla style events and performed interventions along Ekurhuleni’s major arteries and transport routes, on February 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, at sites including taxi ranks, markets, parks and other public spaces in Katlehong, Thokoza, Wattville, Benoni, Daveyton and Springs, through provocative public art happenings, the festival will contribute to the activation of these arteries. “As we celebrate 20 years of democracy and political freedom the festival is a call to artists, public and private sector and the citizens of Ekurhuleni to actively engage in a process of personal and social transformation and healing in addressing critical issues that are our current stumbling blocks to true emancipation,” says PJ Sabbagha, the mastermind behind the event. MMC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (Ekurhuleni) Zeni Tshongweni says, “The City wholeheartedly supports the My Body My Space initiative. It will turn the city around and open up its citizens to the magic of dance.” Theatre patrons who wish to see the productions should call; 011 482 3467/3489, 083 263 6991 or 083 706 2952.

EFFECTIVE R 2014 1 DECEMBE
Bringing justice services closer to you
RATIONALISATION OF MAGISTERIAL DISTRICTS As from 1 December 2014, the magisterial districts in Gauteng and North West will be changed to ensure that they align with municipal boundaries. This process will also ensure that more people have access to justice services at courts that are located closer to where they live. Make sure that you go to the right court that serves your community or your area of work. What does the rationalisation project aim to do? The rationalisation project aims to align the jurisdiction of magisterial districts with municipal boundaries. Through the rationalisation of courts project, magisterial boundaries drawn before 1994 are redrawn in accordance with the new democratic dispensation. How will this process affect you? It will enable communities to access justice services closer to where they live and reduce travelling costs.
Before rationalisation of courts: 18 km
After rationalisation of courts: 5 km
For example, in terms of the old magisterial boundaries, the Hammanskraal community had to travel to the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court to access justice services which is a distance of 18 kilometres away. With the rationalisation process, the Hammanskraal community will now be served by the Themba Magistrate’s Court which is about 5 kilometres away.
Why was it necessary to undertake the rationalisation project?
• Access to justice is a basic human right,
provided for in the Constitution. The main aim of the process is to widen access to justice by having a court in every municipality and a seat of the High Court in every province.
• At a district level, the areas of jurisdiction of the Magistrates’ Courts will be the same as that of Municipalities to the extent that this is practical and possible.
• New courts will be built in areas of need and existing courts will be allocated adequate jurisdiction to respond to the needs of the communities they serve.
Who will be affected by this process? Communities in Gauteng and North West will be affected as from 1 December.
In the Germiston area in the Ekurhuleni Central Magisterial District there are two courts, Germiston Magistrate’s Court and Edenvale Branch Court, that serve the areas below: Activia Park Airport Park Albemarle Bedford Gardens Bedford Park Bedfordview Buhle Park Buurendal Castleview Clarens Park Cruywagen Park Dania Park Dawnview De Klerkshof Delville Denlee Dinwiddie Dowerglen Dowerglen Ext 3 Driefontein (87 IR) Dukathole Dunvegan Eastleigh Eden Glen Edenvale Elandsfontein 90-IR Elandsfontein Rail Elandshaven Elma Park Elsburg

Carnival Chief Choreographer Ignition TLK leading his troupes on a captivating routine down the Nkosi Street in Kwa-Thema. Entertainment
Ekurhuleni Carnival dazzles and entertain with rhythm and colour Rhythm and colour livened up the streets of Tsakane and Kwa-Thema earlier this month when carnival troupes from across the City of Ekurhuleni participated in the 10th annual Ekurhuleni Carnival. Not even the dry scorching weather could deter the troupe’s high spirits as they danced and sang joyously throughout the seven kilometres distance. The Ekurhuleni Carnival kicked off
at Langaville Secondary School in Tsakane and ended on a high note at Bulithando Park in KwaThema. Onlookers took pictures, clapped hands and danced along to the routines rendered by the over thousand strong carnival procession. The main objective of the Ekurhuleni Carnival is to support entrepreneurs in the art industry. Performing artist Ignition TLK
from Kwa-Thema - who was this year’s carnival chief choreographer - said: “The carnival is a brilliant platform to get exposure as an artist, as well as an opportunity to make money as we make a living through the arts”. “The reason why the City of Ekurhuleni continues to support the carnival is solely because we view it as an investment to what could be someone’s career tomorrow,” he said.
