La Tosca Hostel They have exceeded the standards for hostel dorms! The thick mattresses on the beds are comfortable and everyone has a huge locker and private space. Bariloche Hostel The hosts are great. They help with all aspects of getting around this great part of Argentina. While my Spanish is limited, they would help in English and I never felt too bad about that! You will meet a lot of older backpackers here and for me that was a plus. That is not to say younger people are not welcome, it is just not a BIG party hostel. Facilities are typical for a hostel, clean and tidy. I highly recommend this hostel. La Posta Hostel This place is a home away from home. Sure, it’s a little walk from town, but it’s in a quiet residential area and it’s quiet itself. The minute you walk in, you feel at home. The staff remembers you by name and chats you up if you feel like it. It’s a great house-style hostel with comfy beds and big lockers. The hostelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rooftop and BBQ area feature a stunning view of the city, the harbour and the iconic Opera House. The hostel is only a few years old and is quite modern inside. There is a large kitchen for guests with lots of storage space for food. Each bed has its own light and power plug and each bed has its own large-sized locker with a shelf for smaller items. Southern Surf Beach Apartments The reason I love Southern Surf is because of the people! I first stayed there during a solo trip to Barbados in 2010. I found them thanks to amazing reviews on Tripadvisor. The staff is great. They greeted me personally when I arrived from the airport (“ahhh, Nadine you’ve arrived!"). They went out of their way to make sure I was okay everything from getting the night security guard to keep an eye out for me whenever I was out late, to loaning me a mobile phone to use whilst on the island. All I had to do was keep it topped up. By the time I left, I felt as though they were friends and not just hotel staff. There were hugs involved when it was time for me to say goodbye. I’ve received Christmas cards from there every year since. I recommend them absolutely every opportunity I get and I even went back and stayed there again in 2012! Xenia Centre The grounds are wonderful. Lots of nature! I especially liked walking the labyrinth! The inside spaces are natural and beautiful. Beijing Downtown Backpackers This hostel is in a great location, which makes getting around and exploring extremely easy ... something I value especially when traveling alone. They also arrange a wide variety of tours and activities which can make sightseeing easier. I took their Jinshanling Great Wall trip. But the primary reason I would recommend this to solo travelers is for the helpful staff. In a country in which I know only a basic spoken language and nothing of the written language, the value of friendly, helpful local staff can hardly be overstated. I have stayed here several times. On one occasion I got very sick during my stay but the staff was genuinely concerned and looked after me. They helped me make phone calls to contacts I had arranged to meet. They never made me feel as if I was intruding or dumb for any of my inquiries or requests for help. Also, they provide airport pick-up, which is a relief when arriving in a foreign country. So you don’t have to hit the ground running trying to figure out what a reasonable taxi rate should be, etc. The hostel was a nice mix of young and older people ... I met some nice folks, all younger than me, but it was mellow and casual, not a “party” atmosphere. Website:

Wombats Hostel Munich The Wombats Hostel is within walking distance of the Munich Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) and also within walking distance of the Hofbrauhaus (the beer hall). There are a lot of reasons to love this hostel. Here are a few: free linen (they ask you not to use your own sleeping bag to prevent bed bugs), your access key also opens your locker (no need for locks), the on-site bar (you’ll get a free drink voucher on check in), en suite bathrooms and the cheap all-you-can eat basic breakfast. In addition, the rooms, bathrooms and corridors are clean. The rooms themselves are comfortable (big enough considering I opted for the 6 sleeper). And the staff are friendly and willing to help. Power outlets are located conveniently on a little ledge next to each bed. And the rooms are all non-smoking. One small negative note - lockers are a bit on the small side. Situated in a palm tree grove right beside a gorgeous stretch of beach, it offers stays in a raised house on stilts, a Portuguese-style cottage, and even a tepee. Also, yoga classes are held here, and from time to time you’ll find other things to enjoy, like ‘gong baths’. Aaron House Tourist Hostel I loved this hostel because it feels like you are living in someone’s home. Tracy, the woman who owns and runs the hostel, is super friendly and makes sure all the people staying in the hostel are comfortable and treated respectfully. She loves to talk about her country and loves to meet people, and is also very generous. She was great to stay with! My room was co-ed, with comfy bunk beds, a locking door and a bathroom. I felt that leaving my things in my room was safer than any other hostel I have stayed at. There was also a nice common room, and fast WiFi access in all the rooms. Number 31 It’s hard to capture how truly wonderful this place is. From the moment I walked in the door, I was treated like an old friend. A tea tray in front of the peat-burning fireplace, a little chat with Noel about my holiday...lovely. My room was absolutely stunning. I tried to pick my jaw up off the floor as I was ushered into my separate sitting room and then into the bedroom. The sitting room had a full-size couch with designer chair and ottoman, and a stained-glass window. The breakfast was so different from other breakfasts I’ve had around Europe. City Garden Lodge It’s in one of the “poshest” areas of Auckland but it’s right on The Link bus route which will take you all around the city. It’s really, really clean and the kitchen is well equipped. When I was there, there was even a range of herbs and spices which were free to use. It’s small and friendly. Ian & Brenda live on the property too so they’re always there if you need any help or advice. It’s got a proper home feel to it. Brenda is into her yoga and there’s a little den in the garden where anyone can just go and chill or meditate or practice Yoga. The rooms book up pretty quickly. You need to call in advance. But they do have a lovely garden where you can pitch a tent. At least they did back when I was there. That might have changed. It’s worth checking. Also, they’re part of the BBH network so if you have a card you get a cheaper stay. They have a maximum 2-week-stay policy unless you end up working for accommodation for them. But to be honest, a few of my mates there squeezed an extra week or two out of them before leaving. Oh, and there’s no TV which meant that everyone had conversations, played board games, cooked together and read. I loved it there and one of the friends I made there still regularly goes back when he visits NZ. It’s not a party hostel. Ian asks that that all guests are considerate after a certain time. Retro Youth Hostel Retro hostel is very conveniently located, has great staff, is clean and offers many different types of rooms. They make omelets in the morning, host amazing tours with awesome guides. I went to an ice cave & hiked to a salt mine with the best guide I’ve ever had. They have WiFi too. And there’s a great sense of community here. The only thing I did not like was that there’s no big community lounge area. They do have an area for cooking, meeting, reading and listening to music downstairs though. The Backpack - Capetown, South Africa The staff are genuinely friendly and helpful. Great atmosphere and location. Travelers of all ages are welcome. There are a variety of rooms from single rooms to family rooms. There are 2 main sitting areas. One area is outdoors but within the complex with a view of Table Mountain. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s next to the bar area and great if you want to socialize. The other is inside and more quiet. They host activities at the hostel as well as out on the town and truly welcome everyone! The hostel is targeted at younger people, but as a 40+ solo traveler to Cape Town I have stayed here twice and have felt comfortable. There is genuine fun to be had here, but someone looking for some quieter times could also find it here as there are many sitting areas. Be Hostels Great central location, very friendly, English speaking staff, free WiFi and computers in the common area and very clean. As a solo traveling woman who values my privacy and security, I have stayed in the single rooms which have tv’s, private balconies and a/c. The shared bathrooms are the cleanest and most modern of any hostel's I have visited in Europe. There are also apartments with private bathrooms and dorm rooms, too. I have been to Barcelona twice and stayed at two locations. When I return to Spain, I will stay here again and will always recommend it. U Hostel It’s the cleanest hostel I’ve ever been in, for starters. It has everything you need and adds all the little things, like power outlets beside each bed, which I absolutely love. Mana Mana Hostel Really friendly, owned by a young Spanish/Polish couple who work very hard. Has a beautiful rooftop terrace where I met lots of lovely people, including several other solo travelers. Close to one of the main shopping streets and only 5 minutes from the beach. It’s perfect for some R&R, but you also might want to take a boat trip, SCUBA dive, take in a castle ruin, or head out to one of the 3 beaches all of which are pretty easy to get to. I went initially planning on stopping for 3 nights, 4 max but instead stayed for 5. Had a fantastic time there! It’s aimed at young people, and there are some nice bars nearby. But it’s not a big party place. I ended up starting the night on the rooftop terrace with friends, going to a bar or two and then finishing the night with a quiet drink on the moonlit beach. Lovely! Also there’s a decent kitchen for cooking in. It also has a washing machine and a computer along with WiFi. It’s very clean, and has good-sized lockers to put all your stuff in. The hostel looks a bit eerie from the outside as it is an old converted prison, but it is incredibly clean inside and the staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. Though the website has no official booking mechanism, I sent a short e-mail asking for a bed and it was waiting for me upon arrival, no problems! Non-prison rooms are available as well as miniature cabinstyle lodging in the court yard. I first arrived on a weekend in the summer and it was packed with young Swedish people (party atmosphere) but my stay lasted into the week and I ended with a six-person room all to myself (very calm). I found it on Airbnb, made an enquiry, and Warut warmly responded almost immediately. Patong Beach and the Jungceylon shopping mall are about a 20-minute walk away, and tuk tuk drivers are easy to hail from the main road. I was traveling solo, and the employees made an extra effort to ensure my safety. All of the employees are friendly, welcoming, and immediately available to advise or even book a local tour. They booked a discounted tour to Phi Phi Island for me, which was a fabulous and comprehensive deal. The daily included a delicious breakfast, the WiFi was reliable, and the hot water was plentiful. My one word of caution is regarding the lack of an elevator if you have knee or mobility issues. The Lynton Hotel London was the first place I ever took a solo trip to, and traveling outside my own country (even to another English-speaking country) made me pretty nervous. Despite the name The Lynton Hotel is more like a B&B, and it was perfect for my first solo trip. The owners, Mark and Simon, were both very nice and helpful in giving me suggestions on what to do and where to go. My room had two single beds, a desk, tv, coffee maker, and a sink with a vanity. HI-DC This hostel is fantastic. Ideally located for walking to all of DC’s top sights. They run guided tours, notable sight visits and dinner evenings - all for free. Well, you should tip the guides. You get a free breakfast - bagels, toast, cereal, fruit - enough to give you a good start to the day. There is a good, self-catering kitchen with lots of utensils and plenty of fridge/cupboard space. There are even a couple of vending machines in the dining room. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Local maps of all the sights and important things like nearest shops and good eateries are on the front desk. Wifi is free and there are cheap computer terminals for those who are technology-less. There is a lift to all floors although it’s very slow! The rooms are clean, comfortable and have good-size lockers and good amount of power outlets. The bathrooms are large, communal, always clean and with constant hot water. This was the first hostel I’d ever stayed in on my own. It is the hostel where I met good friends that I’m still in contact with today.
