Suspected Maoist rebels set off two bombs in the eastern Indian state of Chhattisgarh killing 13 people, most of them paramilitary soldiers and officials charged with holding elections in the region. The attacks, half an hour apart, were the most serious since voting to elect a new federal government began last week in a six-week process to allow security forces to move across the country. The first explosion took place in a bus in Bijapur carrying election officials who were on their way back after completing the vote. Seven people were killed.

A second bomb hit an ambulance in the thickly forested Bastar region killing five members of the Central Reserve Police Force and their driver, according to R. K. Vij, head of antiMaoist operations. It was not clear why the soldiers were travelling in the ambulance, but in the past Government officials have used such vehicles as a means of disguise or distraction to avoid attacks by Maoists. The rebels have operated for decades across a wide swath of central and eastern India, and have grown in strength recently in areas where poor,

tribal villagers came into conflict with mining companies seeking resources for industrialisation. The Maoists are seeking to overthrow the Indian state by violence. They accuse the government of first taking over land from poor peasants and then plundering the land’s mineral wealth. India’s 2014 elections are the world’s biggest exercise in democracy, and the spend by politicians is expected to reach $5 billion. This makes them the second most expensive elections after the $7 billion U.S. presidential elections. India is a multi-party parliamentarian federal democracy and the forthcoming elections are for the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament. The country is divided into 543 constituencies, each represented by a member of parliament, and the party or coalition with a simple majority (272 seats) forms the government. Currently, two main coalitions are the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by the Indian National Congress (INC) – also the ruling party – and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). There are 11 other regional parties that have come together to form a third front.

local News New APSA kennels a step closer The new APSA kennels are well on their way on the site near Albox. Di, chair of APSA, was delighted to report the steady progress at the recent APSA AGM at Jacks in Albox. The registered charity has been in existence for over 10 years and continues to find homes for dogs whilst running a neutering and education programme - funded solely through the APSA shop and events organised by volunteers and supporters. Di reported that she homed 101 dogs last year but the charity took in many more, it now has more dogs than ever and the kennels are full to the brim. To save on costs and to assist homings, the charity is building its own kennels nearer to Albox. The red tape and regulations make the process frustrating at times and work, done by volunteers, is dependant on donations of building materials and money. At the AGM, plans for open days at the kennels were discussed and Di said the charity will continue to kennel dogs privately to help with finances. Su is planning one of her excellent fashion shows, always a sell-out, in June so look

out for details. We are all also looking forward to the official opening of the kennels. Volunteers are desperately needed now though to help with the new kennels, also any fencing, bricks, odd tiles - anything to help with the building. Please ring Di 663 762 642 or call in the APSA shop if you would like to donate money to the building fund. The shop is in Avenida Lepanto, opposite Jacks in Albox, open 10am to 2pm Monday to Saturday. Photos are of the site and Di, and a puppy waiting for the new kennels to be built! The latest news, and dogs for homing, are at http://www.apsa.org.es/

Man charged over hammer attack at London’s Cumberland Hotel

A man has been charged with the attempted murder of three women at a hotel near London’s Marble Arch. The 1,000 room luxury four star hotel is just yards from London shoppers’ paradise, Oxford Street.

The women - wealthy sisters from the United Arab Emirates – were attacked with a hammer and hit around the face and neck as they slept. The family had arrived in London separately between the 3rd and 5th of this month, with their three children aged between seven and 12 years old. The women and children shared the two rooms, which had an adjoining door. According to Detective Superintendent Carl Mehta the room, on the seventh floor of the hotel, was deliberately left unlocked by the occupants as they had other family members staying at the hotel. Police investigating the attack arrested three men aged 56, 34 and 32 in Islington, north London, on suspicion of attempted murder, and a 31-year-old woman on suspicion of handling stolen goods. According to Scotland Yard, Philip Spence, 32, of no fixed abode, was charged with three counts of attempted murder and one of aggravated burglary. He will appear in custody at Westminster magistrates court with Thomas Efremi, 56, of Upper Handa Walk, Islington, north London, who is charged with handling stolen goods and fraud by false representation, and James Moss, 33, of Hanley Road, Finsbury Park, north London, who is charged with handling stolen goods. Carly Baker, 31, of Hanley Road, Finsbury Park, has been charged with handling stolen goods, and has been bailed to appear at Westminster magistrates court. A 34-year-old man has been bailed to return pending further inquiries on a date in May.

9 month old baby charged with murder

A Pakistani judge threw out charges of attempted murder made against a nine-month-old baby in a case that cast a spotlight on Pakistan’s dysfunctional justice system. Baby Musa Khan appeared in court in the city of Lahore, sitting on his grandfather’s lap and drinking from a bottle of milk. He and his adult relatives were charged this month with attempting to murder a policeman after his family clashed with police and gas company workers trying to collect overdue bills. The police registered a case against the whole family, though later the charge was revoked, and an altered charge against the baby’s grandfather, Muhammad Yasin, and his three sons was registered. The family’s defense lawyer, Irfan Sadiq, said ‘The police told the court that the nomination of Musa in the case of attacking police and gas company officials was a human error and Musa is not charged.’ Pictures taken at an earlier court hearing of Musa crying as he was being fingerprinted provoked widespread ridicule, and provincial officials called for an inquiry into this ridiculous charge.

A German furniture store chain has apologised for selling mugs with Adolf Hitler’s face on them.

The ceramic cups feature a faint image of a Naziera 20 pfennig postage stamp with Hitler’s profile on it, postmarked with a swastika stamp. The mug is decorated with roses, and features handwritten poems English - next to the photograph of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. The furniture chain, which operates in Bielefeld, Germany, which is still a British Forces base, apologised for the “terrible” mistake, which it blamed on “a stupid chain of unfortunate circumstances”. The company’s owner, Christian Zurbrueggen, said: ‘The cups’ Chinese designer had mistakenly chosen the image of the former dictator, which the chain then ordered in error.’ No one noticed

the problem during unpacking.’ He apologised profusely and called the incident ‘truly terrible.’ He said the mugs were loaded so quickly on to company shelves that no store workers noticed the ‘embarrassing error.’ The Chinese factory responsible has also apologised and promised a full investigation. The chain sold 175 of the mugs before anyone drew attention to the black and white profile of the world’s most infamous Nazi. Those customers could make a profit on their purchase, though. The company promised to compensate them with a 20-euro (£16.5) gift voucher - a significant mark-up on the original 1.99 euro price. The company may

not be the only one keen to get hold of the notorious mugs. The Neue Westfaelische Zeitung also reports that a contemporary history museum in Bonn, the

House of History, has also expressed “great interest” in getting hold of some. The chain has destroyed the unsold cups. The sale of anything

featuring the former Fuehrer is strictly forbidden in modern-day Germany and can be punishable with severe fines.

Spring is in the air and that means summer is only just around the corner. Swim suit season is here, so time to work off our winter hibernation fat. The question is; are you going to make a start and get ready to show off your new swimwear and your new Beach Body or Go back into hibernation behind a Brolly? Look… I know we’re not all into taking our tops off to go frolicking on the beach to show off our tanned bodies… but warmer weather means less clothing. And that means, shorts, tank tops, sleeveless dresses… basically more skin exposure. Even if you’re able to cover your midsection, you’re going to have a difficult time covering up your arms and legs. Here’s the good news though… when you start getting back into shape your arms and legs are usually the first areas to get toned. Your midsection is more difficult… but seeing the results come so quickly in your arms and legs is great motivation to stick with it and keep working hard so you can eventually work off your stubborn stomach fat. And the month of April is the best time to start… since any real significant progress takes 2 - 3 months to see. So if you begin now… you’ll be just in time for summer! The biggest challenge is knowing where to begin. And for most people starting the right way can be the difference between getting the results you want so you can confidently spend your summer wearing (or not wearing) anything you want OR having to be self conscious and constantly having to worry about what you look like… all throughout the summer season.

Well… personally I want you to have a great summer, so I’m giving you the 4 essential steps you need to effectively start burning off that extra layer of winter fat today, so you can be swimsuit ready by summer time. 1. Start by changing your diet. Diet is the easiest place to start since you don’t need to do anything physical. That being said, I know most people would rather start with the physical aspect of their fitness/ fat loss program… because changing diet is difficult. BUT this is where 90% of the people go wrong. They start by exercising and being more active before changing their diet… which is like starting your car and shifting into drive while the car is on rollers. Not matter how fast the speedometer says you’re going, the car doesn’t move… a lot of wasted energy for nothing. Here’s the thing … just by tweaking your diet slightly on daily/weekly basis you can make huge gains. It doesn’t need to be all or nothing. The idea is to find what works for you… so you can stick to it without having to feel deprived or hungry. If you can’t stick to it, it’s no use… it simply won’t last. The principle of a solid diet begins by eating real food only and eliminating liquid calories. That means no processed foods or sugar drinks… even if it’s “healthy”. If you’re used to drinking juice… switch it eating fruits. If you’re used to drinking orange juice in the morning… eat oranges instead. Just by simply removing processed foods and liquid calories, you’ll be amazed at how much less

If your daily caloric intake is 2000 calories the calories from fat would be 2000 - 468 + 400 = 1132 calories. 1 gram of fat equals 9 calories, so 1132 calories equals 126 g of fat Summary: 468 gram of protein, 400 grams of carbohydrate and 126 g of fat

Personally I like full body exercises in a circuit training format because I’ve seen the best results using this combination of methods. But you don’t need to do what I do. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you’re using challenging weights that work your muscles and perform each workout with enough intensity to stimulate the necessary fat burning hormones. Keep in mind that the results of the workouts will be a direct effect of the intensity you put into the workouts. More doesn’t mean it’s better or more intense. If you’re doing the workouts right you can get all the benefits in 20 - 30 minutes… max!

The best modern cosmetics come in syringes, not jars! Improving your skin or fixing the line may not necessarily fix your life. But wouldn’t it be nice to get back what you thought you might have lost forever? If you can look good and feel great about it, then why not do it? A desire to improve your appearance is not about vanity. It’s about confidence and your self-esteem. And as Oscar Wilde said “It is only shallow people who don’t judge by first impressions”. SOLTIMES april 2014

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today I’m breaking a rule. I’m writing the same article for both papers. Generally, I prefer to do two (2) different topics as both papers are completely different with their own individual styles. What topic could make me take this drastic action? The impending demise of support and maintenance by Microsoft for Windows XP. What are the implications? How is the security of your computer likely to be affected? Do you have to, as insisted upon by Microsoft, either upgrade (pay through the nose for something that you never actually own) to their flagship (should that read flag shit?) Window 8.1, stick with Upgrading to Windows 7 or stay as you are? What are the benefits / dangers of these options? Can I offer an alternate perspective to that of the computer re-sellers (who want you to buy a new computer from them) and the massive money machine that is Microsoft on this issue. Just about everyone, currently, uses some form of threat to coerce you into a course of action that suits them. You have seen the advert for coughing where ‘IT IS CANCER’ but probably nothing!!? They all play on your insecurities. Knowledge is the only tool we have against these individuals. I’m writing this article on an XP computer! This machine has served me faithfully, without too many problems, for 7 years and is still going strong! You have been told that because XP isn’t to have any further support that it will become vulnerable to attack, viruses, malware and a host of other nasties out there, and the ONLY solution is to spend

more money on buying a product that they provide – at extortionate cost! Here are a few questions that might help you make the right decision for you. What do you have on it that any cracker (not hacker) will want to spend days getting passed your defences for? Crackers are generally ‘thrill seekers’ wanting to beat the latest and greatest. Our behemoth steam engines are of little interest to them! Will your Antivirus and Malware programs stop working after the final date. Will all your third party programs (firefox, thunderbird, gimp, etc) also stop working? The short answer is NO! They will continue to be supported by the authors for sometime to come (I have found programs for my windows 98 machine STILL out there on the internet!). My choice is NOT to upgrade! I am happy where I am at the moment. This doesn’t mean that Windows 7 isn’t any good, IT IS! When I choose to upgrade, in the far flung mists of time, it will be to Windows 7 (unless Microsoft get off their corporate arses and make a product worth upgrading to!). At this moment, I wouldn’t upgrade to Windows 8.1 if my life depended on it as it is still designed for ‘touch screen’ technology and leaves us poor keyboard and mouse folk out on a limb! I hope that this helps to allay the worries that you might have had about the imminent demise of XP support. As always I will be a Jack’s Bar, Albox from 12 lunchtime until about 4pm for my regular Friday ‘computer clinic’. Advice and Diagnosis are always free. So either see you there, or in your own home (reading the articles or fixing your problems). Until then, have a lovely week now that summer appears to have arrived.

braben’s blog... Dreadline Day Blues!

There I was, trying to get something sent to the Sol Times before the deadline. Really, you don’t want to miss deadline day or you’re forced to listen to a whole day of Boney M! What a punishment! But, I had ten minutes to spare so thought I would rattle something off. Yes I know, you’re surprised it takes so long, but that does include makingand drinking-a cup of tea. I’d just managed to complete a very tricky technical process, requiring advanced I.T. skills-switching the computer on-when next door’s kids kicked their ball over the wall...again. They must be lousy footballers because hardly an hour goes by without a ball landing in our garden. So, being a good neighbour, I went out to throw it back over the wall. Not their wall of course, I’m not that good, but over the wall of our other neighbour. The first thing that hit me was, it was hot! Only late March and someone had already turned the heat up to Gas Mark 7! The second thing to hit was the realisation that the ball was moving. I looked closer, there were hordes of ants the size of your thumb, determinedly taking the ball, which was a full sized football, towards their nest. A thought struck me...aren’t insects daft! While I was watching, trying to decide whether I should risk an ant attack and get the ball back, the doorbell rang. When I say the doorbell rang, I should clarify this; one of the kids next door was leaning on it so it was ringing away like a Tsunami warning. At the same time his brother was assaulting the door with his cricket bat. Lovely kids! Fortunately, that made my decision for me. I opened the door and invited them in to pick up their ball. They looked a bit confused, this isn’t what usually happens! In they came and the one with the bat picked up their football, smirking to his brother all the time. I’ve got to tell you, that smirk suddenly changed to a look of terror as a few of those ants fastened themselves to his fingers and wouldn’t let go. He dropped the ball and scooted out, quickly followed by his brother. I did feel sorry for them and even considered throwing the ball back. And I still hadn’t finished this week’s offering. Oh no-Boney M approaching fast!

The Secret Diary

Until the age of seven my life was a bit of a blur; I don’t mean I can’t’ remember much, it really was blurry as I was diagnosed with myopia, severe short sightedness of minus 6. Looking through photo albums it’s weird to see myself without glasses until a couple of years into school. Luckily I was taught to read at home before I first started school and I remember holding books up close to my face, a habit I still have now. Those old family albums also show another change as also aged 7 a mole grew on the tip of my nose. Later a specialist described it as a dogs paw mole. It never bothered me as it was fairly invisible from where I viewed it and kids at school affectionately called me Moley. I had a friend called Alex Mole in middle school so he was Moley too. The NHS only offered the most horrible looking specs to children. After growing out of the Joe 90 plastic ones infants still get today, I opted for the round tortoise shell style, later made famous by Harry Potter. I am so glad I’d long left school when those books started doing the rounds in 1997. I started Secondary school in 1978; the same year as Tucker Jenkins, Alan and Benny started at Grange Hill, I had a crush on Trisha Yates, played by Michelle Herbert. She’s now a receptionist for a double glazing company in Scotland. The characters had similar problems and adventures as most real life 12 year olds did when joining a large school full of hormone fuelled teenagers. Bullying was par for the course; suddenly being called Moley had an

aggression to it when the older boys took the mickey out of my nose and jam jar lens glasses.

Then in 1982 Adrian Mole aged 13 & 3/4s appeared in print looking remarkably similar to me; this gave the witty bullies my new name Adrian Moley. Luckily I left school soon after and at college the ribbing stopped. Tucker et al also left Grange Hill, Todd Carty starred in Tuckers Luck which ran for three series until 1985. My school years coincided with the beginning of Thatcherism where the mantra was ‘greed is good.’ Luckily Adrian Mole and Tucker Jenkins through their creators Sue Townsend (May she rest in peace) and Phil Redmond showed kids the stark reality for those not fortunate enough to have ‘Loadsamoney’. The 80s saw me in my teens to early 20s. Auf Weidersehen-Pet and Boys from the Black Stuff depicted the flipside of Thatcher’s so called economic miracle. Harry Enfield’s character Loadsamoney and the loathsome couple Stan and Pam with their catchphrase ‘we are considerably richer than yow!’ The miners’ strike and privatisations that promised riches to the masses were the backdrop to my adolescence. Then 25 years ago this week tragedy struck at Hillsborough; On April 15th 1989, 96 Liverpool fans were crushed to death at a football ground that although previously deemed as unsafe was allowed

to host the FA Cup Final against Nott’s Forest. Immediately the right wing media headed by The Scum prompted by a corrupt police hierarchy and Thatcher’s administration; disgustingly lied and blamed the fans for their own deaths. Liverpool FC staff (Steven Gerrard lost his cousin Jon Paul aged just 10) and thousands of others still mourn the loss of relatives, colleagues and friends that day. Finally a new inquest started 2 weeks ago; it makes painful reading as to just how families are still affected to this day. Hopefully now finally there will be Justice for the 96!

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com VERY IMPORTANT: A NEW DIRECTIVE FROM THE EUROPEAN UNION MAKES IT NECCESARY FOR ENGLISH PEOPLE RESIDENT IN SPAIN TO REVISE THEIR SPANISH WILLS. Q. A solicitor spoke the other day on television about the new directive 650/2012 explaining that is was essential that people retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union revise their wills. What is all this about? A. This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation of the EU establishes that: When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another, the law applicable to his inheritance will be the one that he/she has established expressly in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can establish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/her inheritance and this will avoid any possible risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of children from different marriages etc. If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently on his will the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because under Spanish

law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be left to children. In other words if you are resident of Spain, have children and do not establish on your will that you wish English Law (your national law ) to rule your inheritance your Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full inheritance as it would contradict the Spanish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new regulation. Consequences: 1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule your inheritance. If you have not, then you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European directive and add this statement to your will. 2.If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouses children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance. Conclusion: Due to the substantial changes that it introduces the directive allows up to August of 2015 for it to be in force and therefore giving all those affected (anyone national of a European Union country resident in another) time to have their wills changed accordingly. The sooner you make sure that your will is in order the better. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Reformed pension rules, dismal interest rates, buoyant Sterling and depressed European housing markets – all favourable conditions for overseas investment that have led to the publication of the Overseas Property Investor Guide, a jargon-free guide aimed at helping first-time investors in foreign real estate markets. The new Overseas Property Investor Guide, published by the Overseas Guides Company, is launching at this week’s Property Investor and Homebuyer Show. The Overseas Investor Guide will complement its stand at the London event with free copies of its new Guide, where visitors will also be able to check out the latest investment opportunities and subscribe to its fortnightly investment focused e-newsletter. “Thanks to the new rules, pension pots are becoming more liquid,” said Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of the Overseas Guides Company. “The choice of investment vehicles for pensioners has suddenly opened up, and we expect a large portion of people to channel capital into property investments, both abroad and at home, which offer capital appreciation and higher yields compared to typical annuities or savings accounts. There will be many retirees and people close to retiring who want to explore this route, and our new guide and team are here to assist them. “Looking at just the UK market,” continued Koutsoudes, “the effects

of the Mortgage Market Review which kicks in at the end of April is expected to trigger further demand in the already bullish buy-to-let market.” UK buy-to-let is an increasingly popular choice of investment for British people who retire abroad. It brings in income and allows expats to retain a Sterling asset. Typically, a retired couple will downsize when they move abroad, selling the UK family home and buying both a smaller overseas home and a rental investment in the UK. “It’s a simple model that works for many, but we’d also encourage people to explore the option of investing in an overseas buy-to-let or other type of property investment, as they can often work harder for your money.” The other types of investments being promoted by the Overseas Investor Guide are those with a lifestyle element. Koutsoudes concludes: “This means they offer some kind of personal usage, so the owner gets enjoyment out of their investment, as well as financial benefit. This could be investment in a hotel scheme, or American-style condo resort or simply buying in a managed complex where the management company reserve the owners a set number of weeks each year. There’s lots of choice these days, but our Guide will help people narrow down their realistic options and make an informed investment decision.”

Bar Unique

YOU HAVE BOUGHT A PROPERTY AND IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE BARGAIN…

Legal Matters

Help for Expats in Spain

25

As a good citizen, you paid your purchase taxes (8% of the price of the property) but now you have received a letter from the tax office telling you that you need to pay more taxes since their valuation of the property is higher than the price you paid. Why is that?

LEGALLY ACCEPTABLE MINIMUM VALUE FOR TAX PURPOSES

Bar Unique is a brand new bar offering weekly live music.

If you and the seller declare an amount considered too little, then the Spanish Tax Agency can bill you, as buyer of the property, for the amount they deem underpaid. This problem is now occurring on normal legal transactions when you are lucky to get an absolute bargain. This is because a property is given a cadastral value for property tax purposes. During any given period, the tax office, rather than revalue all the properties, just declare a multiplier to this value to give the legally Multipliers acceptable minimum value for a property or piece of Albox 2,55 land. If you pay less than this total assumed value (after Antas 1,07 the multiplier is applied) you will get an invoice for the Arboleas 3,00 tax due on the amount between the price on the deeds and their figure. Bédar 1,00

How much is the MULTIPLIER where i live ? Here is a list of towns and their multiplier:

Cantoria 2,30

Can this decision be challenged ?

Fines 2,11

Yes, it can. You can submit a complaint to the Spanish Tax Agency and request a valuation of the property by an independent valuer in view of the special characteristics of the property.

book review “What if he is the Messiah? Aren’t we morally obliged to save his life if he’s here to save the world?” This is Jodi’s 15th novel delving into lots of serious moral issues about capital punishment and organ donation. You’ll also experience some interesting discussion on religion and spirituality from different religious denominations as well as the atheists and gnostics. It raises questions over whether religion makes us more or less tolerant and whether what we believe is always the truth. Is religion divisive or does it unite? Following the modern trend, there are multiple-narrators and they are credible characters questioning life and suffering. June is the most tragic person having lost her first husband in a car accident. Daughter Elizabeth and June miraculously survived. She was inconsolable but a policeman called Kurt was there to comfort her and she grew to love him so in time they married. Shay Bourne, a vagrant, comes looking for work and June reluctantly takes him on. His arrival was unexpected just like a flyer from a summer carnival that blusters in on a winter wind. Heavily pregnant with Claire, June returns from antenatal to discover a shoot-out in her home, Elizabeth and Kurt the casualties. Shay Bourne was convicted of double murder. Kurt Nealon had been shot in the line of

duty after attempting to arrest Bourne after being found with Elizabeth, her underwear in his pocket. “Blood splattered her face and matted her hair; her eyes were still wide open. Her dress, hiked up when she had fallen, showed that she was naked from the waist down.” Michael is a math student writing his thesis when he is called to the jury for what was considered the crime of the century. It was the kind of crime that demanded the death penalty, the first time in 58 years. Michael was about the same age as the accused and he makes a chilling remark that he could easily have been Bourne and vice-versa. The evidence seemed conclusive and indisputable that Bourne was guilty of committing a heinous crime but should he be injected with a lethal dose? The jury had to make that decision. Michael was the last juror to be persuaded it was the right choice. Shay Bourne was bounced around the foster care system and he had a sister he hadn’t seen since he was 16. He had set alight to his foster home and his foster father had perished. For this he served 2 years in a juvenile detention facility. He had untreated bipolar disorder and poor reading, writing and language skills. He accepted his fate and was resolved to die but he needed redemption. Eleven years later he joins I-tier alongside Lucius, Calloway Rees,

Texas Wridell, Pogie Simmons and Crash. Michael becomes a priest and Bourne’s spiritual comforter, Maggie, an atheist, represents him as well as plugging her own causeraising enough awareness of the death penalty. She wants to protect Bourne’s religious freedoms when he requests that his heart be donated to June’s ailing daughter Claire, once he has been executed. June is presented with an untenable moral dilemma: what kind of mother would she be if she let that monster donate his heart OR what kind of a mother would she be if she turned it down and let her surviving daughter die? A change of heart is needed for both June as well as Claire and the New Jersey state. With Bourne’s arrival to I-tier some very strange things happen. So-called miracles caused people to feel extremely uncomfortable about this murderer. Who was he? “They were nothing like Jesus’s-or were they? Water into wine. feeding many with virtually nothing. Healing the sick. making the blind-or in Calloway’s case, the prejudicedsee.” More than 500 people camped outside the prison calling him a saviour. It’s about finding out the truth and this can be

disturbing especially when life is built on deception so if you want something comforting you’ll find Change of Heart can offer you that. The suspect who was carrying a red umbrella is not the one who was wearing black shoes. The thief owns a black car. The suspect who owns a white car is not the one who weighs 170 pounds. Bill Edison was wearing brown shoes. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds is not the one who has red hair

logic puzzle solution:

Answer: Marty Jones

SOLTIMES APRIL 2014

We can rule out Fred from our investigations as he was the victim. Brian Martin owns a green car. The thief owns a black car, so Brian Martin is not the murderer. The suspect who owns a black car was wearing blue shoes. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds was wearing blue shoes. The suspect who weighs 190 pounds is not the one who has red hair. Therefore, one suspect was wearing blue shoes, owns a black car, weighs 190 pounds, & is not the one who has red hair. But Bill Edison was wearing brown shoes, John Fox has red hair, Larry Smith weighs 210 pounds, and Brian Martin owns a green car. Therefore, the only suspect who could be this suspect is Marty Jones. Since this suspect, Marty Jones, owns a black car and the thief owns a black car, he is the thief.

SOLTIMES APRIL 2014

www.soltimes.com

The speed of time I am convinced that in Spain we do not get a full length 60 second minute, 60 minute hour and 24 hour day. Time is not a constant, it passes more quickly here. If you are late, time rushes by, its rate of acceleration proportionate to the importance of whatever it is for which you must be punctual. Yet should you be in the dentist’s waiting room it drags its heels and scuffs its toes, allowing plenty of opportunity for you to fully savour the sound of the dentist’s drill. In the mornings I get up, have my coffee, and already it is 9.30; I got out of bed at 8, and I’m

still not dressed! I leave the house to go to Mercadona before 10, yet I return at the best part of 2. By the time I’ve had lunch it is time to feed the Dog That Is Not Ours, and then start on supper! Where have all the intervening bits of time gone? Have they gone swirling down some time plughole, to re-emerge in Australia? Because as sure as eggs is eggs, they were missing from my day! However, thinkingabout it, I can account for quite a bit of the missing time. For instance, I spend a goodly part of each day wandering around looking for the Wotsit which I had a minute ago, but put down to do something else. Then when I have found it, I have forgotten why I wanted it. So I have to go back to where I was before to remember josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk what it was that I was

By Jos Biggs

doing before. By this time another job has sprung up out of nowhere, but that’s OK, I can do that at the same time as…….Oh, no I can’t! I need the Dubrie for that, and it’s in the shed. So I fetch the shed key and open the shed, then remember that the Dubrie is in the Everything drawer in the kitchen. Now I’ve got the Wotsit and the Dubrie, and can complete both tasks and move on with my day – just as soon as I remember that I haven’t shut the shed! I estimate that I could save at least an hour a day, possibly more, if only I could ever remember what it was that I was supposed to be remembering! But even allowing for that, I still am convinced that time passes more quickly here!

alqueria The Hunt John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

April marks the opening of the Alquerian bear hunting season. Ursus arctos arctos, or Eurasian Brown Bear or rather the Alquerian Brown Bear a particularly savage and extremely nasty sub species is the hunted. The chinless wonders and ‘OK Ya’ sect of the Newcomer’s barrio the hunters. The Alquerian Brown Bear was said by Alfonso Attenboro, the world renown naturalist to be the most dangerous unpredictable and inherently evil creature he had ever come across. The males have huge razor sharp claws of some twelve centimetres in length while the strength of the teeth is phenomenal. The female of the species is far more dangerous as with females of all species they have a tongue a dangerous weapon in any feminine mouth. The people who hunt these vicious merciless killers must be brave indeed. Armed only with semi-automatic high power rifles they sit ‘exposed’ in steel enclosures mounted on the back of four-wheel drive vehicles. A mystery as the bears have never shot back. These fearless stalkers set out at dawn, after a ‘stirrup cup’ of Remitroot Whisky they scour the outlying areas for these dangerous animals. They also scour the bars just on the off chance that one may have popped in for a quick half. The atmosphere is tense as five-hundred kilos of malevolent flesh could be waiting behind the next tree, there could also be a bear there of course. Are the hunters afraid? Are they apprehensive? Not a bit of it they laugh at danger. Why, mainly because the animals have been extinct for the

last twenty-three years. Forty years ago a rather ambitious and over optimistic lemming interbred with an Alquerian Brown Bear. The mental image of this event is perhaps one that shouldn’t be conjured up. The Lemming’s suicidal gene appeared to the fore and the bear population soon inherited and even enhanced it. There then followed two decades of danger. Bears would plummet from the cliff edges of the high sierra at regular intervals. They were becoming a public menace. Insurance companies refused to supply cover as the carnivores rained down onto the streets of Alqueria. As the bear population dwindled so did the probability of being flattened by one. Eventually on one fateful Friday afternoon the last bear hurled itself from the heights above the Village and a unique life form ceased to exist. The place from where the animal leaped became known as Bear Pass but as that led to some confusion as to what exactly was bare it was rechristened ‘The Place Where Suicidal Bears Hurl Themselves From Cliff Ledges’. A name still retained to this day, why? Well it is Alqueria after all.

Defining the Indefinable

Friendship is a great thing. I’ll go further than that; friendship is the best thing in life. If you have friends – real friends – then you are rich beyond compare. Okay, an Aston Martin DB9 Volante; a multi roll-over win on Euro Millions and a night out with Joanna Lumley are right up there, but still come as second best. Of course, by definition your better other half should fall into this category and in my case, the lovely Mrs Bird is best friend number one. No question, that’s what an ideal partnership is all about. But what about those other people who have made an impact on our lives and stand out as something extra special. I’m not a Bible scholar, but somewhere in there, someone said, “Greater love has no one than this - that someone lay down his life for his friends”. That sounds a bit extreme, but on the other hand what better way to show your love, respect and devotion to another human being. After all history is peppered with examples of people doing just that in times of conflict and not only for friends and brothers in arms, but for complete strangers. So it got me thinking even more about just what friends actually are; how best to describe friendship and how many people that we routinely term as friends, are really just valued close acquaintances. It seems to me that there is no word in the English language that defines

By Colin Bird :

the group of people you share a few drinks or a meal with, or even a weekend away once in a while. Those not quite bosom friends, but a lot more than just companions type people. I have occasionally met up with old friends from my young carefree days, or even further back from school and it has often become immediately obvious that we no longer share anything in common. I only have to hear the words mortgage, kids, or fortnight in Ibiza and my brain starts to devise plausible excuses so that I can drink up and leave at the earliest possible time - preferably before it’s my round. Keep in touch they say as I make for the bar exit. Yeah right I think, around the same time as man colonises the outer rim of the galaxy. It’s not their fault, and it’s certainly not mine, but life does that to you. We take paths that we would never have contemplated or chosen for ourselves years earlier, but once taken mould us into alien beings and unrecognisable to our erstwhile buddies. So how do you define true friendship? Back when the Swinging Sixties were just about to merge with the new sequinned studded Seventies, I would spend practically every weekend, with the same group of close friends. Friday night - a pint or five at our tavern of preference and maybe catch some folk music at another favourite establishment. On Saturday night it would be T-bone steaks and Black Forest gateaux, washed down with a bottle or two of Blue Nun and rounded off with a Courvoisier and a Castella. Then on to a club to try our luck with some mini skirted beauties, and indulge in extremely silly dancing.

Holidays, parties, football matches, we were inseparable. Then, for various reasons we briefly went our separate ways. The usual culprits: love, careers, and for a couple of us, the opportunity to work abroad. But something strange happened in those few years and although all of those guys remain close to each other today, it’s as if yours truly has grown two heads, because with only two exceptions, I seem to have become a complete stranger to them, it’s as if those halcyon days never happened. To my certain knowledge, I have never groped any of their wives, stolen their Curly Wurly’s or developed leprosy. It just happened. Conversely, the princess and I travelled to Vancouver in 2012 for our biennial reunion with friends from our 1970’s Bermuda days. We rarely have the opportunity to meet up because we are separated by continents and live in such places as Canada, the US and Dubai as well as Bermuda itself, but we were unanimous in stating that it is as if the intervening years had never happened. As always we all slotted comfortably back into each others’ company and simply carried on where we had left off. The unspoken loyalty and deep affection that we had for each other is as real now as it was then. And so it will be again shortly, when we host this year’s get together in Spain. So to answer my original question, just how do you define friendship and how do you know who your real firm, life-long friends are? Well, you just do that’s all.

Ear Infections in Dogs: Symptoms, Causes and Treatments Ear infections in dogs are common and most dogs suffer from this painful condition sometime in their life. Scratching and rubbing at the ear(s) and head shaking are common signs. You may also notice an abnormal odor from the ear or see redness or swelling. Most ear infections in adults are caused by bacteria and yeast, though ear mites are a common cause in puppies. Your veterinarian will take a sample from the affected ear(s) and examine it under the microscope to help identify what microorganisms are present.

Treatment for Dog Ear Infection

For successful treatment you must clean the ear with a gentle cleanser as the ear will be painful. An effective way to clean the ear is to fill the ear canal with the cleaning solution, place an appropriate-sized cotton ball in the ear canal opening, then gently massage the ear at the base. The cotton ball serves several functions. It acts as a lid to the allow the fluid to go back and forth in the canal, it absorbs the excess solution and Let us transport your it holds onto the debris loving friends to and as it comes up, letting from the UK & Europe you know what is down in the ear canal. As long in comfort with as your dog tolerates it, loving care in our you can clean the ear air-conditioned van several times until the Tel 950 092 096 or 661 402 493 cotton ball comes out Email jt.transport@yahoo.co.uk fairly clean. few cautions when cleaning a dog’s ear. Do not use Q-Tip swabs as they may push debris deeper into the ear canal and rupture the eardrum. Do not use rubbing alcohol or other solutions that are irritating to inflamed skin (Think of the skin inside the ear of a dog with an ear infection as a rash), After the ear canal has been cleaned, allow it to dry for approximately 10 minutes. Then instill the medication(s) your veterinarian has prescribed (medicated ointment or drops). The length of treatment depends on the patient, severity of infection, and any changes to the ear (i.e., thickening of the tissue in the ear). In some cases oral medications are necessary (antibiotics, anti-yeast, anti-inflammatory). Your veterinarian will schedule rechecks to make sure the medications are working and the infection is cleared.

Causes and Prevention of Ear Infection in Dogs

Prevention depends on identifying the underlying cause of the ear infection. In some cases the ear canal becomes moist from bathing, grooming or swimming. This moisture fosters the growth of microorganisms in the ear canal. Prevention in these cases can be as simple as cleaning the ear as previously described to remove the moisture and prevent the infection. However, in many cases an underlying cause may not be so easily identified. Dogs that suffer from allergies, either environmental, such as pollens (grasses, trees and weeds), dust mites, molds or food (beef, chicken, fish, soy, etc.) are predisposed to ear infections. This is due to the microscopic inflammation that allergies cause in the skin allowing overgrowth of bacterial and yeast organisms that normally inhabit the skin. What microorganism is causing the ear infection and what is the underlying cause? Routine cleaning with a gentle dog-approved ear cleaner may be necessary to reduce the frequency of recurrent ear infections in dogs with allergies. Cleaning your dog’s ears after a bath or grooming appointment may prevent any potential infections. Source and Image: www.cesarsway.com/

Cortijo Grande Golf

Eye-catching design at an attractive price. That’s the combination on offer from Nissan with its Juke, the increasingly fashionable compact sports utility vehicle. There’s no denying it, it’s a great design that from a distance looks like a three door but thanks to cleverly concealed rear door handles it is actually a five door vehicle. For under £15,000 excl. VAT it represents extremely good value for money, too. It seems to appeal to all generations from the young girl who cycles past and tells her dad how she likes it through to the middle aged man who simply stands and stares and the gentleman of senior years who I spot driving his in Weymouth. Arguably the brown finish of the test vehicle really does lend itself to the design although I feel that cream leather upholstery would compliment this particularly well. As it is, the black cloth seats are comfortable even over a fairly long journey from Hampshire to Dorset. The raised ride height is always a welcome bonus for me because it gives greater command of the road. It also allows the driver to spot parking spaces that others do not in packed car parks. I find the 1.5 diesel unit pleasantly poky at speeds under 60mph with third gear being very receptive between 30mph and 60mph. Over that speed it proves slower than expected and at times struggles to hold its own while in the outside lane of the motorway. Hills slow it up a bit requiring a change down to fourth gear but it is only a 1.5 litre and a diesel and so overall it does a good job. With hard driving it will return over 40mpg. The best recorded was around 47mpg. Perhaps surprisingly the Juke really does hold the road and feels like its on rails when cornering, meaning that it can be driven with gusto even round bends. Rather than simply being an attractive head-turner it is also pleasingly a driver’s car helped by the fairly hard suspension. The n-tec model tested also comes fitted with cruise control which is useful for motorway cruising. The test takes place just after the UK has been badly battered by storms and the Juke copes with the floods admirably. Just down the road from my parents in law there is an enormous flood that has

Nissan Juke

previously shut the road but the Juke makes light work of it. Reversing the Juke is made easier by the camera display on the dashboard. Without that it would be a little tricky due to the design of the rear. While we’re talking about the rear, it looks a little awkward to me, there is something that could be improved about it but I can’t quite put my finger on it. Head on and the side profile both get a firm 10 out of 10 but the rear gets 8. Inside is well equipped with all round electric windows, air conditioning and sat nav as you can see in the video at testdrives.biz. I also like the bulbous chrome door handles. There is enough room inside for four or five occupants to be comfortable and the boot is large enough for a pushchair. A very capable and enjoyable SUV. By Tim Saunders

24 players arrived at Aguilon to play their first round of golf, which was a Medal Round, on the newly configured course, strangely the course seemed to play differently but still a big challenge for a lot of players. Peter Easthope easily won the Medal with a one over nett 71, this inspite of the fact that in his excitement to start his round he forgot to change into his golf shoes, teeing off in his beach shoes and running back to the car to change whilst the rest of his group took their shots. Peter

Dow

had

an

inspired round recording a Nett 74 to take second place just pipping Paco Ocaña who scored a Nett 75. Peter s result was even more impressive considering he had to contend with the distraction of his wife’s sandwiches being stolen, adjacent to the 2nd green, by feral cats. Brian (Dee) Lowden had another miserable result in the main event but cheered up with a Two on the 3rd. In the Ladies Medal Nekana Galindez scored a Nett 75 to take the medal, whilst a hungry Christine Dow was second with a Nett 79

Almeria Bowling Club 2014 Millennium Trophy Open Mixed Triple Sponsored by Scottsdale Overseas (Individual Finance advisor) The Millennium Trophy has had several changes of format over the years since it’s inauguration in year 2000. It began with ‘Millennium Invitation Rinks’ when three teams of ‘Fours’ were invited from all of our local bowling clubs to play a one day round robin format competition. In those days clubs were a lot less populated and reasonably easy to implement without upsetting other members who weren’t invited as one of the three teams. Times have also changed to allow the current one day format of Open Mixed Triples round robin. This year was very well attended by Indalo, Cabrera,Mojacar B.C. and of course ourselves, Almeria. The weather was a beautiful sunny day where 20 drawn teams divided into two groups played three timed games of up to eight

The winners were an Almeria triple, Ruth Compton, David Malatynski and Maria Morley from Almeria. , Mike Johnson, Keith and Linda Harvey of Indalo were runners up. Third was from Indalo Derek Webb, Allan and Mo DeBoer and fourth a mixed team from Indalo and Cabrera, Doreen Hall, Peter Sands and Clive Taylor. Prize giving took place on the Almeria Veranda. Our Captain Colin Wright then asked our Sponsor, Brian White of Scottsdale Overseas,to present theprizes. Both Colin and yours truly thanked all those players taking part, Stan Brisco for umpiring and doing a great job in timing the games, Sandra Bain for administrating the competition, controlling score cards and results. We all then went down to the Miraflores Ballroom to enjoy a special arranged Carvery and refreshment. Thanks to the management and the staff for their extra time given to us in allowing this to happen. Photographs were then taken and can be viewed on our Website www.bowlingalmeria.com , www.bowlinginspain.com and Sol Times if there is space. Vic Parsons ALBC Press Officer and Vice Chairman
