‘Wine therapy’ wins over Dancing in the moonlight with Barrington tourists in Spain
By combining architectural masterpieces, ultra-modern showrooms and luxurious hotels, Spanish wineries manage to attract more and more wine lovers from around the world. Walking by rows of oak barrels in the dark corridors of a winery founded by her great-grandfather, María José López de Heredia is reminded of her childhood. “We played hide and seek here when we were children,” the 46-year-old said. Today, together with her brother and sister, she runs the Rafael López de Heredia Tondonia winery, one of the oldest and most famous in Spain’s northern region of La Rioja, in the village of Haro. “This is home,” she said as she opened a black metal door leading into a storage room where spiders are allowed to live peacefully on their thick webs to protect the corks of bottles. It is a home that is visited by 22,000 people each year, who explore the vineyards and its underground labyrinth that stores the 400,000 bottles of wine which are produced annually by the winery. It is not alone. Located far from the beaches that bring millions of tourists to Spain each year, La Rioja has sought over the past decade to draw visitors to its numerous wineries, many featuring stunning contemporary architecture. “It’s great to discover a place like this, I did not know it before,” said Bill Sherman, a 72-year-old wine lover from Atlanta, Georgia as he sipped a glass of wine in the ultra-modern showroom-shop of the Heredia Tondonia winery. Designed by British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid, the first woman to win the Pritzker prize, architecture’s equivalent of the Nobel prize, the shop is a glassfaced structure shaped like a large wine carafe. It sits in stunning counterpoint to the great-grandfather’s old restored stone shop nearby, and is an example of how in the 2000s, before the collapse of a property bubble in Spain in 2008, wineries in La Rioja began to build
architectural gems by star architects to help draw visitors.
Wine before all else “The architecture is just the wrapping, the wine is what matters above all else,” said the winery’s spokeswoman Marta Gomez. The wineries, or “bodegas” as they are called in Spanish, designed by big name architects have given La Rioja “great visibility”, said La Rioja’s regional tourism minister Gonzalo Capellan. “Wine tourism is very much appreciated” by Britons, Germans and Americans, he added.
AUAN, 11th August 2014 Residents of the Almanzora Valley had a rare treat on Saturday 9th August when they were entertained under the stars by the popular Soul, Motown and Reggae artist, Barrington. The event, sponsored by IBEX Insurance, raised 1804.58 euros for the property owners association AUAN, who campaign to improve the situation of homeowners who unknowingly purchased an illegal property in good faith in the area with many facing legal problems and some denied access to electricity and water some 9 years after the problems first came to light. It was a real community occasion with local businesses donating all of the raffle prizes and selling tickets. AUANs president, Maura Hillen, thanked Rancho
“We export 150 million bottles to these markets each year. They want to know us, see where this bottle is born,” he added. Today about 80 wineries in La Rioja open their doors to visitors, compared to just a handful a decade ago. “This is a natural resource which we had. We had to turn it into a touristic product. This involved a huge change in thinking,” said Capellan. This change has not always gone smoothly, said Ramon Estalella, the secretary general of the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Lodgings. “We have sometimes built very beautiful hotels, charming, but too small for the investment to be profitable,” he said before recommending that wineries seek tourism experts for advice on how to move into the hospitality sector. López de Heredia of the Heredia Tondonia winery acknowledged there was a lack of experience. “In our house we were trained as winegrowers, not as a tourism company. We are just starting,” she said. While visitors to the winery are gaining importance, “they will never supplant the work of the vineyard,” she added. Source: The Local
Luz del Sol, The Fragrance Spot in Los Llanos market, Colin the Card, Girasol, Albox Rugs, Wavelengths, Simply Art, La Vida Dulce, the Sleep Centre, Total Entertainment and Glad Rags and Smooth FM (89.8) for their generous donations and support. “Everyone has been fantastic and we are delighted with the results. The monies raised will go towards promoting changes to the law to improve the situation of those who have an illegal house and to improve legal certainty and standards in the property market in general.” Photographs: 1) Barrington entertaining the crowd. 2) Berni Campbell (on right) of IBEX Insurance Albox presenting a 50 Euro fuel voucher to a lucky raffle winner.

News Despite gains against sterling, euro still under pressure
Despite parts of Europe enjoying a bank holiday on Friday, the single currency managed to make moderate gains against sterling and the US dollar. There has been little data to improve the economic outlook for the Eurozone over the last few days, yet the euro has avoided further severe weakening against major currencies and has made considerable ground against sterling. Influential events are weighted towards the end of the week this week, with Thursday and Friday likely to provide the most impetus for rate movements. Monthly manufacturing data is due from France and Germany on Thursday. Even the Eurozone powerhouses seem to
be losing momentum of late, and key indicators such as manufacturing figures will help to determine whether output is indeed flat-lining or whether there is hope yet for the stalling recovery. We end the week with an address from European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi, in which he may shed some light on his take on the precarious state of economic affairs, as well as provide potential insights into future monetary policy decisions. Spain is beautiful, and in the summer months not only do locals get out and about to drive the scenic routes or take short weekend jaunts, but many tourists drive vehicles into the sunshine to explore all the fun, festive and fabulous things that the country has to offer. This means that more people are on our roads, and more vehicles are sharing the Spanish highways in the summer months more than any other time of the year therefore, an increase in the risk off traffic accidents normally occurs.

“ TEAM HARMONY” HOW IT ALL BEGAN
This month I thought that I would tell you a little about the history of Team Harmony and some of the it’s members. Originally our fundraising started in 2008 and our first event was “I’m a celebrity get me out of here” held at our home in Lorca in aid of PAWS animal charity. We thought that this would be a one off, but while having dinner with friends one night, one of the group told us about her problems with the cancer treatment that she was receiving and the huge help that MACS cancer support group was in helping her to cope both practically and emotionally, so after a few glasses of wine “Spain’s Got Talent” was launched. We had no idea at this point how it would work, but I have to say, people were fantastic, we very quickly had 12 acts entered and 180 tickets sold. It was a brilliant evening and we went on to hold 2 more contests raising money for Help for Heroes and San Animal ( a locally based animal charity) Plus some smaller events over this time, raising a total of €18,000 We had thought to retire at this point until the murder of Lee Rigby when my husband Dennis Blandford felt so strongly that as ex pats we should stand together against such atrocities. So we decided to hold an event at The Aguilas Resort Hotel and the support was phenomenal from local businesses and people wanting to attend the event. More than €2,300 was donated to the “The Fusiliers aid fund.” We thought that our fundraising needed an identity so Team Harmony was born. This then spurred us on to organise another event in March this year again in aid of MACS cancer support Group. The response was unbelievable and more that €5100 was handed over to MACS. We have to date raised more that €26000 and hope to make this €30000 by the end of the year. We certainly could not have achieved any of this
without the generosity and pure talent of the acts that have given so much of their time which include Martin Ross Lawford, The CAS band, The Classic Rock Band, Suzy Gee, Rough Justice, Dee, Paul Michael and Stevie Spit. Thank you to all for your continued support. Well, now I need to tell you about some of the team. most of whom have been with us from the very beginning. We have the most amazing bunch of people that give so much of their time, some travel more that one and a half hours to attend our events, pay for their tickets and then work all night so don’t even see the show. Not only this , some also work tirelessly for Macs cancer support charity, others for san Animal. I am totally in awe of such special people that just give so much and feel very proud to work alongside them. As we were only formed as Team Harmony in January I find it incredible that we have a website, entirely designed and managed by Andy Eustace. A fabulous Team Harmony song has been written and sung by Paul Hawtin and a team poem written by the very talented Christine Lawford and of course our very own Angel jewellery range designed and made by Joan Claridge. I also need to mention that Elaine Meynell from San Animal spends many hours designing our posters and tickets. I asked some of the team to speak about their part in this venture and the funniest was from Joan Claridge who said “ being a member of Team Harmony is like being on one of those scary funfair rides, you don’t know why you do it but you want to go back for more” Jeannie and Tony Kettle “ we love being part of Team Harmony, not only do we have great fun at the events, but it’s so nice to know that you’re doing some good at the same time” Fran and Geoff Cook “Geoff and I became aware of Anne and Dennis and their fundraising quests when
they came to offer their services and ideas to MACS President and her hubby Dave. MACS welcomed this generous opportunity to raise funds for patients suffering from Cancer and their carers. For some of us involved in MACS it meant giving Anne and Dennis some support and help even volunteering to participate in ACTS for the shows they put on in the grounds of their home. We always have loads of fun and raise mega amounts of money for charity” Ron Leach said “I have been working with Anne and Dennis for some years now and we have raised thousands for various charities. So when Team Harmony was launched I was pleased to help whenever I am Needed. The team work very well together and the events we have put on have been fantastic providing great entertainment for everybody and at the same time making a lot of money for so many good causes. I am looking forward to the upcoming events.” Andy Eustace designer and Manager of the Team Harmony website commented “In early 2014 Team Harmony had expanded to the point that we felt it would be beneficial to have a website in order to advertise our various forthcoming events along with memories of our previous successes. Our domain name TeamHarmonySpain was registered in February and the website has continued to grow as we have now included advertisements for registered charities in and around our part of Spain. We have followers in 21 countries across the world and receive many queries and offers of support” If you would like more information please email teamharmony@icloud.com or visit our Facebook page “Team Harmony Spain” or website www. teamharmonyspain.com

SPANISH WILLS & INHERITANCES A will is one of the most common legals needs, but less than 25% of Europeans have one!
As you may know a will is not exclusively about making sure that the right people will inherit without disagreement or problems. It is a formal declaration of intention made by a person in their life-time of thier wishes concerning the disposal of their property after their death. We understand the need to preserve and protect your assests and those of your family. If you have purchased or already have property in Spain, we strongly recommend you to make a Spanish will in order to facilitate the distribution of your Spanish assests.

Backed by the Peñarrubia and Calo de los Enamorados mountains, the historic city of Lorca faces down the fertile plains of Murcia towards the Sierra de la Almenara, beyond which lies the crystal blue Mediterranean sea. Lorca is approximately 1 hour 40 minutes drive to the north of Almeria Airport, and 1 hour 30 minutes to the west of Murcia San Javier Airport
History In 1964 Lorca was declared a Historic and Artistic site. Lorca is known as the “baroque city” due to the significant number of buildings in this style. From the Paleolithic period until Roman times, a wide variety of cultures and settlers converged on the ancient city of Lorca. The many archaeological sites are testament to this: The Milaria Column from the Roman age, the Tower of Espolón or the Alfonsina Tower, is but a few. The San Antonio Porch, a gate from the old walled enclosure which guarded the city, from the 10th century; the churches and convents of different ages and styles; and the palaces and baroque stately homes, such as the palace of Guevara, the palace of the Counts of San Julián or the Mula ancestral home, are all of historical interest. The fortress, which transformed the medieval citadel into an impregnable prize, is very impressive. Popular architecture can be seen on the cobbled streets, which flank Plaza de España, like the Zapatería and the Cava.
Culture The Teatro Guerra, is in the Plaza Calderon de la Barca, Calle Principe Alfonso, facing the square. It is a regal red and white building. The theatre offers a wide variety of events, including cinema, children’s theatre, drama, musicals, concerts, dances and opera. Tickets can be purchased in advance from ticketmaster. Lorca also has a fine Archeological Museum, run by the city council. Markets The weekly market dates back to 1465, when Enrique IV granted a free market on Thursdays. The concession was confirmed by the Catholic Monarchs in 1495 and by Charles II in 1685. It was first celebrated in the streets near the cathedral of Santa Maria By the 16th century it was next to the church of San Patricio. It even took place for a time in the pig market at Santa Quiteria. Today the weekly market is held in the Huerto de la Rueda every Thursday. There are two food markets, one at Explanada de la Estación, and the other at
the aptly named Plaza de las Hortalizas. Leisure & recreation In the countryside around there are great opportunities for the walker and the long distance runner. Try the Ruta del Cajo de los Enamorados. For the cyclist there is a labyrinth of quiet rural roads amongst the market gardens to explore, or for the more adventurous there are some pretty testing routes up in the hills. The extreme sport of throwing yourself off a high mountain attached to a flimsy bit of cloth (hang-gliding) is practiced off the top of the Peñarubia. Check your travel insurance before giving it a go! Beaches The wonderful beaches at the port of Aguilas are just 30 minutes drive. Mazzaron at 45 minutes has some fine beaches, and is a popular resort with many facilities. Cuisine The plains of Murcia are incredibly fertile, and produce a vast array of fresh fruit and vegetables, which make up the base ingredients of the regions cuisine. Rice is also staple here, and finds it’s
way into many dishes. The abundant and varied seafood from the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean, along with game and farmed meat from the mountains complete the picture. Some typical dishes include: Arroz y Conejo (rice with rabbit), Arroz de Verduras (Rice and Vegetables), Arroz y Costillejas (rice and ribs), Arroz Marinero (seafood rice) and Paella Huertana, a vegetable paella. Non-rice dishes specialities include Potaje, a rich stew dish; Menestra, a dish of sautéed vegetables; Habas con jamón” (ham and broad beans and Caldo Murciano, a local soup dish. The king prawns fished in the area are also particularly fine, and the Huevas de Mújol, a type of caviar, is also a high delicacy of the region. Climate Lorca enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate. Very hot in summer and protected by surrounding mountains against the cold North winds in winter. The area averages nearly 3,000 hours of sunshine each year and the average temperature easily exceeds 20 degrees. www.spain-holiday.com

Two foreign tourists are Nigerian man in Alicante still missing hospital does not have Ebola, say doctors
Two foreign tourists are still missing after a boat sank off the coast of eastern Indonesia on Saturday. Twenty foreign tourists, an Indonesian guide and four crew were on board when the boat foundered near Sangeang Api, a volcanic island off Sumbawa. Ten people were rescued initially and another 13, including all the crew, were found alive early on Monday. They are being treated in hospital for trauma and dehydration as a search continues for the remaining two people. The Indonesian military has joined the search to find the two remaining tourists, a Dutch man and an Italian woman. Speedboats and a helicopter have been deployed, but authorities say rescue efforts are hampered by bad weather and high waves. Officials said the incident took place when the boat, sailing from Lombok island to Komodo island, hit a wave that was 3m high and crashed into a reef. It sprung a leak and sank. Rescue officials told agencies that the second group were found together by fishermen. Some of them were in a lifeboat while others were floating in their lifejackets. The survivors were now recovering in Sape city in
Sumbawa, they said. Survivors said that as the boat started sinking, some got into a lifeboat which could only take up to seven passengers. Others climbed onto the roof of the boat which had not yet completely sunk. They eventually split into two groups when it became clear that there were not enough lifeboats nor communication tools to call for help. One group decided to swim six to seven hours to reach Sangeang Api, while the others stayed with the lifeboat. French survivor Bertrand Homassel was in the first group. He told AFP: “We were 5km (three miles) from the coast and there were many big waves separating us from the coast. People started to panic and everyone took the decision to swim to the closest island.” After spending the night on the island by eating leaves and drinking their own urine, that group was rescued by a passing boat on Sunday. The other survivors who stayed with the lifeboat, who were rescued on Monday, were in the water for about 40 hours. The other tourists came from the UK, Germany, Spain, and New Zealand. A NIGERIAN national isolated in hospital in San Juan (Alicante province) has tested negative for the deadly Ebola virus, medics confirm. The 30-yearold went to Alicante General Hospital with his sister, describing symptoms including vomiting, bleeding, a fever of 38.3ºC and a general feeling of being very unwell. He had recently visited his home country, where several cases of the haemorrhagic virus have been reported, among which have been at least two deaths. The patient and his sister were immediately isolated in separate, sealed-off wings. Although the woman did not have any symptoms, she had been in close physical contact with her brother, meaning if he had been infected, she may well have caught the disease. Tests on her proved negative and she was discharged yesterday (Sunday) morning. Samples had been sent to Madrid’s Carlos III Epidemology Institute, part of the hospital of the same name where the missionary doctor Miguel Pajares, 75, recently died from Ebola after being
repatriated from Liberia. The Nigerian man remains in hospital for observation and is said to have been ‘stable’ the past two nights, but it is not thought that any more Ebola tests will be carried out. This is the second suspected case in Spain, both of which were in the eastern region of Valencia. A man from Guinea, who had landed at Valencia airport on a connecting flight from an undisclosed location in Morocco on June 25, was put straight into isolation in the city’s La Fe hospital amid suspicions he may be suffering with the lethal virus. Tests carried out came up negative and he was discharged within days. Given that the disease is raging out of control in Sierra Leone and Liberia, and is contained but rife in Guinea and, to a lesser degree, in Nigeria, Spain’s borders department Frontex has ceased all deportation of illegal immigrants who come from these countries, on humanitarian grounds. British Airways has stopped all flights to and from Sierra Leone and Liberia. SOURCE: thinkspain.com

Made in Spain: ice cream that changes colour
The ruins of numerous ancient Celtic settlements known as castros are still present in Galicia today. Photo: Castro de Baroña by Feans/Flickr
An ancient inscription discovered on a 14th century church in Spain’s Galicia region has been identified as Gaelic; the first written evidence of the northern region’s Irish and Scottish heritage. For centuries it has gone unnoticed, weathered by Galicia’s incessant drizzle but still visible to those with an eagleeye. On one of the granite walls of Santiago church in the small town of Betanzos, a small previously unintelligible inscription five metres above ground kept historians and epigraphists, or people who study ancient inscriptions, baffled for decades. Researchers working for a private association called the Gaelaico Project now believe they’ve finally deciphered what it reads: “An Ghaltacht” or “Gaelicspeaking area”. “If our interpretation is right, the inscription isn’t related to religious matters, but rather to the language that was spoken in Galicia at the time,” Proxecto Gaelaico head Martín Fernández Maceiras told local daily La
Voz de Galicia. “It seems logical that the inscription was made while the church was being built (in the 14th century).” Up to now, Galicia, along with Asturias and northern Portugal, have been informally considered part of the ancient Celtic nations (Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Isle of Man and Cornwall) due to cultural and historical reasons rather than because of written proof. Although researchers are hoping to get a second opinion from expert epigraphists on whether the inscription does indeed read “Gaelic-speaking area”, the chances of it being the first written evidence of Galicia’s Celtic past are high. Despite the dominance of Latin, there are plenty of Gaelic traits still present in Galicia,” James Duran, academic expert on minority languages at the US’s Stanford University, told La Voz de Galicia. A Spanish scientist-turned-chef has come up with the world’s first ever colour-changing ice cream. The secret ‘recipe’ is actually within us. Manuel Linares is no ordinary scientist. A qualified physician, engineer and mathematician, he started cooking classes as a way of combatting stress, he told online Spanish daily El Confidencial. He took his new passion to a level and completed an MA in ice cream making. That’s when he came up with his idea for an ice cream that changes colour as you lick it. “Everyone laughed, but as a physicist I know that there are various possibilities that might work and I was delighted when I managed to crack it and create an ice cream the changes colour,” Linares told the Science Recorder. Dubbed Xamaleon, the ice cream can lead people to postpone purchases reacts to the acidic nature of our in the hope of future price declines, a saliva and the heat of our tongues by reaction that brakes economic activity. changing colour from blue, to purple The phenomenon can quickly degenerate into a vicious downward spiral that is notoriously difficult to reverse. In April, Spain was identified by the IMF as the only country as “high risk” of deflation and called on the European Central Bank to take action. The European Central Bank has responded with unprecedented measures to head off deflation, including the introduction of negative interest rates for banks that want to deposit excess reserves with the central bank. Last week, the ECB held key its interest rates athas a record low level, stimulating economic activity by making it cheaper to borrow money. ECB president Mario Draghi pledged to keep rates low for an “extended period” in view of the inflation outlook in the single currency bloc. “Moreover, the governing council is unanimous in its commitment to also using unconventional instruments within its mandate, should it become necessary to further address risks of too prolonged a period of low inflation,” he said. Falling prices fuel fears of deflation for Spain
Spain reported on Tuesday the steepest slide in consumer prices in nearly five years, a potentially worrying development as the eurozone combats the threat of a deflationary spiral which could kill of Spain’s recovery. With Spaniards cautious about spending in an economy suffering a 24 per cent unemployment rate, consumer prices dropped a sharper-than-expected 0.4 per cent in the year to July, Spain’s National Statistics Institute said. The fall in prices in July was the sharpest since October 2009, the institute said, after revising its initial estimate of a 0.3 per cent decline. In the previous month, Spain’s economy, the fourth-largest in the eurozone, had reported an annual inflation rate of zero. Prices were kept down by the lower cost of entertainment, electricity, tobacco, food and soft drinks, the official statistician said. When compared to June, consumer prices slumped 1.5 per cent, it said, using figures that are measured in the same way across the European Union. The Spanish inflation report is likely to be of concern to policymakers trying to safeguard a gradual recovery in activity since the economy emerged in in mid2013 from a double-dip recession. and pink as it gets licked off. Although Linares hasn’t completed the patent process yet for his selfproclaimed “elixir of love”, the chameleonic cooler is only available in his newly opened ice cream parlour in the Catalan town of Blanes and in another store in neighbouring Calella de Mar (north-east Spain). The frozen dessert is a tutti frutti of flavours including strawberries, pistachio almonds, banana, caramel and vanilla; all of which are all-natural ingredients. “We’d love to set up more ice cream parlours across Europe offering the Xamaleon and many other awesome flavours we’re working on,” Linares told The Local. “I’ve had to put together a list for my mum of all the articles that have been written about my ice cream, she says she’s so proud of me and needs to show them all off to her friends.” Source: The Local

Whether it is a master bedroom or a guest room that doubles as a study, the key principles of bedroom design should always apply. The room plan Creating a room plan can help you decide where to place your bedroom furniture. Placing the bed is the main hurdle when planning the layout for a bedroom and a number of issues will influence the choice of spot: • Access - a double bed may require access for two occupants, so it shouldn’t be placed in a corner. Bunk beds need clearance space for safety and access to the upper bunk. • Power points/TV aerials/phone sockets - socket availability may dictate where bedside tables, a dressing table or a TV unit are placed. • Door - personal taste or feng shui may influence where the bed is placed in relation to the door. • Storage units - bear in mind that the bed should not be placed within the arc of opening wardrobe doors or drawers. Dressing the bed is as important as placing the furniture. Linen doesn’t have to slavishly match other fabrics in the room, but attention to colour and textures will help give the room a sense of style. Layering the bed with folded throws and scatter cushions creates a cosy and welcoming environment when not in use. Furniture myths and musts The bedroom has the longest list of supposed “must-have” furniture of any room in the house, but a crowded room looks untidy and is difficult to relax in. Consider these options: • Do all your clothes have to be stored in the bedroom? Clothes that are worn less frequently could be stored elsewhere, reducing the need for wardrobes. • Is a bedside cabinet needed or will a shelf do? • Must a computer work station be kept in the bedroom? Some sleep therapists suggest even the presence of a computer in bedroom can lead to disturbed nights. • Is a dressing table required if a bathroom vanity unit exists? Read more on: www.bbc.co.uk

Furniture pl acement
When planning a redesign of a room, try to break old habits and do something new. Experimenting with furniture layout will help create an interesting yet practical room. Furniture from elsewhere in the house may work well in another room. Equally, items that have traditionally been in a room don’t necessarily need to stay there. Scan your home for furniture swaps. Make a list of the items you want or need in your room. Use the room plan technique to see how different furniture groupings might look on paper before moving heavy items.
SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014
Here are a few tips: •B alance - a room where most of the furniture is squeezed into one area looks un-balanced. Draw an imaginary line through the room and balance the furniture placed in each half. •S ymmetry - this can help bring a designed feel to a room. For example, if an armchair is placed to the left of the fireplace, position another to mirror it on the right hand side. You may not have the space, furniture or inclination to follow this rule completely, but it can inspire. • T raffic - consider the most frequently used items in a room and the ease of access to them. In a kitchen, this principle is known as the ‘golden triangle’ and decides where to place the cooker and refrigerator in relation to the sink. The TV, sofa, door and fireplace can create similar traffic paths in a living room. •F irst impressions - it seems odd to consider that inanimate objects can create a welcome, but it’s true. If the view from a door way is predominantly of the backs of chairs and dresser sides, a visitor won’t be tempted in. Similarly, rows of furniture pushed against the walls seem uninviting, while angled groups look cosy. •C onvenience - a room must ultimately be adequate for the function it performs in the household and be comfortable for its residents. It may be the ultimate style statement, but if you can’t see the TV or eat comfortably at a table, something has gone wrong! Read more on: bbc.com

SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014
braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Oops! This weekend the 8 year old hard drive on my 6 year old desktop finally decided that it had just had enough! I people terms is has chronic arthritis and excessive decrepitude or to put it another way, it it just too darn old to carry on! Fortunately, I already had a data disk that was much bigger and only 6 months old so decided to recover my system to that. This is how I spent most of Sunday! First I had to back-up every unwatched movie, every music track, every family picture, actually – everything to external drives before formatting the drive, which re-organised how information was stored. This took nearly an hour to do and was the start of an educational day. Some months back you were introduced to a superb program that recovers an Operating System in 10-40 minutes depending in computer speed and how big the backup was, and was called ‘EaseUS Todo Backup’. I have been using it successfully for many years but this time it just didn’t want to play! Although the program completely recovered to the new drive, and the Operating system did try to run (but it failed!). After an hour of checking the start-up log, (yep, it has one for every time that you start your computer), I discovered that the system was still trying to access the IDE systems and, of cause, failing! The reason being that my old drive was old but stable IDE technology and the new one is the stable but much faster, SATA technology. These are completely different technologies and totally incompatible. The system image was created using the old IDE system. Here’s the kicker! EaseUS is designed to allow a previously created image file to be installed onto ‘dissimilar’ hardware. When you tick this box (hidden, almost, at the bottom of
the screen), you should be able to recover the system. I don’t think think the program writer expected someone like me to push the limits of the program quite this far! So, from the proverbial clean slate (now there’s a phrase with historical etymology!) I installed my OS (operating system – just getting lazy now!) which in the case of windows XP took about an hour. The drivers that are need for windows to ‘talk’ to the rest of the computer also took about an hour to find and install. Once this was done came the long and repetitive task of installing the long list of programs that I use on a regular basis. Fortunately I have, over the years, collected and maintained a library of programs that I have found useful and that I use regularly. Being in one place made the task of installing them easy if hugely repetitive (I must write a program to automate this process)! This took a full working day to replace the programs that I regularly use! So the moral of this story? Well, in truth, there isn’t one! What you have before you is an outline of what to do, and the order in which to do it, should anything ever happen to your system that forces you to do an emergency recover. Next week I will offer (as this is all I can do) a way of setting up your windows (unless you have discovered the long list of benefits, and short list of problems, of Linux, in which case there is nothing that I can suggest to make your system any better!), that will increase you chance of recovery and generally make your windows system better, but until then I wish you a lovely week and look forward to seeing some of you in the neer future. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! Maybe make a suggestion using the email address under this article for further article that will be useful to you.
For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk
The Game Begins It was 35 degrees outside over the sunny August weekend when I wrote this. For 96 days the bars locally were quiet on weekend afternoons but on Saturday at quarter to two a muffled rumbling started up. At about a quarter past two there was a loud roar and I heard a Welshman cry ‘get in!’ Half an hour later and someone shouted out ‘Rooney!’ Yes football is back, the English football season started for most teams a week earlier but that huge behemoth the EPL or English Premier League roared into life at the weekend. The Welsh voice I heard was cheering a Swansea goal, who are based in Wales not England but that’s football for you. Rooney for anyone who has lived in a hermitage the last 15 years is a Man United player who some say resembles Shrek, he scored and briefly equalised. The rumbling I heard was the voices of tens of thousands of fans at the ground transmitted by
Shame about the name!
Would you be drawn to a film called “The Stillness In The Water”? No, me neither. Just as well then that they changed the title to “Jaws”. Yep, that works! It’s true though, names of films, products or people are important to all of us-and sometimes they can put you off. For example, although I don’t eat them myself, the sweets Gummy Bears were originally called Rubber Bears. Now I don’t know about you but nothing would persuade me that it was worth parting with any amount of money for something called Rubber Bears. Hardly sounds appetising does it? Not that the Gummy Bears are particularly appetising now, but at least it sounds better-but only just. Then there are the really good names that nobody actually appreciates. OMO for instance, the detergent that is now called Surf, is an acronym for on Mondays only! Clever as it was the early days of washing machines. Far better than Tide! No end of times there’s been a queue at my local supermarket with people waiting for the Tide to come in! But names are definitely important for us. Those of us who are parents spend no end of time trying to come up with a name that suits everybody and in the end, more often than not, the poor child dislikes it anyway. For example, I had a friend who was called vw. I always thought they were his initials but he told me that his dad had gone to do the birth certificate and had misunderstood his mum when she insisted that they name their son after a Beatle. Silly billy don’t you think. That’s not quite what his mum said! He eventually changed his name…to Ford! Back to films. It’s fascinating when you take a look at some of the truly awful film titles that the film makers have come up with and you wonder if they really were on this planet when they all agreed it would be a fab name to go with. Really, who would willingly spend their time and money on a film called “Santa Claus Conquers The Martians”? I can tell that there are a few narrowed eyes right now, assuming I’ve made that up. Honestly, I didn’t! Anyway, I must go and pick up our daughter,Tinky Winky from school. I just don’t understand people who give their kids silly names-nor does my wife, Dipsy! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. satellite all the way from Manchester to roar out of televisions way down south here in Andalucía. I didn’t hear the man shout Rooney’s name out again nor any other of his teams names. Way back when in August 1972 classic records such as Schools Out by Alice Cooper and Puppy Love by Donny Osmond were in the UK Pop Charts; it was also the last time Man Utd lost their opening day home fixture. 42 years later and at his first attempt, Van Gaal their new manager broke his first record for the club. On a roll he was as his second record was allowing Swansea to win at Old Trafford for the first time ever in their history. At the same time, the much maligned David Moyes was sitting at home enjoying his huge redundancy cheque whilst chuckling to himself and pointing at the telly saying ‘I told you most of the players are useless!’ This summer the interminable wait
could have been enlivened by the three weeks of the World Cup; but with England depressingly scoring just two goals in three matches their two solitary points had them cemented firmly to the bottom of Group D. They were soon leaving on a jet plane before the party properly started. Out of 32 teams, England’s 26th place gave the FA and Woy Hodgson the confidence to carry on together until the next summer of fun in 2016 and the European Championships. To compound England fans misery, Germany won the World Cup. Being a Liverpool supporter, Man Utd’s woes are nice to write about but this being football anything can happen. So before I pressed the ‘send’ button I thought it best I waited for the rest of the weekend’s games. It was squeaky bum time on Sunday watching Liverpool narrowly beat Southampton as the Saints really piled on the pressure.
Raheem Sterling scored the first for Liverpool. He’s the poor 19 year old Scouse lad scraping by on a miserly £30,000 a week which his boss Rodgers says is more than enough for now to make him a rich young man. Daniel Sturridge scored the second goal to give Liverpool victory. It was his 36th goal in 50 games making him our most prolific scorer in over 100 years. Previously playing for Man City, Bolton and Chelsea, his 140 games over seven seasons had bagged him 38 goals. No wonder Lord Fergie was of the opinion it was a huge gamble buying him two years ago. Manchester City showed class by absorbing all the unlucky Newcastle threw at them and won, as I press send Chelsea are yet to play Premiership newcomers Burnley.

POWER OF ATTORNEY
Question: My parents are in very bad health and are thinking of moving back to the u.k. I understand that they could sign an authorization to me for me to deal with the sale of their property when a purchaser has been found. If this is the case what do we need to do? Answer: Yes, it is perfectly possible for your parents to issue you with a power of attorney to deal with the sale of the property. To achieve this you would normally go to a solicitor, who will organize the signing at the notary of the necessary document. Your parents would need to assist at the notary with their passports and a translator (which would normally be organized by the solicitor). The solicitor will send the instructions (minuta) to the notary with the faculties that need to be included. Please note that the power of attorney cannot be used after the person that granted it has deceased. If your parents had already moved back to the u.k. then the solution would be a dual column , dual language power of attorney prepared by a Spanish solicitor in Spain that your parents could sign in front of a notary in the u.k. Before the document is valid in Spain it would need to have the Hague´s Apostille attached to it. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Rejuvenating Your Home ...In Celebration Of The Hot Summer Months Summer is naturally the season for bright colours; it is most certainly the season of long days followed by hot nights
Honour the spirit of summer living in the decor of your home by taking advantage of the array of summer decorating styles available in home improvement stores. Sunflowers are often associated with sunshine and summertime, and are therefore excellent accessories for summer decorating. Their characteristic bright yellow color will enliven any room in the house. Due to their popularity in the past few years, artificial sunflowers are usually available in silk, so you can have them beautifying your home for years if that is what you desire. Placing baskets of sunflowers throughout the home will make a beautiful sight in the summer. You can also repurpose the baskets according the season or occasion by changing the liners or adding ribbons to the outside. Baskets are not just decorative; they can also be functional and very versatile. Some people use them to store hand towels and wash cloths in the bathroom, but baskets can be used in just about any room in the house. You can use them to hold kitchen utensils, sort bills, and organize anything else you need to declutter in a visually appealing way. Use your creativity to paint new and fresh summer designs on some old wooden table or chairs. Maybe a watermelon or some apples would brighten up an otherwise boring piece of furniture or try painting on some sunflowers for an inexpensive alternative to buying all new pieces! If you would like to make your summer theme a little different and unique in your home, try a Moroccan theme - ideal here in Spain where we are so close to the place itself! Mosaics, candle holders and wall sconces together with a few fluffy pillows made of colourful fabrics would add the feel of Morocco without
costing too much. In addition, glowing candles and artificial lighting together with incense burning in the background would enrich the mood during the evenings. Turn your attention to your outdoor living area as well as the inside of your home. su f f icient . No longer are a few plastic chairs considered to be You’ll find a variety of attractive weatherproof outdoor furniture that will turn your patio, deck, or yard into another room of your home during the summer months. Summertime is a time of ideas and a great time to do home projects. Let your imagination run wild and see what kind of changes you can incorporate into your home.

The usufruct is the right of enjoyment, enabling a holder to derive profit or benefit from a property that either is titled to another person or which is held in common ownership, with the obligation to keep it and care for it as if it was their own. The value of this life-long usufruct is 70% of the house value when you are under 20 years old and looses 1% of the house value per year from the time you reach 20 years of age, with a minimum value of 10% of the price of the property. The best way to calculate the value of the usufruct is as follows: Usufruct = 89 - your age. Bearing in mind that the maximum value of the life-long usufruct is 70% and the minimum value is 10%. Example 1: Value of a life-long usufruct in the case of a beneficial owner (usufructuary) of 32 years of age on a property valued at 150.000 €. U = 89-32 = 57% 150.000 € x 57% = 85.500 € Example 2: Value of a life-long usufruct in the case of a beneficial owner (usufructuary) of 82 years of age on a property valued at 150.000 €. U = 89-82 = 7% 150.000 € x 10% (minimum limit of the usufruct value) = 15.000 € Example 3: Value of a life-long
usufruct in the case of a beneficial owner (usufructuary) of 18 years of age on a property valued at 150.000 €. U = 89-18 = 71% 150.000 € x 70% (maximum limit of the usufruct value) = 105.000 € SIMULTANEOUS AND SUCCESSIVE USUFRUCT: If two people hold the usufruct on a property, the value will be calculated on the age of the youngest of them. Example: A married couple of 70 and 73 years of age who give to their children their property valued at 150.000 €, withholding the life-long usufruct until the last spouse’s death. U = 89 - 70 (age of the youngest spouse) = 19% 150.000 € x 19% = 28.500 € BARE OWNERSHIP (NUDA PROPIEDAD): The value of the “bare ownership” (ownership of the property without the usufruct) will be the difference between the total value of the property and the value of the usufruct. FO (full ownership) = BO (bare ownership) + U (usufruct) BO (bare ownership) = FO (full ownership) - U (usufruct) Source: www.4wayconnections.webs. com
Macclesfield couple have realised their dream of buying a holiday home in Spain, thanks to the information and confidence they received from free online resource SpainBuyingGuide. com. Barry and Natalie Kimber began the process of buying property in Spain after browsing SpainBuyingGuide.com and reading their free guides. They secured the property during a viewing trip to the Canary Island in April, and completed on their one-bedroom apartment in Lanzarote in June 2014. “SpainBuyingGuide.com was the springboard we needed to put our buying plans into action,” said Barry. “Before discovering the site I went two months not knowing where to start, but within a week of coming across it, we had booked flights and things began to happen. And not only did I download their free Buying Guide, but I’ve found their special guide to viewing trips and regular enewsletters useful too.” During their viewing trip in April, the Kimbers saw around 10 properties, having contacted various agents in Lanzarote in advance. “I told Natalie we should treat the visit as a business trip and not a holiday!” said Barry. “We knew we wanted our place the moment we saw it, so put down a €1,000 reservation fee. Before flying
back to the UK, we also opened a bank account, got our NIE number and found a local lawyer.” The Kimbers agreed on a purchase price of €85,000 for their property, but with fees and taxes, the total cost of their apartment in Puerto del Carmen was around €98,000. The property, which is the couple’s holiday home for personal use only, was refurbished around five months before they bought it, and came fully furnished. Through the SpainBuyingGuide. com, the Kimbers also discovered a way to save money when they came to pay for their apartment. “We used currency specialist Smart Currency Exchange to exchange Sterling to euros and transfer around €62,500 to Lanzarote.” They found that Smart Currency Exchange’s exchange rates were consistently 2-4 per cent better than those offered by high street banks. Concluded Barry: “Our apartment is perfect for us – on a complex with a communal pool and 200 metres from the beach. We’ve bought as part of our pension as much as for lifestyle reasons, so I hope to see some appreciation over time.” SOURCE www.smartcurrencyexchange.com

SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014
7 great ways to recycle and de-clutter
It’s time to revisit, revamp and re-house those long-forgotten clothes that have been lurking behind closed doors. But once you’ve decided what’s got to go, what’s the best way to pass it on? And could it make you some money? Here are 10 ways to spring-clean your wardrobe Wardrobe overhaul A successful wardrobe overhaul ideally requires some forward planning - but all you need to get started is a spare hour and plenty of hangers! Get everything out on the bed. Re-hang anything you’ve worn within the past three months, with the hook of the hanger facing outwards. Put everything else you’re undecided about on hangers facing inwards. Each time you wear an item, put it back in the wardrobe with the hanger facing outwards. After a certain period of time - say,
another couple of months - take another look at the items that still remain unworn. Unless they’re specific seasonal or special occasion clothes, it’s time to face facts. You’re just not that into them - or possibly can’t fit into them - any more! Get swishing ‘Swishing’ is basically just a fancy name for holding a clothes-swapping party with friends or colleagues. You take free stuff they don’t want from their wardrobes. They take free stuff you don’t want from yours - keep things simple and just ‘swish’ among friends or arrange an event in your local area!
Assuming some of your fellow ‘swishers’ share similar fashion tastes and body shapes to you, there’s little reason not to try it. Perhaps the only caveat is that rather than clearing space in your wardrobe, you could simply be replacing some of last season’s styles with more of last season’s styles. Our top tip? Look for lasting classics, not trends! Take clothes to the charity shop Your unwanted clothes could make a big difference to someone’s life. For example, just five bags’ worth can fund a Cancer Research UK information nurse’s vital work for one day! If you want your clothes to go to a good cause and aren’t concerned about making any money from them, there’s no reason not to donate to charity. Remember, it will help the charity further if you wash your donations - and do any minor repairs - first. Try a dress agency As the recession bites, there are more and more dress agencies for ‘pre-loved’ clothes popping up. These are normally run by clued-up fashion-lovers, who will take in your unwanted quality clothing on a sale-orreturn basis for a set period. You pay a fee - usually a percentage of the sale price - for their services. Most discerning dress agencies have a strict acceptance policy and will only take in pristine items they think will look good in the shop and sell well. So you’re unlikely to be able to offload all your unwanted clothes in this way. Also, there’s no guarantee that everything will sell - so you could end up taking at least some of your items home again in a few months’ time. Mix, match and upcycle Upcycling is a way of tweaking your unwanted items to regain use of them!

LOS GALLARDOS - €99.995
SANTOPETAR - €114.995
For example, your favourite pleat-front trousers could easily become this season’s hottest cigarette pant with a bit of hemming web and imagination. Or try revamping a cashmere cardigan by changing the buttons to reflect some of this season’s trends. Jewelled collars are set to dominate - so if you have a jumper that’s looking a bit dull, take a trip to your local haberdashery for some on-trend embellishments.’ If you can find a new use for something, it’s a win-win situation - so there’s no real reason not to give it a go! Sell via a specialist website There are now several established websites dedicated to buying and selling ‘pre-loved’ luxury clothes and accessories. Women everywhere are getting behind the green philosophy that clothes can be investment pieces that you buy, wear then sell again. Websites such as these are for luxury and designer items only - so this certainly isn’t the place to offload your tatty old jumpers. There’s a strict selection process - for potential sellers, as well as items for sale and each website takes a commission fee. Look again! Just because you haven’t worn something for ages, it doesn’t always mean it’s time to chuck it. Sometimes, items get pushed to the back of the wardrobe because you haven’t seen their potential. Anything that’s black or white can be worn season after season. Beading and embellishment are here to stay for 2013, as are stripes, leather and metallics. Even if an item’s right for this season, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s right for you. Be honest with yourself: if you bought it on a whim without even trying it on, it’s probably time to cut your losses and pass it on.

A 32% jump in sales of mobile devices has helped the world’s biggest maker of PCs grow its quarterly profits. Lenovo, which has intensified efforts to diversify from its traditional personal computer roots, confirmed that earnings rose 23% to $214m (£128m) in the April-June quarter compared to the same period last year. It credited strong growth in sales of smartphones and other mobile devices, which topped $1.6bn (£1bn) over the three months. The profits reflect the China-based firm’s heavy

investment in mobile technology - a strategy that has included the purchase, from Google, of Motorola’s handset business for $2.9bn (£1.74bn). Global revenue rose 18% to $10.4bn (£6.23bn) - with PC sales making up 29% of that total figure. The company said shipments of desktop computers rose 12.1% over a year earlier, compared with an industry average of 2.4% - reflecting a pick-up in demand in its home market. Just over a third of its revenue was made in China while the US and the Americas accounted for $2.2bn (£1.32bn) of sales. Revenues from Europe, the Middle East and Africa rose 27% to $2.8bn (£1.68bn). Lenovo’s chairman, Yang Yuanqing, said he expected mobile sales to be the bulk of its future revenue as its focus shifts from PCs. The company said it rose to number three among global tablet computer suppliers, adding that worldwide smartphone shipments grew about 39% year-on-year.

Magpies ‘don’t steal shiny objects’
Magpies do not steal trinkets and are positively scared of shiny objects, according to new research. The study appears to redeem the myth of the “thieving magpie”, which pervades European folklore. It is widely believed that magpies have a compulsive urge to steal sparkly things for their nests. But Exeter University scientists show that the birds are actually nervous of such objects, presumably because they are novel and may prove dangerous. The study involved a pile of shiny items (metal screws, small foil rings, and a small rectangular piece of aluminium foil), and a pile of the same objects covered with matt blue paint. Researchers placed mounds of edible nuts just 30cm away from each of the collected objects. In 64 tests during feeding, magpies picked up a shiny object only twice - and discarded it immediately. The birds essentially ignored or avoided both shiny and blue objects, and often fed less when they were present. Lead author Dr Toni Shephard said: “We did not find evidence of an unconditional attraction to shiny objects in magpies. Instead, all objects prompted responses indicating neophobia – fear of new things. Dr Toni Shephard on a new study of magpie behaviour “We suggest that humans notice when magpies occasionally pick up shiny objects because they believe the birds find them attractive, while it goes unnoticed when magpies interact with less eye-catching items. It seems likely that the folklore surrounding them is a result of cultural generalisation and anecdotes rather than evidence.” But the research is not conclusive – yet. Due to the nature of the test with fixed feeding stations, the scientists could only assess “married” magpies that inhabit a set territory. Single magpies without a steady partner are less predictable in their feeding habits.

The Railway Man by Eric Lomax. Film Review.
“Sometimes the hating has to stop.” Engraved on Eric Lomax’s tombstone. The film was premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2013 and released in the UK in January 2014. Directed by Jonathan Teplitzky and starring Colin Firth, Nicole Kidman, Jeremy Irvine ( War Horse) and Stellan Skarsgard.
They find parts easily and make a rudimentary radio which allows them to follow the allies’ victories. It doesn’t take the Japanese long to realise what is happening and they discover the radio. The mechanics are treated brutally, including Lomax. Two of them die from their beatings and Lomax is left physically broken as well as mentally traumatised. The men are taken to Outram prison where disease is rife. In the film it is Irvine who is subjected to the waterboarding torture and his screams for mother are disturbing.
The book was published in 1995 and it was a lifelong ambition of Lomax’s to retell some extremely harrowing Takashi Nagase was the Japanese stories of POW beatings and interpreter responsible for Lomax’s torture during the second nightmares. EU compensates fruit and veg growers
The European Commission has announced emergency EU funding of 125m euros (£100m; $170m) for fruit and vegetable growers hit by Russia’s ban on most imported Western food. The funding is compensation for fresh produce which will not be sold. Instead it will be distributed free to schools, hospitals and other institutions. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, grapes and pears are included in the scheme. Russia has banned many food imports, angry at EU-US sanctions over Ukraine. Last week the Commission announced plans to pay peach and nectarine growers for 10% of their crop, and the new funding expands that aid to many more producers. The crops affected are those in full season now, with no storage option for most of them and no immediate alternative market available, a statement from Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos said. “All farmers of the concerned products - whether in producer organisations or not - will be eligible to take up these market support measures where they see fit,” he said. The measures will apply until the end of November. The compensation will come from a special 420m-euro fund set up under the current Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), for farmers facing potentially ruinous emergencies. On 7 August, Russia declared a one-year embargo on meat, fish, dairy products, fruit and vegetables from the EU, the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway in retaliation for Western economic sanctions. EU fruit exports to Russia last year were worth 1.07bn euros (£855m; $1.4bn) the biggest agricultural export sector, ahead of dairy produce and meat. Lithuania, Poland, Finland and Denmark each face losses running into hundreds of millions of euros because of the Russian ban, the Financial Times reports. The food types covered by the new compensation scheme are: tomatoes, carrots, white cabbage, peppers, cauliflowers, cucumbers and gherkins, mushrooms, apples, pears, red berries, table grapes and kiwis.

The Day of the Mischief Imp
Mischief Imps are invisible malevolent spirits; it is they who turn garden rakes teeth side up, cause keys to fall out of your hand into bushes in the pitch dark, and toast to fall butter side down. Crossing your fingers or touching wood is no more effective against them than the latest household product advertised as ‘Guaranteed to remove stubborn stains’ is against stubborn stains. If they put their minds to getting you, you will get got! It started when one of them tripped me up in our driveway. I arose from the stones undamaged but more than a little annoyed, and uttering words which do not appear in
the Ladies Handbook of Useful Phrases in Polite Society. That episode behind me I commenced cleaning the pool. Halfway round I suddenly became aware that the sucky thing that gets pushed along the bottom on the end of the pole felt different. As I gave it my full attention I saw the hose to which it should be attached calmly free itself, and float gently up to the surface. I know what I have to do to clean the pool, but the mechanics of it are beyond me – I simply know that a pump that is designed to pump water is not supposed to pump air, and if it does, there are certain to be dire consequences. I flew to the pumphouse as fast as I could, uttering more words that do not appear in the Ladies Handbook of Useful Phrases in Polite Society, and given emphasis by the fact that I was running barefoot over gravel. I silenced the pump, hollered for the Master josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk
By Jos Biggs
of All Things Mechanical – Pete, who calmly assured me that it would ‘be alright.’ It was, eventually, but it did make a very odd noise for a bit! Returning to the house, I became aware of a disturbance in the Force – cupboards being opened, papers being riffled, and general sounds of frustration filling the air. ‘Do you know where the instruction book for my camera is?’ Pete queried. He was stupid to ask – on a foggy day I have a job finding my feet! For a good 2 hours we searched to no avail - it remained unfound. However, while the Mischief Imp in question was busy laughing up its irritating little sleeve, Pete went on the Web, found the relevant instruction book, and looked up whatever it was that he needed to know! So there, you Imps! Nah, nah, nah-nah nah!
alqueria The Druids of Alqueria
The structures appeared one morning. Loco Paco saw them first while walking his imaginary pet rodent ‘Bert’. He raced back to Alqueria spreading the news of the strange manifestations on the waste ground to east of the Village. No one believed Loco Paco. Not surprisingly as most of the people he knew didn’t actually exist. Among his pronouncements were that he had visited Valhalla and recently seen the Prime Minister of Britain dressed as Shirley Temple dancing with a cardboard cut-out of Margaret Thatcher. The latter did however turn out to be true. Confirmation was soon forthcoming and the Village elders raced to the site. There they were, in a circle stretching erect, pointing heavenwards. They looked for all the world like a modern streamlined version of Stonehenge. The similarity was not lost on the worthies of Alqueria and they summoned the local Druid leader ‘Pendragon the Daft’. This individual, as well as being a loony was the self-styled high priest of the Iberian Druids. He circled the monoliths did a couple of incomprehensible chants and declared the structures genuine. Alqueria had its very own Druid temple. Pendragon immediately started to look for a virgin to sacrifice, needless to say his search was in vain. The columns appeared to be made from some synthetic material, fibreglass was the best bet. Inscribed on each of the thirty uprights was the letter ‘V’. Pendragon the Daft created the cult of ‘V’ Druids and set about forming a commune of like-minded Loonies. Manuela, who had been absent from the Village on some task or other, the details of which should be left heavily veiled, returned and immediately took an interest in the commune. Any group of individuals performing strange and disturbing rights were of keen interest to her. She studied their rituals and
the circle of thirty uprights. Manuela immediately recognised them as phallic symbols, her being an expert in such matters. The structures rose out of the ground like gigantic thingies, well, they brought a tear to Manuel’s eyes. As the purpose of such objects was being discussed a gaggle of be-suited individuals appeared. These gentlemen represented a drug manufacturing company. They needed a suitable place to produce an advertising commercial in privacy. As no-one visited Alqueria on purpose, with it being such an obnoxious place it was perfect. The product in question was a tablet used in the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction. The uprights now had an obvious meaning. Pendragon the Daft and his crowd skulked away in silence. Manuela got a prominent part in the subsequent advertisement. John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

viewpoint
They Don’t Make Tea Bags Like They Used To
We live in a throwaway society. When something goes wrong, breaks down or is over the age of two, we are told with much shaking of heads, tut tutting and expelling of air, that it’s not worth repairing and we would be much better off cutting our losses and purchasing a new whatever it is. Three years ago a computer mechanic or whatever it is they call themselves, was looking at my piece of Compaq equipment . . . behave now . . . trying to trace a fault. He asked me how long I had owned it and when I informed him quite proudly that it was only four years old, he sighed heavily before proclaiming that this was to be expected with such an old machine and the best thing to do was to bin it and re-invest in a new one. Four years – old? I have cheese that’s been in the fridge longer than that! We are told that technology has come a long way and indeed it is self evident with the cornucopia of gadgets and gizmos that are readily available today, but why then we have to ask ourselves, are these items far less reliable than their predecessors. Well of course the answer is - because they are made that way. Whereas refrigerators, televisions, electric irons, kettles et al were built to last in the 60’s and 70’s – as a matter of honour from the manufacturer’s point of view I suspect – the opposite seems to be true today. Faster turnaround, more profits
and stuff reliability. My parents bought their first and only fridge in 1960 – a Zanussi – and that ice box was still chugging along twenty eight years later, after my Mum and Dad had both passed on. A little arthritic admittedly, but it was still doing the job it had been designed for. Not that you would want to keep a smart phone, iPad, lap top or digital camera any longer than twelve months, because the damn things are outdated almost as soon as you buy them. It’s a never ending cycle of bigger/ smaller, smarter, more complex – and here’s the kicker - a good deal more expensive. Automobiles seem to be the only exception to the rule. If you treat your car lovingly – take it out for runs on a regular basis and provide it with its favourite liquid sustenance and a spot of gentle grooming thrown in – it should give you long and faithful service. It’s not only high tech items or electrical goods that have much shorter lives than their ancestors. Clothing is suffering from the same malaise. Like many men (of my age) I would regularly receive Christmas gifts courtesy of the men’s clothing department at M&S. Almost without exception the sweaters and shirts were of such a quality, they would last for years – hell, I still have one wool jumper that must be twenty five years old if it’s a day and I recently gave another – still in pristine condition – to a local charity shop. And now I think of it, there are a couple of Burton’s shirts hanging up in the wardrobe that must be of a similar vintage – a bit grey and wrinkled like me, but nevertheless, motoring on. But today, quality seems to be a badbirdnow@gmail.com word that they even

find difficulty spelling. And the powers that be wonder why the store that once carried the St Michael brand with pride, is doing so badly. And don’t get me started about the underpants. The ones you buy today are a mere shadow of their predecessors. Within a week or so you find them around your knees because the elastic seems to have developed a kind of dementia and forgets to snap back into its original shape. I have several pairs with holes just under the waistband on each hip, punctured by my fingers - the fabric is so flimsy, that just pulling them on causes devastation. That’s why I have taken to going commando during the summer months, albeit with a degree of trepidation that the zipper on my shorts may suddenly develop metal fatigue. Right across the board, technological achievement may have increased, but standards of excellence have dropped commensurately and just this week, the final straw. Our favourite Red Label tea bags that we have brought over from England on a regular basis are not what they were. It’s not that I am tight, but each bag is quite man enough to make two mugs of strong tea and that’s what we have always practised. The problem is that now, the bag itself is such a wuss and cheaply made, any vigorous stirring splits the darn thing and the second mug ends up with tea dregs in the bottom. Is nothing sacred?

SOLTIMES AUGUST 2014
Let us look after your home this summer Planning your decorating Planning sounds boring but it does save time in the long run. It helps you think the job through, make all those difficult decisions about colour-scheming, and get together everything you need before you start work. Budget If you’re going to redecorate a room, begin by deciding how far you’re going to go. Will you just repaint the walls, ceiling and woodwork? Will you be papering the walls for the first time, or do you want to replace the paper you already have? And how about changing the carpet and curtains, even the upholstery and the lighting? These decisions will often depend on the size of your budget. You can probably do a quick room repaint for £50, but add some new wallpaper and you’ll at least double the spend. More extensive changes than this will definitely have you dipping deep into your savings. The choice is yours, of course, but be sure you know what you’re in for before you start.

Start a file Unless you like white rooms, you’ll need paint colour charts, wallpaper and even fabric samples to help you decide which products to use. Buy a cardboard pocket file or a scrapbook from a stationer’s to keep them all in. • Pick up free colour charts from the DIY stores • Ask for samples of unwrapped rolls of wallpaper and borders on display • For fabric samples, try the curtain shops and department stores in your local high street • Local markets can be an excellent source of cheap fabrics • Tear pages out of monthly home magazines for colourscheme ideas • Many magazines have separate stockists lists at the back for all the relevant product details Plan your time Your time is the free ingredient of any project, but you still have to work out how much of it is needed for the job. Don’t underestimate how long things can take. Just preparing a room for redecorating - clearing the furniture, taking everything off the walls, washing down surfaces, patching up any damage, covering up the carpet or stripping it and so on - could take a day at least. Allow a whole weekend for a simple repaint, and two if you’re paper-hanging, tiling or laying new flooring as well. This might sound a lot, but you’ll feel much better if you set yourself a realistic timetable and are able to keep to it as you go along. Get organised Last but not least, make sure you know exactly what you’re up against by reading through the appropriate DIY project in our guide. For example, a bathroom makeover could involve replacing all the old wall tiles (or tiling over them), painting the ceiling and the woodwork and putting down some new cork tiles. You could even fix that annoying dripping tap while you’re at it. By doing this now, you’ll be able to work out what order to do things in and then organise your shopping and work time accordingly. For this particular job, you should do tiling (the messiest bit) first, then painting and finally flooring.

Urcal Golf Society played its latest match on Saturday 16th August at Playa Macenas. Not surprisingly because of the poor state of the course, the scores were not as good as we would normally expect but the result was quite close with the first three teams being separated by just one shot. The format was a two person Texas scramble with eight teams contesting the match. Captain Steve Dodd together with his partner Shirley Marriott scored a

The BMW i8 is ready to revolutionise its vehicle class. As the first sports car with the consumption and emission values of a compact car. The strength of the plug-in hybrid lies, among other factors, in the perfect synchronisation of electric motor and combustion engine, which makes itself apparent in maximum efficiency and dynamics on the road. The first sports car that even accelerates the zeitgeist. Progress in motion: a vehicle that fascinates. With innovative LifeDrive architecture, ground-breaking materials such as carbon, layering design and numerous intelligent BMW EfficientDynamics measures. Discover the BMW i8 in action.
been implemented, and the idea of a sports car for the future was already detectable. Series production of the BMW i8 marks the current peak of the development: a plug-in hybrid with the appearance and the breathtaking performance of a sports car, which at the same time exhibits the consumption and emissions of a compact car. And thus convincingly resolves the apparent contradiction between efficiency and dynamics. Through its overall concept, the BMW i8 embodies the accomplished vision of a modern and sustainable sports car. The highly emotive design instantly shows which qualities the BMW i8 has to offer. Yet is doesn’t rely entirely on
Every great pioneering achievement has its own story. In the case of the BMW i8, it begins in 2008 with the launch of Project i – and with no lesser objective than the reinvention of urban mobility. Just one year later, the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics concept showed what a technology leader geared fully toward energy saving can look like. This was the basis that gave rise to the BMW Concept i8, which demonstrated in near-production-ready form where the development would lead. All available BMW EfficientDynamics technologies were already united within this vehicle, an intelligent lightweight concept had
its sports car character. Its aesthetics also pursue functional aims: more aerodynamics for maximum efficiency. The BMW i8 offers far more than pure athleticism. With its unique drive concept, it essentially reinvents the idea of sporting mobility. This is because the powerful plug-in hybrid system with the combination of BMW eDrive technology and a BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine brings together the benefits of an electric motor and a petrol engine to produce an outstanding driving experience.
