Samaritans in Spain Lynda Bellingham

It is with sadness that we hear that Lynda Bellingham died last night after a long fight with cancer. The press release said she died peacefully in her husband’s arms, and for that we can be grateful. Lynda was given an OBE for her work with charities, and here in Spain she was patron of Samaritans in Spain for several years. She began as Patron almost at the inception of Samaritans in Spain when it began as Costa Blanca Samaritans, remaining till just a few years ago when her work commitments became overwhelming for her and she felt she could no longer give the time she felt she should give them She became Patron of the Samaritans in Spain because, as she said, it offered a listening ear to people who so needed one when they really

needed it. Lynda’s own personal courage was manifest in her determined fight against cancer, dealing with the chemotherapy that was, as she said, so strong her body was protesting. Her personal decision to end the therapy in November and to hopefully have one last Christmas with her family was preempted by her sudden death. But even through all the pain, Lynda took time out to pre-record a farewell appearance on Loose Women where she told the world to grasp everything, to not be afraid and to enjoy all we can from our lives. What a profound message to take into our lives. Lynda had this courage, but for some that courage eludes them and they need support. Some find it in family and friends, others in religion or work, but for a few these are not an option. If you feel in this position it would be a fitting tribute to Lynda and her courage, as well as a courageous thing for you to do for yourself to contact the Samaritans in Spain on 902 88 35 35. They also offer a drop in centre at Punta Marina shopping centre and email support on pat@samaritansinspain.com. Her passing is a sad day, especially for Samaritans in Spain, but her life and courage is an inspiration to us all, and let us take that message forward. Thank you Lynda for all the love, courage and fun that you have bought into all our lives. Source: Terry Crandon

One in eight working Spaniards live in poverty

While Spain struggles with a jobless rate of close to 25 percent, many of the country’s salaried employees are living below the poverty threshold, a new study shows. Some 12.3 percent of Spanish people working legally are

members of the working poor, the study from the Spanish union the CCOO reveals. That’s the third highest rate in the European Union with only workers in Greece (15.1 percent) and Romania (19.1 percent)

faring worse. The number of people in the group in Spain— which includes anyone who earns anyone less than 60 percent of the average salary — has also risen in recent years. For 2009, the percentage of people in Spain earning less than €8,900 ($11,300) for a singleperson household, and €18,600 for a household with two adults and children was 11.7 percent — against an EU mean of 8.4 percent. In 2012, however, it had risen to 12.3 percent while that figure was a mean 9.1 percent in the EU. The figure held steady in 2013 but the authors of the CCOO report pointed out that falling

Spain’s cinemas slash prices for film fiesta

Moviegoers will need to register at the Fiesta Del Cine website to gain access to the discounted seats. A single email address can be used for up to ten people to get accreditation that can be printed or stored on their smartphones. To purchase tickets at the reduced price, the accreditation much be shown together with a form of ID. Tickets can also be purchased through the Fiesta del Cine website. People aged over 60 and under 14 do not need to register to receive discounts during the threeday promotion. During the previous Fiesta del Cine, held in April this year, 1,842,444 people

took advantage of the promotion to enjoy films including Spanish smash hit ‘Ocho Apellidos Vascos’ (Eight Basque Surnames) and the superhero blockbuster ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, according to Spanish daily 20 Minutos. Thanks to the federation’s spring promotion, attendances were 206 per cent higher than during the same three days in 2013. Attractions this autumn include a ‘Sing-Along’ version of Disney’s ‘Frozen’ and the fifth chapter in the Spanish cop spoof, ‘Torrente’. Source: www.thelocal.es

salaries in Spain were responsible for this dip, as falling salaries led to a lower poverty threshold. In 2013, the poverty threshold for single-person households had fallen to €8,100. For households with two adults and two children, it had come down to €17,000. Self-employed people, meanwhile, were in an even more difficult situation with 35.6 percent of people in this group classified as working poor in 2012, against a mean 23 percent in the EU. Spain’s overall poverty rate rose from 20.4 percent to 20.8 percent from 2009 to 2013, but then slipped again to 20.4 percent in 2013, again as a result of a lower poverty threshold, according to the CCOO report. Instructions

Things You’ll Need ° Pumpkin ° Sharp knives ° Large spoon

1. L ay out the newspaper on your workspace and set the pumpkin on top. It is a good idea to use several layers. The newspaper will protect your workspace and make cleanup much easier. 2. C ut a hole in the top of the pumpkin, around the stem, using the knife. When cutting the hole, angle the knife to create a cone shape. This will prevent the top from falling in when you place it back on the pumpkin. Pull on the stem to remove the piece that you cut out. Set this piece aside; it will be the lid for your jack-o’lantern. 3. P ull all of the guts out of the pumpkin using your hands and the spoon. Use the spoon to scrape around the inside walls of the pumpkin. Be very sure that you get everything out of the inside if you plan on lighting your jack-o’-lantern with a candle. 4. D raw a scary face on the pumpkin using a pencil. You can draw the face of a popular monster or come up with your own terrifying design. If you are drawing your own design, think pointy, slanted eyes and big fangs, and feel free to put your own creative spin on the pumpkin. 5. C ut out the pieces of your pumpkin’s face using a sharp knife. Remove these pieces and discard them. 6. W hen you are finished carving your pumpkin, put a lighted candle inside and replace the lid. Benefits of Pumpkin seeds Crunchy, delicious pumpkin seeds are high in calories, about 559 calories per 100 g. In addition; they are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and numerous health promoting antioxidants.

Their high calorific value mainly comes from protein and fats. Nonetheless, the kernels are especially rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) like oleic acid (18:1) that helps lower bad LDL cholesterol and increases good HDL cholesterol in the blood. Research studies suggest that Mediterranean diet, which is liberal in monounsaturated fatty acids help to prevent coronary artery disease and strokes by favoring healthy blood lipid profile. Pumpkin seeds hold good-quality protein. 100 g seeds provide 30 g or 54% of recommended daily allowance of protein. In addition, the seeds are an excellent source of amino acid tryptophan and glutamate. Tryptophan is converted into serotonin and niacin. Serotonin is a beneficial neuro-chemical often labeled as nature’s sleeping pill. Further, tryptophan is the precursor of B-complex vitamin, niacin (60 mg of tryptophan = 1 mg niacin).

Pumpkin kernels are also an excellent source of B-complex group of vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine) and folates. These vitamins work as cofactors for various enzymes during cellular substrate metabolism in the human body. In addition, niacin helps in the reduction of LDL-cholesterol levels in the blood. SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2014

A New Sense Of Hope?

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Over the past 12 months I have seen many people who have had problems with their computers not because of a virus or malware but because of ignorance. Before anyone gets upperty with me, please look up the word ‘Ignorance’ and you will see something along the lines of: ‘Ignorance is a state of being uninformed (lack of knowledge)’! Today, and for the next several months we will be working at this ‘lack of knowledge, from the ground up. Computers, What are they? In their simplest form they are nothing more than a glorified adding machine. They can’t even do a simple subtraction! Add on a display to see what is happening, a keyboard, and more recently a mouse, to better interact with this adding machine and you have the basics of a computer. Whether it is a 30 shilling re-conditioned box or a £30,000 all singing, dancing and coffee making wonder, they all need plugging in! The number of times I have had the phone call “My computer is dead – it just won’t work at all” and all it needed was plugging back in after the office cleaner had unplugged it to used their vacuum! Now assuming that you have plugged in your webbook, laptop, desktop, tower, or HAL (IBM just moved back 1 letter), connected your monitor, keyboard and mouse to your box, or just lifted the lid of your laptop, you are ready for the next great adventure. “THE BUTTON”! The button is the on / off switch that every computer has and everyone needs to push. Fact! Pushing the button when it is running doesn’t cause the computer to break! A quick push will probably give you a message that the computer is shutting down and you will have to wait. Windows (all versions) is really good at preventing any damage to itself, as is most other Operating Systems. When you first push

the button it might take a while to start up – this is normal because it has a battery of tests that the computer does before it will even start to load the Operating System (From now on I will shorten that to OS). This is known as POST or Power On Self Test (didn’t say it was smart!) which simply checks that you have a keyboard attached, that the memory chips are still there and all the other bits are working properly. Most Desktop and Tower computers have a second button that doesn’t seem to do much. When you computer is up and running press this other button and watch your computer have a panic attack and die! This is the reset button and is very rarely used and will do exactly what it says on the tin – RESET! This is from the days when computers sometimes froze and I do mean completely and even the ‘friendly’ turn on/off button didn’t work. The rest button simply momentarily interrupts the flow of electric and the computer just stops! Release the button and up it comes again, back into life! I have said in many articles over the passed two and a half years that I’ve been writing and advising you, the readers, that you will have to work much harder to damage your computer, I recommend a ‘Wakefield Wildcats’ Drop-kick across the living room with everything you have got, if you really want to damage it, otherwise, anything less is pretty much unlikely to damage it! Finally you might have to look for a DVD drive, but it’s pretty standard equipment on every computer – for now! The how and why to use this will be covered in a later piece. During this first piece you have cover connecting to the power, You know that it is almost impossible to damage, short of severe physical damage and know what most of the bits facing you, do! Next time we will journey onto the rear of the tower / desktop and everywhere else on a laptop. See you all then. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!

For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

‘War, good Lord, huh . . . what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.’ So sang Edwin Starr in 1970. The song reached number one in the US charts and was a top five hit in the UK. Frankie Goes to Hollywood covered the song in 1980 and their version was equally successful. If you know the song, keep it in the back of your mind as you read this. The past week has been a poignant one where war is concerned. Who can forget the moving TV pictures of the ceremonies carried out at a War Graves Commission Cemetery in France, where 14 unknown WW1 British soldiers were finally laid to rest, alongside comrades who died all those years ago. It was part of the one hundred year memorial tributes which will culminate in two weeks time, at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. ‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.’ (Hum the song) A recent poll suggests the commemoration of the First World War has increased the public’s knowledge of the conflict and brought people in Britain together. It also suggests that the centenary, marking the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, has also led to increased interest in researching family histories. The last veterans died some years ago and yet every new generation is unavoidably aware of the conflict which was, we were told, ‘to end all wars.’ The slaughter of young conscripts was unparalleled in any warfare, past or present; millions lost their lives. (Hum the song) Another ceremony took place as well last week, somewhat further away from home. Britain’s war in Afghanistan came to an end on Sunday, after a 13 year conflict which has cost billions of pounds and hundreds of lives. In an historic moment in the Afghan desert, Britain lowered its flag at Camp Bastion in an end of operations ceremony, signifying the finish of the longest military campaign in modern times. But what has it achieved? (Hum the song) Those few hundred British troops remaining at the camp will begin to make their way home in the next few days after handing over to the Afghan forces. Many observers believe the Afghan National Forces will be unable to prevent Camp Bastion and the Helmand province from returning to the control of the Taliban. Military chiefs said the British campaign in the country had given a ‘new sense of hope’ to the Afghan people and made the streets the UK safer from terrorist threats. Many people – me included - fail to understand the logic of that comment. (Hum the song) So what have we, as a nation gained from these two very different kinds of warfare? A hundred years ago the world was a different place. Armies fought set piece battles, committing thousands of troops in terrifying face to face actions where thousands died. Many would ask, for what? Today, the war is fought against torrorists, small in number and devious of task. They set roadside bombs to kill and maim, but never confront their enemy in open warfare: the rules of engagement have changed, but our troops still die. (Still humming?) A hundred years on, many would ask, War, good God, huh . . . what is it good for? By Paul Martin

What’s on in Spain: November 2014

November in Spain is bursting at the seams for lovers of art, culture, food and sport. Arts Primavera Club 2014, October 31st–November 2nd, Barcelona: Big names in club music come together to crank out tunes that will keep you dancing all night (and all day as well if you want). Best of all, a ticket to the whole event will only set you back €25 ($32). Madrid en Danza, November 6th– November 30th: Dance companies from 23 countries descend on the Spanish capital to offer styles from ballet to urban to flamenco and everything else in between. Not to be missed. Cartegena Jazz Festival, November 1st–November 22nd: Beautiful Cartegena is in November hosting big names including Macy Gray, Branford Marsalis and Cat Power. Seville European Film Festival, November 7th–November 15th: This popular event showcases the best of European cinema in a public-friendly format. On offer are features, documentaries and short films. This year Austrian cinema will come

under the spotlight while the festival will also see the Spanish debut of UK director Mike Leigh’s film Mr Turner. Opera: Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Seville, November 21st–November 29th: Don’t miss the chance to see Mozart’s opera at Seville’s glorious Maestranza Theatre. Barcelona, Zona Neutral, Fundación Miro, Barcelona, October 25th 2014–February 15th 2015: During the First World War, Barcelona was a hot bed of culture as artists escaped the conflict in Europe by heading to the city. This exhibition about a unique era features films, photography, advertising materials and much more. Zinebi documentary and short film festival, Bilbao, November 14th– November 21st. A highly-rated festival featuring documentaries and short films from around the world. Culture Tosantos, Cádiz, October 31st/ November 1st: November 1st is a national holiday in Spain to mark All Saints Day, when families traditionally visit the graves of their ancestors and honour their memory.

However, many places like to start off the mourning process with a bit of a party and Cádiz leads the way when it comes to Halloween night japery. The Andalusian city celebrates Tosantos by focusing on its local food produce on the eve of All Saints Day, with locals typically dressing up as rabbits, pigs and chickens lurking around the city’s main markets. Fruit and vegetables are often used to satirize social realities and politicians and other public figures from Cádiz, Spain, the sensationalist media or the world are put together in an edible and humorous manner. Food Valladolid National Tapas and Pinchos Competition, November 3rd–November 5th: Watch on as some of Spain’s best chefs battle it out to take home the prize for the best tapas and pinchos in the country. Gourmet Tapas Competition, Córdoba, 14th to 23rd November: This two-pronged festival is dedicated to food from Córdoba and from Latin America — appropriate as the city has been named

as Gourmet Capital of Latin-American culinary culture for 2014. This year 39 establishments are taking part, and there are 73 tapas on offer. Sport Real Madrid versus Liverpool, November 4th: Ten-time European champions Real Madrid take on five-time winners Liverpool at the Spanish capital’s iconic Santiago Bernabéu stadium. Real Madrid, the current holders of the title could be without Welsh star Gareth Bale while Liverpool have this season failed to reach the heights that saw them come second in the English Premiere League 2013–2014. Madrid Horse Week, November 26th–November 30th: Madrid Horse Week is Spain’s major horse riding event: a multidisciplinary affair where spectators can do everything from ride ponies to watch the prestigious Madrid leg of the Show Jumping World Cup. Stars at the event include Hugo Simon, John Whitaker, Rodrigo Pessoa and Ludger Berbaum. Thelocal.es

Important: Everyone must take a look at their will to make sure it complies with directive 650/2012. If you live in Spain and do not do this your estate will not go to your spouse if you have children.

Directive issued by the European Parliament 650/2012. This directive approved in 2012 establishes that from 17th of August of 2015 onwards if your will does not expressly say that you wish English law to rule your inheritance it will be governed by the law of the last residence of the deceased.(This can result to be a disaster as Spanish people can only leave 1/3 to spouse and the other 2/3 has to go to the children even on the first step). Who is affected in practice ?: Anyone living in Spain who has children and wishes to (as is normal in the u.k.) leave his assets to his spouse . Action to be taken ?: Have a look at your will and make sure you have declared on it that you wish English law to rule your inheritance.(it is highly likely that you have not ). Have it amended immediately. Not doing so will result in your children receiving 2/3 of your estate instead of your spouse . This is extremely important which is why the directive was

approved in 2012 but does not come into force until the 17th of August of 2015 to allow people to revise their wills. Ignoring this information could have disastrous consequences. Even if you are non resident of Spain we recommend making sure you state in your will that you wish English law to rule your inheritance as otherwise their could be dispute over last residence domicile which could cause a lot of problems. If you have doubt come and see us. If your will does not need changing we will not charge you. If it needs changing we will charge half our normal fee . Michael Davies. Abogado. It’s not only homeowners in the UK who are enjoying an unexpectedly prolonged period of low interest rates – mortgages in the Eurozone remain at historic lows with signs that foreign banks are op e ning up more to lending to foreign buyers in 2014.

“In Spain, for example, banks realise that foreigners are vital to the revival of the property market in certain areas of the country and are willingly offering up to 75 per cent loan to value mortgages to qualifying applicants,” said Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of the Overseas Guides Company, publishers of SpainBuyingGuide.com and FranceBuyingGuide.com. “In France, up to 80 per cent LTV is possible too.” “Right now, rates in Spain for a lower value mortgage are typically between

3 to 3.5 per cent, pegged to the Euribor rate and updated annually – higher LTV purchases will get even better rates, as low as 2 per cent. And in France, fixed rates start at around just 3 per cent, making it a cheap time to buy there.

“Using a b r o ke r, rather than going direct to a foreign bank, often will save buyers money as well as time and stress. Not only will a good, English-speaking broker guide clients through the application process, they will also have good relationships with certain banks and frequently be able to offer foreign clients better deals than if they went direct to the lending bank. “Buyers should also consider how they will service a foreign mortgage, and if using sterling-based income to service it, speaking to specialist currency firm to avoid financial losses here is highly advisable.” www.smartcurrencyexchange.com

Menorca vs Mallorca Both Mallorca and Menorca have some fantastic properties available – everything from high end apartments overlooking the beach to sprawling villas tucked away in the hills. Prices can vary greatly between the islands though. Kyero’s October 2014 Price Index has shown that average prices on Menorca are just 77% of those on Mallorca, making it an excellent choice for property purchasers looking to pick up a bargain home in the sunshine. Just 20 miles of travelling means savings of more than 20%. The figures come in light of the news that housing across Spain costs 41.8% less than in 2007, according to the Tinsa IMIE house price index. For many second home buyers, there has never been a better time to look to the Balearics. In fact, property sales across the whole of Spain have picked up of late, with data from the National Statistics Institute showing a 10.7% increase in sales during July, when compared with July 2013.

The 28,583 transactions from July represent the fifth successive month of increases in sales, pointing to the beginnings of a sustained picking up of the market. Second hand sales are largely behind the positive growth, as Kyero’s Martin Dell observes, We’ve seen a significant surge in the number of second hand sales over the last several months, which is driving forward the current positive movement in the housing market. Many buyers – both domestic buyers and those from overseas – have been attracted by the price falls that Spain has experienced over the past seven or so years. Spain has always been a popular country with holidaymakers and a significant proportion of them see owning a property there as an investment for their retirement or for their children. There has been a definite upturn in the second hand holiday home market of late, as well as the domestic, fulltime home market. Source: http://news.kyero.com/ Mojacar Playa

she headed the US delegation at the Cannes Film Festival. A photo session together and then private correspondence and inevitably a marriage proposal followed shortly afterwards with a highprofile wedding-in fact two ceremonies, a civil one on 18th April 1956 followed on the 19th with a church ceremony. The film shows the footage of this fairytale wedding between a Hollywood movie star and her Prince. Nicole Kidman was chosen from a number of possible contenders to play Grace and received mixed reviews whereas Tim Roth who played Rainier IIIrd received bad reviews. There’s nothing wrong with the acting and the film allows you to experience the glamour and the wealth with panoramic views. “At some point every fairytale must end. It’s not real love. Real love is obligation.” The plot is deliberately simple showing the 60s as a time when Grace’s marriage had reached crisis point. Naively she had expected everyone to fall hopelessly in love with her and welcomed as the Princess with open arms. Local residents and government ministers were sceptical about Hollywood stars and constantly the media picks up on comments such as “She’ll never be one of us.” Rainier lacks affection and becomes heavily involved in politics especially with the crisis that hits

Monaco. Charles de Gaulle has demanded taxation from his protectorate, threatening to invade. He places an embargo and his warships surround its shores. Nice airport is cut off. The Story of the Christmas Cake

The Christmas Cake

The Christmas Cake as we know it today comes from two customs which became one around 1870 in Victorian England. Originally there was a porridge, the origins of which go back to the beginnings of Christianity. Then there was a fine cake made with the finest milled wheatflour, this was baked only in the Great Houses, as not many people had ovens back in the 14th century.

PLUM PORRIDGE

Originally people used to eat a sort of porridge on Christmas Eve. It was a dish to line the stomach after a day’s fasting, which people used to observe for Christmas Eve, or the ‘Vigil’ as it was called long ago. Gradually, they began to put spices, dried fruits, honey etc in the porridge to make it a special dish for Christmas. Much later it was turned into a pudding, because it got to be so stiff with all the fruits and things, that they would tie it in a cloth, and dunk it into a large cauldron of boiling water and boil it for many hours. This turned into Christmas Pudding.

PLUMCAKE

Later, around the 16th century, it became popular to add butter, replace the oatmeal with wheatflour, add eggs to hold it together better. This became boiled plumcake. So boiled plum pudding and boiled fruitcake existed side by side depending on which ingredients the housewife used. Only big houseS had proper ovens to bake in. In the castles and fine homes, people would make a special cake for Easter, which was a rich fruitcake recipe with a topping of what we now call marzipan or almond paste. A similar cake was baked for the Christmas festivities, but whereas the Easter one was a plain cake with almonds, the Christmas one had dried fruits in season and spices. These represented the exotic spices of the East, and the gifts of the Wise Men . Such things were first brought to Europe and Britain particularly, by the Crusaders coming back from

the wars in the Holy Land in the 12th century.

TWELFTH NIGHT CAKE

But it was not a Christmas cake, but a Twelfth Night Cake. Twelfth night is on the 5th January, and has been for centuries the traditional last day of the Christmas season.. It was a time for having a great feast, and the cake was an essential part of the festivities. This was slightly different in different countries, and also at different social levels

Ingredients

Prep Time: 1 hour Cook Time: 4 hours, 30 minutes Total Time: 5 hours, 30 minutes Ingredients: 1lb 2oz/525g currants 8oz/ 225g golden raisins/sultanas* 8oz / 225g raisins 4oz / 110g mixed candied peel, finely chopped 6oz / 165 glace cherries, halved 10oz/ 300g all purpose or plain flour Pinch salt ½ level tsp mixed spice ** ½ level tsp ground cinnamon ½ level tsp freshly ground nutmeg 2½ sticks / 300g butter, slightly softened 10 oz / 300g soft brown sugar Zest of ½ lemon

method

6 large eggs, lightly beaten 3 tbsp brandy, plus extra for feeding Heat the oven to 300°F/150°C/Gas 2 The temperature is low as the cake needs a long slow bake. It is packed with sugars, fruits and brandy and if the temperature is any higher the

outside of the cake will burn and the inside be undercooked. Line a 9 inch cake tin with 2 thicknesses of parchment or greaseproof paper. Tie a double band of brown or newspaper paper around the outside. This acts as an insulator and to prevent the cake from burning on the outside read more about why here. In a large roomy baking bowl mix the currants, sultanas, raisins, peel and cherries with the flour, salt and spices. In another large bowl cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the lemon zest. Add the beaten egg to the butter mixture a little bit at a time, beating well after each addition - do not try to rush this process as the mixture could curdle. If it does curdle simply add a tbsp of flour and mix again, this should bring the mixture back together. If it doesn’t come back together, don’t fret, the cake will still be delicious. Carefully fold in half the flour and fruit into the egg and butter mixture, once incorporated repeat with the remaining flour and fruit. Finally

add the brandy. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared cake tin making sure there are no air pockets. Once filled smooth the surface with the back of s spoon and make a slight dip in the center (this will rise back up again during cooking and create a smooth surface for icing the cake). Finally, using a piece of paper towel clean up any smears of cake batter on the greaseproof wrapping, if left on they will burn, and though it won’t affect the cake, it doesn’t smell too good. Stand the tin on a double layer of newspaper in the lower part of the oven, if you have a gas oven ensure the paper is well away from the any flame, and bake for 4½ hours. If the cake is browning too rapidly, cover the tin with a double layer of greaseproof or parchment paper after 2½ hours. During the cooking time avoid opening the oven door too often as this may cause the cake to collapse. After 4½ hours check the cake is cooked. The cake should be nicely risen and a deep brown all over. Insert a skewer or fine knife into the centre of the cake. If there is sticky dough on the skewer when you pull it out it needs cooking longer, if it is clean, the cake’s done and remove from the oven. Leave the cake to cool in the tin on a wire rack for an hour, then remove from the tin and leave to cool completely. Once cooled prick the surface of the cake with a fine metal skewer and slowly pour over 2 - 3 tbsp brandy. This feeding should be repeated every two weeks up until Christmas. The cake should be stored wrapped in greaseproof or parchment paper in an airtight tin.

Peter Bradshaw was kinder when he referred to it as being wooden. Bad news for screen writer, Arash Amed and director, Olivier Dahan (“La Vie en Rose.”) In fact savaged is closer to the truth. For me and people like me, it makes it that more appealing. The real-life descendants branded the film a farce criticising it for being “overly dramatic” with “historical errors and little depth.” The controversy surrounds the point of whether it is meant to be a biopic film and the obvious answer is no. Hollywood screen goddess, Grace Kelly was born in 1929 and embarked on an acting career during the 50s, achieving stardom with “Mogambo” for which she won a Golden Globe award and an Academy nomination. She worked with Hitchcock and became a favourite with Cary Grant who snubbed Ingrid Bergman, opting for Grace who was bestowed with an abundance of serenity of all things! Grace met Prince Rainier in 1955 when

Make the curry paste: Grind coriander, cumin, peppercorns, and salt with a mortar and pestle, or with the bottom of a heavy skillet. Add remaining ingredients, and grind until a paste forms. (Curry paste can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks or frozen for up to 3 months.) Make the stew: Puree 5 tablespoons curry paste, the spinach, and 1 cup regular coconut milk in a blender until smooth. Reserve remaining curry paste for another use. Audi RS range to go hybrid

Legislation will force future Audi performance cars into using hybrid power

Low-emission legislation changes will force almost all of Audi’s fastest models into hybrid power within a generation, the head of quattro has admitted. Managing director of quattro, Heinz Hollerweger, has said the entire family of Audi RS models will need some level of electric power to get down to the EU’s sub-100g/km CO2 target by 2021. But Hollerweger has confidently said no model in the RS range would struggle to meet the 65mpg target. “I don’t think it will be difficult,” he told Auto Express. “But when we reduce below 100g/km, we have to add some form of electrification. The question is, in which way?” The timing of the Audi model rollouts means that some of the RS models might sneak in a full life cycle before 2020, but others will need to be pre-engineered to accommodate hybrid power in their facelifts. These include the next full generations of the Audi Q5, the Q7, the A3, the A4, the A6, the A7 and the TT. The R8 will continue as a V10. Yet there are more practical financial considerations at play than just adding the cost of hybrid power, with Audi still to give the green light the next RS3 family. Hollerweger has confirmed that the car’s fate will be decided at a board meeting early next month. The Audi RS3 fivedoor Sportback is locked in, but Hollerweger is pushing for a saloon version – based on the well-received S3 – to give the junior RS a toehold in the US and China. Hollerweger is also asking for a (less likely) convertible, to follow in the footsteps of the popular RS5. Any production RS3 will receive a detuned, production version of the absurdly potent 518bhp, five-cylinder turbo engine from the Audi A3 Clubsport quattro concept Audi showed at Worthersee earlier this year. “We tried to expand the five-cylinder power to what is technically possible, but this is a bit too much for series production. A production version would be more than 260kW (349bhp), though.” He also confirmed the production five-cylinder turbo motor

would be pre-engineered to be compatible with hybrid power. “There are no technical reasons why there couldn’t be a five-cylinder hybrid,” he said. Other steps in reducing the environmental footprint of Audi’s top-spec models include changing the next RS4 from a naturally aspirated V8 to a twin-turbo V6, though the next generation RS6 and RS7 will retain V8 power. The biggest questions around Quattro’s powertrain electrification hinge around cost and weight, with Hollerweger implying different types of electric enhancement being considered for different models. “Superconductors could be an interesting alternative for us because the weight is much lower, but the costs are much higher,” he said. More likely is the widespread adoption of electric “turbochargers”, which Audi has demonstrated in the A6 TDI Concept this year. A production version is expected by 2016. “This could be one form of electrification,” he said. “You get high torque at low revs and blow up the mechanical turbo more. It’s a logical development.” Read more: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk

viewpoint

Gremittoot Isolation

The people of Alqueria had been misbehaving again. This time making complete nuisances of themselves across the border and into Spanish territory. The Madrid Government was forced to lodge a formal complaint with the Alquerian administration. The Spanish authorities had taken exception to certain nocturnal activities with which Manuela’s name was linked. There was no hard evidence but the male population of the surrounding area was running scared. The local Priest was exhausted and traumatised from hearing so many exquisitely detailed confessions. The public lavadero at Tabernas also had a worrying odour. The total apathy with which the complaint was dealt led to the borders being sealed. Alqueria became isolated once more from the outside world. Remitroot had been the saviour of the Pueblo on previous occasions. The isolation of Alqueria meant no Remitroot products reaching the world markets. Remitroot Whisky, a favourite tipple of world leaders has in the past led to Alquerian exile being short lived. An industrious Japanese firm, Nipponplonk Inc. had however produced a synthetic Remitroot called Gremittoot. The distilled spirit wasn’t quite as intoxicating and the wine didn’t change the way the imbiber thought nor was it an effective aphrodisiac. It was in fact a poor substitute but one which was tolerated if it meant the disruptive influence of Alqueria was no more. Alqueria had a problem. Without the income from Remitroot the population of the Pueblo was thrown back on its own ingenuity and intelligence. They were fighting a losing battle.

Remitroot had to be got back to the market place albeit a black and clandestine one. The answer was thought to lay in tunnels and tunnelling became a major pastime. The Alquerian genius for stupidity however thwarted all attempts. One tunneller tunnelled out of the Village and promptly back in again, another came out in a Guardia Civil dormitory and a third broke through into the septic tank of Fernando Loosebowelo a local farmer. Several enterprising citizens waterproofed their pockets and tried carrying the precious liquid out in their trousers but it simply leaked through the stitching. When it came in contact with the lower limbs it had an unusual effect. The legs locked and those affected walked as if they suffered from a painful but minor rectal complaint. One unfortunate individual had naval style cross-pockets and the Remitroot liquor came in contact with his genitals. He now sings soprano at La Scala in Milan. The lights burned late in Alqueria. Will the enterprising but not too bright inhabitants save the day? Will they pull the iron from the fire without giving themselves third degree burns? We shall see.

2014 week 5 With no particular theme and a dozen celebrities still left to fight it out, the show was opened this week by Jake Wood and Janette with a Quickstep. I feel that Jake is far more comfortable with the latin rhythms and always looks a little stiff when in ballroom hold he probably finds it rather restrictive with all the do’s and don’ts that are required for this discipline. He displayed a good variety of steps with good kicks and flicks but he needs to remember to point his toes when kicking! However the Quickstep was full of energy and enthusiasm and I awarded him 8 and the judges 31. Next to dance were Sunetra Sarker and Brendan with a Viennese Waltz. This is a difficult dance to perform for any length of time due to the continuous turning and it can make you dizzy, something that Sunetra experienced this week in training. There was great improvement from last weeks show and she took on the role of the dance very well. She was just a little guilty of lifting her shoulders at times and could do with more stretch through the core to open her top line more. I gave her 8 and the judges 30. Following were Scott Mills and Joanne with a Charleston. Bless him! he is a trier and there was a small improvement from last week (even though he should no longer be here!) However, there was no Charleston swivel at all, the lifts looked precarious at best and I feared for Joanne throughout as Scott’s balance leaves a lot to be desired! I gave him a generous 4 and the judges 19. Next to perform was Thom Evans and Iveta with their Cha Cha Cha. Unfortunately, Thom really struggled with the timing of this dance and was dancing the Cha Cha Cha completely out of time. He also needed to pedal his bike more as

he was failing to straighten his knees and at times he looked as if he had lost his horse! For me this wasn’t his best dance and even the hip action appeared forced due to the lack of floor pressure as his weight was being carried too far back. I gave him 6 and the judges 27. Frankie Bridge and Kevin then performed a Foxtrot. This was a smooth performance overall lacking slightly for me in the pressure of either toe or heel into the floor. She was picking her feet off the floor which weakened her overall performance. She also needs to stretch her core up a little more to widen the top line but otherwise a very strong portrayal of the dance. I awarded her 8 and the judges 32. Next to dance was Alison Hammond and Aljaz and a Tango. Alison, like Jake is not comfortable in the Ballroom discipline. She is so flat footed and needs to be able to really use her feet much more in Ballroom. I know she is flat footed but so am I, and I know how much more she could use her feet if she applied herself despite it not being as easy as for other dancers. She did however manage to stay focused throughout the dance and tried to bring the Tango character although there was a lack of the needed staccatto action. I gave her 5 and the judges 23. Next to perform were Mark Wright and Karen and their Samba. I feel that Mark is being handed some absolutely awful music through the series with the Superman theme for a Paso Doble and this week a disco That’s the Way I Like It for Samba. Karen choreographed the dance to fit the music so had too much disco edge for me, that said Mark displayed the party atmosphere

Goodbye Del Hello Henry

We’ve had a very harmonious 8 year relationship with Del, our Renault Clio; He is an abstemious little fellow, sipping his diesel as if it were a rare vintage wine to be savoured, not gulped. He also has an excellent work ethic, is not in the least fazed by BMWs and Mercedes, and will show them all a clean set of wheels up the mountain road. However, he is small, and Pete is finding it increasingly difficult to descend and arise from the depth of his interior. This fact, combined with his 10th birthday and the Government’s Plan Pive, led us to investigate a replacement. Cars, to me, are pretty much cars; plus I am fond of Del. It was down to Pete to do the tedious but essential research needed to find an adequate replacement. Price, dimensions and local availability were the top 3 considerations, after which came a raft of other details, many of which were completely a b o v e my head. H o w e v e r, e ve n t u a l l y we test drove and decided on a Renault Captur, in but josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk bland

practical Ivory, and I must admit I got quite excited. Cars are not like dresses – you can’t try them on, pay at the till and walk out wearing them – all sorts of options have to be decided upon before you can call a car your own. Thus I was slightly taken aback when we got the call that ‘our car was ready.’ My main concern over the new car was the number plate – I have noticed how many cars locally have number plate in which the letters F and K feature, and, no matter how gorgeous, I was not having a car with, for instance FKU for a number. Imagine my relief when I saw our new car was called HZS obviously his name was Henry! If Del were a person he would be wearing an open neck shirt, jeans and deck shoes. Henry, however, is more Harris Tweed and Hunter wellies. Del says Hello, Henry greets you with Good Morning. Del would ask where we were going, Henry would enquire as to our destination. You get into Del, but you enter Henry’s interior. Silently and smoothly we slid away, leaving Del behind on the forecourt. I don’t want to think of his future, but when he reaches the Great Car Park in the Sky he will meet up with several mid last century Land Rovers, a clutch of Minis, a collection of Toyotas and VWs, a Hyundai, a Ford and a brown Austin Allegro with the heart of a Lamborgini, but a lethal understeer!

throughout and his hips were great! The Samba steps in the routine were performed quite well and as a result he gained 8 from me and 33 from the judges. Simon Webb and Kristina were out next with their Viennese Waltz. I found the character of this not quite true as he was ‘skipping’ his side steps. Had he have given a stronger drive on the first step, this would have been flattened out for a far better performance. He also attempted the fleckerl, but not with the correct footwork I’m afraid. His frame was not too bad although he has a tendency to turn his left side away from his partner. I gave him 6 and the judges 28. Judy Murray and Anton then came out to perform Charleston. In an attempt to get into character, Judy had been asked to use her facial expressions more - oh dear! she looked to me like a fish puffing and blowing! She really seemed to enjoy her performance but for me she lacks co-ordination, something I find hard to believe as a tennis coach. Her timing was also suspect throughout and as a result I gave her 4 and the judges 18. Next to dance was Caroline Flack and Pasha with a Paso Doble. Again I wasn’t keen on the music - Live and Let Die from James Bond. Call me an old traditionalist! That said, her performance was very strong and powerful, theatrical and with superb flamenco hand movements and lines. I awarded her 9 and the judges 34. Steve Backshall and Ola then came out to dance their Waltz. For the first time this season it was nice to see Ballroom performed in a tail suit! Steve is greatly improved and his frame was quite good overall. He gave a nice smooth

romantic performance of the Waltz, but I would also like to see him stretch up in his core more, it would make him lighter on his feet and as a result would make his pivot turns look much lighter and easier. I gave him 7 and the judges 30. Closing the show this week were Pixie Lott and Trent with Samba. I’m delighted to say performed to ‘proper’ Samba music. The choreography had everything, it was full of strong Samba steps, the difficult rhythm changes and along with Pixie’s superb body and leg lines was an excellent performance. She just needs to watch her toes which sometimes turn inwards when stepping forward. I awarded her 9 and the judges 35. This week I actually agreed with the judges top and bottom 2. Top were Caroline and Pixie and the bottom Judy and Scott. The public selected Thom and Simon and for the first time in Strictly history, the dance off resulted in a split decision with Len’s casting vote saving Simon so Thom was unfortunately eliminated after the dance off. These 2 definitely shouldn’t have been in the dance off and it just goes to show that the ones in the middle of the table are in a very precarious position as voters go for the top and the bottom dancers, hence a result such as this. I did agree with Len’s decision and would also have saved Simon. So the weak links live to fight another day! Next week will be Halloween so anything will go with the costumes. Until then come and join one of our classes to keep up with the ‘Strictly’ gossip as it happens. In the meantime - Keep Dancing!

valle del este golf society

It has been a busy time for the valle del este golf society with 30+ players and guests heading to Murcia for a golfing break. Two courses were chosen for the 28 players, la serena and mar menor both of which were in good condition and playing well. The European father and son golf tournament will be held week commencing 27th October at Valle del este and once again Sky TV will be filming the event for sky sports. The competitors will be playing all week with the grand final on Friday, spectators are welcome to cheer the teams on. Valle del este members will be caddying, ball spotting and checking the scores during the event, all of which continues to put the area on the map. 19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador

Back to our normal time and day for this Team Texas Scramble competition on Thurday 23 October at the really beautiful Aguilon Course. With six, equally balanced teams, this had all the makings of a close competition, but of course with Mark Danson in a Team he is always likely to prove the exception to the rule and on this occasion, he did. Marks team of Dave Rust, Byron Sherlock and Dave Denyer romped home with an almost embarrassing score of Nett 58. Mark also managed a couple of Twos on his leisurely trip round the course. In second place the team of Lee Coxon, Syd Walker, Mick Craswell and Chrissy Dow with a nett score of 64.

Interestingly all six teams returned nett score of below par, which on this very difficult course is remarkable. Shot of the day was by Byron on the 18th; his drive following his sure sounding assurance of “I’ll never reach them” went through Mike Palmers buggy rear window and exited through the front wind screen. Byron conceded that it was the longest drive he had made all day, to which Mike Palmer replied “Oh that’s OK then” A really

great day’s golf (but I would say that as I was in the winning team). Brian Lowden tee shot on the 17th par 3 hit the flag and ended no more that 2 foot from a hole in one. Results; Texas Scamble 1st Mark Danson, Dave Rust, Byron Sherlock and Dave Denyer Nett 58 2nd Lee Coxon, Syd Walker, Mick Craswell and Chrissy Dow Nett 64 Nearest the Pin. Hole No 8 Lee Coxon Hole No 12 Terry Caddick Hole 17Brian Lowden. Twos; Mark Danson 3rd & 17th Brian Lowden 17th Terry Caddick 12th Thanks to all the members who support the 19th Hole Golf Society. The 19th hole G/S is now arranging weekly games at various courses in the area, our home course, which we will play fortnightly, is Aguilon. If you are interested in joining the 19th hole give the secretary a ring on 610340653. or email gs19thhole@ hotmail.co.uk

Urcal Golf Society

The latest competition for Urcal Golf Society members and guests saw a good turnout travel to Aguilon to contest an Individual Stableford on Saturday 25th October playing for the Urcal Challenge Cup. The weather was ideal for golf with warm sunshine and very little wind. Aguilon as usual was in superb condition and must be one of the best courses in the area at the moment. Gary Funnell playing off nine handicap carded a very creditable 35 points to take the Challenge Cup for the first time from Stan Whitty in second place with

33 points and Barry Kilby in third with 30 points. Longest drive of the day on the long par 5 fifth hole went to Trevor Nicholson who after his tremendous hole in one last time out continued his good form with another prize and also finished the main competition in fourth place. There were two nearest the pin prizes, one went to our guest for the day Derick Dale with a good shot on the difficult third hole and on the short seventeenth par three, long time member John Smith took the honour Preparations are now well under way for our next event which is Captains Day on November 8th which is to be played at Valle Del Este. It is hoped there will be an exceptional turnout in thanks for all the hard Servicing, Repairs, Accesories. work our Captain Steve Children, Mtb, Road, Hybrid & Electric Bikes Dodd has done for the society this year. 2014 bikes 20% discount Anyone wishing to join Urcal Golf Society or play mark in the shop a guest please ring 10-2pm tues-thurs-sats or call 678166252 as 608 238 827 you will be avda. lepanto, 36 opposite sports stadium next to Total Entertainment made most welcome.
