‘Best Whisky in the World’ Is No Longer Scottish
A Japanese whisky has been named the “best in the world,” upstaging traditionally favored
Scottish brands, which did not make it into the top five, according to a new ranking. Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 was awarded the title by whisky connoisseur Jim Murray, whose 2015 edition of the Whisky Bible will be published next week, the Daily Mail reported. Described as “near incredible genius” for its “nose of exquisite boldness” and finish of “light, teasing spice”, Murray gave the drink 97.5 marks out of 100. Yamazaki is Japan’s first and oldest distillery, established in 1923 by Suntory’s founder Shinjiro Torii. For the first time,
no Scottish distillery was ranked in the top five, according to the Daily Mail, which got an advanced copy of the guide. Varieties of Scotch whisky have been crowned best in the world in two of the last three years - Old Pulteney’s 21 year-old single malt in 2012 and Glenmorangie Ealanta in 2014.The Whisky Bible, launched in 2003, provides detailed tasting notes on 4,500 whiskies. Poor diet ‘Causes Lifetime Damage’
Poor diet ‘causes lifetime damage’: Foods full of fat, sugar and salt change the way genes work, say scientists. The damage caused by unhealthy eating can last a lifetime – even after going on a diet, according to research. Scientists suggest that foods full of fat, sugar and salt change the way genes work and even swapping them for fish, fruit and vegetables cannot turn back the clock. Tests on mice found that those fed a junk food diet were still more prone to hardening of the arteries even after treatment because the function of genes, including those vital to the immune system, had been altered in a process known as ‘epigenetics’. Researcher Erik van Kampen, of Leiden University, Holland, said: ‘I hope this study demonstrates the importance of diet induced changes in the epigenome and encourages further research into the interaction between dietary patterns, DNA methylation and disease.’ In the study genetically engineered mice prone to atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries reducing the flow of oxygen rich blood, were either fed a diet high in fat and cholesterol over several months or a normal, chow based alternative. But after treatment, including lowering of blood cholesterol and
a change in dietary habits, bone marrow tests showed the former group still had large differences in their immune system and increased atherosclerosis. Dr John Wherry, deputy editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology which published the research, said: ‘We have long known lifestyle and nutrition could affect immune system function. ‘The ability of nutritional history to have durable affects on immune cells demonstrated in this new report could have profound implications for treatment of diseases with immune underpinnings. ‘The length of such effects will be critical to determine and it will be interesting to examine the effects of drugs that can modify epigenetics.’ Source: www.dailymail.co.uk

Cheryl Hits Back After Crtitcism Off Duty Nurse Saves Boxers Life
Cheryl Fernandez-Versini has responded to criticism for miming during her performance of her new single I Don’t Care on The X Factor on Sunday evening. On Monday night, the former Girls Aloud singer shared a post with her 1.1 million Instagram followers about her latest album: “For those who have pre-ordered your copy of my album #OnlyHuman go to iTunes at midnight.. There’s a little something for you.” As well as positive comments, Cheryl received a sarcastic one from a certain follower: “Do we get discount on your mimed performance you did on sat?’” The pop star couldn’t help but reply: “Aww bless you live performances are not included on albums I’m afraid. “And I performed on Sunday! Don’t mug yourself off on my page. It’s not cute. Go teach some dance instead.” The criticism comes after fans took to Twitter at the weekend – having seen Cheryl perform her new track surrounded by backing dancers and wearing a plunging white cropped top and thigh-high boots – accusing her of miming during the pre-recorded performance. Cheryl, 31, has previously spoken about responding to social media critics. “I do. I have done! I’ve said I feel bad for you,” she said. “Actually out of 100 people there’s
maybe three or four that want to say something mean, but I feel bad for them or I click on their profile and that’s enough for me.” Cheryl’s live performance made a significant change to the acoustic rendition of the track that she shared on YouTube last week. The black-and-white video shows the singer at work with accompaniment only from a piano and minimal backing singers, standing with a microphone and showing off her vocals beautifully. A Co Down man who owes his life to an off-duty nurse has spoken of his sudden collapse and how he thought he “was a goner”. Sean McLaughlin had signed up to take part in an amateur boxing tournament at the weekend and described himself as being in great shape. However, after only two rounds in the ring he suddenly felt unwell, collapsed, and sparked a major medical emergency. Fortunately for the 44-year-old businessman from Killyleagh, a specialist cardiac nurse he now calls his “guardian angel” was in the community hall supporting the charity efforts of the event’s organisers. Downe Hospital cardiac rehabilitation nurse Roisin Dorian had arrived at the hall in Ardglass just in time to see Order of Malta first-aiders rush into the ring. “I saw they were doing CPR, and I realised it was serious. I just dived into the ring and shouted for a defibrillator, and fortunately the Order of Malta had one. “He was unconscious at that stage. I did two lots of CPR and shocked him once, and by the time the ambulance came he was beginning to come round. “I am very proud that I was able to help,” Roisin said. Sean is now a patient in the Ulster Hospital’s coronary care unit waiting for a triple bypass operation. Meeting the woman who saved his
el Cucador
life, Sean gave her a hug and said: “I am glad you were there, otherwise I was a goner.” Roisin responded: “I just did what I am trained to do. It’s a great feeling that I was able to save Sean’s life.” The charity event was taking place on Saturday night in aid of the Coney Island youth soccer team. Sean only became involved a few weeks ago after someone else pulled out, but he had recently lost two stone in weight and had been training regularly. “I was doing well in the gym and felt really fit and healthy,” he said. However, those two rounds in the ring have brought Sean’s boxing career to an abrupt end. “I don’t think I will be doing it again. I can’t remember what happened on Saturday night, I can just remember seeing the ceiling. “I owe my life to Roisin, and I can’t thank her enough.” By coincidence, it will be Roisin who will be looking after Sean’s recovery on his discharge from hospital. “He will be sick of the sight of me by then,” she joked. On a more serious note, Roisin added: “This demonstrates the importance of every public building, or event, having a defibrillator to hand.” Source: www.newsletter.co.uk

Tobacco firms win legal right to challenge EU rules
Tobacco firms have won the right to challenge new European Union rules on cigarette packaging. The High Court referred the case to the EU’s Court of Justice after a hearing in London on Monday. Philip Morris, BAT and Imperial Tobacco were among firms joining forces to attack the legality of the EU’s Tobacco Products Directive. The new rules mean picture health rulings would have to cover 65% of the front and back of cigarette packaging. Europe’s highest court will be asked to rule whether the EU has misused its powers to legislate for tobacco, and whether its actions are “proportionate”. The court must decide if the new directive complies with European guarantees on fundamental rights and the principle of “subsidiarity” whether decisions should be taken on a national or regional level rather than by the EU. The tobacco companies went to court in England because it provides a “fast and efficient forum for private litigants” to reach the European courts, they said. The EU says the new rules will “deter young people from experimenting with, and becoming addicted to,
tobacco”. But Philip Morris senior vice president Marc Firestone said the directive “raises serious questions” about the free movement of goods and competition within the EU. “We believe the directive disrupts the balance that the EU treaties establish between the Union and the member states, and we are looking forward to a thorough, objective review by the EU’s highest court,” he said. Mr Firestone said there was no disagreement that tobacco products should be strictly regulated, “but measures must honour the EU treaties”. The review by the Court of Justice could take up to two years. Source: www.bbc.co.uk

It’s a comfort to know your funeral is taken care of and that you won’t be a burden to family or friends at a difficult time. A simple, inflation proof way to pay for the funeral you want, that saves you money Funerals are expensive and are getting more expensive all the time. 2014 week 7 With a coveted place at the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool at stake this week the challenge was on to achieve that goal and not be the unfortunate one eliminated this week. Opening the show were Simon Webb and Kristina with a Quickstep. This had to be one of Simon’s best dances with a superb range of quickstep steps with hops, skips, kicks and flicks in abundance and Simon showing great enthusiasm, he looked to have really enjoyed his performance this week after his scare a couple of weeks ago in the bottom two. I awarded him 8 and the judges 33. Next to dance were Caroline Flack and Pasha and their Waltz to the beautiful once, twice, three times a lady. She showed a nice fluid Waltz with beautiful hand placements on extensions but because of a little more work being needed to her core, she was a little unbalanced in places due to her lack of leg extension. I gave her an 8 and the judges 31. Next to perform were Jake Wood and Janette with a Rumba danced to Strangers in the Night. As always with Jake he consistently pulls off the character of the dance, the Rumba being the dance of love. However, his actual Rumba performance was rather disappointing as his hip action was
very stilted so the dance was not as fluid as it could have been. That said, this is a very difficult dance for a male celebrity to pull off. I gave him 6 and the judges 27. Next were Judy Murray and Anton with a Paso Doble. And she didn’t disappoint, in other words, it was a total non-dance yet again! Time to go Mrs Murray to make way for the ones who should be there! The awful piece of music was way too fast for her and she was fighting speed apart from the steps from start to finish. As a result I gave her 3 and the judges 18. Sunetra Sarker and Brendan were next out with a Foxtrot danced to All of Me. The Foxtrot (like the Rumba in the Latin section) is the most difficult dance to perfect and unfortunately, so it proved to be for Sunetra. Due to the fact that she was dropping her weight back when moving backwards, she was unable to retain body contact with her partner so resulted in a rather unbalanced looking Foxtrot. That said, she did manage to keep it elegant and as smooth as she could so I awarded her 7 and she received 31 from the judges. Allison Hammond and Aljaz then came out with their Charleston to the music I’ve Got a Friend In You. This was a really fun, entertaining performance from start
By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info 635584 431
to finish. Despite the fact that it was impossible to do the majority of tricks with lifts that are normally showcased in this dance, Allison did lift Aljaz at one point! I gave her 8 and the judges 27. Next were Mark Wright and Karen with the Waltz to When Will I See You Again. With beautiful romantic characterisation, Mark’s smile can melt any woman’s heart. And if not the perfect performance, it was enjoyable for a difficult to control dance which was just lacking a little more swing and sway. I awarded him 7 and the judges 31. Next to perform was Frankie Bridge and Kevin with a Samba to La Bamba. Another action packed, high energy performance complete with many standard Samba technical steps well danced. She made a few errors but covered her tracks well and for that I gave her 9 and the judges 32. Pixie Lott and Trent then danced a Foxtrot to When I’m 64. This was another beautiful fluid performance, full of grace and elegance throughout with an improved posture. The only criticism is that she sometimes slides too far left of her partner making her right arm straighten and show some tension, she also needs to track her feet and not lift them from the floor in her basic moves. I gave her 9 and
the judges 36. Closing the show were Steve Backshall and Ola with a Paso Doble to Use Somebody by Kings of Leon. Unfortunately, there was more cape wafting to start!! Not exactly the best either! Not one of his best dances, even though he tried to attack the dance, he just didn’t drive his weight from one foot to the other and as a result his Paso Doble looked very plonky and pedestrian and overall lacking in stretch and strength in lines. I gave him 6 and the judges 28. As a result this week the judges bottom 2 were Judy and Allison and Jake, my bottom 2 were Judy, Steve and Jake and my top 2 were Caroline, Frankie and Pixie, with the judges favouring Pixie and Simon. The public surprisingly had Allison and Caroline in the bottom 2 and after the dance off unfortunately Allison left the show after another unanimous vote by the judges so all the others are on their way North for the Tower Ballroom, Blackpool next week. With the floor many times larger than the studio, it remains to be seen who can make the grade to ‘fill’ the space and not look lost like a fish out of water. Come and join our classes to keep up with the ‘strictly’ gossip but in the meantime Keep Dancing!

Care and Maintenance of Palm Trees Pruning Palm Trees or as it is sometimes called trimming palms is an important part of the care for your Palm Trees. It is as atypical as Palm Trees themselves. Palms are monocots which means Palm Trees do not have a continued outward growth in their trunks like a typical tree where new wood is being created. A Palm’s trunk may appear to grow like a tree but in reality it is an expansion of the tissue first formed. Green palm leaves, or fronds, are the palms sole source of food (from photosynthesis). Fertilizer
is NOT food, but a source of micronutrients the palm uses, along with water and sunlight to make its food. When green leaves are removed, the palm cannot make the ideal amount of food it needs to survive. Fortunately most palms are quite tolerant of this ‘abuse’ and can deal with suboptimal amounts of green leaves... up to a point. So there should be good reasons to prune palms ‘prematurely’ as well as pruning in general.” Pruning Your Palm Trees - Part of Palm Tree Care

When mature, fruits may provide food for pests such as rodents and birds. Palms, such as date Palm Trees, produce infertile (where there are no male trees near by) or fertile fruit that will later drop, make a mess or stain concrete surfaces. The seeds of some Palms such as Fan Palm Trees (Washingtonia robusta/ filifera) will germinate in undesired areas of the landscape. 4. getting too big for the space in which the Palms are growing. 5. When Palm Trees are field dug and transplanted bare root, half of the fronds on most species can be removed. This care reduces the transpiration rate and facilitates handling and shipping by taking up less room on the truck. Some experts believe that after planting Palm Trees, the fronds of field dug Palms should be untied when new root growth is noted (Pfalzgraf 1999). The University of Florida has found that Sabal Palm species survive transplanting better if all fronds are removed. (Broschat 1991). However, this is an exception, true only for this genus. 6. Palm Tree care includes removing fruits and seeds. Some palms produce seeds that germinate in the landscape or fruit that makes a mess and smells bad when it drops. Most Palm Trees do not produce either fronds or fruit large enough to cause damage when falling. In My Expert Opinion
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. I have based this series of articles on the “pc for dummies” series of books. There couldn’t be a worse possible title for a self help guide book! Surprisingly though, it is quite useful for helping me find another way to help you, the absolute novice. Last week we covered the back of the box and I said that although this a generic type of box, your computer maybe a little different and might need a little more hunting to find the part described. Before we start I did read some sage words of advice and would like to pass them on to you and these are they;”It usually isn’t your fault! Computers also get it wrong occasionally and so do the programmers that make the programs.” So rule number 1 – the chance that you are the one that messed up is small! Very wisely the author does talk about surge protectors and UPS! We all know that here in Spain the power supply isn’t always stable or clean (this simply means that the power doesn’t suddenly drop or, go the other way and, spike). A surge protector prevents the power spikes hitting your machine and maybe (read ‘very rarely’) cause damage to the computer or your precious data. These are generally cheap(ish) and can save you a wad of cash later (maybe). Because Spain’s power supply is, at best, unpredictable, I would suggest an UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply). All this is, is a box with a battery and some clever circuitry. You simply plug it into the wall and plug your monitor and tower / desktop / internet power box, into it. Should the power go off suddenly, you will have between 10 and 30 minutes to save everything that you are working on and turn off your computer properly. This will save you cost (possible damage to your hard drive), anguish (the loss of important information) and did I mention cost? As we have already talked about the big red On/Off button that is neither big or red! I would like to move onto the most popular Operating System (OS) used in the home computer market. I, of course, refer to Microsoft’s Windows OS. We, of a more innocent time, remember DOS, LINUX and UNIX. Everyone
else has come into computing with Windows in it’s various formats and it’s a damn fine system! My proudest moment is when a new user finally manages to use the ‘FDISK’ command successfully, because it means that they are on the great path of study that an OS can offer. It also means that they have truly screwed up their computer properly! Most, thankfully, never successfully use FDISK or FORMAT C: commands! How important is your OS? That can be the £64 million question. Without it you have a beautifully crafted box of electronics that does absolutely nothing! It has potential but needs major help. Flip the question over and ask “How important is the OS?”. Without the box it is simply, at best, a text file having 1 million lines of ‘gobble de gook’ and is about as useful as a chocolate fire-guard! Put them together and wonderful things can happen! Look at this as a layer cake (food analogue coming up), the electronics are the necessary biscuit base; The OS (Windows XP, 7, 8.x and soon 10) is the gooey, sticky main part of the cake; and finally to top it off is the Program Applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Jamie Oliver’s Self-De-archiving cookbook and cheat list). So what, precisely, does the OS do? It has 3 main tasks: 1. To run itself! I know that sounds weird but an OS needs to maintain itself. 2. To organise the programs, your precious information and waste into the right place, at the right time, and to do it without you having to worry about it. 3. To serve as a base from which you can choose and use whatever program that you want to use right now! Next time, we will look at the desktop (XP, 7, 8.x and 10 are all different and might need some explaining) and explain what it is, where it comes from and do we need it? Have a truly terrific weekend playing with the “Format c:” and “Fdisk” commands – just kidding DON’T USE EITHER OF THEM!!! I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!
For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk
News A History of Moorish Spain IV Upon Abd ar-Rahman II’s death in 852; Muhammad I succeeded his father to become Emir in Cordoba. He moved quickly as his father’s favourite wife Princess Tarub tried to pass her son Abdullah off as heir. Life for Muhammad I was trying from the start; he banished the eunuchs from the court he’d inherited from his father plus the many widowed wives. He strengthened ties with North Africa and got his nobles to plead an oath of allegiance. Musa Ibn Musa was one of these nobles, later known as the third King of Spain; he controlled a kingdom across the centre of modern Spain that stretched from Huesca in the west through Toledo to Zaragoza: Equal in size to Al Andalus in the south and the Christian Kingdom of Asturias to the north. Within a week of Mohammad being crowned Toledo rebelled; supported by King Ordono of Asturias. Cordoba allied with Musa sent troops to quell the revolt but it flared up again. A year
I’d like to become an expert. Every second person seems to be one these days, but how do I become one? The reason I ask is because I’m always reading about them in papers and magazines, or hearing from them on the TV and radio. Experts are called upon to comment on just about everything, from anti aging cream, to spaghetti recipes, to UFO sightings, to rain storms and emergencies at the local bus stop. The word ‘expert’ is used in the media almost as often as the word ‘massive.’ An increase in the rate of inflation becomes a massive increase; a snow storm in America is always a massive snow storm and an aeroplane making an emergency landing at Luton sets into motion a massive security alert. The funniest bit for me is when the two words are combined. The Channel Ten news presenter announces that, ‘A massive security alert was set in motion earlier today when a British Airways charter flight from Rome was diverted to Luton airport after the captain declared an emergency. It’s thought a passenger was smoking in the toilet and set off a smoke alarm. The plane was intercepted over Brighton by RAF fighter jets and given priority ground clearance to land. The Prime Minister has been informed of the situation at his holiday retreat in Florida. We now cross to our aviation security expert, John Smith, who’s at the scene . . . John, what can you tell us?’ John then proceeds to repeat all the information, virtually word for word, that the presenter had given us in the introduction to the story and once he’s finished, stares into the camera, waiting for the follow up question, at which point the news presenter says, ‘John, we gather the airport has been closed for most of the day while forensic tests are carried out and massive delays to flights are expected for the next 24 hours . . . what further developments have there been?’ If John had a little thought bubble coming out of his head it would be saying, ‘Well, I can’t actually tell you anything more because you’ve already said it all.’ However, as he’s getting handsomely paid as an expert, he goes ahead and confirms that, ‘Yes Anna, the airport has been closed (adding the detail) since four o’clock whilst forensic tests are carried out (more detail) on the toilet where the offence is thought to have occurred. As a result, massive delays to flights are expected to last (he adds) until tomorrow morning,’ – Pause – ‘So passengers are being advised to contact an emergency number (which scrolls across the screen) for more information. Anna, back to you in the studio.’ I could do that. I could be that expert. I could repeat everything the person before me had said and make it sound profoundly ‘expert like,’ just like John. But how does one get started in the expert world? I suspect it might all be to do with being in the right place at the right time; now you have to be an expert to achieve that. By Paul Martin

later Toledo was finally defeated with Mohammad personally in charge. Legend has it that 8000 enemy soldiers were beheaded with their skulls gruesomely piled on top of each other as a warning to others. Musa’s son was made Wali of Toledo, fatefully Musa in an act of revenge against Asturias; granted safe passage across his kingdom to a Viking raiding party to Pamplona. This backfired as on arrival the Vikings kidnapped his nephew Garcia. A ransom of 80,000 gold dinars secured his release but Garcia was rather irked and switched his allegiance to king Ordono. Together they attacked Musa coincidentally at the same time as the Christians (remember them?) 300 years later this was fictionalised as the battle of Clavijo with Saint James miraculously appearing to lead the Christians to victory against Musa. Muhammad I in 860 cancelled Musa’s autonomy and attacked the Christian kingdom of Pamplona with Musa under his command. They captured Prince
Fortun Garces who was returned to Cordoba where he lived in luxurious exile for the next 20 years. Fortun’s daughter Onneca travelled to Cordoba as well and two years later she married Muhammad I’s son Abdullah. This was a rare marriage between a Christian princess and Muslim Royalty. They had three children together; Mohammad after his grandfather and two daughters; al-Baha and Fatima. When in 880 her father was allowed to return to Pamplona she left with him and married a Christian cousin. The son Mohammad was assassinated by his half-brother 27 years later but his own son ensured his mother’s legacy lived on. Back in Cordoba Muhammad I’s revolting times continued. In 868 Ibn Marwan led a revolt in Badajoz against the Emirs rule. Cordoba responded by laying siege to Badajoz, Ibn Marwan surrendered as he was offered generous
terms. He was exiled to Cordoba where he stayed until 875. Those years of captivity didn’t work as when he returned to Badajoz he organised another rebellion. An army was sent from Cordoba commanded by the feared Abd-al-Aziz. Aided by King Alfonso III of Leon, Ibn Marwan not only won the battle but took Abd-al-Aziz hostage. Alfonso III was repaid by his help by earning a ransom of 100,000 gold dinars. Badajoz was fortified by Ibn Marwan and he went on to conquer a large area to the south with it becoming semi-independent state for the next 60 years. Before his death in 886; Muhammad 1lastly had to deal with the infamous Umar ibn Hafsun who rose to prominence in 879 in the south of Spain in what is now Malaga but that’s a story for another time

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
Inheritance Tax Planning
Q. My wife and I are resident in Marbella. I have the house we live in & 11 rental properties (5 in Marbella & 6 in Javea). Total value of these assets is 2,500,000€. All properties are in my name. It is my third wife and the properties were mine when we married 10 years ago. My wife is 30 years younger than me and my health is poor. I’m now extremely concerned about inheritance tax she will have to pay when I die. To make things more complex in virtue of a contract signed in UK with my ex- business partner I still owe him 400,000€. My wife has since cosigned this contract. A. How big is the problem? If you do nothing your wife will have a very large tax bill of just under 800,000€. Why so much? In principle wives in Andalucia are entitled to inherit tax free if the estate is worth less than 175,000€. When the estate is worth more , you pay on everything but the first 16,000€. The other reason that makes the tax so high, is that in principle I can’t reduce the value of the property with the loan as for the tax office to accept that a loan reduces the equity on a property, they require that the loan is documented on title deed in the form of a mortgage with the document tax paid and the deed registered with the property register. We would obviously fight this, but in principle this is how it works. Possible solutions? 1. The best solution would be for you and your wife to move your residence to one of your properties in Calpe (the autonomous region of Valencia has very high exemption rates for inheritance tax in comparison to Andalucia). If you both reside in Calpe for a minimum of three years before you die, inheritance tax would be payable to the Autonomous region of Valencia instead of Andalucia. This would allow you to
obtain a discount of 75% of your tax bill with a maximum discount of 150,000€. This would bring your bill down to 650,000€. In addition you should document the loan to your ex-partner on a mortgage deed in Spain and have it registered at the property register. In this way the debt at the moment of death will be deductible. The taxable estate would then be 2,500,000-400,000€: 2,100,000€.The tax bill in Andalucia would then be 642,000€ and if you lived in Calpe 492,00€. 2. If you have children with your wife this would enable more savings, especially in Calpe. If two children - leave the estate divided between your wife and children in 3 equal shares to benefit in various ways, but the most important saving is that each heir would be entitled (because they live in the Valencia region) to a reduction of 75% of their tax bill with a maximum of 150,000€. We end up getting 450,000€ in exemptions instead of just 150,000€. If you all lived in Calpe and you left your estate to all three and document the loan correctly they would each pay 42,500€ . The total tax bill would therefore be 127,500€. Conclusion: Do nothing - total inheritance tax bill: 800,000€. Stay in Marbella but document your loan correctly: 642,000€. Move from Marbella to Calpe and document your loan correctly: Inheritance tax bill for your wife: 490,000€. Move to Calpe, document your loan correctly and leave your estate to your wife and two children in equal shares: Total inheritance tax bill: 127,500€. Please note that it is impossible to achieve the above without professional guidance.

Price of Second Hand Homes Home Sales Fell by 0.1% in October Under
News
400,000 Euros to be Spared the Tax Blow
Month-on-month, the price of used housing in Spain fell by just 0.1% in October compared with the previous month, to stand at a price of 1,600 euros per square metre, according to the latest house price index from property portal idealista. com, indicating that the year-on-year decline in October amounted to 5.1%. Despite this decline, prices have now risen in five regions, with the home owners’ expectations increasing most in the Canary Islands (+0.7%), followed by Valencia (+0.4%), Catalonia (+0.3%), Andalucía and Extremadura (+0.1% in both cases). House prices remained stable during
the last three months in the Balearic Islands and Navarra, while the largest declines were registered in Castilla-La Mancha (-1.1%), Aragón (-0.8%) and Castilla y León and Galicia (-0.6% in both cases). El Economista reported that Euskadi, with a price per square metre of 2,676 euros, remains the most expensive region, followed by Madrid (2,304 euros per square metre) and Catalonia (1,849 euros). In contrast, the regions which registered the lowest prices per square metre were Castilla-La Mancha (1,008 euros), Extremadura (1,039 euros) and Murcia (1,086 euros) Source: www.kyero.com
The Spanish Government has finally agreed to soften the blow, in the new tax reforms, on second hand home sales. An amendment to the draft Income Tax bill has been filed in order to mitigate the effect of deleting the adjustment coefficient – a leeway to limiting the big capital gains of the 80s – and the monetary correction indices – which take into account revaluation due to inflation – on capital gains obtained on the sale of homes purchased before December 1994. This new formula would, in practice, have meant a blow for the sale of second hand housing from 1st January, 2015. Those who bought a flat or house in Spain before December 1994, who are under 65, and sell it at a profit, would have had to pay much more tax from next year (providing the house is not the primary residence).
Now the Partido Popular, with the approval of the Ministry of Finance, has tabled an amendment to the Bill before the Spanish Parliament, to maintain the reduced rates for capital gains “until the cumulative sum of the transmission value of the property exceeds 400,000 euros”. The new treatment of capital gains acquired before 1994 not only affected housing but also inherited assets – precious metals, antiques, works of art, securities, etc. – purchased before that date and sold at a profit. El País reported that the Treasury had received many calls to eliminate this new measure included in the tax reform, with the President of the Community of Madrid, Ignacio Gonzalez, and housing associations being among those to condemn the measure. Following the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes held in Berlin last week, together with the political agreement reached at the EU ECOFIN Council meeting on 14th October for establishing this type of automatic exchange of information system within the European Union, a total of 54 countries and territories around the world committed to a multilateral agreement between the competent authorities, on the automatic exchange of financial account information, representing an historic and radical step forward in terms of transparency and international fiscal control, within an economic climate that is becoming increasingly global and interrelated. Furthermore, the project remains open to new members and there is no doubt that new countries and jurisdictions will join in the future. The Spanish Government reported on their website, La Moncloa, that the multilateral automatic exchange of financial account information agreement is the result of a project set in motion by Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the United Kingdom. The so-called G-5 sent a letter to the European Commissioner for Tax Affairs in 2013 expressing their intention to move forward with extending the automatic exchange of financial account information in line with the FATCA agreement model with the United States, the development of which they were all actively involved in. Based on this G-5 project, the OECD approved a model agreement on this common and standardised system for information exchange on 17th January 2014. The scope of the information to be exchanged via this system is extremely
broad. Specifically, it covers all types of financial accounts (bank deposits, negotiable securities, holdings in investments funds, insurance policies, incomes, etc.) and will include data on balances, amounts received from incomes or transfers, and identification of the person or entity holding and effectively controlling the account. The automatic exchange of information will begin in 2017 with data on financial accounts that are open at the end of 2015 and those that are opened subsequently, and the information will be exchanged on an annual basis and automatically, i.e. without the need to file a request with the foreign tax authorities for information regarding an individual case, after possible fraud has been detected. The Spanish Tax Office (AEAT) will hence have access to a system for the automatic and standardised exchange of information on all sorts of financial accounts. Appropriate use of the information received on taxpayers residing in Spain – in coordination with other initiatives such as the obligation to declare assets located overseas (Form 720) – represents a decisive step forward in the effective application of the Spanish tax system, enabling the practice of increased tax bases declared and fraud by those residents whose tax returns do not correspond with the assets or incomes they have overseas to be stamped out. Furthermore, it will also lead to an increase in public revenue that will make it possible to reduce the burden on those taxpayers who comply with their tax obligations. Source: http://news.kyero.com

News COMPLETE COMPLETE HOLIDAY HOLIDAY CARE CARE
House Prices Fell by 4.3% Y-o-Y in Q3
According to the IMIE Local Markets House Price Index for the third quarter of 2014, published last week by property appraisers, Tinsa, the average price of housing in Spain fell by 4.3% in the third quarter, compared to the same period in 2013, accumulating a decline of 40.3% since the maximum values reached in the last quarter of 2007, just before the start of the crisis. The company says that this data confirms the moderation in the fall being registered for average house prices, since the decline in the three months to September is less than half the year-on-year decline of 9.3% registered in the same quarter of 2013. Tinsa also notes that housing prices have even recorded year-on-year increases in six capitals, ten provinces and three regions. The appraisal company estimates that the house price adjustments registered in recent years will come to a conclusion at the end of this year, when they predict that prices will stabilise. However, they indicated that this forecast is dependent on “compliance with the forecasts of economic growth and employment” and highlighted as “potential threats” the “stagnation of the European economies which are recipients of Spanish exports, the slow-
down in domestic consumption and the negative rates of inflation”. The three regions to register yearon-year price increases in the third quarter of year were Extremadura, with a rise of 5.6%, Galicia (+1.9%) and La Rioja (+0.4%). In contrast, Europa Press reported that nine regions still recorded declines greater than the annual average rate of 4.3%. Navarre registered the sharpest decline (-13.9%), ahead of Asturias (-9.6%), Castilla y León (9.1%), the Canary Islands (-7.4%), Valencia (- 6.8%), Andalucía (-6.2%) and Castilla La Mancha (-5.5%). Registering declines below 5% were Madrid, where the average house price fell by 4.6%, and Catalonia (-4%). Of the ten provinces to register yearon-year increases in the third quarter, those with the greatest increases were La Coruña (+8.4%), Huesca (+5.7%), Badajoz (+5.3%), Cáceres (+3.4%) and Guipúzcoa (+1.9%), while the Tinsa index shows that the six provincial capitals to register increases, compared to the third quarter of 2013, were: Teruel (+3.8%); Zaragoza (+2.1%); Malaga (+1.7%); Pontevedra (+1.6%); Cáceres (+0.6%) and Barcelona (+0.1%). Eating Space… Breakfast bars don’t take up as much space as a table and provide seating for two to six or even more, often with storage space below. They’re best for informal eating or a quick snack rather than a big meal. Many kitchens come with the option of including a breakfast bar when you have them designed and fitted. More often than not, the breakfast bar is an extension of the kitchen worktop and is usually made of the same material. However, using more than one type of surface can create a feature area; it’s easier on the eye to use a different material if

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galraith “Her head had bled a little into the snow. The face was crushed and swollen, one eye reduced to a pucker, the other showing as a sliver of dull white distended lids.” A dramatic opening, the death of a beautiful supermodel in suspicious circumstances, having fallen from her Mayfair penthouse caused a big stir with the paparazzi. Detective Inspector Roy Carver and Detective Sergeant Eric Wardle were on the case. Lula Landy, like the late Princess Diana was one of the most photographed women in the world. It seems that both women were hounded to death by the pressure of celebrity and attention. Her death dominated the news showing her “flawless face, her lithe and sculpted body” but within three months “The frenzy wore itself into staleness.” Lula was an interesting character, having been adopted by a wealthy white family. She had been investigating her biological roots and had discovered a black halfbrother who she had made contact with. She was expelled from school for dabbling in drugs and ran off to London to live rough with addicts. Her on-off boyfriend was an addict, violent at times, a musician called Evan Duffield and she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She had been signed up by Guy Some the
fashion designer after winning a modelling contract worth 5 million pounds over 2 years. When she died she had accumulated a fortune of 10 million. Before her death there had been a row with Duffield and he became chief suspect but at this stage, the conclusion amounted to: “The poor cow jumped. There was no one else there.” No further investigation. Three months later we meet her adopted half-brother, John Bristow, a lawyer for Landry, May and Patterson. He chooses Cordoran Strike , Private Detective with an equally interesting past who is down on his luck. His military career came to an abrupt end with a serious injury when he lost part of his leg. His long term girlfriend and his turbulent relationship with Charlotte has finally floundered

Santander Quarterly Profit Jumps on Spain Recovery, U.K.
Banco Santander SA (SAN) said thirdquarter profit rose 52 percent, beating estimates, as charges for bad loans dropped in Spain and earnings climbed in the U.K. and Brazil. Net income at Spain’s largest lender increased to 1.61 billion euros ($2 billion) from 1.06 billion euros a year earlier, the Santander, Spain-based bank said in a filing to regulators today. That compared with the 1.53 billion-euro average estimate in a Bloomberg survey of 17 analysts. Under Ana Botin, who became chairman in September after the death of her father, Emilio, Santander is counting on Spain’s economic recovery to boost profit as its U.K. bank continues to drive earnings growth. In his last speech to shareholders in March, Emilio Botin said they should expect Spanish earnings to lift profit back toward pre-crisis levels of about 9 billion euros by 2016. “The main driver is going to be Spain because of lower provisions and the improvement in margins” Carlos Peixoto, an analyst at Banco BPI SA in Porto, Portugal, said in an interview before the earnings.“The U.K. is on a stronger track.” Santander shares fell 0.5 percent to 6.96 euros as of 2:24 p.m. in Madrid, paring the stock’s gain to 6.9 percent this year. The 49member Stoxx Europe 600 Banks Index is down 1.4 percent this year. U.K. Profit The bank increased its cost savings target
to 1 billion euros in 2014 from a 750 millioneuro goal, and now predicts 2 billion euros of savings in 2016 compared with its previous target for that year of 1.5 billion euros. Net interest income, or the difference between what the bank charges for loans and pays for its funding, rose to 7.47 billion euros from 6.94 billion euros a year earlier. Bad loans as a share of total lending fell for a third straight quarter, dropping to 5.28 percent from 5.45 percent in June, the bank said. Loans newly classified as in default during the quarter plunged to 1.96 billion euros from 4.72 billion euros a year ago. Earnings from Santander’s Spanish banking business almost quadrupled to 309 million euros, as loan-loss provisions fell to 429 million euros from 630 million euros a year earlier. Profit from the U.K. jumped 34 percent to 411 million euros, while profit from Brazil rose 14 percent to 409 million euros. “The quality of the results is relatively weak, with net interest income in Spain, Brazil and Chile lower than our expectations, something that has been offset by strong trading income,” David Vaamonde, bank analyst from MainFirst Bank, said today by phone. Trading income increased 86 percent from the previous quarter to 952 million euros. Source: www.bloomberg.com

Nearly a fifth to miss out on new full state pension
Nearly one in five (18%) adults do not believe they will qualify for the full flat rate State Pension of £155 a week, which is due to come into effect on 6 April 2016, according to new research from Prudential. Twenty one% of women believe they will miss out, compared with 14% of men. This gender difference means that women think they are less likely to make the equivalent of the 35 years of National Insurance contributions needed to qualify. Nearly half (49%) of those who think they will miss out believe they will do so as a result of taking career breaks to raise children, although 20% say they will not meet the target due to long-term illness. However, for those who fail to clock-up the necessary 35 years in employment, additional years can be bought in voluntary contributions, or can be credited to those who receive Jobseeker’s Allowance or Employment and Support Allowance. People who claim child benefit for children under the age of 12, those who are unable to work through illness, and carers can also claim added years. The research found that only 14% of adults who believe they won’t reach 35 years in employment will make voluntary additional NI contributions, to ensure they qualify for the full State Pension. Prudential’s research was conducted among people born after 6 April 1950 and found that 27% of those aged 55-plus were not aware of the State Pension reforms. This figure rises to 53%, among the total adult population. There is also confusion around how much the new State Pension will be
worth. On average, those surveyed believe it will be worth £125 a week, compared with the actual £155 a week, although one in nine (11%) thought it would be £170 a week. Tim Fassam, pensions policy expert at Prudential, said: “The launch of the flat rate State Pension in April 2016 is designed, in part, to make it easier for people to understand how much they will receive from the State, in turn enabling them to better plan for their retirements. “But inevitably, due to the changes to the rules on eligibility, there will still be differences in what people receive. It is therefore important for everyone to obtain all the relevant information so that they can make an informed decision, if they need to make up additional qualifying years through working longer or making voluntary contributions. “However, people should not rely on the State Pension alone. Saving as much as possible as early as possible in your working life, and seeking professional financial advice in the run-up to retirement, will help to ensure that you are best placed to make the most of your savings when you’re ready to stop working.” Prudential’s research found that more than two thirds (67%) of adults expect to have worked for at least 35 years by the time they retire. Women believe they are less likely than men to reach this milestone, with 61% believing they will reach 35 years, compared with 74% of men. Source: www. financialreporter.co.uk

“Lend me a Tenor”
The Luvvies were formed 10 years ago by a small but enthusiastic group to provide the first English language theatre group in the area. Over the years the Luvvies have mounted a wide variety of plays, including such classics as “Hobson’s Choice”, “London Suite”, and last year the incredibly successful “Calendar Girls”. The Luvvies are now celebrating their Tenth Anniversary with a production of the hilarious comedy “Lend Me a Tenor” by Ken Ludwig. The play has been produced in both the West End and on Broadway and received nine Tony Award nominations and won for Best Actor and Best Director. The play features a mad Italian opera singer – “Il Stupendo” - a jealous wife – a mistaken death – a standin, and becomes a real door-slamming farce when Il Stupendo and his stand-in, dressed alike, are continually mistaken for each other. As in all successful farces – all’s well that ends well – the Opera goes ahead and the wife realises her true love. “Lend me a Tenor” will be at the Teatro Pedro Gilabert in Arboleas (now complete with heating for the colder evenings!) on November 21, 22 and 23rd. Friday and Saturday are evening performances (doors open 7 for 7:30 curtain up – Sunday matinee 2:30 for 3 curtain up). Tickets are available in a wide number of outlets in Albox, Arboleas and Huercal Overa – and on the door. Bar and refreshments to be provided by the FACE charity group. Ticket prices have been held at just €7.50 for the sixth year in a row. For more information see our advertisement in this newspaper or contact us: www.theluvvies.com, info@ theluvvies.com, Tel 634 346 309

With Remitroot flowing to the four corners of the world once more, Alqueria was again in equilibrium. A state of affairs which allowed the Pueblo to feel at ease with itself, comfortable with its past, satisfied with the present, and certain of its future. This high powered inertia produced a stupor of contentment among the folk of the Village. They reverted to the natural order of everyday life. The familiar ways returned and with them brought an acceptable reality. Manuela, the Hill People’s champion and femme fatale began once more to organise the chaos which is Barrio rivalry. This is however a part-time occupation. Her main aim in life is her tireless pursuit of the male population of Alqueria, the surrounding villages and the Iberian Continent in general. Loco Paco was once more seen on the streets with his pet Saharan Dung Beetle, Benjy trotting by his side. While walking he would converse intently with his five foot tall imaginary rodent friend Bert. Blythe Gruntmore, the resident Englishman again roamed the Village trying to find someone to understand his unfathomable Geordie accented Spanish. Normality returned. The ‘Alquerian Pastime’, as it has been dubbed by journalists and politicians began to occupy the thoughts of the more partisan among the community. Barrio rivalry was once more on the agenda. With the Remitroot harvest safely gathered in, the Hill People are free from all work and occupy themselves with making life a misery for the inhabitants of the Newcomer’s Barrio. The two Barrios revelled in their hatred for each other, the natural state

of affairs. The westerly Barrio of the Hill People was abuzz with activity as plots were hatched in the Bar La Casa Devante. These were initially reasonable, achievable and disruptive plots aimed at annoying the occupants of the opposing Newcomer’s eastern Barrio. As more and more Remitroot whisky became consumed so these plots became more and more fantastic and potentially more and more deadly. Finally as the conspirators collapse into untidy heaps, like so many sacks of crumpled laundry the plots are lost forever in alcohol induced amnesia. Previous plots ranged from introducing snails into the gardens of the Newcomers during the Dia del Patios competition to firebombing the ‘Peña de los Jefes’. Damage ranged from a few chewed plants to the apocalyptic wasteland which was once the Peña. With no Remitroot income the prospect of having to do a proper days work caused panic, sweat and perspiration among the populace of Alqueria. The restored stability and the renewed Remitroot cash-flow was gratefully received. The first foray into enemy territory which is the Newcomer’s Barrio lay waiting, ready to be launched. A new era of civil unrest was about to be unleashed.
It’s just not right! It’s more than a dog can be expected to put up with! I really don’t know how I manage to tolerate the situation. And it’s getting worse. That cat simply swanned in and announced, all high and mighty, that she was staying, and if I didn’t like it I could lump it. Then if that wasn’t bad enough, the next day she brought along this kitten, (well, two kittens actually, but the fox saw to one of them,) and told me point blank that if I so much as looked sideways at the kitten, she would have my guts for garters. Now that is not natural – dogs are supposed to chase cats, and kittens should be properly educated to understand this from a young age. I did point out to her that she is going against the time honoured laws of domesticated animals, where dogs are Number 1, and cats get chased, but she has a way of put ting t h i n g s that make me doubt my own convictions, and before I knew it I’d josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk agreed with

her. Her attitude has ruined that kitten. It struts around the house as if it owned the place. And should we meet in a doorway, it fluffs up its tail, and demands that I pull back! I mean, me make way for a kitten! Whatever next? I’ll tell you what’s next! They’ve started buying things for those cats. I don’t mean ordinary things, like food, though I don’t see why cats should get two meals a day, and as much as they want, while I have to survive one just one teeny weeny little teaspoonful of a meal, ‘because you’re getting fat, Lucy.’ So what? I like fat. No, they’ve been out and bought a bed with a cushion in it, a sort of hemp scratchy thing with a felt mouse on a spring, and a Cat Toilet. A Cat Toilet! I ask you! It’s even got a roof on it, ‘so that they don’t get wet if it rains.’ What about the dog? Does anyone care if the dog gets wet if it rains? No! It’s ‘Come on Lucy, a little bit of rain never hurt anyone.’ I beg to differ – I am a Spanish dog: Spanish dogs don’t do rain, so there! But I must admit – I’m getting a lot of extra attention. And a new soft padded furry blanket for my bed. Which I fully deserve, after all I’ve had to put up with!
Rolls-Royce to cut 2,600 jobs
Engineering group Rolls-Royce has said it is planning to cut 2,600 jobs over the next 18 months. It said most of the jobs would go in its aerospace division, with most of the posts being shed in 2015. It is not clear where the cuts will be made from Rolls-Royce’s global workforce of 55,000, 24,000 of whom are in the UK. However, the Unite union told the BBC there would be 800-1200 engineering jobs cut in Derby and Bristol. Rolls-Royce also said Finance Director Mark Morris leaves after 27 years with the firm and would be replaced by David Smith, who is promoted from finance director of the Aerospace division. The company’s chief executive John Rishton said: “The measures announced today will not be the last, however they will contribute towards Rolls-Royce becoming a stronger and more profitable company.” Last month, Rolls warned that its underlying revenues for 2014 would be 3.5-to-4% lower than expected. Unite’s national officer Ian Waddell said: “Rolls-Royce is in danger of making decisions in the short term that it will later regret. This is a bitter blow to a proud workforce and we will be doing everything we can to fight for jobs and skills.” The company said voluntary redundancy would be offered, although it could not rule out compulsory redundancies. Today’s announcement on job losses is likely to be the start of a series on cutting costs for Rolls Royce. After a profits warning in February
and October, the company is under pressure to act. Aviation - where these job losses are - has not been as affected by the economic downturn and Russian sanctions as Rolls Royce’s land and sea businesses, and those divisions will now be under scrutiny. Company sources say that the aviation losses are more closely linked to a general cut in global defence spending, greater productivity after investment in new factories and an end of the development phase of the new Airbus A350 and Dreamliner engines. Those with good knowledge of the company have told me that the 2,600 job losses will be split between civil and defence aviation in the UK and the US, with twothirds of the losses coming in the UK. The business hopes that all the losses will be voluntary and the process will be largely completed this year and into the first half of 2015. The company’s UK staff are employed at four locations in the East Midlands, as well as 1,500 at five sites in the North West and 2,400 employees at six locations across Scotland. A Scottish Enterprise spokeswoman said: “We have been in contact with Rolls-Royce, and at this stage there is no impact on the Scottish operations.” The two largest sites are in Bristol and Derby. The company said it had become more efficient, and cited the fact a large engineering team, needed for the development phase of two Trent engines, were no longer needed as both these were now in production. That would point to job
losses in Derby, where the Trent engines, used by many international airlines, are built. Rolls-Royce is the second largest aero-engine maker in the world. It has customers in more than 120 countries, including more than 380 airlines and leasing firms, 160 armed forces, 4,000 marine customers including 70 navies, and 1,600 energy and nuclear customers. Rolls-Royce said the job losses would cost it £120m over the next two years, but would bring “annual cost benefits” of £80m once implemented. A statement from the Department for Business said: “We have consistently supported Rolls-Royce in the UK and will continue to work with them and local partners to support those affected - for example the Talent Retention Solution matches engineering talent with new job opportunities.” Source: www.express.co.uk

Is the Fur Flying?
Most dogs shed their coat twice a year, in Spring and Autumn, and the autumn shed is upon us once again. The best way to combat this fur-all-over-everything phenomenon is to give your dog a really goodskin-

the winter than it needs to be.
Your grooming efforts will not only do a wonderful job ofgetting all the dead coat out, but will also stimulate the skin to grow a healthy coat for the winter.
However, if you think yourself lucky to have a dog with a hair, as opposed to a fur, coat, and as such it will never need grooming, then think again!
It is essential to remove the dead coat before the cold weather sets in since any left over dead coat will actually make it more difficult for your dog to keep itself warm in the winter months.
Hair breeds like Poodles, Bichons and Yorkies need constant brushing and regular grooming during the entire year, especially in the winter.
A dog keeps itself warm or cool by regulating the layer of air that sits between the skin and the coat. If the dead fur remains on the dog, it clogs that layer of air and prevents the dog from properly warming or cooling itself, thereby reducing it’s ability to keep warm in the winter. So, if the fur is not removed, the dog will actually be Offer a Warm, colder in
These types of dogs don’t shed like a double coated dog. Instead, the hair that they shed gets caught up in the healthy hair and tangles up, causing matting of the coat.

When this happens, the mats pull on the skin and can cause a sore under the mat. It also traps moisture, keeping the dog’s skin constantly damp. And we all know how uncomfortable it is to go outside in the winter with damp hair - It’s just really hard to stay warm. The same thing holds true for dogs.
