Hologram Hugh woos in first ever virtual junket

Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman discussed his latest film in Madrid over the weekend in the world's first ever holographic press conference, which could revolutionize the film industry in austerity hit countries. http://i1.wp.com/

After seven years of crippling economic crisis, you would not blame Spain for trying to save a few euros here and there, which is what it did recently by inviting Hollywood heart throb Hugh Jackman to Madrid over the weekend – in virtual form. There was no first class plane ticket, no five-star hotel and no extravagant rider. Instead, the Australian actor was beamed live to Spain’s capital from Berlin as a hologram, to discuss his new film Chappie, with the film’s director Neill Blomkamp. Sony pictures Spain revealed it was the first time ever a ‘holographic press conference’ had taken place, something which could surely revolutionize film publicity in these belt-tightening films for the Spanish film industry. The stunt was a “stomping success”, according to US entertainment magazine, Variety, who described how the Aussie actor and South African director “came over loud and clear”. “Chappie is a film of action, of relations, but also highly technological. So we wanted to do something which was innovative and nonconventional, the first holographic press conference in the history of cinema,” said Ivan Losada, director general of Sony Pictures Releasing de España. Chappie tells the story of an experimental robot who is taught to learn and feel by its inventor (Dev Patel). Jackman plays Vincent, “a corrupt policeman, piloting his own destructive monster-droid and hell bent on destroying Chappie”, according to Variety.

Could the popularity of holograms mean Hollywood stars will no longer have to travel the world on months-long press junkets? Jackman hopes not: “I’m a little worried that studios will say ‘This is so much easier than having Hollywood divas travelling around’. As a kid I used to have a map of the world next to my bed. Not rock stars. As cool as holograms are, I really don’t want to stop travelling.” But the new technology could come as a blessing for the Spanish film industry, which has suffered crippling losses since the beginning of the crisis, meaning many Hollywood stars now skip the country when publicizing their films abroad. The economic crisis has had a crippling effect on Spain’s film industry - in 2013 box-office takings were recorded at their lowest ever, setting a grim record for Spain. “We are in a state of panic,” Pedro Pérez, the president of the Spanish film producers association (FAPAE) told newspaper, El País, at the time. Spanish cinema goers have also been turned off by rising ticket prices, which have nearly doubled in price in the last decade in part because of the rise in VAT from 8 percent to 21 percent. But with the introduction of holograms, maybe Hollywood’s finest will grace Spanish press conferences once more, just this time from the comfort of their own homes.

Dogs killed at The Dog House Foundation Urcal during high winds.

Paul Tighe who now runs The Dog House alone was devastated when, due to the recent high winds 4 dogs died as their shelters collapsed. Volunteers had only just erected the shelters; however they were demolished due to the high winds. Mr Tighe has been running the shelter for abandoned dogs for 15 years and gained registered charity status in 2009. In his time at the Dog House he has found new homes for over 1000 dogs. He is very short of cash due to the financial problem in the country, and now due to the high winds the dogs have very little shelter. The volunteers had erected the shelters enabling the dogs to be kept warm and dry at night. However the shelters were not sturdy enough to withstand the high winds. He now needs a large cash injection or a builder’s merchant to help with proper shelters for the dogs. He needs cement bricks or breeze blocks, and a covering for the roof, perhaps corrugated steel to be donated. He has a few willing friends who would help to erect the shelters but very little money. He also need money for food and vet bills. In the past few days he has managed to find homes for 6 of the dogs, but 5 puppies have been dumped on his door step so he now has 63 dogs. Paul is very grateful to The ladies of Terreros who have been very generous. The pétanque players in Terreros, Harmoney group, and also large contribution of food from friends of The Dog House in Cucador and surrounding area. Can anyone help with donations or with builder’s supplies? These dogs need shelter and money for food and vet bills. They also need a good permanent home. Please help. South Korean Camino de Santiago pilgrims rescued after getting lost in snow

who finally called the central emergency centre in the early hours of this morning to say the walkers had been found and taken to the inn they were heading for in Roncesvalles, and that they were all in a good state of health.

THREE South Koreans who became lost in the snow last night (Sunday) on the Santiago pilgrimage walk have been found safe and well at their intended destination. The 112 emergency hotline in the landlocked northern region of Navarra received a call from them at 17.00hrs to say they had set off from Saint Jean de Pied du Port in southern France and were heading for the pilgrims' lodge in Roncesvalles, Navarra, but had got lost in the mountains. They did not speak Spanish and had very little English, and were unable to give details of their possible location as they did not know the area. As a result, a search party had to be sent out working on the very limited information they had to hand. When rescue workers tried to call them again on several occasions, their mobile phone had no signal. Firefighters from Burguete, the Foral (regional) police's environmental unit, the Guardia Civil and the volunteer fire brigade from Valcarlos combed the official pilgrims' trail and a wide area around it until gone 00.30hrs this morning, to no avail. The Puerto de Ibañeta area was covered in deep snow, making the hunt even more difficult. It was the Guardia Civil's Mountain Rescue Group

The Camino de Santiago - a Mediaeval pilgrims' route which the faithful followed every year on foot to rend homage to Saint James, or San Diego, at the cathedral built in his honour in the capital city of the province of A Coruña, is now a popular cross-border tourist trail. Starting points are found in France and all over Spain, and to gain a certificate showing that the pilgrims have 'completed' the Camino, an official route of at least 100 kilometres has to be taken. Most undertake it on foot, but some go by bike or on horseback, and inns along the way offering food and rooms at reduced prices and where travellers can get their 'Camino card' stamped to prove they have completed that section of the route are dotted along the way. Some continue on past the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, in the north-western region of Galicia, to the lighthouse town of Finisterre, mainland Spain's westernmost point. Once a religious undertaking - the Catholic answer to the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca - the Camino de Santiago is now a popular form of outdoor tourism which attracts visitors year-round from every continent, often as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

Cortijo Grande’s new ‘Jewell in the Crown’

By Tony Matthews Six years ago, La Finca Listonero was severely damaged by a raging fire that swept through the picturesque valley of Cortijo Grande. But now it’s one of the finest restaurants/hotels in the area, as far as I am concerned! Over the last four years, British owners Ian and Sandra McIlroy have completely transformed the property which now has nine double rooms available. The restaurant can seat 42 diners; there’s an outside patio and a swimming pool. Head chef Malcolm prepares some superb dishes, using local produce; his menu changes regularly and vegetarians are catered for. Until Easter, the La Finca Listonero restaurant is only open on Thursday and Friday evenings and on Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes. But hopefully when the summer arrives, these times will change. Please venture over and view this fabulous rural retreat sooner rather than later… you won’t be disappointed. Tel. (0034) 950 982 045 Email: fincalistonero@gmail.com

Raise green taxes, Spain told by OECD

http://www.markelredondo.com/

Spain needs to do more to protect the environment, including scrapping harmful subsidies, according to a new report.

The report, released on Monday, March 2nd, by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), gives 28 recommendations on how Spain could be more environmentally friendly. While the report praised Spain on improving its environmental performance since the turn of the century, it underlined that there was still plenty of work to be done. "There is scope to both strengthen and simplify environmental policies to achieve growth that is robust, inclusive and green," said OECD secretarygeneral, Angel Gurría. It suggests that Spain could do more to simplify and streamline its, often complicated, environmental regulations as "its complex rules and decentralised management still create heavy green tape burdens on firms", according to the report. The report points out that green tax revenue in Spain has fallen to among the lowest in Europe at 1.6 percent of GDP in 2012, while labour taxes have risen. The report supports the idea of a reform to broaden and raise environmental taxes: “raising the diesel tax in line with the petrol tax, for example, could help preserve the environment.”

Biodiversity The report also reveals that, while around 29 percent of Spain’s land has some form of nature protection, the conservation status of around 40 percent of habitats and species is “relatively unfavourable”. “The transformation of land for the construction of tourism and transport infrastructure” has contributed to putting Spain’s nature at risk, the report warns, pointing to Spain’s building boom in the early to mid-2000s. Spain is home to more than 550 at-risk species, by far the highest number in Europe, the latest Red List from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature recently revealed. The Iberian lynx, the Mediterranean monk seal and the European mink are just three of the hundreds of endangered species in Spain. It is not all bad news, however. The report also points out that Spain generates 20 percent less CO2 per unit of GDP than in 2000 “due to the rise in renewable energies and stricter energy efficiency”. Read more:thelocal.com

Almanzora Valley Holds First Wine Festival

Martin Shortland The Almanzora Valley has historically been known as a land of mining. The region was first mined by the Romans, but in the late 18th and early19th Century, when improved techniques made the extraction of ore and minerals easier, the valley became one of the most productive in Spain. Of course, agriculture has played an important role in its economic and social development, however in the last 30 years, this area has also become a land of vineyards. And in order to promote Almanzora wine, the local growers association is holding the first ever Festival of Wine, to be held in Seron this coming Saturday, 7th March. Event organiser Miguel Sanchez Leon says the event has been created, ‘with the intention of showing the great possibilities offered by the cultivation of the vine in a corner of the Mediterranean ideal for the making of wine.’ He added, ‘Wine making has always been looked upon as an older persons occupation, but we are trying to encourage younger people who live in the valley to look upon it as a career opportunity.’ He said that the lifeblood of any industry is the employment of the next generation and it is even more so in wine making and agriculture in general, he said, ‘we’ve seen a big drop in the number farms and smallholdings in the last twenty years and if the traditions of using the land are to continue, then we must encourage young people to take it up as a career.’ The culmination of the Festival will be a wine contest, held a six o’clock, with four categories being judged by a jury of professional winemakers from across Andalucia. Needless to say, no wine festival would be worth its salt if there wasn’t food and music involved. The Seron municipal band will be playing as well as the Lorena Alvarez group: a supper of sausage, rice and ham will be available at a minimal cost. Mr Leon said it was important time for the wine industry, as many of the older vineyards had been lost and planting new ones inevitably took time and money. A newly planted vineyard takes about ten years before it begins to produce good quality grapes and he was pleased to report that in the last ten years, thousands of hectares of land have been planted. The new vines have already begun to produce wine and the quality of that wine will increase over the years. This is why the association wants to encourage young people to become involved in the growing of vines and the production of wine, as he pointed out, ‘It’s truly a job for life.’ He emphasised that similar events take place all the time across Spain and that he hoped this would become not only a popuplar local festival, but one visited by people from across Andalucia. The event is being jointly sponsored by the City Council and the local Agri-Food companies collective.

A web of lies spun by a Spanish actress has been revealed after a photograph supposedly showing her on the Oscars red carpet was exposed as a fake - reportedly photoshopped by the actress herself. Anna Allen, who appeared in Spanish television series Cuéntame cómo pasó (Tell me how it happened) published the photograph across social media with the caption “Happy to be at the 86th Oscars”. But Spanish newspaper, El Mundo, who spoke to the actress after the Oscars ceremony, or so they thought, was the first to break the news that she had not, in fact, been at the Academy Awards. “I’m surprised how many people work on the Oscars,” she said, adding that she had spoken to Oscars host Neil Patrick Harris “for a good while”. Reports in Spanish media say the actress’ representatives were keen for the media to interview her after her Oscars appearance, as she was one of only two Spanish actors to have attended the ceremony.

Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day came into existence. Today the festival of Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honour their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well wisher. The earliest history of Mothers Day dates back to the ancient annual spring festival the Greeks dedicated to maternal goddesses. The Greeks used the occasion to honour Rhea, wife of Cronus and the mother of many deities of Greek mythology. Ancient Romans, too, celebrated a spring festival, called Hilaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother goddess. It may be noted that ceremonies in honour of Cybele began some 250 years before Christ was born. The celebration made on the Ides of March by making offerings in the temple of Cybele lasted for three days and included parades, games and masquerades. The celebrations were notorious enough that followers of Cybele were banished from Rome. Early Christians celebrated a Mother's Day of sorts during the festival on the fourth Sunday of Lent in honour of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of Christ. In England the holiday was expanded to include all mothers. It was then called Mothering Sunday. The more recent history of Mothers Day dates back to 1600s in England. Here Mothering Sunday was celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter) to honour mothers. After a prayer service in church to honour Virgin Mary, children brought gifts and flowers to pay tribute to their own mothers. On the occasion, servants, apprentices and other employees staying away from their homes were encouraged by their employers to visit their mothers and honour them. Traditionally children brought with them gifts and a special fruit cake or fruit-filled pastry called a Simnel. Yugoslavs and people in other nations have observed similar days. Custom of celebrating Mothering Sunday died out almost completely Jenni Rock by the 19th century. Normally our temperatures range from 35 down to minus one or two but on the coast this would be 38 down to 2 degrees. Our land faces south and has long hours of sunshine all year round but just 800 metres away properties on the north facing slopes of the valley have few hours sunshine and very heavy frosts every winter. Re rain we have had just 400 mm of rain in a year up to 650 mm in a day in November 1996.

Sometimes, fruit flies hitch a ride into your home on fruits or vegetables. Fruit flies lay eggs on the skin of very ripe or fermenting fruit. Those bananas you brought home from the grocery store may already harbor a new generation of fruit flies. If you let your tomatoes over ripen on the vine before picking them, you may be harvesting fruit fly eggs along with your crop. Unrefrigerated fruit, whether its on display in the grocery store, still in the garden, or sitting in a bowl on your kitchen table, may attract fruit flies. Fruit flies have notoriously fast life cycles; they can go from egg to adult in just 8 days. That means one overly ripe tomato left unused on your counter can give rise to a small fruit fly swarm within a week. Fruit flies are also known for their persistence once indoors. They don’t even need fruit to keep reproducing. I was having to use strong painkillers, was unable to sleep and had breathing and digestive problems. Audrey-Gail was recommended to me for the Emmett and Bowen Technique by friends who were very pleased with their own treatments. After one treatment there was a noticeable improvement in all aspects. After a further four treatments I did not need to use my stick any more and my general health had improved significantly. During March AudreyGail is offering treatments at a reduced rate of 25 euros HOMEOPATHY, what is it? Homeopathy is an alternative form of medicine and has been in use for over two hundred years worldwide. The principle of homeopathy is 'like cures like'. This means that a substance that can produce symptoms of disease in a healthy person can cure the same symptoms in a sick person when given in a minute and diluted dose.

SOLTIMES MARCH 2015

www.soltimes.com How does it work? A homeopath understands that symptoms of illness are evidence of the body's natural and automatic efforts to heal itself and these clues are used to guide them to prescribe for that individual patient, not merely for his or her disease but the person's whole state. A homeopathic remedy acts as a signal which stimulates the body's immune system, mobilising the defence systems and working on the mental, emotional and physical aspects of the body. What homeopathy can do for you. It can successfully treat virtually every form of illness and may be used as a complement to conventional medicine. Case Histories. A. from Turre: M, 4years old, had started to wet the bed again and was showing signs of being unhappy. M was given her constitutional remedy and her Mum said, 'Within two days M was more like herself and now no longer wets the bed'. T. from Mojacar writes, 'My son has been treated by Audrey-Gail since birth. He always recovers quickly from any illnesses and I have never had to resort to using antibiotics'. A.from Vera: When my Father died I developed asthma and was using inhalers regularly. After only two months of homeopathic treatment with Audrey-Gail my asthma disappeared and my GP gradually stopped my medication. Illness doesn't exist in isolation, but is a reflection of how the whole person is coping with stress. Homeopaths look beyond the disease name to the whole person, including the stress or stresses that preceded the development of the symptoms. Audrey-Gail was suffering recurring nightmares, depression, and a severe physical reaction of psoriasis from head to toe after a frightening trauma in a Jewellers. Conventional medicines were not alleviating any of these symptoms, so she booked an appointment with a homeopath and talked about her symptoms and emotional trauma. Audrey-Gail was given a remedy for shock and within a short period of time her depression lifted, quickly followed by a change in her physical symptoms. That was over 20 years ago and Audrey-Gail has not looked back since. She went on to study Homeopathy for four years at the Northern College of Homeopathic Medicine in Newcastle. Audrey-Gail acted as a student adviser and clinical inspector for Homeopaths applying for registration. Audrey-Gail completed a two year post graduate course with Dr A.U. SOLTIMES MARCH 2015

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last time we started to discuss music or to be more accurate the difference between digital and analogue music. Today I am going to complete the article with a look at the pro’s and con’s of the different music formats. What are the music formats that are available? This list is not exhaustive but covers most of the most popular formats. MP3 was designed by the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG) and was originally in the MPEG 1 format, the latest and best incarnation is the MPEG 2.5 compression format, and are ‘Lossy’ formats that reduces the file to about 10% of its original size. See last weeks article on the difference between ‘Lossy’ and ‘Lossless’ formats, It is currently the most popular but is being closely followed by the AAC format. AAC or Advanced Audio Coding uses the MPEG 4 technology to produce a better quality sound using the same number of bits. This format is usually hidden behind the following file extensions:.m4a,.m4b,.m4p,.m4v,.m4r,.3gp,. mp4,.aac. These will be found on Apple, Xbox (Mircosoft) and Youtube. Musepack or MPC (formerly known as MPEGplus, MPEG+ or MP+) is an open source lossy audio codec, specifically optimized for transparent compression of stereo audio at bitrates of 160–180 kbit/s. OGG and ‘OGG Vorbis’ are names for a free and open-source replacement for patented and restricted formats like MP3. The Vorbis format has proven popular among supporters of free software. They argue that its higher fidelity and completely and patents free, make it a superb replacement for the MP3 format. FLAC (Fully Lossless Audio Codec) is an open source format with royalty-free licensing and is free software. FLAC has support for metadata tagging (artist, album, album cover art, etc) and fast seeking. Being Lossless you get the highest quality digital sound and Digital audio compressed by FLAC’s algorithm can typically be reduced to 50–60% of its original size! When decompressed and played back it is an

identical copy of the original audio data! Far superior to any Lossy format! The Grandad of many of the audio formats is the WAV format. It is the standard audio file container format used mainly in Windows PCs. Commonly used for storing uncompressed (PCM), CD-quality sound files, which means that they can be large in size—around 10MB per minute. Wave files can also contain data encoded with a variety of (lossy) codecs to reduce the file size (for example the GSM or MP3 formats). Finally the next generation from WAV is the WMA (Windows Media Audio) format. Windows Media Audio (WMA) is an audio data compression technology developed by Microsoft. It is a proprietary technology that forms part of the Windows Media framework. WMA consists of four distinct codecs. The original WMA codec, known simply as WMA, was conceived as a competitor to the popular MP3 and RealAudio codecs. WMA Pro, a newer and more advanced codec, supports multichannel and high resolution audio. A lossless codec, WMA Lossless, compresses audio data without loss of audio fidelity (the regular WMA format is lossy). WMA Voice, targeted at voice content, applies compression using a range of low bit rates. It sounds like the perfect and complete solution to all of our audio needs BUT it supports digital rights management (DRM) using a combination of elliptic curve cryptography key exchange, DES block cipher, a custom block cipher, RC4 stream cipher and the SHA-1 hashing function. That is a lot of encryption to ensure that you can’t copy it from one computer to another and can’t make a permanent CD copy for your home! That is an argument for another day :-) Contact me for free advice concerning your computer or tablet at the address or phone number below.

Memories on wheels

30 years ago I started a game keeping apprenticeship. The only problem was that it meant a daily18.5 mile each way cycle ride. So I bought an ancient Honda C90 scooter and what an evil contraption it was. It belched out black smoke and I never got my teenage head around the semiautomatic clutch, too many times I ended up crashing into things as the darn thing just would not stop. Once I bashed into a car and was mortified, the guy just shrugged and reassured me that our insurance would sort it out. The very nice man never even bothered claiming for it. Luckily before the C90 could do me or the environment any more damage it blew up on the A25 in Albury near Guildford and I remember pushing it the three miles up and over the North Downs to home where it was laid to rest. At this point my dear Gran stepped in buying me a proper motorbike and helmet to match; a Honda CB100 costing her the then

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you maybe exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or

property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENTOF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. Spain: Never again 2nd league

As belligerent the “Royals” are, as victorious they are returning home. No matter if Primera División or Champions League – Madrid is on the front. We will see how much fighting spirit the people of Madrid or also the Catalans will bring aling from the football stadium to the MIPIM. One thing is for sure, though: There is something going on in the Spanish capital as well as in Barcelona regarding properties. First-class office objects in Madrid belong to the top-performers in Europe in the coming 5 years according to the recently published magazine “Perspektive 2015“ of the German Bank. Well then, go in and win, torero! But what is really true about the recovery of the Spanish real estate market? The so-called “recovery” can be mainly explained through the dramatic decrease of the property values and the thus resulting ideal access point that especially Anglo-Saxon investors are taking advantage of since 2013, Dr. Thomas Beyerle, Catella’s chief researcher, is relativizing the euphoria a little bit. Also cautiously optimistic is EMEA-researcher Hela Hinrichs from JLL. The way is still long and stoney in case of doubt, but the Spanish real estate market has regained its composure in 2014. “The rents are increasing, especially seen clearly in the retail in the last 12 months, where the top-rents in prime locations have increased by 15% in Madrid and almost 14% in Barcelona.” Furthermore, the expert is expecting another market recovery in the close future with rising rents and prices in the office sector. Actually, national and international investors are on a razzia, for example the Spanish KKH Capital & Property, that wants to invest

€500 million in Madrid, Barcelona and Lisbon together with the US-Private Equity Fonds Perella Weinberg. The jointventure had already been active in the summer of 2014 and had acquired the former headquarters of the German Bank in Barcelona for €90 million, to convert it into a luxury hotel. However, as luring the current situation might be, SEB-chairman Barbara Knoflach does also see the dangers: “Regarding the revived project development actions, investments in Spain might remain risky.” There is no real difference here between the real estate business and the football business: you only see if the purchased stars are scoring goals when they are playing. http://www.property-magazine.eu/

Election: Polling day

Campaigning door to door in Alqueria may require persuasion, tact and a strong political platform but some form of military training would also be an advantage. The only really safe way is to canvass on the doorsteps of those already converted to your cause. This may seem a bit pointless, but it is at least safe. Supporters of rival parties and the apathetic majority are likely to greet unannounced political pollsters with verbal and often physical abuse. Rodriquez only associated with his own followers and consequently thought the whole world was behind him. He became completely out of touch with the feelings and aspirations of the ordinary citizen, a failing common to most of today’s politicians. Manuela and her B.O.N.K. party however were conscious of the need to win voters from opposition parties. Manuela had, using her undoubted charm and expertise in certain areas recruited several of the younger and fitter men from the ranks of Rodriquez’s V.I.L.E. Party. A number of older V.I.L.E. supporters had been won over with liberal quantities of Remitroot Whisky. The trick would be to keep them in a state of intoxication until they had polled in favour of B.O.N.K. Then the Whisky supply would dry up and the erstwhile voters left in a state of ‘cold turkey’. Loco Paco, leader of the D.A.F.T. party didn’t bother to canvass at all. He didn’t quite grasp the situation or the electoral process, in fact he didn’t even know what day it was. But he was happy in his own little comfortable world, a world of singing dung beetles and dancing rodents. Public debates in the Village Square

were an interesting s p e c t a c le. The three p a r t y leaders stood on a makeshif t platform st aring down at a belligerent partisan crowd. Rodriquez assumed the assembled mass was there to back him and his egotistical arrogant policies. His V.I.L.E. party is nothing more than a personality cult. Manuela poured forth an erudite and persuasive speech praising the virtues of an anarchistic society. Her vision is a land where sexual freedom and cheap Remitroot Whisky are universal. Universal that is, not compulsory. Loco Paco for his part tried to catch imaginary dragonflies. Jeers, hoorays and blunt projectiles flew through the rarefied Alqueria air. The ‘politicians’ dived for cover, all except for Loco Paco. He was totally engrossed in catching one particularly evasive but imaginary dragonfly. The run up to any election is short in Alqueria. This avoided serious physical damage to the Village and limited civil unrest. Polling day duly arrived and a crowd gathered outside the Bar La Casa Devante where the ballot boxes sat expectantly. We shall watch the vote closely, analyse the exit poll and wait for the final count.

Entry or Exit Since we have become a 3 animal household I’m beginning to feel the strain - I have become an unpaid and unappreciated doorwoman. Lucy, The Dog That Is Not Ours, has always been exacting in her door demands. She will gaze wistfully at the door in question for a few seconds before raising a polite paw and giving it a gentle scratch. If this doesn’t produce a fairly instant response, she throws manners to the wind, and goes for the unfortunate door with all the vigour of a badger digging out a new sett. At least when I have rushed to open it while there is still a shred of wood left undamaged, she will favour me with an appreciative glance and a wag of her tail as she goes upon her way. In contrast, Her Imperial Majesty, Sayyida al Hurra, Queen of Darkness, She Who Must Not Be Questioned, a.k.a. Sid, Somebody Else’s Cat, will glide up to the door, sit down in front of it and fix it with a stare so hypnotic that it all but bursts into flames. When I open it she simply sashays through – it is, after all, her divine right to have someone open the door at her command, even if that door does have a perfectly adequate catflap in it. Her kitten, Mr Tommy Fluffypants, now that he has grown from a tiny ball of kitteny fluff into a much larger ball of fluffy teenager attitude, will demonstrate his grasp of elementary engineering and applied physics by trying to

Putting The Boot In by Paul Martin

Don’t we just love to knock the rich and famous? It’s a national pastime. Whether it be politicians, footballers, film stars, rock stars or entrepreneurs, we’ll dig the knife in at any opportunity. This last week is a case in point. Lady Gaga performed what I considered to be an amazing medley of songs from ‘The Sound of Music,’ at the Oscars Award Ceremony in America. Now I’ve always been a fan of her music and I think she ticks all the boxes when it comes to being a rock star; she’s larger than life, controversial, over the top, but she can really sing, which really does help if you’re in the music business. But I never for one moment knew she could sing in the way she did at the Oscar ceremony last Saturday, and I suspect not many other people did either. Although I hate the phrase, it was a truly ‘mind blowing’ performance. Now if you’ve seen the film – who hasn’t – or better still, the stage show, (which I saw in London shortly after Connie Fisher launched the new Andrew Lloyd Webber production), then you’ll know it opens with belter, ‘Sound of Music’, a song requiring a full vocal range and a lot of skill to execute. Lady Gaga did it perfectly and went on to include three other classics from the show, all of which were beautifully sung. She received – and rightly so – a standing ovation. This woman can really sing and yet the following day, the internet was full of people criticising her, accusing her of miming, of it not being her voice and so on – how ludicrous. Julie Andrews came on stage

afterwards and it was quite a moving moment, each clearly moved by the others talent, and that’s how it should be. A few days later, at the Brits Awards in London, Madonna took a nasty fall while singing her latest song at the O2 Arena. Well again, like her or not, you have to admire her courage and professionalism for getting up and continuing the routine, I’m sure there are many who wouldn’t have managed to do that. Again I heard, and read many comments basically saying, ‘Never liked her, serves her right.’ Well how can it serve someone right, falling backwards down two high steps onto ones back, while performing live in front of a theatre and TV audience? Madonna has been the leading female vocalist for more than thirty years, so she must be doing something right. Ok, they’re just two examples from a week in which award ceremonies and celebrities have been very much in the news, but it would just be nice sometimes for some people to give a bit of credit where it’s due and not constantly find fault and criticise. None of us are perfect for heavens sake and neither is the world, but with a little more understanding and compassion, we might all see ourselves, and the world in a better light.

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk insert a paw between door and jamb and doing his best to create a cat-sized gap by levering the two apart. If this fails he will then throw himself bodily against the door in the manner of a TV cop breaking into the villain’s apartment; He has been watching far too much violent telly – I really should restrict his viewing to Antiques Roadshow, that is quite enough excitement for his impressionable young mind! The recent cold weather and rain has added another dimension to the in-out continuum. A demand to go out will be made, and I will once again cease whatever I am doing and open the door. The animal in question (generally the dog) will then gaze out at the weather, look up at me in a disappointed kind of a way, because it is obviously my fault that it is raining, before turning tail and going back to bed. What our house really needs is revolving doors!

Stolen Picasso turns up in New York

A Picasso painting that was stolen from a Paris museum has turned up in New York after being smuggled in from Belgium. La coiffeuse (The Hairdresser), painted in 1911 during the artist’s Cubist period, is worth several million dollars, but the shipping form claimed it was just worth €30. The valuable artwork, which is the property of the French state, had disappeared from a storage room at the Georges Pompidou Centre. The theft was noticed in 2001 following a loan request from another art centre. A package sent from Belgium was intercepted by US customs officials and found to contain the painting and the following content

description: “Handicraft / 30 E / Merry Christmas,” according to a New York district attorney named Loretta Lynch. La coiffeuse was sent to the Homeland Security Investigations department, which investigates international art trafficking. “A lost treasure has been found,” Lynch told AFP news agency. “Because of the blatant smuggling in this case, this painting is now subject to forfeiture to the United States. Forfeiture of the painting will extract it from the grasp of the black market in stolen art so that it can be returned to its rightful owner,” added Lynch. Elpais.com

GRITS Though now commonly used to mean "hominy grits," the term "grits" actually refers to any coarsely ground grain such as corn, oats or rice. Most grits come in a choice of grinds — coarse, medium and fine. Grits can be cooked with water or milk — usually by boiling or baking — and eaten as cereal or served as a side dish.

Film Review The Theory of Everything “To be told you are going to be dead in two years, and to be still alive now and to have done the things he’s done is absolutely amazing.”(Lisa Bruce/ Producer.) Stephen Hawking is 72. When he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease he was told the maximum life expectancy would be two years from the diagnosis. He was a PhD student in 1963. He beat the odds and probably owes his life to Jane Hawking, his first wife. He is still seeking theories of everything possible to explain our existence. Eddie Redmayne’s performance as the physicist Stephen Hawking won him his first Oscar in the Best Actor category for such an outstanding performance: “Eddie’s performance is amazing. About half-way through you forget that someone is acting.”(Bruce) It’s hard to imagine that urchin all those years ago appearing in Oliver with future aspirations to become the Artful Dodger one day. The film is based on Jane Hawking’s memoirs: “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.” Felicity Jones plays Jane, a young girl enchanted by the geeky Hawking at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1963. She is studying French and Spanish to his cosmology which he defines as being “a kind of religion for intelligent atheists.” Jane’s friend Diane isn’t very impressed with Stephen or any of the scientists frequenting the bar. He is strange, clever and goes to ban the bomb marches. Yet there must have been an attraction because in a short while he invites her to the May ball, filmed in the grounds of St John’s (which doubles for Trinity). The passionate kiss happens on Kitchen Bridge, Cambridge’s second oldest bridge. Hawking is studying for a PhD but he is initially indecisive about his area of research until he eventually

decides it will focus on time. When played by Charlie Cox who becomes he crashes to the ground, an one of the family and grows especially examination confirms the worst-a close to Jane. pause for thought

We Christians often agonise over the reasons for falling Church attendance. Many consider the Church too old-fashioned, so advocate a programme of modernisation. Others blame the lack of entertainment value, suggesting the need for more activities and attractions so Church can compete with Television, Sport, etc. Whilst yet more counsel the Church to moderate its message so as to serve a wider section of the community, being less judgemental and more tolerant of modern culture, avoiding offence by speaking no more of ‘Sin’ whilst accepting all forms of spirituality. Well call me oldfashioned and bigoted, but I strongly believe it’s these very arguments that are preventing our Churches from growing. The Church isn’t about entertaining or amusing people, but of presenting the message of an unchanging God, who despite our frequent failures to live as He requires, offers one simple means of forgiveness through the death, on our behalf of Jesus Christ. Whenever we, as Christians ‘water down’ this message by suggesting that various faults aren’t really so terrible, or that there might be some alternative method of attaining heaven, we detract from that message. We all accept advertisers showing clean items alongside grubby ones, to illustrate the cleansing power of their particular product. Without such demonstration I may well

be satisfied with a far from perfect wash. And similarly, an essential part of the Christian message is to show our lives alongside that of God’s perfect standard, exposing our failings like stains on a soiled sheet, so we may appreciate our need of cleansing. This exposure of dirt, or sin, isn’t being judgmental, as I’m no better than anyone else, but rather that we may realise just how much we need Jesus, who alone is able to clean that sin completely away. And the great value of this message we Christians should be proclaiming is that it offers certainty of life beyond the grave; so if only we were all living proof of this, then I believe our Churches would indeed be filled with people anxious to learn more. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

Shares in China remained higher on Monday after the mainland’s central bank unexpectedly cut interest rates at the weekend for the second time since November. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was up 0.1% at 24,848.39 points in afternoon trade. Meanwhile, the Shanghai Composite index was up 0.39% at 3,323.27. China’s central bank, the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), cut the benchmark one-year lending as well as the deposit rate rate by a quarter of one percent. Analysts said the PBOC’s move was aimed at warding off deflation. A leading think tank in China said that the mainland’s consumer prices inflation rate would probably increase by 1.2% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2015 - compared with 2% a year earlier - well below the government’s target of 3.5%. It also said China’s economic expansion was expected to slow to 7% in the first three months of the year, lower than the 7.3% posted for the three months to December. “Our country’s economic growth still faces relatively heavy downward pressure amid structure adjustments,” the State Information Centre think tank said in a research report. The rate cut by the PBOC on Saturday came just before official factory activity data was released on Sunday. Nicholas Teo of CMC Markets in Singapore said February’s purchasing manager’s index (PMI) data, which came in at 49.9, was better than analysts’ expectations of 49.7. January’s official data came in at

49.8. A reading of below 50 indicates manufacturing is contracting. “On Sunday, it became clear that China’s growth is still in a mode of deceleration,” Mr Teo said. “More clues [will] be offered this Thursday when the National People’s Congress meets and is scheduled to announce its growth targets for 2015.” A private report on China’s factory activity released on Monday showed PMI rising to 50.7 in February from 49.7 in January. Elsewhere in Asia, In Tokyo, the benchmark Nikkei 225 closed up 0.15% at 18,826.88 points while Australia’s benchmark S&P/ASX 200 closed up 0.51% at 5,958.88. Market watchers in Australia said the index would likely rally on Monday as investors’ expectations for a another rate cut on Tuesday continued to rise. In Korea, the Kospi share index closed up 0.55% at 1,996.81 points despite official data released on Monday showing industrial output fell 3.7% in January from a month earlier its worst fall in some six years. The decline in January follows an increase in December of 3.4%. Statistics Korea said a number of one-off factors had contributed to the January data, including holidays, and that it was not all bad news. “Without the one-off factors, January activity would have likely remained flat in monthly terms,” Statistics Korea’s Jeon Baek-geun said. “It’s difficult to say that the recovery has faltered. We will have to observe February numbers to know for sure.” Bbc.co.uk

IF YOU ARE OVER 65 AND SELL YOUR MAIN RESIDENCE YOU DO NOT PAY CAPITAL GAINS TAX Q. Please explain the situations in which a resident qualifies for nonpayment of capital gains tax. A. The first thing is to be able to prove to the notary on the day of the sale that you are in fact a Spanish tax resident. It is very important to realize that having what everyone calls the “residencia” issued by the police does not in fact prove you are a tax resident of Spain, and that if this is the only document you take to the notary to prove tax residency, the notary will consider you a non-resident and you will be subject to a 3% retention. To prove you are a tax resident your solicitor needs to request a certificate from the tax authorities, which can then be taken to the notary. If you suffer the nasty surprise of them saying that in fact you are a non-resident, you will need to get this amended by proving to them that you are a resident before they will issue you with the correct certificate for the notary. The best way to secure tax residency status is making a resident income tax declaration in Spain in June of every year. If you are going to sell shortly, request this certificate in advance to avoid

last minute surprises.

1. The possible total or partial exemption from capital gains tax due to reinvestment (roll-over): If you are a resident and sell one property to purchase another of the same or higher price you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax. To benefit you have to have been a resident for at least 3 years before the sale takes place, and you must purchase the next property within 2 years of the sale. If you are moving to a smaller property, you can claim exemption of a percentage of the capital gains tax. 2. Claim of total exemption if you are over 65 years old: If you are over 65 and sell your main home (where you must have lived for at least 3 years as a resident), you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax even if you do not reinvest. If the property is owned by a couple and one member is over 65 and the other is not, you are allowed to claim the exemption in respect of half the price.

Motoring: Honda Civic Tourer

It is possible to make a visually striking estate car and one that in my opinion looks more fetching than its hatchback equivalent. I am talking about the Honda Civic Tourer, which is a thoroughly attractive vehicle from whichever angle you care to look. The hatchback is a decent enough car but the position of the spoiler has always been an issue for me because it gets in my way obscuring my vision when looking in the rear view mirror. The Tourer doesn’t have that problem. Finished in orchid white with 17” alloy wheels this takes the estate car concept to a whole new level. Until now it was only Volvo that caught my eye in this department. The boot is massive too, easily swallowing our tandem pushchair and making it an ideal travelling companion. So we drive it to Suffolk to put it through its paces. It takes us a few hours to travel from Hampshire to Suffolk and the ride is comfortable. The driver’s seat is comfortable and supportive and it quickly becomes clear to my wife that everything on the dash is angled in the driver’s favour. She never likes this because she can’t keep an eye on what’s going on. This model is fitted with a sat nav and while it is undoubtedly useful this example is incredibly frustrating. Like a dodgy London cabby it takes us a long way round from Woodbridge, Suffolk to Ipswich added to which its female voice whispers and we cannot fathom how to make her speak up. This means that it’s really difficult to hear her above

Thursday 26th February with fair weather conditions but a very busy Aguilon course 33 members played an Individual Stableford competition. Split into two divisions and with a nice bottle of wine on each of the five Nearest the Pin holes, donated be Birthday Boy Geoff Smith, our players were led off by the Ladies Pair of Christine Edwards and Zeta Denyer. Nick Pogson nearly had an expensive day by finishing about six inches from the pin on the 3rd, but ended with a nice couple of Nearest the Pins and a Two on the 3rd. 1st Div; winner with 36 points was Mark Coffey closely followed by Nigel Greenwood on 34 with Sean Curtis in 3rd with 33. 2nd Div; was won by “The Old Codger” John Boulter with 29 points 2nd Zeta Denyer with 27 and Geoff Smith in 3rd with 23. Some good and bad scores recorded, but in all, a really good days’ golf played in good humour and in good weather. Really nice welcome

the noise of our daughters and the road. Fortunately visual directions are also provided on the dashboard display. It is surprising that this Tourer feels really quite nimble despite its very sizeable boot. During our test Caroline is invited to a 40th birthday party for one of her friends, who lives in Chatham, Kent. So we punch in the details to the sat nav and a couple of hours later we arrive. As with all cars the best efficiency is recorded at 56mph and when travelling at this speed for some hours it is possible to nudge the miles per gallon over 70. Driving like this enables us to travel from Hampshire to Suffolk and back and Suffolk to Kent and back all on the 50 litre tank of diesel with a good amount of luggage. The Tourer is certainly visually appealing and looks decidedly futuristic, which is surprising for an estate car, which so often looks the poor relation when compared to its hatchback or saloon variants. Parkers, the car experts, write: “The Honda Civic Tourer is the estate version of the capable five-door Civic hatchback. It’s relatively small on the outside – the same width and wheelbase as the regular hatch and a scant 235mm longer – but can lug an

extra 147 litres of luggage. From launch it is priced at approximately £1,000 more than the regular five-door Civic hatchback and enters a competitive market against other hatch-based estates such as the Seat Leon ST, Ford Focus estate, Vauxhall Astra Tourer and Toyota Auris Touring Sports. Although it’s not all that much longer than the hatchback model, boot capacity is the Civic Tourer’s real strength. Official boot volume is a very generous 624 litres (to the window with the seats up) – by comparison the Vauxhall Astra Tourer’s official capacity is 500 litres and the Ford Focus Estate 476 litres. With the seats down, luggage capacity increases to 1,668 litres (measured to the roofline). That figure includes a large hidden compartment under the boot floor offering nearly 120 litres, enough space for two decent sized travel bags to be stowed out of sight. That compartment disappears if you select the option of a spare wheel, however. With the 60:40-split seat backs folded downwards there’s a completely flat load area and a load length close to 1.8m.” Facts at a glance - Honda Civic Tourer 1.6 i-DTEC EX Plus Manual, New price: £27,960 - Used price: £19,000, 0-60mph: 10.5secs, Top speed: 121mph, Economy: 72mpg, Power: 120bhp. Huercal-Overa CF 3 EF Alhama 1 Back to wining ways for HuercalOvera after two defeats on the road, in front of 500 at a sunny El Hornillo last Sunday. A balanced first half saw both sides looking for the victory; the deadlock was broken by HuercalOvera top scorer Tomas Campanas in the 27th minute when he latched onto a ball through from Pichon to fire home. The visitors soon rallied after the goal Jacob forcing Isma in to a superb save low down but the teams in at 1-0 at the break. The second half couldn’t have started better for Los Rojos when Huercal Captain Pedro Lloris swept the ball home after an in-singing corner wasn’t cleared by the visitors defence. 2-0 and looking good for the home side with news filtering around that rivals Aguilas were losing at home…. The game was wrapped up by that man again Campanas, Juanma found space on the left to look up and spray the ball over to the spritely striker who got his head to it and past Raul in the Alhama net. The visitors did manage to grab a consolation goal through Blas in the final minute. HUÉRCAL-OVERA C.F.: Ismael,

Before we could start the game today, the Mighty Vicko gathered everyone around him. Balancing precariously on the shoulders of Hurricane Helen he said, “Some of you here today will know that last week I lost one of my molars, and I would be terribly, terribly grateful if you would all assist me in my search to find the missing tooth.” The dulcet tones of his Liverpool accent caressed each word making them sound like the soft beat of angel’s wings. How could we resist such a plea? It wasn`t long before all of us, players and spectators alike, were on our hands and knees in line abreast crawling down the length of the pitch, Time Team would have been proud. With his bullwhip gently lashing our bare backs the Mighty Vicko strode Godlike back and forth along the line whispering words of encouragement to us as we advanced down the pitch sifting the sacred earth through our fingers. Suddenly the cry went out. “Eureka! I found it, I found it!” With the tooth cradled carefully in his hands he ran across the pitch, prostrating himself in front of the Mighty Vicko. Beside himself with emotion Mighty Vicko accepted the tooth. Hurrah! So with wounds from the bullwhip cleaned and dressed the game could begin. Unfortunately we were reduced to three players per team, because some of them had decided to make the long pilgrimage back to Liverpool where they visited the hallowed birthplace of the Mighty Vicko. It was not long before Fiery Fred, still playing the part of Toto from last week, yapped and barked his way down the field and scored the first goal to the Coffin Dodgers. Hurrah! Incensed by this early triumph the Seizure Stoppers threw themselves into the attack, but a careless pass was

intercepted by Toto, sorry Fiery Fred and then, “Yappity, yap, yap! Barkety, Bark, BARK!” he scored his second goal only seconds before time on the first half. We had to extend half time while someone fetched a ladder to get Hurricane Helen down from the orange tree where she had been picking only the choicest fruit for the players. The second half had barely begun when Toto, sorry Fiery Fred, scored a third goal. Hurrah! In a blinding flash of astonishing play Fred De Merc, normally guardian of the goal scored an inspirational goal for the Seizure Stoppers. Hurrah! Shortly afterwards Peter Dem Bones Kelly scored again for the Seizure Stoppers, putting them only one behind. Hurrah! With a wag of his tail the dynamic Toto, sorry Fiery Fred, scored the Coffin Dodgers forth goal. Born of frustration Peter Dem Bones Kelly made an over enthusiastic tackle on Toto, sorry Fiery Fred, incurring the wrath of the Mighty Vicko. Filled with the eloquence that only he can utter, or even pronounce, Peter was forced to endure a 10 minute tirade from the Mighty Vicko! During this time poor Toto, sorry Fiery Fred, in an Oscar winning performance, could be seen rolling around the pitch in agony. The final score was 4 – 2 to the Coffin Dodgers. I must mention our “Man of the Match.” Despite the 4 goals by Fiery Fred, got it right that time. I choose none other than Fred De Merc. Not only did he leave his beloved goal to score for the Seizure Stoppers but he made some truly remarkable saves. At least twice he caught the ball between his knees, which normally are a long way apart; he also deflected the ball by throwing his stomach across the goal mouth. Amazing! Bill White.

Almería survive against Depor AGUILON GOLF MEMBERS REPORT

A 0-0 draw between two sides who are fighting for survival; the Andalusian side managed to hold back the Galician side thanks to an iron defence. An afternoon without goals at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos in the game between UD Almería and RC Deportivo. The draw leaves Almería on 24 points in 16th place. Their rivals are one place above them on 25 points in the league. The game had barely got underway when Tomer Hemed tried a daring bicycle kick that was saved by Fabricio. Almería looked bold from the start and through a large part of the first half they were the ones who looked dangerous. In the 34th minute the Galician side had two chances to take the lead; the home side soon responded through Thievy, whose shot grazed the post. A goal could have come from either side, and just before the half-time break, Julián Cuesta made a great save against Isaac Cuenca and

afterwards from Oriol Riera. The second half began with an opportunity for Juan Ignacio Martínez’ men. Following that dangerous move, Deportivo began to take control of the play and the chances, first through Borges and then through Oriol Riera, who missed a one-on-one chance against Juli,an. In addition to Deportivo’s improvement, there was the setback of Thievy’s sending off for Almería. With an extra man, Víctor Fernández’s men streamed forward into the opponents area but they came up against a solid Almería defence who are quick in the counterattack. The last few minutes of the game were frantic as another Almería player received their second yellow. The match ended as it had begun, with the score at 0-0. lfp.es
