"Little Owls" can provide a listening ear, and also help to talk through any worries a person might have. The group can provide information on local services available to those needing further help, and can also offer practical assistance in the form of shopping, ironing, and assisting people to visit hospitals or doctors. 4 British Ambassador Issues Calming Message to Expats
The British Ambassador to Spain, Simon Manley, has issued a calming video message to British Expats living in Spain following the result of the UK referendum on EU membership. In his message, the British Ambassador explains that British Expats living in Spain as well as the rest of the European Union will experience no change to their current legal status in the 28 nation bloc. Under EU treaties, any country seeking to exit the EU has a period of up to TWO YEARS to negotiate their exit terms with the rest of the EU. Complete withdrawal from the EU could take several years more as the UK and EU unwind each other from regulation and bureaucracy built up over more than 40 years of partnership. Importantly, the clock doesn’t begin ticking until formal notification has been given to the EU by the UK. Mr Manley was keen to stress that all the rights to live, work and travel in Spain as well as the rest of the EU was still the same as the day before the referendum. During the initial negotiation period, both the UK and EU continue to be bound by EU obligations, which apply to British nationals living in Spain. He also pointed out there was
no need for concerned Expats to formally change their status in Spain. However, some Expats are already beginning to feel the effects of the Brexit vote to leave the EU. Pensioners who receive their pensions in pounds/sterling have been hit hard by the sudden drop in the value of the pound against the Euro and Dollar. Whilst nowhere near as low as in 2010 when the pound hit record lows and almost reach like for like against the Euro, the sudden drop has come as a shock. Events following the Brexit vote are unfolding very quickly and those who receive their income from the UK in pounds/sterling should consult a money transfer specialist such as MoneyCorp to secure a favourable exchange rate before things deteriorate any further. “The whole unfamiliar Brexit process is beset by uncertainty” said MoneyCorp in a recent currency brief. “No country has ever exited the EU before. We should expect more downside for the pound.” Whilst so much uncertainty remains post-Brexit, Expats should take comfort from Simon Manley’s video message, but prepare, as best as possible, for any eventualities. thinkspain

Nearly 100,000 Spaniards migrated in 2015, highest figure since crisis began
New statistics also show that Spain’s population shrank for the fourth year in a row Nearly 100,000 Spaniards moved abroad last year, the highest figure since the beginning of the crisis in 2008, new statistics show. Figures released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE) show that 98,934 Spaniards left the country in 2015, a 23% rise from the previous year. Of these, 64,136 were born in Spain and 34,798 acquired Spanish citizenship later in life. There were more deaths than births last year, and more emigration than immigration The INE data also shows a slight predominance of male emigration: 52.1% of Spanish emigrants in 2015 were men. Emigrants’ main destinations last year were Britain, France, Germany, United States and Ecuador. In the latter case, the statistics show that emigrants were mostly Ecuadoreans who obtained Spanish nationality and are now returning home with their Spanish-born children. There was also a rise in the number of Spaniards returning home after a period abroad. Last year 52,227 individuals came back to Spain, representing a 27.5% rise from 2014. Comparing those who left with those who returned, there was
negative net migration of 46,707. As for foreigners who emigrated last year, most hailed from Romania, Morocco and Italy. For the first time since 2010, more foreigners arrived in Spain (291,387) than those who left (253,069), bucking a trend that began with the economic crisis and the lack of jobs. The data also shows that Spain’s population has fallen for the fourth year in a row. In 2015 there was a drop of 11,142 people, bringing the national total to 46,438,442. That was because there were more deaths than births last year, and because there was more emigration than immigration. Broken down by regions, Castilla y León lost the biggest share of population (23,209 fewer residents), followed by Asturias and Aragón. At the other end of the spectrum, the Balearic Islands added 9,648 new residents. Madrid and the Canary Islands also registered significant population growth elpais

In Madrid, Michelle Obama calls for global fight against gender inequality
US First Lady praises Spain’s Queen Letizia and tells young girls they are lucky to live in a country that gives them opportunities Speaking to a packed auditorium in Madrid, US First Lady Michelle Obama on Thursday requested a global cultural change to fight gender inequality. The event capped a threenation trip to raise awareness about the plight of millions of girls who are denied access to education across the world. Before Spain, Obama visited Liberia and Morocco to promote her Let Girls Learn campaign. The First Lady spoke inside the cultural center Matadero de Madrid, where there was a majority of young women in the crowd. Many of them were high school and university students who had waited in line since 8am for a chance to hear Obama’s speech, which she delivered at 11am. Sitting in the crowd was Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena, who gave the First Lady a necklace shaped like the Madrid skyline; acting deputy prime minister Soraya Sáez de Santamaría; the government delegate in Madrid, Concepción Dancausa; and US Ambassador James Costos. Michelle Obama said she was honored by the presence of Spain’s Queen Letizia, and reminded the women in the audience of “how lucky you are to live in a country that gives you opportunities,” noting that elsewhere in the world, “62 million talented women like yourselves lack such opportunities. That affects their own future and the future of their families and their countries.” To illustrate her point, the First Lady talked about her recent visits to Liberia and Morocco,

where she met with teenage girls who work by day and study by night to fulfill their dreams of going to college and becoming nurses, secretaries or schoolteachers. But Michelle Obama also warned that “gender inequality is not limited to developing countries” like the ones she has just visited. Although progress has been made – she noted the fact that a woman now stands a chance of becoming the next president of the United States – “those changes are not being reflected in culture.” Why Spain? In the First Lady’s travel diary, Michelle Obama wrote: “I’ll be ending my trip in Spain where I’ll be giving a speech to a group of young women who are in high school and college, and I’ll be urging them to do their part to help girls worldwide attend school. And that’s really the key point I want to make during this trip to young women like you here at home: You have the power, right now, to step up and be a champion for those 62 million girls who aren’t in school. You have everything you need right now to raise awareness about their stories and to support their efforts to get an education.” Using herself as an example, she said that “when I graduated everyone asked me, ‘When are you going to get married, when are you going to have kids?’” This culture of inequality is detrimental to both men and women, she added. “When a man changes a diaper, he’s practically a hero; when a woman does it, it’s her obligation. Old-fashioned forms of culture have an

impact on society.” A lawyer by trade, Michelle Obama asked societies “not just to change laws, but hearts and minds as well,” and encouraged parents to let their girls study math and play soccer like the boys. The First Lady of the United States ended her speech with words of friendship for Queen Letizia. “She is a person who thinks like me in terms of
empowering young women; she is a very powerful voice, a model for you all. And I consider her a friend,” she said. Queen Letizia gave a speech of her own in English and Spanish defending the work carried out by the Spanish Cooperation Agency to empower women in developing countries. elpais

SPANISH BANKS SET TO PAY BILLIONS IN COMPENSATION TO BRITISH VICTIMS OF COSTAS PROPERTY CRASH • Spanish Supreme Court ruling offers hope to the estimated 100,000 Britons who became casualties of Spain’s financial meltdown • Judgment will force Spanish banks to hand back as much as £4bn to Brits who paid deposits for holiday homes that were never built • Average deposit paid per property was around £40,000, with victims now able to claim a full refund plus interest Barcelona, June 2016 – A landmark judgment by Spain’s Supreme Court could finally offer closure to the estimated 100,000 Britons whose dreams of owning a place in the sun ended in a nightmare. The ruling paves the way for anyone who paid a deposit to secure an “off-plan” property – but lost it in Spain’s financial crisis – to claim back the money. The Spanish costas are still littered with unfinished holiday homes after the country’s financial meltdown in 2008 drove hundreds of property developers out of business. Would-be buyers who had paid deposits averaging £40,000 never saw their money again as building firms went bankrupt or simply disappeared. But now a decision by Spain’s highest court to hold banks responsible for the missing money deposited in their accounts could allow British victims to claim back up to £4bn in lost deposits, according to research by the law firm Spanish Legal Reclaims. Despite the lack of official data, the firm estimates that Spanish banks could be forced to refund up to £15bn to “off-plan” buyers from across Europe who lost their deposits in the crash. They include Stephanie Davis and her late husband who lost around 75,000 Euros on a house they tried to buy on the Costa del Sol. They bought it “off plan”, and had paid a deposit and several additional payments, totalling half of the 150,000 Euro asking price. They were within days of completing the purchase when the developer, Martinsa Fadesa went into liquidation and she was promised that she would get her money
back… but so far she has received just 700 Euros! Stephanie is now retired and living in straitened circumstances after losing so much money. She is desperately hoping that the ruling will force the bank that held her money on behalf of the developer to pay it back. She says, “If I could get my money back that would be amazing”.
July 2016
Mrs Stephanie Davis
With more Britons owning a holiday home in Spain than any other nationality, UK citizens were hit disproportionately hard by Spain’s catastrophic property crash. Spanish Legal Reclaims’ research shows that as many as 100,000 Britons who had paid deposits to reserve an off-plan property in Spain lost some or all their money when the country’s construction industry imploded. Emilio Alvarez, Legal strategist at Spanish Legal Reclaims, explains: “As relatively small creditors, their chances of getting back their money from a bankrupt developer through the conventional insolvency process were virtually nil”. “But the ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court sets a crucial precedent – that the banks that held buyers’ deposits can in many cases be held liable for their loss”. “While this is wonderful news for the thousands of Britons who became innocent victims of Spain’s financial meltdown, the banks have proved reluctant to pay back what they owe without a fight”. “Spanish Legal Reclaims has unparalleled expertise in this area of law, and has formed a dedicated legal team to help non-Spaniards who lost out lodge a successful claim and win their money back”. Spanish Legal reclaims can be contacted by telephone in Spain on 93 680 4563 or in the UK on 0845 680 3849.

Dressing Up for Charity in The Almanzora Valley Once again the members of ITG are dressing up to raise funds for the Vera Orphanage by carrying on our revival of Music Hall. The Independent Theatre Group as producers of excellent entertainment is pleased to announce they are doing it again or Charity with this week’s production of – “Those Were The Days” Introducing both new and long standing members of the group this is a return to their adventure of three years ago.. Their next production, which takes the members down a different avenue from comedy and drama, will take place only in Teatro Gilabert in Arboleas, as the theatre has air conditioning. “Those Were The Days,” is a slightly more updated look at music hall and will run from Friday 8 July to Sunday 10 July inclusive. The Sunday performance will be a matinee. Many of you will remember the television programme “The Good Old Days” which came from the City Varieties Theatre in Leeds, and which is about to be reproduced in the near future. They don’t have the Harry Houdini’s, Charlie Chaplin’s and Marie Lloyd’s of this world but they do have a superb cast and crew to bring you the best of entertainment. All produced by Jakki and Barry Higginbottom and under the watchful eye of Director Carolyn Duncan and Musical Director Nick Duncan, you are assured of an entertaining performance. Whilst you don’t have to dress up ( it does get a bit warm at this time of year) we want you to join in with the choruses – of which there are many, you will remember – all carried along by our genial Master of Ceremonies –Gordon (Leonard Sachs) – Batchelor. Tickets are available from: One Stop Pools (Longos) in Albox, Total Entertainment in Arboleas and Albox and Albox Insurance on Calle Malaga, and can be reserved for collection through The Independent Theatre Box Office. More information about booking or buying tickets is available by email to itgboxoffice @gmail.com. If you like to sit in comfort and enjoy live entertainment, then come to Arboleas and Teatro Gilabert and be entertained.

a-z business directory Both individuals and businesses can support local businesses, all you have to do is: ...whenever you can, buy from a local business as opposed to buying outside of your region. These days, when most people do the majority of their shopping in giant supermarkets, out of town shopping complexes or city centre malls, it can be difficult to draw attention to a small business trading locally. But with concerns being raised over community cohesion, social inclusion and the environment, the local business has never been more important. It’s down to enterprising business owners like you to promote the importance of supporting local businesses so that the public understand why it matters and how it can benefit whole communities. In order to tackle the trend toward supermarket shopping, it’s important to understand why people choose it. Research indicates that the reasons they most frequently cite are the variety of products available and the convenience of having them all in one place.

Do you support C is for...Clothing local businesses? Challenge this directly through poster campaigns and advertisements which emphasise the variety offered by small independent businesses, contrasted with the way that monopolies tend toward homogenisation. Remind people how convenient it is to have a lot of small shops offering different products and services located in the area, and how convenient it is to be able to shop close to home. It’s okay to admit that big business has the edge in some areas if you stress that there’s a cost to this. For instance, you could have a poster featuring a pint of milk which acknowledges that it’s cheaper in the supermarket but points out how much less time is spent if it can be picked up nearby, so that it still pays to shop locally. If your business purchases its products locally, it’s worth emphasising this - shopping with you means supporting local producers and cutting down on the environmental costs of long distance transport. If you sell food, it also means getting fresher produce. You can also point out that local businesses mean local jobs and increased opportunities for local people, encouraging the young to stay in the area and become positively involved with the community. It cuts out the daily commute for many people and makes their working lives more pleasant

Mojácar’s Municipal Centro de Arte La Fuente, recently opened its doors to the Shockpalmo exhibition of paintings. Organized by Mojácar Town Council, this show with free entrance features the works of Manuel Garcia de la Torre, Anika Samoa, Beatriz Onieva and Michele Kosterr until the end of June. Shockpalmo is centred around Manuel Garcia de la Torre, tutor and mentor of the three artists who have joined forces with him on this venture. All the work exhibited is created using pastels. Garcia de la Torre is a specialist in this difficult technique and the show perfectly demonstrates that this year he has passed his knowledge onto Anika Samoa, Beatriz Onieva and Michele Koster, with great success.

What began as a month long project turned out to be a seven month journey that now culminates with the Shockpalmo exhibition. Encouraged by his success so far, Manuel Garcia de la Torre plans to continue with this group and also to extend the experience to some new students.

What You Need to Know About Sunscreen
Summer is here and we are all making the most of longer, warmer days. Summer vacation allows us to get outside and make the most of the beautiful weather. Whether you are an avid hiker, biker, surfer or you just like to flop on the beach or chill on a patio somewhere you are likely to be spending a lot more time in the sun these days. It is important that you stay safe while doing so. The potential dangers of sun exposure are common knowledge and we all know we should be protecting our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. We have been told for years that sunscreen is a necessity when spending prolonged time outdoors in summer. In some parts of the world, Australia for instance, it is a part of everyday life. You get out of the shower in the morning and the before you even dress, you apply sunscreen. However many people are torn between the idea of protecting their skin from things like sunburn, premature ageing and of course skin cancer and using harsh chemicals and heavy metals on their skin regularly.
How Does the Sun Damage our Skin The sun’s light rays which cause damage to our skin in the form of burning, aging and genetic mutations (which can lead to cancer) are collectively known as ultraviolet or UV rays. They can be further categorized into UVA and UVB rays (there are also UVC rays which are absorbed by the ozone and therefore not a concern for us). Although present year round UVB rays are most prevalent on bright sunny days in the brightest part of the day (between 10am and 4pm) during summer months. This form of UV light is what can cause damage to the upper layers of the skin and lead to photoaging and sunburn. UVA light is present even on cloudy days. It is much more prevalent than UVB light and indeed it accounts for 95% of ultraviolet radiation. UVA light affects lower layers of the skin and it is UVA rays which are responsible for tanning. In the past UVA rays were thought to be harmless and sunscreen typically only
protected against UVB light (many sunscreen still only carry this protection). More recently, studies have shown that both UVA and UVB rays can cause damage to skin cells leading to mutations in those cells which can cause cancer. The World Heath Organization along with many other experts have identified ultraviolet light as a known human carcinogen. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas (BCC and SCC) are mainly caused by UV damage to the skin cells. Melanoma is the most invasive and most dangerous form of skin cancer and this also has strong links to sun exposure and skin damage.
2.Physical sunscreens work by reflecting the UV away from the skin. They are composed of nano sized mineral particles. They are also sometimes known as mineral filters. Examples of these include Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide.
Is Sunscreen bad for me?
Oxybenzone is the most problematic of these filters and unfortunately it is also the most common. 96% of the American population show exposure to this chemical filter in the summer months. Oxybenzone penetrates the skin. It has been proven to be What is sunscreen? absorbed systemically. www.soltimes.com Physical filters are generally regarded as safer to use than chemical filter. These include Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. As previously mentioned they consist of nano particles which deflect the harmful UV rays away from the skin. The nano particles should be covered in inert chemicals to prevent the filters themselves damaging the skin. Both of these physical filters have been shown to be absorbed by the skin particularly when it has already been damaged by the sun. Using sunscreen on skin which is already burned or damaged by the sun can cause increased penetration of all the harmful chemicals in the sunscreen you use. It is not only the filters themselves which are damaging. Preservatives such as methlyisothiazolinone are known allergens and are deemed unsafe for use in Europe but still widely used in sunscreens in North America. Retinyl Palmitate or Vitamin A is often added to sunscreen and many other cosmetics because is is deemed to have anti-ageing properties. This chemical which may also be known as Retinoic Acid in another form is an antioxidant. Animal studies carried out on mice in 2009 showed an increased rate of skin tumour development in mice coated with Vitamin A cream when they were exposed to sunlight. Once exposed to UV light, Vitamin A product on skin cause hyperplasia, excess skin growth and free radicals which can in turn cause cancer.
What does SPF mean and why is it important? The SPF or sun protection factor in sunscreens is based on the protection they offer against UVB rays. Many do not offer any protection against UVA rays at all. In Europe UVA protections must be at least 30% of the SPF in a sunscreen- i.e. SPF30 must have SPF 10 for
UVA. This is not the case in North America. Zinc Oxide and Avobenzone have been shown to be two of the best filters to UVA rays. Another factor to consider when looking at SPF is the strength. SPF is calculated under laboratory conditions and not real life ones where sun exposure, water exposure and other environmental factors are not regulated and cannot be controlled. In reality when SPF
is tested in real life condition it often offer much lower protection than advertised on the packaging. Furthermore it has been shown that people use less sunscreen
We at Sophia´s would like to congratulate Aran Bates (Fitness Monitor at Sophia´s Wellness Centre) and Julia Hubbard for representing Spain in the INBA Natural Body Building Championships. The both of them travelled to Budapest and met up with 300 athletes and 30 different countries this month. For Aran this was his first ever competition, and he performed very well and is now back to training hard at Sophia´s. Julia took 5th position in ´sports model´ and sixth in figure categories, this qualifying her for the Olympia competition in Las Vegas in November.

than what the manufacturer recommends. Sunscreen should be applied 2mg/cm2. Typically, it is actually applied anywhere between 0.39-15mg/cm2. This means that the functional SPF is only a fraction of what is written on the bottle. There is debate about the efficacy of sunscreen in reducing rates of Basal Cell Carcinoma or Melanoma. Some sources claim that it is well established for BCC and Squamous Cell Carcinoma. While others only show that SCC rates are improved with sunscreen use. The usefulness of sunscreen in preventing Melanoma remains to be proven conclusively. There is evidence that melanoma rates are in fact on the rise despite increased use of sunscreens. One explanation offered by some experts including Phillipe Autier of WHO cancer research is that high SPF changes people’s behaviour in the sun. High SPF sunscreens may in fact lead people to stay in the longer, to expose their skin more, to go out during the most dangerous times of the day and to risk repeated exposures over time as they believe they are protected. Australia caps it’s SPF values at 30. In Europe and Japan it is 50 and in Canada it is 50+. There is no demonstrable difference in the benefit of SPF 50 and anything above that. http://yaletownnaturopathic.com

Al ‘Scarface’ Capone
In 1899, Alphonse ‘Al’ Capone was born into a respectable Italian family in Brooklyn. One of nine children, he left school at 14 after punching a teacher in the face. He found work in a bowling alley where he met the gangster Johnny Torrio; Torrio recruited the young Capone into his James Street Boys gang and taught him how to project a smart and respectable image. Capone got the nickname Scarface after he’d insulted a woman so her brother Frank Gallucio had attacked him with a knife. Torrio ordered Capone to apologise to the family and later Capone employed Frank as a bodyguard. At 19 Capone married an Irish Catholic Mae Coughlin; as he was under 21 his parents had to give their permission. Johnny Torrio relocated to Chicago to run a brothel business for his boss Big Jim Colosimo. In 1919 shortly after marrying, Capone moved to Chicago to assist Torrio. Big Jim was soon dead (killed reputedly by Capone) so Johnny conveniently took over. Prohibition started in 1920 giving new opportunities for Capone and
Many of us are probably still in a state of shock following the result of the recent referendum. Whether we supported Remain or Leave, we’re probably struggling to comprehend all the resultant implications, aware that more consequences may yet become apparent in due time. With some campaigners now apparently distancing themselves from statements made earlier, we’re now told that there might not be quite as much additional funding available for NHS as previously hoped, additional taxation or further cuts may be needed to balance the books and immigration won’t necessarily be reduced. And with feelings running high we’re seeing an increase in racial attacks and fears that, far from getting greater, Britain could well face a reduction in World influence as Scotland, and quite possibly Northern Ireland seek independence as a means of maintaining their membership of the EU. But why should we be surprised? For the success of democracy depends on the electorate being well informed; yet on this occasion facts, as opposed to scare stories and misinformation, seemed in remarkably short supply from both sides of the debate, leaving few of us able to vote with any real confidence. And this of course is no
new phenomenon. Why, just under 2000 years ago, in what must have been one of the first recorded referenda, Pilate called on the crowd to vote on the fate of Jesus, falsely accused of having claimed to be King, in direct opposition to Caesar. “So”, he asked the crowd, “should he remain alive? Or be executed?” And the Bible tells us how with lies and misinformation, the politicians and religious leaders of the day stirred up their electorate to vote overwhelmingly for his execution, in one of the greatest travesties of justice the World has ever seen, beside which our present troubles pale into insignificance. We may bemoan the failures of others, but recognising our own failings, we need, like the followers of Jesus, to move forward in a spirit of love, to serve the needs of others as best we can.

his boss. As Chicago, sits on the edge of Lake Michigan, it was easy to import Canadian whiskey. Only a day’s drive away are New York and Atlantic City, so Rum and Scotch whisky were smuggled in from the east coast. Two of Al’s brothers worked for him, Ralph ran his beer brewing and bottling business, Frank was sharp suited like Al with a reputation for violence and was his enforcer. By chance a third brother James became a prohibition agent, In 1923 the new Chicago Mayor started to clean up the city; Torrio sent Al and his brother Frank to a suburb called Cicero were they infiltrated the Republican run council. They persuaded the council leader Klenha and other councillors to benefit from the mob payroll. Then it was easy to transfer brothels, gambling dens and speakeasies to the area. Al appointed Frank as council liaison, so when in 1924 the Democrats tried to win local elections Frank had men armed with machine guns and shotguns at polling booths to ensure locals ‘voted right.’ In response Chicago Police
sent plain clothes reinforcements. Al and Frank mistook the policemen as rival gang members and a shootout ensued leaving Frank dead. Al was heartbroken at the loss of his brother and retaliated by kidnapping and killing officials. He then stole ballot boxes ensuring Klenha won again. After a failed assassination attempt on him; Torrio retired and returned to Italy leaving the business to Capone. By now even the latest Mayor of Chicago was being bribed and Capone’s businesses were turning over a $100 million a year. Capone courted the press and was often photographed at restaurants and the opera. He was a philanthropist too, setting up soup kitchens during the Great Depression and gave a lot of money to charity. Once after a failed attempt on his life had resulted in the injury of a mother and son, he paid the family’s hospital bills. Strangely the police never had enough evidence to convict Capone on any charges. He used cash for everything to avoid a paper trail
but after buying and renovating a mansion in Florida the government used that as evidence to jail him for 9 years in 1931 for tax evasion. Capone almost got away with it but his plan to bribe the jury was discovered and the jurors were switched at the last moment. Capone bought special privileges whilst inside at first but then got transferred to a new prison - Alcatraz. Here he couldn’t communicate with his gang and with prohibition ending in 1935 business dried up. Capone suffered from syphilis and was released in 1939; moving to Florida a very sick man. The disease attacked his brain leaving him with the mental age of a child. He died quietly at home surrounded by family in 1947; aged just 48. The HBO series Boardwalk Empire portrays the prohibition story brilliantly.

Spanish households spend an average of 23.58% of their annual family budget on their mortgage or home rental payments, according to a recent study by pisos.com, based on the latest family budget survey data from the National Statistics Institute. Specifically, according to Europa Press, the cost of renting a home requires an average of 25.71% of the household budget, compared with the average cost of paying a mortgage, which stands at 21.46 of the budget. The regions where home rental costs account for a greater part of the household budget are the Basque Country (34.36%), Madrid (35.89%) the Balearic Islands (30.45%) and Valencia (30.34%), while the regions with the most affordable rental prices are Castilla La Mancha (21.09%), Galicia (21.34%), Navarre (21.70%) and Cantabria (22.09%). With regard to homeowners, the
regions where a higher proportion of the household budget is required for mortgage payments are the Basque Country (31.77%), the Balearic Islands (27.22%), Madrid (24.43%) and Cantabria (23.64%), while in contrast, the most economical regions are Castilla La Mancha (14.95%), Navarre (16.53%), Murcia (16.97%) and Aragón (17.94%). kyero.com

The bright side of Brexit: The 'good news' for Brits in Spain
estate agents added: "The pound is always going up and down and around. We nearly had parity a few years ago and we didn't go out of business.” Get rich selling your house But as well as those who pile through the arrival gates each year, there are hundreds if not thousands who return to Britain. For people who already own property in Spain, now might just be the time to put it on the market, sell up and head home. Thanks to the exchange rate you're going to be able to get more for your money back home. And it might even get better if you wait a little bit. "Given the thrashing of the exchange rates it is a good time to sell your house and buy sterling," said Maura Hillen, a town councillor in Albox representing expats. And it's not all bad news for buyers While it may become a good market for leavers (those heading out of Spain, not those who voted Out) the reality is that it's still not too bad for buyers either. While estate agents are clearly concerned, they say there are still many great deals out there for those looking to sell up in the UK and buy a house in Spain. “The Brits buy in Spain for the wonderful climate and bohemian lifestyle. That hasn’t changed and houses in Spain will always have a pull for the British purchaser,” a spokesman for property website Kyero said.
Britain has voted to leave the European Union, and many if not most British expats in Spain are deeply concerned. But there are a few silver linings... perhaps. Readers fed up with all the negativity have asked us to try and put some positive spin on the result of the Brexit referendum and the economic fall out, which began even before the results came in. It has not been easy, but we've had a go at looking on the bright side of Brexit for Brits in Spain. Cheaper visits back home With the value of the pound falling surely and swiftly since Friday morning - on Tuesday it was worth around €1.20 - life in Spain for those Britons who rely on income from back home will be more expensive. But on the flip side, it will certainly make trips home to see the family in Britain a little cheaper. Especially if you earn a wage in euros but spend in pounds. We've been here before The fall in the pound is indeed worrying and Brits have told The Local they have already seen the value of their pensions cut. But the one thing to remember is that we've been here before. "Back in 2008 we saw almost parity between the euro and the pound so at the moment it’s not too disastrous," Victoria Lewis, a financial advisor said "Most people are not panicking yet," she said. Spanish property before Spain joined the Eurozone and there'll still be a thriving market once Britain leaves. Property prices in Spain remain relatively low, and this is still an excellent time to make a shrewd investment in the Spanish property market.” Nothing will happen for a while, if ever? One thing that is certain is that nothing will happen for a while. And some, in fact many are suggesting that it will become so complicated for the UK to leave the EU that it might never happen. In the meantime Simon Manley, British Ambassador in Madrid sent a message of calm to expats in Spain. “The truth is that, right now, nothing has changed. You can still live here, work here, just as you did before.” Europe might actually become stronger Of course, no one knows what will happen with the EU now that the UK has voted to leave. But its leaders, at least those from France, Germany and Italy, are promising "a new impulse" to the EU

It may be that the British public's rejection of the EU, may force Europe to carry out the many necessary reforms to prevent other countries from following suit. And without Britain blocking the path, it may actually be possible to bring Europe closer together politically, which is what many economists believe is necessary. In short, Brexit could give the EU an almighty kick up the backside and force it to take steps to make its economy stronger and to make the voters feel less disconnected from the decision makers. It's a great time to become Spanish Let’s face it, Spaniards know how to enjoy life. Not only do they have an amazing climate and great food but they also enjoy the longest life expectancy in the world (after the Japanese). For those who've always dreamed of being one of them, this might be your chance. thelocal

Spain enters race to host EU bank regulator Spain will compete with other countries in the European Union to host the headquarters of the EU's London-based bank regulator following Britain's decision to leave the bloc, its deputy prime minister said on Friday. The race to host the European Banking Authority is led by Paris and Frankfurt, the largest EU financial centres, but no decision has been reached and other countries have also put themselves forward in the scramble to give London's agencies a new home. Spain has set up a working group to drive Spain's bid for the EBA and for the London-based European Medicines Agency, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria told a news conference. Santamaria also said Spain would
seek to lure international banks based in London which are looking to move their operations to remain inside the European Union. "We will focus intensely on measures that can help us to boost the competitiveness that Spain already has, such as its level of economic growth, so that financial institutions that need a secondary base in the EU move here," she said. An EBA spokeswoman said last Sunday that the European Union would have to decide on relocation and in the meantime the agency would continue to operate in London. Spain currently only hosts minor European agencies such as the EU Agency for Safety and Health at Work and the European Fisheries Control Agency. tumbit.com

The Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria (Part two) The telephone in the Oficina de keep below Air Traffic Control radar. The
Turismo never stopped ringing, well it rang four times in the last week, in itself a record. The advertising campaign had certainly paid off. Over one hundred places out of the two hundred available at the Riverside Holiday Village booked. The consultant Alvaro Spineto had advised them to use a fraudulent approach to their advertising. Promise them everything but get them here. Then get their cash before they realise that as a holiday resort it ranks very close to a wet weekend in Chernobyl. Anselmo Adamso, the village photographer got the interesting commission to photograph the young ladies of the village, perhaps the only viable asset Alqueria has. They posed with lascivious grins and very little else. Anselmo Adamso also had a lascivious grin. The session went on longer than anticipated and the last dozen shots were not fit for publication. Adamso kept these for his own uses however. The charter-flight operated by Spanish Peninsular Logistical Air Transport or SPLAT which they have blazoned across the fuselage in bright red lettering was booked and filling fast. Their only aircraft is rather old but they are able to operate in European airspace provided it can
Riverside Holiday Village itself was as ready as it was going to be. Accommodation for two hundred, two dining halls, a games room and twenty bars. The philosophy being, if they drink enough they will lose all feeling in their lower limbs and won’t notice their surroundings. The only problematic area was the Río Verde. Billed as a swimmers’ paradise, it was in fact lethal. The strange mutant fish were capable of carrying off anyone under seven and the algae caused an aggressive fungal growth which hasn’t as yet been categorised by the World Health Organisation. A powerful poison had been introduced into the water but the river life seemed to thrive on it. The bizarre assortment of waterborne creatures are now even more robust. Everything has to be ready as today is the Grand Opening of the Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria. The charter flight had landed safely at Almería Airport, a fact duly celebrated in the airline’s office. A fleet of four coaches approached the Comino de Alqueria crossed the old stone and drove into the resort. The disembarked visitors stared in disbelief at the ramshackle accommodation, the steaming malodorous river all surrounded by a black effervescing swamp. Events could have turned nasty if the holiday makers had had time to organise themselves and select a leader. Blythe sensing trouble spoke the only words guaranteed to pacify any British holiday maker. “Free beeah at the boozah bonny lads”. Will beer be enough? Are the holiday makers revolting? We will see.
LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com MENTIONING A TRUST ON A SPANISH WILL IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE. SOMETIMES WHAT IS LEGALLY POSSIBLE AND WHAT IS PRACTICAL IS NOT THE SAME THING. THIS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE. Question: I had a Spanish will made for myself and my wife some time ago. We recently hired a solicitor to handle a conveyance and he has taken a look at the wills, which had been prepared two years ago, and told us they are no good and that we should make new ones. We are uncertain what to do. Our instructions to our original solicitor were to prepare the Spanish will in Spain exactly how we had prepared our English wills in UK. He said that since Directive 650/2012 this can be done. Answer: As my granny would always say: a little knowledge can cause a lot of damage. There is no doubt: the wills are dreadful and need to be changed. I doubt the person who prepared your will has ever dealt with probate in Spain. (I say this because any solicitor I know would tell you that your will is asking for trouble). The will essentially translates the English will you handed her and sets up a trust to protect your children versus your second wife. Even though Directive 650/2012 allows English law to be applied (by choice of the testator)
to how an estate is distributed in Spain, using institutions like trusts will cause endless problems and expenses for your heirs because Trusts are not understood in Spain the same way as in UK. So Certifications of English law (which are very expensive) will be required to help wind up the estate (by explaining the content of English law). To this add a lot of problems with Spanish Inheritance tax (remember Directive 650/2012 has no effect on the taxation of the estate). In Spain it is the beneficiary that pays inheritance tax not the estate. Descendants and spouse in Andalucía are exempt if they each receive less than 175,000€. In this case the trustee is a non-family member. As he has faculty to dispose of assets, the Spanish tax office could interpret that, as he is in control of the estate, he is the person that owes the tax and as a non-family member he will receive a large tax bill. (This could all be battled out but would be messy.) Conclusion: Keep things sensible and uncomplicated. In this case achieve what you want using methods that are common practice in Spain. Leave the life possession of your property to your wife and the residual value to your children. With the values you have sent me the estate will be exempt, probate will be simple and both your children and your wife will be fully protected as you asked for.

The Foibles of Henry Our present car, Henry Zachariah Smith, is a much posher and altogether more upper-class successor to Del, our previous car, and he likes his superiority to be known. He stands out in any car park by being Ivory, not just any old silver or white – how common are they?! And as for those lurid reds and blues, well, my dear, how COULD they! Henry is a car, and yet he insists that there is a matter of the protocol of approach and personal interaction. He eschews the common key, instead he has a card - should any harm or mishap occur to it then it is nearly cheaper to buy a whole new car than a whole new card! He likes to be approached boot first. When the card is in his parameter of consciousness he will open the boot. However, it takes several polite requests and button-pushing before he will condescend to open either of the front doors. Once having been granted permission to enter his hallowed interior, and pushed his Go button, he will start, (as long as he is not in gear!) But he won’t go anywhere until he is absolutely sure that you are fully informed of the status quo. He needs you to know that the back seatbelt are not fastened – there’s nobody in the back, Henry! ‘Well don’t say I didn’t tell you they were not fastened.’ ‘The airbags are on.’ ‘Yes, that’s how we want them.’ ‘One of my doors isn’t properly shut.’ ‘Which one?’ ‘Find out for yourself.’ I get out, check all doors including

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk the boot, get back in and engage reverse. Henry prefers forward, so we have a short, pursed-lip tussle until I get reverse. Henry retaliates by delaying displaying his magic photographic rear camera complete with pooping sounds until I have got to where I am going. Then it’s ‘You’ve not fully released my brake.’ OK, attended to. ‘One of my tyres feels a little flat.’ ‘Which one.’ ‘Find out for yourself. Do I have to do EVERYTHING for you?’ A trip to the airline detected about a gnat’s puff of air missing on the fourth tyre tested. His latest was ‘My key is running out.’ We took his key indoors, looked up his manual, all 274 pages of it, which are only available on-line and sought to discovered how to dismantle his key to remove the battery. It took ages. I’ll tell you another day, when we’ve both got time to kill!
Lighter News This stunning optical illusion which cleverly shows objects being reflected in a different shape baffled the internet. Engineering and artist Kokichi Sugihara created the installation which was named as a finalist in the 2016 Illusion of the Year contest. Six squares are placed in a front of a mirror but as they are lined up an entirely different shape is projected to the camera. The squares becomes a crate of six interjoined circles. When the mass of shapes are rotated, a different shape is then beamed back from the mirror. Since the video was posted on YouTube last week, more than 150,000 people have viewed the clip. One YouTube user quipped: “The only plausible scientific explanation is voodoo magic.” Another said simply: “My brain hurts.” A day later another video was posted by 3D printing company Make Anything titled ‘Ambiguous Cylinder Illusion/How It Works’ which explained the optical magic using a 3D printer and reverse engineering. It revealed one side of the mirror is shaped like a square and curved upwards. The other side is like a circle and sloped downwards. T h e s e different heights correct the fact that the sides are different, so it blends into either a circle or square when the true shape is right in between.

Polpette di pollo Mini chicken meatballs
ingredients
200g stale ciabatta loaf 600 g ripe mixed tomatoes roughly chopped sea salt freshly ground black pepper 1 handful small capers drained 1 small red onion peeled and very finely sliced 280 g jarred red peppers drained and roughly chopped 8 anchovy fillets in oil drained and finely sliced (optional) red wine vinegar extra virgin olive oil a bunch of fresh basil
Method
Tear the ciabatta into rough 3cm pieces and place on a tray. Leave aside in a warm place for around 30 min utes – this helps to dry it out. Place the tomatoes in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Rinse the capers, squeezing out any exce ss liquid and add to the bowl, along with the onion, peppers, ciabatta and anchovies, if using. Toss the mix ture together with your hands, then stir in 2 tablespoons of vinegar and about 3 times as much extra virgin olive oil. Taste and add a little more salt, pepper, vinegar or oil, if needed. Tear in the basil leaves, stir toge ther and serve. Delicious with barb ecued meats or roast chicken.
Method Preheat the oven to 180°C/ gas 4. Using a large knife, roughly chop up the chicken, giving it some texture, then set aside. Roughly break up the bread into a bowl and pour over the milk, tossing it together, and set aside until the milk is absorbed. Put the soaked bread,
olives, capers, garlic and parmesan in a blender and blitz until combined. Add the chicken and break in the egg, then pulse very briefly, until the mixture is blended enough to be moulded into balls but is still a little chunky. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Roll the mixture into small balls about 2.5cm wide Place the meatballs in a greased ovenproof dish. Drizzle generously with oil and bake in the oven for 30 minutes, turning the balls halfway so they’re golden on all sides. While the meatballs are cooking, make your sugo. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat, add the garlic and cook for approximately 3 minutes, until softened but not coloured. Tip in the tinned tomatoes, then fill the empty tin a third of the way with water and add this as well. Cook over a high heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has reduced and thickened. If your tomatoes taste slightly acidic, stir in the sugar to sweeten. Season with salt and pepper. Add the sauce to the dish 5-10 minutes before the meatballs have finished cooking. Serve with some parsley scattered on top.

F.A.C.E. Conclude Their Summer Giving Campaign.
F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everyone), concluded their Summer Giving Campaign by presenting Harmony President Karen Revel with some much needed toilet seat risers. Harmony is just over a year old and is situated within the C.A.T. Services building in Avenida Andalucia in La Alfoquia. It is committed to provide voluntary, practical and informative assistance to people who are in need through ill health. The group promises to work with other charities and organisations to provide practical assistance to those in need of companionship, transport, translations, counselling, home help and any other requirements that might be needed. The group have also set up a refreshment area in the C.A.T. Services building called Harmony Haven. This is a dedicated area where you will find a warm welcome provided by volunteers, who are more than willing to have a chat over a cup of tea or coffee and a slice of cake. F.A.C.E. has supported Harmony since it’s inception by providing equipment in the past such as cups, saucers, plates, cutlery and other utensils. However, Harmony are trying to build up a stock of equipment that will be useful to their clients. So on this occasion F.A.C.E. have donated the afore mentioned toilet seat risers as they are an incredibly valuable piece of equipment in helping some people to continue a relatively normal existence even though they are suffering from painful ailments. F.A.C.E. hopes to continue it’s support for Harmony in the future. Throughout June F.A.C.E. has donated just short of €2,000 to various organisations within the Almanzora Valley, including the “Little Owls” and M.A.C.S. (Mojacar Area Cancer Support). For further information on Harmony Community Support telephone 634 339 192 between 11-00am and 2-00pm or e-mail help@ harmonycharity.com For further information on F.A.C.E. please ring Adele Wrigglesworth on 667 255 094 or visit www.face-charity.com or take a look at the F.A.C.E. Charity Facebook Page.

Book Review
The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
The ship, bow first, was slowly sinking into the water. People began tumbling like broken dolls from the decks, flopping, flailing into the sea. There was a huge cracking sound-and then the Titanic disappeared. Kate Alcott, a pseudonym for Patricia O’Brien, used transcripts of the US Senate hearings over the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. Some of the characters are based on real characters who either survived the sinking such as the Duff Gordons and Margaret Brown as well as Senate William Alden Smith who presided over the hearings, otherwise Alcott admits to this being a work of fiction with the inclusion of factual evidence. I would highly recommend this book. Gripping from start to finish and I mean that! Tess Collins is the kind of heroine I admire and strongly approve of. She comes from modest roots, a large family struggling to make ends meet. Her father is critical and a man of the time, denying equal rights to women. Tess is constantly haunted by his oppressive and deprecating tones: You’re a farm girl, do your job, keep your head down and don’t put on airs. He was under the impression that she would ruin her life through defiance. Thankfully, Tess is a stubborn lady and is determined to make her life better not wreck it. She proves to be a good role model just like her mother: look for opportunity. Keep your head up, not down. Don’t settle for safety. Push forward-you are not foolish to try. What a far cry from her father’s damning thoughts: Watch out, foolish girl. Tess feels ashamed of working as a servant, an image of servitude when she is duped into accepting work in Cherbourg. She was a good seamstress and we see evidence of this when she starts working for the indomitable Lady Gordon Duff, a famous dress designer, the person she most admired in the world. Like many others, Tess is on the cusp of a new life filled with immense possibilities, a dream come true, a wonderful fantasy. Sailing on the Titanic with the famous and wealthy. Two infatuated men, one a rich American businessman, Jack Bremerton, the other a talented member of the crew, Jim Bonney who sweep her off her feet. Wonderful and then…the jolt, the slight bump followed by a sudden silence and the sadly ironical remark: We bumped into an iceberg but all is well. Bumping, scrambling, shouting. Suddenly there was an acrid, sweaty smell of human fear in the salt air. Children wailing. Panic everywhere. Desperation. Followed by the horrors that have been well-documented over the years. That this ruined people’s lives is an understatement and I mean for those who were lucky enough to survive. We are told that 706 survived out of a

passenger list of 2,223 and that out of these 60% of the first-class passengers survived, most of them women. In steerage, it was 25%. In reality, the Duff Gordons and their secretary escaped in a lifeboat that could have held 40-50 people instead of 12. In The Dressmaker Alcott explores how the couple were vilified by the press and people in both the USA and the UK. Lady Duff Gordon is subpoenaed to give a statement of what happened in Lifeboat One, contradicting Jim Bonney’s statement. There were crimes against humanity, moral crimes, tales of bribery and refusals to fill the boat and look for survivors. Marrying into the titled class. Gave her licence to be cold about people’s lives. And this is when Tess has to grow up, think for herself and decide on what she really wants out of life. Should she stand up, challenge and do what she wants to do OR should she be careful, be loyal and challenge nothing? Can she remain with her ideal, continue to admire and respect her after learning how self-absorbed, selfish and a bit careless the woman is? People choose whatever they want to believe and declare it true. What is the truth? Will anyone accept any liability for so many loss of lives? Our poor heroine is filled with so much uncertainty. How could she be sure of anything anymore? She has crucial decisions to make over her future with Lady Duff Gordon and her love life. Interestingly, her mother’s advice and her own common sense are pivotal in her decision making. She certainly is true to herself and full of hope not despair. She would be strong and not always too careful, not settle for a smaller life, and face what was true. As she walked through the streets of New York she felt strangely serene she was just a servant girl from Cherbourg without a job but she had a life and a future. That was important. Jack Bremerton called her extraordinary as a character and I would endorse this. She is the kind of person one would feel immense pride and joy to be with and I finalise by repeating what a role model she would make for women around the world today. I rest my case. Publisher: Sphere (Little Brown Book Group) ISBN: 978-0-7515-4923-2 REVIEW it by Carol Naylor. www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com naylorcl@hotmail.es
