Spain’s public debt grows further, hitting highest level since 1909 After taking on another €18 billion, the country’s ratio of borrowing now stands at 100.9% of GDP. Spain’s public debt rose in June by €18.549 billion, reaching a total of €1.107 trillion, the highest figure ever in absolute terms. As a percentage of GDP, the ratio of the country’s debt comes in at 100.9%, a record figure that even exceeds the 100.5% seen in March, which was when the ratio broke the 100% barrier for the first time. Such a figure has not been seen since 1909, when, according to records, debt levels reached 102% of GDP. Sources from the Economy Ministry say that the figures must be put into the context of the debt calendar Sources at the Economy Ministry say that the figures must be put into the context of the debt calendar, which can see peaks and troughs due to the differences between emission and repayment dates. The main maturity dates come in January, April, July and October. Once these factors are taken into account, the ministry says, the country’s growth is seen to be continuing the deceleration that began in 2013, and as such will achieve the target of 99.1% set out in the stability program by the end
of 2016. That’s to say, the expected growth in GDP for this year, which will dilute the percentage, should bring the figure down for the second year in a row. However, the European Commission does not believe that the government will manage to bring the debt ratio down this year. According to its forecasts, it believes that Spain will end the year with debt levels of 100.3% of GDP. But the Economy Ministry insists that the historically low cost of borrowing makes the debt levels sustainable. The intervention of the European Central Bank in the markets has in large part made this situation possible. Spain’s public debt has seen unstoppable rises since 2009. That year it reached 52.7% of GDP, compared to 39.4% just a year before. It continued to notch up percentage points at a huge speed until it passed the 90% barrier in 2013. That year, in March, it passed the 100% barrier for the first time in more than a century. April saw the ratio ease somewhat, but in May and June it picked up pace once more. elpais

SEVERAL thrill-seekers have been injured at a Costa del Sol theme park. According to reports, five were treated for whiplash while several others suffered minor cuts and bruises. The incident occurred on the Torre de Caida Libre ride at Tivoli World in Benalmadena. It is believed a ride descended much faster than usual owing to a problem with the upper anchorage. The emergency brakes had to be applied as the ride began plummeting towards the ground. The park says there were no serious injuries, adding that the ride will remain closed until further notice. expatica

3 WAYS TO KEEP WASPS AND BEES AWAY FROM YOUR POOL
A dip in your pool is often a great way to spend those hot summer days, but nothing can ruin a good time faster than a sharp sting from a wasp or bee while you are taking a dip in your pool. Bees and wasps are often frequent pests of pools. Remember, you basically have created a giant watering hole in their eyes. So what do you do? Here are three great ways to keeping wasps and bees away from you swimming pool: • Use Diesel Fuel Insects are very attracted to diesel fuel for some reason. If you place a bottle or two of this around your pool but out of the reach of children, wasps and bees will flock to it and get stuck inside the bottle eventually drowning in the fuel. • Try Raw Meat Wasps love raw meat. Try hanging a
bit of leftover cheap steak or beef in an area away from your pool. This will draw them away from the pool as they head to the feast. If you like, you can place a bucket with water and a little detergent below it. When they fall from the meat, they will get stuck in the bucket of water and drown. • Change Your Landscape
Insects, particularly bee, love plants, but they don’t love every plant. There are two plants in particular that bees absolutely hate and will avoid at all costs – lemon grass and mint. Both of these plants are pleasant smelling to us humans and look great in any pool landscaping. They are easy to take care of and are very good a t keeping those bees away from your pool.

hour medical centre. Albox has a municipal swimming pool, very typical of inland Spanish towns that don’t have access to beaches. A large market is held every Tuesday morning. On market days the neighbouring streets are shut off to traffic and stalls open up selling fresh fruit, vegetables and bread. The town offers visitors an insight into the lifestyle of a traditional Spanish town, with its traditional customs and culture. Every year Albox celebrates All Saints Day (Halloween) with a massive week long fiesta from 31st October-6th November.

Turre situated to the north of Sierra Cabrera, next to the River Aguas, the name is taken from the Latin origin Turris which means “Tower” because of a watchtower built by the Moslems during the nazaria times in the current location of Turre. You should not visit Turre without seeing the archaeological remains of the village Teresa near Cabrera the settlement dates from the late Middle Ages; among the remains there are also a mill and an aqueduct. Moreover, the Christian presence in the Middle Ages has left many religious buildings trying most of the time to hide beliefs that were present before, as in the case of the church dating from the sixteenth century which was built on an ancient mosque Gastronomy in Turre When visiting Turre, you cannot leave without tasting the typical tasty dishes of this municipality: • Zanguangua : This is a very refreshing dish served especially during the summer • Caldo pimentón: Prepared with fish or clams, potatoes, dried peppers, tomatoes, garlic and water. • Gurullos: Typical dish of Almeria. • Blodd sausage - Snails in spicy sauce • Marinated Sardines • Tortas de chicharrones (Krackling cakes of lard)

Tiny Spanish publisher clones world's most mysterious book
It’s one of the world’s most mysterious books, a centuries-old manuscript written in an unknown or coded language that no one — not even the best cryptographers — has cracked. Scholars have spent their lives puzzling over the Voynich Manuscript, whose intriguing mix of elegant writing and drawings of strange plants and naked women has some believing it holds magical powers. The weathered book is locked away in a vault at Yale University’s Beinecke Library, emerging only occasionally. But after a ten-year quest for access, Siloe, a small publishing house nestled deep in northern Spain, has secured the right to clone the document — to the delight of its director. “Touching the Voynich is an experience,” says Juan Jose Garcia, sitting on the top floor of a book museum in the quaint centre of Burgos where Siloe’s office is, a few paved streets away from the city’s famed Gothic cathedral. “It’s a book that has such an aura of mystery that when you see it for the first time… it fills you with an emotion that is very hard to describe.” Siloe, which specialises in making facsimiles of old manuscripts, has bought the rights to make 898 exact replicas of the Voynich — so faithful that every stain, hole, sewn-up tear in the parchment will be reproduced. The company always publishes 898 replicas of each
work it clones — a number which is a palindrome, or a figure that reads the same backwards or forwards — after the success of their first facsimile that they made 696 copies of… another palindrome. The publishing house plans to sell the facsimiles for €7,000 to €8,000 ($7,800 to $8,900) apiece once completed — and close to 300 people have already put in pre-orders. Raymond Clemens, curator at the Beinecke Library, said Yale decided to have facsimiles done because of the many people who want to consult the fragile manuscript. “We thought that the facsimile would provide the look and feel of the original for those who were interested,” he said. “It also enables libraries and museums to have a copy for instructional purposes and we will use the facsimile ourselves to show the manuscript outside of the library to students or others who might be interested.” The manuscript is named after antiquarian Wilfrid Voynich who bought it around 1912 from a collection of books belonging to the Jesuits in Italy, and eventually propelled it into the public eye. Theories abound about who wrote it and what it means. For a long time, it was believed to be the work of 13th century English Franciscan friar Roger Bacon whose interest in alchemy and magic landed him in jail. But that theory was discarded when the manuscript was carbon dated and found to have originated between 1404 and 1438. Others point to a young Leonardo da Vinci, someone who wrote in code to escape the Inquisition, an elaborate joke or even an alien who left the book behind when leaving Earth. Its content is even more mysterious. The plants drawn have never been identified, the astronomical charts don’t reveal much and neither do the women. Does the book hold the key to eternal youth? Or is it a mere collection of herbal medicine and

QUESTION: I am trying to help my mother who has very bad health and wishes to move back to the UK but has not managed to sell her Spanish property yet. From a legal point are there any matters to take care of before she comes back? ANSWER 1. Make sure her Spanish will is in good order. There have been some changes to the laws recently which make it convenient to have a solicitor take a look at it. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers. 3. Make sure internet banking is set up on her Spanish bank account. 4. Your mother may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with her Spanish assets (in case a buyer is found and
she does not wish or is not able to visit Spain). 5. Look in to the advantages/disadvantages of selling quickly now versus holding on and waiting for a better price. From a tax point of view, if she is a resident and over 65, there is a certain advantage to selling before she loses her resident status in Spain, as she is entitled to a 100% exemption from capital gains tax. 6. Meet her solicitor before you leave in case you later need to deal with things remotely. Depending on your circumstances there could be other things to do, but I would at least cover these items.

recipes? Scores have tried to decode the Voynich, including top cryptologists such as William Friedman who helped break Japan’s “Purple” cipher during World War II. But the only person to have made any headway is… Indiana Jones, who in a novel featuring the fictitious archaeologist manages to crack it. Fiction aside, the Beinecke Library gets thousands of emails every month from people claiming to have decoded it, says Rene Zandbergen, a space engineer who runs a recognised blog on the manuscript, which he has consulted several times. “More than 90 percent of all the access to their digital library is only for the Voynich Manuscript,” he adds. Only slightly bigger than a paperback, the book contains over 200 pages including several large foldouts. It will take Siloe around 18 months to make the first facsimiles, in a painstaking process that started in April when a photographer took detailed snaps of the original in Yale. Workers at Siloe are currently making mock-ups before they finally set about printing out the pages in a way that makes the script and drawings look like the real deal. The paper they use — made from a paste developed by the company — has been given a special treatment so it feels like the stiff parchment used to write the Voynich. Once printed, the pages are put together and made to look older. All the imperfections are re-created using special tools in a process kept firmly secret by Garcia, who in his spare time has also tried his hand at cryptology. “We call it the Voynich Challenge,” he says. “My business partner… says the author of the Voynich could also have been a sadist, as he has us all wrapped up in this mystery.” thelocal

The Dark Web – Where is it? What is it? Most importantly, Is it a bad place? Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help, you can contact me to make an appointment at my workshop or clinic (which is at Maloan’s bar in Albox). Let’s start with a quick reminder of what the Web is, and how it works. The internet is a web (probably one of the best analogues as it accurately describes exactly how these things are connected) of interconnected computer servers whose function is to traffic information from anywhere to anywhere. For it to work it require 2 things: The first is an indexing system and the second is a complex way of transferring this information over this web of computers. Every website that you visit has it’s pages indexed and this information is made available to every other indexing server out there. Where do you find one of these indexing servers? Type “google.co.uk” or “yahoo.co.uk” or any one of a hundred other similar search engines and you have found a place where these indexes are stored. The second system is a great deal more complicated and is constantly evolving! Essentially, everything sent over the web is broken down into tiny packets of information. In these packets is everything that is needed to ensure it gets to where it’s going and that it hasn’t been tampered with on the way.
Dog version of the Olympics arrives in Britain
rely on daily. This is the visible or surface web. The deep web is simply an extension of this and has pages that are deliberately not indexed or are some way obfuscated to prevent being found. Is this bad? Well it is also used by Banking systems to ensure safe money transfers, video on demand and don’t forget your web mail. All these use the Deep Web! Let’s not forget, during any form of conflict, all sides used similar techniques and methods to transfer information back to their bosses. I’m sure James Bond (007) used “Back Doors” and “Dead Letter Drops” to survive. All this is done on the deep web. The Dark Web is part of the Deep Web that sits on the DarkNet structure. This is that invisible network that can only be accessed with specific software, configurations, or authorization, often using non-standard communications protocols and ports. OK now you are absolutely no wiser let’s see if we can make it a little more real. Hands up everyone that has used a Tor Browser or Tor Messenger or for that matter download music or a movie using torrent. Would you be surprised when I tell you that you are using the deep web and in parts the dark web? Well if you believe Hollywood or any of the government agencies then it is a place where terrorist, paedophiles, perverts, assassins and all the scum of the earth hide. We all use part of it and there it nothing too bad about us!
THE canine version of the Olympics has arrived in Britain with dogs hoping to give Usain Bolt a run for his money. More than 2,900 pets are arriving from all over the world today to take part in the largest agility festival for man’s best friend. Rather than Rio, dogs are heading for the impressive setting of Rockingham Castle in Leicestershire for a spectacular as exciting and competitive as anything staged in the Olympic stadium. The International Agility Festival is attracting dogs and handlers from 17 countries and will see sprightly spaniels and clever collies tackle courses that would challenge the most experienced of Olympic equestrian riders. Not that competition is only open to traditional working breeds. Britain’s R.Kelly, a four year old Staffordshire bull terrier, features in a trailer produced by the Kennel Club organisers of the three-day event, showing him tackling some of the difficult obstacles that await competitors. Stars from overseas include Coma, a striking white Swiss shepherd from Spain and cute Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Mabel from Germany. They will be joining fellow participants in the 16 rings set up for the 200 separate class competitions being staged. Rather than an Olympic gold medal, dogs and handlers will be eyeing up the prestigious Nations Cup, Caroline Kisko, Kennel Club Secretary said: “The Kennel Club International Agility Festival is one of the highlights of the agility calendar and there are such a different range of competitions for everyone, from the International Young Handler competition and the Nations Cup for the leading competitors, to the companion dog shows “It’s fantastic to see so many people from all across the world attend and compete at the festival. Agility is the most popular dog sport in the UK and is a brilliant way to keep fit and healthy with your dog. “The festival is a testament to agility’s ever growing popularity.” For more information on the Kennel Club International Agility Festival, please visit w w w.the ke nne lc lub.org.uk / agilityfestival or www.facebook. com/Dogagility Coma has come all the way from Spain to compete

His Masters Voice For anyone like myself now fifty (or over) the 78 record will be the earliest remembered recorded music. 78s were first made in 1898 and manufacture continued right up until the 1970’s. In the mid 70s I got a hand me down Dansette Record Player; in funky red and white vinyl, this portable player came as a box with a locking lid. I played a few of the 78’s in my parents collection but mainly due to the nifty arm and central pin it meant that playlists could be created by stacking 7 inch singles on top of each other. At a stroke the need for getting up and changing the record every three minutes extended to wow about ten minutes if three or even four records would do their job and drop onto the turntable and play. Going way back; we can thank the Manu Musa brothers, three Moorish scholars who lived in Baghdad in the Ninth Century for the earliest known mechanical music devices. They designed and built water powered musical organs; these contained a cylinder with raised pins which rotated at a set speed and struck metallic fingers designed to produce different pitches. Windup musical boxes are made to a similar design over a thousand year later. In the thirteenth century a Flemish bell ringer

designed a device on which the rotating drum’s raised pins hit levers connected to his church bells. Two hundred years later again in Flanders; Nicholas Vallin created a clock with a revolving barrel and bells inside. The pins on the barrel could change position so different tunes could be programmed to hit the little bells within. In London in the mid 1700’s a watchmaker miniaturised the design and built a watch with tiny bells and the drum programmed to play popular tunes of the day. A big breakthrough came in 1796 when a Geneva watch maker replaced the bells with a metallic comb of which the teeth were in orderly size order to create a musical scale. Ten years later the Swiss town of Sainte-Croix starting producing the first musical boxes and soon they represented one tenth of all Swiss exports. Over to Germany in 1870 and an inventor made his own musical box which used removable discs to play music. 101 years later; Fisher Price released their colourful record player in 1971 using the same
basic technology. It came with 5 plastic double sided discs with such catching tunes as Camp Town races and TwinkleTwinkle Little Star. Playing the same tunes repeatedly was fun for children but it must have driven parents to drink. Jump forward 45 years to the present day and the Fisher Price record player is making a comeback; an ingenious chap calling himself Fred27 on Instructables.com has posted a tutorial on how to use a 3D printer to create discs for the toy with tunes such as the Star Wars theme and of course Stairway to Heaven. In fact by using hi software any tune can now be transferred to a disc so parents’ sanity can be restored. Back again to 1877 when Charles Edison invented the Phonograph and modern music recording was born. The first phonograph ran by clockwork and differed in the important fact that live sound could be recorded and played back. Like musical boxes the recording was on a drum. Next was the Gramophone with the recorded sounds on discs or records as we call them now. 78 rpm became the standard speed and the name stuck.

Completion Certificates for New Homes Fell by 8% Year-on-Year to May
According to data from the Ministry of Public Works, between January and May of this year, the construction of 17,171 new homes were completed in Spain, which represents a decline of 8% in comparison with the same period of the previous year when some 18,671 were completed. Thus, the number of completed homes returns to negative rates, after remaining positive up until April (2%), as in May alone they registered a decline of 36.7%. In 2015, the number of new homes completed in Spain accumulated eight consecutive years of declines and up until April this year a change in trend was indicated. Since the peak levels of 2007, when a total of 641,419 homes were constructed, the figure has fallen by 93% up to the end of 2015, with just 45,152 completed. Of the total number of homes completed up until May, some

El Mundo reported that, compared to a year earlier, housing construction by private developers fell by 8.4%, while in the case of public administrations it increased by 28%. Among the private initiative, some 10,160 of the properties related to corporations, with a year-on-year decline reaching 8%; 6,367 related to individuals and communities of owners (+4.9% y-o-y), and 219 to co-operatives (-67.5% y-o-y). In addition there were 164 completion certificates for other types of private developer projects. The Ministry’s data also shows that the liquidation value of the material execution of the works dropped by 14.7% up until may, to 2,102.1 million euros. kyero

Discover Lubrin & It’s Surrounding Areas
Lubrin is a centuries old white-washed village nestled in the Sierra Filabres Mountains with many lovely squares and an impressive central church. There are interesting back streets and great eating places with rooftop terraces. The coast from Lubrin will take a leisurely 45 minutes, driving along some beautiful roads with places to stop and just take in the wonderful vistas. The town boasts a gymnasium, swimming pool and public library all hidden away in the winding back streets. In addition there are good bars and restaurants, doctors’ surgery, pharmacy, banks and butchers. There is a steep climb through the ancient streets to the top of the village where there are panoramic views over the village and the beautiful surrounding countryside. The weekly Wednesday market brings people from all outlying villages. There are numerous fiestas throughout the year including the renowned Fiesta del Pan (Bread Festival), which honours San Sebastian, delicious local breads are baked and the donut shaped bread is thrown from the roof tops and balconies. In order to enjoy the atmosphere of these fiestas you can stay in one of the very good local B&Bs or Casa Rurals, there is something for everyone.

Factors to Consider When Pricing a Home for Sale services and amenities such as schools, shops, transport etc. However, El Mundo reported that there are also various factors that a potential buyer will not take into consideration when looking to make a purchase, such as the price the seller paid for the property in the past, the amount spent on it for improvements etc. or the emotional value of the property to the seller. Moreover, Alfa emphasises the necessity of putting the right price on from the start, as they say that not doing so will only help sell neighbouring homes – since if they are cheaper,
In Spain, more than 50% of the homes which are placed on the market for sale are listed at a price higher than recommended, which in the long run harms the interests of the seller. This is according to Jesús Duque, Vice President of the real estate company, Alfa Inmobiliaria, following a study of their network of 140 agencies throughout the country, which showed that when a home is listed above its correct market price, then the property usually ends up being sold for a price less than its value. Since housing prices are constantly changing, the company offers its recommendations on how to correctly price a home for sale and summarises the aspects to consider when doing so, such as: studying the market situation at that particular time; looking at prices of similar housing for sale; the capacity for financing; the true condition of the property, and the impression the home, area and location portrays in terms of available

than any potential buyer will feel that they have found an interesting opportunity – and result in fewer viewings, as jumping from one price range to a higher one inevitably reduces the number of interested parties. According to Duque, “the most interested buyers usually appear within the first 30 days, and that is when the property must have the right price. Thereafter, there is usually a significant drop in interest in the property which inevitably leads to lower prices, with the consequent loss of time and opportunities”. keyero

The Federal Reserve is close to hitting its targets for US employment and 2% inflation, according to the central bank's vice chairman, Stanley Fischer. In a speech in Colorado, the Fed's number two policymaker was upbeat about the economy's recovery and prospects. "We are close to our targets," he said on Sunday, adding that jobs growth had been "remarkably resilient". He did not mention interest rates, but the remarks are likely to fuel debate about when they may rise. Mr Fischer said this year's pace of jobs growth, although slower than in 2015, was "more than enough" for the labour market to continue to improve. He told a conference in Aspen that inflation outside of food and energy prices was "within hailing distance" of 2%, the Fed's target rate. In recent years, he said, the US economy had had to confront the Greek debt crisis, a rise in the strength of the dollar, and sporadic financial turbulence. 'Remarkable' "Yet, even amid these shocks, the labour market continued to improve: employment has continued to increase, and the unemployment rate is currently close to most estimates of the natural rate," Mr Fischer said. "I believe it is a remarkable, and perhaps underappreciated, achievement that the economy has returned to near-full employment in a relatively short time after the great recession, given the historical experience following a financial crisis," he said. One major concern, however, was the slowdown over the past few years in US productivity growth. If it persisted, Mr Fischer said, it would curtail jobs and wage growth. Ms Yellen is also expected to sound a positive note. Economists said it was unlikely that Mr Fischer would want to say anything that could be contradicted on Friday. Bbc.com

RemitEx: The Exhibition
Alqueria was the scene of frantic endeavour, marquees were being erected, streets steam-cleaned, litter collected and houses painted. Everyone in the Village was putting their ‘shoulders to the grindstone’ for the mutual good of the Republic. Some people even worked three of four hours a week, it was humbling to watch. Manuela wiped a tear from her eye as she surveyed the exertions of her fellow countrymen. RemitEx the exhibition, designed to restore confidence in Remitroot and its associated products after the evil Rodriquez had all but destroyed the goodwill built up over two millennia. Tents had been erected to demonstrate its important uses and downplay the side-effects. These included severe and lifelong addiction, swelling of the male organ, and a strange fungal foot-rot that turns the toes bright green and smells like the putrefying carcass of a estuarine crocodile. ‘Remitroot the alcohol’ naturally had the biggest tent. The whisky, rum, wine and beer derived from the Root were potent beverages and had enhanced effects on those whose mental state was in any way impaired. This guaranteed that the population of Alqueria lived their daily lives in a perpetual state of intoxication. ‘Remitroot the aphrodisiac’ was a sound proofed, pink quilted affair organised, operated and jealously guarded by the lovely
Manuela. ‘Remitroot the corrosion retardant’ This was a small not very interesting tent but highly lucrative, it was shared by ‘Remitroot the pipe lagger’. Customers to this venue would be directed to the first two tents and therefore be in no fit state to question inflated prices and vague delivery promises. Potential customers for all Remitroot products were promised free beer and dancing girls. Came the opening day of RemitEx and, rather unusually for Alqueria it went like a piece of Swiss clockwork. The beverage tent soon needed to send for resupply and the samples, free at first attracted rising prices proportional to the degree of intoxication of the would be customers. A veil should be perhaps drawn over the activities in ‘Remitroot the aphrodisiac’ tent, suffices to say those leaving were but a shadow of themselves on entering. Come the evening and fights had broken out in every venue. An alcohol induced free for all was in full swing in the beverage tent while a fist fight among those waiting to enter the aphrodisiac tent started when drunken queue jumpers tried to push themselves in. Sheer boredom in the anti-corrosion tent led to a mêlée of biting and kicking which seemed a more exciting alternative to the world of rust retardants. Manuela was well pleased. Remitroot once more took its rightful place as the world’s leading product offering immediate and intense intoxication, disturbing mind alteration and stimulation a stud stallion would be proud of. Alqueria was once more a going concern.

We were in the Cafetería at Hospital Inmaculada looking at the cooked food. The doyen of dinner serving appeared; Maria, an attractive toffee brown lady with a well-built figure and a fully developed sense of humour. The following conversation is a hopscotch of English and Spanish: Pete, English: ‘What’s that?’ Me, English: ‘Magra.’ Pete, English: ‘What’s magra?’ Me, English: It’s chopped up meat in sauce. You like magra,’ I added firmly. Pete, English: Pointing to another dish. ‘What’s that?’ It looked like a sort of bean stew. But I asked, in Spanish: ‘What’s that?’ Maria, Spanish: Estofado de calabacin y alubias.’ I decided it prudent to precis the description for Pete, so I answered in English: Bean stew.’ Pete’s mind was made up. In English with added pointing he said ‘I’ll have that (bean stew) and that (magra) Maria proceeded to dollop a hefty portion of bean stew onto a plate. ‘No, no, no!’ Pete protested. Maria, Spanish: ‘You don’t want estofado?’The plate hovered in noman’s land between us. Me, English: ‘Don’t you want stew?’ Pete, English: No Yes..No…Well, not that much. Tell her to tip come back.’ Maria, who must have a reasonable understanding of English due to the number she sees on a daily basis, replied in Spanish: I can’t do that. Once it is served I can’t put it back.’ She passed the plate to Pete, who immediately passed it to me as though it were a grenade with the pin pulled. I plonked it firmly on his tray. Pete, English, picking up the offending plate: ‘I don’t want all of it. Just some

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk of it’ Me, English and a little terse: ‘You can leave what you can’t eat.’ I retrieved the plate and put it down on his tray with firm determination. By this time Maria had entered into the spirit of the thing, and was smiling in a manner that would make even Scrooge lighten up a bit. Me, Spanish: ‘Men! Always creating problems!’ Maria, Spanish: ‘Men are always one big problem in all the world!’ We both laughed at our common understanding. The magra was a re-run of the bean stew scenario; Maria dished, I took control of the filled plate, complete with the command that he didn’t need to eat all of it. As we paid and left, I offered, in Spanish: ‘Men! Can’t live with them, can’t live without them!’ Maria, who was by this time in full-on laughter, agreed, but added, in Spanish: ‘But he is so guapo!’ ‘What did she say?’ Pete enquired urgently on the way to our table. ‘She said you were good-looking.’ Pete’s head promptly swelled to the size of a bucket, and he ate almost all of his dinner!

Dream job alert: this company will pay you to drink gin If there’s two things we love in life (other than, you know, our friends and family), it’s travelling to new places, and drinking gin. Not necessarily in that order. Which is why our ears pricked up when we heard that ILoveGin.com are searching to a ‘gintern’ to do just that. The monthly G&T club need someone to help them track down to a whole new world of tongue-titillating gins, tonics and tinctures. Writing on their website, they explain that they’re on the hunt for an “enthusiastic gin-loving” individual (no kidding), who will be more than happy to while away their time “ trying new gins, new mixers, finding new brands to work with, visiting distilleries, pairing gins and “ginspiring” us with their new-found knowledge”. Which, obviously, sounds amazing. Even better, however, is the fact that the lucky gintern will get to travel around the UK and Europe to attend launch events, meet with master distillers, and sample innovative new versions of mother’s ruin. “One day you might be up in Edinburgh tasting a new craft gin, the next going to a launch event in London for a new tonic water,” they explain. As if all that free booze weren’t incentive enough, the company is also offering a competitive intern salary, as well as the opportunity to set your own hours – and even work from home, if that’s what you’d prefer.

You can also expect plenty of goodies delivered straight to your doorstep every month, and, if you prove to be a ginspirational employee, they may even offer you a full-time position. If you’re thinking of applying for this role, there are, of course, a few basic must-have requirements. You must be over the age of 18, for obvious reasons, and you also need to hold a full driver’s license, and live in the UK. Oh, and you need to love gin… but surely that goes without saying? If this news psyched you up enough to quit your current job and throw caution to the wind, you can find the full job description and application form at stylist. co.uk. We'd wish you good luck, but, being as you'll probably be our direct competition for this one, we'll settle for a competitive glare across the internet instead... stylist.co.uk

Paul O’Grady? Lily Savage? O’Grady takes us back to life in the seventies and gives us a glimpse of his life from the age of 18. He presents us with a vivid and usually a sordid and seedy picture of the Birkenhead club scene followed by the equally sordid London scene, dens of inequity for a troubled soul whose lifelong ambition seems to be to get inebriated every night and wake up with a stinking hangover. Vanity and hedonistic pleasure dominated his life. At 18 he had to be “friggin’ gorgeous” dolled up in the tightest of garments to accentuate his sexuality and desirability before he could storm the club scene. His mother called it “tomcatting” and the expression “the devil rides out” is one of the phrases his mother used for his clubbing, dressed up to the eyeballs and on the pull! Her prejudice was more evident when she called it “debauchery “ and then lashed out at him with: “You fornicating, no-good, dirty big who-er.” Don’t get the wrong impression. His mother loved him BUT also worried about him always getting into trouble, especially with the police. At times the author allows us to see a vulnerable child, unsure of himself, immature and unable to face up to any kind of responsibilities. He was deeply affected by his father’s sudden death and made to feel guilty because of his troubled sexuality that created un-necessary tensions in the family. Mother had just had a near fatal heart-attack and was not expected to survive. Father was so shocked that HE then had an instantaneous heart attack and died immediately afterwards. Mother was “numb with shock” and far too ill to be allowed to bury her own husband. His father’s death left a “raw gaping wound”

The Devil Rides Out. Paul O’Grady.
and his guilt at causing his death was “growing heavier” as he quietly mourned the loss of his father’s “reassuring presence.” Surprisingly for me, he had some girlfriends and seemed like any other heterosexual male. He slept with Diane who was one of his girlfriends who became pregnant with Paul’s daughter. In between this “hysterical queen” act there was a parent trying to establish itself. At 18, Paul was too immature and unable to face up to any responsibilities and he admitted that his blood ran cold when he saw the baby. “Having sowed my wild oats I’d prayed for crop failure.” He was “going nowhere fast” or crudely put: “ up shit creek without a paddle.” Another big surprise was to agree to an arranged marriage to a lesbian. On paper this lasted 28 years. Very strange. The other side you don’t hear about concerns the physical graft, caring for the disabled and the most vulnerable when he worked for Camden Social Services or at the Convalescent Home and School. Stephen was one of his favourites at the home. He was 12 and had muscular dystrophy. He would bellow “Move your arse, spaz.” His head shook like a “bobble toy” but he was as mischievous and ruthless as the others in his abuse and insults. Also we find out about Moya with Down’s syndrome who would “drop her drawers” indiscriminately to Paul’s delight and to everyone else’s horror! Fraudster Robin was a conman “the type who would charm a maggot off a corpse.” Then we had Shirley, an escort girl who was going to see her Saudi Prince Abdul to engage in a bit of sexual fantasy. O’Grady describes her as “no clumsy slapper” but as a “seasoned pro.” The Hilton was where the illicit sex took place. O’Grady’s job was the same as a pimp but an upmarket one. His tip was £200. “The wages of sin weren’t death. Sin
was extremely well paid!” As an interesting diversion we hear about the author’s visit to East Berlin, Poland and Auschwitz with sobering r e c o l l e c t i o n. This was riveting. In Manila we are exposed to abject poverty and sexual trafficking that appalled the writer. It was a “dirty, sprawling, poverty-stricken metropolis” with a booming sex trade, reeking of exploitation. The desire to perform on stage seemed to be a niggling need throughout this period of life and his ambition is realised when he returns to London, to the Elephant and Castle the birthplace of Lily Savage. He called it a “ persistent theatrical itch.” He longed for the “mayhem at the circus” a combination of the Weimar Berlin cabaret, the vaudeville, burlesque but also something that was “quintessentially” British. To continue this interesting saga about O’Grady’s phoenix you will have to read the third volume and discover the delights of Lily Savage for yourself. Bantam Press:

McLaren preview the Belgian GP
A favourite with the McLaren drivers Jenson Button is hoping to enjoy a “positive weekend” at Spa. Jenson Button: “I love Spa! Eau Rouge is one of those fabled corners that drivers and fans always talk about – but it really is that special. The feeling of the sweep uphill through the corners is just awesome, every time. As well as being the longest circuit on the calendar, it also has an average speed of 230km/h (143mph) so it’s pretty quick! That means it’s pretty brutal on the cars – you’re at full throttle for almost three-quarters of the lap – so all the team and drivers will be working hard to manage all the different aspects of the car and react quickly to anything that crops up during the race. “The important thing, as always, is reliability, and because of the
nature of the Spa circuit it tends to be a race of attrition. The guys and girls back at MTC and also in Sakura are working hard to keep pushing the limits of our package, and I hope we can enjoy a smooth race from that point of view. I’ve always loved Spa right from the early days of my career – it still feels mega with every lap you do and never fails to put a smile on my face. It’s easily one of the best circuits on the calendar and definitely one of my favourites, so let’s see what we can do – I hope we can have a solid weekend.” Race 28th August 14:00 planetf1. com

MOJÁCAR HOSTS INAUGURAL OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT
The premiere “Torneo Villa Mojácar” was recently held at Mojácar’s Marina Golf Course in. Its successful introduction to the province’s summer golf calendar was marked by a high level of participation. Organized by Mojácar Council along with Marina Golf and, sponsored by Bridgestone, the competition attracted 90 players who all enjoyed an excellent morning’s golf. The weather was very considerate to the players which led to very respectable results being noted in the cards delivered to the clubhouse. The awards in the individual stableford were divided into two categories and there was special prize for the best round, according to handicap. The winner in the first stableford category was John Graves, followed by Gustavo Renno. Juan Lopez Saez won first place in second category and Francisco González García, at his home club, took second place.
The scratch award was won by Javier Abellán Berruezo, also on his home turf. The prizes were presented by Mojácar Councillor for Sports, Ana Garcia, who thanked all the participants for attending this first tournament. She also expressed gratitude to the Marina Golf Club, for the good organization and willingness to host this sporting event. She went on to declare the event a great success and confirmed it would take place at Marina Golf again next year. Players and their families were invited to visit Mojácar for next year’s event and also to enjoy the beaches and the many attractions of the town. The event closed with an eagerly awaited prize draw of Bridgestone golf equipment for the participating players and a cocktail, which was a perfect end to a relaxing day. It is also worth noting that despite being the first year of the competition, it is already included in the official Lorca Golf Club circuit.
