Roquetas and Aguadulce known as Las Salinas. The protest march was organised by the Posidonia Association and was supported by the local IU (United Left) political party. Most of the protesters were dressed in Roman costume, wearing tunics and carrying brightly coloured banners and accompanied by trumpets and drums. Posidonia spokesman, Enrique Alonso, said this stretch of land has remained practically unaltered since the Roman times, when there was a settlement here, hence the theme. It was a festive occasion with music and dancing; there were workshops and activities for children designed to raise their awareness of the importance of the area. Historian Gabriel Rodriguez, from the University of Almeria gave a number of talks and volunteers handed out leaflets to passers-by and collected signatures from people who oppose the development. Over 30,000 signatures have already been collected in the two months since the plans were unveiled. As I reported last month, the council made the shock announcement in August that they had given provisional planning permission for a huge development on the site. The outline proposals mentioned up to 7,000 residential properties, many of which would be in highrise buildings, a number of hotels and restaurants and a shopping mall. Since the ending of salt production back in the eighties, the area has become famous as a wildlife sanctuary and is now home to hundreds of varieties of flora and fauna, many of them protected species. Such is the importance of the wetlands, the Environment Agency of Spain granted it special status in 2002, naming it as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Walkers, runners and cyclists regularly use its paths and tracks for recreational purposes. Birdwatchers and naturalists frequent the reed beds, old salt flats and ponds looking out for many of the rare breads which live there. Ironically, twenty years ago, the council spent a lot of money developing the area as a natural park, constructing the footpaths and cycle tracks and erecting viewing platforms, seating areas

and information boards. And now it seems they are planning to go back on a promise they made at the time, saying this tract of land would remain as it is, in order to provide a natural buffer between the two towns of Roquetas and Aguadulce. Their reason being, they didn’t want to see the two towns joining up and thus becoming, quote, ‘Yet another coastal urban sprawl.’ Well, with the announcement of these latest plans, they have clearly changed their minds on that score. The mayor, Gabriel Amat is already facing a number of fraud and malpractice allegations concerning the granting of contracts for work in the municipality over a ten year period. His son-in-law has also been named with him in a large Guardia Civil document of evidence against the pair which is currently being scrutinised by the Regional Prosecutors Office. The 40 hectares of land in question has an estimated value of 120 million euros and interestingly, the council has regularly been buying up plots over the years. This land will presumably have to be bought from the owners – the council included – before work can begin and then of course, there’s the thorny question of who will be given the contracts? There’s a strong body of opinion who think the contracts have already been allotted, which if the council’s past is anything to go by, those rumours could well be true. Opposition party council members are levelling claims of ‘shady’ dealing at the mayor’s office and more protests are planned over the coming weeks at Las Salinas. The organisers will be asking once again, why there’s a need for 7,000 new homes, when there are still an estimated 14,000 empty or un-completed one’s in the municipality, a legacy of the property boom that went bust ten years ago. There already seems to be a nasty smell surrounding this story and it’s a smell that has dogged this Gabriel Amat administration for some years.

KIDS who play ball in the streets and squares of Albox (Almería province) will have them confiscated, m a y o r Francisco To r r e c i l l a s has warned. “By the end of October, I've given orders for at least 10 footballs to be 'arrested',” the leader of independents Ciudadanos Libres y Unidos ('Free and United Citizens') said on the town hall's Twitter site. He even posted a photo of the first ball 'arrested' on his mayor's Facebook site. “Parents – ladies and gentlemen – you don't play in the Plazas,” he warned. The reasons, he says, are that children are careless about kicking balls into windows, walls, flowerpots and other private residential, commercial and public fixtures, and fail to notice pedestrians, often lobbing a football right into them or their path. But residents in Albox, and elsewhere in Spain, have launched harsh criticisms online, questioning where else the children are supposed to play. Other than on urbanisations – residential complexes at some distance from towns – Spanish homes even in villages are mainly apartments or, in lesser number, terraced townhouses, meaning domestic gardens are extremely rare. Public parks and gardens do not normally have huge strips of open space, tending to be taken up with ornamental plant features, trees, benches and playground apparatus. thinkspain

Suspected rat on board grounds Barcelona-Doha flight for over 24 hours

A RAT on board grounded 250 passengers at Barcelona airport and delayed their Qatar Airways flight to Doha on Thursday, airport authorities confirmed today. It was an air hostess who alerted her colleagues of the creature's presence just as the travellers were about to board, and the gate closed immediately. Passengers were given a voucher for bottles of water and sandwiches as they were not sure how long they would have to wait. But a thorough search did

not show any signs of the rat, which is thought to have sneaked onto the airbus during a connecting flight stop in the Philippines. Traps were laid, but were empty when checked several hours later. In the end, as Qatar Airways was unable to put all the passengers on another aircraft, it put them up in hotels and left the craft in Terminal 1 for over 24 hours. Finally, the aircraft returned, empty, to its base in Doha late last Friday. thinkspain

Google News launches fact check label

Google on desktop and mobile will now feature, fact check, which will add a label next to news stories in search results Google has launched a new feature, fact check, which will add a label next to news stories in search results. Fact check will appear with other news organisations in Google News and will, Google says, "shine a light on its efforts to divide fact from fiction". Richard Gingras, Google's head of news, added it will "help readers find fact checking in large news stories". He said sites which already have a fact checking service can apply to be included to appear in search results. "You'll see the tagged articles in the expanded story box on news. google.com and in the Google News & Weather iOS and Android apps, starting with the US and the UK," he added in a blogpost. Google will determine whether a fact check is

needed for a news story using the claim review technique. It already labels stories with tabs such as opinion, related and local source. Fact checking is something that has become increasingly popular in the past few years. According to the Duke University Reporter’s Lab, there are more than 100 fact checking sites online including the BBC’s own Reality Check. However, not all fact check sites run by algorithm have been as fortunate when it comes to fulfilling their intended purpose. Facebook overhauled the Trending feature on its site in August to make posts more automated after claims of left-wing bias. Google’s fact check comes in time for the final run-up to next month’s US presidential election. The New York Times also has a fact check site which is keeping tabs on the campaign for the Oval Office. BBC

Experts will discuss the finds at a special congress at the end of the month. BBC

Gerard Pique wants to be president

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique believes he can take the unusual route into club politics rather than management when his playing career comes to an end by becoming Barça president. The Catalan giants are run by a president voted for by the club's near 150,000 members with mandates lasting up to six years. "I want to be president of Barça. It is the step I would like to take when I retire. I don't see myself as a coach, I don't think I would enjoy it that much," Pique told Catalan TV station TV3. "I could do very well for this club as president because it is my passion," he said. Pique, 29, announced his decision to retire from international

football after the 2018 World Cup earlier this week due to the latest in a series of attacks on his commitment to play for Spain. During Spain's 2-0 win at Albania on Tuesday was falsely accused of cutting the colours of the Spanish flag off his longsleeved shirt as the colours appeared only on the shortsleeved version of the shirt. Pique has also been consistently jeered by Spain fans when playing for the national team, in part due to his public barbs at Real Madrid and for his outspoken support for a referendum on Catalan independence.

Thousands march in Europe against EU-Canada trade deal Thousands of people demonstrated Saturday in France, Spain and Poland against a EU-Canada free trade deal and a far more ambitious agreement with the United States. Activists charge that the Canada deal will set a dangerous precedent and open the way for a similar but far more sweeping pact with Washington, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). TTIP has already run into trouble, with the EU saying it will not be agreed before President Barack Obama leaves office in January, as was initially planned. "The European governments must today hear the refusal of the their people," said Attac, an international movement seeking alternatives in the globalisation process, and one of the main organisers of the protest. In France, about 1,200 people marched in Paris, according to the police, but the organisers put the number at 5,000. There were also protests in Lyon and Toulouse. The EU-Canada pact has already run into trouble with lawmakers in the small Belgian region of Wallonia on Friday voting to block it. The parliament vote in the Frenchspeaking part of southern Belgium threatens to derail the long-delayed signing by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of the pact, known as CETA, in Brussels later this month. In order to be signed by Trudeau at

the EU-Canada summit on October 27, the deal must first be backed by all 28 EU member states at a trade ministers' meeting on Tuesday. CETA was formally concluded in 2014 after five years of talks. Except for a few sensitive agricultural products, CETA abolishes virtually all tariffs between Canada and the EU. Acquiescing to a European demand, Canada has agreed to substantially open up its public procurement to EU companies, which until now were basically barred from such contracts. Its backers say the deal will boost trade in goods and services between Europe and Canada by more than 20 percent, and total EU GDP by about 12 billion euros ($13.4 billion) per year. But it is opposed by a wide array of groups, who say it is a test model to push through the even more controversial EU-US trade deal, still in negotiation. "These accords use growth to put into question social and environmental norms to help benefit multinationals," said French unionist Murielle Guilbert. Around 1,000 also people marched in Warsaw and a few hundred in Krakow. "We don't want TTIP, CETA," they chanted. "Human souls first and profits later," they shouted. Several thousands marched in the Spanish capital Madrid. Many shouted: "No to poverty, inequality and to TTIP." http://www.expatica.com

Dozens of Catalan cities refuse to celebrate Spain’s national day

Many Catalans associate the holiday with the Franco regime. DOZENS of towns and cities in Catalan refused to celebrate or even recognise Spain’s national holiday yesterday. Some 40 municipalities across the region ignored court orders to close for the day to mark Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the Americas in 1492. Many Catalans associate the holiday with the millions of indigenous Americans who died as a result of the explorer’s discovery and the Franco regime that brutally repressed the region. Deputy mayor of Badalona

Josep Tellez said ‘there’s nothing to celebrate’ as he tore up a judge’s decree in front of city hall. Xavier Garcia Albiol, regional president of the Popular P a r t y , criticized municipalities’ ‘brazen and dis ob e die nt attitude’. He said: “There should be some sort of reaction from the justice because if not we’re going to end up turning this country into a jungle.” Left-wing lawmakers proposed taking down a statue of Columbus in Barcelona and banning the holiday last month. They said: “The celebration of the arrival of Christopher Columbus to America represents the intolerable act of the glorification of colonialism and imperialism.” http://www.expatica.com

Staying Warm this winter

Whether you’re stuck in a drafty office building all day or simply want to slash that heating bill, there are plenty of low-tech ways to keep warm without cranking up the thermostat or busting out the space heater. Have a hot bev Drinking something warm raises your core body temp. But there’s a littleknown, crucial caveat: You have to be bundled. The hot beverage makes you sweat, and if that sweat is allowed to evaporate, it will actually make your colder. You’ll want to skip the hot toddy too. Don’t be fooled by the warm, fuzzy feelings you get with the first few sips: Alcohol actually lowers your body temperature. Become a baker Just because you’ve vowed to stay away from that thermostat dial doesn’t mean your house has to feel arctic. Luckily your home has another heat source: the oven. Using it will heat up your kitchen quickly. Plus you’ll be left with a fresh-from-the-oven batch of chocolate chip cookies to combat any residual chills.

Surprising tricks to give you body confidence

Feel better about your body at every age and life stage with our smart tips

Stand up straight The quickest way to boost your inner confidence is to change the way you sit, stand or walk. 'Looking confident means feeling more confident and the reverse is true, so self-diminishing behaviours like hugging your torso or standing with your legs crossed at the ankles will send signals to your subconscious that you are somehow under attack,' says psychologist Judi James, author of Being Confident(Vermillion, £12.99 from Amazon). 'Pull up full height, roll your shoulders back and down and splay your feet slightly. When you sit place your elbows on the arms of the chair and do smile.' Make gratitude your attitude

There are lots of studies showing the link between gratitude and wellbeing. So, make time to appreciate and reward your body for the amazing job it does. For example, you may not like your flabby tummy, but feel grateful for the job your body did carrying your children when you were pregnant. To continue being positive about your shape (or any other aspect of your life), why not start a gratitude journal? Every day, write down your thoughts about each part of your body and why you appreciate it. Give off beautiful vibes Whatever your life stage and body shape, watch out for the messages you're unconsciously giving to others. 'We tell other people and ourselves how good we look or not,' says Judi. After all, you could have a body like Gisele but any shape can appear unattractive if low self-esteem comes through in your body language. 'It's the way you carry yourself that counts,' says Judi. 'Never criticise your shape out loud and don't make comparisons.' Remember, no one else is 100% body confident either 'When we lack confidence, we are actually experiencing fear,' says Judi. 'We're not afraid of our own bodies, we are afraid of social disapproval if our bodies are not seen as "perfect".

'Very few women are happy with their bodies. I have worked with models with enviable body shapes and they were some of the most body-obsessed and distressed people I know.' Next time you feel insecure about your shape, know you're not the only one. Ignore other people's flaws It's fine to compare yourself favourably with other people, but if you feel yourself thinking something critical about someone else's body, stop and think of something complimentary about them instead. Why? If you frequently judge others, you may start to think they are judging you in the same way – and this can make you feel self-conscious. Think gorgeous instead! Forget 'anti-ageing' and think 'positive ageing' It's important to accept and love your body as you get older and change. 'Ageing has begun to seem like a perversion in modern life with anyone sporting natural signs of it rather than rushing off to have work done increasingly being viewed as odd,' says Judi. 'So, make your decision. You can either try to stop the clock or be who you really are. If you decide on the latter, use this mantra to yourself and other people: "I am happy with how I look"' Help yourself feel fabulous Exercise regularly (when we exercise, our bodies release feel-good chemicals called endorphins which boost our happiness) and work in some simple pampering into your daily routine to help you celebrate, care for and reconnect with your body. You deserve it – try using a gorgeous smelling aromatherapy shower gel or massage oil to help you look and feel good. http://www.prima.co.uk

Let’s be honest, it could just be that you may just be in need of some light exercise and a change in Lung cancer can also mean that pressure would be put on your airways, or they may start to get blocked. This may narrow the tubes that carry air into your lungs, making it difficult for the air to get through.

It may sound surprising, but breathlessness if often one of the first symptoms of heart disease. You may also have symptoms such as from nausea or increased sweating. The main point is, don’t dismiss it as not being a big deal. Always book an appointment with your GP if you’re worried about any symptoms you have. The quicker you catch something then the quicker you can get treatment.

With tickets selling out a week before the event, Maloans Bar in Albox was the venue for the latest show, and it was soon buzzing with excited voices and big smiles as the audience waited to see the latest additions to the Gladrags Boutique range. Jenni Rock compared the event in a baby pink wig to show here support for Breast Cancer Awareness month and to highlight the need to raise much needed funds for her local chosen charity that helps people and their families that are battling Cancer. You couldn´t help but be impressed with the 11 models who displayed the latest designs with their usual flair and enthusiasm. The models’ ages ranged from 30 to 75, proving once again that the Gladrags Boutique clothing is suitable for ladies of all ages. But the day wasn’t just about showcasing the clothing – it was also to raise money for Walk 4 Life Arboleas. The €930 that was raised in ticket sales, Gladrags donated to the Charity plus a further 500€ from the raffle that was sponsored by Almeria Homes was also donated. Jenny Rock said after the event: "To raise 1430€ in one afternoon just shows what we can do when a local community works together and also show the generosity of people in this area. I can´t say a big enough Thank you to everybody who helped make this event such a success. Jean Bircher, the Walk 4 Life Vice President told us, “The Walk 4 Life team are massively grateful to Jenni for organising and hosting a fabulous fashion show for so many people to enjoy. The €1430 raised is a huge boost to our fund and enables us to continue helping people with cancer.” Jenni would like to thank her 11 models (Sue, Carole, Carol, Nicki, Jill, Ella, Mags, Hannah, Jacqui, Jean and Claire), for providing their time free of charge for the event.

The Story of Beautiful Girl Rachel Simon

“There was a baby. A couple on the run. And they were different. They were not right.” Rachel Simon’s literary career started with her bestselling memoir of her intellectually challenged sister, Beth in “Riding the Bus with my Sister.” Her motivation for writing both books was not just about Beth but other less fortunate individuals who were institutionalised. In 1972 a programme was shown on US tv about the Willowbrook State School which “horrified” her family. “I came to feel remorse that institutional tragedies had unfolded in a parallel universe” one that was alien to Simon. There seemed to have been a “secret history” which had been “kept out of sight for so long.” It wasn’t just the American “secret shame” but worldwide. Doris Lessing uses shocking but real images based on a German lunatic asylum in “The Fifth Child.” In the UK Panorama exposed the “shocking treatment” of its disabled residents at Winterbourne View Private Hospital in Bristol recently. The Daily Express reported on the story with a shocking headline that speaks for itself: “Evil Carers Caught on TV Jailed For Reign of Cruelty.” Another motivating factor was Dave Bakke’s book: “God Knows his Name: The True Story of John Doe No.24.” It was based on an African American, labelled as “feebleminded” and thrown into an institution like a piece of garbage, branded like an animal, No 24 because no-one knew his name or cared enough to find out. Society dehumanised its most vulnerable. Simon admitted to being “stupefied, horrified and outraged” and the novel became a strong political statement. The book is a tribute to the resilience and courage of Lynnie who was “exiled into the wilderness” of a Pennsylvanian School for the Incurable and

Feebleminded, a place for “defective” children, like a “trap that snaps closed on an animal.” She was originally classified as an upper division “imbecile” and then promoted to the “moron” category. Shocking. No.42 is the love of Lynnie’s life and we as the reader share his suffering and misery. Martha is a retired teacher who abandons her security and promises to “hide” the baby that is bequeathed to her by two runaways, one stormy night. This is Martha’s second chance after ironically being denied motherhood with the loss of her own “defective” child a long time ago “the cruelest chaos imaginable.” After the initial shock she relishes the challenge but her life is turned upside down with constant hideaways to avoid anyone finding out the true identity of the child. Then there is Kate, an attendant at the school who recognises Lynnie’s gift and shows love towards her amidst the abuse and horror. Salvation at a price. Beautiful people full of love in a world full of hate for deformity or simply, disability. Martha keeps a meticulous record of Julia’s life with memorabilia attached to give her some kind of identity when she is no longer able to care for her: “Even after I have passed away, you have only to look in the face of anyone you love and you will see me. I am here for you always.” Unconditional love. Homan’s love for Lynnie is also unconditional, precious and long-lasting. The lighthouse is symbolically a safe haven for Lynnie and the story begins and ends on this note. “Can you imagine a better day than this?” with freedom from oppression and dollops of love to finish a lovely tale. I leave you with a similar rhetorical question: Can you imagine a better novel to read than this one? Windmill Books. ISBN: 978-009955838-5

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help, you can contact me to make an appointment at my workshop or clinic (which is at Maloan’s bar in Albox). << Technology Addiction Part 4>> As promised I will show you the 2 easiest and most powerful ‘Hooks’ that the Technology Industry use to get you and then, more importantly, keep you! The first thing that you have to understand is that it is all about the eyes, and keeping them glued to the screen as long as possible. Whether it’s teasing you with the possibility of a great game upgrade, if you wait long enough, or with the video content you want to see if you’ll sit and watch for 20 seconds — it’s all a game of keeping you in front of your computer or mobile device for as long as possible. This isn’t an evil plan. It’s simply the fact that your constant presence and attention at the screen is gold dust for advertisers! So Technique Number 1: FOMO or the Fear Of Missing Out! Remember those days when you’d get to school or work and everyone would talk about something amazing that happened on TV? Or what about the big game you missed and while everyone stood around talking, you’re standing there not knowing what to say, because you didn’t see (not missed) whatever they are talking about! This fear drove people for decades, to try to do what everyone else is doing — to follow what everyone else is following. The fear of missing out is central to the concept of group-think. Today, it drives people to check text messages while driving, to answer a call while having dinner with the family, or to post to Twitter or Facebook even when going through a medical emergency (I’ve literally seen people post to Facebook that they had to go to the emergency room). Dr. John M. Grohol explains this phenomenon in his article for “Psych Central” is a desire for newer and better connections with other human beings. The “grass is always greener” mentality, where something must be going on somewhere

else that better than what’s going on here, right now. “It’s not ‘interruption,’ it’s connection. But wait a minute… it’s not really ‘connection’ either. It’s the potential for simply a different connection. It may be better, it may be worse — we just don’t know until we check.” As more websites and mobile-based social apps allow more of us to connect to one another with our computers and mobile devices, this is only getting worse. The potential for a new connection and new insight into what’s going on somewhere else is becoming much more frequent, and interrupting our daily lives several times an hour or more. “The fear of missing out (FOMO) — on something more fun, on a social date that might just happen on the spur of the moment — is so intense, even when we’ve decided to disconnect, we still connect just once more, just to make sure.” Technique Number 2: You’re Not Alone. There are thousands of anecdotes on the web from people who are ‘lonely’. There are porn sites, lonely hearts sites, meeting sites and lets not forget Facebook, which was created so the pervert who owns it could look at photos of the college girls. The availability of the Internet in nearly every home, makes it a cheap and easy “solution”. It reduces the need for actual social interaction to accomplish tasks like shopping and work, further isolating an individual who could benefit the most from social experiences. Technology is everywhere, and this issue is only getting worse as it filters into our schools, our smart homes, and even our transportation systems. Good news: there are things you can do this very moment to alleviate and maybe even put a stop to your overwhelming dependence on technology for your emotional “fix”. Even if you’re neck-deep in a tech addiction that seems impossible to escape — there’s hope! Next week we will start to look at the methods to overcome Technology Addiction.

Home sales bounce back in August, but Brexit effect starting to show up in Alicante and Malaga

The number of home sales inscribed in the Spanish property register in August was 20% up on the same month last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), as the market recovery appeared to get back on track after an abrupt halt in July. However, a bounce back in recorded sales was expected simply because the inscription of many previous sales was delayed in July due to a recent Supreme Court ruling on abusive clauses in mortgage contracts, which meant that property registrars suspended the inscription of sales tied to mortgages affected by the ruling. This has distorted the figures, though it’s reasonable to assume that recorded sales would have grown anyway in August, just not by so much. Resales were up 25%, and new home sales up by 3%, another month of growth for new home sales providing further evidence that the years of big declines are now in the past. to lead the recovery by a wide margin with sales up 36% in the year to August, followed by Almeria up 26%, and Barcelona up 25%. Growth in the Balearics is being driven by resurgent German demand, whilst in Barcelona demand is ever more internationally diversified. Both destinations are also seeing record number of tourist visitors, which is starting to cause political tensions with regard to access to housing. Looking just at sales recorded in August alone by region, searching for signs of a Brexit impact on Malaga (Costa del Sol), Alicante (Costa Blanca), and Murcia, where the British are the biggest group of foreign buyers, sales are still growing, but significantly less than other regions that attract foreign buyers. This probably reflects lower British demand due to the impact of Brexit on British budgets and confidence. by Mark Stücklin Everything you need to know about property in Spain http://www.spanishpropertyinsight. com

The state of the industry was reviewed, and predictions made, coinciding with a slew of forecasts from other sources: • T he real estate recovery is going hand in hand with economic recovery, fuelled by lower energy prices, low mortgage rates, and growing employment, with 1.3 million more jobs created. • N ew home building is rising fast (from a low base), with building licences up 27% in Spain between January and May, and 66% in Madrid. • H ouse prices are up 7% in Madrid and 9% in Barcelona. • T he inventory of new homes for sale has

Bernardos is consistently the most bullish voice around. • B arcelona and Madrid are “really hot markets where the recovery is intense and dangerous,” where prices are rising by “20% driven by the appetite of foreign investors, who see these capitals as part of the Champions’ League of cities in the world,” says Bernardos, referring to specific areas of the two cities in particular. the hot areas are fun from Atocha to the Plaza de Castilla, and in Barcelona they include the Eixample, Les Corts, and the Ciutat Vella Old Town. L and prices increases an annualised 6.6% in Q2, which points toward rising house prices in the pipeline, say Caixabank Research. Land prices are a leading indicator that anticipate house price trends “by a few quarters” they say, whilst also pointing out that booming mortgage lending “continues to support the recovery” with new mortgage lending up 27% in July. B ernardos thinks prices are on course to hit their 2007 peaks by 2018, and then stabilise around +3% in 2019. B BVA Research forecast housing starts up 40% this year, and the glut to disappear in all but the worst locations. C BRE España forecast demand for new homes around 180,000 between 2016 and 2025, most of all in Madrid, where 15% of new homes will be built. IESE business school professor José Luis Suárez forecasts new homes demand will be 100,000 until 2020, rising to 140,000 thereafter. • B ernardos says 175,000 in 2017, 235,000 in 2018, rising to 350,000 in 2020. • In terms of overall sales, Suárez forecasts 505,000 home sales in 2017, 530,00 in 2018, and 540,000 in 2019, a big improvement on the crisis years but a far cry from the 900,000 boomtime peak. • T he real estate servicer Solvia forecast 450,000 home sales this year, and average price increase of 3.2% by Mark Stücklin Everything you need to know about property in Spain ht t p://w w w. s p ani s h propertyinsight.com

Apps to Help You Get Stuff Done Around the House Tackle your DIY projects with these tools Pity the summertime. All year, we long for better weather, using this season as a repository for our plans. I’ll paint the house in the summer. I’ll plant a garden in the summer. I’ll reorganize the garage in — you guessed it — the summer. But all those plans jamming up our calendar doesn’t leave much time for anything fun. These seven apps can help you keep track of your various household chores and projects, so you can spend more time getting things done and less time keeping track of them. BrightNest From keeping things clean to making them colorful, Brightnest, developed by the clean freaks behind Angie’s List, is loaded with suggestions on how to make your home a better place to live. With categories of customized tips (moneysaving, cleaning, eco-friendly, healthy, cooking, and creative) based on the makeup of your home, there are plenty of great ways to pull inspiration from the app. Flag some as your favorite, and create a schedule for performing the tasks either later or regularly. Never forget to disinfect your garbage disposal — or how best to do it — again. BrightNest is available for free on Android and iOS. The Family Handyman DIY Tip Genius For decades, Readers Digest’s Family Handyman Magazine has been a source of advice for conscientious homeowners. This app, curated from the magazine’s

troves of back issues, is full of tips, tricks, and ideas for people looking to make their dwelling a tidier place. From building and remodeling to lawn and garden, there’s a wide range of content to draw from. Or, you could pull tips at random to gradually become the master of your domain. But be advised, this free app is just a small taste of the full maintenance tips here. So don’t hesitate to invest $5 in the “pro” version of the app, which has more home improvement ideas than you’ll know what to do with. The Family Handyman DIY Tip Genius is available for free on Android and iOS. Home Maintenance Manager If you’re one of those fix-it freaks who has a half dozen projects going at once, say hello to your new supervisor. This app does it all, from reminding you to conduct periodic maintenance to tracking projects across multiple properties. And with a history feature, it’s easy to look back and see the last time you performed a task, from checking the back flow on your lawn sprinkler, to cleaning your furnace filters. Home Maintenance Manager is available for $3.99 on iOS. Home Styler Interior Design For a lot of people, seeing is believing. That means when it comes time to make a radical change to their place, they’re going to have doubts until they get a visual. This app, made possible by one of the most powerful 3D-rendering engines on the market, puts professional-level

graphics right on your smartphone. It works by starting with a snapshot of your space. Then, you can browse from thousands of design products to see how they’d look in your space. You can also use it to find an interior designer in your area to help guide your tastes, or you can flip through other users’ concepts to get more inspiration for your own home. Home Styler Interior Design is available for free on Android and iOS. How Your House Works Many homeowners — especially younger ones — have little idea how the various systems in their houses actually function. That’s a curious thing, especially since most of that technology has been around for decades. This informative app is overflowing with everything from air conditioning to plumbing know-how. It’s w2ritten by home improvement experts, backed with easy-to-follow illustrations, fully searchable by keywords, and loaded with tips on keeping your appliances running smoothly. How Your House Works is available for $2.99 on Android and iOS. Thumbtack Sometimes projects can get out of control, or you simply need a helping hand to add the finishing touches. Thumbtack connects users to a network of professionals who submit bids for work. Reviewed by other Thumbtack users, this network of professionals is available across all 50 U.S. states,

making Thumbtack an excellent resource for DIYers ready to throw in the towel. And with a wide array of contractors available on the service — including music teachers, yoga instructors, and event planners — there’s even the possibility for some personal improvement when your home job is done. Thumbtack is available for free on iOS. Zillow Digs One reason people get bit by the home improvement bug in the summertime is because houses listed for sale are in peak condition, making all the neighbors jealous. People browse real estate websites not just to find a new home, but to get a peek into nearby houses, getting inspired on ways to keep up with the Joneses. This app, developed by Zillow, shares all that intelligence without snooping on your neighbors. With project estimates for kitchen and bathroom projects — often the most expensive and difficult to gauge — it can be a real eye-opener for homeowners before they put the first hole in a wall. Be sure to download this one well before you pick up a hammer. Zillow Digs is available for free on iOS

October 2016

Where to go in autumn Now the bulk of the tourists have packed their suitcases and headed home, Autumn can actually be a good time to hit the coast. Prices drop in September and October, and while the weather isn't guaranteed to provide sun tanning opportunities, it's still likely to be bright and warm. Hedge your bets weather-wise by opting for a city with a beach, like Barcelona, Málaga or Valencia: that way there'll still be plenty to do if the sun doesn't shine. As Autumn rolls on, it's a good time to head inland and visit cities that are just too damn hot in summer, such as Madrid, Seville and Córdoba. If you aren't looking for a city break, the colder weather is ideal for cosying up in Spain's heartland of the Comunidad de Madrid, Castilla la Mancha and CastillaLeón. Towns (and yes, small cities) like Cuenca, León, Salamanca and Segovia are easily walkable, with cute cascos antiguos (old quarters), enough beautiful buildings and monuments to keep you entertained – but not so many as to put under pressure to frantically sight-see. Even better, the cuisine in

It's undeniably Autumn (or fall, if you're from across the pond). The leaves have started to turn, there's a chill in the air in the mornings and evenings. Most commonly associated with sun and sand beach holidays, Spain isn't just a summer holiday destination: with such a diverse landscape and many more hours of sunshine than the UK, it's worth visiting in every season.

these regions seems designed with Autumn in mind: Castille specializes in hearty fare such as Segovia's suckling pig (cochinillo asado), roast lamb and Burgos's famous morcilla (blood sausage). October is clearly a big month for patron saints: Ávila also pays homage to its patrona, Santa Teresa. On 15 October, this normally staid city celebrates with parades of giant fallasstyle sculptures, an offering of flowers to the saint – and fireworks. The week surrounding the 15th offers a full calendar of bullfights, concerts and other events. Now the temperature has dropped and the countryside's looking a little less parched, Autumn's a good time to make for the sierra. Although Spain's more commonly associated with mar than montaña, there's actually plenty of mountainous territory too, so wherever you are, you won't be too far from some sierra. Whether you're a keen hiker or an idle wanderer who prefers mountain villages, there will be something to satisfy you. Good escapes include the

Both have plenty of good-value accommodation including little hotels, apartments and casas rurales (country cottages). If you're staying in the city, Autumn's a busy time on the old events calendar. The vuelta al cole (back to school) spirit in Spain extends much further than studying, with all the cultural events on hold over summer starting up again. In addition to festivals such as Seville's Bienal de Flamenco (held in even years), you'll find a full calendar of theatre, opera and dance performances in Spanish cities. It's also the time of year

when markets (both of the clothing and farmers' varieties) get going again after their summer holidays, so make sure to check out Madrid's Mercado de Motores. You can find details of other cities' flea markets here. Autumn's a good time for live music too, with festivals such as Monkey Week in El Puerto de Santa Maria and Bilboloop in Bilbao. QUESTION: I am trying to help my mother who has very bad health and wishes to move back to the UK but has not managed to sell her Spanish property yet. From a legal point are there any matters to take care of before she comes back ? ANSWER 1. Make sure her Spanish will is in good order. There have been some changes to the laws recently which make it convenient to have a solicitor take a look at it. 2. Locate the title deeds to the property and their NIE numbers. 3. Make sure internet banking is set up on her Spanish bank account. 4. Your mother may wish to consider signing a power of attorney for you to deal with her Spanish assets (in case a buyer is found and

she does not wish or is not able to visit Spain). 5. Look in to the advantages/disadvantages of selling quickly now versus holding on and waiting for a better price. From a tax point of view, if she is a resident and over 65, there is a certain advantage to selling before she loses her resident status in Spain, as she is entitled to a 100% exemption from capital gains tax. 6. Meet her solicitor before you leave in case you later need to deal with things remotely. Depending on your circumstances there could be other things to do, but I would at least cover these items.

RT says the bank gave no explanation for its decision. It said the entire Royal Bank of Scotland Group, of which NatWest is part, was refusing to service RT. The broadcaster, previously known as Russia Today, says NatWest wrote to its London office saying: "We have recently undertaken a review of your banking arrangements with us and reached the conclusion that we will no longer provide these facilities." The bank said its decision was final and it is "not prepared to enter into any discussion." A letter posted online by the channel appears to show that the freeze is not in effect yet. It warns that banking facilities will be "cancelled and closed" on 12 December. Reaction in Russia MP Sergei Zheleznyak, from the ruling "United Russia" party, told the privately-owned Interfax

news agency: "We will be demanding an explanation from Britain's official authorities in connection with this situation." Mr Zheleznyak, who sits on the international affairs committee of the State Duma (parliament's lower house), called NatWest's refusal to offer its banking services "outrageous" and "an infringement of the rights of journalists". A member of the Russian parliament's upper house, Igor Morozov, has called for the BBC's bank accounts in Russia to be "arrested" as a reprisal. RT chief Ms Simonyan said the closure included the personal accounts of some senior staff working in the UK. She told Russian state media: "They haven't explained the reasons and I think they can't explain them because there can't be any reasons. We have an absolutely transparent operation there, absolutely transparent funding. There have never been any complaints in this regard at all. "They have failed to defeat us by simply vilifying us, by picking on our broadcast, so they decided to try the banking flank: 'Try broadcasting when all your accounts have been closed.' Yet we will try." RT, which is run by the Kremlin, has previously been sanctioned by UK broadcasting regulator Ofcom for biased reporting. This included claims that the BBC "staged" a chemical weapons attack for a news report on Syria. Russian media outlets have made inroads into the UK recently. The state-funded Sputnik news agency set up in Edinburgh in August to broadcast live radio programmes from Scotland. It said its goal was "telling the untold" to Scottish and UK audiences, although critics say it will act as a Kremlin mouthpiece. Bbc.com

Famous for Fifteen Minutes

Jóse Prataña was on the prowl for copy. His newspaper, El Trapo Nacional was at a low ebb, not much news and all the improvised stories had led to legal action. Jóse was on the lookout for a good story and Alqueria usually obliged. However the Village was temporarily out of rioting and disorder due to a general lethargy and seemed almost peaceful, in its own quirky sort of way. Jóse sat forlornly at a table outside the Bar La Casa Devante wondering where his next story would come from. He had been to Alqueria before and developed a love of Remitroot Whisky which he drank in alarming quantities and with alarming speed. Loco Paco had a habit of engaging people at random in some inane conversation or other. Jóse Prataña was Paco’s target for that evening. Paco’s confused and fanciful utterings seemed quite credible to Jóse. After a bottle of Remitroot Whisky the Tory Party’s welfare plans would seem compassionate or perhaps that is going a bit too far. Paco was talking about Benjy his pet Saharan Dung Beetle which he had raised from a pup and Bert, his one and a half metre tall rodent which accompanied him everywhere. Bert of course was imaginary. Jóse somehow got the impression he was real. The locals sensing some good sport

backed Loco Paco’s story to the hilt. How he was a reclusive genetic scientist and had successfully created this one and a half metre tall rodent called ‘Bert’. To add a bit of colour they suggested that Paco was teaching Bert the rudiments of playing the saxophone. Jóse made numerous notes, drank more Remitroot Whisky and believed everything he was told. Loco Paco became famous. His fatuous grin adorned the front pages of all the national newspapers. He was hailed as a ‘genetic scientist of colossal proportions’. Some even tipped him for the Noble Prize. Most people who knew Loco Paco however would say that his greatest achievement was riding a bicycle, not well be adequately. Paco was booked to appear on a TV talk show. Other guests included the inventor of the intergalactic pulse motor with integral cheese board and Pedro Alverez the Abyssinian Goat Shirling champion of southern Spain. If the presenter, studio crew and viewers had all been heavily sedated with Remitroot Whisky things may have gone smoothly. However when Paco suggested that the presenter’s head may be on back-to-front the plug was pulled, the researcher fired and Paco send packing back to Alqueria.

DiaFestivo.’ She answered with ill-concealed joy. ‘Never mind, I’ll go to HuercalOvera.’ I answered, patiently parrying her thrust. ‘Huercal-Overa is also closed on Friday.’ She sat back, certain in her victory. She tossed her curls and smirked. She should have known – you do not smirk at a Biggs and get away with it. I leant forward over the counter. In a low voice and very calmly I said ‘They will do my blood test. I will go in early on Tuesday, and have it done before my appointment with the Consulta.’ With that parting blow I turned and departed the field of battle with dignity. Neither of us could claim victory, but I like to think that I gave as good as I got! Blood test not in Arboleas. Albox Centro Medico only on Tuesday, Huercal-Overadoctors approval.

I had Espere’d my Turno, and I stepped up to the Reception counter in the Medical Centre at Albox. With the confidence born of righteous knowledge I asked ‘Can I book a blood test for Friday?’ as I proffered my medical card. I left out the Please, as it is almost always redundant in Spanish. ‘Note from the doctor?’ snapped the receptionist. ‘I don’t need a note from the doctor. The blood test has been requested by the Oncology department at HuercalOvera.’ She regarded me icily. ‘You must have a note from your GP. Where is your GP?’ ‘In Arboleas.’ I thought I could second-guess where she was coming from, and her next sentence was going to be along the lines of ‘This is Albox. Go to Arboleas.’ I added hastily ‘Arboleas doesn’t do blood tests on Fridays. They told me to come here.’ She chewed on this for a second. I repeated ‘The test has been requested by Oncology, in HuercalOvera. They suggested that I have the test done locally on Friday to save time on Tuesday, when I see the Consulta’while simultaneously waving my Oncology paper in front of her. She re-grouped her forces and attacked her keyboard, which as far as I could see was innocent, and had done nothing to warrant such an onslaught. ‘Tuesday.’ She spat out with all the venom of a cobra with toothache. ‘No, it has to be Friday.’ Moses managed to part the Red Sea with a staff, so surely I could manage a

Steamed mussels

Method Scrub the mussels clean. Discard any mussels that don't close when tapped gently. Set up a steamer or put a rack into a wok or deep pan and fill it with 5cm/2in of water. Bring the water to the boil over a high heat. Place the mussels on a plate, then place the plate into the steamer or onto

the rack. Turn the heat to low so the water is barely simmering and cover the wok or pan tightly. Steam gently for five minutes or until the mussels begin to open. Meanwhile, combine all the sauce ingredients, except the oil, in a heatproof bowl. Heat a wok or large frying-pan over high heat.

Often regarded as poor man's shellfish, mussels are cheap and plentiful. In the wild, they grow on coastline rocks and stones and are farmed in suitable coastal waters. Mussels are one of the most environmentally sound types of fish or shellfish available. There's no hefty price tag and, what's more, these little creatures are in abundance. When hot, add the oil. Heat the oil until it's very hot and slightly smoking, then pour the hot oil over the sauce ingredients. Remove the mussels from the steamer. Discard

any mussels that haven't opened. Stir the sauce then pour over the mussels. Garnish with fresh coriander sprigs and serve at once.

Mussel Facts

• Provided they are in a moist, cool environment, mussels will live out of water for between 8–12 days depending on the season. They do this by gaping open and breathing. • The best way to store loose mussels is to cover them with ice, never soak mussels – always allow melted ice to drain away. Or buy them prepacked in our trays. • To test to see if a gaping mussel is alive, just tap gently on the shell. If alive it will start to close. • Don't store mussels in airtight containers or plastic bags without holes or they will suffocate. • Some mussels may float in water. These have simply lost liquid and have a little air trapped inside their shells, they are alive and safe to eat.

• Mussels are high in protein and hearthealthy omega-3 fatty acids. They are relatively low in calories and fat and have exceptional nutritional value. • Don't overcook mussels. Steam them until they open and pull away from the shell (usually about 4 minutes). If a mussel has not opened after this cooking time it is perfectly OK to eat, it just means that it was hanging on harder! • Mussels are filter feeders. They strain phytoplankton from the water. • Male mussels are pale white or cream in colour, females are orange. • Mussels attach themselves to rocks or ropes by way of a byssal thread or 'beard'. At Spring Bay we nip most of this off so they're clean and ready to cook. Learn more about our mussel de-bearding.

Health Benefits

Australian Blue Mussels are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, selenium, and iodine. Omega-3 are the 'good oils' that are

beneficial for the heart by helping lower cholesterol. Omega-3 also has antiinflammatory properties. Selenium is an anti-oxidant compound that fights free radicals in the blood stream. Iodine is essential for natural production of thyroid hormones that contribute to basic metabolism as well as helping your body to efficiently burn calories. As an added bonus Australian Blue Mussels are low in fat and saturated fats, and are a "good source" of protein and iron.

animal corner To advertise here call: 950 121 936 During the Tang dynasty (618–907), it was popular to raise carp in ornamental ponds and watergardens. A natural genetic mutation produced gold (actually yellowish orange) rather than silver colouration. People began to breed the gold variety instead of the silver variety, keeping them in ponds or other bodies of water. On special occasions at which guests were expected, they would be moved to a much smaller container for display. By the Song dynasty (960–1279), the domestication of goldfish was firmly established. In 1162, the empress of the Song Dynasty ordered the construction of a pond to collect the red and gold variety. By this time, people outside the imperial family were forbidden to keep goldfish of the gold (yellow) variety, yellow being the imperial colour. This is probably the reason why there are more orange goldfish than yellow goldfish, even though the latter are genetically easier to breed. The occurrence of other colours (apart from red and gold) was first recorded in 1276. During the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), goldfish also began to be raised indoors, which permitted selection for mutations that would not be able to survive in ponds. The first occurrence of fancy-tailed goldfish was recorded in the Ming Dynasty. In 1603, goldfish were introduced to Japan. In 1611, goldfish were introduced to Portugal and from there to other parts of Europe. During the 1620s, goldfish were highly regarded in southern Europe because of their metallic scales, and symbolised good luck and fortune. It became tradition for married men to give their wives a goldfish on their first anniversary, as a symbol for the prosperous years to come. This tradition quickly died, as goldfish became more available, losing their status. Goldfish were first introduced to North America around 1850 and quickly became popular in the US.

October 2016

Britain's native daffodils threatened by garden centre hybrids They are a symbol of spring and of the Great British love affair with gardening itself. But gardeners are being warned that their attachment to the daffodil could effectively spell its end - at least in its true form. The native British strain of daffodil, which inspired Wordsworth’s poem as well as references in Shakespeare, is becoming a rarity even in the wild because of crosspollination with ever more flamboyant strains of the flower bought from garden centres and nurseries, experts say. It follows warnings that even the drifts of daffodils Wordsworth would have seen in the Lake District are being bred out by cross-pollination with larger, hardier varieties planted nearby over generations.

Now English Heritage, guardian of some of the UK’s most important historic gardens, is taking action by ordering a mass autumn planting campaign including 25,000 bulbs of the native strains of daffodil and bluebells at some of its sites. The native “English” bluebell is also under threat because of the spread of larger but less fragrant Spanish variety. As well as planting the two flowers at its properties, the organisation is handing out bulbs to visitors to take home to plant in their own gardens to help promote the native varieties. It is not, however, calling for an end to planting of hybrid varieties of daffodil or other flowers. Indeed some of the 11 English Heritage properties taking part in the initiative are themselves effectively monuments to the history of horticultural experimentation, most notably Down House in Kent, better known as the home of Charles Darwin. John Watkins, head of gardens and landscapes

at English Heritage, said: “Native daffodils and bluebells, as well as the historic cultivated varieties, are a vital part of our horticultural and cultural heritage, inspiring gardeners and poets alike. “Our native species and historic cultivars are increasingly under threat from cross-pollination with non-native species and hybrids that flower at the same time. “The resulting offspring will be hybrids and likely to outperform and out-compete the native species. Historic gardens and landscapes are often the last refuge for ancient cultivars and native species. “Our major spring bulb planting campaign - across some of the most important historic gardens in England - will help arrest that national decline and ensure that the daffodil celebrated by Wordsworth over 200 years ago can still be enjoyed by visitors today and in the future.” telegraph.co.uk

Strictly Week 4 By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info 635 584 431

With the standards being very high this year, the competition is really starting to bite! Opening this week’s show were Greg Rutherford and Natalie with a Salsa. Greg pulled off some very difficult lifts but his salsa basic left a lot to be desired, stiff, twine toed and flat footed. Not his dance! I gave him 6 and the judges 28. Next were Laura Whitmore and Giovanni and Quickstep. For my liking too much hopping and skipping and not enough Quickstep. Her head was too far back and if not corrected will cause posture problems. I gave her 7 and the judges 33. Next were Anastacia and Brendan and a Rumba. Another performance with insufficient basic figures to truly portray the dance. A sexy performance but lacking for me. I gave a 7 and the judges 27. Claudia Fragapane and AJ were next to dance Foxtrot. The music was awful! But a nice smooth and driven foxtrot despite

HARMONY

the height differential. Claudia gives clean lines and has a good frame. I awarded her 8 and the judges 32. Ed Balls and Katya were next with a Paso Doble. Oh Dear! What a catastrophe from beginning to end littered with errors throughout. He tries hard bless him! I awarded 4 and the judges bottom with 16. Next were Naga Munchetty and Pasha with a Charleston. Sorry Naga wooden lacking foot swivel and characterisation for me. A 5 and the judges 24. Louise Redknapp and Kevin then performed a Foxtrot to another shocking piece of music. Her Foxtrot wasn't bad but needs more core lift to improve her top line. I gave her 7 and the judges 33. My favourite Danny Mac and Oti then wowed with a Quickstep. Yet another excellent performance, light airy and totally together Superb and another 10 with the judges a very mean 36! Daisy Lowe and Aljaz then performed a Rumba. For me they didn't connect as a couple despite a sultry performance from Daisy. Disappointing stilted hip action and unstable on solo turns. I gave 7 with the

judges 31. Judge Rinder and Oksana followed with a Viennese Waltz. Great rhythm and timing nice in ballroom hold but solo work needs attention. I awarded him 7 and the judges 27. Lesley Joseph and Anton then danced a Charleston. I actually found this a little boring. Lacking the story telling we are used to seeing. Lesley always characterises well but disappointing for me. I awarded her 7 and the judges 31. Closing this week’s show were Ore Oduba and Joanne with a Jive. This was an action packed performance of kicks and flicks done superbly. However basic Jive was flat footed and lacked energy - well camouflaged by Joanne! I gave 9 and the judges 39 and overmarked! The bottom two were Naga and Anastacia with Naga leaving the show after the unanimous dance off. I can't wait til next week’s show to see who will step up to the mark. Until then come and join one of our classes to keep up with our strictly gossip until then Keep Dancing!

Whether you are arty/crafty, good at baking or good at growing things or just fancy a great day out there will be something for everyone - just ask those who came last year!

seconds ahead of Ducati rider Andrea Dovizioso, with Suzuki’s Maverick Vinales third. Lorenzo follows Rossi in crashing out With Rossi, a seven-time premier class champion, quickly out of contention, Spain’s Lorenzo needed to finish fourth or better to keep his title defence alive. Lorenzo, who suffered a terrifying crash in practice on Saturday but returned to the track to qualify third on the grid, battled to keep within touch of Márquez. But he came under pressure from a hard-charging Dovizioso and his race ended in the gravel with five laps to go after a front end skid. The championship, now a victory procession for Márquez, heads to Phillip Island, Australia next week. http://en.as.com

in draws against Russia and Sunday’s opponents Slovakia, who held them to a damaging goalless stalemate. There is a predictability and pedestrian streak about England that Allardyce must find a way of curing - and any analysis of this must be couched in the context that this was his first game and a damaged team will not be rebuilt in a day. England’s lack of threat was emphasised by the fact it took 64 minutes to muster their first shot on target and that was more of an over-hit pass from captain Wayne Rooney than an effort on goal. THE CORGIS ARE BACK!

Yes folks I am happy to report the safe return of all 24 of the Mighty Vicko`s snow white corgis. Although we received regular dispatches from the various towns and villages they passed through it was nice to see them home. Down the road they raced, under the tunnel and then up to Camping Los Gallardos. I can tell you there was hardly a dry eye on the site as barking with joy they pelted toward the Mighty One as he stood there in his cloak of majesty. He greeted each of the 12 dogs and 12 bitches by name. “Ho there Taffy 1, Taffy 2, Taffy 3” he cried, right through to Taffy 12. Then he welcomed the bitches. “Ho there Blodwynn 1, Blodwynn 2, Blodwynn 3” Right through to Blodwynn 12. Like I said, there was hardly a dry eye on the site. Despite their long and arduous journey all the corgis were in surprisingly good shape, but the Mighty One has decided to give them

a well earned rest and is taking them to his retreat in Wales. It is situated on a hill up a slope on a mountain. I have been there but was sworn to secrecy so must never reveal its location. What I can reveal however is that the Miraflores Los G are fast becoming used to their new surroundings and have never looked so good. They are walking so fast now you could be forgiven for thinking they`ve had extra legs grafted on. I can assure you it is the result of hard training on top of more hard training. You mark my words, when the next tournament for the Calida Homes Walking Football takes place the Miraflores Los G will be a force to be reckoned with. We play and train the Los Gallardos football ground every Monday morning from 10.00 until 12.00. If you can walk, preferably unaided, and are over 55 you will be more than welcome. Next week. Football terminology explained. Bill White

golf instruction with Neil Evans

Welcome to my series of golf instruction articles. Over the coming months I will try to cover as many topics as I can to help you to improve your golf game.

The first three articles will cover the set up position. Most of the problems that I see with golfers at Desert Springs Academy can be traced back to faults in the set up. In this issue I will look the posture position. Firstly let me start by saying that the worst expression associated with golf is ‘keep your head down’ it is a dreadful phrase to say to someone playing golf and will create lots of problems in the swing, often leading to the very thing that it is expected to stop – topping the ball! One of the most important parts of the backswing is maintaining the angle of the spine. In other words the spinal angle should be the same at the top of the backswing as it is at set up, if the head is to low this will lead to ‘straightening up’ through the backswing resulting in the shot being topped or thinned. The correct posture position is created by tilting forward from the hips, not from the neck (pic 1 & pic 2) thus keeping a straight line from the base of the spine to the top of the head, the knees should then be slightly flexed and not bent. From this position the bodyweight should be on the centre of the feet and not back on the heels with the hands directly under the eyes (pic 3). Balance is the key to any golf swing, this position affords the best way of achieving that balance whilst giving much more room and freedom to be able to make a controlled shoulder turn at the top of the backswing.
