Palma drops the ‘de Mallorca’ in third name change in 8 years

Dropping the ‘de Mallorca’ the Balearic island’s capital is now to be known as Palma. IT’S time to rewrite the travel guides, tear down the road signs and reregister every property in Palma (or is that Palma de Mallorca). For the third time in eight years the Mallorcan city has changed its name. Dropping the ‘de Mallorca’ the Balearic island’s capital is now to be known as Palma after a vote in regional government. Made Palma in 2008 by the PSOE, the PP brought back Palma de Mallorca in 2012 before the latest name change. Claiming that the ‘de Mallorca’ tag is a ‘leftover’ from the Francoera, the PSOE have long campaigned for Palma to be called Palma. But it is unlikely to remain Palma for too long, with the PP

vowing to reattach the ‘de Mallorca’ if it regains power. expatica

'Worst weather in 25 years' as floods wreak havoc in Málaga'

THE Costa del Sol has suffered its worst floods in a quarter of a century, with buses and cars under water, residents on rooftops, one woman dead and a family with nine children rescued by swimmers. ‎A 26-year-old woman drowned after becoming trapped by flood waters in a brothel in Estepona (Málaga province) as emergency services in helicopters failed to save her. Cádiz, Huelva and Sevilla are on high alert, but the province of Málaga is the worst-hit in the last 24 hours, 200 litres of rain per square metre (20 centimetres, or ‎eight inches) has been recorded, and police, fire and ambulance workers have responded to over 700 emergencies since last Saturday. As well as Estepona and Málaga city, the disaster zone takes in Marbella, Alhaurín de la Torre, Álora, Benahavis, Cártama Casarabonela, Coín, Mijas, Ojén, Pizarra, Tolox, Fuengirola, Manilva, Casares, San Pedro de Alcántara, and Guaro‎. Flooded garages and ground floors of homes and trade premises have been behind most of the call-outs, but in Cártama and Mijas, dozens of residents have been rescued from the roofs - and even one couple from the bonnet of their

car.

Some 300 people have been evacuated in Mijas and a camp has been set up in the La Alberquilla sports centre, whilst in the El Romeral area o‎ f Alhaurín de la

APSA fashion is annual success The annual APSA fashion show took place recently at Maloans in Albox and raised €2,500 for the animal charity. The staff at Maloans were, once again, excellent hosts, providing a lit catwalk and stage for the models and cava for the audience. Marilyn Shipley's singing was enjoyed by all and MC Frank did a superb job running the auction - encouraging the audience to bid for the lovely outfits. The tombola and raffle were popular, with prizes donated by local businesses such as Amigos Bowling Alley, The Sleep Centre and Total Entertainment and a gorgeous Christmas cake from Keith Roberts was well received. Organiser Sue Buckley had worked hard to fit each model with a variety of outfits and there were plenty of other new and nearly-new clothes to buy during the evening. The audience was pleased to see a variety of clothes' styles and sizes at the show and

Rustic Pottery, Jewellery, Rustic Crafts, Candles. Pasties, Cupcakes, Jams & Chutneys, Plus many more... Also come and try our local homemade sausages Teas, coffee, with Mince Pie also soft drinks available

on the stalls. Andy, manager at Maloans, is a wonderful host and even auctioned the Christmas jumper he was wearing! Everyone had a great time and APSA would like to thank all those who came to the event, thank you to all the helpers and models (particularly Olga who stepped in at the last minute!) and to all who donated the clothes and prizes. The money raised will help the many dogs the charity looks after, the new kennels, neutering programme and vets' bills. Di, chair of APSA, was delighted with the amount raised and presented Sue with a gift to show her appreciation of the huge amount Sue and Tony Buckley have raised over the years for APSA. The next event, also at Maloans, is the Friday Night Fever Christmas Disco on 9th December.

MOJÁCAR

Mojacar Mojacar is a municipality located in the region of Almeria Levante, situated close to Garrucha and bathed by the Mediterranean Sea. The town is located near Sierra Cabrera and noteworthy for its narrow streets and the beautiful view of its surroundings. Among the main reasons why tourists choose to visit Mojacar are the sea, the climate, the nature that surrounds the city and its history. About Mojacar The area occupied by Mojacar was inhabited since ancient times; around 2000 BC it was a Greek settlement known as Murgis-Akra, a name that bears a striking resemblance to the present one and which would become known by the Romans as Moxacar. With the entry of the Muslims in the south of the peninsula they took control of the town called by the Arabs 'Muxacar' after the fall of the

Roman Empire; it was a period of great growth for the town until the inevitable confrontation with the Christian armies during the year 1435, which ended in an agreement of coexistence between Muslims, Jews and Christians, which led to growth and expansion of Mojacar until the early eighteenth century. Mojacar4 was suffering a great tendency to lose population since the mid-nineteenth century until in 1960 the tourism boom reversed the process. Tourism The best way to visit Mojacar is parking the car near the municipal soccer field and walk to appreciate the beauty of the Arabic and medieval architecture. From Plaza Nueva there are stunning views of the Valley of the Pyramids and of Old Mojacar, the first prehistoric settlement of Mojacar which was built along the river 'Agua' and is preserved as On Par le Franca is

MOJÁCAR CHOSEN FOR THE 2017 NATIONAL MEETING OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWNS IN SPAIN ASSOCIATION

Mojácar will act as host to the Association of the Most Beautiful Towns and Villages of Spain in 2017 and be the national and international showcase of the tourism sector. The Most Beautiful Towns and Villages of Spain brand is a seal of quality and, a benchmark of prestige in tourism and heritage conservation with great importance to the sector. The Mayor, Rosmari Cano and Emmanuel Agüero, Councillor for Tourism, recently represented Mojácar at the annual meeting of the Most Beautiful Towns and Villages of Spain, held in the municipality of Tejera in Gran Canarias. Almost all the towns that make up the Association attended, as it was an important event that dealt with many topics of great interest. Joint tourism strategies and their promotion, growth in social networks, as well as the incorporation of new municipalities were discussed. The working agenda for 2017 and 2018 was also highlighted, including the date

for the next meeting, at the national level, which is to be held in Mojácar in November next year. Among the joint strategies discussed, was the celebration of the "Noche Romántica" (Romantic Night), an event that will be coordinated on the same date between the municipalities of the Associations in Spain, Belgium and Italy. The Association of the Most Beautiful Towns and Villages of Spain is part of the International Federation of the Most Beautiful Towns and Villages of the World and therefore, many of the tourist strategies can be utilized jointly in different countries, obtaining a bigger media impact and a more powerful promotion of the brand.

can you think of many better places to spend a sunny afternoon than on the paseo maritimo mojacar

Also at the meeting, two new towns were incorporated as members of the brand, Capileira, in Granada and Grazalema, in Cordoba which like Mojácar are municipalities in the Association’s Southern Region.

MOJÁCAR OFFERS FREE SPANISH CLASSES TO FOREIGN RESIDENTS

merry christmas mojacar

Tel: 664 097 279 Paella, Tapas, Fish & Meat Dishes are our speciality

Mojácar Town Council has begun another year of free Spanish classes for foreign residents. Under the initiative of María Luisa Pérez, the Councillor for the town’s Non-Spanish Speakers, free classes are offered to teach Spanish to all the residents of Mojácar from other countries, with no conditions other than being of legal age and registered on the Mojácar Padrón. The hour long classes are given every Monday and Thursday evening in the Centro de Usos Múltiples. Two groups have been established, with the basic level scheduled from 17:30 h to 18:30 h followed by the intermediate / advanced level students from 18:30 h to 19:30 h. Afterwards, the classroom remains available for an additional hour so that all those Spanish and foreign residents in the Municipality who request it, can go to a conversation exchange session. An ideal method, both to practice what they have just learned and, to improve each other’s language skills. These classes proved to be a great success during the 2015-

2016 academic year and for this new course, the demand has exceeded the number of places available. However, since there is a waiting list, it is still possible to enrol. The students enrolled are mostly British, although there are also learners from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, France, Morocco and South Africa. Councillor María Luisa Pérez is very pleased with the students participation and the many positive comments that she gets not only for the initiative, but also for the good work of the teacher, Isabel Guevara. The post of the Councillor for the town’s Non-Spanish Speakers was created a little more than a year ago and is, increasing its scope of action, day by day. It is noteworthy that in Mojácar, out of a total of 6,838 inhabitants registered, 3,486 are foreigners and, many of them do not have an adequate level of Spanish to allow them to deal with everyday situations.

bRooklyn film review

“Two countries, two loves, one heart.” Brooklyn was based on the 2009 novel by Colm Toibin set around the early 1950s. The plot revolves around the idea of a young Irish girl, Eilis Lacey who leaves Enniscorthy in south-east Ireland for New York searching for a better life. She worked in a shop at weekends for a Miss Kelly, nicknamed Nettles Kelly, a woman who overcharged for stale bread and relished humiliating her customers and staff. Her sister Rose wrote to Father Flood (Jim Broadbent) in Brooklyn who arranges for Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) to have a better future. “She doesn’t want to be trapped in the humdrum cycle of existence that seems to be inevitable at home.” (Clark Douglas who awarded the film 4 out of 4 stars) She gets a job at a department store, Bartocci’s, but Eilis lacks confidence and her innate shyness make it difficult for her to interact with the customers. This leads to criticism by her supervisor Miss Fortini. Seasickness during the lengthy voyage turns into homesickness, alienation and loneliness as an immigrant in a foreign country once she arrives. She is warned it will be tough and yet in a short space of time, she is able to offer similar advice to another immigrant attempting the journey: “You’ll feel so homesick that you’ll want to die, and there’s nothing you can do about it apart from endure it. But you will, and it won’t kill you.” Words of hope. We are told she resembled Paddington Bear in the way she looked forlorn by

Geoffrey Macnab (The Independent). However, it doesn’t take long before she blossoms and exudes confidence. Father Flood enrols her in a book keeping course at Brooklyn College which she passes with honours determined to be an accountant like her sister Rose. At a dance she meets Tony Fiorello, an Italian plumber who lives with his family in a poor Brooklyn neighbourhood. He has aspirations to launch a suburban home-building business with his family on Long Island. He becomes besotted with our heroine and behaves like the perfect gentleman. Tim Robey (The Telegraph) refers to the tingling chemistry between them: “the kind of old-fashioned, shivers-down-the-spine serendipity that’s hushed and special, and can’t be taught.” The story is based on a love triangle between Eilis, Tony(Emony Cohen) and Jim Farrell. When Tony expresses his love for Eilis there is an awkward moment when she is unable to respond, although in time, she is able to tell him that she loves him too. A tragedy occurs forcing her to return to Ireland and she reappraises her life in New York comparing it to how her life could be in Ireland if she remained, aware of new developments at home that would satisfy her. This is where Jim fits in. “Two countries, two loves.” It’s a tough decision for her to make but she follows her heart and makes the right decision. “Brooklyn is a heartfelt portrait of America as a land of hope and dreams, and it makes our current resistance of that identity all the more heartbreaking to recognise.” (Clark Douglas)

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help that comes from over 38 years experience, contact me to make an appointment to come to my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk! On many occasions I have suggested tools and techniques to remove malware and block spyware. Most of you have followed the advice and not needed to call on your neighbour who “knows about computers” and risk further damage or bring it to me to be done properly and professionally. We now know that Windows 10 is crawling with methods that send your information, a lot of it personal, back to Microsoft. Now most of us would call that “Spyware”. From here you have 3 choices: The first is to accept that Microsoft knows what is best for us and would never do anything that was not in our own best interests! The second approach is to find and download a usually free program or script that will modify, disable or remove the offending ‘back doors’; and the final option is to the switches, that Microsoft include, to disable most of these unwelcome intrusions, either by yourself of by a qualified, trained and experienced professional. Option One. Trust Microsoft! It is your computer and your privacy that you are leaving wide open for them to examine at their leisure. My knowledge of Microsoft’s history (not bar room gossip but recorded documentation) makes me choose the side of caution. Option Two. Find, download and use a program or script that will

disable or delete these offending back doors. What do they promise? These types of tools have names like ‘Destroy Windows Spying (DWS)’, ‘O&O Shutup10’, ‘Spybot Anti-Beacon’ . They promise to quickly stop Windows 10 from “spying” in just a few clicks. To me there are a number of problems with this approach. Tools of this type can cause a variety of problems, and if you look around the web, you can see plenty of examples where things went ‘wrong’. These include: 1. Blocking Windows Update; Tampering with the hosts file to block specific Microsoft web servers; 2. Breaking the Windows Store, preventing you from installing apps; 3. Disabling the Windows Defender antivirus, which helps keep Windows 10 secure; 4. Deleting various services and breaking various things and potentially blocking you from installing major updates. Next week we will look at a much better way of stopping Windows ‘Phoning home’. I will give you a list of things to look for that will do just that. You will be able to follow the list through yourself or, if you would rather allow someone who already knows how to do it, contact me to do it for you. Remember! Christmas is almost here and if Santa is likely to be bringing you a computer, laptop or tablet, the best thing would be to get Santa to ask me (Trev @ Canducomputing) to set it up correctly so everything works perfectly on the big day. So until next week, stay warm, light your fires with the Euro Weekly News (but just take 1 copy from your local shop – there are a lot of shops!) and I look forward to hearing your thoughts in my emails (See Top of the Article).

The History of Christmas Trees

The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals (pagan and Christian) for thousands of years. Pagans used branches of it to decorate their homes during the winter solstice, as it made them think of the spring to come. The Romans used Fir Trees to decorate their temples at the festival of Saturnalia. Christians use it as a sign of everlasting life with God. Nobody is really sure when Fir trees were first used as Christmas trees. It probably began about 1000 years ago in Northern Europe. Many early Christmas Trees seem to have been hung upside down from the ceiling using chains (hung from chandeliers/lighting hooks). Other early Christmas Trees, across many parts of northern Europe, were cherry or hawthorn plants (or a branch of the plant) that were put into pots and brought inside so they would hopefully flower at Christmas time. If you couldn't afford a real plant, people made pyramids of woods and they were decorated to look like a tree with paper, apples and candles. Sometimes they were carried around from house to house, rather than being displayed in a home. It's possible that the wooden pyramid trees were meant to be like Paradise Trees. These were used in medieval German Mystery or Miracle Plays that were acted out in front of Churches on Christmas Eve. In early church calendars of saints, 24th December was Adam and Eve's day. The Paradise Tree represented the Garden of Eden. It was often paraded around the town before the play started, as a way of advertising the play. The plays told Bible stories to people who could not read. The first documented use of a tree at Christmas and New Year celebrations is argued between the cities of Tallinn in Estonia and Riga in Latvia! Both claim that they had the first trees; Tallinn in 1441 and Riga in 1510. Both trees were put up by the 'Brotherhood of Blackheads' which was an association of local unmarried merchants, ship owners, and foreigners in Livonia (what is now Estonia and Latvia). Little is known about either tree apart from that they were put in the town square, were dance around by the Brotherhood of Blackheads and were then set on fire. This is like the custom of the Yule Log. The word used for the 'tree' could also mean a mast or pole, tree might have been like a 'Paradise Tree' or a tree-shaped wooden candelabra rather than a 'real' tree. In the town square of Riga, the capital of Latvia, there is a plaque which is engraved with "The First New Year's Tree in Riga in 1510", in eight languages. You can find out more about the Riga Tree from this website: www.firstchristmastree.com In 1584, the historian Balthasar Russow wrote about a tradition, in Riga, of a decorated fir tree in the market square where the young men “went with a flock of maidens and women, first sang and danced there and then set the tree aflame”. There's a record of a small tree in Breman, Germany from 1570. It is described as a tree decorated with "apples, nuts, dates, pretzels and paper flowers". It was displayed in a 'guild-house' (the meeting place for a society of business men in the city). The first person to bring a Christmas Tree into a house, in the way we know it today, may have been the 16th century German preacher Martin Luther. A story is told that, one night before Christmas, he was walking through the forest and looked up to see the stars shining through the tree branches. It was so beautiful, that

he went home and told his children that it reminded him of J e s u s, w h o left the

At first, a figure of the Baby Jesus was put on the top of the tree. Over time it changed to an angel/fairy that told the shepherds about Jesus, or a star like the Wise Men saw. The first Christmas Trees came to Britain sometime in the 1830s. In Victorian times, the tree would have been decorated with candles to represent stars. In many parts of Europe, candles are still used to decorate Christmas trees. Tinsel and The Legend of the Christmas Spider Tinsel was also created in Germany, were it was originally made from thin strips of beaten silver. But when plastic/man made tinsel was invented, it became very popular as it was much cheaper than real silver and also lighter to go on the tree!

stars o f heaven to come to earth at Christmas. Some people say this is the same tree as the 'Riga' tree, but it isn't! The Riga tree originally took place a few decades earlier. Northern Germany and Latvia are neighbours. Another story says that St. Boniface of Crediton (a village in Devon, UK) left England and travelled to Germany to preach to the pagan German tribes and convert them to Christianity. He is said to have come across a group of pagans about to sacrifice a young boy while worshipping an oak tree. In anger, and to stop the sacrifice, St. Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree and, to his amazement, a young fir tree sprang up from the roots of the oak tree. St. Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith and his followers decorated the tree with candles so that St. Boniface could preach to the pagans at night. There is another legend, from Germany, about how the Christmas Tree came into being, it goes: Once on a cold Christmas Eve night, a forester and his family were in their cottage gathered round the fire to keep warm. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. When the forester opened the door, he found a poor little boy standing on the door step, lost and alone. The forester welcomed him into his house and the family fed and washed him and put him to bed in the youngest sons own bed (he had to share with his brother that night!). The next morning, Christmas Morning, the family were woken up by a choir of angels, and the poor little boy had turned into Jesus, the Christ Child. The Christ Child went into the front garden of the cottage and broke a branch off a Fir tree and gave it to the family as a present to say thank you for looking after him. So ever since them, people have remembered that night by bringing a Christmas Tree into their homes! In Germany, the first Christmas Trees were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and gold covered apples. Then glass makers made special small ornaments similar to some of the decorations used today. In 1605 an unknown German wrote: "At Christmas they set up fir trees in the parlours of Strasbourg and hang thereon roses cut out of many-colored paper, apples, wafers, gold foil, sweets, etc."

In parts of Germany, Poland, and Ukraine it's meant to be good luck to find a spider or a spider's web on your Christmas Tree. Spider's web Christmas Tree decorations are also popular in Ukraine. They're called 'pavuchky' (which means 'little spider') and the decorations are normally made of paper and silver wire. You might even put an artificial spider's web on your tree! Christmas Tree Lights Because of the danger of fire, in 1895 Ralph Morris, an American telephonist, invented the first electric Christmas lights, similar to the ones we use today. In 1885 a hospital in Chicago burned down because of candles on a Christmas Tree! And in 1908 insurance companies in the USA tried to get a law made that would ban candles from being used on Christmas Trees because of the many fires they had caused! So we have to say a big thank you to Ralph Morris for

making Christmas safer! The most lights lit at the same time on a Christmas tree is 194,672 and was done by Kiwanis Malmedy / Haute Fagnes Belgium in Malmedy, Belgium, on 10 December 2010! Many towns and villages have their own Christmas Trees. One of the most famous is the tree in Trafalgar Square in London, England, which is given to the UK by Norway every year as a 'thank you' present for the help the UK gave Norway in World War II. The White House in the USA has had a big tree on the front lawn since the 1920s. The record for the most Christmas trees chopped down in two minutes is 27 and belongs to Erin Lavoie from the USA. She set the record on 19th December 2008 on the set of Guinness World Records: Die GroBten Weltrekorde in Germany. Artificial Christmas Trees really started becoming popular in the early 20th century. In the Edwardian period Christmas Trees made from coloured ostrich feathers were popular at 'fashionable' parties. Around 1900 there was even a short fashion for white trees - so if you thought coloured trees are a new invention they're not! Over the years artificial trees have been made from feathers, papier mâché, metal, glass, and many different types of plastic (I've got a couple of inflatable trees!). The tallest artificial Christmas tree was 52m (170.6ft) high and was covered in green PVC leaves!. It was called the 'Peace Tree' and was designed by Grupo Sonae Distribuição Brasil and was displayed in Moinhos de Vento Park, Porto Alegre, Brazil from 1st December 2001 until 6th January 2002. In many countries, different trees are used as Christmas trees. In New Zealand a tree called the 'Pohutakawa' that has red flowers is sometimes used and in India, Banana or Mango trees are sometimes decorated. www.whychristmas.com

SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT US developer planning mega-resort outside Madrid

The Cordish Company says €2.2bn project will create 56,000 jobs and attract millions of visitors The Cordish Companies, a US real estate developer and entertainment operator, is planning to invest at least €2.2 billion on a Madrid resort. The complex will create more than 56,000 jobs for the regional economy, the company claimed in a presentation. The project includes hotels, restaurants, stores, theatres, cinemas, gaming areas and even a circus. A rendition of the resort planned by The Cordish Companies outside Madrid. LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR

If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com ALZHEIMER AND THE LAW Proactive planning is the key. Put things in place as quickly as possible. Question: My wife has just recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer decease. It is at an early stage, but I would like to know if there is anything we should be doing from a legal point of view while she is still of able mind. (The original question was much longer with a lot more detail and involving other matters also. With the client’s permission we have prepared this abbreviated version.) Answer: We would recommend that your wife issues you with a Spanish enduring power of attorney. (This is quick, easy and even though it could vary depending on the solicitor, it will not cost you more than 400euro). We have a booklet on the different types of powers of attorney you can sign in these circumstances. Simply request it by e-mail and we will post or e-mail it to you free of charge. Unlike in the UK this document can only be issued while your wife understands what she is doing. If it was required later on, a much more complicated procedure would be required using the local courts (this is an expensive and long procedure). The power of attorney is necessary because if it is not signed, the moment she is no longer of able mind you will not be able to handle her accounts, sell

your jointly-owned property etc. The one thing she cannot issue you with power of attorney for is for signing a new will, which is why we would recommend that you take a good look at her will to make sure that it is correct, as she will not be able to modify it in any way the moments she no longer understands what she is doing. Make sure that it complies with the New Directive 650/2012, that the beneficiaries are those she wishes, that you are comfortable with the named executor etc. etc. Remember when she is no longer of able mind the will cannot be changed under any circumstance. I would look at your own will also, as if you have left everything to your wife you may wish to change this in favor of perhaps one of your children. In the UK I would also recommend that you put things in motion to obtain a full enduring power of attorney. The forms can be downloaded from the internet and you can start things off by post. In the UK this can also be done after she is no longer of able mind, but there is no harm in doing it beforehand. We would strongly recommend a visit to your solicitor to discuss your situation in particular and to address at least the matters explained above. An honest and upfront meeting of the family with a solicitor at an early stage of the illness is a very good idea. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Smile, your in Alqueria

The air in the tunnel was dangerously low in oxygen, methane was building up at an alarming rate. At least the removal of excavated earth was progressing well. The final breakthrough was approaching. One last thrust with the improvised shovel, a small avalanche of dry earth and then sunlight, fresh air and freedom. This is how one group of tourists managed to get out of Alqueria with at least some cash still in their possession. The new tourist initiative by the Alquerian establishment was built on a firm foundation of fantastic fabrications and outright lies. On paper Alqueria appeared to be the French Riviera with free beer and dancing girls, in reality it was Scunthorpe on a wet Sunday. Holidaymakers were lured to the village republic with false promises and rigged climatic data. Once there the borders were closed, prices trebled and the unfortunate visitors relieved of their cash and all portable wealth. The system was simple, pick them up from a charter flight at Murcía airport. Drive them into Alqueria. Keep them there until their wallets and tempers had been exhausted. Then drive them back to the a i r p o r t where the expected r e t u r n flight never

materialises. The Spanish authorities didn’t mind Alquerians passing through their country as long as they didn’t touch anything on the way. Keeping the holiday makers occupied while their cash was being surgically removed was simple enough. Remitroot whisky rendered most of them incapable of logical thought while rigged gaming machines accounted for the rest. Manuela was the main attraction as tourist hostess, she was certainly worth a second look. She brought a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘package holiday’. As far as complaints were concerned Loco Paco was given the job of Customer Relations Representative. He refused to answer any query without first consulting his imaginary five foot tall pet rodent, Bert. Complainees went away confused, bewildered and in some cases sorry for Paco, but they went away which was the object of the exercise. Visitors soon began begging in the streets, some formed escape committees. Tunnels were started. One group was seen using a vaulting horse, but Rodriquez had already seen that film. A glider was found in an attic and one couple tried to cross the border disguised as a female alpaca. Unfortunately a male alpaca in quizzical mood was roaming on the other side. The couple are still receiving counselling. Those that made it out of Alqueria were forced to commit petty crime in order to pay their way home. The summer tourist season ended with bumper profits for Alqueria. Alqueria now headed the international blacklist for tourist destinations. Some countries were so outraged at the treatment of their nationals they threatened military action.

pause for thought

It’s particularly cruel how often thieves seem to strike at this time of year. And true to form I was saddened to learn that two of our friends had suffered a burglary this last week here in Spain, where thieves had broken through considerable security, causing major damage to property, to steal jewellery and other things for which the principal value was sentimental (so irreplaceable), rather than financial. And of course the real tragedy is that this episode represents but the tip of an iceberg; that many people are similarly suffering at the hands of the unscrupulous throughout this world, where there is so little respect for the possessions, feelings or even lives of others. And perhaps even worse is the fact that we are no longer shocked by such things, accepting crime of all description as a fact of life. But the Bible teaches us that this is the inevitable result of a rejection of God. That where the first two commandments (summarised by Jesus as “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength”) are habitually broken, then the remaining eight (now there’s a test – can we still remember them?) rapidly become disregarded in consequence. So bad language (do not take the name of God in vain) proliferates;

Sunday is no longer sacred, being treated like any other day; there is little respect for parents or anyone else in society; murder, adultery and theft are rife; truth, particularly in the political arena, is often in short supply; and we are all constantly being encouraged to covet just about everything belonging to others through the power of advertising! So how about a return to basics as we prepare for Christmas this year, determining to do a little better on those oft forgotten commandments to see if we can make some small difference to this World of ours. lane 6

We wanted to give our visitor, Nick, some typically Spanish entertainment, so obviously we took him bowling. The Bowling Alley is a victim of its own success; it was busy, particularly with a Spanish children’s birthday party, which took up 3 lanes, 2 rows of tables and most of the decibel count, but there was enough room for our meagre party of 3. Nick is quite good at bowling, whereas I am hopeless, so in order to give him some kind of a game I elected to cheat, and ask for the bumpers. We queued at the counter, causing a disruption in routine for the waiting staff, who were earning their restaurant wages at the gallop. ‘Can I have the bumpers?’ I injected a pleading note into the question, in order to mask my embarrassment. Next it was shoes. ‘Size 40’ I announced confidently; the proffered shoes resembled boats large enough to make a safe channel crossing in a heavy swell. My vast shoes and I waddled over to the bar in a manner reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin, to beg for a smaller pair. We got under way, and all was going smoothly – the balls were rolling, the pins were falling, and the bumpers were rising at the given moments with inconspicuous discretion – until they didn’t! None of us noticed the absence of my mechanical assistants. I chucked the ball with all my might, reckoning that with the bumpers I could sacrifice accuracy in favour of

By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com

force. About halfway down the lane the ball slithered inevitably into the gutter and stopped. It vacillated for a moment, then settled contentedly halfway between launch site and goal. ‘I’m not going.’ I affirmed, so Pete went and plucked the unfortunate girl away from her duties to retrieve the ball and correct the errant bumpers. However, only one bumper was willing to work, so after the poor girl had retrieved my ball from its stationary position in the gutter twice more she decided to move us to another lane. The first throw was fine, but then the bumpers came out in sympathy with their mates, and, as before, only one bumper would participate. This time we sent Nick to get the girl, who got a man who knew bumpers. But to no avail – we finished the game with one bumper – none of us were brave enough to disturb the poor girl a sixth time! Next time I’m going to ask for any lane except Lane 6!

Enchanting Spain - out now

From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. The landscape is diverse and dramatic, whether you are discovering the sundrenched beaches of Andalucía, hiking in the Picos de Europa or taking a trip down the Guadalquivir River. Enchanting Spain is a portrait in words and images of both the familiar and the unexpected pleasures of this vibrant country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------John MacDonald has written for many Spanish and international publications and has a special interest in Spanish history. He studied journalism, photography and archaeology at the University of Exeter and UCL. He shares his time between the UK and Spain. Patricia Díaz Pereda studied at the Complutense University of Madrid, and has worked as a television director and for a media publication. She is passionate about her homeland and has written many articles for magazines as well as contributing to Descubrir España, a National Geographic publication on the subject. She lives in Madrid. Albox

This municipality in the Almeria province is situated in the Almanzora Valley and only 65 kilometres away from the capital city of Almeria. Albox is characterised by its rich gastronomy, its culture and its traditions transmitted over the years since the Arab reign, Albox’s origin. History of Albox Albox was founded during the Arab reign in al-Andalus, in the early 13th century there was already evidence of its existence very linked to the splendour of the Granada Kingdom. Albox was a prosperous place until in the 15th century it was conquered by the Christians, disappearing into oblivion until in the year 1500 it suffered a great earthquake that destroyed most of the village, so they dismantled the existing castle to repair the damaged houses.

Walking Football

I`m pleased to say that a couple of new players joined us today. Apparently our fame is spreading far and wide. Well Mojacar and the surrounding area anyway. Still, giant oaks from acorns grow, and all that jazz. Things are so different now from when we first started to play almost 2 years ago. Back then the guys would turn up wearing all sorts of different outfits. From ballerina frocks to being so swathed in bandages they resembled Egyptian mummy`s. Doing a warm up would have been out of the question and as for a warm down! What? Waste valuable time stretching when you could be drinking. You must be joking. Over time they have learned that these exercises are there for a reason and everyone benefits. The way they move around the pitch is testament to their enthusiasm for the game. More importantly they can actually move the next day and it`s still good fun. This week Bad Boy Brian was the referee. Attired in a black tracksuit and wearing dark glasses it was like being in a scene from “The Sopranos” Oddly enough, no-one questioned his decisions. Well, you wouldn`t would you! The action was fast and furious and I got out of breath just watching. There were of course many attempts on both goals but nearly all were foiled by clever defence. In fact they were so evenly matched that the first goal did not come until the second half, a real zinger from Alan Two for the Greens. Hurrah!

Shortly before the final whistle Alan Mit Der Specs scored another for the Greens making them the victors. Hurrah! As one of them commented afterwards, “It`s the end of November, it`s Monday morning, I`ve had a great game of football and now I`m drinking coffee in the sunshine with some great mates. It doesn`t get better than that!”

FIRST FORUM WIN FOR JIM BARCLAY

Forum Golf Society played an individual stableford competition at Aguilon on December 2nd, and although the society seems to have the gift for playing on the best day of the week for weather on virtually every occasion, again out of a field of over 40 players only one person managed a subhandicap round, that person being Jim Barclay who, with a score of 37 points claimed his first Forum individual event victory. Graham Spalding’s 36 points gave him a very popular second place, with Douglas Dickson (34 points) third, Alec Grey (32 points) fourth & Yvonne Mackay (32 points) fifth. Mike Duckham also scored 32 points to take sixth place, which

was enough to clinch victory in Forum’s winter league with one fixture still to play. Dawn Colley showed the men how to hit a long ball to claim the day’s longest drive, with the four nearest the pin prizes going to Adrian Lawrence, Kevin Bircher, John Bridgen& Ron Wileman. Forum´s upcoming fixtures are 16th December Team Prize Scramble at Aguilon, 6th January Pairs Better-ball Stableford at Aguilon 20th January Stableford at Marina. On Thursday 1st December the 19th Hole Golf Society arrived at the Aguilon Golf Resort to play a Mickey Mouse Ball completion and an Individual Stableford. In the Individual Stableford David Wadey with 35 points took 1st place from Tommy Seed and Zeta Denyer both on 34 points only separated by a card countback. Steve Tucker took his first Nearest the Pin on the tricky 12th hole

hosts ‘paid price’ in El Clasico Barcelona boss Luis Enrique said they "paid the price" for missing chances in their dramatic draw with Real Madrid. Barca remain six points off leaders Real after Sergio Ramos' last-minute header made it 1-1 after Luis Suarez had opened the scoring. "In the second half, we were the better side, but we didn't manage to get the second goal and they ended up equalising," said Enrique. "That said, we deserved to win. It is not the best result for us." Barca were poor in the first half but looked set to close the gap on unbeaten Real to three points before Ramos headed home Modric's free-kick. "It was a very even first half and a second that we were better, we created chances. We continued looking for the second to avoid being levelled, but we were unable to do so," added Enrique. "In my opinion, the performance of the team was higher than that of the rival, but we have to improve, it is clear. "I say this even when we win, and even when we draw. We can improve in all aspects of the game. We are ambitious." Enrique was happy to see captain Andres Iniesta return from an injury that has kept him out for six weeks. He came on as a second-half substitute and set up a Lionel Messi chance, which the Argentine missed, with a brilliant through ball. "It is clear that Iniesta is a unique player and his input was perfect," added Enrique. "He entered at a key moment and, despite the difficulties of being out for so long, he gave us quality, vision and hard work.

Madrid captain calm despite lead over rivals Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has warned his team-mates not to get carried away despite the club's healthy lead at the top of La Liga. The defender scored in stoppage-time to snatch a 1-1 draw at Barcelona on Saturday to ensure the leaders stayed six points clear of their rivals. Real have not won the league title since 2012 under Jose Mourinho. "It's better to have it in our own hands than depend on others," said Spain international Ramos, 30. "We mustn't get carried away because there's still a long way to go in La Liga." Real have one more La Liga game at home to Deportivo La Coruna on 10 December before the European champions fly to Japan to compete at the 2016 Fifa Club World Cup. Barca finished one point ahead of Real to win the Spanish top-flight title last season. Saturday's result at the Nou Camp could be critical should the title race come down to head-to-head records. Real and Barcelona are scheduled to meet next in La Liga at the Bernabeu on 23 April 2017. Ramos, a World Cup winner in 2010, added: "The points difference is reward for the hard work we've been doing since the start of the season. "The hard work has reaped rewards and it's better to get one point than nothing at all. "We have to keep picking up points and maintaining the gap from Barcelona." Bbc.com
