Expatriates urged to report information about tobacco smugglers and tax dodgers
Call follows jailing of British fugitive extradited from Spain
Expatriates with information or suspicions about tobacco smuggling and tax fraud are being asked to call a Customs Hotline with any information that could lead to arrests or seizures. The call for help from the British community follows the jailing of convicted cigarette smuggler Malcolm McGowan, who has just been extradited from Spain and is now starting a four-year jail term. The freephone number to pass on information is 900 988 922. For people in the UK, it is 0800 595 000. People can also email customs.hotline@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk. There is no need to give personal details, and information that leads directly to an arrest could be considered for a small reward. McGowan, 61, originally from Edinburgh, was arrested at a swimming pool in Valencia on 10 August by the Guardia Civil. He fled the UK 12 years ago after being found guilty of smuggling 28.3 million cigarettes into the country. His crimes robbed the UK of around £4 million in duty and he was sentenced in his absence in December 2001. McGowan was part of a wider conspiracy to smuggle around 56 million cigarettes into the UK between November 1999 and March 2000. Ten other men were involved in the plot, which robbed the UK taxpayer of over £8.2 million. Adrian Farley, Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation for HM Revenue & Customs, said: “McGowan is finally facing UK justice after 12 years on the run. We are determined to pursue fugitives and ensure they face the consequences of their criminal activity. HMRC would like to thank the Spanish authorities and UK organisations that assisted with this operation.” The call to ring 900 988 922 comes as smugglers try to
make huge profits from illegal imports of cigarettes, and the selling of low-quality, counterfeit cigarettes, tobacco and alcohol. Customs officers are also keen for information about other items such as drugs, firearms, obscene material and endangered species. Tax frauds that HMRC want to hear about include betting and gaming, money laundering and the ‘carousel’ VAT scam in Europe. “Smugglers and fraudsters cheat the rest of us by not contributing the tax that pays for schools, hospitals and public services”, said an HMRC spokesman. “People in the British expatriate community can help us to find them.”

Difference in vehicle testing costs up to 200% depending upon region The cost of an ITV test on cheapest region to have Costa (Alicante) who had
a vehicle – Spain’s answer to an MOT – varies by up to 144 per cent depending upon which region of the country you live in, says a leading consumer group. This rises to up to 208 per cent for motorbikes and mopeds. FACUA-Consumers in Action’s recently-published price comparison shows that in the western-Spanish region of Extremadura, a motorbike ITV costs 25.93 euros, yet in the Valencia region the fee jumps to 63.23 euros. And prices in general have gone up by 2.6 per cent since last year. In a report by ThinkSpain, the sharpest increases in cost have been seen in Asturias, Mallorca and Cantabria, whilst the cheapest of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions to get an ITV are Extremadura and Navarra. But car and bike owners cannot simply drive to the
their ITV carried out, because the criteria for testing differs across federal borders and a test certificate is not valid on home turf if it was obtained in a region different to that of residence. This means drivers in Andalucía who go to neighbouring Extremadura for cheaper tests will find their ITV is not valid when they are back home in Andalucía. However, this does not apply to tourists, so an Extremadura resident visiting Andalucía for a week or two will not be fined for carrying an ITV sticker from another region. Drivers are not obliged to have their vehicles tested in the same province they live in, but they must take the test in their federal region of residence. Recent reports claim residents on the Orihuela

gone over the nearby southern border into Murcia for ITVs were being fined when asked by police to show their vehicle documents. But these same residents could travel to the provinces of Valencia or Castellón if they wished, since they would still be within the correct region – although as the prices are regional, they would be the same as in Orihuela. Different regions have different testing criteria – in some, including the Comunidad Valenciana, these include emissions, and in others, greater control and more stringent measures are in place for cars being imported from abroad. FACUA-Consumers in Action has called for ITV stations, which are State-owned, to increase their prices fairly and gradually and to ensure they test for defects which have a bearing on road safety. They have also appealed for re-testing where a vehicle fails to be free of charge if this is carried out within a reasonable period of time.

Three children left locked in hot Gibraltar Tug-of-war: Customs officer run over by motorcyclist trying to avoid the queues car as parents go to beach
A couple who left their three young children in a locked car in the heat in order to go to the beach have been arrested in Benalmádena, Málaga. According to press reports, the father, 48, and mother, 39 had left them with no ventilation or water at the hottest part of the day. A member of the public saw the children shut in the car in a car park near the beach and unable to escape, sweating profusely and feeling dizzy, all of which put them at serious risk of heatstroke. This was at around 14.45hrs on Wednesday last week, but the news has only just been released. Firefighters were called out and cut the children free from the vehicle, then traced the parents who were arrested. Police say the children did not want to go to the beach, insisting they went to another one where they could hire a pedalo, resulting in a family argument and the parents saying, “well, you can stay in the car, then.” The nationality of the family has not been revealed.
A Guardia Civil officer at the Gibraltar border was knocked over by a motorcyclist last Wednesday morning who was trying to dodge police and get past the inspections on commuters heading into and out of the Rock. The policeman suffered minor injuries, says the Spanish interior ministry, but these are being checked to make sure there is nothing more serious hidden under the surface. This is the second incident of its type in the customs inspection queue
Driver found with Gibraltar monkey in car on Madrid motorway Guardia Civil officers in Madrid have seized a Gibraltarian monkey which they found in a car heading for France. They saw a basket in the back of the car, and the driver tried to convince them it had a dog in it. But when police opened the basket, they found a Gibraltar monkey, which is an endangered species. The driver was unable to show any documentation for the animal, so it was taken by the Guardia Civil’s environmental wing, SEPRONA and is being housed in the Acuárium Zoo in Madrid until the alleged owner can prove it is his monkey. Given that it has already been identified as a Gibraltar monkey, it is likely it does not belong to the driver stopped on the R-15 and will be returned to the wild. These are the only species of monkey which live wild in Europe – otherwise they are mainly found in the Atlas mountains in southern Morocco.

at the Spain-Gibraltar border in less than a month. On August 6, a Gibraltar-registered car driver ignored the officer’s attempt to pull him over for inspection and continued on his way, knocking the policeman over in the process. The officer suffered injuries severe enough that he had to be off work for a few days. When police caught up with the car, it had been abandoned in the car park next to the border and several cartons of contraband cigarettes
were found inside. Guardia Civil officers say they are suffering stress and insults from people stuck for hours in the queue. But commuters crossing the border say they have undergone bullying behaviour from police and seen them deliberately destroy private property with no motives. Gibraltar authorities hand out bottles of water to workers, who are forced to wait for up to seven hours in direct sunlight.

Spain’s roads have claimed a total of 235 lives this summer alone – although this figure is 10 per cent less than in 2012, according to the ministry of traffic. A total of 113 drivers and passengers lost their lives in July. Most deaths occur on minor roads, with 175 killed here and another 60 on motorways. Motorbike accidents, however, have seen a rise in fatalities with 46 deaths on the roads in July and August, compared to 39 last year.
According to the ministry of traffic, 17 of the deceased were not wearing a seatbelt – including a 12-year-old child. But awareness campaigns about seatbelts appear to be working, they say, since the percentage of fatal victims travelling without one was 16 per cent this year compared to 26 per cent last year. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) cited the usual reasons for accidents causing deaths – distraction, tiredness, speeding, and drinkdriving.
Abortion Law Reform To Be Finalised In October
A reform to the existing abortion law is set to be launched in October, says minister for justice Alberto RuizGallardón. Although he does not give details of the final draft, the minister – and former mayor of Madrid – insists it will be in keeping with the PP’s original stance and ‘respects the rights of women’. Ruiz-Gallardón denied rumours that the party was divided over the contents, and stressed that the final law will have the unanimous approval of all members. So far, plans for changing the abortion law text have divided the nation, since it will be considerably more restrictive than the existing legislation drawn up by the socialists during their reign between 2004 and the end of 2011. Under the PSOE, a woman
in Spain could terminate a pregnancy on similar terms to those of women in many northern European countries – where the child would be born with a handicap or genetic illness that would shorten his or her life expectancy or impede quality of life for the child and parents; where the mother’s physical or mental health could be adversely affected, or for other, sound reasons relating to the impossibility of bringing the child up. These would be performed on the national health system provided a psychiatrist gave clearance, and mothers aged 16 and 17 did not have to obtain their parents’ consent. In many other northern European countries, including the UK, a patient of any age – including under 16 – can request their medical details

remain confidential and do not need their parents’ consent, nor are they obliged to inform them, before terminating a pregnancy. The PP wants to change the law so that all women under the age of 18 and therefore considered ‘minors’ must obtain their parents’ written permission first, and the only feasible grounds for an abortion are that the mother’s or baby’s life or health is at extreme risk. Deformities of the foetus, or any type of handicap or hereditary disorder, would not, the PP originally stated, be grounds for an abortion since this would be against the UN’s stance on equality for the disabled. But the final contents of the new law have not been made public. The text will be presented to the Council of Ministers in October for approval.

Dear Editor
I have never visited Gibraltar and I have no concerns about who owns it. However I cannot see it ever being handed back to Spanish rule. It has been British for three hundred years from a time when the world was a far different place. The Spanish are no doubt following the lead of the Argentinians who are currently making a lot of noise about The Falklands. Cristina Kirchner, the President of Argentina is without doubt arousing the passions of her people to cover up the problems of their ailing economy. Perhaps the Spanish Government thought that this would be an ideal diversion away from its own economic problems. If every Country looked back on history and tried to revert back to the status quo of three hundred years ago what a crazy mess the world would be in. Can you see the Italians, British, Russians and the like returning to the lands of their forefathers from the United States and leaving their homes to the former occupants, the native Indians? Can you see the Spanish leaving Argentina and returning their lands to its former owners and occupiers? What about Brazil? Would Portugal cope with a returning horde of people? Of course not, how ridiculous! Spain, get over it. Nothing will change. Gibraltarians want to be British. The wish of the occupants of a Country or portion of land must be the overriding factor in any such situation (details provided)
Dear Editor
Re: Gibraltar - A obvious ploy by the Prime Minister, Rajoy to divert attention away from himself with the ongoing corruption investigation and the internal problems that Spain has. The Spanish I have spoken to just shrug their shoulders and say what they want are jobs and food on the table. Gibraltar is in the interest of the Spanish Government but not the Spanish people, Spain has Ceuta and Melilla on Moroccan territory which Morocco would like back but Spain refuses to negotiate !! Also the financial package of 900,000 euros compensation just given to the fishermen who are suppose to be losing earnings over this dispute is way over the top and again meant to keep attention on Gibraltar. Franco closed the border with Gibraltar for many years but the Gibraltarians managed so let Gibraltar close the border this time to see how the Spanish Government react. Thank you.

Dear Sir/Madam, I feel your readers should be aware of a situation I found myself in recently. A well known insurance company (name omitted) phoned me and offered me a “ full English style” home insurance policy which I agreed to commence in Feb 2013. On Saturday morning of 10th Aug I had a call from a neighbour to say there was water coming down the street from my house. He couldn’t ring the bell as the electricity wasn’t working. I found that it had come from my utility room, when I checked I found that the 100 litre electric boiler had fallen off the wall smashing my washing machine and tumble dryer. I contacted the insurance company for an assesor to come, they eventually sent two men on Tuesday, who seemed to think that they could repair it - what they found shocked them. They took pictures and phoned the information to HO. I got a phone call on Friday (16th Aug) telling me that it was accidental damage and it was not covered in their policy. There is no mention in their policy about this, if I had been told I would never have had the policy after all that is why we insure our homes. So please could you inform you readers so that they can check their own policies. At the time of writing this I still have no hot water for showers, washing etc. Sincerely, Mrs A Hughes

The second annual concert at the Piedra Amarilla Amphitheatre was held on Saturday 7th September. Unfortunately though due to the weekend storms it was not held at the amphitheatre. Organisers Mick and Janet Seldon swiftly and seamlessly re-organised the concert to take place in the Piedra Amarilla Rural Centre so as not to disappoint nearly 100 music lovers. Undercover, a host of artists provided a fabulous evening of musical entertainment. These were led by the Voices of Almanzora under their Musical Director, Nick Duncan. Several of the choir performed as individuals, Ella Dring did a beautiful rendition of “The Londonderry Air”, Diane Kilner performed “Windy City” and Roger Dickman and Mel Howard-Coles performed a hair raising duet of the Freddie Mercury / Montserrat Cabellé duet “Barcelona”.The full choir also performed a Queen classic in the form of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and in addition to many other classic songs a lovely Abba compilation. Artist Marie O’Brian performed a selection of Country and Western songs, The Almeria Strings entertained with a selection of Blue Grass music, and the ever professional Brian Dee and Dave Sharp teamed up to become the Dee Sharp Duo and performed two selections of popular songs. For the second year running the compere for the evening was entertaining Scotsman Ted Townsend regaled once again, splendidly, in kilt complete with sporran, “Sign Dubh” (Scottish Kilt Knife) hose and brogues. Behind the scenes assistance was provided by none singing members of the Voices and other volunteers. F.A.C.E. (Fundraising in Arboleas, Caring for Everybody) were invited to the event and raised over 156 Euros by organising a raffle. The fist prize of a food hamper was won by Chris Parkinson. Other prizes were donated by Amigo’s Bowling Centre in Arboleas, Jack’s Bar in Albox and Frillies Ladies Underwear in the Los Llanos Market. For further information re the concert, the amphitheatre or the Piedra Amarilla Rural Centre please contact Janet Seldon telephone number 617 856 680. For further information re F.A.C.E. This month sees the launch of the UK shingles vaccination programme for the elderly. All adults aged 70 and those aged 79 will be offered a jab. This is great for anyone vulnerable to this painful condition which affects one in five adults. Shingles, or herpes zoster, is an infection of a nerve and the area of skin around it. Around 800,000 people will be eligible for the vaccine. Why is the vaccine only being offered to people aged 70 or 79? It’s a catch-up programme. Each year, all those who are 70 and all those who are 79 will be vaccinated. It is the quickest and most cost-effective way of getting the most at-risk people vaccinated. After nine years,

HOME SWEET HOME Indoors or Outdoors? Every rabbit owner should know that the safest place for a rabbit to live is indoors. Rabbits should never be kept outdoors! Rabbits may be easy to love, but they’re not quite as easy to care for. These lovable, social animals are wonderful companions for people who take the time to learn about their needs. Though providing care for these adorable creatures isn’t difficult, rabbits have a long lifespan—more than 10 years—and many specific care requirements. Anyone considering adding a rabbit to their family should carefully research books and web sites on rabbit care before making a decision. Here are some quick tips to get you started:
sight or sound of a nearby wild animal can cause rabbits so much stress that they can suffer a heart attack and literally die of fear. A BALANCED DIET Rabbits have complex digestive systems, so it’s very important that they receive a proper diet. Many health problems in rabbits are caused by foods that are incompatible with their digestive physiology. A basic rabbit diet should consist of the following foods: Hay: Rabbits need hay— specifically, Timothy grass hay. Rabbits should have access to a constant supply of this hay, which aids their digestive systems and provides the necessary fiber to help prevent health problems such as hair balls, diarrhea, and obesity. Alfalfa hay, on the other hand, should only be given to adult rabbits in very limited quantities, if at all, because it’s high in protein, calcium, and calories. Vegetables: In addition to hay, the basic diet of an adult rabbit should consist of leafy, dark green vegetables such as romaine and leaf lettuces, parsley, cilantro, collard greens, arugula, escarole, endive, dandelion greens, and others. Variety is important, so feed your rabbit three different vegetables at a time. When introducing new veggies to a rabbit’s diet, try just one

at a time and keep quantities limited. Fruits and Treats While hay and vegetables are the basis of a healthy diet, rabbits also enjoy treats. Cartoons and other fictional portrayals of rabbits would lead us to believe that carrots are the basis of a healthy rabbit diet. Many rabbits enjoy carrots, but they are a starchy vegetable and should only be given sparingly as a treat. Other treats your rabbit might enjoy are apples (without stems or seeds), blueberries, papaya, strawberries, pears, peaches, plums, or melon. Extra-sugary fruits like bananas, grapes, and raisins are good too, but should be given on a more limited basis. Foods to Avoid With such sensitive digestive systems, there are a number of foods that rabbits should avoid eating. These include iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage, corn, beans, peas, potatoes, beets, onions, rhubarb, bamboo, seeds, grains, and many others. Also, don’t feed your rabbit chocolate, candy, anything moldy, or most human foods. If you are not sure about a certain food, ask your rabbit’s veterinarian. Pellets If you choose to make pellets a part of your rabbit’s diet, it is best to use them as a supplement to the dark green, leafy vegetables, not as a substitute. These pellets should only be given in small quantities (1/8 -1/4 cup per five pounds of body weight per day, spread out over two daily feedings). Also, make sure to purchase Timothy-based pellets. Many brands of rabbit feed contain seeds, corn, and other foods that are too high in calories to be the basis for a healthy rabbit’s diet. Water Rabbits should always have an ample supply of fresh water available. Be sure to change your rabbit’s water at least once each day. Water can be kept in a sipper bottle or bowl. If you use a sipper bottle, watch new rabbits to make sure they know how to use the bottles, and clean bottles daily so the tubes don’t get clogged. If you use a bowl, make sure that the bowl is heavy enough to avoid tipping and spilling.

Speed camera ‘errors’ invalidate fines
A leading motoring organisation has slammed the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) for ‘illegal’ speed-camera margins which have led to thousands of drivers being fined when they should not have been. The Spanish Automobile Association (AEA) says the DGT was using an obsolete law to fine motorists, and has called for action to be taken. According to the AEA, a rule known as the UNE 26444 which was drawn up in 1992 and ceased to be effective in 2006 establishes margins for error relating to speeds which are much more restrictive than permitted by Spanish road traffic laws. Fixed speed cameras allow for a three-kilometreper-hour margin – meaning on a motorway with a limit of 120, drivers can be fined for travelling at more than 123 kilometres per hour – and mobile speed traps allow a seven-kilometreper-hour margin. In other words, if a driver is caught at 123 kilometres per hour, it may be considered he or she was travelling exactly at the speed limit given that a threekilometre margin for error is allowed, but if a camera catches the same driver apparently travelling at 124 kilometres, the minimum figure acceptable would in fact be 121 kilometres – even though, at this speed, the car speed-o-meter may register slightly less and leave the motorist being fined despite being within the permitted limit. But a Ministerial Order launched in December
2006, replacing UNE 26444, meant the calculations by static speed cameras were taken to be up four kilometres per hour out and mobile speed guns by seven, either above or below the figure recorded, which could mean thousands of drivers given the benefit of the doubt if their speed was only slightly over the limit or if they were indeed speeding, but were on the cusp of two fine levels. This was updated in 2010 and the margins lifted to five kilometres for fixed cameras with speeds of up to 100 kilometre per hour, and five per cent for static cameras and seven per cent for mobile guns with speeds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour. The maximum error percentage is used where the DGT cannot be certain of the exact figure. But the AEA says that since 2010, the DGT has still been applying the UNE 26444 criteria, meaning tens of thousands of motorists have been fined
unnecessarily, or those on the cusp suffered larger fines than they legally should have to pay and others faced criminal charges when these should have only been civil. Precedents in Europe exist whereby such fines have been reduced or scrapped, including one in Belgium which states that a breach of road traffic codes of conduct cannot be accredited where the means with which evidence was obtained are linked to an obsolete law. In Spain, for all other traffic offences including parking, jumping red lights or disobeying traffic signals whether in error or deliberately, the police are not obliged to provide proof and the officer’s word is considered sound evidence, with the onus being on the driver to prove he or she did not commit the offence. Officers are not obliged to stop the driver and inform them if they catch them in the act of committing a road traffic breach

Spain joins G20’s public condemnation of Syria chemical attacks
Spain has called for ‘sound explanation’ from Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad over the responsibility for the recent chemical bomb attacks in Damascus which killed 1,400 people, of whom 400 were children. Mariano Rajoy’s government is in full agreement with the USA that evidence ‘clearly points to the fact’ that the government of Syria was behind the ‘horrible’ attack in the suburbs of the capital, which they ‘totally condemn’. During the present G20 summit meeting in St Petersburg, Russia, the 11 countries including Spain collectively made a public statement to Al-Assad, calling for an ‘international’ explanation and saying that ‘breaking world laws’ by using chemical weapons ‘would not be tolerated’ and ‘could not be repeated’. Those who commit such ‘atrocities’ should be held accountable, said the statement, released by the Whitehouse. The 11 countries of the G20 say chemical warfare ‘dramatically reduces people’s safety’ and is totally unacceptable under any circumstances. They have called for the United Nations’ Safety Commission to give its verdict ‘as soon as possible’ on a possible attack on Syria. Spain is not likely to be affected by any decision to wage war on Syria, since the general consensus of the G20 has been not to send troops to the country – meaning no Spanish soldiers would be deployed there.
And minister of defence Pedro Morenés has denied claims that the USA had approached Spain and asked them to lend troops for a military mission. British PM David Cameron has accepted being outvoted over commencing hostilities towards Syria, and decided against it. US president Barack Obama has assured that a conflict with Syria would ‘not be another Iraq or Afghanistan’ and is thinking more along the lines of sending air forces to the Middle East, bombing the arsenal of chemical weapons, and withdrawing immediately. The G20, Spain included, has admitted that the Syria crisis cannot be solved by military means and are hoping for a political solution. They have condemned the ‘violations of basic human rights’ taking place in the Arab country en masse. Morenés said this statement by the G20 was not a declaration of war but a global message saying the use of chemical bombs was not acceptable - “not because the G20 has just said so, but because international laws say so,” the Spanish defence minister clarified. LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@ daviessolicitors.com
Q:
I understand that if I sell my property I needtothink about the following expenses: solicitors fee, capital gains tax and plusvalía tax. What is plusvalía tax , and how is it calculated? A . Up to recently this was a small tax when you sold or inherited , but now it can be a high amount and needs to be considered before the transaction. It is charged on the transfer of ownership of a property by sale, inheritance etc. . This tax is a local tax charged by each municipality on the increase in value of Urban land in its own district land and is distinct from Capital Gains Tax. It is important to realize that the tax is charged on land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land. The rates of tax are set by each municipality and can vary widely between neighbouring municipalities. The tax is based on the increase in the official, that is to say the “Catastral”, value of the land which a property occupies. This is the same value that is used to set your local property tax or “IBI” and can be found on the bill for your “IBI” issued by your local ayuntamiento each year and is shown as the “valor del suelo”.The actual price at which a property changes hands, or the value attributed to it if is the subject of a gift or inheritance is irrelevant. Calculation: The Plusvalia is calculated as a function of the catastral value of the land and the number of years of ownership (up to a maximum of 20 years). The higher the catastral value and the number of years of ownership, the higher the tax. Plusvalia tax = Catastral value of the land x Yearly percentage of value’s increase x Number of years of ownership x Tax rate The yearly percentage of value’s increase and the tax rate are fixed by the Town Halls. They are established locally. Up to now, when a Town Hall had updated the catastral values, usually with really high increases of the values compared to the existing ones, article 107.3 of the Law had established that on the following five years after the revision of the values, the Town Halls had to apply a deduction of 40 to 60 % to the catastral value. If a Town Hall made not contemplation of this rule teh law established an automatic deduction of 60%. However new Law passed in 2012 has changed that situation allowing the Town Halls to eliminate those deductions, which is why a loto of people are suddenly paying much
higher rates and find themselves with an unfairly high plusvalíaa tax when they sell. On a sale of a property it is the responsibility of the seller to pay the tax, but if the seller fails to pay this responsibility may be passed to the buyer, who would then have to recuperate the money form this seller. If the property is being inherited or is the subject of some other type of gift it is the beneficiary or recipient of the property who is liable to pay the tax. Certain transactions are exempt from the Plusvalia Tax, the main ones which are likely to affect the general public are the transfer of property between spouses who are divorcing, or to children to comply with Court judgments, and “aportaciones” or transfers to companies in which spouses are the only shareholders which may be used for tax planning. The amount of the tax that will be charged on a transaction will depend firstly on the Catastral value of the land which the property occupies, and secondly on the length of time since it last changed hands. If you are selling an individual house which stands on a large plot which you have owned for a considerable length of time the amount of the Plusvalia Tax could be many thousands of Euros. On the other hand, as the tax is charged on the value of land alone, the amount of Plusvalia Tax charged on a flat in a block which you have not owned for very long the tax may be quite modest. For those of you who are considering rearranging your financial affairs to take advantage of tax planning schemes, the amount of Plusvalia tax that may be due is one of a number of elements, which include the Notary and other fees that may be payable, which you need to consider when balancing the costs and benefits of these schemes. Depending on the amount of Plusvalia, it may be cheaper to make a gift of the property rather than enter into more complex arrangements with higher Notary and other fees. The time for paying the Plusvalia Tax is within 30 days of a sale or gift between living people, or 6 months of the date of death on an inheritance. Your town hall can advise you of the amount of Plusvalia that may be payable on a transaction involving your property, or in many cases it is possible to obtain the calculation “on line”, but as I always write in concluding these articles, if in doubt take professional advice.

FACUA Launches Tool to Calculate Excesses Paid Due to ‘Ground Clause’
FACUA-Consumers in Action has launched a simulator to calculate how much excess has been paid on a mortgage containing the now infamous ground clause, right from the signing of the deed up to the current date. According to a report by Kyero.com, with this initiative, the organisation explained in a statement, FACUA aims to advance the complaints of those affected, in order to demand the cancellation of this “abusive” clause and facilitate the return of their money. The tool is available on their web page www.facua. org/clausulasuelo. The user only needs to login and enter 12 pieces of information relating to their mortgage contract. Using this data, the simulator then calculates how much the bank has taken improperly through the application of this clause. FACUA is promoting the use of this tool via the social networking sites with the tag #micláusulasuelo, and explained: “A high percentage of variable rate home loans granted in recent years incorporate this clause, which prevents them, at their annual review, from benefiting from the fall in the Euribor rate”. FACUA-Consumers in Action is a non-governmental and non-profit organisation which has been dedicated to the defence of consumer rights since its foundation in 1981.
‘Online’ Mortgages 1,300 Euros Cheaper
The origination fee for opening a mortgage with one of the financial entities ‘online’ is 1.35% cheaper than doing so via the traditional high street banks. This percentage translates into a saving of up to 1,316 euros, based on an average mortgage of 97,495 euros, Bankimia reported in a press release this week. According to the study carried out by Bankimia, a company specialising in the comparison of financial products online, which analyses the maximum fees charged by major online and offline entities operating in Spain, to open a mortgage, offline banks charge an average of 1% commission for the initial study and 2.6% for opening the mortgage. These percentages are well above those offered by the
Spanish Authorities Request Information From Facebook On 715 Users
Spain’s government applied to Facebook for the details of 715 accounts in 479 separate requests in the first six months of this year, according to a report from Mark Zuckerberg’s empire. According to a report by ThinkSpain, Facebook has so far given them account information for 51 per cent of these people.
According to the social network, governments all over the world make written requests for information on users living in their countries to ‘help with official investigations’.But the average Facebook user need not worry about ‘Big Brother’ going through their holiday snaps – the company says ‘the majority’ of requests are linked to criminal cases such as theft, murder or kidnap. The total number of the network’s

online banking entities, where the initial study commission, for example, is almost nonexistent (0.06%), and the opening commission is more than one point lower, at 1.25%. Thus, Bankimia indicated that the costs of applying for and opening a mortgage in a traditional bank would be more than double than those of an online bank. Taking as an example the average value of a mortgage contracted during the month of June in Spain, (which was 97,495 euros, according to data from the National Statistics Institute), via a traditional bank 2,534.87 euros would be paid for opening the mortgage, while online the cost would be 1,218.68 euros, a difference of 1,316.19 euros. users’ details requested by Spain in the first half of 2013 is ‘much lower’ than in most other countries, Facebook assures.
The UK government has sent 1,975 information requests affecting 2,337 Facebook accounts during the same period of time, and France 1,547 applications relating to 1,598 users. Italy’s 1,705 written requests relating to 2,306 accounts and Germany’s 1,886 affecting 2,068 Facebook sites also far exceed the number of applications made by Spain between January 1 and June 30 this year. The USA government sends the largest number of requests for data – with between 11,000 and 12,000 filed this year affecting between 20,000 and 21,000 users, of which the Zuckerberg
empire has replied to 79 per cent. India is behind the second-highest number of applications – 3,245 relating to 4,144 users. Facebook’s legal department manager Colin Stretch says the data requested is normally basic information such as the name and length of time the user has had the account, but some ask for IP addresses and the full contents of the site in serious cases, such as abductions, paedophiles or terrorists. “The data we supply in response to these applications is merely a first – although major – report, but it is not necessarily the final report,” reveals Mr Stretch. “In our follow-up reports, we hope to be able to provide even more information in reply to requests from the public authorities.”

RBL Mojacar Branch resume Meetings With A Swing
On Thursday 5th September the Mojacar branch of the Royal British Legion In Spain resumed their twice a month meetings after the summer break. We were treated to a talk by an ex-marine bandsman, David Sharpe who thrilled the audience with his renditions of Acker Bilk and Glenn Miller , playing with equal aplomb the clarinet and the trombone . He gave an interesting summary of his career and roles in the Royal Marines with musical interludes to keep us entertained. The next meeting will be on the 19th September in the Artisan centre at the usual time of 11.30am and new members are always welcome and you do not need to have served in the armed forces to join. The next trip is a four night trip to Aracena near Seville starting on 22nd September This trip includes 4 nights in 4* hotel with half board and the services of a local guide to visit the lovely village of Linares de la Sierra and on another day a visit to the famous mining area of Rio Tinto . On the 4th day a trip to the fascinating city of Seville including a boat trip along the river Guadalquivir. Prices are €309 per person sharing a double room and €384 for singles. On 19th October we have our annual Poppy Appeal dinner and dance held at the Hotel Continental. If you are interested in any of these events please contact Jan Knight on 950473189 or gknight324@aol.com. More information is available on the website www.britishlegion.org. uk/branches/mojacar/ news-events
Paramount Murcia : All eyes on September Whilst it had been previously announced that work would commence at the Paramount Pictures Theme Park site in Alhama de Murcia, subsequent news has pushed this date back to “October or November”. According to a report by Tumbit, however, two important and self-imposed deadlines floated by the Regional Government of Murcia in recent weeks, with regards to the project, “should” still take place at some point this month. On the 23rd of June, Jesus Samper, President and CEO of Proyectos Emblemáticos Murcianos SA (Premursa) - the
Constructor and Promoter of the park - announced that a total of 11 companies had “Expressed their Interest” in tendering for work at Paramount, ant that “Contracts will be awarded in September.” Meanwhile, on the 1st of August Regional Minister for Culture and Tourism, Pedro Alberto Cruz advised a press conference how the final details of the Paramount Theme Park project would be unveiled to the public “in September”. Anybody still holding their breath ?
Corvera Airport : Murcia ‘may’ sue Aeromur
The Spokesman for the Regional Government of Murcia commented yesterday how the negotiations with AENA and the Ministry of Defence regarding the closure of San Javier Airport were “virtually complete”. In a report by La Verdad, according to the Minister, all parties are cooperating with the transfer of (Civilian) flights to Corvera Airport and there is “no obstacle” in the process of bringing the new airport
into operation. Ballesta was speaking yesterday in the weekly meeting of the Government, where Minister for Public Works, Antonia Sevilla, tabled the proposal to terminate the contract for Aeromur’s licence to operate Corvera Airport due to their inability to meet agreed deadlines. Whilst any definitive decision was postponed until next Friday, Ballesta confirmed Sevilla’s earlier comments that
Spanish Universities urge “adopt a student”
Faced with escalating tuition fees and stricter requirements to access grants, some public universities are coming up with creative ways of fundraising. One idea under consideration is an “adopta-student” scheme that would seek donations from companies and individuals to sponsor a college education for struggling
learners. Málaga University’s president, Adelaida de la Calle, said her institution will propose creating a fund for this type of donation, noting that enrollment has gone down. “Just as you can sponsor a child, people could sponsor a student by paying their fees.” An analysis by EL PAÍS shows that at least 30,000
Corvera is still on schedule to award final contracts by the end of 2013, with a view to becoming operational Summer 2014. The Minister also confirmed that the Regional Government was looking into the legalities in claiming compensation of up to 7 Million Euros from Aeromur for “The inconvenience caused to the people of Murcia” in the delays to date.
Report: www.tumbit.com
university students in arrears (2.3 percent of the total) are on the verge of being kicked out of campus. While university leaders are trying to offer formulas like payment in installments, they are increasingly turning to private initiatives for support. José Carrillo, president of Madrid’s Complutense, called the sponsorship idea “a positive initiative” but there is some fear in university circles
procosona
about shifting the burden of funding to the private sector. Xavier Grau, president of Universidad Rovira i Virgili in Tarragona, says “donations are positive in some cases and situations, but the ordinary functioning of the university cannot depend on them. It’s a very subtle line that we should not cross.”

DELIA’S BACK!
Dish of the day at Waitrose yesterday was humble pie – and first in the queue to see it served up must surely have been Delia Smith. Months after the Queen of TV cookery was dumped in favour of Pippa Middleton, the supermarket has decided to reinstate her. In a U-turn, the grocery giant has asked the much-loved cook to bring her successful online culinary school to its website. The move follows anger in the kitchens of Middle Britain over Waitrose’s decision to drop her from its television ad campaign last year, while promoting Miss Middleton. Customers saw the decision as a betrayal of a woman who had taught two generations to cook and the resulting Twitter storm suggested it was a ‘gratuitous insult’ to customers, with some threatening a supermarket boycott. Her departure was followed by the news that Waitrose had hired the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister as the new star columnist for its magazine. The news irked many Delia lovers, not least because the 29-year-old’s culinary experience seemed limited to enjoying the hospitality at celebrity parties and making sushi rolls for her university chums. Added to that was the widespread mocking of her Celebrate party planning book, which had disastrous sales. Last weekend, the Mail Online reports, breathless bosses at Waitrose announced their ‘exciting new move’ to work with Delia again. Her online cookery school, launched earlier this year, will appear on the Waitrose TV section of the supermarket’s website, offering a free video library of lessons and techniques from beginner to advanced level. Waitrose chiefs were positively effervescent, calling Delia’s tutorials the ‘hero of the channel’ and praising her ‘inspiration and expertise’. Waitrose marketing director Rupert Thomas said: ‘We have a long and successful history of working with Delia and we’re thrilled to be joining forces again on the Delia Online Cookery School with Waitrose, which we believe will be the definitive online tool for cookery tuition.’ Delia, who has sold 21million cookery books, maintained her dignity throughout the controversy. When it was suggested she might want to prepare one of Pippa’s recipes at home, she simply laughed. Yesterday, the 72-year-old spoke of her ‘ambition’ to teach anyone who wants to learn to cook. ‘If you are from nine to 109 you will be able to learn anything from boiling an egg to baking a cake – I don’t think you can learn in a better way,’ she said.

method
Mix together the onions, raisins, minced beef, tomato purée and curry powder in a bowl. Using your hands, knead to combine the mixture evenly. Form into 24 meatballs. Heat 1tbsp of the oil in a saucepan, then add the meatballs, in small batches, and cook until they are browned all over. Tip out the excess fat and put the meatballs back in the pan. Add the cinnamon, tomatoes and lemon juice, cover and simmer gently for 25 minutes or until the meatballs are cooked. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan, add the celery and courgettes and cook until softened and starting to brown. Then add the peas and cook for a further 5 minutes or until they are tender. Stir the courgette mixture into the meatball mixture just before serving.

What is a tagine?
Tagine is the Moroccan word that refers to both the unique glazed earthenware vessel with a distinctive conical lid and also the food prepared in it. Traditionally used by nomads as portable ovens over charcoal braziers for making stews, usually containing meat, the tagine is used for both cooking and serving, but care should be taken to protect your table when using the tagine as a serving dish as the base will be very hot. Cooking principles: The conical shaped lid helps preserves moisture in the food as the steam condenses on the inside of the lid. The shape of the lid also creates circulation within the dish, infusing the food with spices and flavours. The low indirect heat produces a rich, aromatic flavour as the food slowly simmers for hours and the resulting meat becomes meltingly tender. Most tagines involve slow simmering of less-expensive meats. Very few Moroccan tagine recipes require initial browning, making them ideal to cook in the oven. Types of tagine: Tagines come in two types those that can be used for serving only and those used for cooking. Serving tagines: These Moroccan tagines are often highly coloured and patterned, but are not suitable for cooking and are not dishwasher safe. Cooking Tagines Traditional Moroccan tagines: These are made in Morocco of glazed terracotta and ideally require seasoning before use. They can be used in the oven and over a low gas flame preferably with a heat diffuser. These are not dishwasher safe, please wash by hand in warm soapy water. Other cooking tagines: We have a selection of ceramic tagines on the site in variety of colours and patterns. These are fully glazed and do not require seasoning before first use. They can be used in the oven but not on the hob, and are dishwasher safe. Seasoning your tagine for first use This is not essential but will remove any earthenware ‘taste’ and strengthen your tagine. The new tagine needs to be submerged in water for at least 1 hour. Rub the inside of the base and lid with olive oil; put in a cold oven and set temperature to 150C (gas mark 2) and leave for 2 hours. Remove from oven and leave to cool. When completely cool, wash in warm soapy water and dry with a clean cloth. Your tagine is now ready to use.

Royal British Legion - help !!!
Albox Branch of The Royal British Legion Standard stolen The official Standard of The Royal British Legion Albox Branch was stolen from a car parked in the car park near La Parrilla Hotel & Restaurant around 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. on Thursday 5th September 2013. The Standard was in its black leather carrying case at the time and it is believed it was mistaken for a rifle (see attached photographs. The Standard bears the words ‘ALBOX BRANCH’ instead of those shown) Despite a quick and thorough search of the area by La Guardia Civil and members of the Branch it has not yet been recovered. The Standard defines the Branch and sentimentally is irreplaceable. If anyone spots either the case or the Standard please urgently contact La Guardia on 112 on your mobile or the Branch Chairman Peter Phillips on 693 483 392 or peatpee@ sky.com or any member of the Branch committee. Thank you for your help.

SOLTIMES SEPTEMBER 2013
My Better Idea
I was confident that I knew the way to our destination. I had been there before, admittedly some time ago, but my mental map of the upand-down intricacies of Zurgena was still fresh, added to which a life-long residency in Devon, which in parts is less than straightforward, has given me a pretty good instinct for finding places. I brushed aside Pete’s advice to ring up and ask for directions with the fateful words ‘I know the way, I remember it from last time.’ We sailed confidently into the unsuspecting village, turned left on the single track road up the hill and parked outside our destination. ‘Told you I knew the way.’ I smugly pointed out. Business concluded, it was time to head home. ‘Better back down’ Pete advised. ‘You’ll never turn round here.’ He was so obviously right that the advice was unnecessary, but I had a better idea that didn’t involve backing at all. ‘No, I’ll go on. There’s a plaza at the top, and I can just drive round it and come back down again. That is

what I did last time.’ With a perfectly executed hill start I drove on, passing a huddle of elders, a child and two dogs. They waved in a friendly manner, except the child, who was too small, and the dogs, who didn’t care. About 6 yards further on I came abruptly and unexpectedly to a dead end. I looked in the rear view mirror to see that my audience had spread out across the road, to get a better view of what passes in Zurgena for entertainment. I reversed gingerly through the throng, who were by now cheerfully entering into the spirit of the thing. I took the advice of the matriarch of the group and retracted my mirror (she tapped it with her walking stick) and directed by an eloquently waved broom I followed a sprightly male elder down a tiny steep alleyway that I hadn’t even noticed. At the end he stopped and called to his friend, who abandoned his vegetable patch in order to direct me with his hoe down another tiny cobbled alleyway. Preceded by one of the dogs, and watched by native inhabitants of all ages, who appeared at windows and doorways as I passed I steered Del through squeezes through which only a Renault Clio with retracted wing mirrors or a donkey would have fitted. Then suddenly we were back to civilization. Pete was right – I should have backed down!
When a Vampire’s Armpit is the Lesser Evil It’s funny how certain attitudes change as soon as you move permanently to Spain. What may once have been a holiday destination - with its night life, numerous restaurants and the glorious sunshine – now takes on a wholly new aspect. In short, we become blasé. This is natural of course, and it’s good. Whilst we had to save our hard earned cash for the annual or biannual vacations, with the intention of blowing it on food, booze and entertainment, it’s obvious that the situation has to radically change when the holiday destination becomes the permanent home. Not only would the cost be prohibitive – unless you have the salary of a newspaper editor – but the novelty would soon diminish and disappear. Speaking for ourselves, it is true that we can now afford to eat out far more than we could back in the Mother country, but it’s nice nevertheless, to have an evening out in a good restaurant with friends and still

regard it as a treat. Two friends from England were staying with us recently, and we decided that it would be in order to show them the great metrolops of Torrevieja after dark. This is something we only like doing ourselves once or twice during the summer months because we normally choose to avoid the babble and tourist din like the plague. But it’s good on the odd occasion to experience the night time atmosphere and vibrancy of the town during July or August and an absolute obligation if we have friends staying. And so, as duty demanded, we made our way into a packed and noisy town. After a meander around the bustling evening market, we strolled around town pointing out the various sites of interest introducing our friends to churros con chocolate en route, and we eventually found ourselves in a waterfront cocktail bar. ‘Found ourselves’ is a bit of a misnomer because our arrival at the bar was deliberate, calculating and entirely through choice and anyway, it was the perfect base from which to people watch. The list of cocktails was mind blowing. Not so much because of the sheer number of concoctions on offer, but the outrageous names that many of them had - most of which would be instantly censored if I were unwise enough to include them here - and achieving the near impossible, by making me blush. We bought beers for the first round, simply to slake our thirst and rinse away the dust of the day - apart from the elfinlike Mrs. Bird who was our driver for the night and who wisely decided upon an
agua con gas with ice and lemon and a little paper brolly to tart it up a bit. And which, in view of the other exotica on the menu, should have been sold as Bridge Over Bubbled Waters or H2Ohh! They could have charged three times as much. I was still enjoying my lager when our two friends called the waitress over to order their first proper cocktails – an attractive girl with pieces of shrapnel in her nose and bottom lip, and legs up to Benidorm. I signaled that I was not ready to order and off she dashed to get the drinks, her rear end reminding me of a sack of hyper active ferrets. She was soon back at high speed - the energy of the ferrets undiminished – and I remember thinking that she must be on piecework. “Ready to order sir?” she purred. “Um, well . . .” “Sex On The Beach is cool.” She interrupted. Well now. I thought about this. But on balance I decided that a nice cocktail was what I really needed - after all, my lovely wife was in attendance and anyway, the sand gets everywhere. “Don’t take this personally” I told the waitress, “but how about ‘Up Yours Sideways’” which was a blend of tropical fruits, a poncy liqueur, some spicy things that I had never heard of and my favourite tipple – dark rum. I don’t think the others

viewpoint

Alquerian society is seen as godless, debauched and anarchic by the more sanctimonious observer. While most would agree it sounds like terrific fun the Monks of the order of St Jude the Daft, decided to save our wayward Pueblo. The people of Alqueria, seizing their chance sold the Monks, who were blinded by religious fervour two overpriced dilapidated houses on the Calle Mirador. The Monks set to with a will and soon the Monastery of St. Jude the Daft (Alqueria) opened its doors for business. The Monks waited, and waited, and waited. The only taker was Loco Paco who mistook the Monks for a rare antipodean marsupial and tried to lasso the Abbot. The people of Alqueria gave the monastery a wide berth. Monks in penance covered themselves, their clothes and anything in reach with a mixture of cow dung, goat’s droppings and pomegranate flesh. Accompanied with a shrill wail punctuated by nasal grunts it gave rise to a totally nauseating spectacle. Their foul smelling clothes were undoubtedly responsible for some dirty habits. As for the spiritual salvation of the populace little headway was made. The Abbot summoned Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido, the Village Priest on a consultative basis. Now these Monks in fact very few monks anywhere have had dealings with an existentialist priest. The monastic fraternity has been well shielded from this kind of thinking. The more the priest hammered home the meaninglessness of the universe and the contingency of all life the more the Monks became electrified. The credo of living for today and the understanding that tomorrow is just an unreachable hypothetical point in free space hit home. The Abbot tried to quell this philosophical uprising, but the choice between ritual bathing in manure and of abstinence came a poor second to the Priest’s hedonistic view of life. The Abbot was a trier however and had faith, misplaced perhaps in his flock, he suggested a trial. It was to be the old struggle between perceived good and perceived evil. Which is which depended on your viewpoint. The Abbot armed the Monks with their faith but the Priest introduced them to Manuela. Consequently the Monks were led into a trial of temptation, they all failed miserably. Red-eyed and dissipated the Monks began reinventing their order. The Abbot fled to Britain where he now councils prime ministers who have been rejected by their Parliament. The Monks’ habits are now sequined and thigh length. The Monastery renamed ‘St. Jude the Daft a Go Go’.
had actually seen that particular brew on the extensive list because having heard what sounded like an affront to our waitress, Steve spluttered his Screw My Brains Out down his Hawaiian shirt and Sally choked on her comparatively respectable Vampire’s Armpit. My much better other half merely sat there multitasking - drumming the table with her fingers, sipping her water and firing
cruise missiles at me with her eyes. But our trendy young waitress was unmoved and turning on her heel thus displaying the menagerie once again, she hurried away. Why do young girls today look as if they have been caught in a grenade blast, and why can’t they call cocktails Singapore Sling and Screwdriver like they used to I mused. Damn it, I’m getting old.

Still Space to be amazed
So there I am, balancing on one leg, the radio in one hand, trying desperately to get any sort of signal. What’s more frustrating is that I’m not trying to find a station in Auckland-which is on the outskirts of New Zealand if my geography is right. No, I’m trying to listen to our local radio station, Smooth FM, which is broadcasting from only ten minutes away from our house. After finally locating a signal and welding the tuner to the frequency, reception is still about as weak as Neil Armstrong’s signal from the Moonwhich is a little further than ten minutes from our house! But you see this is what I love about the radio, it is so unpredictable, you never know what you may hear. Those of you who spent hours listening to Radio Luxembourg will remember how, annoyingly, the signal used to slowly disappear every so often, usually during the record you had been waiting for hours to hear, but never, unfortunately, when they sneaked in “Puff the Magic Dragon” ! Actually, radio reception has caused me some embarrassing moments. Many years ago-well, not really THAT many-I heard a track off Elton John’s new album which I really liked. It convinced me that I should go to the record shop and buy the album. Off I went to my record shop of choice, NEMS, and strode confidently up to the counter and asked for the Elton John album with the song “Penny and the Gents” on it. As much as they told me that no such song existed, I told them that, as Radio Luxembourg played it, then I must be right. Anyway, I left the shop empty handed and it was only a few months later that I found out the song was actually called “Bennie and the Jets”. I never went to NEMS again and still blush when Elton sings that song! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo. co.uk
Sorry, you’ll have to excuse me, the signal is fading again and they’re playing that song by Coldplay, “Pair of Tights”. I’ve got to find somewhere that will allow me to hear the song properly. Oh, hang on, the signals come back and, guess what, I’ve done it again. “Pair of Tights” is actually called “Paradise”. Oh well, one consolation is that at least NEMS has closed down so there is no prospect of me making a fool of myself in there again!
Isn’t it cute - the Olinguito With the world seemingly shrinking as communication and travel becomes easier and faster it’s refreshing to know we can still be amazed by this beautiful blue planet we inhabit. Only last week scientists announced the discovery of a canyon in Greenland that’s 750km long and up to 800m deep making it almost twice as long as the Grand Canyon. It was discovered by bouncing radio waves from planes flying overhead to map the rock underneath the ice. The canyon is buried by the Greenland ice sheet which in places is 3kms
thick; the pressure from this huge mass of ice above it has squashed central Greenland to 200m below sea level whereas before it was 500m above sea level. Loving facts and figures I took out a calculator and a Bic biro to conduct further research. Assuming roughly that the blunt end of a biro is 1cm square and that the biro was buried vertically at the bottom of the canyon it would have the equivalent of 276 kilo bags of sugar precariously balanced on top of it. Knowing that it would take 10,000 biros pointing straight
down to fill a square metre and that the canyon is 6km wide and 750km long that’s a hell of a lot of sugar to buy at the supermarket for the purposes of my virtual experiment. No wonder the Greenland’s crust has been pushed down 700m. The UK is affected by this ‘springboard’ effect too, after the last glaciers left 20,000 year ago Scotland has been slowly bouncing back with some parts predicted to elevate another 10cms over the next 100 years. This will help counteract any sea level rises from global warming. This is not so good for England and Wales as they are at the other end of this geological See Saw and they will possibly drop 5cm in the same time period. This means any average sea level rises will be felt much more down south. Nepal in the Himalayas has over 1300 peaks with the two most famous being Everest and Annapurna. About a 1000 have never been climbed by Westerners at least, possibly the odd yeti has had a pop. Amazingly lots of these mountains don’t have names and the Nepalese government has decided to honour Hilary and Tensing who were the first to scale Everest in May 1953 by naming a mountain after each of them. Two French climbers
who first climbed Annapurna, Herzog and Lachenal are also being honoured in the same way. In a bid to promote tourism an extra 165 mountains measuring up to 7999m will be opened up to climbers from next Spring. In the mountainous forests that cover Ecuador and Colombia a new species of mammal has been discovered. The Olinguito has a teddy bear like face, is the same size as a small cat and the smallest relative in the racoon family. It eats fruit and only comes out at night. Amazingly a female was captured in 1967 and was mistaken for another species called the Olingo. The poor lady was swapped from zoo to zoo for years as she refused to breed with all her potential male suitors as scientists thought she was just being fussy. Not quite so cuddly and considerably smaller at just a millimetre across, a new species of water beetle was recently discovered living right under the scientists’ noses; a river flows through the campus of Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and the newly named Hydraena Ateneo has always lived there minding its own business amongst the rotting vegetation.

Quick reminder that La Vida will be holding their Fayre on the 19 September. There will be a lot of people there from 10am waiting to help YOU! I will also be there to resolve your computer issues. UNPAID!!!! Advertising over, let get on to the article. Delta! The forth (4th) letter of the Greek alphabet, and is also the number 4, is derived from the Phoenician letter ‘dalet’, from which we get our Roman D and the Cyrillic Д OR is it thinly disguised malware pretending to be the greatest gift since the Trojan Horse? Actually! Both! So! Why all this talk about Greek letters and malware? Well, this week, I’ve had a number of emails and people approach me concerning something that has been installed onto their machines and is now causing havoc. What is it? It is called Delta and is a program that offers a web search engine (delta-search. com) and toolbar which are being promoted through other free programs. So, in preparation for this article, I typed “Delta Toolbar” in my search favourite engine to find out more about it and was presented with page upon page of “How to remove Delta from your computer”. It took several hours of searching to find out what Delta really was! It is also defined by anti-virus and antimalware providers as a PUP or potentially unwanted program! This is because once installed on your computer, it will hijack your browser homepage and replace your default search engine. Furthermore, this program will display ads and sponsored links in your search results, and may collect search terms from your search queries.
So far it sounds annoying but not a great problem until you realise that not only are they collecting information about what you’re searching for, which is a heinous invasion of privacy, but compound the invasion by possibly (no absolute proof yet) accessing personal details that can be sold to unscrupulous individuals for the purposes of identity theft and similar acts of attrition. Like toolbars over the world, with a few rare exceptions, they positively invite viruses and other malware to set up home on your system. The real problems start when you try to remove it and although there are a few intriguing twists and wrinkles, the process is a predictable list of logical steps, and should take anyone between 30 minutes and 4 hours to completely remove it. First, uninstall it, and anything that you find and haven’t directly asked for. Second, Remove all reference from your internet browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome and others). Third, change your search engine option back to what it should be. Forth, Use a registry cleaner to (carefully) remove any references to it in the registry. Fifth, Run a good antimalware program to finally check that you have everything. Sixth, when all steps have been done and you still haven’t gotten rid of it, ring me! We all love to solve problems! Some people enjoy Suduko, while others do crosswords, more still indulge in quizzes and more power to them all. As technology seems littered with problems, I will find plenty to keep the “little grey cells” (Hercule Poirot) working this week and look forward to more email and conversations. Have fun :-)

The first 15 minutes were dominated by the home side, to no surprise for the travelling Huercal-Overa side as they knew that much pressure would need to be soaked up to get anything out the game. But in the 16th minute the ball found its way into the Huercal-Overa penalty area

with beachcomber john Boat Fishing. ‘Pugwash Pete’ went out this week with Shane and his son Lewis, they all caught plenty of fish. They caught about 80 mackerel, lots of small red snapper and pickerals. Lewis is a really keen up and coming (as he says) fisher boy. He’s a great lad with plenty of questions which is nice to see. It was an enjoyable day. See photo of Lewis and a couple of mackerel. The boat fishing boys from up Javier way are still catching more than we are! And I’ll remind everyone they have a better position on the Med. (That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it.)

Shore Fishing. ‘London Bill’ has had a good week catching melva tuna, mackerel, Atlantic scad, palomete and one sea bass. All we caught spinning around Garrucha’s harbour rocks and Macenas rocks. Another ‘Bill’ over on holiday from the UK spun around Garrucha’s rocks and caught 15 good size Atlantic scad and one melva tuna. Bill didn’t know about having to have a license and he was lucky! Coarse Fishing. ‘Baza Barry’ fished again with his mates from the UK and caught plenty of carp and barbel from Baza Lake (Negratin). Barry also caught what he thinks was some sort of chub. I caught a few many years ago and know they are in the lake and are either rare or hard to catch. I’ve never seen one bigger than 1/2lb. ‘Abbey Angling’s’ first match of the winter series was fished at the Eden Canal. Fishing at Murcia you cannot get past the bleak, but at Eden it is full of the ‘Terrible Terrapins’ ranging from an inch diameter to the size of a dinner plate. There was a fair flow on the water, but we drastically need a good storm to flush the water through. Although the winning weight was fairly good most anglers were struggling to make 10lbs, bait varied between maggot and corn with bread taking small mullet. Since the clubs have been managing the water there seems to be less litter on the banks, which is good news. All the lads send their best wishes to Don Whitney on a speedy recovery

All details are available on their website www.abbeyangling.com or from the Match Secretary Terry Screen on 965328368. The Albox fishing club meets every two weeks or so at Bar Wassy. For details of the next meeting tel Sid 634 313 650. Latest license information. There is a new loophole for those without a nie number who want an Andalucian beach and/or boat fishing license. It will mean a trip in person to Almeria with a friend who has a nie number and it has a 50/50 chance of working! The other loophole for fishing the beaches and boats in Andalucia without an NIE document is to make a trip to Murcia. Or the new UK sea fishing license should suffice BUT although we have been told this can be used here I have not seen a copy of this rule on paper and so it could be a problem if pulled up by the police who probably don’t know about the rule. There is now a loophole for those wanting coarse fishing licenses for Andalucia who don’t have NIE documents or/and don’t want to do the 24 hour course in Spanish, see me for more details. There is talk of an agreement between all regions for any license to be used elsewhere, watch this space. I’m pleased to report the Beachcomber’s three web cams are working again and the other good news is they work on both 32 and 64 bit systems and on any browser so checkout Mojacar’s weather and Mediterranean Sea conditions here. www. beachcombermojacar.com/ beachcomber-webcam/ For more info see John at Beachcomber Bar Restaurant Mojacar Playa or tel 950473099. 19th Hole Golf Society. Cucador. Thursday 5th September saw the beautiful course of Valle del Este play host for this Pairs Texas Scramble to 18 of our members. The weather was beautiful as was the course as always, in beautiful condition throughout, with the greens being particularly good. The team of Mark Danson and Don Harbron playing very consistently netted a 5 under par to easily win from the inspired pairing of Nigel Greenwood and Dave Denyer scoring a net par 71 in spite of Nigel acquiring a spiteful slice from the tees, with Mike Donarski and Peter Dow finishing on net 72 taking third place on count back. Mark Danson displayed clearly why he plays off a 2 handicap, his driving, and sometimes necessary, rescue shots were unbelievable with his drives travelling farther than most folks go on their holidays, except on the 18th, Don had successfully sent his drive down the middle and, with a little bit of gentle chiding, Mark said he would give his drive some real welly. He carefully set up and said “watch and learn you Guys” wound himself up and unleashed a monster. Well it would have been if he hadn’t topped the ball which raced into bushes some 15 metres in front of the Tee!! Poor old Terry Caddick is still
in the doldrums with his game, in an effort to improve his results his dear wife kissed him goodbye, made sure he had his sandwich box safely in his cool bag and said “really try to play nicely this week so the man who writes the report will not be able to write nasty things about you”. Sad to say it didn’t work ,Terry and his partner Syd Walker finished with a very poor nett 78, a result that caused Syd to idly remark that it would have been better if he (Syd) had given him a kiss rather that the kiss of death he had received from his wife. Thanks to all the members who support the 19th Hole Golf Society. Results. 1st Mark Danson/Don Harbron Nett 66 (5) 2nd Nigel Greenwood / Dave Denyer Nett 71 (9) 3rd Mike Donarski / Pete Dow Nett 72 (8) Nearest the Pin. 6th Hole Dave Denyer 12th Hole Nick Pogson 14th Hole Alan Chippendale The 19th hole G/S is now arranging weekly games at various courses in the area, our home course, which we play fortnightly, is Aguilon.
