mother of Mikaeel Kular charged Mikaeel’s mother is charged with MURDER: Rosdeep Kular faces court in Edinburgh following tragic death of her three-year-old son. The mother of Mikaeel Kular was today charged with murdering her three-year-old son, who went missing last week.

for a laugh more than anything. If I meet someone then all good and well but I won’t be losing any sleep over it.’ Miss Kular continued: ‘I do have to say I like none of this new age, airy fairy men and wearing more make-up than me c**p.’ She listed her main interests as ‘being a mum’ and ‘family’, adding that she likes ‘vodka’ and ‘staying up late’.

Rosdeep Kular, 33, attended a hearing lasting a few minutes held behind closed doors at Edinburgh Sheriff Court this afternoon, after which it was announced that she faced a murder charge. She has also been charged with ‘attempting to defeat the ends of justice’ in connection with the death of Mikaeel.

Miss Kular’s estranged husband Omotoso Adekoya, a Nigerian taxi driver, is the father of her three oldest children, while the father of Mikaeel and Ashika is a Pakistani man who has had no contact with them. Mikaeel was reported missing by his mother at 7.15am on Thursday. She claimed she put him to bed the night before and was shocked to discover he had disappeared overnight with his coat, shoes and gloves. Hundreds of police officers and neighbours searched desperately for the child for two days before his body was found in woods a few yards behind his aunt Pandeep Kular’s bungalow in Kirkcaldy, Fife – 25 miles from his Edinburgh home.

Ms Kular - who was referred to by her married name of Adekoya - did not enter a plea, and following the hearing she was remanded in custody until her next court appearance on January 28. It emerged today that she had posted pictures of the youngster online as she paid tribute to the ‘beautiful little monster’ before he disappeared. The mother used an online dating profile to share photographs of herself with Mikaeel and his four siblings, saying she was dedicated to ‘my kids’ future’.

Family members spoke of their devastation, describing Mikaeel as a shy and playful boy who never left his mother’s side. Pandeep, 37, who is Rosdeep’s sister, said: ‘We’re devastated. We’ve just lost him.’ Mikaeel’s grandmother Harjinder, 59, a retired doctor who is Miss Kular’s mother, said: ‘This has been such a difficult time and my head is all over the place. I just want to be there for my daughter but I am appreciative for all that has been done to help us. I’m very sad.’

Ms Kular, who has split from the boy’s father, told potential suitors she was looking for a masculine man but added that her children would always come first, according to The Sun. The mother wrote: ‘I’m working hard to get what I want in this life and make something positive from it, for me and my kids’ future.’ She added: ‘I’m a single mother of five beautiful monsters, so if you’re not keen on kids I suggest you “move on”. ‘I’m on here

Speaking from their detached home near

the woods where Mikaeel was found, her husband Dr Bangarpet Krishnaswamy added: ‘I’d like to thank all the public and the police for the search, which sadly turned out to be futile. I am sorry, I am too upset to say anything more.’ Miss Kular used to live with Mikaeel and her four other children in the bungalow in Kirkcaldy but moved to a flat in Edinburgh last summer. Yesterday floral tributes lined the Kirkcaldy bungalow’s front drive where Mikaeel and his twin sister Ashika used to play. Olga Park, 78, a retired nurse who lives opposite the aunt’s house, said: ‘They were always well-dressed, well turned out. They were beautiful little kids. ‘They used to run about outside but never did we hear them cry. They were always smiling. Mikaeel was always just playing around the back door, where his mother was sat, or he would sit on the step beside her. And then they would be running about. ‘Sometimes they would pick up the wee stones out of the neighbour’s drive and throw them and then they got told off for that. They’d get told off or shouted at if they went too far down to the road. ‘They always stayed where mummy was. They were no bother. They were just normal children. In the house, you would sometimes see them at the window and if granny came up, you’d see their little noses above the window

ledge. ‘The twin sister is now without her brother. It is so sad. It is very upsetting knowing this happened to such a cheery little boy.’ Miss Kular’s close friend Corinna Logan, whose children used to play with Mikaeel, said she had joined the search with other friends but no one had been able to get in touch with Miss Kular. Upon hearing the news of the arrest, she said: ‘I cannot get my head round it, I’m too upset.’ Local resident Khalida Hussain, 30, said: ‘I saw the wee boy a week before Christmas. He was always with his brothers and sisters, they seemed very close. They were happy. ‘If you opened the car door they would all come running up to you. It’s such a shame. I haven’t been able to sleep I’ve been so upset.’ A man called Wes who works for parcel carrier Yodel said he had delivered gifts to Rosdeep Kular’s home and always thought the children seemed bright and happy. He said: ‘I have delivered a lot of presents, things like scooters and wee toys to the house. The kids would always come rushing out to see what I’d brought.’ Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

Furious French Ryanair passengers launch revolt

took off from Spain again it was too late to head for Paris, where airports have night time noise restrictions. Instead, the plane landed in Nantes, western France, where everyone was told they would have to spend the night.

Furious French Ryanair passengers launched a ‘barbaric’ revolt against plane crew because of anger over a delay, it was claimed today. Police were called when they abused staff of the low-cost airline, refused to accept instructions, and stole duty free products including alcoholic drinks and perfume from trollies. The angry rebellion is said to have taken place on a flight which took off from Rabat, in Morocco, to Paris’s Beauvais airport last Saturday week. France’s Metronews today reports that it all started when a passenger among the 170 people on board became seriously ill. The crew had to divert to Madrid to deal with the medical emergency, meaning that by the time they

The flight from Rabat to Paris should have been just two-and-a-half hours long, but was rapidly turning into a 24 hour saga - meaning tensions were high.

‘I am neither a robber nor a hostage taker. We were tired and annoyed by a mismanaged situation. We were thirsty, hungry, and had no information on our fate. ‘We compensated ourselves by taking some drinks and food. After seven hours stuck in the plane, instead of two and a half, people needed to eat.’ Following a few hours in a hotel, Ryanair eventually provided coaches to Paris, where the passengers arrived on Sunday morning. A Ryanair spokesman said that a ‘flight from Rabat to Paris Beauvais diverted into Madrid after a passenger became ill on board. ‘On arrival in Madrid, the passenger disembarked and was assisted by local medical services and the aircraft continued onwards to Paris a short time later. ‘However, due to an airport curfew at Paris Beauvais the aircraft diverted to Nantes Airport. Passengers were provided with overnight hotel accommodation and were transferred to Paris Beauvais by coach the following morning.’ Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

It was at Nantes airport that the trouble really started, with one baggage handler saying passengers displayed ‘almost animal and barbaric behaviour towards the plane, the crew and the ground staff.’ Police arrived to keep the peace, but they could do little to stop the passengers’ disgraceful behaviour continuing on the plane. Cigarettes, food, drinks, perfume and ‘anything else of value’ was stolen, says Metronews, while ‘uhappy’ and ‘especially disrespectful passengers’ effectively took their crew hostage. One passenger told the paper: ‘I have nothing to reproach the airport staff or the police for, they were

Don’t miss your chance to WIN £1,000 The current Expat Survey research programme closes on 31st January It’s not too late to get involved in the largest international research study of those living outside their country of origin. Wherever you have relocated to in the world and whatever you are doing now, if you haven’t already joined in, The Expat Survey still really wants to hear from you before the 2013 programme finally closes at the end of this month. There are three surveys in the programme – ‘Migration & Lifestyle’, ‘Retail & Finance’ and ‘Travel & Health’. All live links can be found on the homepage at www.theexpatsurvey.com and when you complete all three parts you will automatically be entered into its free prize draw to win £1,000, which you can opt to donate to charity if you wish. Your opinion really matters to the research team. Each questionnaire has been designed to not only gauge your views on popular lifestyle and consumer topics, but also invites you to tell them about your experiences on life abroad. Led by the ex-head of research from BBC World, the specialist research team is independent and has received responses from more than 100 countries so far. “We have been thrilled with the response from expatriates from all walks of life around the globe who have shared their stories with us. It has been a truly engaging experience for the team and has provided us with unique insight enabling us to establish a very in-depth understanding of those residing in a foreign country” said Emma Wood, Project Director. “In a world of rapid globalisation where physical and virtual boundaries no longer exist due to growing freedom of movement and technology, it is essential to interpret and comprehend these dynamics. What motivates relocation in different parts of the world? What challenges do expatriates face? What do they expect from those that service them? How do they communicate and

what do they respond to? Our aim has been to really zoom in and examine all of these elements.” Emerging highlights show a broad spectrum of online shopping behaviour. 69% of expats have purchased multiple travel tickets via the internet in the last 6 months, versus just 12% on groceries and essentials; as they opt to shop locally to engage in their adopted communities and eat native produce when not on the move. Analysis of spending habits has revealed some fast growing online trends when it comes to expatriates making purchases from .com stores outside their country of residence. 55% bought books, CDs and DVDs online in the second half of last year. 78% spent up to £100 on shoes, with 66% treating themselves to clothes up to £100 every month. Almost 70% of respondents have made it clear that delivery charges are an important consideration when shopping online, with 42% making arrangements with friends and family to take goods out to them on their next visit. Amazingly and despite the growing volume and nature of currency exchange specialists 72% still transfer their money via their bank. “On behalf of the team I would like to convey our gratitude to the many thousands that have joined in so far. What the programme has really demonstrated to us is that it isn’t just about percentages and statistics, but about getting to the heart of what, when and particularly why”, said Emma Wood. The Expat Survey does not share any personal information with third parties and has no links with Governments. To participate in the programme please visit www.theexpatsurvey.com as soon as possible. Dancing on Ice 2014 By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’

week 2

All the celebrities skated together for the first time tonight making it much easier to see the quality of this years show. The judges were also given back the power of the vote (thank goodness) with 50% counting towards the final result. Opening the show were Susanne Shaw and Matt. They performed some unusual and very difficult lifts, with excellent choreography and musicality. Unfortunately, I think some of the technical elements were not just as clean as they could have been probably due to nerves. I gave her 7.5 and the judges 31.0. Next out were Sam Attwater and Vicky. Sam is a very powerful skater but again I think nerves got him too! His performance lacked confidence and I found his upper body strength a little weaker than normal. I awarded him 7.5 and judges 31.0. Zaraah Abrahams and Andy then skated. Zaraah has improved the most for me. This week her core was suddenly lifted

which gave her much more speed and strength over the ice. After the performance we discovered that she had skated with a rib out of position - Ouch! I gave her an 8.0 and judges 30.0. Bonnie Langford with Andre then performed to Sway. She is the oldest in the show but her flexibility, rhythm, line and finish are superb. I awarded her 7.5 and the judges 28.0. Next were Gareth Gates and Brianne who skated nicely but because of a weak core his lifts were rather shaky. He also needs more depth of knee to strengthen the quality of his technical skating. I gave him 6.5 and the judges 25.0. My favourite Ray Quinn with his partner Maria then skated to a samba rhythm. This was a clean slick performance full of the wow factor!! I love him!! I gave him 9.0 and he was also the judges favourite with 35.5. Next out was Todd Carty with Alex skating a solo to ‘O Sole Mio’ Coming out in

a gondola and performing solo for the first time (his partner remained in the gondola!) his performance was a poor week 1 skate! Sorry Todd you shouldn’t even be in this line up! I gave him a generous 2.5 and the judges 12.0. Next was Beth Tweddle and Lucasz. Being a gymnast Beth’s flexibility is never questioned but for me she lacks dance performance and leaves me cold. I gave her 8.5 and the judges 33.0. Closing the show were Hayley Tammadon and Dan with a great presentation to ‘If my friends could see me now’ For me her lifts looked a bit heavy but nevertheless a good quality performance. I awarded her 8.5 and the judges 32.5. The bottom 2 ended up being Zaraah and Todd and after a skate off which was no contest Todd was finally voted off the show. Yeah! game on. Now who will be able to deliver and overcome the nerves to continue to see this competition through to the end. Only time will tell. Until next week - Keep Dancing!

First picture of nun who had baby when she didn’t know she was pregnant (and named it Francis, after the Pope) This is the first picture of nun and new mother Roxana Rodriguez. The 33-year-old woman, a nun with the order of the Little Disciples of Jesus, stunned her mother superior and local church chiefs after giving birth last week to a baby boy which she has called Francis, in honour of the current Pope. Sister Roxana initially claimed to have no idea that she was pregnant and thought her labour pains were ‘stomach cramps’ when an ambulance rushed her to hospital in severe pain after being called by fellow nuns when she collapsed at her nunnery. Roxana Rodriguez, a nun with the order of the Little Disciples of Jesus, stunned her mother superior and local church chiefs after giving birth last week to a baby boy+2 Roxana Rodriguez, a nun with the order of the Little Disciples of Jesus, stunned her mother superior and local church chiefs after giving birth last week to a baby boy Her picture was published in the Italian daily newspaper Corriere Della Sera, who have carried out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the birth of 9lb Francis and have spoken to the the social worker in the case. It shows Sister Roxana, who is currently in the first floor maternity unit at the San Camillo de Lellis hospital in Rieti, 50 miles north of Rome, as she took her vows and became a nun in the order last September. She told her social worker Anna Fontanella:’I am so happy. I feel more of a mother than a nun, I think that’s obvious. I decided to call him Francis in honour of our wonderful south American Pope. I do not feel of guilt. I will be keeping him and bringing him up. Nun gives birth after being rushed to hospital with stomach pains… and she says she had no idea she was pregnant Zara gives birth... and is home SIX HOURS later: Royal’s no-nonsense approach revealed as Mike

Tindall tweets ‘the girls are doing great!’ ‘He is a gift from God. I am little worried about all the publicity, not only in Italy but in El Salvador and all over the world. Everyone is talking about this and I don’t think I will be able to return to my home country, let alone Rieti.’ Sister Roxana has written a letter of apology to the order’s mother superior general Elvira Petaraca - the woman who in September she solemnly promised to follow her vows of ‘chastity, poverty and obedience’, the three main pillars of the Little Disciples of Jesus Order. The nun had only arrived in Italy last summer at the nunnery in Rieti and has told officials that the father is a man from her native El Salvador but she has so far not named him. Father Benedetto Falcetti, priest at the nearby St Michael’s church in Rieti, said: ‘It all happened last spring, around March or April time when she was back in El Salvador to get her passport renewed. ‘She has not said who the father is but I understand he is an, shall we say, old flame of hers from when she was younger. At some stage I expect she will tell the father that he has a son and they will be reunited but I don’t know when that will be.’ The nun stunned her mother superior and local church chiefs after giving birth last week to a baby boy which she has called Francis, in honour of the current Pope+2 The nun stunned her mother superior and local church chiefs after giving birth last week to a baby boy which she has called Francis, in honour of the current Pope However not all sure Father Falcetti ‘s delight at the birth, apart from the anger of her superiors, sister Roxana has also upset her fellow nuns at the convent in Campomoro. One nun who answered the telephone at the convent and who asked not to be

named said:’No we must certainly not be going to visit her. What she has done is not right at all. She has betrayed her vows. She will not be coming back here.’ Since news of the birth was announced the hospital has been flooded with gifts for the nun and her new baby including nappies, clothes and money. Hospital director Pasquale Carducci said:’We have had to put extra security on the maternity wing because of all the interest. Like any new mum she is delighted but obviously this has created a great deal of clamour because she is a nun. ‘There have been calls and gifts from dozens of well wishers and she has passed on her thanks to all these people. Medically she and the baby are doing well and I expect them to be discharged by Tuesday at the latest.’ Massimo Casciani, spokesman for the local bishop of Rieti, monsignor Delio Lucarelli, said: ‘At some point the bishop will visit the nun but at the moment he has not yet seen here. ‘We shall be investigating the circumstances behind - the child could be the fruit of a consensual rapport but it could also have been as a result of violence.

The January Blues Celebrated a bit too vigorously over Christmas and the New Year? Or found the only way to get through the strains of the awkward family get-together was with a little anaesthetic from the nearest bottle? The dog days of January are by far the most popular time for people to decide they need a booze-free spell to clean out the system and get back on track to normality.

Windows

HIGH SECURITY LOCKING A Rated Energy Efficient

Windows, Doors, Patios & Enclosures Happy in the knowledge that they didn’t buy a fly enclosure because they’re going to be nice ‘n’ warm this winter just as they were nice ‘n’ cool this summer!

But spare a thought for those who decide they really must stop for a while – and make the terrifying discovery they simply can’t. For a limited number of people every January that is stark reality. There may be a thousand compelling reasons to cut right down or stop altogether – the harsh words, fuelled by too much alcohol, the offence caused to family and friends who did little to earn it, the broken promises or just one thumping hangover too many. But sweet reason and logic have no effect whatsoever. The craving is too much. Just one more drink – only one (or two at the most) as a pick-me-up … and the whole vicious cycle starts over again. Traditionally January sees a swelling in the numbers of those seeking help from Alcoholics Anonymous, although not all of them last the course. Two or three weeks away from alcohol has convinced many that they were overreacting and don’t really need to stop, just drink a bit more sensibly in future. AA’s view – supported by overwhelming evidence from the medical and therapeutic community – is that denial is one of the defining characteristics of alcoholic/addict. It is simply repeating the same behaviour but expecting different results. Resources to help the English-speaking sufferer are thin on the ground in this part of Spain. For many years the only AA group in Almeria province (in either English or Spanish) has met twice-weekly in Mojacar. But a new group is opening its doors in Albox on Sunday 2nd February, reflecting the large number of expats in the Arboleas-Albox area, and the need for this kind of support group. AA’s doors are open to anyone, and it is free. It supports itself through entirely voluntary contributions from committed members, and won’t accept anything from outside its own ranks. It is not a secret society, but as its name implies it guarantees complete confidentiality and anonymity to anyone who seeks its help. It doesn’t keep any membership records or do head counts, and it doesn’t make any statistical claims of success rates. But it known to have nearly two and a half million members worldwide who are staying sober on the 12 Step programme and the practice of living life one day at a time. January Sales - tis the season to be folly!

Fa, la, la, la, la... do lally pip. Let’s be honest, some people are plain bonkers, aren’t they? Come the January sales, (which started in November this year as profit squeezed retailers try to crank up sales, following a dismal economic forecast) cash strapped shoppers tend to throw caution to the wind and buy the most hideous, pointless tat they wouldn’t dream of buying if it were being sold at full price. Why? It’s as if they’ve become possessed by the devil - like Damien was in The Omen, only some hapless bargain hunters, with more money than sense, aren’t eying up a menacing Rottweiler growling in the distance; they’re busy forking out far more than 666 paying for useless tat they don’t need or don’t like. Regret purchases, not bargains....ready for the return items queue, or the bin. The January sales are supposed to save you money. Yes, you read that right... SAVE you money.

636 261 240

Email: info@sunergyalmeria.com www.sunergyalmeria.com

That means... You were going to buy the item anyway, only you didn’t buy it earlier because you couldn’t afford to at the full price. You actually like the item, or you need it. Not because someone else grabbed it first or because a tag on it says ‘reduced to HALF PRICE’. It actually fits you (clothing). A pair of size 8 jeggings is hardly likely to fit a 55 year old mother with 4 kids and a Kenwood Chef that’s in regular use. It suits your purposes for now, not in the future. Impulse buying for stuff you’ve never considered owning before is not prudent sales shopping. The January sales aren’t supposed to encourage you to blow money on unsuitable stuff, nor are they there to help cash strapped shoppers like you, YES YOU, get into debt (or further into debt) by enticing you to behave like mindless sheep rounded up by retail marketers out to swindle you of your hard earned cash with enticing advertising and cut price offers that are merely cash extractors ....Baa, baa....Heres a little quiz: a bit like Mastermind.. Ask yourself this question: do rational individuals join the queues of the Harrods sale in freezing weather at 5am eagerly awaiting the doors to fling open so they can descend on a heap of dirty, crumpled, probably ripped tat that is really only fit for cleaning the windows? Hmm.. No......... Correct.

Question 2: do you need that ‘camel faux fur tote bag with a lurid pink zip’ by ‘X Designer’ reduced from 1000 to 889? No, I thought not. You weren’t getting a bargain at all; you were just being seduced into buying it when it probably wasn’t worth 889 pence, let alone 889 squid to start with! Yes, you do know the answer and that is correct.

January Sales So you’ll pass...

Here are some rules you might consider living by when seeking out sales bargains that really are bargains, not a cut priced extravagances. I got the clothing and accessories tips from Leslie Field, a fashion journalist on high profile magazines and daily newspapers who makes as much sense today as she did in the 80s when I first read them in her book and took them to heart ‘ saving me a fortune over the years. So the credit for this advice goes to her, not me. Amortise: put money into clothing that you will wear a lot, and pay far less for garments you will hardly wear. Forking out 500 for a quality coat you will wear daily many times over makes a lot more sense than forking out a fraction of that sum on an evening dress or future wedding outfit. Only buy items that you would consider buying at full price if you had the money, not stuff you wouldn’t buy or don’t need. Impulse buys are a defo’ no, no. Sales should be tackled like military campaigns with plenty of advanced planning to eye up and ignore (rather than destroy) the enemy ‘tags.’ Never buy for future needs. If a clothing item doesn’t fit you now, don’t buy it. By the time you’ve shed those surplus Xmas pounds at Weight Watchers, the item will be out of date or out of season and will only be fit for eBid or PreLoved. Stock up on essential small goods that aren’t size dependent: stretch lingerie, tights, socks, toiletries, make up and skincare... If you can only afford to buy one item, make it a good quality accessory: a good pair of boots, a quality handbag or tote in a neutral shade. Not several items from rubbish shops that reduce already cheap items by a pound or two in the sale. Good accessories can transform an outfit and make it appear far more expensive than it really is. Far better to do that than buying some hideous designer top in a sickly Mustard shade with a purple animal print backdrop just because someone grabbed it first in the scrum and then put it down again to grab something else instead. They put it down for a reason. It was ghastly. For clothing sales, remember this: about 80 per cent of sales items are bought in for the sales and can suffer quality A CHIMNEY OR FLUE NEEDS CLEANING assurance issues, or ONCE A YEAR! WHY? they are unshiftable items from their • T O REDUCE THE RISK OF A CHIMNEY FIRE BY REMOVING SOOT AND TAR regular stock because • TO REMOVE A BLOCKAGE SUCH AS A BIRD NEST! they are vile and no• TO INCREASE THE EFFICIENCY OF YOUR one wants to buy them APPLIANCE (ESPECIALLY WOODBURNERS) at full price. So would it suddenly become a FOR PEACE OF MIND BOOK YOUR SWEEP TODAY desirable investment purchase because it FOR A FRIENDLY, PROFESSIONAL, CLEAN, SERVICE has a half price tag CALL PAUL ON 617150300 OR 850993057 attached to it? No. The sales are a great A CLEAN CHIMNEY for ‘considered IS A SAFE CHIMNEY! purchases’ (goods that cost a lot) but only if you actually need them in the first place: Computers, TVs, white goods, furniture etc. Serving the local community since 2003 I am assuming that you aren’t another techno-sheep....baa.. baa... lured into PC World by pointless design feature upgrade advertising for items that won’t enhance your life one jot and will only serve to put a greater ‘dent’ in your credit card. www.shinform.net ....something we must info@shinform.net all be mindful of these days. Mojacar A thirty minute downhill stroll or a five minute bus ride from Mojacar village finds the beaches, hotels, urbanisations, golf resorts, shops, bars, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs that make up Mojacar Playa, a low rise beach resort with an apparent Andalucian style. The beaches of Mojacar are a main draw for the resort, yet it does have much more to offer. The Parque Comercial, a popular centre with lots of shops, cafes and restaurants, denotes the access point from Mojacar Pueblo to the beach road and promenade, turning left towards Garrucha town offers some quality hotels and beaches, a golf resort, and a quieter holiday location, turning right, invites the livelier resort centre.

to be noted that in the high season months of July and August this normally peaceful holiday spot comes alive, and the beaches, hotels, shops, restaurants, bars and clubs are bustling with holiday makers. There is a reasonable size expatriate community in Mojacar, not surprisingly many have chosen to live here permanently, with a wide mix of aged groups from the retired to a good number of younger couples and families. Transport There are regular buses that run the length of the playa along with a scheduled service from the playa to the pueblo, the timetables are detailed on the bus stops and available from the tourist information centres. Taxis are readily available, and there is a taxi rank next to the commercial centre.

No foods are banned so meals offer balance and variety and are family-friendly. The portion size from each food group will vary depending which plan you follow. The ‘Body Magic’ booklet they provide gives ideas to help you raise your activity levels. Meeting as a group can provide valuable support.

Slimming World’s weight loss plan encourages you to swap high-fat foods for low-fat foods that are naturally filling. You choose your food from a list of low-fat foods they call ‘Free Foods’, such as fruit, vegetables, pasta, potatoes, rice, lean meat, fish and eggs, which you can eat in unlimited amounts. There’s no calorie counting, no foods are banned and you’re still allowed the occasional treat. You can get support from fellow slimmers at weekly group meetings and follow an exercise plan to become gradually more active. The plan is designed to help you lose about 1lb to 2lb a week.

Five facts about colds

by Angels nursing and Homecare

Some surprising facts about colds, including what causes symptoms such as a blocked nose, and why mucus turns thick and yellow 1. Cold viruses don’t make us feel ill It’s your own immune response that makes you feel ill. When you get a cold, the virus attacks the nose and the back of the throat, and it doesn’t take long for the body’s natural defences to start to work. The immune system detects the virus and floods the area with white blood cells and chemical messengers, and these trigger various symptoms such as headaches and a blocked nose.

erectile tissue (similar to the tissue in the sexual organs). When you have a cold, the blood vessels swell up as infection-fighting white blood cells flood to the area. This narrows the air passage in your nose and restricts the airflow as you breathe. A decongestant spray can reduce the swelling and allow you to breathe more easily. 3. You can catch a cold through your eyes When an infected person coughs or sneezes, they release droplets of mucus into the air, or into their hand if they use their hand to cover their mouth. If you get these droplets on your hand (for example, by shaking hands or touching contaminated objects such as doorknobs), you can pass them into your eyes or nose when you touch them.

2. A blocked nose is due to swollen erectile tissue During a cold, the lining of your nose is the battlefront. When your nose feels blocked it isn’t because it’s full of mucus, but because the blood vessels in your nose are inflamed. The nasal lining is made from

5. Yellow mucus is caused by white blood cells When your immune system is fighting a cold virus, one of the first symptoms is clear, runny mucus from the nose. As the cold develops, mucus usually becomes thicker and yellow, then green. White blood cells cause this change in colour and texture as they flood to the nasal area and increase in number as the cold progresses. Many people think that yellow or green mucus is caused by bacteria, but this isn’t the case. It’s because there are billions of white blood cells in the mucus.

4. Women get more colds than me Women have more colds than men, and this is probably due to increased interaction with children. Children get around seven to ten colds a year, compared with two to three for adults. So people who spend a lot of time with children, such as childminders, nursery teachers or school teachers, are more likely to pick up the viruses.

Fascinating Facts About Sneezing! By Vicki Santillano, DivineCaroline

15

4. Pepper and pollen aren’t the only things that make us sneeze. Dust, pollen, and pepper are cited as the most common sneeze catalysts, but they’re by no means the only ones–or the strangest. Particularly pungent aromas and temperature fluctuations, particularly colder air, can make us sneeze, too. Plucking our eyebrows also triggers sneezes in some because it can stimulate nerves in an area connected to the nose. Rubbing one’s eyes and popping pimples cause the same reaction for similar reasons. About one in three people sneeze when exposed to bright lights, an inherited trait called photic sneezing or ACHOO (Autosomal Dominant Compelling Helio-Ophthalmic Outburst) Syndrome, which also involves sneezing in rapid succession (usually two or three times). Snatiation is a term used to describe the multiple sneezes that come after eating a big feast; it’s also passed do 5. Sneezes travel fast and furiously. One person’s sneeze can travel up to one hundred miles per hour. The particles and spit emitted when we sneeze can travel up to five feet away, making it all the more important to cover our mouths and noses to protect innocent bystanders. Even if no one’s standing right next to us, the bacteria sent into the air by our expulsion can spread up to 150 feet away. You could be walking down the street through someone’s sneeze bacteria and not even know it, so just think about that the next time you fail to reach for a handkerchief. 6. Superstition’s nothing to sneeze at.

I’ve always looked forward to my dad’s sneezes. (Yeah, I know how weird that sounds.) Not that I’m constantly hoping he’ll catch a cold, but he has the best sneeze I’ve ever heard. It’s loud, powerful, and it sounds like he’s crying out “Blllleeessss ya!” each time he does it. His sneezes sound wholly satisfying–the antithesis to the barely-audible squeaks emitted by the woman I sat next to on the bus this morning. The same kind of irritants (dust, pepper, etc.) can create the same internal reaction in all of us, but its externalization is highly individualized. We all know that everyone sneezes differently, but have we ever considered why? For being such a common, everyday occurrence, that little (or big) expulsion of air is actually a complex process involving more nuances than many of us realize. 1. Sneezing’s official name is sternutation. The word sternutation sounds like a serious medical procedure, but it’s really just another way of saying sneezing. However you say it, the method remains the same. When something tickles the nose lining, the nerves located there send a signal to the brain, which initiates a chain of messages to other parts of the body–chest, abdomen, face, eyelids, the mucus glands in the nose, even the sphincter–that work together to expel the irritant. When we fall asleep, those nerves are at rest, which is why we don’t sneeze while we snooze. 2. We can’t sneeze and keep our eyes open–and no one knows why. Scientists are still unclear as to why our eyes reflexively close during a sneezing episode. Some believe that it’s an evolutionary adaptation meant to protect our eyes from whatever particles come flying out of our noses and mouths when we sneeze. Others claim it’s just one of many muscle contractions that take place during the progression. And the old wives’ tale about eyelids closing to keep the eyes from popping out is impossible. While a hearty sneeze can put a good amount of pressure behind one’s eyes, it’s not enough to do that kind of damage. 3. How we sneeze could say something about us. Of all the characteristics that potentially reveal our inner selves, I never thought sneezing could be one of them. However, body language expert Patti Wood says otherwise. She did Benadryl-sponsored study of 547 people and their sneeze habits, coming up with four types of sneezes that she believes are personality indicators. The “Correct” carries Kleenex and is careful to cover her mouth when sneezing, meaning she’s respectful of others and likes to maintain a dignified disposition. The “Supporter” tends to hold in sneezes rather than risk sneezing on someone, which indicates a quiet and caring character. The “Expressive” makes a big production out of sneezing and often sneezes multiple times at once, possibly making her a showy and dominating person. The “Driver” sneezes loudly but quickly, making her direct and forwardthinking.

There’s a lot of superstition involving sneezes, right down to which way we turn our heads. Among some people, such as the ancient Romans and Greeks, a sneeze to the right was a sign of luck and a sneeze to the left predicted a portentous future. Most cultures have an assumed response after someone sneezes: “Bless you” in English, “Salud” or “To your health” in Spanish, and so forth. In almost every language, the response translates to a wish for the sneezer’s good health. It’s thought that saying, “Bless you” came from Bubonic Plague times when one sneeze could’ve signaled a person’s assured demise, but that is just one of a few theories out there. Others claim that sneezing is the soul’s attempt to leave the body because it’s written in the Bible that Adam came to life by God breathing into his nose. As Milhouse from The Simpsons explains, “When you sneeze, that’s your soul trying to escape. Saying ‘God bless you’ crams it back in.”

SOLTIMES JANUARY 2014

When I imagine living the social life of someone like Charmaine, it’s all Champagne parties, Michelin restaurants and five-star hotels. The reality is somewhat more pedestrian. Superficial. Talentless. These are the super egos who can manipulate the

individual. Like Charmaine they are territorial and highly competitive. They may have an enviable lifestyle but behind all the glitz and glamour we have superficial characters, without real friends or genuine happiness. They trade off their good looks and media image, over-hyped, of course, pandering to the whims of their management teams and their bank balances and floating on the cloud of ambition at any price. Then there’s Ryan, every girls’ dream of male perfection and desire. He might be play-acting as Prince Charming, physically toned to make every girl squirm and squeal with delight and lust but is he true to his name? Of course not. He uses Lucy, who swoons whenever she sees him as a way to make Cinderella jealous. Lucy’s naivety and innocence is responsible for being star-struck by Charmaine Lewis, star of the pantomime with two singles in the top twenty, a cameo part in Doctor Who and engaged to premiership footballer Liam Phillips. And if that doesn’t impress you she also brags about having 700,000 followers on her Twitter account! She treats Lucy as her skivvy and Lucy seems to be perfectly happy being used as a doormat and a dog-walker because she is intoxicated with the feeling of stardom and fame. Lucy is completely bowled over by the most glamorous celebrity that

she had ever met. She was infatuated by her swishy magnificence and grateful for Charmaine’s help in being given a comedy part in Cinderella as the back end of Daisy the Cow! Lucy Tilley’s claim to fame, after six years in the theatre was to have her name printed in the programme. She wears a hideous costume, air tight and claustrophobic. The exact opposite of glamour you might say. Her fame is contagious bug.

shiny,

Ryan had had seven top five UK singles, with a cameo appearance in Emmerdale as the hunky farmer boy. He was the man that Lucy admitted to being truly, madly, deeply infatuated with. After all, he was the most eligible bachelor in the UK. But what a jerk and eventually, after a bout of humiliation, Lucy’s bubble bursts and she sees through this thin coating of stardom and fame. Her disillusionment awakens her true understanding of celebrities and she becomes wiser and more confident. Ben is Lucy’s bovine partner, the front bit. He gloats that Lucy gets to look at his ass! She sees plenty of that during performances. He has talent and has been working on writing a play which he also directs. His ambition takes him along a completely different route from Charmaine and Ryan. He is true to himself and modest even though he is very talented. I consider the reality of living Charmaine’s life. With her fake boyfriend, fake tan, fake hair, fake boobs and a noticeable lack of sincere friends. Living in the real world must be hard for

these glamorous celebrities. Lucy has always felt that this celebrity bubble floats permanently on cloud 9 being pandered to and pampered. Botox, liposuction, silicone boobs are an integral part of being seductively desirable. It sums up Charmaine. She is fifty per cent silicone and one spritz of hairspray from being a serious fire risk. So, there you have it! Celebrity status. And what’s in it for Lucy? It’s a bit like being friends with a Jackie Collins novel. She makes my life feel more glamorous. Before you cringe, remember what I said about her naivety? She eventually sees through this act of pretence. I’m starting to get the feeling that Charmaine is full of crap as well as silicone and filler. Well done Lucy. Finally. Disillusionment kills her infatuation and brush with the world of glamour. Back to reality. A showdown with Charmaine, accused of playing the pathetic card to manipulate men becomes a moment of self-realization for Lucy. Charmaine has been jealous of Lucy’s natural beauty and goodness and wanted to eliminate any opposition. Her awe turns to feeling that she is a bit sad and lonely, her life as hollow as it could be. She musters up the courage to take central stage and to make something of her acting instead of hiding behind a costume or her tap-dancing shoes. perhaps there is a real Prince Charming waiting for her in the wings? Not a Ryan or Liam but a sensitive and kind man? That would make a perfect ending wouldn’t it? Publisher: Novelicious.com (digital publisher) Available from Amazon.

Do it yourself (DIY) is the method of building, modifying, or repairing something without the aid of experts or professionals. Academic research describes DIY as behaviors where “individuals engage raw and semi-raw materials and component parts to produce, transform, or reconstruct material possessions, including those drawn from the natural environment (e.g., landscaping)”. DIY behavior can be triggered by various motivations previously categorized as marketplace motivations (economic benefits, lack of product availability, lack of product quality, need for customization), and identity enhancement (craf t smanship, empowerment, community seeking, uniqueness). The term “do-it-yourself” has been associated with consumers since at least 1912 primarily in the domain of home improvement and

maintenance activities. The phrase “do it yourself” had come into common usage (in standard English) by the 1950s, in reference to the emergence of a trend of people undertaking home improvement and various other small craft and construction projects as both a creative-recreational and cost-saving activity. Subsequently, the term DIY has taken on a broader meaning that covers a wide range of skill sets. DIY is associated with the international alternative rock, punk rock, and indie rock music scenes; indymedia networks, pirate radio stations, and the zine community. In this context, DIY is related to the Arts and Crafts movement, in that it offers an alternative to modern consumer culture’s emphasis on relying on others to satisfy needs. The abbreviation DIY is also widely used in the military as a way to teach commanders or other types of units to take responsibility, so that they’d be able to do things themselves just as a preparation for their own future.

History Italian archaeologists unearthed the ruins of a 6thcentury BC Greek structure in southern Italy that came with detailed assembly instructions and is being called an “ancient IKEA building”. The structure was a temple-like building discovered at Torre Satriano, near the southern city of Potenza, in Basilicata, a region where local people mingled with Greeks who settled along the southern coast known as Magna Graecia and in Sicily from the 8th century BC onwards. Professor Christopher Smith,

director of the British School at Rome, said that the discovery was “the clearest example yet found of mason’s marks of the time. It looks as if someone was instructing others how to mass-produce components and put them together in this way”. Much like the instruction booklets, various sections of the luxury building were inscribed with coded symbols showing how the pieces slotted together. The characteristics of these inscriptions indicate they date back to around the 6th century BC, which tallies with the architectural evidence suggested by the decoration. The building was built by Greek artisans coming from the Spartan colony of Taranto in Apulia.

Fashion DIY amongst the fashion community has become very popular. With the use of social media such as YouTube, a great number of people watch videos on a daily basis. YouTube has an array of DIY fashion videos from distressing jeans, bleaching jeans, redesigning an old shirt, and studding denim, just to name a few. This new trend is increasingly becoming more and more popular. There over 1,000 videos that individuals have posted demonstrating how to do those things. There are also other DIY videos that individuals could look up such as DIY jewelry, DIY room decor, and DIY hairstyles.

Home improvement The DIY movement is a re-introduction (often to urban and suburban dwellers) of the old pattern of personal involvement and use of skills in upkeep of a house or apartment, making clothes; maintenance of cars, computers, websites; or any material aspect of living. The philosopher Alan Watts (from the “Houseboat Summit” panel discussion in a 1967 edition of the San Francisco Oracle) reflected a growing sentiment: Our educational system, in its entirety, does nothing to give us any kind of material competence. In other words, we don’t learn how to cook, how to make clothes, how to build houses, how to make love, or to do any of the absolutely fundamental things of life. The whole education that we get for our children in school is entirely in terms of abstractions. It trains you to be an insurance salesman or a bureaucrat, or some kind of cerebral character. In the 1970s, DIY spread through the North American population of college- and recent-college-graduate age groups. In part, this movement involved the renovation of affordable, rundown older homes. But it also related to various projects expressing the social and environmental vision of the 1960s and early 1970s. The young visionary Stewart Brand, working with friends and family, and initially using the most basic of typesetting and pagelayout tools, published the first edition of The Whole Earth Catalog (s u b t i t l e d Access to Tools) in late 1968.

Positive economic conditions in the UK, including a stronger pound, could fuel a rise in overseas property purchases in 2014. However, buyers should realise that real bargains in the Eurozone are getting harder to find as European markets hint at stabilisation, said The Overseas Guides Company in January. by Jackie Nickolls The UK’s strengthening economy and bullish housing market should this year give more British people the confidence to invest in holiday homes in Europe, where property markets are behind the UK in terms of recovery.

“Scandinavians were prominent buyers in the Mediterranean in 2013, thanks largely to the economic buoyancy and strong currencies of their countries giving them serious buying power,” said Richard Way, Editor at The Overseas Guides Company. “It’s the turn of the British buyer to return to the overseas market in force – especially as the pound is expected to maintain and possibly gain value in coming months against the euro.” While average property prices in expat hot spots such as Spain, Portugal and France remain below the peak of 2007, there are signs that prices are levelling out and even rising in some of the more desirable resorts. The Overseas Guides Company looks at key markets in more detail:

Spain Average property prices are expected to bottom out in Spain this year, but don’t expect growth to necessarily follow, as Spain’s depressed economy and oversupply of housing stock will hinder any upward pressure. That said, in the most sought-after areas of the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Murcia, Costa Brava and Mallorca, prices have already stopped falling and in some cases are rising year-on-year. Buyers should

have realistic expectations and recognise that market conditions have been built into many prices, so there is little point expecting to have an offer that is, for example, 30 percent below the asking price accepted on a prime property. Researching the local market remains as important as ever in 2014. In the resale market there are now examples of repossessions being more expensive than comparable properties being sold by private vendors. This is down to banks being able to offer attractive mortgages with their properties, countering the negative perception of higher prices - but of course, for cash buyers this is irrelevant.

Portugal The Portuguese property market has seen stabilisation since the second half of 2013. This is thanks in part to a lack of new-build property, particularly in key Algarve resorts such as Albufeira and Vilamoura coming to market, the effect being a rise in demand. In addition to this, Portuguese banks are beginning to offer more financing options with repossessed property to non-resident buyers, whereas in recent years this has been limited. In the higher end of the market, interest from non-EU buyers should continue to increase as awareness of the Golden Visa grows.

headlines, but in actual fact, the new rules shouldn’t affect or deter the average expat retiree or second homeowner there. Value for money resale properties are still in abundance in France, with the South-West and Languedoc being favourite areas – and expected to continue to be in 2014.

Turkey With the Turkish lira hovering around record lows against the pound, the cost of living in Turkey has become especially good value for British expats and homeowners, making it an attractive destination. Meanwhile, the country has been tipped as a future global economic powerhouse – along with Mexico, Indonesia and Nigeria, together making the ‘MINT’ nations. Turkey arguably offers more exciting investment potential than other more established Mediterranean destinations. For more information visit http://www. overseasguidescompany.com

Check your door frames are sturdy, well fitted and that the hinges are attached securely. Glass panelling in doors is particularly vulnerable and should be fitted with laminated glass if possible. Most modern patio doors come with a multi locking system. If your patio doors are not secure, get specialist advice to make sure suitable locks are fitted at the top and bottom. If your letterbox is close to your lock, fitting a letterbox cage will prevent thieves being able to reach inside. You may want to fit a door chain so you can speak to strangers with the door partially locked, but bear in mind these can be flimsy and should not be left on all the time in case they prevent you exiting the house quickly in an emergency. .. ... in a p S in e s ou h a y u b ou y re fo e b What to know Part 1 Overview

If you are considering buying a property in Spain you will need to bear in mind that the legal system and steps to follow are different from those you may have experienced in the UK. It is important to note that while many British nationals enjoy life in Spain, a large number who have bought properties in Spain over recent years now face serious problems with their homes. This guide is intended to help you obtain the information you need to make a full and considered decision about your property purchase in Spain.

General advice It is advisable to begin with research. A good place to start is the step-by-step guide on how to buy a home in Spain published by The Association of Property and Mercantile Registrars of Spain. You may also find it useful to look at the Residentes Europeos site by the Diputación de Alicante. Spanish Property Insight provides information and advice on buying a property in Spain. It includes guides to buying property in Spain with information on checks you should carry out before buying a property, including checking the property registry report, title deeds, planning permission and licence of first occupancy, among others. This guide has information in English on the rights and duties of buyers, when and how you should pay for the property, and useful contact details. This guide also provides information on property taxes, selling a property and letting a property.

Use a chartered surveyor The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) exists in Spain and there are between 30-40 residential chartered surveyors working across the peninsula and the islands. Members of the RICS are qualified and experienced professionals offering independent and impartial advice. You can find out more about RICS España and contact details of a chartered surveyor in your area on the RICS website. The College of Architects in each province also offers a list of independent specialist surveyors.

Purchasers checklist

It is strongly recommended that you choose a lawyer who is specialised in Spanish land law. The Spanish property conveyancing system is different to the UK and you should ensure that those involved in the transaction are qualified professionals, who have an expert knowledge of how the system works.

Before you complete your property purchase you should make sure that:

Exercise extreme caution if an estate agent, promoter or lawyer urges you to cut corners to save money/time.

the property and land for sale match the details registered and the sellers are the registered owner(s)

If you choose to work with a British estate agent, promoter or lawyer, check that they are qualified, reliable and have experience operating in Spain. Check that they are registered with the Law Society in the UK and specialise in International Transactions.

there are no debts or charges, such as a mortgage, on the property

If your lawyer is based in Spain, check that he/she is registered and practicing with the local Colegio de Abogados (Bar association) by asking for their registration number and verifying this with the Colegio de Abogados. You can find a full list of all the Colegios de Abogados across Spain on the Consejo General de la Abogacia Espanola website. You should also check that your lawyer has professional indemnity insurance and not sign any papers or hand over any money until you have taken independent legal advice. Please read our advice on seeking independent legal advice and contacting professional associations. Although the British Embassy cannot recommend a lawyer, we do have lists of local English-speaking lawyers and qualified translators available on our website. See your local consulate pages for details.

Use an independent translator If you do not have a good understanding of Spanish, make sure that you get all contracts and relevant documentation translated by an independent translator. You can find a list of accredited translators and interpreters in Spain on the Spanish Ministry for Foreign Affairs website.

you have seen the Land Registry extract (nota simple), available from the Colegio de Registradores (translations into English for an additional fee), and checked the following details:

there are no legal proceedings initiated against the property for contravention of land planning law you have checked that planning permissions are in order and the property is a legal build. This is particularly relevant when buying off-plan or direct from a developer. The town hall can inform you whether the building has all licences and permissions and provide details of the type of land. If the property is built on rural land or land that is not classified for construction, additional confirmation should be sought from the regional government as to whether they have authorised the construction if you are buying an off-plan property, confirm that the property has been certified as finished by a registered architect and registered as a new build in the property register. The registration should also provide details of the developer’s insurance against structural and other defects in the construction. In the case of a private build (the previous owner built their own house and decided to sell before ten years had lapsed) you will need to request these details separately you have checked the latest town plan to see whether or not the plot you wish to buy has any building restrictions, is in a green zone or includes a public pathway or similar. This can be viewed at to the town planning (urbanismo) department of the local town hall you have carried out property survey. Whilst this is not obligatory it is wise to get a chartered surveyor to check the property

Make sure you have seen the following documents: a paid-up receipt for the previous owner’s annual property tax (IBI). It is also wise to get a certificate from the town hall proving that there are no unpaid rates from previous years the Catastral certificate giving the exact boundaries and square metres of your land the licence of first occupancy or habitation certificate issued by the town hall. You will need this document to connect to electricity and water companies. Developers cannot force you to complete without this licence. receipt to prove all utility bills have been paid by the previous owner if applicable, a certificate signed by the President of the Community of Property Owners stating that there are no outstanding debts. You should be aware that if you later find that there are such debts outstanding, as the new owner, you assume the debts for the current and previous year (two years in total) as from 1st June 2013, all homes for sale or to let in Spain are required by law to have an energy efficiency certificate. If you are considering buying a property, the seller is obliged to show you this certificate On completion, the public deed should reflect an accurate description of the property. It is advisable that you register the property in your name with the Land Registry as soon as possible to ensure full protection of your rights. The notary can even send advance notification to the Land Registry electronically once the public deed is signed. We have published further information on buying offplan property in Spain.

Bank guarantees If you decide to buy off-plan, or a property under construction, always insist on a bank guarantee (aval bancario) to cover your stage payments. All developers are obliged under law 57/1968 to secure all deposits received with a bank guarantee. Additionally you should ensure that your deposit is paid into a special escrow account and not into the developer’s general account. We have published more information about bank guarantees.

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Q. My husband deceased nine months ago in the U.K. with an English will, but no Spanish will. We had a holiday home in Spain in joint names. What do I have to do now? A. As there is no Spanish will unfortunately it will be necessary to convalidate your husbands U.K. will and probate document for use in Spain. The first step will be to obtain probate on the U.K. will. When this has been done it will be necessary to have Hague´s Apostille affixed to the U.K. documents and then have the translated and stamped by an official translator. When this has been done your solicitor in Spain will inform you if any further documents need to be obtained for the documents to be acceptable in Spain. (English wills very often refer to trusts, which cause complications and expense when convalidating for use in Spain). In this case I am afraid your inheritance tax will be subject to surcharge as the time limit to deal with the tax office in Spain is 6 months unless you request and extension in writing within the first 5 months. As you and the deceased are non residents of Spain, the inheritance tax is paid in Madrid, but no travelling is needed as your solicitor will have and agent in Madrid who for a very small fee will do the legwork in Madrid under the solicitors instructions. The expense and timescale of the convalidation for use in Spain of the English documents will depend on the wording of the will. To avoid complications in the future make sure you instruct your solicitor to prepare a Spanish will for yourself after you have finalized your acceptance of inheritance.

Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Almería since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid and has offices in Mojacar and Almeria High Street.

Good for pets health

Keeping pets active and happy in winter is good for their health – and ours! That’s the seasonal message from leading veterinary charity PDSA. Could you spot the signs of hypothermia (low body temperature)? In severe cases your pet won’t display telltale signs such as shivering. But it will be disorientated and lethargic with shallow breathing and a slow heart rate. Never leave a pet in the car:

just a few minutes can lead to hypothermia. When temperatures tumble small breeds, puppies and older dogs are most likely to suffer from hypothermia, particularly when wet. And whippets, greyhounds and other dogs with low body fat or thin coats are high risk. What to do if you suspect hypothermia Prevention is always better than cure, so keep an eye on your pets and make sure they always have access to shelter and warmth. Susceptible dogs should wear a suitable dog coat when out in colder weather. However, if you suspect

your pet is suffering from hypothermia, acting quickly and correctly could save your pet’s life. Immediately remove your pet from the cold environment and take them into warm, but not hot, surroundings. Warming up too quickly can be harmful. Call your vet practice and follow any advice you are given Ensure your pet is dry – if they are wet then dry them gently with a towel Gradually raise your

25

pet’s body temperature, either using a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel, or a hair dryer on a low heat. Keep the hair dryer moving and hold it at a distance from your pet’s fur, as you would for yourself. Your vet will probably advise bringing your pet in for an appointment, and it’s important to do this even if your pet seems to have recovered. S o ur c e:ht t p: // w w w. pdsa.org.uk/

Freezing Cold Temperatures enter because pets are just as susceptible to wind chill as are we. For indoor pets, make sure that you keep the house at a comfortable temperature, even if while you are gone. Just because you are

at the office doesn’t mean your pet won’t get cold if the heat is turned way down. Harsh Wind Chill Keep outdoor time to a minimum for your pets when the wind is blowing during the winter months. A simple 10 mph breeze will lower the perceived temperature by 6-10 degrees, or more. A body sweater is a good idea for short haired pets, just like how you yourself might need a coat when going out. Keep their hair as long as possible and take them into a warm environment as soon as possible to keep your pet healthy. Snow and Ice If you pet is outside in snowy or icy conditions, make sure you wipe them down with a wet towel when they come back inside. Beyond the benefit of keeping your pet dry so they won’t be as cold, this also allows you to

remove any mud, salt, antifreeze, or other irritants that could be in your pet’s fur. Antifreeze is life threatening to pets and is most often found on the ground during winter months, making it especially important to wipe your pet down. Car Engines Cats and other small animals often find warmth in the engine bays of cars during the winter. A few quick raps on the hood of your car before you start it will ensure that no animal, pet or otherwise, are hurt from moving engine parts.

Spanish property is the time finally right to buy?

“There Has Never Been A Better Time To Buy In Spain Than Now,” Says Mark Stucklin, Founder Of Spanish Property Insight, Which Offers Independent Analysis Of The Property Market In Spain. “Unlike During The Boom Times When There Was A Buying Frenzy, There Are Now Fewer Cowboys Operating In Spain. The Malpractice And Corruption That Was Rife Just Doesn’t Exist Now. People Are Also Much Better Informed, So The Chances Of Getting Ripped Off Are Much Lower,” He Insisted. But Above All, With The Bargains To Be Had, It’s A Buyers’ Market. “A Buyer Today Is In A Much Better Position Than Those Who Bought In The Boom. “Prices Have Dropped 50 Per Cent In Some Areas.

100g shredded greens or spinach, washed 400g can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 4 tbsp vegetable oil

Add the coconut milk and a splash of water. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for five to seven minutes. At this point I take out the chillies as I might mistake them for spinach and inadvertently bite into one but, if you aren’t using green vegetables, leave them in. Add the greens and cook for a few minutes, then add the drained sweet potatoes, the chickpeas, most of the tamarind, the garam masala and coconut cream. Taste, adjust the seasoning, adding more tamarind to taste, and serve.

1 tsp mustard seeds 1 onion, finely chopped 3–5 green chillies, whole but pierced with the tip of a knife 25g root ginger, peeled weight, finely chopped 5 fat garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped

¾–1 tsp ground cumin 400ml creamy coconut milk ½–¾ tsp tamarind paste, dissolved in a little hot water, to taste

Put the sweet potatoes on to boil and cook until just done; it should take around 10 minutes.

Once the popping diminishes, add the onion and green chillies and sauté for two to three minutes or until just softening, then add the ginger and garlic; sauté these gently for one minute. Add the tomatoes, salt, turmeric and ground coriander and cumin and keep sautéing for four to five minutes. Now taste; it should seem harmonious and the tomatoes should be soft but still retain their form.

Happy Birthday Vincent!

Golden Rascal Vincent Mansi was delighted when his son Andrew arrived from the UK at Sacko´s to surprise Vince on his 80th Birthday. A great time was had by all. During his working life Vince had been a professional entertainer he was one of the Black & White Minstrels and appeared in London Musicals including Fiddler on the Roof with Topol. When he was presented with a gift from Rascals he said “In my 10 years with Rascals I have been given the opportunity of singing lots of solos including Old Man River, Besame Mucho and If I was a Rich Man.” He has brought to the Rascals not only a fine voice but great stage presence always popular with the audiences. For further information on Rascals look on www.therascals.org or call Errol on tel: 96 531 9834.

Quicker Up Than Down In most cases, the laws of Nature and Isaac Newton decree that things go down faster than they go up. For example, trees take ages to grow, yet can be chopped down in a trice. Or me; Running downhill I can achieve a turn of speed that makes tortoises cast envious glances at my receding rear and has snails pulling over to the kerb, muttering profanities under their breath. Uphill, however, those same tortoises will overtake me with a sardonic grin, and the snails can be heard complaining about heavy traffic causing snarl-ups. However there are exceptions – Christmas trees! Putting the tree up involves racking my brains trying to remember where the Christmas boxes are, staging a small scale archaeological expedition to extract them from underneath all the summer related necessaries that are on top of them, and dragging them into the house. I assemble the tree while uttering the mantra ‘It’ll do for this year. We’ll get a new one next year’ and hastily cover it randomly with everything sparkly that I can lay my hands on, in order to divert the eye from its sparsely

needled branches. And there it sits in the living room in all its plastic splendour, the culmination of a couple of hours of effort. Getting it down is another matter altogether. The boxes, although technically empty, seem to have all manner of detritus in them – bits of tinsel, plastic needles, etc. so I clean them out. Then I start taking the baubles off the tree, only to find that each and every bauble is covered with dust. So I clean each and every bauble before nestling it gently into its box. The lights are next. They have a Tangle Factor embedded in their DNA, so I spend a delicate half hour untangling them without losing my temper – much. Of course they are dusty too, so I clean them, carefully. The tree is now standing naked, almost needleless – and dusty. So I flick at it gingerly with a feather duster, vainly willing the few remaining needles to stay put, at least until it is back in its nice clean box. Done! Except that the living room floor is covered in artificial pine needles with incidental tinsel sprinkles. So I vacuum it. Tomorrow more needles and tinselly bits will have appeared by magic overnight, so I will vacuum it again. And again, until about June. Christmas trees go up in a couple of hours, but take about 6 months before they are truly down! They are much quicker up than down! josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

From Frédéric Chopin to John Lennon - By Air. are literally hundreds of them. We are all familiar with John F Kennedy in New York and Charles de Gaulle in Paris, but there are airports named after composers such as Chopin in Warsaw, Poland; Prokofiev at Donetsk in the Ukraine, and Liszt in Budapest, Hungary. There are a plethora of military leaders from Shaka the great Zulu warrior king in Durban, to Chinggis Khan International Airport (Genghis Khan to you and me) in Ulan Bator, Mongolia and predictably the Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport in Corsica. There is even a sprinkling of film stars, like the Indiana County Jimmy Stewart Airport and John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana, California . . . “The hell it is!” The church is also represented, with two Pope John Paul II’s; one in Krakow Poland and the other in the Portuguese Azores. And Mother Teresa at the Tirana International Airport Nene Tereza in Albania. Then as you might expect, more presidents, prime ministers and premiers than you can shake a stick at, with the aforementioned JFK having three airports bearing his name – New York City; Ashland, Wisconsin and surprisingly, La Paz, Bolivia. Bob Hope in Burbank; Sherpa Tenzing and Edmund Hilary in Nepal, Federico Felini in Rimini - the list goes on and on. And amongst the famous and grand a few puzzling ones like the Brockville Regional Tackaberry Airport in Ontario Canada, which is named after one George badbirdnow@gmail.com Tackaberry - the bloke

We were in Italy recently and I was impressed with the way the Italians immortalise their heroes by naming airports after them. Our first experience of this was in Venice, where we encountered the Marco Polo International Airport. Then it was on to Rome and Leonardo Da Vinci. In fact I discovered that the Italians have gone bonkers in this respect, with Florence, Bologna, Pisa, Genoa, Parma, Bergamo, Naples, Rimini and Perugia, all naming their airports after great Italians. From artists to explorers and scientists to saints - and in Palermo, two Mafia fighting judges – their names have all been perpetuated in this way. Being an Englishman, I am not familiar with this practice and it made me wonder how many other airports around the globe, bear the names of national figures. If I had heard that Corvera Airport had actually opened for business, I couldn’t have been more surprised - there

whose company re-surfaced the runway. We in the UK on the other hand stick with the utterly uninspiring handles like Heathrow, Gatwick, and East Midlands. We all know that the likes of Newcastle, Manchester, Luton and Southampton airports are in or near to those cities – it’s obvious – so let’s have some imagination shown here. I would like to start a campaign therefore, to rechristen these and other British airports with the names of some of our greatest historical figures. I mean, it’s not as if we are short on choice. It’s true that we have the John Lennon airport in Liverpool. A great tribute to a great musician and why not, after all New Orleans has the Louis Armstrong Airport. We also have the George Best Belfast City Airport and the Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster. This is a good start but much more should be done. Besides in Robin Hood’s case, he was pretty much a fictional figure who almost certainly did not exist in the way he has been portrayed by the likes of Errol Flynn and Richard Greene. He probably stole from the Salvation Army as well as the rich and I bet his men never washed or wore poncy Lincoln green, and were anything but merry except when they hit ye Olde Ale. So what about some suggestions? Here are a few of my own. There is always going to be controversy when using politicians’

The Opening

John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Work on the Palacio de La Paz continued slowly. Worryingly slowly, however the funds available for the project seemed to be disappearing alarmingly fast. The architects Fleecem, Skinem and Leggit had brought in contractors from the UK and they needed to acclimatise to the Alquerian environment. There had already been casualties. After swimming in the reeking Río Verde two ‘brickies’ from Sunderland suffered physiological changes. They are now starring as pantomime fairies in Nigel Ruffbody’s production of ‘Giggling in the Greenwood’ at the East Daftborough Apollo. Once the building is completed it will be fitted out as a leisure and entertainment centre for the Alquerian people. No one barrio would dominate with all entertainment and pastimes non-controversial. The idea was to soothe nerves and foster tolerance. Reirmucho S.A. of Almería agreed to handle these activities. They duly set about researching local Alquerian customs to find something common to both barrios. After much work they came to the conclusion that the only common customs appeared to be womanising, gambling and drinking. The last two were easy to achieve in the form of a casino with an integral bar. As for the first, they sought the advice of the capable and ever willing Manuela. No foreign entertainers could be persuaded to visit Alqueria. The Pueblo has been on a black list ever since a group of Morris Dancers performed there some two years ago. After being in the Village for only two hours they needed counselling and all turned in their bells and ribbons. Most visitors from the outside tended to drive cars with flashing blue lights on. Whether by luck or sheer hard work it is difficult to say but the day of opening eventually arrived. All Alquerians, apart from Loco Paco who was busy shoeing his Saharan Dung Beetle made the trek across the Río Verde. The opening ceremony was itself a triumph of absurdity. Rodriquez of the Newcomer’s barrio and Poyato representing the Hill People pulled the lanyard simultaneously. What looked like an extremely large brown paper bag dropped away revealing the structure. To say it was the most hideous building imaginable would be an understatement. The Newcomers blamed the Hill People and vice versa. The ensuing riot lasted for three days and nights, during which time, ironically, the new building came into its own. It was pressed into service as a first-aid station for these and subsequent inter-barrio hostilities. It appears that the only common aspect between the two barrios are the casualties caused by the inter-barrio fighting sparked by their differences. names, but hey, how could we not re-name Heathrow: London Winston Churchill Airport. And at the heart of our capital, how about London City Christopher Wren. There is only one possible name for Birmingham, being so near to the Bards home town, and that surely has to be the Birmingham William Shakespeare International Airport. Similarly Norwich re-named after a city daughter -Elizabeth Fry. But it need not be a pre-requisite that the figure concerned is born in the appropriate city, but where there is a strong connection this would be reason enough. For example: the Bristol Isembard Kingdom Brunel Airport. If you think that’s too much of a mouth full, then think yourself lucky you don’t live close to the M’Vengue El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba International Airport in Gabon! It could be decided by we the people and not only would it be a long overdue display of patriotism, but a signal to the world that here is a country that is proud of its history.

We had an upgrade to our satellite system last week and I realised, that’s why our life expectancy has improved. Nothing to do with medical science, better diet or even Darwin’s evolution theory, it’s all down to technical support helplines! The technicians were in our house all day last Saturday. Three hours they said it would take! I hope the satellite system works better than their watches. They spent their time gouging out a place in our lounge wall for the unobtrusive satellite hub to go. It was about as unobtrusive as Mount Everest! They fed cables through the wall then to top it off, and for no reason that we could fathom, they dug a big hole outside our front gate, like one of those traps that Tarzan would sometimes accidentally fall into in the jungle. To their credit, they did fill the hole in, but somehow managed to use only half the soil they had dug out of it, so at the moment we have a mucky knoll outside our front gate. But who cares, now we have more channels! We can watch “The Weakest Link” in four different languages at the same time and now most of the channels have child safe options so TCM, the Turner Classic Movies channel, has been sanitised and become TCP! And we have a new remote control! The next day, the system broke down! After a few choice words, similar to, “Oh cripes,” and “Golly, that’s dashed bad luck,” we called the helpline; we took it in turns listening to the soothing music being played to us, whilst the technician was helping another client; we initially smiled when we heard a friendly voice telling us, every so often, that they valued our custom; we chuckled when that same voice told us our call would be recorded for training Graham is married purposes. Eventually, after three hours, we began to get to Helen and has a a little niggly, you know, about on a par with international daughter, Alice. He relations just before a war! Then I knew; Darwin was wrong, lives part of the year near Albox, but works it has nothing to do with evolution, we live longer now so we can spend so many years of our lives waiting long enough in Qatar, teaching. If to speak to a trained operative! you wish to contact Graham regarding When we finally reached a human he solved our problem, this article email: thanked us for our call and said it had been his pleasure to helenandg@yahoo. help us. A Kodak Moment Remember the good old days when having dinner in a restaurant; someone would whip out their 35mm camera and photograph plates of food; then 23 or 35 shots later when the film was finished it would be sent off to be processed. A few weeks later when the photos were posted back they would then visit their friends’ houses to show them the photos of the dinner they had eaten a while back? As I suspected, none of us remember ever doing the above do we! What we of a certain age may recall however is that sense of excitement and trepidation. Firstly when a roll of film was sent off to be developed, then for the second time when the fat envelope thudded onto the doormat or was picked up from a processing lab like Boots. A commercial photographer could get a sneak preview at the lab but for us mere mortals we had no idea what results would slide out of the envelope. Nowadays it’s all so different and the word ‘Selfie’ has made it into the dictionary. Usually there were 24 or 36 frames on a roll of 35mm film; sometimes the number reel on the camera kept going and an extra shot or two could be taken before having to hand wind the film back into its cartridge. Simple pleasures eh! In the early 70s Kodak launched its Instamatic brand using a 120 cartridge which didn’t need rewinding. Coincidentally the 120 cameras were relatively slim line, not unlike the size and shape of the larger Android phones

today. 120 was a hugely successful format and Kodak only stopped making the cameras in the mid-80s, then the film cartridges a couple of years ago. Smaller niche manufactures have now taken over the reins for the many camera buffs out there. Until around 2000 film cameras were the norm rather than the exception. Then as technology leapt forward the digital era stormed the world of photography. In 2003 Kodak launched the EasyShare camera; it was the first camera to have an AMOLED display screen, the forerunner to the screens used on many phones and tablets nowadays. Kodak had conducted extensive market research discovering that women especially didn’t like the inconvenience of getting photos printed. So the camera was designed to plug straight into a Kodak printer. A year later they stopped producing film cameras, laying off 15,000 employees. The World’s first commercial digital camera was made by Kodak and sold under the Apple label in 1994. Even earlier in1986, the Kodak boffins created the first megapixel sensor; it was capable of taking a 7x5inch photo with its 1.4 megapixels. Even though their R&D was excellent Kodak’s bosses didn’t believe that digital would ever replace film. Competitors such as Minolta, Sony, Nikon and Fuji were so

much better at exploiting the new technology and making more stylish and importantly cheaper products! Kodak went from being a major player in the digital camera market and having 27% of the market in 1999 to filing for bankruptcy in 2012. What also didn’t help Kodak was that from about 5 years ago, mobiles and tablets got better and better cameras attached so people stopped buying as many cameras. Kodak also ceased production of their Kodachrome film in 2010 which was something Kodak execs never thought would happen. Kodachrome was introduced in 1935 and was the first commercially available colour film, responsible for many of the iconic images of the 20th Century. Steve McCurry took this shot in1985 for National Geographic using Kodachrome film, it’s known simply as ‘Afghan Girl!’

How many times have I told you to do a system backup “Just in case”? How many of you have followed that recommendation? Or do you have a manufacturer created backup that you can rely? At the time of writing this article, my favourite program to create this system backup is called “EASEUS TODO BACKUP”. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t other’s that are better or more intuitive! This free version is for personal use, should I use it for business I would happily pay money for it (but it you repeat that – I will deny ever saying it :-)!). To find it, open your favourite browser and go to <<http://www.todo-backup.com/products/home/free-backup-software.htm>> The “how to install and set up” of this program was covered months ago in an article for your Fav. Rag. So today you will be getting just a list of simple instructions on how to recover from that virus / malware attack that just won’t go away. Though, you need to know that, any programs, documents, music, videos, pictures, in fact everything not in the original image WILL BE LOST! So back up your data to an external safe device before you start. How To Restore Using TODO BACKUP 1. Turn on computer and insert the restore CD into the drive. Then Restart your computer, making sure that your computer will start up from a CD drive. 2. When the menu is displayed the first option “EaseUS Todo Backup” is highlighted. Just press the “Enter” or “Return” key. 3. Wait until Screen One appears. In the Free version the default screen is the “Recovery” option where you will see 3 options. 3.1 Disk/Partition Recovery.. 3.2 System Recovery. 3.3 File Recovery. Select “Disk/Partition Recovery” and click on the button at the bottom of the screen marked “Next”. 4. On Screen Two you will be shown a circle next to the picture of the hard drive, Click on the circle to put a dot in it and then click on the button at the bottom of the screen marked “Next”.

5. Screen Three wants to know which drive, if you have more than one, that you want to restore to. The default is the same one that it came from. 6. Screen Four confirms that the image will match the drive it will go onto and allow any minor changes to partitions (NOT advisable unless you understand what partitions are!). Click on the button at the bottom of the screen marked “Next”. 7. Screen Five confirms that everything is where it should be. If you are happy with everything click on the button marked “Proceed”. 8. One final warning is the “Last Chance Saloon” for backing out by telling you that you are about to destroy everything that is currently on your disk. When you click on the button marked “Ok” your image will be restored back to the drive that you have chosen. 9. Wait until the button at the bottom of the screen which is marked “Cancel” changes to “Finished”. Click in it to return to Screen One. Remove the CD, turn your computer off and then back on. 10. Your system is back to the way it was before it all went wrong. It will probably want to do a restart because “Windows” thinks something has changed, Click to allow this restart and then enjoy your fully restored and working system. BENEFITS OF ECU REMAPPING & WHY THE MANUFACTURERS DON’T DO IT!

part 2

ECU remapping will not only improve the engines power and torque figures, it will also sharpen the throttle response and widen the power-band. This will make the power delivery a lot more linear, which in turn will make the vehicle feel a lot livelier to drive and the engine more flexible. Manufacturers generally sell one vehicle that covers various markets, with different tax and emissions regulations; different climates with extremes of heat, cold, humidity; different fuel quantities; different operating altitudes, etc. A manufacturer has to take all of these factors into consideration and make substantial compromises in the vehicles operation. As a driving enthusiast, you do not need or want such restrictions placed upon your vehicles ECU and its performance therefore you can benefit from the hidden power and torque locked away within your engine management system. The other main benefit of remapping will be a reduction in fuel consumption. With the extra torque especially at the bottom of the rev range you will see a fuel saving, as it will require less throttle input to maintain motorway speeds, you can drive in a higher gear at a slower speed as well as helping significantly when fully laden, towing or on gradients and even in start stop traffic. Tonight and tomorrow, the second legs of the 2014 League Cup semi-finals take place and unless there’s a miracle at Upton Park, Manchester City (who lead West Ham 6-0) will be playing either Sunderland (2) or Manchester United (1) in the final at Wembley on 2 March. This weekend, there are 16 fourth round FA Cup-ties taking place, the pick of the bunch Bournemouth versus Liverpool, Manchester City v. Watford, Stevenage v. Everton and Sunderland against non-League Kidderminster Harriers. And the men’s/women’s singles finals at the Australia Open also take place this weekend. Football - Arsenal still lead the Premier League after a 2-0 win over Fulham. * A hat-trick by Samuel Eto’o gave Chelsea a 3-1 win over Manchester United. * Edin Dzeko scored Manchester City’s 100th goal of the season in a 4-2 home win over Cardiff who now prop up the table. * Tottenham won 3-1 at Swansea, Newcastle by the same score at West Ham, Crystal Palace beat Stoke 1-0, Norwich defeated Hull also 1-0, and Southampton drew 2-2 at Sunderland. WBA played Everton on Monday. * In the Championship, leaders Leicester triumphed 1-0 at Leeds to stay five points clear of QPR who beat Huddersfield 2-1. * Reading thrashed hapless Bolton 7-1 and there were also wins for Derby County, in-form Middlesbrough and also Nottingham Forest, who are now unbeaten in ten. * Leyton Orient and Scunthorpe top Leagues 1 and 2 respectively. * The latest La Liga games saw Real Madrid (with a Gareth Bale goal) beat Real Betis 50, Barcelona drew 1-1 with Levante, Malaga and Valencia drew 0-0 and Almeria lost 2-0 at Villarreal. Cricket - After getting whitewashed in the Ashes, England followed up by losing the ODI series 3-0 against Australia. This was England’s ninth successive defeat at all levels. Rubbish! Tennis - In temperatures of 41 degrees c./110f, Serena Williams was knocked out of the Australia Open by Ana Ivanovic. Caroline Wozniaki and Maria Sharapovaare also out, but Li Na and Victoria Azarenka remain in. In the men’s section, at the time of writing, Messrs Djokovic, Murray, Nadal, Tsonga, Ferrer, Wawrinka and Federer were still in. Rugby Union - The draw for the Heineken Cup quarter-finals is Clermont v Leicester, Munster v Toulouse, Toulon v Leinster and Ulster v Saracens. Motor Sport Bernie Ecclestone will quit as boss of F1. He faces a Court appearance later this year for bribery. Snooker - Ronnie ‘The Rocket’ O’Sullivan is the 2014 Masters champion after beating last year’s winner Mark Selby 10-4. In an earlier round, O’Sullivan scored a world record 556 points to nil, taking five frames in a row without his opponent, Ricky Walden, getting to the table, other than breaking off. Golf - There are two tournaments this weekend - The Qatar Open in Doha and the US PGA Tour Open in San Diego. And Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson started 2014 as the world’s top three golfers. Hockey - England’s men took bronze after losing to New Zealand in the World League semifinal in Delhi. Following a 3-3 draw, the Kiwis won the shoot-out 7-6. R.I.P. Two sporting icons died last weekend - athlete Sir Chris Chattaway, aged 82, who was the first recipient of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, and the former Wolves and England goalkeeper Bert Williams, MBE, at the age of 93. Did You Know? Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 5-1 in a PL game in 2005 without one English-born player in their team.

19th Hole Golf Society Cucador. Thursday 16th January was time for our Monthly Medal competition at Aguilon. With rain threatening several players looked anxiously skyward whilst praying to the sun god to beat up the rain fella, The course was in good condition but course traffic was busy with The Taverners in front of the 19th Hole, unfortunately the etiquette of golf was completely ignored by not allowing quicker players to pass, causing some fairways to resemble the M25 at rush hour, and causing some obvious frustration for our members being unreasonably held up.
