The search for wreckage from Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 has been moved 1,100km to the north-east following a fresh analysis of radar and satellite data. This fresh analysis suggests that the Boeing 777 – which vanished soon after taking off from Kuala Lumpur three weeks ago – was flying faster than had been initially estimated, and therefore would have run out of fuel more quickly. Five aircraft deployed to comb the new search area of the Indian Ocean quickly found multiple objects that ships will now try to locate. Items spotted from the air included two rectangular objects that were blue and grey: two of the colours in the aircraft’s livery. Others were white or light-coloured. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (Amsa), which is co-

ordinating the hunt, said photographs of the objects would be analysed to determine their origin. For the past week, aircraft and ships have been crisscrossing an area about 2,500km south-west of Perth, pinpointed as the most likely spot where MH370 is presumed to have run out of fuel and crashed, killing all 239 passengers and crew. Now search teams have moved to an area about 1,850km west of Perth, where their task will be easier. Not only is it closer to Australia, meaning spotterplanes can spend more time searching before they have to return to refuel, but the weather is more benign than further south, which is in the middle of a belt of strong westerly winds known as the Roaring Forties.

Whole building collapses after ‘engineer took out the wrong brick’

An engineer was left staring at a houseshaped hole after an entire building collapsed seconds after he dislodged a few bricks from the exterior wall. Video footage captured by a bystander shows the man standing in a cherrypicker dislodging bricks one at a time from the top of the front face of a derelict building in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester. He can be seen picking out the bricks when suddenly the entire building collapses into a heap without warning.

The building was once the home of troubled poet Francis Thompson and had a blue plaque to commemorate the fact. However, the property, which is privately owned, was boarded-up and had been disused for some time, according to Tameside council. According to The Manchester Evening News police had been called earlier that morning following reports of falling bricks and engineers were dispatched to make the building safe. No-one was hurt.

CLEAN UP WEEKEND

local News

With Easter not too far away neither are the summer holidays - I would dearly love residents to go out, in their respective areas, and pick up some of the litter which unfortunately has started to accumulate once again in various places of Turre and Mojacar, tossed away willy-nilly by inconsiderate people who are simply too idle and reluctant to use the public refuge bins! One especially bad area right now, from my point of view, is on the righthand side of the road stretching from Turre towards the new roundabout which has been put in near the crematorium. That new introduction, by the way, looks terrific but the rubbish and litter scattered nearby takes the shine off it. My wife and I have, along with a few other helpers, have done what we can in trying keep the area clean... and I know (from letters, paperwork collected) who these culprits are, the so-called litterbugs of the area, and I have a few address too. I won’t name and shame anyone just yet... but I’m thinking about it, especially the folk who walk their dogs and don’t care one hoot where the mutt does his/her business... outside someone’s drive, by a garage,

Dear Friends,

even near water butts and on the footpath. You can easily step out of your car and into a mess - it’s simply disgusting. And I hope this gets through to one specific, rather inconsiderate person near to where I live! Please do your bit and keep our area litter-free... knowing right now that Mojacar, with Vera, are two of the best places to live (and visit) in the whole world, according to The Telegraph newspaper. My band of rubbish-collectors - some wearing yellow traffic jackets - will be around over this coming weekend... please do your bit and help tidy up before Easter when I’m sure, several visitors will here. Let’s make a good impression. Yes? Tony Matthews

True Confessions of a Doctor...

It is rarely pleasant for true confessions; in fact they can be very rough. Nonetheless confessions set the truth free and keep the record straight. It allows me to give credit, where it is due. Before I talk about my confession, I would like to say a few things first. Many years ago, as a child, something happened to me that changed my life forever. Let me tell you my story: “When I was 7 my family and I moved West across the United Sates. It was an exciting time to travel, find a new home; meet new friends and have a new life full of adventure. Then one day a car in a crosswalk bumped my mother. It was very light and she barely fell over – but then she couldn’t get up. At first I thought she was joking until the ambulance arrived to assist us. Upon arriving at the hospital the doctors did their best but could not discover anything wrong. She was prescribed painkillers and muscle relaxants and sent home with the prognosis that all would be well in a few days. Within a few days, with much dismay, the symptoms did not alleviate in fact they worsened. This time the doctor prescribed even stronger medication and instructed her to go to physical therapy three times a week. We left with new hope. She began her physical therapy care. Unfortunately it did not get the results we so desired. In fact my mother would come home in tears after every session and remained bedridden. Three months transpired with physical therapy and now my mother’s trouble began to impact me. With my father out of the home it left me responsible for cooking, cleaning, walking the dog and caring for my mother and myself. Suddenly my adventure at 7 was quite different and not so exciting. She visited other therapists without results. Time continued to elapse. She spoke with her doctor again who referred her to an orthopedic surgeon. Unfortunately nothing was discovered and surgery to cut & kill the nerve trunk was the only option. This seemed ridiculous for my mother. She was only 26 and now bedridden, taking over 10 tablets a day with extreme pain debilitating almost all activities and

unable to care for me properly. She had always been physically fit and the accident was so minor. As time passed my mothers’ health continued to decline. After nearly two years of being bedridden, using all remedies offered, conventional or not, the doctors finally decided to send her to a special hospital where they would teach you how live with the pain. They had given up and ran out of options. One day at the hospital I heard a passing conversation about a local chiropractor. Curious to discover more I eves dropped. Now at the age of nine and very mature for my age I listened and heard of a possibility. Others had gone for differing troubles and many had positive results. I quickly rushed to inform my mother. My mother was very despondent and not very receptive. Still I pleaded with her; it was our last chance for hope. I can be very persuasive and finally she conceded to visiting the chiropractor. The chiropractor did a thorough consultation, examination and a detailed report where he fully explained my mother’s trouble. He then proceeded to adjust the spine of my mother. After the adjustment my mother was able to stand up straight and without pain for the first time in two years. My mother’s health soon returned. After a few weeks she no longer needed the assortment of medication. In a few months she had returned to the mother I remembered at 7. She no longer had what the doctors called a short leg since she was a child. Her menstruation returned to normal and she never again suffered from periodic headaches. My mother was back and better than ever! After two years of hospitals I witnessed a great deal of suffering, the results while at the chiropractor were so astounding that I was inclined to go to chiropractic school and become a chiropractor myself. It is strange how life can come full circle because now people come to see me with their health problems. They come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthmas allergies, numbness

in limbs athletic injuries just to name a few, they get such great results that some of my clients have decided to study chiropractic. And that is how it happened!” Here’s what some of my clients say: My daughter was asthmatic taking inhalers and medication daily. She was sidelined and unable to play with her classmates; now her health has improved so much she no longer uses medication or inhalers and is the captain of the football team! (L. Hamn) After injuring my back I could only play a hole or two, of golf, for almost two years. I was about to give up the game. This is serious because I am a professional golfer. I laughed at Dr. Jensen when he said I would be out playing again after only 2 weeks! But it was true and now I am at the top of my game. (S. Fernandez) I have suffered with constant headaches and migraines since my childhood, the moment that I met Dr. Paul and he adjusted me a miracle happened, no more headaches and no more painkillers. Thank you for exposing me to the wonderful world of Chiropractic, I couldn’t imagine my life without it. (R. Sastre) I am honored to have helped so many people with their health care problems but I cannot really take credit. My confession is that I have never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! It is very challenging to be a chiropractor today. There are many so-called experts out there with extreme misinformation, much of which is ridiculous. But the studies speak for themselves, like the Virginia, USA study that showed over 95% of people who saw a chiropractor were satisfied with their results. That is outstanding! Studies show that chiropractic may double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immunes system fights colds, the flu and other sicknesses. The results? You may not be sick in bed as much. This is

especially important when you are self-employed. Benefit from an Amazing Offer Would you like to see if chiropractic is the solution to your health problems? Would you like to see for yourself it it’s as easy and as effective as I say it is? Sure you would! And now here’s the best part. When you bring in this article by this Friday you will receive my entire new client exam and report for only 35 euro. That includes a postural analysis, a spinal thermo graphic and sEMG scans and a detailed report of your findings. Everything! How can such an offer be made? The answer is simple. I know that chiropractic works so well I am willing to take most of the risk. I hope that you accept my offer. Let’s discover if chiropractic can help you. You cannot lose – but you sure can win! Be happy to know that I have affordable individual or family plans. Not only great fees….but great care! I am very confident in my ability to provide you great care. I have studied many years with a group of elite chiropractors that have spent years and thousands of euros to remain on the cutting edge of or practice, technology, research and strategies. Jeremy Clarkson branded a racist after remark on Top Gear programme

The BBC is facing demands by Equal Justice, a firm that specialises in race discrimination cases, that it conducts a formal investigation after presenter Jeremy Clarkson allegedly used a racist term to describe an Asian person during an episode of Top Gear. Actress Somi Guha, 36, has instructed her lawyers after Clarkson used the word “slope” – a derogatory term for people of Asian descent during an episode filmed in Burma. During the show, presenters Richard Hammond, James May and Clarkson were tasked with constructing a bridge over the River Kwai in Thailand. After completing the task, Clarkson, 53, said: “That is a proud moment, but there’s a slope on it,” as a man walked towards him on the makeshift bridge, to which Hammond replied: “You’re right, it’s definitely higher on that side.” Equal Justice, who are representing Miss Guha, said: “The BBC is obliged to do a full investigation. If they find that the show

sells itself on racism, then they should decommission it.” In her complaint, Ms Guha, who has appeared in the film Children of Men, said: ‘Casual racism in the media by established BBC stalwarts is constantly brushed aside. Discrimination within the industry is accepted. Racial profiling of roles is accepted and expected. I find it offensive that Jeremy Clarkson refers to people of different races in pejorative terms.’ In a letter to BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten, Equal Justice said Clarkson’s comments are “clear gross misconduct on his part and would be considered as such in any modern British workplace”. “Please process this complaint as a matter of urgency and give due consideration to not recommissioning Top Gear for another series until these matters are addressed.” Top Gear has declined to comment on the allegations so far.

A fire which started last Tuesday night was still burning in places on Friday, Reports Martin Shortland. It’s still unknown how the blaze began, but it soon took hold across a large part of the Sierra Gador and it’s estimated to have destroyed 4,5000 hectares of shrubs and pines. No property has been damaged although many outlying farms came close to being engulfed by the flames. The strong winds pushed the fire quickly across the ground and made the fire fighters jobs very hazardous. On Wednesday, elderly members of the population were evacuated from the village of Enix in case the fire spread into the town; at one stage it came as close as 100 metres from the edge of the village. A fire spokesman said they advised the police and ambulance services to start a slow evacuation of older people, just as a precaution. They were returned to their homes later in the day, when the fire changed direction towards Gador and Almeria. At one stage the hamlet of Al Marchal was under serious threat and council and civic protection workers provided transport for people trying to get away from the flames. Because of the high winds, the fire fighting aircraft could not take to the air, although they were deployed later on Wednesday. The two heavy transport helicopters and two aeroplanes carried thousands of tons of water from the bay of Almeria to the seat of the fire for most of the day. They were still on stand-by on Friday in case of further outbreaks. Two hundred fire fighters from the Almeria service were involved in the operation and they were assisted by 250 firemen from neighbouring forces. Fifty members of the technical services and environment agency were also involved and some 100 police, ambulance and civil protection personnel were reported at the scene. There have been no reports of any injuries to the public, but a number of firemen have been treated for the effects of smoke inhalation. By last

weekend, the fire was reported to be 99% under control and the majority of the fire service force had returned to their bases. In the aftermath of the fire which swept across large areas of the Sierra de Gador last week, many of the worst affected communities are beginning to count the cost of the damage. Although thankfully there were no deaths, few injuries and little damage to property; the fire destroyed thousands of hectares of environmentally important woodland and heath. During a visit to one of the worst affected areas, The Mayor of Alhama de Almeria said on Saturday, “It hurts us to see what was formerly the green lung of the municipality reduced to this; everything is black, it’s all gone.” Much of the pine forest engulfed in the fire was eighty years old and provided a vital habitat for wildlife. It was a popular site for naturalists and bird watchers and brought many visitors to the town. One of the oldest residents recalled how, as a boy, he helped his father plant the hundreds of young saplings which covered a hillside on the approach to the town. He described how he used two donkeys to carry thousands of gallons of water up the hill, taken from the old well in the centre of the village. He said, “I’m heartbroken when I look at what has happened. It was so beautiful and now it’s all gone.” The investigation into how the fire started is still ongoing and a fire department spokesman said at the weekend that because the fire covered such a vast area, they were still trying to pinpoint where it started, he said, “Once we establish where the fire began, we can then begin to investigate the possible cause; at the moment it’s proving to be a very difficult task.” AT THE TIME OF GOING TO PRESS: The Almeria Fire Department says it’s most likely a faulty electricity cable caused the blaze.

Poisoned Bait Forces Closure Of Local Hunting Ground

Report by Martin Shortland

A large area of land has been closed to walkers and hunters after poisoned bait was discovered there. Inspectors from the Ministry of Agriculture in Almeria were called to the area close to Zurgena and Arboleas – after the body of a dead fox was found to contain poison. Ministry vets carried out a postmortem and found the animal had eaten bait containing the highly toxic pesticide (carbofuran), which is very dangerous to humans. If allowed to get into the food chain it can cause serious health problems and in serious cases, even death. Wild boar, deer and rabbits are found in the area, hence its popularity with hunters and it is for this reason it has been closed. A team of inspectors will spend up to two weeks searching for further evidence of the poison and they will be assisted by a canine team

of 14 dogs, especially trained to sniff out dangerous pesticides. Jose Manuel Ortiz from the Ministry of Agriculture explained the situation, he said, “We are treating this latest case of poisoning very seriously, because it poses a real threat to anyone who is exposed to it. Dozens of people hunt for game on this land and our fear is that any animal containing the poison could be killed and consumed by humans.” He went on to say they have to do everything possible to protect people, but because of the large area concerned, it will be a problem restricting access to the general public. The use of poisons such as this one has been widespread for many years in Spain and the national government follows close guidelines set out by the World Wildlife Foundation to try to eradicate the use of all poisons.

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES from your pool is not being properly circulated or filtered. Running the pump and circulating the water is the best way to help prevent problems.

The Filtration System

The job of the filtration system is to remove any undissolved dirt and debris from the pool water. While the skimmer basket and the hair and lint basket in the pump all play a role in the filtering of the pool water, the primary element of the system is the filter itself. If you backwash sand or DE filters too often, the filter cannot reach its cleaning potential and you are wasting water. Most filters require backwashing when the pressure gauge rises 8-10 psi from clean. Consult your pool professional to understand the role that the skimmer and pump basket play in keeping your pool clean.

it back to the pool.

To keep your pool’s water sparkling clean, a few basic maintenance steps are required. Find information on the usage of products, care and how to test your water for easy pool maintenance in this section.

Circulation The Role of the Pump

The center of the circulation system is the pump. It moves water from the pool and sends it through the filter for removal of any dust, dirt and debris prior to sending

How long should you run your pump? Piping size, pool size, swimmer load and the actual pump size all play a role in determining how long you should run your pump. For the proper time consult your pool professional. They can determine, based upon your specific pool, the proper amount of time required to keep your pool clear and clean. A good rule of thumb is to run your pump about 1 hour for every 10º of temperature. If your pump is not running, the water

1. Sand 2. Cartridge 3. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) • Sand Filters - Dirt is removed from a sand filter by “backwashing” or reversing the water flow. The filter should be backwashed when the pressure gauge indicates a 7-10 lbs. increase over normal operating pressure. This is the pressure indicated on the pressure gauge when the filter is completely clean. Sand filters are more efficient when they are slightly

dirty; consequently they should only be backwashed when required by the increase in pressure. Sand filters should be cleaned at least every season with a filter cleaner. • Cartridge Filters - Dirt needs to be removed from a cartridge filter when the pressure gauge indicates an increase of 7-10 lbs. over normal operation pressure. Remove the cartridge(s) from the filter and hose off all loose dirt and debris. Then soak the element(s) in filter cleaner for at least 12 hours. This will remove all oils and greases imbedded in the filter element. After soaking, remove the cartridge(s) and rinse thoroughly with fresh water. Peak filter efficiency is achieved if you allow the filter element(s) to dry prior to reinstalling in the filter. To avoid any “down time” for the circulation or filtration systems, it is advisable to purchase a second set of cartridge elements so they may be interchanged on a regular basis with the first set. • Diatomaceous Earth Filters - Like sand, the DE filter is cleaned by backwashing the filter when pressure increases 7-10 lbs. However, once the filter has been backwashed, new DE must be added to coat the grids in the filter. This is accomplished by pouring DE through the skimmer. To cut oils and other natural oil build-up, DE filter grids should be cleaned at least once every season using filter cleaner. Also, at least once a year the entire DE filter should be disassembled and cleaned thoroughly as well as being inspected for tears or rips in the grids.

beauty without surgery with Dr. Helena Benson Helena Benson qualified as a medical doctor at the First Medical Academy in Moscow in 1986. In 1989 Helena came to England. During the 1990’s she worked at Harley Street and from her clinic in North London. She has been practicing natural herbs, iridology and nutrition. In the late 90’s she became involved in medical aesthetics, and now treats patients across the United Kingdom, Ireland and Spain. Helena is the founder of the London School of Permanent Make-up, one of the leading schools in the UK Dr Benson specializes in aesthetic medicine and facial rejuvenation, not requiring cosmetic surgery, or so called ‘lunchtime cosmetics’. Treatments for wrinkles and skin peels can become part of your grooming routine, like going to the hairdresser, doing your nails or even buying new clothes. The best modern cosmetics come in syringes, not jars! Improving your skin or fixing the line may not necessarily fix your life. But wouldn’t it be nice to get back what you thought you might have lost forever? If you can look good and feel great about it, then why not do it? A desire to improve your appearance is not about vanity. It’s about confidence and your self-esteem. And as Oscar Wilde said “It is only shallow people who don’t judge by first impressions”. ...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

SOLTIMES april 2014

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today, I would like to start with an anecdote. My Systems Design Professor at Huddersfield University gave the throng of ‘would-be’ computer genii, a piece of advice when starting to prepare a 10,000 dissertation. “Like a story, It has to have a start, middle and ending. The ending should bring a conclusion to your arguments; The middle section are your arguments and the beginning, being the most important, you have to ask the questions that your will discuss and give your conclusions on”. I wrote it down (sad)! So here is the beginning! Last week, I touched on the subject of ‘torrents’ as part of my raving about “big brother” and little england. Today, I would like to touch on torrents a little more. What is a torrent? How does it work? Why are the biggest of corporations so scared of it? What is a torrent? It can be thought of as a clever method of allowing a file, or group of files, to be downloaded quickly. “So what!” you might say. What if you and 30 other people are downloading a file at exactly the same! In the time it takes you alone to download this program, all 30 people could have downloaded it! This then expands the possibility of sending to many people efficiently (shame royal mail doesn’t work this way :-) ). How does it work? Time for an analogy. You have 4 magic blocks and 4 friends (Joe, James, Jane and Joanne). These block magically double the moment someone wants one, that way, you always have one and your friend gets one. Joe, James, Jane and Joanne ask for blocks 1,2,3 and 4 respectively.

You send block 1 to Joe (he asked first), then block 2 to James and so on with Jane and Joanne. Now Joe has block 1, James – block 2, Jane – block 3 and Joanne – block 4. You can now stop uploading! Joe will send block 1 to James, Jane and Joanne in turn while getting block 2, 3 and 4 from the others. After a short while, everyone has a complete copy of files that you wanted to send. This, obviously, has been simplified a little to help everyone understand. For a short video on torrents and how they work go to: http://player.vimeo.com/ video/15228767 And watch the video. You might be surprised just how simple it really is :-) Why are huge, multinational corporations so afraid of this simple technology? One word – MONEY. They stand to loose massive amounts of profits and decades of uncontrolled rapaciousness motivates them into manipulating anyone / thing that gets between them and profit! Microsoft and its corporate machine, the music and film industries have, after trying to copy-protect their products and being forced by the world courts to remove these protections, used the legal systems to prevent you and I sharing anything, legal or otherwise. Thankfully, the way in which torrent works, we can continue to share, with one another, freely, whatever we choose to share. I believe that torrents will be around for a long time to come or someone forces the courts to upturn their decision in favour of a fairer one. Start (questions), Middle (arguments), Ending (done). See you all at Jack’s bar on Fridays between 12 and 4 for the computer clinic. If you need me sooner, call the number below. Advice is always free :-)

For further information or advice on computing, contact Trevor on 689 892 745 or canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk

Salad Days

It’s a Leo thing apparently; the trait I have of leaving some things to the last possible minute. At school even with all the holidays to do my homework, it would still be done Sunday night before term started again. At secondary school even though it was a 9am start we weren’t officially late until registration finished at 0925. I guess the leeway was in place in case a school bus ever arrived late. Being the only Catholic school for miles around 90% of the students were coached in from across Surrey. For those that walked to school the system could be played, sometimes I would crawl out of bed at the last possible moment, walk the 15 minutes to school and be there for what I reasoned was ‘in good time’ which was about 0923. The school had the grand title of Saint Peters and Merrow Grange RC Comprehensive, so named as it was 2 schools separated by a 200 yard walk down a quiet lane. Until 1971 the upper school had been a convent school for girls (Merrow Grange) and the lower school a boy’s school (St. Peters). There were extralong breaks between classes as we often had to walk between the two buildings. Merrow Grange was a mock Tudor manor house with a grand wooden staircase and floors

LÍNEA DIRECTA ADVISES YOU HOW TO ACT IN CASE OF AN ACCIDENT

Línea Directa Insurance advises you of the steps to follow in case of a road accident in Spain. 1. Call the emergency number: 112. They will co-ordinate the procedure and will ask you in detail about the circumstances of the accident. 2. Remain calm at all times. Switch on the emergency lights and if the state of the vehicle permits, remove the vehicle from the road, in order to avoid delays and further accidents, to the extent possible. 3. Signal the accident location. Before stepping out of the car, put on your high-visibility jacket, which is compulsory, and place the emergency triangles correctly. The first must be placed about 50 metres behind the car in the direction of the traffic, and the second about 100m. 4. If someone is seriously injured, never try to move them, except if in danger of fire or imminent explosion. Cover the injured person, keep them calm and wait for the emergency services to arrive. 5. If the circumstances of the location allow, always fill in the European accident report, which is an essential document for speeding up the procedures and handling between the insurance companies. If you have any doubt about how to do this, don’t hesitate to call your insurance company.

that creaked beautifully when trodden on. The school had a good reputation for music and the music teacher Mr Carter had the grandest room of all. It was big enough to use as a recital room, with a vaulted ceiling, balcony and huge leaded bay windows. He must have loved coming to work; I certainly did as he was my form tutor for two years. Students were banned from climbing the tiny circular staircase to the balcony, but if left unsupervised momentarily, we boys would take our chances. The stairs lead further up to the mythical attic where we supposedly would have been expelled if ever caught there. Sadly it was padlocked and I never got in. The Grange also housed a convent with ancient nuns within. As newbies aged 11 and 12 the older boys as a rite of passage scared us with the legend of a ghostly Blue Nun that wandered the attic rooms at night carrying a light. In hindsight ‘Blue Nun’ was also the brand name of a popular wine but we fell for it. Merrow Grange was built in 1868 and one owner was a keen botanist planting Sequoia/ Giant Redwoods and other exotics throughout the then 45 acres gardens. The gardens were landscaped with Pulhamite an artificial stone.

Sunken paths, ponds and artificial hills were created which are now all overgrown. The most interesting part was nicknamed ‘the caves’, again we were strictly forbidden to enter. It’s actually a Grade II listed grotto with a sunken fernery covered by an iron work glazed roof. A winding staircase leads down to a dark tunnel with only one way in/out. When the Pulhamite was mixed 100 years ago something alike to glitter was added and by candle or torchlight the walls shimmer magically. We would jump the school fence at weekends to explore the overgrown gardens and caves, night time made it more adventurous. Once my mate John Fergus went and hid in the tunnel. We searched for him but gave up; we had almost reached the exit when the sod terrified us by screaming ghoulishly from behind us with a torch held under his chin making his face glow red. John had discovered a tiny cave in the roof of the tunnel and had hidden up there whilst we passed underneath. Then Gollum like he clambered down to scare the living daylights out of us – happy days!

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Q. Please explain the situations in which a resident qualifies for non-payment of capital gains tax.

A . The first thing is to be able to prove to the notary the day of the sale that you are in fact a Spanish tax resident. It is very important to realize that having what everyone calls the “residencia” issued by the police does not in fact prove you are a tax resident of Spain, and that if this is the only document you take to the notary to prove tax residency , the notary will consider you a non resident and you will be subject to a 3% retention. To prove you are a tax resident your solicitor needs to request a certificate from the tax authorities, which can then be taken to the notary. If you suffer the nasty surprise of them saying that in fact you are a non resident, you will need to get this amended by proving to them that you are in fact a resident before they will issue you with the correct certificate for the notary. The best way to secure tax residency status is making a resident income tax declaration in Spain in June of every year. If you are going to sell shortly,

1. The possible total or partial exemption from capital gains tax due to reinvestment (roll-over): If you are a resident and sell one property to purchase another of the same or higher price you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax. To benefit you have to have been a resident for at least 3 year before the sale takes place, and you must purchase the next property within 2 years of the sale. If you are moving to a smaller property, you can claim exemption of a percentage of the capital gains tax. 2. Claim of total exemption if you are over 65 years old: If you are over 65 and sell your main home (where you must have lived for at least 3 years as a resident), you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax even if you do not reinvest. If the property is owned by a couple and one member is over 65 and the other is not, you are allowed to claim the exemption in respect to half the price. Michael Davies. Abogado.

Michael Davies is a Spanish Abogado and has been practicing law in Andalucia since 1993. He is member of the Law societies of Almería and Madrid. For a short period of time leading up to 2007 he was also Honorary British Consul.

Very busy week for data, will sterling benefit?

The first week of any month is usually a busy one for data and this week, being the first week of April, is no different. It usually brings with it increased currency movements as we see how different economies are performing and with a number of key data releases this week we could well see some significant currency movements. Even though last week ended with a surprise increase in the UK current account deficit to £22.4 billion, sterling managed to finish the week relatively strongly. This week the key UK data are the March purchasing managers’ indices (PMI) for manufacturing,

construction and the service industries which are released throughout the week, providing indications of UK output and, by association, of economic growth. Of these, the services PMI is likely to be the most influential as it makes up a large portion of the UK economy. Construction and Services are expected to show increasing expansion whereas manufacturing is expected to show a pull back from last month’s better than expected figures. Elsewhere, labour data out of the US towards the end of the week could have an influential effect on price of the US dollar against sterling. Source: www.smartcurrencynews.com

Key data could force the ECB’s hand on interest rates

A busy week for Eurozone data starting today with the release of the “flash” inflation figure for March which is expected to show a fall to 0.6%. This will obviously be of concern to the European Central Bank (ECB). Tomorrow we will see the release of the Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) and unemployment data for the Eurozone. These are then followed on Wednesday by the Services Purchasing Managers’

Legal Matters

Help for Expats in Spain

Index and retail sales figures.. The big event of the week is likely to be the interest decision published by the European Central Bank (ECB) on Thursday. Although worries about possible deflation and the speed of the recovery in certain Eurozone countries, any change by the ECB on Thursday is considered unlikely. So any different outcome will have a significant effect on the euro.

Rental contract In Spain, it is normal to give one to three-months notice of intention to vacate. The notice letter should be sent by registered post. An inventory of the property will be made before a landlord will agree to return a deposit. Property sales Estate agents in Spain handle most property sales although it is possible to sell a property privately. Signing of the final deed of sale is considered the legal completion of a sale. Anyone who cannot attend the event in person may give power of attorney to a third party to sign on their behalf. Properties purchased with a mortgage will have had life insurance in place which may not be cancelled until the sale is completed. Insurance House insurance can be cancelled once a sale is completed. Utility bills (Electricity, Water, Gas, Telephone, Internet) As with any house move, there are utility bills to be settled and meters to be read. If meters are not outside the property, access will be required. Utility bills in Spain are commonly paid by direct debit so these will need to be cancelled once final payment has been made. Leave a forwarding address with all the companies involved. Health Care Anyone who has received medical treatment while in Spain should have their records forwarded to their new practitioner or ask for a copy.

Leaving Spain and Moving On

So you have decided to move on? Here are a few things to remember:

17

Banking A Spanish bank account should be kept open for a short period to settle final bills. Make sure that the direct debits have been cancelled once final payments of the bills have been made. Cancel your credit cards. Tax Be aware that under some circumstances the proceeds of property sales will be subject to Spanish capital gains tax. Income Tax To ensure that each individual understands their own obligations with regard to tax liability on departure from Spain it would be wise to seek professional advice. Education Give schools a reasonable amount of notice of a child’s departure. There may be outstanding bills for school fees, transport or meals to be settled. Request from the school a certificate stating the latest grade passed by the child when giving notice of departure. Leave a forwarding address for any correspondence. Correspondence A redirection service is offered by the Spanish post office (Correos). Animals The EU pet passport covers dogs and cats for movement within Europe and the Pets Travel Scheme (PETS) allows qualifying domestic pets to travel to and from the UK without a period of quarantine. Local vets can provide information and documentation.

Mojácar was flourishing city well into the eighteenth century, in the military, civil and ecclesiastical. The population reached estimated at 10,000 people. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century began the decline of the city. Severe droughts that deplete the agricultural people are the reason for the exodus to South America and then to Catalonia and Europe.

Foreigners Driving Spain’s Property Turnaround

Foreigners are helping the Spanish property market get back on its feet and last year recorded their largest percentage of the overall sales in the country on record, according to new data from Spain’s General Council of Notaries.

Guides Company. “Unsurprisingly, the Valencian Community, home to the Costa Blanca remains a hot spot, attracting a 17 per cent year-on-year increase in transactions, followed by the Canaries and Andalusia, home to the Costa del Sol.

“The total number of property purchases by non-Spaniards rose by 9.8 per cent in 2013, accounting for 21.4 per cent of the whole market” said Richard Way, Editor at The Overseas

“Reports of increasing interest in Spain from institutional investors, including in commercial property, signify that confidence in the market is back and with Spain expecting a bumper summer

in terms of tourism, things are generally looking rosy. “The A Place in the Sun Live exhibition in London at the weekend will be a good barometer for how interested Brits are in Spanish property - and where visitors will be able to explore a realistic selection of what deals are available right now ” concluded Mr Way.

Do you find that some things just disappear without you realising it? I don’t necessarily mean the bar of chocolate that you knew was definitely in the fridge when you looked the day before. No, I was thinking of more weighty matters. When, for example, was the last time you had an actual letter? You know, through the post and with a stamp on it? I’m not talking about those nice electricity bills or income tax demands, but rather letters from friends and relatives. We just don’t seem to get them anymore, instead we get emails, or texts-sorry I should say txts-saying things like...”Soz, 4 gt prty lst nite. Thx”. Incomprehensible, unless you’re 18 and under! While I was thinking about not getting letters anymore, something else dawned on me. Bus Conductors, when did they disappear? People talk about multi tasking being a skill well, consider Bus Conductors. He or she could produce your ticket from a wondrous machine, calculate your change-sometimes it was even right- while balancing perfectly as the driver flew round bends like Lewis Hamilton after too many Smarties! And all this time they’d be whistling continually! Just to go off at a tangent for a second, this gives me an idea for a new game show-Celebrity Clippie! A host of incredibly well known celebrities-okay, ex soap stars, former newsreaders and the odd recovering addict- compete for the title Super Celebrity Clippie, while the bus hurtles around a skid pan. The winner would be the one with the fewest fractures. All of these musings are because of a recent visit to the cinema. It hasn’t half changed and I don’t just mean the seats, which aren’t made of a yucky red valour anymore. The whole experience is different...better, but different. Although on the negative side, all the Usherettes seem to have disappeared. I always looked forward to the interval-they seem to have gone too- when the Usherette came Graham is married round with that tray dangling from a belt around to Helen and has a her neck selling Kia Ora and Mivvis. Seriously Mum What’s an Alpaca? by Alan Parks. “A landscape full of mountainside and valleys, punctuated by pine trees, while in the distance the sea glistening in the sunlight. It seemed so idyllic and perfect. What could be better than a life in the sun with these beautiful animals as companions?” This memoir, the first of two must be about falling in love with a dream that eventually reaches fruition after a lot of hard work and agonising moments. Seriously Mum, What’s A Donkey? is the sequel to this Spanish adventure. Alan Parks was encouraged to write about this new venture-breeding alpacas in Spain, quite a big upheaval from life in the UK to a remote part of Andalucia, the frying pan of Spain because of the summer heat, without the mod-cons that we so depend upon! On the bright side it seemed like a vision of utopia but in reality nerves were often shot to pieces, paranoia set in along with plenty of setbacks and heartaches. The memoir is a frank account of two people who were tempted to abandon a safe but tedious life for a challenging adventure. Alan believed that breeding alpacas could be a profitable business. They were tempted by thoughts of a fantastic lifestyle as well as making pots of money! The animals were bewitching and naturally they fell in

love with them. “If you deal with livestock you have to deal with dead stock too.” Such a sobering thought when you want to breed animals. Alan and partner, Lorna had to contend with aborted cria and dispose of the dead babies. They came to realise that sometimes sick animals don’t make it and this is the gritty reality if you live the dream you have to deal with the nightmare too. The Olive Mill near Montoro was ideal for their needs, in a remote area but with plenty of character and potential. Mary-Belle, the pot-bellied pig came with the house, so to speak and before long there was a motley collection of domesticated as well as feral animals and birds. They acquired 2 Mastin Espanol whose ears had been chopped off and tails wired and a number of chickens. Beyonce and JLo were so named because of their constant bum wiggling. Basil (Fawlty) was the name bestowed on the first cria born that survived. Breeding alpacas in Spain was seen as a pioneering enterprise, innovative and they felt immensely proud. With the arrival of their first 3 alpacas they became instantaneous celebrities with the locals. They tolerated scams and cons with car buying and roof repairs caught out

through their own vulnerability and naivety. It happens. The alpacas were usually friendly but were overly protective of their young and would spit a green bile from the pits of their stomachs, referred to as the most putrid gunk imaginable. “ She really must have dredged up every last bit of it from the pit of all of her stomach. It was enough to make me retch.” Lorna refers to this incident when Alan was gunged Noel Edmond’s style by Bermuda who had a wicked reputation. DIY farming and plumbing as well as administering medication to sick animals, even sleeping in the barn with the animals seem to be prerequisites. And with solar energy, if the sun doesn’t shine for weeks at a time then what happens? Not a lot. No electricity. Water from a well sounds wonderful until the well blocks. What about the rain that turns a stream into a fast flowing river and the leaking roof? Sounds exciting. All part of the fun. There were plenty of regrets but they learnt a lot about themselves before starting to appreciate this crazy country

of Spain and feel stronger and better people. There is humour and warmth as well as sadness and regrets. Publisher: Ant Press. ISBN: 978-148201-1609 Also available on ereader. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor.

Needless to say, there are ‘Ruta de Tapas’ societies who spend the fortnight visiting every bar and savouring every tapas, which sounds like a lot of fun! A panel of judges visits the bars and awards prizes for presentation, harmony of flavours and creativity. Customers can also get involved in the judging as well. Each participating establishment will have a form for clients to fill in and they can win a selection of prizes from free drinks, weekend holiday breaks, restaurant and cinema tickets. Customers will also be asked to vote on the level of service they receive and the bar with the most votes will be presented with a special trophy. And for the first time, voting can be done via facebook and twitter. The winner of the best tapas competition will take part in a Grand Final alongside winners from other towns, to be held in Sevilla in May. The route is divided up into five zones: the city centre with 34 bars, the seafront with 13, the Rambla and Ronda with 12, and the two new zones with 6 bars. Seventy one bars and restaurants throughout the capitol are participating - which is seventeen more than last year - and two more districts have been added. The event runs until 6th April. It’s a true celebration of the tapas along with the conviviality, hospitality and friendliness which surrounds this wholly Spanish tradition; a tradition which is claimed to have started in Andalucia. Lack Of Bees Causes More Problems For Melon Farmers

Report by Martin Shortland Three weeks ago, I reported that this years melon crop was under attack by the new delhi virus, which last year decimated almost 60% of the regions courgette harvest. The virus is spread by white fly and growers, although warned of the possible threat by seed suppliers, went ahead and began planting at the beginning of the year. Around 20% of the early season crop has been affected and some producers, especially around Vicar where the virus is most prevalent, have taken on extra workers to help inspect and destroy infected plants. As if that isn’t enough, another potentially more damaging threat has now come to light - a shortage of bees. Bees are the most essential components for melon and water melon crops – they pollinate the plants – and this year there is a dramatic scarcity of them. Basically it’s a case of no bees, no melons. And the reason being given by bee keepers is the drought. Although a naturally dry region, this part of Spain has experienced even less rainfall in the last two years than is normal and it is the lack of rain and hence the lack of food provided by plants, which has decimated the bee population. Farmers are frantically looking to rent beehives from other parts

of the country to place in their greenhouses, but the situation seems to be widespread, certainly across the southern part of Spain. Many bee keepers are reporting their hives have been stolen and have asked for police surveillance to protect their livelihoods: not an easy task because of the remote locations of many of the hives. It’s too early to predict a crisis, but farmers are certainly having to cope with not one, but two potentially damaging setbacks to their harvest this season. A growers association spokesman told me on Monday they were doing everything possible to maximise the yield, but he said, “We could be looking at losing as much as 50% of the crop – either through non pollination or white fly – and this will undoubtedly be reflected in the prices customers pay for their fruit this year.” I seem to remember there was a glut of melons last year; my local shop was virtually giving them away for many weeks. The same has happened with this seasons mandarin and orange crops, with very high yields and very low prices. The farmers seem fairly sanguine about it though, which is ultimately a reflection of the ‘swings and roundabouts’ nature of the business.

She also needs a team of seamstresses and hat makers - we can make it fun (sewing Bs with coffee and cakes and making gum-strip hats). As very few roles are actually defined, they are a group of Pierrots who take on different characters throughout the show, the committment from you can be large or small, depending on how much rehearsal time you have to give. If you are interested she looks forward to seeing you on 17th or hearing from you. Janet is directing the show and Bill and Janet will be the producers. orange or yellow We possess the standard Spanish wheelbarrow – yellow with green handles and red handgrips, its jolly primary school colours guaranteed to make those mundane garden jobs go with a jaunty step and a merry whistle. Unfortunately this frolicsome picture is spoiled by the wheelbarrow’s Achilles heel – its tyre. The tyre is black, a good counterpoint to the otherwise frenetic colour scheme, but its fatal flaw is that it is pneumatic, thus puncturable. And puncture it did, with increasing regularity. A tyre, once punctured, is never quite the same again, and its predilection for the flat bottom look eventually goaded me into purchasing an unpuncturable tyre in

bright citrus yellow, such as most of our neighbours now own. I went to the Armeria and discovered that there was an option – orange. There on the shelf sat the ubiquitous yellow tyre and next to it sat an equally gaudy, equally solid orange one. I had a choice of 2, which was 1 too many. I umm’d and ahh’d, and settled for the orange one – it was slightly cheaper and it had a metal hub, which I reckoned would deteriorate at a slower rate than the plastic hub of the yellow wheel, plus the added bonus that it would identify my barrow from the herd of yellow wheeled barrows that abound on our estate. Having checked that it was impinchable, a new word taught to me by the young man at the counter, I bore my unique purchase home, proud to be the possessor of the only wheelbarrow in Limaria with an orange wheel. I upended the wheelbarrow on the garden table, so that we josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk could get at it, and with

much sweat, searching for the right size spanner and chasing after dropped nuts Pete and I managed to disconnect the old wheel and connect the new d e f y- a ll - s ha r p - objec t s means of wheelbarrow propulsion to the frame. It was at this point that I discovered why everybody else had gone for the yellow option – the orange wheel is fractionally larger, just large enough to bear on the frame and make the barrow unpushable. I took the wheel back and changed it, coughed up the 4€ extra, fitted the yellow wheel, and can now gaily traverse rock and stone, shale and flint with never a moment’s concern for the rotundity of my wheelbarrow wheel! But had I been satisfied with common knowledge and less penny wise pound foolish, I could have saved myself an extra trip over the mountain – it never crossed my innocent mind that the tyre might not fit!

alqueria The Submersible John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Alqueria’s frontier was again under threat. The Spanish authorities were once more making nuisances of themselves at the border crossings. They had been instructed to make life as difficult as possible for the people of Alqueria. It was all to do with the latest Alquerian rise in the wholesale price of Remitroot or perhaps they had just got into the habit after their Gibraltar experiences. However Alqueria still needed to get its precious Remitroot products to the outside world and into the market place. The solution was obvious, well obvious to the befuddled folk of Alqueria. They would build a submarine to transport Remitroot down the Río Verde and to the open sea. Construction didn’t present too much of a problem, two of iron septic tanks welded together formed the hull. An old washing-machine motor driven via the inverted power of a couple of tractor batteries turned a makeshift propeller. The periscope consisted of a webcam fitted into the rear of a rather convincing imitation Tufted Duck. This meant the duck travelled backwards and its rear end emitted the glow from a red flashing LED but it didn’t seem to raise any awkward questions. The Río Verde was home to some strange creatures. Breathing, which isn’t an optional extra was the next problem. The removal of Alfonso Álvarez from the crew, he virtually lived on chicken vindaloo made the task somewhat easier. A snorkel arrangement was finally contrived, it resembled the smoke stack of Stephenson’s Rocket but fulfilled its function fairly well. The main problem was that of ballast.

The Río Verde is a complex, polluted, slime rich watercourse containing many organisms not known to man. Many of its organisms are so foul that man has no wish to become acquainted with them at all. Its viscosity is greater than that of the thickest motor oil and the stench could turn the stomach of a Port Said sanitary inspector. To keep the craft submerged large concrete blocks had to be suspended from the hull. The blocks were purloined from the town hall in a neighbouring village which spectacularly collapsed two days later. The theory was to release the blocks as the craft entered the Mediterranean. The water would be less buoyant and the craft would float gently to the surface. This was the theory, what happened in practice was another matter however. When the concrete blocks were released the submarine shot up through the water like a ballistic missile and then some three metres into the air. A passing giant squid of the male gender took it to be a frisky female and acted accordingly. We will never know the full trauma of this encounter only that the crew never ate calamari again. Manuela alone was unscathed and seemed to enjoy the experience she immediately volunteered for the next trip.

viewpoint

Suspect Soapy Stories I have a friend – no really I do – who has a pet hate regarding a certain recurring detail in television soaps. It’s an aversion that borders on hysteria at times and as a talented actress herself, she gets the screaming meemies every time she has to witness yet another scene featuring what she sees as an unprofessional gaffe. So what could it possibly be that has her climbing the walls in abject disgust? I’ll tell you. It’s when actors are supposedly indulging in a nice cup of Rosie Lee or coffee, and it becomes blatantly obvious that there is absolutely nothing in the damn cup, leaving the actors to swallow the non-existent beverage with a phony wobble of the Adams apple and an equally counterfeit smacking of the lips. And I agree with her. No expense seems to be spared in the production of these programmes – elaborate sets and whole streets built, with actors being paid staggering salaries – and yet they can’t be bothered to actually fill a mug with genuine Sainsbury’s Red Label. I also have issues with some of the story lines which can range from highly unlikely scenarios to the ‘You have got to be having a laugh!’ efforts. In my expert opinion, Emmerdale is the biggest offender here, although I have to hold my hands up and say that this soap along with Corrie, are the only two such programmes I watch. The former

because it happens to be on when I am preparing yet another gastronomic delight for my lovely lady, and the latter because frankly I like it. So there. My only excuse is that I am of a certain age and drive a Peugeot. Emmerdale has a strange team of writers, because the story lines range from the absolutely brilliant – although these are in the small minority - to manifestly, incontrovertibly and totally bonkers. They are certainly not keen observers of people behaviour or human nature, because I am constantly yelling at the screen things like: “Don’t be stupid – nobody would do/say that! Or: ‘Go on, hit the beggar, he’s asked for it!’ And when a half respectable plot does show its face, it is milked to within an inch of its life until everyone is bored totally senseless with the whole thing. Story lines that begin at Easter can still be running the following spring – like one of those London Marathon runners who wears a suit of real armour or goes dressed as an aircraft carrier, and who is still trudging painfully along when everyone else has gone home or sloped off to the pub. But just as my friend has her personal bugbear with the phantom tea, I have one with folded arms. That’s right . . . just check out how many times and in how many scenes, female characters automatically fold their arms when having a conversation with someone. It’s as if they not sure what to do with their hands and so they play safe and adopt this boring posture. Yes it’s a fairly common girlie pose, but not the twenty odd times we see in each episode. ‘Where’s the director?’ I shout in exasperation. ‘Why aren’t you telling her to move her upper

body and show a bit of life you imbecile!’ This would not be tolerated in theatre I can tell you. Then you have the actors who are supposed to be skilled tradesmen or professionals but who have obviously never been given even the scantiest of instruction on how to come across as genuine and who handle a spanner like it is a Curly Wurly or the controller at the taxi company who has the telephone manner of a cabbage. I tell you, any mini cab company that receives the number of calls that Street Cars gets – about one booking every two episodes – would have been up the swanee years ago. It’s a joke. And don’t get me started about those machinists at Underworld! Why aren’t the actors concerned given a day out from rehearsals to show them a real working garage or a busy taxi cab office or made to work in a bustling restaurant for a couple of evenings. And this is where my own dear lady’s pet hate comes in. As a professional hairdresser all of her life, she is either laughing insanely or banging the coffee table in frustration at the antics with brushes and hair dryers by the so called stylists at Audrey’s Salon in the Street. On such a high profile soap, why the hell haven’t these actors been given a couple of days coaching on the basics of hairdressing and at least shown how to shampoo properly or which way up to hold a comb. But hey, guess what we’ll be doing again this week.

Cabaret in Aguilas raises over €5000 for MACS Cancer Support Group

The cabaret on March 21st at the Aguilas Resort hotel in aid of MACS Cancer support group was a huge success with more than €5000 being raised on the evening. The show was fantastic with Suzy G a stunning entertainment act with 5 costume changes. Dee (recently starred at the Benidorm Palace) was sensational and people danced into the early hours with the brilliant CAS Band with a guest appearance from the ever popular Martin Ross.

Anne Blandford, Deborah Burrows and Delcye Boyce Stubbing having their head shaved live on stage in a bid to show solidarity to those diagnosed with cancer, because some of the treatments and side effects can be very distressing and one of the most upsetting things can be hair loss. Between the 3 ladies more than €2000 in sponsorship was raised which contributed to the amazing amount of money presented to MACS.

THE HILTONS CATTERY

Cats need: To reach everything they require (e.g. bed, water, litter or outdoors) without passing things or other animals that may scare them. Constant access to safe hiding places where they can escape if they feel afraid. Scared cats that cannot escape and hide may become aggressive. Opportunities to exercise daily to stay fit and healthy. Cats sleep for many hours, but when awake are active and need opportunities to exercise. - Cats naturally spend much time ranging and hunting for food within their home territory. - If they don’t go outside, provide suitable indoor activities to keep them active. - Read more about keeping cats indoors. Safe toys and regular opportunities to play alone and with friendly people. Cats are playful and many enjoy playing with toys and people. Play can be a fun way for your cat to be active. Interest at meal times - hide dried food or use puzzle

feeders. Sturdy scratching posts which are tall enough for your cat to use fully stretched, especially if they don’t go outdoors. Cats naturally use objects to scratch, mark territory, strengthen muscles and sharpen their claws. You to be vigilant. Cat’s behaviour depends upon age, personality and past experiences. If their behaviour changes, they could be distressed, bored, ill or injured, stressed or afraid. - Signs a cat may be suffering from stress/fear can include high levels of grooming, hiding, sleeping hunched or altered feeding/toileting habits as well as spraying indoors. - Cats that are frightened/in pain may change their behaviour or develop unwanted habits e.g. aggression, spraying indoors, disappearing or avoiding people. - If your cat’s behaviour becomes an ongoing problem, speak to a vet or clinical animal behaviourist.

Kindness! Never shout at or punish your cat, they are very unlikely to understand and can become more nervous or scared. Source: http://www.rspca.org.uk

Thursday 27th March found four teams of eager golfers at Aguilon to play this Best Two from Four Stableford competition. With this format everyone in the team can contribute depending on how they play on the day. The winning team, ably nursed by Nick Pogson, consisting of Harry Ells, Ron (The Rocket) Curtis and Ron·s son in law Graham Newton had a

On the 15th March Urcal Golf Society contested the Challenge Cup at Augilon. A couple of old friends from the UK were here to boost the numbers, last years Captain Tony Hinds was one and Mick Smith a long time member was also in the field, it was lovely to see them both again, looking well but very pale after all the rain the UK has had to put up with recently. Considering the ideal weather for golf the Stableford scores were poor except for our winner Stan Whitty who came in with a magnificent score of 40 points. All aspects of his card were scrutanized in a vain bid to disqualify him but none could be found, his first win of the year was a long way in front of second placed Billy Handy on count back from the current Captain Steve Dodd both with a score of 31points. Nearest the pin on the par three tenth

hole was Judy Brooks, lovely to see one of our ladies triumph over the men. Nearest the pin in two on the seventh hole was Steve Fear who seems to be making a habit of winning one of the nearest the pin prizes or longest drive awards. This time however the longest Drive prize went to last years Captain Tony Hinds who also won the sweepstake, good job we only see him occasionally! Our thanks to Aguilon who once again made us really welcome, and we look forward to our next visit there in the future. Our next fixture is at Marina on the 29th March, guests are really made to feel welcome and anyone who would like to play with our small but friendly society should contact our captain Steve Dodd on 608 238 827
