local News

New Spanish Traffic Laws A Fun Day Out Came in to Effect on 9 May 2014 by drivers caught driving whilst double the drink drive limit or above; or in all cases for reoffending drink drivers; and drivers under the influence of drugs.

4. T he Guardia Civil can seize any vehicle carrying children without legally compliant child seats. 5. T he very specific rules as to where children must sit in the vehicle (according to age/ height) must be observed, otherwise drivers face heavy fines. 6. C yclists under 16 years of age must wear helmets. On the grounds that ‘ignorance of the law is no excuse’, all drivers in Spain are advised immediately to familiarise themselves with the detail of the new traffic laws which are coming into effect on 9 May 2014 (Ley 6/2014 modificando la Ley sobre Tráfico, Circulación de Vehículos a Motor y Seguridad Vial 339/1990); a mere 21 pages! Among the new provisions are the following: 1. S peeding fines apply for exceeding the limit by just 1kph! On some motorways, the speed limit is being increased from 120kph to 130kph, but in many towns, the speed limit is being reduced from 30kph to 20kph. 2. I f the Guardia Civil observe a motoring offence and note the vehicle registration number, this provides sufficient evidence to prosecute- no need for them to stop vehicles. 3. A minimum fine of 1,000 Euros will be payable

7. D rivers have much higher duties to ensure the safety of cyclists of all ages. 8. S peed camera/ radar detectors are prohibited. 9. A n EU Directive is to be implemented so that driving offences committed in one EU country are reported to the EU country of registration of the vehicle in question. 10. M uch stricter rules are being implemented for the Spanish registration of foreign registered vehicles kept in Spain. The above is by no means exhaustive. As can be seen, the new rules are far reaching. Knowledge of the details and observation of the requirements in practice is of fundamental importance. It is clear from the increased powers to prosecute and fine drivers, that the Spanish Authorities ‘mean business’ with these important legal changes. Source: http://legal4spain.com/

For the Children of the Elche Children’s Care Home

Lo Crispin Resident’s Cultural Association are raising funds to take the children and carers from ‘The Children’s Care Home at Elche’ for a fun packed day out in October, to Terra Mitica Theme Park, in Benidorm, complete with lunch and, of course, ice creams. The Residents are holding a Village Fete on Sunday 25th May, from 1.30pm until approximately 7pm. The Fete will consist of a large number of side shows, craft stalls, live entertainment, bouncy castle, BBQ and a fully stocked bar. Also on display will be a number of vintage and prestigious cars, belonging to the members of the Torrevieja Classic and Specialist Car Club. There will be something for everyone to enjoy, as the entertainment programme is extremely varied. Acts booked to appear include the legendary cowboy re-enactment group ‘The Pistoleroes’, along with Red Stokes with his country and western act, Nick Barker, a Blues Brothers Tribute Act, and The Camporverde Reef Band. All will be hosted by our DJ, Martin Dean. The fete will take place on Lo Crispin Urbanisation, which is situated just off the roundabout at junction 845 of the AP7 motorway, close to the Zoco market. Please come along and help us to give the children from the Children’s Care Home at Elche a day to remember.

Lions Club President installs new Honorary member

Janette Bennett, President of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club was delighted to install The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon Sanchez, as an Honorary member of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club at the May business meeting of the Club, held in Hotel Cabo Cervera on Thursday 8th May. In what has been an extremely busy schedule for Janette with various fund raising events being planned and promoted and an even busier schedule for the Mayor, his colleagues and staff with the European Elections now officialy in full swing, both took some time out to induct Eduardo, presenting the Mayor with a certificate of Honorary membership and Lions lapel pin which Janette indicated he should wear with pride. Janette thanked Eduardo for all the continuing support that the Club has had from Ayuntamiento Torrevieja for the past nine years and particularly made mention of Graham Knight, Rosario Martinez and Jean Paul Mulero who have all helped smooth the path for the Lions when negotiating the vagaries of Spanish administration and bureaucracy. Eduardo responded by thanking Janette and the Club for all the excellent work undertaken tirelessly by them and intimated that he was indeed honoured to receive Honorary membership of such an excellent International Organisation The Torrevieja Costa Lions Club is part of the Lions Clubs International (LCI)

recognised globally as one of the finest Non Government Organisation(NGO) in the World. The Club has a commitment to support LCI in many circumstances such as natural disasters, disease eradication like malaria, measles, and river blindness in third world countries, plus provision of aids to vision in countries where no such provision is available, however the main focus of your local Club is to help those most in need in the local community, the City of Torrevieja and surrounding villages. Anyone who would like to become a member of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club can take the first step by contacting Membership Director Philip by e mail on philip.buckman@ btinternet.com To find out more about the Torrevieja Costa Lions visit the Club website on www.torreviejacostalions.org The Club is sponsored locally by many businesses who recognise The Lions as being very hard working in the Community, however no sponsorship can be enough to help the Lions continue with their excellent work, so any individuals or businesses who would like some information on sponsorship packages should in the first instance contact Sponsorship Director Jaimy by e mail on sparkles@hotmail.es Next April the Lions Celebrate their 10th Charter Night and would be delighted to have new members to swell “The Pride” and new sponsors on board to celebrate continuing success.

Why prune roses?

The aim is to improve flowering, to maintain an attractive shape and to keep plants healthy. But mention pruning roses and many people come up in a cold sweat, considering it to be difficult and complicated. This is largely because there are many different types of rose, some which need pruning in the spring and others later in the year.

How to make your cut

Use a pair of sharp secateurs to make a sloping cut, just above an outward facing bud. The slant of the cut should face away, so rain does not run into the bud and cause it to rot.

Aftercare

Once pruning has been completed, mulch plants generously, applying a thick layer of wellrotted manure or bark chippings.

local News Strawberry Fair raises €1500 All the Fun of the Flair at The Strawberry Fair - The Strawberry Fair this year has raised €1500 so far for Reach Out and other local charities! and more is expected when all the helpers get their monies in!! The first Saturday in May was The Strawberry Fair when Gill and Peter Savage open their finca home in San Miguel, they do this every year in May and often more than once a year to raise money for local charities.

After meeting Gill through a friend I was invited to go to The Strawberry Fair - well was I in for a surprise!! Never having been before or seen the house or the land, I was expecting a few cars and 30 or so people - wrong! A guesstimate would be 300 people or more as there was a steady stream of people and some were already leaving when I arrived at 5.15 p.m. about an hour or so after the event had started. Gill and Peter have an absolute army of friends and willing helpers some of whom had arrived complete with strawberry pinnies or T shirts at 10.00 o’clock in the morning. Understandably by 7.00p.m. some of these ladies were flagging and Myrna one brave lady helper took off her pinny and jumped in the pool! Geoff was MC for the afternoon and after 30 raffle prizes with still 10 to go he too

was flagging but we did not see if he jumped into the pool! Gill and Peter owners of FRISSAN Restaurant in San Miguel now take up take up the reigns at their fine dining restaurant in San Miguel and with a new chef and a very enthusiastic support team and they are very proud to keep getting to number 1 on Trip Advisor. Peter said: “Our aim is number one and to stay there - of course there is great competition from some of our neighboring restaurants but we welcome this as it keeps us on our toes!! Literally I don’t think Gill and I have done quite as much running around for quite a while!! Our message to our customers is - If you loved us please TELL THE WORLD - If you didn’t PLEASE TELL US! Our next charity event is “May Madness - Music and Magic” at FRISSAN RESTAURANT in San Miguel and will be at the end of May - we also have a very special Sunday Lunch planned for Sunday 25th of May when you will be greeted with complimentary cava and canapes our chef will be doing a cookery demonstration before lunch -for full details and to book for this and other fabulous food demonstration and free tastings coming up call us at FRISSAN on 966 723 485”.

Beauty help from around the house:

How to curl your lashes with tea spoons and use coffee filters to keep your skin dry Everyday items such as tea spoons, coffee filters have secret beauty uses Follow our top tips to save yourself money while still looking gorgeous TEA SPOON TO CURL LASHES Supermodel Miranda Kerr caused a stir recently when she told a reporter that she sometimes uses a tea spoon to curl her lashes. Curling makes them seem longer and thicker and gives the eyes a wider, more youthful look — but how on Earth do you get that effect with a tea spoon? ‘It’s actually very easy,’ says top make-up artist Sophia Price. ‘Simply hold the bowl of the tea spoon behind your upper lashes and work your way along your lash line with your thumb — pressing the hairs up and holding them for a few seconds along the edge of the spoon until they have a noticeable bend in them. ‘It works better if you warm the spoon between your fingers. Apply mascara immediately after curling to hold the shape.’ USE A MATCHBOX TO FILE YOUR NAILS A split nail can be infuriating and will catch on everything until it’s filed down. If you don’t have an emery board or clippers to hand, try the beauty editors’ favourite fast fix and search for a box of matches.

‘The strike strip — the bit you run the matches along — makes a surprisingly effective emergency nail file,’ says Roxanne Campbell, current UK Manicurist of the Year. COFFEE FILTERS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN DRY Does your skin tend to look shiny within hours of applying make-up? Facial blotting papers, which come in a book or pouch, are a great way to soak up oil but can cost a lot if you use them every day. Frugal beauty bloggers say a much cheaper option is hiding in your kitchen. Chosen because they are highly absorbent and lint-free, coffee filters, cut into strips, will soak up oil as well as any blotter, for a long-lasting matte effect POST-ITS FOR EYELINER Love the Sixties ‘kitten eye’ look of thick black eyeliner that flicks up at the outer corners — but find drawing those neat lines difficult? Try using the sticky edge of a Post-it note as a guide, says celebrity makeup artist Julia Carta. It works best with a soft black pencil rather than gel or liquid liners, which are likely to smudge. DID YOU KNOW? Tea was rare when it first came to England in 1660, so cups and spoons were much smaller. ‘Begin by sticking a small sticky note on to the skin at the side of your eye at an almost vertical angle,’ she says. ‘Using the edge of the note as a ruler, decide where you want the tail of your flick to finish and draw in from there, working along the stickie, and in and along the lid with feathered strokes. Monday 14th April saw our 5th Bi-Annual fashion show featuring Spring & Summer wear. Again thanks to generous donations of good quality clothing and attendance we managed to raise 1153.25 euro’s for our much needed charity.

Spectacle Wearer of the Year Competition Launched in Spain

1st May 2014 - Specsavers Opticas have launched the first Spectacle Wearer of the Year Awards in Spain to recognise specs as a fashion statement as well as a visual aid and celebrate the millions of ordinary people in Spain who look amazing in their glasses. They are searching for specs wearing champions who make their specs a part of their identity, no matter what their age or style.

The competition is open from 1st31st May and entries can be made via Facebook specsaversopticas or online at Specsavers.es/loveglasses. Entrants simply need to submit a recent colour photo of themselves wearing glasses. The person crowned the overall Spectacle Wearer of the Year will win a makeover, photo-shoot and a pair of designer frames. There will also be 8 semi-finalists who will win a pair of designer frames each. Details on the competition can be found on the website - specsavers. es/loveglasses The competition will be officially launched in all of their eight Spanish stores in May, with a frame styling day. All Specsavers staff are fully trained to offer style advice on the latest trends and styles to suit all face shapes and help make glasses wearers look and feel great. Lisa James from Specsavers Opticas

Despite the loss of three of our models at the last minute together with our usual photographer, due to various unforeseen circumstances, replacements were found and “the show went on”! Our models this time were Marje, Pam, Anne, Cath and Janice, the last three being the stand ins and their debut as models. Peter Smith was our photographer this time and what a sterling job he did; some great shots not only of the models but of the ladies who always come along to support us at these events, we all had a fantastic afternoon.

in Guardamar commented “Grab some style advice from our team, pick up some cool frames and then enter the competition for the chance of being the Spectacle wearer of the year and winning a great prize. We want to celebrate all those people who look great in their glasses, so come and join in!” Specsavers will A thanks also goes to also be collecting unwanted glasses Malcolm Ruston for the for Lions Club International to donate use of his sound system to those in need. and the music which accompanied our show. SOLTIMES MAY 2014

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. We have discussed the idea of passwords, what makes a good password, what makes a memorable password and why the 2 ideas rarely mix. Today I would like to offer a freeware solution that will allow you to have a memorable password and still have these obscure entropically challenged passwords that websites seem to love. For those of you who have just thrown your hands into the air with the cry “What is it with this man and free?”. Well I’ll tell you! Not everyone has 1000’s of €’s pension every month, and to them, open source software that allows for an optional donation, is far preferable to paying an obscene amount of money for a program that doesn’t live up to the rhetorical hyperbole used in it’s advertising spin! This is just good business and fiscal, common sense. To my shame I have been conned into buying the ‘latest and greatest’ version of this and that program and found that I had better quality from freely available sources. The program that we are going to learn about today is called “Keepass”. What is it? Is it safe? How does it work? What makes it worth looking at? All very good questions so let’s look at the first of them. What is it? Keepass is a program that holds all your your passwords in a secure file that requires a single password to access it. It is available for Windows, Linux, Android PocketPC, Blackberry and all Apple based products (iPad, iPhone, OS X), basically everyone can use it. Is it safe? Now we have hit on the most important question. YES! It uses 2 encryption (coding) methods. AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is the only methods used and recommended by the NSA (National Security

Agency – USA) and TwoFish method. How does it work? Unlike some password holders, everything is encrypted with your password and remains like that. Your passwords and safe information are only decoded and visible on the screen, close it down and your information is still safe and the memory used is wiped (so no ‘james bond’ like information recovery)! What makes it worth looking at? Now this is where this program comes into its own. It comes in two (2) flavours; standard install and portable. With the first, everything (program, data and help files) are stores on the one computer. With the second, everything can be stored on the memory chip. I have taken paranoia to another level by having the program installed on every device that I use and then having the data file on a chip. No worrying about updating a number of devices just making a single backup of your password data file! As of today, the best features that this program has to offer is the automatic ‘Filling in’ of password fields. I have, currently, 5 email addresses each having a different login name and password, a facebook account, 2 paypal accounts, an English and Spanish bank account, and dozens of logins for teamviewer (a program that allows, with your consent, me to take over your machine, anywhere in the world, and fix it) and finally a partridge in a pear tree. All this information is secure and at my fingertips whenever I need it. This is just a brief overview of the program. For the full ‘skinny’ go to ‘www. keepass.info’ and see for yourself just what it has to offer. Good Hunting! I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! If you would like a clinic nearer to you – make the suggestion using the email address under this article and we will see what can be done.

braben’s blog... Peaceful-NESS!

Well, there’s a claim that they’ve found the Loch Ness monster. The they in question are group of researchers who have been bobbing about on Loch Ness for some considerable time, pinging sonar here there and everywhere in an attempt to find this, allegedly, huge thing that lives there. Now, I am as romantic as the next person and would love to find the answer to some of the World’s greatest mysteries. It would be great to discover that the Loch Ness monster exists, that aliens are real or that some of the singers on Britain’s Got Talent are only pretending to sing badly. But what I wonder is, if the Loch Ness monster is as big as it’s supposed to be, how come we can’t find it? You would think, wouldn’t you that, with all the rinky dinky technology we have to hand, the problem of finding a large animal in a Scottish loch would prove much less of a challenge than, say, landing an unmanned craft on Mars or having a decent song winning the Eurovision Song Contest? It would seem not. The Loch Ness monster manages somehow to remain obstinately invisible to everything

alice’s restaurant

Last year when expIoring the delightful old quarter of Naples, or Napoli as it prefers I stumbled across an Aladdin’s Cave filled with DVDs. Always one for a rummage I found a copy of the 1969 film version of Alice’s Restaurant. I knew a film existed but had never seen it. Sadly I still haven’t seen parts of it as the video gets stuck in too many places but at 3€ what did I expect? The film came out just after Arlo Guthrie performed at Woodstock and it’s based on his 1967 anti-war song/tale Alice’s Restaurant, written as a protest against the Vietnam War. Voted 3rd best film of 1969, it grossed over $6 mil making it the 21st most viewed for the year. The Director Arthur Penn who’d also directed Bonnie and Clyde was nominated for an Oscar. Arlo sings the true tale of him and a friend doing a favour for Alice one Thanksgiving; remember Alice? Alice lived in the bell tower of an abandoned church and used to drop her rubbish from the tower into the church proper. They picked up the garbage (as they call it across the pond) and took it to the city dump. But the dump was closed so they found a little cliff off a side road which had a small pile of garbage at the bottom. Thinking one big pile was better than two little piles they dropped the garbage

we can throw at it. Perhaps if the thing is that intelligent we should be pleased that it keeps itself to itself, at the bottom of a pretty deep loch. Imagine the trouble it would cause if it decided to reveal itself and join us on the land? It may even overthrow a Kardashian or two! The thing that keeps me interested though is, what exactly would happen if this poor thing was finally discovered? Would it be hauled to the surface and put into some sort of aquarium? I wouldn’t be recommending that! We’ve all seen those horror films and we know exactly what would happen there don’t we? Just think King Kong and Fay Wray-for younger readers, ask your grandparents! I can just hear the “Jaws” music, can’t you? No, that’s a recipe for disaster To be perfectly honest, if the Loch Ness monster has any sense, it would stay where it was and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. For goodness sake, even the actor Charlie Sheen-well known lover of the quiet life- has been up there sailing around the loch looking for it. Now if that’s not a reason for the thing to stay submerged, I don’t know what is.

there. The next morning Police officer Obie phoned them as he had found Arlos name on an envelope at the bottom of the half ton pile of garbage. Arlo ends up with a $50 dollar fine and was told to pick up the garbage. When later he went to a US Army office to be processed and drafted to Vietnam he gets told to sit on the Group W bench because of his conviction. Jokingly Arlo recalls who he sat with all sorts of undesirables – mother rapers, father stabbers, even father rapers! All these desperate criminals ask him what he did to deserve being on the group W bench with the rest of them? He tells them ‘littering’ which doesn’t impress them and they huddle in a corner ignoring him until he says ‘and creating a nuisance!’ At this the fierce criminals allow him into their gang for the day. Next when the recruiting Sergeant asked if he has been rehabilitated, Arlo jumps around screaming ‘kill, kill, kill!’ Then he asks; ‘do I have to be moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after being a litterbug?’ He is excused on psychiatric grounds! It’s a fantastic anti Vietnam song; amusing and delighting over 19 minutes and if never heard there are many versions on YouTube with one of Arlo

performing it in the actual church from the song. In the movie Officer Obie actually plays himself as he figured it was better to make himself look a fool than an actor do it for him. Alice also plays a cameo role in the movie.

‘Strictly Dance’ daughter finishes 3rd in X-Factor 2014

Last night 5 April all roads led to the Emerald Isle for the grand final of the X-Factor 2014. With the venue packed to the rafters it proved to be an excellent evening with some very strong performances from the finalists. With a group, 2 flamenco dancers, a guitar/vocalist and 2 female vocalists the entertainment was varied in all aspects. The winner was a male flamenco dancer, the guitar vocalist finished in second and to our delight Janelle who is hoping to take up a career singing (no not dancing!) finished in third place. There was a strong consensus on the night that Janelle should have finished higher placed but she was delighted with her position nevertheless. We are absolutely delighted with Janelle who is going from strength to strength every time she sings and really draws people into her performances. Thanks is largely due to her vocal coach of the past 3 years Nigel Hopkins who is the trainer of the best voices and choirs you will hear on the Costa Blanca including Cantemos Youth Choir and Melody Makers International to name but a few! Lyn and Chris proud parents of Janelle run ‘Strictly Dance’ ballroom and latin classes and despite Janelle being able to dance prefers to sing and is following in the footsteps of her grandad who used to sing in

the clubs in a bygone era! Janelle’s forte is with musical theatre although she does enjoy singing songs from more modern artists such as Adele and Emeli Sande to name but a few. Janelle will be performing on 1 June at the New Asturias and at The Orihuela Costa Resort on 28 June along with her choirs. Tickets are available for both shows but are selling out fast. If you are interested in booking Janelle or if you would like to reserve tickets for either of these shows contact Lyn on 635584431 or 966 188 430

In an interview earlier this week on Spain’s premier radio network, Cadena Ser, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insisted that the latest unemployment figures show an overall improvement in the Spanish economy, but added that the change is still insufficient and hence his government’s policies will remain in place until the end of the legislature. Rajoy underlined the reversal in trend taking place in terms of unemployment in Spain and said that he is “optimistic” about the future. “We have reversed the trend of job losses and are now heading in the right direction”, said Rajoy, adding that “more jobs will be created in the months to come”, although “there is still an awful lot to be done”. This was Rajoy’s assessment on the figures announced on Tuesday in relation to recorded unemployment for April, which showed a reduction of 111,565 unemployed compared to March, the best result for the month of April since the current records began, coupled with an increase of 133,700 in contributors to the Spanish Social Security system, the second best figure since 2005. Mariano Rajoy remarked that the number of contributors has grown by 72,000 in the first four months of the year, compared with a decline of 210,000 in the same period of 2013. He also highlighted the increase in the active Spanish population noted in the latest Labour Force Survey and the reduction in the

temporary employment rate. Rajoy stressed that “by the end of the legislature, at the end of 2015, there will be fewer unemployed than at the end of 2011″, which he associated with the fact that the labour reform has established alternatives to dismissals. The President of the Government stated that the fall in unemployment comes within the framework of the global improvement in the Spanish economy, which translates, inter alia, into growth in GDP, a drop in the risk premium, an increase in foreign investment and the re-organisation of the financial system, and pointed out that the European Commission has forecast that Spain will grow more next year than other countries such as France, Italy and Germany. Rajoy went on to defend the macro-economic forecasts that the government has submitted to the European Commission, particularly relating to the reduction in the public deficit, and denied that any further adjustments will be made following the upcoming European elections on 25th May. In relation to the European Union, Mariano Rajoy maintained that one of the major challenges in the coming years will be to continue correcting the differences in access to financing which currently exist between the countries in the north and south of Europe, which affect, above all, small- and mediumsized companies. A Matter of Honour by Jeffrey Archer “The simple beauty of the golds, reds and blues left them both speechless. Neither of them had expected the icon to be so breathtaking.” I loved this Archer classic and felt that I was following the trials and tribulations of 007 instead of Captain Adam Scott. The story begins interestingly with the discovery that the painting of St. George and the Dragon, displayed in the Winter Palace, Leningrad for more than 50 years under heavy guard, is a fake. The treasures inside the palace have been carbon-dated and it is now known that this painting in question was done 500 years after Rublev’s original. Nicholas IInd, The Tsar’s traditional silver crown was not attached to the back of the frame. It was believed that the Tsar had secreted something valuable inside the icon, something so valuable that it would have guaranteed security for himself and his family. But it was hidden away for decades, undiscovered until 1966. The protagonist, Adam Scott has resigned his army commission after an exemplary career in distinguishing himself. He was awarded the Sword of Honour and was hopeful to join the Foreign Office. Action begins in Appleshaw, U.K. with the reading of his father’s will. A small, insignificant legacy is bequeathed to his mother, sister and Adam himself, expected but the biggest and strangest

surprise comes with an envelope stipulating that should he decide to open the envelope it must be on the condition that he will never divulge its contents to any living person. How mysterious. We discover that his father, Gerald had allegedly been a traitor. In his last posting he had responsibility for a number of senior ranking Nazis awaiting trial for war crimes: Hess, Doenitz, Speer and Goering. The night before Goering’s execution the Nazi officer had requested a private meeting with Gerald where he handed him an envelope hoping that this would compensate him for being held responsible for future events such as treachery. He was told it was a masterpiece and not to underestimate its value. Sadly, Gerald didn’t open or destroy the envelope so he didn’t benefit from Goering’s gift. The Nazi died from cyanide p o i s o n i n g immediately after this private meeting

and naturally, Gerald was held responsible for the suicide and dishonoured. Adam inherited the apparent sins of the father, hence his resignation from the army. Out of curiosity and with a sense of honour Adam opens the envelope hoping that his mother can benefit from the windfall. He discovers that Goering left his father the Tsar’s icon of St. George and the Dragon which is now rightfully his and thus he begins a perilous journey to Geneva to claim what is rightfully his. In true Archer style we meet the antagonist, a ruthless Russian KGB agent, capable of betraying his own father for his own advancement, lacking in moral scruples and extremely dangerous. He is given the commission of finding the original icon and returning it to its rightful ownersthe Russians. It’s not long before he crosses swords with Adam Scott. Adam is soon on the run when the newspaper headlines read: Englishman sought after German girl and Swiss taxi

driver murdered.” The Swiss police as well as English, Russian and American agents are on his tail, after his blood. Why is this icon so precious? All this espionage over a painting. Or is there more to it than meets the eye? Adam comes to realise that there is something much more valuable hidden inside the icon that justifies espionage and murder but what is it? Why do the Americans as well as the Russians and the British want to get their hands on it? Adam comes to realise that he can’t trust anyone and he has to face his adversary, Romanov, alone. Can he survive and more importantly, can he prove his father’s innocence in the death of Goering to restore his father’s honour posthumously? Prove the hero? Frank Marshall (Bourne and Indiana Jones fame) produced a movie based on Archer’s book which is worth watching. If you enjoyed this you might like to look at the sequel: Honour Among Thieves. Julie wasn’t wearing 2 (clue 3) so wasn’t wearing green (clue 6), Jane was wearing red (clue 1) and Josie wore yellow (clue 5), hence Julie wore blue, leaving Jackie wearing green wearing 2 (clue 6). As Jackie wore 2, she didn’t come 3rd (clue 2), and Jane came first (clue 1), which means that Jackie must have come 2nd in order to beat the girl wearing 3 (clue 5). We now know Jane won and Jackie was 2nd, therefore Julie must have come 3rd in order to beat the girl in yellow (clue 3), leaving Josie in last place. As Jackie came second and she beat the girl wearing 3 (clue 5), the girl wearing 3 must have come 4th (therefore Josie) as the girl wearing 1 came 3rd (clue 2). Julie (who is 3rd) wore 1 (clue 2), leaving Jane wearing 4. QED.

7. Slide each pizza off the baking tray directly onto the heated baking tray or pizza stone in the oven and cook for 5 -10 minutes, or until golden-brown and crisp. 8. To serve, scatter the basil leaves over the pizza and drizzle with a little more peanut oil.

Shrek’s Jacket Trustingly I entered the chemically perfumed emporium that is the Albox Tintorería and relinquished Pete’s very nice suede jacket into the care of the boss/receptionist/chief cleaning technician/ cook and bottle-washer, who stated that it would be ready in a week. Or maybe 10 days. I gave him a fortnight, which to a Spaniard is about 10 days. Once more I braved the unique odour that is common to all dry-cleaners, and was greeted with a merry Hola as the boss/etc scurried into the nether reaches of the shop to fetch my jacket. Returning he proudly he held up for my inspection a faux suede sleeveless jacket which

had obviously been designed and worn by Shrek. ‘That’s not mine.’ I said. ‘Mine has sleeves.’ ‘Sleeves.’ He reiterated thoughtfully. ‘I have given it to someone else.’ Horror spread across his face like spilt milk across a tiled floor, and for a moment we stood, the image of the owner of the sleeveless monstrosity parading around Albox in Pete’s good suede jacket hanging between us like the ghost of Banquo. ‘Come back next week,’ he begged, nearly bursting with earnest entreaty. ‘I will get it back.’ Oh yeah, you and whose army? I thought. Any person who would fit the faux jacket is certainly not going to meekly hand it back with an ‘Oh, sorry.’ It’s finders keepers, losers weepers! ‘I need it by Sunday.’ I said, with no regard for his rising blood pressure, and the possibility of a nervous breakdown. Desperately he began searching through the josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

By Jos Biggs

rails of garments ready for collection. ‘I will find it. Give me an hour.’ I gave him an hour and a bit. On my return he was in front of the giant washing machine hopping from foot to foot as if he were a cat on a bed of nails. He wrenched open the door, grabbed the contents in his arms, and bore them headlong to the counter. Thrusting his hands into the centre of the tangled mass as if performing abdominal surgery on a giant squid, he extracted - Pete’s jacket! ‘Ten minutes.’ He begged, as all fingers and thumbs he endeavoured to straighten out the precious garment. I gave him 20. On my return he was all urbane composure. With a flourish he handed me the jacket, neatly hung and bagged in plastic. As he did so he sagely intoned ‘There are no problems which cannot be resolved, except death.’ He wasn’t thinking that just under an hour ago!

alqueria Of ball-bearings and exotic fruit John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Not all conflict in Alqueria is based on barrio rivalry. Take the case of Cartera Frederico, the bank manager and Dr Cortarduras the Newcomer’s GP. Both belonging to the Newcomer’s barrio, they haven’t been on speaking terms for almost three decades. It all started some thirty years ago when the good doctor was treating Rodriquez’s wife for a case of Goooin’s disease. This malady usually only affects ripening root vegetables, although there are obvious similarities. Dr Cortarduras had mentioned an investment opportunity, the Little Ball, Big Ball, Bigger Ball-Bearing factory of San Sebastián. At about this time Cartera Frederico had newly arrived in Alqueria and was keen to ingratiate himself with the olive mill owner, Rodriquez. Frederico’s career had not been spectacular, in fact he had been promoted sideways and sent to the most obscure sub-branch in Spain, Alqueria. It was hoped that here his incompetence would not be noticed and even if it was Alqueria was of little consequence. Cartera Frederico suggested an alternative stock that of the Icelandic Pomegranate and Calabashtree Plantation. Rodriquez went with the bank managers advice after all it was his territory. If you can cast your mind back to 1985 you may recall two events of international importance which profoundly effected Rodriquez’s shareholdings. First was the infestation of Waffenstuffen’s Weevil which killed off all exotic fruit production in and close to the Arctic circle. Second, the issue of ten wheeled rocket propelled roller-skates to all front line NATO

troops causing an unprecedented demand for ball bearings of all sizes. Rodriquez lost thousands. He moved his account to another bank and only dealt with Cartera Frederico when it involved other people’s money. Frederico blamed the Doctor personally for the Waffenstuffen’s Weevil infestation even suggesting that the medical man had bred the insects himself. He did however withdraw his comments following the threat of legal action. If they ever found themselves in the Bar La Golondrina at the same time the bank manager would say in an overly loud voice, “I have private medical treatment in Spain, I don’t trust these Alquerian butchers” or some similar rhetoric. Dr Cortarduras for his part had been spiking Frederico’s Remitroot Wine with a strong laxative for years. A condition which has cost the unsuspecting bank manager a small fortune to have treated privately in Almería. Which also explains why Frederico’s condition has defied all attempts of a cure and has made the front page of several medical journals. The depth of Alquerian discord and malcontent is certainly deep. No one is spared apart perhaps from Loco Paco, befriended by his imaginary pets, he is a threat to no one.

Truth or Fiction, It’s a Good Yarn I am wondering about Robin Hood at the moment. It’s just that having recently re-read ‘The Adventures of Robin Hood’ by Roger Lancelyn Green, I am confused as to just who Robin Hood really was. Where did he come from, was he really the hero that he is popularly portrayed as and indeed, did he really exist at all? I am also wondering where the heck the author’s parents dug up the name Lancelyn, but that’s another matter entirely. It seems strange that one of our best known English heroes and one who is recognised internationally, may be a fictional character based on a mixture of obscure figures who lived in various parts of England and who were often separated by a century or two. So I have done some digging of my own and come to the conclusion that I am even more confused than before. But it has thrown up some interesting things that are worth mentioning here. Take Little John. According to the legend, or at least one version of it, his real name was John Little and that contrary to the name, he was built like a Nottingham brothel. However I much prefer another less popular version of who John was and it’s one that appeals much more to my own bizarre imagination. In this one John is referred to as ‘little’ because he

stood not much more than four feet tall. It is said that they met at a crossing of one of the streams that ran through Sherwood, Robin on one side and John whatever his real name was, on the other. The only crossing was a bridge that consisted of a single felled tree, wide enough for only one person to cross, so with neither party wishing to give way to the other, they set-to with quarter staffs which resulted in Robin taking an early and unexpected bath. Why they couldn’t have waded across in the first place and avoided the confrontation is beyond me, as it becomes clear in most versions of this event, that the water was only knee deep. But there you go, it’s the old ‘my quarter staff is bigger than yours’ man thing. Or perhaps it’s simply the aversion to water that twelfth and thirteenth century people had. But in any event it would seem that the description of John Little as a giant, was put about by Robin to avoid the humiliation of being bested by a dwarf. Will Scarlet was so named, it is thought, because of his penchant to mince about in flamboyant red garments but if this was the case, then he would have stood out in the forest like a ham sandwich in a synagogue and been an easy target for the sheriff’s men. More plausible is the lesser known version that he had been afflicted with some nasty disease from foraging through medieval wheely bins in the streets looking for scraps of festering food, which had left him with a permanent fiery rash. It is telling that in many accounts, he is shunned by the other outlaws and left to take his meals alone in the camp.

Perhaps this is where the expression, ‘avoid like the plague’ originates. Robin’s followers are always referred to as the Merry Men. This could well have been the case because from the many candidates thought to have been the model for Maid Marion, there is one who was a notorious harlot of the day around the Nottingham area – Marion de Quickie. If there had been roundabouts then, she would surely have been a familiar face to the riders of passing horses and carts. So on the assumption that as a ‘friend’ of Robin, she would also have been well known to his troop of outlaws, it follows that they would have been a merry bunch indeed having at one time or another, probably made Marion. If you see what I mean. I can’t make up my mind about Friar Tuck. All the stories show him to have indeed been a friar and a man of God, but this is totally at odds with the fact that he spent most of his time necking strong ale, breaking the heads of Norman soldiers with a wicked looking staff that he carried, and breaking wind at the most inopportune times, such as the occasion when he was conducting a marriage ceremony for a local yeoman. But the theory about the whole Robin Hood legend that I like the most, is that in fact the band - as his followers were called - was precisely that and the Robin Hood Band were no more than popular entertainers of their day, playing at many weddings, cock fights and executions. Alas, after 700 years, we are never likely to know for sure.

MAZARRON FC 6 MORATALLA AD 0 Mazarron totally dominated this game and ran out easy winners against a poor Moratalla team. Coach Javi named four 16 year olds in the squad, three of whom were in the starting line up and they all contributed to this victory. After 14 minutes Tico’s through ball found Fran who cleverly back heeled the ball into the path of Jose Ruben. The striker ran on to fire his 20th goal of the season past the Moratalla keeper. Cecilio was influential up front and provided Ruben with a number of further opportunities which were

not converted. Mazarron did not increase their lead until six minutes before half time when another fine pass from Tico saw Ruben racing through on the left. His shot was saved by the visiting keeper but only into the path of Cecilio who unleashed a powerful drive into the net to make the score 2-0 to Mazarron at the interval. Tolo replaced Ruben at

half time and Mazarron continued their onslaught on the Moratalla goal playing some excellent football. After 50 minutes, young central defender Ismai, who was making his debut, played a through ball to Dani whose fierce shot was well saved. Shortly afterwards Moratalla were reduced to 10 man when one of their players was dismissed after an altercation with the referee. Mazarron then went into a three-goal lead when Randry’s left wing cross was met with a looping header by Moha and the

ball nestled in the top corner of the net. Things went from bad to worse for Moratalla when they were harshly penalised for a back pass two yards from goal. Tico tapped the ball to Tolo who fired home to make it 4-0. It was soon 5-0 when excellent work by Juanillo found Tolo on the edge of the penalty area. Although his shot was blocked, another of the Mazarron youngsters,

Overall winner on the day was Michelle Evans who also won the gold division, the silver division was won by Buck Taylor who got a substitute Gines, was on hand to score with the rebound. Five minutes before time Chema was brought

down on the edge of the penalty area and, despite Moratalla protests, the referee awarded a penalty which Tolo coolly despatched to make him joint top scorer in the league this season. Oriel 4 v. Daya Nueva 2 Cadets Alicante 2A Daya Nueva Just Not Good Enough !

The home side started well and almost opened the scoring in the second minute but the crossbar came to Daya’s rescue. Oriel were having the better of the opening exchanges and looked far from a team anchored at the wrong end of the table. They confirmed this on 6 minutes when a fiercely struck shot flew past a stranded Danni in the Daya goal to open the scoring. The visitors did create a good opening on 9 minutes but Marcos blasted high and wide. Oriel continued to press and on 40 minutes another fierce shot went millimeters wide. With the visitors struggling to get into the game Francisco hit a long ball out of defence that fell nicely to Luis, he cleverly lobbed the advancing keeper to level the scores on 25 minutes. Just minutes

later Marcos had a good chance to score a second for Daya but his shot flew just over the bar. Then Luis went close to scoring his second but his header was saved by the keeper. The visitors were now enjoying their best spell of the game and on 36 minutes a high ball into the home side’s penalty area caused panic and allowed Luis to score his and Daya’s second. So 2 - 1 at half time and the visitors had at last woken up ! As expected Oriel started the second half at a fantastic pace trying to level the scores as soon as possible but the visitors’ defence coped well. On 55 minutes the home side did equalise when a brilliant strike from distance gave Danni no chance. Could Daya raise their game again and find a third and may

be match winning goal ? Not so as it was Oriel who took the lead when on 70 minutes a good inter-passing move presented them with the easiest of chances that they gratefully accepted. So it was now backs to the wall for the visitors as they tried to contain a rampant Oriel. This they did up until the final minute when from a very tight angle the home side scored their 4th to make it 4 1 final score. It was a bad result for Daya as they had worked very hard to get back into the match after conceding the early goal. They were not helped by two players being ruled out having accumulated 5 yellow cards each. Take nothing away from the winners, they were the better side but how are they second to bottom?

Racing San Miguel v CD Montesinos

Playing on a patchy, bumpy grass pitch, four key players missing was no excuse for a very poor final match day MONTESINOS performance in this Sat’ evening kick-off. SAN MIGUEL set out their stall to good effect, and caused MONTE problems early on, and this culminated in the 15th minute when the away defence let a cross over for a simple headed goal 1-0. With only little OMAR upfront MONTE offered very little in way of attack, but did draw level when MARCOS was tripped in the area and he calmly slotted home 1-1.The home

side were far the better, playing close controlled football, and they got their reward with a splendid move down the left saw SAN MIGUEL’S No 11 strike with ease, 2-1 to the delight of the vast friendly home support. Half-time. JUANPE made 2 changes at the interval with JOSE CARLOS and CHRISTIAN replacing PARADES and LOPEZ. This had no impact as MONTE lost their shape to concede the 3rd. CHRISTIAN brilliantly saved, but the rebound was hammered in, 3-1. SAN MIGUEL totally dominated the

second period and limited MONTE to only 2 chances shots by RUBEN and MARCOS. CHRISTIAN made another great save and the home side hit the bar. MONTE showed lack of entrepreneurial skills and the 40 or so travelling fans prayed for the final whistle. DIEGO and TELLO came on for OMAR and RUBEN as a last throw of the dice but this made no difference and the match finished 3-1. VILLAMARTIN WELCOMES SMGS

This week 36 members and their guests played the tree line course of

Villamartin which has had a lot of work done on it lately all for the

El Plantio 2 Golf Society As usual, a lovely day with wall-to-wall sunshine and a gentle breeze blowing. We played a team game on Tuesday and this week it was the Waltz, some good scores in and a very close finish all round. With 20 players this week we went out in 5 teams of 4 and although it was a team game, all individual scores were kept, so an individual member with a good score could be cut, unfortunately for Keith, his team came second, but his score was 41 stableford points

means that he will be cut for his next game. The results this week: Nearest the pin hole 5: Lyn Young, Hole 9: Gordon Abba 3rd place John O’Brien, Mel Hope, Henry & Bob Bryant with a score of 86 pts 2nd place Ray Housley, Stig, Keith Smith & Lyn Young with a score of 87 pts (on countback) 1st place Ian Henderson, Rod Loveday, Martin Rickman & George Stanhope with a score of 87 pts

better and it was in very good condition. Our thanks go to all the staff at Villamartin for their hospitality. for La Serena, 7th May 2014 On this very pleasant day in history, Germany signed an unconditional surrender in Rheims, France and 31 turned out for our latest trip to the gentle watering hole of La Serena to play a 2 ball better ball (medal) which caused some confusion on how to score the cards! This is a venue where as many of you will know, 16 holes can grab your balls and of course, I do

Gold category’s scores were very tightly contested with Theo Boelhouwer(36), Brian Staines (38) & John Osborne taking first prize winning on count back with 38 points. Well done to all those in the prizes! This week’s Abacus prize of a very nice bottle of wine went to

That said, there was one Norwegian (Dag Lovas) who’s eyes were watering when he found out we had run out of stock and that left him with just one ball. It has to be said that the course is in quite good condition and the staff were very obliging, as they always are on this course. With many balls lost into a watery grave, there is no doubt that the sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels for the NTP’s would be of great value to Matthew Taylor, Paula Hagart, and guests Karl and Mark. The scores on the day

were surprisingly decent with scores in the low mid 60’s and it was an excellent 62 that took the Guest Prize for Father and Son team of Harry and Mark with Harry shooting a nett level par and Mark only 2 over nett. The members also needed a nett 62 and this was achieved by the winning pair of Matthew Taylor and Bill Starkey. 3 shots back on 65 were the Norwegian equivalent to Mork and Mindy in the guise of Dag Lovas and Roger (veldighyggeligmann) Nilsen taking the runnersup slot and a further 3 shots back with a 68 were Joe Dean and Steve Higgins to claim 3rd spot. Tuesday Night Trios Ten Pin Bowling League Week 28 – Final Night - 6th May 2014

As we started the last night of the league, all attention was concentrated on the top of the league, where Split Happens only needed 2 points to take the title. Facing an in form The Dreamers team, SH knew they would have to bowl well and, with Kjell Monsen leading with a 259 scratch game, they comfortably picked up the 2 points needed, to secure the title. The match went flat after the first game and SH took the game 8 – 0 but, Kjell managed to “concentrate” to amass a 644 scratch series and so consolidate the mens’ high average with 192 per game. Shane Winfield of Cornish Pride hadn’t liked the ‘ribbing’ he took last week, after Sue W beat him ‘easily’ and, with a 238 scratch game and 671 handicap series, firmly put his wife “back in her place”. His total was not enough to prevent Lucky Strike drawing 4 – 4, with Sue Duke of LS increasing her individual scratch high game to 198. Team Finland, lying second in the league, knew they needed 4 points to keep their position and, when they took the first game, all was going well. However, Crazy Pinz had other ideas and, with Ivar Henriksen bowling his highest scr and h/c series of 558 and 648 respectively, shocked TF and took the game 6 – 2. This meant that, if Hall y Day could beat Bar Mosquitos 8 – 0 and bowl well, they would snatch

second place. With Lesley Day bowling a superb 653 scr and 701 h/c series, ably backed up by Martti Timonens 648 and Tony Rays 622 h/c series, they took the team high h/c series for the season with 1971 and, overhauled TF by 140 pins, to grab second place. Los lobos, knowing they were ‘safe’ from the wooden spoon this season, enjoyed a 4 – 4 drawn game with Los Bandidos. Maurice Allen had his ‘bit’ for company and, relaxed with a steady 543 series. Although Juans’ Warriors knew their fate, they still wanted as many points as possible and, with captain Jamie Brian rolling a solid 561, they shared the spoils with Caballo Negro, 4 – 4. Splash set out on lanes 19 and 20, determined to put Hall y Day under pressure for a top three finish but, The Mixers were in no mood to roll over. Splash couldn’t get going in the first game and, TM took the game by 10 pins. Even with Juanjo Carral bowling a 234 scr second game, a 6 – 2 points win wasn’t enough to move Splash into the top three. As another succesful season comes to an end, our presentation night will be held at The Splash Bar and Restaurant Torrevieja, on Saturday 17th May, where all the winners will receive their ‘rewards’, for their endeavours this season.

Payday is on Saturday, 17th May 2014 at La Serena, in the bar area,

This coming weekend ITV Orihuela RFC play their last league game of the seasons on 10 May away to Yecla, hoping to be able to get a full squad of players for the game. Looking to end the season on a high against a team that has made really good progress against all the other teams, when they have put their real B team in. Yecla like the other new teams in the league have done themselves really proud and played some very good rugby and looking forward to seeing all of them back next season together with any new teams in the region. A win on Saturday could see ITV Orihuela RFC finish the season in second place, which is a fantastic achievement consideing the team is made up of juveniles coming up a level, players that have never played before and been their first taste of the sport and the old boys like myself who are slowing down a bit. Let us hope that we can keep them together for next season and bring in more fresh

Then on 2 August the San Juan beach rugby tournament is on again. I am now at Zoco Market on Sundays third row up from the road at the back of the market, so come on down there for all of your rugby branded clothing and playing gear, and anything you want to know about rugby in the area. Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15. So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are. If you would like more information about what is going on in the club, you can contact the club by phoning myself, Garry on 692 767 242, and for the juniors contact Oscar on 600 871 606 (Spanish)
