Sensol golf CLARE´S CORNER – BUYING IN SPAIN Spain is one of Europe’s most attractive countries, with much to offer to those who settle here. In recent years, the downturn in the property market has lead to a surplus of property for sale. However, Spain is still popular with British buyers and despite the economy, Spain still offers a relaxing way of life, and the current market means that buyers can grab a bargain. The cost of living in Spain is also much cheaper than in the UK. In 2013/2014 foreign buyers returned to Spain´s property market. More than a fifth of all Spanish residential sales were to foreign buyers which is good news for sellers. So, what is involved if you are considering purchasing a home in Spain? If you purchase a resale property, once your offer is accepted you will be expected to pay a deposit (upto 10% of the purchase price). This enables your solicitor to do the necessary investigations. I would highly recommend that the services of a solicitor who speaks Spanish and English are enlisted to ensure the process runs efficiently. A completion date is agreed which is usually a few weeks after the offer is agreed (much quicker than in the UK). Should you cancel your purchase, you forfeit the deposit but should the seller cancel the sale, they must pay you twice the amount of the deposit. On top of the sale price will be various fees and taxes. You should allow around 10% on top of the purchase price to cover these fees.

Dave Rawson Comedy Hypnotist Show

Sunday April 13 saw the amazing Dave Rawson Comedy Hypnotist Show presented by Helping Hands at the the beautiful Hotel Puerto Juan Montiel in Aguilas. Presented on the Terrace overlooking the playa and marina, Dave began the show by gently coaxing some very nervous guests to volunteer. From that moment the evening was set!

Carried out very professionally and respectfully, the whole show drew howls of laughter from guests and hotel staff alike. Three main volunteers, Chris Vollmer, Debbie Cook (proprietor of Euphoria Beauty Salon, Esparragal) and Nikki Tieko, Vice President of Helping Hands, took part in the show. Under hypnosis throughout the evening they “won the lottery, played in a band, spoke in Klingon tongue” and much much more. Of course they remember absolutely nothing! Many tears of laughter were shed throughout the evening and it is expected that Dave will return much later in the year for a repeat performance!

By choosing the right estate agent and a good lawyer you should be moving into your new home in Spain very soon. Clare Belton

local News Well Dressing Ceremony

Saturday, May 31sr. 11 a.m Parque Los Palacios, Camposol Well dressing is believed to have started as a pagan ritual in Derbyshire, to herald the arrival of summer. This festival was adopted by the Christian Church and spread throughout villages all over the U.K. This year it will be celebrated in Mazarron, Spain ! The idea was instigated by the Forget me Not Group, who provide a respite care session in the Community Centre every Monday for those members of our community in need of 24 hour support. Professional carers, aided by trained volunteers provide a programme of events planned to create interest, and perhaps more importantly, to allow a couple of hours of rest for those charged with permanent care duties. A recent topic of interest was Well Dressing. Apart from being the name of the ceremony, a Well Dressing is a work of art, much like a painting, but created with natural materials. Those attending were charged with creating such a piece. We have a well, crafted in traditional style by Jason Jessop, in our park. Los Palacios Garden Volunteers were keen to see the finished work presented to our well, to continue the tradition. Anette’s Art Group offered to create more art work, in their interpretation

of the original style, which will also be presented, and Reverend Maureen Kent, of St. Nicholas Church, Camposol, offered to provide a short service, and bless our well. And so the fiesta was born. According to tradition, all those attending will be invited to present plants to surround the well with colour at the end of the ceremony, to welcome the summer, and in our case, to welcome everyone coming to Camposol. Plants will be available to purchase on the day for only 1 euro. And next ...... Drinks and refreshments will be available. Several of the talented local musicians have offered to entertain us, and, there will be time to enjoy our beautiful park. This is not intended to be a fund raising event, but, an example of various local groups working together to make Los Palacios a better place.

Larkspur in the Garden Larkspur prefers well-drained soil so it matters less whether the soil is rich, poor, sandy, rocky or loamy, and more whether the soil holds water for too long. Larkspur will tolerate part shade but prefers full sun. Larkspur blends well with other flowering perennials like hardy geranium, phlox, roses, and lavender. Larkspur has an old-fashioned, cottage garden appeal as well so landscape designers can try combining with other popular cottage garden plants.

Larkspur

Established 40 years in the UK

Larkspur, once classified as Delphinium ajacis or D. ambiguum, is now listed under the scientific name of Consolida ambigua. Still, the relation to delphinium is obvious, even to the untrained eye. Many gardeners enjoy this perennial for indoor flower arrangements and bouquets.

Hibiscus are large shrubs or small trees that produce huge, colorful, trumpet-shaped flowers over a long season. Other common names include Chinese hibiscus and tropical hibiscus. About This Plant Hibiscus are deciduous shrubs with dark green leaves; the plants can grow to 15 feet tall in frost-free areas. Flowers may be up to 6 inches diameter, with colors ranging from yellow to peach to red. Hibiscus can be planted singly or grown as a hedge plant; they can also be pruned into a single-stemmed small tree. The flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Special Features Attracts hummingbirds Attracts butterflies Site Selection Select a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Hibiscus also adapt well to growing in containers. Planting Instructions Plant in spring, summer, or fall, spacing plants 3 to 6 feet apart. Dig a hole only as deep as the root ball and 2 to 3 times as wide. If your soil is in very poor condition, amend the soil you’ve removed from the hole with a small amount of compost. Otherwise don’t amend it at all. Carefully remove the plant from the container and set it in the hole. Fill the hole half full with soil, then water it well to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Let the water drain, then fill the remainder of hole with soil and water thoroughly. Care Hibiscus require at least 1 inch of rain (or equivalent watering) each week. They like to be constantly moist,

but not wet. Feed twice a month during the growing season and prune as necessary to control plant size and cut back errant branches. Cut branches back to just above a side shoot. Hibiscus are sensitive to cold and should be protected when temperatures dip into the 30s; container-grown plants should be brought indoors. Check plants periodically for pests such as aphids, white flies, and mealybugs. Use a horticultural oil or insecticidal soap to control these pests.

Knickers! Is that true? People,( well women actually) are acutely aware of the way fashion works. Styles changing on a yearly and even seasonal basis, particularly women’s clothing. Sometimes completely new styles are created but more often old styles are simply rehashed. Yet the lingerie industry seems to change only relatively slowly despite the fact that it is a multi-billion pound global industry. Well, that’s what we all thought, but check these fascinating facts and statistics. In the past 10 years the average bra size has gone from 34B to 36C Twenty years ago a DD cup size was unusual Now stores need to stock G cups. The change in diet is supposed to be the cause of this. WOMEN PREFER % Panties 52 Thongs 31 Other Styles 10 No Lingerie At all 7 The top three motivators women buy lingerie are: • Build Self Confidence • Feel powerful • Seduction The term lingerie is derived from the French word linge which means “washable” or “do the laundry.” In American culture, sets of lingerie are generally made of satin, silk, Lycra and lace. Undergarments made of cotton are typically not under the lingerie category. The 3 most popular lingerie colours are; purple, lilac and blue. You might think these are somewhat unemotional, however, don’t mention that to French designers. They say that purple lingerie is more affectionate than white. Lilac is the colour of virginity, blue suits pale skin and red is the devil’s colour. Recently, Italian designers stated that colour tendency is becoming more complicated and deep. They changed beige to a brand new tint that is almost identical to skin colour. Here at Shani’s Lingerie we offer a free bra fitting service and although we cannot guarantee a successful seduction we can help you with attractive bras that also feel comfortable. We also have a large range of cup and strap sizes in different models. Many of these also come in several different colours. If you want a fitting you might want to come early or call to make an appointment so that we can make sure we can give you all the time you need to ensure a comfortable fit.

Quality e-Cigarettes

Crash and win in Catalunya Supermoto championship

Electronic Cigarettes are a healthier alternative? Smoking was glamorised for many years by Hollywood and the silver screen, through such stars as Bette Davis and Audrey Hepburn, portrayed cigarette smoking as alluring and enticing. However, on January 11th 1964 the Unites States Surgeon General announced that smoking was a direct cause of lung cancer. Overnight, smoking was considered something quite sinister and responsible for not only lung cancer but also a whole host of other deadly and life-threatening diseases. The American Centre for Disease Control estimates that cigarette smoking is responsible for an estimated one and a half million deaths per year, worldwide. The CDC reports that averagely, adults who smoke die 14 years earlier than non smokers. They also report that it is not only smokers that fall victim to the harmful effects of smoking. Every year, 49,400 deaths are attributed to the effects of second hand smoke. However, millions of people continue to consume the 4,000 chemicals, 400 of which are considered poisonous or toxic, present in each cigarette. Not only is smoking responsible for numerous forms of cancer in the lungs, larynx, mouth, throat, bladder, pancreas, kidneys and stomach, it is also responsible for heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, sexual dysfunction, emphysema and the worsening of asthma. Smokers face not only physical addiction but psychological addiction as well. It is one thing to recognise the harmful and life-threatening risks that cigarettes pose, it is an entirely a different matter to successfully kick the habit. According to drugs.com 46 per cent of smokers in America try to quit each year but only 10 per cent succeed. So, are electronic cigarettes a safer alternative? In 2003 a Chinese pharmacist, Hon Like invented the electronic cigarette. Unlike conventional tobacco based cigarettes, e-Cigarettes deliver nicotine through an inhaled vaporised water solution, without the inclusion of tar, carbon monoxide and a whole host of other deadly chemicals found in the traditional cigarette. Debate rages throughout the world just how much safer e-Cigarettes are, but research conducted by Michael Siegel at Boston University suggests that e-Cigarettes may indeed reflect a much safer alternative to conventional cigarettes. Siegel concludes that by isolating nicotine, eCigarettes should carry far fewer chemical risks than traditional cigarettes. Michael Siegel and his colleagues found evidence that vaping diminishes cravings among smokers, not only by nicotine consumption, but by fulfilling the desire to hold something in their hand or insert something in their mouths. Siegel says “The relevant question is not are these things safe, but are these things much safer than real cigarettes, and do they help people quit smoking? The answer to both of those questions we know is yes. You have to make up your own mind but if you decide that e-cigarettes are worth a try, contact www.tgfsales.com who have a great range for you to choose from, catering not only a large range for the cigarette smoker but for the cigar and pipe smoker as well.

The Supermotoland.com race team were in Catalunya over the weekend with both their riders competing for honours in the Catalan Supermoto championship. It was the first time that the racing brothers from Murcia had been to the Menarguens circuit near to Lleida and so they had a limited amount of time to learn the circuit before their qualifying sessions. Despite the lack of circuit knowledge and a crash each in practice, both brothers managed to qualify on the front row of the grid for each of their races. With Mat Ford–Dunn qualifying in 4th position in the SM4 class and younger brother Anthony qualifying a superb 4th in the premier SM 1 class. Anthony was the first to race and the battle between the first 5 riders was very intense with close racing throughout the field. Anthony was in fourth position on the last lap and whilst making a pass on the brakes at the end of the straight he fell, damaging his bike and dislocating his shoulder. The damage to the bike meant he was unable to remount despite his shoulder clicking back into place as he picked himself up. Anthony was unable to compete in the remaining race due to his injury and therefore lost his lead in the championship from his two race wins in the previous round of the Catalan championship in Mora de Ebre. Mat Faired better in both of his races in the SM 4 class with a double victory that extends his championship lead and gives him four wins, from four races. It could have been a different story though as a puncture in his front tyre in the first race meant he had a desperate last couple of laps to keep ahead of the pack as his front tyre slowly deflated.

The brothers now have a few weeks of testing and training ahead before they line up on the grid in Badajoz for the 2nd round of the Spanish championships on the 8th June. With both brothers holding 3rd position in the SM open and SM 35 Master classes you can bet that they will both be looking for a bit more speed over the coming weeks to hopefully elevate them to the top step of the podium. The latest video of the first round of the Spanish championship and race reports can be found on the teams website. www.supermotoland.com

SOLTIMES MAY 2014

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Portable or Fully Install? It’s a bit like asking whether your want your eggs fried or boiled (do you remember that advert?). There are, currently, only 2 choices. You do know that I’m actually talking about the choice between fully installing a program onto your computer or just having a portable version, Don’t you? Does it make that much difference whether you choose a fully functional version of the program that will work off a memory stick or have the more traditional method of doing a complete install? “Horses for courses” as my Dad always said (something I didn’t understand until I had to write a program to calculate the odds at horse racing – It wasn’t too bad, 7 from 10 placed and 4 of them winners! My dad is a great teacher!). To start with, maybe we should look at the real differences between the 2 options. Historically, Microsoft in days gone by, would put all the files that were needed to run a program, in a single folder (properly known to us “old school” farts as ‘Directories’). It was then clear where everything was, and extremely easy to see what, if anything, had been accidentally removed / renamed or corrupted. Them were the days when the computer started with a black screen and “C:>” in white letters – aagh nostalgia! Today, everything has a place to go to and only Windows knows exactly where! This is, without a doubt, a blessing. Albeit in disguise, as it means that you can get on and use the computer as the tool it is. The originator’s name for this convoluted method of separation has long been forgotten, but the legacy lives on. So, what are the benefits and drawbacks of each of the methods and what made me consider this

particular topic? First the benefits! Using this method of separation, files are stored in a method that encourages efficiency for the system. Linux / Unix and assorted cousins have used a simplified method that is similar for 50 years for the same reason. Having said that, the current Windows NTFS (New Technology File System) has, by far, the best specifications for storage of quantity (even better than my beloved Linux Ext4 file system). Using this method reduces the need for defragmentation and therefore increases the lifespan of the hard drive! The drawbacks are few but the most noticeable one is the fact that you will always need the master install disk for any software that you use on your computer. For example, if you cannot do without your beloved Microsoft Office (actually a fine piece of software), then should you lose it through hardware failure, system upgrade and Grandchildren messing things up, you can not recover it without the original master disk(s)! A singular drawback that is a result of the efficiency of the system, like so many other things computer, is that it is difficult of us mere mortals to understand clearly. I have just upgraded a computer from XP to 7 and the owner wanted me to ‘Transfer’ their copy of MS Office to the new system and had some difficulty understanding that this wasn’t possible. Fortunately, they have the original CD to hand and will be able to do it themselves in less than 20 minutes over a coffee :-) Anyway, time for me to get off. You know how to get hold of me and where I’ll be. See you there. Have a great weekend in this glorious sun.

Roland Garros Inspiration has many sources for my weekly scribbling’s; the impending French Grand Slam tennis tournament lead my dear wife Katherine to mention she needed some facts to Twitter out as part of her job at William Hill. So quicker than a ferret up a drainpipe I delved into the short but incredible history of Roland Garros. Born in 1888 on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, Roland Garros initially wanted to be a concert pianist, studying music in Paris. When he went to the Reims Air show in 1909 the flying bug bit him. He took flying lessons and earned pilot licence no.147 in 1910. This was the beginning of powered flight; only a few years earlier in 1903 the Wright brothers had flown and steered their heavier than air Flyer for the very first time. Garros joined the Moisant International Flying Circus; he performed extensively in North America including Mexico in 1911 for President Diaz. It was a sales demonstration to show planes were perfect for reconnaissance. Mexican troops took cover and Garros successfully located them

braben’s blog... Sandwiched Out !

Last Tuesday, around lunchtime, something happened to me that hasn’t happened for, well, let’s say quite some time! In fact, I must admit that I was beginning to think I’d never experience the thrill of it again. You guessed it…I had an idea. Oh, sorry, were you on a different page then? The idea was just a fleeting thing at first, you know, just sort of skulking in the corners of my brain, dodging any attempt to make itself known. So I did what I often do at times like this-lunchtimes that is-I decided to make a sandwich. And it was this decision that made me realise what my idea was. A sandwich in a can! You see, it’s not that I am unable to make a sandwich, it’s just that, well, I can’t be bothered with the job of throwing it all together and then doing that clearing up thing afterwards. Yes, I know that sounds awful but, well, a King Sized Snickers does have its merits as a quick lunch, not least of these is the total lack of any dishwashing. And it is here that my sandwich in a tin made an entrance. Why not, I reasoned, have a sandwich, ready made, in a can. Perfect for those with busy lives. Perfect at work when you haven’t had time to make lunch the night before. Perfect for lazy lumps who simply can’t be bothered with the hassle of making sandwiches some-most!-days. That’s when I resolved to develop a sandwich in a can. What an idea. You can imagine my excitement as I daydreamed of the small fortune my new idea would make. I was sure that this giant leap for the sandwich makers of the World would lead to at least millionaire status for me! Then disaster. It has already been done. What a cheek, someone stole my idea even before I had it. Criminal. An American chap invented the Candwich over 10 years ago and has done jolly well out of it thank you. The rotten thing has made a ton of money selling BBQ Chicken, Pepperoni Pizza and Peanut Butter and Jelly Candwiches. Well there’s nothing left for it now, it’s back to the drawing board for that brilliant idea. I know, how about a talent show where nobody has any talent and all the judges are painful bores-oh that’s been done too has it? Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

from the air. Garros took part in the world’s first endurance races; flying from Paris/London/ Paris he took second place. He also took part in a Paris-Madrid race. In Tennessee in 1912 he set an altitude record reaching 16,240 feet and smashing the previous record by over 2000 feet. The air was so thin the engine stalled yet he managed to glide safely back down to earth. In 1913 Garros made the first successful non-stop flight across the Mediterranean; he flew 500 miles from Frejus in Provence to Bizerte in Tunisia. Ironically when WWI broke out Garros was in Germany teaching military aviation. He flew at night to Switzerland then to France where he joined a French squadron nicknamed The Storks. At the beginning of the war planes were used for observation and opposing pilots if they met each other shook their fists at each other and glared menacingly. Later they took up bricks to drop on each other, revolvers were next. Natural escalation meant machine guns were then mounted on the sides

of the flimsy aircraft. The problem was that it was impossible to fire straight ahead as the propeller would be destroyed. Roland Garros had the idea of fitting steel deflectors on the blades to protect them from the bullets and mounted a machine gun behind. On April fool’s day 1915 he became the first person to shoot a plane down using a front mounted machine gun. Over the next fortnight he shot down four more German planes. An American Newspaper first used the term ‘Ace’ to celebrate his 5 kills. Garros’s luck soon ran out and he was forced to crash land behind enemy lines. He was captured before he could finish destroying his plane and he was interned as a POW. The deflectors were copied and added to German planes. Fokker also examined the aircraft as he was already working on a more efficient machine gun. Fokker’s ‘interrupter gear’ synchronised the firing of the machine gun to the turning of the propeller. It was added to German

fighter planes 3 months later with devastating effect. Garros managed to escape from the POW camp on Valentine’s Day 1918. He re-joined the French Army and flew again and had more kills. Then on October 5th a month before the end of hostilities, he himself was shot down and killed by German Ace Hermann Habich. It was the day before his 30th birthday. 10 years earlier whilst studying in Paris, Roland Garros regularly played tennis at the club which, in 1920 was named in his honour!

Bike Guide Camposol Camposol to Mazarron Town (not the port) Round trip 24 kilometers. Time about one hour to go and almost the same time to come back. This is probably the first trip with your bicycle that you would want to do out of Camposol area. There is no real preparation here, except if you plan to go on weekend, then take air pump with you in the case, although the gas stations on the way are open 7 days and for sure if it is hot just enough water. 1- Start from the roundabout of Consum and head south passing Banco Murcia, etc. 2- If you live in Sector “A”, you can also take your southbound service road but only up to the bridge and you need to cross the bridge. 3- You will approach two roundabouts. Before the second one you will see a dog Kennel and a truck parking area. 4- At round about after the kennel, cross the highway bridge and again on service road head south. 5- Pass two gas stations and when road ends, take left turn and keep on going south 6- Half kilometer after a roundabout, you have entered Mazarron. On the way back make sure you get

on service road, but not the highway when you exit town and also cross the highway after you passed the second gas station and by the bridge. Don’t go straight here as the service road is paved, but dead end. On the way back you do some difficult uphill. You may want to walk one of them IF it is too difficult. This is a paved road pass power station, just watch for coming downhill cars. Many things you may want to do in Mazarron. For example there are 2 bicycle shops. One is on the main street across the town gas station. The other one is hidden and you need good direction to get there (street next to tobacco shop going down; same side). After Citroen auto dealer, the Chinese store and dry cleaner, there is a small shop which offers internet access for currently one euro per hour. You drop a 50 cents in machine and you are set. It is fast connection. On Saturday in the morning to noon hours, there is a farmers market which is street across the Citroen and Chinese Store. Technically it is in the parking lot of DIA% supermarket.

The average rental price of housing in Spain fell by 0.7 % in the month of April compared with the same month last year, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute. Thus, rental prices have now accumulated thirteen consecutive months of declines. This decline in rental prices contrasts with the evolution of the overall CPI, which rose by 0.4% in April. El Mundo reported that, month-on-month, the cost of leasing remained stable and so far this year has declined by 0.3%, while year-on-year, fourteen regions recorded decreases in their rental prices.

Following the highly successful Charity Fun Day last November when over 2000 euros was raised for deserving local causes, centro comercial Rioja - situated in the heart of Orihuela Costa - is planning another Charity Fun Day, this time on Saturday 31st May. There will be live entertainment courtesy of the Sunshine FM roadshow, plus numerous charity stalls and events all over the complex, with the main charity benefitting from the day being Reach Out Torevieja. They are in desperate need of all sorts of items for babies and children; clothes, toys, shoes, baby food, baby toiletries and everything else for children of all ages. Plus any items of non perishable food, tins, cans, bottles etc which could be donated. The fun starts at 12 midday and will go on throughout the afternoon and early evening with all the bars and restaurants on cc Rioja open and participating, with a hog roast and barbeques for all to enjoy. If you run a charity and would like a stall on the day to help raise funds and awareness for your charity contact Neil at The IT Place or Graeme at Canal Print Rioja - both situated on the upper floor of the centre.

MARA dog RESCUE This is Lucy, she is approximately 10 months old, she is a little bundle of fun and extremely loving. Lucy and her sister Patch are both ready for the forever homes. They are very small dogs both spayed and inoculated. Both Lucy and Patch have Leishmania but have received the best treatment possible and now live with just a tablet a day. Dogs like these are sometimes hard to re home because of the stigma attached to Leishmania. Leishmania is caused by the bite of a mosquito and can cause the dog a lot of suffering but if caught in time and treated any dog can go on to live a normal life with the help of a little pill and a cost of approximately 3 euro a month. These little girls come with a lot of love and can be a loyal friend and companion for a number of years. If you are interested in either Lucy or Patch and would like to know more please contact Marion on 628 811 187 or Keith on 628 811 188.

Granny’s Hen Night You are all cordially invited to come along and enjoy the mad cap antics at Granny’s Hen Night, the latest play being performed The Actors Studio. Everyone has witnessed groups of females outrageously dressed go along from bar to bar to celebrate the finale days of freedom of the soon to be blushing bride. Hen nights have now become just as popular as stag nights and groups of young ladies are commonly seen setting out to paint the town pink. However, this phenomenon was not so common 20 or even 30 years ago and many ladies of a certain generation never engaged in the frolics that seem so normal for the bride to be and her friends. Many mothers and even grandmothers would have loved had a last fling with their mates just the same as many youngsters enjoy today. Well Granny’s Hen Night follows a group of pensioners who do exactly that.

Just imagine the issues raised by the family because granny wants to let her hair down and have a good time out with her mates by having the modern type of hen night she missed out on when she first got married many years ago. Not only does granny have to cope with her stuck up daughter criticising her but worst still her granddaughter. However our granny is determined to have a great time. Granny’s Hen Night is full of funny events not normally encountered on a typical hen party and promised to be a great night’s entertainment. Come along to the Casa de Cultura, San Miguel de Salinas on Saturday 28th or Sunday 2th June for a night full of fun and laughter. Tickets are available from Bargain Books San Miguel or call David on 966 704 097. The Actors Studio is proud to support AFC Alzheimer’s Association Torrevieja.

Rescued after being left to die, these little guys are being looked after by Sapphire, one of APAH’s cats as a foster mum. They can be reserved for when they are old enough to leave. To arrange to meet them and their foster mum, please contact Yvonne on 630 422 563.

film review

“ It’s not the children she comes to save. It’s their father. It’s YOUR father, Travers Goff.” Walt Disney had a testy relationship with author P.L.Travers, a pen name for Helen Goff. He was unflattering in his remarks concerning the writer of the Mary Poppins’ series. He used curmudgeonly and uncompromising, prim and sexagenarian. The film was inspired by true events and Emma Thompson’s depiction of Travers shows what an irritable, difficult person she was to work with. Disney approved the following lyrics parodying Pamela’s negativity: “My world was calm, wellordered, exemplary, then came this person, with chaos in her wake, And now my life’s ambitions go with one fell blow. It’s quite a bitter pill to take.” Eight books were written in the Mary Poppins’ series between 1934 to 1988. Walt Disney’s own daughters loved the series so much that he ( played by Tom Hanks) promised them he would make a movie out of the series. It took him 20 years before he achieved his ambition to obtain the screen rights to her books. In 1961 Travers is living in London, struggling financially. Diarmuid Russell, her agent advises her to go to Walt Disney’s studios to meet Disney. She is reluctant. If she agrees to his proposition it will mean the end of her financial worries. Most of the action covers those two turbulent weeks in Los Angeles revealing more of a petulant child than a friendly, sociable professional. Her scorn and disdain was evident with the team. She admitted that the only American she liked was her chauffeur! The film tries to show us some insight into her reluctance and unwillingness to allow Disney to use animation and to point the accusing finger at the father, Mr Banks. We see frequent flashbacks of the young Helen growing up in Allora, Queensland

Saving Mr Banks

very close to her father, Travers Robert Goff (played by Colin Farrell) an alcoholic. She was devastated by his death and her mother’s attempt to commit suicide. Mr Banks draws strong parallels with her own father and Travers had problems with how Banks was going to be depicted. Once Disney realises just how personal the Mary Poppins’ stories are to Travers he opens up to her about his own difficult childhood. When she refuses to sign she leaves L.A. and returns to London. Disney is so determined that he follows her to London and persuades her to change her mind. “George Banks and all he stands for will be saved. maybe not in life, but in imagination. Because that’s what we storytellers do. We restore order with imagination. We instill hope again and again and again.” By saving or redeeming the father, Mr Banks, it was just like cherishing the memory of her own father and saving his reputation. The project goes ahead and Travers invites herself to the American premiere with very mixed feelings. Initial scorn is soon replaced by dismay when she sees Dick Van Dyke dancing with the penguins and we see her crying her heart out at the end; George Banks’ redemption has a powerful

and personal significance to her. Critics believed it may have been a show of anger towards the treatment of her characters and the sense of betrayal. Others believe it was the sadness of losing her own father. Annie Rose Buckley plays the young Travers, a delightful child, happy and imaginative until she becomes serious and worried over her father. Meryl Streep was the first choice although no-one could have portrayed her as well as Emma Thompson who described her as complex and full of contradiction, a very sad woman. She admitted to finding the role one of the most difficult she has had to act and yet she received a BAFTA, a Golden Globe and an SAG award for her role. The film romanticizes the Disney-Travers relationship. A proposed sequel did not materialize before Disney’s death in 1966. Travers refused to allow any of the other books in the series to be adapted by the Walt Disney Company. The film was director by John Lee Hancock ( The Blind Side ) and shot at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. At the end of the film a surviving reading of the actual sessions between Travers and the team is played out. Winds in the east, mist coming in, like something is brewing, about to begin, can’t put my fingers on what lies in store, but I feel what’s to happen, all happened before. pause for thought I recently read an account of an elderly American Indian, who, when asked by his grandson about the conflict and discord in the world today, reflected for a moment and then replied, “My child, there are two dogs battling within my heart. One is full of anger, hatred, and rage. The other is full of love, forgiveness, and peace.” The old man paused, and he and his grandson sat for a moment in silence. Finally the boy spoke, “Grandfather, which dog will win the battle in your heart? The one filled with hatred or the one filled with love?” The old man looked at his grandson and replied, “The one I feed will win.”’ A poignant story, but one with lessons we should all take to heart. For all of us, if we’re honest, have those two dogs battling within. We all, I’m sure, know times when we’re filled with love and a willingness to forgive others. But we all, no doubt also know times when anger and hatred take over our lives. And so the question is “which of these sides of our personality do we feed?” for that is the side most likely to win in that inner battle. How easy it is for us to feed our hearts with resentment and anger when others belittle or hurt us. And how much damage that causes as we become increasingly the slaves of that anger. Yet how much better and more at peace with ourselves we would feel if only we could instead feed our hearts with love and forgiveness in such circumstances, learning from the incredible example of Jesus. For even when suffering the most dreadful of deaths, his final words were of forgiveness, not revenge as he said “Father forgive them, for they don’t know what they’re doing.” So let’s pray that like him, we may never seek retaliation against those who insult us, nor revenge against those who hurt us, but leave all in the hands of God the true and perfect judge. simply was not worth the effort to ask ‘Why? It’s a buffet, and the table is laid up, so what difference does it make?’ The next evening we gave him a break – we ate out! The following morning, having given him a chance to mellow, we entered the breakfast room and scanned it for a non-controversial table at which we might sit without incurring his displeasure. As we stood, indecisive, he sailed up to Pete, and greeted him with a suave ‘Good morning, Mr Connor.’ If he was intending to direct us to a table he was a beat too late – Pete had already set course for a table at which our friends were seated, and which was, presumably, ‘acceptable’, so he turned his attention to me. ‘Good morning, lady.’ I favoured him with the sort of smile that a large crocodile gives a small crocodile, just before it pinches the small crocodile’s lunch, and followed in Pete’s wake, a tender to his battleship!

Don’t Cross Me, I’m Special Forces

Driving the relatively short distance from Playa Flamenca post office to home the other day, I encountered people on every single one of the many pedestrian crossings en route. This is unusual but not a problem, I am happy to stop as often as required. I do it with good grace and with a smile on my face; after all I am rarely in a hurry and have time on my hands to spare most of the time. But it illustrated in a small way just how most Brits are different from many of our foreign cousins. My first stop was for a tall lady dressed in a revealing tee shirt and tight sporty cut-offs bearing a Volvo motif. She had long blond hair plaited like a braided loaf and wore puzzlingly, what looked like fingerless driving gloves. She had an impressive physique with muscular arms and thighs and walked with the aid of two ski poles. I was guessing Scandinavian - I have an uncanny instinct for accurately spotting these things – and she strode across the road, pausing only to glare at me with a look that said, ‘Rev that engine and I’ll strangle you with your own intestines’. Only a hundred metres further on, I encountered a Spanish man carrying a briefcase and with a mobile phone glued to his ear. He wore a polo shirt and

jeans that looked as if they had seen better days, so obviously a business man, or council official, or doctor maybe. I received another scowl before he crossed in front of me and I started to wonder whether it was my car that seemed to attract so much disfavour, after all I was showing no impatience or bad humour. In fact I was thinking pleasant thoughts about how to spend the money I was going to win on Euro Millions that evening, having stopped off and purchased five lucky dips. With such a level of investment, I was bound to come up trumps. It was a different matter a bit further on when three young Chinese men, positively sprinted across the road as if their life depended on it. Perhaps they’d had a bad experience at some time in the past when a Spanish shop keeper who was brassed off with yet another Chinese emporium opening up in his territory with the unfair competition that comes with it, tried to run them down. But for whatever reason, they were gone in a flash, leaving the stripey asphalt smoking – I had hardly brought the car to a halt. On the next three crossings, there were groups of people, who honoured me with looks that ranged from disdain to outright aggression, including one shaven headed moron who favoured me with an extended tongue, which I noticed had a piece of shrapnel embedded in it. Obviously a war wound picked up in a bar somewhere. In all cases and unlike the Chinese athletes, they moved across the road at the pace of English trains when there are non-approved leaves on the line. To say

it was leisurely would be a serious misappropriation of the English language; I half expected some of them to set up a table and start dispensing drinks and sandwiches. It seemed to represent a statement of complete contempt for the motorists who had come to a halt on both sides of the road, and even a veiled challenge . . . ‘Go on, ‘onk yer ‘orn if you fink you’re ‘ard enough!’ Or whatever the translation would be. I had decided to give my air-con a rest and had my windows down, so with the exception of super tongue, I knew they were not Brits. I am not an expert, but the chatter sounded vaguely Eastern European to me, although it could have been Tibetan for all I knew, but the sight of strange tattooed writing in Cyrillic letters on some of the forearms of one of the groups, had me thinking of ex-Russian Spetsnaz special forces. I was already on the run from the Triads for taking a faulty light bulb back to our local Oriental bazaar and demanding my money back, so I was not going to add to my troubles by upsetting these men with muscles in their spit. On the final crossing before home, an elderly couple were waiting patiently on the side of the road, so of course I brought the car to a stop and signalled with a wave that they could cross, and as they did so they smilingly waved back, with the lady mouthing the words, ‘Thank you.’ They were Brits of course. And by and large I have found this to be true; that it is invariably us older Brits who show our appreciation for courtesy rendered.

You Can’t Sit There The barman queried with a drawl ‘whaddya want, lady?’ I glanced round quickly, fearing that I had slipped through a time/space warp and landed in a Clint Eastwood western, but was reassured to find that I was still in the Hotel Macia Alfaros in Córdoba in the year 2014. Having ordered we sat ourselves at the only free table, on the left hand side of the half hectare of floor space that is the bar area. We chose our desired supper from the menu on the table, and for the next 20 minutes were assiduously ignored by the barman – no amount of discrete menu-waving would bring him to our

viewpoint Dolores’s find

alqueria

Only three properties stand on the western side of the Calle Mirador, Poyato’s smallholding, the junior school and a small run-down dwelling boasting no electricity, piped water or mains drainage. This is the home of Dolores Basco or La Mojigata as she is known throughout Alqueria. Her simple lifestyle is an echo of her beliefs. She eats only home-grown vegetables, attends church regularly, takes plenty of exercise and washes in ice cold water. She has kept herself pure and chaste in thought and deed, no mean feat in hedonistic Alqueria. The day started like all that went before, there was no warning that it could be any different. Dolores was tending her vegetable patch at the rear of her garden when she came across some very strange objects. Some were leather, some metal and others wooden. They were definitely very old but the preservative quality of Alquerian soil is renown. The bad drainage is believed to be mainly responsible. They were in the region of two hundred millimetres or so in length, tube-like with fixing points for buckles or thongs at one end and enclosed at the other. Taking one of the objects in her purist of hands she carried it carefully to Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido the Village Priest for identification. The good Priest was quick to enlighten Dolores. They were in fact fifteenth century codpieces. Now Dolores didn’t know what a codpiece was yet alone what was kept inside one. On hearing exactly what the objects were and their function she stood horrified staring at her now not so pure hands. The Priest explained. In 1492 the

Christian Reconquest bypassed Alqueria because it was such an obnoxious place full of offensive dysfunctional people. It was never absorbed into Spain. In order for Isabella and Ferdinand to pay for their Reconquest, expensive things reconquests they imposed a very hefty tax on codpieces. A smugglers’ trail was soon set-up into Alqueria via what is now Dolores’s back garden. Making codpieces became the main industry of Alqueria during this period. Men would cross into Alqueria wearing their old or unwanted codpieces, buy a new one, minus the ‘Reconquest Tax’ then return via the smugglers’ route. Just before crossing back into Spain they would jettison the old codpiece and don the new. Using this strategy they couldn’t be charged duty if stopped at the border. The jettison zone was Dolores’s back yard. The mental images conjured up by untold numbers of men exposing their manhood where she had just planted her onions was too much for poor Dolores. She went into a dead faint but with the strangest of smiles on her usually solemn countenance

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

Bonalba - 14.05.14 There is an old saying that when the cat’s away the mice will play, well with both the Captain and the Vice Captain away play we did play, at the verdant course of Bonalba. It really looked good, well watered and nice greens and the organization there is second to none. Our lowest handicapper, Ray Moles almost got a hole in one on the par 3 eleventh, his ball skimming the hole to stop six inches away, someone suggested that he missed the putt, but I am happy to report he did not. Although the skies were overcast with rainy mist in the air and hardly any wind on most holes, it was a perfect day for playing golf. Our thanks go to Brian Smith who did a sterling job of starting us off and as you will read below, he did a sterling job on the course as well. Gold Division: 1st Brian Smith 32pts, 2nd Brian Coultate 30pts and 3rd Ray Brown 29pts Silver Division: 1st Mike Cutts 33pts, 2nd Alan Crain 32pts and 3rd Stan Earl 30pts Bronze Division: 1st Steve Harrington 27pts, 2nd Paul Carter 26pts and 3rd Margaret Obrien 25pts (c/b) NTPs: Brian Smith holes 4 and 14, Dicky Claeys hole 8, Ray Moles hole 11. The 2s pot was shared by Rod Day and Ray Moles. Alan Crains number was pulled out for the free game next time. Our next game is at Roda for the Spring Cup on the 28th May, see you there.

El Plantio 2 Golf Society

This week we decided to have a Texas Scramble, with a good turnout of 21 players we settled for 7 teams of 3 players each with expectations of some good scores. My team consisted of Mel and Gordon (brandy) Wayne and it all looked good until we scored two over on one hole, that was just enough to push us into 3rd place, ah well, better luck next time. The results this week: Nearest the pin hole 1: Kenny Reddington, Hole 6: George Stanhope 3rd place John O’Brien, Mel Hope & Gordon Wayne with a nett 50.67 2nd place Kenny Reddington, Elsa Webster & Gordon Abba with a nett 50.16 1st place Dave Smith, Lawrence Wanty & Ray Housley with a nett 48.72 The next competition is on 20th May at El Plantio. SMGS visit BELLAVISTA It’s often been said, especially by me, that there’s a few courses just over the Murcia border that can leave you with the distinct impression that you play several of the holes more than once! Well, we’ve also got one a lot nearer to home which doesn’t disguise the fact that it’s only got 11 holes, seven of which you get another chance at finding out where you went wrong the first time! Bellavista is well flagged up just off the Orihuela road outside San Miguel & it’s a good test for any standard of golfer with the accurate ones usually coming out on top. After having a couple of tries at some of the holes you’ll also find the sensible prices at the “apres golf” are a good reason for going back for seconds & thirds at the friendly bar. NTP’s were awarded to Ali Grimsley (4), Steve Fleet (8) & John Drakesmith (15). A very good tally of 35 points ensured that Donal Murphy took the day’s guest prize back to the Emerald Isle! Two members, not in the other prizes, picked up 2 special awards for the day’s best front 9 &

back 9. They were Ken Flaherty (17 on the front) & Ken Wraithmell (19 on the back). It should be mentioned that the “driving” award of the day, if there had been one that is, would definitely have gone to Roger Webb whose antics involving the entanglement of a poor harmless tree with his formula one buggy left Roger crying out for some recognition! Top 3 in the bronze division in ascending order were Norman McBride (35), Norman Padmore (36) & Glen Rapley (39). Silver’s winners were Alan Gilbert (34), Capt Steve Davis (35) & Ron Stenhouse (37). The 3 top “golden” boys were Ivan Hanak (33), John Drakesmith (34) & Steve Fleet, once again with top score of the day (40). Very well done to all in the prizes. TMGS Match Report, La Finca, 14th May 2014. Today in 1894, Blackpool Tower was first opened to the public who paid a tanner (6d) entrance fee and another tanner for the use of the lift to the top. Also on this day, Mick Kennedy was the only Member to break his handicap on a well presented course but tricky/slow/bumpy greens of La Finca. La Finca, one of the most popular courses in this area saw 40 members and guests of the Society tee off into a slight breeze and with clouds threatening some of the wet falling down stuff, but I am pleased to say that the rain stayed away. Only 3 of the 4 NTP’s were won and the recipients of TMGS golf balls were Paula Hagart; Kjell Aaesbo and Pauling Johnson. Also recipients of a sleeve of logo balls for their “two’s” were Joe Dean and Arne Hansson. Mickie Noble once again secured the Guest prize and I have heard a whisper (more like a war cry) of a cut to his handicap for the next time he plays with us. He

also won yesterday with the Bog Road society and fellow Bog Road’er Ernie Wilson is going to supply him with a mask for his next game. The Silver Division was ably won by Mick Kennedy with 38 points which was 7 points clear of runner-up and 3rd places with 31 points with John Hagart claiming 2nd ahead of Peter Johnson on the count-back system. 4th place went to Peter’s wife, Pauline with 30 points. The Gold Division lads fared slightly better and the winner of this Division was Alan Rickers with 35 points, one ahead of Dag Lovas on 34 points for 2nd spot. 5 players tied for 3rd and 4th spots and once again, the count-back system was employed and in 3rd place with 33 points was Arne Hansson and 4th was Paula Hagart with 33 points. Though course maintenance had recently been going on it did not stop some good scores being recorded on a course which is the longest here in this part of Spain. There were no significant things

to report other than it was good to see one of the first members to join TORREGOLF.EU, returning to play once again after 3 years, glad to see you Tony (Rudd) and that at long last your knee is now or should I say nearly 100 per cent better.
