Busters Bar

ort Staff and customers in a bar in Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre, Orihuela Costa, remembered a former regular this week, when they donated 100 euros to the charity Help at Home Costa Blanca. Harry Parker, who was aged in his early 70s, was a customer of Buster´s Bar for nine years, and regularly joined friends to take part in the weekly bar quiz. But he suffered from diabetes and was in and out of Torrevieja Hospital. He lived next door to Norah Bond, the past president of the charity, who kept a watchful eye over him for years. He went back to the UK, where he died last December. Regulars at the bar had a collection

in his memory and raised 100 euros. His daughter wanted the money to be donated to the charity. Bar owner, Paul Hallett, said: “Because of the turmoil within the charity and there was a dispute as to who was the lawful president, we decided to hold the money until it was resolved. “We are delighted that the dispute is now over and we can hand the money over to the legitimate charity,” he added. Photo: Paul Hallett, owner of Buster´s Bar, presents the 100 euros to Eileen Mayes, president of Help at Home Costa Blanca joined by members of Harry Parker´s quiz team.

Do you chop people’s heads off? Our Group will be running our next 2 day camera course for DSLR and bridge cameras at La Herradura Restaurant (next to the REPSOL garage in Los Montesinos) 17th & 18th June where you can learn how to avoid taking unintentionally hilarious or otherwise embarrassing photos. So if you don’t understand all the menus and functions on your camera, maybe you should consider coming along. We will be running our next one-day course for owners of compact cameras, also at La Herradura, on Wednesday 25th June. Photography is a wonderful hobby

for everyone, and the members of our group enjoy the monthly meetings, the drink afterwards, and the various trips we take to different locations to take pictures. We also have guest speakers on all aspects of photography. The next meeting is at La Herradura on Tuesday 10th June, starting at 10.30am until lunchtime. Why not come along and find out more about us. We are a friendly group, and you will receive a warm welcome. For more information visit www.photogenics-cb.net or call David on 649 613 517.

Age Concern Summer Fair Saturday 7th June was sunny and warm for the annual Age Concern Summer Fair. The Fair was well attended with people picking up bargains galore whilst listening to music provided by Geoff’s “Old School Sounds”. The magnificent sum of 3,675 Euros was raised which is the best yet for this event. The President of Age Concern, Maureen Payne, would like to thank the numerous people who donated prizes and all of the volunteers and helpers for making the day a huge success.

APAH Spring Fair at Iceland

On Saturday 24th May, APAH held a Spring Fair on the Car Park at Iceland (San Javier). The event is part of Iceland’s year long sponsorship of APAH. Along with APAH’s stalls; run by hardworking and dedicated volunteers, there were 15 local business, who set up stalls; selling jewellery, crafts, shoes, pet collars, hats and representatives from Avalon and de Vere, offering advice and expertise. Suzie, one of the lovely ladies from Iceland was also there with her ‘nail art’, painting the nails of people lucky enough to have them! Derek, also from Iceland offered to be there on his day off, cooking sausage muffins, and along with Ian from APAH, who provided hot coffees (and music), kept stall holders and Iceland customers happy. There was a slight blip when the rain threatened to dampen the spirits of the people involved, but luckily it didn’t amount to anything serious. There were some great Raffle prizes, donated by local businesses, Iceland and APAH, and every winner was contacted on the day, and if they weren’t already at the event, were invited to come along to the store to collect their prize. With close to 650 euros raised, APAH and Iceland consider the event a great success, and want to thank everyone who got involved for their hard work on the day. They would also like to offer their thanks and appreciation to all the Iceland customers who contribute to the donation tins held on the tills and the trolley used to collect the dog and cat food which is regularly donated by customers.

n e d r a G me & o H The Vega Baja Garden Club

Ron Harris opened the June meeting of the Garden Club, welcoming all. The recent trip to visit the patio gardens in Cordoba had been thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who went, and Ron thanked Mary Priddle for arranging it. Ron went on to remind everyone of the jobs that should be attended to this month, it is important to keep up feeding and to increase watering at this time of year. This is a good time to take cuttings for propagation, and also to sow seeds such as pansies and calendula for a continuous show of flowers. Carole Williams, a member of the Garden Club, gave an entertaining talk about the many uses to which lemons can be put, including several methods of preserving the fruits and juice. She shared her family recipe for lemon squash and brought in a flask of it for members to sample. This was very well received. Carole also suggested several unusual ideas for using lemon juice as a household cleaner, and members were interested to try out her products at the end of the meeting.

white, waxy fragrant flowers, which can be floated in water to make unusual displays. The second plant was the Bird of Paradise Tree. This lovely tree can manage in a large pot and produces abundant, showy, bird like yellow blossoms with long red stamens. The third plant, Vigna Caracolla, is a vigorous climber with soft green foliage. It enjoys full sun and rich soil. The fragrant flowers are replicas of snail shells, and are attractive to butterflies and birds. At first the blooms are white, but change colour, first to lilac and then to a creamy yellow, making the vine a very appealing addition to the garden. Jacqui’s fourth plant was the Natal Plum which came originally from South Africa. It is easy to grow, being tolerant of wind and salty air. It bears glossy green leaves, delicate white fragrant flowers and a dark red edible plum like fruit, which can be used to make jam.

Reject chain store conformity in favour of creating unique pieces that express your personality! Why spend a fortune in furniture stores when all you really need to give old furniture a stylish revamp is a glue gun and a bit of imagination? There’s something very satisfying about rescuing furniture, or giving your own furniture a facelift. And when you’re done, you can sit back and bask in the good karma that comes from helping to make the world a slightly less wasteful, profligate place. Here are a few simple tips and ideas to get you started: Gilt-y pleasures…

Sticky business…

Auction houses are full of expensive antique mirrors and pictures with distressed, flaky gilt frames. This aged effect is easy to achieve at home with gilding liquid or wax, available at most art and craft shops. Paint your existing mirror or picture frame (it works best on carved or ornamental frames) with the liquid and wait for it to dry. Then use a shoe polish brush to tone down the finish and sandpaper to create that worn, antique look.

Découpage is a craft technique that produces professional-looking results from very little effort on your part. If you know how to cut out pieces of paper and glue them onto surfaces you’re half-way there already. All that’s left is to choose what paper and what surfaces you’re going to use. Wrapping paper, magazine cuttings or pages from old comics make great decorative patterns. You can use the technique on coffee tabletops, glass bowls, boxes and vases. As long as the surfaces are smooth and regular, the possibilities are endless

Let there be light… Plain lampshades can be blank canvasses for creative expression. Measure and cut out a translucent coloured fabric covering and attach it with a glue gun, or stick on strips of wood grain paper. For a finishing touch, choose a ribbon of a matching colour and glue around the top and bottom rim of the lampshade.

Patch it up… You’ll be surprised how easily a few judiciously applied buttons, patches or pieces of fabric can give your cushions a facelift. Choose fabrics with colours that go well with the cushion covers, sew them in place with chunky, contrasting

thread, or just use a glue gun if you’re feeling really lazy. Keep your colour palette limited and don’t go overboard with how many bits and pieces you attach. As ever, with this type of exercise, less is definitely more.

Easy upholstery… Transform simple wooden cafe chairs with detachable seats with a funky new seat covering. Charity shops and auction sites like eBay are good sources of fabulously retro fabrics too! It couldn’t be simpler.

Bedroom bling… Wallpaper doesn’t just belong on walls, you can use it to transform the dowdiest wardrobe or chest of drawers into pieces that will bring a touch of glamour to any contemporary boudoir. Remove any knobs or handles, give the front of your drawers or doors a light sanding and apply the wallpaper (you’ll need to take the

drawers out of the chest and cut out the paper accurately to give you a professional, continuous finish). Paint the sides of the chest or the wardrobe in a colour that matches at least one of the shades in your wallpaper. For the most stylish results, use a wallpaper with bold, graphic patterns.

Occupation Licenses in Alicante by Martinez de la Casa Architects

An Occupation License is a document broadly used by Townhalls in Alicante for several issues. Currently the submission (registration receipt) of having applied for an Occupation License (not the license itself), is required to sign for a property sale at any Notary within Alicante. The document, also called Habitation License or Habitation Cedule, is required in other regions too, to deal with electricity contracts or arrange water supplies. This document/receipt is achieved by submitting a dossier with the compilation of the Title Deeds, water and electricity bills, annual Townhall tax, and NIE, one or more certificates by an Architect and sometimes complete plans of the property. Requirements

vary widely among municipalities. Martinez de la Casa Architects offer this dossier service to obtain the registration receipt/application for the Occupation License in all Alicante, Murcia and Almeria. Prices subject to different Townhalls. If you contract our services, Martinez de la Casa Architects will accurately quote according to your Townhall and make an appointment to visit the property, measuring if necessary and compiling all dossier paperwork. We deliver the package in 7/10 working days and you will receive your stamped receipt from the Townhall within 7/10 working days. The Townhall will take an indefinite time to issue the License (can be months), notifying you by letter and ordinarily requesting any of the property details to be updated. However, to sell your home in Alicante, the Notary only ask for proof of having applied for the Second Occupation License, therefore our service is sufficient to carry out the sale. Heat exhaustion and Heatstroke

Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are two heatrelated health conditions. If they’re not quickly treated, they can both be very serious. Heat exhaustion

Who’s at risk?

working.

Heat exhaustion can occur when the temperature inside the body (the core temperature) rises to anything between the normal 37°C (98.6°F) up to 40°C (104°F).

The symptoms of heatstroke can include:

At this temperature, the levels of water and salt in the body begin to fall, which can cause a person to feel sick, feel faint and sweat heavily.

• loss of consciousness

If a person with heat exhaustion is taken quickly to a cool place, is given water to drink and has their excess clothing removed, they should begin to feel better within half an hour and have no long-term complications. Without treatment, they could develop heatstroke. Certain groups are more at risk of developing heatstroke or suffering complications from dehydration, and should be taken to hospital. This includes:

Heatstroke can affect anyone, but some people are more at risk than others and should take extra precautions during warm weather, especially during a heatwave. These include:

If left untreated, it can lead to complications, such as organ failure and brain damage. Some people die from heatstroke.

• the elderly • babies and young children •p eople with conditions that affect the body’s ability to cool down, such as diabetes • t hose who have drunk too much alcohol (which dehydrates the body) •p eople on certain drugs and medications, such as antipsychotics and betablockers •p eople who might find it difficult to keep cool during a heatwave – for example, those who are bed-bound or disabled. Avoiding heat exhaustion and heatstroke There are steps you can take to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke; •S tay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, particularly between 11am and 3pm. • I f you have to go out in the heat, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat. •D on’t leave anyone in a parked car. •A void extreme physical exertion. •H ave plenty of cold drinks, but avoid drinks that contain caffeine and alcohol. • E at cold foods, particularly salads and fruit with a high water content. • T ake a cool shower, bath or body wash. •S prinkle water over your skin or clothing, or keep a damp cloth on the back of your neck. •K eep your environment cool.

• mental confusion • r apid shallow breathing (hyperventilation) What to do Heatstroke is a medical emergency and should be treated immediately. Phone the Angels or 112 for an ambulance. While you’re waiting for an ambulance to arrive, make sure that the person is as cool as possible. Move them to a cool area as quickly as possible, remove excess clothing and try to cool them by fanning them. If they’re conscious, give them cool, not cold, water to drink.

• children under two years old • very elderly people •p eople with problems

kidney,

heart

or

circulation

•p eople with diabetes who use insulin Heatstroke Heatstroke is far more serious than heat exhaustion. It occurs when the body can no longer cool itself and starts to overheat. When the core temperature rises above 40°C (104°F) the cells inside the body begin to break down and important parts of the body stop

SOLTIMES june 2014

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Do you use yahoo mail? Have you gotten used to all the adverts sitting on the right hand side of the screen and mastered the art of ignoring them? Have you seen the new advertising trick of sticking it at the top of your inbox and there being no way to remove them? Panic not! There is a way of getting rid of this new advertising trick and it’s simplicity itself! First, who’s brainstorm first created such a Frankenstein’s monster? Well last week when I came across this problem for the first time, I found that yahoo on July 16, 2012, named former Google executive Marissa Mayer (hereafter know as ‘The Bitch’) as Yahoo CEO and President, and it is her we have to thank for this new and invasive form of advertising. Like all good little Geeks, I wasn’t at all happy with the basic information provided and decided to dig a little deeper. First problem I found was you could not delete it from your Inbox as the delete option had been greyed out and therefore no longer worked. Having tried a number of browsers and finding the same problem in all of them, I decided to get “down and dirty”. I checked the source code for the web page! Every web-page is, in truth, a list of commands in a specific programming language (HTML), and can be read if you know what to look for. Yahoo has included the code for the advertising, in this page. You can remove it but only until the page is refreshed and oops – there it is again! Doing anything (deleting emails and changing folders are most common) will force the page to refresh. Then I tried the ‘normal’ route of going to their help section to ‘Opt-out’ of the advertising. Even after

following their instructions to the letter, the little ‘So and So’ was still there, although most of the other advertising had been replaced with All New Advertising. It was then I found out that Google (Gmail) read your mail to find out what your preferences are and send you specific advertising to match what they think you will want to see – how thoughtful! Now “The Bitch” has moved from google to yahoo and brought her bad habits with her! So you can expect more of the same. After several hours trawling the net, I found the ‘Authorised’ solution to this problem - PAY! For $50 a year and you wont have any adverts. In another world, this would be called ‘RansomWare and have everyone ‘up in arms’. You are then told that you had 3 choices: Pay (preferred); ‘ Shut Up and Put Up’ or find another Email provider – hows that for arrogance? I no longer have a yahoo account and would not recommend them to anyone! They have now lost the potential to earn from me and anyone who chooses to follow my lead. Now for the solution that you have waded through this article for. I said at the start that is was simple. Well here it is – ‘ADBLOCKER’! Download and install it (yes – it is free!!!) and restart your browser. So far this has worked on every example of this problem to-date. So good luck and enjoy advert free internet! I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! I’m looking at starting a clinic in Los Gallardos Village. Send me your thoughts through the usual channels. Have a great week.

The Mighty Minnows With the World Cup now in full swing one team are not only absent but also ineligible; Gibraltar! They gained however full membership of UEFA last May despite opposition from Spain and strangely Belarus. Spain opposed not only because they claim sovereignty of Gibraltar but they fear precedence will be set and the Basque region and Catalonia may also apply to have teams recognised. Then players could refuse to play for the Spanish side. Mind you after the 5-1 drubbing by Holland at the weekend, perhaps the 5 Barcelona players on the pitch would have been better deployed playing for a regional Catalan side. After last Saturdays result I pray that Rooney will soon rediscover his Basque ancestry. UEFA membership means that Gibraltar start the qualification process for the 2016 ‘Euros’ in Group D. They should easily walk the group with only Germany, Poland, Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Georgia standing in their way. Gibraltar were originally drawn in Spain’s group but to

braben’s blog... The Final Frontier

The Solar System is pretty big, especially when compared to, let’s say, the parking space you try to squeeze into outside the bank when it’s too hot to walk further than you have to. But, no matter how big it is, we manage to find ways of leaving our mark there, or at least our rubbish. Obviously NASA has done its bit by managing to leave bits of rockets all over the place up there. To try to get an idea of what it must look like, just think of your lounge floor on Christmas morning when it’s full of bits of wrapping paper and the odd broken toy and you can’t put your foot down on an uncluttered bit of the carpet. That’s pretty much what space is like-but without Jonah Louie! Now a company is trying to do the same to the Moon. There’s already a bit of rubbish on the Moon, left behind by the twelve American chaps who have been for a stroll there and then there’s the odd but of mangled metal from other landings over the years. In fact, when you think about it, as Cilla Black may once have said, that’s a lorra lorra litter. But now there’s going to be even more. A Japanese drinks firm is planning to add more superfluous stuff. They’re not sending astronauts up there to conduct vital scientific experiments for the good of mankind. No, they’ve decided on something much more important. They’re going to advertise on the Moon by sending, at vast expense, a can of their soft drink up there. I’m confused. I thought advertising aimed to reach as many people as possible so customers would buy shed loads of whatever they wanted to sell us. Isn’t advertising on the Moon a little like paying for an advert on, say, Channel 5? Nobody will see it and anyone who does probably isn’t in a fit state to take it in anyway. The company are hoping to encourage Japanese youngsters to become astronauts so they’ll get the chance to go there and enjoy the can of drink that has been festering up there for years. Yep, that would do it I’m sure! If they were so desperate for the drink, wouldn’t the local supermarket be closer? Nevertheless, we should be so proud that we’re finally putting our fantastically advanced intelligence to such good use… but then again..? Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. If you wish to contact Graham regarding this article email: helenandg@yahoo.co.uk

placate the delicate right wing sensitivities of the Spanish FA and the ruling PP, they were transferred with a new rule drawn up so that they cannot play each other in the group stages. The current Victoria Stadium (5000 capacity) near the airport is not permitted to be used so their qualifying home games will be played a few hours’ drive west in the Algarve, Portugal. Their first game is against Poland on 7th September. A new stadium is under construction in Gibraltar at Europa Point with a capacity enough to seat a third of the population – so 10,000 seats exactly. Gibraltar with a population of 30,000 are UEFA’s smallest federation, just pipping the likes of San Marino (34,500), Liechtenstein (36,000) and Faroe Islands (50,000). For Irish and Scottish football fans based in Spain, instead of heading north to Dublin or Glasgow to see the national teams next year; why not go west to Faro Portugal. The games are 4th September

and 11th October respectively. I hear the golf is good too. Before membership of UEFA, Gibraltar had participated in a few football competitions that most of us may have missed as they weren’t beamed out live by Sky Sports. The Island Games in 1993 started in the Isle of Man as a one-off completion that is now held every 2 years. The only requirement for entry to the Island Games is funnily enough being an island. As many people (including my mother) think Gibraltar is an island their lie was believed on the entry form. But, they finished last by losing all their matches. 1n 1995 the Games were hosted by Gibraltar and this time things went much better. Although they lost the opener against Greenland they beat the mighty Anglesey and then Jersey. Unfortunately they lost the final 1-0 to those football heavyweights the Isle of White. In 2007 they were victors beating such illustrious opponents along the way as Menorca, Bermuda

and trounced Rhodes 4-0 in the final. Not only a favourite dogs name but FIFI was a tournament for non FIFA members held in 2006. The likes of Tibet, Zanzibar and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus battled it out in Hamburg where the hosts the Republic of St. Paulii (a punkish left wing team) are based. Of the 6 teams present Gibraltar made the last four, thrashing Tibet 5-0 along the way. As the average attendance was just 400 spectators I think poor FIFI will have to wait a long time for another walk. Eligibility to play in the Gibraltar side is open to anyone that’s ever visited on a cruise liner, served there in the armed forces or shopped at Morrisons. In truth, having Gibraltarian parents or grandparents, being born there or attended a local school for 5 years is enough. Come on Gibraltar!

JAGUARS

JEC Spain, 3rd Anniversary

“Little Pussycats all in a Row” Written by Eric Arnold The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain celebrated it’s 3rd Anniversary on the 8th June, I cannot believe it is three years since I started the club. May I take this opportunity to thank all those people that have supported the club through the years, and a very special thank you to Ian McMenemy, our Events Director for the sterling work he does organising all of our meetings. This special celebratory event started at Restaurant Los Almendros in Torrelano where most of the members met for some light refreshments then, with “all the Big Cats” in a row, we commenced the cruise through the beautiful Spanish country side to Restaurant Nugolat, located just outside Elche on the Carretera Dolores, Km 5. On the way we stopped once for a photo opportunity, the big cats did look impressive against the back drop of grape vines. Arriving at Restaurant Nugolat was a great surprise, beautiful gardens, great parking and the dining room allocated to us was just superb and if that was not good enough, as usual we had a fabulous sunny day. On arrival, most people congregated outside on the terrace for a few drinks and a chance to catch up with old friends and to meet new members. We sat down for lunch just before 2:00pm in a private function room in which the tables had been set “to the nines”; I have seen wedding receptions with tables not decorated as well as these, they were incredible. I had high hopes for the rest of the day; I was not to be disappointed. The feast commences. To start, fresh bread, garlic and tomato, a plate of succulent ham and Manchego cheese, a crisp smoked salmon salad and baby squid in a light tempura coating, some of the best I have ever had, fabulous. This was followed by hot ham and potato croquets. On offer for the main course were two types of Paella, Fish, lamb chops or solomillo of pork in a light mushroom sauce, my choice, tender succulent, melt in the mouth. Dessert was ice cream and what I can only describe as a superb cream topped rum baba. Drinks a plenty accompanied this delicious feast, unlimited wine, beers, water and coffee all for 25.00 Euros a head, fantastic value for money. I have to compliment the staff and the management at Restaurant Nugolat, the service and the food were exceptional. Outside for coffee and in my case a nice cigar, if that is not nice enough, the restaurant brought out plates of hot sugar coated churro’s (like donuts). We will be going back to Restaurant Nugolat in the future I can assure you. A quick get together for the “group photo” in the gardens then back to the terrace, for a little more light refreshment. May I take this opportunity to thank all

the members that attended especially the new members and the members that bought guests, bringing the total to 44 people and 15 cars which included a stunning new XJ, a number of XK8’s, XJS’s, XJ’s, S types and many more. The meeting also held another surprise, apparently, in recognition of my hard work in forming and running the club, my good friend and the club’s Event Director, Ian McMenemy organised a beautiful gift of a pristine white JEC shirt and a Jaguar XK8 key ring and pen. I was delighted and surprised. I must also mention Brian Patterson who kindly donated, wine, whiskey, chocolates and cakes as raffle prizes, he even brought the raffle tickets with him, what a great gesture, we raised just over 100.00 Euros which will greatly help with the costs of running the club. Thank you Brian. At the end of the meeting we presented Vincente, one of Nugolats management with a JEC plaque recognising there efforts in making it such a great day. A great meal, brilliant company, lazing in the warm air more coffee, liqueurs for the non drivers but eventually it was time to go - just an exceptional day, why not come and join us at our next meeting on the 27th July. We have something special organised for later in the year, in October, a 2 day Magical Mystery Tour, I only announced this a couple of weeks ago and it is already over subscribed, I will be holding a similar event next spring, would you like to come?. Our November meeting will also be something special, it will be held at Restaurant La Torreta, near Sax where a presentation will be given from Pellicer and Heredia, a renowned team of lawyers, about all things automobile, importation, re-registration, heritage registration etc etc. This unique event should not be missed as well as having the opportunity to sample the fabulous food that La Torreta provides e.g. the best steak’s on the Costa Blanca. Book this one early; spaces will be limited. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club is the largest of the worlds Jaguar Clubs, apart from joining in the fun at the meetings, members also benefit from a glossy 140 page A4 monthly magazine, Jaguar spares department and a technical advice service second to none. If you live in Spain and own a Jaguar you should be a member of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. The JEC in Spain is organised by Eric Arnold and Ian McMenemy. An ultrasound quickly revealed the problem, an internal intestinal hernia. Liberty was rushed into surgery to try and repair a strangulating lesion of the small intestine, caused by an old tear in the intestine wall. “This is a very rare occurrence but rescued horses that have been abused can come with all sorts of problems, as we have found many times in the past,” Sue says. Veterinarians cut the intestine wall in two more places and sucked out several litres of fluid that had slowly leached out from the intestinal tear. Despite the gruelling surgery, Liberty began to improve and her veterinary team felt encouraged by her progress. On June 1, things took a turn for the worse. Liberty was rushed back into surgery but nothing could be done to save her life. Little Lilly was left an orphan – but there is a happy ending to this sad story. Spain’s largest property portals have forecast that there will be further falls in house prices in Spain in the coming months, but have estimated that they will be more moderate, and that some areas of the country will even register price increases. In various statements, analysts have responded to the fall in house prices of 1.6% in the first quarter, announced by the National Statistics Institute. A Kyero.com spokesperson said that “house prices are decreasing at a minimal rate month to month” and expect average prices to have “fully adjusted at the end of the year.” Though they feel that this still places buying a property out of reach for many and a “continued reliance on foreign buyers.” Head of research for fotocasa.es, Beatriz Toribio, said that this decline is a “slowdown” in comparison with the same period last year. Toribio predicts that housing prices will continue to fall in Spain, but at a more moderate rate, and at the same time stressed that already there are areas registering price increases. She said: “This shows that the housing market will not recover in the same way

Toribio indicated she believes that the worst is over and that the real estate market is moving towards stabilisation, but pointed out that while domestic demand is still weak, it is not possible to talk about recovery. Along the same lines, El Economista reported that the director of studies for pisos.com, Manuel Gandarias, said that if the improvement in the Spanish economy is confirmed, the percentage rates of the declines in housing prices will be increasingly lower, and even zero or slightly positive in certain areas of Spain. However, Gandarias indicated that it is “very possible” that the Spanish property market will continue to see declines in the bid prices offered by the real estate portals because sellers are still reluctant to discount. My week with Marilyn

“What I remembered most was her embrace, her belief in me and the joy she gave, that was her gift. When I think of her now, I think of that time when a dream came true and my only talent was not to close my eyes.” Colin Clark. This film was based on two of Colin Clark’s diaries: The Prince, The Showgirl and Me and My Week With Marilyn published in 1995. Clark was the least famous of his family in 1956 but he achieved great success after this brief but memorable and intimate encounter with Marilyn Monroe. His father was the renowned Kenneth Clark, art historian and his elder brother was Alan Clark M.P, another renowned diarist. Clark chronicled the clash of egos between two legends: Olivier (played by Branagh) and Monroe (Michelle Williams) as well as his growing infatuation with Monroe which left him with a broken heart. Written by Adrian Hodges and directed by Simon Curtisthis is his debut feature film. The film opens with this simple revelation: “This is their true story.” And it is moving and sad for everyone touched by Monroe’s glamour and stage presence. Clark (an attractive Eddie Redmayne) was just 23, from an extremely privileged background, fresh out of Eton, determined to pursue a career in films much to his father’s irritation who offered to get him real work. Clark wanted to prove to himself as well as the famous Clarks that he could make a go of it. He had a lot to live up to. So, as he put it, he decided to join the circus. Coming from such a famous family he already knew Olivier and his wife, Vivien

Film Review

Leigh as well as Margot Fonteyn who were regular visits to Saltwood castle for afternoon teas. It made sense for Clark to use his link with Olivier to ask for a job. Even when he was told there weren’t any jobs he came back to the office every day and just waited and waited… It was Vivien who persuaded Olivier to find something for Clark and guess what? He was given the most rudimentary and unglamorous job of being a Gofor which in the film industry means a person who has been told to Go for this or Go for that. We would call it a dog’s body. Officially it was third assistant director. But what a start! Marilyn Monroe was due to come to Britain to film with Olivier and Clark would be working with this legend. Larry had fallen in love with Monroe on a recent visit to New York and he wanted her to rekindle his career in films. Monroe wanted to gain respect as an actress something she desperately craved and both felt that working together there would be mutual benefits. It didn’t quite turn out like that and the film based on a Terence Rattigan play The Sleeping Prince was largely panned by the critics. It was 1956 when Britain had finally started to shake off the shadow of the last world war. Monroe had been married for 3 weeks to Arthur Miller. It was her third marriage and she was just 30. She had told the press that it was third time lucky. Already there were signs that the marriage had got off to a shaky start. Clark saw her sitting on the

stairs holding a manuscript of Miller’s latest play: After The Fall about Marilyn and she was devastated to read about her mood swings, not to mention the drugs and the booze. Miller decides to return to the States, telling Larry: “She’s devouring me. I can’t work and I can’t think.” During rehearsals Clark witnessed a prickly relationship with tantrums, walk-outs and tempers flared. As director, Olivier’s patience was tested. She was often late, fluffed her lines, was ill-prepared and would walk off the set when greeted by a sarcastic Olivier. An infuriated Olivier told Clark: Teaching Marilyn to act is like teaching Urdu to a badger. He vowed he would never direct again. Marilyn had destroyed his desire to do so. “Monroe doesn’t really forget her lines. It is more as if she had never quite learnt them.” Clark’s intimacy with his Greek Goddess lasted 9 days. It was a whirlwind of a chaste affair for the showgirl and her younger Prince Regent which afforded them some well-deserved privacy. “Monroe took a shine to the confident yet innocent Clark and whisked him away to spend a week virtually alone with her.” You Stepped Out of a Dream plays in the background as the two visit Windsor then Eton before the bubble bursts to Autumn Leaves and Clark’s heart is inevitably broken. Monroe went on to make Some Like it Hot and Olivier played Archie Rice, a failing middle-aged song-and-dance man in John Osborne’s The Entertainer. It proved to be one of the triumphs of his career.

pause for thought Different days can mean many things to different people. So last Sunday, 15th June, may well for some have been a birthday or anniversary, whilst for many, its primary meaning was ‘Fathers’ Day’. But I wonder how many recognised it as ‘Trinity Sunday’, a day which in my youth was accorded considerable significance, with the period between Easter and the Summer Break being known as Trinity Term, both at School and at University. The significance, now largely lost to most of us, of Trinity Sunday, was that of encouraging us to recognise the awesome holiness of a God, who has been made known to us in three entirely separate ways, which we Christians think of as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Not the easiest of ideas for us to understand perhaps, but why should we expect to be able to fully comprehend the Creator of the Universe? Sure, there are those who understand many of the secrets of creation and the various ‘laws’ that define its continued operation, but much yet remains unknown, undiscovered and unexplained, so aren’t we being a touch presumptive if we expect to completely understand the one who designed and created them all? But actually I’m not convinced that this idea of the Trinity is that difficult a concept for us to understand. After all, we readily accept that a single day can have three separate meanings – an Anniversary, Fathers Day and Trinity. And whilst writing, I am looking at a small, 18 inch diameter, circular table, which has a similar sized round base, connected across the centre by a single 18 inch square, inch thick ‘leg’. From above therefore, this table is indeed circular, but viewed from directly in front it looks square, whilst from the side it is shaped like a sideways letter “H”. One table, but three entirely different appearances, depending on your viewpoint. So God is revealed to us Christians in three different ways, and this Trinity season allows us to reflect on the impact this should have on our thinking. specially fitted with an anti-cat device. They have several trees that have been bought, paid for and planted for no other reason than to provide secure, convenient and climatically controlled perches for them. We pandered to their hedonistic lifestyle even further recently – sparing no expense we bought them a bath. It is a pedestal upon which stands a shallow bowl, on the side of which perches a concrete dove. They love it, and throughout the day one or more will be splashing about in it, then hopping on to the dove for a quick preen and tidy. Having had their wash and brush up, they will then leave a message on the unfortunate dove, and fly off to some urgent and important rendez-vous. I have christened the dove Nelson – I’ll let you work out why! However, they have not learnt the lesson

of history; all the great Imperial powers of the past have foundered because they simply got too big for their boots. And they have done just that; they are abusing our good nature – we have spoilt them. We provide them with an interesting and varied menu: bread of various sorts, ditto biscuits, even cake on occasions. We provide clean drinking water and clean bathing water – the fact that both are in the same container shouldn’t really matter to a sparrow. We provide a comprehensive range of comfortable and secure accommodation choices, both day and night, so why can’t the little blighters be satisfied? Why do they have to descend en masse on our fruit trees, and peck and destroy every single fruit before it has had a chance to ripen? If I could catch them, I’d give them a sharp smack on their little bottoms, and send them packing josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk – pronto!

The Inns and Outs of English Life

Contrary to popular belief, I am not a man who regularly hangs out in bars. In fact, the only time I visit such establishments these days, is when we have friends staying or if a sudden impulse grabs me and I fancy a change of scene. There is a marked difference between propping up a bar because the lure of a pint or three is irresistible and spending time there because of the camaraderie that such places offer. In my case it’s the social aspect of having a drink in a bar or pub with friends that attracts me, and it helps enormously if the surroundings are atmospheric and the ambience pleasing. My ideal in this respect therefore is the traditional period English pub with a genial mine host serving up pints of frothing real ale, which got me thinking about the pubs that have, for one reason or another, marked different phases of my life. My Dad was not a drinker, that’s to say that although he enjoyed a glass of Whiskey Mac at Christmas, our pub visits were very few and far between and when they did occur, it was always during the summer months so that we could sit in the pub garden; Mum with a Mackeson, Dad with a light ale and me with a lemonade and bag of Smiths Crisps. flavours then, just plain crisps with little blue bags of salt. My first memories therefore of attending public houses, were at The Sportsman and The Roebuck – both in Reading - on balmy summer evenings in the mid fifties and both travelled to by trolley bus. When I came of age, I had my first over the counter paid for drink at a pub called The Cunning Man. It was considered groovy to drink rum and blackcurrant at the time and that’s how I embarked on my journey into the world of alcoholic beverages. As a lover of fine rum now, I cringe at the idea of such a concoction and I honestly think I would gag if I was to sample that devilish mixture again. Our local on the council estate where we lived, was an establishment with the strange name of The World Turned Upside Down and the pub sign was of a horse sitting in a cart brandishing a whip, being pulled by a man harnessed between the stays. But I used the place rarely, the most specific case being with my best man on the way to the church on my wedding day in 1966. I wish now that I had become paralytic! It was only after the termination of this union – a fabulously long run of eighteen months – that I began to frequent one particular pub that was run by my excellent sister in law, Ye Boar’s Head Inn in the centre of Reading. At the start it was to simply get out of the house and try to alleviate loneliness, but I soon made many friends there and it became a regular haunt. Having realised that it was a big wide world outside of my home town, I made my way to Cornwall and the

picturesque fishing village of Polperro where the younger set of which I was then a member, alternated between three of the village pubs – The Noughts and Crosses, The Three Pilchards and the Blue Peter, all situated on or near the delightful harbour. The latter was the one most often used in the summer of ’72 and it was here that I was introduced to Newcastle Brown and long legged female seasonal workers. My annoyingly itchy feet led me away from Cornwall the following year and I found myself in one of the most beautiful locations in the world and it took very little time to get my feet under the table at the Robin Hood in Hamilton, Bermuda where I spent the next and best two years of my life acquiring a taste for good dark rum and meeting the people who were to become my lifelong friends. By far the longest period of my life spent in one place, was immediately prior to arriving in Spain and was in West Suffolk. Our principal watering hole was The Cloak Inn, easily the best pub in the area, but eventually closed down and sold by an avaricious brewer in the pursuit of bigger profits. It was also the only public house in the country with that name, making it an even bigger loss to the world. The traditional English pub is unique and therefore important, not just as a convenient stop over for travellers, but something that represents a way of life that I believe is worth preserving. And oh, I do miss them . . . and real ale of course.

Right from Day 1 our garden was the domain of sparrows – not just one or two, but a whole chatter of sparrows. They are amusing little people, with their busy little lives filled with important sparrow business, and on the whole I have been happy to share our garden with them - I just wish they had a little more anal control! The deal is: They provide entertainment, while we provide various luxuries such as are not enjoyed by their country cousins, who do not have the good fortune to possess Fairy Godparents in the form of English people. They are frequent recipients of largesse in the form of bread and biscuit crumbs, served on their own bespoke table,

alqueria La Casa Maribel, the opening

The opening day of the restaurant La Casa Maribel approached. To say people were excited would be wrong, they were apprehensive. It was only Maribel and her challenged taste buds that were looking forward to the launch of her restaurant. No one had the heart to tell her that apart from Remitroot Alquerian foodstuffs were practically inedible. When the big day arrived Maribel was in high glee while the rest of Alqueria held its collective breath. Maribel was persuaded to employ Manuela as waitress, it was hoped her harmonious curves would distract the invited connoisseurs from what was going to be placed in front of them. The ambiance was convivial, gentle guitar music soothed the would-be diners while several glasses of a particularly potent Remitroot aperitif stupefied them. All was going well. Then Maribel started the food preparation. The food pundits sniffed the air as cooking odours wafted in from the kitchen. The initial reaction was to check the soles of their shoes for any unwelcome extras. Manuela tried plying the guests with liberal quantities of Remitroot wine and whisky in the hope she could numb them before the appalling food arrived. The subterfuge seemed to be working. Then the food made an appearance. The French connoisseur Didier Frogeaux simply looked at the food, rose from the table and, still looking at his plate backed out of La Casa Maribel. He was never seen nor heard of again apart from a postcard from Kaffeklubben Island asking for his back-pay to be forwarded care of the local post-office. The Italian

representative Alrigo Scoffaconi put a fork full into his mouth but didn’t chew or swallow. He was airlifted back to Treviso where he had the morsel of Alquerian cuisine surgically removed from his paralysed jaws. Burt Scrumblegob, the English oficionado chewed away merrily. “Just like home” he was heard to mutter as he tucked in. Maribel and her unserviceable taste buds still thought the food to be wonderful. She put the reactions of the French and Italian connoisseurs down to jealousy. She believed in the Alquerian brand. Maribel pointed to the remaining diner who was eating the Alquerian Trout, the smell of which was stripping the whitewash from the walls. He was certainly enjoying the fare. Unhappily it fell to Manuela to point out the deluded restaurateur that the remaining diner was in fact English. The horrible realisation dawned on Maribel, ‘English’, his experience of fine cuisine would be on a par with Loco Paco’s exposure to quantum physics. Maribel closed her restaurant and now runs a shelter for the gustatorily challenged.

Leading Removal Company reports on strengthening housing market One of Spain’s top removal companies has reported that they experienced a resurgence in the Spanish housing market during 2013 and it looks like 2014 will be an even busier year. Mat Ford-Dunn, the Managing Director of ‘Advance Moves International Removals’ pointed to the fact that many property values in Spain have now fallen to a much more realistic level and this has definitely resulted in increased house sales. This has been noticed in all regions of Spain as Advance Moves operate their relocation services throughout the mainland. Advance Moves has its main warehouse in Murcia, Spain, with an additional warehouse in Kent in the UK and has had to purchase 5 new vans and trucks to cope with the increased demand over the past year. The UK housing market is also in a state of recovery and increased house sales have resulted in more people selling up and looking to buy in Spain. There are many factors that

tempt expats to Spain, not least the recent periods of turbulent weather, which many parts of the UK have suffered. On the flip side, for economic reasons many British Expats are now able to sell properties in Spain and Advance Moves are often the first choice when it comes to repatriating them back to the UK. Mat was also keen to point out that the increase in demand for their removal services was also down to the level of service and expertise that Advance moves offer to their clients and the fact that many clients had already seen the brightly liveried vehicles on the roads undertaking their removal services. Advance moves is also a member of the British Association of Removers and one of only a few companies that export wrap furniture to provide extra protection for international removals. ‘Our clients know that they are getting a more competitively priced, premium removal service, when compared to the rest of the market. The increased volume of removals enables Advance Moves to offer their clients a more regular and flexible timetable for their individual removal requirements’ Mat sees the trend continuing throughout 2014 with the housing market in the UK and Spain continuing to make steady process. Advance Moves are gearing up for another busy year.

La Finca 11th June 2014. On this day in history in 1950, Ben Hogan returned to tournament play after a near fatal car accident and went on to win the US Open and also 28 members turned up at La Finca with the sun shining albeit with a few clouds in the sky for our latest venture to this wonderful course. The course itself is in splendid condition for this time of the year and the greens were a little on the slow side, well, when I say a “little on the slow side” it has to be fair to say that if you rolled a ball 20 yards along the green, Colin Marsden would reach the hole before the ball and that is with Colin running backwards. All 4 of the NTP’s available were claimed and the recipients of a bottle of fine wine dontated by Tom Jones and Pearl Sabine. We all wish Tom all the cvery best in his rehabilitation and hope he graces us with his presence on the

golf course later this year. The wine went to John Eyre (Hole 3), Steve Higgins (Hole 6), Kate Helm (Hole 13) and Ray Cadman who’s tee shot to the 16th was barely 12 inches away from a Hole In One. Three players split the “Two’s” pot - Ray Cadman, Dag Lovas and R Elkes. Scores on the day were very reasonable and you needed in excess of 30 points to claim a prize and the Best Visitor award went to R Elkes with a very tidy (and top score) 42 points. The Silver Division players –once again – outscored their Gold Division mob and Mick Kennedy and Kate Helm shared 34 points with Kate’s back nine securing her 3rd place with Mick pushed back into 4th. Ernie (Belfast Bandit) once again stepped up to the podium and again, the battle between him and Colin Marsden continues but Colin’s 39 points was 3 better than Ernie’s 36 points. In the Gold Division a 33 from Alan Rixson saw him take 4th place and a 34 point score from Steve Higgins gave him 3rd slot. Darren Hancock took the runner-up slot with 35 points and Chris Oatley took top slot with 38 points. Friday 4th June saw 30 members and guests heading up the AP-7 to the glorious Severiano Ballesteros designed course that is ’ Alicante Campo de Golf ‘ , as usual we were welcomed at the course by Marife and her staff who had included in the deal Tostados and coffee on arrival , the beauty of this deal is that we get there earlier and can all have a chinwag and a gee up prior to playing our game , the course was in excellent condition as usual , however the greens were a little slow making the putting more difficult as the ball needed a good whack to get it close to the hole , nobody broke par at this outing but a good day was had by all with plenty of micky taking out of yours truly at our presentation , so I have redesigned the start sheet that I use for the start list and the results and we will see the what happens at our next meeting . On to our winners and prize takers , with six N T Ps at Alicante and thirty players , only five N T P prizes were taken , with Alan Gifford winning the third followed by Bill Peters winning the sixth ( or was it the eighth ) no one taking the eighth ( or was it the sixth ? ) the twelfth was won by George Holmes , Steve Edwards was N T P on the fifteenth and the final par three seventeenth was taken by Tony Ackroyd , the best front nine with twenty two points was won by Aidan Byrne and the back nine with fifteen points being won by Phil Pettican , in third place was John Chatham with thirty two points ,Phil Harris took second place losing to Bill Peters as both players had thirty four points but Bill won by having a better back nine , our soccer card was won by Nikki Ead. We had all returned to the Mini Golf Bar in Quesada for this presentation and snacks etc; that was provided by the bar and swilled down with a couple of beers.
