Spain ranked world’s 7th best expat destination

A survey by networking community InterNations has ranked Spain 7th-best in the world for foreigners according to criteria including quality of life, finance, ease of settling in and worklife balance. The ‘Expat Insider’ report was based on the average of a number of subindices, including the General Quality of Life Index, Ease of Settling In Index, Working Abroad Index, Family Life Index and the Personal Finance Index. Respondents were also asked, “How satisfied are you with life abroad in general?”, which was weighted heavily in the overall country ranking. Ecuador was the surprise winner, boosted by expats’ high levels of satisfaction with their own personal financial situation there, followed by Luxembourg – which scored highly on career opportunities – and Mexico. The worst countries to live, according to the report, were Greece, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Spain scored highly on factors such as personal safety (94 percent satisfaction) and political stability (79 per cent considered it stable), well above the worldwide averages of 85 per cent and 46 percent respectively. It topped the charts in terms of making newcomers feel welcome (82 percent positive) but was rated only 11th in terms of friendliness. This may explain why just 59 percent responded positively when asked if it was easy to make friends in Spain. Only 5 percent of expats reported an unfriendly attitude towards foreign residents, far

below the global average of 13%. Spain was rated 23rd in the world for ease of linguistic integration but 71 percent of expats said it was easy to learn Spanish and 79 percent claimed they could speak it. The country’s medical care and infrastructure for transport and travel were rated highly but Spain was in the bottom five globally for expat earnings, when compared with previous income. In the Working Abroad category overall, Spain was ranked a dismal 55th out of 61. Overall, some 45 percent of expats in Spain said that they were satisfied with life. 34 percent described themselves as “completely satisfied” with their social lives and less than 1 percent commented negatively on the local weather. Family friendliness scored highly. Only 1 percent of respondents reported having experienced an unfriendly attitude towards families with children and only 2% of participants in Spain viewed the state of children’s health and safety to be in danger. According to InterNations, “This deviates heavily from the 11% of respondents globally who believe this to be the case in their countries of residence.” 19 percent of expats said that they had moved to Spain for ‘better quality of life’ and were seemingly rewarded: Spain topped all other countries except Switzerland on the Quality of Life index. The US tech giant will set up a new Google Campus in the Spanish capital in 2015 in a bid to help budding entrepreneurs launch their very own tech start-ups. Google are calling it a “new home for innovation” in Spain, a country where entrepreneurial spirit and the lack of state support provided to self-starters have been a matter of debate during the country’s economic crisis. The American multinational announced on Monday that its third European campus after London’s and Tel Aviv’s will grant “unparalleled access to mentorship and trainings led by their local start-up community, experienced entrepreneurs, and teams from Google.” “We decided to open a Campus in Madrid because of the thriving entrepreneurial spirit in Spain,” Google wrote in its European blog. “We have seen the booming entrepreneurial community in Spain and are excited to join the local community in making it even stronger. 1st Internastional Travesia “Cabo de Palos” 2014

This weekend Masters from “Club Natacion Torrevieja” travelled to the Cabo de Palos Lighthouse on the Mar Menor to participate in the “1st International Travesia Cabo de Palos”. The event hosted by “Club Natacion Masters Murcia” had entries from over 300 swimmers ,on the day 279 swimmers participated in the race. The race originally planned to circumnavigate the headland around the lighthouse a distance of 3 km but due to prevailing wind conditions on the headland, the race was re-organised to a direct swim to and from the lighthouse a distance of 2600 m. European Champion and world runner up in open water swimming Margarita Dominguez Cabezas was guest swimmer in the race and took the overall 1st place in the event. The rest of the competition was categorised by the normal National Swimming Federations Masters categories and ranking for the local competitors. Both Torrevieja swimmers Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly won 1st place in their categories and Vicki came 2nd in the local competitors rankings, second only to the European swimmer Margarita. Beth being the oldest swimmer in the event was by no means the slowest placed 202 out of the 279 swimmers that finished the race. Iberia robs Barcelona of transfer hub reign

British-owned airline Iberia has announced it is not planning to offer any long-haul flights from Barcelona’s El Prat airport and focus instead on Madrid Barajas, a decision which has not yet been linked to Catalonia’s separatist bid. IAG CEO Willie Wash announced on Monday that Spain’s top airline has no plans to operate international flights from and to El Prat, despite it already being an important hub for flights between Spain and South American countries. “They’re not sustainable routes,” Walsh argued during an interview in Washington at the inauguration of the new A380 British Airways flights between the American capital and London. “It’s very easy for these airlines (British Airways, Vueling and Iberia) to grow but not in a profitable way, and that’s our objective.” “For Iberia, the most efficient model is to focus all its long-haul flights on Madrid as a hub.” The Irish businessman added that IAG would only operate from “El Prat if we think the routes will be profitable”, also stating that the group’s low-cost airline Vueling will soon have fewer routes to and from the Catalan capital. Barcelona surpasses every other city in Spain in visitor numbers. Its economy reaps the financial rewards of an industry some locals claim is out of control and other believe could provide economic stability if Catalonia were to break away from Spain. Local daily La Vanguardia reported the news on Monday without making any reference to possible links to the political turmoil stemming from November 9th’s planned vote on independence for Catalonia. One way or another, IAG’s decision is likely to push El Prat down in the ranking of Europe’s busiest airports (currently in 10th place, Barajas in sixth) and reduce the more than 35 million passengers it received in 2013. As American Airlines CEO Doug Carter put it “For us Barcelona airport is a destination point, not a stopover hub”. Source: www.thelocal.es

accessorise your home

Accessories ranging from flowers in a contemporary vase to art pictures hanging on your walls, all add the finishing touches to any room. Above all, accessories add personality to a room, they inject your own personal touch making your home unique to you and comfortable and inviting for you and your family. Your accessories tell a story about you to guests. Plus, they make your home more inviting and comfortable for you and your family – everyone likes being surrounded by things they love. While there are a few basic principles for arranging accessories, you don’t need a degree in interior design to get great-looking results. Experiment, and don’t be afraid to try something different. After all, rules are made to be broken, and what’s most important is that the arrangements satisfy you! Achieving Balance Balance keeps arrangements from looking lopsided. Balanced arrangements can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical. Symmetrical arrangements are perfectly equal on both sides of a central line, are the easiest to arrange and create a more formal atmosphere. If you have a variety of pieces in different sizes, shapes and colours, try an asymmetrical arrangement. Asymmetrical arrangements create an informal look by balancing the visual weight of the objects. AECC Fundraising

For the third year running a group of ladies calling themselves “The Way-In Club”, held a coffee morning in aid of AECC Torrevieja, this year’s figure of €1423 more than doubling the previous best of €653. The money was again raised by selling home-made cakes and holding a a very profitable raffle. The money was raised with the help of Casa Mia in El Chaparral, KCI Hair and Beauty, The New Salon, The Ship, Chantelles, Reeves and The Bull and Bush. One keen Way-In member also helped by selling her own homemade cakes to customers of local bars.

barnes bulletin QUEEN FOR 2014

On October 6th., the place to be, at least in Pilar De La Horadada, was the Grand Marquee, where Mayor, Jose’ Fidel Ros took on the role of Master of Ceremonies at the annual Queen of Festivities, bit of a do. Over 1.500 good people from Pilar town, and surrounded villages, took their seats under the canvas. Jos’e Maria Dias was eventually declared Winner of Festivities for Pilar De La Horadada, for 2014. The Queen of The Children award went to Maria Munoz Rodriguez Martinez Sa’ez. Mayor Jose’ thanked everyone for helping to make this glittering event so special for all who had taken to the stage. The fiestas have once again been first class, and without the help and support of all towns folk who had worked so hard, in these difficult times, if would not have been so.

Hospital volunteer Ann Bissett was there to collect the money on behalf of AECC from Caroline Richardson, thanked all the ladies for their generosity and hard work, but also reminded the ladies of the need for regular breast cancer checks, which AECC can always provide.

PICTURES AND POSTCARDS

A fascinating exhibition of current artwork, and postcards from a bygone age, is taking place, until October 31st., at the Casa De Cultura, in Pilar De La Horadada.

Paintings by Olga Sa’nchez, in acrylic on canvas, along with charcoal, graphite and watercolour, are mostly of local scenes, and take up one section of the display area.

the eighties, and show photographs of Pilar, Los Alcazares, San Pedro De Pinatar and Dehesa de Campoamor. It was interesting on my visit, to watch and hear visitors, pointing out places they recognised in both the splendid paintings of Olga Sa’nchez, and the old post card photographs. I guess these days, it’s a bonus to receive a post card at all, via our friends at Correos!

The second display area, is dedicated to exhibition of over 120 post cards. These are dated between 1900’s to

When strolling around the Casa De Cultura, take the opportunity to visit the Town Museum, very interesting.

Shani’s Lingerie

Finding the right size bra is often a problem for many women and it’s estimated that about 80% of women wear the wrong size. This is not healthy for your breasts - especially if the breasts are in a too tight bra. It also can be very uncomfortable. Have someone measure around your chest with a tape measure, just under your breasts, and around the back. Make sure the tape measure rests flat on the skin and goes straight across your back. There is simply no substitute for being professionally measured. A measurement CAN be done over the bra you are wearing AND over your T-shirt. However, If you plan on getting fitted, don’t wear a thick shirt like a sweatshirt or sweater. Also, make sure you wear a bra without padding when you attend the fitting. I am happy to offer you this free service and ensure that you are fitted correctly.

From personal experience I can say that I think more women would be happy about their breasts if they had a bra fitting done by a professional and purchased the right type of bra for their needs. Get fitted. And if you are concerned about sagging, find a comfortable underwire (they are out there) and you will see a tremendous difference in your appearance and your self esteem. I cannot tell you the number of times my customers have finally tried a properly-fitted bra who then stared at themselves in amazement, saying they didn’t realize how uncomfortable they had been with their bras until now. Our prices are less than half that of the UK. All Naturana Bras are 12 Euros or less and M&S Bras start from 3 Euros We also have an excellent exchange policy. Just bring back the items with tags attached. We also have a measuring and fitting service on site which will ensure you get the right fit in the first place.

Some people who experience hearing difficulties are found to have good hearing in one ear and very poor or no hearing at all in the other ear. In this situation it is of no value to fit a hearing aid to the good ear as it does not need it and it is of no value fitting a hearing aid to the bad ear because it is beyond help. In these circumstances overall hearing and awareness can be improved by use of a CROS system (contralateral routing of signal). In such a system two devices are worn. The one in the bad ear is not a hearing aid as such it is a radio microphone and the one in the good ear does not amplify sound it just receives it from the radio microphone in the other ear. Using this system wearers can now hear sounds from both sides equally well through the good ear. Other people may suffer a degree of hearing loss in the better ear. In this case the device in the better ear is actually a hearing aid set to rectify that ear’s loss at the same time as receiving the signal from the bad side. An advantage of such a system is that the hearing aid in the better ear can be programmed via a push-button or remote control to act on its own or to act as a CROS system according to the environment that the user finds themselves in. People using these systems benefit from greater 360-degree hearing; however they take a lot of getting used to – up to six months or more to adapt. With all the signal coming into one ear the wearer will automatically look to that side if a sound is heard (eg car coming) but the sound may be from the other side. It can take a lot of

getting used to but once conquered wearers find it of great benefit, as it gives them allround contact with the world, providing a feeling of security and confidence. These systems are not be confused with a device known as a power CROS. A power CROS is worn by someone who has good hearing in one ear but the other ear is so bad that when they attempt to wear an aid of sufficient power to restore hearing in that ear they experience whistling or feedback. (Feedback happens when the amplified sound being fed into the ear canal leaks out, is detected by the microphone on the hearing aid and then reamplified and made even louder.) With a power CROS the microphone is situated on the other side of the head behind the good ear far enough away from the bad ear to avoid feedback whilst giving maximum power. However the same sound localization problems apply, only in reverse. SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2014

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Windows 10!! Whatever happened to windows 9? If you’ve been looking forward to Windows 9, the OS that will fix what Windows 8 got wrong, you’re in for a surprise: There will be no Windows 9. Instead, Microsoft announced it will proceed directly to Windows 10. “The Windows 9 internal beta was a phenomenal success,” said Microsoft PR rep Cheryl Tunt. “I mean, it blew Windows 8 out of the water, and as we all know, “Windows 8 is nigh flawless”. After discussion at the C level, Microsoft has decided it will not mess with success and will leave Windows 9 exactly as it is. As such, work is now getting under way on Windows 10, which should see a public release.” As some of you may have already read elsewhere on the internet this was in reality a ‘Mickey take’ by some internet wag! The natural name would have been Windows 9, but Microsoft is eager to suggest a break with the past. “We’re not building an incremental product,” said Terry Myerson, head of Microsoft’s Operating Systems Group. Which can be translated to “Yeah, we messed up with Windows 8 and the 8.1 update wasn’t much better, so be have better pass Windows 9 and let everyone think that Windows 10 is a whole new beast”. I have a copy of the technical release version of windows 10 and will be installing it when the work gets a little quieter, usually about Wednesday. So by The next article I should be able to offer a brief outline of this version for everyone to read. I have said, should windows 9 have the usual interface that we all love and understand, I will pay good money for it! Well I will be able to tell you all

next week if that statement holds true for the new Windows 10! Is there a start menu? There is, and it tries to combine the familiarity of Windows 7 with the modern interface of Windows 8. That means the menu is split: On the left, apps are displayed in the familiar Windows 7 style, while on the right are more colourful “live tiles” that open the modern, Windows 8-style apps. The start menu is customizable, so you can resize the tiles and move them around, and make the start menu tall and thin or long and flat. According to the writers that Microsoft favour (and for some unfathomable reason, I’m not one of them!), You will have all the familiar bits of Windows 7 (Hurrah) and the integration that will be required for MS Windows to become the standard Operating System for any and all other devices (telephones, washing machines – yep I did say washing machines, in fact anything that will allow Microsoft to dominate the world). Now for the €60K question – How much will it cost? To an honorary Yorkshireman like me, this is a question of paramount importance. Will it be free (wiping tears of laughter from face), highly unlikely. Will it be €64K – No-one would look at it, (wiping even more tears from face) let alone buy it! So I would suggest that it would be in the €75 - €190 slot. I know that this is a hugely safe bet but my crystal ball needs new batteries and I just can’t afford them right now! I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!

Francisco Franco an early history Until November 1975 Spain was ruled by a dictator who styled himself Caudillo de España, por la gracia de Dios, or Leader of Spain by the grace of God we know him as Francisco Franco. A through and through military man, Franco was born into a naval family at the El Ferrol naval base Galicia in 1892. He aspired to be a naval officer but after the Americans obliterated the Spanish navy in Cuba and the Philippines in 1898; budget cuts forced him to join the infantry academy in Toledo instead aged 15. He married Carmen Polo a devout catholic in 1923. Franco volunteered to serve in the Moroccan Rif War; rising rapidly through the ranks he became in turn the youngest ever captain, major and colonel. Aged just 33 he became the youngest general in Europe since Napoleon Bonaparte and commanded the Spanish Legion in 1926; winning 13 medals along the way. During his tenure in clear defiance of the Geneva Convention signed in 1924; mustard gas, phosphene and other chemicals were used against the Berber

Carry on Dongling!

That’s the problem with new technology, it just tries to take over your life. Often with some success too. Alarm clocks for example. There’s a new alarm clock and its sole purpose is to scare the living daylights out of the poor sleeper, shocking him or her into a wide eyed wakefulness. The plan, as I understand it, is to wake the owner with information electronically displayed about their financial health, projected life expectancy or even, and why I’m not sure, the number of “Facebook” friends they have. Now call me a coward but, I really, don’t want to wake up to this, potentially, bad news? Wouldn’t that just encourage you to stay in bed? Well, it would me that’s for sure. But then, I don’t need much encouragement to slack and take a day off work. Nor would it take too much to persuade me to fling the clock at the wall. And that got me reminiscing about teasmaids-well, don’t we all? No? Oh, just me then. Once upon a time people thought that a teasmaid was the bee’s knees when it came to technology in the home. Not only did it wake you up in the morning, it did so, gently, with a welcome cup of hot tea at the ready. Now really, forget things like digital watches or remote control televisions, this was it for cutting edge advancement. Sad really isn’t it? We soon forget don’t we. New advances mean that the friendly teasmaid is a museum piece now, in much the same way as young music lovers of today think that The Beatles aren’t a patch on One Direction. It’s always the same. One day soon a dongle will simply be a word that could have elicited a raised eyebrow reply from Kenneth Williams in a Carry On film. Then there’s Apple. They’ve come up with software that will, through your iPhone, tell you where you’ve parked your car when you experience one of those embarrassing incidents when you just can’t remember where you left it. The software tracks your movements and links the phone to your car. Scary isn’t it? They know what you’re doing and where you are. Talk about take over your life! But this technology hasn’t reckoned on the dim person factor. What, I want to know, do we do when we forget where we’ve put our phone? Answer that one Apple! tribesmen until 1927. It was in revenge for losing 13,000 soldiers at the Battle of Annual. The poison gas was supplied illegally by the German Government. Franco returned to the Spanish mainland where in1934 there was a workers general strike in the mining areas of the Asturias. Fearing the regular army would refuse to attack their own countrymen, the government instead sent Franco’s Foreign Legion to quell the revolt. Murdering, torturing and raping as they went with Moroccan mercenaries castrating the dead, over 2000 people were killed and thousands more injured. In 1936 a general election was held with the Popular Front, a republican government voted in, the last elected government in Spain for the next 40 years. General Franco offered military support to the outgoing Prime minister if he agreed to annul the result. He declined and the new Prime Minister Azańa cleverly moved all the suspect

generals away from Spain, with General Franco posted to the Canary Islands. As military generals planned a coup Franco refused to lend his support gaining the dubious title of Miss Canary Islands for his delay. Franco rightly believed the coup would fail and actually wrote to the prime minister warning of potential catastrophe but Prime Minister Azańa never replied so Franco sided with the plotters. In July the coup started and garrisons across Spain rose up and martial law was declared. Although large areas of western Spain were won by the rebels most of Spain supported the republicans including the main cities of Madrid and Barcelona. Importantly for the republicans the industrial north remained in their hands aiding their struggle. The civil war started as neither side had a clear advantage, about half the armed forces including the air force remained loyal to the government. An aircraft charted

from Croydon by a British MI5 officer, flew General Franco to Morocco to re-join his legionnaires. His 30,000 Legionnaires were stranded as the air force refused to move them to Spain. Hitler sent Junkers 52 transport planes and two battleships to Franco to transport his soldiers to the mainland at Algeciras where they quickly took over much of south west Spain. Franco moved his army towards Madrid and on the way his army defeated the republicans in Badajoz. His soldiers murdered many people including 2000 shot in the town bull ring. The revolt however in Toledo failed and 2000 rebels had been under siege for two months, Franco’s army to rescue them; in the process taking bloody retribution. Atrocities were done by both sides during the civil war; however Franco had a habit of never forgiving or forgetting hence high numbers of casualties both during and long after the war.

Mortgage Showcase at SIMA Autumn 2014

SIMA Autumn 2014 will be held from 24th to 26th October in the Feria de Madrid with mortgage financing at the forefront of the exhibition. Three financial institutions (Bankinter, EVO Bank and ING Direct) have so far confirmed their participation in the event. The availability of mortgage financing comes following official statistics anticipating a gradual stabilisation of the housing market in terms of transactions, prices, mortgages and permits for construction. So far more than 50 companies and institutions are registered to participate in SIMA Autumn 2014 and this figure is expected to increase. Planner Exhibitions, the company organising the exhibition, once again hopes to attract a large number of potential buyers, which has been the main visitor profile of past exhibitions, as confirmed by the testimony of the exhibitors and the Feria’s own statistics, which shows that 97% of the visitors to the fair are searching for a home or other real estate, and 67% of the visitors said it was their intention to buy within a year. SIMA Autumn is aimed at a diverse profile of visitors. The majority of those are the visitors who attend the show in search of a residence (either as a first home or as a change of home), but there are also those who are looking to either purchase a holiday home or who are interested in buying real estate as an investment, and with the participation of

Non-residential products (office, retail, commercial, or land) will also be present at exhibitors’ stands, although to a lesser extent, as well as other related services such as appraisals, valuations, energy certification or rehabilitation, amongst others. The exhibition will be open to visitors on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th October from 11 am to 8 pm, and on Sunday 26th October from 11am to 3pm. Source: http://news.kyero.com/

Camposol Bridge Club The Camposol Bridge Club went on another weekend away to Mojacar staying in the EL PUNTAZO hotel . We all made our own way there arriving at midday, checked into the largest rooms we have ever seen, they were so spacious you could have held a party in each room . The hotel provided breakfast and evening buffets ,the wine was paid for out of club funds and everybody ate and drank to their hearts content. Then came the bridge, over the three days we played five rounds of bridge. In the evening we made made our own entertainment with Gerhard on guitar and Stuart on cornet, the vocals were provided by Stuart, Joe, Kevin.

Hans and Bernie and the audience were most appreciative with hand clapping, laughing and generally becoming raucous. Friday pm winners were Doug Macdonald and Bill Bailey Sat am Anita & Hank Landwehr . pm Petder Kent and Barry Wilson. The overall winners for the whole weekend. 1ST Lia Henkelman and Stuart Burnley {pictured] 2ND Ann Aase and Paula Seager. 3RD Wim & Ali Juffermans. 2014 week 3 The theme this week was the movies and in addition to the usual judges. we had Donny Osmond joining the panel who won the American version of ‘Strictly’ - ‘Dancing with the Stars’ adding his opinion into the mix. For me there is quite an even split this year, 5 superb dancers, 5 who could develop either way and 5 pretty poor ones! Opening the show were Alison Hammond and Lucasz with their Jive to Footloose. Unfortunately, this was a difficult dance for Alison as being a larger girl the kicks, flicks and general bouncy nature of this dance weren’t really suitable for her! She was flat footed, lacking the essential bounce in the knees and as a result kicks and flicks were lacking the necessary precision, but you can never knock her for enthusiasm. I gave her a 5 and the judges 28. The Jungle Book was the next movie to the tune I Wanna Be Like You were Nature specialist Steve Backshall and Ola with a Quickstep. Steve showed great characterisation for the dance with oodles of energy but he was a bit flat footed and his bottom was sticking out in ballroom hold nevertheless an enjoyable performance. I gave him 6 and the judges 34. Jennifer Gibney and Tristan were next out dancing a Foxtrot to Mamma Mia. I have to say this music was more appropriate for Cha Cha Cha than a Foxtrot so for me didn’t sit well. Jennifer really enjoyed singing along to the tune, what a pity that energy didn’t go into her performance - oh dear! her Foxtrot was heavy, plonky with her feet being lifted a mile from the floor. She showed zero elegance, grace or flow in short no Foxtrot! I

awarded her 2 with the judges a total of 23. You Take My Breath Away from Top Gun was next performed by Simon Webb and Kristina and a Rumba. For me the choreography had far too many poses, it was stop and start all the way through, I prefer the smooth sensual traditional style of Rumba. The lines were good but as the Rumba was too staccatto the hip action was missing and he also did a few heel leads at the beginning of the routine a huge big no no! I was a bit disappointed in him this week and gave him a 6, judges a total of 30. Next from the movie Funny Girl and Don’t Rain on my Parade were Judy Murray and Anton and a Quickstep. Congratulations Judy you successfully completed a dance without error! The posture still needs a lot of work, and the steps were a bit plonky but a definite step in the right direction. I gave her 4 and the judges 23. Next out were Tim Wonnacott and Natalie with a Charleston to Cabarets Money Makes The World Go Around. This started off well with great characterisation to the tune but went rapidly downhill with no Charleston swivels in the feet. I have to say the routine went more with the tune than the dance so suffered somewhat as a result. I gave him 4 and the judges 22. Armageddon was the next movie, the tune I Don’t Want To Miss You Babe and a Rumba performed by Caroline Flack and Pasha. Wow, she has beautiful feet. legs and line extensions but just needs to work a bit more on allowing the straightening of the knee to continue upwards to her hips to make this a perfect performance. I awarded her a 9 and the judges 42.

Scott Mills and Joanne were next with a Samba danced to the Little Mermaids Under the Sea. The Samba is supposed to be a carnival dance but was more like a wet fish! I still think he should have left the show last week and in Len’s words there was definitely something fishy about the technique! I gave him a 2 and the judges a very generous 25 (a 7 from Donny Osmond! were you watching the same thing I was?). America from West Side Story my favourite musical of all time was the next featured and it was a Paso Doble performed by Frankie Bridge and Kevin. Fantastic performance Frankie, she lived and breathed this dance from start to finish with great lines. The only thing preventing me from the perfect score was that she is still presenting twine toes in places. So she had a 9 from me and 45 from the judges and the first 10 of the series from Donny. Jake Wood and Janette were next with a Waltz from the Godfather theme tune. Jake is great at getting into character of the tune but a bit disappointing this week for me as he was lacking the necessary drive, elegance and flow essential for this dance. His ballroom posture also needs more work as a result I gave him 7 and the judges 40. Pixie Lott and Trent then performed a Quickstep to Be A Guest from Beauty and the Beast. This was a fast, action packed quickstep, choreography at its best with just a few gaps in body contact preventing the perfect score again. She received 45 from the judges and a 9 from me. On The Town New York New York was the next movie and a Charleston from Tom Evans and Ivetta. Gene Kelly

is certainly a hard act to follow but Tom gave it a great shot with a good variety of Charleston steps but just lacking foot swivel to carry it through. I awarded him 7 and the judges 38 and a big improvement on last week. Sunetra Sarker and Brendan with an American Smooth to The Way You Look Tonight from Swingtime. You can never rule out any celebrity once in Brendan’s hands and so it proved this week. What an improvement from Sunetra, this was a smooth, elegant, graceful performance. She just needs to take care when in hold with the position of her arms and at times her frame when coming in and out of lifts. I gave her an 8 and the judges 40. Closing movie week were Mark Wright and Karen with their Paso Doble to Superman. Sorry but a Paso Doble to this music - not! I just couldn’t take is seriously and despite Mark trying to stay in character being in a superman outfit - oh dear! I gave him 5 and the judges 35 My bottom 2 this week were Scott and Jennifer and the judges had Tim bottom with a tie between Judy and Jennifer. The vote had Jennifer and surprisingly Simon in bottom slot with Jennifer being unanimously eliminated from the competition after the dance off. Let’s see what next week will hold. Will any of the middle 5 make their way into the top next week? Will any of the top 5 falter? Can’t wait to see, but in the meantime don’t forget that you can come along and join one of our classes and have a natter about the show. Until next week - Keep Dancing!

Housing Sector Moved 31% More Money to June than Same Period of 2013

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Development, the Spanish housing sector is showing definite signs of recovery. Their data shows that the private housing market moved 22,255.1 million euros in Spain in the first half of 2014, which is an increase of 31% compared to the same period of 2013 (16,976.6 million euros), and maintains a positive trend after accumulating three consecutive years of decline. The 22,255.1 million euros corresponds to the 164,368 private housing transactions which were carried out between January and June. Specifically, private housing resales accounted for 18,554 million euros in the six months to the end of June (an increase of 35%), while for new builds the amount was much lower, at 3,701.1 million euros (up 14.2%). Madrid was the region to register the largest amount in private housing transactions in the first six months of the year, with 4,320.9 million euros, followed by Catalonia (4,038.9 million euros),

Andalucía (3,988.9 million) and Valencia (2,700.9 million). Behind those regions came the Basque Country (1,055.2 million euros), the Canary Islands (1,043.5 million), the Balearic Islands (957 million), Castilla y León (742.6 million), Galicia (674.4 million), Castilla-La Mancha (582.8 million), Murcia (517.2 million) and Aragón (484.5 million). In contrast, El Mundo reported that the regions where the private housing sector moved less money to June were Asturias (284.3 million euros), Navarra (249.5 million), Cantabria (228.6 million), Extremadura (207.1 million), La Rioja (121.1 million) and Ceuta and Melilla (57.4 million between the two). Overseas COMPLETE COMPLETE HOLIDAY HOLIDAY CARE CARE MOJACAR PLAYA Guides - SALES -MANAGEMENT - MAINTENANCE Company WeRENTALS urgently need more properties for sale and rental for waiting clients Celebrates Properties of the week Record Number of Enquires at Leading Expo Appetite for owning an overseas home, particularly in Spain, appears to have surged in the second half of 2014, after the Overseas Guides Company reported a hefty hike in interest in foreign property ownership and an overall feel-good factor at the A Place in the Sun Live exhibition in October. “It’s fair to say we had our best ever exhibition last weekend at Birmingham’s NEC, recording a 38% jump in enquiries compared to typical previous events,” said Angelos Koutsoudes, Head of the Overseas Guides Company. “Unsurprisingly, Spain has been hugely popular, especially the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol, and talking to some buyers we noticed a sense of urgency to buy there while prices are still low. A number of people chatting to our www. SpainBuyingGuide.com team said they had put their plans on hold for a year

or two but now feel it’s time to tap into the Spanish market. That said, there were also people who intend to buy in a year or more’s time, indicating future buoyancy in the market too. “The exhibition seminars, which we contributed to, are another good barometer, so seeing every seat taken and standing room only at many of the sessions was very encouraging. “At the Overseas Guides Company we’re now looking forward to building on the contacts we made at the exhibition and helping people with the next stage of the buying process, which typically will be a viewing trip. And now we have new offices in the Costa del Sol and Portugal’s Algarve, we’re better placed to help people viewing property and completing their purchase.” Source: http://news.kyero.com

services With retirement savings dwindling, more and more of us are wondering if we’ll be able to retire as planned. Many baby boomers, especially, will have to keep working long past traditional retirement age just to make up for the beating their retirement plans have taken in recent years.

Or maybe not... It’s quite possible that you can still retire as planned…and maybe even retire earlier than expected. How? By retiring overseas... A foreign retirement isn’t for everyone, of course. Family obligations may be an issue for some people. Others might not be comfortable in a place where they don’t speak the language. But if you’re the adventuresome type…or if you’ve dreamed of living in an exotic location– maybe on a sultry tropical beach, in a pristine mountain hideaway, or in a sophisticated, culturally rich city–with better weather and a lower cost of living, retirement overseas may be for you. If you dream of moving overseas, you probably look forward to a low-stress, affordable lifestyle. It’s likely to be a healthier lifestyle, too. Here are some reasons why....

Warm climate Most of us dream of retiring someplace warm. Snow and cold are things we gladly leave behind with our old 9-to-5 lives. And when the weather is warm and sunny, it’s easy to spend more time outside in the fresh air. Before you know it, you may ease into an active lifestyle with lots of exercise… which health experts agree is key to keeping us looking and feeling young. Some expats actually choose an overseas destination because they can practice a favorite sport there, such as

golf, hiking or fishing. Others take up a new activity once they move. If you’re near the sea, for instance, swimming or strolling the beach may become part of your new routine. If you live in a city, you may soon be walking to shops and markets, or just exploring your new home town on foot. When adventure or fresh discoveries lie around every corner, long walks don’t feel like exercise. Healthy eats With a warm climate comes a long growing season for fruits and vegetables. Expats often praise the quality and freshness of the produce they can buy locally. You can choose to eat junk food if you want. But fresh, exotic produce can tempt you to eat more healthily. If you do, your health—not to mention your taste buds—will thank you. Of course, in warm weather it’s also tempting to lie by the pool and just do nothing. That’s okay, too—it lowers all that unhealthy stress. Social life Fresh air and sunshine can also help you make friends. (Health experts say that social networking helps us live longer, too.) Ever stayed home from a social event because you couldn’t face a cold, wet night out? In your new warmweather home, you’re more likely to ask, “Where’s the party?” and enjoy the evening stroll there and back.

Mohsin Measures Up - We certainly think he does!

SPINE SAVVY Many of us take our spines for granted. We may complain about a sprained ankle or a stiff neck, but no one thinks about a ‘swollen spine’. We are more likely to think of injuries we can see on the outside and do not consider what may be happening on the inside. The spine is central to our general state of health. It is full of nerves, muscles and ligaments, connecting to all other parts of our body. The importance of correct posture for optimum spinal health is often acknowledged, but how often do we take this advice seriously? Thursday 16th October is ‘World Spine day’, created in 2013 to raise awareness of spinal disorders and diseases and to promote good spinal health. You can find out more on the website www.worldspineday.org, where you will also be able to print off a handy information sheet, showing a few simple exercises to keep the spine strengthened and healthy. Recent studies have identified over 70% of spinal problems are associated with lower back pain. The condition can initially present itself as a dull ache or ‘twinge’, usually worse when we get up in the morning, then wearing off as the day progresses. In some cases, the pain comes and goes for years, and then suddenly, it worsens and won’t disappear. Repetitive strains (e.g. bending from the waist, instead of from the knee, awkward lifting angles or an incorrect seating position), can test our bodies to their limits. At the Benijofar Chiropractic Clinic, Dr Hans Christian Madsen D.C. sees many situations where lower back pain has affected people’s lives. Sciatica, where trapped nerves cause pain, travelling from the lower back, through the buttocks and down the sciatic nerve running down the back of the leg, is one of the most common

issues for patients. He also treats many people who have developed arthritis in their joints. Treatment for Osteoarthritis of the joints: He has many years experience using Shockwave therapy. Over time, calcification can build up affecting the joints of the body, including shoulders, hips, knees, hands or feet. Shockwave therapy removes this calcification which helps to release trapped nerves resulting in more movement and less pain. Patients are then treated with laser therapy, which helps to regenerate new cell growth. Laser Therapy: Dr Madsen has developed his own specific laser systems which can strengthen and heal damaged cells. They produce a penetrating light which supplies energy to the body. The tissues and cells absorb this energy where it is used to accelerate the normal rate of healing. It brings vital nutrients and fluids to cartilage and discs and increases blood flow to the injured area. Laser therapy is safe, non invasive, non toxic, easily applied, highly effective and has no negative side effects. It is particularly helpful in reducing inflammation. To find out more, please visit our website: www.chiropractor-benijofar. es where it explains more about how the treatments work. We also have the World Spine Health exercise sheet, if you wish to call into the clinic and collect a free copy. Afterwards there is a special “meal deal” but this is optional - we usually start at 12.00 with an interesting talk or demo - so far we have had a flower arranging demo, make your own teddy and a talk and some magic from world class magician Jon Tremaine. THE KNIGHTS ARE HERE!!

We know Summer is almost done when petanca teams sign on for various leagues around, keep the uniform shops busy with new strips and teams contemplate name changes. One of the newest teams to play are Costa Knights. The Costa Knights play in the newly born Sunshine Radio International Petanca league and with a slight change

of name they became ‘Bandidos Knights’ when playing in the Las Salinas League. The core members of both teams are the same and consist of Peter Ward - from Yorkshire, Susan Ward - from Sussex, Liz and Moss Davies - originally from Wales, Cherril Kemp who hails from Hull and Janice and Doug White together with Bobby Allen are from Scotland. We also have 3 other members who we can call on when in Spain and are very welcome when available. We call home The Centro Civico in Playa Flamenca. The Costa Knights held their 1st ever home tournament this October. This was partly to celebrate the opening of the new Alameda Cafeteria at the Centro Civico in Playa Flamenca and to raise funds for the new club. We love our café and location and couldn’t wish for a better setting and café hosts than on that day. We have no sponsorship, so all money spent has to be raised. We knew the day was going to fun... and it sure was. 36 people took part and played an individual triples with a knights twist! 3 matches were played before lunch and 2 afterwards. Lunch was yummy.. a fantastic paella with salad and after a drop of wine, the afternoon went splendidly. The Raffle was very successful with some wonderful prizes and after the presentation took place a quiz - was held, I had my wine head on - so my answers were weird.. The winner of the petanca, after a play off was Alfredo. 2nd place went to Kenny Fraser and 3rd to Colin Birch. The booby prize was hotly contested, but won by Bob Reid. Thank you all who turned up and made the day.

Room With A View PROPERTY REF: ARB3VJ02 179,950€

property sales and relocation specialists This immaculate 3 Bedroom Villa is very well located right on the outskirts of Arboleas village, and just a 5 minute walk into the village centre. This stunning property really does impress from the moment you walk in. It is very noticeable that a lot of care and planning has been taken both inside and out with this property and this has produced a home of immaculate presentation and high quality. The swimming pool and terrace to the rear is very private with a large variety of Mediterranean plants and flowers providing a wide contrast of colours and vibrance to this area. There is around 100m2 of terracing here with various areas set up for sunbathing, shade, and al fresco dining, covering all bases. With this in mind there is also an outdoor kitchen and bbq area set back from the terrace and easily accessed from the summer room. The wall has also been carefully built with great thought to preserve the view and privacy. A stonework path then leads into a relax room, which is covered, but open to the sides with billowing white curtains. This room looks across the full width of the gardens and swimming pool area. To the side of this room is an open gravelled area and the double gates leading into the parking area, with mature shrubs and trees along the edge of the property. There is also a staircase up to the roof terrace here offering fantastic views along the valley and to Arboleas village.

Continuing around to the front of the house and the landscaped garden continues, with two volcanic rock beds and established plants flanking the pathway between the front door and the pedestrian entrance gate. Entering the villa you are immediately struck by what can best be described as a genuine homely feel. The entrance hall leads through to a sizeable kitchen to the left, with ample cupboard space, black granite worktops, and quality appliances. An archway from here then leads into the spacious dining room (previously the 3rd bedroom) with the pentagon shaped room drawing in lots of light and giving plenty of space in this room. It could easily be converted back into a bedroom if desired simply by blocking up the archway to the kitchen. From here double doors with feature red glass open to the living room which has been decorated in a very modern style, and a uniquely designed fireplace is the centrepiece for this end of the room. The owners have furnished the property to have a sitting area, and a TV area, so the there are two distinct sections of the room as the pictures will show. Patio doors then lead out to the summer room/second living/dining area which is a really expansive size, and sliding doors open out from here to the pool and terrace area one way, and to the outdoor kitchen the other. Returning inside to the main entrance hall, there is a spacious family

bathroom with bath and separate shower, plus a door opening directly to the pool area so that there is no need to “drip” through the house from the pool. Another example of the care and thought that has gone into the design of this house. The second bedroom is a good size double room, complete with fitted wardrobes and high level storage. The master bedroom is simply fantastic. Decorated in a stylish silver modern theme this bedroom has lots of wardrobe space, is light and airy, and double doors lead. There is also an en-suite shower room from this bedroom as well. There are so many features to this property it is impossible to list them all, but in short, there are fly screens throughout, Air Conditioning in the bedrooms and living room, a separate relax room, a generous storage casita/workshop, landscaped gardens, outdoor kitchen and barbecue area, slimline eco heaters for the winter, and every detail has been taken care of. This is a superb villa even without considering the location, but the proximity to the village really is the cherry on the cake. This is a villa that will tick the boxes for a large number of people. It really does offer the complete package.

Madrid world’s 5th most desirable city to work

Madrid has ranked fifth in a major new survey of top destinations for expat workers. The Local spoke to relocation expert Pierre-Alban Waters to find out why.

the only country with two of its cities in the top ten.

The Spanish capital scored 5 percent of the votes in a survey carried out by Boston Consulting Group and employment website totaljobs.com.

“It has the good sides of a capital city – it’s modern, it has culture and more jobs than elsewhere in Spain – minus the stress, expense and unfriendliness of somewhere like Paris or London.

London was chosen as the most desirable work destination in the world with 16 percent of the votes taken from 200,000 people in 188 countries.

“Sure there are other cities where you can make more money but you won’t have the unique work-life balance that Madrid enjoys.

New York came in second, Paris third, then Sydney, Madrid and Berlin.

“Barcelona is much the same although it’s a more international city, good in that’s it’s more cosmopolitan but bad in that it has more tourists.”

Barcelona made it into sixth place, meaning Spain is

As for country specific data, the US is the country where the biggest number of foreigners surveyed would be willing to work (42 percent), followed by the UK (37 percent), Canada (35 percent) and Germany (33 percent).

Spain came in eighth place in the potential work destination rankings with 26 percent, above countries such as Italy (25 percent) and Sweden (23 percent). You take it, you pass and then you really start to learn how to drive. Or you crash.” Don’t expect any other pearls of wisdom otherwise you’ll be grossly disappointed. No guesses that Kate and Richard’s marriage has broken down. Recent statistics in the UK show that an alarming 1/2 marriages end in divorce. This is not just about a failed marriage. With hindsight both realise they were too young and become closer when they realise their financial security no longer exists. Time to take action. Written and directed by Joel Hopkins (Last Chance Harvey) “The Love Punch” is uncomplicated but rather contrived as a romantic comedy and as corny as they come. Juicy and sweet and renowned for its concentration of vitamin C, oranges make the perfect snack and add a special tang to many recipes; it is no wonder that they are one of the most popular fruits in the world. Oranges are generally available from winter through summer with seasonal variations depending on the variety. Oranges are round citrus fruits with finely-textured skins that are, of course, orange in color just like their pulpy flesh; the skin can vary in thickness from very thin to very thick. Oranges usually range from approximately two to three inches in diameter.

Seville and blood orange marmalade Ingredients

1.4kg blood oranges 1.4kg Seville oranges 2.25kg granulated sugar 85ml freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 3 tablespoons dark rum 60g dark muscavado sugar

METHOD

Day 1: Slice each Seville orange into eight pieces, and place in a large pan. Pour in enough cold water to cover the orange slices with 1 inch of water so that the fruit can bob freely. Cover, and set aside overnight. Day: 2 Heat the pan with the Seville oranges in it until it begins to boil. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 3 hours, stirring every half hour or so (adding more water if necessary to keep the orange slices covered), until the fruit is very soft. Set a sieve over a deep container, and ladle the orange slices and all the juice into the sieve. Cover and let the mixture drain into the container overnight. Slice the blood oranges into quarters, then cut each quarter into thin slices. Place in preserving pan and cover with enough water to submerge the fruit. Bring sliced blood oranges to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Drain off the liquid, then pour fresh cold water into the pot (enough to cover the orange slices).

Bring to the boil again, lower the heat and simmer for 2 hours, stirring as necessary, and adding more water so the orange slices stay covered. Turn off the heat, cover the pan and leave overnight. Day 3: Combine the juice from the Seville oranges (discarding solids) with the cooked blood oranges in the preserving pan. Stir in granulated sugar and lemon juice. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat and do not stir for about 5 minutes. Add the vanilla, muscavado sugar, and rum; turn down the heat slightly and continue to let it cook at a simmering boil for about 15 or 20 minutes, stirring every few minutes with a wooden spoon, until it is set. It will get thicker and darker in colour - you can test if it has set by spooning a little of the marmalade onto a chilled saucer, letting it cool for 30 seconds, then push your finger across it. If the surface wrinkles, it has reached setting point. If it is still runny, boil the marmalade for a further 2 or 3 minutes, then test again. Turn off the heat but don’t stir it any more. Ladle into sterilized jam jars, and seal with lids. To sterilize jam jars Wash and rinse glass jam jars and lids. Let them dry in a moderate oven (180 degrees C) for 15 or 20 minutes. Clove and orange jellies with cointreau cream Ingredients

12 cloves 12 oranges 1 cinnamon quill 1 cup (220g) caster sugar 4 gold-strength gelatine leaves 1/3 cup (4 tablespoons) Cointreau Cointreau cream 300ml thickened cream 2 tablespoons sifted pure icing sugar 2 tablespoons Cointreau

METHOD

Place a clove in four 1/2-cup (125ml) dariole moulds. Peel the skin and white pith from 6 oranges, then segment each one by holding an orange in your hand (over a bowl to reserve the juice) and cutting segments away from the membrane with a small sharp knife. Divide the segments among the dariole moulds and pack down tightly. Juice 4 oranges and place in a pan with

the reserved juice, cinnamon, 120g of the caster sugar and 4 cloves. Stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Meanwhile: soak the gelatine leaves in cold water for 5 minutes. Squeeze out excess water, then add to the warm juice with 2 tablespoons of Cointreau. Stir to dissolve, then allow to cool. Fill the moulds with the juice mixture, carefully pulling the oranges away from the sides to allow the jelly to coat the sides of the moulds. Refrigerate overnight. Zest and juice the remaining 2 oranges. Place in a saucepan with the remaining 100g caster sugar and 4 cloves. Stir over low heat until the sugar dissolves, then simmer for 5 minutes until syrupy. Stir in the remaining Cointreau and cool. For the Cointreau cream, whisk all ingredients until soft peaks form. Turn jellies out onto plates and serve with the syrup and Cointreau cream.

Overseas Guides Company Celebrates Record Number of Enquires at Leading Expo

Appetite for owning an overseas home, particularly in Spain, appears to have surged in the second half of 2014, after the Overseas Guides Company reported a hefty hike in interest in foreign property ownership and an overall feel-good factor at the A Place in the Sun Live exhibition in October. A number of people chatting to our www.SpainBuyingGuide.com team said they had put their plans on

hold for a year or two but now feel it’s time to tap into the Spanish market. And now we have new offices in the Costa del Sol and Portugal’s Algarve, we’re better placed to help people viewing property and completing their purchase.” Source: www. smartcurrencyexchange.com

Up-date on Faith from the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation

Faith the amputee pony to receive new prosthesis aid from America

A special gel sock developed for a dolphin with a prosthetic tail is being sent from America to Spain to help a neglected pony whose leg was amputated three years ago. Faith the pony was found in 2010 with a mutilated foreleg after she was left for days badly entangled in her own rope. She was rescued by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales but, despite their best efforts, Faith’s leg had to be amputated and she earned fame as Spain’s first pony to be fitted with a prosthetic leg. Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said the special gel sock will help cushion Faith’s stump from her prosthetic leg,

preventing rubbing and chafing.

“We’ve got a little pony who loves her leg and she’s very active, she’s on the go all the time,” Sue said. “Pressure sores are always a problem for human amputees and even more so for horses, because they carry most of their weight on their front legs. So it’s important that Faith doesn’t have any discomfort because then she starts to rely on her other front leg and overload it.”

As with the three-door Mini, there’s plenty of leg and headroom in the front. And the whole car has been lengthened by 16cm, which results in 7cm of extra legroom in the back - enough to let adults sit there without feeling cramped. Mini has also added a third rear seatbelt, turning this into a five-seater. However, the person in the middle has to straddle a very high lump in the floor. Other drawbacks are that putting in a rear-facing car seat means there’s little legroom for whoever sits in front of it, plus anybody with big feet will find getting in and out of the small rear door openings awkward. The bigger boot is now almost identical in size to a VW Polo’s, and even slightly bigger than an Audi A1’s. What it is not, however, is a match for a VW Golf’s, so a baby buggy is still a tight fit. As with the three-door, the rear seats fold down to let you extend the load space, and there’s a decent amount of in-car storage. It’s easy enough to find a comfortable driving position in the Mini 5-Door, plus the front seats hold you tightly

in place in corners and are mounted close to the floor to make the Mini feel sporty. The ride comfort is identical to the three-door Mini, meaning that the Cooper S and SD models feel a little too sporty around town, thumping over speed bumps and potholes. Fortunately, they are more comfortable on faster roads, even when fitted with relatively large, 17-inch wheels, plus Mini offers an optional adaptive suspension system that lets you soften things off whenever you want. This system isn’t necessary in the regular Cooper models, which generally feels more supple and forgiving than the S. All of the engines are smooth, although the upright windscreen means there’s noticeable wind noise at motorway speeds Large windows give you an excellent all-round view, and while the Mini 5-Door is bigger than the three-door car (itself bigger than its predecessor), it’s still small enough to be easy to park. You won’t have any trouble keeping up with traffic if you go for one of the Cooper models, either. Most versions of the Mini 5-Door are available with the option of an automatic gearbox; only the Mini One diesel misses out on this. Read more on: www.telegraph.co.uk

As Duncan Burr pointed out in his ‘Pause For Thought’ column last week, the visiting season is over for him and I suspect for most of us who live the good life here in Spain. My last visitor left a few weeks ago and as far as I know, I’m not due any more now until next year. The spare room can go back to being a store room again. The visitor in question took a very circuitous route to get here. He’d firstly travelled to Tenerife from the UK the previous week, to visit friends there, but then it got complicated. One can’t fly from Tenerife to Almeria, so he told me, so he thaought Malaga was his next best option. Uh, no. He couldn’t find a direct flight to Malaga, so instead flew to Barcelona and in doing so, probably flew over Almeria on the way. From there and after a delay, he then flew down to Malaga, probably over flying Almeria yet again! The final leg of his journey entailed the 100 kilometre drive back up to Almeria in a hire car. The whole convoluted episode took the best part of 17 hours and – as we worked out later – in that time, he covered around 2,760 kilometres. As you can imagine, when he finally arrived here at one thirty in the morning, he was feeling pretty tired. It was only the next day after he’d had a good nights sleep, that I asked how long he was staying; I’d forgotten and as it turned out, so had he, so he checked his online booking, which confirmed he was here for four days. Later that night, when I was loosely trying to decipher what he’d like to do with his time, he gave me a look and said, “Ah, It’s not actually four days, it’s only three.” That’s when he had to make the rather embarrassing admission about his return travel plans. Rather than take the fairly obvious decision to fly back to the UK from Almeria - the airport is 30 minutes away from my house - he’d booked from Malaga, “Not thinking,” he said. Ah, indeed! He was not a happy bunny and to add insult to his injured pride, the flight from Malaga departed at 6.30 in the morning, so he would have to travel down the previous night to avoid any possibility of missing the plane. I could feel his pain, it had all gone badly wrong: a lost night here with his old mate and of course the added cost to his already hefty travel bill, of an overnight stay in an hotel. He spent the remaining two days of his visit in a slightly restrained mood, no doubt kicking himself mentally at his loss of concentration when clicking the appropriate box in the online booking form. Alqueria The harvest

The fields to the west of Alqueria are ablaze with colour. The red berries of the ripe Remitroot plants blanket the landscape. So intense is the colour it hurts the eyes and confuses the mind. This promised to be a bumper crop. The berries, stalks, flowers and leaves are all used to make a multitude of products. Everything from whisky to the lagging for water pipes. The fierceness of the berry’s colour and rigidity of the stems assured a high alcohol content for this season’s wines and a robust aphrodisiacal extract, the two most highly prized attributes of the plant. Antonio Poyato, who owned the Remitroot plantation looked with pride and anticipation at the red swath of colour. It assured not only his prosperity for the coming year but also that of the whole village of Alqueria. The method of harvesting is singular and in true Alquerian spirit. For this reason alone it is worthy of recording in some detail. The harvest must take place five days after the first berry turns red. This is when the extracted juice produces its most potent aphrodisiac. If the berries are left on the plant the local birds devour them with relish. The air then becomes filled with frenzied feathered paramours. A cross between Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ and ‘Debbie Does Dallas’. They are a danger to themselves, the people of Alqueria in general and low flying aircraft. Gathering the Remitroot berries is a seasonal pastime performed by the good people of Alqueria. On the promise of large amounts of cash of course. Picking takes a full day with practically every able-bodied member of the population in attendance. The start of the picking day is a picture of industry, concentration and productivity. However, as the juice of the Remitroot berry becomes absorbed through the pores of the pickers it begins a rapid fermentation. Causing that prized of all processes, namely intoxication by absorption. But not ordinary intoxication this is tempered with the plant’s property as an aphrodisiac. The result is that the number of people actively involved in berry picking steadily reduces. Instead, they become engaged in another more strenuous pastime. To the analytical mind this is possibly a variation on the ‘Law of Diminishing Returns’. As the berry harvest nears completion only a handful of the more resilient citizens remain in the field. The vast majority become distracted, confused and deorientated. All memory of the promised remittance is soon forgotten in a swirl of pink mist and passion. Poyato and Alqueria have the only crop that is harvested without cost, sold at a premium and grows nowhere else. Alqueria is certainly a favoured place. John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Maintaining the Status Quo

By Lucero Rodriguez Biggs

I haven’t had a moment’s peace since that cat and its kitten arrived. First of all we had to establish who’s who. Now I’ve been brought up in a cat owning household, so I know a thing or two about them. The common belief by humans is that dogs chase cats, and cats run away from dogs. Of course that is all publicity hype on our part – it makes us dogs look brave and therefore admirable, and cats appear vulnerable and helpless, and therefore lovable. The truth is that neither of us is stupid; cats have superior armoury, and if they catch you one on the nose it really, really hurts. Plus they can run up trees, which I feel is cheating. So as soon as she arrived we opened negotiations. I suggested the normal arrangement – I chase, she runs, but she wouldn’t hear of it. ‘How very dog’ she said in a condescending tone, ‘I’ve got better things to do than waste my time running away from you.’ And then she just walked off! How ill-mannered is that? Well, two can play at that game! If she can ignore me, then I can ignore her – with knobs on! Then I remembered the kitten. I feel that for its own sake the kitten should be brought up properly: that is, it should be made aware of the dog/cat continuum. I approached the kitten to suggest that there are natural laws which balance the universe, and if those laws are not upheld, then the universe might become unbalanced and tip over, and we’d probably all slide off the edge. I’d hardly started to explain the situation when she appeared from nowhere, all humped up and puffed out with a bottlebrush tail, and using the sort of language that young impressionable ears really shouldn’t hear. So I left – you just can’t help some people! However, I didn’t get where I am today without a certain degree of manipulative skill. I make sure that whenever the humans are around they notice me ignoring the cat. ‘What a good girl Lucy is,’ they say, and then they pat me. Or if they play with the cat, I make sure I’m there, ignoring it like billy-o. So they pat me some more, so as I ‘Don’t feel left out.’ Apparently they are ‘Maintaining the Status Quo.’ Though I have no idea what the relationship between myself and the cat has to do with five men who make a noise called music and live inside the television has to do with anything.

What A Brilliant Start!

The new league had the best of starts on the morning of their 1st matches with a splendid mention by Simon Morton on his Sunshine radio programme. Thank you. Phew! It was a very warm day but one that the 16 teams has been awaiting with great anticipation. The league is all about being a little laid back, full of fun and laughter - yes - do your best to play brilliantly, but hey ho if you don’t - no sweat as long as its enjoyable. Sporting Camposol striker Jose scores three goals against Blanca

Sporting keep joining the top of the primera autonomico by winning the game against Blanca at Estadio Municipal. Jelco Oosterhofs team were far too strong for the openent. After 5 minutes a great pass by Dani towards Jose. Jose controlled the bal in the box and the right winger from Blanca brought Jose down with a hard tackle. Jose stept up ti take the penalty and made the 1-0. The following half hour went easy for Sporting. The home team created a lot of changes but unfortunate no goals. In the 25th minute Rober made some space for himself firing in a shot from 20 yards that the goalkeeper of Blanca was relieved to see clear his far post. In the second half brought Jelco Oosterhof 2 subs. Pirri for Moha & Nick for Rober. Especially for the 16 year old Nick was this something new, his first minutes for Sporting. I did not expect that he would make his minutes so fast Anyway Nickolas trains very well and then things go sometimes fast. But that maybe

different next week. I have some nice young players. And they can be good players but they must be patient. According to: Oosterhof In the second half their efforts paid off as again Jose with a great shot of the edge of the box and there was the deserved 2-0 lead. Soon after that Sporting got an another penalty and again it was Jose who stept up again going for his hattrick he did not miss. 3-0 for Sporting. There was no stopping Sporting and the home team created more changes now it was Juanma that got a free header but he was unlucky. So a satisfied coach: Of course, if you win you are always happy. But I have to be critical about the first half we could have played smarter. That was not good. But I have a lot of young inexperienced players. And they need time, but that’s okay, we train fairly good so the rest will follow. According to: Jelco Oosterhof Goals: 3x Jose. Man of the match Jose

EDECO FORTUNA 0 MAZARRON FC 1

Enrique’s headed goal in the 80th minute gave Mazarron a hard earned victory against a team which included several players who appear regularly in the Tercera Division, two leagues above Mazarron. The game kicked off five minutes late following a torrential downpour and thunderstorm which sent the travelling Mazarron supporters scurrying for whatever cover they could find. Mazarron could have taken the lead after seven minutes when Alfonso’s free kick found Tolo who could only direct his header just wide of the far post. At the other end Fortuna looked dangerous on the break and first Lorca and then goalkeeper Conejo had to be alert to prevent goalscoring opportunities. Neither side managed a serious attempt on goal for the rest of a disappointing first half which ended when Israel and Tolo combined to set up Alfonso whose shot was wide of the target. Chema and new-signing Manu replaced Israel and Said at half time and Mazarron began to stamp their authority on the game. A left foot drive from Tolo was just wide after 56 minutes and then Tolo played in Chema whose shot was

just blocked by the onrushing Fortuna keeper. After 70 minutes a flick from Tolo, who worked tirelessly upfront, found Diego whose fierce volley sailed just over the bar. Then Tolo broke through only to be foiled by the keeper at the expense of a corner. Mazarron’s pressure paid off after 80 minutes when Liders’ left wing corner was headed back across goal by Dani and turned in at the far post by Enrique. Three minutes later Tolo raced through again but his mishit shot, despite beating the keeper, was cleared off the line for a corner. In the last few minutes Fortuna surged forward in search of an equaliser but the Mazarron defence and especially the excellent Conejo in goal, remained solid to ensure a victory which moved Mazarron up to fourth in the league table. Mazarron’s next game is at home to A.D. Pliego on Sunday 12th October, kick off 17.30. Team: Conejo, Lorca, Antonio Jose, Dani, Said (Manu), Alfonso (Javi), Israel (Chema), Enrique, Liders, Diego (Martin), Tolo. Man of the Match: Lorca

Lime Bar Golf Society

The golf societies venue for the 8th October 2014 was held at El Valle Golf Course. Twenty eight players teed-off in warm sunshine with the course in good condition, however the bunkers were unplayable due to the heavy rain fall last week. There were a few players with high scores leading to a handicap adjustment, this resulted in wild cheers at the presentation. The competition was in the stapleford format and the scores recorded are as follows. Nearest the Pin on the 3rd Hole (par 5) in 3 shots was Les Henderson. Longest Drive on 7th hole was Mick

Slater. Nearest the pin on the 14th hole (par 4) in 2 shots was Alan Jackson. Nearest the pin on the 15th hole (par 3) was Graham Mitchell. Silver Class 3rd place was Norman Dobson with a score of 26 points. Silver Class 2nd place was Les Thwaites with a score of

28 points. Silver Class 1st place was Paul Abbott with a score of 45 points. Gold Class 3rd place was Bill Denne with a score of 34 points (on count-back). Gold Class 2nd place was Steve Cottle with a score of 38 points. Gold Class 1st place was Mick Slater with a score of 40 points. A very good day in pleasant company, with thanks to Captain Mick Slater for organising the event and other members who assisted. Also thanks to the Staff at The Lime Bar and ladies for an enjoyable meal. Anyone wishing to Join our friendly society just need to phone Mick on 659866468.

Furniture First Rojales Tuesday Night Trios

Ten Pin Bowling League Week Two played 7th October 2014 After their flying start last week, Los Bandidos had hoped to continue with another victory. But Splash had other ideas and, took the first two games. If it wasn’t for MauriceAllens 216 scratch game, LB would have been pointless on the night. So, a 6 -2 win for Splash, sees them move up to second in the league. Caballo Negro bounced back from their loss last week, with a comfortable 8 – 0 win against Belgas Torrevieja 2. Eija Suomi of CN bowling the Ladies high game scratch and handicap with 201 & 227, and high series h/c 564. Once BT2 get their settled handicaps, I’m sure they will start collecting points. After their great 6 -2 win over Team Finland last week, Crazy Pinz were confident they could ‘take’ The Med Bistro Bar El Raso but, they were brought back down to earth. With Lesley Day bowling the Ladies high series scratch of 517 and Tony Ray rolling a 224 scr

& 237 h/c game, MBB took all 8 points and, confirmed their position at the top of the league. Team Finland were in no mood to lose two games in a row and, completely overwhelmed Juans’ Warriors 8 – 0. Lucky Strike played out a 4 – 4 draw with The Dreamers, who had Ulf Grondahl bowling a fine 165 scr game. The Mixers took on the reigning champions Split Happens and, after three consistent and close games, a 4 – 4 draw was a fair result. Los Lobos were hoping for a better result this week and, after taking the first game against RightMoveInsurance, things were looking up. But after two further very close games, it was RMI who came out on top 6 – 2. Our first raffle of the new season produced a great response from the league and, many thanks to all who donated prizes on the night.

Rojales Netball Club pipped at the final post...

The chase is on , our player of the year competition has two games to go and the pace is hotting up , we currently have around six players in the running for this competition , watch this space in December when our P O Y comes to an end , and our POY is named . Today’s game was played at Alto Real which has always been a course that was included amongst our monthly competitions , the course was in reasonable condition and the new bosses seem to be putting a lot of work into improving it , the greens had recently been hollow tined but the were just about playable , the problem at the course was the first cut from the fairway which proved very difficult for most of us to play out of , and if you were unlucky enough to be in it then a high club such as an eight iron or higher was needed by us amateurs , but I think the biggest problem at Alto Real is going to be their new price structure , maybe they are going to charge above the value of the course in the coming months , speaking to a couple of our local society secretaries they have said that they will not book there if the new price structure remains the same , I have been told that the increase will be around é15 per two games which is an increase of some 21% , but lets wait and see if the new bosses have a rethink and hopefully lower the new costing , only time will tell. The results of today’s game gave us nine players scoring above thirty points , but our winner on the day was Phil Pettican with thirty eight points , followed by Bill Peters who scored thirty five points then Steve Edwards took third place with thirty four points , each received cash prizes , Bill Peters took N T P on holes eight , ten and seventeen with John Rush winning N T P on the third hole , a sleeve of three Srixon golf balls was awarded for each par three hole, our soccer card was won by Nikki Ead who selected York (I didn’t know they had a soccer team) . I would like to thank Brian Jones who kindly donated the golf balls for today’s game and to thank Bill Peters who is donating the golf balls (four sleeves of three) for next months game . Finally we wish to thank the Mini Golf bar in Quesada which is located a few minutes away from the Quesada Arches who provided us with some very welcome snacks that we washed down with the liquid of our choice , predominantly San Miguel.

Two teams from Madrid, one from Murcia and one from Huddersfield in the UK spent the day playing netball against Rojales on Saturday, 4 October. Rojales started the day playing some good netball beating the UK team 13-12 followed by wins against Madrid B and Murcia (in which their newest recruit Angela truimphed). Their final game was to be the tournament decider against the big guns, Madrid A. Rojales had beaten them on their previous meeting in June so Madrid were really up for revenge. Rojales’ centre court of Donna, Tracy and Ronnie started well getting the ball into their shooters, Sam and Carly, who were under extreme pressure from a strong Madrid defence to convert their shots. At the other end of the court Rojales’ defence of Claire and Sophie were making life very difficult for the Madrid shooters by breaking down their rhythm of play. At half time the score was 6-4 to Madrid and still all to

play for. Rojales started the second half strongly and managed to pull back the deficit to even the score until the final minutes when a couple of stray passes enabled Madrid to counterattack and finish the game with a 10-7 win. Although Rojales were disappointed to have lost it was a great team performance and a enthralling game for the spectators to watch. Members of Rojales’ Council were on hand to present the winning trophy and best player award which went to Rojales’ GA, Carly. Rojales Netball Club would like to thank Pam, Heather and Luke for their help during the day, and of course Rojales Ayuntamiento for their continued support. If you want to be part of this successful netball club come along on a Tuesday to the Norwegian School in Quesada from 7pm-8.30pm or contact Tracey on 679539995 for further details.
