HUMANISTS OF MURCIA DISCUSSION GROUP

The discussion group season got off to a flying start with Ann Bresnihan giving a talk on The Struggle for Secularism in Spain. The meeting opened with a quiz between 3 groups. The subjects covered were historical events with dates from the civil war, international attitudes, and the role and strength of the church before, during and after the war. Ann took as her starting point the great steps forward achieved by the Second Republic of 1931. One example was the separation of church from the state. Most of the developments were later overturned during and after the

civil war by the great collaboration of the church with Franco. Contemporaneous photos from newspapers were shown of bishops and other clergy giving nazi style salutes alongside Franco. She said that Spanish bishops were generally very conservative and out of touch with reality. Their attitudes were helping to reduce support for the church. Younger people are not following the church, even politicians are realising that there is no support for these policies as seen with the recent attempt to restrict women’s access to abortion. Ann referred on more than one occasion to the power exercised

by Opus Dei, even now getting dispensation from national educational laws e.g. single sex schools. The source books used for her talk were, Gunpowder and Incense by Hilari Raguer The Catholic Church in Spain 1875 1998 by William J Callahan El Poder de la Iglesia en la España

Going down: jobless rate dips below 24 percent

Over 150,000 Spaniards found work from July to September, Spain’s best summer since the country’s economic crisis began, official figures released on Thursday show, but youth unemployment remains chronically high. Unemployment in Spain stands at 23.67 percent, according to the latest Active Population Survey (EPA) covering the third quarter of 2014. The figure remains one of the highest in the developed world, but the good news for Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s conservative government is that it is falling. The total number of jobless in Spain now number 5.43 million, down from just under six million one year ago. The drop of 515,700 in one year is the biggest year-on-year reduction ever seen in the third quarter, according to this statistical series. The jobless rate among the under-25s was still extremely high at 52 percent and there were 1.79 million families with all working-age members unemployed. The number of people looking for work in Spain fell by 195,000 in the third quarter - the biggest such decline on record for that period. But that left 5.4 million people still without a job. Most of the jobs created this summer were in services, but the figures showed the manufacturing industry also started to generate work again — as did the construction sector which sparked Spain’s economic crisis when it collapsed in 2008. Spain’s conservative government is forecasting that unemployment will fall to 22.2 percent by the end of next year. “For the first time since the crisis, our country is going to see net job creation in 2014,” Labour

Minister Fatima Banez said on Thursday. It forecasts the economy will grow 1.3 percent in 2014, bouncing back after six years of crisis that brought it close to financial collapse. After officially exiting recession in mid-2013, the economy has been growing steadily this year. The central bank on Thursday estimated growth of 0.5 percent for the third quarter compared to a year ago.

It warned however of lingering economic risks in the eurozone, where growth has ground to a halt overall. The EPA calculation of Spain’s unemployment rate is based on a quarterly survey of 65,000 households across the country. The EPA - different from the monthly figures provided by Spain’s Labour Ministry - is considered the clearest picture of unemployment in the country as it also captures people who are looking for work, but are not registered at the country’s employment offices. Samaritans in Spain Lynda Bellingham

ort It is with sadness that we hear that Lynda Bellingham died last night after a long fight with cancer. The press release said she died peacefully in her husband’s arms, and for that we can be grateful. Lynda was given an OBE for her work with charities, and here in Spain she was patron of Samaritans in Spain for several years. She began as Patron almost at the inception of Samaritans in Spain when it began as Costa Blanca Samaritans, remaining till just a few years ago when her work commitments became overwhelming for her and she felt she could no longer give the time she felt she should give them She became Patron of the Samaritans in Spain because, as she said, it offered a listening ear to people who so needed one when they really

needed it. Lynda’s own personal courage was manifest in her determined fight against cancer, dealing with the chemotherapy that was, as she said, so strong her body was protesting. Her personal decision to end the therapy in November and to hopefully have one last Christmas with her family was preempted by her sudden death. But even through all the pain, Lynda took time out to pre-record a farewell appearance on Loose Women where she told the world to grasp everything, to not be afraid and to enjoy all we can from our lives. What a profound message to take into our lives. Lynda had this courage, but for some that courage eludes them and they need support. Some find it in family and friends, others in religion or work, but for a few these are not an option. If you feel in this position it would be a fitting tribute to Lynda and her courage, as well as a courageous thing for you to do for yourself to contact the Samaritans in Spain on 902 88 35 35. They also offer a drop in centre at Punta Marina shopping centre and email support on pat@samaritansinspain.com. Her passing is a sad day, especially for Samaritans in Spain, but her life and courage is an inspiration to us all, and let us take that message forward. Thank you Lynda for all the love, courage and fun that you have bought into all our lives. Source: Terry Crandon

Upgraded Guardamar charity shop opens, new “euro shop” planned for Dolores

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s popular Guardamar charity shop this month reopened in a new, modern and central premises that boasts access to plenty of nearby car parking. The rescue centre’s co-founders, Sue and Rod Weeding, are also planning to further expand their network of eight charity shops to include a second “euro shop” in Dolores by years’ end.

“We now have 81 horses, ponies and donkeys at the centre and we need a minimum of €4000 a week to keep us going – and that doesn’t cover surgeries or hospitalisations,” Sue says. “We are now in our seventh year and police across much of the Costa Blanca are now on our side. It’s so important that we can always respond when they call us. That’s why the shops are vital, so we have the funds to continue our work, grow as an organization and advocate for animal welfare in the Valencia region.” Sue says more volunteers are needed at the relocated Guardamar shop, in Calle de la Puerta del Cairo, 03140 Guardamar del Segura. Next door to Pil Pil fish restaurant.which is run by Spanish manager Pilar “We’re over the moon to have a Spanish lady running it – she’s our first Spanish manager – and we’re also looking for English-speaking volunteers. It’s a great way to practice your Spanish, improve your social life and meet new people,” Sue says. She is also calling for expressions of interest for people interested in volunteering at the Dolores euro shop. Please call the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information. Those wishing to donate large furniture items can also arrange pick-ups via this number. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is open to the public the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. The centre is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For directions, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net. Or call Sue 652 021 980

Instructions

Things You’ll Need ° Pumpkin ° Sharp knives ° Large spoon

1. L ay out the newspaper on your workspace and set the pumpkin on top. It is a good idea to use several layers. The newspaper will protect your workspace and make cleanup much easier. 2. C ut a hole in the top of the pumpkin, around the stem, using the knife. When cutting the hole, angle the knife to create a cone shape. This will prevent the top from falling in when you place it back on the pumpkin. Pull on the stem to remove the piece that you cut out. Set this piece aside; it will be the lid for your jack-o’-lantern. 3. P ull all of the guts out of the pumpkin using your hands and the spoon. Use the spoon to scrape around the inside walls of the pumpkin. Be very sure that you get everything out of the inside if you plan on lighting your jack-o’-lantern with a candle. 4. D raw a scary face on the pumpkin using a pencil. You can draw the face of a popular monster or come up with your own terrifying design. If you are drawing your own design, think pointy, slanted eyes and big fangs, and feel free to put your own creative spin on the pumpkin. 5. C ut out the pieces of your pumpkin’s face using a sharp knife. Remove these pieces and discard them. 6. W hen you are finished carving your pumpkin, put a lighted candle inside and replace the lid. Campoverde Theatre Group performed their latest musical play I’m Free! to packed houses at the Casa de Cultura San Miguel, Many patrons were very disappointed in not being able to see this play which has received nothing but praise from enthusiastic audience. Praise was lavished on all the leading actors. Kath Darsley excellently portrayed Mrs Slocombe and had the audience laughing nonstop as she flirted with the very well played Mr Lucas (Mark Lord). Colin Nelson did a great job playing Captain Peacock and Sarah Hughes was a very accurate Miss Brahms. Tony Kelly was well cast as Mr Humphries and his scene with Pauline Shaw had people rocking with laughter. The addition of cleaning and maintenance staff added much additional humour. the cameo roles were also highly entertaining and very funny. The highly original second act saw the life story of Mr Grace where he was reintroduced to a variety of his former wives, each with funny tales to tell about their time together. Victoria Holden managed to convince even Spanish patrons with her portrayal of the flamenco dancing Conchitta, a money grabbing young Spanish woman who only married in order to inherit the vast fortune. All of Mr Grace’s wives were amusing and their choice of musical memories provided opportunities for the chorus and dancers to show their well honed skills.

Established 40 years in the UK

Hydrangea is the spectacular flowering star of the summer and autumn garden, and established plants are able to withstand dry periods surprisingly well, as long as they get a good drink regularly during the hot season. Interestingly, hydrangeas also seem to grow to perfection in coastal areas and can even withstand a few salt-laden sea breezes. They are not particular about soil conditions and seem to grow just as well in heavy clay soils as they do in sandy

loams. The hydrangea most commonly grown is the large-leafed Hydrangea macrophylla, which grows in a multistemmed, tight dome of foliage and flowers. When planted fairly closely together, these plants produce a dense canopy of shade, right down to soil level, which makes them superb, weed-suppressing, ground-covering plants. And they look fantastic through most of summer. They have two distinct forms to their blooms. The one most often encountered in gardens is the mophead or hortensia hydrangea,

which has a mass of coloured sterile florets that form a round head. They even grow and flower in places that receive little sunlight, although the shadier the spot, the fewer the flower heads. While they also grow perfectly in full sun, flower heads rapidly become bleached and colourless if exposed to continuous, strong sunlight. The true hydrangea flowers are seen clearly in the other bloom type – the lacecap, which have a cluster of small, fertile flowers in the centre surrounded by a ring of large, coloured, sterile florets. They grow very happily in dappled shade, especially in a spot that gets plenty of afternoon shade. Pink or Blue? Flowers can be pink or blue depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the soil. Acidic soils produce blue flowers, neutral soils produce very pale cream florets, and alkaline soils result in pink or purple. To intensify blue tones apply a soil acidifier such as aluminum sulphate. Where the conditions are acidic, but pink flowers are desired, sprinkle a double handful of hydrated (builders’) lime around each bush in autumn. The flower heads will turn pink, usually the following growing season. Results are most effective when plants are grown in large pots.

CORVERA MAY SEE APRIL FLIGHTS

The politicians are determined to see Corvera open next year The European Union has extended their consultation time on deciding the outcome of Corvera airport by another month. Compensation to the airport authority AENA for their investment in San Javier is believed to be the only remaining hurdle in opening the new Murcia regional airport. Meanwhile, plans to open the new transport hub continue, with what is expected to be the penultimate operational test having been carried out this week, as the State Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) sent a group of technicians to find and check the condition of all facilities for the purpose of certifying the operation of the new airport. A total of 7 technicians visited the site, in a combinedoperationbyAESA,SENASA,which deals with aviation training, consultation and technical assistance towards aviation safety and the environment, and INECO, a global leader in transport engineering and consultancy. The team visited every facility at the airport managed by Sacyr, and have concluded in their report that they have found no impediment that prevents the new Corvera airport functioning normally, thus paving the way for a final inspection before the airport can open. In addition to checking the status of all the facilities, the technicians also carried out a variety of tests in order to check the response times to potential emergencies at all points in the facility, including the most distant, ensuring a maximum response time of less than 3 minutes. In these tests,

the private company contracted to carry out fire fighting and emergency rescue procedure responded well within the maximum time, with a response time of just 2.25 and 2.30 minutes. It was therefore concluded in the report that with the final test still pending, so far everything is looking favorable, and a theoretical date for opening has been given as of April, 2015, depending on the ruling of the European Union. With a potential date now in mind, it is expected that the airport will be presented at the next international travel agency event held by the IATA association, which is set to take place from the 11th to the 15th of November in Prague. With nearly 1000 delegates, from over 200 airlines and representatives of over 60 schedulesfacilitated or fully coordinated airports, this semi-annual meeting is one of IATA’s largest events. The goal of the conference is for airlines and airports to obtain the slots that will give them the best possible schedule to offer their customers. The flight “slots” being allocated in the IATA conference are from April to September, 2015. Should Corvera not be able to present itself at this next conference, the airport would have to wait until the next available session, which will be held from the 23rd of June, 2015, in Vancouver, Canada, or even next autumn in the November 2015 conference being held in Bangkok, Thailand. Missing out on this next crucial bidding event could force the airport management to carry on with their plan to open,

irrespective of the pending decision from Europe, a decision which is likely to end in only one of two ways, the first option being that there is no case to answer, the second being that compensation must be awarded for the construction of the second runway at San Javier, thus resulting in nothing but a financial burden, rather than an operational restriction. Many still argue that it will not be possible to close San Javier as passengers already have flights booked into the summer of next year, but one only has to look at how quick action was taken in closing Blackpool airport in the UK, with flights diverted within days, some with only hours notice, and, although a very different reason, that argument cannot be held in balance. Local coordinator of the IU-Verdes group, José Antonio Pujante, believes that it is “highly doubtful and it makes no sense” that the Competition Tribunal of the European Union would approve the opening of Corvera, as it is so close to the commercial airports at San Javier and Alicante-Elche, but with San Javier set to close, Corvera is further away than Alicante-Elche. A report of the European Commission approved the now questionable 200 million euro loan required to close San Javier, as Corvera was considered “necessary” for regional development. The Directorate General for Competition also reported on issues with the San Javier location, which suffers “a serious problem of saturation in high season”, along with the restricted military academy activities at certain times of the operational day. Similarly, the runway

News

was / is relatively short for large aircraft, and the facilities are close to “valuable natural areas” and surrounded by zones “densely populated”, so that any extension would have a negative impact. Therefore, it would prove difficult to increase passenger numbers in the future, a report which was concluded and approved even before the recent reduction in passengers using San Javier. On Wednesday, the Regional Minister of Industry, Tourism, Business and Innovation, Juan Carlos Ruiz, confirmed that the opening of Corvera is “a quantitative leap for tourism in the region”, and it is “essential for tourism that this airport opens”, whilst not giving any actual dates, but guaranteeing that the regional government will do “everything in our power to make it easier to open”. Part of his insistence is that a report from the Chamber of Commerce of Murcia states that the regional economy will grow again in 2014, after five years of decline, but next year “may be an important year” in which we can “translate that growth”. With the operational outlook now looking more positive than ever before, and with time ticking away until the first payment of 7 million euro needed before the 1st of January to offset a 180 million euro payment plan, the ability to secure flights sooner rather than later can only be of benefit to the new Murcia Regional airport, albeit at the cost to San Javier, which will close at some point, whether in April or later, a move which is seemingly inevitable. It’s quite simple really, electrons re-combining with electron holes, release energy in the form of protons. In the trade, they are known as PN - Junction Diodes. To you and me, L.E.D.’s., or light emitting diodes. Pilar De La Horadada’s Council “Cherry Picker” has been very busy over the last twelve months or so, taking out the incandescent and sodium bulbs from their light standards, and replacing same, with L.E.D. equivalent units. Incandescent bulbs have a life span of between 1,000 to 2,000 hours, whereas, the L.E.D. units, will shine happily on the highways and byways of Pilar, for between 35,000 and 50,000 hours. An added advantage is that L.E.D. units are a lot safer for the environment, having no mercury of arsenic content, which could be a problem, should the units be dropped, or toppled in a R.T.A.. The L.E.D. lights, installed by Pilar Works Department, use 90% less energy than the incandescent units, and as Mayor Jose’ Fidel Ros Samper proudly tells me, the municipal electricity bill for street lighting, has been reduced by 500, 000 euro. A shining example to other councils perhaps.

LES CARRIE’RES DE PARIS

A visit to “Gay Paris, where only--”, well, you know the rest, is not complete until a visit to the Catacombs is undertaken.

The public entrance is located in the Place Denfert-Rochereau. It’s advisable to arrive in good time for the 10 o’clock opening (Closed on Mondays) as the queue starts to form along the pavement, around 9.30 AM.. I mention “Public entrance” as there are numerous other entrances to the labyrinth below, concealed beneath

non-descript man hole covers, derelict buildings and parkland, across this great city. These entrances are used during the hours of darkness, by Parisians who which to party amongst the bones, but are regularly patrolled by the local police, so beware. After payment of some seven euro, a 19 meter spiral stairway, takes the visitor to what is sure to be the worlds largest grave, with the remains of six million people, stacked to roof height, along many miles of tunnels, dug beneath the streets of Paris. Opened in the 18th century, this tourist attraction continues to intrigue historians, archaeologists and the visitor to this great city, who wishes to depart from the obvious attractions above. The self guided tour (Approx. 2 hours) takes the visitor through rough hewn and brick lined passages, eventually returning to the surface, via another spiral staircase, in a part of the city, perhaps not visited before, so a street map is recommended. A second tip is to pack a torch, as wandering about, there are many gated passages, leading to who knows where. Crunchy, delicious pumpkin seeds are high in calories, about 559 calories per 100 g. In addition; they are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and numerous health promoting antioxidants.

Their high calorific value mainly comes from protein and fats. Nonetheless, the kernels are especially rich in mono-unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) like oleic acid (18:1) that helps lower bad LDL cholesterol and increases good HDL cholesterol in the blood. Research studies suggest that Mediterranean diet, which is liberal in monounsaturated fatty acids help to prevent coronary artery disease and strokes by favoring healthy blood lipid profile. Pumpkin seeds hold good-quality protein. 100 g seeds provide 30 g or 54% of recommended daily allowance of protein. In addition, the seeds are an excellent source of amino acid tryptophan and glutamate. Tryptophan is converted into serotonin and niacin. Serotonin is a beneficial neurochemical often labeled as nature’s sleeping pill. Further, tryptophan is the precursor of Bcomplex vitamin, niacin (60 mg of tryptophan = 1 mg niacin). Glutamate is required in the synthesis of γ-amino butyric acid (GABA). GABA, an anti-stress neurochemical in the

brain, helps reducing anxiety, nervous irritability, and other neurotic conditions. Pumpkin seeds are a very good source of antioxidant vitamin E; contain about 35.10 mg of tocopherol-gamma per 100 g (about 237% of RDA). Vitamin E is a powerful lipid soluble antioxidant. It prevents tissue cells from the free radical mediated oxidant injury. Thus, it helps maintain the integrity of mucus membranes and skin by protecting from harmful oxygen-free radicals. Pumpkin kernels are also an excellent source of B-complex group of vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine) and folates. These vitamins work as cofactors for various enzymes during cellular substrate metabolism in the human body. In addition, niacin helps in the reduction of LDL-cholesterol levels in the blood. Along with glutamate, it enhances GABA activity inside the brain, which in turn reduces anxiety and nervous irritability. Furthermore, its seeds contain very good levels of essential minerals like copper, manganese, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium. Just as in pine nuts, pumpkin seeds too are very rich in manganese (provide 4543 mg per 100 g, about 198% of daily-recommended intake). Manganese is an all-important co-factor for antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. It is therefore, consumption of pumpkin kernels helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents and scavenge harmful oxygen-free radicals. Medicinal values of pumpkin seeds. Research studies suggest that pumpkin seeds has DHEA (Di-hydro-epi-androstenedione) hormone blocking actions at the receptor levels. Exposure to high DHEA levels may lead to gonadal tumours. Thus, the seeds cuts the risk of prostate and ovarian cancers in human. In addition, experimental studies suggest that certain phytochemical compounds in pumpkin seed oil may have a role in prevention of diabetic nephropathy (diabetic kidney disease). Because the movie Halloween (1978) was on such a tight budget, they had to use the cheapest mask they could find for the character Michael Meyers, which turned out to be a William Shatner Star Trek mask. Shatner initially didn’t know the mask was in his likeness, but when he found out years later, he said he was honored. The first Jack O’Lanterns were actually made from turnips. Halloween is the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas. The word “witch” comes from the Old English wicce, meaning “wise woman.” In fact, wiccan were highly respected people at one time. According to popular belief, witches held one of their two main meetings, or sabbats, on Halloween night. An intense and persistent fear of Halloween is called Samhnainophobia. Fifty percent of kids prefer to receive chocolate candy for Halloween, compared with 24% who prefer non-chocolate candy and 10% who preferred gum. The owl is a popular Halloween image. In Medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches, and to hear an owl’s call meant someone was about to die. According to Irish legend, Jack O’Lanterns are named after a stingy man named Jack who, because he tricked the devil several times, was forbidden entrance into both heaven and hell. He was condemned to wander the Earth, waving his lantern to lead people away from their paths. The largest pumpkin ever measured was grown by Norm Craven, who broke the world record in 1993 with a 836 lb. pumpkin. Stephen Clarke holds the record for the world’s fastest pumpkin carving time: 24.03 seconds, smashing his previous record of 54.72 seconds. The rules of the competition state that the pumpkin must weigh less than 24 pounds and be carved in a traditional way, which requires at least eyes, nose, ears, and a mouth.d Trick-or-treating evolved from the ancient Celtic tradition of putting out treats and food to placate spirits who roamed the streets at Samhain, a sacred festival that marked the end of the Celtic calendar year.

Written by Michael Burke RHAD MSHAA of Digital Hearing, Quesada

for children who have to wear hearing aids.)

For those who wear behind-the-ear hearing aids, ear moulds are an essential part of the system. These moulds are tailor-made to each individual ear and its hearing loss. They come in many different styles, colours and materials.

There are two other features of the ear mould to consider: (a) the vent and (b) the tube. The vent is an air hole in the mould that allows the ear to breathe. The bigger the vent, the more air that can circulate but also the greater danger of feedback. The size of each vent on each mould has to be calculated according to that ear’s hearing loss and to provide maximum airflow without any feedback. In the case of the most severe losses some moulds have no vents at all.

Materials Most ear moulds are made of hard acrylic. These are longer-lasting, more durable and can be reshaped after manufacture if any discomfort is experienced. They are suitable for most hearing losses but ideally not used for very severe or profound hearing loss. For these hearing losses one of a variety of soft silicon materials is better as they cling to the ear canal, preventing amplified sound escaping and causing feedback (whistling). This type of mould cannot be modified after manufacture and also some people find the skin in the ear reacts to the clingy material and can get sore, in which case a hybrid mould is recommended. The hybrid is a hard acrylic mould with a soft tip. This allows a more comfortable outer fit while still preserving a very tight seal at the tip of the canal. Styles Ear moulds come in many different shapes and sizes – from the small canal tip to the full concha. Some are solid, some hollowed out to give a lighter weight, but as a rough rule of thumb the larger the mould and the softer the material the more power that can be achieved before any danger of feedback occurs. All moulds can be spangled with stardust can also incorporate favourite football team

any colour, even if required! (They the crest of your if you want – ideal

The tube connects the hearing aid to the mould. This needs to be kept clean and free of all moisture; otherwise loss of sound will occur. When new, these tubes are soft. Over a period of time, especially when exposed to sunlight, they harden and this adversely affects the quality of sound delivered to the ear. They should be changed at least once every year. A New Sense Of Hope?

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Over the past 12 months I have seen many people who have had problems with their computers not because of a virus or malware but because of ignorance. Before anyone gets upperty with me, please look up the word ‘Ignorance’ and you will see something along the lines of: ‘Ignorance is a state of being uninformed (lack of knowledge)’! Today, and for the next several months we will be working at this ‘lack of knowledge, from the ground up. Computers, What are they? In their simplest form they are nothing more than a glorified adding machine. They can’t even do a simple subtraction! Add on a display to see what is happening, a keyboard, and more recently a mouse, to better interact with this adding machine and you have the basics of a computer. Whether it is a 30 shilling re-conditioned box or a £30,000 all singing, dancing and coffee making wonder, they all need plugging in! The number of times I have had the phone call “My computer is dead – it just won’t work at all” and all it needed was plugging back in after the office cleaner had unplugged it to used their vacuum! Now assuming that you have plugged in your webbook, laptop, desktop, tower, or HAL (IBM just moved back 1 letter), connected your monitor, keyboard and mouse to your box, or just lifted the lid of your laptop, you are ready for the next great adventure. “THE BUTTON”! The button is the on / off switch that every computer has and everyone needs to push. Fact! Pushing the button when it is running doesn’t cause the computer to break! A quick push will probably give you a message that the computer is shutting down and you will have to wait. Windows (all versions) is really good at preventing any damage to itself, as is most other Operating Systems. When you first push

the button it might take a while to start up – this is normal because it has a battery of tests that the computer does before it will even start to load the Operating System (From now on I will shorten that to OS). This is known as POST or Power On Self Test (didn’t say it was smart!) which simply checks that you have a keyboard attached, that the memory chips are still there and all the other bits are working properly. Most Desktop and Tower computers have a second button that doesn’t seem to do much. When you computer is up and running press this other button and watch your computer have a panic attack and die! This is the reset button and is very rarely used and will do exactly what it says on the tin – RESET! This is from the days when computers sometimes froze and I do mean completely and even the ‘friendly’ turn on/off button didn’t work. The rest button simply momentarily interrupts the flow of electric and the computer just stops! Release the button and up it comes again, back into life! I have said in many articles over the passed two and a half years that I’ve been writing and advising you, the readers, that you will have to work much harder to damage your computer, I recommend a ‘Wakefield Wildcats’ Drop-kick across the living room with everything you have got, if you really want to damage it, otherwise, anything less is pretty much unlikely to damage it! Finally you might have to look for a DVD drive, but it’s pretty standard equipment on every computer – for now! The how and why to use this will be covered in a later piece. During this first piece you have cover connecting to the power, You know that it is almost impossible to damage, short of severe physical damage and know what most of the bits facing you, do! Next time we will journey onto the rear of the tower / desktop and everywhere else on a laptop. See you all then. I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic!

‘War, good Lord, huh . . . what is it good for? Absolutely nothing.’ So sang Edwin Starr in 1970. The song reached number one in the US charts and was a top five hit in the UK. Frankie Goes to Hollywood covered the song in 1980 and their version was equally successful. If you know the song, keep it in the back of your mind as you read this. The past week has been a poignant one where war is concerned. Who can forget the moving TV pictures of the ceremonies carried out at a War Graves Commission Cemetery in France, where 14 unknown WW1 British soldiers were finally laid to rest, alongside comrades who died all those years ago. It was part of the one hundred year memorial tributes which will culminate in two weeks time, at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. ‘At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.’ (Hum the song) A recent poll suggests the commemoration of the First World War has increased the public’s knowledge of the conflict and brought people in Britain together. It also suggests that the centenary, marking the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, has also led to increased interest in researching family histories. The last veterans died some years ago and yet every new generation is unavoidably aware of the conflict which was, we were told, ‘to end all wars.’ The slaughter of young conscripts was unparalleled in any warfare, past or present; millions lost their lives. (Hum the song) Another ceremony took place as well last week, somewhat further away from home. Britain’s war in Afghanistan came to an end on Sunday, after a 13 year conflict which has cost billions of pounds and hundreds of lives. In an historic moment in the Afghan desert, Britain lowered its flag at Camp Bastion in an end of operations ceremony, signifying the finish of the longest military campaign in modern times. But what has it achieved? (Hum the song) Those few hundred British troops remaining at the camp will begin to make their way home in the next few days after handing over to the Afghan forces. Many observers believe the Afghan National Forces will be unable to prevent Camp Bastion and the Helmand province from returning to the control of the Taliban. Military chiefs said the British campaign in the country had given a ‘new sense of hope’ to the Afghan people and made the streets the UK safer from terrorist threats. Many people – me included - fail to understand the logic of that comment. (Hum the song) So what have we, as a nation gained from these two very different kinds of warfare? A hundred years ago the world was a different place. Armies fought set piece battles, committing thousands of troops in terrifying face to face actions where thousands died. Many would ask, for what? Today, the war is fought against torrorists, small in number and devious of task. They set roadside bombs to kill and maim, but never confront their enemy in open warfare: the rules of engagement have changed, but our troops still die. (Still humming?) A hundred years on, many would ask, War, good God, huh . . . what is it good for? By Paul Martin

Arts Primavera Club 2014, October 31st–November 2nd, Barcelona: Big names in club music come together to crank out tunes that will keep you dancing all night (and all day as well if you want). Best of all, a ticket to the whole event will only set you back €25 ($32). Madrid en Danza, November 6th– November 30th: Dance companies from 23 countries descend on the Spanish capital to offer styles from ballet to urban to flamenco and everything else in between. Not to be missed. Cartegena Jazz Festival, November 1st–November 22nd: Beautiful Cartegena is in November hosting big names including Macy Gray, Branford Marsalis and Cat Power. Barcelona, Zona Neutral, Fundación Miro, Barcelona, October 25th 2014–February 15th 2015: During the First World War, Barcelona was a hot bed of culture as artists escaped the conflict in Europe by heading to the city. This exhibition about a unique era features films, photography, advertising materials and much more. Zinebi documentary and short film festival, Bilbao, November 14th– November 21st. A highly-rated festival featuring documentaries and short films from around the world. Culture Tosantos, Cádiz, October 31st/ November 1st: November 1st is a national holiday in Spain to mark All Saints Day, when families traditionally visit the graves of their ancestors and honour their memory.

However, many places like to start off the mourning process with a bit of a party and Cádiz leads the way when it comes to Halloween night japery. The Andalusian city celebrates Tosantos by focusing on its local food produce on the eve of All Saints Day, with locals typically dressing up as rabbits, pigs and chickens lurking around the city’s main markets. Fruit and vegetables are often used to satirize social realities and politicians and other public figures from Cádiz, Spain, the sensationalist media or the world are put together in an edible and humorous manner. Important: Everyone must take a look at their will to make sure it complies with directive 650/2012. If you live in Spain and do not do this your estate will not go to your spouse if you have children.

Directive issued by the European Parliament 650/2012. This directive approved in 2012 establishes that from 17th of August of 2015 onwards if your will does not expressly say that you wish English law to rule your inheritance it will be governed by the law of the last residence of the deceased.(This can result to be a disaster as Spanish people can only leave 1/3 to spouse and the other 2/3 has to go to the children even on the first step). Who is affected in practice ?: Anyone living in Spain who has children and wishes to (as is normal in the u.k.) leave his assets to his spouse . Action to be taken ?: Have a look at your will and make sure you have declared on it that you wish English law to rule your inheritance.(it is highly likely that you have not ). Have it amended immediately. Not doing so will result in your children receiving 2/3 of your estate instead of your spouse . This is extremely important which is why the directive was

approved in 2012 but does not come into force until the 17th of August of 2015 to allow people to revise their wills. Ignoring this information could have disastrous consequences. Even if you are non resident of Spain we recommend making sure you state in your will that you wish English law to rule your inheritance as otherwise their could be dispute over last residence domicile which could cause a lot of problems. If you have doubt come and see us. If your will does not need changing we will not charge you. If it needs changing we will charge half our normal fee . Michael Davies. Abogado. Ex-IMF chief Rato: fallen angel of Spanish finance

Fraud allegations have driven a spectacular fall from grace for Rodrigo Rato, the man credited with Spain’s onetime economic boom and now destroyed by its bust. The 65-year-old former finance minister was hailed for kicking off a golden decade of growth in Spain’s economy from the late 1990s and later led the International Monetary Fund. Now, six years after the financial crisis started, the toxic fallout from it has landed him in court and turned him into a hate figure for many ordinary Spaniards. On October 16th a judge questioned him over alleged spending sprees on company credit cards by him and other ex-managers in the bailed-out finance group Bankia. He had already been questioned on suspicion of fraud in an ongoing probe into the stock market launch of Bankia, which was rescued by the Spanish government in 2012. He has denied wrongdoing in both cases. “Rato always came across as someone brilliant and efficient but also very clever,” said political consultant Antoni Gutierrez Rubi. The charges now hanging over him reflect “the great decline, the great downfall of the professional and ethical icon that was Rato”. The prime minister at the time, Jose

Maria Aznar, in 2010 called Rato the “best economy minister” in Spain’s modern history. But when asked by reporters about him after the credit cards revelations this month, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy would not even speak Rato’s name. The allegations that Rato and more than 80 others spent a total of more than €15 million, reportedly on luxuries such as nightclubs and safaris, embarrassed Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) and sparked a string of resignations. “It alarms and outrages us,” said the current leader of the party, Maria Dolores de Cospedal, who just last year had called prominent PP member Rato “the star of Spain’s economic miracle”. Rato was thought a natural successor to Aznar and was expected to run for prime minister in 2004, but mistimed his bid. Rajoy beat him to the candidacy but lost the election. Rato promptly left Spain to become managing director of the International Monetary Fund, the global emergency lender that later played a key role in tackling the eurozone debt crisis. He left the IMF in 2007 for “personal reasons” and was later handed the job of managing Caja Madrid, one of the regional savings banks that fused to form Bankia in 2010. He oversaw the stock market listing of Bankia in 2011, seen as a triumph after

the previous three years of financial turbulence. But the euphoria did not last. In May 2012 the government had to nationalise Bankia to save it from ruin. Spain then had to turn to the eurozone for a €41-billion euro bailout to save its whole banking sector. Seven months after Bankia was rescued, Rato found himself walking into court for questioning. Furious customers who said the bank had lost their savings yelled at him: “Thief! Go to jail!” The scene was repeated last week when he went before a judge over alleged corporate crimes in the credit card scandal. The court made him pay a three-million-euro bond while it investigates further. “The impact of the charges is much

bigger this time round,” said political expert Rubi.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Sunday said Spain’s banking system was in “stupendous” shape after almost all of the country’s banks passed a European Central Bank stress test exercise.

up to nine months to cover the gaps.

“In 2012 all we knew was that Bankia had been badly managed. Now we know it was badly managed by people with no scruples, ethically speaking.” The credit card affair has damaged not only Rato’s image but that of his party ahead of regional elections due next year, Rubi said. In a previously “unthinkable” move, Rato has suspended his membership of the PP. “He has no political future,” said Rubi. “There is a feeling that Rato has destroyed his shining reputation. He had a halo of superiority and triumph everywhere he went. Now he has fallen.” Source: www.thelocal.es

No stress: Spain’s banks pass ECB tests

All of Spain’s banks except Liderbank were shown to need no extra capital in a financial audit conducted by the ECB. The findings contrasted sharply with other parts of the eurozone where nearly one in five lenders were found to be still on shaky financial foundations. A total 25 of the 130 banks flunked the audit, the ECB said, although none of them were among world leaders. The European Commission praised the tests as “robust exercises, unprecedented in scale and among the most stringent worldwide”. It said the assessments will “provide a high level of transparency on EU banks’ balance sheet and data exposure as of end-2013 and allow the identification and redress of any remaining vulnerabilities”. The goal was that financial institutions “can again provide affordable lending to the real economy, to households and SMEs (small and medium enterprises) in particular”. Banks with shortfalls must prepare capital plans within two weeks and have

As part of the audit, the ECB also reviewed the quality of bank assets to make sure they were accurately valued. The stress tests were carried out by the European Banking Authority (EBA) in London, which ran the banks through two different economic scenarios to see if their balance sheets are healthy enough to withstand further economic shocks. Under a baseline scenario, a bank’s core capital ratio, a measurement of financial strength, must not fall below 8.0 per cent. In the adverse scenario, it must not fall below 5.5 per cent. The Wall Street Journal noted that Spain’s Banco Santander, the eurozone’s largest bank by market value, passed with a core capital buffer of 10.34 per cent. Only Spain’s Liderbank, failed after being shown to have a €32.2 million ($40.1 million) capital deficit. Bank of Spain Governor Luis Maria Linde said in a press conference, “The reform and restructuring process of the Spanish banking system carried out in recent years has borne fruit”. Menorca vs Mallorca Both Mallorca and Menorca have some fantastic properties available – everything from high end apartments overlooking the beach to sprawling villas tucked away in the hills. Prices can vary greatly between the islands though. Kyero’s October 2014 Price Index has shown that average prices on Menorca are just 77% of those on Mallorca, making it an excellent choice for property purchasers looking to pick up a bargain home in the sunshine. Just 20 miles of travelling means savings of more than 20%. The figures come in light of the news that housing across Spain costs 41.8% less than in 2007, according to the Tinsa IMIE house price index. For many second home buyers, there has never been a better time to look to the Balearics. In fact, property sales across the whole of Spain have picked up of late, with data from the National Statistics Institute showing a 10.7% increase in sales during July, when compared with July 2013.

The 28,583 transactions from July represent the fifth successive month of increases in sales, pointing to the beginnings of a sustained picking up of the market. Second hand sales are largely behind the positive growth, as Kyero’s Martin Dell observes, We’ve seen a significant surge in the number of second hand sales over the last several months, which is driving forward the current positive movement in the housing market. Many buyers – both domestic buyers and those from overseas – have been attracted by the price falls that Spain has experienced over the past seven or so years. Spain has always been a popular country with holidaymakers and a significant proportion of them see owning a property there as an investment for their retirement or for their children. There has been a definite upturn in the second hand holiday home market of late, as well as the domestic, fulltime home market. Source: http://news.kyero.com/ Mojacar Playa

Great autumn getaways in Spain Help for Heroes at La Zenia

Summer’s definitely over in Spain, but that’s no reason to pack away the suitcases: now is one of the magical times of year to get out and explore the country. Here The Local lists ten great travel ideas for autumn. Spain is justly famous for its long to explore quieter corners and see hot summers and amazing beach what Spain gets up to when people holidays, but that doesn’t mean the aren’t looking. country shuts down for the rest of From incredible hiking in the the year. Indeed, much of the best travelling Pyrenees to subtropical forest in the in the country happens after the Canary Islands, The Local has put crowds head home. together a list of the country’s best Autumn is more intimate, a chance autumn getaways.

Once again Mark the Dancer delighted the spectators with his nimble footwork when he danced the Sword Dance last Saturday. Mark was appearing with The Torrevieja Pipes & Drums when they were taking part in the collection day for Help for Heroes at La Zenia, Torrevieja. After the initial session at Cosum car park the band led the British Legion Standards to the area where volunteers of this wonderful charity had erected the usual stalls to attract the crowds, with the hope of raising much needed funds for our Heroes fighting in modern day conflicts. A total of just over 3000€ was raised to the delight of the organizers. JOAN WADDINGTON

HIKING IN VAL D’ARAN: The unique Aran Valley is the only part of Catalonia on the northern side of the Pyrenees. In winter it is a popular ski area but in autumn its dramatic mountain peaks and

exquisite villages make for perfect hiking country. The valley is also a paradise for linguists with locals here speaking Spanish, Catalan and their very own Aranese, a dialect of Occitan.

SEGWAY RIDES IN PENEDÈS: The Penedès wine region where cava — Spain’s answer to champagne — is produced is less than one hour’s drive from

Barcelona but hiking around vineyards once there can be thirsty work. The solution? Whizz through the wineries on a Segway for a tipsy two-wheeled tasting tour.

GOING TROPPO IN LA GOMERA: If fog, mists and open fires aren’t your thing, head to Spain’s Canary Islands for some autumn sunshine. And while all the islands offer something special, tiny La Gomera is a chance to really get away from it all. This volcanic island is only

22km (14 miles) in diameter, but don’t let size fool you. Here you’ll you find spectacular beaches and cliffs, and an incredible array of microhabitats, including subtropical rainforest. What are you waiting for? Read more on: www.thelocal.es

Ebola crisis: ten patients Most Spanish Eurofighter go home after all-clear jets can’t fly

All of the patients who were isolated a Madrid hospital after having contact with a Spanish nursing assistant who contracted and beat the deadly virus left the facility on Monday, after being given the all-clear by doctors. A total of ten patients left Madrid’s Carlos III hospital on Monday after being quarantined for 21 days over fears they could have contracted Ebola via contact with nursing assistant Teresa Romero, Spanish national broadcaster RTVE reported. Among those patients was Juan Manuel Parra Ramírez, a doctor who treated Romero at Madrid’s Alcorcón hospital before she was transferred to Carlos III. Ramírez described the period in quarantine as “very difficult” but expressed his “great joy” at Romero’s recovery, according to Spanish national broadcaster RTVE. Also going home on Monday was Romero’s husband Javier Limón, who has called a press conference for 6.30 pm on Monday in which he plans to outlines details of legal action against people who have criticized his wife over her role in the crisis. In an interview with Spain’s El Mundo newspaper on Sunday, Limón said he and his wife had been “treated like scum” and singled out Madrid’s regional

health chief, Javier Rodríguez over comments the official made suggesting Romero had lied about the state of her health. He would sue Rodríguez for sullying the reputation of him and his wife, Limón said. Romero, the first person known to have contracted the Ebola disease outside of Africa, will remain in hospital for several more days, as will one other person who had contact with her and was admitted to hospital with fever, but who has since tested negative for the virus. Romero contracted Ebola after volunteering to treat two Spanish missionaries infected with the virus who were repatriated to Spain in August and September. A total of 4,922 people have died in the latest Ebola outbreak, the World Health Organization said on Sunday, adding over 10,000 have been infected. Thelocal.es

Sources inside Spain’s military have reportedly told a Spanish newspaper that only a handful of the country’s Eurofighter Typhoon jets are fully operational and that semi-retired F-18 aircraft are being called back into full service to meet NATO commitments. According to Spanish daily El Confidencial Digital, unnamed military sources have warned that the Eurofighter Typhoon air fleet is crippled by breakdowns, lack of spare parts and delayed inspections. The claims come just a day after Spain announced plans to pump €10 billion ($12.7 billion) into new defence programs after six years of cutbacks as a result of the economic crisis. Eurofighters were not, however, named in the list of projects due to receive a funding boost. The investment will instead go towards the new F-110 frigates, drones, and the infamous S-80 sinking submarines. Only six Eurofighters in Spain’s Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) service in bases at Morón de la Frontera and Albacete are currently capable of taking off, according to military insiders. These jets are kept ready to scramble 24 hours a day, year-round, to intercept suspicious aircraft in Spanish airspace. The rest of Spain’s Eurofighter planes have allegedly been grounded by

breakdowns, missing spare parts and queues for inspections after reaching the maximum number of hours in the air. The Eurofighter Typhoon was jointly developed by the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy.

Germany recently reported a manufacturing defect in the Eurofighter’s fuselage which could lead to in-flight instability. It grounded its planes and launched an investigation but Spain chose instead to order its mechanics and pilots to perform pre-flight inspections. In June, Spain’s foreign minister José Manuel García Margallo claimed that four Eurofighters would be sent to the Baltic region as part of the country’s NATO commitments. But because of the condition of the Eurofighter fleet, sources inside the military claim that ageing F-18 fighter jets were being prepared to be sent instead. Official Ministry of Foreign Affairs sources denied this and insisted that Spain would still be able to send Eurofighters as originally intended. They also denied the existence of any shortage of spare parts.

Sting musical The Last Ship opens on Broadway

The Last Ship, Sting’s musical about shipbuilding in north-east England, has opened on Broadway to respectable, if qualified reviews. The New York Times described it as “ambitious, earnest... and seductive” while identifying some “nagging flaws”. Time Out New York, meanwhile, said it was “rollicking and often glorious” but lacked “sympathy-generating detail”. Sting, former frontman with The Police, described watching Sunday’s opening night as “an out-of-body experience”. “You relinquish a lot of control,” the 63year-old told the Playbill website. “But all of these people bring something to the process I can’t.” Written by John Logan and Brian Yorkey, The Last Ship features songs from Sting’s 2013 album of the same name. Newcastle-born actor Jimmy Nail and Rachel Tucker, a finalist on BBC One talent show I’d Do Anything, are among the cast of Joe Mantello’s production. Set in Sting’s home town of Wallsend, the musical tells of a group of unemployed

shipbuilders who take over a closed factory to build one final vessel. Its main character is Gordon, a prodigal son who returns after 14 years to find the town and its community close to economic collapse. “Melancholy tones of sorrow and regret saturate this highly personal and intensely felt musical play,” wrote Variety’s critic Marilyn Stasio. Entertainment Weekly’s Kyle Anderson, however, said the show “trots out a series of dirges that lack the dynamism necessary to keep audiences fully engaged”. “This melancholy musical is without doubt a heartfelt, intensely personal project,” wrote David Rooney in The Hollywood Reporter. Yet he went on to call the show “a bit of a yawn [that] doesn’t hold water”, with “a plot that - sorry - simply doesn’t float”. Writing in The Guardian, Alexis Soloski called the musical’s structure “slack”, its book “indifferent”, its love story “lopsided” and its gender politics

“unreconstructed”. But she said Sting’s “folk-inflected songs... are a pleasure” that are performed “with vigour and swagger and joy”. Singer Billy Joel, actor Alan Cumming and Sting’s wife Trudie Styler were among the first night audience at the

Neil Simon Theatre. Bruce Springsteen, Blondie’s Deborah Harry, actress Joely Richardson and celebrity blogger Perez Hilton were also in attendance. Read more on: bbc.com

Hoaxer or high-flyer? The strange case of “Little Nicolás”

says his lawyer, Víctor Sunkel. “What’s more, nobody just gatecrashes the king’s coronation. Francisco Nicolás Gómez-Iglesias, who the Spanish have dubbed “Little Nicolás,” comes from a middleclass family in Madrid’s northern Chamartín district, where he joined the PP’s youth wing when he was 15. He soon began to be seen with senior figures at exclusive places, including the VIP box at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu stadium. “He was always bragging about his contacts; he saw himself as a high-flyer, but a few months ago we began to hear rumors that he was getting into trouble,” says a PP source. His Facebook page reads like a who’s who of the Popular Party, and includes photographs of GómezIglesias with former Madrid regional government head Esperanza Aguirre, Madrid Mayor Ana Botella, and a number of leading business leaders. Gómez-Iglesias organized lavish parties at the house complete with Japanese sushi chefs and an armed Filipino on the door, according to those who attended. The original owner of the house had no idea of what was going on there. “All I can say is that I cannot understand how a young man aged just 20, simply on the basis of his verbal skills, has been able to access conferences and events without anybody raising any questions, even if he was a member of the PP’s youth wing,” said the judge overseeing the case. Over the last week, several people known to have had business dealings with him have insisted that GómezIglesias was who he said he was. “He could verify anything you asked him to; I even checked out his license plates,” says one person. Others say he had started saying that he would soon be retiring. Had something happened to make him realize that he had flown too high, too soon, and that a fall was in the offing? Elpais.com

While Spain struggles with a jobless rate of close to 25 percent, many of the country’s salaried employees are living below the poverty threshold, a new study shows. Some 12.3 percent of Spanish people working legally are members of the working poor, the study from the Spanish union the CCOO reveals. That’s the third highest rate in the European Union with only workers in Greece (15.1 percent) and Romania (19.1 percent) faring worse. For 2009, the percentage of people in Spain earning less than €8,900 ($11,300) for a singleperson household, and €18,600 for a household with two adults and children was 11.7 percent — against an EU mean of 8.4 percent. In 2012, however, it had risen to 12.3 percent while that figure was a mean 9.1 percent in the EU. The figure held steady in 2013 but the authors of the CCOO report pointed out that falling salaries in Spain were responsible for this dip, as falling salaries led to a lower poverty threshold. In 2013, the poverty threshold for single-person households had fallen to €8,100. For households with two adults and two children, it had come down to €17,000. Self-employed people, meanwhile, were in an even more difficult situation with 35.6 percent of people in this group classified as working poor in 2012, against a mean 23 percent in the EU. A photo session together and then private correspondence and inevitably a marriage proposal followed shortly afterwards with a highprofile wedding-in fact two ceremonies, a civil one on 18th April 1956 followed on the 19th with a church ceremony. The film shows the footage of this fairytale wedding between a Hollywood movie star and her Prince. Nicole Kidman was chosen from a number of possible contenders to play Grace and received mixed reviews whereas Tim Roth who played Rainier IIIrd received bad reviews. There’s nothing wrong with the acting and the film allows you to experience the glamour and the wealth with panoramic views. “At some point every fairytale must end. It’s not real love. Real love is obligation.” The plot is deliberately simple showing the 60s as a time when Grace’s marriage had reached crisis point. Naively she had expected everyone to fall hopelessly in love with her and welcomed as the Princess with open arms. Local residents and government ministers were sceptical about Hollywood stars and constantly the media picks up on comments such as “She’ll never be one of us.” Rainier lacks affection and becomes heavily involved in politics especially with the crisis that hits

The Story of the Christmas Cake

The Christmas Cake

The Christmas Cake as we know it today comes from two customs which became one around 1870 in Victorian England. Originally there was a porridge, the origins of which go back to the beginnings of Christianity. Then there was a fine cake made with the finest milled wheatflour, this was baked only in the Great Houses, as not many people had ovens back in the 14th century.

PLUM PORRIDGE

Originally people used to eat a sort of porridge on Christmas Eve. It was a dish to line the stomach after a day’s fasting, which people used to observe for Christmas Eve, or the ‘Vigil’ as it was called long ago. Gradually, they began to put spices, dried fruits, honey etc in the porridge to make it a special dish for Christmas. Much later it was turned into a pudding, because it got to be so stiff with all the fruits and things, that they would tie it in a cloth, and dunk it into a large cauldron of boiling water and boil it for many hours. This turned into Christmas Pudding.

PLUMCAKE

Later, around the 16th century, it became popular to add butter, replace the oatmeal with wheatflour, add eggs to hold it together better. This became boiled plumcake. So boiled plum pudding and boiled fruitcake existed side by side depending on which ingredients the housewife used. Only big houseS had proper ovens to bake in. In the castles and fine homes, people would make a special cake for Easter, which was a rich fruitcake recipe with a topping of what we now call marzipan or almond paste. A similar cake was baked for the Christmas festivities, but whereas the Easter one was a plain cake with almonds, the Christmas one had dried fruits in season and spices. These represented the exotic spices of the East, and the gifts of the Wise Men . Such things were first brought to Europe and Britain particularly, by the Crusaders coming back from

the wars in the Holy Land in the 12th century.

TWELFTH NIGHT CAKE

But it was not a Christmas cake, but a Twelfth Night Cake. Twelfth night is on the 5th January, and has been for centuries the traditional last day of the Christmas season.. It was a time for having a great feast, and the cake was an essential part of the festivities. This was slightly different in different countries, and also at different social levels

Ingredients

Prep Time: 1 hour Cook Time: 4 hours, 30 minutes Total Time: 5 hours, 30 minutes Ingredients: 1lb 2oz/525g currants 8oz/ 225g golden raisins/sultanas* 8oz / 225g raisins 4oz / 110g mixed candied peel, finely chopped 6oz / 165 glace cherries, halved 10oz/ 300g all purpose or plain flour Pinch salt ½ level tsp mixed spice ** ½ level tsp ground cinnamon ½ level tsp freshly ground nutmeg 2½ sticks / 300g butter, slightly softened 10 oz / 300g soft brown sugar Zest of ½ lemon

method

6 large eggs, lightly beaten 3 tbsp brandy, plus extra for feeding Heat the oven to 300°F/150°C/Gas 2 The temperature is low as the cake needs a long slow bake. It is packed with sugars, fruits and brandy and if the temperature is any higher the

outside of the cake will burn and the inside be undercooked. Line a 9 inch cake tin with 2 thicknesses of parchment or greaseproof paper. Tie a double band of brown or newspaper paper around the outside. This acts as an insulator and to prevent the cake from burning on the outside read more about why here. In a large roomy baking bowl mix the currants, sultanas, raisins, peel and cherries with the flour, salt and spices. In another large bowl cream the butter with the sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in the lemon zest. Add the beaten egg to the butter mixture a little bit at a time, beating well after each addition - do not try to rush this process as the mixture could curdle. If it does curdle simply add a tbsp of flour and mix again, this should bring the mixture back together. If it doesn’t come back together, don’t fret, the cake will still be delicious. Carefully fold in half the flour and fruit into the egg and butter mixture, once incorporated repeat with the remaining flour and fruit. Finally

add the brandy. Spoon the cake mixture into the prepared cake tin making sure there are no air pockets. Once filled smooth the surface with the back of s spoon and make a slight dip in the center (this will rise back up again during cooking and create a smooth surface for icing the cake). Finally, using a piece of paper towel clean up any smears of cake batter on the greaseproof wrapping, if left on they will burn, and though it won’t affect the cake, it doesn’t smell too good. Stand the tin on a double layer of newspaper in the lower part of the oven, if you have a gas oven ensure the paper is well away from the any flame, and bake for 4½ hours. If the cake is browning too rapidly, cover the tin with a double layer of greaseproof or parchment paper after 2½ hours. During the cooking time avoid opening the oven door too often as this may cause the cake to collapse. After 4½ hours check the cake is cooked. The cake should be nicely risen and a deep brown all over. Insert a skewer or fine knife into the centre of the cake. If there is sticky dough on the skewer when you pull it out it needs cooking longer, if it is clean, the cake’s done and remove from the oven. Leave the cake to cool in the tin on a wire rack for an hour, then remove from the tin and leave to cool completely. Once cooled prick the surface of the cake with a fine metal skewer and slowly pour over 2 - 3 tbsp brandy. This feeding should be repeated every two weeks up until Christmas. The cake should be stored wrapped in greaseproof or parchment paper in an airtight tin.

“ You came here to play the greatest role of your life. You are the fairytale. The serenity to which we all aspire. And peace will come when you embrace the roles you have been destined to play.” The long-awaited release of this film disappointed critics when it opened the Cannes Film Festival 2014. It was slated. Peter Bradshaw was kinder when he referred to it as being wooden. Bad news for screen writer, Arash Amed and director, Olivier Dahan (“La Vie en Rose.”) In fact savaged is closer to the truth. For me and people like me, it makes it that more appealing. The real-life descendants branded the film a farce criticising it for being “overly dramatic” with “historical errors and little depth.” The controversy surrounds the point of whether it is meant to be a biopic film and the obvious answer is no. Hollywood screen goddess, Grace Kelly was born in 1929 and embarked on an acting career during the 50s, achieving stardom with “Mogambo” for which she won a Golden Globe award and an Academy nomination. She worked with Hitchcock and became a favourite with Cary Grant who snubbed Ingrid Bergman, opting for Grace who was bestowed with an abundance of serenity of all things! ingredients

FOR THE CURRY PASTE 1 tablespoon whole coriander seeds, toasted 2 teaspoons whole cumin seeds, toasted 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns, toasted 1 teaspoon coarse salt 3 serrano chiles, sliced 1/2 cup fresh cilantro 2 stalks fresh lemongrass, trimmed and chopped (1/2 cup) 8 garlic cloves, minced (1/4 cup) 2 scallions, chopped (1/4 cup) 2 tablespoons chopped peeled fresh ginger 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon finely grated lime zest (from 2 limes) FOR THE STEW 2 ounces spinach (1 cup) 1 can (14 ounces) unsweetened regular coconut milk 1 can (14 ounces) unsweetened light

Make the curry paste: Grind coriander, cumin, peppercorns, and salt with a mortar and pestle, or with the bottom of a heavy skillet. Add remaining ingredients, and grind until a paste forms. (Curry paste can be refrigerated for up to 2 weeks or frozen for up to 3 months.) Make the stew: Puree 5 tablespoons curry paste, the spinach, and 1 cup regular coconut milk in a blender until smooth. Reserve remaining curry paste for another use. Bring remaining regular coconut milk and the light coconut milk to a boil in a medium Dutch oven or heavy stockpot. Reduce heat, stir in curry-spinach mixture, and simmer for 5 minutes. Add zucchini, and cook until slightly tender, about 5 minutes. Add chicken, and season with salt and pepper. Cook until zucchini is tender and chicken is cooked through, about 5 minutes. Add basil, and garnish with serrano chiles. Serve with rice and lime wedges.

Remove from the juice and place on a plate. Remove the cinnamon stick and continue to gently simmer the remaining juice for about 5-10 minutes

Have a damp washcloth at hand ready to clean up styptic powder and blood as necessary. Quicking hurts a lot, and most dogs remember the experience long afterward. Don’t forget the dewclaws if your dog has them. They tend to grow long because they don’t normally touch the ground and if you fail to cut them, they will eventually grow back into your dog’s foot, which is quite painful. If you use a nail grinder rather than clippers, use the same method — hold your dog’s foot, turn on the grinder, and grind a little off each nail.

Your dog’s toenails, just like yours, grow, and unless your dog runs around on hard surfaces that help keep toenails short, you have to clip them — if you hear them clicking on a hard surface, it’s time for a trim. If you really don’t want to take the easy option, and ask a groomer to do the job, then you will have to do it yourself. Mick ‘the grip’ Reeves gave an address in support of the RBL and went round those present to contribute to the collection on behalf of RBL and the secretary arranged for a further fcootball card to be taken round which resulted in a further 20 euros going to the RBL pot. On the day the collection resulted in over 90 euros being raised for the RBL and Mick thanked all those present, Bull Flanagan Golf Society and the Bull Flanagan Pub for the support. After having another excellent meal the secretary thanked everyone for their support and asked those present to show their appreciation in the usual manner to Chris Stott and his staff. The secretary then commenced with the presentation.

BULL FLANAGAN GS For their October meeting 28 members of the Bull Flanagan Golf Society headed up the motorway to Alicante golf course which is a very popular choice of the members due to the unique set up of 6 of each par 3s, par 4s and par 5s. The course was in reasonable condition except for a few of the greens which still needed to recover from work carried out on them. Once our buggies had been sorted out we got underway on time ready to face up to all the problems this course can throw at you and ultimately affect your score. It is important to ones personal Player of the Year score that players need to be careful on selecting how to play each hole. Prior to play members had been told that todays event would support the Royal British Legion and that Mick ‘the grip’ Reeves would be at the Bull Fanagan on our return to encourage support for the RBL and as part of this he had part sponsored all par 3s. An excellent days golf with excellent weather for the event also and this was reflected in the scores with 50% of the players managing to reach the 30 point mark. Winner on the day with a fine 37 points was Phil Harris and hot on his tail was Bill Peters with 36 points who was also closely followed by Pat Whelan on

San Miguel Golf Society San Miguel’s monthly visit to La Finca found the course in good condition and fine weather, with only a light wind. Due to yellow tee boxes being given a rest, male golfers found themselves playing some holes off of the white boxes, others off of the ladies’ reds. In general this arrangement meant higher stroke index holes being played from the whites and so playing longer, low stroke index holes shorter. These changes seemed to have an interesting impact on the final scores submitted, with the bronze category (higher handicappers) scoring generally much lower than the high scoring silver category (average handicap mid to high teens), and average scoring gold category (lowest handicappers). Last Wednesday the society played an individual Stableford competition with 2 divisions at the local course Vistatabella which is situated in what many know as the “lost” city, a development surrounded by orange groves in the middle of nowhere. The course was, as is now customary, in very good condition with the greens true and challenging. The course is not the longest but was made longer on the front nine with the “Yellow” tee positions being well set back. The weather conditions were ideal with bright sunshine and a very light breeze. The winner of the Gold division was recently joined member and low handicapper Alan Slack with 33 points followed by “Rochdale Cowboy” Peter Ogden with 31 points and another new member Bob Jones with 30 points. In the Silver division the winner on 29 points was the very consistent Terry “Evening All” Smith followed on 27 points by Tony “ Smokin – but now an electronic fag” Patterson and on 25 points lady

was a good day for the Oggy’s. The “Roy” for the most shots played went to Welshman Mike Thomas. The best guest was Derek Johnstone. The “Nearest the Pins” winners were Bob Jones, Mike Thomas and the ever improving Bonnie Scotsman Ronnie Spiers. A big thank you goes to our match-day and handicap secretary Dave Winchcombe who did not play but was there to make sure everything got off to a smooth start. Many thanks also go to the days sponsors David and Anita of the Quesada Country Club. After the game the players returned to the Quesada Country Club for the presentations, some liquid refreshment and a tasty hot and cold buffet provided by mine hosts David and Anita. The next game is at La Finca on Wednesday 5 November, where hopefully there will be no fireworks, and the next member’s meeting is on Tuesday 11 November at 10.30 at the Quesada Country Club. Audi RS range to go hybrid

Legislation will force future Audi performance cars into using hybrid power

Low-emission legislation changes will force almost all of Audi’s fastest models into hybrid power within a generation, the head of quattro has admitted. Managing director of quattro, Heinz Hollerweger, has said the entire family of Audi RS models will need some level of electric power to get down to the EU’s sub-100g/km CO2 target by 2021. But Hollerweger has confidently said no model in the RS range would struggle to meet the 65mpg target. “I don’t think it will be difficult,” he told Auto Express. “But when we reduce below 100g/km, we have to add some form of electrification. The question is, in which way?” The timing of the Audi model rollouts means that some of the RS models might sneak in a full life cycle before 2020, but others will need to be pre-engineered to accommodate hybrid power in their facelifts. These include the next full generations of the Audi Q5, the Q7, the A3, the A4, the A6, the A7 and the TT. The R8 will continue as a V10. Yet there are more practical financial considerations at play than just adding the cost of hybrid power, with Audi still to give the green light the next RS3 family. Hollerweger has confirmed that the car’s fate will be decided at a board meeting early next month. The Audi RS3 five-door Sportback is locked in, but Hollerweger is pushing for a saloon version – based on the wellreceived S3 – to give the junior RS a toehold in the US and China. Hollerweger is also asking for a (less likely) convertible, to follow in the footsteps of the popular RS5. Any production RS3 will receive a detuned, production version of the absurdly potent 518bhp, five-cylinder turbo engine from the Audi A3 Clubsport quattro concept Audi showed at Worthersee earlier this year. “We tried to expand the five-cylinder power to what is technically possible, but this is a bit too much for series production. A production version would be more than 260kW (349bhp), though.” He also confirmed the

production five-cylinder turbo motor would be pre-engineered to be compatible with hybrid power. “There are no technical reasons why there couldn’t be a five-cylinder hybrid,” he said. Other steps in reducing the environmental footprint of Audi’s top-spec models include changing the next RS4 from a naturally aspirated V8 to a twin-turbo V6, though the next generation RS6 and RS7 will retain V8 power. The biggest questions around Quattro’s powertrain electrification hinge around cost and weight, with Hollerweger implying different types of electric enhancement being considered for different models. “Superconductors could be an interesting alternative for us because the weight is much lower, but the costs are much higher,” he said. More likely is the widespread adoption of electric “turbochargers”, which Audi has demonstrated in the A6 TDI Concept this year. A production version is expected by 2016. “This could be one form of electrification,” he said. “You get high torque at low revs and blow up the mechanical turbo more. It’s a logical development.” Read more: http://www.autoexpress.co.uk

viewpoint

Gremittoot Isolation

The people of Alqueria had been misbehaving again. This time making complete nuisances of themselves across the border and into Spanish territory. The Madrid Government was forced to lodge a formal complaint with the Alquerian administration. The Spanish authorities had taken exception to certain nocturnal activities with which Manuela’s name was linked. There was no hard evidence but the male population of the surrounding area was running scared. The local Priest was exhausted and traumatised from hearing so many exquisitely detailed confessions. The public lavadero at Tabernas also had a worrying odour. The total apathy with which the complaint was dealt led to the borders being sealed. Alqueria became isolated once more from the outside world. Remitroot had been the saviour of the Pueblo on previous occasions. The isolation of Alqueria meant no Remitroot products reaching the world markets. Remitroot Whisky, a favourite tipple of world leaders has in the past led to Alquerian exile being short lived. An industrious Japanese firm, Nipponplonk Inc. had however produced a synthetic Remitroot called Gremittoot. The distilled spirit wasn’t quite as intoxicating and the wine didn’t change the way the imbiber thought nor was it an effective aphrodisiac. It was in fact a poor substitute but one which was tolerated if it meant the disruptive influence of Alqueria was no more. Alqueria had a problem. Without the income from Remitroot the population of the Pueblo was thrown back on its own ingenuity and intelligence. They were fighting a losing battle.

Remitroot had to be got back to the market place albeit a black and clandestine one. The answer was thought to lay in tunnels and tunnelling became a major pastime. The Alquerian genius for stupidity however thwarted all attempts. One tunneller tunnelled out of the Village and promptly back in again, another came out in a Guardia Civil dormitory and a third broke through into the septic tank of Fernando Loosebowelo a local farmer. Several enterprising citizens waterproofed their pockets and tried carrying the precious liquid out in their trousers but it simply leaked through the stitching. When it came in contact with the lower limbs it had an unusual effect. The legs locked and those affected walked as if they suffered from a painful but minor rectal complaint. One unfortunate individual had naval style cross-pockets and the Remitroot liquor came in contact with his genitals. He now sings soprano at La Scala in Milan. The lights burned late in Alqueria. Will the enterprising but not too bright inhabitants save the day? Will they pull the iron from the fire without giving themselves third degree burns? We shall see.

2014 week 5 With no particular theme and a dozen celebrities still left to fight it out, the show was opened this week by Jake Wood and Janette with a Quickstep. I feel that Jake is far more comfortable with the latin rhythms and always looks a little stiff when in ballroom hold he probably finds it rather restrictive with all the do’s and don’ts that are required for this discipline. He displayed a good variety of steps with good kicks and flicks but he needs to remember to point his toes when kicking! However the Quickstep was full of energy and enthusiasm and I awarded him 8 and the judges 31. Next to dance were Sunetra Sarker and Brendan with a Viennese Waltz. This is a difficult dance to perform for any length of time due to the continuous turning and it can make you dizzy, something that Sunetra experienced this week in training. There was great improvement from last weeks show and she took on the role of the dance very well. She was just a little guilty of lifting her shoulders at times and could do with more stretch through the core to open her top line more. I gave her 8 and the judges 30. Following were Scott Mills and Joanne with a Charleston. Bless him! he is a trier and there was a small improvement from last week (even though he should no longer be here!) However, there was no Charleston swivel at all, the lifts looked precarious at best and I feared for Joanne throughout as Scott’s balance leaves a lot to be desired! I gave him a generous 4 and the judges 19. Next to perform was Thom Evans and Iveta with their Cha Cha Cha. Unfortunately, Thom really struggled with the timing of this dance and was dancing the Cha Cha Cha completely out of time. He also needed to pedal his bike more as

he was failing to straighten his knees and at times he looked as if he had lost his horse! For me this wasn’t his best dance and even the hip action appeared forced due to the lack of floor pressure as his weight was being carried too far back. I gave him 6 and the judges 27. Frankie Bridge and Kevin then performed a Foxtrot. This was a smooth performance overall lacking slightly for me in the pressure of either toe or heel into the floor. She was picking her feet off the floor which weakened her overall performance. She also needs to stretch her core up a little more to widen the top line but otherwise a very strong portrayal of the dance. I awarded her 8 and the judges 32. Next to dance was Alison Hammond and Aljaz and a Tango. Alison, like Jake is not comfortable in the Ballroom discipline. She is so flat footed and needs to be able to really use her feet much more in Ballroom. I know she is flat footed but so am I, and I know how much more she could use her feet if she applied herself despite it not being as easy as for other dancers. She did however manage to stay focused throughout the dance and tried to bring the Tango character although there was a lack of the needed staccatto action. I gave her 5 and the judges 23. Next to perform were Mark Wright and Karen and their Samba. I feel that Mark is being handed some absolutely awful music through the series with the Superman theme for a Paso Doble and this week a disco That’s the Way I Like It for Samba. Karen choreographed the dance to fit the music so had too much disco edge for me, that said Mark displayed the party atmosphere

Goodbye Del Hello Henry

We’ve had a very harmonious 8 year relationship with Del, our Renault Clio; He is an abstemious little fellow, sipping his diesel as if it were a rare vintage wine to be savoured, not gulped. He also has an excellent work ethic, is not in the least fazed by BMWs and Mercedes, and will show them all a clean set of wheels up the mountain road. However, he is small, and Pete is finding it increasingly difficult to descend and arise from the depth of his interior. This fact, combined with his 10th birthday and the Government’s Plan Pive, led us to investigate a replacement. Cars, to me, are pretty much cars; plus I am fond of Del. It was down to Pete to do the tedious but essential research needed to find an adequate replacement. Price, dimensions and local availability were the top 3 considerations, after which came a raft of other details, many of which were completely a b o v e my head. H o w e v e r, e ve n t u a l l y we test drove and decided on a Renault Captur, in but josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk bland

practical Ivory, and I must admit I got quite excited. Cars are not like dresses – you can’t try them on, pay at the till and walk out wearing them – all sorts of options have to be decided upon before you can call a car your own. Thus I was slightly taken aback when we got the call that ‘our car was ready.’ My main concern over the new car was the number plate – I have noticed how many cars locally have number plate in which the letters F and K feature, and, no matter how gorgeous, I was not having a car with, for instance FKU for a number. Imagine my relief when I saw our new car was called HZS obviously his name was Henry! If Del were a person he would be wearing an open neck shirt, jeans and deck shoes. Henry, however, is more Harris Tweed and Hunter wellies. Del says Hello, Henry greets you with Good Morning. Del would ask where we were going, Henry would enquire as to our destination. You get into Del, but you enter Henry’s interior. Silently and smoothly we slid away, leaving Del behind on the forecourt. I don’t want to think of his future, but when he reaches the Great Car Park in the Sky he will meet up with several mid last century Land Rovers, a clutch of Minis, a collection of Toyotas and VWs, a Hyundai, a Ford and a brown Austin Allegro with the heart of a Lamborgini, but a lethal understeer!

throughout and his hips were great! The Samba steps in the routine were performed quite well and as a result he gained 8 from me and 33 from the judges. Simon Webb and Kristina were out next with their Viennese Waltz. I found the character of this not quite true as he was ‘skipping’ his side steps. Had he have given a stronger drive on the first step, this would have been flattened out for a far better performance. He also attempted the fleckerl, but not with the correct footwork I’m afraid. His frame was not too bad although he has a tendency to turn his left side away from his partner. I gave him 6 and the judges 28. Judy Murray and Anton then came out to perform Charleston. In an attempt to get into character, Judy had been asked to use her facial expressions more - oh dear! she looked to me like a fish puffing and blowing! She really seemed to enjoy her performance but for me she lacks co-ordination, something I find hard to believe as a tennis coach. Her timing was also suspect throughout and as a result I gave her 4 and the judges 18. Next to dance was Caroline Flack and Pasha with a Paso Doble. Again I wasn’t keen on the music - Live and Let Die from James Bond. Call me an old traditionalist! That said, her performance was very strong and powerful, theatrical and with superb flamenco hand movements and lines. I awarded her 9 and the judges 34. Steve Backshall and Ola then came out to dance their Waltz. For the first time this season it was nice to see Ballroom performed in a tail suit! Steve is greatly improved and his frame was quite good overall. He gave a nice smooth

romantic performance of the Waltz, but I would also like to see him stretch up in his core more, it would make him lighter on his feet and as a result would make his pivot turns look much lighter and easier. I gave him 7 and the judges 30. Closing the show this week were Pixie Lott and Trent with Samba. I’m delighted to say performed to ‘proper’ Samba music. The choreography had everything, it was full of strong Samba steps, the difficult rhythm changes and along with Pixie’s superb body and leg lines was an excellent performance. She just needs to watch her toes which sometimes turn inwards when stepping forward. I awarded her 9 and the judges 35. This week I actually agreed with the judges top and bottom 2. Top were Caroline and Pixie and the bottom Judy and Scott. The public selected Thom and Simon and for the first time in Strictly history, the dance off resulted in a split decision with Len’s casting vote saving Simon so Thom was unfortunately eliminated after the dance off. These 2 definitely shouldn’t have been in the dance off and it just goes to show that the ones in the middle of the table are in a very precarious position as voters go for the top and the bottom dancers, hence a result such as this. I did agree with Len’s decision and would also have saved Simon. So the weak links live to fight another day! Next week will be Halloween so anything will go with the costumes. Until then come and join one of our classes to keep up with the ‘Strictly’ gossip as it happens. In the meantime - Keep Dancing!

Sporting Camposol vs CD Lumbreras 1-2 Sunday October 26 Lumbreras, Sporting Camposol knew what they could expect today. Lumbreras away is always difficult. Lumbreras is known for good football. Sporting missed Ahemd & Juan today. Normally the heart of the defense. Sporting started strongly and put pressure on the pitch everywhere. After 7 minutes the first chance was for Sporting. A brilliant throw in from Daniel Scott, David extended the ball

and it landed just before Moha at the 2nd post. Moha could easily shoot the ball inside. After 17 minutes coach Oosterhof had to made his first sub.The 16 yeal old Nicholas came for Pepsi. But the 0-1 gave Sporting confidence. The away team had a lot of ball possession but it created not many opportunities. The best chances were for Sporting Camposol. It was Daniel Scott with his throw ins what caused a lot of danger. A few times the attackers of Sporting were a few times close to score the 0-2. But every time they came few inches short. Central mid Joseda brought with 2x a brilliant passes first Jose and later David alone before the goalkeeper of the home team. But both had no luck finishing the changes. Therefore the Halftime score was 0-1. With one sub in the first eleven Sporting entered the second half. Pirri came for Jose. With Sharp counter attacks Sporting caused danger in defense of Lumbreras. But now it was Pirri & Moha who came 2 inches short. In the 21 minute, Sporting got a penalty. Captain

Boudia stept up and made with a simple shot the 0-2. After 30 minutes the little defender Daniel Scott was substituted for 16 year old Calum. Calum won immediately two duels against his opponet. Lumbreras coach anticipated right away and brought another midfielder in the field. But Sporting was not really in trouble. The organization was very good. And everyone did what he had to do. Five minutes before the end of the match Lumbreras got out of nowhere a penalty. There was a Little push on the edge of the box. And by this bad decisión of the referee it was a Little bit exciting at the end of the match. Sporting ended up with the 3 points.

Next week a home game against Yeclano. And are u Satisfied, I ask coach Jelco Oosterhof: Yes of course. This kind of games we need to play and more often. True These types of games the level will go up. And we are still missing A couple of players. We have a nice team, but they do not know how good they really are. Says: Oosterhof Is Sporting good enough for the first five: No, not yet. But that is not necessary. We have a good squad, but we also have much to learn. says: Jelco goals: Moha & Boudia Man of the match: Edu writer:Rob

SPORT & motoring Thader 1 v. Daya Nueva 3

Cadetes Allicante 2a Great all round performance sees the points in the bag for Daya The game started at a furious pace with both teams committed to attacking football with Daya just having the best of things. On 12 minutes Marcos was clean through for the visitors but shot tamely and wide. It was all Daya now and a great effort from Marcos on 16 minutes just flashed wide. The deadlock was broken on 22 minutes when a nice little flick off the head of Marcos found Francisco who buried his shot for 1 - 0 Daya. Following more pressure from the visitors Daya increased their lead on 28 minutes when Hugo burst into the Thader area and saw his fierce shot fly in. The home side were now restricted to occasional breakaways as the visitors continued to push forward. On 35 minutes a good through ball found Hugo but his shot on the turn was just wide. So 2 - 0 at the break with Daya well in control. Thader showed a bit more bite on the restart but it was Daya who carried the greater goal threat. On 60 minutes the visitors

Lions Bowl Them Over

Being a member of a Lions Club means many things to many people, there are over 1.3 million members throughout the world.

overall winner Andy Colquhoun along with event organiser Tom Antrobus and Lion President Iain Bennett.

Being a member of the Torrevieja Costa Lions Club means committing a few hours each month to work in the interest of those in our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. It also brings a great sense of satisfaction to be part of an organisation that does actually “make a difference” to peoples’ lives.

If you would like to become a member of Lions Clubs International and more specifically Torrevieja Costa Lions Club you can contact the Membership Director Phil on philip.buckman@ btinternet.com or Lion President Iain on idsbennett@hotmail.co.uk Telephone 966 731 495. For more information on your local Lions Club go to www.torreviejacostalions.org

TORREGOLF.EU at El Plantio

Monday 20th. October saw 32 members returning to their home course El Plantio which have to say is now getting back to as we used to know it. Though there were 2 temporary greens 6 & 7. However, not sure what happened to the scoring as only 3 players breaking the 30 barrier and only 3 managing to win 3 Personalised Golf Balls for the 4 Par 3, Holes. Winners on the day Category 1. 1st. Con Moore 35 points. 2nd. Nick Turner 30 3rd. Tony Mackman on c/b from 4th. Eric Garside with 29 points.

Your local Lions Club will celebrate their 10th Charter Anniversary early next year bringing the opportunity to celebrate the huge difference that the Club has made to many people both individually and to groups and organisations. There are many organisations in the area who have benefitted from a “kick start” from the Lions when they were first starting out and in due course representatives of these organisations will all be invited to celebrate with the Lions at the 10th Charter Night Dinner and Dance.

What’s coming up firstly we are now well into our bookings for 2015 and we have increased the number of games being played over the year with 54 games taking place. However, currently we will be at Vistabella on 25th. October then Alenda on 4th.November Vistabella November 8th. and Altorreal on 17th.November.

Whilst being a Lion has its serious side there is also a very enjoyable social side to being a Lion and this week the Lions gathered at Quesada Bowling for an evening of bowling which turned out quite competitive but essentially good fun for all concerned. Strangely Andy Colquhoun, the overall winner is not a Lion member but a friend of the Lion President who immediately claimed him as ‘His Champion” giving him a gladitorial thumbs up, in the style of Caesar.

We are also pleased to now offer a special deal at Vistabella with a TORREGOLF.EU membership fee paid card play 5 rounds and get a 6th.FREE (buggy extra). So if you would like more information about our Club contact David Winder on 626 774 157 or email him at davidwinder.torregolf@gmail. com
