Letter to the Editor Hi Everyone Someone gave me some very good advice last night, and I thought that everybody out there in Las Filipinas and Orihuela Costa should know about it, as it could change what happens in our area and our future. Let me get straight to the point, I have been told that we have a General Election coming up in May next year, and I know that there are many of you out there, who must be fed up with being promised this, that and the other from Orihuela and getting nothing. Orihuela gets loads of money from us every year, and what do they do with it. They spend it on improving Orihuela. What about us???? Do we get asked if we would like to improve our small area of Las Filipinas and Orihuela Costa? No, we don’t. When did we last see anyone from the council of Orihuela? Do they know we even exist? Or where we are? Orihuela is 22 km away, and difficult to get to if people don’t drive. San Miguel de Salinas is 6 km. (No bus route yet, but working on it) Torrevieja is 14 km. So, why don’t we ask San Miguel de Salinas or Torrevieja to adopt us? What have we got to lose? Kind regards Disgruntled resident of Las Filipinas

THE NOSMO-KING CLUB TAKE A MINI-BREAK

The Nosmo-King club has been in existence for 13 years and been the cause of many lasting friendships. It is inevitable that a like-minded group of ex-pats would choose a few days away together visiting other parts of their chosen expat homeland. On this occasion the destination was Roquetas de Mar, and Andalucia. The coach turned away from miles of rugged mountain scenery just beyond Almeria city to park at a hotel situated by a beautiful beach area and a pristine promenade. For 4 days the sun shone, the hotel earned its stars and the extras of side trips to Almeria and Oasys

mini- Hollywood resulted in a trip to be remembered. On the return journey the careful coach driver from Rosa Tours dropped us at the tranquil beach of Carboneras for a couple of hours, and a photograph shows a number of club members testing out Pensioners’ exercise equipment which was needed to burn off some of the calories consumed at the hotel. If this club appeals to you then turn up at El Paraiso, near Carrefour on a Thursday morning at 10.45 a.m. and learn about the packed programme on offer. You can contact the Club Secretary on:- club.nosmoking@gmail.com.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

This coming Sunday, the second Sunday in November, is Remembrance Sunday, the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. On this day people from across much of the world will pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave Service men and women. Here on the Orihuela Costa, The Royal British Legion is commemorating Remembrance Sunday with a Church Service at the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras on 9 November. Everyone is welcome so why not come and join the members of the Branch as we pay our respects to our nation’s war veterans in the year that

marks the centenary of the start of one of the costliest conflicts in our history. There will also be a march past led by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums The Service will also feature soloist Rebecca Holt while The Phoenix Concert Band will be providing accompanying music to the hymns. Everybody is welcome to attend both the service and the Wreath Laying Ceremony that will follow in the Garden of Remembrance where you are also invited to lay your own wreath or Poppy Cross, which you can obtain on the day. Seating will be provided outside the church by the Ayuntamiento. You are asked to be seated by 10.30.

Spain grows by 0.5% in 3rd quarter

Spain’s economy grew by 0.5 percent in the third quarter from output in the previous three months, initial data showed on Thursday in a further sign of recovery from recession. This was the fifth quarter in a row of growth, according to the official statistics body (INE) which published the flash figure. The quarterly growth figures marked a slight slowing from growth of 0.6 percent in the second quarter. Spain is climbing out of a deep recession triggered by the financial crisis, which led to the bursting of a big property bubble and pushed the unemployment rate up to a record high of 26.9 percent during the first quarter of 2013. The latest unemployment data showed that rate edged below 24.0 percent in the third quarter, the lowest it has been since 2011. But at 23.67 percent, it remains one of the highest in the industrialised world. The length and severity of Spain’s crisis has meant that a large proportion of the population has become

marginalised, living either in, or at the risk of, poverty. A report released this week by Caritas said that 25.1 percent of Spaniards were living in social exclusion in mid-2013, up from 16.3 percent in 2007 before the crisis began. Spain, the eurozone’s fourth-biggest economy, clawed out of its second recession in five years during late last year, having applied radical reforms to strengthen public finances, the banking system and the labour market. The biggest threat to Spain’s recovery is the poor performance of the eurozone as a whole, the singlecurrency area slumping to zero growth in the second quarter. The Eurozone inflation rate was as low as 0.3 percent in September, while Spain’s was negative at 0.2 percent. The INE will publish final economic growth data for the third quarter at the end of November. Source: www.thelocal.es

attempt to auction the ruins have fallen flat. Put up for sale in July by the Catalan Water Authority with a starting price of €2 million ($2.5 million), not one bid was received before the closing date. No new residents will therefore be moving in to the village overlooking the reservoir, where the bell tower of the old village of Sant Romà de Sau still emerges periodically above the surface of the water in times of drought. The Sau reservoir is one of hundreds built during the dictatorship of Francisco Franco from 1939 to 1975. There are an estimated 2,900 abandoned towns and villages across Spain. Sometimes those willing to revive them are allowed to move in for free; other times local authorities or other owners try to sell the land. The mayor of a village in the province of Cuenca recently announced the sale of plots of land to build houses on for as little as €200, in an attempt to attract younger people to assure the town’s future. In the case of Sant Romà de Sau, which comprises 20 or so buildings, an old Civil Guard barracks, a church and a cemetery, the Catalan Water Authority has said it will organize a new bidding process in the hope of finding a buyer. News Spanish bank BBVA says quarterly profits triple

ort Spain’s second-biggest bank by market value BBVA said last Wednesday its profits tripled in the third quarter despite falling over the first nine months of this year after exceptional gains in 2013. Net profit for the July to September period surged to €601 million ($765 million) from €195 million a year earlier thanks to an increase in business, BBVA said in a statement. Over the first nine months of this year, profits fell to €1.8 billion, 37 per cent lower than a year earlier when its profits had been boosted by one-off “capital gains on the sale of non-strategic assets”. The bank said it saw a “nascent recovery” in demand for loans in Spain, which is timidly recovering from a financial crisis which drove its banking sector to seek a bailout. This timid recovery “has not managed

to turn around the average total balance” but the bank did get a boost from the growth of business in the United States, Turkey, Mexico and South America. BBVA reduced the ratio of bad loan debts weighing on its balance sheet – a hangover from the 2008 real estate collapse that plunged Spain into economic crisis -- to 6.1 per cent in September. The results came after two other big Spanish finance groups, Bankia and Caixabank, last week reported rising profits in an encouraging sign for the sector two years after it nearly collapsed. Authorities said on Sunday that the 15 Spanish banks targeted by the European Central Bank’s stability tests had taken the necessary steps to strengthen their capital base. Source: www.thelocal.es

Avalon grows as business expands across Europe

Avalon, the leading provider of pre-paid funeral plans, saw its business grow substantially in the year to September 2014. Driving the growth is a huge increase in the number of enquiries the company is receiving from people concerned about increasing funeral costs. Website and head office enquiries were up by 300%, as were sales leads generated by stands at exhibitions and other events. These have led to an expanded geographical spread of customers and a 99.2% increase in the number of funeral plans written since July 2013.Between July 2013 and July 2014, Avalon gained its first customers in Portugal, Malta and the Spanish regions of Seville, Jaen & Cordoba. The company has opened an office in the Costa del Sol and has plans to open a branch in Almeria, Spain. Avalon is now offering even more employment opportunities to UK expatriates living in Spain and across Europe. Numbers in Europe now match the UK having grown by 42%, from 41 in July 2013 to 58 in September 2014. Jason Gardner, head of Europe at

Avalon, said: “People realise that funerals costs will keep rising. Unsurprisingly, they are taking steps to protect their loved ones from the substantial implications of these rises by contemplating prepaid funeral plans with serious intent. As a consequence, we have nearly doubled our number of written plans in the year to September 2013.” Avalon protects customers from rising funeral costs and the worry of arranging a funeral when the time comes, which can be complex outside the UK. Avalon’s three comprehensive packages, Balmoral, Windsor Way and Britannia, are available in Spain, Portugal and Tenerife. Alternative plans are available for customers residing in Cyprus, Malta and Turkey. For further information, visit www.avalonfuneralplans.com.

Spanish coffee-flavoured beer takes off in USA

A BEER based on a liqueur manufactured in Alcoi (Alicante) has proven to be a sell-out in the USA and has returned across the pond to be sold in delicatessens across Spain. Spigha Coffee Porter was created by Daniel Fernández of Beancurdturtle Brewing in California, inspired by an ancient coffee liqueur distilled in the inland town of Alcoi, after he went on a tour of Spain seeking out historic drinks to use as a basis for his ideas in his own real ale factory. Now the height of fashion in the USA with its own sections in top-ofthe-range supermarkets, it has also seen a revival in its home country. Alcoi now shares the official origin stamp of ‘Cerveses Spigha’ (‘Spigha beers’) and manufactures the

popular Spigha Coffee Porter. The factory, Cervesera Alcoiana, won a gold medal this year in the Monde Sélection awards, run by the International Quality Institute in Brussels. Spigha Coffee Porter came about after Fernández, accompanied by the Alcoi-based creators Pau Aznar and Toni Aló, went on a field trip tasting traditional spirits to use as a base for a new type of beer, before deciding upon the coffee liqueur drunk by the bottle during the famous Moors and Christians festivals held in March in Alcoi but normally in the summer along the coast of the Alicante and Valencia provinces. Outside of the Moors and Christians, a re-enactment of the ancient battle where the Islamic settlers were thrown out of Spain during the Inquisition, the coffee liqueur produced in Alcoi was barely known. An infusion and distillation of coffee beans with an alcohol level of 6.5º, the spirit was taken home by Fernández and turned into a hybrid real ale mix. Pau Aznar from Cervesera Alcoiana says the beer made with the local coffee liqueur, which is now manufactured in Alcoi more so than in the USA, is literally flying off the shelves and they are working round the clock to satisfy demand. If any one place comes close to rolling together everything that’s quintessentially Andalucian, it’s Seville. Here in the region’s capital and biggest city, that special Andalucian way of life is distilled into its purest and most intense form. Seville has the most passionate and portentous Semana Santa (Holy Week), the most festive and romantic annual feria (fair), the best tapas bars, the best nightlife and the most stylish people in Andalucía. It has more narrow, winding, medieval lanes and romantic, hidden plazas soaked in the scent of orange blossom than half of Andalucía’s other cities put together. It’s the

home of those two bulwarks of Andalucian tradition, flamenco and bullfighting, and its heri tage of art and architecture (Roman, Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance, baroque) is without rival in southern Spain. But Seville’s most developed art form is that of enjoying oneself. To be out at night among the city’s relaxed, fun-loving crowds – in the tapas bars, on the streets, in the clubs and discos – is an experience you won’t forget. There are a couple of catches, of course: Seville is expensive. You might pay €80 here for a room that would cost €50 elsewhere, and prices go even higher during Semana Santa and the Feria de Abril (April Fair). Also bear in mind that Seville gets very hot in July and August: locals, sensibly, leave the city then. Source: http://www.lonelyplanet. com/spain/seville

malaga

The Spanish city of Malaga is a Mediterranean seaport on the Costa del Sol in the Andalucía region of southern Spain. It is the second most populous city in Andalucía, the sixth in the whole of Spain and more importantly it’s a major tourist destination. Famed for its rich architectural history, delicious Mediterranean cuisine, outstanding local wines and beautiful sandy beaches as well as being the birthplace of Picasso. Being located on the southern tip of the European mainland, Malaga is blessed with a typical mediterranean climate. Tourists can enjoy Malaga throughout the year, though the enjoyment will be

at its peak if you travel during the Malaga Summer Fair which comes in August. Malaga has some brilliant sites for you to go and explore. However, if you are on a short trip, then the top 10 best places to vist are Alcazaba, Malaga Cathedral, Picasso HouseMuseum, Cafe de Paris, La Cancela, Parador de Malaga-Gibralfaro, Gibralfaro Castle, Casa Natal de Picasso, Tryp Guadalmar and Hotel Larios. Flamenco shows, jazz sessions, shopping, festivals and sight seeing in and around the city of Malaga will keep you entertained. Source: www.malaga.com

Bedroom Basics

A well-designed bedroom can not only provide a calm, tranquil environment in which you can escape the pressure of modern living, but also add value to your property through its appeal to potential buyers.

The emphasis in any bedroom is on relaxing and sleeping, but depending on what else you what you want to do in your own space – working, watching TV, etc. – there may be other elements that you wish to incorporate into your bedroom design. You have the choice, of course, of fitted or freestanding bedroom furniture. Fitted furniture allows you to create your own, coordinated look, and can be useful if your bedroom is an odd shape, or there are awkward areas to be filled. Fitted wardrobes also usually extend from floor to ceiling, creating extra storage space for bedding, etc. that needs to be stored separately from your clothes, shoes and accessories. You do need to exercise a little caution when planning fitted furniture, however, as filling more than one of your bedroom walls with fitted wardrobes may make the room feel a little claustrophobic. reflected in colour and texture in curtains, blinds and other soft furnishings to create a sense of style in the bedroom. The easiest and most straightforward way of opening up any room is to whitewash the walls. White helps to redefine the space available in a room by distorting the mind’s perception of where the boundaries actually lie – in effect, white walls can make a small room look spacious and airy. In contrast, dark walls have the effect of closing the boundaries in considerably, therefore giving the impression of less space than there is in reality. Nevertheless, refreshingly white walls ought to be complemented by bold bedroom furniture colours. The bed in particular must be a focal point in the room, therefore it is advisable to opt for rich, deep colour schemes with vivid and imaginative patterns that will instantly draw the eye’s attention. Furthermore, it is essential that the bedroom is clutter-free and, unless it is absolutely necessary, electrical equipment in the room should be limited to a radio alarm clock and television – peace is essential. And, when it comes to bedroom furniture, a cabinet with multiple drawers or a chest or ottoman placed discretely at the end of your bed can provide crucial extra storage. You need not be restricted solely to bedroom furniture either; bookshelves and/or a small desk area in a guest bedroom, for example, can be an excellent method of using the available space to maximum effect.

New Resort Highlights SIPPs in the Sun

“Confidence in investing in an overseas tourist resort for rental income and as part of a pension plan received a boost this month after the official opening of a new five-star resort in Cape Verde just off the coast of West Africa”, said Richard Way of OverseasGuidesCompany.com who attended the launch event. “Tough economic conditions mean new resort openings in popular overseas destinations have been few and far between recently, while foreign investment opportunities that tick all the required boxes to work successfully as part of a Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) should be welcomed. This makes the launch of the new Dunas Beach resort on the island of Sal a notable development. With most of the resort sold out, a large percentage of owners there have bought through a SIPP, with their property being a part of the resort’s rental scheme paying an annual

return. “Like the existing Tortuga Beach resort, operational since 2011, Dunas Beach is working with tour operator Thomson, signalling high occupancy levels and promising rental returns. A further resort by the same developer is planned on Sal, with more in the pipeline for the neighbouring island of Boa Vista – offering further opportunities for investing through a SIPP. “Investors should talk through the option of a SIPP investment with their independent financial advisor, who will assess the safety of the investment and be able to suggest suitable resorts. With more flexible pension rules due to come into effect and many traditional pension funds underperforming, carefully selected holiday resorts could make sensible options for a personal pension.” Source: www.smartcurrencyexchange.com

Marie Curie worker held hostage in Algeria back in Spain after giving captors the slip hers were waiting in a car, and they took her to the Gendarmerie in nearby Algerian territory.

A SPANISH Marie Curie Foundation employee kidnapped by her family in Algeria has escaped, reports her adopted father. Mahyuba Mohammed Hamdidaf, 24, had been in the disputed Western Sahara territory since late July as appeals and negotiations back in her home country were ongoing. Ex-president of Spain, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, had offered to help, friends and family had set up a petition online and the provincial council had threatened to stop all aid to the Sahara people unless Mahyuba was freed. The Faculty of Arabic Studies – where Mahyuba studied and gained a top-grade degree – at Alicante University called her being held against her will ‘unacceptable’ and wrote a formal letter to the Saharan authorities asking them to help their ‘brilliant ex-student’. During her most recent annual visit to her family of origin, Mahyuba’s natural parents confiscated her Spanish passport, ordering her to give up her citizenship there, and took her money and mobile phone. They told her she was not going to be allowed to leave the refugee camp, where her parents have lived since the early 1970s, ever again. The young woman’s birth parents let her use a different mobile phone to call home, and she was able to ask them in Spanish – without her Sahara family being able to understand – to help get her out. But until Tuesday this week, she remained hostage in Tindouf – which is politically and geographically in Algeria but which its people consider to be part of Western Sahara. Two days ago, Mahyuba asked her mother to let her take a look at her passport, as she wanted to check some details on it. The minute her mother’s back was turned, Mahyuba ran full-pelt across the camp to where some friends of

Her family in Valencia had made an official police report earlier this month in Algeria and this, together with sight of her passport proving her identity and that she was a Spanish national, meant Mahyuba was able to convince officers to help her out of the country. They took her immediately to the Spanish embassy in Algiers and a flight was arranged straight away. After travelling all night with connecting flights, she was asleep when, yesterday (Wednesday) morning, the embassy called her adopted father to say she had landed in Alicante. Her dad Batiste Llopis and sister Verónica heard Mahyuba had tried twice to escape, but did not manage it until the third attempt. “She’s a very brave kid,” Batiste told reporters. Mahyuba was adopted by a family in Genovès (Valencia province) when she was 11 after staying with them for the third summer as part of the ‘holidays in peace’ programme, which allows Saharan children who work hard at school to leave their refugee camp for two months and live with foster parents in Spain for that time. During their ‘holidays in peace’, Saharan kids go out on day trips and enjoy sports and leisure activities, go to the beach and spend time with their host families, often ending up staying with the same ‘foster’ parents every summer. A decade later, the straight-A schoolgirl took Spanish citizenship, but had been visiting her birth parents every summer since being adopted. At the time of her kidnap, she had not long started work at the Marie Curie Foundation in London, a city where she had signed up to study an MA in Humanities in September. Her first port of call now she is free will be the family home in Genovès, but it is not known whether her job and her master’s course in London have been held open for her. It has been a long and glorious summer, but winter, (or as much of a winter as we get here) is on the way. It will get cold and the wind will blow, though not as much or as often as we might have had to put up with in the UK, and our skin will tend to dry out and need a bit of extra pampering.

Know When to Apply Moisturiser

Long, hot showers strip skin of its moisture and wash away its protective oils. Limiting your showers to no more than ten minutes and keeping the water as cool as you can stand can help limit the loss. Lock in moisture by applying a cream or lotion within three minutes of exiting the bathtub or shower.

Pick a Moisturiser with Skin-Repairing Ingredients Moisturisers can stop dryness and even tearing if your skin is thin and sensitive. Check the pot for these active ingredients: Humectants: These include glycerin, sorbitol, urea, or proylene glycol. They attract water by pulling it up from deeper

skin layers, and are good choices for people with oily skin. Occlusives: Petroleum jelly, lanolin, and beeswax are good examples. They prevent water from evaporating. Barrier-repair compounds: These include ceramide, monolaurin, and linoleic acid. These ingredients, often used in combination with others like cholesterol, help repair the skin’s barrier to prevent moisture loss and damage.

Don’t Equate Price with Quality When one large consumer organisation tested moisturisers, it found that both the expensive and cheaper products were equally effective.

Add Eye Cream The thin, delicate skin beneath the eyes produces little of the protective oil that keeps skin soft. Specially formulated gels reduce puffiness and dark circles while they moisturise. Look for a cream with peptimes - amino acids that may stimulate collagen production - if you’re bothered by wrinkling, sagging and dark circles. Try a cream containing caffeine (yes, the same ingredient that is ciffee and tea) for under-eye puffiness - it may shrink blood vessels.

Adjust Your Moisturiser for the Season Your skin needs more moisture in winter than in summer, so you will probably need a heavier moisturiser.

Moisturise Before Bed For soft, young-looking hands and feet, wait until right before going to bed to slather on moisturising cream, then slip on thin cotton socks and gloves. this way you won’t get your sheets oily or rub off the cream.

Go Natural with Olive Oil Smooth a couple of drops over your face, elbows, knees, and the backs of your arms every evening. The oil contains monounsaturated fat, which refreshes and hydrates skin without leaving a greasy residue. How easy and cheap to buy is that? Readers Digest.ca

Cold baths ‘ease aching muscles, but may be risky’ Taking a cold bath after exercise can soothe sore muscles but it is unclear whether this is safe, say experts. Plunging into chilly water can provide a shock to the system and may even be harmful, researchers at the UK Cochrane Centre warn. After looking at available trial evidence - 17 small studies involving 366 people - they say there is not enough evidence to back the technique. There may well be other better ways to ease muscular aches, they suggest. This might include a spot of light jogging or a dip in a warm bath, they say. The idea behind submerging the muscles in icy water, sometimes referred to as cryotherapy, is to reduce swelling and the associated stiffness and soreness that comes with working the muscles hard. The trend started in elite level sport, but it is becoming increasingly popular amongst amateur athletes too. In the studies that the Cochrane team looked at, participants were asked to get into a bath or container of cold water after running, cycling or resistance training. In most trials, participants spent

between five and 24 minutes in water that was 10-15C, although in some cases much lower temperatures were used or participants were asked to get in and out of the water a number of times. Lead researcher Dr Chris Bleakley, of the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, said: “We found some evidence that immersing yourself in cold water after exercise can reduce muscle soreness, but only compared to resting or doing nothing.” But there were too few studies that compared cold baths with other interventions to say that it is the best strategy for sore limbs. And safety concerns remain unanswered. Dr Bleakley said: “It is important to consider that cold water immersion induces a degree of shock on the body. “We need to be sure that people aren’t doing anything harmful, especially if they are exposing themselves to very cold water for long periods.” Leonie Dawson, professional

Skin Quick Quiz The skin is the body’s largest organ.

Picking hair from a mole causes it to turn cancerous.

The skin is both the largest and heaviest organ. The liver is the second largest organ.

Hair can safely be tweezered, waxed, or shaved from moles without increasing the risk of it becoming cancerous.

People with fair skin have fewer melanocytes (the pigment that gives skin its colour) than people with dark-coloured skin. Everyone has the same number of melanocytes, regardless of colour. Your skin type can change during the course of your lifetime. As we get older our skin changes. It may become more dry, less acneprone, develop more discolouration, and show other signs of sagging. Ultraviolet B rays are the only UV rays that are harmful to the skin. Recent studies show that ultraviolet A rays can also contribute to skin cancer. So, it is important to use a sunscreen that protects against both types of UV rays. If you have cellulite you must be overweight. Genetic factors, skin thickness and age all play a role in the development of cellulite. People who are slim can develop cellulite just as overweight people.

The severity and duration of acne are the same for both men and women. In fact, young teenage men tend to have worse acne than young teenage women. However, acne is more likely to persist into the thirties and even the forties for women. There are some dermal fillers (like collagen) that, once injected, last indefinitely? No filler will last forever. Each one will fade over time. Only fair-skinned develop melanoma.

adviser to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, said: “This isn’t advisable for everyone. If someone had an underlying heart condition then the shock could be damaging. “And for anybody with Raynaud’s - a problem of the circulation - it would have a devastating effect on them.” She said it would also be important to ensure that the water was clean for hygiene reasons: “Some rugby clubs have a wheelie bin filled with cold water that the players will use one after the other, even if they have open cuts and

injuries from the playing field.” She said, generally, applying something cool on the skin to reduce pain and swelling was safe. “It makes up part of the PRICE guidelines - Protect, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation - for managing soft tissue injury. “But it is worth remembering that some of those gel ice packs you can get go down to temperatures of minus 20 and if you go to sleep with them on you can get a rather nasty ice burn.”

Isis wants to spread Ebola: security chief

The Spanish government is taking seriously discussions in internet chat rooms on how terrorists could use biological weapons including Ebola in its war against the West, a top official said in parliament on Wednesday. Spain’s state secretary for security, Francisco Martínez, has told Congress that jihadists with connections to the extremist force Isis have discussed on internet forums how they could use Ebola as a weapon against the United States and the West in general. Speaking on Wednesday in the congressional Interior Committee, Martínez pointed to internet conversations of this kind as proof that jihadists treat cyberspace as “an extension of the battlefield”. The state secretary said that it was necessary to combat the online challenge posed by extremists’ use of the internet, explaining that terrorist groups have identified six objectives in their online activities: “Threatening enemies through propaganda, preparing operations, exchanging information, ideological training, recruiting new members and acquiring finance”. According to Spain’s RTVE public broadcasting corporation, the interior ministry number two said there had been “many examples” of threats to use the Ebola virus and other toxins in a new form of terrorism offensive against

the West, referring specifically to three recent cases. Most recently there was the “jihadist chat room” conversation discovered in mid-September in which “the use of Ebola as a poisonous weapon against the United States” was discussed in a forum Martínez described as “linked to Isis”. The security chief also mentioned a series of tweets from July in which, he said, the terrorist organization Ansar alIslam was shown to be considering the use of “deadly chemical products from laboratories”. Finally, Martínez told his audience of lawmakers that Isis’s spokesman had issued an internet call for supporters to kill Westerners, including civilians, by any means possible, including “poisonous injections”. Earlier in October US Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson dismissed suggestions Isis was planning to use biological weapons, including the Ebola virus, to attack the United States. “We’ve seen no specific credible intelligence that [Isis] is attempting to use any sort of disease or virus to attack our homeland,” Johnson said in remarks to the Association of the United States Army. Risen From The Ashes

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Before I start on the back of ‘the box’, I would like to include an email that I received this morning. “I’m sitting outside a bar in Vera Playa writing this on my iPhone. This is a device we have in the year 2014 that enables us to communicate with each other remotely. Since you are clearly living in about 1984 you won’t know that Steve Jobs got fired from Apple and then got re-hired (sadly died of cancer). Anyway, the iPhone is one of many wonderful Apple products. … You have an exciting future to look forward to but I won’t spoil it by telling you any more” As you can see, there was more than a little ‘tongue -in-cheek’ humour behind the comments and it did, indeed, brighten my day, but it required a response to accurately describes the reason for this scheme of articles. “My specialities are computers and teaching, for which I have the appropriate levels of education …. The one recurring issue with many of the people that I deal with, is that they are afraid of their computer. This series of articles is designed to remove that fear and bring an understanding of what computers are and can be used for.” We all value our computer and therefore don’t want to do anything to damage it and therein lies the fear! If you go into many larger business, you will find that there are still Desktop and Tower computers. Not everyone likes the ultra compact Laptop and Tablet / Phone devices! So onwards to the back of the tower to complete the look at what you see! At the top of your Tower, (This is the normal way these things are organised, although yours might be a little different) will be: • The power supply plug socket and if your really honoured, an ‘On/Off’ switch. • Below are 2 small circular DIN sockets where you plug in the keyboard and mouse (Purple Keyboard and Green Mouse). If you forget to plug in the keyboard, the computer will tell you “Keyboard not

connected – press F1 to continue”!!!! What muppet thought that up :-) • We see a ‘D’ shaped socket that has 9 pins – this is the almost obsolete ‘Serial’ port, simply because it is too slow to ‘catch a cold’. • The 25 pin Parallel (Printer) port in its strange pink has been superseded by the ‘USB’ port (a rectangular hole about 1½ cm long) which is further down the case. • The video out (VGA -Video Graphics Array) which is the Blue one. • Then the audio connections which have 3 small coloured plugs (the minimum standard number), which are: • Pink (Microphone input) • Light Blue (Audio Input) • Light (Lime) Green (Speaker Output). Yours may have more but these are the minimum required! • Finally, The connector for the Network (Internet) cable. All these connectors have a design that prevents you from connecting anything incorrectly, so there shouldn’t be any concern about getting it ‘Wrong’ – it won’t happen and you can’t damage anything if you’re gentle while inserting the plugs into the connectors. Why this much detail? Simply because this design has been around since the late 70’s and works so well, that a reason to change it, as yet, hasn’t been found! Laptops are still evolving. The keyboard and Mouse are integrated and the ‘Parallel’ and ‘Serial’ ports aren’t required and have been replaced with USB ports. There are usually only 2 audio ports (Microphone and Speaker/Earphone) and are (again usually) clearly marked. This makes for a compact, portable design. I’m now off to my computer clinic. Have a lovely weekend.

Pompeii Pompeii was founded 2700 years ago by the Osci tribe. The next few hundred years saw the Phoenicians, Etruscans and then the Samnites in occupation. Around 400BC the Romans took control fortifying it in the process. The Appian Way passes within 30km of Pompeii, so goods were easily transported to Rome from the bustling port near Pompeii Pompeii had a cleverly designed piped water system which fed 25 street fountains, private houses, businesses and public baths. In time of drought the water would first be turned off at the baths then the houses and finally businesses leaving the street fountains to supply the populace. Pompeii was a hedonistic tourist resort with as many as 20,000 inhabitants. The surrounding countryside was thronged with villas belonging to Roman elite. In 62AD a powerful earthquake struck the town damaging every building and crippling the water supply. The Emperor Nero was performing in a nearby theatre

Thirteen years after the 9/11 terrorist attack, the resurrected World Trade Centre is again opening for business, marking an emotional milestone for both New Yorkers, the American nation and in a lesser sense I suspect, the world. It was a news story that almost passed me by and no doubt will have passed others by, in a week again dominated by the threat of Ebola, Extremist terror groups and immigration. The $3.9 billion skyscraper that dominates the Manhattan skyline is America’s tallest building. It’s the centrepiece of the 16 acre site where the decimated twin towers once stood and where more than 2,700 people died on 11th September 2001; buried under smoking mounds of fiery debris. Who can forget where they were on the day the world held its breath as it watched the terrifying images of planes crashing into the two buildings and then their eventual collapse – it was a harrowing moment in modern history. ‘The New York City skyline is whole again,’ said the executive director of the Port Authority of New York at the opening ceremony. From the northeast corner of the site, the tower overlooks the National 11th September Memorial & Museum, built in the footprints of the twin towers. Its stated aim is to honour those who perished on that sunny September morning. For years, the grisly pit where workers found mostly body parts was dubbed the ground zero of the aerial terror attack. Now, the illuminated spire of One World Trade Centre serves as a beacon to planes that fly over the city, the view stretches from Manhattan to the Atlantic Ocean. At night, the incandescent steel and glass behemoth can be seen from vessels in New York Harbour approaching Manhattan. The eight year construction of the 1,776 foot high skyscraper came after years of political, financial and legal infighting that threatened to derail the project. The spirit of renewal did not quash memories of the horrific act of terror, but the area has prospered in recent years beyond anyone’s imagination. About 60,000 more residents now live there — three times more than before 9/11. Still, it’s a bittersweet victory, one achieved with the past in mind. The high rise was built with steel reinforced concrete that makes it as terror attack proof as possible. But will it be enough? Will some crazed terror group – whoever they may be - see it as another challenge to their own particular desire for world domination, gained by murder, threat and intimidation? Do we live in a safer world, brought about by the invasion of Iraq in the aftermath of the Twin Towers assault? President Bush declared the US would eradicate ‘the purveyors of evil’ from this planet. Have they? My guess is that the world is as stable or unstable as we make it and that something as similarly outrageous may occur in the future – God forbid – and we are powerless to stop it. It’s the nature of the World in which we live. In this month especially, spare a thought for those who died, not only in past conflicts, but in the horrifying infernos of the Twin Towers. and as he left the building it collapsed after him. Nero looked upon this as an omen of good luck. Although the earthquake was a portent of much worse to come perhaps it was Nero’s thinking that swayed most locals to stay on as the Romans were a highly superstitious bunch. Rebuilding work started in earnest and evidence of this can still be seen in what remains there today. The area suffered regular but smaller quakes leading up to the cataclysmic event 17 years later that’s now made Pompeii infamous. In autumn 79AD Vesuvius erupted, shooting ash, rocks and poisonous gases high into the sky, the eruption was seen from hundreds of kilometres away. A fine cloud of ash rained down from the sky. as much as six inches (15cm) an hour. I remember in my school days being taught that people suffocated on the ash in their sleep. This is now known to be incorrect as their cause of death was altogether

more horrid. As the magma chamber lost its power the huge columns of debris started to fall causing pyroclastic surges of up to 100 km/h of superheated gas and pulverised rock to rush down the mountain sides. Pompeii was in the way of these surges and the 250C gases instantaneously burnt the inhabitant’s lungs and as they died all their muscles contracted so they dropped and lay in foetal positions which are how we see them preserved today. The eruption left Pompeii and the surrounding area buried under up to 80 feet of ash. It was custom to rebuild after a disaster but the damage was so complete that the area was never repopulated. Only in 1599 when digging a water channel were some remains discovered. Pompeii’s lewd past was revealed as erotic frescos were unearthed which were rapidly reburied

as they were deemed too risqué for the times. In 1738 when digging the foundations for a new palace the remains were discovered again and work continued up until a few years ago when the funds dried up. It’s a UNESCO World heritage site but sadly three times in the last 15 years has this certification been called into doubt as currently the place is suffering severe degradation. Three years ago the so called ‘House of the Gladiators’ collapsed and currently less than a third of the buildings that visitors could see in the 1960s are open to the public. It’s estimated that over 300 million Euros are needed to further preserve the site. Mind you with Vesuvius normally erupting every 20 years or so and the last eruption being in 1944 it’s well overdue so perhaps it will soon get covered over again.

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com Follow up from our article about the sentence from the ECJ in which we try to explain who can attempt to claim and who can not.

Recent European Court of Justice (ECJ) judgment relating to Spanish inheritance tax. Case C-127/12 establishes that Spain must stop discriminating against non-resident heirs. We are receiving many e-mails from people who consider they are entitled to make the claim. Please note that not everyone that has paid is entitled to claim. It is quite complex to determine who can attempt to claim: In practice if you have received an inheritance in Andalucia you can only claim if in your case all of the following is true: 1. T he inheritor or the deceased were non residents in Spain at the time of death. 2. C laimants must be EU Country resident at that time of passing 3. C laimants have paid the Inheritance Taxes in Spain.

were direct family descendants or spouses. 7. T he heir has received a total inheritance (in principle we understand worldwide)of no more than 175000 euro in total . If their are various heirs and one has received less and the other more than this amount it is possible to put in a claim for the one that has received less. Be aware that if you claim when their has been no discrimination it is highly likely that the judge will make you pay for the court costs, so even if you have a no win no fee agreement with your solicitor, you may end up paying the governments legal fees. Do not claim if you do not comply with all the requirements above . Please note that the above is only for Andalucia. For other areas of Spain please consult your solicitor. One last note: This claim has to be made using the courts, and it could take a long time as even if you win in the first instance the government will probably appeal. In any case if you comply with the above it is probably worth making.

4. T he amount paid must be no less than 4,000€

Microvinyas:

Ethical vineyards producing wine for the common good

Wine producers in Spain are pioneering a collective approach, where investors can buy a small plot and produce their own vintages from the vines there The idea of making your own wine conjures up images of plastic tubing and vats bubbling away in airing cupboards. There’s a bootlegging vibe to it, which has its attractions, particularly after reports at the end of last year that we’re facing a “wine shortage”, but these don’t necessarily include the taste of the end product. However, what if making your own wine conjured up images, instead, of a valley in Southern Europe, snowtopped mountains in the distance, olive and almond groves climbing up the hillsides and an abandoned, 100-yearold vineyard, that you’d bought for less than the price of a used Ford Mondeo? Juan Cascant, the co-owner of a winery called Celler La Muntanya in El Comtat, a northern corner of Alicante, Spain, is sceptical that there is any looming “wine shortage” (and he’s far from alone). He is, however, very open to the idea of outsiders buying vineyards in the region. Cascant’s business is based on what he calls, in the local Valencian language, microvinyas, 28 small-holdings, each of less than a hectare, which supply the Celler with grapes. In Argentina a winery called Vines of Mendoza run a scheme which encourages wealthy foreigners to buy a small plot of land and, under professional supervision, produce their own label wine. Why couldn’t the Celler, he wonders, help, say, a “retired doctor from London” do the same thing in El Comtat? At times Cascant makes winemaking sound implausibly easy. He comes from an architecture background and says that when he and his business partner, Toni Boronat, started out 10 years ago they were just “playing”. Armed with secateurs to take cuttings, they visited a friend who had an abandoned vineyard and, a few years later, they had produced wines that were lauded by critics including The Wine Advocate. “Everyone knows how to make wine,” he shrugs, “you crush the grapes and then ferment them. When we tried what we’d made after the first year, though, it was pretty good.” Good enough, in fact, that it was given an impressive 90 points by Spain’s best known guide Peñin (90-94 out of 100 means “outstanding: a wine of superior character and style”). However, it’s clearly not quite as simple as he makes it sound. “There was a cooperative that would buy the grapes here in the past,” he admits, “without thinking about the quality of the wine or the authenticity. It was as if you have a beautiful jewel you sell by weight.” Currently most of the 28

microvinyas sell their grapes directly to the Celler. However, there are already three that, although they’re still letting the experts make the wine, plan to market it under their own label. One of these is owned by another local architect, Beatriz Vicent Ripoll. Her family have half a hectare of land, not far from the medieval town of Cocentaina, which, under advice from the Celler, they have planted with monastrell and garnacha tintorera grapes, as well as French import syrah. Visiting her at the vineyard, shortly after the harvest, it’s clear that, even if you’re not relying on wine to make a living, it can still be a stressful business. She doesn’t know how much money they have spent over the past three years but Cascant estimates it’s up to €9,000. A chunk of that investment could be lost with one bad summer. “There was a moment this year when the grapes still hadn’t ripened,” she says, looking out over the bare vines. “You don’t know if it’s going to start to rain and it can all start to rot. You’re thinking: ‘All that work and we could lose it!’” Still, Cascant also estimates that, with the 2,500 vines they have planted, the Vicent Ripoll family should be able to sell 3,500 bottles a year. Could they eventually make a profit? “This isn’t going to feed us,” says Vicent Ripoll. “But it’s something more romantic. It’s about restoring the value of this land that was abandoned.” That’s because the microvinyas project is about more than just money. It’s partly inspired by the ideas of Austrian economist Christian Felber and his Economy For The Common Good, which argues that no business can be regarded as profitable unless it profits the whole community. To be allowed to use the microvinyas label producers have to sign up to pay workers fairly, use grape varieties appropriate to the region, respect the environment and support the community. The “retired doctor” is not going to get rich quick, then. Particularly as many experts have argued that the so-called “wine shortage” is about as plausible as any other appeal to “buy now, while stocks last”. “It might not seem profitable,” says Cascant. “But if you think about people who want to own an ethical vineyard, they’re searching for another kind of profitability. They want the satisfaction of having their own wine and coming to a beautiful place to enjoy it. It’s not sustainable unless you make money, but people buy wine in order to enjoy it. We’re just putting enjoyment in there right from the start.” Source: www.guardian.co.uk

Grow A Moustache For ‘Movember’

Cultivate a ‘tache and raise some cash to fight prostate diseases

The Mysteries of the Moustache

Movember

You see, November – or “Movember” at it has been rechristened – is the month every year in which men around the world grow a moustache to highlight, and raise cash to combat, prostate diseases. Prostate cancer kills one man every hour in Britain and cash is always needed to raise awareness and fund research and development of more effective treatments. The Mo movement began in Australia in 2003 when just 30 people participated in an attempt to “bring the tache back”. Since then, Movember’s gone global and has raised over £30 million for prostate cancer charities around the world. In 2008, 173,435 “Mo Bros and Mo Sistas” took part.

Consider the mystery of the moustache. How does one come into being? And, more importantly, why? It seems many men, usually at a certain paunch-prone age, are struck by a strange and deeply misguided thought: “I know what my face is missing – a slug of fur above the upper lip. That’s what I need.” It’s a baffling phenomenon. But, while usually the sight of crumb-strewn whiskers wobbling along beside jowly chops is a terrible thing to behold, for the next few weeks, at least, the humble ‘tache becomes very noble.

Get Involved Sound like just the excuse you need to break out some frivolous face fuzz? Well, to participate, all you need to do is get yourself clean-shaven and sign up at www.movember. com. After registering as a Mo Bro you’ll be sent advice on how to raise funds and invited to attend a Gala Parté at the end of Movember to show off your furry efforts. Send us a photo of your moustache too! editor@soltimes.com

In addition, El Mundo reported that, up until August, 15,005 applications were received for permits for home reforms or restoration, recording a slight drop, of 1.4%, compared to the same period in 2013. Cabinet moves to block new Catalan ballot

Catalonia’s breakaway president called for a popular consultation on November 9 with same questions on region’s status as had been planned for court-suspended referendum. Spain’s Cabinet decided on Friday to appeal to the Constitutional Court against the legality of the vote on Catalan independence due to be held in just over a week, the newspaper El País has reported. This is the latest move in the game of chicken between Spain’s conservative central government and Catalan President Artur Mas over the latter’s desire to hold a consultation on independence for the wealthy northeastern region. After the Constitutional Court formally suspended the initial referendum set for November 9 following a government appeal, Mas announced that his plans for an official poll could not be carried out, but he said a less formal

consultation could still take place. Volunteers have registered to oversee the ballot for which there will be no official census, with each voter proving eligibility and their name being entered into a database to prevent multiple voting. Voters are to be asked if they think Catalonia is a state and, if so, whether it should be independent. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government had asked the State Council consultative body if it thought there were grounds for a legal appeal against the new Catalan consultation. The answer came back that the vote was even less legitimate than the former plan as it lacked basic democratic “guarantees”. The government’s argument is that the vote is unconstitutional as only the state can call referendums and that Mas’s independence “consultation” or “participatory poll” is a referendum by another name. According to an opinion poll carried out by the Catalan administration’s CEO survey agency, 49.4 percent of the region’s citizens would have voted yes to independence in the original referendum since suspended by the Constitutional Court. Allowing for abstention, the survey team said this meant that the result would have been a victory for independence supporters. In the same poll, 64.2 percent said they were in favour of Catalonia being a state, with 49.2 percent backing full independence. Source: www.thelocal.es

Book review the shock of the fall by Nathan Filer

“ I looked in the rain clouds, fallen leaves, sideways glances. I searched for him in the places I had come to expect him. In running tap water. In spilled salt. I listened in the spaces between words.” The book won the Costa Book Awards in 2014 and was the first debut win since 2006. The main character is Matthew Homes a 19 year old boy suffering from schizophrenia. He has been sectioned and is receiving psychiatric treatment. Matthew is a convincing character suffering a cruel disease, trapped in the ever changing world of mental illness. Comparisons have been made with “The Curious Incident.” Mark Haddon. Both boys suffer pain and confusion which the authors convey powerfully. Ten years previously, Matthew and his older brother, Simon who was a Down Syndrome child, went on holiday with their parents to a caravan park in Dorset. Children were forbidden from going down to the beach themselves because the path was steep and uneven so it was dangerous. Matthew often did things he wasn’t allowed to do and when he headed towards the beach, Simon followed. Early on in the story, Matthew has a fall followed by an aftershock. “By the time Simon caught up with me, at the twist in the path where exposed roots ensnare unsuspecting ankles-I was wailing like a baby.” Amongst many things, Simon suffered from hypotonia, a weakness in his muscles. He was so worried by the fall that he picked his brother up and carried him all

pause for thought For most Churches, certainly in Britain, the Service held on Remembrance Day (November 9th this year) is one of the most popular and busiest of the year. Attendance in fact often exceeds that of both Christmas and Easter, the two great festivals of the Christian faith, as people from all walks of life come to remember with gratitude those who gave their lives so that we who remain can enjoy the freedom we have today. As the years pass, even the Second World War can seem a distant memory and many question the need for so potent a reminder of the horrors of war. But the very fact that we have the freedom to travel and to choose for ourselves where we wish to live is clear evidence of the benefits we have gained from the sacrifices made so long ago. So it is right and fitting that we do indeed remember them, together with those who have lost their lives in more recent conflicts, thanking God for their lives, their service and their sacrifice. And as we remember them, we also similarly remember the life and death of Jesus, so many centuries earlier, who gave his life so that we may enjoy freedom from God’s judgement on all that we’ve done wrong. So not just on Remembrance Sunday, but week by week we, along with many other Christians scattered around the globe, meet together to remember him in the bread and wine, the symbols of his ultimate sacrifice, rejoicing that through him we may be preserved not just for this life, but for eternity. So let’s rejoice at the privilege of being able to live in relative peace here in Spain. Let’s thank God for each new day we enjoy in this wonderful location. And let us remember with gratitude all those who lost their lives so we can enjoy these wonderful privileges today, as we join together with the Royal British Legion, either in Mojacar on the 9th, or at Alfoquia or Aljambra on Armistice Day, November 11th. Baked potato skins with smoked salmon and fresh dill

ingredients

8 small baking potatoes, about 200g (7 oz) each 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 20g (¾ oz) butter 125g (4½ oz) smoked salmon trimmings 1 tbsp lemon juice 150g (5½ oz) fromage frais 1 tbsp capers, drained and chopped 2 tbsp chopped fresh dill salt and pepper small sprigs of fresh dill to garnish

Method

Preheat the oven to 200ºC (gas mark 6). Scrub the potatoes and dry them with kitchen paper. Thread them onto metal skewers – this helps them to cook more quickly. Brush the skin of the potatoes with 1 tbsp of the oil, then sprinkle with a little salt. Arrange on a baking tray and bake for 1–1¼ hours or until tender. Remove the potatoes from the skewers and cut them in half lengthways. Scoop out the flesh, leaving a layer of potato next to the skin about 1cm (½ in) thick. (Use the scooped-out flesh for fish cakes or mash to make a savoury pie topping.) Cut each piece in half lengthways again, and place flesh side up on a large, clean baking tray. Melt the butter with the remaining 1

tbsp oil and season with salt and pepper to taste. Lightly brush this mixture over the flesh side of the potato skins. Return to the oven and bake for a further 12–15 minutes or until golden and crisp. Meanwhile, cut the smoked salmon into fine strips and sprinkle with the lemon juice. Mix together the fromage frais, capers and chopped dill in a bowl, and stir in the salmon. Allow the potato skins to cool for 1 to 2 minutes, then top each with a little of the salmon and fromage frais mixture. Garnish each with a small sprig of dill, and serve while the potato skins are still warm. Plus points Baking potatoes in their skins helps to retain their vitamins and minerals – many nutrients are found just beneath the skin. Eating the skins also boosts the intake of dietary fibre. * Salmon is an oily fish and a rich source of essential omega-3 fatty acids, a type of polyunsaturated fat that is thought to help protect against heart disease. Smoking the salmon doesn’t destroy the beneficial oils. * Capers, the pickled buds of a shrub mostly grown in southern Europe, are commonly used to add a salt-sour taste, and can reduce the need for salt in a dish. Best Dressed Dog?

Do dogs need clothes? While this may at first appear to be a silly question to those who would scoff at the idea of dressing a dog, there are still many dog owners who have seen their dogs shiver violently after exposure to winter temperatures but hesitate to put clothing on their dogs for fear of appearing odd. Well, have no fear. If you are concerned about your dog being cold, there is certainly no harm in putting clothing on him. If you are still on the fence, consider this: Dogs come equipped with their own external layering system, but

some dogs have lighter layers of fur than others, and some are not genetically suited to the environments in which they find themselves transplanted. So your dog may in fact be extremely uncomfortable with the winter temperatures — as uncomfortable as you would be if you went outside without clothing. Watch your dog for reactions to the temperature, wind, precipitation and ground conditions, and ask yourself: If that were me, would I put on a coat?

A sweater or jacket can be helpful during the cold seasons, especially if your dog is reluctant to go outside to relieve himself, but also if you tend to keep your home’s internal heating system set low, depending instead on blankets and sweaters for your human occupants. (And yes, it does get cold here in Spain!) How warm your dog is able to physically keep himself may depend on his breed, size and even age, but if he just doesn’t have a heavy hair coat, there is only so much curling up he can do to conserve heat. Smaller, light bodied breeds, toy breeds, and breeds that naturally have very short or thin hair coats benefit from a warm dog sweater for when they need to go outside, or for just hanging around the house. A sweater can make a significant difference in your dog’s feeling of well-being. Of course, short, thin hair is not the only prerequisite for outer clothing. Dogs that tend to have short-cropped hair — like poodles, which may grow thick hair but which owners tend to keep short to avoid matting — should also be given a sweater to protect them from very low temperatures. Also, older dogs with weaker immune systems and dogs

with diseases that impair hair growth (i.e.,Cushing’s disease, hypothyroidism) typically need an extra source for warmth, and this can be easily provided by a sweater or jacket, even indoors. What matters more than the length of the hair is whether a dog has a single or double coat. Singlecoated dogs, such as the Maltese, might have long or short hair but cannot tolerate the cold nearly as well as double-coated breeds, such as German Shepherds. Sick dogs, the very young and the elderly also must be protected from the cold. Conversely, larger dogs with dense hair coats do not have a need for additional insulation, and would be very uncomfortable if they were forced to wear outer clothing, possibly to the point of physically overheating. Their fur is already genetically designed to protect them from extreme winter temperatures. The Siberian Husky, Malamute, and Saint Bernard breeds are all excellent examples of dogs that are perfectly suited to cold temperatures, while the Chihuahua, Greyhound, and many terrier and pinscher breeds are good examples of dogs that would do well with a little extra outer insulation.

All they need is a loving home !

Formula 1: Toto Wolff says double points may overshadow season

Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff says the controversial award of double points at the final race risks “overshadowing” the season. Lewis Hamilton leads Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by 24 points with two races to go. But Hamilton could win in Brazil this weekend and still lose the title if his car hits trouble in Abu Dhabi. “The last race with double points has the potential to overshadow the season,” Wolff said. “We know why the double points came - and it made all the sense in the world to make it spectacular for the viewers - but now we’re in a situation where it could change the outcome.” Current standings, 1. Lewis Hamilton. 316 points, 2. Nico Rosberg. 292 points. Points available: 25 in Brazil and 50 in Abu Dhabi There are 25 points for a win in Formula 1 and 18 for second place, but the scores will go up to 50 and 36 respectively in Abu Dhabi. Mercedes have been so dominant this season - Hamilton has 10 wins while Rosberg has four - that one of their drivers will almost certainly win both remaining races. If Hamilton wins in Brazil with Rosberg second, his lead would increase to 31 points going into the final race. A second place would be all Rosberg needed in Abu Dhabi in that scenario to beat Hamilton

to the championship if the Englishman failed to score. If Rosberg beats Hamilton into second place in Brazil on Sunday, he would cut his deficit to 17 points, in which case Rosberg would need only a fifth place in Abu Dhabi to be champion in the event Hamilton did not score a point. Hamilton said: “You can’t think about it. It’s a fact that it’s a possibility but it’s not something I’m willing to accept. “I want to win the next races; I want to get as many points as I can. It’s not something I can be thinking about. “If you live your life with ‘what ifs’ you might not achieve what you want to achieve.” Rosberg said after finishing second to Hamilton in the US Grand Prix on Sunday: “It’s becoming more difficult but it is definite that in the last race I have a chance to win.” Ahead of the race in Austin, Rosberg said: “It is a bit artificial, the double points. My opinion is keep it straightforward, which is the way F1 has been forever. “But maybe it’s not contemporary any more and we need to rethink it and maybe it is important to keep it exciting all the way through because we have had a couple of seasons when the drivers’ championship has been decided early and that is the worst thing that can happen.” Source: www.bbc.co.uk

CD MONTESINOS 3 FORMENTERA 1

With the rececents forms of both teams any betting person would have predicted this match as a home banker but Monte are always unpredictable at home and this one was no different to their previous home games. Injuries forced home manager Juanpe to make several changes in midfield and defence but his sides lack of fire power and penetration in attack could see them miss out on any promotion challenge. This was evident as only 90 seconds on the clock Montes VAZ pulled up with a strain and he never seemed comfortable after that.Monte began with assertiveness with Formenteras giant keeper keeping the score level. It was a freak cross come shot that broke the deadlock on 17 mins when to the amazement of the 240 crowd seen the ball beat Lopez and it was 0-1 . Monte then gained some urgency and pressurentheir play with chances by OROUKER, M+A and MACAN and it was MACAN who levelled after he chased a hopeless ball to turn inside and fire MONTE level on 23 mins 1-1. Monte then increased their lead 4 mins later when M+A rose highest to make it 2-1.

The ever improving OROUKER the seen his free kick deflected over the bar. Montes Vaz was subbed for MARCOS soon after a crucial headed challenge by OROUKER pevented Formentera going in level. H/T 2-1 The second half was that of a home side quite happy to sit back and protect their lead at all costs and hope to hit your opponents on the break YONHI replaced DARIO this an inspirational change as monte mins later extended their lead as his cross field ball to DIMITRY was laid to ALBERTO to make it 3-1 which was how the match ended. MONTE SIDE . LOPEZ, YONHI (DARIO) FERNANDO, ALBERTO, DIMIRTRY,RUBIO, MACAN (CAN) MANUEL, OROUKER, VAZQUINHO (MARCOS) M+A...SUBS NOT USED DANI + RUBEN. Next week Monte are away to CALLOSA DEPORTIVA K.O T.B.C. Match sponser was MONTE STAN. SPORT & motoring

San Miguel Golf Society at El Valle

For its weekly gathering SMGS travelled to the Murcian course of El Valle, some 15 minutes driving time from the regional capital and overlooked by the Carrascoy hill range. Perfect weather and a course in excellent condition greeted those attending. El Valle, much liked by many of the society’s lower handicappers, plays relatively long. Typical of the Jack Nicklaus designed courses in the region, the presence of many bunkers and raised greens, several of which have quite severe gradients, makes for a real test of golf. This is added to by the general absence of true rough, replaced by rocky outcrops and desert plants which seem to readily gobble up balls for them never to be seen again (at least in our 4 ball’s case!). Whilst some forward yellow tees reduced the overall distance for the men, the position of pins on many greens, close to or on the aforementioned slopes, made sinking putts difficult for all. With only one player playing to their handicap, it was quite clear that the course got the upper hand over those participating. There was a clear sense as groups came in that the 19th, with its sofas and range of beverages, offered a welcome retreat. The stableford results for the 31

members playing, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Keith Stevenson (31), 3rd Paul Cobain (32 on CB), 2nd Marg Birtwistle (32 on CB), 1st, and with the best score of the day, Jenny Staines with 36 points. Silver Category: 4th Phil Birtwistle (33 on CB), 3rd Phil de Lacy (33 on CB), 2nd Scotty Phillips (34 on CB), 1st Robin Eastman (34 on CB). Gold Category: 4th Ivor Turkington (29 on CB), 3rd Theo Boelhouwer (31 on CB), 2nd Graham Cockayne (31 on CB), 1st Tony Smale (32). Best front nine and not in the prizes went to Ken Flaherty, best back nine to Mike Jordan, both with 18 points scored. Abacus winner, with much competition for the prize, was Mick Roscoe. Of the three visitors, the Best Visitor Prize went to Mark Pope who scored 26 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s went to Robin Eastman (6), Mick Cook (9), Noel Connellan (12) and Ivor Turkington (15). Our thanks go to the staff at El Valle golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters b y logging on to our website www. smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers.

Rubys Golf at The Med

Alicante golf was the venue for our penultimate trophy game to decide the player of the year, and the competition at the top is close with four players in the running. The weather was perfect for golf and the course played well with one person coming back and out on top after his argument with a golf buggy last month. Buck Taylor won the silver division and the overall, Colin Fear took the gold division with best front nine going to Marc Doherty and best back to Michelle Evans fresh from her hole in one at Gran Villaitana and who celebrated her win by

sponsoring nearest the pins on the par 3’s many thanks to Jeff and Michelle for this. These were won by Colin Fear (2) Nigel Wright, Jim McCarthy, Ray and of course it had to be Michelle herself. A great buffet was provided back at The Med where the presentation and prize giving took place and we enjoyed the surprise Halloween horse parade (thanks secretary). Our next game is at El Plantio on the 21st November anyone wishing to join us for this or any other game can contact us at rubysgolf@yahoo.co.uk.

Woman spends 150 hours covering her car entirely in human hair… and it’s now worth a staggering £60,000 Maria Mugno had already set the record for the worlds hairiest car in 2010 The mother-of-two spent more than 150 hours completing the task

Talk about a hairy ride. A hair stylist has achieved a new Guinness World Record by covering her car entirely in human hair. Maria Lucia Mugno, 44, spent over 150 hours sewing the strands of hair to both the interior and exterior of her vehicle to take the title for the world’s hairiest car. Despite originally winning the title in 2010, the Italian added a further 20kg of hair to her furry Fiat to set a new record. Sculpted into the shape of butterfly wings, Ms Mugno and her art assistant,

Valentino Stassano, hope that the additional hair will serve as a symbol of freedom and peace in the world. Chosen for its durability, Ms Mugno prefers to use hair imported from India as it is much stronger than that of its European counterpart But as most women know, buying hair extensions can be a costly process and the car is now estimated to be worth a staggering £60,000. Despite the car being more of a show piece, Ms Mugno still drives it on a regular basis and can even be seen

viewpoint the airship

As all borders with Spain are sealed and the export of Remitroot products halted Alqueria was in an even sorrier state than usual. There were no political initiatives to reopen trade with the Pueblo as the Japanese Remitroot substitute, Gremittoot sustained those addicted for the time being. Remitroot berries, leaves and stalks rotted in Poyato’s warehouse. Urgent meetings of the Village elders were called, convened, degenerated into fist fights and were adjourned. Supplies were running low, tempers were running short and what’s worse people were starting to sober up. Poyato came to the rescue with a bold plan, a rather stupid one but bold nonetheless. He proposed to build an airship fuelled with the gas from rotting Remitroot berries. The gas is lighter than air, the foul smell and its tendency to explode at awkward moments seemed a small price to pay. The airship was to be filled with barrels of Remitroot Whisky, floated over the Mediterranean where a rendezvous with a tanker would be arranged. The Whisky would be pumped into the tanker which would deliver it to an agent who would arrange its sale. What could go wrong? The fabric of the airship posed the first problem. Using silk from the underwear belonging to the ladies of Alqueria was mooted. Unfortunately they are a promiscuous lot and didn’t possess underwear. Manuela even had to look the word up in her dictionary. The now dried Remitroot stalks provided the solution. Shredded and spun into a yarn they were then woven into an airtight

fabric. It was a truly organic craft. Construction, preparation and launching went surprisingly if worryingly well. Christened the ‘A 101’ it soared into the air. The Remitroot gas lifted the craft above the clouds, its nose then turned southward towards the open sea and the waiting tanker. The good ship ‘Carrycrapp’ was soon transferring the Remitroot Whisky into its tanks. The ‘A 101’ hovered above, its leaky system of hoses reaching down to the Tanker’s deck. The tanker’s crew helped themselves liberally to the Whisky leaving them feeling rather light footed from its effect as an aphrodisiac. When the transfer was complete the Tanker sailed into the sunset with its crew giggling in the dark. Shortly after the successful return of the Airship the World Food Organisation declared the Japanese substitute, Gremittoot safe for human consumption. No side effects, hallucinationary, erotic or otherwise had been reported. This of course made the product mundane and it soon lost its appeal. Those in international high places addicted to Remitroot pulled strings and the border restrictions applied to Alqueria were lifted. Remitroot once more flowed freely.

Big Deal

I have a cold. To me a cold is a big deal; I grant that generally speaking one doesn’t have to be blue lighted to hospital when suffering from a cold, but it still is sufficiently debilitating that carrying on with your daily life becomes an uphill struggle. ‘They’ say that a cold is 3 days coming, 3 days with you and 3 days going. Yeah, well……It starts with the sore throat, when to speak, or even swallow, is the equivalent of releasing a lava flow down the throat. That is the first 3 days accounted for. Then the whole thing moves up into the head, where it settles down and spreads out, occupying every inch of available space. Your brain becomes so constricted by the goo now filling every millimetre within the confines of your carapace that it becomes completely dysfunctional; thinking becomes impossible; moving your head in any direction is to invite explosion of the skull, and bending forward is to risk the forces of extreme pressure from within combining with the pull of gravity, resulting in your eyeballs b e i n g forcibly ejected josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk

By Jos Biggs

from their sockets. Even hearing is impaired, due to the viscosity of the goo surrounding your auditory canal. That accounts for the 3 days with you. Now there is only the 3 days going. 3 days? Don’t you believe it! There is no way short of applying a pressure hose that you are going to shift that amount of detritus from inside your head within 3 days! Instead it dribbles out in a turgid stream, necessitating the constant application of a handkerchief to the nose. This is the cold’s finest moment. It still has complete control over your brain, which has as its primary concerns retention of the eyeballs in their sockets and control by handkerchief over the sludge emitting from your nose. Noses are designed to come into contact with rose petals, jasmine flowers and Touche éclat foundation cream, not constantly being rubbed by Pañuelos de papel. Is it any wonder that it swells to resemble a well grown beetroot in size and colour? And then of course there is the cough. It will completely disrupt normal conversation, manifest itself as soon as absolute silence is necessary, and make sleep impossible for you and anyone unlucky enough to be sharing a bed, or even a house with you. It will be with you for weeks, as unwelcome and as hard to shift as a leech at a blood donor’s session! So to me a cold is a big deal!

Alqueria regained prosperity and the Airship incident was never spoken of again.

2014 week 6 There were some absolutely fab costumes and makeup for this Halloween special week and with Zoe Ball standing in for Claudia who unfortunately had one of her children sick, added tremendously to the show for me with her dry wit and ‘banter’ with the celebrities upstairs after their performances. Opening this week were Sunetra Sarker and Brendan with their Jive to Painted Love. This was a high energy very fast jive which Sunetra struggled with from the off, I felt she was fighting to keep up with the music and as a result her dancing suffered somewhat. I was also aware that she was trying to apply the technical aspects of the dance which made her somewhat stiff in performance and was for me not one of her best dances. I gave her 6 and the judges 27. Next out were Allison Hammond and Aljaz and an American Smooth to Wuthering Heights. This was a nicely characterised performance which was soft fluid and graceful as long as you didn’t look from the waist down. Oops! she was flat footed and had extremely poor footwork for the foxtrot based smooth and for that reason I gave her 6 and the judges 26. Simon Webb and Kristina then performed a Paso Doble to a very strange piece of music which was way too fast for a Paso Doble. That said

35

Simon was a very strong male dancer, had intensity and excellent lines despite the speed, the only thing that suffered a little was the shaping - impossible to achieve to this piece of music and such a pity. I gave him 9 and the judges I felt a little mean with 29. Steve Backshall and Ola then danced a Charleston to Dem Bones. Steve and Ola performed some very complex lifts within this routine and unfortunately I felt that Steve was more concerned with pulling off the lifts than with the Charleston and as a result he made several errors within the choreography which marred what should have been a showstopping performance. I gave him 5 and the judges 26. Pixie Lott and Trent then came out with a Tango, again to an odd piece of music. Again beautifully characterised with some complex choreography and apart from some problems with Pixie’s right arm at times, you couldn’t tell who the professional dancer was. I awarded her 9 and the judges 33. Judy Murray and Anton were next out with an American Smooth. I have to say Judy was ok in the lifts when her feet were off the floor, otherwise oohh!! Stiff, awkward and uncomfortable spring to mind. I fail to see how someone who should be so supple is so stiff on the dance floor! I gave her 2 and the judges 20.

By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ Class Info 635584 431

Jake Wood and Janette then performed a Paso Doble to Black Betty. Jake never fails to get into character of whatever dance he is performing. This week however, I found him lacking in strength probably due to the fact that he isn’t using his feet and ankles as much as he should be. He also needed much more shaping in his lines and as a result I gave him 8 and the judges 29. Caroline Flack and Pasha then performed a Samba to Le Freak. This was yet another ‘disco’ Samba, again choreographed to the music which was also way too fast. As a result Caroline was unable to get sufficient Samba bounce action into some of her basic steps which was otherwise a clean, slick performance with great legs and arms. I awarded her 9 and the judges 32. Next were Scott Mills and Joanne and their Foxtrot. He was dressed as Uncle Fester from the Adams Family and I have to say it suited his non-dance!! I don’t know what Joanne is doing with him but for me there has been virtually no improvement from Week 1. Non existent technique and as Bruno said it was ‘Strictly No Dancing’ and I have to agree. I gave him 3 (purely for his character Uncle Fester!) and the judges 24. Mark Wright and Karen then performed a Jive to Little Shop of Horrors. After being in the bottom 2 a couple of weeks ago Mark

has made an incredible improvement. His Jive was so light on his feet, his kicks and flicks and knee lift were superb just lacking a little more bounce on the Jive chasse and occasionally a little too cautious and upright on some of the basic moves. Otherwise an excellent performance well done Mark most improved for this week! I gave him 9 and the judges 35. Closing this weeks Halloween show were Frankie Bridge and Kevin with a Tango. Again, and what we have come to expect from Frankie, it was a great intense characterisation of the dance. Another strange piece of music but it didn’t detract from her performance at all. There are just a few occasions when her core frame collapsed a little so I gave her 9 and the judges 37. So this weeks top 2 were Frankie and Mark with the bottom 2 yet again Scott and Judy. But the public’s bottom 2 were Scott and Allison and as a result Scott finally left the show after a majority decision from the judges after the dance off. With some of my ‘middle’ 5 making a break for those top spots will anyone else bounce towards the top next week? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime come and join in the ‘strictly’ gossip at one of our classes. Until then Keep Dancing!

Deportivo “Rayo” Orihuela 0 v. Daya Nueva 7

Cadetes Alicante 2A Daya in Seventh Heaven After a very slow start Daya increased their tempo when a good run out of defence by Francisco on 6 minutes saw his cross met by Angel whose fierce goal bound shot was somehow cleared by the head of a “Rayo” defender. It was now all Daya and on 15 minutes Alberto was

clean through on goal, his well struck shot produced a great one handed save by the home side’s keeper. Orihuela should have done better with a good chance from a corner on 18 minutes. The visitors opened the scoring on 20 minutes when Jose raced on to a great through ball and gave the keeper no chance to repeat his save

of earlier. Daya should really have pushed on following this goal but seemed content to sit on their one goal lead. This allowed “Rayo” to push forward more and gain in confidence. On 30 minutes David played a great ball out to Francisco who scampered down the right, his pin point cross was met by the head of Marcos but what should have been an easy chance was turned into a bad miss ! Then on 36 minutes Hugo’s fiercely struck shot rebounded back off the crossbar and was scrambled away. With minutes to go to the break, Jose hit a speculative shot that the home side’s keeper misjudged and the ball went through his legs for 2 - 0 Daya at the break. After the break the visitors were a different side and it did not take them long to increase their lead. Following some good inter-passing by the Daya midfield the ball was played through to Bruno who made it 3 - 0 on 44 minutes. Marcos added a fourth on 50 minutes and the game was effectively over for the home side. Angel burst through into the “Rayo” area on 55 minutes but his superb effort was just too

high. Chance after chance fell to the visitors but poor finishing was the order of the day. There was little coming from the home side now and surely Daya must score some more goals ? On 65 minutes Orihuela did create a couple of chances that Daya dealt comfortably with. Angel produced a great piece of individual skill, he beat three/four defenders before firing home the visitors’ 5th goal on 68 minutes. Jose, who was chasing his hat-trick ran the defence ragged but his shot hit an upright! Francisco added a 6th on 72 minutes to cap a great game for him. The 7th goal was an own goal, although Jesus was pressurising the defender from a corner. So 7 - 0 final score and a very comfortable win for Daya. The home side’s keeper, who I understand had not played in goal before had an excellent game. So another good all round Daya performance with Francisco just getting the nod as Man of the Match. SPORTING CAMPOSOL WINS AGAIN Full Alarm System Full CCTV Fully Insured You are welcome to visit our premises to view before parking

Mazarron 02-11-2014 Sunday 17 o clock sharp Sporting Camposol vs Yeclano. Yeclano is one of the teams with a lot of youngsters. Sporting started very well with a lot of presure. Yeclano started very nervous and sloppy. In the 2th minute of the game right striker David received the bal and gave a good pass towards Jose, Jose stayed calm and scored the 1-0. After that it was Sporting that tried to play football. Yeclano stept back and waited. Left striker Pirri zigzagged time and time again through the defense. But had no luck with his finish. Therefore it stayed 10. After half an hour left midfielder Dani received the ball and thought.... let´s try a shot of 25 meters. And that was a good idea. Because with a big bang he brought the score to 2-0. After that it was messy with lots of good will but also with many wrong choices.. In the second half Yeclano started to play better football, but gave much space away. Sporting didn’t know what to do with that. The defense of Sporting held strong defence an Yeclano could

not create any oppertunity. Sporting had the oppertunity to score the 3-0 and 4-0 but the final clever pass was missing. In the 59th minute the organisation totally disappeared. The midfield players where to far away. And thereby a lot of space became availble for the defense. And Yeclano could get through the defense of Sporting. And brought the score at 2-1. Because again Sporting did not know to exploit the opportunities it became again a nervous end of the match. But the opponent was not really dangerous. And again three points for Sporting Camposol. Next week, the difficult away game against Sucina. Coach Jelco Oosterhof had mixt feelings after the game. “I am happy with the 3 points but if we played a little more disciplined we won the game very simple” I know we can play so much better. But ok we are groing into a process, especially the youngsters Daniel, Nick, Calum & Pirri are gettin better by the week” Writer : Rob Photo’s Ted Oddy

Ten Pin Bowling League Week Five played 28 October 2014 As the league moved into week five, first took on third as Los Bandidos played Split Happens. It was SH who got the better of LB and, with Gary Walsh bowling a season high scratch series of 567 and, Marion Haynes rolling a 575 handicap series, SH were comfortable 6 – 2 winners. Maurice Allen of LB continued his fine start with a 598 scr series. Ingrid Wilms of Crazy Pinz led her team from the front against RightMoveInsurance and, with a 198 scr game and 650 h/c series, ensured CP came out 6 – 2 winners. Even RMIs Stewart Hamills 581 h/c series, RMI couldn’t quite overhaul CP. Team Finland had hoped to continue their upward progress and, cement their league position but, Lucky Strike had other ideas. With all three LS bowlers bowling 560+ h/c series, LS took out TF 6 – 2. Splash started the night on top of the league and, maintained their top spot with a hard fought 6 – 2 win over Belgas Torrevieja 2. Had it not been for Juanjo Carral, Sp would have struggled but, with his scr games of 231, 234 and

221 he took the nights scr and h/c high series, ensuring a SP win. After a pre match ‘team talk’ from the Lge Sec, Los Lobos responded with a great 6 – 2 win over Caballo Negro. All three games were close and, only 8 pins seperated the two teams, at the end of the game. Ron Jewell of LL increasing his scr high game to 165 and h/c series to 564. The Med Bistro & Bar El Raso were determined to stop their slide down the league and, with Tony Ray ‘using the right ball’ and claiming a 277 scr game and 717 h/c series, they managed to do just that, with a comprehensive 8 – 0 over Juans’ Warriors. MBB also took all the teams highs on the night. Finally, the most improved team in the league, The Dreamers, took on the Mixers. Bowling their team high games and series so far this season and, even taking into account a superb 223 scr game from Inga Soderstrom of TM, TD came out 6 -2 winners. Finally, good luck to some our league bowlers next week, who are travelling to the ‘Rock of Gibraltar’ to take on allcomers in the ‘Rock Open’.

CD Benijofar v CD Montesinos

After last weeks disappointng result Monte continued their impressive away form with a solid performance against a stubborn Benijofar side who refused to lay down even down to nine men in the last five minutes they still battled to their credit. Early exchanges were even as both sides sussed each other out Montes EL GATO Lopez was the first to make a credible save. But it was Montes MACAN making his first Monte appearance for 2 years who got the travelling support of 60 + cheering as his vision was aspiring a great pass seen vaz go into the penalty area only to be awarded a very dubious spot kick which for the second week running he missed. Monte continued to press and near chances by Macan and Vaz then them haunted as Benijofars first serious attack ended with a goal with the help of a deflection off Manuel. 1-0. Monte plugged away and got their rewards on the stroke of half time as Fernando fed a glorious pass to VAZ who smashed the ball into the net it ended H/T 1-1. Benijofars hard tackling tactics began to take their toll as the official started to dish out yellow cards at will . VAZ went close again as did Rubio from distance but all credit must go to young improving OROUKER who was a make shift defender in place of Angel who gained all the praise of both sets of supporters for his solid no nonsense mature performance he never put a foot wrong

throughout the match and it was his pass to M+A who set up Vaz to score his and montes second with a deft finish 1-2. Yonhi was subbed for MARCOS and this had an immediate impact a foul on him seen a second yellow and Benijofar were reduced to 10 men. Seconds later a free kick by Marcos seen Monte increase thier lead 1-3. The home side then scored on the 80th minute then were reduced to 9 men after a rash challenge by their n0 6. Monte seen the game out for a good away win.Montes strong travelling support always brings out the extensive support of the home side which we all like to see. CD ESPARRAGAL 1 MAZARRON FC 0

Mazarron lost for the second week running losing 1-0 at CD Esparragal who leapfrogged above Mazarron in the league, leaving the visitors in eighth position but still only one point off a play-off place. Without top scorer Tolo, Mazarron welcomed back crowd favourite Cristian after his brief spell in France and gained an early corner which came to nothing. Esparragal had most of the play in the first twenty minutes with Carrasco in the Mazarron goal dealing competently with anything thrown out him. Most of Mazarron’s attacks were constructed by Cristian but they were unable to carve out and clear cut opportunities. On 25 minutes the Mazarron defence managed to scramble the ball off the goal line and the resultant corner was wasted by Esparragal. Most of the attacking for the remained of the first half was by Esparragal but Mazarron’s first half performance had been much improved on recent weeks. The second half began in similar vein with Esparragal on the attack with occasional breaks by Mazarron and

especially by the young substitute Esteban who made some exciting forays down the right wing, one of which ended with a shot from a narrow angle which was saved by the Esparragal keeper. The only goal of the game came after 60 minutes when a through ball dissected the Mazarron defence and Francisco ran on to steer the ball past Carrasco. For some reason at or about the 85th minute Mazarron decided that they had to do something about the one goal deficit and mounted attack after attack on the Esparragal defence, all the forwards and substitutes showing up well in the opposition penalty area. However, all of this came far too late and the referee blew with only a minute of added time.Team: Carrasco, Alfonso, Antonio Jose, Dani, Mateo, Israel (Chema), Liders, Cristian, Diego, Andreu (Stalin), Juanillo (Esteban) Man of the Match : Mateo Mazarron are at home to La Hoya Lorca CF next weekend.

DS BARBARIANS RFC GROWING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

The newest rugby team on the Costa Blanca is beginning to grow with new players coming down training every week, especially juniors, which are very important to have a solid base in the club. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome as well as beginners to experience players the more the merrier as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport, and also bond after training in the nearest bar for a drink and chat, just how rugby should be. This week we have a meeting with one of the local councils and are hoping that they can help us out, as well as meetings with future sponsors as soon as we get a permanent ground to play and train on. So watch this space and hopefully in next week’s edition we will

have good news to tell everyone. So looking forward to seeing plenty of people down at Guardamar beach at 20.00 on Monday night in front of the restaurants, remember everybody is welcome who want to train and play rugby. The training times will vary as soon as we are able to get a ground to train on, but for now we are all training at the same time. For more information contact Saul on 634 042 913 or Dutch on 692 767 242 or come and see me at Zoco market on Sunday, third row in form the main road at the far end, also for all of your rugby branded clothing and playing gear, and anything you want to know about rugby in the area.

LO CRISPIN GOLF SOCIETY

El Plantio - 29.10.14 Today we played for out last major Trophy of 2014, the Nominated Pairs. This competition is sponsored by Mick Budd who presented the prizes and commemorative medals and also this year we remembered our war heroes by making a collection for the Royal British Legion, so poppies were on show everywhere. Mick Reeves, fondly known as Mick the Gripp attended to evening function and thanked everyone for their support. On to the golf of the day, the Nominated Pairs is so called because members can choose their own partners for a better ball competition. Not everyone chose a partner, preferring to leave it to fate, or should I say, to the Captain to give them a partner. The game was well supported with a perfect complement of 40 players who set out in a beautiful aqueous light and as is the way at El Plantio those on the first tee had to try and forget the gaze of the rest of the players watching in the background, whilst trying to escape the treacherous out of bounds to the right. There was still plenty of dew on the course so the direction of the ball could be seen easily by the amount of water being thrown up by the path of the ball, but of course we are in Spain so the course quickly dried out and normal conditions prevailed. El Planto has plenty of palm trees lining the fairways and for some these

proved to be magnetic, as balls have a habit of being drawn to them and staying lodged there. The winners who rose above these trials and tribulations were: 1st Ray Brown and Tony Ellis with 46pts 2nd Eddy Downing and Harry Wilcock 44 pts 3rd Bob Berry and Mick Budd with 42 pts Nearest the pins: Susan Smith hole 7, Dave Keating hole 9, Dave Norton closest in three hole 12 and Eddy Downing closest in 2 on hole 16. The 2s pot was a double rollover so the only two players to get a two received €50 each, the lucky people were Tony Ellis and Sue Smith. The free game draw was won by Eddy Scott. Members and partners met in the evening at the Lo Crispin Tavern for the presentation, after which we all enjoyed a meal and lively entertainment from Cherry B. Thanks for everyone who supported the day and also for those who made donations to the British Legion. Christmas will be here soon and all games and function information has been provided in the Christmas Newsletter.

Torrevieja U3A meeting

At our monthly meeting on Monday, October 27th, Guardia Traffic Policeman, Francisco Morales, returned to give us a second talk on Driving In Spain complete with diagrams and photographs. The information he offered ranged from dealing with Spanish roundabout rules, the rights of cyclists, what to do when you break down and the correct documentation for a car in Spain. We are hoping to get this information on our website shortly as the talk was both informative and useful. He did remind us that roundabout etiquette still remains an object of awe and wonder despite the rules he gave us so caution at all times was advised. He also advised that any person who had bought a car from Auto Corleone should contact the police if they had any concerns over their purchase from this group. We have added a second feature to our speaker section when a selection of local service providers across all areas will have the chance to come and talk to us about what help and

(in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Alenda 30th October 2014.

For this month’s meeting a group of 32 players visited the established course at Alenda taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The course was in excellent condition although the greens were slower than expected which caught out many of the players. Today was the poppy appeal and the players raised in excess of €60 on the day and in addition Karen Matthews one of our lady members is having her hair shaved for children in need and we raised €100 for that charity event also so well done all the society members.

The greens, yes, the greens….they were faster than food disappearing off of Colin Marsden’s plate and there were many tales of putts from inside 12 inches being missed. However, we cannot complain at the price that was obtained by our Match Secretary who secured a walking price of just 50€ to play the North Course and he has secured the same price for the South Course next month. There were 5 NTP’s and although all

People had an opportunity to talk further with her at the end of our meeting. We are hoping to encourage local service providers to come and talk to us and explain what help and support expatriates are entitled to and can access.

were won and it was no surprise that no player achieved a “Two” for the 2’s pot. It was hard to enough to hit and stay on the Par 3’s let alone putt for a 2 if you did achieve that feat. A sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels went to Kjell Aasebo, Tove Roed, Steve Higgins, Ian Parkinson and Paul Fairclough. The day’s Best Guest was Lars Sandgren with a fine 36 points. The Silver Division was a close fought affair and it only needed 27 points for Eddie Miller to claim 4th spot. 3rd place saw John Hillier with the same score, but a better back nine than Eddie’s. The runner-up slot went to the consistent Colin Marsden with 31 points and only one point behind Kjell Aasebo who took top slot with 32

Dog of a Day Trophy – Martin Jones After the game we returned to the Lo Marabu, which is located at Dona Pepa, Quesada for a welcome meal prepared by the bar and the prize presentation and we give our thanks for their continued support. Our next fixture is the social day at Alenda on 10th November 2014 followed by the monthly event at Altorreal on27th November 2014. To be fair, the Gold boys didn’t fare much better and 28 points was enough for Arne Hansson to take 4th place. 31 points saw Ray Eiken pushed in to 3rd place on the countback by Bill Starkey who took second spot with the same points tally. This left Dave Lethaby’s 33 more than enough to take the top slot in the Gold Division.
