Spain’s youth jobless rate Europe’s highest The unemployment rate for people aged under 25 was 53.8 percent in October, according to figures published on Friday but the EU’s statistics body Eurostat. That figure is down from the 55.5 percent seen in the third quarter of 2013 but still puts Spain in top place ahead of second-ranked Greece where the rate was 49.3 percent in August — the last month for which Greek figures are available. It also means Spain’s youth jobless rate is more than seven times Germany’s figure of 7.7 percent. The next lowest rate is the Netherlands at 9.7 percent. The EU average for youth unemployment in October was 21.6 percent, down from
23.3 percent a year earlier. The Eurostat figures show there 4.98 million people aged under 25 officially listed as out of work in the European Union, or 504,000 fewer than a year ago. A recent survey showed six out of ten young Spaniards were seriously considering moving overseas in their search for work. The same survey showed young Spaniards were among the most pessimistic in Europe with just 29 percent saying they though they would have a better life than their parents. Decorating / Painting Your Home For Christmas What are your furniture needs?
Only about 5 weeks to Christmas, where does the time go, I am sitting here and still not found the winter clothes yet let alone order the logs for the fire and expected to get organised for Christmas! England has been in a flurry since September over the most commercial celebration of the year. Christmas cards, presents, decorating the tree and food shopping and on the list goes, all to be completed by the 25th December and you can’t be late or it will all be over in the blink of an eye. Family and friends are coming so have you men been told to get the paint pots and brushes out with her in doors holding the ladder with whip in hand! It all needs to be done before the Xmas decorations go up so get a move on! Does it stop there – No. Thoughts go back to last Christmas where there were not enough matching chairs and the table was not big enough for all that lovely grub. The answer is a new table and chairs of course. The dining room is not large enough for a bigger table all year round. However you could have a table with extending leaves that grows not only for Christmas but for Easter and when the family comes to visit, not forgetting those dinner parties you will have in the New Year. There is a selection of tables you can choose from in so many different woods and colours, frosted glass, clear glass, black glass and white high gloss finish. They all come in different shapes and sizes, us girls can keep up with all this knowledge and happy to go shopping to find the right table for your room. BUT the men are not so happy, worrying paint their about brushes getting dry and running out of time to do the allotted job of painting. The table is now sorted, now for the chairs and you can hear the men raising their eye brows without looking at their little tortured faces as this selection is bigger than the tables. As you say to your husband do we want leather chairs as they come in red, black, white, brown, grey or even silver? And remember the legs
come in different colours too. We could have wooden chairs with or without seat pads? Carvers or no carvers. There again we could have leather and chrome or PVC and chrome, they are cheaper. Need to try before you buy your chairs to check they are comfortable and suit your tastes, backs or bums. While you are making all these decisions ladies please take pity on your men as they really are not good at multi tasking. You have taken them on a difficult path of painting a room which is not painted yet to buying table and chairs, which they have not quite got their heads around yet as they were hoping to watch the grand prix and enjoy it with a beer. SANTA’S LITTLE HELPERS SUPPORT FOR LOCAL CHARITIES AT LA SIESTA CHURCH
Stallholders dressed as elves, angels, fairies, Santa’s little helpers, etc gave the Christmas Fayries Fair at La Siesta Church on November 22nd an extra Christmassy feel. A small brass group played suitable music just like you might find on the corner of any English street playing Christmas carols lent a nostalgic air. All that was lacking was a flurry of snow!
Thanks to the support the Ladies Friendship Group received from those who came along to join in the Fun of the Fayries the magnificent sum of €1750 was raised. This Ladies Group support Reachout Charity on a weekly basis with help to prepare a lunch for homeless, hungry people. With only 4 weeks to go before the final, there is no longer any room for error. This weeks show was an Around the World special with all the performances being inspired by different countries. Any poor dances could spell disaster for practically any of this years celebrities as there are a number still in the running to lift the coveted glitter ball trophy.

Opening the show this week were Pixie Lott and Trent to ‘Tulips from Amsterdam’ and a Viennese Waltz. This was elegant and smooth with great transitions between the Viennese steps. The natural turns, reverse turns, pivots and fleckerls together with assistance from additional dancers gave this a wow opening to the show. I awarded Pixie 9 and the judges 38. Next to dance were Mark Wright and Karen who came out with a Salsa to ‘Viva Las Vegas’ and what a great party atmosphere he created. A very entertaining dance packed with lifts and tricks my only criticism was that in hold his basic Salsa was very stiff and lacking hip action which was present in solo choreography. I gave him 8 and the judges 32. Next to perform were Sunetra Sarker and Brendan with a Rumba to Girl from Ipanema. This was a nearly but not quite performance. Sunetra had the foot and leg action correct but because her weight was too far back she lacked the strength necessary to really drive this dance, the hips were there but again needed more power. I gave her 7 and the judges 27. Following were Caroline Flack and Pasha with a Charleston to ‘Constaninople’. This was excellent, quirky with great lifts and tricks, good legs and feet, great lines and it was a very enjoyable performance. I awarded her a 10 and the judges 39. Next out were Simon Webbe and Kristina with a Waltz to Edelweiss. Simon is showing his versatility at being able to perform both Ballroom and Latin now. His frame was very good albeit he did occasionally use his left arm to lead with. That said is he going to come up on the rails
in the last few weeks? Only time and dance will tell. I gave him 8 and the judges 38. Frankie Bridge and Kevin then performed a Jive to Surfin’ USA. For me despite great knee lift, kicks and flicks, because Frankie was lacking bounce before her first beat, her basic Jive was a bit wooden and as a result she was slightly behind the music all the way through. It was however packed full of Jive steps and high energy. I awarded her 8 and the judges 36. Closing this weeks show were Jake Wood and Janette with an Argentine Tango to Zorba the Greek. Whoever picked this piece of music for this dance wants shooting!!! Such was the choreography that there was more ‘Greek’ style dancing than Argentine Tango and his performance really suffered as a consequence and could put him in danger of the bottom 2. He also messed up the choreography in a couple of places but it just didn’t work. I gave him 7, the judges 29. This week the bottom 2 were Sunetra and Jake for both myself and the judges. Prior to the show I would have said Sunetra and Mark so it just shows how critical the dance performed and the piece of music can impact greatly on a result. The public had Sunetra and Mark in the bottom 2 and after the dance off Sunetra left the show with a unanimous vote from the judges leaving Mark to carry on for another week. Can’t wait for next weeks show can anyone take a leap ahead of their competition at this stage? Or have we already seen the best? Do you have a favourite this year? I think it is too close to call, for me there are still 4 possible contenders and it could still go any way. In next weeks quarter final, in addition to their normal dance there is to be a ‘Waltzathon’ with all couples dancing together on the floor at the same time. Exactly the same as a Ballroom competition. The winner will gain 6 points with second 5 points etc. so it will have consequences on the leader board for the successful couple. Come and join in the ‘Strictly’ gossip at one of our great classes but in the meantime Keep Dancing!

PHOENIX CONCERT BAND
The Phoenix Concert Band have recently been busy appearing at various venues for the Royal British Legion commencing with a Gala Concert at the Municipal Theatre in aid of the “Poppy Appeal” A successful night to a full house, with the audience shouting more when the band played 1812 overture, their final number, The band played an encore by repeating the 1812 overture. A receptive audience sang songs from the two World Wars. Their next engagement was to play for the Remembrance Service at the Church at Mil Palmeras, for Orihuela Costa Branch of the Royal British Legion following this on the 11th. November they appeared at The Aula Cultura Theatre, Hondon de las Nieves for the Hondon Branch The band are doing a number of Carol Services starting on the 4th.December at Los Balcones Church, followed by Spiritual Carol Service at Benjofar on Dec.9th. Torrevieja Christian Fellowship Church. 10th.Dec.

After which a quick dash to Casa Ventura, San Luis to play carols for the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal British Legion, The Band are going from strength to strength under the professional directorship of their Musical Director, Julie Schofield, who for many years successfully conducted and trained various bands in the UK. The bands repertoire varies widely from, Marches, light classics, overtures, ballads, musicals, hymns, carols The band is based in San Miguel de Salinas and rehearse every Tuesday afternoon. PENSIONERS DRAGGED AROUND SUPERMARKET
Fourteen pensioners were dragged around a supermarket in Rojales last Thursday. The incident occurred at the Super Valu shop in Maquesa Golf. They were made to push loaded shoppnig trolleys around by their wives. Fortunately there was no violence , in fact it was all a bit of fun as it was part of The Torrevieja B a r b e r s h o p Harmonisers annual shopping spree for charity. These guys are all pensioners but are never happier to be doing something to help others who are in need of a bit of help. The shopping bill came to 1000€ with all the foodstufs being
delivered to both Caritas Rojales and Reach Out in Torrevieja .Each charity receiving 500€ worth of goods. Shopper were quite suprised when The Harmonisers decided to sing a couple of songs from their repertoire, followed by some Carols with the girls joining in to create a good ‘christmassy’
TORREVIEJA BRANCH START NEW PHASE
At the Annual General meeting of the Torrevieja Branch of The Royal British Legion, held on Friday 21st of November, a new Committee were elected. Outgoing Lady Chairman Gillian had been at the helm for 7 years and was looking forward to a rest. Gill had stepped into the chair when the Branch was at a low and approximately 12 members attended monthly meetings. Now under her leadership the Branch regularly plays host to an average of 60 members at Casa Ventura on the 2nd Friday of the month. Gill thanked the members of the Branch for supporting her and The Royal British Legion during the last few years and keeping the first Legion Branch in Spain open, building and thriving, now in its 26th Year. Davy Young who was standing down as Branch Secretary after three years, handed the reins over to Carol Stockwell. Carol had been the brains behind the highly successful Poppy Concert this year. Davy assumed the role of PR as this post had been vacant. Dianne and Allan Budd, along with Dianne and Derek Forbes continue in role as Social Organisers, providing
entertainment and lunches for the members. Pauline Grindlay and Joyce Bosisto continue their sterling work as Membership Secretary providing data and information to Head Office and keeping membership records up to date. Judi Wilkinson was re-elected as Vice Chair continuing for a second year after assuming the role on the demise of her late partner Bill Weeks last April. Brian Myers, the Branch Standard Bearer who had the honour of parading the Branch Standard at The Royal Albert Hall this year was retained as Branch Standard bearer, while Ken Archer who had paraded the Spanish Flag for the last 6 years stood down, Patricia Atkinson the Union Flag Bearer and a fairly new member of the Branch continues in this important role. Michael Elliott stood down due to an increase in Chaplaincy duties and was replaced by Paul Price. The photograph shows Douglas Sidwell MBE Branch President looks on as Gill presents her Branch Chairmans Jewel to incoming Chairman Gerry Lynch, who leaves the role of Treasurer and hands over to Pam James. In closing Mr Nigel Hail, Chairman of District North Spain as a Guest Speaker, paid respects and thanks to Gill and the Branch for the hard work they had sustained over the last years through thick & thin. He had been honoured to attend both the 25th Anniversary Ball and the Poppy Concert, which he said were both well organised and enjoyable events in this Branch year.

Spain to keep prehistoric Altamira cave open
The Spanish government has assured Unesco that the reintroduction of controlled visits hasn’t damaged the famous rock paintings at the country’s important Altamira cave site. Spain’s Culture Ministry has decided that the experiment in permitting small groups of visitors to see the rock paintings at the Altamira site has been successful with the cave environment not degraded as a result and the prehistoric art in no danger. Spanish newspaper El País has reported that ministry officials met with representatives of Unesco in Paris and presented plans for the future management of the World Heritage site, which included the continuation of

The European Space Agency has opened its first business incubator in Spain with the aim of helping 40 technology start-ups in its first five years. The ESA Business Incubation Centre Barcelona (ESA BIC Barcelona) was officially inaugurated this week, according to the Sinc scientific news agency, the first facility of its kind in Spain and located at the Castelldefels campus of the Catalonia’s Polytechnic University. According to the ESA, “the incubator offers start-up support and technical expertise for the creation of innovative companies” and is supported locally by renowned public administrations and institutions. The centre is managed by Barcelona Activa, the city council’s local development agency and an international benchmark for supporting entrepreneurship, innovation, professional improvement and job creation based on its 27 years of operations with extensive experience in business incubation. Companies involved will be provided with a full programme of advice, measures, services and programmes to support entrepreneurship, including professional development for staff and interaction between hosted companies to foster synergies and joint projects. One key element for start-ups is developing access to markets. The
ESA centre will make it easier for the city’s SMEs “to access tenders to supply goods or services to the public sector”, as well as “working to help companies start up operations abroad”. ESA BIC Barcelona is for companies which have been running for less than five years and whose products, services or applications are based on space technology. With the plan being to assist 40 such start-ups over the next five years, the centre already has four projects in incubation in the fields of drone technology, satellite communications, data compression and renewable energy. As well as access to various European funding channels, each start-up taken on by the incubator will be given €50,000 ($62,000) as an incentive to develop their products. ESA BIC Barcelona joins the ESA network of 10 incubators in Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Portugal and the UK. Between them they have launched 270 start-up companies in Europe, providing a thousand jobs. Álvaro Giménez, the director of the ESA Centre in Spain, says that the new BIC in Barcelona “is clearly an investment in the future”. Twenty-One Arrested Rouble suffers biggest Over Death of Football Fan one-day fall since 1998 as oil slides A total of 21 people have been arrested in the wake up of a brawl between football fans on Sunday morning which left one man dead. More arrests could be forthcoming after the violent clashes which resulted in the death of lifelong Deportivo fan and father-of-two, Francisco Javier Romero Taboada, aka ‘Jimmy’, Spain’s interior ministry said. While authorities described Sunday’s events as exceptional, they described them as “extremely serious”. They promised they would come down hard on clubs that didn’t take action against hooligan fans. Spanish police have been criticized for being unprepared for the violence that broke out before Sunday’s Atlético–Deportivo match, with a government spokesperson saying a fan’s death could have been avoided had the match been classed as high risk. Spanish police have said they had “no indication” of any violence before Sunday´s match, despite claims by the Spanish football league (LFP) that it tried to postpone the match prior to kick-off. In a statement on its website, the LFP condemned the violence, stating that it had hoped to suspend the match but that, “it had not been possible”. The number of riot police deployed around the Vicente Caldarón stadium numbered less than 150, according
to Europa Press, a small number compared to those deployed for typical high risk encounters, such as those between arch rivals Athletico Madrid and Real Madrid or Real Madrid and Barcelona. While the Spanish government has supported the police, saying that the risk was evaluated and, “neither the police nor the clubs themselves” received any kind of prior alert, Cristina Cifuentes, the central government´s delegate for Madrid, speaking on Spain’s Cadena SER radio station on Monday, recognized that Taboada´s death could have been avoided “had the match been classed as high risk”. The fatal brawl took place between the ‘ultra’, or organized hooligan, supporters of Atletico Madrid, Frente Atletico, on the extreme right, and the extreme-left ultra supporters of Deportivo La Coruña, Riazor Blues. Francisco Javier Romero Taboada, was a regular member of the Riazor Blues, according to The Huffington Post, and linked to Los Suaves, one of the group’s most violent sections. On Sunday Spanish sports daily Marca noted that Altético’s ultras have been previously linked to another death. In 1998, a fan of the team Real Sociedad died after he was attacked near the Madrid team’s stadium. “Spanish football must expel these brutes before it is too late,” Marca said on Monday in an editorial on Sunday’s death. http://www. thelocal.es/

Sue Gibson, choreographer and Michelle Edwards co-producer would like to thank the girls of the Suzi4fitz fitness and dance group for rehearsing so hard to put on such a professional and entertaining performance. The rouble suffered its biggest one-day decline since 1998 as oil prices continued to fall on Monday, escalating fears about the Russian economy. The currency slid almost 9% against the dollar before rallying after suspected central bank intervention. Russia is heavily dependent on revenues from oil exports, making its currency vulnerable to falling prices. Brent crude hit $67.53 a barrel, the lowest it has been since October 2009, before regaining some ground. It was just above $70 in late trading on Monday, while US crude was at $66.34 a barrel, having hit an intraday low of $63.72 - the lowest since July 2009. Russia is the world’s second-largest oil exporter, with oil and gas accounting for 70% of its exports and half of government revenues. Oil prices have fallen by more than a third since the summer, while the rouble is down nearly 40% against the dollar since January. The economy has also been hit by western sanctions imposed on Russia in retaliation for its annexation of parts of eastern Ukraine. The currency regained some ground to be at 52 roubles against the dollar and 65 against the euro, still down some 4% for the day at the end of the main trading session in Moscow. Traders said the afternoon rally pointed to intervention by Russia’s central bank, which declined to comment. The central bank has not intervened in the foreign exchange market since 10 November, saying it would do so only if it considered the rouble’s fall a threat to financial
stability. Ksenia Yudayeva, deputy chairman of the central bank, tried to reassure traders by saying there was sufficient liquidity in currency markets and that the bank had prepared new economic forecasts based on a price of $60 a barrel. Laura Lambie, senior investment director at Investec Wealth & Investment, said the Kremlin may privately welcome a weaker rouble because it helped to counter lower oil prices. Globex Bank senior trader Igor Zelentsov said in a note: “Support for the rouble at present can only come from stabilisation of the oil price. Other factors now look secondary and of little significance.” Opec maintains output The latest falls in the oil price follows Opec’s decision last week not to cut output and leave its production target at 30 million barrels a day. Saudi Arabia, the cartel’s biggest producer, said on Monday said it was content with the decision to maintain output despite a supply glut and plunging prices. Amrita Sen, Energy Aspects’ chief oil analyst, said: “The market is still very much in panic mode. Once we get over the panic, Brent prices will probably stabilise at around $65 to $80 a barrel in the short term.” Eugen Weinberg, a Commerzbank analyst, said: “The market is still looking for a new equilibrium below $70 [a barrel], which is a little surprising given that with the current prices much of the shale oil production in the US, or part of it, will be unprofitable.” Read more on: www.bbc.com

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. So far we have been looking at the box and then the bare basics of the windows operating system. Today we have to look at RAM, ROM and Hard disks. When you are looking to buy a new computer and you have asked yourself the usual questions of “What am I going to use it for?” and “How much should I spend?”, you are then hit with a wealth of ‘Tech-Spec’s’ – in other words gobbledegook. One of the first things to will see is the amount of memory or RAM. This is extremely important as it, in part, effects how fast your computer works! If you were to replace a chip of 4GB with something 1 quarter the size, you would expect, and see, a huge reduction in performance. RAM is measured in Kilobytes(KB), Megabytes(MB) (showing my age), but more usually in Gigabytes(GB). A general ‘rule of thumb’ is ‘The more, the better’ BUT ‘too much is a waste’. An example might be; you plan on ‘Skyping’ the grandchildren or checking your email, then 1GB is plenty but if you are making videos of your holiday then 4-8GB is much more normal and necessary. The acronym stands for Random Access Memory or if you’re American ‘Read And Modify’. Both, accurately describe what is going on. RAM is best described as ‘Volatile Memory’, that is memory that when it has no electricity running through it, can not hold onto any data. So when you turn off your computer, the memory is wiped clean. Because of this clever ability, and the fact that it is extremely fast when compared to a hard disk for example, it is used as ‘working’ memory. So what is the difference between RAM and ROM? To start with, the acronym ROM means ‘Read Only Memory’. Once the program or information has been put onto this chip it
can’t be changed. The closest similar familiar object is the music CD or Video DVD. These are WORM devices. WORM simply means ‘Write Once Read Many’ – someone puts the information (music or movie) on the disk and you can enjoy it over and over without the risk of losing it. Same thing with the ROM chip. These usually store permanent information such as the Operating System in days gone by! This leaves the Hard Disk Drive (HDD). The storage capacity is again, measured in GigaBytes (GB) but today’s ones are measured in TeraBytes(TB). A TeraByte is 1000 x 1000 x 1000 x 1000 Bytes, a huge amount of storage space! This is where you store all your information! Operating System, Programs, Pictures, Music and everything else. The strength of this is the opposite to that of RAM – it does store and keep information when the power is turned off! The ‘how and why’ is beyond the scope of this article but, like memory, the general ‘Rule of Thumb’ is ‘The more, the better’! I cut and edit video for fun, but have a tower with 8GB RAM, 2 x 2TB Hard Disk Drives and some days it is still too slow for me! Your standard list of specifications changes every day and as I have written several articles on the subjects of how to choose the best computer for your needs, I will leave the rest up to you. The Devils Spawn A few years ago when I wanted to watch a live football match on telly’ it meant a drive across country to a bar in the hope that the satellite signal or internet connection was working. Or that there wasn’t a Spanish match on at the same time as that meant all bets were off as rightly the Spanish old boys would be giving preferential treatment even though they are well practised in nursing just one tubo or a cup of coffee for the entire match. As a bottle costs only a few cents more than the cheap disgusting rivals; bar owners that don’t stock it may consider paying the difference as drinks taste much nicer. Mind you, maybe a bar using a cheap substitute is a ploy similar to leaving salted peanuts on the bar as they are so stuffed with ‘E’ numbers; drinking them leaves a nasty yet thirsty aftertaste in the mouth. It’s the same with butter, order a sandwich when out and about and the straightforward question of whether butter is used often gets answered in the affirmative even when there is only devils spawn available; otherwise known as margarine. If I hear the words ‘it’s the same thing’ then the establishment’s culinary credentials go straight out the window and I head for the door. Making butter is quite straightforward and has just one nat-
ural ingredient, comes from cows and is called milk. Margarine on the other hand uses so many synthetic ingredients and the process is so industrialised that I refuse to believe it can ever be as healthy as many adverts claim. When rapeseed and cottonseed oils are involved, which both have dubious health concerns plus the heavy metals nickel and palladium used in the manufacturing process; then buying butter which tastes of well, butter has to be better than buying something synthetic called something along the lines of tsnotbutteritsthesamecolourasbutterandtasteslikesick! Funnily enough both butter and margarine both contain 80% fat; it’s just that nobody in their right mind would spread the foul concoction as thick as they would a bit delicious butter on a piece of toast, so the calories come out lower. I used to believe that drinking fruit smoothies was healthy; my favourite
was Innocent’s healthily branded pomegranate, blueberry and acai berry super food which was I thought a healthy choice. With however 13.7 grams of sugar per 100ml, a 250ml bottle has the same sugar content as three and a half Krispy Kreme donuts. A study dubbed it the worst smoothie of all. It’s no wonder my so called beer belly wouldn’t budge cos it was/is a smoothie belly. As a comparison Pepsi Cola has 10.7 grams of sugar per 100ml. Mornings nowadays I drink tomato juice which has less than three grams of sugar per 100ml. Drinking these so called healthy options which are loaded with sugar must increase weight over time and increase the risk of diabetes. Now off the soap box as its time for a pint of clara down the pub where my friendly landlord got rid of the Lidl special and stocks Casera Blanca just for me.

Home-made marzipan
Put the ground almonds into a large bowl. Add the caster sugar, the golden icing sugar and the lemon zest. Use a wooden spoon to stir everything together. Add the almond extract and the egg whites. Mix everything together well to make a firm paste, then use your hands to knead lightly until smooth. Shape the mixture into a round. Wrap in clingfilm and chill for at least 1hr. Don't worry if the paste feels a little sticky - it will firm up and dry out once it's been chilled. To make the glaze put 3tbsp apricot jam into a small pan with 2tsp cold water. Heat gently, then sieve into a bowl. Peel off the greaseproof lining from the cake, then use a sharp knife to level off the top. Turn it over and put on a cake board.
Brush the sieved jam all over the top and sides of the cake. Take two A4 clear-plastic wallets and cut along the shortest edge of each one. Open them out and put the marzipan round onto one of them. Put the other opened-out wallet on top and roll out the marzipan to make a 33cm (13in) round. How to get the paste on in one piece‌Take off the top wallet, flip the paste onto the cake and peel away the other wallet. Press down marzipan over top and sides, so it fits snugly. Trim away excess with a sharp knife. Lift cake onto a serving plate and cover with crumpled greaseproof paper. Leave to dry out for at least one day.

Keep Your Tree Fresh and Green
Cut the stump of the tree with a fresh cut and set it in water immediately. A fresh-cut tree will absorb several quarts of water right from the start. Be sure to place you Christmas tree in a stand that has a large water reservoir and keep it filled.

When decorating your Christmas tree, put lights on first, then garlands, then the ornaments.

Don’t hang all your ornament on the tips of the branches. Place ornaments and other decorations ‘inside’ your tree to add depth and interest.

The latest news release from the European Commission’s statistical office, Eurostat, reveals that Spain has become one of the main engines of construction activity in Europe. As has already been the case in several months of this year, production in Spanish construction (residential and civil engineering) was once again the sector that increased most in September, at European level, registering growth of +9.1% year-onyear. This percentage is less, however, than the +22% increase recorded in August. Following Spain, the EU member states which posted the greatest annual increases were the Czech Republic (+8.2%), Hungary (+7.3%), Slovenia (+6.2%) and Bulgaria (+5.8%). US Black Friday sales fall 11% on Online retailers sluggish demand hope for shopping surge
US retailers reported sluggish Black Friday spending, with sales falling 11% from the same period last year, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). US consumers spent on average $380.95 per person, down 6.4% from a year ago.
Online retailers are hoping that a spending frenzy will continue, with internet shopping reaching a preChristmas peak. Dubbed Cyber Monday, some online stores offer discounts for consumers ramping up their Christmas shopping.
Overall, total holiday weekend sales were estimated to be $50.9bn. The NRF attributed the decline to shifting consumer habits, such as earlier promotions and the growth of online shopping.

Book Review Losing Hope by Nikki Dee
“You always want to make out everything is clean and nice, and everybody is good inside and the world’s a happy place. It’s a crock.” What a tangled web of deceit, distrust and malice as we weave and wend our way aimlessly through life living on the brink of disaster, losing hope. Nikki Dee presents us with a readable but hardly plausible portrayal of extremes: self-righteousness contrasted with nihilism? A child abduction is tragic but can make excellent reading or viewing. Take for instance, the recent tv drama The Missing on BBC1 starring James Nesbitt as Tony Hughes and Frances O’Connor as Emily Hughes. The plot is intricate and sustained, the characters are thoroughly intriguing and realistic with the suspense building up momentum. Brilliant. My kind of excellent drama. With Losing Hope we have a clever pun on hope/Hope. It is 2011 and the drama begins well with the burning of a building in Portsmouth and the discovery of a murdered man and a pregnant and under-nourished young girl. The police believe that the girl has shot the man and set the building alight and are on the point of arresting her and charging her with murder. As they start to unravel, painstakingly, the strands of the many different stories, Chrissie Chambers, a social worker is

pause for thought When discussing proposals for a funeral or wedding blessing, I always feel awkward and embarrassed when the subject of fees arises. There is of course no reason why I should; as I neither fix the fees nor receive anything myself for any service I may take, and most people I speak to expect to pay a fee anyway. But most folk seem to believe the Church to be a wealthy organisation, and seem amazed when I explain that in Spain it’s entirely self funded. There’s no subsidy of any sort, so the Church here depends entirely on the generosity of the comparatively small, regular congregation for everything, including all expenses and employment costs of a Priest, only marginally augmented by fees for special services. In times past the Church was indeed a very wealthy organisation as everyone was expected to give a tenth of all their income or wealth. So Tithe Barns were built to store the huge amount of resultant produce given to the Church. But although this is a long-established Biblical principle, there is little expectation these days that anyone would support the Church to anything like that level. But it’s sad to consider that giving is in many ways a measure of the value we place on our faith. We think little of spending 10 euros on a meal. We’ll happily spend a similar amount on telephone calls, on drinks or on books and magazines. And how much will we gladly spend on Christmas Presents? Yet when asked to give in support of a Church, we often hesitate, calculating what we can afford rather than what my faith means to me. Yet if I really believe in eternity; if I really am truly a Christian, believing that God’s own Son gave everything so I may know eternal life with Him; then there should be no gift too great for me to offer in gratitude. And so, being very human, I regularly have to challenge myself as to just how much I value my faith. Makes four 350ml (12fl oz) jars 350g no-soak prunes; 275g pitted dates; 275g no-soak dried apricots; 450g onions, peeled; 570ml cider vinegar; 50g salt; 1 dessertspoon grated fresh root ginger or 1 heaped teaspoon ground ginger; 75g allspice berries; 450g demerara sugar YOU WILL NEED: A large saucepan and a small piece of muslin or gauze
Butter – a thick slice Thyme – a large sprig or two Rosemary – a large sprig 400g sausage meat fresh breadcrumbs – 3 handfuls 50g cooked peeled chestnuts, roughly chopped

Madeira or dry Marsala – a wine glass
Method Peel and cut up the onions just short of finely chopped (this is a rough-textured stuffing, but you don’t want the pieces so big that the mixture falls apart). Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the onions and let them soften and colour lightly, stirring from time to time. While they are cooking, strip the leaves from the thyme and stir them in. Remove the needles from the rosemary twig and chop them finely. Stir them into the onions. When the onions are soft enough to crush between finger and thumb, add the sausage meat, breadcrumbs, chestnuts and the madeira or marsala. Season generously with salt and black pepper. Shape the stuffing into balls slightly larger than a golf ball and set them in a buttered or foil-lined baking dish (they can remain here for a day or so, refrigerated, until you need them). Bake for about 30 minutes at 180C/160C fan/gas 4, till sizzling.
The dried fruits and onions need to be chopped very small, and this can be done in a food processor. When they’re all dealt with, put the vinegar in a large saucepan with the salt and the ginger, then tie the allspice berries up in the muslin or gauze very securely so they can’t escape and add these to the pan. Christmas Morning Cinnamon Toast
1/2 cup sugar 2 egg yolks 2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese 2 loaves sandwich bread 1 cup margarine 3/4 cup sugar cinnamon
Method
Mix first three ingredients well. Cut crusts off 2 loaves of sandwich bread. Roll each slice as flat as possible with
rolling pin. Spread sugar, egg yolk& cream cheese mixture on bread and roll into crescent. Melt margarine. Mix sugar with enough cinnamon to make it dark. Roll crescents in melted margarine, then in cinnamon-sugar mix. Freeze on cookie sheet for 30 minutes, and then put in plastic bags. When ready to bake, remove crescents from plastic bags and place on cookie sheet. Bake frozen at 400 for about 10-15 minutes.

Britain’s first indoor dog park opens
A gay Irish bull faces slaughter A gay Irish bull facing slaughter has been saved following a worldwide appeal backed by the co-creator of the The Simpsons. Benjy, a Charlerois bull, was being fattened up for an abattoir after he failed to impregnate any heifers this year at a County Mayo farm in western Ireland. Vets had determined he was fertile, but was more attracted to the bull that replaced him. On learning of his fate, activists launched a social media campaign to raise £5,000 to send Benjy to the Hillside Animal Sanctuary in Norfolk, which is home to about 2,000 unwanted farm animals and horses. Sam Simon, co-creator of The Simpsons and philanthropist, has now put up the all the money needed to buy Benjy and transport him to the sanctuary. His transfer is expected to take place in time for Christmas. About 300 other donors also
contributed to the fundraising drive led by the online magazine TheGayUK. Mr Simon, who is battling colon cancer, has been giving away much of the fortune from his television career and is a leading donor to animal welfare causes. He said he heard about Benjy’s case through friends at the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) pressure group. “All animals have a dire destiny in the meat trade, but to kill this bull because he’s gay would’ve been a double tragedy,” Mr Simon said. “It thrills me to help PETA and ARAN (Ireland’s Animal Rights Action Network) make Benjy’s fate a sanctuary rather than a sandwich.” ARAN campaigns director John Carmody said Mr Simon and other donors were buying the bull “a oneway ticket to

More than 600 dog owners have joined the indoor dog walking centre in Cardiff which features toys, jumps, tunnels, sleep areas and a fly-ball play zone. The centre even has artificial grass, park benches, plants and trees to create a natural environment for dogs to run and play. The former steel warehouse has been turned into 20,000sq ft park in the Welsh capital where dog-lovers pay £4.50 a session to enjoy a walk in more comfortable surroundings. Dog walkers in Cardiff are used to getting drenched. Last month Cardiff topped a list of average rainfall dating back to 1981 in records held by the Met Office, coming in with 115 cms a year. In second position was Glasgow with 112 cms a year, and third is Preston with 103 cms. The centre was created by dog owner Shelley Redding who decided to follow an American idea of the indoor walkies with her Action Petz park housed in the converted warehouse. Ms Redding, 37, said: “It has been very popular because it is dry and safe in here for people and their pets. “It does rain a lot unfortunately and it gets dark very early in the evenings at this time of year - so people are really enjoying bringing in their pets.” The former dietician opened her indoor dog park three months ago with hundreds of dog walkers already

Record-breaking private plate to go on Ferrari 250 SWB Leading Ferrari collector and dealer John Collins was the buyer for the latest record breaker and parted with £518,000. The ‘O’ series is particularly popular and has raised millions alone down the years. ‘26 O’ was top seller at the previous auction in September but went for a now measly £36,000
Even more impressive was that John Collins’ huge purchase came just three hours after he’d paid a staggering £130,320 for ‘250 L’. This will sit on a rare 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso. John said: “I was just determined to own them, it was just a case of how much I was going to have to pay for the privilege. I’m not too sure [what my limit was], it could possibly have been the first £1 million personalised registration.”
DVLA smashes British record as 25 O sells for £518,000, will sit on Ferrari previously owned by Eric Clapton The British record for the sale of a personalised plate has been smashed at the DVLA’s 25th anniversary auction. The ‘25 O’ plate went for more £500,000 and is destined for the Ferrari 250 SWB once owned by music legend Eric Clapton. It beat the previous record of £357,000
The record success came in the DVLA’s 150th auction which is also in its 25th anniversary year. Plates were first auctioned in 1989 and since then more than £2 billion has been made. This money is diverted back to the central Government. Jody Davies, DVLA personalised registrations’ events manager added: “What a spectacular way to mark our 150th auction during our 25th Anniversary year. Stranger on the Shore
He, she, or perhaps even it appeared one fine Winter morning. Wrapped in a long black frock-coat to keep the early chills at bay the apparition stalked the byways of Alqueria. People watched through half open shutters as the spectral figure sauntered to and fro. It appeared to be looking for something or worse, at least to the culpable minds of Alquerians, someone. Whether the figure had powers of arrest or censure it was impossible to tell. From its easy movement and upright stance however an age of thirty to forty would have been appropriate. For whom had it come? For whom had the bell tolled? The younger folk examined their consciences and the older their diaries. Manuela’s first thought was that of a jilted lover. She tried to remember the suitors she had wronged but they were so numerous it would have taken a bookkeeper of some renown to recall all the petty details such as names etc. If the figure is female then it is perhaps a wife bent on revenge or it could still be a jilted lover of course. Manuela decided on discretion and took a supply of food, three bottles of Cava and the Village’s senior firefighter into the sanctuary of her roof-space. Norway to grow food crops in space
A team of scientists in Norway are set to research the possibility of growing plants and food crops in outer space, it was revealed on Friday. A new EU-funded research project is set to ‘take-off’ researching how food plants grow in space and how the horticulture could supply space travellers with oxygen and food. The 10-year project called TIME SCALE will be led by Ann-Iren Kittang Jost, research chief at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Space (CIRiS) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology(NTNU) in Trondheim. The research team has not yet decided what plants they will try and grow, but are looking at tomatoes, lettuce and soybeans. The Trondheim research unit has been trying to grow plants in space since 2006. Under the Norwegian research team’s guidance, plant growing experiments were carried out at the International Space Station (ISS). The research focused on the flowering weed, Arabidopsis thaliana.
It is a complex journey of investigation for the scientists who must learn about the interaction of the plants to their new, very different environment. “One of the big challenges is to administer exactly the right amount of water and nutrients to the plants in such little gravity,” said Kittang Jost to Science Nordic. Researchers from the MELISSA space program believe a closed ecosystem can be fully functional in space by 2050. With this goal in mind, the Norwegian researchers’ work is a critical part of giving space explorers the means to survive and eat in a self-sustaining fashion, many thousands of miles away from Earth. The State of the Union Address It is the pomegranates, the last fruit of the year, which got me thinking about the State of the Union. Our arboreal year kicked off with our two almond trees, Little and Large, bursting with blossom. Then at the apex of their delicate display, a freezing gale got up and stripped every flower but one from the unfortunate trees. However, they demonstrated their fortitude, and in due course brought forth a harvest of thirteen nuts – one on Little and twelve on Large. The Nisperoshared the same fate, its fecundity blighted by the icy tempest. Those fruits which did form never made any size, though I suspect that insufficient watering is to blame. The plum tree and the nectarine tree, neighbours next to the deposito, sprang into action together, and although I religiously picked out the small and weakly fruit, they still managed to yield a harvest sufficient to ensure that both we and the neighbours were sick to death of plum and nectarine crumble before the trees were bare. The grape vines started the year in a sulk, probably because we, and not José, pruned them. I think they recognise the hand of the master, because when he prunes them they turn from dead matchsticks into rampant Triffids, whereas when we prune them they produce a few undersized leaves which would be no good at all to Adam, where he to require something to preserve his modesty. The citrus, apart from Stumpy, did their best. We seem to have more than our fair share of pests, but diligent spraying paid off, and they have been promised Favoured Status next year. Stumpy, the mandarin tree, is on his last warning; all he does is mope. He’s been told – snap out of it, or you’re going, and I don’t mean to the party! The Jujubes were magnificent, and no trouble at all, while the pomegranate tree is laden with huge voluptuous globes of delight, perfect in colour, form and texture. So imagine my fury when I cut one open, to find that it was rotten inside! Not just one, but all of them! What dastardly, underhand behaviour! That tree, along with Stumpy and the grape vines, will be powering our fire if they don’tmend their ways!

@ Font Del Llop Golf Resort Wednesday 26th Nov 2014 OH MY GOODNESS it is November and we are still wearing sleeveless shirts. Now that’s the real reason we moved to play our golf on the Costa Blanca. Well only 18 players turned out for our outing at Font Del Llop. The course was in great condition with the greens at times running fast and the 1st cut had been cut back a little more, albeit it still managed to grab (and keep) a few players golf balls. With ideal weather conditions, sun shining and no wind it was destined to produce some good scores... We were not disappointed. After the outing we returned to our new clubhouse The Galleon Bar, Plaza Blanca, Quesada where Tracey served up a scrummy chicken curry, thoroughly enjoyed by
all looking at the amount of players who returned for a second helping. A big thanks to Tracey for donating the Vino for the NTP’s we covered 4 of the par 3’s NTP, Andy Stirfry forgot to bring along the NTP markers (although FDL bailed him out) he also failed to collect the 2’s sweep and with two players recording two’s we have to ask the question is Andy fully focussed on his responsibilities ???? what do you think Dave? DS BARBARIANS RFC TAKE A BIG STEP FORWARD
This week DS Barbarians RFC took a huge step forward by getting off the beach and will be starting training on the pitch at Daya Vieja after been given the all clear to train there. This has seemed to be a long time coming, but after the meeting with Rodriguez from the council everything was sorted out to start on 1 December 2014. Training will be on the same days, Monday and Wednesday, but at 20.45 until 22.15 and is on artificial grass so no studs allowed, but will make a big difference for the training and hopefully will attract more people. We already have local people from the town coming to start on Monday. Also we will be holding a fund raising evening on 13 December, more details of this will follow shortly. Our aim is to get teams into the news

We arrived at BONALBA expecting the rain which had been forecast for the afternoon, but it stayed dry and the round was played in slightly overcast conditions and with a pleasant temperature. The BONALBA Club deserve thanks for providing excellent prizes on the day for which we are very grateful. A mixed bag as far as scores were concerned but the leading scores were impressive. Nearest the pins were won by the usual suspects,President Barry Thorogood,Norman Pickett and the Secretary, Alan Craig[x2]. Third place in the competition went to Jimmy Scott with 33pts,on countback losing to John Thompson in 2nd place. Winner, with a great score of 36 points was Eric Taylor,with whom I played and
seasons league next year for the juniors and seniors. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome and also beginners to experience players the more the merrier as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport, and also bond after training in the nearest bar for a drink and chat, just how rugby should be. Font del Llop – 26.11.14 There were 31 of us travelled the short distance up country to Font del Llop, the venue for our last singles game of the 2014. This course designed by Blake Stirling and Marco Martin is a challenge and delight for all level of players. The design is American with a Scottish layout, maybe the Scottish connection gave Danny MacErlean the inspiration to play well, as he produced an ace on hole 12 over the water. Others came in with good scores as well, negociating the river five ponds and several ravines not to mention the severe semi-rough. No record was kept as to how many balls were lost and no-one was willing to tell, but at the end of the day we had all enjoyed the experience playing our favourite sport in the Spanish sunshine. The results were: Gold Division: 1st Harry Wilcock 37pts, 2nd Brian Coultate 30pts and 3rd Dicky
Silver Division: 1st Meirion Roberts 37pts, 2nd Stan Earl 33pts and 3rd Malcolm Morrison 29pts (c/b) Bronze Division: 1st Danny (hole in one) McErlean 32pts, 2nd Steve Harrington 30pts and 3rd John Featherstone 25pts. There were two 2s Harry Wilcock and Meirion Roberts and Danny McErlean´s ace earned him a double share. The free game draw went to Stan Earl, so a free game at our next venue Las Colinas, nice Christmas present Stan! After the presentation at the Lo Crispin Tavern we all celebrated the hole in one with Danny with Jack Daniels and wine a fitting conclusion to a good day.
Rain fell during the night before 36 golfers descended upon the oldest course in this area, Villamartin and gladly, the sun shone all day. Today was our second Eclectic Competition and many have, without doubt, improved their scores and 3 will receive a handicap cut for their efforts. The NTP’s were donated by the Vice Captain John Eyre and were claimed by Nick Spicer, Colin Marsden, Ken Persson and Ole Rong. There were two lucky lads of rotund stature that took the “Two’s Pot” of 37.50 each, namely Nick Spicer and Vernon Brown. Both enjoyed that it was a roll over from the previous week. The Silver Mob scored fairly well and
there were a few count-backs, but 4th spot went to Ian Parkinson with 34 points, 3rd place and losing on countback was Alex Goslan whose 35 points was the same as Roger Nilsson, but Roger did him on the back 9. The top dog in the Silver Division was Ole Rong with 39 points. The Gold boys didn’t fare much better as it only needed Paul Fairclough to score 35 points to take 4th place. 36 points saw Dave Lethaby take 3rd spot and a pair of 38’s (I can see the pervs thinking right now) saw Alan Rickers losing out to Mick Kennedy on the count-back. The Las Salinas winter petanca league is now in week 4, and up to now the sun has been out,but the teams are not looking forward to playing in the rain. In division 1 amigos belgas 1 have won all there games, closely followed by rocajuna and the buccaneers. In division 2 three teams are at the top but Los Bandidos are in 1st place because they have a better ball difference than the breeze bar cannons and xps. In division 3 it is the same story with amigos belgas 2 being top on
ball difference, followed by torre bears 1 and blagul . In division 4 amigos belgas 3 are top of the league with pumas second and torre bears 3rd. Into division 5 guardamar are in top spot having a better ball difference in 2nd place are dominos mccoys with the falcons in 3rd place. San Miguel Golf Society SMGS’s monthly visit to La Finca, attended by 37 members and 4 guests, found a course quite damp from the overnight rain, but bathed in pleasant warm sunshine and with an absence of wind, making playing conditions pretty good. Gold category players made, in general, the best of these, closely followed by the leaders in the silver category. Some confusion at prize giving was finally sorted out and who won what clarified, a delay which at least had the positive effect of allowing for additional friendly banter and extended drinking time. Results by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Ray Ewins (31), 3rd Mick Roscoe (32 on CB), 2nd Chris Hamblett (32 on CB) and 1st Brian Mulligan with 34 points. On Thursday 27 November 68 members of Eurogolf Society played in the Chuck Matinez Memorial ´Medford´ competition. Chuck was an active member of Eurogolf for many years and served on the committee as Match Secretary, Vice Captain, Captain in 2001 and President 2002. Chuck sadly died suddenly whilst playing golf in England in 2002. He was much respected and sadly missed. As the Medford name implies the first nine holes were played as a medal competition and the back nine as a Stableford, then the Stableford score was taken away from the medal score to arrive at the final result. Lo Marabu Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Altorreal 27th November 2014. For this month’s meeting a group of 20 players visited the established course at Altorreal taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The course is currently under going work and remodelling but was generally in good condition but was blanketed in fog for most of the round and playing long with difficult pin positions which reflected in lower than normal scores. With the weather looking a little threatening, we armed ourselves with brollies and set forth to do battle once again in the Monthly Medal, there were 18 players this week. Some good scores were returned and as the rain didn’t show up a good day was had by all, having said that, there were a few 9s and even a 10 on one card, but we’ll not mention any names. A quick mention must be made for two members who both managed a Hole-inOne on the 4th hole earlier this week, Ray Housley got his on Friday whilst Gordon Abba was successful on Sunday, well done to the both of you. MONTE made the short trip to bigastro and came away with a well deserved point. It all began badly for the away side as after only 3mins YONHI was caught in possession and Bigastros no9 slotted home with ease 1-0 much yo the fury of Monte manager JUANPE who vented his digust angrily at his defender. On 15 mins Dimitry went close with a header and Monte started to gain momentum with good passing football but Bigastro are a big physical side and a great move seen them hit the post with Lopez well beaten. The visitors stuck to their task and Carlos went close as did Macan but the half finished 1-0. The vocal travelling support of 50+ were certainly entertained in the second half as both sides produced a spectacle of football that will be well talked about for weeks. Monte striker VAZ replaced YONHI and 2mins in was on the recieving end of a disgusting challenge that only seen yellow.Bigastro knew of this danger of Vaz and Monte presssured and when OROUKER misssed a golden chance it
seemed Monte were going home with nothing.ALBERTO came off for RUBEN and still chances at both ends with EL GATO LOPEZ producing 2 consecutive quality saves Monte seemed obsessive on equalising and they duly did on 75 mins a great cross seen VAZ out leap his marker to head in the leveller to send the away support crazy. With even numbers for our fun day match, Ruby’s golf society played a Texas scramble in the sunshine at El Plantio, the course was in excellent condition and played well. There were three teams with exactly the same score but PA Theresa’s team were way ahead of the rest 10 points clear and scooped the winning prize with her team of Glyn Pierce, John Andrews and David Trotman. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s were won by Roy Stanley, Bill Malcom and Glyn Pierce, nearest the pin in two was won by Buck Taylor. Longest drive for the men was Roy Stanley and for the ladies Theresa Wright. A great day finished off with a great buffet at the Med where the presentation of the prizes took place, and where (yawn) Buck Taylor once again won the football card. Furniture First Rojales Tuesday Night Trios Ten Pin Bowling League Week Nine played 25th November 2014 ‘We need to win to get away from the bottom’ was the call from Los Lobos’ Irene Lakin and, after two games things were going well. Then, Juans’ Warriors woke up and managed to take the third game by 20 pins. So it was a 6 – 2 victory for LL and, it moves them off the foot of the table. As it was 1st versus 3rd, you would have thought it was going to be a cracking match but, Med Bistro & Bar El Raso and Split Happens produced a very lacklust game and, it only got exciting in the final frame of the 3rd game. With SHs’ Marion Haynes rolling a great 208 scratch game, it came down to last man Gary Walsh to score at least eight with his last ball and, he duly did just enough and salvaged 2 points, leaving MBB 6 – 2 winners and they extend their lead at the top. Eija Suomi of Caballo Negro tried her hardest, with a 202 scr game and 617 h/c series but, Team Finland were far to strong on the night, running out an 8 – 0 points win. With Olli Leppanens’ 562 and Markku Maattas’ 581, TF took the team scr honours on
the night. Mixers were ‘on a roll’ but, a certain Paul Kundiss of Luck Strike had other ideas. Bowling his highest ever scr scores of 223 and 606, Paul led LS to a great 8 – 0 win and, team high handicap scores for week nine. Second placed Splash arrived with only two bowlers but, with Diego Munoz bowling a 1st game of 203 scr, SP sneaked a draw against Crazy Pinz. With their third bowler Juanjo Carral joining in, SP took the 2nd game but, by only 9 pins. So, with CP bowling consistantly in game 3 and SP struggling, CP took the 3rd game and, the overall pinfall, for a 5 – 3 points win. Right Move Insurance took on The Dreamers, looking to consolidate their mid table position and, after 3 steady games, took all 8 points, to move themselves into the top half of the league and, plung TD to rock bottom. All three Belgas Torrevieja 2 bowlers scored well as they held on to inflict another defeat on Los Bandidos 6 – 2. Next week is the start of the Turkey Shoot, sponsored by Med Bistro & Bar El Raso, where strikes win you tickets for the draw on the 16 th. Madrid’s modest football team Rayo Vallecano has comes good on its promise to take care of an 85-yearold woman who was evicted from her home with an exciting new charity initiative. Rayo Vallecano, the Spanish capital’s poor cousin compared to the illustrious Real and Atlético Madrid football clubs, has made good on its promise to rescue an 85-year-old woman whose plight became national news earlier in November when she was evicted from her home in the poor Vallecas district of Madrid. Amid an outcry over the woman’s eviction, Rayo, which is based in the Vallecas district and prides itself on its strong community roots, promised to ensure that Carmen Martínez was provided with a roof over her head for as long as she needed it. The 85-yearold was thrown out of the apartment she had lived in for 50 years on November 21st as she had guaranteed a defaulted loan granted to her son. The eviction took place amid a strong police presence and despite the efforts of members of the PAH anti-eviction platform, whose Vallecas branch has led the campaign to help Martínez and “all the other Carmens out there” in reference to the thousands of people evicted from their family homes since the Spanish property bubble burst around 2008. “We are not going to do nothing, we are going to help this woman,” said Rayo manager Paco Jémez before last weekend’s 1-0 home victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday. “Not just me, but the whole technical team, the players and the club. We will do everything we can to help this woman and lend her a hand so that she can live with dignity and not feel alone.” Now the club has revealed its plan to raise money for Carmen and other potential victims of economic hardship in a neighbourhood which has always been one of the capital’s poorest. Accompanied by Rayo president Raúl Martín Presa and team captain Roberto Trashorras, Jémez announced
on Thursday the concept of a ‘row zero’, consisting of a bank account for donations — which the club’s players have already got rolling — and a donation of five euros from all tickets to the next home match against Sevilla. The money will be used to pay rent on a suitable home for Carmen, at least until the authorities provide an alternative. Any funds left over will also be used for good causes. “We have taken a step forward and we would like to take many more, but we are a modest club with limited financial resources,” said Presa. Rayo was taken into receivership three years ago and has one of the lowest budgets in La Liga’s first division. Jémez, famed among fans as a blunt and plain-speaking football man, said it was a normal reaction from players and staff who care about the district their fans live in. “The starting point was to help someone who was being kicked out into the street. If she were to be offered a decent flat or a proper solution, what we will do is find someone else who needs help; there are plenty out there,” he said. “This money is not just going to sit there, but rather be distributed among people in need,” the manager concluded. Rayo fans held up numerous banners during the win over Celta promoting the club’s stance against those caught up in Spain’s crippling financial crisis. “It seems to me like a beautiful gesture, they are great people and I thank them a lot,” Martinez told Spanish newspaper El Mundo. After the club made their intention to help public, Madrid mayor Ana Botella announced that she would try to find a solution for Martinez, who is currently staying with her grandson. Mazarron dropped out of the playoff positions with a 2-0 defeat away to Espinardo Atletico despite having 75% of possession in a game played on an artificial surface which barely confirmed to the minimum width regulations. Without Antonio Jose and Mateo at the back, Mazarron had to play juvenile midfielder Andreo as a central defender alongside Dani with four other juveniles also on the substitutes bench. Mazarron were cheered on by a good number of supporters in appalling weather conditions, the constant driving rain making life difficult for players and spectators alike. Liders shot wide after just two minutes and Mazarron then forced two corners both of which came to nothing. At the other end an Espinardo free kick was easily saved by Conejo and a mistake by Lorca let in one of the home strikers who shot against the cross bar. Espinardo took the lead after 20 minutes when Dani misjudged the pace of a through ball allowing Alejandro to run on, round Conejo and place the ball into an empty net. Thereafter, it was all Mazarron with Tolo almost scoring on two occasions, once when he superbly rounded the last defender before seeing his shot smothered by the Espinardo keeper. Monty’s free kick after 28 minutes was just too high and then, a minute later a superb free kick from Alfonso crashed against the bar before rebounding to Monty who volleyed over. FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi became the all time leading goalscorer in the Champions League just four days after achieving the same feat in La Liga with his 72nd goal in the competition against APOEL Nicosia last Tuesday. Messi was captaining Barça on the night and stabbed home his side’s second goal of the evening from close range on 37 minutes after Luis Suarez had opened his account for the club with the opener. The Argentine moves ahead of Raul, who scored 71 goals in 142 appearances for Real Madrid and Schalke, with Cristiano Ronaldo just one goal further back on 70. Messi now hold both scoring records at just 27 years of age and reached the new record mark in 51 fewer games than Raul with both men having won
the tournament three times. The four-time World Player of the Year broke Telmo Zarra’s 59-yearold record of 251 La Liga goals at the weekend with a hat-trick in a 5-1 thrashing of Sevilla to take his tally in the Spanish top flight to 253 goals in 289 appearances.
