Hologram Hugh woos in first ever virtual junket

Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman discussed his latest film in Madrid over the weekend in the world's first ever holographic press conference, which could revolutionize the film industry in austerity hit countries. After seven years of crippling economic crisis, you would not blame Spain for trying to save a few euros here and there, which is what it did recently by inviting Hollywood heart throb Hugh

Jackman to Madrid over the weekend – in virtual form. There was no first class plane ticket, no five-star hotel and no extravagant rider. Instead, the Australian actor was beamed live to Spain’s capital from Berlin as a hologram, to discuss his new film Chappie, with the film’s director Neill Blomkamp. Sony pictures Spain revealed it was the first time ever a ‘holographic press conference’ had taken place, something which could surely revolutionize film publicity in these belttightening films for the Spanish film industry. The stunt was a “stomping success”, according to US entertainment magazine, Variety, who described how the Aussie actor and South African director “came over loud and clear”. “Chappie is a film of action, of relations, but also highly technological. So we wanted to do something which was innovative and nonconventional, the first holographic press conference in the history of cinema,” said Ivan Losada, director general of Sony Pictures Releasing de España. Chappie tells the story of an experimental robot who is taught to learn and feel by its inventor (Dev Patel). Jackman plays Vincent, “a corrupt policeman, piloting his own destructive monster-droid and hell

have to travel the world on months-long press junkets? Jackman hopes not: “I’m a little worried that studios will say ‘This is so much easier than having Hollywood divas travelling around’. As a kid I used to have a map of the world next to my bed. Not rock stars. As cool as holograms are, I really don’t want to stop travelling.” But the new technology could come as a blessing for the Spanish film industry, which has suffered crippling losses since the beginning of the crisis, meaning many Hollywood stars now skip the country when publicizing their films abroad. The economic crisis has had a crippling effect on Spain’s film industry in 2013 box-office takings were recorded at their lowest ever, setting a grim record for Spain. “We are in a state of panic,” Pedro Pérez, the president of the Spanish film producers association (FAPAE) told newspaper, El País, at the time. Spanish cinema goers have also been turned off by rising ticket prices, which have nearly doubled in price in the last decade in part because of the rise in VAT from 8 percent to 21 percent. But with the introduction of holograms, maybe Hollywood’s finest will grace Spanish press conferences once more, just this time from the comfort of their own homes.

COMMENDATION FOR LOCAL FUNDRAISER

At a special ceremony The Board of Trustees of The Royal British Legion recently honoured one of their most prolific local fundraisers, Michael Reeves, for his efforts in raising over 15,000 euro toward the RBL Poppy Appeal. The award was made at the monthly meeting of the Orihuela Costa Branch of The RBL by the Chairman of Spain District North, Nigel Hails, on behalf of Ray Sheppard, Head of the Poppy Appeal. Mr Sheppard said in his commendation “Your endeavours have been the means of bringing essential aid and comfort to those in need. I am quite sure that, could those assisted know directly of your outstanding contributions to this work they would wish to be associated with this expression of our deepest gratitude for all you have done”. In his response to the presentation Mike said that he was absolutely overwhelmed but nevertheless delighted to accept on

behalf of all the local golf societies that have contributed so generously to his efforts. Under his rather better known handle of ‘Mick the Grip’ the ‘Poppy Golf Days’ have been a regular feature of the Costa Blanca Golf scene for the last 5 years raising many thousands of euros for those less fortunate souls and taking up many dozens of hours of his time. He promised also that they would carry on for many more years to come but did appeal on closing for some assistance with his continuing efforts.

South Korean Camino de Santiago pilgrims rescued after getting lost in snow

who finally called the central emergency centre in the early hours of this morning to say the walkers had been found and taken to the inn they were heading for in Roncesvalles, and that they were all in a good state of health.

THREE South Koreans who became lost in the snow last night (Sunday) on the Santiago pilgrimage walk have been found safe and well at their intended destination. The 112 emergency hotline in the landlocked northern region of Navarra received a call from them at 17.00hrs to say they had set off from Saint Jean de Pied du Port in southern France and were heading for the pilgrims' lodge in Roncesvalles, Navarra, but had got lost in the mountains. They did not speak Spanish and had very little English, and were unable to give details of their possible location as they did not know the area. As a result, a search party had to be sent out working on the very limited information they had to hand. When rescue workers tried to call them again on several occasions, their mobile phone had no signal. Firefighters from Burguete, the Foral (regional) police's environmental unit, the Guardia Civil and the volunteer fire brigade from Valcarlos combed the official pilgrims' trail and a wide area around it until gone 00.30hrs this morning, to no avail. The Puerto de Ibañeta area was covered in deep snow, making the hunt even more difficult. It was the Guardia Civil's Mountain Rescue Group

The Camino de Santiago - a Mediaeval pilgrims' route which the faithful followed every year on foot to rend homage to Saint James, or San Diego, at the cathedral built in his honour in the capital city of the province of A Coruña, is now a popular cross-border tourist trail. Starting points are found in France and all over Spain, and to gain a certificate showing that the pilgrims have 'completed' the Camino, an official route of at least 100 kilometres has to be taken. Most undertake it on foot, but some go by bike or on horseback, and inns along the way offering food and rooms at reduced prices and where travellers can get their 'Camino card' stamped to prove they have completed that section of the route are dotted along the way. Some continue on past the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela, in the north-western region of Galicia, to the lighthouse town of Finisterre, mainland Spain's westernmost point. Once a religious undertaking - the Catholic answer to the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca - the Camino de Santiago is now a popular form of outdoor tourism which attracts visitors year-round from every continent, often as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

Cortijo Grande’s new ‘Jewell in the Crown’

By Tony Matthews Six years ago, La Finca Listonero was severely damaged by a raging fire that swept through the picturesque valley of Cortijo Grande. But now it’s one of the finest restaurants/hotels in the area, as far as I am concerned! Over the last four years, British owners Ian and Sandra McIlroy have completely transformed the property which now has nine double rooms available. The restaurant can seat 42 diners; there’s an outside patio and a swimming pool. Head chef Malcolm prepares some superb dishes, using local produce; his menu changes regularly and vegetarians are catered for. Until Easter, the La Finca Listonero restaurant is only open on Thursday and Friday evenings and on Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes. But hopefully when the summer arrives, these times will change. Please venture over and view this fabulous rural retreat sooner rather than later… you won’t be disappointed. Tel. (0034) 950 982 045 Email: fincalistonero@gmail.com

Zaragoza on orange alert after Ebro River bursts its banks The city of Zaragoza has issued an orange alert – the second highest on the Spanish scale – due to flooding from the Ebro River. At 4am on Monday, rising waters reached the capital of Aragón with a volume of 2,542 m3 per second and crested at over six meters, after which the water level began to descend, said the regional water authority Confederación Hidrográfica del Ebro (CHE). The city’s entire firefighting squad and 130 local police officers were sent out to deal with the flooding, and people had to be rescued from their homes in three rural neighborhoods. Between Sunday night and Monday morning, rescue workers went out on 75 missions. The chairman of CHE, Xavier de Pedro, appeared on the radio on Monday to defend his agency from widespread criticism for failing to foresee the flooding along the banks of the Ebro. Spain’s Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, is

scheduled to fly over the flooded parts of Aragón. De Pedro noted that for years the CHE has been asking for the river to either be drained in places where it runs through riverside villages, or else to enlarge it to make room for higher water volumes. Both options have been ignored because of environmental legislation prohibiting it. The most at-risk municipality is Pina del Ebro, a village of 1,600 residents located 30 kilometers from Zaragoza, which could be evacuated by 1pm on Monday if necessary, authorities said. The residents of Pradilla del Ebro (population 584), who were forced out of their homes on Saturday, are being allowed back, while inhabitants of Boquiñeni (population 896) were waiting for the army to complete the installation of a provisional bridge. Over in the neighboring region of Navarre, the citizens of Tudela (population 35,072) and Buñuel (2,279) were still waiting for the water level to go down before starting cleanup work, said the regional government. Spain’s Interior Minister, Jorge Fernández Díaz, is scheduled to fly over the flooded parts of Aragón and meet with regional premier Luisa Fernanda Rudi. The central government is planning to pass a decree on Friday to release money to help deal with the consequences of the natural disaster. elpais.com

a-z business directory Both individuals and businesses can support local businesses, all you have to do is: ...whenever you can, buy from a local business as opposed to buying outside of your region. These days, when most people do the majority of their shopping in giant supermarkets, out of town shopping complexes or city centre malls, it can be difficult to draw attention to a small business trading locally. But with concerns being raised over community cohesion, social inclusion and the environment, the local business has never been more important. It’s down to enterprising business owners like you to promote the importance of supporting local businesses so that the public understand why it matters and how it can benefit whole communities. In order to tackle the trend toward supermarket shopping, it’s important to understand why people choose it. Research indicates that the reasons they most frequently cite are the variety of products available and the convenience of having them all in one place.

Do you support local businesses? Challenge this directly through poster campaigns and advertisements which emphasise the variety offered by small independent businesses, contrasted with the way that monopolies tend toward homogenisation. Remind people how convenient it is to have a lot of small shops offering different products and services located in the area, and how convenient it is to be able to shop close to home. It’s okay to admit that big business has the edge in some areas if you stress that there’s a cost to this. For instance, you could have a poster featuring a pint of milk which acknowledges that it’s cheaper in the supermarket but points out how much less time is spent if it can be picked up nearby, so that it still pays to shop locally. If your business purchases its products locally, it’s worth emphasising this - shopping with you means supporting local producers and cutting down on the environmental costs of long distance transport. If you sell food, it also means getting fresher produce. You can also point out that local businesses mean local jobs and increased opportunities for local people, encouraging the young to stay in the area and become positively involved with the community. It cuts out the daily commute for many people and makes their working lives more pleasant

Spain's Eurovision song, 'Daybreak' released

Spain's national public broadcaster has released the much anticipated song, Amanecer (Daybreak), which will be sung by Edurne in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. Edurne, who rose to fame in 2005 after appearing on a TV talent show, will compete for Spain in the Eurovision Song Contest on May 23rd in Vienna, singing Amanecer (Daybreak), an epic ballad of lost love. This year’s contest will be held

singing in their mother tongue and this year is no exception; Amanecer is sung entirely in Spanish. “Daybreak is a cry of pain but also about overcoming that pain,” Edurne told Spanish national public broadcaster, TVE. The song was written by Tony SánchezOhlsson, no stranger to Eurovision; the Spanish producer has written a number of previous entries such as Pastora Soler’s 2012 entry ‘Quédate conmigo’ (Stay with me). Edurne was announced as this year’s Eurovision entry on January 14th. The announcement had to be brought forward after the news was leaked online, by the singer herself.

Top tips for fighting the common cold The harsh winter weather has launched the cold and flu season, and from colleagues sniffing and sneezing to family members in bed with flu symptoms, it's difficult not to fall prey to the common cold. The good news is there are lots of natural remedies to help relieve the symptoms and keep you in tip top shape! Nutritionist Emma WightBoycott reveals some of the easiest ways to fight against the common cold… Get enough sleep Sleep is one of the key elements to maintaining a healthy immune system. Most of us need around seven hours per night, but some of us need even more than that. During sleep, our bodies repair and recover from illness so the more you can get, the better you will feel. Eat less sugar Sugar can play havoc with our bodies, with consequences on our immune systems. If you want to try to help reduce your number of sick days, reduce your sugar intake. Get enough vitamins Vitamin C is important for the immune system – especially for people who are exercising outside in the colder month! Bill Gates is named world's richest person again

Bill Gates has been declared the richest man in the world for the second year running by Forbes magazine’s annual ranking of global billionaires. The Microsoft founder once again beat Mexican businessman Carlos Slim to the top spot. Mr Gates’ net worth rose by just over $3bn (£1.94bn) in the year to 13 February, to $79bn. There are a record 1,826 billionaires in the world, Forbes said, an increase of 181 in the past 12 months. Mr Gates has now been top of the list for 16 of the last 21 years, Forbes added. Legendary US investor Warren Buffet regained third place in the list with a net worth of $72.7bn, from Amancio Ortega, the founder of Spanish fashion chain Zara. The top 10 richest people worldwide: 1. Bill Gates $79.2bn, 2. Carlos Slim Helu $77.1bn, 3. Warren Buffett $72.7bn, 4. Amancio Ortega $64.5bn, 5. Larry Ellison $54.3bn, 6. Charles Koch $42.9bn, 7. David Koch $42.9bn, 8. Christy Walton $41.7bn, 9. Jim Walton $40.6bn, 10. Liliane Bettencourt $40.1bn. The funds required to make it into the top 20 in the list have fallen by $2bn to $29bn

this year. The founders and chief executives of US technology firms dominated the list again, accounting for six of the top 20 richest men in the world. The first woman on the rich list is Christy Walton, the widow of John Walton, one of the heirs to the Wal-Mart retail empire. She has been declared the richest woman in the world for five of the last six years by Forbes. Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg moves up five places in the rankings to number 16, with a net worth of $33.4bn. This is the first time he has been included in the list if the world’s 20 richest people. The youngest billionaire in the world is 24 yearold Evan Spiegel, the co-founder of messaging app Snapchat, with a fortune of $1.5bn. Silicon Valley has produced 23 new billionaires this year including cofounders of c a r- h a i l i n g service Uber, Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp, and

their first employee, Ryan Graves. Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of bloodtesting firm Theranos, has debuted on the global list as the youngest self-made woman at age 31, with a fortune of $4.5bn. The US also dominates the top 20 with 15 of the world’s richest people coming from America. This list includes 290 newcomers, 71 of whom come from China. There is also a new record of 46 billionaires under under the age of 40. One hundred and thirty-eight people from last year’s list dropped out of the ranks altogether. Most notable of these is current Ukrainian President and former “chocolate king” Petro Poroshenko. Meanwhile, Guatemala has a billionaire for the first time in Mario Lopez Estrada, who owns Comcel, which has about half of the mobile phone market in the country. He ranks as 1741 on the list. bbc.co.uk

SOLTIMES MARCH 2015

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last time we started to discuss music or to be more accurate the difference between digital and analogue music. Today I am going to complete the article with a look at the pro’s and con’s of the different music formats. What are the music formats that are available? This list is not exhaustive but covers most of the most popular formats. MP3 was designed by the Moving Picture Expert Group (MPEG) and was originally in the MPEG 1 format, the latest and best incarnation is the MPEG 2.5 compression format, and are ‘Lossy’ formats that reduces the file to about 10% of its original size. See last weeks article on the difference between ‘Lossy’ and ‘Lossless’ formats, It is currently the most popular but is being closely followed by the AAC format. AAC or Advanced Audio Coding uses the MPEG 4 technology to produce a better quality sound using the same number of bits. This format is usually hidden behind the following file extensions:.m4a,.m4b,.m4p,.m4v,.m4r,.3gp,. mp4,.aac. These will be found on Apple, Xbox (Mircosoft) and Youtube. Musepack or MPC (formerly known as MPEGplus, MPEG+ or MP+) is an open source lossy audio codec, specifically optimized for transparent compression of stereo audio at bitrates of 160–180 kbit/s. OGG and ‘OGG Vorbis’ are names for a free and open-source replacement for patented and restricted formats like MP3. The Vorbis format has proven popular among supporters of free software. They argue that its higher fidelity and completely and patents free, make it a superb replacement for the MP3 format. FLAC (Fully Lossless Audio Codec) is an open source format with royalty-free licensing and is free software. FLAC has support for metadata tagging (artist, album, album cover art, etc) and fast seeking. Being Lossless you get the highest quality digital sound and Digital audio compressed by FLAC’s algorithm can typically be reduced to 50–60% of its original size! When decompressed and played back it is an

identical copy of the original audio data! Far superior to any Lossy format! The Grandad of many of the audio formats is the WAV format. It is the standard audio file container format used mainly in Windows PCs. Commonly used for storing uncompressed (PCM), CD-quality sound files, which means that they can be large in size—around 10MB per minute. Wave files can also contain data encoded with a variety of (lossy) codecs to reduce the file size (for example the GSM or MP3 formats). Finally the next generation from WAV is the WMA (Windows Media Audio) format. Windows Media Audio (WMA) is an audio data compression technology developed by Microsoft. It is a proprietary technology that forms part of the Windows Media framework. WMA consists of four distinct codecs. The original WMA codec, known simply as WMA, was conceived as a competitor to the popular MP3 and RealAudio codecs. WMA Pro, a newer and more advanced codec, supports multichannel and high resolution audio. A lossless codec, WMA Lossless, compresses audio data without loss of audio fidelity (the regular WMA format is lossy). WMA Voice, targeted at voice content, applies compression using a range of low bit rates. It sounds like the perfect and complete solution to all of our audio needs BUT it supports digital rights management (DRM) using a combination of elliptic curve cryptography key exchange, DES block cipher, a custom block cipher, RC4 stream cipher and the SHA-1 hashing function. That is a lot of encryption to ensure that you can’t copy it from one computer to another and can’t make a permanent CD copy for your home! That is an argument for another day :-) Contact me for free advice concerning your computer or tablet at the address or phone number below.

Memories on wheels

30 years ago I started a game keeping apprenticeship. The only problem was that it meant a daily18.5 mile each way cycle ride. So I bought an ancient Honda C90 scooter and what an evil contraption it was. It belched out black smoke and I never got my teenage head around the semiautomatic clutch, too many times I ended up crashing into things as the darn thing just would not stop. Once I bashed into a car and was mortified, the guy just shrugged and reassured me that our insurance would sort it out. The very nice man never even bothered claiming for it. Luckily before the C90 could do me or the environment any more damage it blew up on the A25 in Albury near Guildford and I remember pushing it the three miles up and over the North Downs to home where it was laid to rest. At this point my dear Gran stepped in buying me a proper motorbike and helmet to match; a Honda CB100 costing her the then

REGISTERING YOUR VEHICLE IN SPAIN. SPANISH LICENSE PLATES AND REGISTRATION DOCUMENT Registering a non-Spanish vehicle in Spain is a complex and potentially costly procedure. However, you maybe exempt from Spanish registration tax by getting Spanish number plates within one month of entering the country. But to do this, you need to become a resident. Linea Directa has been insuring expat drivers in Spain for over a decade and understands all the steps involved. Below we outline this process. STEP 1: OBTAINING A CERTIFICATE OF CONFORMITY This is a statement by the car’s manufacturer that it conforms to EU regulations. You will need the car’s chassis number to complete this straightforward process online at www.eurococ. eu/en/certificate_of_conformity. The charges for this service will vary according to type of vehicle, make and country of 1st registration. STEP 2: CURRENT LOG BOOK The vehicle’s original log book showing your name as the owner, the vehicles age and a valid UK address. You will also need the bill of sale for the car. STEP 3: RESIDENCY IN SPAIN The Spanish residency certificate (Certificado de Empadronamiento) is your official proof of residency in Spain. Your local town hall can provide you with this document. You will need to take your passport and proof of Spanish address (rental contract, contract to purchase or

property deeds). STEP 4: OBTAINING A SPANISH MOT CERTIFICATE All vehicles over 4 years old must be roadworthy and clearly display a valid ITV sticker. The ITV (Vehicle Technical Inspection) must be tested at an authorised centre, just as for an MOT test. You can find out the location of your nearest ITV centre on DGT website (equivalent to the DVLA). You can also call your local centre to make a booking. If the centre is busy, especially pre-summer, this can save a lot of time. The cost can vary but generally is around 40€ for petrol-engine cars and 56€ for diesel-engine cars. Step 5: OBTAINING A SPANISH EQUIVALENTOF A TAX DISC The Spanish Tax Agency can provide your vehicle with a valid “tax disc” for Spain, which must be carried in the car when in use. You will need to complete the relevant form online and pay the amount according to your car’s tax band. You can carry out all these procedures yourself or you can seek the assistance of an accountant to do this for you. We hope the information provided in this article is of interest. If you would like to contact Linea Directa please call 902 123 161. More information on Linea Directa online at www.lineadirecta.com

SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT THE ONLY PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT ON THE COSTAS!!!! LOOKING TO BUY OR RENT? FIND YOUR DREAM HOME INSIDE!

buying a property

Once you have signed the Purchase Contract and paid a deposit for your new property, timescales are normally worked into the Contract for percentage payments to be made depending upon the stage reached in building the premises, e.g. once the foundations are in, when the roof is on, when the interior works have been completed, etc. It is sometimes acceptable to hold back a small percentage of the final payment until any outstanding minor works are carried out. To this end, it is a good idea to prepare a “snagging list” with the constructor so you are both in agreement on any such works. By the same token, make sure you get a detailed and itemised list of expenditure before the works commence so everyone is happy who is paying for what and when. The constructor will be applying for the relevant Certificates and Licences prior to commencing building work and as the property is constructed, and again the cost of these will be detailed and included in your Contract. It has recently become law that all constructors must take out an insurance against serious defects or their company going bankrupt before the building has been completed (much like a NHBC Certificate in the UK). Because these insurances are so new, they often take months to arrange, which could delay completion of the property, so it is worth checking that your constructor has this aspect in hand so it is not left until the last minute. Constructors usually pass the cost of this insurance on to the purchaser, and it is quite a significant amount, so also ensure this has been accounted for in your expenditure list, or is included in the contract price. In order to sign the Escritura de Obra Nueva & Compraventa (Deed for a New Property) at the Notary’s Office, the following documents are required; the Building Licence, a “Fin de Obra” (End of Works) Certificate, the Architect’s description of the new property, and the 10 year Insurance Certificate. As there can be delays in obtaining all these documents, owners sometimes arrange with the builder that they move into the property prior to signing the Escritura. It is possible to sign an Escritura of Compraventa (Deed of Sale/Purchase) at the same time as the Obra Nueva, and these documents are often merged into one. However, do bear in mind that notary and property registry fees will still be applicable for each transaction, albeit in one invoice. Some builders pay the cost of the Obra Nueva Escritura themselves, so this is another point to check with your constructor. You can sign an Escritura for just the land your property

is going to be built on, and a subsequent Escritura for the Obra Nueva once the property is built, but the usual method is to wait and sign when your house is complete, to avoid the higher rates of VAT charged when purchasing a plot of land alone. For example, if you buy a plot of land and sign an Escritura on just this plot, you will pay 16% IVA. If you subsequently build a property on the land and sign a separate Escritura for the Obra Nueva, there will be a further 7% VAT to pay on the property construction. However, if you wait and sign everything once the house is complete, you will only pay 7% on the total price. Furthermore, if you have a garage or swimming pool built after the property has been constructed and registered, the IVA will be separate and set at 16%. In addition, and separate from the IVA tax, once you have signed the Escritura, you will have to pay a Government Registration Tax which is 1% of the declared value of the new dwelling for non residents, and 0.1% for residents. Once the premises have been built, and the Escritura signed, the constructor will arrange for his electrician and plumber to prepare a Boletin (report) in order that the electric and water contracts may be drawn up. The Boletin accompanies the Cedula de Habitabilidad (Habitacion Certificate) application that must be lodged at the Town Hall. The Town Hall will inspect the new property to satisfy themselves that (a) it has been built in accordance with the plans submitted by the builder and (b) the property is of a requisite standard for

habitation. They will then issue the Cedula. It is at that point that the electric and water contracts can be drawn up in the new owner’s name. Once again, these new meters and connections must be paid for, so make sure they are shown in the expenditure list you receive from the builder. This is another area that can take months to arrange, and until that time you will be on a temporary building supply, so check with the builder as to how bills will be paid (i.e. are these included in his services, or will he be passing the costs on to you). It is recommend you see the assistance of a gestor or qualified individual if you are buying a new property, as apart from the complexity of this particular type of transaction, it is good to have an impartial third party who can liaise between yourself and the constructor if necessary. If you are considering buying a plot of land with a view to building at a later date, or land that has an existing old property on it (usually known as a “finca”) it is vital that you seek advice, as checks must be made that the land is urbanizable (i.e. can be built on) - there are no minimum size requirements by the Town Hall to inhibit building, and general services such as water, electric and sewage can be provided, but note that they may be expensive to obtain if they are not nearby. read more: http://www.thinkspain.com/

Eurozone Inflation Fell to -0.6% in January

SOLTIMES march 2015

Home Sweet Home Property Services

The rate of inflation in the eurozone fell to -0.6% in January, from -0.2% in December, which is its lowest level since July 2009, and represents the greatest drop in prices in the region of the comparable historical series, Eurostat confirmed last week. The fall in prices in the eurozone, which included Lithuania in January, is largely due to the drop in the price of energy, which fell by -9.3% year-on-year in January, compared with a decline of -6.3% registered in December, and is far greater than the decline of -1.2% registered in January 2014. A total of 17 of the 19 eurozone countries

recorded year-on-year price declines in the first month of the year. Malta and Austria were the only two members of the eurozone to register price increases, of +0.8% and +0.5%, respectively, while the most significant declines were recorded in Greece (-2.8%), Spain (-1.5%) and Lithuania (-1.4%). In the whole of the European Union (EU), a total of 23 member countries registered falling prices in January, while the only countries to record increases in inflation were the United Kingdom (+0.3%), Sweden (+0.4%), Romania and Austria (both +0.5%) and Malta (+0.8%).

Ireland's manufacturing sector buoys eurozone output

Accelerated growth in both new orders and production pushed Ireland's PMI to 57.5 in February. A figure above 50 suggests expansion. Overall eurozone manufacturing PMI held steady in February at 51.0. France's manufacturing sector contracted to 47.6, the lowest score in the eurozone. Manufacturing in the eurozone matched January's figure, even though new orders rose to a seven month-high. Meanwhile, lower oil prices have reduced manufacturing input

Ireland's manufacturing growth seems to be resilient, said Investec's chief economist Philip O'Sullivan, but "any uncertainty ahead of the upcoming UK election - given that Ireland's closest neighbour has repeatedly been identified by manufacturers as a key source of demand - is likely to put that to the test". Job creation in Ireland's manufacturing sector reached its highest since May 1998, Markit

Greece, France and Austria all saw their manufacturing sectors contract in February. France's manufacturing PMI fell as sharp declines in output, new orders and employment weighed on the index. "France is the most worrying, not just because it trails behind all other countries, but it is also the only country seeing a steepening downturn," said Markit's chief economist Chris Williamson. viewpoint

Election: Polling day

Campaigning door to door in Alqueria may require persuasion, tact and a strong political platform but some form of military training would also be an advantage. The only really safe way is to canvass on the doorsteps of those already converted to your cause. This may seem a bit pointless, but it is at least safe. Supporters of rival parties and the apathetic majority are likely to greet unannounced political pollsters with verbal and often physical abuse. Rodriquez only associated with his own followers and consequently thought the whole world was behind him. He became completely out of touch with the feelings and aspirations of the ordinary citizen, a failing common to most of today’s politicians. Manuela and her B.O.N.K. party however were conscious of the need to win voters from opposition parties. Manuela had, using her undoubted charm and expertise in certain areas recruited several of the younger and fitter men from the ranks of Rodriquez’s V.I.L.E. Party. A number of older V.I.L.E. supporters had been won over with liberal quantities of Remitroot Whisky. The trick would be to keep them in a state of intoxication until they had polled in favour of B.O.N.K. Then the Whisky supply would dry up and the erstwhile voters left in a state of ‘cold turkey’. Loco Paco, leader of the D.A.F.T. party didn’t bother to canvass at all. He didn’t quite grasp the situation or the electoral process, in fact he didn’t even know what day it was. But he was happy in his own little comfortable world, a world of singing dung beetles and dancing rodents. Public debates in the Village Square

were an interesting s p e c t a c le. The three p a r t y leaders stood on a makeshif t platform st aring down at a belligerent partisan crowd. Rodriquez assumed the assembled mass was there to back him and his egotistical arrogant policies. His V.I.L.E. party is nothing more than a personality cult. Manuela poured forth an erudite and persuasive speech praising the virtues of an anarchistic society. Her vision is a land where sexual freedom and cheap Remitroot Whisky are universal. Universal that is, not compulsory. Loco Paco for his part tried to catch imaginary dragonflies. Jeers, hoorays and blunt projectiles flew through the rarefied Alqueria air. The ‘politicians’ dived for cover, all except for Loco Paco. He was totally engrossed in catching one particularly evasive but imaginary dragonfly. The run up to any election is short in Alqueria. This avoided serious physical damage to the Village and limited civil unrest. Polling day duly arrived and a crowd gathered outside the Bar La Casa Devante where the ballot boxes sat expectantly. We shall watch the vote closely, analyse the exit poll and wait for the final count.

Entry or Exit Since we have become a 3 animal household I’m beginning to feel the strain - I have become an unpaid and unappreciated doorwoman. Lucy, The Dog That Is Not Ours, has always been exacting in her door demands. She will gaze wistfully at the door in question for a few seconds before raising a polite paw and giving it a gentle scratch. If this doesn’t produce a fairly instant response, she throws manners to the wind, and goes for the unfortunate door with all the vigour of a badger digging out a new sett. At least when I have rushed to open it while there is still a shred of wood left undamaged, she will favour me with an appreciative glance and a wag of her tail as she goes upon her way. In contrast, Her Imperial Majesty, Sayyida al Hurra, Queen of Darkness, She Who Must Not Be Questioned, a.k.a. Sid, Somebody Else’s Cat, will glide up to the door, sit down in front of it and fix it with a stare so hypnotic that it all but bursts into flames. When I open it she simply sashays through – it is, after all, her divine right to have someone open the door at her command, even if that door does have a perfectly adequate catflap in it. Her kitten, Mr Tommy Fluffypants, now that he has grown from a tiny ball of kitteny fluff into a much larger ball of fluffy teenager attitude, will demonstrate his grasp of elementary engineering and applied physics by trying to

Putting The Boot In by Paul Martin

Don’t we just love to knock the rich and famous? It’s a national pastime. Whether it be politicians, footballers, film stars, rock stars or entrepreneurs, we’ll dig the knife in at any opportunity. This last week is a case in point. Lady Gaga performed what I considered to be an amazing medley of songs from ‘The Sound of Music,’ at the Oscars Award Ceremony in America. Now I’ve always been a fan of her music and I think she ticks all the boxes when it comes to being a rock star; she’s larger than life, controversial, over the top, but she can really sing, which really does help if you’re in the music business. But I never for one moment knew she could sing in the way she did at the Oscar ceremony last Saturday, and I suspect not many other people did either. Although I hate the phrase, it was a truly ‘mind blowing’ performance. Now if you’ve seen the film – who hasn’t – or better still, the stage show, (which I saw in London shortly after Connie Fisher launched the new Andrew Lloyd Webber production), then you’ll know it opens with belter, ‘Sound of Music’, a song requiring a full vocal range and a lot of skill to execute. Lady Gaga did it perfectly and went on to include three other classics from the show, all of which were beautifully sung. She received – and rightly so – a standing ovation. This woman can really sing and yet the following day, the internet was full of people criticising her, accusing her of miming, of it not being her voice and so on – how ludicrous. Julie Andrews came on stage

afterwards and it was quite a moving moment, each clearly moved by the others talent, and that’s how it should be. A few days later, at the Brits Awards in London, Madonna took a nasty fall while singing her latest song at the O2 Arena. Well again, like her or not, you have to admire her courage and professionalism for getting up and continuing the routine, I’m sure there are many who wouldn’t have managed to do that. Again I heard, and read many comments basically saying, ‘Never liked her, serves her right.’ Well how can it serve someone right, falling backwards down two high steps onto ones back, while performing live in front of a theatre and TV audience? Madonna has been the leading female vocalist for more than thirty years, so she must be doing something right. Ok, they’re just two examples from a week in which award ceremonies and celebrities have been very much in the news, but it would just be nice sometimes for some people to give a bit of credit where it’s due and not constantly find fault and criticise. None of us are perfect for heavens sake and neither is the world, but with a little more understanding and compassion, we might all see ourselves, and the world in a better light.

By Jos Biggs

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk insert a paw between door and jamb and doing his best to create a cat-sized gap by levering the two apart. If this fails he will then throw himself bodily against the door in the manner of a TV cop breaking into the villain’s apartment; He has been watching far too much violent telly – I really should restrict his viewing to Antiques Roadshow, that is quite enough excitement for his impressionable young mind! The recent cold weather and rain has added another dimension to the in-out continuum. A demand to go out will be made, and I will once again cease whatever I am doing and open the door. The animal in question (generally the dog) will then gaze out at the weather, look up at me in a disappointed kind of a way, because it is obviously my fault that it is raining, before turning tail and going back to bed. What our house really needs is revolving doors!

Stolen Picasso turns up in New York

A Picasso painting that was stolen from a Paris museum has turned up in New York after being smuggled in from Belgium. La coiffeuse (The Hairdresser), painted in 1911 during the artist’s Cubist period, is worth several million dollars, but the shipping form claimed it was just worth €30. The valuable artwork, which is the property of the French state, had disappeared from a storage room at the Georges Pompidou Centre. The theft was noticed in 2001 following a loan request from another art centre. A package sent from Belgium was intercepted by US customs officials and found to contain the painting and the following content

description: “Handicraft / 30 E / Merry Christmas,” according to a New York district attorney named Loretta Lynch. La coiffeuse was sent to the Homeland Security Investigations department, which investigates international art trafficking. “A lost treasure has been found,” Lynch told AFP news agency. “Because of the blatant smuggling in this case, this painting is now subject to forfeiture to the United States. Forfeiture of the painting will extract it from the grasp of the black market in stolen art so that it can be returned to its rightful owner,” added Lynch. Elpais.com

Lemon-Garlic Shrimp & Grits Ingredients 3/4

cup instant grits Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 1/4 pounds medium shrimp, peeled and deveined, tails intact 2 large cloves garlic, minced Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional) Juice of 1/2 lemon, plus wedges for serving 2 tablespoons roughly chopped fresh parsley

Grate the zest of 2 large lemons; thinly slice the fruit into rounds. Discard seeds. Toss the zest and slices with 3/4 teaspoon dried lavender, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 2 cups sugar. Cover for 24 hours. The next day, beat 4 eggs and 4 tablespoons melted butter; stir into the filling. Pour into pie shell. Perfect All-Butter Piecrust Pulse 3 1/2 cups flour, 1/4 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon salt in a food processor. Add 1 diced stick cold butter; process until combined. Add 2 more diced sticks cold butter; pulse three times, or until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Add 1 tablespoon white or cider vinegar. Gradually pour in 1/3 cup ice water, pulsing about four times until combined. Turn out onto a clean surface and press into a cohesive dough without overworking (you should see bits of butter). Wrap in plastic wrap and press into a 1-inch-thick disk; refrigerate at least 1 hour before rolling out How to Make a Pie

Method

Bring 3 cups of water to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat, covered. Uncover and slowly whisk in the grits, 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper. Reduce the heat to medium low and cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the parmesan and 1 tablespoon butter. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper. Cover to keep warm. Meanwhile, season the shrimp with salt and pepper. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp, garlic and cayenne, if using, and cook, tossing, until the shrimp are pink, 3

Directions

to 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and add 2 tablespoons water, the lemon juice and parsley; stir to coat the shrimp with the sauce and season with salt and pepper. Divide the grits among shallow bowls and top with the shrimp and sauce. Serve with lemon wedges www.foodnetwork.com GRITS

Shrimp come in all manner of colors including reddish- to light brown, pink, deep red, grayishwhite, yellow, gray-green and dark green. Some have color striations or mottling on their shells. Because of a heat-caused chemical change, most shrimp shells change color (such as from pale pink to bright red or from red to black) when cooked. Shrimp are available year-round & forms of shrimp are found in the marketplace—shelled or unshelled, raw or cooked and fresh or frozen. Raw shrimp should smell of the sea with no hint of ammonia. Cooked, shelled shrimp should look plump and succulent. Before storing fresh uncooked shrimp, rinse them under cold running water and drain thoroughly.

Though now commonly used to mean "hominy grits," the term "grits" actually refers to any coarsely ground grain such as corn, oats or rice. Most grits come in a choice of grinds — coarse, medium and fine. Grits can be cooked with water or milk — usually by boiling or baking — and eaten as cereal or served as a side dish.

Divide the chilled dough in half; roll 1 piece into a 12-inch, 1/8-inch-thick circle on a lightly floured surface (refrigerate the other piece). Roll the dough onto a rolling pin, then unroll it into a 9-inch glass pie plate, letting it hang over the edge; add filling. Roll out the other piece of dough and place over the filling; press the crust edges together and trim, leaving a 1-inch overhang. Roll up or pinch the overhang to seal. Place a foil-lined baking sheet on a rack in the lower third of the oven; preheat to 450 degrees. Wrap an oiled, wide band of foil around the pie edge to protect the crust. Make slashes in the top of the crust; chill for 30 minutes. Reduce the oven to 400 degrees. Bake the pie for 30 minutes. Remove the foil band, brush the crust with heavy cream and sprinkle with sugar. Bake until golden brown, about 30 minutes; cool before slicing. Read more at: http://www.foodnetwork.com

The best drinks to try in Spain

One of the main pleasures of traveling is discovering new food and drink. Not only are these delicious treats enjoyable in themselves, but they are such an important part of any culture that getting to know them is one of the very best ways to get the feel for a place and really sink in to the life there. Spain is a great place to do this. The Spanish take food and drink seriously, not in a solemn way, but as a great social pleasure to be enjoyed, and they have great respect for the quality of what they consume, for the hard work and artistry which goes into its preparation. So, here is an insider’s guide to the delights of Spanish drinks, some wellknown, some hidden gems. Enjoy. Tinto de verano Everybody has heard of sangria- the mixture of wine, juice, brandy and fruit pieces which for many people typifies Spain. There is no denying that it is a great drink, but on the down side you can normally only order it by the jug, which can be expensive. If what you are after is a quick, light, refreshing drink, then try tinto de verano a simple mixture of red wine and lemonade, usually served in a tall glass over ice – perfect for hot summer nights. San Miguel beer Most regions and even individual towns in Spain have their own brand of beer, but my person favorite is San Miguel, brewed in Malaga, the capital of the Costa del Sol. It is a light, crisp beer, with a smooth aftertaste and it goes down a treat on its own or with a meal. Sangria As is the case with so many Spanish specialties, there is no fixed sangria recipe. It consists of ‘a little bit of this, a little bit of that’, and whatever fruits happen to be in the kitchenSangría must always be served ice-cold. If serving from a punch bowl, stir it in the bowl before ladling it into a glass. Finally, if possible, drink it on the beach - there is no finer feeling Rioja wine This northern region gave its name to the most famous wine in Spain. The best known wines from Rioja are reds, which go very well with a good steak or other meats. Less well known but equally well worth trying are the lighter rosé versions and the crisp, fresh white wines. There is something to suit everybody’s taste and pocket, from good simple table wines to grand reserves which can live with the world’s finest and which change hands for hundreds of euros. Cava wine This is the Spanish equivalent of Champagne and comes from Catalonia, in the north-east of Spain. The most famous brand is Freixenet, which accounts for over half of all cava sales, although in total there are well over 200 cava producers. Cava is a light, normally dry sparkling wine, and it has a very important place in Catalan culture and cookery. Try it either as an aperitif, or with one of the combination dishes of poultry cooked with fruit for which Catalonia is famous. Licor Cuarenta y Tres ( Licor 43) This is quite simply the ultimate after-dinner drink. As the name suggests, it is

made from a mixture of 43 different ingredients, including citrus and other fruits, herbs and spices and vanilla, which all together produce a glowing golden drink with a smooth and warming flavor, containing hints of chocolate and bananas. Normally served over ice, it is slightly sweet, but with a serious bite. Don’t leave Spain without trying it! www.venere.com/

TV NEWSLETTER

march 2015

March !!! time rumbles along and spring starts to eye its way into life ......... carnival time has come and gone and the Almond blossom – in full flight whilst writing this – will be over for another year and the local farmers will be eyeing the trees to see how abundant the crop will be this year............. Plants in the “RAINBOW” garden are starting to stir ........ I even had to give the grass a first cut last week. All the animals in the camp are well although Scruffi , the oldest dog , is showing his age , like me ! , and trots along beside me on walks where as the others run “wild” on lead free walks. Regular readers will be pleased that mum Monk has settled well in the care home in Plymouth and mum Jones continues to live independently at home. Matt is loving his job near Coventry ....... we visit each other regularly. TV NEWS .......... Internet TV – long promoted by me as the way forward for viewing TV with no dishes or antenna needed did suffer a little in mid February ....... it seems nearly all suppliers had some issues with receptions which are now mostly resolved. I still maintain this is the way forward for TV viewing and predict it will be the ONLY way within 15 years ........... Once fibre optic cables are laid to all destinations and everyone can get decent reasonably fast internet the change will happen. We at RAINBOW promote several internet TV schemes (IPTV) with a vast array of channels – ask for details if you want more information. Those of us dinosaurs with poor internet and dishes already installed might consider upgrading their digiboxes ........Those with just standard viewing boxes really should consider upgrading to newer recording and HD units ........ The recording boxes – which many have but many do not – will allow you to record programmes for latter watching when you want or record programmes when you are out. They are really easy to use and set up – gone are the days of the old video programming – 10 minutes to set a recording up and then it did not work. If mum Monk at 93 sets here new PLUS box to record what she wants then anyone can ! You can also watch one programme whilst recording another, record two at the same time if not watching, pause live TV and generally organise your

viewing when you want to view rather than when the programme schedulers think you want to. RAINBOW stock and supply a variety of PLUS boxes – ask us for details ......... Many expats in Spain ask if they can get Spanish TV to both watch it and help with the language learning – I am not sure live TV helps the learning – it is spoken fast and once gone its gone !!! However I know of several clients who have recorded programmes then spent some time watching them ........ The beauty of a recording is that you can go back – time and time again if necessary – until you have both spoken the “line” and translated it ............There are plenty of Spanish soaps ..... Get into recording one and spend time watching it – speaking the lines and translating them – repeating as many times as it takes to “get it”. Spanish TV is relatively easy to receive from a “normal” TV antenna – or through the internet (movistar are promoting TV as part of their pack) and all newer TV’s will have the required digital decoder built in for viewing ......... once again ask us for details – we can install the necessary antennas. With the spring house buying season here (hopefully !) just a word to buyers ....... if you will want UK TV at your new home just get an experienced TV installer to check it is available before you sign the final deed............ sometimes it is just not possible to mount the BIG dishes required for UK TV and if really good internet is not available then you will have problems ...........To late after you have purchased. That’s it for this month........ Article sponsored by RAINBOW SATELLITES ...... the company for all your TV needs in the Murcia Region of Southern Spain. charity swim

Too late to be talking about our Annual New Years day swim, not really, we have just received the last sponsorship contribution and this year have raised 2488.16 Euros from the efforts of the 23 intrepid souls who braved the waves, with ages spanning some 7 decades our youngest at 10 and our most mature at 83, it was a riot. Dressed in fancy dress as well as the more traditional costumes the swimmers entertained an audience of some 350 people. This s the 10th time that PALS (Protection and Life Saving) have held this event and already we have requests for sponsorship forms for 2016. PALS have over their 15 years of charity status donated over 1 quarter of a million Euros for the purchase of life saving equipment in and around Mazarron most going to 112 and Cruz Roja but also to the local Saluds’ and to other ‘’hands on’’ medical emergency teams. Included in this is the purchase of a new ambulance (with assistance from The Lions and CCIR but PALS being the largest cash provider). The other equipment includes two emergency hospital trauma tents (Used at the

Lorca Earthquake disaster) two inshore rescue jets skis, 9 defibrillators and a mass of other state of the art ambulance and light weight machines and items all specifically donated for the use of all, regardless of race, creed , gender or age. In addition PALS initiated a concert for the Lorca Earthquake and raised over 6000 Euros in equipment which was then also used when that city was devastated by a Gota Fria. In raising funds PALS have events to include a coach trip to Portugal in May (7 nights ,519 Euros) and a Christmas break in Benidorm (4 days 245 Euros) available, all other events this year are sold out, and PALS pride themselves on offering great trips, holidays and events at extremely good prices and in our spirit of honesty advise that the accounts are available for inspection at any time. We are currently considering the funds that we hold for future purchases and, if required , for local and regional disasters Any information call 626 460 465

Many Animals ncluding Your Dog

May Have Horrible Short-Term Memories

Dogs may forget an event less than two minutes after it happened, according to a new study Dogs may be glad to see an old friend, but they won’t remember when they last saw her—they forget events within two minutes. The next time your dog happily greets an old friend, remember this: Your pup likely can’t remember the last time they met. We often say someone has “a memory like an elephant,” or, if it’s a forgetful person, “a goldfish.” But in comparing our memory with that of animals, what’s the truth? A recent investigation of shortterm memory suggests animals don’t remember specific events much at all—instead, they store away useful information about what could help them survive. Covering 25 species that ranged from dolphins to bees, the study found the average short-term memory span of animals was 27 seconds (which was the midway point before the memory is lost), according to a team led by Johan Lind, an ethologist at the Centre for the Study of Cultural Evolution at Stockholm University, Sweden. (See “Dolphins Have Longest Memories in Animal Kingdom.”) Dogs forget an event within two minutes. Chimpanzees,

at around 20 seconds, are worse than rats at remembering things, while the memory spans of three other primates—baboons, pig—tailed macaques, and squirrel monkeys—exceeded only bees (the sole study participant that wasn’t either a mammal or a bird). Since chimps are our closest living relatives, Lind said he was surprised by their poor performance. It suggests human capacity for memory evolved after we branched from the most recent shared ancestor with chimps, over six million years ago. Reported in late 2014 in the journal Behavioural Processes, the findings drew on data from almost a hundred studies of captive animals that used a memory test of recent random events known as the delayed matching-tosample (or DMTS) method. In this test, an

animal is typically shown a visual stimulus such as a red circle. The red circle disappears, then, after a delay, it’s shown again with another sample stimulus—a blue square, say. The animal, usually with the incentive of a food reward, has to select the original sample it saw. Compared with animals, humans find this type of test a breeze—we pick the correct sample effortlessly after 48 hours or more, studies have shown. “The data tell us that animals have no long-term memory of arbitrary events,” Lind said. Based on the new study, “we think humans’ ability to remember arbitrary events is unique.” Memories Not Created Equal This ability is also called episodic memory, and it allows us to remember almost any occurrence, however trivial, for long periods. “We experience this daily when we remember where we parked the car or that we have to pay a bill next week,” Lind said. While there are plenty of examples of animals with long memories—elephants never forgetting a face, the cat that’s scared of the pet carrier after a past visit to the vet, swallows returning to last summer’s nest—they aren’t using episodic memory, according to Lind. Such cases “are due to associative memories,” he says. They’re not based on “memories of specific events. In the second case, the cat associates the carrier with danger. Such memories are very robust and will stay for a long time—for life—in animals.” That’s because animals may have specialized memory systems hardwired to remember certain “biologically relevant information” ( the study authors proposed. Take the example of the western scrub jay, a foodcaching bird whose ability to remember and choose between its buried stores has been reported as evidence of episodic-like memory in animals. But, said Lind, “if these scrub jays had an episodic memory, as humans do, they would have no problem solving the matching-to-sample experiment.” The scrub jays’ performance in the experiment is really no different than that of other birds, however. Their “memory will decay within half a minute,” he said. source: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/

Film Review The Theory of Everything “To be told you are going to be dead in two years, and to be still alive now and to have done the things he’s done is absolutely amazing.”(Lisa Bruce/ Producer.) Stephen Hawking is 72. When he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease he was told the maximum life expectancy would be two years from the diagnosis. He was a PhD student in 1963. He beat the odds and probably owes his life to Jane Hawking, his first wife. He is still seeking theories of everything possible to explain our existence. Eddie Redmayne’s performance as the physicist Stephen Hawking won him his first Oscar in the Best Actor category for such an outstanding performance: “Eddie’s performance is amazing. The film is based on Jane Hawking’s memoirs: “Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen.” Felicity Jones plays Jane, a young girl enchanted by the geeky Hawking at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1963. She is studying French and Spanish to his cosmology which he defines as being “a kind of religion for intelligent atheists.” Jane’s friend Diane isn’t very impressed with Stephen or any of the scientists frequenting the bar. He is strange, clever and goes to ban the bomb marches. Yet there must have been an attraction because in a short while he invites her to the May ball, filmed in the grounds of St John’s (which doubles for Trinity). The passionate kiss happens on Kitchen Bridge, Cambridge’s second oldest bridge. Hawking is studying for a PhD but he is initially indecisive about his area of research until he eventually

pause for thought

We Christians often agonise over the reasons for falling Church attendance. Many consider the Church too old-fashioned, so advocate a programme of modernisation. Others blame the lack of entertainment value, suggesting the need for more activities and attractions so Church can compete with Television, Sport, etc. Whilst yet more counsel the Church to moderate its message so as to serve a wider section of the community, being less judgemental and more tolerant of modern culture, avoiding offence by speaking no more of ‘Sin’ whilst accepting all forms of spirituality. Well call me oldfashioned and bigoted, but I strongly believe it’s these very arguments that are preventing our Churches from growing. The Church isn’t about entertaining or amusing people, but of presenting the message of an unchanging God, who despite our frequent failures to live as He requires, offers one simple means of forgiveness through the death, on our behalf of Jesus Christ. Whenever we, as Christians ‘water down’ this message by suggesting that various faults aren’t really so terrible, or that there might be some alternative method of attaining heaven, we detract from that message. We all accept advertisers showing clean items alongside grubby ones, to illustrate the cleansing power of their particular product. Without such demonstration I may well

be satisfied with a far from perfect wash. And similarly, an essential part of the Christian message is to show our lives alongside that of God’s perfect standard, exposing our failings like stains on a soiled sheet, so we may appreciate our need of cleansing. This exposure of dirt, or sin, isn’t being judgmental, as I’m no better than anyone else, but rather that we may realise just how much we need Jesus, who alone is able to clean that sin completely away. And the great value of this message we Christians should be proclaiming is that it offers certainty of life beyond the grave; so if only we were all living proof of this, then I believe our Churches would indeed be filled with people anxious to learn more. n e d r a Growing Mediterranean G & Home fru its successfully

Micro-climate problems

The main constraint is the micro-climate of your garden or orchard. Mediterranean climate conditions are generally described as hot summers and cold winters with most rain in the spring and autumn. But this can vary tremendously in reality.

The potential There is an enormous number of types and varieties of fruit that can be grown under Mediterranean climate conditions ranging from soft fruits to grapes and temperate and sub-tropical climate fruit trees. Even tropical fruits are possible in the warmer south facing frost free spots. In our best selling book ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’ we describe over seventy types and have grown half ourselves in a 350 metre above sea level valley some dozen kilometres from the Mediterranean sea shore. For those who live in apartments many trees , especially if dwarf varieties or more vigorous varieties grafted to dwarfing root stocks can be grown successfully in containers. There is a special chapter about this in the book ‘Apartment Gardening - Mediterranean style’.

We have experienced temperatures from one offs plus 47 degrees centigrade down to a wind factor minus 15. The latter was when we had the coldest week in our area for fifty years in March 2005. It was the end of our most tender fruit trees including a productive mango tree and couple of carefully nurtured pineapple plants. Normally our temperatures range from 35 down to minus one or two but on the coast this would be 38 down to 2 degrees. Our land faces south and has long hours of sunshine all year round but just 800 metres away properties on the north facing slopes of the valley have few hours sunshine and very heavy frosts every winter. Re rain we have had just 400 mm of rain in a year up to 650 mm in a day in November 1996.

fruit fly

Seven success factors for fruit trees

"Where the heck did all these fruit flies from from?!" Have you ever found your kitchen teeming with fruit flies that seemed to appear out of nowhere? These tiny nuisances can quickly multiply in number, and be tough to get rid of once they're around. So how did these fruit flies get in your kitchen? Contrary to popular belief, this isn't a case of spontaneous generation. Fruit flies are built to find fermenting fruit. Though small, they can detect the smell of ripe fruits and vegetables from a good distance away. If there's a bowl of fruit on your kitchen counter, there's probably a fruit fly or two looking for a way into your home to get to it. Because these insects are so tiny, they can get in through window screens or crevices around windows or doors. Once inside, they reproduce. Before you know it, you've got yourself a full-fledged fruit fly infestation (say that 5 times fast!). Sometimes, fruit flies hitch a ride into your home on fruits or vegetables. Fruit flies lay eggs on the skin of very ripe or fermenting fruit. Those bananas you brought home from the grocery store may already harbor a new generation of fruit flies. If you let your tomatoes over ripen on the vine before picking them, you may be harvesting fruit fly eggs along with your crop. Unrefrigerated fruit, whether its on display in the grocery store, still in the garden, or sitting in a bowl on your kitchen table, may attract fruit flies.

1. That you take note of the drought and frost resistances of each type of fruit before you decide what to try growing. This information is provided in the book ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’. 2. That you prepare large planting holes and work well rotted manures and compost into the planting soil.

foliar feeds. 7. That fruit is harvested branch by branch when ripe, not all as once generally when under-ripe as is done by many commercial growers.

5. That annual winter pruning is carried out to stimulate fruiting buds and ensure that most sap goes to these branches. 6. That trees are sprayed at the appropriate times of year with ecological insecticides fungicides and

3. That young trees are firmly staked until the guyrope roots are fully developed. 4. That you keep root balls damp but not wet until deep tap roots have been out down.

Fruit flies have notoriously fast life cycles; they can go from egg to adult in just 8 days. That means one overly ripe tomato left unused on your counter can give rise to a small fruit fly swarm within a week. Fruit flies are also known for their persistence once indoors. They don’t even need fruit to keep reproducing. Fruit flies can breed in the slime layer inside slowdraining plumbing, or on an old, sour mop or sponge.

On a bright sunny morning the format for this week’s competition was a team game of `yellow peril` played on our home course La Marquesa. With ideal conditions some good scores were expected, as long as team members managed to score double when it was their turn to play the yellow ball. Clearly one team had the winning formula, coming in first place with an impressive score of 148 points, the team of Pino Perito, Joe Ogden, Gordon Bourne and Bev Fairhurst.
