Spain arrests eight suspected Jihadists Spanish authorities arrested eight suspected members of a Jihadist network on Friday who allegedly called for terrorist attacks in Spain and tried to recruit for the Islamic State group. In raids in the vicinity of Madrid and Barcelona, agents took into custody suspects who “called for the commission of terrorist acts in Spain inspired by techniques used in other countries,” an interior ministry statement said. The suspects also allegedly attempted to “localise and select radicals inclined to adopt the Jihadist ideology” and put them in touch with IS members abroad. Spanish authorities said the suspects were in contact with an IS member “who was supervising their activities from Syria
and Iraq.” The alleged Jihadists, six men and two women, are suspected of targeting immigrants and Spanish people with Moroccan origins. A Spanish judge on Thursday remanded two other suspected Jihadists in custody on terrorism charges following their arrest in Spain’s north African territory of Ceuta. The two suspects, Spaniards “of Moroccan origin,” were accused of belonging to a group “prepared” to launch possible attacks in Europe, authorities said. About 60 people charged in Islamist terrorist cases were being held in Spain at the start of 2015, a law enforcement source said. thenews.com.pk

Clarkson hints at BBC exit
Last week, RadioTimes.com broke the news that Jeremy Clarkson was considering quitting the BBC altogether, even if he was cleared over his “fracas” with Top Gear producer Oisin Tymon. And now the presenter – who was suspended on Tuesday over his actions – has hinted he will indeed leave the Corporation following his latest run-in, reportedly over a lack of hot food after a long day of filming the BBC2 series. Appearing to compare himself to a prehistoric beast, Clarkson writes in his column for The Sun newspaper, “I think it’s fair to say that nature made a mistake when it invented the dinosaur. It was too big, too violent and with such small and puny arms it was never going to be able to operate heavy machinery or even enjoy a bit of special ‘me’ time. “So one day all the dinosaurs died – and now, many years later, no one mourns their passing.” He continues: “Let’s be honest. These big imposing creatures have no place in a world that has moved on.” Clarkson’s cryptic column also contains a thinly concealed dig at the Beeb, talking of, “the modern, risk-averse world of health and safety,” before concluding, “The fact is that you can start as many campaigns as you like and call on the support of politicians from all sides, but the day must come when you have to wave goodbye to the big monsters and move on.” A petition – set up by right wing blogger Guido Faulkes – calling for Clarkson to be reinstated has already gained over 870,000 signatures ahead of the BBC’s disciplinary
panel, led by Ken MacQuarrie, which is rumoured to begin on Monday. Clarkson’s suspension means the next two episodes of Top Gear – which he presents with Richard Hammond and James May – have been pulled from the schedules, with the series finale (set to air on 22nd March) hanging in the balance. In addition to to his veiled remarks, Clarkson also made a brief, direct reference to his suspension. “I don’t intend to dwell here on what happened then or what will happen in the future. I’m sure you’re as fed up with the story as I am. “One of the things that has cheered me is how many people have expressed support in the last few days. I’m touched and grateful.” Although, he did take time to address rumours he’d resorted to taking the bus, a report that first appeared in The Times newspaper. “I can assure you that things are bad. But they are not that bloody bad.” radiotimes.com

Cyclone devastates South Pacific islands
Cyclone Pam has slammed into the south Pacific archipelago of Vanuatu leaving “complete devastation” in its wake, aid agencies say. Houses in the capital, Port Vila, were destroyed and “people are wandering the streets looking for help”, said Tom Skirrow of Save the Children. He said eight people were confirmed dead, but UN agencies say dozens may have been killed. Vanuatu’s president said he had a “heavy heart” and appealed for aid. Pam has brought winds of up to 270km/h (170mph) and torrential rain. Chloe Morrison, an emergency communications officer with World Vision who is in Port Vila, said on Saturday that streets were littered with roofing, uprooted trees and toppled power lines. She said there were reports of entire villages in remote areas being destroyed. “It’s still really quite dangerous outside. Most people are still hunkering down,’’ she said. “The damage is quite extensive in Port Vila but there are so many more vulnerable islands. I can’t even imagine what it’s like in those vulnerable communities.’’ Mr Skirrow said: “The scene here this morning is complete devastation - houses are destroyed, trees are down, roads are blocked and people are wandering the streets looking for help. “Communications are down across much of the country with the total extent of the devastation unlikely to be known for several days.” Unicef spokeswoman Alice Clements
described the cyclone as “15-30 minutes of absolute terror” as it passed over Port Vila. “I saw the sliding doors from my threestorey-hotel room completely blow away - it was terrifying,” she said. Unicef in New Zealand warned that Cyclone Pam could be one of the worst ever weather disasters for the region. “While it is too early to say for certain, early reports are indicating that this weather disaster could potentially be one of the worst in Pacific history,” New Zealand executive director Vivien Maidaborn said in a statement. Vanuatu’s President Baldwin Londsdale was attending the World Conference on Disaster Risk and Reduction in Japan, where he appealed for international support. “I am speaking with you today with a heart that is so heavy,” he said. “I stand to appeal on behalf of the government and people of Vanuatu to the global community to give a lending hand.” Unconfirmed reports said that 44 people had died in Penama province in the northeast of Vanuatu, the UN’s Office for the Co-ordination for Humanitarian Assistance (UNOCHA) said earlier in a statement. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the country was preparing to send a crisis response team to Vanuatu if needed. Located about a quarter of the way from Australia to Hawaii, Vanuatu has a population of 267,000 spread over 65 islands. About 47,000 people live in the capital, Port Vila. bbc.co.uk

Comic Relief fundraising reaches £1 billion mark
Stephen Hawking, Daniel Craig, Lenny Henry, Dermot O’Leary and more helped to raise over £78 million during last night’s live show. Comic Relief fundraising reached the £1 billion mark during last night’s Red Nose Day coverage on the BBC. The charity – which first began 30 years ago – raised over £78 million during Friday night’s live show which featured the likes of Stephen Hawking, Daniel Craig and co-founder Lenny Henry who joined Claudia Winkleman and Russell Brand on stage to announce the landmark total. “This is a very strange moment for me,” said Comic Relief co-founder and vice chair Richard Curtis of the landmark amount. “When a bunch of comedians got together all those years ago we dreamed of raising a million or two, and never imagined the generosity that would be shown by the British public for so many years.” “Figures tell us that the billion pounds have helped around 50 million people in the UK and overseas, 50 million people whose lives have been
changed or saved by the generosity of people they’ve never met.” The new total – £1,047,083,706 – comes 27 years after the first Red Nose Day was held in 1988 and includes over £640,000 raised by X Factor presenter Dermot O’Leary’s 24hour dance marathon. Also on last night’s bill was a return for comedy favourites Mr Bean and The Vicar of Dibley, plus a 007 mockumentary featuring current Bond star Daniel Craig with Sir Roger Moore, Rory Kinnear, Ben Whishaw and director Sam Mendes. The winner of Comic Relief Bake Off was also unveiled, and the BBC screened special appeal films from the likes of Peter Capaldi, Olivia Colman and Idris Elba. Musical entertainment came in the form of John Legend and Sam Smith, along with a One Direction spoof comprised of Johnny Vegas, Vic Reeves, Patrick Kielty, Jack Dee and Mick Helm who took to the stage as No Direction. People’s Strictly for Comic Relief
Wednesday 11 March saw the first ever screening of People’s Strictly for Comic Relief, something which I am sure will be repeated after the terrific success of this one. The 6 contestants were selected for the show by being nominated for their services to different causes throughout the UK by the public, and I have included a short background on them along with their dance. The judges for this were Len Goodman, Darcy Bussell, Bruno Tonioli and just for this show Anton Du Beke. Opening the show was Multiple Sclerosis sufferer Trishna Bharadia who partnered Aljaz to dance a Jive. After being diagnosed with MS, Trishna has tirelessly supported other sufferers as she carried on dealing with her own associated problems a major one for this dance - fatigue. Trishna’s Jive was super for a first attempt, her arms were finished and clean and she was getting her knees well lifted. She could have been a bit softer through the knee action but otherwise a great start to the show. I gave her 7 and the judges a total of 35. Next to perform was Michael Pattie with Aliona and their Tango. Michael lost his son Dave to meningitis, as a result of which he set up a fund to raise money for research into the disease. He showed a nice staccatto action and retained his strong frame throughout the performance, the only problem was that his bottom was stuck out a bit but again a great performance. The judges awarded 33 and I gave him 8. Ex Royal Marine Medic Cassidy Little along with Natalie were next out with their Paso Doble. Cassidy lost his leg below the knee in Afghanistan but despite his injuries went back to help his injured colleagues pulling them to safety. I found the intensity, drama and power of this performance incredible. The characterisation was fantastic and the strength of line, high hips and arms throughout superb. He could have gone a long way in one of the normal shows! I awarded him 10 and the judges a perfect score of 40. Heather Parsons and Ian followed with a Viennese Waltz. On a skiing holiday, Heather contracted Necrotising Fasciitis, the skin eating bug leaving her in intensive care, in a coma for 2 weeks after organ failure and a heart attack and with only a 30% survival rate and 15 operations later she had lived to tell her
...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES story. She set up a charity ‘Where There’s a Will’ and is regularly a volunteer in ICU at her local hospital. She was extremely conscious that she was no longer pretty and people didn’t want to look at her and I’m delighted to say that after this show she is feeling positive about herself - well done Ian! She gave a nice elegant Viennese Waltz performance and retained her frame throughout the rhythm and position changes of her choreography. Her Waltz was a bit ‘skippy’ but again with the time restraints an excellent performance. I awarded her 8 and the judges 36. Phil Barnett and Jeanette with their American Smooth were next. A keen amateur dramatics fanatic, Phil sold his hairdressing business to set up a children’s theatre group ‘Kidz R Us’ for disadvantaged children in St Ives, Cornwall. He has helped children through very tough times, giving them their confidence back and raising over 2 million through their shows. Phil thoroughly enjoyed his performance on the show really getting into the character of the dance and despite a knee injury requiring surgery and delaying his training on the show by 2 weeks he still put in an excellent performance. I gave him 9 and the judges 40. Closing the show was Anna Kennedy and Robin with their Charleston. Anna has 2 severely autistic children now 22 and 25. But when they needed help in their younger years, there was insufficient there. Along with her husband, they went into huge debt, remortgaging their house to buy a building and convert it at a cost of over £627,000. Hillingdon House School started with just 19 children but now has 150 pupils, which is the largest school in Europe for children with Autistic and other learning disabilities. Anna averages only 2-3 hours sleep a night because of the demands of her children, yet still manages to ooze fun and energy. Her Charleston performance was ‘absolutely fabulous’, so much fun, energy lifts and tricks all pulled off superbly. I gave her 10 and she got yet another full house of 40 from the judges. My favourite 2 performances were Anna and Cassidy and during Friday’s show the result, after the public vote made Cassidy the winner of the first ever ‘People’s Stricly’. They all performed a closing number which would have graced any stage. All in all one of the best ‘Strictly’ shows I’ve ever seen I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done BBC - keep up the good work! I’ll be back in the Autumn with more ‘Strictly’ reports but in the meantime, come and join one of our classes (details in the Community News) and remember ‘ - Keep Dancing! Lions Club close the doors
It is with much sadness and great reluctance that Lions Club President Iain Bennett has announced the closure of the Torrevieja Cost Lions Club after 10 highly successful years serving the community of Torrevieja and surrounding villages. Despite the best efforts of successive Membership Directors and members, the Club have been unable to recruit members who were willing to take on the responsibilities associated with running a Lions Club to the extent that Iain and Janette Bennett have between them held the post of President for the past five years. The Club formed in 2005, received its Charter from Lions Clubs International on 15th February 2006. Over the ensuing 10 years the Club has helped hundreds of people in our Community raising and disbursing over 100,000.00 euros, indeed, over the last 18 months alone have disbursed over 30,000.00 euros. The Club working in association with Specsavers Torrevieja have collected over 14,000 pairs of used spectacles for recycling and Immediate Past President Janette was responsible for setting up the Specsavers initiative in Spain where all branches of Specsavers now collect glasses for recycling on behalf of Lions Clubs in Spain. Specsavers Torrevieja will continue to collect used spectacles for recycling and members of the public are encouraged to drop off their old spectacles there. The Club has been highly regarded locally and has received great support through sponsorship from local businesses over the years, those businesses include TV Choice Magazine, Comaskey Properties and Spanish Solutions, Bluemoon Solutions, Specsavers Torrevieja, Marabu Lounge, IBEX Insurance, Golden Leaves, Vincent Real Estate, Costa Blanca Green Fees, HiFX and GO Advertising. The Club particularly appreciate the support of the management and staff of Hotel Cabo Cervera who provided the Club meeting room free of charge for many years. A full list of those groups, Companies and individuals who have sponsored and supported the Lions will appear on the Club website at www.torreviejacostalions.org In closing the Club the members agreed to donate all the residue funds in the Club accounts to local groups and organisations, at the closing meeting held in Hotel Cabo Cervera on Thursday 12th March. Firstly a cheque for 2,500.00 euros was presented to Reach Out Torrevieja. This money was raised when the Lions in association with the Footlights Theatre Group from Calpe performed the Musical West Side Story in Teatro Municipal Torrevieja in February 2014. In normal circumstances those funds would have been presented long ago, however the funds were not released by the Town hall until 20th February 2015! Further cheques for 1,750.00 euros were presented to ALPE Torrevieja, AFA Torrevieja, ADIS Vega Baja and Vecinos de San Miguel Archangel all of whom the Lions have regularly supported over the years. There are still some funds due to the Lions from Teatro Municipal Torrevieja for shows that took place in 2009 and 2014 and in due course these funds will be presented to Reach Out Torrevieja and Vecinos de San Miguel Archangel. Lion President Iain would like to thank everyone who supported the Lions over the years including everyone who served as Lions and in particular those who held the key posts of President, Treasurer and Secretary year on year. It has been a great privilege to serve those in the community who are less fortunate than ourselves, and every single Lion member can be assured that together "We made a difference"

So the Murcians went to a bar across the road and had a café with the Spanish workers having their breakfast (beer and brandy) and the Almerians stood in the adjacent car park next to the basuras surrounded by 30 multinational campervans and waited for two dogs and Ray to arrive. The half the walkers got into Mike L’s Chrysler Voyager and the rest and two dogs got into 4 cars and made their way to Los Lobos where they interrupted a bustling market and a drunk with a megaphone who appeared to be calling the faithful to prayer. Across the dry riverbed and up the rambla through a flock of 1000 sheep and it was a pleasant walk up a wide track, passing ruined mining buildings for an hour or so. There were great views including snow on the Sierras. Halfway down, the walkers went left down a rough track while the ladies strolled down the path. There was a bit of scrambling while the two Mikes found the way down. Quote of the walk, Mike “ Normally we go a deliberate way, this time we are lost”.
But everyone made it down the rambla and Jon had the group collecting sun bleached bones to make his mobiles. There are no photos of the walkers this month as the unofficial photographer had to paint his casa, but there are two photos from the web. Lunch was in Méson Mi Cortijo in San Juan and the salad, meat, fish and postre with a little beer and wine was most welcome. Judge wants past and present Barça chiefs to stand trial in Neymar case
Spain. But the club failed to do so. Regarding the responsibility of current Barça president Bartomeu, who was only officially targeted in the case last month, the judge states that he was a key figure in the drafting of the contracts, as well as in moving the transfer forward and authorizing contract-related payments in 2014, on which tax went unpaid, as it also did in 2011 and 2013. The judge accepts the view of tax experts in the case that the tangle of contracts used to sign the Brazilian were aimed at “covering or hiding what they constituted in reality: a higher cost to the club of signing the player,” in order that tax payments might be surreptitiously avoided or reduced.
The web of contracts signed between Barcelona and Neymar’s father’s firm allowed directors to make three different counts of tax fraud as a club members believe that result of money they failed to hand over the operation cost €57.1 to the Tax Agency in connection with the million when in reality it was contracts signed to bring Neymar to the €94.8 million. team from Brazilian side Santos. Soccer club itself also faces court over tax irregularities in signing of Brazilian superstar A Spanish High Court judge wants to place Barcelona soccer club president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rosell, as well as the club itself, on trial for tax and administrative crimes over the signing of Brazilian star Neymar. In a judicial order issued on Friday, the examining magistrate, Pablo Ruz, decided to press ahead with a case that opened in 2013, and rejected Bartomeu and Rosell’s request for a stay of proceedings. With the investigation phase ended, the case now moves to the prosecution so that it can present its accusation writ within the next 10 days. Ruz believes that Rosell, Bartomeu and the club may have incurred in as many as
He calculates that the club paid a total of €83,371,000 for the player, notwithstanding other contingent amounts, and raises the amount of tax defrauded to €13 million. The size of this sum is one of the main reasons why the case comes under the jurisdiction of the National High Court rather than a Barcelona court, as Rosell had requested.
The prosecutor, José Perals, feels that Barça should have withheld income tax on Neymar's payments, as the player had already established his fiscal residence in

The original lawsuit was brought by club member Jordi Cases, after he asked the club to clarify the Neymar deal and received no reply. Rosell stepped down in January of last year
after becoming an official target of the investigation into tax irregularities that may have been committed in 2011 and 2013 in connection with the Brazilian player’s move. His place was taken by vicepresident Bartomeu, whose term runs out in 2016. Bartomeu was targeted last month after the public prosecutor asked the judge to investigate whether last year he also failed to pay the Tax Agency €2.8 million in taxes relating to Neymar’s transfer. Spanish woman claiming to be Salvador Dalí’s daughter than two decades after the was agreed that further DNA testing would
More Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dalí died, a woman claiming to be his daughter has lodged a paternity suit, asking for help in obtaining DNA evidence to back her claim. Pilar Abel, 58, claims that her mother and the artist met in the 1950s when her mother was working for a family that would often spend summers in Cadaqués, close to where Dalí had a home. The pair “had a friendship that developed into clandestine love,” said Abel, in documents presented to a Madrid court. Abel was born in 1956. At the time, Dalí would have been married to Gala, born Elena Ivanovna Diakonova. The pair married in 1934 and had no children. Driven by her mother’s repeated comments that she was the daughter of Dalí, Abel took a DNA test in Madrid in 2007, using hair and skin remains that she had obtained from a death mask of the painter. The results were inconclusive. She then turned to Dalí’s close friend and official biographer, Robert Descharnes. It
be carried out in Paris using medical samples that had belonged to Dalí. Abel said she never received the results of the test. On Thursday, she took her battle to a Madrid court, asking for help in obtaining the results or, if necessary, backing to have another DNA test carried out. If there is insufficient genetic material for the test, the court documents raise the possibility of exhuming Dalí’s remains. Abel’s legal challenge is filed against the heirs of the painter, specifically Spain’s tax office and public administration, as well as the Dalí Foundation. In 2008, Descharnes’ son Nicolas refuted Abel’s paternity claim, saying that the doctor who had carried out the paternity tests in Paris had verbally communicated to Abel that the tests were negative. “There is no relationship between this woman and Salvador Dalí,” he told Spanish agency Efe at the time. theguardian.com/

Give Your Body a Spring Cleaning! veggies, such as beets, carrots, green beans, and new potatoes, begin overflowing the market stalls. Purifying fresh herbs like basil, cilantro, and parsley are again robust and local. Such vibrant produce is concentrated with quality nutrition and vitality— perfect for making quick, cleansing broths, crunchy, colorful stirfries, and, of course, powerful detox juices. Generally speaking, it’s also wise to eat less this time of year and give your body a break. You may even consider doing a partial fast on juices or light soups. Steer away from rich, heavy foods that are
difficult to digest. Include mostly warm, light foods that counter the damp coolness of the spring season. Use spices such as coriander, fennel, cumin, and turmeric to improve your digestion—as well as your complexion. In place of coffee, cleansing ginger tea or hot water with lemon are great ways to warm up. Be sure to include plenty of nutritious spring veggies in your diet and allow them to stimulate the liver, kidneys, and digestive tract to release longstored toxins. Extend spring cleaning to your body and experience complete rejuvenation. http://static.prozeny.cz/
Out with the old, in with the new. Come spring, this theme seems genetically encoded in every single one of us. From the bear emerging from his long hibernation to the trees and flowers blossoming, the waking world makes its annual fresh start each spring. In harmony with the season’s revival, our bodies also shift into high gear, letting us experience a welcome burst of energy. Intuitively, we clean out our closets, swing open the windows, and let in the fresh air. But why should spring cleaning apply simply to our closets and cupboards? After all, our bodies could use it as well. According to Ayurveda, March to May is the body’s natural time for cleansing and detoxification. A spring detox renews your energy, enlivens your skin, and boosts your immune system. It also helps you lose winter weight and eliminate stored toxins. During the winter, it’s easy to accumulate toxins in our bodies. This is because we spend most of our time indoors, we breathe less fresh air, we don’t exercise or perspire as much, and we’re usually less active—after all, who wants to go biking in the biting cold when they could stay in, order a pizza, and watch a movie? But following the season of short, chilly days, limited sunshine, and comfort foods, the energetic spirit of spring stirs our excitement and enthusiasm for freshness, cleansing, and rejuvenation. One step ahead of us, Mother Nature is ready to meet our needs. Tender asparagus and crisp baby

SOLTIMES MARCH 2015
LEGAL CORNER Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Today’s article is a bit of a copout! There I’ve said it so ‘Publish and be Damned’ say I. How is it a cop-out? Instead of talking about the latest 10 Terabyte (10 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 x 1024 KB’s) Fixed Disk Drive (Hard Disk Drive – lots of names and all are right!) which holds not only a HUGE amount of information (data) but also, currently, holds the record for being the largest available Fixed Disk Drive, I am, quite simply, going to point out a few Windows tricks that will help make your computer life a little easier. 1. Have you ever found the web page that you are looking at just too big for the browser screen and that you’re constantly having to move the bottom ‘slider’ bar backwards and forwards to read it all? My first suggestion is one of absolute simplicity – Press and hold the ‘Ctrl’ key on your keyboard and then tap the ‘-’ (minus) key. This will reduce the size of the test and pictures to allow for more on the screen. If you find that you have taking it a little too far then you can always hold the ‘Ctrl’ key and tap the ‘+’ key to enlarge the contents of the screen. As a final ‘throwaway’ tip, when you have finished looking at the screen at the enlarged / reduced view you can again hold the ‘Ctrl’ key and tap the 0 (number zero) key to return it to ‘normal’ (whatever that might be :-) 2. Here’s one that most people wouldn’t have even thought about. Did you know that you can move that Taskbar around? The taskbar is the bar that holds the ‘Start’ button and where you find all the open ‘windows’. Most people choose to leave it where it is, at the bottom of the screen. I’m not most people! To me, ‘drop-down menu’s’ should drop down and the only way that is possible is to have the taskbar at the top. To change it’s location, if you feel inclined to, you just right click with the cursor over the ‘Start button’, select ‘properties’ and un-tick ‘lock the taskbar’.
Now you can drag it to whichever edge of the screen takes your fancy even if it on either side! 3. Windows 7 users will have found the button’s that are sat on the taskbar as a sort-cut to programs can make life so much easier. So there are two (2) ways to do this, there is the Microsoft authorised way of going to the ‘Start button’ and looking for the program that you want to pin to the taskbar, right clicking over the chosen program to get a ‘drop-down’ menu and left click on the ‘Pin to Taskbar’ option. This works faultlessly every time! Then there is the Trevor method. Find the program and left click and hold the program you want, then drag it to the taskbar and un-click. Also works flawlessly every time! Choice is now yours. 4. Use your File Manager as a viewer. When you open your file manager there is an option to view the contents of a file (picture formats) which can be found next to the ‘?’ on the top right of the screen. It will normally be turned ‘on’. Goto a picture folder and open it. When you choose a picture, a much larger version will be displayed in the ‘Preview’ pane. Left clicking on the divider to the left of the ‘Preview’ pane and resize it. 5. This is probably the most useful of all the suggestion made today in this article. It is to contact me for free advice concerning your computer or tablet at the address or phone number below. Hope you are all enjoying this glorious weather and may it last a little while longer :-)

How to plant a tree civvy street version; in autumn dig a hole and put compost or mulch at the bottom. Carefully place the tree upright in the hole making sure the roots are untangled to enable them to spread. Then using a mix of soil and compost fill the hole in. Press down firmly yet gently to leave a shallow depression so water collects around the base of the tree. Water liberally and again every few days for a month. After that once weekly will do for the next year until the tree is established. Spanish council employee version; buy the tree from a relation/friend of the Mayor as they own a garden centre. We have a house in joint names valued at approximately 180,000€ and savings of approx. 40,000€. We would like to know how much inheritance tax my wife would have to pay if I deceased, and how much capital gains tax we would pay if we decided to sell. A. You are going to like the answers. Inheritance tax: If you deceased, your wife would pay NO INHERITANCE TAX, as she would be entitled to 175,000€ tax free, which is more than the value of the estate she would receive. Please note that the 175,000 exemption in Andalucía, is an all or nothing exemption. If you are one cent over, you pay on all but the first 16,000€. Each autonomous region of Spain has it´s own exemption rates, and the legislation applicable (and therefore the levels of exemption) will be the
one of the autonomous region of Spain where the heir has been a resident for the larger part of the five years prior to the death. Believe it or not, very often tax planning involves moving from one area of Spain to another. Incredible but true: a wife resident in Almería inheriting a net estate of 813,000€ from her husband would pay just under 200,000€ in Andalucia while if the same wife had been living in Madrid she would have paid 0 inheritance tax! Could the lady have avoided the tax? Yes, but the tax planning would have required the family moved to Madrid. Capital gains tax: you will pay NO CAPITAL GAINS TAX because if you are over 65 years of age and are selling your main home (you can not claim this if you are a non resident), the sale is exempt of capital gains tax.

Joy for Britons duped into buying illegally built Spanish homes
Joy for Britons duped into buying illegally-built Spanish homes as country brings in laws which prevent their properties being bulldozed without being compensated British couples duped into buying illegal Spanish homes finally have a reason to celebrate after a decade of campaigning led to a change in the law. During the property boom, Britons who dreamed of spending their retirement in sunny Spain forked out their life savings to buy new homes only to find they could be demolished and they were not guaranteed any compensation. But thanks to years of campaigning by heart-broken Spanish homeowners, the law now states homes will not be demolished until they receive a payout. At the beginning of the last decade, new homes were built in abundance in Spain and buyers from northern Europe were keen to snap them up. But thousands had been built without planning permission and property promoters were ordered by the court to demolish the homes at their own expense, despite having already sold them. Although the court would acknowledge the existence of a buyer, there was no guarantee they
would receive compensation. Among such buyers was Peter and Margaret Hegarty, whose villa near the pretty village of Cantoria, south east Spain, was razed to the ground in November last
year. They fought for almost a decade to save their home, which they had
spent 35 years saving for. The couple bought their threebedroom house in 2005 - believing it had been built legally - but were duped by the then-mayor Pedro Llamas and property developer Francisco Pedrosa. In 2012, a court found the former mayor guilty of falsifying documents and sentenced him to two years in jail, suspended because it was his first offence. He and the developer were ordered to pay compensation to the Hegartys but declared themselves bankrupt and have yet to pay a penny. At the same time, a villa belonging to neighbours Frank and Janet Doel,
also near Cantoria, was torn down. Sadly, this is not uncommon. The first British buyers to see their home demolished were Helen and Len Prior. Their villa in Vera, Almeria, was torn down in 2008. The Hegartys’ neighbours in Cantoria, John and Jan Brooks, from Taunton, Somerset, had their property flattened in 2013. Their neighbours Clive and Gillian Davies also suffered the same fate. Even those who can keep their homes may live without water and electricity because they don’t have the right documentation to connect supplies. On Tuesday, the Senate of Spain made an amendment to the law meaning those who bought their properties in good faith must be compensated before demolition. This is thanks to determined British expats who have campaigned for change for many years. AUAN is a group established by residents in Almanzora, where there are 12,697 illegal constructions alone. President Maura Hillen, originally from Weybridge, Surrey, bought a £200,000 property in Spain and retired to the country in 2007 with her husband John. They were one of the unlucky couples to be sold an illegal home, but have been able to keep their property because a prosecution in the courts failed. Speaking to MailOnline from her Albox, Andalucia, Mrs Hillen, 52, said:
‘It looks like a house, it is a house, but far as the authorities are concerned, it’s not a house. ‘We were left with paperless properties and we have been working to improve our circumstances over the years.’ ‘It’s been hugely stressful for some people - it’s broken up marriages, it hasn’t helped with people’s health,’ she added. ‘Everyone reacts differently to these circumstances, but it’s not what we came here for. ‘As a result of our campaigning we managed to get a proposal before the senate of Spain to amend the criminal code. The good thing for us is that the senate recognises the injustice.’ The amendment was passed, something Mrs Hillen describes as the ‘first positive legislation change’. However, she believes a lot more still needs to be achieved. According to AUAN, there are an estimated 300,000 illegally built homes in southern Spain. dailymail.co.uk

The study showed that the average weekly rental price in Spain during the months of February, March and April is 356 euros, compared with a price of 368 euros in April, when the Easter Holy week is celebrated this year. HomeAway also compared the differences in rental prices among the regions analysed. What’s the right outdoor heating system for you? Electric
The easiest way to heat your garden is with an electric heater – simply plug it in, flick a switch and enjoy almost instant warmth. You can choose from different types of electric heaters, ranging from floor, tabletop and wall mounted units to tall freestanding models – and some can even be used indoors in your garage or workshop. There’s an electric heater to suit all your needs, whatever your budget. Here’s a few things to consider if you’re looking at electric heaters: Look for heaters that use short wave lamps. These produce heat in the infrared band that warms the body not the air, meaning the heat won’t be disrupted by a breeze. Medium and long wave lamps warm the air itself, which makes it less easy to direct the flow of the heat. Short wave lamps typically use clear halogen, ruby red halogen or gold bulbs, while medium and long wave heaters use quartz. The higher the kw of a heater, the more warmth it will generate. Don’t forget you’ll need to have an electrical outlet nearby to plug your heater into. Firepits, firebowls and fire baskets Firepits, firebowls and fire baskets are freestanding open fireplaces, usually made from steel or cast iron, in which you burn wood. What’s great about this type of outdoor heating is that they serve several purposes – not only do they generate heat as a traditional open fire would, but you can also use them as an incinerator, and even use some models like a traditional charcoal BBQ. If you decide to buy a fire pit, bowl or basket, make sure you use untreated wood, logs and HeatBlox in them.

Chimeneas are a traditional form of outdoor heater that originated in Mexico and are usually made from clay, cast iron or steel. Most chimeneas follow the traditional design of a round lower body topped by a vertical smoke stack, and although more modern styles are available they all work in the same way: load wood into the open front, then light to create a fire. Some models are even available with cooking grills that allow them to be used as BBQs. Chimeneas are available in 2 distinct styles: Clay chimeneas come in a variety of traditional designs and bright colours. Metal chimeneas can be more expensive than clay models but they tend to last longer as they’re more robust. homebase.co.uk

The New Order
The Alquerian General Election had failed to return a candidate with an overall majority. Manuela, Alqueria’s very own anarchist and femme fatale formed a coalition government with Loco Paco, clinically insane and a dung beetle breeder. The control of the Village was now firmly in the hands of the Hill People leaving the Newcomers with only a sizeable minority in the elected chamber. Manuela became Prime Minister and Paco her deputy but with the added responsibility of cleaning Alqueria’s only public urinal. Manuela, being an anarchist resisted all authority but didn’t hold back when exerting her own. The cabinet, apart from Loco Paco consisted entirely of women, strangely all less attractive than Manuela herself. Her private secretary, Rodger Delado stood six feet three in his stockinged feet and rippled with muscles, she consulted with him long and often. Manuela is an anarchist in the true sense of the word, unfortunately the ordinary people of the Pueblo also possess anarchistic tendencies. Most previous governments only passed those laws which they knew would be obeyed. Consequently there were a mere three laws on the statute book and one of them dealt with a ban on the use of rocket propelled vehicles on every third Sunday of alternate months. Manuela was however determined to bring peace and harmony to the village or at least mould it into something that reflected her own needs and aspirations. The womenfolk of Alqueria looked forward to a new beginning and the male population started taking steroids. Rodriquez, now leading the opposition planned the
ove r t h r ow of this ‘Wanton Woman’ which is how he liked to refer to Manuela. The first and most obvious ploy would be to try an win over Loco Paco, break the coalition and force another election. But how does one win over a loony? Rodriquez decided he must share a mutual interest with Paco and to this end he ordered a gross of assorted Saharan Dung Beetles. He attempted to train them to beg, roll over and retrieve sticks but all to no avail. Training Saharan Dung Beetles requires the sort of skill and intelligence only Loco Paco and others of his ilk possess. Rodriquez erred on the side of simplicity and gave his mechanised pets the run of the house. Loco Paco would then be cordially invited to partake of a glass of wine, see the beetles and that would be the start of a beautiful friendship. What could go wrong? Paco duly arrived and announced his presence with a firm knock on the politician’s imposing front door. Rodriquez in his haste to cement the friendship rushed to the door quashing dung beetles underfoot. Paco was not impressed at the sight of the sticky yellow slime of the now defunct and pulverised scarabs. Rodriguez plotted anew?
one mans grief by Paul Martin
One to the left, two to the right, one to the left, two to the right . . . Tap – tap, tap, Tap – tap, tap . . . Need a clue? I’m talking about something which the Monty Python team would have referred to The Ministry of Silly Walks. This particular walking style may not have come under the jurisdiction of the bowler hated civil servant portrayed by John Cleese – it’s a little too conservative, I suspect – but it’s none the less of interest. Those of you who live in Spain will know all too well about the Beirut style bombardment of sky rockets which takes place at every Fiesta. It drives cats and dogs under beds, humans to distraction and it’s always a wonder to me that more people don’t get injured by the falling sticks: they’re three feet long and of robust construction. I’ve observed that the men of my town are stick carriers. This may purely be a local trait, an Andalucian one, or possibly even of national proportions. And it’s not just rocket sticks they carry. A small man regularly strides past my house with a long cane; the sort of cane my father used to hold up his French beans; it’s six feet long and at least a foot taller than him. If it were any thicker, it would be called a staff. Perhaps he see’s in the cane what he lacks in life – height. But I digress. Tap – tap, tap. Tap – tap, tap . . . A man, who’s as regular a clockwork, walks through the port every day, tapping his legs with a rocket stick as he goes. Now there are two points of interest here: firstly the metronomic tapping and secondly his walking style – one is very dependent upon the other. Imagine if you will, the pecking, short stepped, almost comic walk of Agatha Christie’s Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot - a very fussy stride from a very fussy man, and I also imagine, quite
Royal Fall From Grace The state of the nation was stable. All the factions were at peace with each other. Pete gave the orders, and I largely ignored them. The Dog was in charge of security, and happily passed comment on anything in and around the national borders at the top of her voice. We were all content, and knew our places and our duties under the beneficent rule of Her Imperial Majesty, Sayyida al Hurra, Queen of Darkness, She Who Must Not Be Questioned, a.k.a. Sid, Somebody Else’s Cat. Her day revolved around her kitten, Mr Tommy Fluffypants. She loved her kitten; she kept him safe behind the toolshed when he was tiny, she educated him in the necessary survival skills needed for a life in a land of humans and dogs, but most of all she played with him. It was heart-warming to watch mother and son playing together so joyfully, then one day everything changed. It changed on the day that the pubescent Tommy went for his Attitude Adjustment at the vets. He returned with a strategically bald bum and slightly wobbly legs, and as he staggered up to his mother for comfort her first action was to cuff him. I was astonished, and so was he. He looked up at me with such a perplexed little face that my heart went out to him in his hour of need. I imagined that perhaps it was because he smelt of vet, so I stepped in with surrogate comfort, just until she could take up the maternal reins again. But she didn’t. Every time the
hard to sustain. Now, my sky rocket stick carrier has that walk off to a tee, but the leg tapping adds a whole new dimension to it. He holds the stick in his right hand and taps once on his left leg and twice on his right . . . one the left, two to the right. For as long as I’ve lived here – four years now – I’ve plotted his tapping walk with mounting interest, why does he do it? He often calls into Bar Rafa at six for a coffee, so a few weeks ago I finally approached him and asked the big question, would he mind telling me about the stick tapping. He’s actually from Bilbao, so with a strong accent and a name which I still can’t pronounce – lots of X’s and double I’s – but his explanation was moving and touching. He and his wife of fifty years moved here six years ago to be nearer their children. Shortly after their move, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour and died within months. He took up walking as a means of getting out of the house. On the anniversary of her death and on a morning of Fiesta sky rockets, a stick fell at his feet and he picked it up, he said it was still hot. He took the stick home and subsequently on his walks and developed the tapping routine as a rhythmic way of reminding him of his dear wife. He was pleased I’d asked and we’ve since met up for a chat and a coffee. Every time I see him walk by one to the left, two to the right - I know what he’s thinking about and I know how he’s still grieving. We all have our own way and this is his.

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk poor little mite went anywhere near her she launched into him with language such as no lady, much less a royal lady, should use, and backed it up with left-rights, or right-lefts, of which any professional pugilist would have been proud. He has become nervous of her, he slinks about the house like a guilty conscience, he won’t go anywhere near her, and if she comes in, he goes out. Something has changed between them. I hoped it would resolve itself, but even a week later she still cuffs him on sight. Does she now consider him grown up and ready to leave the family home? Will the situation ever return to normal? Will their fractured relationship ever heal? I can’t stand all this strife, and advice would be welcome, please. If their relationship doesn’t improve, she will have to find herself a new kingdom somewhere else.

fresh for spring
...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES
From the markets and out of the gardens come the first sweet offerings of the season. Dig in with these delicious spring recipes.
Pea, Mint & Spring Onion Soup with Parmesan biscuits The Parmesan 'tuiles' make this soup stylish enough for entertaining - but they take just a few minutes to make Ingredients
1 tbsp olive oil knob of butter ½ bunch spring onion, sliced, plus a few extra to serve 1 potato, cut into small dice 1l hot vegetable stock 900g frozen petits pois ½ small bunch mint, leaves picked, plus a few extra to serve 85g parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), very finely grated
Method Heat the olive oil and butter in a heavy based pan. When foaming, add the spring onions and potato. Gently fry without colouring for about 5 mins. Stir in the stock, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 mins or until the potato is tender. Stir in the peas, bring to the boil again, then cook for about 3 mins until they are just done. Remove the pan from the heat, add the mint leaves and whizz in a blender or food processor until smooth. To make the Parmesan biscuits, heat the grill to high. Line a baking sheet with baking parchment and divide the grated Parmesan into 6 long strips. Grill for 1 min or until the cheese has melted and is lightly golden. While still warm and a bit flexible, release the biscuits from the baking parchment with a palette or cutlery knife, then cool until firm. To serve, heat the soup and divide between 6 bowls. Scatter with mint and sliced spring onions, if you like, and serve with the Parmesan biscuits on the side.
Spring vegetable tagliatelle with lemon & chive sauce Ingredients
450g mixed spring vegetables such as green beans, asparagus, broad beans and peas 400g tagliatelle 1 lemon 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp snipped chives grated parmesan (or vegetarian alternative), to serve
Method Halve the green beans and cut the asparagus into 3 pieces on the diagonal. Cook the tagliatelle, adding the vegetables for the final 5 mins of the cooking time. Meanwhile, grate the zest from half the lemon and squeeze the juice from the whole lemon. Put juice in a small pan with the mustard, olive oil and a little black pepper. Warm through until smooth. Drain the pasta and veg, adding 4 tbsp of the water to the lemon sauce. Return the pasta to the pan, reheat the sauce, adding most of the chives, then add to the pasta, tossing everything together well. Divide between 4 shallow bowls and top each with black pepper, Parmesan and the remaining chives.

With winter overstaying its welcome this year, it’s likely rich soups, stews, pastas and feel-good desserts have become home menu staples. “We tend to hibernate and sometimes stock up on processed foods to comfort ourselves from the cold,” says Gina Sunderland, a Winnipeg-based registered dietitian. Forget cleaning out closets and scrubbing floors to welcome spring. Instead, start by cleaning up your eating habits. Here’s a seven-step plan to get you started. h t t p : // w w w . besthealthmag.ca/
Revisit your portionse “Get control of your calories to help manag the extra winter weight you might have put on,” suggests Sunderland. Doing so helps counteract that mindless munching habit you may have slipped into over the chilly months. So put portion control back in play.
Clean out your cupboards & fridge
Go through and toss any expired and processed foods to organize your fridge and cupboards for healthier eating. Think about the rule of five. Check the labels on items in your pantry—cookies, crac kers and chips and so forth. If there are more than five grams of fat on the labe l, it’s a good package to toss. After toss ing heavy sauces, dips and snacks, replace them with bowls of fruit, pre-cut veggies, plai n yogurt for smoothies and dips and lighter salad dressings

One-pan salmon with roast asparagus For an easy side dish to complement a spring roast, just cook this recipe without the salmon
Passion fruit cream Ingredients
Ingredients
400g new potatoes, halved if large 2 tbsp olive oil 8 asparagus spears, trimmed and halved 2 handfuls cherry tomatoes 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 salmon fillets, about 140g/5oz each handful basil leaves
Method Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. Tip the potatoes and 1 tbsp of olive oil into an ovenproof dish, then roast the potatoes for 20 mins until starting to brown. Toss the asparagus in with the potatoes, then return to the oven for 15 mins. Throw in the cherry tomatoes and vinegar and nestle the salmon amongst the vegetables. Drizzle with the remaining oil and return to the oven for a final 10-15 mins until the salmon is cooked. Scatter over the basil leaves and serve everything scooped straight from the dish.
Slash your salt & sugar
“White sugar is an instant hit to your body and is linked to diabetes, inflammation, decreased immune response, liver fatigue and some cancers,” “And cutting back on your salt lowers the risk of heart disease, since salt stiffens the arteries and makes them rigid.”
Add probiotics
“Probiotics help with digestive hea lth, so add in yogurt or a yogurt drink dail y”. It can also help if you’ve been figh ting colds and flus throughout the win ter. “Many of us have had some antibiot ics because we’ve been sick, so add ing a probiotic helps rebalance the gutfriendly bacteria.” Also skip the supplement s and opt to get your probiotics from food sources if you can. “Research sho ws that getting probiotics from food is better used by the body.”
Switch up your produce
Tired of apples, bananas and root vegetables? “There are some nice spring produce choices coming out,” says Sunderland. “Some things we see are asparagus, fiddleheads, mushrooms and berries.” Other brightly-coloured produce making more of an appearance at our grocery stores or farmer’s markets include apricots, green beans, broccoli and more. “The more colourful the fruit or vegetable, the more vitamins and minerals it has.”
1 egg yolk 2 tbsp caster sugar 1 tbsp Cointreau or triple sec, plus some to serve squeeze lemon juice 3 passion fruits 150ml double cream
Method Whisk the yolk and sugar until light and fluffy and doubled in size, about 3 mins. Beat in the Cointreau, lemon and the flesh of 2 passion fruits. Softly whip the cream until it just holds some shape (it stiffens quickly towards the end so whip slowly as it gets thicker). Chill 2 dessert glasses. To assemble, gently fold the egg mix into the double cream, having first given the eggs another brisk whisk. Spoon the cream into little glasses and top them with the seeds from the remaining passion fruit and a drizzle of Cointreau.

Gold set to drop further Gold prices are set to drop next week with the US dollar expected to log gains ahead of the release of the US central bank’s monetary policy statement on 18 March. The US Federal Reserve’s FOMC statement could provide hints as to when the central bank will raise interest rates this year. A stronger dollar is bad for gold as it makes the yellow metal more expensive for holders of other currencies, while higher interest rates typically dent the demand for assets that do not pay interest such as gold. Asian demand Traders will also be tracking gold demand across Asia, with Indian demand likely to pick up pace ahead of the April festival and wedding seasons. India is the leading bullion consumer in the world.

Edward Meir, commodity consultant with INTL FCStone, said the first Fed rate hike, which he expects in June, should mark the end of the US dollar rally. He said that should provide some much needed momentum for the precious metal.
Mier said in the near-term he expects gold prices to test initial support at $1,140 and did not rule out a drop to $1,130, the N ove m b e r 2014 low – which some analysts Repairs to Washers, Dryers, h a v e Electric Cookers, Dishwashers, dubbed the “line in the Fridges and Freezers sand”.

However, the eventual rise in interest rates will check any rally in gold next week, he added. Stoeferle remains bearish on gold in the near-term and said gold will not look like an attractive investment until global inflation pressures start to pick up. Victor Thianpiriya, commodity strategist at ANZ bank said while futures were holding around $1,150 an ounce, he expects that level to break and eventually fall to $1,100 an ounce. Mier said: “I think the Fed needs to move sooner rather than later. Until we get over that first rate hike, gold doesn’t look so good.” “Right now there is no bullish narrative for gold. I think we need some sort of global economic shock or credit event to create some momentum for gold.” Thianpiriya said: “I think we are destined to go lower. It’s certainly going to be a bumpy ride, and the 1150 level is putting up some resistance right now but I think it breaks. “I think gold’s failure to hold the gains in the early part of the year - the price was $1,300 an ounce just 2 months ago - has dented confidence in the short term.” ibtimes.co.uk

Now that we are officially a couple of months into the green, refreshing spring season, it is about that time of year that we begin opening our windows to let the cool breeze inside of our homes and we begin to spend more and more quality time outside with our friends and our family―and especially our pets. After being cooped up inside all winter long, without so much as a lake to swim in or a green patch of grass to roll around in, you can bet that your pets are just as ready to bid farewell to the cool winter weather and soak up the smells and sights of the season as you are.
Whether you have a dog who enjoys long walks around the neighborhood after work, or your cat can’t get enough of the chirping birds outside of the window, the spring season is a special time for every type of pet. However, just as we humans prepare ourselves for spring by cleaning out or homes or protecting ourselves from the onset of itchy spring allergies, there are certain precautionary measures that we must take during this time of year to protect our pets from the dangers that come with the changing of the seasons. To help your furry friend get the most of the spring weather and remain happy and healthy all season

Book Review Learn With Alex and Anna by Peter Hayward And now for a complete change… children’s books for your child or grandchild. This was my area of expertise when I was in educational management and conducting some post-grad research into reading so it is an area I am more than happy to promote. “Each story is written around a basis of positive family, personal and social values,” didactic in nature. Series 1 will consist of 20 books, 9 of which have already been published. Peter Hayward covers a wide range of themes: train journeys, rain molecules, road safety, acorns, seat belts and a plethora of other relevant subjects. All of them are wellillustrated with the added bonus of primary colours so the reds, blues and yellows are appealing for the young readers. “With the aid of significant people helping them on their life’s journey, Alex and Anna are duly taught educational subjects whilst learning important life skills in a fun and friendly way.” Alex the Superhero: Grandpa arrives just before the imminent birth of Anna to do some DIY dressed in his extra large shirt which he believes is the suitable attire for a superhero. pause for thought
When I first became licensed as a Reader in the Diocese of Blackburn, a close friend, who knew me better than most, raised the proverbial eyebrow at the thought that someone who liked to enjoy life to the full, and was (expressing it fairly politely) not without some faults, should become involved with the Church. In response I tried to explain that Jesus came to earth for sinners, and that I therefore was fully qualified. That if God was prepared to forgive me, then no one else should feel excluded. But of course, although God does indeed call sinners, the Bible reminds us that He calls us to repentance; to try by His grace to overcome the many temptations we face. And it’s an unfortunate fact that it often seems that the closer we get to God, the worse the temptations seem to become. The Bible tells us that Jesus Himself was tempted in every way as we are, but remained without sin (Heb 5 v 15), which confirms that temptation of itself isn’t wrong, it’s the enjoying of that temptation, or the giving in to it that’s wrong. And so it is that now in the season known as Lent, many Christians remember
the Temptations of Jesus, recorded in the Gospels as he spent 40 days in the wilderness being tempted by the Devil; using this as a means to examine their own lives. For some, this takes the form of fasting, or giving up sweets, cigarettes or other things they enjoy. For others, this can involve giving up time for Bible Reading or Prayer; or even, dare I suggest it, for actually going to Church. But however we respond to the challenge of Lent, I would suggest we could all benefit from a little honest self-appraisal, responding to God’s call to repentance in the certain knowledge that He is able to forgive our past failures and give resolve for the future. Indoor Gardening: It’s Time For a Houseplant Makeover Katie Rushworth, reveals how to avoid pot plant disasters
Apparently I need an aspidistra. I am still reeling from the sudden death of my cactus.
It looked dry, so I watered it a bit. Then a bit more. Then one day it shrivelled horribly and collapsed in on itself like a deflated lung. “You over-watered it,” says the gardener and star of ITV’s Love Your Garden, Katie Rushworth. Katie has come round to give me a houseplant makeover. “Too much love – it’s the houseplant owner’s classic mistake. After neglecting them entirely, that is.”

I have a small collection of house plants: a raggedy, lopsided aloe; a big gangly rubber plant; and a dwindling cactus family, now down to two trembling survivors. Katie says she can help, and begins to plot three designs for three different rooms – starting with the hardiest of houseplants, the aspidistra, aka “the cast iron plant”. 1. An invincible garden for my desk George Orwell may have written off the aspidistra as fatally suburban but, says Katie, they are the chilled-out housemate of the plant
world – relaxed about temperature, watering and area. My attic office room is hot and dry in summer, but cold in winter, so I need plants that can cope with temperature change. “The golden pothos is another tough all-rounder that anyone can grow,” says Katie. On to the shopping list it goes. To help the aspidistra shake off its frumpy image, Katie suggests potting it in a modern tin. I choose an old oil can that I get from a restaurant. I team it with a cordyline, a philodendron, an ivy, a cactus and a succulent, also potted in colourful containers. I’m convinced it will encourage me to spend more time at my desk. 2. Macramé hanging baskets are the second outmoded trend that Katie is determined to revive, and she says it will add interest to the corner of my sitting room. She picks a Boston fern for the macramé, as they “are one of the best houseplants for removing unpleasant chemicals like formaldehyde from the air”. I attach the macramé to the ceiling using wall plugs, screws and a hook and chain. 3. A stepladder of succulents Katie gives a quick diagnosis to my sad aloe. “He’s outgrown his pot,” she says, showing me the tangle of roots escaping through the bottom. He’s also lopsided, and Katie advises me to right him when I move him into his new home. We decide I can use an old stepladder for display and that I should organise the aloe with other types of succulents. I choose a colourful pot from Habitat and some vintage terracotta pots from eBay. “Always group plants in threes and fives,” Katie tells me. “It is the gardener’s oldest trick.” The makeover is complete, the house transformed. I promise Katie I will wipe the dust off the plants’ leaves every couple of weeks, mist them regularly with a sprayer – and try not to kill them with kindness. theguardian.com Established 40 years in the UK

23 players turned out to play this Championship course and for the Silver category it turned out to be just that! No player managed to reach 30 points, Our field is always divided equally into 2 categories by handicap, so the players with midteens handicap can find themselves in Gold or Silver, depending on who plays on that particular day, in this case one of our Norwegian members came in disappointed that he had played in the “Silver” category, that was until he found out that he had won the category with just 29 points. Local member Gerd Cromm also had handicap issues, stating that the German Federation had given him a shot back due to severe injuries
to his ankle. Well it’s just as well that the handicap secretary didn’t have time to change his handicap, because it would have come straight back down after he returned the best score of the day with 40 points ! Full results: Gold category 1st G.Cromm, 40 points; 2nd N. Spaniol 34 points and 3rd C. Grey 34 points. Silver category: 1st Sverre Sonesen 29 pts. 2nd Alex Goslan 27 pts. 3rd Per Skarnes 26 pts. TMGS Match Report
Forty golfers turned up on a very bright and sunny morning to find the course in very good condition and it is so apparent that the new Greenkeeper has grabbed this course by the balls and sorting it out. Surprisingly, even though we were 40 strong, it didn’t take too long to get round in a decent time. Only 3 players either achieved or bettered their handicaps and one will be “enjoying” a very nice cut to his handicap. The Two’s Pot was a very healthy 27€ and only one member achieved a 2 and this was Norbert Spaniol at the 13th. Three of the NTP’s were claimed and the recipients of a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels were guest Ulf Berthag, Joe Dean and Les Wilton. Ulf also won the Best Guest award with 33 points, one point ahead of our German guest Ludwig Mutter on 32 points. The Silver Division was a fairly tight affair and Les Wilton’s 30 points was enough for 4th spot. We had two tying on 31 points and Alan Rickers took
the runner-up slot due to the “lower handicap” system we now employ. This meant Alex Goslan came in 3rd. However, a long way in front was Sverre Sonesen with a nice 36 points. The Gold crew didn’t really score much better and it only needed 32 points for Dag Lovas and Andy Mills to take 4th and 3rd. Gerd Cromm’s 36 points was only enough for second spot as Norbert Spaniol’s very tasty 41 points took the spoils and top score of the day. Enjoy your new handicap Norbert! Limebar Golf Society Los Altos
The golf societies venue for the 11th March 2015 was held at El Valle Golf Course. Eighteen members played off on a warm fine day. The course was in good condition and played well, however for some strange reason the scores did not reflect this. Nearest the pin on the 9th hole (par 3) was Ken Sutton. Nearest the pin in 2 on the 10th hole (par 4) was John Mc Gregor. Nearest the pin on the 12th hole (par 3) was Paul Abbot. Nearest the pin on the 15th hole (par 3) was Les Thwaites. Bronze Class in 2nd place was Nev. Greenwood with 21 points. Bronze Class in 1st place was Barry
Shawyer with 24 points Silver Class 2nd place was Steve Cottle with a score of 28 points. Silver Class 1st place was Brian Archer with a score of 30 points. Gold Class 2nd place was John Mc Gregor with a score of 16 points Gold Class 1st place was Mike Heighway a score of 17 points. A very good day of golf in pleasant company, with thanks to the committee for organising the event and the bar staff for providing the meal.

ROJALES NETBALL CLUB
It has been a busy start to 2015 for Rojales NC. Firstly, in early February, they travelled up to Valencia to compete against teams from Madrid and Valencia. They played some outstanding netball with excellent results right up until the final game when they were pipped to the winner's podium by Madrid A in an 11-8 thriller. So far this month they have played against Murcia and both Rojales A and B teams were victorious. And last Sunday they travelled down to La Manga to take on a newly formed team. Rojales pressured La Manga throughout the game and came away with an empathetic win of 52-11. There's still more to come as Rojales will be travelling to Madrid in May when they will be looking for revenge for their earlier defeat; and then on 20 June they will be
playing host to the other Spanish Clubs in what should be a very competitive end of season tournament. If you are interested in playing netball come along to the Norwegian School in Quesada on a Tuesday from 7pm8.30pm or for further details call Tracey on 679539995. Rojales Netball Club would like to thank Rojales Town Hall for their continued support. Team kits sponsored by Lyndyloo in Spain Bridal wear in La Zenia. www.lyndylooinspain.com
Ten Pin Bowling League their recent fine form against Los Lobos,
With Lesley Day sweeping the Ladies high scores for the night, Med Bistro & Bar El Raso moved back to the top of the league, with a hard fought 6 - 2 win over Lucky Strike. This was because Team Finland suffered their first lose in 14 matches 2 - 6, at the hands of Mixers. Bob Califice of Ms found his form and, with a mens high scratch series of 577 on the night, secured a convincing 129 pins overall win. Having lost the first game by 43 pins, Split Happens bounced back to take games two and three against Belgas Torrevieja 2 but, it was not enough to snatch the overall pinfall and, they had to settle for a 4 - 4 draw. Juan's Warriors Sam Kearn helped his team take the first game against Right Move Insurance, with his seasons highest scratch game of 194, making a 238 with handicap. However, RMI rallied and took games two and three, completing a 6 -–2 victory, leaving JW 4 points adrift at the bottom of the league. Caballo Negro took on Crazy Pinz, looking to overtake them with a win. CN had Seppo Tuominen taking the men's high game scr and h/c with 214 and 241 and, the high series h/c on the night, with his seasons high of 657. As the team was consistent throughout the three games, CN also took the men's high series scr and h/c with 1590 and 1812 respectively. This led to a comfortable 6 - 2 win and, moves them above CP in the league. Splash continued
taking all 8 points and moving themselves a little nearer to the top two. However, with this current lose, LL are now only 4 points above Juans' Warriors, at the bottom of the league. The Dreamers got off to the best possible start against Los Bandidos, taking the first game by 10 pins. But with two 600+ games, LB rallied to take the match 6 - 2. The draw for the semi-finals of the Splash sponsored league cup took place before bowling started and, the following matches will take place on the 24th March. Split Happens will play Team Finland and, Med Bistro & Bar El Raso will take on Los Bandidos, for the right to contest the final, which will take place on the league night of the 21st April.
