Relief as Russian cargo ship docks at space station
An unmanned Russian cargo ship successfully docked with the International Space Station on Sunday following a string of failed attempts to resupply the orbital laboratory. “The transport cargo ship Progress M-28M has docked with the... Russian segment of the ISS at 10:11am Moscow time (0711 GMT),” the Russian federal space agency (Roscosmos) said in a statement. The ship is carrying more than 2,300 kilos of oxygen, fuel, food, and scientific equipment, as well as personal packages for the international crew of three. Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Mikhail Kornienko and US astronaut Scott Kelly are part of Expedition 44 currently in space, to be joined by three more people later this month. Commander Padalka is scheduled to
return to Earth in November while Kornienko and Kelly are part of a yearlong mission and will not go home until next March. The Russian crew members oversaw the automatic docking of the Progress, which arrived after circling Earth 34 times following its launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on July 3. “Congratulations guys, your cargo ship has arrived,” Padalka could be heard telling ground control after contact was complete with the ship, which came in “perfect shape” according to NASA. The Progress will remain docked to the ISS for four months getting filled with trash and discarded gear before it journeys back to Earth, burning up on re-entry over the Pacific Ocean. AFP

Leftist Spanish parties back ‘No’ vote in Greek referendum Six Spanish leftist parties and platforms on Friday backed a “No” vote in Sunday’s Greek referendum on its bailout terms. “We think that the Greek people will be courageous, that they will be on the ‘No’ side,” said Rommy Arce, a Madrid city councillor who belongs to a leftist “Ahora Madrid” citizens platform that took power in the capital last month. Voting “No” to the latest bailout terms offered to Greece by the IMF and the European Union “is a rejection of all the governments that apply these policies on the rest of Europe,” she added. “Ahora Madrid” is made up partly of Spain’s anti-

austerity “Indignado” protest movement that staged occupations in city squares across the country. It was backed during local elections in May by Spain’s new radical, anti-austerity party Podemos, a close ally of Greece’s ruling Syriza party. “The fundamental dilemma is between democracy and austericide,” said Jaime Pastor, a member of Podemos. “Our future will depend on what will happen in Greece,” he added. history. Spain grew by 1.4 percent last year, its first full year of growth since a property bubble burst in 2008, throwing millions of people out of work. But its jobless rate remains at 23.78 percent in the first quarter, the highest rate in the eurozone after Greece’s which stood at 25.6 percent in March. “I don’t have the slightest doubt that if Spain backtracks on reforms... we could see a very fast drop in economic growth,” Economy Minister Luis de Guindos told a news conference following a weekly cabinet meeting. If the “Yes” side wins Sunday’s referendum in Greece “it will be much more simple, easy and viable,” he added. The minister also called Greece’s decision to call the referendum “nonsense” and “a mistake” and said its effect on European leaders had been like a “cold shower”. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Tuesday said that a “Yes” vote in the referendum would be good for Greece as it would allow its creditors to negotiate with a new government in Athens. Rallies in support of a “No” vote in the referendum are planned for Madrid and Barcelona over the weekend. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has said a “No” result in Sunday’s referendum would strengthen his hand and force international creditors withholding bailout funds to drop “humiliating” austerity terms. But European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker warned that Greece’s negotiating position with creditors would be “dramatically weakened” in the event of a “No” vote. Irish singer Val Doonican dies aged 88 Doonican, who grew up in Waterford on the southeast coast of Ireland, was the star of his own show on the BBC from 1965 to 1986, featuring his own performances and those of guest artists.

He had started writing music from an early age and had been touring as part of various groups with limited success until in 1963 he appeared on Britain’s main variety TV program of the day, “Sunday Night at the London Palladium”. That one eight-minute spot transformed his fortunes, prompting Doonican to say many times that he had become “an overnight success after 17 years.” His jumpers became his trademark along with the rocking chair from which he often performed and his show launched numerous artists’ careers including that of Irish comedian Dave Allen. Doonican stopped performing in 2009 after over 60 years in showbusiness. He was a keen golfer and watercolour painter. In June 2011 he was recognized by the Mayor of Waterford and bestowed the Freedom of the City of his home town. Gibraltar fury as Spain flouts minute’s silence
Gibraltar´s Government reacted with fury last night after Spain deliberately flouted Friday’s silent tribute to the 30 British tourists massacred in Tunisia by illegally sending a Spanish ship into sovereign waters. The “shocking and disgusting” act of aggression led to Andrew Rosingdell MP to call for Gibraltar to have its own MP in Westminster, saying it was “the only way Gibraltar would ever have its voice heard above Foreign Office floundering.” Royal Navy and Royal Gibraltar Police patrols were scrambled on Friday after the Spanish survey vessel Angeles Alvarino entered British waters and began dropping scientific probes into the sea. The officers should have been taking part in memorial events organised in Gibraltar, or respecting the minute’s silence on their vessels. The three-hour scuffle came to a head when Spanish crewmembers dropped a probe on to the Royal Navy launch which could have injured a member of its crew. Friday’s incident marked the 173rd time that Spanish vessels had illegally

CALAIS CHAOS: 150 MIGRANTS TRY TO STORM CHANNEL TUNNEL
Dozens of migrants trying to stow away on vehicles crossing the Channel by tunnel between France and England broke through perimeter fences at Calais overnight, temporarily halting traffic, a Eurotunnel spokesman said on Saturday. The disruption was the latest in a series of incidents involving some 3,000 migrants, mostly from Africa and the Middle East, who are camped around the northern French port in the hope of reaching Britain. “At around 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) on Friday there were migrants all around the perimeter trying to break through the fences,” the Eurotunnel spokesman told reporters. “There was a lot of disruption.” Both freight and passenger services were temporarily halted during the night but are now running normally, although with some delays due to the backlog, he added. E u r o s t a r , which also runs passenger trains through the tunnel, though not at night, said its services had not been affected. Over the past month, the growing numbers
of migrants at Calais have also been trying to take advantage of a series of strikes by port workers that have caused long lines of trucks to build up on the approach roads to the port. Calais is one of the front lines in a wider immigration crisis in which European countries are struggling to agree among themselves how to deal with growing numbers of migrants fleeing conflict or poverty. Many want to get to Britain because they speak English, have family connections or are convinced they stand a better chance of getting a job there. ‘WOODY’ PACKS THEM IN FOR THE ALZHEIMERS ASSOCIATION
Once again, a fantastic night of entertainment and generosity at Restaurant El Alto La Dolores. Woody delighted guests, who filled the dance floor from the very first song. A very accomplished singer/ guitarist he helped attract 184 people to the latest Charity Fundraising night at El Alto La Dolores. The Restaurant owners donated another Mediterranean Cruise, as 1st prize in the raffle, and altogether the fantastic sum of 1,366 euros was raised for The Alzheimers Association.
Matilda Sanchez, from AFA was overwhelmed at the number of
people present, and their generosity. She thanked them, and explained what AFA does, and how important donations are for them. Woody will be back at El Alto La Dolores, in Guardamar, on 5th August, when the Restaurant and it’s organisers will be raising funds for The Children’s Care Home in Elche. Tickets are available from the Restaurant, Post Room Benijofar, or The Card Place in Benimar. 10 euros buys you a good 2 course meal and the best in entertainment, and tickets do sell out very quickly.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) believes that children's activity and play need to be as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible. “Summer is a great time for children to get out and experience the world around them,” says David Walker, head of leisure safety at RoSPA. "During the summer months, we see a rise in injuries associated with play and leisure activities. You need to be aware of safely issues, but this isn't a reason to stop children enjoying activities. In many cases, simple steps can be taken to avoid injury." New environments If you go to stay with friends or relatives, their home or garden might not be as child-friendly as your home. Children like to explore new surroundings, so make sure they don't go far on their own. Ask your hosts to place medicines and cleaning products out of sight and out of reach. Make sure you also check features such as ponds, barbecues and garden tools. A few simple steps, such as nominating an adult to watch the children at a party, can reduce the risks. Be safe around water "Water fascinates young kids," says David. "It's great fun and great exercise, but any of us can drown.
"Between 5 and 10 children a year drown in garden ponds," says David. "If you've got a toddler, the best thing to do is fill the pond in with sand to make a sand pit. Otherwise, cover the pond with a substantial grille, or put a fence around it." Open water Older children, especially teenagers, are most at risk from features near to homes such as rivers, lakes, flooded quarries and coastal water near to the shore. Having an early conversation with teens about the risks of colder, open water is important. Even the strongest swimmer can be affected by cold water shock, which affects your ability to control breathing. This can lead to gasping, panic and – in the worst cases – drowning. Cold water shock can start in water of 15C – the average temperature of the sea around Britain is 12C. Choosing to swim at a lifeguarded beach or lido is the safest option. Get in slowly, choose shallow spots, and if you're at the beach, check for dangerous currents and tides. Always follow local safety advice if you are going into

This included four at the beach or coast, and five in the bath. Among the 16-19 age group, 24 people drowned, at sites including beaches, rivers, canals and lakes. Ponds Younger children between two and six years old are particularly vulnerable to drowning in features such as ponds or small water containers.

The brilliant Nikola Tesla Tesla was born in 1856 in what’s now Croatia; aged 14 he was so gifted that he’d work out complex sums in his head and his teachers suspected him of cheating. He went on to finish the 4 year course in just 3. He was then bedridden for 9 months with cholera ran away afterwards to avoid army conscription. At Polytechnic in Vienna his claim that he studied from 3am to 11pm is probably true as he admitted in later years to never having more than 2 hours sleep a night. He excelled in his first year though his family were warned he would die from overwork. Then he argued with his tutors and got addicted to gambling, losing then winning back his allowance and tuition fees. By exam time he hadn’t studied, was refused an extension and left without graduating. In 1882 Tesla started work for the Edison Company in France, a few years later when relocating to New York his money was stolen and he arrived penniless. He started work for Thomas Edison who allegedly offered him $50,000 if he could fix all the problems with his DC motor system. Of course Tesla did exactly that yet when he asked for the reward he was told it was just ‘American humour.’ Tesla resigned and set up his own company in 1886. Tesla favoured AC motors yet his investors

It is a serious business venture, people were charged a Euro for a plot. Unsurprisingly, eBay, where it is being offered, have refused to continue selling it on their site. No, I can’t think why that’s happened either! But as is often the case, this piece of news triggered my curiosity and I couldn’t resist doing a bit of digging to find other things selling on the internet that you wouldn’t normally find on the shelves at your favourite shop. If buying a star isn’t your thing, how about paying for someone to stand in a queue for you? You can do that too! The drawback is that this is only available if you live in the Washington area of America. If you do, then you can pay someone to stand for hours in a queue for you while you relax nearby having a coffee, then they’ll contact you when the front is in sight. Very civilized! Or maybe you might fancy buying a country? New Zealand is well known for a number of reasons. The only ones I can readily recall at the moment are that “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” were shot there, they’ve got quite a good rugby team, and the Silver Ferns are a nifty netball team too. Well, you’ll be kicking yourself, because you could have taken the chance to buy it when it was for sale in 2006. Someone had even offered 3000 dollars for it, before the sale was removed by eBay. Within a year he had perfected his own AC motor, selling the system in 1888 to Westinghouse for $60,000, plus a $2000 a month (nowadays equal to $60K) consultancy position and future royalties on the electricity his motors produced. This was the time of the ‘War of Currents’ which pitted Edison against Westinghouse to decide whether AC or DC would be the future power supply for America and the world. As the stakes were so high Tesla was able to negotiate this almost extortionate price as his was the first commercially available AC motor. Within a few years Edison was broke; by 1897 Westinghouse had paid out over $200,000 in royalties and was close to bankruptcy, so a negotiated final payment to Tesla of $216,000 (about $6m nowadays) bought out the royalty clause on Tesla’s patents they were using. In 1899 Tesla moved to Colorado Springs and set up a laboratory for his high voltage experiments. He created artificial lightning which was so powerful that its thunder was heard 15 miles away, light bulbs glowed even when turned off and sparks flew between the earth and peoples feet as they walked. The town’s generator six miles away
burnt out. Tesla was way ahead of his time; he experimented with radio, radar, wireless power a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) aircraft, even a Death Ray. One year before the X-Ray was officially discovered Tesler took the first ever X-Ray picture when trying to photograph the hand of his friend Mark Twain. Tesla even built a radio controlled boat which the audience were convinced had a trained monkey inside steering it. Like the Death Ray before, he tried to sell the design for use in torpedoes to the American military without success. Tesla chose to live in hotels, dining alone at precise hours, he had friends amongst his contempories yet seemingly never had relationships with women. Tesla was a brilliant man and was awarded about 300 patents in his lifetime yet he died alone and penniless in 1943. The American Government immediately ransacked his lodgings and seized his possessions to protect his work from falling into the wrong hands.

Planning a holiday in Greece? Here’s what you need to know More than a million British holidaymakers will be heading to Greece this summer, and as the crisis unfolds many will naturally be feeling nervous about how it could affect them. Greek banks are shut and there are restrictions on how much Greeks can withdraw from banks known as capital controls. But tourists' credit and bank cards issued abroad can be used at functioning cash machines freely subject to queues and the amount of cash in them. Here is the latest advice from travel experts. How much cash should I bring? Travel advice from the Foreign Office says that while banks are closed in Greece, tourists should make sure they take sufficient euros in cash "to cover the
duration of your stay, emergencies, unforeseen circumstances and any unexpected delays". "You should take appropriate security precautions against theft. There are currently no restrictions on taking unspent euros out of Greece at the end of your stay," it adds. Andrew Brown, from Post Office Travel Money, says couples spend an average of around £500 in cash on a fortnight's holiday - on things like meals out, local trips and coffees. For a family, that figure is £700. That does not include accommodation, and the advice is to contact your hotel, internet booking company or villa owner beforehand, to see whether it is possible to pay in advance in sterling. Once there, visitors are advised to use safes
and deposit boxes to store cash, and to split money between family members. The Foreign Office also updated its travel advice following the recent vote rejecting the terms of an international bailout, saying that "the outcome of this referendum may lead to an increase in demonstrations across the country". Is this cash covered by travel insurance? The insurance group, Aviva, has doubled the cover for stolen money for people travelling to Greece having bought its travel insurance. The standard amount of lost cash covered goes up to £600 from £300 per adult, so a couple would have £1,200 of cash protected. The insurer said it wanted customers who were carrying more cash

to Greece to be confident that they were covered if the money were lost or stolen. Other insurers have followed suit, adding to the cash protection available but stressing the need for travellers to take care of their cash. Travel association Abta has updated its advice, saying: "Holidaymakers should check how much cash their travel insurance policy covers them for and should take appropriate security precautions against theft such as using their hotel safe or splitting cash up between their party." Will I be able to use credit or debit cards in restaurants and shops? If so, will there be a limit on how much I can spend? Will tavernas take plastic? The new limits on withdrawals from ATMs by those with Greek bank accounts do not apply to tourists, but there is concern that cash machines will be empty. All cards currently accepted, such as MasterCard and Visa, will continue to work as normal. Previous experience suggests that smaller shops and restaurants may be reluctant to accept credit and debit cards, preferring customers to pay in cash instead. That is because they might find it difficult to get hold of cash from their own accounts. What about my car rental? There have been reports of car rental providers asking for cash, rather than vouchers, although this has not been confirmed by the companies. As with accommodation, it may be a good idea to check in advance. Will the ATMs have enough money in them? It depends on where you are, but it is certainly a risk. As a general rule, ATMs are more likely to run out of cash on the Greek islands than on the mainland. Cash is king in Greece Will I be able to use pre-paid currency cards or travellers' cheques? Currency cards can be loaded with a foreign currency at a pre-agreed
e x c h a n g e rate and used in shops or at ATMs whilst abroad without incurring commissions or transaction fees. Again, smaller shops might start to be reluctant to take them, although they are still fully functioning. Travellers' cheques are not widely accepted so it would not be advisable to rely on them as the only source of payment. Western Union, the world's largest money transfer company, is closed for business in Greece but transfers can be made into the country. If Greece were to leave the eurozone, how long would euros be valid for? Post Office Travel Money's Andrew Brown says holidaymakers should not panic if Greece leaves the eurozone. If this happened, it would take around 18 months for the Greek drachma to be re-introduced, during which time the euro would continue to be the legal currency. A Visa spokesman added: "While there are some issues that would be outside Visa's control, we would work with all relevant parties to help ensure a swift transition to a new currency with the minimum possible disruption to consumers and retailers." Will my insurance policy cover my losses if
I decide to cancel? The advice from the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is always to check the latest Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice. An ABI spokesperson said: "Those who have their summer holidays planned in Greece remain covered by their travel insurance, in line with the terms and conditions." She said that would only change if the FCO changed its stance and decided to advise against all travel. In that case, travellers would not be covered if they still decided to go, but they would be entitled to a refund, either from their travel agent or tour operator, or their insurance company. The good news is that Greece continues to be a great bet for bargain hunters, according to the latest Post Office Travel Money resort research. The strength of sterling means families changing £500 into euros will get the equivalent of £65 more to spend compared with a year ago. Prices in resort islands such as Crete and Corfu are down by more than 13% this year anyway which means a meal in Crete with drinks will be almost £6 cheaper, and a bottle of suncream will be £3.32 less than it was last year. The price of holidays in Greece has also dropped.

AT LAST SIGNS OF ACTIVITY Housing development activity is showing signs of improvement, according to Spain’s Ministry of Public Works, which announced last week that the number of building permits granted for residential new construction in Spain reached a total of 15,178 at the end of the first four months of 2015, representing an increase of 29.9% compared to the same period of 2014, when a total of 11,680 permits were authorised. Of the total number of licences granted between January and April, some 10,898 were for apartment blocks (with a year-on-year increase of 38.6%) and 4,269 were for individual family homes, with an annual increase of 12%.
In addition, El Mundo reported that permit applications were made for 11 other buildings not intended for family dwellings, which is two more than in 2014. This significant four-monthly increase comes after permits for new builds ended a run of seven consecutive years of negative figures in 2014, rising by 1.7% to a total of 34,873 permits. The Young and Retired Opt to Rent Data from a recent study carried out by the real estate rental management franchise, Arrentum, on the ‘Desire of the Residential Consumer in Spain’, reveals that the choice of renting a home is increasing among mainly young people and retirees. According to the study, 41.7% of those surveyed aged between 18 and 30 years of age prefer to rent, either in a shared flat or an individual one. This trend is reduced in the age group between 30 and 45 years old, where they are more inclined towards owning their own property rather than leasing: 69% versus 27.4%. El Mundo reported that, in the older age groups, renting a home as the primary choice increases along with the age (with 44.5% of the respondents between 55 to 65 years of age choos-

International Tourists’ Spending up 8.4% to May
International tourists visiting Spain spent a record 21,809 million euros in the first five months of the year, which is an increase of 8.4% compared to the same period in 2014.
The average daily expenditure rose by 4.4%, to 116 euros, and the average expenditure per tourist increased by 3.1%, to 968 euros, according to the Egatur tourist expenditure survey statistics published on the Spanish Government website, La Moncloa, by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. In May, tourism spending by international visitors reached 5,890 million euros (+11.8%), due to the number of tourists increasing by 6.8%. The average expenditure per tourist was 905 euros (+4.7%), with average daily expenditure of 114 euros (+4.6%). Tourists from the United Kingdom spent most in Spain from January to May, with their spending increasing by 10.8%, to 4,217 million euros, equivalent to 19.3% of the total tourist expenditure. The average expenditure per tourist was 853 euros (+7.3%), with an average daily spend of 102 euros (+12.5%). El Economista reported that, from the German market, tourists spent 3,427 million euros (+1.6%) and accounted for 15.7% of the total expenditure in the period, while French tourists spent 2,224 million euros (+16.5%, the second largest increase), and Scandinavian visitors spent 2,202 millon euros (-5.9%). The survey data highlighted the increase in spending by tourists from the
United States, which reached a total of 1,089 million, up 25.7%, and 5% of the total. This market presented the highest average expenditure per tourist, at 2,401 euros (+11.1%), with average daily spending of 158 euros (+3.4%). The Canary Islands, Catalonia and Andalucía were the regions to benefit most from the tourist expenditure, but all major tourist destinations accumulated significant increases. The Canary Islands received 5,419 million euros, equivalent to 24.8% of the total expenditure made by international visitors to Spain to the end of May, with an increase of 1.3%, followed by Catalonia, with 4,796 million euros (22% of the total, and an increase of 8.2%) and Andalucia with 3,440 million euros (15.8% of the total, +10.3%). In Madrid, the fourth destination for spending, international tourists spent 2,505 million euros, representing an increase of 14.8% and 11.5% of the total spending by foreign visitors, while the Balearic Islands received 2,171 million euros in foreign visitors’ spending, representing an increase of 12.7% and 10% of the total expenditure made. Valencia received 1,757 million euros (+8.6%), and the remaining regions together shared 1,721 million euros in international tourist spending, representing 7.9% of the total, and a 15.2% increase over the first five months of 2014. keyero

Home Mortgages Increased by 21.4% in April
MortgagesThe number of mortgages constituted on homes listed in the Property Registers stood at 18,857 in April, which is 21.4% more than in the same month of 2014, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute, which pointed out that this data is derived from transactions carried out in previous months. Including the figure for April, the mortgage statistics have now accumulated eleven consecutive months of year-on-year increases. However, month-on-month, compared with March, the number of mortgages dropped by 4.8%. Moreover, the total value of these loans increased by 22% over the previous year, to reach 1,898.5 million euros, although since March the amount has fallen by 6%. The average mortgage value stood at 100,683 euros in April, which is virtually the same as a year earlier, with just a 0.6% increase, and is 1.3% less than in March. In total, the new mortgages constituted on all kinds of urban properties were worth 3,322.9 million euros, which is 3.3% less than a year earlier, and more than half of these loans, 52.1%, related to the purchase of homes.

Rolls-Royce profit warning
Rolls-Royce has issued its third profit warning in just over a year, blaming lower oil prices and weaker demand for some of its aircraft engines. Rolls last issued a profit warning in February, claiming the sharp fall in oil prices had “increased uncertainty for many of our markets and customers”. It had previously said its 2015 profit would be between £1.4bn and £1.55bn. But on Monday, the engineering firm lowered its profit outlook again, this time to between £1.325bn and £1.475bn. Rolls-Royce shares fell nearly 9% to 780p on the profit downgrade. Two things are weighing heavily on Rolls Royce the low oil price and the development of its new jet engine. Rolls-Royce makes much of its money in its marine division supporting oil exploration - building vessels and rig support equipment. With oil giants pulling back on capital investment, the division has suffered. It has also been caught out by its development of the new Trent 7000 jet engine - announced in Farnborough last year - which replaces the Trent 700. Orders have fallen for the older model faster than expected as customers wait for the new engine which will come into service in 2017. “Bloody” was one description of this morning’s announcement by a senior figure close to the business. Warren East, the new chief executive of Rolls Royce, will be given a period of grace while he works out where Rolls-Royce’s real growth areas are. But the fall in the share price this morning shows that investors are waiting to be convinced that the company has the right strategy in place. null. The Night of San Paco, El Loco
The second of July is ‘La Noche de San Paco, El Loco’ in Alqueria. Just why one of Loco Paco’s ancestors was canonised is an unanswered question. According to the High Church of Alqueria of which there are but three members, a potential saint must perform at least two miracles. Knowing the date is a marvel for anyone of Paco’s bloodline, tying shoelaces unaided falls into the miracle category while walking and talking simultaneously is something they can only aspire to. Whatever the reasons, which are now shrouded in the mists of time the celebration was to take place as usual beginning with the setting of the sun. The evening starts with the veneration of Paco who is carried shoulder high to the Bar La Casa Devante. Paco is then plied with free beer and treated to a lapdance performed by Dolores Plumpthigh. At this point Paco usually passes out, partly due to his intolerance to alcohol and partly from the effects of Dolores’s weight upon his lower abdomen. The sight of the inert Paco raises a cheer among onlookers and signals the start of the serious festivities. Music is supplied by Alfonso Largepart playing the ‘Malruido’, a traditional Alquerian instrument. Looking suspiciously like a Scottish bagpipe the sound is said to resemble the laughter of angels. While this cannot be disputed due to lack of witnesses others say it is more reminiscent of the sound made by an Alquerian Kunekune Pig undergoing castration. Three-toed Río Verde Newts
are fried over charcoal and consumed with gusto. It is only during July that the Newt is edible at other times they cause blindness, foot-rot and autonomy of the bowels. Girls of marriageable age or those just looking for a good time place a sprig of Remitroot in their cleavage, Manuela uses the whole branch. Remitroot based alcohol is traditionally drunk in all its various forms from a vessel called a ‘Grogenswallow’. This singular and convoluted piece of glassware resembles the large intestine of the yak and doubles as an effective weapon for use in fist fights which traditionally beak out at the end of the evening. Large exaggerated, bulbous and hideous statues are constructed by the opposing barrios and paraded through the streets of Alqueria. As the church clock strikes twelve these obscene and monstrous effigies are burnt, at last year’s event someone tried to set fire to Rodriquez by mistake. The streets of Alqueria are packed for this celebration so be warned, arrive early and bring your own Grogenswallow.

Before we had had time to park our posteriors the waiter was upon is. ‘To drink?’ Our order was but seconds old when the drinks arrived. ‘To eat? You must eat, you can not sit at this table unless you eat.’ He hovered menacingly over us, pad and pen at the ready. ‘Can you give us a minute?’ Pete asked. It was 12.10, and we had to be at the coach pick-up point 30 minutes distant at 3.00, so we had over 2 hours, plenty of time for a Menu del Dia. The waiter turned on his heel and left while we turned over the menu and read. At that moment we must have slipped into an alternative Universe and become invisible and inaudible, because the waiter took orders and brought food and drink to every other table except ours despite our best and politest efforts to engage his attention. At 1.00 I got up and accosted him directly. ‘Menu del Dia’ I said. ‘I’ll have soup, and my husband will have …..’ ‘That is not possible.’ He interrupted. ‘The Menu del Dia is for one person, not to share.’ He put his pad back in his pocket and squared his chin. I narrowed my eyes. ‘Fine. I’ll have the Menu del Dia, and my husband will have a coffee.’ The unspoken subtext was Don’t you square your chin at me, especially when you’ve just spent 50 minutes ignoring me – you want awkward, I’ll give you awkward. The unspoken reply was I’ll burn

He did not add Gotcha, but he certainly thought it. Did I believe him? No, but I smiled sweetly. Nothing derails an argument, or is more irritating than a sweet smile. ‘Never mind. We’ll have two portions of chicken and chips instead.’ I improvised, as two portions of chicken and chips were carried by the kitchen girl to the adjacent table. He vacillated, searching every recess of his mind for some reason why we couldn’t have chicken and chips. None occurred to him, so he glared at me and left with bad grace. Make the stuffing: heat the oil in a medium pan with a lid and fry the pine nuts until lightly toasted, then add the rice and fry until the grains are glossy. Stir in the garlic, then add the stock and bring to the boil. Cover and cook for 10 minutes, until the rice is tender. Remove from the heat, cool slightly and stir in the spring onions, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella, gorgonzola and fresh herbs. Season well and leave to cool. Stuff the peppers: cut around the stalk from one pepper, remove and set aside. Make one slit down the length of the pepper and open out gently. Remove the seeds and membrane. Spoon some filling into the pepper cavity, taking care not to overfill. Take about a metre length of kitchen string and wrap the centre point several times around the pepper stalk, tying it firmly. to Top with the stalk and wrap the ends of the string several times around the pepper secure the filling. Tie the ends in a knot. Repeat with the other peppers. Barbecue the stuffed peppers over moderate heat for 15-20 minutes, turning gently until the peppers are evenly browned. What happens when an animal can't get along with his own kind - Well he moves in with some kind humans and becomes a pet - At least that's what happened to this little lamb - Meet Nick Boing, an unusual pet with an unusual name. Nick's story began about three years ago when his owner David Palmer and his family were visiting the Goldcliff Nature Reserve in Newport, England. They stumbled upon a newborn lamb bleating in the reserve's tall grass. They picked it up and tried to leave it at a nearby farm - However, the lamb refused to go and kept following the Palmer
family around until they decided to take him home. Once home, they fed him with a baby bottle and within an hour the little lamb started running around like he belonged there. After that, there was no going back! Though the Palmers tried to take the lamb back to a farm twice, he refused to settle down with the other sheep. They finally gave up and decided to just keep him. Now three years later, Nick Boing, who got his name because he was so 'bouncy', weighs over 220 lbs and lives a comfortable life in a village in Cardiff,UK. He spends his days sitting near the front door, watching the world go by,

Joy Lennick makes it clear that her temporary stay on Mountain Hare and its ominous coal slag, looking down on Merthyr Tydfil was a treasured time in spite of being separated from her family. Her childhood memories were ones of kindness, curiosity and hostility: “as the years multiply, it seems to spin like a giddying, gaudily colourful tin top from my childhood.” The 1930s were eventful years probably for all the wrong reasons. Regarded as the grimmest years since the end of WW1 “unwept, unhonoured and unsung” it is a naive statement to say that this was a wonderful time to be born. It wasn’t. Remember the Hindenberg disaster, Hitler as German Chancellor, the Japanese invasion of China or the Spanish Civil War, an unending list of disasters. Coming up to the late thirties Dagenham in Essex was still considered to be “pretty in places” with a few thatched cottages, a friendly and peaceful environment although that was soon to change. The slaughterhouse was a blot on the landscape, a sharp contrast and through the innocence of the child, “War was a foreign country and just a three lettered word.” It meant nothing to the likes of Joy Lennick, too young to feel threatened by an unknown entity. It’s intriguing how often I find the scriptures set for a given Service in the Church Lectionary hit home with particular force. So, a couple of weeks ago, I found myself reading an extract from the letter written by St Paul to Christians living in Rome, in which he advises first that “Governors are God’s ministers for good” (pretty incredible when you think how successive Caesars were treating Christians at the time) and then continues with the instruction that they should “owe no one anything except to love each other”. Now of course that sounds easy doesn’t it; but we often have a slightly one-sided view of love, reserved for those close to us, and usually with quite a bit of self-interest included. St Paul, on the other hand explains that we should love everyone, whether we like them or not, including Politicians, Refugees, Criminals, yes and even Terrorists, trying our best, however evil their actions may seem, to understand their viewpoint and desiring the best for them (which may, of course be quite different from what they’d want for themselves), regardless of any potential cost or disadvantage to self. And of course Jesus is the perfect example of this sort of love. He cared deeply for everyone, including his enemies and
even Judas, who betrayed him. He accepted, even a pretty corrupt regime, advising his followers to “give to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, yet counted zealots as well as social outcasts, prostitutes and Government officials among his circle of friends. And in spite of all the rumours, the gossip, the public attack and ridicule, we never hear of him feeling offended or ‘hurt’ by anything anyone said or did to him. How different is my concept of love! When I judge or get annoyed with others, I demonstrate my lack of love. When someone hurts my feelings, causing some inner resentment, I’m clearly not displaying true Christian love. It’s a tough call, but how much better if only we could all love as St Paul urged. JOE ROOT – STAR BATSMAN By Tony Matthews
The Sheffield-born Yorkshire and England batsman and occasional spin bowler, nicknamed ‘Rootay’ is 24 years of age and is already a world class cricketer. Talking publicly during a recent short break here in Spain, at the Desert Springs golf and sports complex, Joe admitted that he’s enjoying his cricket more than ever these days... and is certainly looking forward to the Ashes Series with the Aussies. Said Vaughan: “He’s still very young and I believe he will become one of the world’s greatest-ever run-makers” said former England captain Michael Vaughan. Joe played in his first Test Match for England in the 2012 series in India (becoming the 655th player to star for his country) and made his ODI and T20 International debuts on the same tour, before scoring his
maiden Test century on his home ground of Headingly, Leeds, the following spring against New Zealand. Joe had played his first game for Yorkshire in a second XI game in July 2007, scoring 57 and putting on 133 for the first wicket with another future England batsman Adam Lyth. He continued to represent his county’s Academy side and was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ when Yorkshire won the ProArch Trophy in Abu Dhabi. After success at second team level, Joe played in Yorkshire’s first XI in a Pro-40 match against Essex, top-scoring with 63 in his side’s total of 187-7. Although his half-century could not inspire his team to victory, Joe described his debut as a “dream come true”. After another ‘Man of the Series’ performance, this time on England U19 duty in Bangladesh, Joe signed a threeyear professional contract with Yorkshire. “This made my day” he enthused. Selected for the U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand, he made an unbeaten 70 in a victory over Hong Kong as England progressed to the quarter finals before being eliminated by the West Indies. Later that winter, Joe was sent to the Darren
Hamilton wins British GP
Lewis Hamilton battled through a bad start and laterace rain to win an action-packed British Grand Prix Hamilton had to pass both Williams after losing the lead off the line and second place at a re-start following an early safety car. But the Mercedes driver fought back to take the lead at the first pit stops. Rain made for a chaotic end to the race but Hamilton came through to win from team-mate Nico Rosberg and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel. Felipe Massa took fourth ahead of Williams teammate Valtteri Bottas, Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat was sixth, Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg claimed seventh and the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen came eighth. The world champion’s fifth win of the season extending his championship lead to 17 points - was greeted with roars of delight from the capacity 140,000 fans. Hamilton admitted the Mercedes’ bad starts had “made the race for the fans” and, as thousands streamed on to the track to salute him on the podium, he said: “Thank you for coming out today and making my whole weekend, I really wanted to do it for you guys. I couldn’t have done it without you. I’m so elated. You can’t imagine how happy I am. I was tearing up on the last lap.” Hamilton’s path to victory was far from smooth, however, as Massa leapt into the lead past both Mercedes from third on the grid. Hamilton fended off a challenge from Bottas for second on the first lap, at the end of which the safety car was deployed because of a pile-up at the first corner, involving both Lotuses and both McLarens. Three of the four cars were taken out of the race in one go, with Lotus team-mates Romain Grosjean and Pastor Maldonado appearing to collide and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso half-spinning as he took avoiding action and collecting team-mate Jenson Button, whose car also retired.
Alonso was able to continue, but needed to pit for a new front wing, although the late rain shower helped the double champion beat Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson to finish 10th and score his first points of a difficult year in the uncompetitive and unreliable McLaren-Honda. At the restart, Hamilton tried an aggressive move on Massa immediately after the safety car line, which indicates the place from which drivers can begin to race and at Silverstone is on the entry to the final Vale-Club corner complex. But Hamilton overcooked it, ran briefly off the track, and Bottas took advantage and sneaked through into second. Bottas was initially told he could not try to pass Massa, only for Williams to relent and allow them to race. But the Finn could not pass the Brazilian as the two silver Mercedes tracked the two white Williams to the first pit-stop period. Hamilton was brought in first, on lap 19, and the so-called ‘undercut’ worked perfectly as he produced what Williams technical chief Pat Symonds called a “stunning” in-lap. A quick pit stop and a strong first lap out of the pits meant that when Massa and Rosberg pitted on the next lap Hamilton passed them before they were back out the circuit. Rosberg came oh-so-close to beating Massa out -

His top score was 236 for Yorkshire a g a i n s t Derbyshire in May 2013 and his best Test knock was 200 not out against Sri Lanka at Lords in June 204. To date Joe has registered 32 centuries and 57 fifties. He has taken 76 wickets (avg. 48.75) and he has now played in 247 cricket matches for county and country... and there will be many more games to follow for Joe Root – super batter from the Steel City of Sheffield. the two cars were side by side as they went down the pits, but Massa had the inside line for the corner where the pit lane rejoins the track and held on to second. Even worse for Rosberg, when Bottas stopped on the next lap, the Finn rejoined ahead of the Mercedes and although Rosberg overtook him into Turn Four, Bottas got straight back in front through the kink at Turn Five. Rosberg stayed stuck in fourth place until lap 36 of 52 when light rain began to fall. At first, it hit only the northern part of the track at Luffield, Woodcote and Copse corners but a wobble from Bottas at Copse gave Rosberg the chance he needed and he took third, and then a couple of laps later moved into second past Massa at Turn Three. The rain, which stopped and then returned with greater intensity over the whole of the track, was bad news for Williams, both of whose cars were passed by Vettel as the teams juggled with tyre choices in the intermittent rain at the end of the race. It was an unexpected surprise for Ferrari at the end of one of their least competitive races of the season. bbcsport

the man who saved barcelona
A plaque has been unveiled in Dublin in recognition of an Irishman who saved Barcelona FC during the Spanish Civil War. The Irishman - Patrick O’Connell - was manager of Barcelona in the 1930s played a major and there is no doubt that he kept the club alive. Born in 1887, Pat played for Belfast Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City and Manchester United as well as his country, who he skippered on several occasions, including Ireland’s Home International Championship triumph for the first time in 1914. After the Great War he had first spell in football management when he took charge of non-League side North Washington. He later managed Racing Santander, here in Spain, before moving to Real Betis whom he guided to their only La Liga title in 1935. He was then appointed manager at Barcelona in readiness for the 193536 season by the club’s President Josep Sunyol, who tragically was assassinated by General Franco’s troops in early August 1936. With the military conflict at its height, the offer for Barcelona to tour Mexico in 1937 was gratefully accepted and Pat elected to take a squad of 16 players with him. Surprisingly, only manager Pat and four players chose to return to Spain. But what also returned was a considerable kitty as the tour had generated almost 13,000 US dollars profit, which cleared Barcelona’s debts after it was deposited into a French bank account to prevent Franco stealing it! The tour to South America had no doubt saved Barcelona football club… thanks for sure to Pat O’Connell.
Little wonder then that he is often referred to as ‘the saviour of FC Barcelona’. The 2015 European Champions sent the club’s ambassador, former Spurs striker Steve Archibald, over to Dublin to officially unveil the plaque on the 5th June at Pat’s former home in Fitzroy Avenue next to Croke Park. This followed a major which took place the previous evening at Dublin’s Mansion House, at which a fellow football historian of mine, Mark Metcalf, was one of the speakers. Meanwhile, two further events are being organised during the summer…. in Belfast in August and near an unmarked grave in a cemetery in North London. There are further plans for a bust of Pat to go on display at the Nou Camp and for a book to be published on his remarkable life. @ Mar Menor Golf Wednesday 24th June 2015 The day started for some with a great breakfast served up at the Galleon Bar before we set out on the road to Mar Menor Golf Resort. A turnout of 19 players with one player forgetting he had subscribed to the event. We took advantage of the May & June offer from IRM of €35 for Green Fee & Buggy. The course was in good condition, however, the greens were poor. The weather was hot and when the wind did pick up for once this was welcome. The winning score of 37 points was shot by Nikki Ead who played very well, stating that she played well due to being in a group of good golfers. After the game most of the players headed back for some much needed refreshment and to discuss the ups and downs of the day. A big thank you to Tracey & Steve at the Galleon Bar, Quesada for donating the vino and serving up a cracking Chilli con Carne & Rice. Even with baking temperatures, although offset at least partly by an early start, Villamartin still attracted many SMGS members for the society’s monthly get together at the course. Forty-one were joined by 3 guests to play in a regular stableford competition. Once again set up long, the fairways and greens were in good condition. Gold category players made hay, but it was from the Bronze Category that the day’s top score came, with Brian Mulligan coming in with 40 points. Tony Smale, Colin Rust, Eva Pettersson and Steve Higgins also bettered their handicaps. Two matches were held in this year’s SMGS Individual Matchplay competition. John Aitchison beat Robin Eastman at the first play-off hole in the remaining quarter final game. And in the first of the semifinals, Mike Jordan beat Norman Padmore 3 and 1. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Derek Johnston (31), 3rd Mick Roscoe (32 on CB), 2nd Ray Ewins (32 on CB), and 1st, streaks ahead of the rest in the category, Brian Mulligan (40). After the Formentera del Segura 7’s the team have now entered the San Javier beach 5’s tournament on 18 July, kicking off at 09.00. The team is gaining new members all the time and now entering different tournaments in the area to gain match experience ready for the new season ahead. With new players coming in all the time the club is making good steady progress, considering it has only been going since February. Also this Friday at the Bridge Bar at 20.00 we have our first AGM to pick the committee for the club to take it to the next step. Anybody who wants to come along and join the club is very welcome. During the summer months training is continuing on Guardamar beach on Monday and Wednesday at 20.00, so anybody who wants to come along and take part is more than welcome. The next tournament is the San Juan beach 7’s one on 1 August. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome, from beginners to

It brought to a close a superb campaign for England, who finished as the top European nation and are now set to climb from sixth in the world rankings after a tournament during which they generated strong and welldeserved support at home. However, they were thankful for a glaring miss from Bianca Schmidt four minutes from the end as they held on to their slender lead. The result was tribute to the progress that England have made under Mark Sampson after the Welshman took over 18 months ago. It also put a positive spin on their campaign after the cruel 2-1 semi-final defeat following Laura Bassett’s injury-time own goal against Japan. The team are set to receive an additional £2,000 for winning the bronze medal, taking their World Cup bonus payments to £14,000. Sampson’s education as England head coach has now come full circle, following a 3-0 defeat by the eight-time European champions last November. This time the 32-year-old Sampson chose to be more conservative in his tactical approach and it paid off as his team lined up with three centrebacks, which included Jo Potter alongside Steph Houghton and Bassett, who showed no hangover
from her semi-final heartache. But the formation allowed space in front of the defence and the European champions could have scored three times in the first 10 minutes, with tournament top scorer Celia Sasic wasting a great chance before the impressive Houghton cleared off the line. During an open start to the game, Houghton had the best opening of the first half but mistimed her shot from seven yards. There was also a strong penalty appeal as Kemme appeared to block Potter’s shot with her hand. In her last World Cup game in charge, German coach Silvia Neid became frustrated with England’s aggressive approach, but it ensured the match remained goalless at the break. Having named an under-strength side, Neid brought on Melanie Leupolz to add more mettle to the German midfield and they began to create the better chances. Bardsley saved Sara Daebritz’s header before Houghton blocked Lena Petermann’s close-range shot. But the introduction of Eniola Aluko, who had not played since England’s second game against Mexico, swung the game back in England’s favour and she laid on a pass to Jill Scott, who wasted a great opportunity with 13 minutes remaining. The Lionesses were buoyed going into extra-time and their determination to not bow down to a world superpower of women’s football helped create the penalty, which led to joyous scenes at the final whistle as a superb campaign ended on a high. Another fairly high scoring and competitive Trophy game, this time we took 24 players to La Marquesa where the fairways were a bit rough but the greens were very good and true, and although the day was fairly hot everyone gave a good account of themselves with a wide variety of winners, which were, nearest the pins on the par 3s Ray Muttock, Jim McCarthy, Marc Doherty and Nick Belt. Nearest the pin in 2 was Colin Fear, Best front nine Ray Muttock and best back Tony Roberts. Silver division

The opportunity for the London Olympics to inspire a generation of children to participate in sport has been squandered, Tessa Jowell has said. The former Olympics minister, who is standing to be Labour’s candidate for London mayor, blamed her “wicked and negligent successors” in government. But she said the regeneration of east London, a key pledge, was a success. The government said 1.4 million more people were playing sport each week than when London’s Olympic bid was won. But a spokesman for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said more needed to be done to attract people from all backgrounds. ‘Wasted opportunity’ Dame Tessa’s comments come exactly 10 years after London was awarded the Games in 2005. She was Olympics minister when the decision was announced. She told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “My particular concern is that the second legacy promise was to transform a generation of young people through sport. “Actually children in school now are playing less sport than they were in 2009. “That’s why it is a wasted opportunity.” A Youth Sport Trust survey of 1,392 primary schools in 2013/14 found that the average number of minutes children spent taking part in PE in a typical week was 102 for Key Stage 1 and 114 for Key Stage 2.
