Spanish economy grew 3.2% in 2015

The National Statistics Institute (INE) on Friday confirmed an estimate advanced by the Bank of Spain a month ago: gross domestic product (GDP) grew 3.2% last year, the greatest uptick since 2007, before the

crisis hit. The Spanish economy managed to prolong its upward pace in the final stretch of the year, posting fourthquarter growth of 0.8% from the previous three months (or 3.5% compared with the last quarter of 2014). Although the INE will take a few more weeks to provide details of the national accounts in the three months

to December 31, the Bank of Spain has already attributed this economic vigor to the strength of private consumption and business investments. Overall data show that 2015 was generally a good year for the job market, although the unemployment rate is still 20.9%, according to the workforce sample study Active Population Survey (EPA), released on Thursday. Employment figures for 2015 are also good, the survey shows. The year ended with an additional 525,100 people in work, for a total of just over 18 million individuals in employment, a 3% rise from late 2014. The last time employment figures rose at a similar rate was in 2006, before the start of the economic crisis. Two days ago, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos advanced that the drop in unemployment would be “the most intense in our country’s history.” Broken down by sectors, the majority of hirings in the last quarter were in agriculture (70,200) and services (54,900), while jobs were lost in industry (55,500) and construction (24,100). Three-quarters of at-risk drinkers in Spain unaware of dangers of alcohol

One in every six Spaniards over the age of 18 consumes worrying amounts of booze

Around one in six Spaniards over the age of 18, or 17.1% of the population, drinks too much. That’s according to a survey conducted by Danish pharmaceuticals company Lundbeck, and which was presented on Wednesday in Madrid by a panel of experts. “Spain is always among the countries with the highest alcohol consumption, along with France, Portugal, and Italy,” said Julio Bobes, president of Socidrogalcohol, a research organization into alcohol and drug dependence. “But just as important as the data, or more so, is the trend,” added Antoni Gual of Barcelona’s Hospital Clinic. general, 18- to 25-year-olds drink the most, and men more than women: 19.6% and 14.5%, respectively, are considered at risk; conversely, 16.6% of men were teetotal, a figure that rose to 27% for women. Bobes highlighted the dangers of drinking at an early age, saying that the brain was still developing until our mid-twenties and that alcohol interferes with the process. Also at the presentation was José Ángel Arbesú of the Spanish Association of Primary Care Medics (Semergen), who underscored the problem Spanish society has in recognizing that alcoholism is a danger to health, pointing out that 12.4% of respondents to the Lundbeck survey believed that alcoholism is a vice, while 33.7% described it as an illness that starts with a vice. This belief delays alcoholics from seeking help, when “the most important thing is to be aware that there is a health problem,” said Arbesú, noting that around 40,000 people die each year in Spain from alcohol-related illnesses: “There are up to 64 illnesses directly and indirectly related to alcohol, such as hepatitis, cancer, and mental illness” Javier Zarco of the Spanish Society for Family and Community Medicine (Semfyc) said that Spain’s general practitioners are trained to deal with people with alcohol problems, noting that the survey reflected the public’s confidence in their doctors, with most people saying this would be their first

port of call when seeking help, followed by associations such as Alcoholics Anonymous and specialist treatment centers. Coming a distant fourth were psychologists, although younger respondents said they were more likely to seek help from this source. “This is an important point because there aren’t many psychologists working in local health centers,” he warned. The panel of experts at the Lundbeck presentation called for legislation to regulate alcohol consumption, with Bobes accusing politicians of failing to act. Gual called for laws not only to regulate price and access to alcohol, but for controls on advertising: “Each day, the industry spends a million euros promoting alcoholic drinks. Elvis Tribute Thanks Paul Cunningham Nurses

The packed audience at The Club, Quesada, rocked, swayed and danced the night away to a Elvis tribute, all on behalf of Paul Cunningham Nurses Charity, last Saturday night. Nigel Burchill was singing Elvis songs from throughout the decades and with much fun and laughter as well. The charity would like to say huge thank yous to John, Carolyn and Nicky and all their staff for the delicious food and their hard work. Thanks also go out to all who attended and supported the charity which help raise the sum of 600 Euros during the night. Tricia Lee, Fundraiser, was also presented with a generous donation of 212.50 Euros from a wonderful lady Barbara Sunter, from the Golden Girls in Daya Nueva. Barbara has now returned to live in the UK and we wish her much health and happiness in her new life. The next charity event will be at Casa Ventura. Rock star David Bowie leaves $100m in will

Rock star David Bowie left an estate valued at about $100m (£70m), according to his will which has been filed in New York. Half will go to his widow, Iman, along with the home they shared in New York. The rest is shared between his son and daughter. It was also revealed that Bowie had requested that his ashes be scattered in Bali in a Buddhist ritual. The singer died of cancer on 10 January, aged 69. The will was filed in a Manhattan court on Friday under Bowie’s legal name, David Robert Jones. The star’s personal assistant, Corinne Schwab, was left $2m and another $1m went to a former nanny, Marion Skene. Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones, and daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones, both received 25% of the estate. Alexandria was also left a home in upstate New York. In the will, written in 2004, Bowie asked that he be cremated in Bali but if that was “not practical”, then his ashes be scattered there anyway “in accordance with the Buddhist rituals”. Bowie’s body was cremated on 12 January in New Jersey, according to a death certificate filed with the will. Buddhist rituals after

Scientists get ‘gene editing’ go-ahead UK scientists have been given the go-ahead by the fertility regulator to genetically modify human embryos. It is the first time a country has considered the DNA-altering technique in embryos and approved it. The research will take place at the Francis Crick Institute in London and aims to provide a deeper understanding of the earliest moments of human life. It will be illegal for the scientists to implant the modified embryos into a woman. But the field is attracting controversy over concerns it is opening the door to designer - or GM - babies. Reading this at the start of February we will be in one of Spain’s most remarkable few weeks ……… the gorgeous almond blossom season …….. The acres of white and pink blossom must be one of “the wonders of Spain !”. Every year it amazes me ……… I often think it looks like snow. If you have not seen it to its full extent take a drive between Las Palas and La Pinilla ………. The fields are just covered. I hope , for the almond farmers and all farmers , that the extremely dry and warm winter does not affect their production. Any regular readers will know I have a large cultivated garden with two wells supplying the water for it ………. Usually in the winter I get a break from the twice weekly watering but not this year ……. Luckily the wells have remained wet but I suspect this summer will see them going dry ……….. Apart from the water shortage all is well at Casa Rainbow ……. All the animals like the fires alight and the lazy winter evenings ! TV NEWS ………… Not so much in the way of new items this month ……. I think all the broadcasters get all the new channels and features in line for the festive season leaving January quite flat for news ………. The satellite signals seemed to have been quite strong over the last few months with reasonable viewing for all sized dishes. Some channels and the FREESAT control frequency have definitely weakened making recording on FREESAT PLUS boxes sometimes a little random but that is a small price to pay. GOLD ,YESTERDAY and DRAMA are amongst some of the channels that have migrated to the weaker frequencies and you may have trouble with reception of these on the smaller dishes. If you are thinking of a dish upgrade really do consider moving to internet TV and abandoning the huge eyesore dish. This really is the way forward with both the IPTV servers improving service and the internet providers realising that they must support constant downloads from TV watchers ……………. Ask for a demonstration of our internet TV if you are undecided. Many of you access BBCiplayer and the like through a VPN and

effectively a UK ipaddress fooling the BBC and others into thinking you are in the UK and not Spain and allowing their service to operate. Well the BBC has announced that it will be stopping this from happening sometime soon – not sure how they plan to do that but have said they will.The computer geeks will soon have a way round it again and so the “chase” will go on. Why don’t the BBC and the like – all over Europe – just allow any nationality TV in any country ……. Particularly within the EU – instead of spending millions trying to stop us all the time. We can live , work , get benefits , get medical treatments in the EU but we can not watch our national TV outside our home country – come on Brussels sort this mess ! I understand that the BBC is a special case being funded by the TV Licence and not advertising which , in the main , is international but I am sure an “overseas” licence could be offered with coded strong small dish signals which would make us “pirates” on big dishes obsolete. Maybe one day ? Buying a house down here in glorious southern Spain – well if TV is important – and the winters are long , dark and chilly ! – Just check that UK TV is available at the property before you finally sign – ask a reputable TV installer to survey. HUGE dishes or A1 internet is the only way to view UK TV here and is not always possible – it is to late once you have purchased !!!! Almond Trees

The almond tree is one of the first trees to flower at the close of winter and in February large parts of Spain are dressed with light and colour. The "Almendros" (almond trees) are in bloom, a fact that marks the beginning of spring. It lasts approximately 3 weeks, and is a spectacular sight. The almond tree (Prunus dulcis) is a small to medium sized deciduous fruit tree within the rose (Rosaceae) family, along with other tree fruits such as peaches, apples, pears, plums, cherries, and apricots. Within the genus, almonds are most closely related to the peach, and hybrids of the two are used as rootstocks. Almonds are native to the Mediterranean region of the Middle East, explaining their requirement of mild winters and long dry summers. Almonds were domesticated at least by 3000 BC, and perhaps much earlier since wild almonds have been unearthed in Greek archaeological sites dating to 8000 BC. The almond was spread along the shores of the Mediterranean in northern Africa and southern Europe by Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans. In Greek mythology the almond tree is represented by the beautiful princess Phyllis. Left at the altar on her wedding day, Phyllis waited for years before finally perishing of a broken heart. In sympathy, the gods transformed her into an almond tree, as a symbol of hope. When Phyllis' fiancee returned to find her as a leafless, flowerless tree, he embraced it and the tree burst into bloom.

Flowering & Fruiting

Almond flowers are nearly identical to peach and other Prunus flowers, but are more fragrant and tend to be either light pink or white. The almond tree is not self-pollinating and must be crosspollinated. Because of this, honeybees or other pollinators are essential to fruit production. However, there is a lot of work being done on developing a prolific nut producing, self-fertile almond. In the meantime, it is possible to buy grafted compatible varieties of almonds to reduce the need for two trees. The soft, fuzzy almond tree fruit is called a drupe. Prior to "ripening", the hull dries and splits, revealing the nut, within which lies the kernel that we love to eat. There are two types of almonds trees, the bitter, used for almond essence, and the sweet almond tree, grown in home gardens and perfect for eating. The bitter almond is a cousin to the sweet almond, but contains traces of lethal prussic acid (Hydrogen cyanide) in its raw state. The toxicity is destroyed by heat, so it is safe to eat any dish prepared with bitter almonds, but unprocessed bitter almonds can be lethal The white blossoms produce sweet almonds while the pink ones produce the bitter variety.

Almond Tree Nuts Spain

Almond trees require at least 2 to 3 years to produce fruit, with maximum nut production in 6 to 10 years. Unlike its short-lived cousin the peach, almond trees can produce for 50+ years. Thinning is unnecessary; a high proportion of flowers must set fruit for normal cropping. Like so many tree crops, rainfall damages fruit production once trees begin to bloom. Frost can be equally damaging, with both the blossoms and young fruits susceptible to frost damage. Almonds are harvested in summer when the outer, fleshy hull starts to split open. Collect the nuts from the outer canopy of the tree first, by spreading a tarp on the ground below and knocking the tree. A couple of weeks later the nuts on the inner canopy will have ripened and can be harvested in the same way. Almond trees should be planted early in the year, when low temperatures prevent leaf buds from growing - this gives the roots time to regenerate before budding. Almonds do best in deep, welldrained soil that is reasonably fertile, but will tolerate poor soils. Pick a sheltered position that receives full sunlight. When almond trees are first planted, it is important to give them a boost with superphosphate, following up with a balanced plant food in autumn and spring thereafter. Gordon Goody passed away aged 86

Gordon Goody - the mastermind behind the notorious Great Train Robbery - has died aged 86. The former convict passed away at his home in Mojácar, southern Spain, where he had lived for more than 30 years following his early release from prison, according to local media. It is believed he died this morning, surrounded by his friends. Goody was one of the last surviving member of the 15-strong gang that stole a staggering £2.6million from a Royal Mail train travelling from Glasgow to London in August 1963. He was the suspected mastermind of the infamous heist and the deputy of gang leader Bruce Reynolds. The robber - who was arrested in a hotel with his girlfriend, a former Miss Great Britain, shortly after the crime - was released early from prison in 1975. He had served only 12 years of his 30-year sentence. During his time behind bars, Goody learned Spanish. He also suffered the loss of his beloved pet Alsatian ‘Sheena’, who reportedly could not bear to be without her master and eventually died. Once freed, Goody moved to Spain, and four years later, set up a beach bar called Kon Tiki. In recent years, he had been suffering from emphysema - a long-term, progressive disease of the lungs - and, at times, struggled to breathe. He relied on an oxygen mask, although reports a

‘World’s best chef’ Benoit Violier dies aged 44

Chef Benoit Violier, whose Swiss restaurant was named the best in the world in December, has been found dead at his home. Mr Violier, 44, ran the Restaurant de l'Hotel de Ville in Crissier, near the city of Lausanne. It earned three Michelin stars and came top in France's La Liste ranking of the world's 1,000 best eateries. Swiss police said Mr Violier, who was born in France, appeared to have shot himself. The Swiss news website 24 Heures said (in French) that Mr Violier had been due to attend the launch of the new Michelin guide in Paris on Monday. His death comes only months after that of Philippe Rochat, his mentor and predecessor at the Restaurant de l'Hotel de Ville, who fell ill while cycling. Having worked at the restaurant since 1996, Mr Violier took it over along with his wife Brigitte in 2012, later obtaining Swiss nationality. A keen hunter, he was known for signature dishes including game and produced a weighty book on game meat last year. The restaurant's menus ranged from a quick lunch menu at 195 Swiss francs ($191; £134) to a "discovery" set menu priced at 380 Swiss francs. He revealed that the informant was 43-year-old postal worker Patrick McKenna, from Belfast, whom

Can data rebuild investors’ confidence in Spanish property? One company is using open data published by the government to help foreign buyers make savvier decisions about what and where to buy The first time Lawrence Wood visited Lanzarote the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco was still in power. In 1968, the Spanish island represented a different proposition to investors. “A former employer was renovating an old camel stable in La Asomada,” recalls Wood, who instantly fell in love with the island. His old boss offered to sell him a patch of the land, but it wasn’t until the early 1980s that he took him up on his offer and started building his future home. Wood now considers the move the best decision he ever made, but readily admits that it was a huge financial gamble: “I got lucky.” Others have been less fortunate. In 2008, the ripples from the US banking and subsequent housing crash were starting to be felt across the world as property prices tumbled. In Spain, Barcelona and the surrounding Catalonia region were one of the worst hit. Prices nosedived. By 2013, property values had nearly halved. In the Valencia region prices fell drastically. Conor Wilde, managing director of property agent Found Valencia, says: “A lot of people lost a lot of money in the late 2000s. Some people went too far and invested too much.” Wilde blames a lack of buyer understanding. Despite advice to the contrary from agents, he says, many buyers ploughed money into properties and regions without knowing enough about the market. This supposed dearth of local knowledge for overseas property investors is an underlying reason why one company decided to explore the use of Spanish government open data to help its users make more informed purchasing decisions. That’s its mission statement anyway. Kyero has been helping its customers sell Spanish property online since 2003. It has been referred to as the Rightmove of Spain although Rightmove itself has recently set up shop in the region to compete. The decision to investigate Spanish open data was driven not so much by the data itself but, says the company’s CEO and founder Martin Dell, to solve a consistent problem. “The Spanish property market is heavily reliant on foreign buyers, and if you were to paint a statistically typical picture of those buyers, they’d be a married couple in their 50s whose dream is to spend their latter years in the sun,” says Dell. “While this is great, it is also this demographic that tends to take the most risk with investments.” It was an ambitious project as not all data sets were easy to find or in a condition that was conducive to easy reading, says Richard Speigal, head of research at Kyero and architect of the Data.kyero.com site. Spain started regularly publishing open data sets in 2013 and is now ranked 17th in the Global Open Data Index. It has a number of datasets published on sites such as the Instituto Nacional de

Estadistica and Data.gob.es, but while inconsistencies have made the project challenging, Speigal says the data is improving quickly. “We’ve now pulled in registrar transaction volumes, mortgage lending and the house price index as core data, and have added unemployment as a proxy for local economic strength,” he says. “There’s more to come too. Airport arrival data is a proxy for sentiment, and we also have bathing water quality to show the best beaches. We just keep lifting stuff when it answers a question.” So what impact is this having if any? The data site only went live towards the end of last year but Wilde is convinced it can only improve business. “Buyers will be better educated about pricing and areas they can and cannot afford,” he says. “It won’t speed up the sales process but it could make buyers more realistic.” It could also help to kick-start unfinished building projects if demand returns to pre-2007 levels, he adds, because the data could help identify up-and-coming areas where prices are low but land is ripe for longer-term investment. Although Wilde says there are still a lot of half-built properties around there is certainly optimism in the region, as overseas buyers, particularly from the UK are returning to the country – purchases by overseas buyers accounted for 18.41% of all transactions in Spain in the second quarter of 2015, according to Kyero. So what next for the data? Speigal says that the company has been approached by a number of agents to produce data cards for specific areas or regions. The company is also working on making the data simpler to understand and helping local businesses improve their chances of sales. While open data will not rescue this market from its deep recession and safeguard it from future crashes, it could prove to be a catalyst for a revival. Wilde and Speigal both accept that confidence needs rebuilding in Spain and this sort of information could be vital. Santos Gonzalez, president of Asociación Hipotecaria Española (AHE), Spain’s national mortgage association, agrees. “The more information available and the more transparent the markets, the better informed buyers will be,” he says. Peter Robinson, CEO of the Association of International Property Professionals, adds that as long as the data is easily accessible it “can only help in bolstering the rising levels of consumer confidence we are seeing in the overseas property market”. He says that the provision of accurate and more in-depth property data can only be a good thing, but is it enough to stop what he refers to as cavalier buyers who consistently “check their brains in at the airport”? 6 Tips to Avoid a Costly Winter Plumbing Leak

Your home plumbing could pay a big price if your house isn’t prepared for winter. Learn how to save cash and keep pipes from freezing. Plumbing problems seem to occur at the most inconvenient times — because the most inconvenient times are generally during seasons or events that put stress on your pipes. Seasonal shifts, whether related to festivities, winter temperatures or travel, have the power to push your plumbing to the brink. The following are our favorite tips from years of experience to help you prepare your plumbing for the cold-weather season, when anything can happen (and frequently does). 1. Protect your plumbing pipes from freezing When winter temperatures plummet, water can easily freeze inside, causing them to burst. If you are out of the house or unaware of a burst pipe, the results can be disastrous, including massive home floods and damage to your beloved furniture, rugs and home structure. To reduce the possibility of frozen pipes, wrap each of your un-insulated pipes in a blanket of foam. You can purchase foam tubes with a slit on the side at most hardware stores. Cut the tube to the length you need, pull it open and push it over and around

your pipe. Use duct tape to secure if the foam does not have self-adhesive edges. 2. Fix home plumbing leaks now The best time to get leaks repaired is the present. Check all of the faucets in your kitchen, bathrooms and utility room for drips and puddles. If you have a leaky faucet, contact your trusted plumber immediately to get your pipes back in tip-top shape. 3. Drain your water heater If you live in a location with hard water, sediment can build up in your tank, causing rust to develop inside. This rust can then find its way into your drinking, cooking and bathing water. If your hot water heater already is rusted or is too old, consider purchasing a new one before cold weather sets in. 4. Lose the outdoor hose to avoid frozen pipes Until warm weather returns, your best home plumbing practice is to disconnect, wrap up and pack away your garden hose. Leaving a hose connected outside in winter can cause water left inside to freeze and expand, freezing your faucets and connecting pipes as well. Just say no to hefty repair bills and yes to a hose and fixtures you can use next year. 5. Close and drain shut-off valves leading outdoors If you have interior shut off valves leading to outdoor faucets, close them and drain the water from outside lines. Any water that remains in the lines and freezes could cause major damage. 6. Clean your home’s sump pump pit Before cold weather hits, you will need to inspect and clean your sump pump and the pit in which it rests. When exposed to extreme cold, your pump can freeze, causing it to stop working. If your sump pump malfunctions, water can enter your basement and cause flooding, especially when winter rains are in full swing. Do yourself a favor and inspect your pump and pit now to avoid massive flood damage and cleanup bills later. Your winter should be full of cheer and warm family get-togethers, not exploded pipes and leaks that take days to fix. A Novia for Paco

As may be recalled the illustrious Loco Paco had a ‘crush’ on the lovely Manuela, in fact our little deranged hero was in love, unrequited as it turned out. Paco wasn’t one to brood however, he soon moved on, whether this was a measure of strength of character or the fact that his attention span was akin to that of a not too bright goldfish is difficult to tell. Paco’s ‘moving on’ involved starting a collection of ear wax from Abyssinian Goat Shirling champions of the twentieth century. A hobby which set him apart from his peers and also anyone with an elementary knowledge of hygiene. Paco passed his days surrounded by photographs from the Goat Shirling hall of fame. He carefully catalogued rows of phials containing the disgusting lumps of ear discharge. Just where he sourced the raw material is a mystery and perhaps it is best kept that way. Paco started to worry people, his behaviour became increasingly odd which is saying something considering he was a loony long before he started his singular collection. But, as has happened countless times before fate interceded and pulled this particularly troubled individual from the brink. The redeeming angel in this instant was Loca Pepa. Pepa was demure and not unattractive, she had recently escaped from a mental institution to the south of Madrid. The authorities followed her until she crossed into Alqueria, here she left Spanish jurisdiction and with Alqueria being a de-facto institution without bars they

joyfully closed her case file. Paco and Pepa found each other. Whether telepathy or some other mysterious mechanism was at work is academic, they found each other and Paco’s life was complete. Pepa was fascinated by Paco’s hideous collection of ear wax and delighted in shaping the slimy substance into stylised heart shapes with a ‘P’ inscribed in the centre. Whether this was a display of egotism or a measure of affection for Paco is difficult to say. Life was idyllic or as idyllic as possible for a brace of loonies. Paco, as has been mentioned before had a pet Saharan Dung Beetle named Bengy and Pepa arrived fully equipped with a female Brazilian Treehopper called Benjamina. Benjy and Benjamina gambolled barefoot through the wheat fields of Alqueria in the fundamental ecstasy of true love. Paco and Pepa watched as their charges were swept away on a tidal wave of emotion and pure sexual attraction, an attraction that only exotic beetles can know. We know by now the mental state of our hero Loco Paco and one can make an accurate assumption as to the stability of the newcomer Pepa, after the above text however the sanity of the author must also be brought into question.

Ricotta Pancakes with Mixed Berry Compote

Transform scrambled eggs into a ‘weekend special’ with a toasted bagel and succulent smoked salmon Arrange the salmon on two plates. Squeeze some lemon juice and black pepper over the top. Get the bagels ready to toast. Ingredient s (Serves 2) Crack the eggs into a jug. 140g smoked salmon Prick the yolks to burst, but 6 eggs do not beat. Melt the butter 1 lemon in a small pan over a low heat. 2 plain bagel When the butter has melted, 15g unsalted butter season (with salt and pepper) and pour in the eggs. Allow the eggs to cook for a few seconds and then stir gently and keep stirring the whole time the eggs are cooking. Start toasting the bagels just before you start the eggs. When the eggs are set and as you like them, serve them on a toasted bagel with the salmon and a wedge of lemon.

(Serves4) 250g ricotta 150g plain flour 185ml buttermilk 4 medium eggs , separated 50g butter , melted, plus extra for greasing 1 tsp baking powder 70g caster sugar , 20g for the pancakes, 50g for the compote 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 pinch salt 250g mascarpone 2 tsp vanilla bean paste , 1 tsp for the compote, 1 tsp for the mascarpone 400g fresh berries, plus 1 tbsp water

A delicious dessert, or even brunch, if you’re feeling decadent . Bring all the compote ingredients to the boil in a pan and simmer for 3-4 minutes until the fruit softens. Lightly mix vanilla bean paste and mascarpone. Do not over mix as it may curdle. Sift the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt into a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, egg yolks and butter, then pour into the flour mixture and whisk until smooth. Fold in the ricotta until just combined. Whisk the egg whites in a bowl until they form stiff peaks; gently fold in the batter. Grease a pan with butter, drop 2 tbsp batter in to make a pancake. Keep the cooked pancakes warm, repeat until the batter is all used. Serve with the mascarpone and compote.

APAH Animal Rescue Charity regrets to have to inform everyone that for the next few months, they will be unable to accept any new cats or kittens into their Cattery. Unbeknown to them, one of the litters of kittens accepted in last year, may have introduced FIP into their Cattery. This is a highly infectious virus, which can be passed from cat to cat through faeces. This makes shelters where cats share litter trays high risk areas. All APAH's Cattery volunteers have been informed and APAH is following strict instructions laid down by their vets, to hopefully contain the virus until it passes out of their Cattery. This is a heartbreaking situation for any animal rescue organisation, and is similar to having an outbreak of parvovirus in a kennels. APAH will not be in a position to accept any new cats or kittens until they are advised by their vets that it would be safe to do so.

“The art of losing isn’t hard to master. So many things seem filled with the intent that their loss is no disaster.” If we are defined by our intelligence, our language and articulation, then just imagine what it would be like to lose them all. Julianne Moore, a versatile performer, dubbed the Queen of realism, won an Academy Award in 2015 for her portrayal of Alice Howland, the 50 year old linguistics’ Professor from Columbia University, diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s, a rare familial type that meant her children stood a 50/50 chance of inheriting the gene. Recently we have seen a surge in films showing cancer victims as well as Alzheimer victims. Take for instance “The Fault in Our Stars” or “50/50” even “The Notebook” and “Away From Her.” Then, of course there’s John Bayley’s sad account of how Alzheimer’s claimed his wife, the famous writer Iris Murdoch in the film “Iris.” Bayley gave a brutally frank description of what it was like being married to someone with this disease. It is “like being chained to a corpse.” Superficially these films are seen as being similar. But “Still Alice” differs in that the main character is depicted as a fullyformed person right from the start and well-educated, before the disease brutally destroys her intellect, her memories and her ability to use language for communication. As the sufferer, it is Alice who is at the centre of it, helplessly watched by her family. The film begins deceptively with a 50th birthday celebration for Alice with everyone oblivious to the tragedy that will unfold before their eyes. It seems to be a happy occasion, a united family celebrating a birthday. Husband John, a physician (Alec Baldwin: Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, Blue Jasmine, Rock of Ages fame). Son Tom (Hunter Parrish), daughter Anna (Kate Bosworth) and husband, Charlie (Shane McRae). The only absence is Alice’s youngest daughter, Lydia (Kristen Stewart The Twilight Saga). The film is based on Lisa Genova’s debut novel. It was meant to be a small Indie film, a “little” independent project on a small budget of 4 million dollars and it took three and a half weeks to make. Alzheimer’s has become the most feared disease of the 21st century so it’s not surprising that this film took centre stage and attracted lots of interest. Its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival received critical acclaim, particularly from Moore’s performance, her “sheer precision and delicacy.” (Collin/The Telegraph.) Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia which causes memory loss, difficulty with thinking and language. It usually affects the over 65s, although people as young as 50 can develop the symptoms. For Alice, being diagnosed at 50 means it is seen as early onset Alzheimer’s. “We become ridiculous, incapable, comic, dependent, struggling to communicate or understand.” There is a sudden regression into helplessness. Behaviour turns strange, sentences become fumbled and people’s perceptions of sufferers will change. Memory lapses whilst giving a lecture make Alice anxious. She loses her grip temporarily, trying to search for the word “lexicon,” a word familiar to her. Following on, she goes out jogging around the campus and becomes lost and confused.

She stops and we see panic in her face. The camera rotates around her, encircling her. She is breathless, then loses focus and the image becomes blurred. She then stoops, takes a few deep breaths. We then see her at home, feeling despondent and exhausted. At Christmas she welcomes her son Tom’s girlfriend Christine twice. Nothing serious but these incidents do represent tell-tale signs that something isn’t quite right. She tells John: “It feels like my brain is f…ing dying. And everything in my life I have worked for is going.” Alice believes she has a brain tumour and visits a neurologist, Travis Benjamin who suggests doing an MRI followed by a PET scan. The scans show evidence of sporadic memory impairment caused by early onset Alzheimer’s. Alice is naturally devastated, wishing that she had cancer instead reminding us that people wear pink ribbons and raise money to show solidarity. What do they do for Alzheimer’s? “There’s a tremendous amount of shame around the disease and people feel like they’re not seen, they feel isolated.” (Julianne Moore.) To take some control over her mind whilst she can, she types a number of questions and answers into her phone such as her eldest daughter’s name and the month of her birthday. She consults this every day and keeps lists in her kitchen to memorize. Sadly, she records a message on her laptop, filed under Butterfly for when her condition becomes so severe and she instructs herself to take an overdose and end it. From time to time we see images of her late sister and mother who were killed in a car crash in 1972 when Alice was 18 years of age. They always seem happy, walking or playing on the beach. The film shows us Alice’s decline from forgetfulness to total destruction of her memory and intelligence. This absence and vacancy is what she referred to as hell and worse than that at the conference where she was invited to talk about her illness. The film successfully shows her pitiful decline without plunging us into flat despair. It is an emotional journey for us too but not as pitilessly harrowing as Michael Hanebe’s “Amour.” You’ll enjoy the intensity of this journey and hopefully learn to appreciate the simple things in life. “Because nothing is lost for ever. In this world there is a kind of painful progress. A longing for what we’ve left behind. And dreaming about.” Alice is still Alice in spite of this cruel illness. Her legacy lives on in her family. Believability.

Some teams have had to play with raincoats and umbrellas. Why dose it rain on Friday mornings? In division 1 Amigos Belgas 1 stay top of the league after a hard fought match at Buccaneers drawing 4-4. Rocajuna stay 2nd with a win over Lakeside Lakers 7-1. Los Bandidos go 3rd with a 6-2 win over Lakeside hellcats. Dominos Red had to play Dominos Dragons and came out winners 6-2. In division

2 Blagul 1 stay top of the division with a good win over Corsairs 7-1. Lakeside Mosquitos go 2nd with a close win over Danish Dynamite 5-3. Other good wins in this division for Amigos Belgas 2 and El Mirador Hawks. In Division 3 Pumas stay top with a 7-1 victory over Buddies. El Presidiente 1 verses Torre Bears 1 and Peacocks Red verses Amigos Belgas 3 both ended with 4-4 draws. Division 4 the top 3 all won with Guardamar top, Dominos McCoys second and San Miguel Tigers 3rd. El Raso Bandits move up to 4th place with a good away win over Hideaway.

Camposol Seniors Badminton, part of Club de Badminton de Totana, start 2016 in great shape...which is more than can be said for some of the players!!! During November and December the

club ran its annual Christmas lottery and we are pleased to announce that Camposol residents Brian and Carol Bridges (pictured), who purchased tickets at Tel’s Tuesday night quiz, won €530. Congratulations to you both. On the playing front things have never looked brighter, particularly for the Camposol Seniors section. In Totana there is a thriving junior section with new kids joining every week and under the expert guidance of our qualified coaches, their progress is astounding. We have a healthy intermediate group who are progressing all the time and following recent competitions both locally and in a National competition in Madrid, the future looks really bright. Sadly many of the clubs ‘star’ players who have been with us for many years and are truly exceptional, can no longer represent the club as they are all trying to find meaningful employment in the UK! Good luck to all of you! However,

at the recent National competition in Madrid, Cesar Fernandez won the men’s singles veterans title; he and his partner Carolina Lopez won the mixed doubles and Carolina and her partner were runners up in the ladies doubles. It has to be said however that the Spanish veterans c a t e g o r y commences at an age which could see them being the grandchildren of some of our own veteran players! Camposol Seniors, some of whom are pictured and whose ages range from early 40’s to well into their 70’s are regularly filling the sports hall on a Tuesday evening and Sunday morning. With up to 20 players turning up regularly, over 30 players on the books, and the Totana seniors regularly joining in, the section has never been stronger.

Last Saturday we celebrated our first Open Day for 2016 at La Serena our home course. Conditions were ideal for golf with glorious sunshine and a gentle breeze, making for ideal scoring. The course is in fantastic condition with receptive and fast greens, challenging rough and improved bunkers. Thanks again to the hard working green-keeping staff under the guidance of Wayne the head green keeper. As always the marshalls and clubhouse staff of Jean and Jose looked after all our needs and we were set for a great day of golf. The competitions committee under the guidance of Camillus and ably assisted by Philip, Andy and Alisdair had their most challenging event, with a field of 78 players a record turnout down to play and the new handicap requirements now in operation, the committee had us out on the course and everything running like clockwork, well done Cam and co. Our captain Bev Ellender was at hand to present our monthly prizes and the lucky winners were as follows; in our Crystal events, we had week one Winner Andy Thomas with 43 points and second Mary Wigley 42. Week two, winner David Gibson 41 points and second Michael Reeves with 39. Our monthly medal winners were, Cat II, George Thomas with 75 and Category I, Michael Banfield with 73. We also presented the Club Fourball prizes. We would like to thank Ronnie Drugan for kindly sponsoring the trophy for this event. Ronnie went on to compliment all the competitors in the event and congratulate the winners. The beaten finalists in a very closely fought competition, which was decided on the 19th hole in a sudden death play-off were, Lynda Adams and Andy Thomas. The winners of the event were Denis McCormack and John O’Brien. This was not the first time that Denis and John had to go down the 19th in this tournament, as they had won two previous matches on both the 19th and 22nd previously. Congratulations to the winners and to all those who took part. May I also

The new ForTwo and ForFour have been a big success for Mercedes sub-brand Smart, with UK sales doubling last year. Now we’ve tried the ForTwo Cabrio – the latest convertible version of the tiny city car. though. When engaged, it helps limit CO2 – and all • Best city cars More than 220,000 previous-generation Cabrios were sold globally, and this new model looks set to be just as popular. The formula’s the same, with a folding fabric roof that slides backwards and bunches up above the boot. It takes only 12 seconds to retract, and can be operated at any speed. There’s also a heated glass rear screen as standard. The roof goes through four stages: closed, partially open like a sunroof, fully folded back, and fully open with two roof bars removed from above the windows. These can be stored in the boot for the full drop-top experience, but it’s a hassle and means you can’t put the roof back up on the move. That’s important in the UK, where it could rain at any time. You’re likely to keep the top either closed or fully folded back with the bars still in place. With only the roof section open, the Cabrio’s very noisy above 35mph. Folding it right down cuts buffeting, making it surprisingly quiet even on the motorway. Apart from the roof, little separates the Cabrio from its coupe brother. It’s the same size, has the same engines and keeps the impressive 6.95-metre turning circle. It’s still great to drive in town, and at only 2.69m long and 1.66m wide, fits just about anywhere. The ForTwo is available with a choice of petrol engines: a 1.0-litre with 70bhp, or an 89bhp 900cc turbo. Both can be paired with a five-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch automatic box. We tried the latter with the more powerful engine, and it seemed right at home on the congested streets where Smart drivers spend most of their time. There’s not much power, but the low-down torque (135Nm at 2,500rpm) means the Smart feels nippy during quick overtakes at low speed. The auto is much smoother and smarter than the old, automated manual in the previous car, too. It makes sense to go for the self-shifter for city driving, but you’ll pay an extra £995 for the privilege. While dual-clutch set-ups are associated with fast shifts (they can pre-select a gear with the second clutch), the Smart’s feels like a standard torque converter. Changes aren’t jerky, but it takes longer than expected to drop a ratio when you put your foot down. One problem is the slow stop/start system. When you come to a halt, the engine cuts out with a splutter – and it takes a second or two to fire up again. The set-up can be turned off,

models emit less than 100g/km. Economy of 67.3mpg is the same as for the coupe, too. But as you might expect, the Smart feels out of its depth at high speeds. Progress is slow and it’s noisy when you accelerate hard. Even small steering inputs unsettle the car at speed, which doesn’t inspire confidence. On main roads it feels smooth, but potholes send a jolt through the cabin and things can get uncomfortable on poor surfaces. Thanks to our Prime model’s heated seats, you can stay warm with the roof down, even in winter. Other kit includes climate control and Bluetooth, while our test car also had optional sat-nav. In general the cabin is well built, but some aspects such as the overly sensitive temperature slider feel cheap. The decent space features door bins, storage nets and cup-holders. The boot’s the same size as the coupe’s, at 260 litres. It’s hard to believe buyers in this sector will be too bothered by this small space, but as there’s no ForFour cabrio, those needing extra room should look at the Fiat 500C or Peugeot’s 108, with its large folding sunroof. www.autoexpress.co.u

The Guardia Civil has launched this online police report system so that citizens can communicate certain crimes to the Spanish authorities. The citizen will be able to report document or personal items loss/findings, vehicle theft, subtractions from the inside of vehicles, robbery (without any violence or intimidation) and damage from unknown authors. All this and more can be reported at the “e-Denuncias Virtual Office”, which can be accessed at http://www.guardiacivil.es or https://e-denuncia. guardiacivil.es/eDenuncia/index.faces. Certain crimes cannot be reported, as those in which there is physical violence or other events where the authors are clearly identified. LA MARINA GOLF SOCIETY AT ALENDA

Once again, chilly but sunny weather greeted us at Alenda which, as usual, was in immaculate condition and resulted in some excellent scoring, many taking advantage of their revised handicaps to improve on last year. Gold winner with a great 34 points was Barry Thorogood who, without having had a handicap increase, continues to show his quality. Silver winner with 35 points was a surprised Pete Wootton ,who denied he had a chance until the results were all in and then celebrated with a small glass of red wine, the first for a week he assured us. He also bagged a nearest the pin on hole3, with other nearest the pin prizes going to Captain Jimmy Scott

[again] ,guest Dave Walsh and to Louvain Smith. Back to The La Marina Club for the prize-giving, where Helena provided us with a very welcome meal of Chicken and chips. Our thanks to her. Our next meeting is on 4th February at Las Colinas at a cost of 55 Euros First tee 1000 hours. Places are filling up fast for this, so get your name down quickly. We will be playing for the Helena and Paolo Trophy provided by our hosts at the La Marina Club . Our next social function is on 11th February , a Valentines Dance at the La Marina Club with a 2-course meal with music by Richie Alexander. Our first game of the New Year was a visit to Hacienda Riquelme. A cool but bright start to the day welcomed 34 players. The choice of game for the day was a dusty bin (3-2-1) with the addition of an individual stableford going towards points for player of the year. Also, players competing for the annual “ New Year Cup” trophy. Congratulations to Gordon Hutchinson and Aay Massingham our Players of the Year 2015. The course was in very good condition with fast running fairways and greens which were the cause of many 3 and 4 putts. This was reflected in the scores with not many players achieving 36 points.
