Tourists not planning to stay overnight in Barcelona could soon have to pay a tax to visit the city, a councillor announced this week. The city council of left-wing mayor Ada Colau is trying to find ways to increase its return on the millions of tourists who visit Barcelona each year even those who don’t spend the night in the Catalan capital. Barcelona councillor Gala Pin confirmed on Friday that the city was investigating a “tourist tax” that would apply to visitors who do not stay overnight in the city. The idea was first mooted in January when the council proposed that a ‘daytripper tax’ would help “share the benefits” of the tourist sector throughout the city and “offset the costs”. The tax would particularly apply to cruise passengers and those on organized tours, who tend to spend mere hours in the city before moving on. In the case of coaches, a road toll or increased fees for parking in the city could be a way to impose the tax, reported Spanish daily El País. Pin was speaking on Thursday morning during a presentation of a report on the economic impact of cruise ships on the city and its port. The report found that cruise ships generate a spend of €800 million per

year, adding €413 million to Catalonia’s GDP - €152 million in taxes and the rest in providing employment for 7,000 fulltime workers. But the taxes currently only apply to cruise ships that dock in Barcelona’s port for over 12 hours; boats that dock for less time pay nothing - something the city is keen to change. While concrete details of the plan have yet to be announced, councillors seem determined to offset the sometimes harmful impact tourism has on the city. Tourists are expensive for the city, Gala Pin said in January, “not only in terms of infrastructure, cleaning and security but also in terms of the floating population that is causing the indirect expulsion of local people...” A city break hotspot, Barcelona has in recent years, become steadily fed up with tourists, who have been causing various problems, form antisocial behaviour to pushing up rent prices, forcing locals out of the centre of the city. http://www.thelocal.es

NORTH KOREA HAS SENTENCED A US MAN TO 10 YEARS OF HARD LABOUR FOR SPYING
DEBRA SPAIN CELEBRATE 10 YEARS!!!
Kim Dong-chul, a 62-year-old naturalised US citizen born in South Korea, was arrested last October. Kim had made an apparent confession in Pyongyang last month in front of reporters, saying he was paid by South Korean intelligence officers. The US has previously accused North Korea of using its citizens as pawns in a diplomatic game. Pyongyang denies the accusations. At the time of Kim’s arrest, the US State Department had said it would not be commenting on the case as speaking publicly about detained Americans can complicate the process of getting them released. In March, US student Otto Frederick Warmbier was jailed for 15 years for stealing a propaganda sign and “crimes against the state”. North Korea has previously said Kim had a USB stick containing military and nuclear secrets on him when he was arrested in the special economic zone of Rason. Kim, who used to live in Virginia, had said he was introduced to South Korean spies by US intelligence officers. Forced public confessions by foreign prisoners are common in North Korea. Kim’s imprisonment comes amid a period of high tensions. North Korea has recently conducted a series of missile tests following its fourth nuclear test in January, both of which break UN sanctions. Pyongyang attempted to launch two mid-range ballistic missiles on Thursday which crashed shortly after their launches, prompting an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. It is believed it will attempt a fifth nuclear test soon. The recent burst in activity is thought to be a ramp-up to a rare party congress due to be held on 6 May, where leader Kim Jong-un is expected to consolidate power. Foreigners detained in North Korea Other recent cases include: Otto Frederick Warmbier, a US student who was sentenced to 15 years of hard labour in March 2016 for trying to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel and “crimes against the state”. Hyeon Soo Lim, a Canadian Christian pastor of South Korean origin, was sentenced to a life term of hard labour in December, also for “crimes against the state”. Sandra Suh, an American aid worker, was arrested then expelled in April 2015, accused of gathering and producing anti-North propaganda. Matthew Todd Miller was sentenced to six years’ hard labour in September 2014 for what North Korean state media described as “hostile acts”, but was released in November the same year. Kenneth Bae was arrested in November 2012 and accused of using his tourism business to form groups to overthrow the government. Sentenced to 15 years’ hard labour in May 2013 but was released along with Mr Miller. Jeffrey Fowle, held for five months and charged with “anti-state” crimes, was released in October 2014. Korean War veteran Merrill Newman, held in October 2013 on charges of “hostile acts”, was released in December the same year. Bbc.com
During the day there were Buck's Fizz and snacks for the customers. We had a sale on and A very large hamper was raffled which was won by Gill Harper from El Raso. The hamper raffle made €203.
A lovely bouquet of flowers was presented from all of the volunteers of the shop to Anne Wylie who has run the shop since its opening 10 years ago. ( 18th April 2006-18th April 2016 ). DEBRA UK was founded in 1978 by Phyllis Hilton. In 1963 her daughter Debra was born with Dystrophic EB, one of the most severe forms of EB or Butterfly Skin condition. At the time little was known about this condition and its medical management. For 15 years Phyllis successfully cared for Debra at home, against all odds. 1n 1978 another mother contacted Phyllis for advice. Nothing had changed in 15 years, it was at this point that Phyllis realised help was needed and thus started the world’s first EB patient support group. Sadly, soon after Debra passed away. DEBRA Spain was founded in Marbella by Nieves and Iñigo Ibarrondo. In 1988 their son, Iñigo, was born with EB or more commonly known here in Spain as butterfly skin because the child´s skin is as delicate as a butterfly´s wing. Unfortunately Nieves and Iñigo received no help from the public health system so they embarked on an adventure that was to lead to the creation and evolution of DEBRA Spain, the Butterfly Children Charity. Their initial point of contact was DEBRA UK. Here they found the help, support and advice necessary to care for Iñigo. Back in Spain the lack of state support remained very minimal. Nieves and Iñigo were left alone to provide the 24/7 care required to look after their butterfly child. In addition they were raising awareness and providing support to other families all over Spain. As awareness grew and more families became members of the charity, Nieves and Iñigo could not maintain the charity alone. The charity needed to expand. In 2003, the Aloha Golf Club chose the Butterfly Children Charity as the main benefactor of a yearly golf event: the Butterfly Children Charity Golf and Gala Dinner. This successfully raised sufficient funds to employ the
charity’s first ever specialised nurse. In 2006 the Butterfly Children Charity celebrated the opening of its first charity shop on the Costa Blanca in Pueblo Bravo followed 18 months later by another in La Marina. Today the charity is proud to have 10 shops across Spain. These shops contribute to over 60% of the funding needed to ensure the charity keeps supporting families through the work of 3 nurses, 2 social workers and a psychologist. DEBRA Spain, the Butterfly Children Charity as it stands today, is a product of enormous effort by fundraisers, the Charity Shops, the volunteers and generous sponsorship. Our mission is to keep growing so we can maintain the support for the butterfly children and their families and strive to find a cure for this complex condition. Until then if you would like to help DEBRA Spain, the Butterfly Children Charity, you can donate items such as clothes, books and furniture to one of our 2 charity shops, and you can become a volunteer or organise a fund raising event.

ROAMING CHARGES IN EU CUT BY 75%
MOBILE phone roaming charges have gone down again today (Saturday) as a prelude to being scrapped altogether throughout the European Union. Calls may no longer cost any more than five cents a minute before IVA, text messages two cents each and internet use a maximum of five cents per megabyte. This means the cost of mobile phone use in a different EU nation will be 75% cheaper than it is now. Roaming charges in the EU will be axed altogether on June 15, 2017. Whilst awaiting the end of roaming for Europe, the price reduction is a huge help for expats in Spain visiting the UK, or holiday home owners who
ort
use a British mobile phone during their Spanish breaks. This would change in the event of a Brexit, since with the UK no longer part of the EU, roaming charges at the full price would continue to apply to Spanish mobiles used in Britain or British ones in Spain. But unless and until a Brexit happens, British nationals who holiday in Europe or live there are looking forward to cheaper cross-border calls, texts and surfing. Mobile operators will be permitted to apply limits within the terms of a 'reasonable use policy' to prevent 'abuse of roaming', but this is likely to apply only to usage for 'other
May 2016
purposes aside from periodic trips', according to MEPs. The exact limits have not been defined, but for the average traveller, will probably still result in much lower prices. “It's not just about EU residents saving money, it's about breaking down barriers in the digital market,” said a report from the deputy president of the European Commission's home market division. Director-general for the European consumer board, Monique Goyens, said abolishing roaming charges was 'a logical step' in building a single digital market, since EU citizens 'do not understand why crossing a European border should imply higher telephone and internet costs'. The roaming charges plan also includes a move to streamline internet
'censorship', by ensuring freedom of access to web content in all member States 'without interference or discrimination', and forcing internet providers to 'treat all EU citizens and member nations equally'. Blocking or limiting net content will only be allowed in certain extreme situations, such as high web traffic or to prevent hacking. Quality control measures affecting all internet providers in the EU will ensure consumers get what they pay for, and will prevent companies from 'using commercial excuses' to justify 'what surfers can and cannot do', says European Commissioner for economy and digital society, Gunther Oettinger. thinkspain
IBIZA BANS DRINKING IN STREET… AND THAT INCLUDES WATER
This summer tourists in Ibiza risk dehydration or a fine under new measures that will see the drinking of all liquids banned from public areas. The bylaw is being considered by San Antonio (Sant Antoni), a seaside town on the west coast of the island, in a bid to clampdown on the booze culture that the resort has become infamous for. The measures, which have been presented to the council but have yet to receive the green light, will see fines of €750 imposed on tourists caught flouting the ban, even with a takeaway cup of coffee or bottle of water. “Given how difficult it is for police to differentiate between whether it is alcohol or a soft drink being consumed it is necessary to
adopt an outright ban,” explained Aida Alcaraz, a town councillor in San Antonio. “Obviously people will be allowed to consume drinks on the terraces of bars but they won’t be able to take the drinks off the premises,” she said. The downmarket resort on Ibiza has a reputation as a party spot among young package holidaymakers, particularly those from the UK. Last summer, officers from West Midlands Police were sent out to patrol the resort and that of Magaluf on the neighbouring Balaeric island of Mallorca in an attempt to prevent Brits behaving badly abroad. http://www.thelocal.es

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
I’m conscious that many folk find the Christian celebration of Christ’s resurrection on Easter day difficult to comprehend, but if that seems hard, then I’ll guess that his subsequent ascension, which we celebrate this year on Thursday, May 5th, may seem even more incredible. But for those of us who consider ourselves to be Christians, the resurrection and ascension of Jesus are two of the most vital and reassuring aspects of our faith. Indeed, without these there’s really little point in being Christian at all, for as St Paul wrote in his letter to the Church in Corinth “if Christ wasn’t raised from death, then your faith is for nothing, and those who’ve died are lost; so if our religion is only for this life, then we really are the most miserable folk on earth.” And it’s the conviction that Jesus rose and ascended that makes our faith so special, allowing us to affirm that death is not the end, but that life continues beyond the grave. For the Bible tells us that just 40 days after rising from the grave, Jesus was taken into heaven, in full view of his followers, whose lives as a result were changed beyond all
recognition. And if I as a Christian actually believe this, then it should have a pretty dramatic effect on me too. For Ascension Day, reminds us that not only did Christ overcome death by returning to life that Easter Day, after having been crucified and buried; but that he also returned to his Father to prepare for us, in due time to join him. Through his ascension Jesus confirms that death is not the end; that there is eternal purpose to our lives here on Earth, and that when this period of our existence comes to an end, then we can look forward to an eternity far more fantastic than anything we could ever dream of. So let’s really celebrate this day as one of the most important dates in the Christian Calendar!

LEGAL CORNER WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR
If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com - www.daviessolicitors.com MENTIONING A TRUST ON A SPANISH WILL IS ASKING FOR TROUBLE. SOMETIMES WHAT IS LEGALLY POSSIBLE AND WHAT IS PRACTICAL IS NOT THE SAME THING. THIS IS A GOOD EXAMPLE. Question: I had a Spanish will made for myself and my wife some time ago. We recently hired a solicitor to handle a conveyance and he has taken a look at the wills, which had been prepared two years ago, and told us they are no good and that we should make new ones. We are uncertain what to do. Our instructions to our original solicitor were to prepare the Spanish will in Spain exactly how we had prepared our English wills in UK. He said that since Directive 650/2012 this can be done. Answer: As my granny would always say: a little knowledge can cause a lot of damage. There is no doubt: the wills are dreadful and need to be changed. I doubt the person who prepared your will has ever dealt with probate in Spain. (I say this because any solicitor I know would tell you that your will is asking for trouble). The will essentially translates the English will you handed her and sets up a trust to protect your children versus your second wife. Even though Directive 650/2012 allows English law to be applied (by choice of the testator)
to how an estate is distributed in Spain, using institutions like trusts will cause endless problems and expenses for your heirs because Trusts are not understood in Spain the same way as in UK. So Certifications of English law (which are very expensive) will be required to help wind up the estate (by explaining the content of English law). To this add a lot of problems with Spanish Inheritance tax (remember Directive 650/2012 has no effect on the taxation of the estate). In Spain it is the beneficiary that pays inheritance tax not the estate. Descendants and spouse in Andalucía are exempt if they each receive less than 175,000€. In this case the trustee is a non-family member. As he has faculty to dispose of assets, the Spanish tax office could interpret that, as he is in control of the estate, he is the person that owes the tax and as a non-family member he will receive a large tax bill. (This could all be battled out but would be messy.) Conclusion: Keep things sensible and uncomplicated. In this case achieve what you want using methods that are common practice in Spain. Leave the life possession of your property to your wife and the residual value to your children. With the values you have sent me the estate will be exempt, probate will be simple and both your children and your wife will be fully protected as you asked for.

HELLO, SNEEZE SEASON Another year, another allergy season. If you suffer from springtime sneezing, itchy eyes, and nasal congestion—all symptoms of allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever—you may be dreading the next few months as trees and flowers bloom and release pollen, one of the most common allergens. You also probably know some
tricks for minimizing your exposure to airborne irritants, like keeping your home vacuumed and dusted, and staying indoors on high-pollen days. But those strategies may not be as effective as you think: Pollen and other allergy triggers may be hiding in places in and around your home you’d never realize. Watch out for scare tactics. Admonitions like 'I wouldn't drive this another mile' should be viewed with suspicion.
Ask, ask, ask ...for recommendations, years in business, warranties offered, licences, and the type of equipment used. Look for a clean garage. A floor cluttered with empty oil cans, worn tires, and dirty rags is a red flag.
Never sign a blank authorisation form. Always get a signed work order with a specific estimate for each job and warranties that apply.
It’s nuts to take a car with engine problems to a shop without a good engine analyser and scan tool. Any mechanic who says ‘I don’t need fancy equipment’ should be avoided.
Synthetic motor oils may cost more... ...but you’ll get a lot more miles between changes.
When you go for a second opinion... ...don’t tell the mechanic what the first diagnosis and price were.
Coolant flushes and power steering flushes... ...are very common gimmicks at quick lubes. Check your owner’s manual; many cars have fluid that is designed to go 100,000 miles. And cleaning fuel injectors is a waste of time and money. There are additives on the market that do a great job.
Ask about your new tire’s ‘build date.’ If you’re getting an unusually good deal, you might be receiving three-year-old treads, especially risky for snow tires.

14. Don’t be duped by double labour. “If a mechanic offers to change your timing belt and water pump, question how long the job will take. Some will charge you double labour even though the second task is essentially done once the belt is removed.”
Always ask for your old parts back. “This way you’ll know they’ve been changed, and you or a friend can tell if they’re worn.”
Be careful with “road hazard” warranties on tyres. “The shops may give you a free tyre here and there, but eventually they will soak you with unnecessary alignments or suspension replacements.” http://www.rd.com

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout

keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. SPAIN BREAKS ITS OWN RECORD FOR JOBLESSNESS OF OVER 20%
Spain has just broken one of its more dubious records. The latest statistics show that the country has endured a jobless rate of over 20% for 66 straight months, or five-and-a-half years. The previous record – of five years and three months – was set not so long ago, in the mid 1990s. The most recent quarterly figures, released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), show persistent joblessness, despite the fact that the job market has actually been recovering for nearly two years. Even as the economy continues to grow, the outgoing crisis is still leaving a few negative milestones behind. Between the time that employment began to flag in 2007 and the moment it hit rock bottom in early 2014, one out of every five jobs in Spain was axed, representing nearly four million positions. In early 2013, the jobless rate had soared to around 27%. From January to March of that year, there were more than 6.2 million people without a job. A better big picture The labor survey released by INE on Thursday is not bad in its overall figures. While jobless claims grew and employment fell, the first quarter of the year is always bad for jobs. And the larger trend points to a recovery. The 18 million jobs or so registered in the first quarter of 2016 represent an annual increase of 3.3%, the fastest pace recorded in years. And the 4.8 million unemployed represent a drop of 12%. Seasonally adjusted figures also show that the activity rate grew 0.87% in the first quarter. Unproductive jobs But the economist José Ignacio Conde-Ruiz notes that “if job creation picks up, as it is doing, while the economy slows down, that proves that the
productivity of the jobs being created is very low. They are bad jobs. The model is headed to what it always has been.” The evolution of temporary work in the last year appears to confirm this statement. In the last 13 months, there was a 10% increase in the number of temporary workers, from 3.4 million up to 3.7 million. The temporary employment rate is now 25%, nearly 1.5 percentage points higher than in the same period last year. Seasonal work has always been the classic way out of labor crises in Spain, and this time is no exception. But the fact that it remains so strong two years later shows that entrepreneurs are still not confident enough about the future to hire permanent workers. And there are other indicators that speak eloquently about the situation. Between January and March, there were 719,100 households without any kind of income, and 1,610,900 households where no member of the family had a job. Elpais.com

FOREIGN HOME BUYERS ACCOUNTED FOR 13.2% OF TRANSACTIONS IN 2015
Homes purchased in Spain by families accounted for 87.3% of all transactions in 2015, increasing from 84.7% in 2014, and 78.1% in 2013. In contrast, housing market transactions made by companies continue to decline, to 12.7% of all transactions in 2015, compared to 15.3% in 2014 and 21.9% in 2013, although they still far exceed the volume of transactions of 2007 (5.1%). This data comes from the Association of Registrars’ Real Estate Statistics Yearbook for 2015, which also shows that the distribution of the housing transactions carried out by individuals and legal entities is not uniform throughout the country. According to the Registrars’ press release, the Canary Islands, Murcia and Catalonia are the regions where companies have a greater weight in the housing transactions, while individuals accounted for more transactions in the Basque Country, Extremadura, La Rioja and Asturias. The importance of foreign buyers in the housing market is highlighted
in the report, with their housing acquisitions accounting for 13.2% of all transactions in 2015, representing the seventh consecutive year of growth since the 4.2% of transactions registered in 2009, which marked their lowest point. By region, the most popular touristic areas are attracting the majority of foreign home buyers: 35.6% of the total sales carried out in the Balearic Islands were by foreign buyers, followed by the Canary Islands (28.1%) and Valencia (26.4%). In contrast, the regions with least foreign presence with regard to housing transactions, are Galicia (0.6%), Extremadura (0.8%) and Castilla y León(1.4%). After the recent legislative reforms enabling the granting of residence permits to foreigners carrying out one or more real estate transactions up to a value equal to or exceeding 500,000 euros, the Registrars point out that these high-value housing transactions made up 5.2% of all the purchases made by foreign buyers last year, similar to 2014
and an increase from the 4.7% of transactions made in 2013. Of these transactions, 62% were made by EU citizens and the remaining 38% were made by non-EU citizens (down from 44.9% in 2014). With
regard to regions, the report again highlighted the Balearic Islands, which accounted for 16% of the transactions above 500,000 euros. kyero.com

HOME MORTGAGE LOANS ROSE BY 24.3% IN 2015 Data for the end of 2015 confirm that the housing sector in Spain is continuing on the path of stabilisation and normalisation after the hard years of the economic crisis, reports idealista. com. Mortgage loans for the purchase of a home increased by 24.3% year-on-year at the end of 2015, accumulating two consecutive years of increases, following a three-year period when access to bank funding had been severely restricted. All of Spain’s regions registered double digit increases, especially the Balearic Islands (+41.8%) and Cantabria (+33.0%), while below the national average stood Navarra (+13.5%) and Madrid (+20.1%). Moreover, the average mortgage value increased by 7.9%, year-on-year, to 126,950 euros. Home sales in Spain achieved an average increase of 9.2% year-on-year in 2015, although this rate varied over the regions, according to a report published by the General Council of Notaries. All regions registered increases, except for CastillaLa Mancha, which recorded a decline of 1%. The regions which registered the greatest increases in housing transactions were the Basque Country (+17%), the Balearic Islands (+16.5%), Valencia and Catalonia (both +10.4%), while Madrid did not exceed the national average and registered an increase of just 6.4%. Ending a seven year negative streak prices climbed by 1.8% on average, to stand at 1,278 euros/m2. The greatest increases were registered in the Balearic Islands (+4.8%), the Canary Islands (+3.9%), La Rioja and Valencia (both +3.6%), while declines were registered in six regions, lead by Navarra (-16.2%), Castilla-La Mancha (-8.1%) and Aragón (-7.5%). With average prices higher than the national average were the Basque Country (2,126 euros/ m2), the Balearic Islands (2,076 euros), Madrid (1,812 euros) and Catalonia (1,516 euros). These regions together represent 37% of the total sales. https://news.kyero.com
REAL ESTATE VALUATIONS GREW BY 28.6% Y-O-Y IN 2015
In a press release published last week by the Spanish Property Appraisals Association (AEV), the organisation revealed that in 2015, some 872,480 real estate appraisals were carried out in Spain during the year, amounting to a value of 313,932 million euros, which represents an increase of 28.6% over 2014. The AEV also announced their positive results for 2015 which amounted to a turnover of 221.4 million euros, which is 8% more than the figure for 2014, and represents the second consecutive year of increases. A total of 461,131 valuations were conducted on homes, with the number of these being for mortgage purposes (457,569) registering an increase of 19.7% over 2014. The AEV also stated that the value of these appraisals increased by 25% over the same period of the previous year. Secretary General of the AEV, José Manuel Gómez
de Miguel, stated: “these two years of positive data show that we have passed the turning point for appraisal activity in our country, which, as many other indicators have also shown, can be extended to real estate sector activity as a whole and also to mortgage lending activity. The data also alludes to the flexibility and adaptability of the large, medium or small companies that integrate the different areas of the sector”. The 23 valuation societies, which form the AEV and together represent around 90% of the valuations sector in Spain, carried out a further 5 million statistical or other types of analyses during the year, which contributed significantly to the increase in turnover. //news.kyero.com

PROPERTY IN SPAIN
A GUIDE TO BUYING PROPERTY IN SPAIN
Foreigners buying property in Spain has become very popular. The country has a pleasant, healthy climate and in recent years the local authorities have made great efforts to increase the number foreign tourists and residents. Spain now derives more of its foreign income from tourists than any other country in Europe. Due to low European interest rates, now is a good time to buy property in Spain. There is a very wide selection of standards, from farmhouses (fincas) and plots through to villas, townhouses and new apartment developments. There is no shortage of real estate agents in Spain and it pays to search out a good company who will care for your requirements. Before you buy a property in Spain you should use our website to look at the different areas then consider visiting your favourites before deciding where to buy. Many people also rent a property in that area first. Here’s a simple guide to get the most out of buying a property in Spain: 1. Set your budget limit and stick to it. 2. Visit the property at least twice before you make a decision. 3. Check what amenities the property has such as electricity, water, gas. 4. Have a builder or architect examine the structure of the building. 5. Talk to your prospective neighbours about the area. 6. If you are unsure about a property, take photos and draw sketches to take home with you. 7. Have your legal advisor check ownership of the property before you sign anything. 8. Have your legal advisor check outstanding debts on the property before you sign anything . Initial costs of buying a property in Spain As well as the cost of the property, the buyer will be liable for transfer tax (IVA), which at present is 6% on a second-hand property and 7% on a new one, plus 1/2% stamp duty. The property registration office will charge you a fee to change the new deeds into your name. This is usually around 300€. There will also be notary charges for copies of the ‘escritura publica’. The charge is on a scale depending on the contract price. In total you should allow 10% of the purchase price for costs. It is often the case that the buyer also pays the sellers fees. Check this at the point of enquiry and it is often possible to negotiate. Banks may also charge an opening commission for mortgage loans. Annual Costs of owning a property in Spain The local town hall charge IBI which is an annual real estate tax. The previous owner is obliged to give you copies of previous bills. Community charges apply when you buy a property on a community development. These cover things like maintenance, swimming pools, gardens etc. You will also be liable for a wealth tax, payable annually and based on the value of the property and
a property owners income taxes based on your income from the property. You should clarify these in detail with your estate agent at point of enquiry. Many developers of new properties are now offering up to 80% over 20 years for non-residents. Local banks will offer anything up to 60% for European residents. Most loans are long-term and secured on the property. When seeking a loan, make sure you are aware of the interest rates and if they are fixed or floating. Banks will ask for passports, residence permits, payslips, sale contracts and copies of the title deeds. There are many advantages to taking out a loan to purchase your property, in the form of tax allowances. We have not listed them here as they are subject to fluctuation. You may need to transfer money into Spain and you need to protect yourself: When you buy a property in Spain, you will know the price of the property in Euros but you will not know the actual cost until you buy all of the currency to pay for it. This means that the property could either cost you more than you had planned (if the Euro strengthens) or the property could become cheaper (if Sterling strengthens). Recently Sterling has fluctuated more than 10% against the Euro within a matter of months, so this does deserve careful consideration. On the basis that you are buying a property and not speculating on the currency markets, it is worth fixing the exchange rate for all of your future stage payments to the agent or developer. How to fix the exchange rate: 1/ Buy all of the currency now on a “spot contract”. Hold the currency on deposit and send payments when they are due from your Euro account. To do this you need to have full funds available. 2/ Buy as much currency as you can afford now (e.g. for the first 2 payments) and reserve an exchange rate for the remaining payments. To reserve an exchange rate you need to buy a ‘forward currency contract’. In effect you are buying currency now but paying at a later date when you have the funds available. The exchange rate that you achieve on a “forward contract” is not quite as good as that for a “spot contract” but it does guarantee that you know the cost of the property. You will be required to pay 10% of the value immediately and the balance by the date that you have reserved the currency for. Getting your money into Spain without massive bank charges and poor exchange rates Use a specialist currency broker: As a result of extensive research Idealspain are pleased to offer preferential currency transfer rates for all their clients and visitors, click here for more information. It is also advisable to speak to your new bank with regards to High Interest Sterling Accounts where your mortgage payments can be taken directly and converted on your behalf. http://www.idealspain.com

feet in the housing market, with the average house price increasing by 306% over the past 20 years. And while the average first-time buyer’s income has also increased over this period (by 159%), a typical property is now worth as much as 5.51 times as much as this. Meanwhile, Southampton, less than 70 miles further along the coast, is one of the most affordable spots for first-time buyers, where properties cost an average of £183,443. The Priced Out report explores affordability Aof properties across the UK for first-time buyers, and how this has changed over the past 20 years in 14 of the UK’s largest cities. John Willcock, head of mortgages at Post Office Money, said: “These figures highlight the challenges facing today’s first-time buyers. Cities such as Brighton are becoming unaffordable blackspots for those looking to get on the ladder, with average property prices far beyond the typical budget. The London property market has always been more challenging for new buyers to break into, which is why many instead turned to surrounding areas within a commutable distance – which in turn are becoming increasingly unaffordable. “Many would-be buyers are having to compromise on their housing needs in order to take that all-important first step onto the ladder. For some, this is a case of prioritising what is really essential in a home, but for others this means significant changes to their lifestyle, moving Prompt and reliable service, further away from work, no job too small. family and friends. Rising house prices are making it virtually impossible first-time buyers to get on the housing ladder, with some cities becoming “unaffordable blackspots”, a new study has revealed. According to Post Office Money Mortgages, a third (36%) of homes in the UK – equivalent to 5.5 million properties – are now in areas where the average home is unaffordable for first-time buyers. This is a trend that is getting worse, with hundreds of neighbourhoods falling out of reach over the past 20 years. Brighton was found to be the most unaffordable city in the study, with only 9% of properties in the city within reach of those looking to get a foot on the property ladder, compared to 100% in 1995. Homes in the city have increased in value by 463% over the past 20 years and now stand at an average of £305,149. Although London has a higher proportion of neighbourhoods where the average home is affordable to first-time buyers than some other cities, they still face the biggest leap to reach the first rung of the ladder, with the average property in the capital reaching almost half a million pounds (£498,174) – or the equivalent of 6.41 times their income. It is little wonder that first-time buyers are struggling to find their

VIEWPOINT
THE CUNNING PLAN discretion to evacuate the Village during
To say that the Alquerian Parliament was a hotbed of intellectual excellence would be somewhat of an overstatement. Indeed the collective wisdom of the whole village is rather like a forty watt bulb, when glowing at its best the room gets darker. They had however surpassed themselves this time. Alqueria was going to war. The cunning plan involves declaring war on Spain, losing and letting Spain rebuild Alqueria, investing millions in its reconstruction. A latter day ‘Marshall Plan’. To the casual observer this strategy may seem rather risky but the state of the Alquerian economy demanded desperate action. Spain had long since closed its borders with Alqueria, fearing the dysfunctionality of its inhabitants may be contagious. They only way an Alquerian could get a visas was to pass straight through Spain and not touch anything on the way. The border closure issue was just the excuse needed. A telephone call was made to the Palace of Monaco in Madrid expressing Alquerian outrage at the closure of its borders. Unfortunately ‘expressing outrage’ wasn’t one of the numbered options of the automatic answering system, the nearest was “Press two if you are the Catalan President requiring independence”. A letter was sent instead. Intelligence isn’t the only Alquerian attribute in short supply, courage is also conspicuous by its absence in the collective breast. It was decided in the interest of
hostilities. The entire population took to the road disguised as a touring Abyssinian Goat Shirling extravaganza. Loco Paco was left behind however and told to ‘hold the fort’, he spent the next two weeks looking for a suitable fort to hold.
The plan appeared to work well with the Spanish Army invading after the Air Force dropped a couple of bombs which resulted in two thousand Euros worth of improvements. All seemed to be going remarkably well, a plan for the rebuilding of Alqueria was discussed, agreed and duly signed. But it was all going too well. When it came to actually transferring the cash needed for the restoration it was discovered that some enterprising Spanish politician had purloined the funds and diverted them to a certain central American country with a canal running through it. They say that ‘The Devil looks after his own’ and this held true. The bombing had destroyed the drainage system of Alqueria which leaked its foul smelling contents into the Alquerian earth producing the conditions ideal for the maturing of the Remitroot crop. The result was a bumper harvest, full Alquerian coffers and the drunks of the Pueblo could once more drink themselves into insensibility.
SECOND HAND ROSE
Since my unpremeditated encounter with the ground Pete has to do all the cooking, even the cooking that does not require cooking, like buttering bread. He has to cut my food into bite-sized pieces, so that I can manage to eat it with just a fork, like an American. He also has to attend to most of the housework – though I can manage a little ladylike dusting. And as for washing and dressing! I disappear into the bathroom and re-emerge half a lifetime later with the plaintive words ‘Pete, can you help me put my bra on, please?’ He maintains that he has never had a problem taking it off, but finds putting it on an altogether different matter! However, although we manage to overcome all these daily tribulations with a bit of ingenuity, the one that exercises my mind the most is the daily problem of ‘what to wear.’ I have a more than sufficient supply of clothing suitable for every occasion – except the occasion of having one functioning arm and one plaster monstrosity with an oversize and completely inflexible wrist. Starting at the bottom: Socks have to be baggy enough to allow me to heave them up my leg one-handed; socks that fit need 2 hands. Solution – wear Pete’s baggy socks. I have to wear pull-up trousers, like a small child who has recently achieved toilet independence – So I wear Pete’s track bottoms. Why? Have you ever tried doing up a trouser zip one-handed? What to wear on top? All my tops fit, therefore my gigantic arm will

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk not go down the sleeve. Once again, it is Pete’s fleeces, or Pete’s jumpers, with their wide arms and comfort fit’ that come to my rescue. Should it be cold enough for a coat, it will be Pete’s dog-walking coat that is my only option. Thus I walk the streets of Albox like an unfortunate Second Hand Rose, looking as if I am wearing clothes that have been handed down to me by my older brother. The first time we jointly attempted to put on my wig, Creamy Toffee, we ended up with a lop-sided haystack that would have lost a fashion contest to Wurzel Gummidge! But we’re getting good at it now, we can get it on and straightened in a trice. But at least it is new, not second hand! FOOD & ENTERTAINING... NEW POTATO AND CHORIZO TORTILLA INGREDIENTS 400g Jersey Royal potatoes, quartered 1 onion, diced 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 3 tbsp olive oil 2 bay leaves 1 thyme sprig 1 rosemary sprig Pinch Espelette pepper or smoked paprika Pinch sea salt 120g chorizo, cut into small dice 15g flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 80g spinach, chopped 8 eggs, whisked
Serves 4-6 Preparation time 10 min, cooking time 35 min Raymond Blanc’s tortilla recipe uses jersey royal potatoes, which are available during the spring months, but these can be substituted for another non-floury potato at any other time of the year
METHOD 01. Preheat the oven to 170ºC/Gas Mark 3½. In a medium sauté pan with a lid, over a medium heat, sweat the potatoes, onion and garlic in the oil with the bay leaf, thyme, rosemary, Espelette pepper or smoked paprika and salt for 13–15 minutes. Stir regularly to avoid any colouring. 02. Add the chorizo and continue to sweat for 5 minutes with the lid on so the flavours mingle. Finally, add the parsley and spinach and stir them into the vegetables for 30 seconds, then remove from the heat, add the eggs and stir everything together until evenly mixed. 03. Pour the egg mixture into a 20cm non-stick ovenproof frying pan and place in the oven for 15 minutes. Once cooked, remove from the oven and leave to rest for 5 minutes before turning out on to a board or a large serving dish. Using a serrated knife, cut the omelette into 4–6 wedge-shaped slices and serve warm. deliciousmagazine.co.uk

STRIKE A LIGHT! IT'S ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL FUND-RAISER FOR TORREVIEJA STROKE SUPPORT Revellers enjoyed yet another successful charity night at Restaurante El Alto La Dolores in Guardamar. Cassi Kennedy provided the entertainment, and diners 'dug deep', as they always do at these fundraisers, so that their generosity made it possible to donate 877 euros – much needed funds, to this very worthwhile charity. Paul Owen, Treasurer for Torrevieja Stroke Support, said that the money will go towards essential rehabilitation and physio-therapy equipment. The next charity night is on Friday, 13th May. An unlucky date for some, but not for San Fulgencio Alzheimers Association, who will be the beneficiaries on this occasion. The ever popular, WOODY, will be on stage again, so it's bound to be another sell out. Get your tickets quickly, as we always have to turn people away. These are available from the Restaurant itself, The Card Place in Benimar and REDZ cafe bar in Quesada.

MUSICAL PERFORMANCES
The Barracudas are conceived in the late 70 in London with members of Canada and England taking its current base in U.K. Influenced by bands of rock and roll and sixties garage as The Seeds or The Standells, where they would take the name of the band, in the 80 jump to world fame. STUDIO32 “FIDDLER THE ROOF”
ON
It’s only four weeks to go until STUDIO32’s production of “Fiddler On The Roof” goes on and tickets are selling fast - so hurry up and book your seats for a great night’s entertainment, as we have very limited availability for some performances. The show includes many well-known songs – “If I Were A Rich Man” and “Sunrise Sunset” to name two - as well as a fascinating storyline of humour, sadness and family life. The role of Mendel the Rabbi’s son is being played by Nick Morgan, pictured here alongside the Rabbi played by Ted Williams. Nick is an experienced actor, singer and dancer who has only recently joined Studio32, having just moved to Spain. The Rabbi is an important person in the village community of Anatevka, and he features in many small scenes throughout the show, advising Tevye on “what the good book says” and helping to preserve the traditions of their Jewish community. This year the company are once again supporting the Alzheimer’s society, and profits will be donated to AFA San Fulgencio and other local charities. Show dates are Wednesday June 1st to Saturday June 4th at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio, all performances start at 7.30pm with doors open 7pm. TOBY TOBY is just one year old, Medium sized boy of 12 kgs, castrated, vaccinated, healthy and fun. He is very sociable with all the dogs and would make a great family pet.
When lovely Billy and Bobby were rescued by APAH as tiny puppies, they sadly weren’t offered loving homes. Now they are 4 years old and still living in kennels. They are big softies, and the only reason they have never been adopted is their size. If you are looking for a large dog, they would be just the dogs for you. To arrange to meet the brothers

WHEN THE MGA ARRIVED IN 1955, IT MUST HAVE COME AS QUITE A SHOCK TO MG AFICIONADOS WHO HAD BECOME USED TO THE PRE-WAR LOOK OF THE COMPANY’S SPORTS CARS. EVEN THE REVAMPED TF LEFT NOTHING TO DOUBT ABOUT ITS 1930’S-STYLE DESIGN. THE MGA WAS A COMPLETE DEPARTURE IN STYLING FOR MG. Its beautiful streamlined body was right up to the minute in terms of appearance, and it was powered by a new engine, as MG had decided that the old XPAG unit had had its day. The MGA was powered by the much more modern B-series engine that had made its debut in the recently announced Magnette saloon. MG enthusiasts had been given a hint of what was to come as early as 1951 when George Phillips drove a re-bodied TD Midget in the Le-Mans 24 hour endurance race. The car had been built for him by MG following his successes with his own TC, which had been fitted with a lightweight two-seat race car style body. So different was the appearance of his new TD racer, that it must have been difficult to believe that it was actually a venerable TD Midget underneath! It was a road-going version of the Phillips car which had been proposed to BMC in 1952 as a replacement for the TD Midget, but which had been turned down because of the corporation’s

decision to build the AustinHealey 100. MG had gone as far as building a full prototype of the MGA by using TD running gear, the 1250 XPAG engine, a re-designed chassis, and the MGA bodywork. When it eventually became clear that the TF Midget was a bit of a lame duck and that it would have to be replaced, the new MG sports car was finally given the chance it deserved. The delay in production had one advantage in that it allowed MG to refine the design and install the much newer 1489cc four cylinder B-series engine and its transmission from the Magnette saloon. Before the official launch of the MGA in 1955, three aluminium bodied prototypes of the new sports car, coded EX182, were entered into Le Mans. Fortunately for MG, they acquitted themselves well, finishing fifth and sixth in their class. Thus, when the MGA was finally announced shortly after this, the car already had a competition background as testimony to its pedigree. No doubt this did much to ensure its acceptance by enthusiasts who were reluctant to say goodbye to the old fashioned traditional looks of the MG.

MERCEDES-BENZ GLS 350 D
The Mercedes GLS is a leviathan of the road – it’s longer than even the Audi Q7 – and is a facelifted and revised version of the car maker’s GL. andybulletvan@gmail.com Offering seven seats, the GLS is designed for larger families who want to travel in style and comfort. Using a cleaner version of the 3.0-litre diesel V6 that featured in the GL, the GLS should be able to keep up 658 109 849 with rivals in terms of performance and economy. Has it? AOL Cars Service parts finds out. included from 80€ What is it? All brakes with labour The GLS is a two-and-a-bit tonne seven-seater SUV, designed to whisk from 170€ its occupants quietly and smartly from location to location. Provided RHD to LHD light conversions the driver can find a parking space big enough, that is. Replacing the old GL, this latest model is designed to be better on from 100€ fuel, better at interior quality and better on the environment, too. Accident repairs What’s under the bonnet? free collection or repairs Our test car was 350d, meaning that under the bonnet sits a 3.0-litre at yours turbodiesel V6, producing 255bhp and 620Nm of torque. through a nine-speed automatic gearbox, the GLS is good for 62mph in a respectable 7.8 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 138. Combined, Mercedes claims that it will return 37.2mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions aren’t great at 261g/Km, but then it’s a big, heavy car. That nine-speed automatic gearbox is there to be as smooth as possible, and gears are selected through a steering wheel-mounted shifter. It’s a smooth engine – though the same one as featured on the older GL350 CDI – and suits the character of the car well. Air suspension was also fitted to our car, giving drivers the ability to change the GLS’ ride height. It also has all manner of off-road functions, meaning that if wannabe off-roaders want to test the car’s four-wheel-drive system to the limit, they can.. http://cars.aol.co.uk/

“I was a student. It was early in the morning, I was crossing a parking lot to get to the college library, listening to…this man ran up asking for help, his dog was having a fit and he thought it might be dying…” It sounds innocent enough doesn’t it? What followed was a shocking account of a young woman’s abduction, an innocent victim who lost seven good years of her life locked up like an animal by a monster who wanted to control women and gratify his sexual desires. A pervert. Too many disturbed guys preying on women. Ma and 5 year old Jack were incarcerated in a 11 by 11 Room which was in a soundproofed garden shed in the backyard of Old Nick who “stole” her. She was kidnapped when she was a 19 year old student and imprisoned for seven years. It could have been longer. The story begins with Jack celebrating his fifth birthday. He was born on the Rug on the floor. A stain is clearly visible after all this time. Very symbolic. His present is a picture of himself drawn by his Ma whilst he was sleeping. He believes that the Room and everything it contains are real and that the rest of the world exists on television. Outside Room he believes it is outer space. He also thinks that he came down from heaven. Jack narrates the story and we are soon made aware of his confusion over the truth of Outside as opposed to being trapped inside Room. Donoghue based her story on the Fritzi case which came to light in April 2008 in Amstetten in Austria. It is inconceivable to think that a father would abduct his daughter, sexually abuse her and imprison her in the basement of the family home for 24 years. She had eight children, one of them died. Three of them Kerstin, Stefan and Felix, who was only five like Jack, remained in the basement with Elisabeth their mother. They were eventually discovered when Kerstin had to be taken to hospital. Like Old Nick, Josef punished his family by shutting off their lights or refusing to deliver food for days at a time. He threatened them that if they tried to escape he would gas them. He admitted to giving them an electric shock if they meddled with the cellar door. Shocking. “Room” is a difficult read for anyone but it’s a story that needs telling in spite of its bleakness. The film starring Brie Larson, who won an Oscar for her role, has encouraged sales of the book most recently. Time Out referred to the film as being “too grim and heartbreaking for some viewers.” Room “ is nevertheless an extraordinary film so powerful and unforgettable that it must be seen.” And the book needs to be read. Old Nick is almost double Ma’s age and visits Room after 9.0.p.m. for sexual gratification. “He’s not human like us. He only happens in the night, like bats.” Jack has to be hidden, wrapped in Rug and stowed away in Wardrobe, like an item of clothing rather than a little boy. Old Nick plays with Ma’s head driving her crazy. When he gets angry with her he strikes her and leaves them without any electricity. One time they have to survive without any power for three days. “He thinks we’re things that belong to him, because room does.” On such days they have to eat raw vegetables or a cold mushy bagel. They have their rituals to create a sense of normality. Mondays is laundry day when they get into the bath wearing their socks, underwear, sheets and dishtowels then squish all the dirt out. Tuesday is a cleaning day, Thursday another laundry day and on Fridays the mattress is flipped over. The rest of the time they watch tv or play inventive games or read. Anything to retain some level of sanity and normality. As the story develops, Ma tries to explain to Jack that life exists outside of Room. She tells him she was adopted and she has a brother called Paul and parents. Jack thought she lived in a house on television. How else could he understand life in such a limited world as

his inside Room? He thinks Ma is trying to trick him. “We’re like people in a book, and he won’t let anybody read it. Attempts to escape during the first eighteen months of captivity were futile. Ma would throw things at the skylight, objects such as big saucepans, chairs, even the trash container but the glass was so reinforced, completely unbreakable that the glass didn’t even crack. Digging a hole also proved unsuccessful when she discovered a chain link fence beneath the floor. Out of desperation she took the lid off the toilet seat and smashed it down over Old Nick’s head but it wasn’t a hard enough thrust. She pressed a knife against his throat demanding to know the code on the door but he easily overpowered her and broke her wrist. He then threatened her that if she ever pulled a stunt like that again he’d go away forever and let her starve to death. When it proves too much for Ma who has days when according to Jack, she is Gone, incapable of getting out of bed, semi-conscious she plans the Great Escape, hoping to trick the ogre into releasing Jack under the pretence of serious illness and being in need of urgent emergency care. Jack’s alleged fever doesn’t fully convince him so Plan A is abandoned for Plan B, something more daring and dangerous. “Remember how they crawled through the dark tunnel away from the Nazis? One at a time. That’s how we’ll do it, when you’re ready.” Ma reminds Jack of the Count of Monte Cristo who was disguised as dead. Jack would be wrapped up in his rug: “When Old Nick comes back I’m going to tell him you died. I’m going to show him the rug all rolled up with you inside it.” Ma goes through the plan over and over with Jack: Dead, Truck, Run, Police, Save Ma. It will prove to be the most frightening experience in Jack’s life so far. “Stay stiff, stiff, stiff like a robot.” “I’m so scared I can’t be brave, stop stop stop but I can’t make a sound or he’ll guess the trick and he’ll eat me head first, he’ll rip off my legs.” The escape is full of tension and builds to a climax when everything goes wrong, when Old Nick realises he has been duped. Ma is left in Room awaiting her fate whilst Jack, pretending to be dead is risking his life in an attempt to save her. Read on, it gets better and better but I don’t want to spoil it for you. Then watch the film! Publisher: Picador. ISBN: 9-781-509-803-156. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor.

CARRYING ANIMALS IN CARS
N332 - Driving In Spain
Advice and information about driving in Spain.
“Can you please give me up to date Law information regarding transporting dogs in cars are they allowed on the back seat”.
Animals are permitted in private vehicles, but must be properly restrained using appropriate harnesses or equipment, and so the answer is yes, they are allowed on the back seat, but only if they are secured. As we look at the law, it clearly says that having an animal in the vehicle that could interfere with the driver is illegal and can result in a fine, so a dog sat loose on the front seat for example is not allowed. Carrying animals which are not properly restrained is dangerous to them too. The same applies for cases, cages and boxes with the animal inside, they too must be properly secured.
Animals are unpredictable, especially in environments they are unsure of or not used to. If loose, they could interfere with the driver´s ability or visibility. In the event of a crash, the animal would suffer considerable injury and, most likely, death. There are a wide range of security devices available for animals, from boxes and cages, which must also be secured as mentioned, to harnesses which link to the security elements of the vehicle, some adapting the existing seatbelts, others using security points designed for child seats for example. It is not just appropriate to have your dog attempt to wear the seatbelt designed for human passengers, only the appropriate device for them. Incidentally, if you are found to have an animal loose in the vehicle, there is an 80 euro fine. http://n332.es
FIVE KILLED IN LORCA MOTORWAY CRASH
Five people have been killed and another three injured in a road traffic incident on the Lorca-Águilas motorway on Tuesday morning. The 112 emergency coordination centre received a call at 07:19 reporting that a vehicle had left the road and fallen down an embankment at a bridge. The caller indicated that people were trapped inside the vehicle and suffering varying degrees of serious injuries. Fire fighters, medics and the Guardia Civil all rushed to the scene and found
the vehicle with eight occupants, five of whom having apparently lost their lives in the impact. The occupants were extracted from the vehicles where medical staff were able to confirm the deaths and treat the remaining three, one of whom was in a serious condition, the other two having suffered minor injuries. The injured parties were taken to Rafael Méndez hospital in Lorca for continual treatment.
MCLAREN'S CONFIRMS NEW £154,000 GRAND TOURER WILL MAKE ITS UK DEBUT NEXT WEEK AT BATTERSEA PARK
After we saw it in all of its glory at Geneva this year, McLaren has revealed the new 570GT's UK debut will take place at next week's London Motor Show. The 570GT is the Woking-based firm's latest addition to its Sport Series range - which boasts more overall boot space than some family hatchbacks. It's been designed to usurp Porsche's position as the ultimate maker of practical sports cars. Priced from £154,000, the GT is billed as the most usable and luxurious McLaren ever made. It will sit alongside the more focused 540C and 570S Coupe in the range. The transformation from Coupe to GT is most evident from the outside. The carbon fibre rear deck and flying buttresses from the Coupe have been replaced by a P1inspired convex glass rear end. A side-hinged glass hatch opens to reveal a new leatherlined luggage Touring Deck that offers 220 litres of space on top of the 150-litre storage area in the nose. Combined, the car’s boot volume is more than you’ll find in a Ford Focus hatchback. The GT also wears a unique rear spoiler, which is 10mm taller than that on any other Sport Series model. Changes continue inside with a full leather upholstery, electrically adjustable heated seats and steering column and soft-close doors. McLaren has also fitted a quieter exhaust system to aid refinement. The glass rear deck cover and the standard-fit panoramic glass roof combine to offer a surprisingly airy and roomy feel http://www.autoexpress.co.uk

Over the Easter period and last week Costa Cobras RFC have been in contact with certain teams in the UK to come over for pre-season training and also a top coaching team to hold coaching courses next year. All club members will get a discount for the coaching courses, which will be well worth it as have already got people ready to sign up once everything is confirmed. Also have had groups of children over from the UK training with the club over the Easter period, looking forward to seeing them back over the summer. Last week we met up with Jose Luis the mayor and Alberto Bernal the sports councillor Alberto Bernal for Guardamar to present the clubs plans including the teams coming over, now all we have to do is wait, but the signs from them were very promising. They have promised to get back during the summer as soon as they have talked to other teams to see how they can fit the clubs training in with everything. Looks like the club is moving forward at last thanks to the people have stood by it from the beginning. With new members joining we are looking to put a team in for the San Javier beach 5’s and San Juan 7’s like last year so come along and let’s get a good strong team together. Costa Cobras RFC training is on Monday and Wednesday from 18.0019.30 at Daya Vieja at the sports ground, also will be back down on Guardamar beach training during the summer like last year. So come a long and join the revolution with this new rugby club from the start
and be part of something new in the area. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier, as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport. So come along and join the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. Also team bonding after training in the nearest bar for a drink and chat, just how rugby should be. For more information about the club contact myself, Dutch, on 692 767 242. Also I am back down at Zoco market on Sunday again from 09.00-13.30, so come on down and find more out about the club and rugby in the area. Also for all of your rugby branded clothing and gear including Canterbury casuals and Cotton Traders shirts.
TORREVIEJA CC 208 for 10 MADRID 2nd CC 196 for 10
Torrevieja welcomed Madrid 2nd team to the Sports City arena, both teams looking for their first win of the season. After winning the toss, Torrevieja decided to bat first. Openers Kieran Wood and Leigh Blann started with great confidence and after 14 overs, had amassed 89 runs. In the next over, Kieran had a rush of blood to the head and danced down the wicket only to be stumped for 33. With Leigh on 39, Michael Wareing came in and was content to let Leigh have the strike, until he was run out going for a risky 2nd run. With the score at 182, Leigh was out, caught trying to put another ball over the fence but miss-hit it. He was surprised to find out he had scored 99. After that, runs were few and far between, the Madrid bowlers gaining the upper hand. Only Kailesh Singh reaching double figures, Torrevieja were all out for 208. S Hossain and Murari had 2 wickets each but Danesh Babu with 3 for 35 ws the best Madrid bowler. Madrid then started off their innings with caution but were
37
achieving the required run rate required, with David Stirton scoring freely. Wickets were beginning to fall at the other end and eventually, in the 22nd over, David was out for a stylish 55. With 5 batsmen scoring double figures the total required was getting closer and closer. However, Torrevieja had not given up and with the juniors playing with all the energy and the seniors playing with all the experience, Madrid were all out for 196. Juniors Ciaran Guichard and Alfie Court had 2 wickets each but top bowler was senior Jason Bay with 4 for 55. Anyone wishing to join Torrevieja CC or even provide sponsorship should contact Graham on 605 31 98 89. Torrevieja’s next game is home on 28th May against Sporting Alfas.

THE CELTS CLUB DE GOLF (PERALEJA)
This is our first report from our new beginnings at Peraleja Golf. Due to the continuous demand from golfers who wish to avail of competitive golf we have begun a new chapter in our very popular golf club by offering the option of playing at Peraleja. (We have reached a limit at La Serena with 140 members). This new affiliation is an extension of The Celts and we offer regular competitions and organised friendly midweek games. We would like to thank both Isaac and Wayne for the excellent package that they have put together for our members. I would like to thank John Lawrence for his comments on the course, some of which might help those thinking of joining our club at Peraleja. The course is open with room to play your shots and with less danger. Ideal for high handicappers like me. The par 3’s, are some of the best par 3’s I’ve played. All the fairways are cut very close and the ground is very hard so the ball will run and run. Fairways are very similar to links courses. There are three fairways that need some tlc. All the greens are in excellent condition, true and consistent speed. The bunkers are well maintained with good quality sand - and plenty of rakes. I played the course 3 years ago and the condition now is far and away better than it was then. John’s playing partner Don, who currently plays at another local course, summed up their opinions of the course when he remarked after they finished the round, “I don’t know what all the fuss was about”. The Celts played our first competition last Saturday at Peraleja and we had
BRADLEY BREAKERS
twelve players on the day. As this was our first outing we decided to play and individual singles and blind pairs format. At the end of the round with all the cards returned we carried out the draw for partners. Comments were made about the various points accumulated and certain players were hoping to avoid shall we say, those who had only manged to break twenty odd points. The six pairs were drawn and in turn the totals were revealed. As we were getting close to the last two pairs, Eddie said, I don’t believe it, “I have won a prize” you guessed it he got drawn out with the best score of the day and won first prize. Don’t ask Eddie’s score other than to say his partner got cut and Eddie got point one back, the luck of the Irish for you. The winning scores were, in second place with a combined 61 points Camillus Fitzpatrick and John O’Brien. The winners with 65 points Gordon Anders and Eddie Wall with 65 points. Congratulations to all those who participated. The International League is all but ready to begin for the new season. As I said in previous reports there is hug demand to compete in the event. There are already 15 teams committed to play this season and if you are interested in entering a team (8 players) will you please contact me? We have a team who are looking for a couple of players to join them, if contact me and I will give you the details? The Valencian federation have provided a subsidy for all players taking part in the tournament with all green fees costing 25 euro per course (walking). Among the courses we will play this year are, Las Ramblas, Alicante, Alenda, El Plantio, Bonalba, Villaitana, El Bosque, Lo Romero, La Marquesa and Los Colinas. We would like to thank the federation in Valencia for this generous sponsorship. We always welcome new members and guests and if you would like to play in one of our Open Days or join or club why not give me a call? For further details on membership and deals available now at Peraleja, call 615 466 398 or e-mail johnobrienalicante@ gmail.com.

ABOUT US
Although many Removal firms nowadays claim to be a 'family business' few actually are. This is where we are different. We pride ourselves on giving each individual job (regardless of size) a personal service that is second to none, and in achieving complete customer satisfaction. After all, it’s our reputation our name - at stake, so we do all we can to maintain our high standards and also meet those of the customer. It's for this reason that a majority of our work is due to recommendation.
SPAIN AND FRANCE
We specialise in relocations to and from France and Spain, and often have weekly loads going to both destinations. By combining knowledge of the European laws with local information and years of overseas experience, we have managed to remain as reliable in Europe as we are in England, and consequently have built up a good reputation in both countries. We work closely alongside several English-run storage companies in Spain, allowing us greater flexibility with our customers on both sides. All work within our guidelines and adhere to our high standards. We have become one of their top recommended removal companies for moves to and from the UK, and still remain the removal company of choice for many ex-pats.
EUROPEAN REMOVALS
We offer a professional yet personal service to and from most parts of Europe and will gladly tailor make a package to suit your individual needs. We understand that flexibility and reliability is of utmost importance to our customers, especially when moving overseas and we aim to cover both areas within the services we offer. Quotations for European moves follow the same protocol as for domestic UK removals (see 'Quotations '). They require an estimator to visit your home (where possible) or can be submitted via 'Online Quotes' . You may wish to email your enquiry to: fredphillipsremovalsltd@ymail.com
FULL OR PART LOADS
The main options to consider in a European move are how big your load is likely to be, and whether you require your belongings on a specific date, or just within a certain timescale. We offer two main services to cover these options: • Full Load - You pay for sole use of the vehicle. Gives you full control (as far as is possible) over the collection and delivery of your belongings, allowing you to work to a specific date. • Part Load - The cost effective option. You have part use of the vehicle along with other loads going via the same route to their destinations. Collection can still be when you require, but delivery is arranged on a full vehicle (cost efficient) basis. However, we will still do our best to work within your time frame. Both services can have storage incorporated into the move, and both offer the same experienced, dedicated customer care service from planning and preparation right through to delivery. Spain and France: We specialise in relocations to and from France and Spain, and often have weekly loads going to both destinations. By combining knowledge of the European laws with local information and years of overseas experience, we have managed to remain as reliable in Europe as we are in England, and consequently have built up a good reputation in both countries. All work within our guidelines and adhere to our high standards. STORAGE
We offer Storage Facilities both in the UK and in Spain. We can store anything from single items to full house loads, for any duration.

Aims: Our goal is to make your relocation overseas a completely stress free experience from start to finish, (as far as the removal is concerned!) and to maintain customer satisfaction throughout.
