Fireball seen in skies above Murcia, Andalucía and central Spain
A FIREBALL brighter than a full moon was seen crossing Spain in the early hours of yesterday (Saturday) morning, caused by a meteoric rock hitting the Earth's atmosphere at 95,000 kilometres per hour (nearly 60,000mph). It was caught on telescope at the La Hita observatory in Toledo at 23.06hrs exactly, and was seen from the ground by the naked eye from Murcia, Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid. Meteor detectors set up by the University of Huelva, on Spain's far south-west coast, based in Sevilla, the Sierra Nevada, Calar Alto (Almería province) and Huelva city itself were designed to monitor the skies continuously to enable astrophysicists to analyse the impact of burning space rocks coming from the Solar System and colliding against the Earth's atmosphere. These studies, part of the so-called SMART project, found that the fireball soared directly over northern Africa, which is why it was bright enough to
be seen from southern and central Spain. The brusque collision with the atmosphere forced the temperature of the meteoric rock to shoot up very suddenly, creating a fireball at an altitude of 107 kilometres above Morocco. It then headed north-west, disintegrating and fizzling out at 74 kilometres above the earth. Fragments coming away from the comet 169P/NEAT cause a glittery firework display of stars known as the Alpha Capricorn Shower, and which can be actively seen from the beginning of July to mid-August in the northern hemisphere. The star-shower usually creates extremely bright fireballs which are seen from parts of earth, as was the case with the one spotted in the early hours of Saturday morning. Studying fireballs enable astronomers to determine the physical and chemical properties of comets. thinkspain
Spain to approve €1.75 million in refugee aid Spain is about to distribute nearly €2 million to be used for aiding refugees, but is still a long way from welcoming the number of asylum seekers it has promised to do so. The Council of Ministers is meeting on Friday to approve the criteria for distributing €1.75 million to the country's autonomous communities for helping refugees. Since the EU agreed on a plan to share in the responsibility of caring for refugees under a redistribution and quota system, the Spanish government has been criticized for dragging its feet in meeting its promises. The UN refugee agency said in April that Spain needed to take a “greater responsibility” after its government had agreed to take in some 15,000 refugees from overwhelmed Greece and Italy: In the first six months after the agreement, Spain took in just 18
people. More recently the government has tried to speed up the process, pledging that it would be able to bring in 586 refugees by the end of June. But according to Europa Press, the country has taken in just 305. Meanwhile the Spanish public has tried to put pressure on the government to do more. And a survey in May found that Spaniards were among the most accepting of refugees worldwide with a high of 97 percent of Spanish respondents saying that they would "personally accept people fleeing war or persecution" into their country, according to Amnesty International. A report in June revealed that there are actually more asylum seekers in Spain from Venezuela than from Syria thelocal

Gibraltar urges Spain not to hinder free movement of workers post-Brexit
GIBRALTAR has urged Spain 'not to put up obstacles' to 'free movement of workers' between the Rock and the neighbouring country post-Brexit, pointing out that they are 'the motor' of the enclave's economy. Chief Minister Fabián Picardo says Gibraltar itself would 'always guarantee' this free movement, and 'trusts the Spanish government will not be an obstacle' to this with its 'threats' and its continuous statements about joint sovereignty of the Rock, which 'it knows perfectly well Gibraltar will never accept'. Picardo made this announcement during a meeting with leaders of two of Spain's largest unions, the labourers' commission (CCOO) and general workers' union (UGT). The Andalucía branch secretarygeneral of each union, Francisco Carbonero and Carmen Castilla respectively, travelled to Gibraltar to discuss workers' situations in light of the recent 'Brexit' vote. Spain's acting foreign affairs minister José Manuel García-Margallo is known for his strong views over where the Rock's sovereignty should lie, even saying within hours of the UK's vote to leave the European Union that 'the Spanish flag on Gibraltar is closer than ever'. And Picardo complains Mariano Rajoy has 'insisted' that for Gibraltar to continue to enjoy free movement of workers and access to the single market, the 'price' would be the Rock's acceptance of joint sovereignty. "This is a very obvious threat," the Chief Minister was reported as saying. He reports that García-Margallo had claimed that 'it's very cold outside the EU' and that Gibraltar would 'have to accept joint rule' since, if it did not, this would be 'bad for business' for the colony, which would be left 'outside the common market'. "Now is not the time to be threatening anyone, because Europe is not there for us to be blackmailed over," Picardo reportedly told the unions. And in fact, by not tampering with the situation in Gibraltar as it stands, the mere presence of the British enclave is helping mop up unemployment in the province of Cádiz. Spain's unemployment sits at around 22%, reaching nearly 50% among the under-30s, and in the southern region of Andalucía it is in excess of 45% across the board - but with new, good-quality jobs of top professional calibre and pay suitable for speakers of English, Spanish or both, the existing 12,000 commuters from Spain could easily grow and bring down Andalucía's jobless figures still further. The general view in Gibraltar is that Spain's insistence on owning, or part-owning the colony and covertly making life difficult to force the Rock's hand is a self-destructive attitude. Picardo says he 'trusts' that, 'when the time comes', Spain will shift from 'threats and demands' to becoming 'a positive ally for Gibraltar and the UK' in order to 'forge a future that
will be as positive as possible' for everyone who lives north and south of the border. Francisco Carbonero of the CCOO says he will do the rounds of national politicians and stress to them how important Gibraltar is to Spain's economy, adding: "We don't care about what flag flies from the Rock; we care about the workforce." Carmen Castilla of the UGT says Spain's government and the EU 'need to look more at social and humanitarian policies' rather than 'concentrating purely on economic ones', and will urge Spain to free up movement of goods, services, capital, people and workers between Gibraltar and its border nation as much as possible. "Uncertainty and border closure only benefit those who want to see people suffering less freedom and wellbeing," she stresses. Both union leaders say that as Gibraltar has 'clearly stated' its desire to remain within the EU - 84% of eligible voters cast their ballots in the referendum, and 96% of them voted to remain in Europe - then the EU must respect that and find a way of ensuring it does not leave the enclave out in the cold. An estimated 12,000 people commute to Gibraltar daily for their jobs from the province of Cádiz, most of whom are Spanish nationals but who include a number of British expats. In total, they make up nearly 50% of the Rock's workforce. Border queues, daily visa and passport-stamping demands, customs searches and other hold-ups could make their morning journeys to the office run into several hours, and mean they do not get home until very late at night. During the frontier-queue hell two years ago in which everyone was stopped and searched - even those on mopeds and pushbikes - the Rock itself reported booming trade in hotels, bars and restaurants as workers decided to stay overnight and just go home at weekends. A Spanish insurance underwriter interviewed, whose British husband is in a similar role and who live in La Línea de la Concepción, said Spain's over-zealous controls were not harming Gibraltarian citizens; rather, Spanish people themselves. She said she and her husband often queued for three hours at a time in the sweltering summer heat on their mopeds, and that the police from Gibraltar - not from Spain - handed out free bottles of water to those in line. thinkspain

Air Europa pilots set to strike this summer
In more bad news for travellers, pilots with Spanish airline Air Europa are set to strike in the coming weeks. Although the final dates for the strikes are yet to be set, they are expected to take place at the end of July and the beginning of August, after pilots at the carrier voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking industrial action. Pilots have vowed to maintain so-called minimum services during the strike as is required under Spanish law, but the action is bound to cause disruption, including flight delays and cancellations, if it goes
ahead as planned. Air Europa pilots are protesting the creation of the new low-cost Air Europa Express service. Eleven Air Europa planes will become part of the new fleet, while the budget carrier will also take on some of the established firm’s passenger-carrying work. But Air Europa pilots say the pilots for the new service will be brought in from outside at lower costs and won’t be covered by industry agreements. The strike comes after six days of chaos at Barcelona-based Spanish airline Vueling which
blamed unspecified "operational difficulties" for flight disruptions. But both a union s p o k e s p e r s o n representing flight crews and the Spanish government said Vueling were to blame for the turmoil because the carrier had failed to properly plan for the busy summer months. On Tuesday, Vueling president Javier SánchezPrieto apologized for the carrier’s problems, saying eight planes would be brought in to shore up services as of Wednesday. thelocal

Madrid swimming pools may hold ‘Bathing Suit-Free Day’
Request by nudist group gets greenlighted by Manuela Carmena administration, but attracts criticism from PP Madrid’s public swimming pools may hold a Bathing Suit-Free Day, or an Optional Bathing Suit Day, some time this summer. An email sent by the city’s sports department to the 21 district heads explains that municipal pools, if they see fit, have authorization to organize such an event. The decision follows a request by the Association for the Development of Naturism (ADN). But the city of Madrid notes that the initiative is not new. A similar day was held last year at the sports complex in Casa de Campo, and on several occasions under former mayor José María Álvarez del Manzano, of the conservative Popular Party (PP), who served between 1991 and 2003. “Following indications from the director general of Sports (which answers to the culture department), I inform you of a request made by the ADN Association proposing a Bathing Suit-Free Day or an Optional Bathing Suit Day, in case you feel it is worth it to authorize it at any of the pools in your district,” reads the e-mail. The contents of the email were not revealed by a member of the ruling Ahora Madrid coalition, but rather by Esperanza Aguirre, a veteran conservative figure in Madrid politics and a vocal opponent of the leftist administration run by Manuela Carmena. Aguirre called the initiative “a fantastic
3
flight of fancy,” and added: “I don’t know if you will have the guts to introduce a Veil-Free Day for Muslim women.” What we aim to do with this day is to educate, to share our values, which are Western values, even Christian values The idea of a day in the nude at municipal pools is “just one more of the crazy ideas that you [Carmena] have gotten us accustomed to,” added Aguirre. Ismael Rodrigo, head of the ADN association, says that Madrid has held the event at the pool of Complutense University (in 2010) and at the Lago pool last year. “The day selected for Bathing Suit-Free Day, which is a Spanish invention, is the third Sunday of July, although until now some pools have held it on Naturism Day, on June 5,” he explains. “For this year, we’ve decided to delay it until July 24 to give them time to organize it, but it still needs approval by the district chief.” “What we aim to do with this day is to educate, to share our values, which are Western values, even Christian values if you get right down to it,” he adds. “Our bodies should not be criminalized, and the best way we see to convey that is to try not to use clothes when they are not necessary, and they are not necessary when bathing – if anything, the wet bathing suit is a bother. It is a habit built on prejudice, and we want to convey a more open way to see the world, right from childhood.” elpais

Why hot weather can be deadliest at the beginning of the summer
A new study examining data from more than 300 cities shows that health risks fall as summer progresses Numerous heat warnings have been activated in provinces across Spain, and meteorological predictions that this summer will be hotter and drier than usual are raising concerns about public health. A recently published study claims that the mortality risk for extreme heat is greater at the beginning of the summer than at the end – a fact that could encourage prevention campaigns to start earlier and focus on the first days of the summer. “Results provide strong evidence of a reduction in risk over the season,” reported researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In their study, they analyzed the adjustments and lifestyle modifications of 305 citizens from nine countries, including Spain. Every country we studied showed a significantly higher mortality rate due to heat during the first weeks of summer Researcher Aurelio Tobías “Every country we studied showed a significantly higher mortality rate due to heat during the first weeks of summer,” said Aurelio Tobías, researcher with the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research and one of the authors of the study. Published in the scientific newspaper American Journal of Epidemiology, its conclusions could be traced to factors such as the progressive adjustment to the heat, something that has been observed in
ort
many studies, combined with changes in behavior that help people adapt, such as changing routine or using fans or air conditioning. The researchers believe that this notable decrease in heat-related deaths could be explained by the proliferation of heat-illness prevention campaigns and the investment of resources towards combating the heat. In the field of epidemiology, they use the term “harvesting effect” for the phenomenon where those whose health is already compromised are affected earlier rather than later. “This study shows consistently that
Los efectos del calor en Madrid A group of people cool off in the fountains of Juan Carlos I Park in Madrid. /Javier Lizón (EFE) the effect of the extreme heat of early summer lasts longer, from four to eight days, as opposed to at the end of the season, where it might only last two days,” adds Tobías. While this study is among the first to analyze this harvesting effect at different points in the summer on an international scale, its results are not unprecedented. Other studies from across 15 European cities, 148 US cities and South Korea have ultimately
arrived at similar conclusions. This work could be useful for educational programs that offer information on how to stay cool and raise awareness of the effect of the heat on vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly. “It could be useful to launch these campaigns earlier, concentrating resources on the first few days of the summer, when the risk is highest,” suggested Tobías. elpais

economic news - Theresa May to succeed Cameron as UK PM Theresa May is to become the UK’s prime minister tonight - after David Cameron announced he would quit after Prime Minister’s Questions. Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Mr Cameron said he would offer his resignation to the Queen on Wednesday afternoon at Buckingham Palace. Mrs May’s only rival to succeed Mr Cameron as Conservative leader, Andrea Leadsom, pulled out earlier on Monday. Mr Cameron, PM since 2010, decided to quit after the UK’s Brexit vote. In a brief statement outside No 10, Mr Cameron said Mrs Leadsom had made “absolutely the right decision” to stand aside and that he was “delighted” Mrs May, the home secretary, was to succeed him. He said a “prolonged period of transition” was not necessary, and added: “So tomorrow I will chair my last cabinet meeting. On Wednesday I will attend the House of Commons for Prime Minister’s Questions. “After that I expect to go the Palace and offer my Is situated at No2 Calle Mayor Algorfa and can be found just off the square in Algorfa next to the tobacconist. resignation.” The prime minister praised Mrs May as “strong” and “competent” and he said she was “more than able to provide the leadership” the UK needs in the coming years. “She will have my full support,” he added. It comes after another day of dramatic developments in the political word, when Mrs Leadsom pulled out of the two-way leadership contest, leaving Mrs May - the front runner - as the only candidate to take over leading the party and become PM. What happens next? The 1922 committee of Conservative MPs, which is overseeing the leadership contest, has declared Mrs May the new party leader “with immediate effect”. David Cameron says he will do Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday and then head to Buckingham Palace and officially tender his resignation to the Queen and recommend she sends for Theresa May as his replacement Gigi’s Ladies Boutique is ladies fashion store which specializes in Adini, Marble and Capri daywear as well as Panache, Roza and Naturana lingerie. We also have a large range of underwear and swimwear
Mrs May will then go to Buckingham Palace to see the Queen and receive her invitation to form a government Theresa May should then be in place as UK prime minister by Wednesday evening - it is not yet clear when the Cameron family will move out of No 10 Mrs Leadsom said she did not have sufficient support among Conservative MPs to lead “a strong and stable government”, and gave her backing to the home secretary to succeed Mr Cameron. BBC chief political correspondent Vicki Young said events were “moving very rapidly”. She said Mrs May had begun the day launching her leadership campaign to take to the party membership - and within the space of several hours found out she would be prime minister by Wednesday. Mrs May would now have to decide the make-up of her new cabinet, she said. Mr Cameron announced his intention to resign as prime minister on 24 June, after finding himself on the losing side of the EU referendum, with the UK voting by 52% to 48% in favour of leaving. Business news - Pound rises as Leadsom quits Conservative leadership contest
The value of the pound has risen against major currencies after Andrea Leadsom quit the Conservative Party leadership contest. Mrs Leadsom had been up against Home Secretary Theresa May in the race to succeed Prime Minister David Cameron. Against the dollar, the pound had fallen below $1.29 earlier, but then rebounded as reports circulated that Mrs Leadsom was to leave the contest. In early afternoon the pound was up 0.2% against the dollar at $1.2981. Against the euro, sterling was also 0.2% higher at €1.1745. “There is a bit more political clarity which is giving sterling a bit of a boost,” said John
Hardy, head of currency strategy at Saxo Bank. However, he added: “We should see a fair bit of resistance around the $1.30 area.” The pound still remains well below levels reached before the referendum, when it had been trading at around $1.50. Property rebound On the stock market, speculation that the Bank of England will cut interest rates on Thursday lifted the FTSE 100 to an 11-month high. Bank of England governor Mark Carney hinted recently that fresh stimulus measures could be needed following the Brexit vote, which could mean interest rate cuts or an expansion of the Bank’s quantitative easing programme. Joshua Mahony, an analyst at IG, said markets
thought there was a 75% chance of the Bank cutting its key interest rate to 0.25% from 0.5% on Thursday. The FTSE 100 index rose 62.73 points, or 0.95%, to 6,653.37, while the more UK-focused FTSE 250 was up 439.11 points, or 2.7%, at 16,616.86. Property shares led the FTSE 100 higher as their recent recovery continued, with Taylor Wimpey up 7.6%, Persimmon 6.8% higher and Barratt Developments rising 8%. Shares in property-related companies have seen big falls since the UK voted to leave the EU, although a partial recovery was sparked last week after a note from UBS suggested the sell-off had been overdone. It might be time to invest in a new pair of trainers
running makes you smarter! Want an incentive to get into running? Going for a jog can make you smarter, according to new research. Now where are those trainers?!
Whether you like running or not, you can’t deny that it’s good for you. It gets you outdoors, it burns calories and it’s a great way to boost your mood. But apparently —and this is based on scientific research people —running can actually make you smarter too. It’s been documented that exercise in general can improve memory and sharpen cognitive functions, but new research suggests that it’s actually specific types of ‘aerobic and sustained’ exercise that boost cerebral activity.
But running has actually been found to be the most effective when it comes to training your brain, and making it smarter. Running can kick start a process called neurogenesis. This is when new brain cells are created, in a part of the brain where memory formation and spacial navigation occurs. The act of running therefore makes your brain much sharper, and in turn, much smarter. So the next time you hop out for a run, you’re not only giving your body a workout, you’ll be giving your brain one too. Win-win! http://www.prima.co.uk

window tinting benefits There are many benefits of window tinting. In hot weather, it cuts down heat, which can reduce air conditioning expenses. In cold weather, it reflects interior heat back into the house, reducing heating costs. Along with heat reduction, window film can also help protect your curtains and furniture from the effects of the sun. To protect home furnishings, a window film will block almost 99 percent of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Some window films offer another benefit such as shatter resistance. The film holds glass shards together and acts as a barrier between the interior of the home and the glass. Window films can also help to reduce the glare on your television. The percentage of glare reduction is usually related to the visible light transmittance. The lower the amount of light transmitted through the film, the greater the glare reduction inside the home.
Solar Guard are specialists in the application of solar (sun) protection window film, privacy film, UV silver reflective film and tint. Professional and Legal installation of solar film and tinting to home and business.

Alice’s Restaurant
Once whilst exploring the delightful old quarter of Naples, or Napoli as it prefers to be called; I stumbled across an Aladdin’s Cave of a shop filled with DVDs. Always one for a rummage, I dived in and came up for air clutching a copy of the 1969 film version of Alice’s Restaurant. I knew a film existed but had never seen it. Sadly I still haven’t seen all of it as the video gets stuck in too many places but at 3€, still a bargain. The film came out just after Arlo Guthrie performed at Woodstock; based on his 1967 anti-war song/ tale Alice’s Restaurant which he wrote as a protest against the Vietnam War. Voted 3rd best film of 1969, it grossed over $6 mil making it the 21st most viewed movie that year. The Director Arthur Penn who also directed Bonnie and Clyde was nominated for an Oscar. Arlo sings the true tale of him and a friend doing a favour for Alice

your brexit voice Hi all, I'm worried about what can happen to us now. Theresa May saying she can't guarantee that the EU citizens in the UK will be able to stay once she takes over there (or that they will need work permits or visas or a certain base income to remain), means that our position here in Spain can not be regarded as safe. Simon Manley the career ambassador was saying the other day not to worry: the British government (when they have one) will take care of us. I was reminded of the winter fuel allowance debacle and how we really have no one in our corner. Will they continue to pay the EHIC for Britons abroad, and adjust their pensions each year according to the cost of living?. But, we could have champions - that would be your newspapers, if you can support the proposal of saying 'we exist, we are not going to give up our lives here'. While no one knows (or evidently cares) how many ex-pat Britons there are living in Spain – anywhere from 270,000 to 800,000 (quite a variance) – the reality is that we as a large group have absolutely no ‘say’ in our political future, because we have no representation, no agency, no office, no spokesperson and no defender of our own situation. No one can be more in favour of Europe than an expatriate, yet we are not represented. We need security. We are, in fact, larger still: there are an estimated 1,500,000 Britons living in Europe (or perhaps two million – no one knows). We all need protection. Larger yet, there are thought to be twenty million Europeans living in another EU country. Who speaks for them? If we were to organise as 'ex-pats', it would be as ex-pats Europe-wide, all those Europeans who live in another country and have no representation in Brussels. (A bit ambitious, but that's where we need to be looking). We need to have a voice in Brussels – and a valid European passport or identity card. Only then will we be safe from maverick politicians and racial division. So let us start now, before the recent politics of the UK can breach our safety and our comfort. To begin, we will need a list of supporters’ names, with their email address, local town, province and country.
With a thousand names, we will begin our journey to Brussels. Our Email is: andyjimlenox@gmail.com Please write to introduce yourself

one Thanksgiving; remember Alice? Alice lived in the bell tower of an abandoned church and used to drop her rubbish from the tower down into the church proper. They picked up the garbage (as they call it across the pond) and took it to the city dump. But the dump was closed so they found a little cliff off a side road which had a small pile of garbage at the bottom. Thinking one big pile was better than two little piles; they dropped the garbage down there. The next morning Police officer Obie phoned them as he’d found Arlo’s name on an envelope at the bottom of the half ton pile of garbage. This was the biggest crime to hit Stockbridge Massachusetts in many years; normally there were two police officers and one police car. By the time Obie had hauled Arlo to the scene, there were five police officers and three
police cars. Twenty eight glossy photos had been taken off the approach, the getaway, even aerial photography and there were police dogs sniffing for clues. Arlo ends up with a $50 dollar fine and was told to pick up the garbage. Later when Guthrie went to a US Army office to be processed and drafted to Vietnam; he gets told instead to sit on the Group W bench due to his conviction. Jokingly Arlo regales who he sat with; all sorts of undesirables – mother rapers, father stabbers, even father rapers! All these desperate criminals ask him what he did to deserve being on the group W bench with the rest of them. He tells them ‘littering’ which doesn’t impress them one bit and they huddle in a corner ignoring him; until he says ‘and creating a nuisance!’ At this the fierce criminals allow him into
their gang for the day. Next when the recruiting S e r g e ant asked if he has been rehabilitated, Arlo jumps around screaming ‘kill, kill, kill!’ Then Arlo asks; ‘do I have to be moral enough to join the army, burn women, kids, houses and villages after being a litterbug?’ He is excused on psychiatric grounds! It’s a fantastic anti war song; amusing and delighting over 19 minutes; if not heard yet there are many versions on YouTube. One version is of Arlo performing it in the actual church from the song. In the movie Officer Obie actually plays himself as he figured it was better to make himself look a fool than an actor do it for him. Alice (remember Alice?) also plays a cameo role in the movie.

FOUR RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WE ALWAYS MAKE TO OUR CLIENTS AFTER THEY HAVE PURCHASED A PROPERTY IN SPAIN. Question: I have just purchased a property in Spain. Is there any useful advice you can give us: Answer: • Do not become a tax resident of Spain before discussing all the pros and cons with your solicitor. It may or may not be in your interest, depending on your circumstances. To join the system is a half hour job while to get out of the system is complex. There are many reasons both in favour of and against becoming a tax resident in Spain and they require careful consideration. • If you become a resident, before deciding where to keep you savings and in what products (ie. Where? In Spain, in the UK, in Ireland, in Jersey etc. And in what products? Deposits, condos de inversion, Spanish
compliant and non compliant bonds, shares etc.) you should discuss these matters with a solicitor accustomed to cross/ border estates. This will ensure your option is the most sensible from the point of view of both tax efficiency and future probate complexity. Over the years we have seen many cases of unnecessarily complicated estates, resulting from greedy and or ignorant financial advisors who have sold unnecessarily complex financial products with the excuse of saving inheritance tax, that have then caused nasty surprises for the heirs. • Make sure you make a Spanish will. It is extremely important that they are done by a firm that has experience with probate. • Have somebody lined up to present your non-resident imputed income tax returns each year.

China warns on global economy and says G20 must lead
China's commerce minister says the outlook for the global economy remains grim despite it having overcome the impact of the 2008 financial crisis. Gao Hucheng said at a G20 meeting in Shanghai that major economies must lead the way in tackling problems, including slowing trade and sluggish growth. To boost trade the G20 ministers, from the world's major economies, agreed to cut trade costs, increase policy coordination and enhance financing. They also approved a trade growth plan. "We agree that we need to do more to achieve our common objectives for global growth, stability and prosperity," the G20 ministers said in a statement. Mr Gao said the international community now expected the G20 to show initiative and leadership in solving economic growth problems. China's will host the main G20 summit later this year. 'Deep effects' "In the past few years through our shared hard work, the global
economy emerged from its previous low and is developing in a good direction,'' Mr Gao had said at the meeting held over the weekend. He added however that "the deep effects of the global financial crisis can still be felt". "The revival and growth of the global economy is still lacking in strength," Mr Gao said. "Low levels of global trade and investment have not recovered to their pre-financial crisis levels." Mr Gao did not mention Brexit in his opening remarks at the meeting, but the vote by the UK to leave the EU has added to the global financial uncertainty. BBC

Building Permits for New Homes on the Increase Recent data published by the Ministry of Public Works indicates that the number of licences authorised for new construction for residential use in Spain reached a total of 21,577 in the first quarter of the year, representing an increase of 42.1% compared to the same period of 2015, when a total of 15,184 permits were granted, and continues the upward trend of the previous two years. Of the total number of licences granted up until the end of April, some 15,843 related to apartments in blocks, representing a year-on-year increase of 45.3%, and 5,730 were for individual family homes, with a year-on-year increase of 34.2%. In addition, there were four permits authorised for other types of buildings not intended for family
housing, compared with 11 which were issued in the same period of 2015. El Mundo reported that this increase in the first four months of 2016 follows the recovery registered in 2015, when the number of building permits rose by 42.5%, and the 1.7% increase of 2014, which ended seven consecutive years of declines, reaching a total of 34,873 permits granted. In 2013, this real estate market indicator registered an all-time low with only 34,288 licences authorised, which represented a decline of 96% since the peak levels reached in 2006, when a total of 865,561 building permits were issued. kyero.com

Hundreds sign petition demanding dual nationality for British people living in Spain
propert y services
Esteemed British journalists call for Spanish government to grant Brits joint nationality. HUNDREDS of concerned people have signed a petition demanding British expats in Spain are given dual nationality. British journalists Giles Tremlett and William Chislett launched the Change.org petition following the Brexit referendum result. They are calling on the Spanish government to make the offer to the 25,000 Britons who have lived here for more than 10 years. Tremlett, the Economist’s Spain correspondent, and Chislett, a former Times journalist, have lived in Spain for over 50 years between them. But like thousands of British people living in Spain, they were unable to vote in last month’s crucial referendum. “The plans of tens of thousands of British people in Spain who have made their lives here, their careers here, made their families here have changed dramatically against their wills,” he told the Olive Press. “Most of those people would have voted Remain, but lots of them did not have a vote “Other than being able to vote in the European elections, we are completely disenfranchised if we have lived out of the UK for 15 years. “We are qualified people who contribute to the Spanish economy. But now do not know what will happen to our pension rights, our health rights. “What about our right to live in another country for a couple of years and look after parents who might be ill? Or our childrens’ rights to go abroad to university then come back? “I couldn’t vote on a decision that affects my children and my life and career choices.” He added: “Until a Brexit deal is signed, everything is up in the air. That is why we are calling on the Spanish government to offer joint nationality.” The Change.org petition has gained over 1,500 signatures since going live. Currently, Spain only allows dual nationality for people from Latin America, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea or Portugal. But last year PP leader Mariano Rajoy granted joint nationality to descendants of the Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in the 15th century. And in 2009, surviving British members of the International Brigades were given Spanish nationality. Tremlett said: “Spaniards in Britain can ask for joint nationality after five years. “This week, the German vice chancellor has already proposed joint nationality for young Brits following Brexit. So the idea is out there in other countries.” Tremlett also backed a plan calling for parliamentary representation for Spain’s estimated 800,000 British expats. “I think it is a very good idea. The French and the Prompt and reliable service, Italians do it,” he said. no job too small. “We are completely without a voice here, Full bathrooms or just makeovers and we need one now and handyman service. as everything has been 24 hour call out put through the shredder Boilers: 80 litre fully installed from 160€ since Brexit.” http://www.expatica. Experts Predict Brexit Will Affect Holiday Home Market, But Not Prices
The Professional Association of Real Estate Experts (Apei) believes that the Brexit will affect the holiday sector within the real estate market in Spain, although it will not affect prices because, although the British market is very important for the Spanish real estate sector, the effect will be offset by other markets which are greatly strengthening their investment interests on the coast, which will compensate for the fall in the British demand. For this reason, El Economista reported that the Association considers that the departure of the United Kingdom from the EU will not negatively affect prices. The President of Apei, Óscar Martínez, said: “We have investors from both European and non-European countries, such as the Chinese, who are greatly increasing”, and added:
“I think that you must not fear the negative impact the Brexit may have, because it will be adjusted to these other markets and will not affect the prices”. According to the President, the Brexit will “especially” affect the holiday sector, both in terms of sales and rental transactions, as the Spanish coast is the holiday destination of many British families. Martínez predicts that British buyers will find it more expensive to buy or rent in Spain as a result of the fall in the pound, while the operations and transactions will become more complicated as a result of not being in the EU. However, he added that although the impact, i.e. the slowdown in transactions, has been noticed, it has only so far been slight, because of the uncertainty of the whole situation. kyero.com

12 things I never did before moving to Spain leave the room. I don’t even know you!
6. Eat lunch at 3pm and dinner at 10pm I remember when I first came to Spain in 2008. Oh, how I hated even waiting until 1:30pm to eat (when our residence’s cafeteria would open). I was always starving. Nowadays I shift easily between the Spanish timetable and the American one. It doesn’t feel weird to eat lunch at 12:30pm back home or 3pm in Spain. It’s just how it is. Now I secretly love eating dinner late at night, and I vow never to become the person who eats at 5:30pm.
7. Think about how to say everything in Spanish Whatever my partner and I are doing, I’m always wondering how to say such-and-such word in a sentence. We might be watching our favourite television show and I’ll be wondering how to say something in Spanish, especially if it’s a word Mario doesn’t know in English. I think about this a lot: when reading a book, when talking to friends, when at the supermarket. Spanish has invaded my head and thus my life.
8. Think about wasting water Why do toilets in the US have so much water in them? It seems like such a waste to me now, after years of seeing tiny European toilets with their 50mL of water. A friend said the newer toilets in the US are going to be more similar to Europe’s, which I count as a step in the right direction. 9. Use public transportation Sure, every once in a while I took the bus in college, but before that? Never. It’s shocking to Spaniards how little public transportation we have in the US. As much as I love the freedom a car provides, it would be nice to have better public transportation options in mid-size cities. In Madrid, there are so many options: You never really realise how much you’re changing while in buses (inter- and intra-city), trains (short, medium, and long distance), and the the process of living abroad, but looking back I realised I have metro. The price is super cheap too. I am struggling to imagine how different our changed quite a bit over my years in Spain. Here are just some of lives might if we ever moved to a smaller-sized US city.
the things I didn’t do before moving to Spain. 1. Wear slippers
10. Hang things on the line to dry
Unfortunately, at our house in Madrid, we don’t have an outside clothesline. We I used to never wear slippers, and going barefoot was okay – even in the dead of don’t have a dryer either. So what do we do? We hang ours on a tendedero. But winter – which according to Spanish belief, could cause you a host of sicknesses. many Spaniards do have a clothesline outside to hang their things to dry. Before Now, after many years of coaching by Spaniards, I’ve started to wear slippers. I living in Spain, I had barely seen this – we always dried our things in the dryer. even put them by the side of my bed in case I wake up and walk to the bathroom. 11. Worry so much about having my stuff stolen What has happened to me? I don’t mean to be negative about Spain, but I grew up in a small town where 2. Worry about what I wear to the grocery store people did (and still do) leave their car doors unlocked when they stopped at the In Madrid, since I feel anonymous, I wear my workout clothes to the store. But in store or diner. Here in Madrid I’ve become very protective of my stuff. Once I Zamora? Absolutely not – there I have to be properly outfitted, and sweatpants are was going to leave my clothing in a bag in the gym locker room but an older lady definitely off the list. Someone might see me, and what you're seen wearing says advised me not to, telling me that she’d had her old, practically worthless flip-flops a lot in Spain. stolen there along with a hairbrush. A hairbrush! Who steals that sort of thing? Lesson learned: I had to be protective of not just things like my wallet or phone, 3. Ask for drinks without ice Why do we drink super-cold icy drinks in winter in the US? Especially when the but also my hairbrush. Hmm. restaurant decides to keep the heat at 66F/19°C! I start shivering immediately when 12. Use earplugs to sleep at night I drink one of these beverages in mid-December. Of course, drinking ice water in Even when I lived in an apartment in college, I never slept with earplugs. I was summer is different – put more ice in my drink, Spain! lucky to have good neighbors who didn’t blast their music but I suppose our walls 4. Buy bread daily weren’t that thin either. Here? I have the trash truck that comes at midnight. I also I don’t eat that much bread but I do live with a Spaniard and he’s used to his daily have neighbours with really great surround sound who always seem to be watching ration of bread. In Spain, you don’t 'put meat on the table', you 'llevar el pan a casa'. epic movies, a downstairs neighbour with a yappy mutt, and an upstairs neighbour Bread is the lifeblood for many Spaniards. Just check out the numerous idioms with high heels. Noise pollution – it’s real. So I sleep with earplugs. That way I won’t related to bread. be kept up by the yap-yap-yapping of Chaval the dog. So what about you? What are some things you do differently because you’ve lived 5. Say hello to people in the gym locker room Can someone please clarify why this is a thing? I still can’t get over the fact that, in a new country? while I’m partially undressed (awkward!), I’m supposed to say bye to you as you http://www.expatica.com

The Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria (Part three) The mood in the village was ugly. amphibious creature unknown to science.
The Rattlebag family of Rotherham had failed to return from a pony trek in the Sierra Alhamilla. Their relations in Yorkshire had received a ransom note from El Tonto, a local petty criminal demanding a ridiculous amount of money for their freedom. True to his name he had put a return address on the envelope. The Guardia Civil swooped on his hideout arresting him and freeing the family. The Rattlebags said they preferred life as a captive rather than in the Riverside Holiday Village and thanked El Tonto as he was led away.
To try and avert an uprising amongst the holiday makers Manuela was ordered to bring some fun into their daily lives. Unfortunately, she took this entirely the wrong way and was arrested for corrupting morals. The Río Verde situation was desperate. Of the eight children that entered the ‘Little Dolphins’ Fun Race’ only two left the water unscathed. Three had to be rescued from the River’s evil slow moving slime. Two developed a disgusting foot fungus with the most foul odour and one barely survived a tug-of-war between his Mother and some unidentified
Ambulances ferried the sick, injured and chronically depressed to the Hospital Santa Maria Magdalena in Almería thinning out the residents of the Holiday Village. One of the holiday chalets collapsed putting a further four in the casualty department. The weight of a glider they were constructing in the roof space was the cause. Other bids for freedom included a tunnel which accidentally came out under the main drain and four people who almost asphyxiated after climbing inside a vaulting horse. Then the beer ran out. Unable to pay the wholesaler all supplies were stopped. The holiday makers took over the camp driving out the staff. This was counterproductive as the only beer within ten miles was in the bar La Casa Devante and the Golondrina Verde both in Alqueria. As dawn broke it was obvious that The Riverside Holiday Village, Alqueria was empty, completely deserted. Where the holiday makers went is a complete mystery. No enquiries have ever been made into their fate, no one has complained about missing kith and kin. The SPLAT charterflight never made the UK bound leg of its journey. In yet another unusual show of village unity it was decided never to mention the enterprise again. Rodriquez piled kindling against the chalets’ walls and set fire to the complex. He successfully claimed the insurance making five Euros and 45 cents profit on the venture.
The Power of 4
I’m not good with numbers. I can face fire-breathing dragons and monsters under the bed with equanimity. I can laugh in the face of Danger, and tweak the tail of Adversity, but numbers scare me; in particular 3, 6, 7, and 9, so when Pete announced that he wanted a 4 I was not immediately overjoyed. I responded with a wholly reasonable ‘Why?’ ‘For the pool.’ He answered. I pondered. I could see no connection whatsoever between the pool and 4, so I reiterated ‘Why?’ ‘If I had a 4 I would be able to get in and out of the pool.’ This raised 2 options: He’d gone bonkers – a possibility. Or I had misheard him – equally possible. It was a hot day, and my brain was not in the mood for a challenge, so I changed my enquiry to ‘How?’ ‘Because I’ll have a 4.’ He answered in the patient tone of one explaining the Theorem of Pythagoras to a guinea pig. This had gone on long enough. ‘How will a 4 help you get in and out of the pool?’ ‘If I have a 4 you won’t need to be there to help me get in and out of the pool.’ The conversation was in danger of becoming a loop. At the risk of seeming silly I asked ‘Couldn’t you have a 5?’ ‘They don’t do 5s.’ ‘Who don’t do 5s?’ ‘Indalpool.’ I gathered together all my mental faculties, some of which

By Jos Biggs
josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk had already fainted from overexertion. Obviously 4s existed in physical form, and were to be located at Indalpool, all I had to do was find out what form of life they were. ‘What’s a 4?’ ‘It’s one of these.’ He pointed to the laptop screen. On it was a variety of swimming pool handrails. ‘There – 4s.’ He announced in triumph. ‘See?’ I looked, and sure enough, there they were – 4s! For any sane and logical person who may still be struggling with the definition of a 4: A 4 is a handrail shaped like a 4 which is attached to the pool surround to provide security when entering or leaving the pool via the steps. Now I understood! Rather than rely on the dubious support of my arm as he perilously totters down the steps Pete could put his trust in a nice shiny chrome 4, securely bolted to the pool surround. He loves his 4. So do I!

Fresh, Healthy Summer Recipes Haricots Verts and Grape Tomato Salad with Crème Fraîche Dressing This dish turns your table into a fancy French bistro, but it requires exactly two minutes of cooking. Seek out real crème fraîche―it's thicker and a bit less tangy than sour cream―though sour cream will do in a pinch. This dressing is excellent on any kind of salad, and you can leave out the shallots to use it on fruit salads, too, especially those with melon.
Ingredients
1 pound haricots verts, trimmed 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil 2 tablespoons minced shallots 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 2 tablespoons crème fraîche 1 tablespoon honey 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved 1 tablespoon pine nuts, toasted
Method
Cook haricots verts in boiling water 2 minutes or until crisp-tender. Drain and rinse with cold water; drain. Combine basil and next 5 ingredients (through salt) in a large bowl, stirring with a whisk. Add haricots verts and tomatoes; toss gently to coat. Divide mixture evenly among 6 plates; sprinkle with nuts.

F O K TAL N W O T E H T Kroger recalls ice cream because of peanut reside in flour The Kroger Co. is recalling another product because it contains flour possibly contaminated with peanut residue, a known allergen. Kroger’s Deluxe S’mores Ice Cream in 48-ounce tubs is the latest product to be recalled by the nation’s second-largest grocery retailer. Kroger initiated the recall because Grain Craft recalled flour used in the ice cream after tests showed it had low levels of peanut residue. The recalled ice cream can be identified by the UPC number 0001111001399 and “Sell By May 20, 2017,” or “Sell By May 23, 2017,” date codes. “People who are allergic to peanuts could have a severe reaction if they consume this product. For consumers who are not allergic to peanuts, there is no safety issue with the
product,” according to the recall notice on the Food and Drug Administration’s website. Kroger stores and other grocery store banners owned by Kroger have pulled the product. The Kroger Co. initiated its customer recall notification system to alert consumers who may have purchased the ice cream with messages on register receipts and with phone calls. Other grocery stores that received the recalled Kroger branded ice cream are: Dillons, Baker’s, Gerbes, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, JayC, King Soopers, City Market, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s. The ice cream was distributed to stores in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana,
Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wyoming.

The first Volkswagen car to run purely on algae biogas has been unveiled in Spain.
The vehicle’s biogas is created at the Wastewater treatment plant in Chiclana, Cadiz. The microalgae feeds on organic wastewater that’s sent to the facility for treatment, creating a methane gas that can be collected and converted into energy. The two-door car can run on compressed natural gas as well
as biogas, and generates zero emissions. Frank Rogalla, director of technology & innovation, Aqualia, said: “For the first time in the history of humanity a car will be fueled with a full batch of algae biogas. This is the culmination of five years of hard work and a very proud moment for Aqualia.” http://www.theolivepress.es
Spain judge charges Volkswagen with fraud over emissions
Volkswagen last month agreed to a record payout in the US, pledging to buy back or fix vehicles that tricked pollution tests, an Volkswagen last month agreed to a record payout in the US, pledging to buy back or fix vehicles that tricked pollution tests, and pay each owner up to $10,000 A Spanish judge has charged Volkswagen with fraud and damage to the environment over an emissionscheating scandal which has plunged the German automaker into crisis, a statement said Friday. The judge accuses Volkswagen of “suspected participation in fraud, causing damage to a great number of people, of subsidy fraud and of damage to the environment”, according to the charges which were brought on June 30 and published Friday. The Spanish investigation centres on suspected diesel engine manipulation, made possible by software which detected test conditions and temporarily cut emissions to pass tests on environmental norms, it said. Among the Volkswagen brands in the
spotlight is Spain’s SEAT, taken over by Volkswagen in the 1980s, which runs two factories producing SEAT-branded cars, but also Audis. Spanish prosecutors asked for permission to open an investigation in October after associations lodged complaints against Volkswagen. Volkswagen last month agreed to a record payout in the US, pledging to buy back or fix vehicles that tricked pollution tests, and pay each owner up to $10,000. The huge settlement, the biggest in a US air pollution probe, only partly resolves claims against the automaker, embroiled in a months-long scandal that has roiled the industry and tarnished the reputation of the company. But nine months after the “Dieselgate” affair, when it emerged VW had installed emissions-cheating software into 11 million diesel engines worldwide, the former paragon of German industry is still nowhere near drawing a line under the affair. Around the world, VW is facing regulatory probes and lawsuits filed by car owners who feel they have been duped and investors who are seeking LOS DOLSES S.L compensation for the massive drop in the value of their shares. Nissan sold a car on Twitter
A Nissan dealer in Spain just sold a car over Twitter — a first for an automotive brand in Europe, Nissan said this week. Twitter user Raul Escolano used the hashtag #compraruncocheportwitter (“Buy a car on Twitter”) to challenge automakers across Spain to sell him a car solely using social networks. Antamotor, a Nissan dealer in the Spanish city of A Coruña, used Periscope to stream video of the Nissan X-Trail, giving @escolano a personalized walkthrough of the car. He also posted a poll on Twitter asking followers to rate the cars he was considering. The X-Trail received 43 percent of the vote, which Nissan says helped “seal the deal.” The keys to the car were delivered to
Mr. Escolano by courier, keeping the dealer at arm’s length throughout the transaction — except when the car was picked up from Nissan’s Spanish headquarters. Given how awful car purchasing experiences can be, this probably won’t be the last car sold on a social network. And given how terrible at the internet most car dealerships are, knowing how to deal with tech-savvy customers could give dealerships a leg up. There are plenty of places to buy a car online, including sites like Beepi or Vroom, shopping for cars on social media is a rather novel phenomenon. http://www.theverge.com
N332 - Driving In Spain
Advice and information about driving in Spain.
Driving Restrictions for Pensioners
Drivers over the age of 65 may face restrictions on their driving based on medical conditions. Depending on the type and severity of medical failures, the traffic department have issued a list of guidelines on restrictions that the over 65´s may face. The first restriction could be based on distance, with older drivers restricted to journeys not exceeding either 20 or 50 kilometres distance. Elderly drivers may also face permanent bans from driving on motorways, or at night. Drivers may face restrictions in the maximum permitted speed which the vehicle they are driving may travel. The actual restrictions will be assessed by the driving examiners based on the medical evidence but could restrict vehicles to a maximum of either 70 or 100 kilometres per hour. Driving licences will have to be renewed every 5 years for the over 65´s, rather than every 10 years for those under the age bracket. However, the 5 year renewal is based on a person of optimum health, the examination may result in a forced renewal every 2, 3 or 4 years, which may alter after each renewal depending on how health has declined. The over 65´s must also provide a certificate from the family doctor in the case of having been diagnosed with a chronic disease which may affect driving ability, if they have had cataract surgery or heart surgery, and if they are diabetic or taking medications such as Sintrom or other anticoagulant drugs.
Book Review
The Farm by Tom Rob Smith
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“He drove me to the madhouse. He said this is where I belong, in rooms next to people howling like animals.” “The Farm” follows a similar pattern to many of the Scandi murder/mysteries: picturesque villages and isolated farms with bleak landscapes, taciturn patriarchs such as Hakan who dominates Elise his wife, Mia his adopted daughter and the entire community. He thrives on this power. We have an amateur sleuth plagued by her own nightmares seeking answers to the disappearance of a vulnerable child. Are we talking about murder or abduction? Smith presents us with stories within stories, multi-layered. Fascinating. You might remember Smith from “Child 44” (2006) one of a trilogy, the first ever thriller to be longlisted for the Man Booker Prize? Ridley Scott snatched up the film rights and the film has just been released (Autumn 2015). This one is a murder mystery set in Stalin’s USSR. “London Spy” BBC2 drama is currently on tv, Smith’s first drama for television. More than 4 years ago Smith received a call from his father with the unexpected and shocking revelation that his mother had been committed to an asylum. It was alleged that Smith’s father had become involved in criminal activity leading to a sinister conspiracy. She discharged herself and flew from Sweden to London in an attempt to convince Smith and his brother that she was not insane. Smith had the unenviable task of deciding whether she was insane. This autobiographical streak separates the novel from Smith’s trilogy, more typically Scandi in essence, but this one gives it a disturbing and chilling feel and a very real appeal to readers who devour thrillers like myself. How does the past affect people’s behaviour and perceptions in the present? There seems to be a fine dividing line between the truth and how we, as individuals, might perceive the truth. In a nutshell, people and events are very often not what they appear to be. Daniel, a freelance garden designer, the son of Tilde and Chris is 29, living in London with his partner Mark, a 40 year old corporate lawyer, a fact he has chosen to conceal from his parents. He didn’t want his parents to think they had failed: “The memory of a perfect childhood would die, and we’d mourn it as surely as we would the passing of a person we loved.” He saw the concealment as well-intentioned cowardice rather than shame. Daniel was under the impression that his parents had a perfect marriage, they were an unbreakable team and were financially comfortable in their retirement. He felt shame, sadness and disbelief at his untrustworthy insights, the raw truth of how poor they actually were. Hakan Greggson was their Swedish neighbour, a powerful farmer who controlled his wife and daughter Mia, enjoying his power within the local community. The unsolved mystery is what becomes of Mia who abruptly disappears off the face of the earth. Tilde is convinced she has been murdered and collects flimsy bits of evidence which lends itself more to an understanding of Tilde’s own psychotic behaviour rooted in what happened to her during the summer of 1963. It’s mindblowing. “Everything that man has told you is a lie. I’m not mad. I don’t need a doctor. I need the police.” When Tilde arrives in London she is shabbily dressed, her clothes showed signs of

“distress,” her shoes were scuffed, trousers crumpled unlike her normal appearance of being well-dressed and she seemed to have aged considerably. Once she felt relatively safe from her enemies she opened her satchel and took out her documents, photos and a black, leatherbound filofax in which she had written copious notes in order to figure out what was going on around her. When she returned to Sweden 50 years later she felt very much like an outsider in her own country- a Utlanning-a word Tilde felt to be very cruel. The landscape mirrored her sense of loneliness and isolation where “the wilderness rules supreme.” “This is the landscape that inspired the mythology of trolls, giant lumbering man-eating creatures with mushroom warts on their crooked noses and bellies like boulders.” Monsters could easily hide in the forests, their yellow eyes stalking you, like the dreaded elk! Tilde had run away from her parents aged 16 travelling through Germany, Switzerland, Holland before finally resting in the UK where she met and married Chris. “I wanted to grow old on the farm with your father. I wanted to build the home I’ve dreamed about since I was a child. Somewhere special.” She hoped to become self-sufficient, fish for salmon in the nearby river, grow vegetables and convert the outbuildings into rustic guest accommodation. Chris was more pessimistic about the success of this. She recounted swimming alone and naked in the Elk River, feeling vulnerable when she became aware of the presence of a giant elk. The locals didn’t believe her story and mocked her. The incident reminded her of the story of a forest princess riding naked on the back of one of them. She interpreted the sighting as a blessing-they had made the right decision to move to Sweden: “We belonged here.” Hakan, a 50 year old seemed to display the vigour of a young man but the cunning of an older one. Defined by his ownership, Tilde referred to him as a “primitive xenophobe.” He was desperate to expand his empire and buy Tilde’s farm, offering three times the amount paid. Tilde became paranoid that he wanted them to fail and was constantly spying on them. “In the summer of 1963 an event changed my life, broke my life and made me a stranger in my own family.” The real truth of the summer of 1963 is shocking……………… Tilde told her son she was terrified when they committed her. She was surrounded by genuine madness and didn’t know if she’d ever leave the asylum. Was there a conspiracy? A paedophile ring? Was this the deeper scandal, connected to the murder of Mia? Who was Freja? Who killed her? What can Daniel do? “I’m not saying you’re wrong. It’s also impossible for me to say you’re right.” He does the only thing possible, he goes to Sweden to discover the truth for himself, uncovering plenty of skeletons, culminating in an intense and dramatic denouement. Yes, he discovers the truth. Nothing is what it seems. It’s certainly an exciting and gripping novel that will leave you hooked from beginning to end, no doubt about that. COSTA COBRAS RFC START ORGANISING TOURING TEAMS
Costa Cobras RFC have already lined up a couple of teams to come over touring next year, with regulars to the area Old Brods RFC from the Halifax area are going to play Wondervra the Alicante vets team in March. While at the end of April we are going to be having Cannock RFC ladies team and will be looking at holding a mini tournament and looking for 3 local ladies teams to play them. This week we are meeting Guardamar town hall again to organise a ground for these teams to play at, and others in the pipeline for next year. Also to hold the annual 7’s tournament in the area, which has been held for the last 5 years at a nearby ground, but are looking for a more permanent place. Also with both the lady’s and men’s Spanish teams soon playing at the Olympic Games in Brasil, this is a great opportunity to develop rugby over here, specially with so many different nationalities in the area. If other areas can do it with mainly Spanish population there is no reason why we can not do so, so come along and join in the training and help develop the club. This coming weekend, 16 July, we have the La Vila beach 5’s followed by the San Javier beach 5’s on 23 July. Costa Cobras RFC training is on Monday and Wednesday from 18.30-20.00 on Guardamar beach in front of the restaurants and then in July and August from 20.00-21.00. Looking to recruit more players through training on the beach to get a team together ready for the beach tournaments and then into the Valencian league. So come a long and join the rugby revolution with this new rugby club from the start and be part of something new in the area. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier, as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport. So come along and join the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. Also team bonding after training in the nearest bar for a drink and chat, just how rugby should be. For more information about the club contact myself, Dutch, on 692 767 242. Also I am down at Zoco market on Sunday from 09.0013.30, so come on down and find more out about the club and rugby in the area. Also for all of your rugby branded clothing and gear including Canterbury casuals, Cotton Traders, club and international shirts.

Three guests joined 41 members playing a stableford competition at SMGS’s frequently visited venue of Villamartin. The course was in excellent condition, the quality of the greens being particularly notable. The longish set up of the course again appeared to be the main causal factor for what usually happens when we play here, that is that Gold category returns are significantly better overall than Silver, Silver better than bronze. And so it was again, with the added dimension of a clear ‘horses for courses’ day for those in the society’s premium category, with our last visit’s winner Steve Higgins (40) winning once more, and Barry Roehrig, Mike Frankish and Noel Bannon again coming in the top 5, and three of the 4 retaining May’s finishing places. The day’s competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Neil Sheldon (30 on CB), 4th Ian Parkinson (30 on CB), 3rd Ken Frew (30 on CB), 2nd Chris Hamblett (32), and 1st, winner of the category for the second week in a row, Mary Cleary with 35 points. Silver Category: 5th Phil Birtwistle (33), 4th Paul Kelsall (34 on CB), 3rd Norman Cahill (34 on CB), 2nd Mike Jordan (35) and 1st Pat McLaughlin with 38 points. Gold Category: 5th Richard Wale (36), 4th Noel Bannon (37), 3rd Mike Frankish (38), 2nd Barry Roehrig (39), and 1st, with yet another excellent score, new Order of Merit leader, taking over from long time front runner

36 members and guests made their Way to Campoamor for the 9am starting time, hoping to finish before the temperatures soared at midday! The golf course is improving week after week with the green keeper attempting to put some shape into the fairways, maybe he needs a little help with the size of the curves but never-theless it is getting there, greens are also improving although it was thought that they had been given too much water, a little on the bumpy side. Last week at Roda that lovely man Vernon Brown was awarded the “pink ball” for NOT getting the ball to the hole when putting, and those greens were fast! I promised not to mention the “Pink outfit” the Vernon was sporting today, oh sorry Vern. Today he was again accompanied by the Swedish version of Clark Kent (superman) to whom he promptly passed the “pink ball” , Kent (that’s his first name) couldn’t get the thing near the hole and if he had putted better he could have improved on his 37 points considerably.
