PSOE CRISIS: PEDRO SÁNCHEZ QUITS
PEDRO Sánchez has resigned as leader of the PSOE and the party will now be run by an administrator until a new secretary-general is appointed. In a show of hands at the Federal Committee a meeting called on Saturday, Sánchez's proposal of calling an extraordinary general meeting was shot down with 132 votes against and just 107 in favour. His proposed meeting was to allow the paid-up subscribers to decide upon who should be their leader, and whether the PSOE should attempt to form an alternative government to the right-wing PP which remains, de facto, in power following two failed general elections in which it lost its majority. “The emergency congress was to decide both of these issues, and I continue to believe that it should be the paid-up members who decide them – but there's still time,” Sánchez said in his leaving speech. It was the subscribers who elected Sánchez as leader, and a significant proportion of them are not happy with what they consider to be an inhouse coup based upon Sánchez's adamant refusal to support PP leader Mariano Rajoy in his bid to become president – a stance they also largely supported. Sánchez said being PSOE leader has been 'an honour' and 'a source of pride' and that he 'wishes all the success in the world' to whoever succeeds him, stressing that he and
other leavers would 'serve the new secretary-general loyally'. He had warned on Friday that if the bulk of the party wanted to back its direct rivals, the PP, he would stand down as he 'could not lead up a decision he did not agree with'. Sánchez has not said whether he would stand for election in the next primaries, or in-house leader voting, where the subscribers who chose him initially would be expected to select another. As yet, who will take over from Sánchez is little more than speculation. The outgoing leader has gone from being on the verge of realising his career dream to seeing his world shatter around him in the space of less than six months – after the first general election in December, when Rajoy turned down King Felipe VI's nomination for him to form a
October 2016
government and the monarch named Sánchez instead, the PSOE leader looked set to become president of Spain. He entered into talks with left-wing independents Podemos, Spain's third-largest political force, and centre-right Ciudadanos, the fourthlargest, in a bid to form a coalition with the PSOE's 90 seats and block the PP with its 123. But striking a deal with Ciudadanos meant Podemos voted against Sánchez in the presidential
investiture and forced Spain to a second general election. Cynics believed Podemos' 'no' vote was tactical, to force a second election in the misguided belief it would surpass the PSOE in votes and win power itself. Sánchez and his supporters say if the country ends up with another PP government, it will be thanks to its political polar opposite, Podemos, blocking a 'government of change'. thinkspain
CAFÉ EXPLOSION IN VÉLEZ-MÁLAGA INJURES 77 PEOPLE
AT LEAST 77 people are in hospital after a café exploded in Vélez-Málaga due to a possible gas leak. Emergency services say they started getting calls from around 19.00 last night (Saturday) about the conflagration in a coffee shop on the C/ Montera in the town centre, which is currently celebrating its local festival. Around 73 members of the public suffered cuts and bruises, of whom some 20 were treated at the Vélez Sur health centre and discharged on the same day. But at least four people have been seriously injured and some of them are thought to be in a critical condition. Firefighters, National and Local Police, the Guardia Civil and a fleet of ambulances rushed to the scene. Mayor Antonio Moreno Ferrer says the explosion appears to have been caused by a gas leak ignited when heating up food. The fire and the force of the blast blew the windows out of the café, Moreno Ferrer reveals. All legally-required safety and insurance certificates are requested from participants at the fair ahead of each annual event, the mayor assures, meaning a full inquiry will now be launched to find out what happened. thinkspain

SME BANKRUPTCIES IN SPAIN NEARLY FOUR TIMES THE PRE-CRISIS RATE
But a new OECD report notes a downward trend in small businesses folding in recent months A going-out-of-business sale in Madrid. A going-out-of-business sale in Madrid. /Carlos Rosillo The economic recovery in Spain is an observable fact, but the country has yet to fully bounce back from the effects of the crisis. A persistently high unemployment rate is one sign. And the high bankruptcy levels among small- and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) is another. Business creation is also far from pre-crisis levels in Spain, according to the new report A new report by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that nearly four times as many companies with 250 or fewer employees went under in 2015 as did in 2007. “Bankruptcy rates in 2015 were below pre-crisis levels in the United States, Japan, Canada, Germany, Brazil and South Africa,” says the report. “By contrast, they were significantly higher in Austria, France, the Netherlands and Norway, and were over double their pre-crisis rates in Italy and nearly four times as high in Spain, although recent quarteron-quarter trends point strongly downwards in both countries.” Business creation is also far from pre-crisis levels. In Spain, Italy, Belgium, Germany and the United
States this creation is somewhere between a fifth and a third of what it used to be in 2007. Spanish entrepreneurs are less optimistic than others about their future hiring prospects. Spanish entrepreneurs are less optimistic than others about their future hiring prospects. The report, which has been published annually for a decade, includes a new survey conducted in partnership with the World Bank and Facebook, regarding perceptions about the current state and future outlook of the firm and of the economy in general. The survey, which was conducted among companies with a Facebook account, found that nearly half of companies with 50 or more employees and between 10% and 20% of companies in G7 countries are planning to increase jobs in the coming six months. In the case of Spain, the outlook is more pessimistic, especially among companies with 50 and more workers. Only Japanese entrepreneurs had similarly negative feelings about the future. However, younger SMEs were more optimistic than the older ones about their hiring prospects. elpais

PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION (found at: goo.gl/H9LzQ6) to make Dénia famous for being animalfriendly! Every year during the fiesta in July, bulls are chased down the main street in Dénia and into the sea. This event is called Bous a la Mar. Some of the people taking part will jump into the water with the bulls. In past years, when the bulls reach the water they have broken their legs, suffered heart attacks and even drowned. Instead of suggesting the abolition of Bous a la Mar, I believe that there could be an alternative. Tradition is great but not at the expense of an animal, therefore I propose that we
replace the bulls with people in fun inflatable costumes. One of the main concerns about removing Bous a la Mar from the Fiesta is that Dénia could lose a lot of tourism and consequently a lot of money. An alternative like the one suggested above will not only stop animals from being unnecessarily harmed but it will also enable Dénia to thrive during the tourist months, making the beautiful coastal town child-friendly, animal-friendly... Everyone-friendly! https://www.change.org/p/replacethe-bulls-with-people-in-funinflatable-costumes Zoë Gumm

ANIMAL-LOVERS FORCE PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE OVER SHARP IVA HIKE ON VETERINARY CARE
A MASSIVE hike in IVA on veterinary drugs and products is due for debate in Parliament tomorrow (Tuesday, October 4) thanks to ongoing pressure from animal charities, activists and vets themselves, who claim more pets are abandoned or left to suffer as a result. IVA on veterinary treatment and products used to be in the middle bracket, which was 8% - compared with 4% for the lowest and 18% standard – until September 2012, when the standard level went up to 21% and the middle bracket to 10%. The cost of veterinary treatment for livestock remained in the middle level, although went up from 8% to 10%, but for all other animals including pets, it shifted to the higher band, meaning an overnight hike from 8% to 21%. Vet bills have since soared, since these were historically cheaper in Spain than in, for example, the UK and surgeries were unable to absorb the tax hike without running at a loss. And as a result, they are struggling to make ends meet anyway, since animal owners are less likely to take their pets for treatment or check-ups due to the inflated cost. Animal charities say the collateral effect has been four years of fewer dogs and cats spayed or neutered, more animals abandoned, fewer being given necessary vaccinations, and fewer illnesses treated. With an estimated 48% of Spanish households being home to at least one animal, the number of people and pets who are affected by the IVA hike is significant. Once, animal-lovers who found an abandoned dog or cat in the street would take them to their nearest vet to check over and treat for any ailments, before either keeping them, searching for a home or looking for a shelter with space – but vets have now noticed a decline in this altruistic practice, even though animal-dumping rates have soared. The Parliamentary Association in Defence of Animals (APDDA), made up of MPs and Senators have drawn up a non-legislative proposal to drop veterinary treatment into the middle IVA band, down to 10%. The 21% IVA is applied to so-called 'luxury goods and services', and APDDA argues that pets' health is not a luxury, but a necessity. Two MPs spearheading the
campaign, Ester Capella and Joan Capdevila – the latter being a vet by profession himself – speak of the 'dramatic increase' in animals being abandoned or neglected and the 'consequent ethical, social and humanitarian costs'. According to a survey by the Affinity Foundation in 2015, a total of 12% of animals were abandoned for financial reasons, and another 14.5% because of unwanted litters – which could have been prevented by sterilising, although this comes at a significant cost. Capdevila says in 2013, according to data from the researchers Veterindustria, the number of animals taken for vet appointments went down by 6.3% - within just one year of the IVA hike, meaning the percentage may be even higher as time has worn on The veterinary industry is the only one which is not taxed in the same way as other health sector professions, APDDA recalls. Then there is the public health aspect, Capdevila says: the IVA rise has led to 'a fall in preventive treatments' for controlling 'infectious illnesses and parasites', which put the human population at risk in the case of conditions which are transferrable. “The application of an IVA reduction to 10% would only lead to a fall in State income of 0.000011%, but which would be compensated for multiple times over by the benefits it brings,” APDDA insists. And, in fact, the income from IVA for the State may be higher, because more pet-owners will have their animals treated, sterilised, vaccinated and given parasite medication. The Observatory for Justice for and Defence of Animals is just one major organisation which has set up a petition on Change.org for IVA to be lowered on veterinary treatment. They point out that more and more regional and local governments are becoming animal-aware and making it a legal requirement for pet-owners to treat their dogs and cats when they are ill, which goes against the government's decision to increase the costs of doing so. Their petition has now attracted nearly 227,000 signatures. thinkspain

CALLERS CLAIM TO HAVE SEEN DIANA QUER IN LUGO, 200 KILOMETRES FROM HER HOLIDAY HOME
NUMEROUS phone calls claiming to have seen missing sixthformer Diana Quer in the city of Lugo, southern Galicia, are being followed up. Diana, 18, vanished when returning to her family holiday home in A Pobra do Caramiñal (A Coruña province, Galicia) at 02.30 on the morning of August 22, and is said to have got into a car – possibly a black Audi. Her mobile phone battery went off at around 04.15, prior to which it is thought to have been thrown off a bridge near Taragoña into the river Arousa, some 20 kilometres from where she disappeared. The case remains sub judice, which is not helping to curb speculation, given that she and her younger sister Valeria, 16, apparently have a very turbulent relationship with their mother which has led to Valeria's father being given custody of her. Both girls are believed to have been suffering mental illnesses, with Valeria getting regular panic attacks and self-harming, and Diana having a history of anorexia and having been prescribed strong tranquillisers. Even a kidnap for ransom has not been ruled out, given that the girls – whose parents are divorced
– live in Spain's wealthiest town, Pozuelo de Alarcón in the Greater Madrid region, and their father is a property and motor industry tycoon. But this appears unlikely, since in the last month and a half no demand for money has been made. Now, however, a 'significant number' of calls to the police in the north-western region of Galicia, where Diana and her family had spent every summer on the coast since she was three, have been made by members of the public claiming to have seen the young woman in Lugo. The land-locked city and provincial capital lies around 200 kilometres north-northeast of A Pobra, and one sighting places the missing student in the suburb of A Milagrosa. Calls claiming to have seen Diana in Lugo were received from as far apart as Castroverde, about 15 kilometres east of Lugo, and Pedrafita do Cebreiro, some 45 kilometres south-east of the city. Guardia Civil officers in the province of Lugo are preparing a report to hand to the investigation team in that of A Coruña. thinkspain

BLACKBERRY STOPS DESIGNING ITS OWN PHONES
"The first time I made that statement was September a year ago," said Mr Chen.
Blackberry is to stop designing smartphones
"When people ask me, 'How long will it take?'... I said a year. So, it's going to be September this year." In October 2015, Blackberry changed the direction of its handset business by producing its first smartphone running Google's Android operating system, rather than its own BB10 software. house after 14 years, the company has announced.
in-
Once a market leader, the company has struggled to keep pace with modern handsets produced by rivals such as Apple and Samsung. In May, the company's chief executive, John Chen, said he would know by September whether the hardware business was likely to become profitable. Now, Blackberry says it will outsource hardware development to partners. The company has not yet confirmed when any further Blackberry phones will be released, but Mr Chen said on Wednesday that further devices including one with the "iconic" physical keyboard would go on sale. "I always wanted to make sure that we keep having the iconic devices," Mr Chen told BNN. "I just need to find a way to be efficient and be able to make money. I think we found the model." The company said it sold about 400,000 smartphones in its second quarter - fewer than the previous three months. "Blackberry can't keep producing its own phones indefinitely just to serve a small subset of its clients addicted to its homegrown devices," said Ben Wood of the CCS Insight consultancy. "Blackberry had made no secret of the fact that it might shut down its own phone-making business. Pushing it out to a third party is a sensible solution - but any manufacturer making Blackberry branded devices will ultimately face the same challenges." 'I said a year' Mr Chen has been candid about the future of Blackberry's handset business, saying he would consider closing the division if it could not become profitable. In May, he told Bloomberg that he would know by September whether that was likely.
However, Mr Chen has admitted the device, which featured a slide-out physical keyboard, was too expensive to appeal to a mass market. The company has since launched a less expensive touchscreen-only Android handset, based on a phone released by Alcatel owner TCL. March 2002: Technology company Research In Motion (RIM) released the Blackberry 5810 - a phone, email and mobile web-browsing device with a full Qwerty keyboard. Described as one of the first smartphones, it was able to make and receive calls when connected to a headset. 2007: Now featuring a colour screen, camera and an improved mobile web browser, Blackberry handsets became popular in the business world and soon enjoyed celebrity endorsements from the likes of Kim Kardashian. June 2007: Steve Jobs introduced Apple's iPhone. The device is said to have changed the course of the smartphone industry by introducing downloadable apps and bringing an easy-to-use touchscreen device to the mass market. The iPhone was the first mobile phone to feature a "full" web browser, something Blackberry executives are reported to have thought would cause mobile phone networks to collapse. November 2008: Under pressure from mobile networks to develop an "iPhone killer", Blackberry produced the Storm. The handset featured a touchscreen that physically clicked when pressed, to emulate the
7
feeling of the firm's famous keyboards. The device ran Blackberry OS - the firm's legacy operating system, which had been built before the advent of downloadable apps. Critics said the Storm was glitchy and slow, and its web browser paled in comparison to the iPhone's offering. Despite the Storm's poor reception, Blackberry continued to grow its market share until 2010. April 2011: The company launched its Playbook tablet, its first device to ditch Blackberry OS in favour of a new, modern operating system. The Playbook was marketed as a larger-screen "companion" for the firm's smartphones but lacked basic features such as a built-in calendar and email app. By December, the company had written $485m (ÂŁ370m) off the value of its unsold tablets. The firm's chief executives Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie stepped down soon after. January 2013: RIM became Blackberry Limited and launched its BB10 operating system, six years after the appearance of the iPhone. The platform struggled to attract app developers, who were already occupied producing software for Android and iOS and were reluctant to support a third platform. Big-name apps such as Google Maps, Instagram and Snapchat never officially made it to BB10. October 2015: Blackberry released its first Android-powered smartphone, Priv, seven years after rivals produced the first Android devices. Sales of Priv were thought to have missed targets and the firm's current chief executive John Chen later admitted the device had been too expensive. July 2016: The company's first touchscreen-only Android device, Dtek 50, was released. To reduce costs the handset was based on a phone manufactured by Alcatel owner TCL.

CITY DESTINATIONS As a result of its intense historical tradition, the reiterative superposition of cultures, its strategic location as a Mediterranean enclave and its transitional character as a border territory midway between the Meseta and Andalusia, the Murcia Region retains innumerable vestiges of the past, making it an ideal meeting-point where History and tradition have been instilled with new life and placed at the visitor's disposal. The abundant remains and archaeological sites include rock-paintings in cave-shelters dating back to the Iberian period, the splendour of Roman antiquity with its urbanistic refinement and penchant for the theatrical, Visigothic cities, Arab medinas, Christian castles, watchtowers, churches and temples, civil and military constructions...
This ample historical, artistic, architectural and cultural heritage can be contemplated and admired in a diversity of natural settings, in the actual locations where the monuments themselves were erected, or within the thematic spaces provided by the Region's complete network of museums. The Region of Murcia is thus likened to a rich printed fabric upon which History has been depicted for our contemplation. Murcia, capital city of the Autonomous Region, on the banks of the Segura, Cartagena, a port fronting on the Mediterranean, Lorca, the town of a Hundred Coats of Arms, and Caravaca, the Holy Town, will furnish all the reasons a visitor needs to choose them any time of the year for a holiday or just a short stay.

Caravaca de La Cruz is considered to be one of the five holy cities in the world, and a key destination for pilgrims and travellers alike who are looking for an inspiring, different and above all enjoyable place to go. Caravaca de la Cruz is a town located on the border of Murcia and Granada. The Iberians, Romans and Muslims all passed through this town, which has developed around its Castle, built in the 15th century and commissioned by the Knights Templar. However, Caravaca is essentially the holy town, the town of the cross that carries its name. According to legend, in 1232 the Moorish King Abu Zeid was converted to Christianity when he saw how two angels brought a cross down from heaven to a priest held prisoner in the castle in order for him to give mass. This legend led to the construction, as from 1617 and on the site of the fortress itself, of the main monument of this town in the northeast of Murcia, the Chapel of La Vera Cruz. The most important feature of this building is its luxurious façade, made from red marble excavated in Cehegín and which offers a complete exaltation to the Holy Cross. Caravaca de la Cruz, Holy Town. In 1998 the Pope awarded Caravaca de la Cruz the Jubilee Year, making this town the fifth in the world, together with four other cities (Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Liébana, Roma and Jerusalem), to be allowed to celebrate the Perpetual Jubilee. This means that the Holy See allows the town to celebrate the Holy Year every seven years in perpetuum at the Chapel of La Vera Cruz, the next Jubilee Year at Caravaca de la Cruz being the year 2017. However this Chapel, which also has an interesting
Holy Art and History Museum, is not the only religious monument in Caravaca. There are interesting 16th century churches, such as: La Soledad, today converted into an Archaeological Museum; El Salvador, considered to be the most representative work of the Murcian Renaissance; La Purísima; and the Convent of the Carmelites. In terms of civil government, it is worth highlighting the Town Hall building, which dates from the 18th century. Despite its small size, another very important monument in Caravaca is the Temple of the Holy Cross, where the relic is bathed each year on 3 May during the celebration of the popular Festivities of The Holy Cross. Another popular “fiesta” is los Caballos del Vino (Wine horses), in commemoration of a tradition that took place in the 13th century. On that date, the Christian besieged in the fortress by the Arabs managed to break the siege and search for water. When they failed to find any water, they returned to the fortress with the wineskins on their horses filled with wine. The commemoration consists in decoratively harnessed horses galloping up the steep slopes to the Castle. Together with the Moor and Christian processions, these are the main events in the festive calendar of Caravaca. The Uribe Palace (16th century) holds the Festivals Museum where you will be able to live them in first person. Caravaca is also in a privileged position in terms of rural tourism, with a wide range of activities from hill walking to horse riding, giving the visitor the opportunity to come into closer contact with nature. http://www.murciaturistica.es

Applying this concept to the design of our gardens can optimize the space to help make them calming and relaxing places that can aide our wellbeing and spiritual calm. We asked the team at Pottery Barn for their expert tips on how we can go about embracing this idea. in life, including your career. Combining rock and water in the north of your space can create a peaceful neighbour for a zen garden. A bird bath or water feature can add both sound and wildlife to your outdoor space. Darker colours, such as deep blue or black, are important here – ornaments such as frogs, fish and turtles are a great addition to the mix of your garden. North East Adjoining your rockery, a zen garden is a wonderful addition if you're looking to really explore the potential of your space as a haven of new tranquility. Your garden's north east is all about personal and spiritual growth – a great spot to relax and consider things. Streams of pebbles, raked in a smooth wave pattern, guide you through the space between beautiful genista and euphorbia in terracotta pots. A stone Buddha works well as an ornate centrepiece. A reading bench is the perfect destination for contemplation in your garden – build and orientate your zen space around your outdoor furniture, to make that spot feel as integrated with nature as possible. East The east of your garden is a focus of energy relating to health and longevity. Naturally, growth is valuable here – selecting the right plants is a must. Bamboos and ornamental trees provide scale and structure. Crab apple and cherry are also good fits. For balance, the bold colouring of lilacs, hydrangea and chrysanthemums can be used to accent and embellish your space beautifully.

www.soltimes.com A dragon ornament, in intricate metal or carved wood, can also provide an engaging and eye-catching focal point among this newly verdant border. South East To the south east, your garden should be dominated by wood and water. Symbolic of abundance and wealth, a water fountain is a wonderful addition. Surround your fountain with low-growing flowers and aromatic herbs for a natural, abundant feel. To complete your water feature, add golden bells to the water to encourage money and abundance – they are said to be particularly lucky. Wooden ornaments make pleasant accessories to this feature – frogs, tortoises, fishes and toads are all believed to be talismans of prosperity. South It might not be top of everyone's list of priorities, but fame, success and recognition are the dominant energies in the south of your garden. Appropriately, this area should be an energetic space and, with fire as the key element, there's no better spot for a barbecue. Vibrant planting – yellows, reds and oranges – complements this feel perfectly. A fire pit, a traditional Japanese stone lantern, or an elegant display of lanterns can make for a wonderful communal focus point, bringing warmth and light to an ideal spot from which to enjoy nature and appreciate your refreshed space. South West The focus here is love, relationships and peace. Surrounded by reds, pinks, oranges and yellows, the south west is your social space. It's perfect for a patio or deck, complete with a simple and elegant outdoor furniture set for dining and entertaining guests – add a stylish cantilever umbrella for all season utility. Access to every key aspect of your garden should start from the south west corner, allowing your guests to easily enjoy and relax in your space. To complement your social set-up, colourful peonies and euphorbia are ideal, housed in Mediterranean-style terra cotta planters. West If you're looking to use your outside space to become more active, the west is where you should start. A great place for children to play, it's also deeply connected to new projects, pleasures and hobbies – particularly those intimately related to relaxation, such as yoga. Plants should be fragrant, in white, gold, silver or blue, and ornaments can vary – ceramics and quartz in the above colours are perfect. Many people choose wind chimes as an assist to meditation – but make sure they're hollow. Yoga is an introspective and grounded activity, in tune with the energies in the west – easy to learn and simple to start, it's the ideal garden wellness activity.
CONTACT 950 121 936 OR EMAIL SALES@SOLTIMES.COM North West Away to the north west, be sure to craft an open plan and simplistically social seating area. This corner of your garden is associated with energies related to new beginnings, networking and meeting fresh faces – so it's the perfect spot to welcome important visitors into your home and get to know them a little better. Metallic colours, particularly white and silver, fit in well with this energy, and should be considered when planting any borders or potting plants. If there's a mature tree in this area of the garden, wind chimes and metal ornaments make for attractive and atmospheric accessories. http://www.housebeautiful.com

DEUTSCHE BANK DEFENDED BY GERMAN FIRMS
Leading German firms have rushed to defend Deutsche Bank amid concerns over the troubled lender's financial health. Executives from Siemens, Daimler, Munich Re and BASF told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung they backed the bank. "We stand with Deutsche Bank," BASF chairman Juergen Hambrecht said. Deutsche Bank is facing a $14bn ($11bn) fine in the US for mis-selling mortgagebacked bonds before the financial crisis of 2008. Its shares fell sharply last week on fears the fine could cripple the bank, at one point dropping to their lowest level in 30 years. Reinsurance giant Munich Re's chief executive, Nikolaus von Bomhard, told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung that he had followed the news, but saw no need to "reduce our business volume" with Deutsche Bank. Dieter Zetsche, the chief executive of luxury car firm Daimler, also backed the bank, saying: "Deutsche Bank has a great tradition, a solid foundation and beyond that, a good future ahead. Of that I am convinced." Siemens boss Joe Kaeser
said that the bank's management "is pursuing the right goals and has our fullest confidence". On Friday, Deutsche chief executive John Cryan insisted the bank's finances were strong, telling staff in an email that the lender had become the object of "hefty speculation" and that "new rumours" were causing the share price to fall. Reports have also suggested the bank could be close to reaching a deal over a much lower fine of $5.4bn, boosting the shares. Mr Cryan will attend this week's annual International Monetary Fund meeting held in Washington where he is expected to try and negotiate a deal with the Department of Justice over the fine. Last week, the German government also denied reports that it was preparing a rescue plan for the bank Germany's biggest lender - in case it could not afford to pay the US fine. While Deutsche is a relatively small bank globally, it has significant trading relationships with all of the world's largest finance houses. In June, the IMF identified it as a bigger potential risk to the wider financial system than any other global bank. bbc.com

can be seen. Here the story unfolds firstly via a short film, interviews with now elderly locals tell the story of how when the Civil War erupted in 1936, the city council along with help from the Republican Government set about designing and constructing an air raid shelter large enough to hold 40,000 people. During the war; German, Italian and Nationalists conducted 52 bombing raids, the most devastating of which killed 40, injured 150 and destroyed 200 buildings. The original staircase leads visitors down beneath the glass building to a passageway some 1.3 metres wide with a bench running along one side. Supposedly there were 101 of these exits but only 67 have been discovered. The passageway is one of many feeder passages into the main tunnel that extends the whole length of the Paseo de Almeria; the main tunnel is 2m wide with benches each side and extends about a kilometre towards the port. Originally they were dirt floors with smoking prohibited.
A generator provided light and there was a system for pumping clean air in. Directly beneath the city market is a much deeper section that served as food store, in case of a prolonged bombardment supplies could easily be moved below. Along with street entrances there were also entrances in private homes and churches. A black flag was put outside for easy recognition. The designer of the tunnels; architect William Rubio had one such entrance at his home for the public, plus he built an extra gallery so his family had some private space. Other wealthy families did the same. When Malaga fell to the fascists in 1937, 50,000 refugees fled on foot towards Almeria. The German Luftwaffe or Condor Legion practiced their strafing techniques shooting at the unarmed civilians killing and injuring hundreds of them. In response Almeria then built another section
containing an operating theatre which can still be seen today. After the Civil War ended in 1939, the tunnels remained open in case Spain was drawn into WWII. Then in 1945 the entrances were sealed with some entrances covered by the aforementioned kiosks. In 2001they were rediscovered by accident during the construction of an underground car park. The city started renovations aiming to open in time for the Mediterranean games in 2005. Instead they opened the next year in 2006, being now the City’s third most popular tourist attraction. Booking is advisable as due to space constraints only a maximum of 25 people are allowed on each of the 4 daily tours. Or try your luck, as we did and just turn up!

SOLTIMES PROPERTY SUPPLEMENT MORE THAN 5.5 MILLION BRITISH PEOPLE BELIEVE THEY WILL NEVER OWN A HOME
Over 5.5 million British people think that they will never be able to own a home due to rising prices and the cost of saving for a deposit to get on the housing ladder, new research suggests. Some 33% of those who do not own a home believe they will never do so and 39% of potential first time buyers think they will have to rely on financial support from family to be able to buy a property. The survey from online comparison site comparethemarket.com also found that the number thinking they will never own a home rises to 65% amongst 45 to 54 year olds, suggesting that a large cross section of British people have given up on the hope of home ownership. Of those who expect to be able to afford a place of their own at some point in the future, some 36% think that they will have to partially rely on their family for financial support to purchase a house, whilst 3% said that they will rely entirely on their family. The survey report says that these statistics highlight the importance of family financing for first time buyers today. The lengthy process of buying a home also seems to be putting off many who would want to purchase a house with 39% of respondents who expect to be able to afford a home at some point said that the
complexity of the buying process may persuade them to delay or put them off buying their first home. In addition, 44% cited concerns over hidden and additional costs as a point that could put off or delay them from buying a house, 22% expressed concerns over the responsibility of owning a house and a fifth were put off by having to deal with estate agents. As many as 15% feel that they don’t have time to look into home buying properly. ‘Home ownership has always been a great British aspiration but these statistics demonstrate the challenge first time buyer’s face in making that dream a reality. Whilst prices remain very high, it is clear that this isn’t the only hurdle,’ said Simon McCulloch, director of comparethemarket.com. ‘The whole buying process is intimidating, particularly to first time buyers. Fears around hidden fees, dealing with estate agents, lawyers, surveyors and mortgage companies are real and strong enough to put off people from trying to make a purchase,’ he added. The site has launched a new First Time Buyer’s Guide which it hopes will help those trying to make sense of the system. propertywire.com
BANKS COULD SLASH SPANISH PROPERTY PRICES
Banks in Spain may be left with no alternative but to cut the price of repossessed Spanish homes on their books in order to attract more buyers, as part of the Bank of Spain’s plans to force banks to reduce their real estate exposure. From 1 October, Spanish banks will be required to increase provisions against their repossessed property portfolios and real estate divisions, with the regulator planning to increase their property sales rates, which they can only do by lowering prices. “If the banks are forced to increase their write-offs, that gives them more room to lower prices,” said Mark Stucklin at Spanish Property Insight. The Spain property market, which finally now appears to be on the long road to recovery, has endured a torrid time since the 2008 crash in the housing market, with residential property prices plummeting, largely as a consequence of a chronic oversupply of Spanish properties. Spanish banks now own hundreds of thousands of homes in Spain, after accepting properties from struggling Spanish property developers who would have otherwise faced bankruptcy. “The troubled real estate exposure of Spanish banks has risen every year since the crisis started, despite huge writeoffs each year, rising to a total of €84bn (£72.7bn) at the end of 2015,” Stucklin added. propertyinvestortoday.co.uk

PROPERT Y SERVICES
Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platform Landbay has launched a new comparison tool that will help tenants and landlords to compare their rents against the prevailing market rate as rental values continue to spiral. The ‘Rent Check’ facility, which has launched today (Monday), utilises data from the P2P lender’s monthly rental index and allows users to compare rental movements for specific property types to check that rents are tracking the wider market. Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at the London-based FinTech firm John Goodall, said that he hoped the new service would provide assurance to renters that they were paying a fair rate in the current climate of low home ownership and low interest rates. He said: "The UK is in the midst of a housing crisis and a severe supply/ demand imbalance, meaning

FIXED RATE MORTGAGES REPRESENT 4.3% OF TOTAL MORTGAGE BALANCE People love Spain because it is easy and cheap to get to, it has fantastic year-round weather and it has a quirky, but mainstream culture. More than in any other country, people choose Spanish property as a retirement destination, as an investment, as a holiday home - or simply to escape the cold weather. Spain's vast collection of regions, cities and cultures offer something for everyone: From the sun-seekers favourites of the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca, to the rugged islands of Ibiza and Mallorca, or the culturerich cities of Barcelona and Madrid. Spain has it all - and much, much more. The Property Market in Spain While the property market in Spain suffered badly in the financial crisis, this is very good news for buyers of Spanish homes. Thanks to the relative strength of other European and national economies, buyers from outside of Spain can get incredible property bargains. Is your dream home in Spain a villa with stunning sea views? An apartment in the heart of
a bustling medieval city? A secluded country retreat? “Searching for your dream home in Spain takes time and is an ongoing process of exploring, learning and refining. There's no rush, just enjoy it.” Why Buy in Spain? There are many reasons why people buy a property in Spain. Many opt to buy a villa or a holiday home which can be rented to other holidaymakers for part of the year. These tend to be situated around the most popular tourist resorts, such as Malaga, the Balearic Islands or the ever-popular Marbella. Business people often select property in or around one of the major cities. The economies of Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia remain strong. Some people even find it easier and cheaper to live in Spain fulltime and commute within Europe for work. Larger cities in Spain also have fast internet connections making remote working AND living the Spanish dream a distinct possibility kyero

BARCELONA IS SECOND CITY IN WORLD WHERE TOURISTS CONTRIBUTE MOST TO ECONOMY
Mastercard has just published the latest iteration of their Global Destination Cities index. The report reveals a wealth of information about international travel and the contributions that travellers make to international hubs around the world. Perhaps the most interesting dataset provided by Mastercard shows what tourists to key cities actually contribute financially. The study reveals the top global destinations by visitor expenditure per city resident; in essence it shows just how much visitors contribute to the local economy in comparison to locals. Of these top destinations Dubai is far and away the winner. The research suggests that visitors spend an
average of $4,668. It is important to mention here if that number sounds fantastical that there are a number of factors that can affect this figure. Firstly, one should remember that many visitors to Dubai make the most of the opportunities that present themselves and stay in one of Dubai’s enviable collection of world-class hotels. This, of course, inflates the sum of money that many people spend the UAE.
Furthermore it should be remembered that Dubai has a relatively small resident population; in the Emirates as a whole expats and visitors outnumber locals by 8 to 1. As a result this metric will naturally be rather higher than for destination cities more densely populated with
locals. However Dubai is far from the only city to benefit handsomely from overnight visitors. Second in the rankings comes Barcelona (spend = $2,793), closely followed by both London and Singapore. This data really helps to underline the money that international travel can bring into major worldwide hubs, leaving a lasting positive impression on the local economy. It is also interesting to note which cities are growing fastest in terms of overnight visitors. Here Colombo takes the crown. This sprawling metropolis in Sri Lanka has long held an important strategic position along the East-West trade routes. Following closely behind in terms of growth in Chengdu in Southwest
China, with Abu Dhabi coming in third. Once again we see just how the UAE is becoming a critical international air travel hub, not just growing in visitor numbers but also drawing in great wealth from the expats and travellers who pass through. However while these cities may be the fastest growing, they aren’t the largest. As it turns out it is London which comes in top, with an astonishing 18.82 million international visitors expected this year. This is only slightly ahead of the runner-up, Bangkok, with 18.24m visitors. Paris, long one of the most visited cities in the world clocks in at number three. http://www.tumbit.com/
CATALONIA AND BARCELONA
Catalonia and Barcelona has become one of the first tourist destination of Spain, it knows how to please the big majority : with a history among the oldest in Europe, a capital, Barcelona, which never sleeps and an inland full of charm not to forget beautiful beaches in La Costa Brava. The variety of artistic treasures, the Romanesque churches and the great names in modern art and architecture , Dali, Gaudi, Miro, Picasso ... Barcelona sited between the sea and the mountains, has found a formidable balance: a foot in the traditional things and the other in the avant-garde. Barcelona has the reputation of being the most cosmopolitan, modern and avant-garde city in Spain and it has renewed for the 1992 Olympic Games. WHILE IN BARCELONA TAKE A LITTLE TIME TO VISIT CATALONIA LIKE: COSTA BRAVA owes its name of "wild coast" to the uniqueness of the sudden encounter between mountain and sea. Nature, climate and history, the picturesque of its ports and certain villages have been enough to have a world wide reputation. The Costa Brava is a 160-kilometre stretch of beautiful, rugged coastline in the region of Catalonia in the North East corner of Spain. Natural beauty, endless miles of sandy beaches and summer sunshine. You’ll find modern, international tourist resorts with high-rise hotels alongside unspoilt fishing villages, sheltered rocky coves and medieval towns with ancient castles. The Costa stretches from Blanes, North of Barcelona, to Roses near the French border. It has 4 regions: L’Alt Empordá, Baix Empordá, La Selva and Girones. Blanes, a harbour on the Costa Brava, the Wild Coast, at the border of the province of Barcelona, marks the beginning of the most light-filled part of the Costa Brava. The Costa Brava is formed by a lot of little towns and small fishing ports like Cadaqués, which was the residence of Salvador Dalí. Calella de Palafrugell where
you can listen to the famous habaneras in a festival celebrated once a year. In the 200 kilometres we will find little Mediterranean towns like L’Escala, Palamos or Sant Feliu de Guixols. You can visit the Parc natural de Cap de Creus or the Parc Natural Aiguamolls in L’Empordà, the Illes Medes in L’Estartit, the city of Roses and Empuries, the medieval cities like Pals and Peratallada, the ancient city of Tossa de Mar and the beautiful botanic gardens in Blanes and Lloret de Mar. Marvellous beaches and many other entertainments will fill your time in the Costa Brava with an average annual temperature of 17º Celsius, moderate rain and 2500 sunny hours every year.
COSTA DORADA , in the south of Barcelona, it is the colour of gold, luminous, being in the maritime littoral the reason of its name "Costa Dorada" (Golden Coast). La Costa Dorada (Daurada in Catalan) The 20 towns that make up the Costa Dorada cover a marine littoral 216 kilometres long, 786 hectares of spacious beaches with clean fine sand and transparent shallow water. In between the sea and the mountain range there are wide areas filled with peaceful towns and farmlands, where vineyards, olive groves, carobs, hazel trees and almond trees grow, and occasionally even vegetable gardens. The whole area, between; hotels, camping sites and apartments, has capacity for over 500,000 tourists, and receives an average 3,500,000 visitors per year. The large tourist centres along the beaches of the Costa Dorada have developed in recent times upon the old fisherman’s quarters in old towns mainly dedicated to agriculture, and sometimes located atop the hills near the sea in order to protect themselves from attacks by corsairs and pirates in earlier centuries. http://www.barcelona.com/

WHY MUCH OF RURAL SPAIN IS UP FOR SALE
Olmeda de la Cuesta is a tiny community in La Alcarria, an isolated region of deep gorges and rolling farmland stretching between Madrid, Guadalajara and Cuenca, in central Spain. With just 35 residents on the electoral roll, and barely 10 during winter, it is literally dying on its feet. In a bid to attract newcomers, the local council is selling off land at bargain-basement prices. Next summer it intends to auction some six or seven plots. So far, the experience has proved positive. Last year, the mayor, José Luis Regacho, auctioned off 14 plots at €5 a square meter: that’s 200 square meters of land for €1,000. Attracted by those prices, buyers have come from outside the country. Some are looking to make their home in the community, among them a British sculptor who intends to build a house and a workshop there. A Venezuelan woman intends to move from Denmark, bringing the rest of her family. An Iranian who works as a chef in Madrid says he’s going to construct a vacation home in Olmeda. There are thousands of communities throughout Spain that face a similar life-and-death struggle – for example, A Xesta, in the hills of Pontevedra province, in the northwestern region of Galicia, has been offering rents of €100 a month. There is demand for rural properties, especially from city dwellers looking for a weekend retreat. And if demand continues, more people will be inclined to sell, says Elvira Fafián, who runs a website called Aldeasabandonadas.com, which specializes in selling entire villages, as well as individual properties. “Many people with homes in villages are putting them up for sale now that they can see people are interested. Selling was not well looked upon until recently,” she says. The site, which controls around 95 percent of the market, says that demand for rural properties is growing by around 35 percent a year and is “struggling” to keep up. Starting prices for properties are between €15,000 and €20,000, although at this end of the price range, major work will be required, which can typically cost up to €40,000.

Esblada, in Tarragona, which has 14 homes and a price tag of €280,000.
And that demand comes from Spaniards and foreigners. “According to our data, this year half of buyers will be Spanish, and the other half from abroad,” says Fafián. Some communities are already English-speaking, she adds: “There are places where four or five villages are bought by a family, who then bring their friends and create a little community of their where they’re going to find the most properties is Galicia, where around own.” 35 villages are for sale. ¡BUENOS DÍAS ALQUERIA!
Radio Alqueria is once more preparing to assault the airwaves. Jammed and forced to close down by an electronic countermeasures unit of the Spanish army two years ago, the station is now servicing its generator and polishing its lecher lines in readiness for its return. The station is to field a host of well known names including Pulsating Pedro the controversial DJ from Ollantaytambo, Peru. He is known for his rapid repartee and his ability to geld lamas with his teeth. Unfortunately after years of exposure to the beasts he has, by some strange mechanism acquired their aroma. He is universally avoided in the hot confines of the studio where he has been known to steam. Banned from the station is El Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido, the Village priest. As an Existentialist his ministrations have the potential to cause mass depression on a scale greater than a wet Sunday in Bolton. To avoid any chance of lemming like behaviour the most cheerful person in Alqueria was given the task of presenting ‘Thought for Today’, unfortunately this is Loco Paco. The signing of Miguel Pez the well-known meteorologist was a particular triumph for the Radio Station. However funding only ran to one analysis. So the same weather report is broadcast three times a day, seven days a week, Winter and Summer. No one seems to mind however. It does
beg the question though, does anyone actually listen to Radio Alqueria? The first day of broadcasting started with a children’s programme. Everyone knew it was a children’s programme from the mass hysteria and screams. Some badly prepared, patronising fairy tale was dished up to the poor little souls. A survey later showed that the only person listening was Amalia Vega. She thought it was real and reported the existence of a man eating, or rather little girl in red eating Eurasian Wolf to the Guardia Civil. Today in Parliament was a masterpiece and consisted of a badly recorded episode of the Goon Show. Most listeners thought Alquerian politics were coming along in leaps and bounds. Some even commented that they were now on a par with Westminster. Sport was dominated by Rodriquez and his Abyssinian Goat Shirling. This received many complaints as the process of ‘shirling’ was misinterpreted by many and led to Rodriquez having to sign a sex offenders register. The highlight of the day’s broadcasting was undoubtedly ‘Manuela On Toast’. It wasn’t as the womenfolk, producers and censors thought a culinary programme. It was thirty minutes of Manuela at her most bawdy and inventive. Many are waiting for the screen play while other hopefuls are demanding audience participation. The first day of transmission finished with Loco Paco’s ‘Thought for Today’, it was deeply disturbing.

But he obviously didn’t completely trust me. Today –Tuesday 27th, the mobile rang. It was a lady who announced that she was from Torrecárdenas Hospital. She enunciated clearly ‘You have an appointment tomorrow...’ I cut in, ‘Tomorrow, Wednesday 28th at 4.30 to start my radiotherapy.’ ‘Sí, that is correct.’ Obviously she had been told to ‘ring that stupid old English person, and make sure she’s got it right this time.’ So now we are in accord, nobody has lost their temper and Anglo/ Spanish relations are undamaged - apart from my loss of dignity and having to consume a large serving of Humble Pie. The lady phoning me from Torrecárdens Hospital was quite distinct – I have an appointment with the Consulta on Wednesday 26 October at 10.00. Fine, I’ve got that. A different lady phoning me from the same place a couple of weeks later was also quite distinct – You have an appointment to start your radiotherapy at 4.30 on the 26th. ‘What?’ I queried, ‘I have an appointment with the Consulta on the 26th? Is it the same day?’ ‘Sí, the 26th.’ She repeated. OK, I thought, that’s going to be a long day! But at least being in October it gives me time to sort things out before I quit the human race for 6 weeks. Last Monday at 5.30 the phone rang. A patient male voice asked ‘Cho-se-feen, why have you not kept you appointment to start your radiotherapy?’ ‘Because it’s not until Wednesday the 26th.’. ‘Today is the 26th.’ ‘But it’s Monday!’ ‘Yes, Monday 26thSeptember. Wednesday is the 28th.’ I looked at the wall calendar. Sure enough, today was the 26th. It had never occurred to me that I might have the wrong month. The dawn of enlightenment began to spread slowly through my mind. It wasn’t a long journey. ‘Oh,’ I said lamely. I decided Pathetic mixed with a large portion of Contrite was the best approach. ‘I’m so sorry, it is my mistake, I’ve got the wrong month. I thought my appointment was in October. ROAST PEPPERS, TOASTED ALMOND PE
Tel: 950 121 936 - sales@soltimes.com
INGREDIENTS
IT’S EASY TO MAKE PEPPERS THE CENTRE OF YOUR SUPPER. BUT THE REAL STAR OF THE SHOW IS ALWAYS THEIR ROASTING JUICES
skinned almonds 100g garlic 1 small clove basil 50g lemon juice 1 tbsp white wine vinegar 1 tbsp olive oil 75ml, plus a little extra parmesan 60g, grated
red peppers 3 garlic 4 cloves olive oil 1 tbsp
FOR THE PESTO:
I like peppers best when they are deep red or orange, and roasted until their flesh is sweet. Even more when they are soft enough to fall apart as you carefully remove their charred skin. Come to think of it, that is pretty much the only way I like them. They are good to stuff (with basmati rice and vine fruits; feta and olives or garlic-spiked pork ragu flecked with lemon and juniper). Their capacity is generous, which is more than you can say for a courgette, where most of your stuffing falls into the baking dish. Roasted pepper juices are as sweet as caramel with a deep, fruity note A dish of roast peppers is a useful thing to have in the fridge, kept luscious with a drizzle of olive oil and clingfilm. You can stuff them into soft pillows of focaccia and taleggio; fill them with goat’s cheese and folds of Iberico ham, or spread them with artichoke or olive paste and shredded basil, and roll them up. At their best, they come with their roasting juices. This is the treasure that must never be wasted: the mixture of olive oil, pepper juice and seasoning (salt, pepper, thyme, garlic, perhaps rosemary) that collects under the peppers as they roast. It is simply gorgeous, as sweet as caramel with a deep, fruity note. Mix it with red wine or sherry vinegar to make it go further. Trickle it, like the precious balm it is, over your cooked peppers and anything you might serve with them. Don’t be tempted to skip the toasting of the almonds, it deepens their flavour immeasurably. The pesto will keep for three or four days in the fridge. If it solidifies, then let it come up to cool room temperature before serving. It makes a rather fine sandwich filling,

GREAT FUN NIGHT OUT
METHOD
Set the oven at 200C/gas mark 6. Wipe the peppers, cut them in half lengthways and remove any white cores. Place the peppers cut side down in a roasting tin, together with the whole, unpeeled garlic, trickle with olive oil, then bake for a good 40 minutes, until they have softened and wrinkled. If their skins have blackened then all to the good. This is the treasure that must never be wasted: the mixture of olive oil, pepper juice and seasoning Make the pesto: put the almonds in a shallow pan and lightly brown them over a moderate heat, tossing them around the pan from time to time until they are golden and toasted. Don’t let anything distract you – almonds can burn in seconds. Put the nuts into the bowl of a food processor, then add the peeled clove of garlic and the basil leaves and their
stalks. Process to a coarse paste, add the lemon juice and white wine vinegar, then blend in the olive oil, taking care not to reduce the mixture to a smooth paste. Stir in the grated parmesan and set the paste aside, covered, in a cool place. Remove the peppers from the oven and let them relax for a few minutes until cool enough to handle. Peel off and discard the skins (they should come away easily). Squeeze the garlic from its skin. Place the skinned peppers on a serving dish, dot with the roasted garlic. Pour a little more oil into the roasting tin. Stir to mix with the roasting juices, scraping up any deliciousness from the pan, then trickle over the peppers. Serve at room temperature, with a bowl of the toasted almond pesto, stirred at the last minute. https://www.theguardian.com

F O K TAL N W O T E H T Roast Cod with Paella & Saffron Olive Oil
METHOD Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. To make the paella, put the olive oil, chorizo, shallots and garlic in a large pan and fry for 7-8 mins until the chorizo releases its oil and the shallots have softened. Add the paprika and cook, stirring, for 5 mins, then add the rice, mix well and cook for a few mins more. Pour in 600ml of the stock, season and mix well to combine. Cover and put in the oven for 15 mins. Uncover, give everything a good stir, then return to the oven for 10 mins. When almost cooked, remove from the oven and spread onto a tray to cool. Chill and reserve for later. You can make this a day ahead. To make the saffron oil, whisk the olive oil and lemon juice together in a small saucepan. Add the saffron and heat gently for 5 mins, then remove from the heat and leave to infuse and cool. You can make this a day ahead. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. For the cod, put the olive oil and butter in an ovenproof frying pan over a high heat, but don’t let it burn. Season the cod with sea salt and black pepper, then cook, skin-side down, in the hot pan, for 4 mins, then carefully turn the fish over and put the pan in the oven for a further 3 mins, finishing with a little more sea salt and a squeeze of lemon juice. Meanwhile, put the paella back in the pan, stir in the remaining fish stock and cook for 2 mins until completely heated through. Stir through a knob of butter, the prawns and shelled mussels. Taste, season with lemon juice, salt and pepper if necessary, and finish with the chopped parsley. Serve with the roast cod, mussels in their shells and steamed purple broccoli or a green vegetable, if you like. Finally, drizzle everything with the saffron dressing.
Impress your friends with Jason Atherton's luxurious shellfish rice, topped with juicy cod and drizzled with saffron FOR THE SAFFRON OIL 75ml extra-virgin olive oil juice ½ lemon pinch saffron threads For the cod 1 tbsp olive oil knob of unsalted butter 6 x 175g/6oz cod fillets, skin on squeeze lemon juice
INGREDIENTS FOR THE PAELLA 1 tbsp olive oil 200g raw chorizo, diced 3 large shallots, thinly sliced 3 garlic cloves, crushed 2 tsp smoked sweet paprika (pimenton) 300g paella rice 1l fish stock knob of unsalted butter 300g prawns, chopped into bitesized pieces handful cooked, shelled mussels, plus 18 in their shells juice ½ lemon (optional) small bunch parsley, chopped

Meet the Dogs (& Their Owners) Who a fairly large house to a small motorhome Sold up to Travel Around Europe & took a bit of adjusting. I have never enjoyed travelling in a car so I’ve been surprised Wrote a Book About It Two years ago the Burton family sold their as to how comfortable travelling in a house, packed up their belongings, bought motorhome is. We recently had a hire car a motorhome and have been travelling and I still detest travelling this way so can Europe ever since with their two dogs only presume the additional size and space Ozwena who is a beagle and Uluru a fox red in the motorhome, along with slower driving Labrador. Their adventures were relayed speeds suits me. through a three-part series in K9 Magazine My bed is different as it’s raised off the floor and they have now written a book called and is now the front seat of the van but I’m ‘DUST’ that chronicles the journey that is used to this now and this is where I call home. I always feel safe in the motorhome told partly through Ozwena’s eyes. What is it like for a dog travelling in a and the company from my sister Uluru makes it so much better. motorhome? At first it was a little strange. Moving from You must have had quite a lot of preparation to do before your trip. Tell us about it. I had to visit my local vet to get a pet passport that allowed me to travel in Europe. to for me and of course one for Uluru my sister. I also have to wear a scalibor collar as to protect me from leishmaniasis which is a tropical and sub-tropical disease spread through sand flies that can be found in some parts of Europe. More importantly, this also covers me against ticks. Are there any dog laws in Europe? There are frustrating dog laws in Spain where dogs are not allowed on any public transport which In Italy, I’m allowed onto trains, buses and boats but only if I wear a muzzle, this can be embarrassing Everyone travelling Europe seems to have a dog with them and this is partly due to the relaxing of quarantine laws which means us dogs can travel which is so much better than staying at home whilst my parents go off and have fun! And you’ve wrote a book about your travels, tell us about this? I’m a well travelled beagle and have covered over 25,000 kilometres and visited 19 countries. I’ve been as far North as the Arctic Circle and as far south as Morocco. You can read about what I get up to in my book where I was kidnapped in Spain, washed out to sea in Italy and fell from cliffs in Portugal. Travelling Europe really is the best thing that has ever happened to me after realising life is for living before turning to DUST.

With yet another action packed show all fifteen celebrities took to the floor displaying their talents. As nobody was eliminated last week their scores were added to this week. Opening the show this week were Ore Oduba and Joanne with their Cha Cha Cha. I found this to be nice and sharp but the Cha Cha action was too staccato with the basic not driven into the floor enough giving a weak basic action. I gave him 6 and the judges a total of 27 and a combination of 54. Following were Claudia Fragapane and AJ and a Waltz. For such a tiny little thing, this was a very elegant Waltz. As a gymnast she showed perfect core lift and frame and moved beautifully across the floor. I gave her 8 and the judges 32 (58). Next to perform were Will Young and Karen with a Jive. This was not a bad attempt but Will was very flat footed leaving the jive looking very heavy. Nor were the kicks and flicks light enough. A little disappointing and I gave him 5 with the judges a total of 27 (57). Lesley Joseph and Anton were next to dance with a Cha Cha Cha. For her age a dance with great characterisation as only the actors seem able to bring out. She has great legs but unfortunately her upper body stoop spoils the overall look. I gave her 5 and the judges 26 (49). Athlete Greg Rutherford and Natalie then danced a Tango. I can't believe that an athlete can be so flat footed and twine toed! Coupled with his bottom sticking out and a jack-knife position, despite his intensity and concentration there is a lot of work on technique needed. Again I awarded a 5 and judges 26 (53) Eastenders Tameka Empson and Gorka were the first this year to perform a Charleston. Great interpretation and energy but lacking a little more foot swivel for the true action. I awarded 7 and the judges 29 (55). Laura Whitmore and Giovanni were next to dance a Waltz. A nice elegant Waltz with good movement across the
October 2016
floor and good characterisation. For me she was leaning a little too far back instead of cradling into her partners arms. A 7 from me and the judges 32 (57) Next to dance were Melvin Odoom and Janette with a Tango. He tried hard but I'm afraid for me a very weak link. He was not lowered sufficiently into his knees to gain staccato action and was very ploddy throughout. I awarded just 4 and the judges 23 (45) Louise Redknapp and Kevin then danced a Viennese Waltz. Despite a few 'lumpy' moments, this was an elegant fluid performance with beautiful transitions and fluid arms. I gave her 8 and the judges 32 (63). Anastacia and Brendan then danced a Salsa. Unfortunately she sustained an injury and some of the choreography had to be changed on the day. Being a Latino Anastacia has the feel for salsa, but due to the injury this was sadly lacking. From the way she was dancing it looked like a back injury and I hope she will be OK to continue. I gave her 5 and the judges 22 (50). Ed Balls and Katia were next to perform a Charleston. Yet again much better than I had anticipated showing great characterisation and high energy throughout. It was just a pity there was no Charleston foot swivel in evidence. I gave him 6 and the
judges 23 (44). Naga Munchetty and Pasha then danced a Cha Cha Cha. Oh dear! she looked totally lost with a performance
peppered with errors. A totally wooden performance! definitely not her dance. I gave her 3 and the judges 23 (46). Next to dance were Judge Rinder and Oksana and an American Smooth. Enthusiasm abounded yet again from the judge although I doubt you would see Fred Astaire with his mouth open like a goldfish! His Foxtrot needed more attention to detail particularly footwork but some great lift work. I awarded him 7 with the judges 27 (52). Daisy Lowe and Aljaz then performed a Cha Cha Cha. Being top of the leaderboard after last week I was waiting to see if someone so tall could control those limbs in the Latin section and I have to say she did! She had a great leg action but
unfortunately stopped the movement reaching her hips. Nevertheless a great first Latin dance. I awarded her 7 and the judges 30 (62). Closing the show this week were Danny Mac and Oti and a Viennese Waltz. Yet again Wow Wow Wow! Just requiring a little tweaking with his arms this was another superb performance with beautiful lines and extensions. Fabulous! I awarded him 8 and the judges 32 (63). So with a tie for first place between Danny Mac and Louise Redknapp and the bottom 2 being Ed Balls and Naga Munchetty, we had to wait until Sunday evening for the public bottom 2 and the dreaded dance off. For me it would be Naga to leave but the public had Anastacia and Melvin in the bottom two but this week minus the dance off because of Anastacia's injury. Melvin left the show as the lowest public vote. I can't wait until next week but if you want to join us in the fun come to one of our dance classes and keep up with the strictly gossip.

THE MISSING BY C.L.TAYLOR
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“He looks so broken, so contrite, so deeply ashamed that my heart twists in my chest. One of my sons is missing and the other is falling apart in front of my eyes. I have never felt so powerless or so impotent in my life.” Be prepared to be shaken out of your comfort zone. Fractured families, a spectrum of emotions; fear, anger, guilt and loss. This is serious stuff and this is what Cally Taylor excels at. The plot is chilling and the truth devastating and the characters are believable throughout. No matter how well we think we know our family and friends that can change with discoveries of mind-numbing secrets that could explode in our faces, leaving us scarred for life. Ask Claire Wilkinson. Claire Wilkinson is the main character, narrating most of the account. Taylor informs us: “I wanted to explore what would happen when Claire, a control freak by nature, realized she no longer knew the son she’d nurtured for so many years. I wanted to see how she’d react when her family began to fall apart.” It sounds cruel especially when we understand what she has suffered and once the secrets unravel, we see the family disintegrate before her eyes. Taylor presents a parent’s worst nightmare-the disappearance of a child with all the guilt that causes a vulnerable family to fall apart, to make gripping reading. We have a two-time frame, going back a year interspersed with the present. The beginning has a contemporary style using Whatsapp conversation or text talk between two anonymous characters going back to the 5th February 2015. Jackdaw44 and ICE9. The former sets a maudlin tone: “Would you rather drown in a river or burn in a fire?” I know what my answer would be. Neither. To be asked if you would cry at his funeral seems rather morbid doesn’t it? An intriguing start. This text talk continues throughout to show

disillusioned people, grossly unhappy with their lives. It’s up to you to work out the connection with the main plot. It is now the 5th August 2015 and we are made aware of the second tv appeal for the Wilkinsons, Claire and husband, Mark. The golden boy, Jake, 19 still lives at home with his parents and girlfriend Kira who moved into the family home 18 months ago to escape from her own fractured family: an alcoholic mother who was physically and verbally abusive and living with the memory of a father who committed suicide. This appeal is more low-key after Billy’s disappearance six months earlier. It takes place in a small conference room in the basement of the town hall with just half a dozen journalists and photographers present. D.S.Forbes has advised Claire to make the appeal because the public tend to respond more favourably to a mother’s loss. We soon learn that her youngest son, Billy, 15, skived school and was proving to be rebellious and challenging at home as well as at school. He was a master of graffiti leaving his trademark DStroy wherever he went. He craved infamy. “His disappearance has left a hole in our family that nothing can fill.” Claire is hopeful at the start of the novel that Billy will return and that everything can go back to being normal. Too much wishful thinking. However, the appeal did not turn out well and there were negative comments in the press, disturbing and alarming: “They seem like a perfectly normal family but you have to wonder whether someone knows more about Billy’s disappearance than they’re letting on.” For Claire, the stress and guilt prove too much and she suffers frequent blackouts, waking up in strange places creating confusion and anxiety. Taylor’s interest in abnormal psychology is explored here. She calls them fugues or dissociative amnesia, dark and foggy thoughts. She finds herself in Weston Super Mare during
one of these blackouts, a lost and frightened soul. As she says: “There’s a black void where my memory should be.” Despondent. Impotent. Claire singlehandedly goes off searching for her son, frequenting dangerous places with drop-outs:”I can’t just sit at home doing nothing. I’ve started to see him everywhere I go.” Images of a body slumped on the bonnet of her car, a thumping sound as it hits the car, a loud crack and then being showered with glass. Claire hallucinates as she sees his lifeless body believing that she might have killed him. D.S.Forbes drops a bombshell one day; Jason Davies has confessed to abducting Billy and murdering him. He confessed this to his cellmate. It is now left for the police to investigate and discover the truth. A devastating setback naturally. Claire agrees to see a psychotherapist to deal with her fugues. She admits to Sonia that her worst fear is that someone she knows hurt Billy. Her main suspect is her husband Mark and finding out some of his dark secrets seems to justify her suspicions. Would Mark hurt even kill Billy, his own son? Finding a family photo album hidden in the garage with Mark’s face blacked out disturbed her. Who would do this? Who hated Mark? Had Billy done this? We discover more disturbing revelations from Jake culminating in a disturbing text that Claire discovers accidentally:”I know you were sleeping with Billy. I know you were responsible for his disappearance. And so do the police.” The text is sent, but who is the recipient and will Claire discover what happened to her son? Is Billy alive or has he been murdered? “No-one does broken families and friendships like Cally Taylor and “The Missing” is no exception.” Sarah Hilary. REVIEW it by Carol Naylor. TV NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 2016
TV NEWSLETTER – OCTOBER 2016 October is here and the weather getting a little cooler – it was a long hot summer this year – although August was apparently the coolest on record (but hot enough!!!) and September the hottest on record (toooooo hot !!!). Many of you are aware we at Rainbow Satellites volunteer at the Perera (Dog Pound) as often as we can – generally walking the dogs but also doing any odd jobs we are asked to do. For animal lovers it can be a sad place but we all try to input as much positivity as we can and help make the dogs’ stays as comfortable and short as possible. Volunteers are always needed – even its just to sit with a puppy for an hour and try to help “socialise” them – foster homes are welcome as are any donations – it’s amazing how far just euro5.00 can go ………….. Contact us for any information. TV NEWS ……… All of you with SKY HD boxes should have had an overnight major software update recently – I do not like the new software as much as the old software or is it that I am very familiar with the old software and now I have to go on a learning curve ….. Perhaps its my age ? !!! One “trick” that has changed is entry to the “installers page” which is now accessed by highlighting “settings” and pressing “0” ,“0” ,“1” ,“SELECT” – do not go here unless you are confident in procedures but for those of you who are there are several screens that are not available in the main menus – setting the box for one dish cable – changing the RF number – and system resetting. A system reset will set the box as if it has come out of the factory and I believe should be done once a year or so – It reloads the software and reformats the hard drive which can extend the life of the hard drive BUT it will delete all existing recordings and all timers set for the future – but is worth doing now and again – if you are not confident just ask us and we can do it for you. The above really, as the paragraph started, was aimed at SKY PLUS boxes but the system reset applies to all recording boxes – SKY and FREESAT. The FREESAT box procedure is different for each make and model so get the manual out or contact us – BUT remember the procedure
will delete all recordings – make sure the good lady has seen all the Corries stored on the disc! Internet TV (IPTV) continues to expand its services and quality ….. the vast entertainment packs on most systems transform viewers “entertainment habits” ……… it is in its infancy and one of the biggest issues was the ability of the internet providers to supply an adequate service for TV viewing – this is a whole new “game” from the way the internet was used before IPTV with an almost continuous fast supply needed. So often we get told “our internet is fine but the TV will not work” - but clients are judging the internet quality from the emails they send and receive and the ticket they book with the likes of Ryanair – this is not a way to judge the internet for IPTV. When writing and reading emails you are not connected to the net except for the millisecond you press “send/ receive” – all the time you are typing or reading there is no connection – booking a ticket you will be connected for the odd millisecond here and there as data is transferred BUT TV requires a continuous stable connection all the time you are viewing – a whole new ballgame and many of the providers just could not do that in the early days but things have improved and most of the time most of the providers can now supply a suitable service – We have many IPTV system out with clients and yes of course we get some problems to resolve but 95% of issues we tackle turn out to be issues with the internet supply. The problem is the TV goes off or starts “juddering” – call the TV Company but so often it is the internet company that needs calling! MIKE TOWELL'S OPPONENT DALE EVANS 'FEELS RESPONSIBLE' FOR SCOTT'S TRAGIC DEATH
Dale Evans has spoken of his heartbreak after Mike Towell ‘s tragic death. The Scot passed away in hospital on Friday following injuries sustained in a fight with Evans just 24 hours earlier. And speaking for the first time since 24-yearold Evans admits he is struggling to come to terms with what has happened. “I feel like I am responsible, I can’t stop thinking about Mike and his poor family. All my thoughts are with them.” He added: “It has been awful. All I can think of is his twoyear-old kid and his girlfriend and family who won’t have him around anymore. “I feel like I am responsible because we are the ones punching each other. And this is something I have to live with now.” Towell’s partner of eight-and-a-half years, Chloe Ross, and mum to his son Rocco, two, left heart-breaking tributes to the dad on Facebook. On Saturday night she shared a picture Mike took of himself cuddled up in bed with his son just two days before his collapse. She wrote on Facebook:
“Thank you all so so much for all the kind messages and the fundraising I’m in shock. Everyone is so kind. And I have loved seeing everyone’s pictures of him. I can’t believe how loved that boy is!” Headaches forced Mike Towell to stop sparring weeks before death, boxing promoter claims, “He will be so happy all his boxing heroes know who he is, just the wrong circumstances. “The last picture of Rocco and his daddy which he sent me on Wednesday. So glad Michael has his dad up there with him.” The heart-breaking picture came as a Just Giving page set up by former world champion boxer Ricky Hatton smashed its £20,000 target in just one day. The page, which is collecting funds for Mike’s son and family, has now reached £25,000 and well over 1,000 people have donated. Hatton wrote on the page: “Mike Towell lost his life doing either what he loved or looking after his family - or both. “A young boy and partner are left behind let’s make sure they are looked after. Give what you can.”

Due to bad weather forecast for our visit to this sometimes hard to find venue our numbers were depleted, there was no need to worry because the threatened storm never arrived just a slight breeze to make the days play a little more interesting. However the real surprise came from the condition of the greens, I have never seen the greens at Alicante golf so bad, they are attempting to repair them but really they were almost unplayable in places. That said it didn’t affect the scoring, yes of course as always on this course some players find the water more often than they would like but on the other hand some players actually broke par! SAN MIGUEL GOLF SOCIETY AT LA FINCA, SEPT 28TH, 2016. CAPTAIN’S DAY
That time has arrived again when the year’s Captain (this season’s Barry Roehrig) prepares for handover to the new incumbent (Theo Boelhouwer), but before the act transpires both the Captain’s Day golf competition and dinner need to take place. For the former an excellent turnout of 66 members and 12 accompanying guests gathered at the SMGS oft frequented course of La Finca to take part in a stableford competition, principally for the Captain’s Day Trophy, but also a wide range of additional prizes, several of which were donated by kind sponsors. A day with the threat of rain, which didn’t materialise, and a strong wind that did, found the course in relatively poor condition compared to its usual high standards. The greens had not recovered from recent hollow tinning, being sandy, bumpy and slow, the tee boxes were either heavily sanded or with quite long grass, and some fairways appeared to have been cut high, reducing roll. In addition, the course was set up long, particularly the back nine where holes 10, 11, 12 and 13 couldn’t have been much longer for the pros. However, it was the wind, from about the 9th for those going out first, and for the whole round for the tail enders, that created the most difficulty. Category scoring nicely showed up the expected differences on such a difficult day,
BRADLEY BREAKERS
with Gold (lowest handicappers) winners scoring better than Silver, Silver generally better than Bronze. Only two members broke par, both in Gold category, Mike Frankish (38 points) just beating Colin Rust (37) to the Captain’s Day Trophy. Pretty much everybody stayed for the prize giving, some joined by their other halves. Thanks were given by Barry to all those who had taken part, and especially to those who had contributed to making the day such a success. It was noticeable that Barry took enough of the prizes home himself, coming 5th in the Gold Category, winning the men’s longest drive, a nearest the pin on the par 3 16th, and the nearest the pin in 3 for his category at hole 7. Did nobody tell him that on Captain’s Day the Captain is not meant to come in the prizes!! In 3rd place with a credible score of 43 points were George McCallum and Hedy Paehlig 2nd David Valentine and Ken Enever 44 points 1st Mike Mitchell and Clive Peck with an impressive 46 points.
