Spain vows to quickly ratify climate pact
Spain will quickly ratify a global pact aimed at taming climate change, a step which had been delayed by months of political paralysis, Environment Minister Isabel Garcia Tejerina said Friday. Conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s new government, which was sworn in last week, will introduce the agreement in parliament on November 3 so it can be ratified “as soon as possible”, she told a news conference after a weekly cabinet meeting. “Ratification will allow us to participate fully in all the decisions which will start to be adopted” after UN climate talks currently underway in Morocco which Rajoy will attend, she added. Spain took nearly 10 months to establish a government after two inconclusive general elections and several unsuccessful attempts to form a coalition in a country where the traditional two-party system was shattered by the rise of new political parties. More than 100 nations representing 70 percent of greenhouse gas emissions have inked the historic Paris Agreement, the world’s first universal climate pact, which came into force in early November. But the future of the pact -- which aims to cap global warming at well below two degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), and 1.5 Celsius if possible, compared with pre-industrial levels -- is in doubt after Republican Donald Trump’s surprise election win in the US. Climate change denier Trump, who has made no secret of his disregard for the United Nations, pledged earlier this year to withdraw from the Paris climate deal.
In contrast, current US President Barack Obama has been a champion of the pact. Tejerina said she was confident that Washington would not abandon the pact. “It is a change in the global economy which already is unstoppable, not only by governments, but also by companies. We have to wait and see how the new American administration responds,” she added. Spain is one of the biggest consumers in Europe of fossil fuels. The country also has little or no oil reserves, making it heavily dependent on imported oil Oil accounts for half of its energy consumption while natural gas accounts for roughly 20 percent. The country encouraged the development of renewable energy in the 2000s through generous government subsidies awarded by the previous Socialist government. But Rajoy, in power since 2011, slashed the subsidises as part of wider austerity measures aimed at reducing a ballooning public deficit. Spain has the world’s fourth biggest wind park after China, the United States and Germany. Alzheimer’s accepted a donation of 800 Euros from Rascals who raised the money at their Summer show. The money is being used to purchase 34 games to help stimulate the patients who attend the day centre. Previous donations were given to Los Montesinos who purchased 2 hoists with the money and 800 Euros to Age Concern towards an industrial iron. Felipe VI's Arabian visit postponed after death of Saudi king's brother
KING Felipe has postponed his controversial State visit to Saudi Arabia following the death of the Middle Eastern monarch's brother. Prince Turki bin Abdelaziz, brother of King Salman bin Abdelaziz al-Saud, has passed away for reasons that have not been disclosed and the Saudi capital, Riyadh, has declared three days of mourning. Spain's head of State was due to visit King Salman, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef bin Abdulaziz – King Salman's nephew – and the Arabian monarch's son and second in line to the throne, Mohammed bin Salman, in the company of the new foreign affairs minister for Spain, Alfonso Dastis, and public works minister Íñigo de la Serna. The aim of Felipe VI's, Dastis' and De la Serna's trip was to view Saudi renewable energy projects which are seeking foreign investment, and to sign a lucrative ship-building deal. Five small warships for the Saudi Army will, Spain hopes, be built in the docks of San Fernando (Cádiz province) and Ferrol in the far north-west, in the province of A Coruña, Galicia. The contract, between the Saudi government and Spanish firm Navantia, would guarantee five years of full-time
work in the ship-building industry, once a buoyant trade and now struggling to stay afloat. Dozens of Spanish companies were due to send representatives to Saudi for the renewable energy presentation. A SPANISH tech firm has announced plans to send tourists to space within the next two years. Zero2Infinity has said it will use the same technology used in helium weather balloons to float its clients to the edge of space. The trip will set you back €110,000, but CEO Jose Mariano Lopez-Urdiales thinks there is a big market for space tourism. “We are solving the problem with space access in a totally different way. We’re getting outside of the atmosphere using cheap, clean, high-altitude balloons — a technology that is well-understood and mature,” he said. “Some people want to provide connectivity so we will launch their
satellites. “Some people want to get married up there, so we will send them on a ride and the captain of the ship will marry them.” The Barcelona-based company, founded seven years ago, has already performed more than 30 test flights. Lopez-Urdiales has said he will most likely launch the flights from Dubai, where there will probably be more people willing to splash a small fortune for the flight. Spanish police bust gang who smuggled Madrid city-centre 'beach' set up to Ukrainians into UK protest over climate change 'inaction' Spanish police say more than 100 people have been arrested in an operation against a
gang responsible for smuggling Ukrainians into Britain and Ireland. The gang is thought to have smuggled some 6,000 Ukrainians into the UK and Ireland using false passports, said a statement from Spain’s National Police published on Friday Officers had arrested 56 Ukrainians with false identity documents at more than a dozen Spanish airports as they attempted to reach the UK. Police in France, Belgium, Ukraine and Poland also arrested some 50 people, including several alleged gang leaders. Spanish police arrested one leader in March in Barcelona and seized more than 100 ID cards and Polish passports, they said. His arrest and the witness statements from Ukrainians detained for using false papers helped track down others in the gang. European Union police agency Europol, which helped coordinate the operations, says migrants were offered complete packages, including ID documents, plane tickets and accommodation. They entered Poland first and then traveled on to other countries, including transiting through airports in Spain, Belgium and France before arriving at their final destinations in Dublin and the UK. thelocal
Meningitis-causing giant African snails found in Toledo and Andalucía
'GREEN' activists built their own beach in the centre of Madrid yesterday (Saturday) to raise awareness of global warming and protest over what they consider to be Spain's lack of effort in combating its effects. After Oxfam and Greenpeace rapped Spain's knuckles at the recent United Nations Climate Change (COP22) Summit in Marrakech, Morocco, for having invested so little whilst its emissions rose at a rate of 3.5% per year, the campaign group Alliance for Climate (Alianza por el Clima) echoed these sentiments in an unusual way – especially given that November in the Spanish capital is far from beach weather. Around 20 or so demonstrators dressed in swimming trunks and bikinis poured out buckets of sand in the central Puerta del Sol square and laid their beach towels on it, put up parasols and kicked back for a few hours. Spain's inaction in the face of climate change 'will lead to a perpetual summer' with 'serious consequences for the human race and the economy', Alliance for Climate activists said. Although global warming affects the entire planet, Spain
will be one of the worst-hit countries in Europe if it cannot be controlled, with increasing desertification leading to poorer-quality air and greater pollution, crops affected, and natural weather disasters becoming gradually more frequent. This does not mean long, balmy summers, but is likely to involve even more severe torrential rain and wind, and at improbable times of the year. Oxfam said at the start of the Summit – which will run until this coming Friday – that the world's poorest 50% of inhabitants lived in countries which were only responsible for 10% of the planet's emissions, and yet suffer the effects of climate change far harder than the 50% wealthiest who produce 90% of the problem. Air pollution causes millions of avoidable deaths every year, and communities which are only able to eat what they can grow could face famine if crops are affected. thinkspain
Spanish football association faces tough questions about missing funds for Haiti soccer school
HUGE numbers of African giant snails have been found in the province of Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha), an invasive species which not only causes damage to native flora and fauna but carries parasites which can be harmful to humans. The Achatinafulica, which has a shell of over 10 centimetres (four inches) when fully grown, is normally found in the Americas, south-east Asia, Australia, Japan and the Pacific islands, although have been seen elsewhere in tropical climates. Lately, they have been found in the Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, and even as far north as Morocco and the southern Spanish region of Andalucía. In the case of the ones discovered in Toledo, police detected a website selling young snails, and seized several hundred of them as well as warning the possessor that dealing in exotic, forbidden species is illegal. The person in question is said to have handed them over willingly, since he had had no idea of the health risks involved or that it was a criminal offence to possess them. African giant snails are fertile from around five or six months of age, with a gestation period of 400 days, and typically bury over 100 eggs in the subsoil in their first year of life, rising to over 500 in the second year. They cause mass destruction to crops and other wildlife, and can even bring on brain infections in humans. The snails house a type of worm which can be passed onto people either through eating them, handling them, or eating vegetables grown where they have been, as well as through consuming meat from animals which have
become infected. These roundworm travel around the arteries and cause Eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, a form of meningitis characterised by high levels of white blood cells, and abdominal angiostrongyliasis, which is not lifethreatening if treated early enough but can lead to the aforementioned type of meningitis. Initial symptoms of abdominal angiostrongyliasis include vomiting, fever, and cognitive impairment – slower reactions and memory, for example – and then lead to severe head and neck pain. Once the condition develops into Eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, paralysis of the cranial nerves, visual impairment, muscular atrophy and respiratory problems are often reported. Cases of these conditions are rare outside of areas where the worm carried by the giant snails is found, unless the patient has a history of travel to these regions. In many cases, sightings of the worm in the eye have been reported and, although rare, clusters of the roundworm have been found in the subarachnoid area, one of the layers of tissue that protect the brain. In the unlikely event of seeing a giant snail anywhere in Spain, members of the public should stay well clear, not touch them, and contact the Guardia Civil which will send out its environmental team, SEPRONA. thinkspain

Sport minister Miguel Cardenal has demanded that RFEF refund the government €219,500 that he claims has been ‘diverted for other means’. The football body was given the funds after the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010 in which 316,000 people were killed and more than 1.5 million left homeless. “We have begun a refund process, because the ministry does not think the employment of the subsidy given is justified and has requested that the RFEF return the funds,” Cardenal said. “The Federation believes the refund is

But with great parties come great footwear, and with great footwear we usually get pretty sore and swollen feet. In a bid to help us all survive the festive season with two, pain-free feet we spoke to podiatrist, Dina Gohil, from Mayfair clinic DG Podiatrist who tends to the soles of many of London's stars. She gave us her top six tips for keeping your feet in good condition that don't mean missing out on the fun.
1. Wear flat shoes at all times when you don't have to wear heels 'Whenever you don't need to be wearing your heels, don't.' Dina warns, 'Wear flat, supportive, leather based or suede shoes all day and change into your party shoes last minute.' She also recommended avoiding patent shoes as they can squash your feet. 'When you do change into your heels, open toe and ankle straps are the best option because they mean there's no toe rubbing and your feet are supported as best they can be,' adds Dina. And the secret to comfortable but beautiful party shoes? Kitten or lower heels with a 2 inch block heel.

Skeeter’s mother remarks on how courage skips generations and after so much tension with her daughter throughout she makes peace with her and tells her how proud she is of her. What I found remarkable is that this is Stockett’s debut novel which took five years to complete. Definitely a labour of love and a painful and shocking tale to tell. The 1960s was an important turning point in American history

The Help Kathryn Stockett with the Civil Rights movement and the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968. The setting is Jackson, Mississippi, the writer’s home town. Stockett was born the year after the assassination and she was raised by an African American domestic woman just like Aibileen, Minny and thousands of others. Skeeter represents the writer, a compassionate woman and brave. Her friends deserted her and her boyfriend Stuart walked out on her telling her that she was stirring up trouble. In reality, Stockett’s brother employed a black maid who filed a lawsuit in a Mississippi court against him. Her name was Abilene Cooper. A bit of a coincidence, isn’t it? The lawsuit was thrown out and the writer denied any claim of using Abilene as her main character in “The Help.” The last image will stay with you for some time-Aibileen’s dismissal, tears streaming down her face, the rain soaking through her skin. The pause, the reflection and then a strained smile as she realises that telling the truth has made her feel free. Therapeutic. A story that needs telling certainly. Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes, If you don’t know how to get hold of me by now then you have been incredibly lucky or going to the wrong person :-) Today I am going to tell you what to do when windows gets it wrong. I know, many of my die-hard fans will be saying “When does it ever get it right?”. As a coder (programmer) I’m aware of the extremely complex nature of programs. I have spent months looking at the code for the Linux Operating System (Windows – anything, is trademarked with enough legal lockdowns to impress even the NSA). I can tell you that it is an immensely complex and brilliant, piece of coding! Having said that, even something that brilliant and ‘wander off’ from time to time. Any Operating System (OS) will have ‘holes’ in it! The standard solution is to plug these holes with code that by-passes the problems. Every OS worth its salt will send out updates to fill in these unplanned for weaknesses. Windows is absolutely no different! What if the update fails? It does occasionally happen. You will get a message along the lines of “There were some problems installing updates, but we will try later….. Yada Yada”. Let’s make one thing clear, we are talking about a tiny percentage chance of there ever being a failure. For the most part, Windows Update works silently in the background. It downloads updates automatically, installs the ones it can, and saves others to install when you restart Windows. Sometimes, though, an update installation fails and that can prevent other updates from being installed, too. Windows Update is pretty different in Windows 10 than it was in previous versions. Since, in theory, Windows 10 will be the “last” version (did you pick up on the jock there?), Windows Update has gotten a bit more aggressive about ensuring that computers get updated. All available updates (not just the critical ones) are now downloaded and installed
by default. The good news is that you can prevent Windows 10 from automatically downloading updates and, should a bad update come through, you can uninstall it. But that doesn’t help much if an update is stuck in the pipe. Here’s how you can fix that issue when it happens. First try the windows troubleshooter. The easiest way to find it is use the magnifying glass and type in ‘Troubleshooting’ and select the first option. You can also find it in the control panel! So what does it do? It shuts down Windows Update Services. It renames the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to \ Windows\SoftwareDistribution.old, essentially clearing the Windows Update download cache so that it can start over and finally It restarts the Windows Update Services. Search the page for ‘System and Security’, ‘Fix problems with windows update’. After that, it goes to work finding the problems. When it has identified the problems and appropriate solution, You will need to click on the button marked next BUT before you do, I would suggest clicking on the box marked ‘Apply Repairs Automatically’ and then ‘Run as Administrator’. The troubleshooter works through its process and then lets you know whether it could identify and fix the problem. Most of the time, the troubleshooter can successfully remove a stuck update from the queue. Go ahead and try running Windows Update again. Even if the troubleshooter says it couldn’t identify the problem, it’s possible that the actions of starting and stopping the service and clearing out the cache did the trick. There are, of course, other ways of dealing with a faulty download but these have to be done manually and would take a number of articles to explain. Spanish housing market expands 12% in September The number of home sales inscribed in the Spanish property register in September was 12% up on the same month last year, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The market has now grown almost every month since March 2014. There were 30,976 homes sales inscribed in September (not including subsidised housing), an increase of 12% on last year. The chart above clearly illustrates how the market has recovered from the lows of the crisis years, but is still a long way from the highs of the boom years. Resales were up 17% and new homes sales down 1%, though the next chart shows how the big declines in new home sales have largely come to an end. Growth is strongest in the Balearics, followed by Almeria (a small market where a small increase in numbers has a big impact on percentage change), and Barcelona. Looking just at September, compared to last year, sales were actually down in Malaga, home to the Costa del Sol, which probably reflects a decline in British demand post-Brexit. Big increase in new development and restoration projects in Barcelona, say E&V
The new development and refurbishment business has leapt back to life in Barcelona says the international real estate agency Engel & Volkers, whilst also providing figures to show how important foreign demand has become in the city centre. The residential real estate market for new construction has bounced back in Barcelona showing strong signs of recovery and, for the first time in ten years, the number of new development projects launched has surpassed those completed. According to the latest data published by the Ministry of Public Works in Barcelona, the city granted a total of 639 licenses to build new housing, representing a 40% increase over the same period for 2015. Engel & Völkers is currently involved in marketing 25 new developments or major housing restoration projects in Barcelona. A figure that Jorge Campreciós, Director of Property Development of Engel & Völkers, anticipates will “double in 2017”. Land shortages in the city centre have pushed new development towards the periphery, with smaller projects in Les Corts, Sants, Gracia Nova and Horta-Guinardo, and larger projects in
Badalona, Hospitalet, and Cornella.
Renovation projects are the order of the day in central districts like the Ciutat Vella Old Town (including the Gothic Quarter), Eixample, and Gracia, as there are almost no sites available for new building in these areas. The areas of Eixample and Ciutat Vella are where the majority of purchases are made by international customers who account for 75% of the transactions compared to 15% by local buyers and 10% by national Spanish buyers. In the Gracia district the number of international and national clients are equally divided, all according to Engel & Völkers’ figures. New and refurbished prices are now hitting highs of 15,000 €/m2 on Paseo de Gracia, report Engel & Völkers. Homebuyers return but struggle to find suitable properties, says Rics
Number of properties on the market falls again in October as buyers’ interest rises for second month in a row, survey finds House hunters are returning to the market after the Brexit vote but are struggling to find suitable homes, which means prices are going up in all parts of the country apart from central London, according to surveyors The number of properties on the market dropped again in October, continuing the trend of the past two years, the latest monthly housing snapshot from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) shows. Interest from would-be buyers rose for the second month in a row, with a balance of 10% of Rics members reporting more demand. The survey showed a small fall in new instructions in October. The combination of growing demand and falling supply pushed up house prices further, with 23% more surveyors reporting growth than a decline, up from a net balance of 18% in September. Many people will never own a home. We are only weeks away from the autumn statement and it will be interesting to see what measures – if any - the chancellor will put in place to increase housing supply and create a more affordable market.” As the market recovers after the shock vote to leave the EU in June, agreed sales rose slightly last month, with a balance of 5% of surveyors seeing an increase. All regions of the country are expected to experience a further rise in property transactions in coming months. Prices are also expected to keep rising, with 18% more surveyors predicting growth in the next three months rather than a decline. Central London is the only exception where prices are forecast to be broadly flat in the near future. The lack of homes to buy has fuelled demand in the lettings market, where a balance of 29% of surveyors reported a rise. London bucked this trend, with a balance of 15% reporting falling demand. This means rents are likely to fall in the next three months in the capital, in marked contrast with the rest of the country where rental growth expectations picked up, to 34% from 15% in the three months to June. The figures confirm that Spain is heading towards a healthy recovery MALAGA has been revealed as expats’ firm favourite after statistics showed 70% of Andalucian properties sold to foreigners are in the province. Figures from January to July this year show there were 4,978 registered real estate transactions in Malaga, an increase of 16.9% on the same period in the previous year, accounting for 70% of sales in Andalucia. In the same period, the number of sales to foreigners in the whole of Andalucia rose by 18.9% year on year. The figures show the Costa del Sol is still by far the number one choice for foreign buyers. Meanwhile, figures from
the second quarter of 2016 show sales were up in all regions of Spain except Navarre and La Rioja, where they fell 20% and 2.7% respectively. They rose the most in the Balearics (28%) and Catalonia (25%). Andalucian sales rose by 10.1%. The overall picture, according to a report by the Notaries’ Association, is one of a stronger market in areas that benefit from foreign demand, like Madrid, the Mediterranean coast, and the islands. Decoding the secret messages of Spain’s Alhambra palace Spanish team translates 10,000 inscriptions at the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Granada One of the 10,000 epigraphs adorning the Alhambra. In 13th-century southern Spain, or Al Andalus, under Muslim rule, the Nasrid dynasty made full use of it, spelling out its messages in ornate engravings on the walls, columns, arches, fountains and ceilings of the magnificent Alhambra Palace and gardens complex in Granada. Thanks to the painstaking work of a Spanish academic, we now know that most of the 10,000 inscriptions adorning the city are not, as was once thought, just snippets of poetry or extracts from the Koran, but are also references to conquests and other feats. It’s hard to find an inch that is free from inscription in the Alhambra José Castilla Brazales, researcher But the most common engraving is the Nasrid motto “Wa-la galib illa Allah”, meaning: “There’s no greater conqueror than Allah,” a reminder to mortals of who was in power. So says Juan Castilla Brazales, an expert in Arab history and culture at Spain’s elite CSIC School of Arabic Studies, who has catalogued most of the epigraphs with the help of a team of 12 aides after a laborious process that involved locating each inscription, translating it into Spanish and English, linking it to similar inscriptions, photographing and drawing it. “It’s hard to find an inch that is free from inscription in the Alhambra,” says Castilla. “Even the muqarnas [decorative form of vaulting] sometimes have inscriptions on them. I’ve spent hours searching for epigraphs on the ceilings with my binoculars.” Unlike European palaces and cathedrals, Arabic décor avoids human or animal motifs. Nasrid decorations rely on geometric and floral shapes and, in the absence of sculpture, on calligraphy, according to Castilla. A column with inscriptions at the Alhambra. A column with inscriptions at the Alhambra. “The Alhambra is not covered in poems or Koranic verses, because one of the main goals of the décor was to reinforce identity,” he says. “It was a kind of advertising.” Hence there are frequent references praising Allah, such as “Thanks be to Allah” or “Glory to Allah”. To a lesser degree, there are brief inscriptions promoting abstract concepts such as happiness and glory, as well as blessings and phrases lauding the monarchy. Last of all, there are inscriptions from the Koran and poetry from some of the most brilliant scribes of the age. Juan Castilla and his team are now celebrating the completion of a work 500-year-old work in progress: after the Christian conquest of Granada in 1492, and with it the end of Arab rule in Spain, the Alhambra attracted sightseers intrigued by the meaning of the inscriptions. Translations were made of many of the poems, but not of the smaller epigraphs. The first attempts were made by local physician Alonso del Castillo in 1564. But Castilla wanted to complete the task, leaving no stone unturned. “I wasn’t content with just the inscriptions that are in plain view. I sought them all

out.” Geometric inscriptions The inscriptions in the Alhambra are written in classical Arabic, making them difficult for someone only familiar with modern Arabic to read. “It’s an ornamental calligraphy with floral flourishes that make reading it harder,” says Castilla. There are three types of letters – Kufic, from Kufa in Iraq, was the first and is considered sacred due to its historical role in copying the Koran. It was swapped for italics until Granada’s artisans came up with a geometric form, which, according to Castilla, suggests a creative maturity in Andalusia’s most valuable contribution to Islamic art. He found inscriptions in cellars, under stairs and in places that hadn’t been touched for centuries. Asked if there is a link between each inscription and its location, Castilla explains that each sultan wanted to leave his mark and designed spaces according to the chosen epigraph. At times, quotes were invented for the occasion and in some other cases, familiar texts were used. The catalogue of inscriptions has been collected in the Epigraphic Corpus of the Alhambra, a set of eight bilingual books and interactive DVDs that explain the ins and outs of each inscription – its location, translation and context, accompanied by photos and drawings. The Spanish University Publishers’ Association has just awarded the translations the distinction of being the best national book edition in digital format. Reynaldo Fernández, director of the Alhambra and Generalife Trust and publisher of the work, hopes to have the final two book-DVDs on sale during the first half of 2017, thereby bringing to the light of day the last of the Alhambra’s secrets. elpais
Andalucia is the most represented region on the list FOUR of Spain’s top ten most visited monuments are in Andalucia. A list compiled by El Pais shows that the La Alhambra in Granada received 2.5 million visitors last year, and was the fourth most visited in the country. The stunning palace and fortress was originally constructed in 889 AD before being renovated by Moors in the 13th century. Cordoba’s La Mezquita – a stunning mosque originating from the 8th century – featured at number six with 1.6 million visitors. The historic place of worship is followed by Sevilla’s Catedral de Santa Maria and Real Alcazar which both received 1.5 million visitors last year. Andalucia is the most represented region on the list, followed by Madrid which has three monuments and Barcelona with two. Topping the list with 3.7 million visitors is Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, or Basilica, which began construction in 1852 and is still undergoing works to its roof structure. olivepress

Why Trump matters to Europe

In the aftermath of a disaster, it is often easy to think the event was somehow inevitable. Even for seasoned politicos and spectators alike, the election of Donald J. Trump to the White House has surpassed Brexit as a seismic global game changer. Why does it matter for Britons in Europe? Simply, America’s economic weight, military predilection and accidental imperial designs make it a sleeping elephant: Europe always feels its breath on the back of the neck and it is impossible to avoid it when it’s in the room. What happens to Trump’s relationship with Europe beyond his inauguration is actually contingent on how restrained he is by existing treaties, the realities of international politics and his own political capital. He is anti-NATO and against the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTPP) for starters. He has stated his desire to abandon the NATO mutual defence agreement, recognise Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine and wants to renege on the Paris climate deal. Brexit will be foremost in Trump’s mind, if only as a cumbersome reminder that America’s most historic European ally has lost the influence to pacify European partners and advance an American agenda. Trump has been labelled a “joke” and a “buffoon” in unprecedented displays
of criticism from European leaders, but now finds himself in the remarkable situation of being placated with congratulations by the very same people. For the sake of America’s security and trading and interests with the EU, Trump could not rationally launch a crusade of doing and saying as he pleases without ostracising European partners. While foreign affairs are the historic purview of a U.S president, it is not a carte blanche policy spree. Financing foreign activities, repealing treaties, withdrawing from alliances or declaring war are all in the scope of a now Republican Congress. This is key - if Democrats can’t wholly oppose him in Congress, it’s unlikely the notoriously unforgiving Trump could forgive the prolific number in his own party that denounced his candidacy and campaign. As the months unfold, the world holds its breath to one simple question: Was Trump prepared to say literally anything to get elected, or will history recoil at the sight and
sound of America’s new commander-inchief? During the campaign, Trump’s rhetoric was outlandish to the point of misogynistic and racist obscenity and is completely post-politics in a post-truth world. America has had no experience of the rank and file nationalism that swept through and destroyed Europe in the 20th century. That the U.S has had a late puberty with the unabashed demagoguery of Trump and electorally rebelled against ‘political elites’ and ‘invested interests’ is equivalent to screaming ‘I’m moving out!’ to one’s parents. In any case, the Founding Fathers of the United States had the wisdom to separate the powers of state when they looked to Europe and lamented the history of absolute monarchy. This has never been a more prudent or praiseworthy decision.

Mentioning work in Alqueria is akin to screening a Ken Loach film at the Conservative Party conference. The Alquerian understanding of the work ethic is just as alien to the Pueblo’s inhabitants as Loach’s ideas of social equality are to the Tories. But work has to be done in Alqueria, the Village has to be financed. Angela Merkel has suggested that all Europeans should work until they are sixty-seven, you can’t get Alquerians to work after Lunch, before is difficult enough but after, no chance. Apart from the usual retail establishments the only real wealth producers in Alqueria are Poyato’s Remitroot plant and Rodriquez’s olive mill. The latter was once a thriving concern producing olive oil of the finest quality and richness of flavour. With the demise of its owner, Roque Rodriquez the Mill fell into the hands of Roque’s son, known simply as Rodriquez or ‘That B******’. Under his careful management the concern is now losing money and its very fabric derelict. Rodriquez has a passion, Abyssinian Goat Shirling. People familiar with the sport will know it is very expensive, a new set of gullion skrunging prongs can cost upwards of thirtythousand E u r o s . Rodriquez diverted e v e r y
penny of the Mill’s profits and when these stopped rolling in he disappeared the pension fund and then sold off the assets that were still standing. Actually, it’s more like one of those weeks. Or even longer, if you count from the very beginning. It all started when the laptop came over all prima donna, and decided that it would only allow us to see that which it considered appropriate, and personal emails were not included under this heading. I have as much tolerance for technological tantrums as a snowflake in Hell, but Pete has the capacity for patience and persistence that would make Job jealous, so while I worked my anger out by violent washing-up he engaged in hand-to-mouse combat. The daily battles were evenly balanced – Pete was not quite winning, but he was not losing either. However, machines don’t get tired, so inevitably it wore him down. He abandoned the conflict and packed the **** thing off to the 2Steves at Informatica, who have no fear of electronic insubordination. Whilst our minds were being thus exercised by the laptop Henry Zachariah Smith, the car, decided that he wished to be serviced. He stated loftily, via a digital message on his dash, that he wished this to take place within 30 days. We told him that this was not going to happen, and explained why. However, he repeated his message daily, implacably subtracting a day each time. When he reached Day Zero he went into a sulk, signified by an orange spanner on his display

Having disposed of the laptop, and with it all ability to send in my weekly scribblings to Lee at Sol I went to phone Renault and book Henry’s desired service, but without success - I foolishly expected a main dealership would at least answer its phone…..silly me! Thus came the Monday. We pointed a still sulking Henry Verawards, calling on the way into Lee’s office to bring him the news that there was going to be a Biggsless blank space next to Alqueria. ‘No problem, I’ll put in a previous one.’ Lee answered calmly; to him this was all in a day’s work - he is not prone to panic! Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes may be one of nature's unsurpassed sources of betacarotene. Several recent studies have shown the superior ability of sweet potatoes to raise our blood levels of vitamin A. This benefit may be particularly true for children. In several studies from Africa, sweet potatoes were found to contain between 100-1,600 micrograms (RAE) of vitamin A in every 3.5 ounces—enough, on average, to meet 35% of all vitamin A needs, and in many cases enough to meet over 90% of vitamin A needs (from this single food alone). Method
Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the sweet potato and butternut squash on a baking tray and add the honey and a drizzle of olive oil. Roast for 40-4 5 mins until soft and star ting to caramelise at the edges, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, fry the onions in 1 tbsp olive oil until soft, then add the garlic, chicken stock, cinnamo n and nutmeg. Bring to the boil, and simmer for 5 mins. Remove the sweet potatoes and butternut squash from the oven and add to the pan with the stock. Blend ever ything until smooth using a stick blender. Stir in most of the cream and bring back to a gentle simmer, and season with salt and pepper to taste. To make the lemon & garlic toas ts, gently warm the olive oil and garlic in a pan over a low hea t for a few mins; the garlic should be softened but not brow ned. Remove from the heat and mix in the butter and lemon zest until smooth. Leave to cool, then stir in the chives and thym e. Toast the ciabatta slices, and top each with a spoonful of garlic butter. Serve with the soup, drizzled with the remaining cream, and some black pepper.

Think before you shop Before you can know what you need (note: need not fancy), you have to know what you already have, right? Your shopping list should contain all your weekly basics and all the extras to make the meals you’re likely to have that week. And DON’T go shopping when you’re hungry. Know your fridge It’s well worth taking stock of what is in your fridge on a regular basis so you don’t waste any tasty treats. Valencia Prepares for Annual Culinary Conference
Fifty prestigious chefs are sharpening their knives for upcoming culinary c o n f e r e n c e Gastrónoma 2016. Held from November 19-21st at the Feria Valencia convention center, Gastrónoma 2016 will be welcoming some fifty chefs from all over. Specifically, the conference boasts the participation of a prestigious group of different professionals representing and contrasting the flavors of the Mediterranean with those of the Atlantic – one of the central themes of this event. They include, Ricard Camarena, Kiko Moya and María José San Román, in the name of the Mediterranean; and Iván Domínguez, Iago Pazos and Julio Vázquez representing Atlantic cuisine. For three days, these chefs and others will share their experiences through a series of talks that will also touch on a range of other culinary topics. Additional themes that will take center stage at Gastrónoma 2016 will include those having to do with artisanal bread making and rice mastery, with chefs representing important restaurants known for their excellent rice dishes, including Boga, La Granja, Las Bairetas, Dársena, La Marítima, Casa Carmina, Cachito and Casa Rocher. Other activities that will fill the agenda of this three-day affair will include a 50-meter bar that will offer visitors the chance to snack on haute cuisine tapas, workshops on broth-making for both adults and children, the Entreolivas space dedicated to olive oil, the Cóctel Club and an area devoted to craft beers. Additionally, there will be a 10,000 meter-space dedicated to the exposition of different, quality foods and wines, and other goods related to the restaurant and hospitality industries. Andalunglish’: the English words Spaniards have borrowed from Gibraltar
University student María Ortega has preserved disappearing words spoken in La Línea de la Concepción In La Línea de la Concepción, the town in Andalusia’s Cadiz province neighboring Gibraltar, locals looking for a low-cost meal will buy a tin of carne conbí; children play with meblis and they chew chinga. Similarly, a panquequi requires bequinpauda. University student and linguist María Ortega has collected these and other words once widely used by Spaniards living in the proximity of the Rock: corned beef, marbles, chewing gum, plumcakes and baking powder. Ortega, a graduate of Granada University, says that linguists have studied the influence of Spanish on the English spoken in Gibraltar, known
as llanito, but that there has been little research in to how English has influenced Spanish in the areas neighboring the British Overseas Territory. “This ‘language’ was born from the union of two communities,” she says, adding: “I started working on this believing that many words would have been lost because of the closure of the frontier between Gibraltar and Spain between 1969 and1982, as well as the effects of globalization.” The 22-year-old started out by selecting 15 words and expressions taken from the English spoken in Gibraltar, among them, infleita (bicycle pump), rolipó (lollypop), washi (a dip in the sea), ámbo (handball), kaite (kite), and focona (a reference to the four corners, a term used to describe the border crossing. ‘Andalunglish’: the English words Spaniards have borrowed from Gibraltar Ortega set about collecting words taken from English by some 20 people who represented a cross-section of Spanish society in La Linea de la Concepción. For example, she would show her subjects liquorice, which is known locally as liquibá, or knitting needles and wool, some of whom told her this was nitin. Ortega concludes that despite the continuing close contact between La Línea and Gibraltar,

Their first production, Mark Camoletti’s ‘Don’t Dress for Dinner’ performed at the Cultural centre in Benijofar earlier this year was extremely well received. On this occasion A.C.T.S. had chosen ‘Wife After Death’ by Eric Chappell. It was also staged in Benijofar on three nights recently with a donation being made to the Benijofar Crisis Appeal. The play was directed by Sue Stabler and Albert Stokes. Eric Chapple was a prolific BAFTA winning writer creating plays and scripts for both the theatre and television. He is perhaps best known to most of us as the author of the award winning television series ‘Rising Damp’, starring Leonard Rossiter, Francis de la Tour and Paul Jones. ‘Wife After Death’ is one of those plays with what appears to be a very simple and straightforward idea. Comedian and ‘national treasure’ Dave Thursby has died and his friends and former colleagues are gathered together with his wife in his home to pay their respects. It all sounds rather dull and predictable, however all is not what it seems. Appearances can be deceptive and as the play progresses the relationships the characters had with Dave are exposed and his
revealed. All of this is added to and to some extent catalysed by the arrival at the funeral of a mysterious lady. She turns out to be, not just a former wife of Dave Thursby, but the only legal wife as their marriage was never officially ended. The play opens with Harvey (Dave’s scriptwriter) played by Ian Vallender talking with his wife, Vi played by Michelle Edwards and reflecting on his relationship with Dave. Harvey sees himself as Dave’s best friend and close confidant. Little does he know his wife was having an affair with his supposedly best pal. It is also revealed to him that far from being his friend Dave didn’t like Harvey at all and was about to drop him as his scriptwriter. We are then introduced to Dave’s manager, Kevin, played by Keith Woznica and Dave’s wife Jane played by Lesley Luker. Kevin like Harvey is a man with an exaggerated sense of his own importance believing he was responsible for Dave’s success, fame and fortune. Unfortunately it appears that Dave also had no time for Kevin and was about to fire him as his manager. To make matters worse Kevin’s wife Jane was also having an affair with Dave. As the curtain comes down at the end of the first act Harvey is heard to say ‘do we ever truly know anything about anyone’. In contrast Dave’s wife Laura played by Robin Smith, appears to be unaffected by her husband’s bad behaviour but the arrival of Kay played by Eileen Hamilton puts an end to that. Kay reveals that she is
younger Spaniards are less likely to use words of Gibraltarian origin. She says this is because the cultural influence of Gibraltar is waning, and also because other English terms are now used: bequi has disappeared, to be replaced by bacon. After spending a year in the United States as a teaching assistant, Ortega is now taking her Master’s degree in Madrid, specializing in teaching Spanish to foreigners. S h e describes Dave’s early career and his ruthless self-seeking ambition; a severe contrast to the charitable works and well-loved stature of his later life. With relatively few actors and long wordy dialogue this is not an easy play to pull off. Described as a comedy there are indeed many funny moments in a beautifully crafted script. Many of them though are bittersweet and certainly make the audience reflect on what constitutes the true nature of relationships and how well we know our friends and acquaintances. There were very good performances from all the cast who were also well balanced acting together and produced highly believable characters . We must not forget either all those working behind the scenes and front of house. The set was wonderfully executed and lit and as usual with this group the front of house management was warm and efficient. Once again all credit to A.C.T.S. for putting on another first class production which was clearly enjoyed by the packed audiences. By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’ With a coveted place at stake for Blackpool next week it was all on the line. Who would fail? Opening this week’s show were Daisy Lowe and Aljaz with a Salsa. This wasn’t her dance, her upper body was too stiff and she looked a bit wooden but she performed some nice tricks. An 8 from me and 31 from the judges. Next were Greg Rutherford and Natalie with a Paso Doble. A nice staccato performance with some
good Paso Doble steps but he needed a much higher hip line to truly pull off the Paso stature. I awarded 8 and the judge 31. Judge Rinder and Oksana followed with a Foxtrot. This was nicely danced if a bit of a roller coaster in places instead of the nice fluid flat slide and glide action, but well led and good characterisation. I
with Daisy leaving the show on a 3 to 1 verdict after the dance off. So Blackpool here we come. Who will be able to fill that huge space? Who will falter? I can’t wait to see it. In the meantime come and join one of our classes to keep up with the strictly gossip.

The launch show of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! is always something of a non event, the Iceland platter before the Aunt Bessie's main course, if you will. You know how it is: the celebrities tend to put on a good show at this early stage, cajoling each other along and generally having a laugh. With that in mind, it's tricky to draw any firm conclusions about the dynamic of the camp but it's difficult to see how Larry Lamb and Scarlett Moffatt won't be major players throughout the series. If I was a betting man, I'd put at least one sleeve from the shirt off my back that they will both make the final. Larry was charm personified as he rescued Scarlett from a tough spot during that disastrous canoe trip, before he tackled the chores in camp with a gusto that belied his 70 years. Scarlett, meanwhile, has a similar boisterous energy to last year's winner Vicky Pattison and just as many superb one-liners. They’re the ones to watch.

Early on, Carol Vorderman was on crac king form: amusing and up for the challenge. But as the programme wore on, I began to ques tion how authentic all that “hardcore” bravado really was. Gareth Southgate took a significant step towards being appointed England's full-time manager and intensified the pressure on Scotland counterpart Gordon Strachan in the process with a comfortable World Cup qualifying win at Wembley. Southgate knew victory would press his claims to succeed Sam Allardyce on a permanent basis - and England delivered with a display that was unconvincing but easily enough to beat Scotland. Daniel Sturridge's stooping, instinctive header from Kyle Walker's driven cross put the hosts ahead after 24 minutes and Liverpool team-mate Adam Lallana did the same from Danny Rose's delivery five minutes after the break. James Forrest and Robert Snodgrass missed opportunities for the visitors before Lallana added England's second - and Gary Cahill's 61st-minute header from Wayne Rooney's corner only increased Strachan's agony. England now top Group F while Scotland languish in fifth, with their hopes of qualifying for the 2018 tournament in Russia fading fast. England's interim manager deflected all talk about his future in the build-up to this qualifier - but he will know he is effectively in an impregnable position after this win against a very average Scotland side. Southgate's biggest supporters would be hardpressed to suggest this performance hinted at a golden future for England, but it is surely enough to earn the 46-year-old the chance to plot the way ahead to the next World Cup.
It was almost impossible to find an optimistic Scot at Wembley before kick-off. Sadly, their worst fears were confirmed as the pressure mounts on Strachan. The combative 59-year-old was subjected to heavy criticism after a draw at home to Lithuania and a 3-0 loss in Slovakia even before this latest reverse. There was no lack of heart or effort from Scotland, but there is quite simply a lack of quality in their squad, reflected in the eight changes he made here, to no avail, in an attempt to find a spark. Strachan may ask, with some justification, if anyone else could do better with what he has at his disposal, but whether the Scottish Football Association and Tartan Army agree is another matter. England are now in a commanding position and should have no problems reaching the World Cup from this point, but they are still a work in progress. This was a convincing victory margin, but the worry remains that the defence would be seriously troubled by quality opposition. Scotland missed two chances to level before England extended their lead through Lallana, while some of their attempts to play out from the back looked like an alien concept to Southgate's players. However, the result, England's position in the group, Lallana's growing maturity and the clinical manner in which they took their opportunities were all positives. Scotland's mix-and-match side never looked like having the class to overcome England and that lack of quality was exposed in crucial moments. Leigh Griffiths wasted a glorious opportunity to play in Snodgrass in the first half, while Forrest should have scored with a shot he dragged wide just after half-time. Snodgrass also had a shot blocked by Stones. Scotland's commitment cannot be doubted but this is a squad desperately short of quality - and so it proved at Wembley.

Already without key players Boudia and Koko through suspension Mazarron suffered a further blow when the home team took the lead in the fourth minute. A through ball found Salvador clear on the right and, with the Mazarron defenders vainly appealing for offside he rounded Juan Pedro before placing the ball into the empty net. Things got worse for Mazarron when the influential Jimmy was injured after just eight minutes and had to be replaced by Cesar. Cesar saw another dangerous cross just elude the onrushing Raul and Jose before Alcantarilla surged forward in the closing stages in attempt to score the winner. After 80 minutes a left wing corner was scrambled off the line by Mazarron and Juan Pedro made two saves from long range efforts before Alcantarilla spurned the best chance of the game just before the end. A cross from the left was missed by Juan Pedro but Miguel blazed over the bar from just three yards. A draw was a fair result on the balance of play in a game which neither side deserved to lose. EUROGOLF POPPY DAY TEXAS SCRAMBLE
On Thursday November 10th Eurogolf played a Texas Scramble and all the match fees went towards The Royal British Legions’ Poppy Day appeal. After the match members and guests sat down to a sumptuous meal in the Clubhouse and members meals were subsidised by the society. Before the meal one of the members Steve Sayers who served in the army for many years and wore his many medals for various tours of duty gave a reading and 2 minutes silence was held in remembrance of those soldiers who had lost their lives whilst serving their country. There were also games such as guess the weight of the cake, find the treasure and guess who the babies were to help raise more funds for the appeal. Diane Budd from the RBL was presented with a cheque by Captain Debbie Weedon for €371 plus she was given the collection box which she let us know at a later date how much money it contained. COSTA COBRAS RFC CHARITY SHIRT PRESENTATION
This week Costa Cobras RFC presented Walter of the Shamrock Bar in Guardamar with the winning Ireland ladies international 7’s shirt that he had won in the DEBRA raffle draw the weekend before. Also Costa Cobras RFC have had for the moment changed their training times and place to accommodate the players working arrangements. For now we are training from 20.3022.00 on Monday and Wednesday at Dolores sports ground. The first training there we got along 6 players, so not a bad start. This week we are supposed to be having a meeting with Guardamar to hopefully finalise the pitch and accommodation and then finalise the touring teams that have asked to come over to the area. We have also been invited to go on Big FM sports programme this coming Saturday sometime between 16.00 and 17.00 to talk about the club and rugby in the area. We are hoping to recruit more players through training at Dolores to get a team together to put into the Valencian league next year and enter the 7’s tournaments in the area next summer, and build up from there. So come along and join the rugby revolution with this new rugby club from the start and be part of something new in the area. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome, from beginners to
experienced players, the more the merrier, as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport. So come along and join the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. San Javier Golf Society Captain’s Charity Day For Mabs
For this year’s Captain’s Charity Golf Day, San Javier Golf Society Captain David Archer chose to support MABS Cancer Support Charity. As well as the fundraising day itself, a specific online donations page was set up, to enable people who couldn’t attend the event, to contribute online. The golf day on Monday 7th November, was well attended by the membership of the society at their home course (La Serena Golf) in Los Alcazares. The weather was sunny but slightly breezy as everyone started teeing off to compete for the Captain’s Charity
Day Trophy, in a combined pairs stableford competition. The eventual winners were Mick Hardy and Bob Eaton, with a creditable combined score of 64 points. There were prizes for the first three pairs and it is heartening to report that all 6 players who received cash prizes, immediately donated their winnings back into the overall charity “pot”. In total, the sum of 566 euros was raised and thanks must go to everyone concerned for taking part, organising, fund raising, donating and generally supporting this very worthwhile cause!
