TV NEWSLETTER

december 2016

ort Following on from last month’s newsletter we went to see Swan Lake Ballet performed by The Moscow Company at the El Batel theatre in Cartagena. It was my first Ballet and I have to say I was spellbound – another soon! Should I now try an Opera? Gregory Porter, Madeleine Peyroux, The Black Heritage Choir sings Aretha Franklin, Remember Queen and the film (in English) The Girl on the Train are all booked before Christmas – busy culture time for RAINBOW ! Talking of Christmas we at RAINBOW SATELLITES would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a very happy festive season and hope that 2017 will bring you all you wish for. And for all the regular readers Rainbow Garden, Rainbow Pets and Rainbow House are all doing well – Molly the foster dog goes to Germany on 9th December so that will be an emotional day – we have had her some 5 months and naughty pup as she is we will miss her. TV News …………. Just a few words about IPTV (internet TV systems) – nearly all these TV systems are run by fairly small companies with, at the most, a few thousand subscribers – we are not SKY with some 15 million plus subscribers and the money that goes with that. I think most IPTV suppliers do a really good job but there will be the odd issue – it is difficult to monitor a few hundred TV channels, box sets and films so if you are a subscriber tell us of any issue you find and we will correct it as soon as possible. For the best possible TV we all need to work together – remember you are not paying anything like the rates that those millions of SKY subscribers do ! There are many ways to watch TV over the internet but please look at what you intend to buy before you buy it. Android boxes, fire sticks, Chromecasts are all very well if

you are really computer literate, don’t mind “playing” with screens and keyboards and are happy to spend minutes changing from one channel to another. Real IPTV is NOT like that with easy to use digiboxes giving TV just like you are used to getting it from satellite or terrestrial sources. Sit down, select ITV and watch it ! - Just check and ask for a demonstration before you buy – this is not a system to be purchased from the bloke in the pub or the man on the market stall. Viewers receiving TV signals from a satellite based system will have seen a slight improvement in signal strengths with the cooler weather attenuating signals a little less and the resulting more stable viewing and possibly some channels returning that were lost in the late spring as the air warmed up. However be aware that next May/June the situation will again go back to the weaker signals - the only answer is a bigger dish or internet TV. Have you picked up this article on a visit down to southern Spain to look for a property ? Before you do finally buy use a reputable TV installer to check that UK TV will be available in the new purchase …….. it’s too late once you own it and find that for various reasons UK TV is not possible - and so many times I have heard it said “we are not coming for TV” - but Spanish winters are long, chilly and have dark evenings ! It is not all Sun, Sea and Sangria! Article sponsored by RAINBOW SATELLITES the Murcian company for all your TV needs. www.soltimes.com to pump cash into the wider economy, says Ernst & Young, noting that the average Chinese tourist spends an average of €960 on each shopping-focused trip, while visitors from Hong Kong spend more than €1,000, and the US traveller, €672. On the basis of this data, the report advises the industry to “give Spain’s image a makeover as a tourist destination, marketing it to high-end clients, which will allow for more substantial revenue”. In other words, Spain needs to sell itself as a premium destination, targeting new markets and shifting the focus away from the UK and Germany.

Why Spain is still failing to attract high-end tourists Spain is on track for a record year of overseas tourists, with official forecasts predicting 74 million foreigners will have visited the country by the end of 2016, but 90% of them will be thrifty Europeans looking for a low-cost stay in the sun. Spain is still not making much of an effort to attract more visitors from Asia and the Middle East, nor has it been successful in selling itself as a desirable destination for wealthier visitors from the United States and Europe. The industry can only look on as other countries scoop the lion’s share of the high-end global tourist market –the Chinese, US and Saudi tourists with extravagant holiday spending habits. If Spain does want a share of the spoils, says a new study by Ernst & Young, it will have to begin “unashamedly” targeting these markets with a coordinated game plan. With this in mind, the consultancy calls for more spending on marketing, better coordination between government agencies and a change of strategy to package Spain as offering more than just sunshine, beaches, bullfighting and parties. It points out that Europeans make up 89.4% of the total number of visitors, but that they spend on average just €135 a day. Moreover, the average tourist in Spain is spending less, a trend only compensated for by the increase in numbers. Instead, it is non-European visitors who are likely

Of the 116 million Chinese who took overseas holidays in 2015, only 0.3% came to Spain; of the 68 million US nationals on the move, that figure was 2.6%. Madrid has just 16 flights a week to China, while it has 68 to Paris, 66 to London and 62 to Frankfurt. The study also points out that for every tourist euro spent on duty free goods in Spain, €7.3 are left behind in Paris and €6.2 in London. Spain’s luxury goods sector is described as “still very basic”, and the sector is advised to “adopt a strategy that will unashamedly attract the premium-profile tourist.” The report urges the creation of more exclusive offers, with services adapted to the needs of specific countries and the establishment of chains of luxury hotels, such as the US Four Seasons brand. Low-spending Europeans make up 90% of visitors to Spain Identifying new promotional tools, including more investment in online strategies, strengthening coordination between regional governments, working more closely with the private sector and increasing spending on advertising, the study came up with ideas to inform non-European tourists of Spain’s other qualities. It also noted that the budget for Turespaña, the

organization tasked with promoting Spain as a tourist destination abroad, fell from €224 million in 2009 to €91.7 million in 2016, with just 40.6% invested in advertising. Similarly, in a country where tourism accounts for 11% of GDP and 12% of employment, investment in tourism is relatively low – the Canary Islands invest just 0.9% of its overall budget on tourism, even though the sector accounts for 31.2% of its GDP. Finally, the report accuses Spain of complacency, in part due to having been chosen by visitors wary of destinations in the southern Mediterranean. It notes shortfalls in key areas such as cleanliness, safety, information technology, and language skills, while pointing out that in some cities visitor numbers are becoming unsustainable: in Barcelona, at any given time there are 4.4 tourists for every resident, and that’s without counting cruise-liner passengers or people staying in Airbnb-type apartments. Ernst & Young says the city is so overwhelmed that it faces the danger of residents moving out of the city center, which in the long-term would make Barcelona less attractive. “Saturation is a sure-fire way of wearing a destination out,” it concludes. December 2016

Most people in Spain go to Midnight Mass or ‘La Misa Del Gallo’ (The Mass of the Rooster). It is called this because a rooster is supposed to have crowed the night that Jesus was born. Most families eat their main Christmas meal on Christmas Eve before the service. The traditional Spanish Christmas dinner is ‘Pavo Trufado de Navidad’ which is Turkey stuffed with truffles (the mushrooms, not the chocolate ones!) In Galicia (a region in north-west Spain, surrounded by water) the most popular meal for Christmas Eve and for Christmas Day is seafood. This can be all kinds of different seafood, from shellfish and mollusks, to lobster and small edible crabs. After the midnight service, people walk through the streets carrying torches, playing guitars and beating on tambourines and drums. One Spanish saying is

‘Esta noche es Noche-Buena, Y no Es noche de dormir’ which means ‘Tonight is the good night and it is not meant for sleeping!’ A few different languages are spoken in different regions in Spain. In Spanish Happy/Merry Christmas is ‘Feliz Navidad’; in Catalan it’s ‘Bon Nadal’; in Galician ‘Bo Nadal’; and in Basque (or Euskara in basque) ‘Eguberri on’. Happy/Merry Christmas in lots more languages. December 28th is ‘Día de los santos inocentes’ or ‘Day of the Innocent Saints’ and is very like April Fool’s Day in the UK and USA. People try to trick each other into believing silly stories and jokes. Newspapers and TV stations also run silly stories. If you trick someone, you can call them ‘Inocente, inocente’ which means ‘innocent, innocent’. 28th December is when people all over the world remember the babies that were killed on the orders of King Herod when he was trying to kill the baby Jesus. New Year’s Eve is called ‘Nochevieja’ or ‘The Old Night’ in Spain and one special tradition is that you eat 12 grapes with the 12 strokes of the clock at Midnight! Each grape represents a month of the coming year, so if you eat the twelve grapes, you are said to

be lucky in the new year. Apart from Christmas, there is another festival that is celebrated in Spain that is about the Christmas Story. It is called Epiphany and is celebrated on 6th January. In Spanish, Epiphany is called ‘Fiesta de Los tres Reyes Mages’: in English this means ‘The festival of the three Magic Kings’. Epiphany celebrates when the Kings or Wise men brought gifts to the baby Jesus. Children have some presents on Christmas Day, but most are opened at Epiphany. Some children believe that the Kings bring presents to them at Epiphany. They write letters to the Kings on Boxing Day, December 26th, asking for toys and presents. And on Epiphany Eve (January 5th) they leave shoes on windowsills or balconies or under the Christmas Tree to be filled with presents. Gifts are often left by children for the Kings, a glass of Cognac for each King, a satsuma and some walnuts. Sometimes a bucket of water is left for the camels that bring the Kings! If the children have been bad, the Kings might leave pieces of coal made out of sugar in the presents!

CEREMONIES FOR YOU …….your ceremony your way

Roscón de reyes Some big towns and cities have Epiphany Parades with each King having a big float that is shaped like a camel. Sometimes there are also real camels in the parade. The Three Kings in the Spanish Epiphany are: Gaspar, who has brown hair and a brown beard (or no beard!) and wears a green cloak and a gold crown with green jewels on it. He is the King of Sheba. Gaspar represents the Frankincense brought to Jesus. Frankincense is sometimes used in worship in Churches and showed that people worship Jesus. Melchior, who has long white hair and a white beard and wears a gold cloak. He is the King of Arabia. Melchior represents the Gold brought to Jesus. Gold is associated with Kings and Christians believe that Jesus is the King of Kings. Balthazar, who has black skin and a black beard (or no beard!) and wears a purple cloak. He is the King of Tarse and Egypt. Balthazar represents the gift of Myrrh that was brought to Jesus. Myrrh is a perfume that is put on dead bodies to make them smell nice and showed that Jesus would suffer and die. Christmas in the Basque Country In the Basque country (which is a part of northern Spain and southern France), on Christmas Eve, children’s presents are delivered by a magical man called Olentzero. He’s a big, overweight man wearing a beret and smoking a pipe. He dresses like a Basque farmer. In the Catalonia province of Spain there’s a Christmas character called ‘Tió de Nadal’ (the Christmas log) or he’s sometimes known as ‘Caga tio’ (the pooping log!). It’s a small hollow log propped up on two legs with a smiling face painted on one end. From the 8th December (the Feast of the Immaculate Conception) Catalan families gives the log a few morsels of food to ‘eat’ and a blanket to keep it warm. On Christmas Day or Christmas Eve, the log then ‘gives out’ small gifts! People sing a special song and hit the log with sticks to help its ‘digestion’ and the log drops sweets, nuts, and dried fruits. When garlic or an onion falls out of the log, all of the treats are finished for the year. Nativity Scenes ‘Pesebres’ are also popular in Catalonia (and all throughout Spain!). Many towns also hold ‘Pastorets’ which are big plays/presentations about the Christmas story, the birth of Jesus. They

have lots of music and readings from the Bible. You can find out more about Pastorets on the Pastoret Society of Catalunya’s website. A special cake called ‘Roscón’ is eaten at Epiphany. Roscón means ‘ring shape roll’. It is very doughy and is bought from a bakery on Epiphany morning. Roscón can be filled with cream or chocolate and contain a little gift. Cosy Ideas for Winter Decorating

As temperatures outside drop, it's time to bring some warmth back into your home. Use these tips and tricks to learn the best ways to cosy up for winter.

your workspace feeling cheery and bright. Create your own by purchasing a yard of fabric in the colour or pattern of your choice, hemming the raw edges, and using clip-style curtain rings over rods.

white dishware stands out against a black-painted hutch backed with pretty patterned wallpaper. Accents of silver scattered throughout the display echo the sparkle of freshly fallen snow.

Avoid the winter blues by infusing your spaces with pops of cheery colour. A bright throw or a boldly patterned pillow will do the trick, and will ensure your neutral spaces don't look stark and cold like the space outside your windows. Brightly coloured elements can also last into the spring and summer, so you'll get more bang for your decorating bucks.

Although wood floors create a sophisticated style statement yearround, you’ll need to cosy them up for the cold winter months. A fluffy area rug sets off this living room’s main seating area and adds warmth and texture underfoot. For a unique style statement, layer one rug on top of another to add more visual interest.

Focus on the Hearth As temperatures dip lower, bring your focus inward by rearranging your furniture. If you have a fireplace, pull pieces in toward the centre of the room and face them toward the hearth to create a cosy gathering spot for winter entertaining. Extra pillows and throws add warmth even without a roaring fire.

Reflective State

With the shorter days, it’s time to maximize what natural light is still available. Hanging a large mirror on a blank stretch of wall or above a mantel display will reflect light throughout your space. Turn the mirror into a decorative display by painting the frame an eye-catching colour.

Window Dressing

Even kitchens need a little TLC during the winter months. Adding bold window treatments to your kitchen windows, like these cheery red curtains, will keep

Similar to winter fashion, winter decorating is all about layering on the fabrics. Cosy your dining room up for the season by covering your chairs with simple slipcovers. Slipcovered chairs add warmth and style to this neutral dining room and can be easily taken off for a quick cleaning after a family dinner or gathering with friends.

Luxe Looks

Give your bedroom a quick style update and prepare it for the season by layering in textured bedding, throws, and pillows. A luxurious cashmere throw and soft velvet bed pillows turn this bedroom into a cosy refuge from those harsh winter winds.

Toasty Transitions

Adding a sheepskin instantly brings warmth to any room in your home. Place a sheepskin rug beside your bed, a cosy greeting to feet on brisk winter mornings, or toss one over an ottoman or a chaise to provide a toasty spot to tuck chilly toes while reading or relaxing.

Layered Rugs Make an existing rug even more cosy by layering a thinner, smaller rug on top of it. If it won’t damage the rug material, consider placing hook-and-loop squares on a couple of points on the smaller rug to help it stay in place and prevent tripping.

Pillow Panache Layer in a few extra throw pillows for a quick winter style update. Playful patterns and bold orange hues stand out against dark wood furnishings and a creamy white sofa in this cosy living room. Choose accent pillows in colours and patterns that match your existing decor to ensure you don’t have to make any more decor adjustments.

Warm Up Windows Block out chilly winter drafts by layering on window treatments. Thick, striped draperies add volume to floral-pattern Roman shades in this pretty breakfast nook. Replace the thick curtains with sheer draperies during warmer months, or simply remove the extra treatments altogether until temperatures plunge again. http://www.bhg.com

Going to bed angry could make bad memories harder to forget New research backs this age-old wisdom

They say you shouldn't go to bed angry or on an argument – and with good reason. New research has discovered that bad memories could be harder to shake after a good night's sleep. The study, from Nature Communications, suggests sleep may reinforce negative thoughts, as they become consolidated and harder to forget in the future. Yunzhe Liu, from Beijing Normal University, who led the research said: 'In our opinion, yes, there is certain merit in this age-old advice… We would suggest to first resolve argu-

ment before going to bed; don't sleep on your anger.' The research Scientists tested 73 male students over two days using a task, which required them to recall neutral or upsetting images after 30 minutes or 24 hours later after a good night's sleep. The men found it easier to suppress memories after 30 minutes of being shown an image, but were less likely to forget after a day's rest. They also conducted brain scans to find out why memories may be harder to unravel after a long period of sleep.

simple things proven to instantly boost your mood Science says they work so why not give them a go?

All of us have down days, especially at this time of year when the cold and dark can exacerbate a bad mood, but you needn't muddle through feeling rubbish (or reach for the family pack of Dairy Milk...) Science has shown that a few simple tweaks can work wonders, making you feel instantly happier. Easy to do and affordable, why not try these six proven tips next time you feel like you woke up on the wrong side of the bed?

MRI scans showed that newly acquired memories (i.e. after 30 minutes) were located in the part of the brain called the hippocampus (thought to be the centre of emotion, memory, and the autonomic nervous system), but after a good night's sleep they become distributed across the cortex (associated with higher brain function such as thought and action), so your memories essentially get transferred to a sort of long-term storage. As well as avoiding feelings of upset or anger before you climb in to bed, authors believe the findings could shed light on PTSD treatments, and

higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol when they described their environment as messy. You'll be surprised by how much you can get done (and dusted) in 15 minutes, and will probably feel extremely pleased with yourself afterwards.

that the study could pave the way for evidence-based treatments in the future: 'If this process is prevented, for instance by disturbed sleep, the emotional 'charge' of a traumatic memory remains, resulting in an inability to forget the trauma which is the hallmark of PTSD.' Yunzhe Liu added: 'We think the 're-consolidation' technique may be useful, so that we first evoke this piece of memory, and then try to suppress that.' http://www.prima.co.uk sumer Psychology revealed that people felt more positive in bright light, while getting some sunshine will make your brain produce more of the feelgood hormone serotonin.

bRooklyn film review

“Two countries, two loves, one heart.” Brooklyn was based on the 2009 novel by Colm Toibin set around the early 1950s. The plot revolves around the idea of a young Irish girl, Eilis Lacey who leaves Enniscorthy in south-east Ireland for New York searching for a better life. She worked in a shop at weekends for a Miss Kelly, nicknamed Nettles Kelly, a woman who overcharged for stale bread and relished humiliating her customers and staff. Her sister Rose wrote to Father Flood (Jim Broadbent) in Brooklyn who arranges for Eilis (Saoirse Ronan) to have a better future. “She doesn’t want to be trapped in the humdrum cycle of existence that seems to be inevitable at home.” (Clark Douglas who awarded the film 4 out of 4 stars) She gets a job at a department store, Bartocci’s, but Eilis lacks confidence and her innate shyness make it difficult for her to interact with the customers. This leads to criticism by her supervisor Miss Fortini. Seasickness during the lengthy voyage turns into homesickness, alienation and loneliness as an immigrant in a foreign country once she arrives. She is warned it will be tough and yet in a short space of time, she is able to offer similar advice to another immigrant attempting the journey: “You’ll feel so homesick that you’ll want to die, and there’s nothing you can do about it apart from endure it. But you will, and it won’t kill you.” Words of hope. We are told she resembled Paddington Bear in the way she looked forlorn by

Geoffrey Macnab (The Independent). However, it doesn’t take long before she blossoms and exudes confidence. Father Flood enrols her in a book keeping course at Brooklyn College which she passes with honours determined to be an accountant like her sister Rose. At a dance she meets Tony Fiorello, an Italian plumber who lives with his family in a poor Brooklyn neighbourhood. He has aspirations to launch a suburban home-building business with his family on Long Island. He becomes besotted with our heroine and behaves like the perfect gentleman. Tim Robey (The Telegraph) refers to the tingling chemistry between them: “the kind of old-fashioned, shivers-down-the-spine serendipity that’s hushed and special, and can’t be taught.” The story is based on a love triangle between Eilis, Tony(Emony Cohen) and Jim Farrell. When Tony expresses his love for Eilis there is an awkward moment when she is unable to respond, although in time, she is able to tell him that she loves him too. A tragedy occurs forcing her to return to Ireland and she reappraises her life in New York comparing it to how her life could be in Ireland if she remained, aware of new developments at home that would satisfy her. This is where Jim fits in. “Two countries, two loves.” It’s a tough decision for her to make but she follows her heart and makes the right decision. “Brooklyn is a heartfelt portrait of America as a land of hope and dreams, and it makes our current resistance of that identity all the more heartbreaking to recognise.” (Clark Douglas)

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. If you need professional computer help that comes from over 38 years experience, contact me to make an appointment to come to my workshop or I can come to you, by calling 689 892 745 or by Email: canducomputing@hotmail.co.uk! On many occasions I have suggested tools and techniques to remove malware and block spyware. Most of you have followed the advice and not needed to call on your neighbour who “knows about computers” and risk further damage or bring it to me to be done properly and professionally. We now know that Windows 10 is crawling with methods that send your information, a lot of it personal, back to Microsoft. Now most of us would call that “Spyware”. From here you have 3 choices: The first is to accept that Microsoft knows what is best for us and would never do anything that was not in our own best interests! The second approach is to find and download a usually free program or script that will modify, disable or remove the offending ‘back doors’; and the final option is to the switches, that Microsoft include, to disable most of these unwelcome intrusions, either by yourself of by a qualified, trained and experienced professional. Option One. Trust Microsoft! It is your computer and your privacy that you are leaving wide open for them to examine at their leisure. My knowledge of Microsoft’s history (not bar room gossip but recorded documentation) makes me choose the side of caution. Option Two. Find, download and use a program or script that will

disable or delete these offending back doors. What do they promise? These types of tools have names like ‘Destroy Windows Spying (DWS)’, ‘O&O Shutup10’, ‘Spybot Anti-Beacon’ . They promise to quickly stop Windows 10 from “spying” in just a few clicks. To me there are a number of problems with this approach. Tools of this type can cause a variety of problems, and if you look around the web, you can see plenty of examples where things went ‘wrong’. These include: 1. Blocking Windows Update; Tampering with the hosts file to block specific Microsoft web servers; 2. Breaking the Windows Store, preventing you from installing apps; 3. Disabling the Windows Defender antivirus, which helps keep Windows 10 secure; 4. Deleting various services and breaking various things and potentially blocking you from installing major updates. Next week we will look at a much better way of stopping Windows ‘Phoning home’. I will give you a list of things to look for that will do just that. You will be able to follow the list through yourself or, if you would rather allow someone who already knows how to do it, contact me to do it for you. Remember! Christmas is almost here and if Santa is likely to be bringing you a computer, laptop or tablet, the best thing would be to get Santa to ask me (Trev @ Canducomputing) to set it up correctly so everything works perfectly on the big day. So until next week, stay warm, light your fires with the Euro Weekly News (but just take 1 copy from your local shop – there are a lot of shops!) and I look forward to hearing your thoughts in my emails (See Top of the Article).

The History of Christmas Trees

The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals (pagan and Christian) for thousands of years. Pagans used branches of it to decorate their homes during the winter solstice, as it made them think of the spring to come. The Romans used Fir Trees to decorate their temples at the festival of Saturnalia. Christians use it as a sign of everlasting life with God. Nobody is really sure when Fir trees were first used as Christmas trees. It probably began about 1000 years ago in Northern Europe. Many early Christmas Trees seem to have been hung upside down from the ceiling using chains (hung from chandeliers/lighting hooks). Other early Christmas Trees, across many parts of northern Europe, were cherry or hawthorn plants (or a branch of the plant) that were put into pots and brought inside so they would hopefully flower at Christmas time. If you couldn't afford a real plant, people made pyramids of woods and they were decorated to look like a tree with paper, apples and candles. Sometimes they were carried around from house to house, rather than being displayed in a home. It's possible that the wooden pyramid trees were meant to be like Paradise Trees. These were used in medieval German Mystery or Miracle Plays that were acted out in front of Churches on Christmas Eve. In early church calendars of saints, 24th December was Adam and Eve's day. The Paradise Tree represented the Garden of Eden. It was often paraded around the town before the play started, as a way of advertising the play. The plays told Bible stories to people who could not read. The first documented use of a tree at Christmas and New Year celebrations is argued between the cities of Tallinn in Estonia and Riga in Latvia! Both claim that they had the first trees; Tallinn in 1441 and Riga in 1510. Both trees were put up by the 'Brotherhood of Blackheads' which was an association of local unmarried merchants, ship owners, and foreigners in Livonia (what is now Estonia and Latvia). Little is known about either tree apart from that they were put in the town square, were dance around by the Brotherhood of Blackheads and were then set on fire. This is like the custom of the Yule Log. The word used for the 'tree' could also mean a mast or pole, tree might have been like a 'Paradise Tree' or a tree-shaped wooden candelabra rather than a 'real' tree. In the town square of Riga, the capital of Latvia, there is a plaque which is engraved with "The First New Year's Tree in Riga in 1510", in eight languages. You can find out more about the Riga Tree from this website: www.firstchristmastree.com In 1584, the historian Balthasar Russow wrote about a tradition, in Riga, of a decorated fir tree in the market square where the young men “went with a flock of maidens and women, first sang and danced there and then set the tree aflame”. There's a record of a small tree in Breman, Germany from 1570. It is described as a tree decorated with "apples, nuts, dates, pretzels and paper flowers". It was displayed in a 'guild-house' (the meeting place for a society of business men in the city). The first person to bring a Christmas Tree into a house, in the way we know it today, may have been the 16th century German preacher Martin Luther. A story is told that, one night before Christmas, he was walking through the forest and looked up to see the stars shining through the tree branches. It was so beautiful, that

he went home and told his children that it reminded him of J e s u s, w h o left the

At first, a figure of the Baby Jesus was put on the top of the tree. Over time it changed to an angel/fairy that told the shepherds about Jesus, or a star like the Wise Men saw. The first Christmas Trees came to Britain sometime in the 1830s. In Victorian times, the tree would have been decorated with candles to represent stars. In many parts of Europe, candles are still used to decorate Christmas trees. Tinsel and The Legend of the Christmas Spider Tinsel was also created in Germany, were it was originally made from thin strips of beaten silver. But when plastic/man made tinsel was invented, it became very popular as it was much cheaper than real silver and also lighter to go on the tree!

stars o f heaven to come to earth at Christmas. Some people say this is the same tree as the 'Riga' tree, but it isn't! The Riga tree originally took place a few decades earlier. Northern Germany and Latvia are neighbours. Another story says that St. Boniface of Crediton (a village in Devon, UK) left England and travelled to Germany to preach to the pagan German tribes and convert them to Christianity. He is said to have come across a group of pagans about to sacrifice a young boy while worshipping an oak tree. In anger, and to stop the sacrifice, St. Boniface is said to have cut down the oak tree and, to his amazement, a young fir tree sprang up from the roots of the oak tree. St. Boniface took this as a sign of the Christian faith and his followers decorated the tree with candles so that St. Boniface could preach to the pagans at night. There is another legend, from Germany, about how the Christmas Tree came into being, it goes: Once on a cold Christmas Eve night, a forester and his family were in their cottage gathered round the fire to keep warm. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. When the forester opened the door, he found a poor little boy standing on the door step, lost and alone. The forester welcomed him into his house and the family fed and washed him and put him to bed in the youngest sons own bed (he had to share with his brother that night!). The next morning, Christmas Morning, the family were woken up by a choir of angels, and the poor little boy had turned into Jesus, the Christ Child. The Christ Child went into the front garden of the cottage and broke a branch off a Fir tree and gave it to the family as a present to say thank you for looking after him. So ever since them, people have remembered that night by bringing a Christmas Tree into their homes! In Germany, the first Christmas Trees were decorated with edible things, such as gingerbread and gold covered apples. Then glass makers made special small ornaments similar to some of the decorations used today. In 1605 an unknown German wrote: "At Christmas they set up fir trees in the parlours of Strasbourg and hang thereon roses cut out of many-colored paper, apples, wafers, gold foil, sweets, etc."

In parts of Germany, Poland, and Ukraine it's meant to be good luck to find a spider or a spider's web on your Christmas Tree. Spider's web Christmas Tree decorations are also popular in Ukraine. They're called 'pavuchky' (which means 'little spider') and the decorations are normally made of paper and silver wire. You might even put an artificial spider's web on your tree! Christmas Tree Lights Because of the danger of fire, in 1895 Ralph Morris, an American telephonist, invented the first electric Christmas lights, similar to the ones we use today. In 1885 a hospital in Chicago burned down because of candles on a Christmas Tree! And in 1908 insurance companies in the USA tried to get a law made that would ban candles from being used on Christmas Trees because of the many fires they had caused! So we have to say a big thank you to Ralph Morris for

making Christmas safer! The most lights lit at the same time on a Christmas tree is 194,672 and was done by Kiwanis Malmedy / Haute Fagnes Belgium in Malmedy, Belgium, on 10 December 2010! Many towns and villages have their own Christmas Trees. One of the most famous is the tree in Trafalgar Square in London, England, which is given to the UK by Norway every year as a 'thank you' present for the help the UK gave Norway in World War II. The White House in the USA has had a big tree on the front lawn since the 1920s. The record for the most Christmas trees chopped down in two minutes is 27 and belongs to Erin Lavoie from the USA. She set the record on 19th December 2008 on the set of Guinness World Records: Die GroBten Weltrekorde in Germany. Artificial Christmas Trees really started becoming popular in the early 20th century. In the Edwardian period Christmas Trees made from coloured ostrich feathers were popular at 'fashionable' parties. Around 1900 there was even a short fashion for white trees - so if you thought coloured trees are a new invention they're not! Over the years artificial trees have been made from feathers, papier mâché, metal, glass, and many different types of plastic (I've got a couple of inflatable trees!). The tallest artificial Christmas tree was 52m (170.6ft) high and was covered in green PVC leaves!. It was called the 'Peace Tree' and was designed by Grupo Sonae Distribuição Brasil and was displayed in Moinhos de Vento Park, Porto Alegre, Brazil from 1st December 2001 until 6th January 2002. In many countries, different trees are used as Christmas trees. In New Zealand a tree called the 'Pohutakawa' that has red flowers is sometimes used and in India, Banana or Mango trees are sometimes decorated. www.whychristmas.com

US developer planning megaresort outside Madrid

The Cordish Company says €2.2bn project will create 56,000 jobs and attract millions of visitors The Cordish Companies, a US real estate developer and entertainment operator, is planning to invest at least €2.2 billion on a Madrid resort. The complex will create more than 56,000 jobs for the regional economy, the company claimed in a presentation. The project includes hotels, restaurants, stores, theatres, cinemas, gaming areas and even a circus. A rendition of the resort planned by The Cordish Companies outside Madrid. The company has already presented the project to the regional government, which is controlled by the conservative Popular Party (PP).

Brexit vote dents British demand for Spanish property

Cordish is now awaiting permits, but said it would not seek any public subsidies or changes to existing Madrid laws, an allusion to an earlier large-scale project by casino mogul Sheldon Adelson that fell through due to his insistence on special tax breaks and flexibility on smoking laws. Promoters are expecting an initial flow of five million visitors a year Live! Resorts Madrid will be located on a 134-hectare tract of land in Torres de la Alameda, near Alcalá de Henares. The US company said it has already bought the farmland to make way for the resort, and is awaiting a concession from the regional government. If no other similar project turns up, Cordish could obtain the license “within five to six months.” Construction would take “between 18 and 24 months” to get the first phases of the resort up and running. Company representatives said that the administration of PP regional premier Cristina Cifuentes is “very enthusiastic” about the project and has expressed “clear support.” In a press conference on Thursday morning, the regional premier stated that the project “is looking very good” and added that the company is “solvent, reliable and powerful.” The Eurovegas project that never happened. Cordish Vice-President Abe Rosenthal and Joseph Weinberg, managing partner at the Baltimore-based business, said the initial investment is set at €2.2 billion, expandable to €3 billion if the resort is as successful as planned. Promoters are expecting a flow of five million visitors a year, and an economic impact in the range of €4-6 billion over the first five years. The heart of the projected complex is a central square with a hotel, and streets leading out from it filled with stores and restaurants. There are also sports arenas, green spaces, secondary squares and other leisure areas. Funding will come from investment capital and credit, said company representatives. Besides road access, Cordish is planning to build a new train stop to connect the resort with the central Atocha station, a move that will require cooperation from Spanish railroad authorities. in Murcia, the Canary Islands and the Balearics. “We have carried out a survey of the sector and it appears that house purchases by Brits on the Costa del Sol and the Costa Blanca have fallen by around 50% since the referendum,” said Mark Stucklin, of the Second-Home and Resort Industry Observatory. “At first it was the uncertainty after the Brexit vote, and then the fall in the pound,” said Catriona Hogan, marketing director at yourVIVA, a holiday homes estate agent on the Costa del Sol. “About 40% of our clients are British and we’ve seen that drop to around 30%. There’s still a lot of interest but there’s a wait-and-see attitude as people are watching to see what happens with the pound. Things are picking up a little now.” Stucklin pointed out that the market had always closely mirrored the fluctuation in the pound-to-euro exchange rate. The pound is currently down 18% compared with the end of 2015. “When the pound fell below €1.20, from 2009-13, Britons bought fewer than 5,000 homes a year compared [with] nearly 10,000 in 2015,” he said. “If the trend continues it will have a significant impact on the Costa Brava and Costa Blanca markets, among others. “While demand from other countries such as Germany, Belgium, Sweden and France is growing, in the short term it’s not enough to make up for the lost British buyers.” https://www.theguardian.com

US President-elect Donald Trump has posted a series of tweets criticising China for its monetary policy and its operations in the South China Sea. “Did China ask us if it was OK to devalue their currency” and “build a massive military complex?” he asked. “I don’t think so!” China said both sides should “stick to basic principles” of the relationship. Last week Mr Trump risked a diplomatic rift with China by speaking directly with Taiwan’s president. The highly unusual move saw China lodge a complaint with the US. In response to the latest tweets, without directly referring to them, the Chinese foreign ministry said the US and China have long had “highly mutually beneficial” relations. A spokesperson declined to comment on “he and his team’s method and what’s the thinking behind it”, referring to Mr Trump. The US has previously criticised China’s yuan devaluation, saying it unfairly favours Chinese exporters. It has also told Beijing to stop reclaiming land around islands and reefs which are claimed by multiple countries in the South China Sea, and has sent US Navy ships to the area. Both sides have accused each other of “militarising” the region. Why is the South China Sea contentious? The US currently imposes tariffs on some Chinese imports, such as steel and tyres. Mr Trump has previously threatened to impose a 45% tariff on Chinese goods. Can Donald Trump continue his Twitter diplomacy? - Jonathan Marcus, BBC Diplomatic Correspondent Donald Trump’s Twitter outburst along with his telephone call with the Taiwanese president has sent an emphatic signal to Beijing that the new US administration’s Asia policy may not be business as usual. continue when Mr Trump enters the White House. But if they do, they threaten not just to ruffle feathers abroad but also to sow uncertainty within his own administration. The president may be the ultimate arbiter but once in office he cannot risk publicly second-guessing his key cabinet appointments. But there’s another problem too. The tweet, as a medium, is by definition short and off-the-cuff. Policymaking, by contrast, requires coolness, deliberation and a weighing up of options. The danger is that Twitter diplomacy, for all its honesty, could exacerbate crisis instead of resolving it. Mr Trump’s phone call with Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen was thought to be the first time a US leader or leaderin waiting has spoken to a Taiwanese leader since 1979, the year formal ties were severed. The White House has said the phone call did not signal a shift in its decadeslong “One China” policy stance, which does not recognise Taiwan as an independent sovereign state but also does not recognise Beijing’s claim over Taiwan. Vice President-elect Mike Pence has tried to downplay the call, saying it was a “tempest in a teapot” and “a moment of courtesy”. Beijing lodged a “solemn representation” with Washington, where it urged the US to “cautiously and properly handle” the issue of Taiwan, according to Chinese state media. Beijing sees Taiwan as a province and aims to deny it any of the trappings of an independent state. It has threatened to use force if Taiwan formally declares independence. Bbc.com

Where to go to beat those winter blues…

Fancy a winter break? Many cities come into their own once the colder weather sets in, transforming into fairytale destinations well worthy of a long weekend. From magical Christmas markets and snowy scenery to romantic ice rinks and wholesome grub, these 10 delightful destinations will help you make the most of the season, from now until spring…

Amsterdam With its laid-back reputation, beautiful canals and endless bicycles, Amsterdam is a charming choice at any time of year, but especially inviting once snow covers its wood-panelled cafes and bobbing houseboats. Finish up a day's sightseeing at the Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank's House with a warming glass of mulled wine and a large stack of traditional pancakes.

Copenhagen

Embrace this year's hottest lifestyle trend, Hygge, in its birthplace with a cosy stay in the Danish capital. Whether you're feasting on warm cinnamon buns, strolling round the dazzling Tivoli Gardens or taking in the famous Little Mermaid statue, this smart and stylish city won't fail to enchant you.

Edinburgh

Want to stay a little closer to home? Edinburgh isn't all about the summer's Fringe Festival. Head to one of the UK's most beautiful cities for a winter break with plenty of cultural history, stellar shopping and some the world's most iconic New Year's Eve celebrations, all washed down with a warming dram of whisky.

Berlin

While Berlin is undeniably freezing during the winter months, the city's enchanting Christmas markets, rich cultural offering and delicious

warm apple strudel will ensure you stay smiling throughout your stay. Best of all, this uber-cool capital looks especially striking with a smattering of snow – the perfect backdrop for your holiday snaps.

Lisbon

Fancy a milder climate? Lisbon boasts temperate winters – perfect if you want to meander through its azulejo-enhanced streets without a care in the world. Whether you head to traditional tabernas, gourmet street food markets or cobbled back streets, the Portuguese capital is a foodie haven, so don't forget your appetite. The classic custardfilled 'Pastel de Nata' makes the perfect afternoon treat on dark afternoons.

Prague

Pretty Prague turns into a winter wonderland in the snow – its cobbled streets, ancient courtyards and hilltop castle are the definition of picture perfect. Head to the Czech capital in November and December to peruse the city's famous Christmas markets, where roasted chestnuts, carolling and plenty of mulled wine are the order of the day.

Venice

Less expensive and overcrowded, winter is an ideal time to visit Venice – in fact, the colder, the better when it comes to The Bride of the Sea. Ideal for a romantic break, enjoy a relaxing gondola ride under the Bridge of Sighs, head to the island of Murano to admire the city's signature glassware,

and don't miss your chance to stroll through the Piazza San Marco without weaving your way through thousands of other tourists.

Vienna

Arguably at its most beautiful during the colder months, when light installations, snowflakes and crisp blue skies enhance its striking architecture, Vienna is a chilly but welcoming winter prospect. Whether you want to admire the Hasburgs' famous fine art collections, explore the rambling cobbled streets or feast on traditional Austrian cakes, you won't be short of ways to enjoy yourself in this historic capital.

Reykavic

Everyone should experience the wonder of the Northern Lights once in their lifetime, and a wintry break in Iceland's capital city will let you combine the Aurora Borealis with plenty of cultural highlights. Don't forget to visit the nearby Blue Lagoon for a warming dip in the world's most picturesque geothermal pool – the perfect cold weather pick-me-up.

Finally, if you really fancy splashing out...You'll never regret a visit to the city that never sleeps. New York is really in its element once the first frost hits – from the spectacular lights and window displays on Holiday Walk to Central Park's worldrenowned ice rink. Interest rates just keep going down

Ryanair launches package holidays, including four nights in Lisbon for just £76

selling a four-night trip to Lisbon in March for £76, including flights and accommodation. Next May, a trip to Mallorca is available for £142 for a week.

Eurozone mortgage base rates were down again in November, the tenth consecutive month of negative rates. 12-month Euribor – the rate used to calculate most mortgage repayments in Spain – came in at -0.074 in November, down from -0.069 in October, and the tenth consecutive month of negative Euribor interest rates.

'One day, all Ryanair flights will be free'

Compared to November last year, when Euribor was 0.079, the benchmark interest rate for Eurozone mortgages was down by 194%. As a result, borrowers in Spain with an annually resetting Spanish mortgage will see their mortgage payments fall by around €8 per month for a typical €120,000 loan with a 20 year term. Meanwhile, new mortgage lending rose 10% in September, according to the latest figures from the National Institute of Statistics. That’s more money pouring into the Spanish property market on the buying side, but the overall value of outstanding mortgage loans is still falling, as more mortgages are retired than issued. I would like to point out, as I have done most months that we have been in this financial wonderland, that negative base rates are a crazy situation, but also a golden opportunity for investors to buy Spanish property near the bottom of the market with a long-term fixed interest loan at a time when borrowing money is probably as cheap as it is ever going to get. This next chart helps to illustrate just how low interest rates have gone. These low rates can last years, but can’t last forever. Spanish Property Insight by Mark Stücklin Everything you need to know about property in Spain http://www.spanishpropertyinsight.com

Low-cost giant announces its new cheap holiday venture alongside warning there'll be a shortage of hotel rooms in Spain next summer Ryanair is moving into package holidays. Europe’s biggest budget airline has launched Ryanair Holidays, offering hotels and apartments in addition to flights. Rival carriers, such as easyJet, Jet2 and Monarch, have offered packages for some years. Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s marketing director, said: “We want to be an Amazon of travel. We want people to come to Ryanair to buy more than flights. “Consumers have been paying too much for package holidays for years.” Initially travellers from the UK, Ireland and Germany will be able to assemble Ryanair package holidays, both to traditional Mediterranean destinations as well as cities such as Berlin, Amsterdam and Barcelona. The new venture is

The firm has teamed up with a Spanish tour operator, Logitravel, and the “bed bank”, World2Meet, to arrange the holidays. Holidays will be ATOLbonded, for which passengers will pay £2.50. Mr Jacobs said that accommodation in Spain would be in short supply in the summer of 2017. The country saw its highest number of visitors ever this summer, as holidaymakers from the UK and Germany moved away from countries regarded as dangerous, such as Turkey and Egypt. “Spanish Mediterranean hotels are 30 per cent more booked for next summer than they were at this time last year,” he said. Ryanair has also announced that flights will be sold only to people who are registered with the airline through its “My Ryanair” portal. Mr Jacobs said: “We’re against screenscrapers who try to mislead travellers.” http://www.independent.co.uk

Smile, your in Alqueria

The air in the tunnel was dangerously low in oxygen, methane was building up at an alarming rate. At least the removal of excavated earth was progressing well. The final breakthrough was approaching. One last thrust with the improvised shovel, a small avalanche of dry earth and then sunlight, fresh air and freedom. This is how one group of tourists managed to get out of Alqueria with at least some cash still in their possession. The new tourist initiative by the Alquerian establishment was built on a firm foundation of fantastic fabrications and outright lies. On paper Alqueria appeared to be the French Riviera with free beer and dancing girls, in reality it was Scunthorpe on a wet Sunday. Holidaymakers were lured to the village republic with false promises and rigged climatic data. Once there the borders were closed, prices trebled and the unfortunate visitors relieved of their cash and all portable wealth. The system was simple, pick them up from a charter flight at Murcía airport. Drive them into Alqueria. Keep them there until their wallets and tempers had been exhausted. Then drive them back to the a i r p o r t where the expected r e t u r n flight never

materialises. The Spanish authorities didn’t mind Alquerians passing through their country as long as they didn’t touch anything on the way. Keeping the holiday makers occupied while their cash was being surgically removed was simple enough. Remitroot whisky rendered most of them incapable of logical thought while rigged gaming machines accounted for the rest. Manuela was the main attraction as tourist hostess, she was certainly worth a second look. She brought a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘package holiday’. As far as complaints were concerned Loco Paco was given the job of Customer Relations Representative. He refused to answer any query without first consulting his imaginary five foot tall pet rodent, Bert. Complainees went away confused, bewildered and in some cases sorry for Paco, but they went away which was the object of the exercise. Visitors soon began begging in the streets, some formed escape committees. Tunnels were started. One group was seen using a vaulting horse, but Rodriquez had already seen that film. A glider was found in an attic and one couple tried to cross the border disguised as a female alpaca. Unfortunately a male alpaca in quizzical mood was roaming on the other side. The couple are still receiving counselling. Those that made it out of Alqueria were forced to commit petty crime in order to pay their way home. The summer tourist season ended with bumper profits for Alqueria. Alqueria now headed the international blacklist for tourist destinations. Some countries were so outraged at the treatment of their nationals they threatened military action.

pause for thought

It’s particularly cruel how often thieves seem to strike at this time of year. And true to form I was saddened to learn that two of our friends had suffered a burglary this last week here in Spain, where thieves had broken through considerable security, causing major damage to property, to steal jewellery and other things for which the principal value was sentimental (so irreplaceable), rather than financial. And of course the real tragedy is that this episode represents but the tip of an iceberg; that many people are similarly suffering at the hands of the unscrupulous throughout this world, where there is so little respect for the possessions, feelings or even lives of others. And perhaps even worse is the fact that we are no longer shocked by such things, accepting crime of all description as a fact of life. But the Bible teaches us that this is the inevitable result of a rejection of God. That where the first two commandments (summarised by Jesus as “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength”) are habitually broken, then the remaining eight (now there’s a test – can we still remember them?) rapidly become disregarded in consequence. So bad language (do not take the name of God in vain) proliferates;

Sunday is no longer sacred, being treated like any other day; there is little respect for parents or anyone else in society; murder, adultery and theft are rife; truth, particularly in the political arena, is often in short supply; and we are all constantly being encouraged to covet just about everything belonging to others through the power of advertising! So how about a return to basics as we prepare for Christmas this year, determining to do a little better on those oft forgotten commandments to see if we can make some small difference to this World of ours. lane 6

We wanted to give our visitor, Nick, some typically Spanish entertainment, so obviously we took him bowling. The Bowling Alley is a victim of its own success; it was busy, particularly with a Spanish children’s birthday party, which took up 3 lanes, 2 rows of tables and most of the decibel count, but there was enough room for our meagre party of 3. Nick is quite good at bowling, whereas I am hopeless, so in order to give him some kind of a game I elected to cheat, and ask for the bumpers. We queued at the counter, causing a disruption in routine for the waiting staff, who were earning their restaurant wages at the gallop. ‘Can I have the bumpers?’ I injected a pleading note into the question, in order to mask my embarrassment. Next it was shoes. ‘Size 40’ I announced confidently; the proffered shoes resembled boats large enough to make a safe channel crossing in a heavy swell. My vast shoes and I waddled over to the bar in a manner reminiscent of Charlie Chaplin, to beg for a smaller pair. We got under way, and all was going smoothly – the balls were rolling, the pins were falling, and the bumpers were rising at the given moments with inconspicuous discretion – until they didn’t! None of us noticed the absence of my mechanical assistants. I chucked the ball with all my might, reckoning that with the bumpers I could sacrifice accuracy in favour of

By Jos Biggs editor@soltimes.com

force. About halfway down the lane the ball slithered inevitably into the gutter and stopped. It vacillated for a moment, then settled contentedly halfway between launch site and goal. ‘I’m not going.’ I affirmed, so Pete went and plucked the unfortunate girl away from her duties to retrieve the ball and correct the errant bumpers. However, only one bumper was willing to work, so after the poor girl had retrieved my ball from its stationary position in the gutter twice more she decided to move us to another lane. The first throw was fine, but then the bumpers came out in sympathy with their mates, and, as before, only one bumper would participate. This time we sent Nick to get the girl, who got a man who knew bumpers. But to no avail – we finished the game with one bumper – none of us were brave enough to disturb the poor girl a sixth time! Next time I’m going to ask for any lane except Lane 6!

Enchanting Spain - out now

From Santiago de Compostela in the north-west to Granada in the southeast via Madrid in the centre, Enchanting Spain reveals the fascinating breadth and depth of this exuberant country. The Moorish Alhambra, Toledo’s Jewish quarter, the Roman amphitheatre at Mérida and Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia, the famously unfinished cathedral, each show a different aspect of Spain’s complex history, now intermingled with fabulously contemporary museums and art centres. The major towns sparkle with life, which visitors can share through the vibrant night scene, the delicious food and wine, the flamenco performances and the abundant festivals. The landscape is diverse and dramatic, whether you are discovering the sundrenched beaches of Andalucía, hiking in the Picos de Europa or taking a trip down the Guadalquivir River. Enchanting Spain is a portrait in words and images of both the familiar and the unexpected pleasures of this vibrant country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------John MacDonald has written for many Spanish and international publications and has a special interest in Spanish history. 2 onions 2 cloves of garlic 2 carrots 3 stalks of celery 2 fresh bay leaves ½ a bunch of fresh thyme olive oil 500 g stewing beef (2.5cm dice) 3 tablespoons flour 600 ml Guinness 2 teaspoons brown sugar 450 g potatoes 75 ml milk 1 tablespoon butter

Directions:

Peel and roughly chop the onions, garlic and carrots, then trim and roughly chop the celery. Tie the bay and thyme sprigs together with string. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a large casserole

pan over a medium heat. and add the vegetables and herbs. Toss everything in the oil to coat, then season. Cook, covered, for 10 minutes, or until the veg is softening, stirring occasionally. Transfer to a plate. Toss the beef in the flour and season, then add to the pan and cook until browned all over (you may need to do this in batches). Deglaze the pan with the Guinness. Add the veg and herbs, then top up with water if needed, to just cover

the meat and veg. Stir in the brown sugar. Bring to the boil, then cover and simmer for about 2 hours, or until the meat is tender. Cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling salted water, then drain. Mash with the milk, butter and a pinch of sea salt and black pepper. Preheat the oven to 200ºC/400ºF/gas 6. Put the meat in an ovenproof dish, top with the mash and drizzle with oil. Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden and crisping up.

Ham & peas bacon and pease pudding. Ingredients

3 ham hocks (roughly 2.3kg in total) 2 leeks 1 celery stalk 3 carrots olive oil 2 fresh bay leaves 100 g pearl barley 1 litre organic chicken stock 400 g frozen peas ½ a bunch of fresh curly parsley 1 heaped tablespoon mint sauce

Directions:

The day before you cook this recipe, soak the ham hocks in a pot of cold water overnight. The next day, drain the hocks, refill the pot with fresh cold water and bring to the boil. Discard the salty water, rinse the hocks, and repeat once more. Trim and finely slice the leeks, celery and carrots in your food processor

or using a mandolin. Add the veg to a casserole with a lug of oil, a pinch of sea salt and black pepper, and the bay leaves. Sweat over a medium heat for 15 minutes, or until the veg are soft but not coloured, stirring occasionally. Add the drained ham hocks, pearl barley and chicken stock. Bring to the boil then cook, with the lid on, over a medium-low heat for 3 hours, or until the meat is very tender. Check

on it occasionally, and top up with more hot stock or water if it gets too dry. Using tongs, transfer the ham hocks to a clean board and carefully remove all the fat and bones. Shred the meat then return it to the broth. Turn the heat up and add the peas. When they’re tender, pick, finely chop and stir in the parsley along with the mint sauce. Serve with bread and English mustard.

Santa Walk Change of Date

The Orihuela Costa Local Police decided, for health and safety reasons, it was in the public’s best interest to postpone this year’s annual Santa 5km Walk, in aide of Maria and the Pink Ladies/ Panthers AECC. The event will now take place on Sunday 11th December, with the same format. Registration opening at 11am at Zenia Boulevard, the walk will start at midday led by Santa in his sleigh. The walk will start and finish at Zenia Boulevard with entertainment from Just Brass and Sunshine FM. Don’t forget we are collecting hygiene products for Elche orphanage and dried food goods for Reach Out. We look forward to seeing you all in your Santa outfits and let’s keep our fingers crossed for some pleasant weather.

Footwork Dance Supporting the Less Able in Los Montesinos

Footwork Dance are answering a need for help from Los Montesinos Social Services, by making a donation from the ticket sales of both their Summer Show and the forthcoming Christmas show, to help purchase some urgently required wheelchairs for the Less Abled of the town. They will also be donating chocolate Santas, for children and collecting food and goods to bring some Christmas cheer for the needy. The Christmas Show “Roll out the Dance Floor “ Will see the Students of all age groups perform a variety of dance routines ranging from Ballet, Acro Jazz and Tap. As with all Footwork shows, it will be packed with many colourful

costumes and excellent music. There will be lots of new routines, some old favourites and of course the very young showing their skills and no doubt stealing the show. So what better way is there to start the festive season.

“Roll Out the Dance Floor”, can be seen on Sunday at 7.30pm on the 11th December, at Casa de Cultura y Musica, Los Montesinos. Tickets are 7 Euros and can be obtained from the Dance School, by contacting Erica on 662 003 823 or from Kennedy’s Supermarket, in Los Montesinos

“God Bless Us Everyone”

Studio32 brings festive joy to audiences Studio32’s production of “A Christmas Carol” played to sell-out performances at the CardenalBelluga Theatre, San Fulgencio last week. Audiences were treated to a wonderful mix of songs, dances and festive cheer as the company presented Charles Dickens’ classic story of Scrooge in a gloriously entertaining musical production. This talented company are well-known for the summer musicals, but this is the first time that they have moved away from pantomime for their winter show. Studio32’s chairman Philip Wilson commented: “This year brings to fruition the company’s aim to focus entirely on musical theatre. This is the first full-scale musical that we have staged in winter, and my sincerest thanks go to all of our company have worked so hard to bring together this major production.” Set in Dickensian London Ebenezer Scrooge is transformed on Christmas Eve by three ghosts who visit him and persuade him to change his miserly ways. Bill Nicholson gave a strong performance as the lead character Ebenezer Scrooge, a major challenge for any actor as he was very rarely off-stage. Bill delivered some fine singing and acting, and there were wonderful charismatic moments as we saw the character evolve through the show. This culminated in a dramatic finale where the enlightened Ebenezer comes to realise that, far from being a humbug, Christmas and family are rather good things after all. Alice Wakeford, Nick Morgan, and Lindsay Kendall gave excellent supporting performances as the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future respectively. All three performers demonstrated remarkable dancing talent as well as acting and singing, and audiences were

treated to some wonderful tap dance routines, acrobat, and modern ballet.

The Orihuela Costa branch of the Royal British Legion would like to thank all the customers of Iceland San Javier branch who gave so generously to the Poppy Appeal this year and achieved a fantastic total of €3421, eclipsing last year’s total by over €1000. We would also like to thank Iceland’s manager Lisa Perry and all her staff, who were so helpful to us. A team of volunteers was put together by Diana Wiltshire, who worked out a rota, with 16 people giving up their time, some working alone and some in couples, for over

3 weeks, for up to 6 hours a day. The weather was also very helpful, being sunny and warm for most of the time, so that volunteers could sit or stand outside, and hence were able to chat to customers, some of whom have since become members of RBL locally. One of the photos shows Nicola and Carl Louden, looking very smart, on duty outside the store. They are two of our younger members, proving that RBL is not just for “older people”. The other photo shows members Walter and Sue Shatford, flanking Lisa Perry and some of her staff. Orihuela Costa Branch meets at the Olympia restaurant, Mil Palmeras, on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 7.00 for 7.30pm. We also have many social functions, and everyone is welcome. You do not need to be ex-services to join. Diana Wiltshire

Jacob Marley, both living and ghost, was played with confidence and style by Dianne Oliver who only took on the understudy role four weeks ago when someone was taken ill. A fine character performance, both solo and in company, the ghost song “Link By Link” was a particularly entertaining number. This show featured many wonderful cameo roles, including Mr and Mrs Fezziwig played by Mervyn Williams and Bev McEwan, who led a rousing and cheery Christmas Ball scene that had audiences clapping along. This was countered by the more serious supporting roles of Bob Cratchit and his family, played by John Palmer, Alicia Wakeford, and Ashelie Oxley. A special mention has to be made for the part of Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit’s son. This complex character role was played with great sympathy by Jacob Baylis, who had the unforgettable final line to deliver – “God Bless Us Everyone”. The company song and dance numbers were lively, entertaining, and full of colour and the chorus were clearly all working hard together. Some slick scene changes, a variety of interesting effects including snow and video projections, resulted in a show that left audiences calling for more in a rousing finale. Great entertainment, and the company have raised over 3,500 euros for charity with this show - what a wonderful start to the Christmas season!

This big guy is a real gentle giant. He is loveable and likes a good belly rub. He is good with people and in excellent condition. He was found wandering the streets trying to interact with people. He appears to have been well looked after, but has obviously been lost and with no microchip found, we do not know his owners. He is well house trained, is very good on a lead and when left to roam freely within boundaries. He would make an excellent family dog.

transitions involving the group of dancers. However call me old school, Danny’s left arm upsets me. I was always taught it should be at the height of the girls eye and Danny’s is nearly parallel with his elbow. For that reason (probably coming from Oti) I gave him 9 where it could have been 10 and the judges 38.

'Strictly' Week 11 By Lyn Aspden of 'Strictly Dance' Class Info 635 584 431 This week was musicals week and I never thought I'd hear Anton singing! (could this be something for the future - I hope not!) The opening number again involved all the

professionals, celebrities and judges together with some of the cast from Annie the musical performing to Anything Can Happen. And a closing number from my favourite musical of all time West Side Story. With only 5 couples left and a battle for a semi final place the

competition is really hotting up. Opening were Ore Oduba and Joanne with a Foxtrot performed to Pure Imagination from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Ore always manages to get the characterisation of the number but I still don't like his dancing. He is very flat footed and leaves his left side open too much for my liking. I gave him 8 and the judges 36. Next were Judge Rinder and Oksana with a Samba to Oh What A Night from the Jersey Boys. A nicely danced Samba with lots of basic steps and great hip action but I feel he is now out of his depth with the calibre of the other dancers and time to go. Louise Redknapp and Kevin followed with a Quickstep performed to Whip Crack Away from Annie Get Your Gun. Another super performance from Louise with great characterisation but again as last week less than 50% of the dance was actual quickstep and I saw very little recognisable basic anywhere. Kevin come on get your act together! I awarded her 9 and the judges 37. Claudia Fragapane and AJ danced a Salsa to the Lion Kings I Just Can't Wait To Be King. Some incredible lifts and armography here. The choreography was extremely difficult and Claudia showed excellent body isolation. I awarded her 9 (could have been 10 but a slip just at the end stopped it) and the judges 37. Closing the show were Danny Mac and Oti with a Tango performed to the Dreamgirls One Night Only. Again some super choreography and great

So in the bottom 2 this week were Judge Rinder and Ore with Judge Rinder leaving after the dance off and the judges unanimous

decision. Only another couple of weeks to go before that glitter ball is lifted and Danny is being pressed by Claudia and Louise. Who

will lift it this year? I can't wait to see. In the meantime come and join the strictly gossip at one of our classes but until next week Keep Dancing!

The Initial Line Up

Scarlett Moffatt wins I’m A Celebrity 2016 after beating Joel Dommett and Adam Thomas in tense final The Gogglebox favourite has been the star of the ITV reality contest – and is soon set to earn her first million I’m A Celebrity star Scarlett Moffatt was last night crowned queen of the jungle – as she admitted she dreams of a TV job working with show hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly . The Gogglebox favourite has been the star of the ITV reality contest – and is soon set to earn her first million. And while she has vowed viewers and potential employees with her down-toearth personality and witty one-liners, she hopes to one day work alongside her fellow Geordie screen stars. She said: “The dream would be to work with Ant and Dec. I’d go wherever they’d have us. “The Geordie duo could become a trio. Imagine hanging out with those boys all day and having a laugh. I’d love it.” Scarlett, 26, beat finalists Joel Dommett, 30, and Emmerdale star Adam Thomas , 28, to become last night’s winner. And she overcame her fear of small spaces by taking on the Cavern of Claws in her ultimate bushtucker trial. Drenched in rats, critters and water she went on to retrieve her five stars before requesting a thick peanut butter milkshake, loaded nachos, a burger, onion rings and potato fries for her last meal in camp. She has been compared to fellow Geordie Vicky Pattison who won the ITV show last year. But she has ruled out following in the footsteps of her predecessor by being a Loose Women. Instead she wants to create a Loose Women spin off titled Loose Young Adults. She explained: “I don’t know how I would fit into a show like Loose Women. I don’t even class myself as a woman. I class myself as a young adult, not a woman. If they had Loose Young Adults, I would definitely be up for going on a panel show like that.” Scarlett has already been writing her own material for a TV show. And fellow campmate Danny Baker has expressed a wish to work with her believing she should feature in panel show’s such as Have I Got News For You. He previously praised her for being “smart as a whip” and one of Britain’s most intelligent rising young stars. A source close to Scarlett said: “She is still very new to the game and at first the people around her don’t want her to be overexposed. It’s going to be a gradual thing with things that will surprise people. “At the moment there is a lot of interest from both ITV and Channel 4, and her agent is carefully

Ant & Dec The star dropped three stone from a size 16 to a size 10 by ditching junk food and taking up a gym routine after discovering she was at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. On top of the £70,000 she is rumoured to have been paid for I’m A Celebrity, she is set to earn hundreds of thousands from endorsements, appearances and other media deals. But Scarlett told how she would “rather have a million laughs than a million pounds”. And if TV doesn’t work out, the bubbly star wants to become “a chocolate taster, a professional wine taster, Stephen Hawking’s assistant or a radio presenter”. Scarlett was raised in County Durham and was regularly bullied for her big teeth and monobrow while at school.

Scarlett with the Crown considering the options. A show where she explores the weird and wacky world of something could be interesting, something quite off the wall.” Scarlett has become known for her witty one liners. And she says she hopes to return to Gogglebox alongside her mum Betty, 46, and dad Mark, 50. She went on: “I’m going back. I think they were a bit nervous at first about how people would react, but I really want to go back. I love doing Gogglebox. Me and my family are like The Brady Bunch, so it would be weird if we weren’t filming when we were watching TV now.” Scarlett is set to earn her first million as she has a string of lucrative offers in the pipeline including one from a publisher for her official biography. It comes as her first self penned book Scarlett Says is still flying off the shelves. And she is planning to release her fitness DVD, SuperSlim Me, on Boxing Day.

They also used to mock her for believing in aliens. Up until last year she was working as a disability advisor for students. She has also starred in show’s such as MTV’s Beauty School Cop Outs as well as Celebrity First Dates. The Moffats joined Gogglebox in series three after Scarlett had gone to college with one of the show’s researchers who asked her to help them find a suitable family from the north-east. Three days after putting forward her own family, there were cameras set up inside her living room. She has amassed a legion of fans including comedian Alan Carr not to mention her 418,100 strong Twitter and her 637,000 Instagram followers. Since signing up to I’m A Celebrity she has been the bookies favourite to win but her ramblings about time travel theory and her love of biscuits cemented her place in the final. But as she approached her last night in camp she said: “I’m not sure people know who I am.” She added: “It was only this time last year that I was doing my nine to five office job, so the fact that I’m on telly is unreal.” And before she went in, she said: “I’ll have to explain to everyone, “I’m Scarlett. I’m from County Durham and I watch the telly for a living.” mirror.co.uk

Stunning Stone wins Alfred Dunhill his second European Tour title in style. “I just played some incredible golf the whole week to be fair,” quipped the 23-year-old after the round.

Brandon Stone won the Alfred Dunhill Championship by an impressive seven strokes on Sunday. The South African carded a four under 67 in the final round at Leopard Creek Country Club to move to 22 under par and claim an emphatic win, while fellow countryman Richard Sterne finished alone in second on 15 under. Stone, who started the day three strokes ahead of the field, felt the heat from former Masters Winner Charl Schwartzel as they shared the lead on 17 under. However, there was a two shot swing after Schwartzel dropped a shot on the seventh where Stone rolled in a 15 footer for a birdie. Four more gains on the back nine would see him march unopposed to

“To get this win before Christmas is obviously great but more importantly it gets me a good start on the Race to Dubai. “Obviously I finished 50th this year and I want to build on that and this is the perfect stepping stone to do that. “On the front nine, I was tied for the lead at one stage. But I knew my game plan was to try to get maybe one or two under par through the turn and try to score on the back nine. “That was the game plan I set myself on Thursday and that was the game plan I was going to stick to today.” Further down the field, Belgian Thomas Detry earned a solo third finish while a host of players, including Schwartzel and Scott Jamieson, were locked on fourth place on 12 under. golf365.com

San Miguel Golf Society at Vistabella

A fairly early start found 37 members and 1 guest taking part in a stableford competition at a course members tend to either struggle at or dominate, with little in between. But today nobody dominated, with the exception of the lone visitor Gary Garbett, who returned a superb 39 points. Members cards were led by Chris Hamblett and Norman Padmore who both returned 35’s, but nobody else really came near to matching their handicap. Interestingly, the last time we were at Vistabella, back in April this year, those filling 2nd to 5th in Bronze were the exact same players who filled those positions this time round, although in a different order. Compared to that visit, Bronze and Silver categories scored similarly, but Gold was well down this time around, 41 points being needed to win back in April, 33 today. Probably most influential in bringing that about was the very difficult pin positions, being either on the edge of greens or at the bottom of an undulation, meaning any ball left above the pin was likely to need 3 putts to hole. The strengthening and cooling of the wind as the round progressed was another factor, and a reason why all made there way to the internally situated restaurant area for the prize giving. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Phil Birtwistle (28 on CB), 4th Norman McBride (29 on CB), 3rd Keith Stevenson (29 on CB), 2nd Norman Padmore, joint best scorer of the day with 35 points, but beaten on count back by the other joint best scorer, Chris Hamblett. Silver Category: 5th Tony Sims (28), 4th Ken Flaherty (29 on CB), 3rd Steve Davis (29 on CB), 2nd Steve Belshaw (29 on CB) and 1st Nick Spicer with 31 points. Gold Category: 5th Darren Hancock (29

on CB), 4th Paul Kelsall (31 on CB), 3rd Ivor Turkington (31 on CB), 2nd John Aitchison (32) and 1st, usually in Silver but today finding himself in Gold, John’s best golfing buddy Alan McDonald with 33 points. The Abacus was won by Mike Inns. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all), of which there are only three on this course, went to Norman Cahill (4), Nick Spicer (8), and Darren Hancock (15). Nearest the pins in 3 went to Barry Roehrig (Gold), Ken Flaherty (Silver) and Keith Wraithmell (Bronze) The best (and only) guest prize was won by Gary Garbett who scored an excellent 39. He would most likely have won with such a good return even if there had been other visitors playing, so he fully deserved his sleeve of balls. Our thanks go to the staff at Vistabella golf course for their contribution to the day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Theo Boelhouwer a call on 694494824 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next Wednesday, December 7th, we will be at Villamartin.

We played at Bonalba, the weather was kind and some exceptional scores were recorded, winners on the day were, nearest the pin on the par 3's Jim McCarthy, Robert Scott and Steve (El Stevo) Craven who also took the two's pot. Best front nine Nigel Wright and best back Theresa Wright. The overall winner on the day with an impressive 41 points was Jeff Evans. Our next outing was at Font Del Llop this was the Captain verses Vice Captains team challenge, this yearly fixture is very competitive and there was much banter between the teams, however the Vice Captain took the

honours this year with other winners as follows, nearest the pin on the par 3's were Michelle Evans, Colin Fear, Bill Martin 2 and Chris Smith who also won the two's pot. Nearest the pin in 2 was Jim McCarthy Nearest in 3 was Marc Doherty. Back at Rayz Bar on El Raso where the presentation took place the football card was won by Steve James. December 2016

Busters golf report . December 2016 Alto Real We picked a great day weather wise to play Alto Real, the sun was shining the winds had dropped what more could we ask for, we were warmly greeted by Antonio and his staff, December is usually a low month regarding our turnout and this December proved no exception, with this being the final month for our player of the year competition, for the P O Y competition we take the best six games from all of the games that are played in the year, our winner this year was Martin Collins with one hundred and eighty seven points, giving him an average of just over thirty one points per game which is a very good average, he was closely followed by Bill Peters who trailed by five points in second place, and the third spot was taken by Barry Grinsell who was only seven points behind.

Netball International Series: Jamaica edge England in thriller to seal series

England lost their series against Jamaica 2-1 with a 64-57 defeat in a thrilling deciding match in Coventry. The home side led after the first quarter, but Jamaica hit back in the second to lead 33-29 at half-time. England came roaring back at the end of the third quarter to draw level, only to cede the momentum once more as Jamaica ground out the victory. The Roses had earned a 63-50 victory in the second Test on Friday, after the tourists won 66-49 in Tuesday’s opener. Bbc.com

Can I take this opportunity to thank Rik, Lisa and the Staff at Quesadas Mini Bar which is located close to the arches in Quesada, for looking after us on our return to the bar for our presentation and providing us with our usual sausage, chips with bread and butter that we followed with a couple of the bars sensibly priced beers. Busters Golf Society is a small friendly group of like minded people who play on the first Friday of the month, depending on the time of the year we generally have between sixteen and twenty four players, over the four years since we first formed the society some of our original members have moved on, either returned to their country of origin or have ventured to pastures new , so we are looking for a few more members to swell our ranks, if you are interested in joining our society ( its free) then please email me Barry Grinsell at bustersgolfsociety@hotmail.com quoting your phone number and current handicap and I will get back to you within a couple of days.

MAZARRÓN FC 0 CD JUMILLA 1

Rosberg Retires from F1

Nico Rosberg has retired from Formula One following his world championship victory, saying he isn’t willing to make the same sacrifice again. Rosberg made the announcement at an FIA Press Conference in Vienna ahead of being crowned Formula One World Champion having won the title in Abu Dhabi. “I have decided to end my Formula One career here,” Rosberg said. “The last two years losing to Lewis [Hamilton] were very difficult moments for me which fuelled my motivation more than I ever thought was possible. I didn’t leave a stone unturned from Austin last year really. I pushed “Every time I was home [my wife]knew I needed to rest … she was always there to support and to make it as easy as possible … having achieved my childhood dream … I’m not willing to do that sort of commitment again.” “I put absolutely everything into it and it was very, very tough. Lewis is an amazing driver, one of the best out there and to beat him is very tough.” sportcentral.es

Mazarron lost a game which in all probability should not have been played after a day of torrential rain which made the pitch at the Estadio Municipal surface virtually unplayable. Mazarrón started well with Andreo having a shot in the first minute which was parried away. Meanwhile Jimmy overran ball when it stuck in a puddle as he was bearing down on goal. On 9 minutes an excellent ball by Raso found Jimmy but the striker went for power instead of placement and missed to the left of the upright. Mazarróns best chance of the first half came from a lovely ball out of defence by Juan Andreo to Chino and it took a finger tip save from the Jumilla keeper to keep it out of the net. Three minutes later another excellent save by the visiting keeper denied Chino again as Mazarron continued to impress. It took until the 28th minute for Jumilla's first shot which was from distance and easily collected by Pablo in the Mazarrón goal. Then, to emphasise the state of the pitch Raul received the ball, turned and his shot beat the keeper but not the mud as the ball stuck a foot from the line before being cleared.

Mazarron were made to pay for the missed chances on 33 minutes when a strike from 25 years deceived Pablo and went into the top corner of the net to give Jumilla the lead at half time.

If the first half was all Mazarrón the second was an even contest with both sides playing good football despite the pitch cutting up. Two minutes after the restart Jimmy brought a fingertip save from the Jumilla keeper and shortly afterwards Mazarrón should have been awarded a penalty when there was a blatant handball as a Jumilla defender attempted to prevent an Andreo cross. On 60 minutes it was Mazarrón who had a let off when a well struck free kick came back off the defensive wall only to fall to a Jumilla forward who blasted his shot against the post. It was then the turn of Jumilla to suffer due to the atrocious pitch. Mazarrón were caught short at the back as they pressed forward and Pablo saw a Jumilla forward bearing down on his goal. He went to ground too early and the forward dribbled past him but, as he pulled the trigger to shoot, the ball stuck in the mud and his resultant miss kick went wide of the empty net. Mazarron's last chance came when Boudia hit the post from almost on the goal line when he should have scored. The defeat saw Mazarron drop one place to twelfth in the league. Team: Pablo, Raul Torrano, Chino, Marcos, Juan Andreo, Raso, Boudia, Raul (Cesar), Koko (Jose), Jimmy (Ruben). Andreo, Man of the Match: Juan Andreo
