Águilas family arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse
Officers of the Guardia Civil have arrested six members of the same family, known locally as ‘Los Terribles’, and living in Calle Marín Menú in Águilas. 3 generations of the same family all live in the same building, and those arrested are suspected of the sexual abuse of a minor. Neighbours are unwilling to speak about the family, for fear of reprisals, but they describe the family as ‘those who are not crazy are alcoholics and drug addicts. They are very aggressive and dangerous.’ The officers arrested a man for allegedly abusing his nephew of 14 years of age over the time span of a year and a half. The others, the child’s parents, brother and grandparents were arrested for concealment of the crime. The family moved here from Huercal-Overa, where the grandfather had a fishmongers business. However, the business did not flourish, and they moved to Águilas, buying the property in which they now live for 4€ from a woman who ‘needed to sell in a hurry.’ The alleged paedophile, known by the nickname ‘El Monstruo’ because of his build aggressiveness, has always had problems with the police. Likewise, the father of the child, who has earned himself the name of ‘El Loco’, has been reported several times for assault. Neighbours report that ‘he’s always at the bar and when he drinks he gets aggressive.’ He has five children, two of which have been placed in foster care by the Servicios Sociales. The neighbours said that the grandfather controlled everything that happened in the house, where screams and fights were the order of the day, and tension was continuous. As a result of a recent fight the lift was pitted with hammer blows, and the post boxes were shattered. The Comunidad de Vecinos has denounced the family for non-payment of bills, and they have been living for some time without electricity or water. The cleaning services have had to attend to clear rubbish accumulated by this family, and which was causing an unbearable stench. A spokesperson who did not wish to be identified voiced the hope that the Police will evict them, adding that ‘Although this sounds ugly, it is the only action that will provide a solution.’
robberies investigated
The Guardia Civil of the Región de Murcia, under the ‘Plan de Prevención e Investigación de Delitos Contra el Patrimonio’, has investigated a series of robberies with violence and intimidation in the region of the Mar Menor, and have arrested a suspect. To date the Benemérita has cleared up six robberies from shops in San Javier and Los Alcázares, has recovered stolen cash and the knife and clothing used by the detainee during the execution of the crime. The investigations were initiated by agents specialising in prevention and detection after a series of robberies with violence and intimidation in establishments in the Mar Menor region. The officers noted a similarity in the mode of several robberies on shops in San Javier and Los Alcázares, when the perpetrator used a cap to partially cover his face. Although he chose different types of businesses, such as pharmacies, clothes and shoe shops, book and newsagents and food outlets, they all had a common factor – they were all run by women. He would intimidate his victims using a knife and on occasions, forced them to give him cash from the till. During the investigation the Police intensified surveillance on commercial areas of San Javier and Los Alcázares in order to frustrate further robberies and to arrest the perpetrators. On the morning of August 29, two businesses in San Javier suffered two separate robberies with violence and intimidation. The police response was so immediate that moments later they had located and arrested a man who was carrying a knife and a large amount of cash coincident with the amount taken from the two shops. However, the robber, seeing that the police were closing in on him, took off his hat and shirt and threw them into a rubbish bin. But a brave resident of San Javier, seeing him fleeing, gave chase, allowing the officers time to retrieve the suspect’s clothing, and subsequently the suspect himself. After the comprehensive analysis of the information gathered, the testimony of victims and witnesses, and the evidence obtained after the arrest, the officers were ale to arrest him for the commission of six robberies with violence and intimidation in San Javier and Los Alcázares . The arrested man has been identified as MBM, a Spanish national, 43 years old and a resident of San Javier. The quick action of the officers and the cooperation of a member of the public resulted in the seizure of the weapon and clothing used in the robbery and also the recovery of 260 euros stolen in the last offences.
man gored by bull during fiestas de calasparra
During the fifth bull running during the Fiestas de Calasparra a 30 year old man was gored in the left thigh and buttock. The incident occurred on the last corner of the course, at the crossroads at Calle Rotas, on the last stretch to be completed by the bulls. The wounded man was taken to the Arixaca Hospital. It is not known how gravely he is injured.

4km tailback caused by collision
A 4 kilometre tailback was caused by a traffic collision on the A-30 at the Espinardo interchange, in the direction of Murcia. The accident, which involved five vehicles, happened at midday at the fixed radar point. Fortunately no one was injured.
wild boars cause problems for farmers
The population of jabalí (wild boar) is causing economic losses to farmers due to the animal’s destructive feeding habits. Jabalí numbers have rocketed since the cost of hunting permits from the Dirección General de Medio Ambiente has been drastically increased. The farms most affected are in La Alquería, Sierra del Buey, Carche, Bujes, Sierra Larga, La Jimena and Rincón de Santa Ana. The farmers claim that herds of the boars sweep through the crops, eating and destroying everything in their path. They consume not only the crop, but dig the roots up, killing what remains of the plant, and damaging the irrigation systems as well. The farmers have appealed for help from the Sociedad de Cazadores La Asunción, but its president, Sebastián Terol, noted that ‘in previous years the fee was paid by preserve, and this year it is paid per hectare. Last year permits for hunters took 1,400 euros and this year the fee has increased to 15,000 euros.’ Given the number of complaints from affected farmers in the Municipality of Jumilla , COAG will launch a campaign to collect signatures. The Presidente del Sindicato Agrario in Jumilla, Pedro García, said that he will make ‘all the necessary steps for the Authorities to put in place measures to ensure that hunting permits are issued to control this pest, and that affected farmers are compensated.’

Francisca García, a 53 year old retired ticket seller for the charity ONCE, paid for a trip to Madrid with the Asociación Comcence only to find that ‘there is no way that I take public transportation to the capital of Spain. The disabled are very discriminated against and I feel great helplessness.’ She said. Adrián Juárez, her son, acting on advice from Alsa, gave more than 15 days notice so that the company could make arrangements for an adapted bus. But when he went to buy the ticket from the bus company that makes the trip from Murcia to Madrid he was refused, and told that as his mother’s chair was electric, and not foldable, therefore it would have to be transported in

Adrián was shocked by the proposal by Alsa that his mother should be lifted on to the bus ‘like a sack of potatoes.’ Francisca then decided to go for the trip by train, only to discover that the Murcia-Madrid line is not adapted for disabled passengers. A representative of Renfe suggested that she boarded a train accessible to disabled people in Alicante, and travelled to Madrid by AVE. Despite assurances from the railway company that the Atendo service was available to all persons with disabilities, and that Altaria trains running between Murcia and Madrid have the infrastructure for all wheelchairs when Francisca and her son reached the station at Carmen they were told that as the chair would not fold they could not travel to Atocha from there. Francisca and Adrián have completed the necessary claim forms from both companies and have reported the case to the Organización de Consumidores y Usuarios (OCU), and have requested help from the various Associations for the Disabled of Murcia. ‘It is unacceptable that in these times we continue to meet these nasty and unfair situations.’ Said Adrián, who has to ask for time off work to take his mother to Madrid.
Nadal claims second US Open crown
Rafa Nadal has claimed his second US Open crown with a four-set victory over World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. Nadal bagged his 13th Grand Slam title, beating the Serb 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in just over three hours. The Spaniard was pushed hard in a brutal slugging match, during which both players displayed the best tennis of this year’s US Open. His comeback from a seven-month injury break is being described as nothing short of miraculous. “Having this success is unbelievable. British man, 34, dies in hotel balcony fall in Benidorm
A British tourist has died after falling from a fifthfloor hotel room in Benidorm whilst on a stag party weekend. National Police and paramedics in the Costa Blanca town were called out when the 34year-old man fell off the balcony, but he is said to have been killed outright as a direct result of his injuries as he landed. Officers are investigating the cause of death, although they have already ruled out that any violence may have been involved and are treating it as accidental. From inquiries to date, it appears he may have got off the lift at the wrong floor – number five instead of 13, where his room was – and, when he got no response after knocking on the door, attempted to get into the room through the window by climbing round the balcony. He landed on the first-floor terrace, near the kitchens, and a passerby alerted reception after hearing the impact and initially believing it was a heavy object or part of
the building which had fallen. They went to assess the situation and found it was one of their guests, who was already dead. The 12 people in the party were staying in several different rooms and had booked for four nights, says the management of the unnamed hotel in the Rincón de Loix district. His friends who were with him on the stag weekend, having arrived on the Costa Blanca on Thursday, apparently went home without him and without telling him after a night out. The Foreign Office has been informed but it is not yet known whether the deceased’s next of kin have been advised. Neither has it been confirmed whether or not the deceased is the groom, although initial investigations show he may be. All of the party are believed to have been drinking large quantities of alcohol, due to the nature of the weekend away.

Three children left locked in hot Gibraltar Tug-of-war: Customs officer run over by motorcyclist trying to avoid the queues car as parents go to beach
A couple who left their three young children in a locked car in the heat in order to go to the beach have been arrested in Benalmádena, Málaga. According to press reports, the father, 48, and mother, 39 had left them with no ventilation or water at the hottest part of the day. A member of the public saw the children shut in the car in a car park near the beach and unable to escape, sweating profusely and feeling dizzy, all of which put them at serious risk of heatstroke. This was at around 14.45hrs on Wednesday last week, but the news has only just been released. Firefighters were called out and cut the children free from the vehicle, then traced the parents who were arrested. Police say the children did not want to go to the beach, insisting they went to another one where they could hire a pedalo, resulting in a family argument and the parents saying, “well, you can stay in the car, then.” The nationality of the family has not been revealed.
A Guardia Civil officer at the Gibraltar border was knocked over by a motorcyclist last Wednesday morning who was trying to dodge police and get past the inspections on commuters heading into and out of the Rock. The policeman suffered minor injuries, says the Spanish interior ministry, but these are being checked to make sure there is nothing more serious hidden under the surface. This is the second incident of its type in the customs inspection queue
Driver found with Gibraltar monkey in car on Madrid motorway Guardia Civil officers in Madrid have seized a Gibraltarian monkey which they found in a car heading for France. They saw a basket in the back of the car, and the driver tried to convince them it had a dog in it. But when police opened the basket, they found a Gibraltar monkey, which is an endangered species. The driver was unable to show any documentation for the animal, so it was taken by the Guardia Civil’s environmental wing, SEPRONA and is being housed in the Acuárium Zoo in Madrid until the alleged owner can prove it is his monkey. Given that it has already been identified as a Gibraltar monkey, it is likely it does not belong to the driver stopped on the R-15 and will be returned to the wild. These are the only species of monkey which live wild in Europe – otherwise they are mainly found in the Atlas mountains in southern Morocco.

On August 6, a Gibraltar-registered car driver ignored the officer’s attempt to pull him over for inspection and continued on his way, knocking the policeman over in the process. The officer suffered injuries severe enough that he had to be off work for a few days. When police caught up with the car, it had been abandoned in the car park next to the border and several cartons of contraband cigarettes
were found inside. Guardia Civil officers say they are suffering stress and insults from people stuck for hours in the queue. But commuters crossing the border say they have undergone bullying behaviour from police and seen them deliberately destroy private property with no motives. Gibraltar authorities hand out bottles of water to workers, who are forced to wait for up to seven hours in direct sunlight.

Spain’s roads have claimed a total of 235 lives this summer alone – although this figure is 10 per cent less than in 2012, according to the ministry of traffic. A total of 113 drivers and passengers lost their lives in July. Most deaths occur on minor roads, with 175 killed here and another 60 on motorways. Motorbike accidents, however, have seen a rise in fatalities with 46 deaths on the roads in July and August, compared to 39 last year.
According to the ministry of traffic, 17 of the deceased were not wearing a seatbelt – including a 12-year-old child. But awareness campaigns about seatbelts appear to be working, they say, since the percentage of fatal victims travelling without one was 16 per cent this year compared to 26 per cent last year. The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) cited the usual reasons for accidents causing deaths – distraction, tiredness, speeding, and drinkdriving.
Abortion Law Reform To Be Finalised In October
A reform to the existing abortion law is set to be launched in October, says minister for justice Alberto RuizGallardón. Although he does not give details of the final draft, the minister – and former mayor of Madrid – insists it will be in keeping with the PP’s original stance and ‘respects the rights of women’. Ruiz-Gallardón denied rumours that the party was divided over the contents, and stressed that the final law will have the unanimous approval of all members. So far, plans for changing the abortion law text have divided the nation, since it will be considerably more restrictive than the existing legislation drawn up by the socialists during their reign between 2004 and the end of 2011. During a well attended meeting, director Geoff Hall cast for their next play – the classic farce “Not Now Darling”. The play is set in the 1960’s and revolves around many misunderstandings with fur coats. Adhoc Siesta will be performing the play, written by “The King of Farce” Ray Cooney, at San Fulgencio’s Cardinal Belluga Theatre on November 14th – 16th. They are appealing for anyone who would like to lend their full length fur coats to contact them. The play calls for 2 of the actresses to wear only a fur coat, hence the need for them to be full length so that their modesty is covered, if nothing else! The idea coat would be a mink, ocelot or leopard print and 2 beaver coats. Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s Association This year’s memory walk (El Camino de la Memoria) organised by the Alzheimer’s Association is taking place to celebrate World Alzheimer’s Day, which this year is on Saturday, September 21st. The walk will start at 5.00 pm and commence from the main square in the town, proceed along the Vista Alegro paseo to the Punta Margalla, which is the cape with the Egyptian style columns on it, and then return to the main square by the same route . There is an entry fee of five euros per person in aid of AFA Torrevieja and everyone is encouraged to get their friends and family to sponsor them. The Welcome Group, a voluntary organisation based in the Mazarron area of Murcia region, held its August dance at Mariano’s Restaurant, Camposol in aid of Age Concern Costa Calida. The event was originally planned as an open-air Summer party but, when the rainclouds gathered over Camposol, plan B was put into operation and the dance was relocated inside Mariano’s spacious function room. The B-Boppers provided the entertainment – a trio of musicians/singers with an endless repertoire of music which kept the dance floor full all evening. 150 people attended the event and a fantastic 800€ was raised through ticket sales and the raffle. Age Concern are very grateful to Rosemary, the Welcome Group and all their supporters for making it such a successful and enjoyable night. Only three per cent of Spain’s tax evaders took advantage of the ‘fiscal amnesty’ launched by the government in 2012, says the tax authorities’ technicians’ union GESTHA. This means a total of 97 per cent of dodgers remain hidden, and a reporter earlier this summer showed that the majority of tax avoiders are large companies rather than small businesses or sole traders. Minister of finance Cristóbal Montoro’s ‘amnesty’, which allowed anyone who had dodged their tax duties to come forward and declare their assets voluntarily with no questions asked and no fear of legal reprisal, paying a total of 10 per cent tax on them. This netted nearly 1.2 billion euros for the government in unpaid duties, but was less than half of the 2.5 billion they had
predicted initially.
Two-thirds of this came from Spain’s wealthiest regions, Madrid and Barcelona, making up 760 million of the 1.2 billion, with the rest coming from Valencia (124 million), Andalucía (65 million) and Galicia (44 million). The funds amassed by the State for ‘complementary tax declarations’ where ‘forgotten’ items are declared later after initially being omitted by the contributor brought in 27.5 per cent less in 2012 than in 2011 – 726 million euros compared to 1,001 million. GESTHA says 42 billion euros in taxes escape the authorities every year, and the worst offenders are large corporations and extremely wealthy individuals. They are calling for more human and financial resources to fight tax fraud and say the amnesty idea did not work.

This month sees the launch of the UK shingles vaccination programme for the elderly. All adults aged 70 and those aged 79 will be offered a jab. This is great for anyone vulnerable to this painful condition which affects one in five adults. Shingles, or herpes zoster, is an infection of a nerve and the area of skin around it. Around 800,000 people will be eligible for the vaccine. Why is the vaccine only being offered to people aged 70 or 79? It’s a catch-up programme. Each year, all those who are 70 and all those who are 79 will be vaccinated. It is the quickest and most cost-effective way of getting the most at-risk people vaccinated. After nine years, it’ll just be offered to people when they reach 70. Why do people get shingles? Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles. The virus lies inactive in your nerve cells for life. Shingles is a reactivation of this chickenpox virus which appears as a painful, sore rash. Can anyone get shingles? It affects 20 per cent of the population and is most common in adults. It gets you when you’re down and your immune system is weak. How can I opt into the vaccination? Your GP will offer a single jab in the arm.

If it’s just a rash, why is the vaccine necessary? Shingles is very painful and causes great suffering. While the rash usually lasts two to three weeks, people often have permanent pain in the area of the rash. This neuralgia is debilitating and very difficult to treat. One in 1,000 people over 70 will die from shingles. Can you have the jab if you’ve had shingles? Yes. Once you have had shingles you are at a higher risk than normal of getting it again. The vaccine will make a repeated attack less likely. Can you get the vaccine if you are under 70? It is licensed for the over 50s and you can get the jab privately. If you have a medical condition that puts you at higher risk of shingles, chat to your doctor about whether it is worth it.

Speed camera ‘errors’ invalidate fines
A leading motoring organisation has slammed the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) for ‘illegal’ speed-camera margins which have led to thousands of drivers being fined when they should not have been. The Spanish Automobile Association (AEA) says the DGT was using an obsolete law to fine motorists, and has called for action to be taken. According to the AEA, a rule known as the UNE 26444 which was drawn up in 1992 and ceased to be effective in 2006 establishes margins for error relating to speeds which are much more restrictive than permitted by Spanish road traffic laws. Fixed speed cameras allow for a three-kilometreper-hour margin – meaning on a motorway with a limit of 120, drivers can be fined for travelling at more than 123 kilometres per hour – and mobile speed traps allow a seven-kilometreper-hour margin. In other words, if a driver is caught at 123 kilometres per hour, it may be considered he or she was travelling exactly at the speed limit given that a threekilometre margin for error is allowed, but if a camera catches the same driver apparently travelling at 124 kilometres, the minimum figure acceptable would in fact be 121 kilometres – even though, at this speed, the car speed-o-meter may register slightly less and leave the motorist being fined despite being within the permitted limit. But a Ministerial Order launched in December
2006, replacing UNE 26444, meant the calculations by static speed cameras were taken to be up four kilometres per hour out and mobile speed guns by seven, either above or below the figure recorded, which could mean thousands of drivers given the benefit of the doubt if their speed was only slightly over the limit or if they were indeed speeding, but were on the cusp of two fine levels. This was updated in 2010 and the margins lifted to five kilometres for fixed cameras with speeds of up to 100 kilometre per hour, and five per cent for static cameras and seven per cent for mobile guns with speeds exceeding 100 kilometres per hour. The maximum error percentage is used where the DGT cannot be certain of the exact figure. But the AEA says that since 2010, the DGT has still been applying the UNE 26444 criteria, meaning tens of thousands of motorists have been fined
unnecessarily, or those on the cusp suffered larger fines than they legally should have to pay and others faced criminal charges when these should have only been civil. Precedents in Europe exist whereby such fines have been reduced or scrapped, including one in Belgium which states that a breach of road traffic codes of conduct cannot be accredited where the means with which evidence was obtained are linked to an obsolete law. In Spain, for all other traffic offences including parking, jumping red lights or disobeying traffic signals whether in error or deliberately, the police are not obliged to provide proof and the officer’s word is considered sound evidence, with the onus being on the driver to prove he or she did not commit the offence. Officers are not obliged to stop the driver and inform them if they catch them in the act of committing a road traffic breach

Spain joins G20’s public condemnation of Syria chemical attacks
Spain has called for ‘sound explanation’ from Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad over the responsibility for the recent chemical bomb attacks in Damascus which killed 1,400 people, of whom 400 were children. Mariano Rajoy’s government is in full agreement with the USA that evidence ‘clearly points to the fact’ that the government of Syria was behind the ‘horrible’ attack in the suburbs of the capital, which they ‘totally condemn’. During the present G20 summit meeting in St Petersburg, Russia, the 11 countries including Spain collectively made a public statement to Al-Assad, calling for an ‘international’ explanation and saying that ‘breaking world laws’ by using chemical weapons ‘would not be tolerated’ and ‘could not be repeated’. Those who commit such ‘atrocities’ should be held accountable, said the statement, released by the Whitehouse. The 11 countries of the G20 say chemical warfare ‘dramatically reduces people’s safety’ and is totally unacceptable under any circumstances. They have called for the United Nations’ Safety Commission to give its verdict ‘as soon as possible’ on a possible attack on Syria. Spain is not likely to be affected by any decision to wage war on Syria, since the general consensus of the G20 has been not to send troops to the country – meaning no Spanish soldiers would be deployed there.
And minister of defence Pedro Morenés has denied claims that the USA had approached Spain and asked them to lend troops for a military mission. British PM David Cameron has accepted being outvoted over commencing hostilities towards Syria, and decided against it. US president Barack Obama has assured that a conflict with Syria would ‘not be another Iraq or Afghanistan’ and is thinking more along the lines of sending air forces to the Middle East, bombing the arsenal of chemical weapons, and withdrawing immediately. The G20, Spain included, has admitted that the Syria crisis cannot be solved by military means and are hoping for a political solution. They have condemned the ‘violations of basic human rights’ taking place in the Arab country en masse. Morenés said this statement by the G20 was not a declaration of war but a global message saying the use of chemical bombs was not acceptable - “not because the G20 has just said so, but because international laws say so,” the Spanish defence minister clarified. He said Spain was in support of this worldwide stance shown by other G20 members – South Korea, France, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the UK, the USA, Japan, Turkey, Canada and Australia.

I understand that if I sell my property I needtothink about the following expenses: solicitors fee, capital gains tax and plusvalía tax. What is plusvalía tax , and how is it calculated? A . Up to recently this was a small tax when you sold or inherited , but now it can be a high amount and needs to be considered before the transaction. It is charged on the transfer of ownership of a property by sale, inheritance etc. . This tax is a local tax charged by each municipality on the increase in value of Urban land in its own district land and is distinct from Capital Gains Tax. It is important to realize that the tax is charged on land alone, not on the buildings that may stand on the land. The rates of tax are set by each municipality and can vary widely between neighbouring municipalities.The tax is based on the increase in the official, that is to say the “Catastral”, value of the land which a property occupies. This is the same value that is used to set your local property tax or “IBI” and can be found on the bill for your “IBI” issued by your local ayuntamiento each year and is shown as the “valor del suelo”.The actual price at which a property changes hands, or the value attributed to it if is the subject of a gift or inheritance is irrelevant. Calculation: The Plusvalia is calculated as a function of the catastral value of the land and the number of years of ownership (up to a maximum of 20 years). The higher the catastral value and the number of years of ownership, the higher the tax. Plusvalia tax = Catastral value of the land x Yearly percentage of value’s increase x Number of years of ownership x Tax rate The yearly percentage of value’s increase and the tax rate are fixed by the Town Halls.They are established locally. Up to now, when a Town Hall had updated the catastral values, usually with really high increases of the values compared to the existing ones, article 107.3 of the Law had established that on the following five years after the revision of the values, the Town Halls had to apply a deduction of 40 to 60 % to the catastral value. If a Town Hall made not contemplation of this rule teh law established an automatic deduction of 60%. However new Law passed in 2012 has changed that situation allowing the Town Halls to eliminate those deductions, which is why a loto of people are suddenly paying much
higher rates and find themselves with an unfairly high plusvalíaa tax when they sell. On a sale of a property it is the responsibility of the seller to pay the tax, but if the seller fails to pay this responsibility may be passed to the buyer, who would then have to recuperate the money form this seller. If the property is being inherited or is the subject of some other type of gift it is the beneficiary or recipient of the property who is liable to pay the tax. Certain transactions are exempt from the Plusvalia Tax, the main ones which are likely to affect the general public are the transfer of property between spouses who are divorcing, or to children to comply with Court judgments, and “aportaciones” or transfers to companies in which spouses are the only shareholders which may be used for tax planning. The amount of the tax that will be charged on a transaction will depend firstly on the Catastral value of the land which the property occupies, and secondly on the length of time since it last changed hands. If you are selling an individual house which stands on a large plot which you have owned for a considerable length of time the amount of the Plusvalia Tax could be many thousands of Euros. On the other hand, as the tax is charged on the value of land alone, the amount of Plusvalia Tax charged on a flat in a block which you have not owned for very long the tax may be quite modest. For those of you who are considering rearranging your financial affairs to take advantage of tax planning schemes, the amount of Plusvalia tax that may be due is one of a number of elements, which include the Notary and other fees that may be payable, which you need to consider when balancing the costs and benefits of these schemes. Depending on the amount of Plusvalia, it may be cheaper to make a gift of the property rather than enter into more complex arrangements with higher Notary and other fees. The time for paying the Plusvalia Tax is within 30 days of a sale or gift between living people, or 6 months of the date of death on an inheritance. Your town hall can advise you of the amount of Plusvalia that may be payable on a transaction involving your property, or in many cases it is possible to obtain the calculation “on line”, but as I always write in concluding these articles, if in doubt take professional advice.

To try to put the show into perspective, and give you some idea of the commitment needed for the show, if you think of attending a dance class once a week, the celebrities will put in (once the going starts to get tough) a years classes in just one week! This may explain why they improve somewhat faster than you will if you start to learn to dance, apart from the fact that they are also having one to one
tuition, which again is much more intense than attending a class. The punishment their bodies will go through is extreme and it is little wonder that some of them gain injuries during the course of the show. To win the show it is literally the survival of the fittest! To perform and dance to this standard you have to be physically very fit, you have to be able to act, to portray the individual characteristics of each dance and you need supreme concentration and determination levels to push forward when the going gets tough. Quite a tall order for a simple dance show?? As always, I can’t wait to see how this develops and who will make the greatest journey during this years show. I’ll be with you weekly when the show starts giving you my own personal interpretation and opinion of the dancers. Brave man lures escaped lion into car A motorist has been hailed a hero after luring an escaped lion into the back of his car in Kuwait. The man spotted the lion prowling the streets of Kuwait city’s upmarket Bayan suburb, reports The Mirror. He trapped the beast inside the vehicle by slamming the door, then jumped inside, too, and phoned police. But the young adult male lion became angry and started to rip up the interior. Officers managed to transfer the beast into the back of a police car and

delivered it to Kuwait’s Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources. An Australian pig is nursing an almighty hangover after downing 18 cans of lager and going on the rampage. The Mirror reports that the pig stole beer from campers before trying to fight a cow and have a drunken swim, eventually passing out after the epic bender in Port Hedland, Western Australia. A camper told ABC News: “It was in the middle of the night and it was these people camping opposite us and they heard this crunching of the can and they got their torch out and shone it on the pig and there he was scrunching away at their cans.” “Some other people camped right on the river saw him running around their vehicle being chased by a cow. It was going around and around and then it went into the river and swam across to the middle.” Australian authorties are still trying to find the animal but have so far had no success. “It was last seen near the river itself, under a tree,” spokeswoman Fionna Findley said. “I think it’s nursing its head today.”

One of the most favourite fruit at this time of year are the peaches. The peach is actually a native of China, but was brought from Persia to the Mediterranean basin by the Romans. Early peach varieties are grown in Andalusia and Valencia, and late ones along the banks of the river Ebro (La Rioja, Navarre and Aragón) are called Melocotón de Calanda.

Lastly on the subject of peaches, the flat Saturn peaches or also known as doughnut peaches or Donut Peaches (for those who can’t spell) are readily available in supermarkets, but they are not native to Spain. They have not been genetically modified - they are a bona fide peach species, first grown in China in the 19th century. I went and bought some at the Lidl today, and the girl at the till had no idea what they were. This led to an animated discussion amongst the Spanish people in the queue who had no clear idea either, nor did the 2 shop assistants. They would not believe me that they were peaches! Why? Because they did not have a ‘fuzzy’ texture and looked more like Nectarines. Finally after at least a 5 minutes where everyone had given their 2 cents worth, they went and looked at the label, and confirmed what I already knew.... yes, they were Peaches!! So when you are next out at your local market, grab some lovely peaches, eat with or without the skin and keep a

Between October 25–31, gardeners and community groups across Britain will unite in an effort to halt the decline of UK species. Hedgehog numbers have reduced by a third since the millennium and tortoiseshell butterflies, once common in gardens, have declined by 77% (State of Nature Report, 2013). The RHS and The Wildlife Trusts (TWT) are spearheading a new initiative to help halt declines such as these, and are calling on the public to get involved in ‘Wild About Gardens Week’ (25–31 October, 2013). Chris Baines, Vice President of The Wildlife Trusts, said: “The nation’s gardens are hugely important for wildlife and as a habitat network they are second to none”. “There are many simple ways in which we can make our gardens naturally richer. According to a recent study by Spanish real estate portal, idealista.com, at the end of August this year, the average price of a second-hand home stood at 1,764 euros per square metre, which represents a decrease of 9% compared to the same month last year. During the month of August, resale home prices lowered by an average of 0.6%. The monthly decline was widespread across all regions except Navarra, where prices rose by 0.2%. The most pronounced declines during the month of August were registered in Castilla y Leon, where the price of previously owned homes fell by 1.5%, followed by CastillaLa Mancha and Galicia, both with a drop of 1.4%. The portal’s data shows that the Basque Country remains the most expensive region in which to buy a second-hand home, with the average price standing at 2,938 euros per square metre, ahead of Madrid (2,648 euros per square metre) and Catalonia (1,962 euros). In contrast, El Economista reported that the cheapest home resales are to be found in Extremadura (1,097 euros per square metre), Murcia (1,100 euros) and Castilla-La Mancha (1,108 euros). With regard to the major real estate markets, in August the average price of secondhand housing rose in Barcelona (+0.8%), as well as in Madrid (+0.2%) and Seville (+0.1%). Faith the pony who has a prosthetic leg has a new friend. Faith’s carer’s Sue and Rod Weeding, co founders of The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales saw young Cieran Kelso, an 8 year old double amputee from Northwich in Cheshire, with his parents, being interviewed on BBC Breakfast a few days ago.
The interview was with Cieran and his parents Gary and Gemma. Cieran had both his legs amputated below the knee when he was only 13 months old. He had contracted meningococcal septicemia. Cieran had seen the film “Dolphin Tale” starring Morgan Freeman and Kris Kristofferson and wanted to swim with Winter. After constant fundraising, which incidentally is still ongoing for Cierans future, the couple were able to afford a pair of prosthetic flippers to allow Cieran to fulfill his dream which he did this year. Sue explained “The TV was on in the background and I heard Winter, the dolphin from Florida with a prosthetic tail fin mentioned. I was intrigued because we had a discussion with Dwayne Mara who lives in New Orleans about this..He makes Faith’s and Molly the ponies prosthetic legs and is friends with Kevin Carroll from Alabama who made the fin for this dolphin. Winter was caught up in a rope in a crab trap and Faith was severely injured by a rope wrapped round her leg while tied to a tree so there circumstances were similar.
Cieran the mayor and his councilors have extended a warm welcome to this brave lad and his family when they come to visit Faith and have said they would like to meet them personally. 30 ml sunflower oil ~ 2 clove(s) garlic, crushed 5 ml finely grated ginger ~ 30 ml Thai red curry paste 1 x 400ml can coconut milk 250 ml chicken or vegetable stock 200g mangetout, halved lengthways 1 red pepper, thinly sliced ~ 2 pak-choi, quartered 4 kaffir lime leaves ~ 10 ml grated palm sugar 2 lemongrass stalks, bruised 400g skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced Chopped coriander, to garnish Steamed jasmine rice, to serve
method
Heat the oil in a large, non-stick wok or frying pan. Add the garlic and ginger and stir-fry for 20-30 seconds. Stir in the curry paste and stir-fry for 30 seconds. Pour in the coconut milk, then add the stock, mangetout, red pepper, pak-choi, lime leaves, sugar, lemongrass and chicken. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer gently for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through. Season, remove from heat and sprinkle over the coriander. Serve at once with jasmine rice.

My Better Idea
I was confident that I knew the way to our destination. I had been there before, admittedly some time ago, but my mental map of the upand-down intricacies of Zurgena was still fresh, added to which a life-long residency in Devon, which in parts is less than straightforward, has given me a pretty good instinct for finding places. I brushed aside Pete’s advice to ring up and ask for directions with the fateful words ‘I know the way, I remember it from last time.’ We sailed confidently into the unsuspecting village, turned left on the single track road up the hill and parked outside our destination. ‘Told you I knew the way.’ I smugly pointed out. Business concluded, it was time to head home. ‘Better back down’ Pete advised. ‘You’ll never turn round here.’ He was so obviously right that the advice was unnecessary, but I had a better idea that didn’t involve backing at all. ‘No, I’ll go on. There’s a plaza at the top, and I can just drive round it and come back down again. That is

what I did last time.’ With a perfectly executed hill start I drove on, passing a huddle of elders, a child and two dogs. They waved in a friendly manner, except the child, who was too small, and the dogs, who didn’t care. About 6 yards further on I came abruptly and unexpectedly to a dead end. I looked in the rear view mirror to see that my audience had spread out across the road, to get a better view of what passes in Zurgena for entertainment. I reversed gingerly through the throng, who were by now cheerfully entering into the spirit of the thing. I took the advice of the matriarch of the group and retracted my mirror (she tapped it with her walking stick) and directed by an eloquently waved broom I followed a sprightly male elder down a tiny steep alleyway that I hadn’t even noticed. At the end he stopped and called to his friend, who abandoned his vegetable patch in order to direct me with his hoe down another tiny cobbled alleyway. Preceded by one of the dogs, and watched by native inhabitants of all ages, who appeared at windows and doorways as I passed I steered Del through squeezes through which only a Renault Clio with retracted wing mirrors or a donkey would have fitted. Then suddenly we were back to civilization. Pete was right – I should have backed down!
When a Vampire’s Armpit is the Lesser Evil It’s funny how certain attitudes change as soon as you move permanently to Spain. What may once have been a holiday destination - with its night life, numerous restaurants and the glorious sunshine – now takes on a wholly new aspect. In short, we become blasé. This is natural of course, and it’s good. Whilst we had to save our hard earned cash for the annual or biannual vacations, with the intention of blowing it on food, booze and entertainment, it’s obvious that the situation has to radically change when the holiday destination becomes the permanent home. Not only would the cost be prohibitive – unless you have the salary of a newspaper editor – but the novelty would soon diminish and disappear. Speaking for ourselves, it is true that we can now afford to eat out far more than we could back in the Mother country, but it’s nice nevertheless, to have an evening out in a good restaurant with friends and still

regard it as a treat. Two friends from England were staying with us recently, and we decided that it would be in order to show them the great metrolops of Torrevieja after dark. This is something we only like doing ourselves once or twice during the summer months because we normally choose to avoid the babble and tourist din like the plague. But it’s good on the odd occasion to experience the night time atmosphere and vibrancy of the town during July or August and an absolute obligation if we have friends staying. And so, as duty demanded, we made our way into a packed and noisy town. After a meander around the bustling evening market, we strolled around town pointing out the various sites of interest introducing our friends to churros con chocolate en route, and we eventually found ourselves in a waterfront cocktail bar. ‘Found ourselves’ is a bit of a misnomer because our arrival at the bar was deliberate, calculating and entirely through choice and anyway, it was the perfect base from which to people watch. The list of cocktails was mind blowing. Not so much because of the sheer number of concoctions on offer, but the outrageous names that many of them had - most of which would be instantly censored if I were unwise enough to include them here - and achieving the near impossible, by making me blush. We bought beers for the first round, simply to slake our thirst and rinse away the dust of the day - apart from the elfinlike Mrs. Bird who was our driver for the night and who wisely decided upon an
agua con gas with ice and lemon and a little paper brolly to tart it up a bit. And which, in view of the other exotica on the menu, should have been sold as Bridge Over Bubbled Waters or H2Ohh! They could have charged three times as much. I was still enjoying my lager when our two friends called the waitress over to order their first proper cocktails – an attractive girl with pieces of shrapnel in her nose and bottom lip, and legs up to Benidorm. I signaled that I was not ready to order and off she dashed to get the drinks, her rear end reminding me of a sack of hyper active ferrets. She was soon back at high speed - the energy of the ferrets undiminished – and I remember thinking that she must be on piecework. “Ready to order sir?” she purred. “Um, well . . .” “Sex On The Beach is cool.” She interrupted. Well now. I thought about this. But on balance I decided that a nice cocktail was what I really needed - after all, my lovely wife was in attendance and anyway, the sand gets everywhere. “Don’t take this personally” I told the waitress, “but how about ‘Up Yours Sideways’” which was a blend of tropical fruits, a poncy liqueur, some spicy things that I had never heard of and my favourite tipple – dark rum. I don’t think the others

Alquerian society is seen as godless, debauched and anarchic by the more sanctimonious observer. While most would agree it sounds like terrific fun the Monks of the order of St Jude the Daft, decided to save our wayward Pueblo. The people of Alqueria, seizing their chance sold the Monks, who were blinded by religious fervour two overpriced dilapidated houses on the Calle Mirador. The Monks set to with a will and soon the Monastery of St. Jude the Daft (Alqueria) opened its doors for business. The Monks waited, and waited, and waited. The only taker was Loco Paco who mistook the Monks for a rare antipodean marsupial and tried to lasso the Abbot. The people of Alqueria gave the monastery a wide berth. Monks in penance covered themselves, their clothes and anything in reach with a mixture of cow dung, goat’s droppings and pomegranate flesh. Accompanied with a shrill wail punctuated by nasal grunts it gave rise to a totally nauseating spectacle. Their foul smelling clothes were undoubtedly responsible for some dirty habits. As for the spiritual salvation of the populace little headway was made. The Abbot summoned Sacerdote del Semblante Lánguido, the Village Priest on a consultative basis. Now these Monks in fact very few monks anywhere have had dealings with an existentialist priest. The monastic fraternity has been well shielded from this kind of thinking. The more the priest hammered home the meaninglessness of the universe and the contingency of all life the more the Monks became electrified. The credo of living for today and the understanding that tomorrow is just an unreachable hypothetical point in free space hit home. The Abbot tried to quell this philosophical uprising, but the choice between ritual bathing in manure and of abstinence came a poor second to the Priest’s hedonistic view of life. The Abbot was a trier however and had faith, misplaced perhaps in his flock, he suggested a trial. It was to be the old struggle between perceived good and perceived evil. Which is which depended on your viewpoint. The Abbot armed the Monks with their faith but the Priest introduced them to Manuela. Consequently the Monks were led into a trial of temptation, they all failed miserably. Red-eyed and dissipated the Monks began reinventing their order. The Abbot fled to Britain where he now councils prime ministers who have been rejected by their Parliament. The Monks’ habits are now sequined and thigh length. The Monastery renamed ‘St. Jude the Daft a Go Go’.

My much better other half merely sat there multitasking - drumming the table with her fingers, sipping her water and firing
cruise missiles at me with her eyes. But our trendy young waitress was unmoved and turning on her heel thus displaying the menagerie once again, she hurried away. Why do young girls today look as if they have been caught in a grenade blast, and why can’t they call cocktails Singapore Sling and Screwdriver like they used to I mused. Damn it, I’m getting old.

Still Space to be amazed
So there I am, balancing on one leg, the radio in one hand, trying desperately to get any sort of signal. What’s more frustrating is that I’m not trying to find a station in Auckland-which is on the outskirts of New Zealand if my geography is right. No, I’m trying to listen to our local radio station, Smooth FM, which is broadcasting from only ten minutes away from our house. After finally locating a signal and welding the tuner to the frequency, reception is still about as weak as Neil Armstrong’s signal from the Moonwhich is a little further than ten minutes from our house! But you see this is what I love about the radio, it is so unpredictable, you never know what you may hear. Those of you who spent hours listening to Radio Luxembourg will remember how, annoyingly, the signal used to slowly disappear every so often, usually during the record you had been waiting for hours to hear, but never, unfortunately, when they sneaked in “Puff the Magic Dragon” ! Actually, radio reception has caused me some embarrassing moments. Many years ago-well, not really THAT many-I heard a track off Elton John’s new album which I really liked. It convinced me that I should go to the record shop and buy the album. Off I went to my record shop of choice, NEMS, and strode confidently up to the counter and asked for the Elton John album with the song “Penny and the Gents” on it. As much as they told me that no such song existed, I told them that, as Radio Luxembourg played it, then I must be right. Anyway, I left the shop empty handed and it was only a few months later that I found out the song was actually called “Bennie and the Jets”. I never went to NEMS again and still blush when Elton sings that song! Graham is married to Helen and has a daughter, Alice. He lives part of the year near Albox, but works in Qatar, teaching. Sorry, you’ll have to excuse me, the signal is fading again and they’re playing that song by Coldplay, “Pair of Tights”. I’ve got to find somewhere that will allow me to hear the song properly. Oh, hang on, the signals come back and, guess what, I’ve done it again. “Pair of Tights” is actually called “Paradise”. Oh well, one consolation is that at least NEMS has closed down so there is no prospect of me making a fool of myself in there again!
Isn’t it cute - the Olinguito With the world seemingly shrinking as communication and travel becomes easier and faster it’s refreshing to know we can still be amazed by this beautiful blue planet we inhabit. Only last week scientists announced the discovery of a canyon in Greenland that’s 750km long and up to 800m deep making it almost twice as long as the Grand Canyon. It was discovered by bouncing radio waves from planes flying overhead to map the rock underneath the ice. The canyon is buried by the Greenland ice sheet which in places is 3kms
thick; the pressure from this huge mass of ice above it has squashed central Greenland to 200m below sea level whereas before it was 500m above sea level. Loving facts and figures I took out a calculator and a Bic biro to conduct further research. Assuming roughly that the blunt end of a biro is 1cm square and that the biro was buried vertically at the bottom of the canyon it would have the equivalent of 276 kilo bags of sugar precariously balanced on top of it. Knowing that it would take 10,000 biros pointing straight
down to fill a square metre and that the canyon is 6km wide and 750km long that’s a hell of a lot of sugar to buy at the supermarket for the purposes of my virtual experiment. No wonder the Greenland’s crust has been pushed down 700m. The UK is affected by this ‘springboard’ effect too, after the last glaciers left 20,000 year ago Scotland has been slowly bouncing back with some parts predicted to elevate another 10cms over the next 100 years. This will help counteract any sea level rises from global warming. This is not so good for England and Wales as they are at the other end of this geological See Saw and they will possibly drop 5cm in the same time period. This means any average sea level rises will be felt much more down south. Nepal in the Himalayas has over 1300 peaks with the two most famous being Everest and Annapurna. About a 1000 have never been climbed by Westerners at least, possibly the odd yeti has had a pop. Amazingly lots of these mountains don’t have names and the Nepalese government has decided to honour Hilary and Tensing who were the first to scale Everest in May 1953 by naming a mountain after each of them. Two French climbers
who first climbed Annapurna, Herzog and Lachenal are also being honoured in the same way. In a bid to promote tourism an extra 165 mountains measuring up to 7999m will be opened up to climbers from next Spring. In the mountainous forests that cover Ecuador and Colombia a new species of mammal has been discovered. The Olinguito has a teddy bear like face, is the same size as a small cat and the smallest relative in the racoon family. It eats fruit and only comes out at night. Amazingly a female was captured in 1967 and was mistaken for another species called the Olingo. The poor lady was swapped from zoo to zoo for years as she refused to breed with all her potential male suitors as scientists thought she was just being fussy. Not quite so cuddly and considerably smaller at just a millimetre across, a new species of water beetle was recently discovered living right under the scientists’ noses; a river flows through the campus of Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines and the newly named Hydraena Ateneo has always lived there minding its own business amongst the rotting vegetation.

The forth (4th) letter of the Greek alphabet, and is also the number 4, is derived from the Phoenician letter ‘dalet’, from which we get our Roman D and the Cyrillic Д OR is it thinly disguised malware pretending to be the greatest gift since the Trojan Horse? Actually! Both! So! Why all this talk about Greek letters and malware? Well, this week, I’ve had a number of emails and people approach me concerning something that has been installed onto their machines and is now causing havoc. What is it? It is called Delta and is a program that offers a web search engine (delta-search. com) and toolbar which are being promoted through other free programs. So, in preparation for this article, I typed “Delta Toolbar” in my search favourite engine to find out more about it and was presented with page upon page of “How to remove Delta from your computer”. It took several hours of searching to find out what Delta really was! It is also defined by anti-virus and antimalware providers as a PUP or potentially unwanted program! This is because once installed on your computer, it will hijack your browser homepage and replace your default search engine. Furthermore, this program will display ads and sponsored links in your search results, and may collect search terms from your search queries.
So far it sounds annoying but not a great problem until you realise that not only are they collecting information about what you’re searching for, which is a heinous invasion of privacy, but compound the invasion by possibly (no absolute proof yet) accessing personal details that can be sold to unscrupulous individuals for the purposes of identity theft and similar acts of attrition. Like toolbars over the world, with a few rare exceptions, they positively invite viruses and other malware to set up home on your system. The real problems start when you try to remove it and although there are a few intriguing twists and wrinkles, the process is a predictable list of logical steps, and should take anyone between 30 minutes and 4 hours to completely remove it. First, uninstall it, and anything that you find and haven’t directly asked for. Second, Remove all reference from your internet browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome and others). Third, change your search engine option back to what it should be. Forth, Use a registry cleaner to (carefully) remove any references to it in the registry. Fifth, Run a good antimalware program to finally check that you have everything. Sixth, when all steps have been done and you still haven’t gotten rid of it, ring me! We all love to solve problems! Some people enjoy Suduko, while others do crosswords, more still indulge in quizzes and more power to them all. As technology seems littered with problems, I will find plenty to keep the “little grey cells” (Hercule Poirot) working this week and look forward to more email and conversations. Have fun :-)

Nevertheless everyone 04.09.13 As our website reflected, this days golf should have been played at Font del Llop, but due to hollow tinning at the course another alternative had to be found. This was not an easy task as there were 42 members and guests who wished to play and not everywhere has enough buggies to accommodate us, so we were grateful that Altorreal came to our rescue. Interestingly the yellow tees were back nearly on the whites so the course played it full length and also made the par threes difficult to reach. To add to this the rough had been left rather long and proved difficult to get out of it when you could find your ball. The bunkers were very wet in places so John Henderson being in the wet sand gave an almighty swing at the ball which promptly hit the rack and smashed it, he didn’t know he was that strong. Another member on finding his buggy wouldn’t work found another one and started to drive away only to find that it belonged to one of the members, oh

Torrevieja went into bat and soon wickets began to fall. With 9 overs gone and with 5 wickets down for 8 runs, the outcome was inevitable. Hercules had their first real effort on goal after an hour but the home defence kept them out. Thader were still creating chances but after seventy five minutes the visitors won a free kick just outside our area. I also have to say, and it´s not very often you can say this, the referee also had an excellent match, keeping the game going and no petty bookings. Well done ref.! Match Report – 4th September 2013. Yet another new venue for the members of TMGS and it has to be said that El Valle is probably the best of the IRM courses that we have visited, and although their greens have been hollow tined in the last couple of weeks, the secret was to aim at the hole and disregard the borrows etc. For some reason, it appeared that the members of the Silver Division found the course easier than those of the Gold Division and the top three on the day came from the Silver crowd with Sandra Twentyman claiming 3rd spot with 33 points, one behind Chris Hamblett on 34 points leaving the way for Ray Ewins to claim top spot in the Silver Division and top spot on the day with 36 points. The Gold Division obviously found the track a little harder and it only needed 31 points for Chris Oatley and Richard Wale to claim 2nd and 3rd spot and only 1 point more, 32, was enough for Steve Higgins to claim the top spot in that division. Not only was it a first for TMGS to visit El Valle, it was also a first for on golfer to claim 3 of the 4 NTP’s and this claim to fame went to Sandra Twentyman who left John Hillier to claim

ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY LAS COLINAS GOLF – 26th August 2013 DOUG MADDISON TROPHY This was the fourth year that the Doug Maddison Trophy was played for and the second time at Las Colinas. 20 members and guests played a medal for the above trophy. As you can imagine there were lots of UGHs OH’s which is called moaning when it was announced this year the competition would that the format was a medal. But there must have been something extra in the Las Colinas beverages as the scores returned were more that on par than if we had played a Stableford game. And you cannot keep the “Arfur” out of the frame adding two Nearest The Pins and Les Yates was not going to be out done either! EUROGOLF SOCIETY The first game of the Eurogolf 2013 season took place on Thursday 5 September with 42 members taking part at our home course of La Marquesa. A lower number than normal competed partly due to members still being on holiday and the fact that it was temporary greens. The competition was a Texas Scramble with beautiful warm conditions making it conducive to good scoring by those members taking part, although putting was more than a bit of a lottery due to temporary green which were far from perfect. Torry came back down to earth on Monday evening when they returned to their league programme after their famous 3-0 win in a friendly against their illustrious near neighbours, La Liga outfit Elche CF, which will live in the memory of those that witnessed it for some time to come. On Monday evening Torry overcame stubborn opposition in the shape of a youthful Torre Levante team 1-0 with a last minute goal from centre back Rafa. The friendly game against Elche CF attracted a gate of around 500 with the Mayor of Torrevieja being in attendance. Some supporters probably didn’t

Torry got off to a flyer and took the lead in the first minute when a pass from Obele found Alberto who steered the ball into the back of the net for a GOALLLLL to Torry 1-0. Torry competed well with Obele chasing down everything. Torry increased their lead after 21 minutes from a second GOALLLLL by Alberto who was first to the ball after the Elche keeper had blocked a fierce shot from Gasch. Torry had an escape just before the break when a volley from Aaron for Elche struck the crossbar. Torry made four changes at halftime. After 55 minutes Torry increased their lead further with a GOALLLLL direst from a free-kick by Dani Meseguer which took a slight deflection off the head of an Elche defender. A minute later Torry made a further 5 changes bringing on some of the youngsters in the squad for a run out against their illustrious opponents. Elche
pushed forward and had a number of opportunities to get on the score-sheet but were foiled by a series of exceptional saves by substitute keeper Carlos. On Monday evening in front of a modest crowd of just over 300, Torry returned to league duty. The weather forecasters got it wrong and the rain which they predicted would fall didn’t materialise. Torrevieja : Carrión, Vicente Boix, Alexis, Valdeolivas (Burguillos 45 ‘), Rafa, Dani Meseguer, Dani Lucas, Obele, Carrasco (Pastor 56’), Alberto (Gasch 71 ‘) and Micro. Not Used: Carlos Moreno and Eloy. In the first half the opposition shaded it and put quite a number of dangerous balls into the box which the Torry defence dealt with but not without some difficulty. Torry keeper Carrion ,who spreads himself well, twice thwarted efforts from close in with superb blocks. Torry did create chances themselves with the best two falling to Alberto but he struck the side netting with the first and then blazed over from the second. The referee let quite a bit ago in the first 30 minutes and then something snapped and he raised the yellow card no less than five times before the break. Torry took off Valdeolivas and brought on Burguillos who made an impact. Torry livened up in the second half and were the more offensive side without really testing the Torre

New European times place swimmers in top positions in Valencia and Spain. This week Beryl Altabas and Vicki Connolly travelled to Holland to represent Club Natacion Torrevieja and Spain in the 14th Arena European Masters Championships 2013. The event took place in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, Eindhoven, Holland. Over 5000 swimmers from 1194 clubs across Europe competed in a week long programme of events in the 50m pool, on the diving boards, with synchronized swimming and finally a 3km open water event. Both Vicki and Beth entered the 800m, 400m and 200m
Freestyle events in their age categories 45-49yrs and 6569yrs. Starting on Sunday, Beth swam first in the 800m women’s Freestyle and won 6th place, receiving a diploma with a time of 14:31:07. Vicki followed in 13th place with a new personal best of 12:04:93, knocking 43 seconds of her previous time and smashing her previous Valencian Community record. Next day both were in the pool again for the 400m women’s Freestyle event, Beth winning 8th place, a second diploma and a new personal best time of 7:06: 84. Vicki followed in 14th position in
Busters golf society On Friday 6th September we played our monthly stable ford at Alicante golf course , what a pleasure it was to play on this Seve designed course again , the staff were as usual pleasant and courteous , and congratulations to the greens staff for keeping this course in tip top condition , the greens were receptive and care was required when reading the contours which made the putting very tricky if you were the wrong side of the pin . Our first tee off time was 10:40 preceded by breakfast which was part of the offer being given by the club , 22 players teed off on time which is the norm for Alicante , the strong prevailing winds , which always seemed to be against us didn’t help our scores with 35 points being the best score of the day , however one of our
players , Chris Ives managed to get the societies first eagle since we formed Busters some eighteen months ago , this was achieved on the par 5 fourth hole well done Chris , one of our players said he had had an eagle but we had to advise him that eagles on the Mini Golf novelty putting course don’t count , the results for this months competition were nearest the pins , on hole three Dave pretty hole six Barry Grinsell holes eight and twelve Alan Gifford no NTP on hole fifteen and on hole seventeen Neil Metcalf each NTP received a sleeve of three Callaway golf balls , in third place with a score of thirty one points was Chris Ives runner up with thirty four points was Bill Fantom and our winner on the day with thirty five points was Dave Pretty , our winners

By Tuesday both were back in the pool for their final events of the championships. With fierce competition, the duo swam in the women’s 200m Freestyle event. Again Beth raced first with a time of 3:29:21 and was placed 13th in the 65-69yrs category. Vicki followed with another strong race gaining 24th place out of 52 swimmers in the 4549yrs category. At the same time she knocked a further 13 seconds off her PB with a new personal best of 2:46:77 and took a new Valencian Community record. The week’s events give both Beryl and Vicki new regional swimming records for the Communidad of Valencian and new Spanish rankings. Beth retains her first place (65-69yrs) and Vicki moves up to second (45-49yrs) in this year’s Spanish rankings in a 50m pool for the 800m and 400m Freestyle events. Both now look forward to the 2014 Winter Spanish National Competition in Majorca and hope more of the Torrevieja Masters will be joining them. ITV ORIHUELA RFC PREPARE FOR FIRST FRIENDLY The first friendly of the new season before the league starts was announced last week against Aloy on 21 September, time and venue to follow, well this is Spain. The first week of training went really well with well over 30 players turning up including new players joining the club and vets coming out of retirement to play in the second team this season. So it is upwards and onwards for the club. Also with the ladies team also growing from strength to strength, new players of all ages, both boys and girls as well as men and women are
always welcome. Also teams booking already to come over to play against Orihuela RFC next year is a great sign for the club and the direction it is going in. Also this week starts the rugby season in the UK with live rugby starting on Friday with Quins v Saints at 20.45 followed on Saturday with Australia v Argentina at 12.05 and then on Sunday Sarries v Gloucester at 15.00. All shown live at Bar Pepito in Fotmentera del Segura as it has BT Sport. Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and
Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15.
the inaugural “The Full Monte” Cup on an evening when umbrellas and rain coats were needed. Certainly the crowd of over 100 brave souls enjoyed the game. The first half was mostly one way traffic as the home side contained their higher division opponents and it was no surprise when Monte opened the scoring from the penalty spot, after 25 minutes. Diego stepped up and calmly slotted home. Despite further chances in the first 45 minutes, there were no further goals. Lots of changes in the second half, as is usual for these types of games. With the changes also came the best part of the game for the visitors who were unfortunate not to equalise. But with 10 minutes left on the clock, San Fulgencio scored a deserved equaliser and the game looked to be going to penalties. But Monte
manager threw on Vazquinho, who had not played any of the pre season matches due to injury. With almost the final kick of the game, Wallace did some sterling work through the middle, shrugged off the centre half and slotted the ball past the keeper. But his shot looked to be going short of the goal until Vazquinho, looking a touch offside it must be said, touched the ball home to give Monte a win and to claim The Full Monte Cup, which will now be played on an annual basis.
