Public encouraged to enter competition to name Space mission

The European Space Agency is asking people to choose a name for British astronaut Tim Peake’s next mission. Citizens and residents of all the Agency’s member nations are eligible to enter. The winning entry needs to be short and snappy, will be the official mission name and will be incorporated into the logo. Major Peake is due to go to the International Space Station towards the end of 2015 and spend six months there carrying out scientific experiments. It is customary for the public to help choose mission names every time a European astronaut goes into orbit. Names that reflect an astronaut’s nationality are encouraged, but they should also have a wider European flavour, and be easy to pronounce. Previous mission names have included “Marco Polo” for the Italian Astronaut Roberto Vittori, “Odissia” for Belgian Frank de Winne, and “DELTA Mission” for Dutch astronaut

Andre Kuipers’ flight to the ISS. (DELTA was an acronym for “Dutch Expedition for Life Science, Technology and Atmospheric Research”). The aim of the competition, according to Rosita Suenson of the European Space Agency, is to engage the public. “We want people to feel part of Tim’s mission,” she said. A successful mission name, according to Ms Suenson, must be short, as it has to be incorporated into the mission logo, one or two words or an acronym. Proper names and those that might be subject to copyright are not acceptable. “It should be a name that is easy to pronounce in other European languages,” explains Ms Suenson. “And it should be one that we can own in Europe.” Once the unacceaptable names are discarded, a team of linguists checks the remaining options to ensure that seemingly innocuous entries are not inadvertently rude in another European language. A short-list is then passed on to Major Peake, who makes the final choice. Ms Suenson suggests that entrants should consider a name that embodies the man, his mission aims and his interests. An early favourite is “Beagle 3” - a successor to “Beagle 2”, which was the name of the UK’s inspirational, but ultimately unsuccessful, attempt to put a probe on the surface of Mars. Another suggestion is “Starman”, inspired by the song of that name by David Bowie. In the UK, Tim Peake is often referred to simply as Major Tim, which references a character from another Bowie hit- “Space Oddity”. A name that would celebrate UK science and reflect the microgravity experiments that Tim will be conducting on the ISS might be “Newton”. If you feel you have a suitable name, and wish your entry to be considered, then go to bbc news science and environment, and fill out the on-line suggestion form.

UKIP’s Nigel Farage denies allegations of an affair

Nigel Farage had been accused in the European Parliament of having an affair with a Ukip spin doctor. Party spokeswoman Annabelle Fuller hit out at “false” allegations that she had an affair with Farage. She complained of being “hounded” after an MEP challenged Farage on the rumours in the European Parliament. Nikki Sinclaire, who left the party after a row with Farage, said during a plenary session “With unemployment still a problem across Europe and indeed across the UK, does Mr Farage think it is a fair use of taxpayers’ money, namely his secretarial allowance, not only to employ his wife Kirsten but his former mistress Annabelle Fuller? Is this a responsible use of taxpayers’ money, Mr Farage?” Farage responded: “I don’t want to answer that at all, thank you.” Fuller worked for Ukip for many years before leaving for a stint as a public relations consultant, and has now returned as a spin doctor for the party. Farage is understood to have denied allegations of an affair with Fuller in the past. A Ukip spokesman said: “The comments by Sinclaire are beneath contempt, and that person has abused parliamentary privilege to do so. “Sinclaire has been saying the same thing to anyone who would listen since 2006. Regarding Miss Fuller, Mr Farage has been asked about this before and the answer has always been No, it is absolute rubbish.”

Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370:

J. Galvez Renero S.L.

New radar evidence suggests missing plane may have been hijacked

The plane’s last location was fixed at 1.31am on Saturday. At that point it was heading north-east across the mouth of the Gulf of Thailand on what should have been a six-hour flight to Beijing. The Malaysian military said dots on secondary radar – still not confirmed as Flight MH370 – showed something heading west around 45 minutes later. Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak has said that investigators believe the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight MH370 communications were deliberately disabled, that it turned back from its flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing and flew for more than seven hours. Mr Najib said that authorities are now trying to trace the plane missing for more than a week across two possible “corridors” - a northern corridor from northern Thailand through to the border of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, and a southern corridor from Indonesia to the southern Indian Ocean. The announcement confirms days of mounting speculation that the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 a week ago with 239 people on board was not accidental, and that it was intentionally diverted or hijacked, by either a member of the crew or a passenger. The investigation will now focus on who may have taken control of the plane and why, and the search area vastly expanded. Mr Najib said that searching in the South China Sea, where the plane first lost contact with air traffic control-

lers, would be ended. He said the new search corridors were based on the latest available satellite data.

“Clearly the search for MH370 has entered a new phase,” he said. “We hope this new information brings us one step closer to finding the plane.” The Andaman and Nicobar islands and the area around them were increasingly the focus of search efforts, as reports said officials were re-examining the possibility that foul play was responsible for the plane’s disappearance. Inmarsat, the London-based communications company, confirmed that its satellites covering the region received “ping” signals from the Boeing 777 after it vanished from civilian radar and stopped communicating with the ground shortly after the plane took off in the early hours of 8 March. The “ping” signals, sent from satellites if the aircraft has not been in contact for some time, were sent out hourly, providing information about the speed at which the plane was travelling and its altitude, which could help determine the plane’s location. Such communication between the aircraft and satellites is possible only when the plane is airborne. It is understood ‘pings’ were received for as much as five hours after the plane vanished.

Despite the vast international search operation, officials in Kuala Lumpur said yesterday that there was still no trace of the Boeing 777

save it. The work started over the weekend by using a dumper truck and a team of volunteers. Llanfyllin Mayor, Ann Williams said ‘The work done to cover the roots during the weekend at the start of Operation Lonely Tree was a terrific success with nearly 30 tonnes of soil delivered to protect the tree. The soil had to be delivered to the site by a tracked vehicle, due to the nature of the terrain, and was spread around the roots by a team of volunteers; we will have to wait and see if the roots regenerate.’ It was not feasible to try to re-instate the tree in an upright position, as its trunk had been split during the fall, but it is hoped that it may show a ‘phoenix’ reaction - where the tree is regenerated through saplings that grow vertically from the original trunk, even though that trunk remains prone. The town council has also launched an appeal fund for the tree. It aims to use the donations to protect the tree from hungry sheep nibbling at it by erecting a fence around it. A plaque is to be put at the site, and already donations have been received from all over the world to help the restoration efforts.

Fight to save the ‘Lonely Tree’

Llanfyllin residents have launched an appeal to save the Lonely Tree, which stood on Green Hall Hill near Llanfyllin, Powys, until it was brought down by the high winds that rampaged through mid Wales during February. The Scots pine, thought to be around 150 years old, was such a well known landmark in the area that it is used as part of the logo for the town council’s website. According to local tradition, anyone planning to walk up Green Hall Hill should give the tree a hug, and they will be rewarded with good luck. Peter Lewis, town and county councillor, and whose family own the land upon which the tree stood, said ‘The tree is important to many people and is a historical part of Llanfyllin and the Cain valley so we have to try and save it.’ The town council consulted tree expert Rob McBride, who is a campaigner for the protection of veteran, heritage and ancient trees. He said “There is a definite possibility of saving the tree because here seems to be at least one large root still connected to it. I have seen other trees that have been blown over survive including a redwood near Welshpool, which survived through a process called ‘phoenixing’, and which now has three vertical stems growing from the original tree.” He advised that covering the tree’s roots in soil could preserve - and potentially

CULTURAL HERITAGE AGREEMENT

Officers from Torrevieja Town Hall, will, on the occasion of the 60th. anniversary of the Habaneras Contest, sign an agreement, along with the Cervantes Institute, to collaborate in promoting the cultural heritage if the City of Torrevieja. The agreement is being set up principally, to promote the linguistic, educational and cultural tourism in the city. It will act as a focus for attracting enquires from other countries, bringing an emphasis on the heritage of Torrevieja, within the wider setting of the culture of Spain, especially of the International Contest of Habaneras. Lord Mayor, Eduardo Dolon, has offered his personal involvement in the project, which originates from the office of Minister for Foreign Affairs for Spain, Jose’ Manuel Garcia Margallo, and the Secretary for State for Europe, Inigo Mendez de Vigo, along with his deputy, Eva Ortiz. Putting aside the “Town Hall Speak” in the press communique’, The project now being undertaken, is to “Sell Torrevieja” to a worldwide audience, and about time too. Let’s wish it success.

AN ENVIRONMENT DISASTER OR COMMON SENSE If you thought it might have gone away, I’m afraid not. It was over 12 months ago, that the Port Authority In Cartagena again raised the notion of building a mega port in the area of El Gorguel, which is located between Escombreras and the small village of Portman. I recall at the time, mentioning that this proposal, costing some 1,000 million euro, would require the blasting of a twin track rail tunnel through the Punta Escucha headland. The port, when up and running, would employ some 3,000 workers, servicing some three million freight containers a year. The clean up of Portman Bay, is, at long last, underway, with interest again being expressed in housing around the harbour area. This terminal, should it be built, would not be the most pleasant view, from the new Portman homes, or from the sundeck of cabin cruisers, moored along it’s new jetty. In defence of the project, Cartagena Port Authority boss, Sr. Angel Viudes, when looking at the environment concerns, is reported to have commented “ If a few dolphins are upset about more ships coming past, then they should go somewhere else” Oh dear! The ecologists will continue to try to stop this terminal, the Port Authority will continue to push it forward. So, again, is it sensible to offer work to 3,000 people in this corner of Spain? Of course it is. Is it sensible to preserve this beautiful coastline? Of course it is. Where we go from here, is anyone’s call.

LEFT HAND DOWN A BIT MR PHILLIPS

Thursday March 6th., saw the Genco Ocean nudge her way away from the safety of the salt dock in Torrevieja harbour, with a little assistance from a powerful tug, and the steady hand of the harbour pilot. The Genco Ocean was built by the Tongyoung Shipyard in South Korea, in 2010. She is 183 meters in length, has a width of 30 meters, a height of 14 meters, and a draught of 9 meters. The Genco weighs some 23,456 tonnes. Her destination is the Port of Bejaja, on the Algerian coast, reaching harbour in the early hours of March 17th.. We wish her calm seas.

The ongoing trial of Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, who is accused of shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, has heard of mistakes and mismanagement by the police. The defence claimed that evidence had been tampered with, police accounts of the investigation were untrue, and that evidence had gone missing or been contaminated. The allegations hinge around: the gun Pistorius admits using under the belief that he was shooting at a burglar, was handled by a police ballistics expert who was not wearing gloves. Defense attorney Barry Roux questioned the reliability of forensic photographs of the scene. In particular the images of a second iPhone found in Pistorius’ bathroom, which Roux accused the forensic team of moving before photographing it. This could not be repudiated by the prosecution, as the camera was incorrectly date programmed. There are two police officers who claim to have been first on the scene,

and whose evidence does not tally. Hilton Botha, the original lead investigating officer on the case, was removed and replaced days after he crumbled under Roux’s crossexamination during Pistorius’ bail hearing in February last year, but admits having ‘run onto the scene’ without foot protection, and so may have contaminated the evidence. Colonel Schoombie van Rensburg, giving evidence for the prosecution, admitted, after having to correct his statement several times, “I didn’t focus on the nitty gritty. There may be small things … and bigger things … that I didn’t notice.” Amongst the collection of forensic photographs are several shots of Pistorius’ expensive watch collection – nine, including some Armani pieces, and another worth up to $10,000 – eight of which were kept in a glass display box. Roux says two of the watches went missing after police arrived. Van Rensburg, in his testimony, repeatedly spoke about how he asked the forensic team to take care of the watches, “because I could see they were expensive and I thought they might be tempting for someone,” but in the hours after the shooting, he admitted one of them disappeared. He says they body searched all personnel, bags and vehicles, but could not find the watch, and opened a case of theft. All the other watches have since been returned to Pistorius, van Rensburg said. Court officials have confirmed that evidence in the trial will continue to be presented until the court goes into recess on April 4 – an extension of two weeks – unless both sides complete witness 152 testimony before then.

Tony Benn dies aged 88

Former cabinet minister and veteran leftwing campaigner Tony Benn died peacefully early on the morning of 14 March at his home in west London surrounded by his children Stephen, Hilary, Melissa and Joshua. ‘We will miss above all his love which has sustained us throughout our lives,’ the family said. ‘But we are comforted by the memory of his long, full and inspiring life and so proud of his devotion to helping others as he sought to change the world for the better.’ The 88-year-old former Labour MP had been seriously ill. Instantly recognisable with his trademark pipe and cup of tea, he aroused great emotions equally among those who shared and who did not share his opinions. Mr Benn became an MP in November 1950 and served in the cabinet under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. A major figure on the left of the party, he narrowly missed out on the deputy leadership in 1981 and was a popular public speaker, anti-war campaigner and political diarist. Aged just 25 when he first entered Parliament, Mr Benn subsequently renounced his peerage, which he inherited on his father’s death, to remain in the House of Commons. To achieve this he rewrote the Constitution by securing Britain’s first referendum and refusing to become the 2nd Viscount Stansgate. He served as an MP for more than 50 years, becoming Labour’s longest-serving MP - almost 50 years. He won 16 of the 17 elections he fought, served in three Cabinets, becoming secretary

of state for industry in 1974 under Harold Wilson and going on to become secretary of state for energy, keeping his post when James Callaghan became PM in 1976. But after the Labour government was ousted in 1979, he staged a bitterly divisive battle as the champion of the left with Denis Healey for the deputy leadership of the party. He retired from Parliament in 2001, famously saying ‘Having served for nearly half a century in the House of Commons, I now want more time to devote to politics and more freedom to do so. Tributes Labour leader Ed Miliband described him as ‘an iconic figure of our age’. “He will be remembered as a champion of the powerless, a great parliamentarian and a conviction politician,” he said. “Tony Benn spoke his mind and spoke up for his values. Whether you agreed with him or disagreed with him, everyone knew where he stood and what he stood for.” In a recent interview for Radio 4’s Today programme, presenter James Naughtie asked Mr Benn to summarise where he had been “most right” and “most wrong” in his career. “I made every mistake in the book,” Mr Benn replied. “But making mistakes is how you learn. “I would be ashamed if I ever said anything I didn’t believe in, to get on personally. “You look back and, when you’re in a critical mood, you see you made errors of judgement. But as long as you say what you believe and believe what you say that’s the test of authenticity.” Source: BBC History

Colourful geometric patio Geometric patterns take all forms in this modern garden patio. A delicate palette of Eastern ceramics brings a lighter touch to ancient motifs and luxurious velvet curtains in deep shades of blue, red and green.

Contemporary decked garden An abundance of fluttering steel windmills amid verdant ferns creates a minimal flower garden. The background works two big trends - grey and geometric - and gives the green and silver an almost magical glow

FRIENDSHIP CENTRE 10th ANNIVERSARY On Monday 10th March, HELP Vega Baja’s Friendship Centre, celebrated its 10th Anniversary with a party in the meeting and tea-room of the Church La Parroquia Cristo, in La Regia. The group was originally set-up to support housebound and isolated English speaking people, by giving them a few

hours respite and companionship, in a caring and loving environment. Those present felt very honoured to have Paul Rodwell the British Consul take the time in his very busy schedule, to attend the event. Trish Felvus the Organiser for the HELP Friendship Centre and Ron Perrin HELP’s President, welcomed Paul Rodwell; who gave a short speech on behalf of the British Consulate, praising the assistance and encouraging such activities and support for expats, from associations such as this. The guests’ usual table games and conversations continued after the speech, whilst Paul Rodwell was introduced to some of the volunteers. This was followed by an enormous feast that was enjoyed by all and had been kindly prepared by the volunteers who support the group. The Parish Priest, Don Joaquin Carlos Carlos, then gave Paul Rodwell a guided tour of his new church, after which Paul Rodwell had to take his leave. After the raffle draw, to raise funds towards the groups autumn coach excursion, guests departed with more party treats and the knowledge that they have the support of people who care for them. If you know someone who is unable to get out and about, is lonely or, if you know a carer who needs a few hours on their own, tell them about the Centre. It could be the answer to their prayers! WHY NOT COME ALONG to “the Help Friendship Centre”. We meet most Monday afternoons between 2pm and 5pm at the Church La Parroquia Cristo in La Regia. For more details call our San Miguel office on 966 723 733, Monday to Fridays between 10:00 and 13:30.

OF COURSE market stalls vary widely in terms of quality and service and it’s true to say that they are more commonly associated with ‘cheap and cheerful’ goods rather than high end quality. However, some stalls really are a treasure trove of opportunity. ONE SUCH stall is ‘Shani’s Lingerie’, based in Zoco and Playa Flamenca Markets, trading in the Costa Blanca for eight years, offering high quality branded goods such as Marks & Spencers, Naturana, Evans, Ballet and other high-end brand name products for a fraction of the price you would pay in the UK. Goods are all imported direct from the UK and Germany. In addition a quality service is offered – so often lacking here in Spain. These include a Bra fitting service and goods exchange policy if the size is not right or you find you just would prefer another style. Costs are kept down by trading in a market stall environment rather than a shop, with savings passed on to the customers. At prices less than half that of the UK, all Naturana bras are 12€ or less and M&S Bras

Top tips for looking gorgeous in glasses

Glasses are a great accessory and even those people who don’t need to improve their vision are incorporating glasses into their fashion toolbox. The key is to select the style carefully to flatter your face, colouring and style. Specsavers Opticas have put together the following advice to help you look your best in glasses. Consider your face shape Different style glasses will suit different face shapes, so make sure you know your face shape before you shop and choose your styles accordingly. Here’s a rundown of face shapes and the best styles for each: • Oval - Be adventurous as this shaped face suits almost all frame shapes. • Rectangle - Consider a wide frame with a strong top line. Avoid small square shapes and try a frame style with all-over colour • Round - Consider angular or geometric styles as they draw attention to the top half of the face. You should avoid oval or round shaped frames • Square – Consider oval frames as they soften the jaw line. Avoid angular frames as these will emphasise the angular facial features. Take into account your colouring - There are so many colours and

materials to choose from that it can be hard to know where to start. By choosing colours that match your hair colour and skin type, you can find the glasses which complement you perfectly. •D ark brown - Try metal frames in antique silver or gold colours, as well as softer browns. Avoid pastels or very dark colours and heavy styles.

•B lack - Try any of the metallic frames, especially simple shapes and colours. Avoid bright colours unless you want to make a strong impact. •B londe - Try lightweight styles with delicate colour effects. Experiment with colours that add warmth to your skin tone. Avoid dark, heavy styles, cold colours such as blues and greens, and light-coloured metals. If you blush easily, avoid pinks and amber. •D ark grey - Try lighter coloured metal or plastic frames. Avoid heavy dark frames. Specsavers Opticas’ staff can help you choose the right frame, colour and style to suit you. For more information or to find your nearest store visit www. specsavers.es

braben’s blog...

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Having gone half blind studying up on BITCOINS in this darkened room from staring at the screen like some hooded Occultist staring into his dark crystal mirror, I am ready to complete the article on these illusive digital units of produce interchange. Last time we talked about what they were, how thy were organised and how a digital ledger was managed and the security involved. Today we have understand the concept of mining which is the way that new coinage is introduced into the “economy”. Because Bitcoins are a CryptoCurrency, that is a digital currency that uses Cryptographic techniques (Cryptography is the mathematics involved in concealing information from unwanted attention) to control the creation and transfer of this digital money. So how does the currency get moved about? Essentially, the information is stored in a public database that holds a sequential record of all transactions (called a ledger after its paper counterpart) that goes back to the beginning (just like a real ledger). This process is called a Block Chain. The only information that is stored is your Bitcoin account number. Every piece of data is encrypted, the process has encryption built in to prevent someone intercepting your currency transfer and redirecting it into their own account. The down side is that many exchanges throughout the world are, by law, forced to give this information to their tax authorities. The tax man must have a slice (may they all be cursed)! Those who maintain the block chain are called miners and are rewarded with newly created bitcoins as well as transaction

fees. Payment processing work done by miners verifies each transaction as valid and adds it to the block chain. As of 2014 payment processing is rewarded with 25 newly created bitcoins per block. To claim the reward, the miner includes in the block a special transaction called the “coinbase” that assigns the reward bitcoins to an address of the miner’s choosing. All bitcoins in circulation can be traced back to such coinbase transactions. The block reward will be halved to 12.5 bitcoins in 2017 and again approximately every four years thereafter. By 2014 estimates there will be 21 million bitcoins in existence in 2140, and transaction processing will only be rewarded by the transaction fees. Transactions that pay a fee may be processed more quickly than those that don’t. The most efficient mining hardware makes use of custom designed application-specific integrated circuits, which are much faster mining and have low power consumption compared to general purpose microprocessors, such as x86 processors. If all of this sounds like a waking nightmare, then don’t worry, your not alone. I have studied this subject for 2 weeks and still can’t quite get my head around the ideas and concepts. For those that have then remember this cautionary tale: Do you remember the man from the newspaper who through out his old computer and what was £4.5 million in bitcoins, currently buried under 15-30 feet of soil in some refuse tip! So Keep your money safe and yourselves healthy until next week. You know how to get hold of me for free advice. Enjoy this better weather and we will cover something else next time.

Time and Motion So I am the only person standing at the bar waiting to be served a pint; the barmaid asks me to wait; disappears off for a while and comes back with some ice. Then she pours me a pint leaving me wondering why not serve the beer first, then go and get the ice that nobody is waiting for. Same bar – later I ask for another drink and as the barman is busy he offers to bring it over to my table, so I try and pay first, meaning he can then deliver my pint and leave. Instead his preferred way is to serve my drink at the table and ask for the money then, I hand him a note, he returns to the bar, rings it into the till and returns with my change. Other customers are standing, waiting to be served. Two trips when one would do, he does this all night as he is on his own and it takes ages to get served. The good old Time and Motion people would have a field day. Years ago when training in wine retail management I was seconded to an off licence in Cambridge which had the highest footfall in East Anglia. It was close to Kings College, a tiny shop the size of a bedroom with storage down a rickety staircase to the cellar. It

A Short Piece!

A thought just popped into my head the other day and goodness knows where it came from. Does that ever happen to you? There you are, empty headedly going about your daily business when, wham, a whimsical notion hits you and you can’t shake it off. It’s a little like waking up at 3 am with the theme tune from Match of the Day marauding though your unconscious! I wouldn’t want you to think that I wander around every day without a thought in my head. Occasionally, on an exceptional day, I have as many as four or five. But every now and then, something just takes over and I have to give that sudden fancy my full attention. It’s not usually anything earnest-last week it was, fleetingly, celery. I don’t know why either, but it soon passed. And usually it isn’t anything of great importance, you know, nothing along the lines of, trying to understand why you can eat shed loads of Milky Ways before a meal and still be hungry. Having said that, this is something I do plan to investigate fully at some time in the future. As you can see, I usually succeed in ignoring whatever pops into my head, but not this time. No this time the aforementioned uncalled for deliberation just grew and grew until I knew I had to look into it. I’m going to share it with you but, I do apologise in advance if you too are then set forth on a helter skelter of ponderings, in a quest to better know this rather weighty subject. Garden gnomes! Now I haven’t fully got to the bottom of why, but garden gnomes first originated in Germany. Having said that, Italy also has a claim to be the first, but I doubt that is going to trouble the UN at any time soon. But what I wondered was, why they became so popular with everyone. At least I thought it was everyone until I discovered that the Chelsea Flower Show gang don’t like gnomes at all! Until last year, they were Graham is married banned from their event. Gnomes to Helen and has a and upmarket gardens didn’t go daughter, Alice. He together apparently. They could learn lives part of the year a thing or two from another London near Albox, but works Premier League team-Tottenham in Qatar, teaching. If Hotspur, they sell gnomes dressed in you wish to contact the Spurs kit! Graham regarding This needs further time-have you this article email: got an hour or two right now? was the shop of choice for every city centre smoker as it was the only fag shop around. I can’t remember the managers’ name but he planted two pearls of wisdom in my little brain which I share now. One – the Mars Bar Theory! The impulse purchase. Right next to the till would be a display of Mars Bars or something similar. Customers couldn’t resist and would pick one up and give us 50p for it, Ka–ching! Hundreds of extra 50ps went in the till each week, meaning wider waists in Cambridge and fatter profits for the shop. Two – Don’t Come Up Empty Handed! As staff were often moving deliveries down the rickety stairs the manager had a sign at the bottom of the stairs saying ‘don’t come up empty handed!’ In other words make each journey count! The shop was so tiny it constantly needed replenishing. Cartons of cigarettes (and Mars Bars) were brought up on the return trip. We were also the shop of choice for all the city centre winos and so carrying up twin 2L packs of White Diamond industrial strength so called Cider gave us all

arms like Popeye. Security on the cigs was high as the profit margins are so small even losing one packet of cigarettes will wipe out the profit made on the next 20 packs sold. Now in the UK a packet of Lambert & Butlers retails at £7.19 and HM Customs and Excise pocket £5.77 leaving just £1.42 for the growers, manufacturers, warehousing, logistics and marketing; the shopkeeper makes just 37p of this. Smokers get a bad press I know and I am no exception! I welcomed the indoors smoking ban not only for my asthma but I just can’t abide the smell of smoke. A typical exsmoker. May 18th 1994 I gave up – not that I am counting. It’s an easy date to remember as I was the stressed out Deputy Catering Manager at West Ham United F C and it was the final day of the Premier League football season. My smoking habit was getting out of hand as I would smoke not one but 2 cigs in quick succession when a break could be nabbed behind the newly opened Bobby Moore Stand. Nearly 20 years ago I vowed to give up after the last match and did!

Pole Dancing for Geeks

News

German company Tobit.Software is behind the robotic dancers Tess and Lexy which are on show at the CEBIT expo in Hanover.

The pair are joined on stage by their robotic DJ counterpart, who plays beats through a megaphone positioned where his head should be. British artist Giles Walker designed the robots which use the same 12V motors that power car windscreen wipers and can be controlled via a PC or Android smartphone. According to the BBC, the company says people who want to hire Tess or Lexy will need to have about £2,500 to spare.

Spanish taxes for non-resident property owners

We have said it before and we will say it again: All non-resident owners of property in Spain are required by law to submit a non-residents’ tax return each year whether or not they let out their property. Tax relating to 2012 should have been paid by the end of last year and tax relating to 2013 can be paid at any time during 2014.

Your tax liability is calculated by reference to the cadastral value of your property. The cadastral value (“valor catastral”) is equivalent to the UK rateable value. The total cadastral value (“valor catastral total”) for the year in question is the figure needed. This is made up of two components: the land value (“valor catastral suelo”) and the property value (“valor catastral construccion”). It does not relate directly to the purchase price or market value of your property. The cadastral value will be shown on your council tax bill (IBI/suma/rates) normally as “valor catastral/base imponible”. If these documents are not to hand, your local Town Hall will be able to help.

Why do I need to submit a tax return? Spanish law requires that, if own property in Spain, you must submit an income tax return for the previous tax (calendar) year. You must pay some tax - even if you do not let out the property or receive any income from it.

What happens if I do nothing?

If you do nothing, you are breaking the law. It is possible, of course, that you could get away with it for a time. However the Spanish authorities retain records of all properties in Spain and will investigate cases where no returns are filed for an individual property. The authorities have various powers of prosecution and enforcement, including fines and the freezing of bank accounts. In addition, the historical records are checked when you seek to sell your property. It means that you will not be able to claim back 3% of your sale proceeds from the Spanish authorities. Although 2013 tax is currently due, it is also possible to pay previous years’ unpaid taxes now to avoid enforcement action.

LEGAL CORNER

WITH MICHAEL DAVIES, ABOGADO/SOLICITOR If you wish us to print an article about a particular topic, please e-mail info@daviessolicitors.com

TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR WILL TO MAKE SURE IT COMPLIES WITH NEW EUROPEAN DIRECTIVE.

Q. Please clarify what the consequences are of the European directive 650/2012 that you mentioned in the last issue and what we should do about it? A. Under this new directive unless in your Spanish will you have stated expressly that you wish your national law to rule your inheritance your inheritance will be ruled by the law of your country of residence. (the problem is that in Spain there is a system of obligatory heirs which would not permit you to leave your estate to your spouse if you have children). The solution is to look at your will and made sure you have expressly mentioned that you wish national law to rule your inheritance. If you have not you will need to make a new will. The good thing is that because of how important this issue is, this new rule imposed by the European law will only be applicable from August of 2015 allowing plenty of time for people to change their wills. NON RESIDENT HIPOTHETICAL INCOME TAX. Q. We have just received a letter from the tax office stating that we owe them non-resident tax. We are non-residents and pay all our services and rates so do

not understand what this is all about. A. We have written about this before. Every year non- residents have an obligation of filing a non-resident hypothetical income tax return. If you have not done so you will need to put this in order. The good thing is that they cannot claim more than four years of back payments. We recommend speaking to your solicitor. INHERITANCE TAX: VALUE OF A PROPERTY WITH A MORTGAGE. Q. I have a property in Mojacar with a mortgage on it. I am trying to calculate the inheritance that would be due by my wife If I deceased. Will she pay tax on the value of the house, or the value of the house reduced by the value of the mortgage. A. You only pay tax on the equity. On death the bank issues a certificate for probate stating the money owed by you to the bank on the day of death, and this amount is used to reduce the taxable base on which the inheritance tax is calculated.

Regulator to start sending “spies” to check up on banks

Stock market watchdog CNMV is planning to send undercover inspectors posing as customers to bank branches across Spain as part of a new effort to ensure that financial institutions are complying with regulations when they offer their products to customers. CNMV chief Elvira Rodríguez explained that the plan, which she proposed at the end of 2013, will be put into action this year. She made the announcement on Wednesday at a presentation of the regulator’s goals for the coming year. The findings by these “spies” will serve as “evidence” to be used in disciplinary action against financial institutions caught violating regulations, she explained. However, it remains unclear how the system will actually be put into place given that changes to the Securities Exchange Law must be made to define the legality of the work conducted by these inspectors. Because of the CNMV’s lack of resources, Rodríguez said that the inspectors could be hired from outside the agency but under the supervision of her office. This type of strategy is known as “mystery shopping,” and is already widely used in France, Britain, Belgium and the Netherlands. The strategies behind and legality of these inspections vary from country to country, although in most cases subsequent investigations are not carried out and usually serve as quality-control checks. In Britain, for example, mystery shopping at financial institutions has been in place since 2006, and FSA banking supervisor is allowed to record conversations between “customers” and bank

employees. But this only happens in extreme cases, and the decision to open up an investigation is not solely based on the evidence gathered through this practice. In France Autorité de Marchés Financiers holds about 110 inspections, done in three stages annually. The goal is not to issue sanctions but instead to learn how banks are selling their products. Besides the inspections, the CNMV president said that the regulator is also working on a classification system designed to alert customers to the risks of certain financial products offered on the market, to help them make better decisions about their investments. Between 2007 and 2011, thousands of Spaniards lost their savings after they invested in risky preferential shares sold by savings banks, such as Caja Madrid and Banco CAM, which were keen to raise capital during the financial crisis. Many customers who have filed criminal complaints and lawsuits said they were not told of the risks. But bank executives insist they were adequately informed about the liabilities involved. Rodríguez also said that one of the goals of the CNMV was to lobby for changes to the existing law that would give the stock market watchdog more autonomy and supervisory capability. She also announced that the CNMV has received petitions from five companies this year for listings on the Spanish stock market. One of these is a foreign company that will use the Spanish stock market for trading. Souce: wwww.elpais.com

Tony Benn dies aged 88

Former cabinet minister and veteran left-wing campaigner Tony Benn died peacefully early on the morning of 14 March at his home in west London surrounded by his children Stephen, Hilary, Melissa and Joshua. He served as an MP for more than 50 years, becoming Labour’s longestserving MP - almost 50 years. He won 16 of the 17 elections he fought, served in three Cabinets, becoming secretary of state for industry in 1974 under Harold Wilson and going on to become secretary of state for energy, keeping his post when James Callaghan became PM in 1976. Tributes

Labour leader Ed Miliband described him as ‘an iconic figure of our age’.

SOLTIMES MARCH 2014

www.soltimes.com With retirement savings dwindling, more and more of us are wondering if we’ll be able to retire as planned. Many baby boomers, especially, will have to keep working long past traditional retirement age just to make up for the beating their retirement plans have taken in recent years. Or maybe not... It’s quite possible that you can still retire as planned…and maybe even retire earlier than expected. How? By retiring overseas... A foreign retirement isn’t for everyone, of course. Family obligations may be an issue for some people. Others might not be comfortable in a place where they don’t speak the language. But if you’re the adventuresome type…or if you’ve dreamed of living in an exotic location–maybe on a sultry tropical beach, in a pristine mountain hideaway, or in a sophisticated, culturally rich city–with better weather and a lower cost of living, retirement overseas may be for you. If you dream of moving overseas, you probably look forward to a low-stress, affordable lifestyle. It’s likely to be a healthier lifestyle, too. Here are some reasons why....

Warm climate

Most of us dream of retiring someplace warm. Snow and cold are things we gladly leave behind with our old 9-to-5 lives. And when the weather is warm and sunny, it’s easy to spend more time outside in the fresh air. Before you know it, you may ease into an active lifestyle with lots of exercise…which health experts agree is key to keeping us looking and feeling young. Some expats actually choose an overseas destination because they can practice a favorite

sport there, such as golf, hiking or fishing. Others take up a new activity once they move. If you’re near the sea, for instance, swimming or strolling the beach may become part of your new routine. If you live in a city, you may soon be walking to shops and markets, or just exploring your new home town on foot. When adventure or fresh discoveries lie around every corner, long walks don’t feel like exercise.

Healthy eats

With a warm climate comes a long growing season for fruits and vegetables. Expats often praise the quality and freshness of the produce they can buy locally. You can choose to eat junk food if you want. But fresh, exotic produce can tempt you to eat more healthily. If you do, your health—not to mention your taste buds—will thank you. Of course, in warm weather it’s also tempting to lie by the pool and just do nothing. That’s okay, too—it lowers all that unhealthy stress.

Social life

Fresh air and sunshine can also help you make friends. (Health experts say that social networking helps us live longer, too.) Ever stayed home from a social event because you couldn’t face a cold, wet night out? In your new warm-weather home, you’re more likely to ask, “Where’s the party?” and enjoy the evening stroll there and back.

On Thursday 6th March, APAH held its Vicars & Tarts Ball at The New Tavern in San Miguel de Salinas. Thanks to a fantastic evenings entertainment by ‘Woody’, the night was a huge success. There were more ‘tarts’ in residence than you would hope to see in a bakery window, and every colour wig you could think of! There was even a nun and a bishop amongst the visiting vicars.

First prize in the Raffle was a large food hamper, which was won by a resident of San Miguel, who visited the APAH Charity Shop the day after, with a lovely thank you card, which said that the winner of the hamper had very generously donated the contents of the hamper to the local food bank. What a lovely gesture, and it proves that one charitable act can lead to another. The total amount raised by the fund-

raising event was over 590 euros. A fantastic amount, and APAH would like to thank not only Woody for generously offering to give up his evening for a worthwhile cause, and the owner and staff at The New Tavern for offering to hold the event there, but also all the people who came along and thoroughly enjoyed themselves, whilst helping to make a difference to the lives of the animals in APAH’s care.

How to Stop Puppy Chewing

A pack leader is not a chew toy, so what the puppy chewing problem tells me is that you are not the puppy’s pack leader; you are a friend. You need to adopt the concept, “body, mind, and then heart.” Right now, it appears you are embracing “heart, body, and then mind.” If you are willing to make that switch, your puppy will stop seeing you as a chew toy.

Is your husband experiencing the same puppy chewing problems? If not, perhaps he has already established himself as the puppy’s pack leader. Often, a husband and wife do not get along with the dog in the same way. Sometimes it is necessary to have a third person come in and suggest a strategy that will work for both of you.

I’d like for you to pay attention to the energy you are sharing with your puppy. A lot of people start off the day with affection first. When dogs get excited, they can get mouthy. When you get up in the morning, are you greeting Mother Nature with excited energy or are you establishing your leadership by sharing calmassertive energy? You should only share affection after dog exercise and discipline.

Add some structure – rules, boundaries, limitations – and that will make you the authority figure in the puppy’s life. Once you become pack leader, you will no longer have the puppy chewing problem. Stay calm and assertive. http://www.cesarsway.com/

HORSE RESCUE DRAMA ENDS HAPPILY

The impending rescue by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre Foundation (EHCRC) of fourteen horses from what was described as a “living hell” in Callosa De Segura took a dramatic turn last Thursday. Working with El Refugio del Burrito, a donkey rescues sanctuary from Malaga, the EHCRC received a call late on Thursday afternoon which would see these unfortunate equines taken from the premises where they were kept in appalling conditions. Sue Weeding, co founder of the EHCRC explains what happened. “This tragic case has received much publicity in both the English speaking and Spanish press over the past few weeks. We were told to expect the result of the court investigation to happen at the end of March. I received a telephone call to inform me that the judge had rushed the case through the court as a matter of urgency. I was asked to attend Orihuela court at nine o’clock Friday morning with our Spanish foundation administrator Isabel to sign and seal the paperwork to allow us to get the fourteen horses out of these premises.

We and the El Refugio del Burrito people were then instructed to go to the Guardia Civil police station in Orihuela at eleven thirty. I met with my husband Rod, Hassan our stable manager and Dorothea our equine vet. From there we were escorted to the horse dealers’ premises by six Guardia Civil officers where we were met by crews from Spanish television and Spanish press reporters along with a crowd of onlookers.” Sue continued,” We were taken aback at the amount of interest that this case had generated. The owner of the premises was not happy that his horses were being taken from him and he and his family were guarding the entrance armed with sticks. The Guardia Civil officers were wonderful and with great diplomacy and tact they calmed what was an explosive situation down, to allow only Hassan and Dorothea to enter and check the horse’s condition and suitability to travel. We had to wait outside and endure what was a tense atmosphere at the entrance. Eventually after what seemed ages

the permission was given to move into place the large horse box truck to take half the horses to our sanctuary in Rojales. Unfortunately the driver had exceeded his permitted driving hours so we had to hire another truck from Alicante to come and collect the remaining horses. We eventually finished work at the centre at one o’clock Saturday morning, a sixteen hour rescue which involved us also having to build an extra secure paddock at very short notice.” The horses have now settled into their new surroundings reasonably well and will remain in the custody of Sue and Rod pending further legal procedures. Of the fourteen horses, four are stallions which will be castrated soon, one is a gelding and the remainder are mares which will be checked by Dorothea to see if any are with foal and to determine their general health and condition. It appears that some of the more mature mares were ridden regularly at some time by their previous owners before arriving at the dealers’ yard to await their fate. Sue continues,” The mares are very affectionate, gentle and receptive to touch and were probably sold on because of the financial crisis affecting Spain or some other similar circumstances. They are certainly enjoying their freedom here with us at the EHCRC in a spacious open air environment. Owners should think very carefully before selling their older redundant equines because they can be sold on and end up in undesirable places with poor conditions and no care and end there remaining days in misery, after a previous life of loving and careful attention. One of our major

tasks now is education, educating the younger generation is key to the future of animal welfare in Spain, educating and working more closely with other owners both Spanish and other nationalities to ensure that they treat the horses, donkeys and ponies in their care with love and respect.” The EHCRC would welcome any donations or sponsorship to support the work that they are doing. If you are a bar owner or business that would like to hold a charity event to support the centre please get in touch with Sue Weeding on 652 021 980 or email David East on pr@ easyhorsecare.net. The EHCRC will ensure that your event receives the maximum press publicity plus coverage on their Face book and website pages prior to and after the function. Every single cent donated or spent in the five charity shops operated by the EHCRC goes towards the upkeep and care of the horses, donkeys and ponies in their care. Large items such as furniture can be collected and delivered after purchase. Contact the charity shop hotline on 636 062 000. Visit the centre on Sundays between 1pm and 4pm where refreshments are available in the garden café. The first horse tour starts at 2pm where you can get close to, and meet the residents and see first hand where your money has been spent. book review “If you want to murder someone, don’t do it in England. The odds are against you getting away with it. You’ve got a much better chance in Russia.” With sales of over 250 million and titles such as Kane and Abel to the recent Clifton Chronicles the Mail on Sunday referred to him as probably the best story teller of our age. He might not have a squeaky clean image, having spent 2 years in H.M. prisons, five to be exact but he did meet some interesting and exceptional criminals who fed his imagination with enough fuel to publish his Prison Diaries and this short story selection. It’s Archer’s fifth collection containing 12 stellar tales gleaned from the inmates whilst being incarcerated. All 12 stores are firmly rooted in fact although they have been embellished and most of the names changed. The Cat O’ Nine Tales/Tails is a variation of the flogging device used in prison. Records illustrate that it was probably removed in 1948 in Great Britain but continued to be used elsewhere in the world. Archer is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction(15 times), short stories(4 times) and non-fiction(The Prison Diaries). The criminal doesn’t always get away with his crime and justice doesn’t always prevail. The Man Who Robbed His Own Post Office depicts the lives and growing relationship between Chris and Sue from their schooldays to their National Service and the RAF, the birth of their daughter and their struggles to keep afloat with the changing economy that brought redundancies and job losses. They weren’t scroungers, they didn’t sponge off the state. They were hard-working people,

25

Cat O’ Nine Tales by Jeffrey Archer. honest and helpful. They became pillars of society and were held in high esteem. They were both from happy, well-balanced backgrounds, a model family in fact, very different to the stereotypical criminal if one was allowed to stereotype without this label of political incorrectness being bandied around. The Judge expected mitigating circumstances for stealing £250,000 and falsifying 4 passports, something along the lines of Mr Haskins being thrashed by a ruthless step-father, night after night, and Mrs Haskins having been raped by an evil uncle at an impressionable age. Mr Justice Gray emphatically stated that they were not criminals so why were they arrested and sentenced to custodial terms if they were innocent? Intrigued? What was their crime? They borrowed money for their first business, paid it off within the allotted time then borrowed more to buy a Post Office with A status, a considerable investment of £250,000 representing their savings, pension, future profits. Everything. The wheel of fortune favoured them, for a time until the headquarters informed them that they were re-evaluating their property portfolios which culminated in downgrading their current investment to a B status. They were advised that the law was not on their side if they made any attempt to sue the Post Office. “We can never hope to earn back our original investment of two hundred and fifty thousand, even if we go on working for the rest of our lives.” Extremely depressing when you’ve worked hard all of your life towards your retirement

knowing that you will be poor and struggling. It was Sue’s idea to retire and recoup the money stolen by the Post Office but something went drastically wrong as you’ll discover when you read this tale. Don’t Drink The Water is a tale with a demonic twist. Karl was from St Petersburg, an interesting man as long as you kept him at arm’s length unless you wanted to toy with danger-he was a contract killer at the start of a 22 year sentence for disposing of a fellow countryman who was proving tiresome to one of the Mafia gangs back home. His speciality was cutting up his victims into small pieces and then putting these bits into an incinerator. His fee? £5,000. His story involves an English wealthy businessman called Richard Barnsley who had just completed a pipeline deal with the Minister for Energy, Anatol Chenkov. This had guaranteed the Minister $2 million a year. Who said money talks? The only currencies the Russians trade in are dollars and death. Chenkov had been a major in the KGB. No crossing swords with him. Not a man to double cross! Richard is 53 and has been married to Maureen for over 20 years. The title refers to a sensitive situation with regard to sanitation in and around St Petersburg. The tap water is polluted, probably toxic and countless numbers of Russian citizens have succumbed to this Siberian disease. A mysterious letter addressed to Maureen from a solicitor troubles Dick and when she accompanies him to Russia he is advised that she might be entitled to £30 million’s worth of his wealth. Over my dead body he might have said. A tricky situation with an enormous amount of money at stake. This tale has a Roald Dahl touch to it. Archer might have said an interesting twist in the

tale! I enjoyed It Can’t Be October Already although it is a tragic indictment to lonely, homeless people like Patrick O’Flynn who gets himself arrested every October so that he can be watered and fed in prison during the long, cold winters and be released in spring. If he is sentenced to 3 months he demands serving 6 months. He has a wonderful sense of humour and displays friendliness and courtesy you wouldn’t expect from a criminal. An afterword indicates the tragic death of this lovable man from hypothermia whilst sleeping under the arches on Victoria Embankment. Tragic. It might change your mind about prison-inmates. If not, you’ll find it an entertaining read. Publisher: Pan ISBN: 978-0-330-41883-6 REVIEW it by Carol Naylor. wwwcarolnaylor.blogspot.com/naylorcl@ hotmail.es

Ultimate Champion of Champions By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’

With Kieran Bracken and Sam Attwater being eliminated whilst I was away on holiday, I returned in time to catch up with the Grand Final crowning the Champion of Champions. This show certainly lived up to its name and was superb from start to finish. As befitting their position and standing within the Ice Dancing world Chris and Jayne opened the show with their final ever performance of Ravel´s Bolero. There was hardly a dry eye in the house following this performance and displayed yet again the standard of excellence that follows Jayne and Chris in whatever they do. Opening this show was Beth Tweddle and Lucasz and I have to say I was surprised to find her still in the show as I am not one of her fans. They performed to Who Won The World with 2 other professional couples and despite it being full of lifts and tricks there was not much skating evident. Beth did however hold her own amongst the other professional skaters. I awarded her 9.5 and the judges a maximum total of 40.0. Next out were Hayley Tamaddan and Dan performing to Perhaps with 3 boys (lucky girl!) As always Hayley always characterises her role and as she

was being passed between all 3 of the boys she was superb and full of confidence. I awarded her 10.0 and she also received a maximum 40.0. Ray Quinn and Maria then skated to ´Surfin USA´to close this first part of the show. As we have come to expect Ray made this very tricky routine appear easy despite using a surfboard on ice. I find it very difficult to believe that he was in the skate off last week!! And with his own personal 5th perfect score of 40.0 he certainly knows how to present anything he does. The 3 celebrities were then asked to skate their own personal favourite routines from the shows that they have done. Beth and Lucasz picked their Highland Fling and I`m sorry to say that again she left me cold. She may be a technically excellent skater but she leaves me wanting from her presentation. Again I awarded her 9.5 and the judges 39.5. Hayley and Dan selected their Bollywood routine to Jaiho which was absolutely fabulous. Slick, clean fast moving armography matched to perfection, this was a mesmerising performance for which she received 39.5 from the judges and another 10.0 from me. Closing the second part of the show was Ray and Maria with

their Flamenco routine. Again tracing back to his ballroom dancing days, this was superbly presented with absolute dramatic intensity and characterisation. It was a breathtaking performance and thoroughly deserved yet another maximum score of 40.0. At this point of the show the public voted and the least popular celebrity had to leave the show before the performance of the Bolero. I agreed with the public and Beth left in third place leaving Hayley and Ray to battle it out for the champion of champions title. This Bolero routine had to be choreographed by the couple performing with no help from Torville and Dean. Hayley and Dan were the first to skate and their Bolero showed the chemistry between these two to perfection. Hayley and Dan have known each other from the age of 12 and you could see the friendship and connection between them. Their performance encompassed the role as always with superb intensity. Ray and Maria then came out and within the first few bars of music they showed just why they have been so popular. The atmosphere created from the choreography made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end! It was

extremely complex throughout, but Ray perfomed it just like a professional skater and his musical interpretation was fabulous to watch. Christopher Dean actually passed a comment that he was a skaters skater - an accolade indeed for Ray. Just before the presentation was made there was a standing ovation for Jayne and Chris and not a dry eye left in the house. Such a bitter sweet moment to end what has been a superb show over the past 10 years. And lo and behold my winner from day 1 Ray Quinn was crowned the Ultimate Dancing On Ice Champion of Champions and thoroughly deserved it was!! Well all that´s left is to say cheerio for now, we´ll still be running our dance classes throughout the year and now have our own purpose built studio which we have just started using for our monthly half day workshops. These cover a variety of topics so if you would like any further information you can contact me on 635584431, 966188430 or lynatdenelledance@hotmail.com. Singles are always welcome so come and join us. Until Strictly returns to our screens in the Autummn - Keep Dancing!

Gary, who didn’t wear green, beat Barry. Larry beat the person who wore yellow. The person who wore number 3, wore green. The person who wore number 2 finished first whereas Harry came last. The person who finished second wore green, Barry wore yellow and the person wearing red beat the person wearing blue. Can you work out who finished where, the number and colour they wore?

A richly flavoured soup, spiced with curry powder. Perfect for a cold day, serve with a dollop of tangy sour cream.

Preparation method 1.Melt the butter with the oil in a large saucepan and stir in the onion, garlic, carrots, celery and sweet potato. Cook over a medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring regularly until the vegetables are beginning to soften and brown lightly. Stir in the apple pieces and sprinkle over the curry powder. Cook for a further 2 minutes more, stirring as it cooks. 2.Crumble the stock cube into a measuring jug, and pour over the boiling water. Mix to combine. Pour into the pan, and stir in the tomato purée and mango chutney. Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat slightly and leave to simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally . Cook until the vegetables are tender. 3.While the soup is simmering, half-fill a medium pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the rice and return to the boil. Cook for 10 minutes, or until the rice is tender. Drain the rice in a sieve and rinse under running water until cold. 4.When the soup is ready, cool the soup for a few minutes and blend with a stick blender or in a food processor until smooth before stirring in the cooled rice. If you want a more rustic, courser texture to the

soup, do not blend. 5.Add enough water to give a good consistency, (about 150-200ml/5½-7fl oz). Heat the soup for 3–4 minutes until piping hot and check the seasoning, add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. 6.Ladle the soup into deep bowls and top each with a spoonful of natural yoghurt or soured cream. 50+ SOLOS

50+ SOLOS is open to Ladies and GENTLEMEN over the age of 50 years and on their own either through divorce or the loss of their partner. There are no subs or fees, just the cost of a meal and perhaps a little drink and a chat with like-minded people. We try to choose a different venue for each meal, normally the first and third Saturday of each month? At this moment we have only a couple of vacancies for ladies but several for gentlemen as some of ‘the regulars’ are away for various reasons so places must be held for them. Everyone is very friendly and we are quite a talkative lot at times. We hope to have a 10 pin bowling match in April against another group - nothing serious!! in May/June several want to go to Aguilas again for the day.. including a boat trip. YOU WILL NOT BE BORED. Come along and try us, no obligation. For general information or to make an enquiry about booking contact RUTH on 966 789 063 or ANNE 966 786 281

High Security Medication We left the Haematology Department at Torrecárdenas Hospital with Pete clutching his latest prescription and me following along behind laden like an itinerant gypsy with handbag, coats, scarves, folders, magazines and drinks bottles, all the paraphernalia associated with a long wait in a hospital corridor. With the innocence of the unknowing I went next day into the Farmacia in Arboleas and presented the prescription to that paragon of pharmaceutical assistance, Nattie. With a sharp intake of breath, she glanced at my guileless expression, and explained gently that the prescription in question had to be ratified by Pete’s doctor – the sayso of one who had been elevated to the status of

Consultant was not good enough! So I made an appointment to see our long-suffering and over worked doctor, who read the prescription once, then read it again very thoughtfully before trawling Pete’s history and the Internet with a furrowed brow. However, the necessary signature was added, and once more I descended to the Farmacia. Once more there was a sharp intake of breath and a quick glance, possibly to ascertain whether I was a drugs baron in disguise, before it was explained to me that 2 signatures were insufficient, the whole shebang had to be faxed to some unknown authority, possibly the High Command on Mars. I trekked back up the vertiginous face of Arboleas to petition Juan Miguel, the Receptionist and Keeper of Law and Order in the Medical Centre, to please fax these, hoping that he would know the correct form of address and electronic numerals for Mars. josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk By now the Farmacia

was shut, so I trotted full of confidence into Felix’s, that safe harbour for the ailing English in Albox, and handed over Pete’s magical green card and paperwork to Ana, who had been front of the queue when brains were handed out, and thus qualified to handle the complexities of my request. Her eyes snapped from the prescription to meet mine. ‘You want this?’ she interrogated. Dumbly I nodded. What had I asked for? Was this some mutant microbe, so dangerous that it was kept under lock and key in an underground vault? ‘We don’t keep this. It must be ordered. We will have it tomorrow.’ On the morrow I returned, hoping for sixth time lucky. Ana saw me coming, and fetched reinforcements in the form of the Boss to verbally underline in bold uppercase that this was a one pill per day one-timeonly prescription. What are these pills? I am waiting to see if they turn Pete turns into Superman – or a frog!

alqueria Famous for Fifteen Minutes John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

Jóse Prataña was on the prowl for copy. His newspaper, El Trapo Nacional was at a low ebb, not much news and all the improvised stories had led to legal action. Jóse was on the lookout for a good story and Alqueria usually obliged. However the Village was temporarily out of rioting and disorder due to a general lethargy and seemed almost peaceful, in its own quirky sort of way. Jóse sat forlornly at a table outside the Bar La Casa Devante wondering where his next story would come from. He had been to Alqueria before and developed a love of Remitroot Whisky which he drank in alarming quantities and with alarming speed. Loco Paco had a habit of engaging people at random in some inane conversation or other. Jóse Prataña was Paco’s target for that evening. Paco’s confused and fanciful utterings seemed quite credible to Jóse. After a bottle of Remitroot Whisky the Tory Party’s welfare plans would seem compassionate, or perhaps that is going a bit too far. Paco was talking about Benjy his pet Saharan Dung Beetle which he had raised from a pup and Bert, his one and a half metre tall rodent which accompanied him everywhere. Bert of course was imaginary. Jóse somehow got the impression he was real. The locals sensing some good sport backed Loco Paco’s story to the hilt. How he was a reclusive genetic scientist and had successfully created this one and a half metre tall rodent

called ‘Bert’. To add a bit of colour they suggested that Paco was teaching Bert the rudiments of playing the saxophone. Jóse made numerous notes, drank more Remitroot Whisky and believed everything he was told. Loco Paco became famous. His fatuous grin adorned the front pages of all the national newspapers. He was hailed as a ‘genetic scientist of colossal proportions’. Some even tipped him for the Noble Prize. Most people who knew Loco Paco however would say that his greatest achievement was riding a bicycle, not well be adequately. Paco was booked to appear on a TV talk show. Other guests included the inventor of the intergalactic pulse motor with integral cheese board and Pedro Alverez the Abyssinian Goat Shirling champion of southern Spain. If the presenter, studio crew and viewers had all been heavily sedated with Remitroot Whisky things may have gone smoothly. However when Paco suggested that the presenter’s head may be on back-to-front the plug was pulled, the researcher fired and Paco send packing back to Alqueria.

viewpoint

Not Tempted, Even With a Full English One of my most treasured memories was that first view of Bermuda as our BOAC VC10 circled the islands, preparing to land on a beautiful clear January day in 1973. The pastel coloured houses with their white lime washed roofs set amongst the verdant sub-tropical landscape, many with a twinkling sapphire in the grounds indicating a private pool, was breathtaking. With the wake of small boats crisscrossing the sparkling azure waters and the ribbons of pink coral beaches, the idyllic picture was complete, and is an image that will forever stay with me. Confession is good for the soul and at a reunion of ex-Bermuda friends, I decided to come clean to a female acquaintance who also worked there in the 70’s. We were attending the wedding of yet another member of the old crowd, and between the champagne and wedding cake, I related a previously untold story to her. At one particular party during the summer of 1974, we both found ourselves unattached and naturally gravitated towards each other. We were already friends and members of a large clique of ex-pats who often found themselves in the same place at the same time, usually at one of the many parties or at an assortment of watering holes. And so it was on this particular evening. We had a dance or three, I added to my

already large intake of Cockspur Rum, and as we chatted, I hatched a cunning plan of seduction. Heh,heh, hehh! It was 2am, but the party was still in full swing. As casually as I could, I suggested to my companion that she accompany me back to my place for a little conversation over coffee, some soft music and a viewing of my photograph collection. No strings attached. Yeah, right! And so, with me on my supa dupa Suzuki trail bike, and her following on her Vespa sewing machine, we arrived at Carisbrooke – a house I shared with three other guys. They were all still at the party. Perfecto! I put some appropriate music on my cool Sony twin cassette deck, carefully avoiding my beloved Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple albums in favour of The Stylistics and Bread. Then having adjusted the lighting and settled the object of my attentions in our best chair – the one that wobbled and had a small cloud of stuffing forever trying to escape the upholstery, but didn’t smell of cooked sausages and onions like the others - and satisfied that the scene was romantically set, I repaired to the kitchen to mix our drinks and brew coffee. So far so good. We spent an hour chatting and sipping yet more rum, then after sidling up to the subject as diplomatically as possible, and in my best Barry White voice, I broached the inevitable question: ‘Why don’t you stay the night’. There was an encouraging pause, but then the not unexpected response: ‘I really should go’. Normally this would have launched me into my repertoire of chat

up lines and plain old bull, but with my fail safe plan B in place, I could afford to be the perfect gentleman and I didn’t press the matter further. So smiling indulgently and after a final nightcap, I showed her to the door where I paused for a last gasp effort, and gazing into her four blue eyes said something like: “Are yoush ure, ‘cos I do a meeeean flnglish brefast.” I could afford to be relaxed and seemingly content with the last knock-back - this time an even more encouraging: “Perhaps next time” because what she did not know was that while I was making coffee, I had slipped out of the back door, dashed round to the front of the house and let the air out of both of her tyres. Heh,heh, hehh! She was going nowhere. After a final less than passionate kiss, I closed the door and flung my back against it - something like Danger Mouse in one of those cartoons - and waited. The scooter’s engine brrrm’d into life and then remarkably, it pulled away. I waited, but the sound of the Vespa receded into the distance without as much as a hiccup - unlike me. She really must be plastered, I seem to remember thinking, then the evening’s excesses took over and I hit my lonely bed. Sometime later that morning, one of my house mates shook me awake and said that I had better take a look at my bike, because there sulking in the drive was my beloved Suzuki, both tyres as flat as a misers pancake. But not as deflated as me. There’s drunk, and then there is that weird beyond drunk state; but how far gone must you be to mistake a trail bike for a scooter? Best laid plans. Right!

tries with Gregory and Jose, scoring one more a piece. Again Lorca came back with a converted try to bring the scores to 22-29 Orihuela RFC. This was not the end of it with David again scoring an excellent try and Gregory for the conversion to make it a very tense finish with just before the end Lorca getting a well deserved try bonus point to eventually bring the final score 29-36 to Orihuela RFC.

MAZARRON FC 0 LA HOYA LORCA CF 1

At the weekend ITV Orihuela RFC cadetes were away to Lorca while the B team were at Totana, who have been improving week on week in their first season. ITV Orihuela RFC surprisingly came away with an emphatic bonus point try win 65-7. That is all With new coach Javi taking over from the departed I know as I was not playing. disputed goal which they scored.

Mazarron goalkeeper Marcos dived full length to turn away a La Hoya shot after 7 minutes and then Tolo raced down the right for Mazarron a minute later only to be foiled when his shot was smothered by the La Hoya keeper.

Having only been able to go to Lorca with 13 players things were not going to be easy from the start, but they got off to a great start after some strong defence by the home side David managed to break through to get the get the games opening try by powering through and Gregory the extras.

Towards to end of the first quarter Gregory got in on the try scoring act with some quick feet dancing through the defence and again getting the conversion, but Lorca were not going to lie down and hit back pinning the opposition back on their Mazarron had a number of chances in the first half, own line and after a great try saving tackle by David mainly from dead ball situations, the best of which fell they eventually went over in the corner. La Hoya took the lead after 13 minutes when Tico lost the ball in midfield and the ball was played to a La Hoya striker who looked suspiciously offside. His shot was turned away by Marcos but fell to Mariano who slotted the ball home at the far post.

Orihuela RFC hit back with another try attacking from deep with Jose going over to put Orihuela RFC back in charge, but Lorca were determined to make sure they were going to make them work hard for it and just before half time hit back with another try Mazarron again dominated the second half and going in at half time 19-10 to Orihuela RFC. should have equalised after 52 minutes. Randry In the second half Lorca went at Orihuela RFC and Jose Ruben combined on the left and Randry’s and picked up another try, before Orihuela RFC put excellent cross found Tolo unmarked at the far post. some distance between the teams with two more

All credit must go to Lorca for their never say die attitude, which gave them two points out of the game with a try and losing bonus point. The next game is away to Murcia for the A team this weekend, 22 March, kicking off at around 17.00, it is their final game of the season. This is followed on 29 March by the cadetes and the B team at home to Murcia XV. I am now at Zoco Market on Sundays third row up from the road at the back of the market, so come on down there for all of your rugby branded clothing, and anything you want to know about rugby in the area. Training is at the Miguel Hernandez University ground at 20.15 on Tuesday and Thursday for the seniors and juveniles. The juniors start at 18.15. So if you are interested, dig out those rugby boots and come along and see for yourself what it is like. New players are always welcome no matter what age or skill level you are. to Moha who headed just over from Tico’s free kick. However, Moha gave the ball away in midfield after 30 minutes and only a superb last ditch tackle by Juan Andreo prevented La Hoya from making it 2-0 at half time.

Unfortunately, Tolo’s weak shot went straight back across goal into the hands of the relieved La Hoya keeper. A minute leader Tolo hit a fierce shot from 25 yards which the goalkeeper just managed to get his fists to and clear.

SMGS at El Plantio

La Hoya were limited to the occasional breakaway but the excellent Gilberto came to the rescue after 82 minutes with a lunging tackle after a La Hoya forward had rounded Marcos and was about to increase their lead. Mazarron had another great chance to equalise in the last minute when Cecilio and Tolo combined to set up Juanillo but he lost his footing and his shot went harmlessly wide. day. John Sorrenson was the only person to make par with his excellent 36 point haul. Paula and Ove Andersson also produced good scores to make up a very successful four ball. Wenche Westberg had a win in the ‘in it to win it’ draw so everyone went home with a prize. Methinks being a member at El Plantio has its advantages. Our best visitor was Bernard Tate with 27 points – not bad on a day which saw the scores range from 10 to 36. Nearest the pin prizes went to Mick Roscoe, Keith Wickham, Alan Williams and another guest Mark Tendal.

I think it would be safe to say that this week’s venue isn’t the most popular amongst a few of our members. Even so, 32 members and guests took on the challenge on a bright but blustery day. A couple of the greens were less than perfect but overall the course was in fairly good condition. The wind made some of the long par 4’s a real battle and this was reflected in the low scores returned by all but a handful of players.

No such problems for our Scandinavian contingent who produced some of the best scores of the

Bronze division was won by John Sorrenson (36) with Ray Ewins (34), Mick Roscoe (31) and Paula Andersson (30) taking the other places. Man in form Mike Jordan (35) took the honours in the Silver Division followed by Steve Davis (31), Keith Wickham (30) and Chris Hamblett (28). The low handicappers of Gold Division didn’t fair quite as well with 33 by Ove Andersson enough for the win. Second was Tony Smale (31), third Ivan Hanak (30) and Steve Fleet just snuck into fourth winning on countback with 28 points. Next week our Venue is Mar Menor followed by La Finca and then Villamartin. We play every Wednesday, 52 weeks a year, so if you fancy a game give Phil a ring on 966774197 or visit our website www.smgs.org - visitors are always made welcome.

ROCKETS’S GOLF SOCIETY ALENDA GOLF – 11th MARCH 2014 To start off this report it would be remiss of me if I did not congratulate Rocket’s League team who came away from La Peraleja Golf last Friday with a win over Paddy’s Point Golf Society 3 games to 1. Our first win this year but not only that, we took the bonus points too. Well done lads. On to Alenda where we played a medal and also incorporating 5 Singles games. Out of these 3 games finished All Square with Arthur Williams defeating Tom Richardson 5&4 and Mick Hithersay defeating Ron Chambers 4 & 3. It was a lovely day with the course in good condition wall to wall sunshine and thankfully no wind. Although we played a Medal round the scoring was pretty good. Next Vega Baja League game is at Alenda on Friday 4th of April. It’s not unusual for something unusual to happen on our days out but on this day we had two. First it was Rodney Smith who when trying to drive a left handed buggy, right handed, ruined Les Yates’s trousers when he couldn’t stop his buggy proving he is not ambidextrous. Now he is on a refresher buggy driving course taken by Les. The other was when Alan Moody requested assistance in finding his cigarette after dropping it to play his shot. Surely that was a penalty? It’s also not unusual for us to enjoy Roxy’s munchies on our return to Izzy’s Bar. Thanks Tony, Jackie and Roxy. Both players tee off, then play their partners ball for the second shot. At this stage the team decide which ball to continue with, playing alternate shots. Weather conditions

Tuesday Night Trios - Ten Pin Bowling League Week Twenty-Three played 11th March 2014

Tuesday the 11th. saw us back to one of our favourite courses on what can only be described as a perfect day for golfing and at a cost of 6 Euros cheaper than our normal rate, for each player. However, once again slow play was very evident even though it was not caused by any of our members with the course being very busy and a great deal playing prior to our first tee of 10.00am.

The top two teams in the league, Team Finland and Split Happens opposed each other and, produced some excellent bowling between them. SH, with Sue Walsh and Kjell Monsen bowling scratch games of 221 and 247 respectively, easily took the first game by 159 pins. But, TF came roaring back, with Jukka Koskinens 243 and 215 scr games, were able to take games two and three.

However, with the course being in very good condition we should not complain too much and with 3 players coming in with 40 points and over half those playing returning scores of more than 30 points it was obviously a great day. The results to our Stableford Competion were Category 1. 1st.Sue Owens 40 points on c/b from Mick Byrne who I would add had 24 points on the front 9. 3rd. Ron Matthews 37 points. Category 2. 1st. Vince Lannon 40 points 2nd. Alan Darby 33 and 3rd. Brian Coombes 30 points. Category 3. 1st. Roger Twigg 34 points 2nd.Al Warnock 33 and believe it or not in 3rd. place and the very first time in the winning enclosure, yes it is Cheltenham week, Syd Avery. The nearest the pins prizes to-day went to, Hole 5. Ivan Meyrick. Hole 8. Mick Byrne. Hole 17 Ron Matthews and 4th. shot NTP Hole 12. Vince Lannon. Lo Marabu Golf Society

Lo Marabu Golf Society (in association with Costa Blanca Green Fee Services) at Font Del Llop on 10th March 2014. For this month’s social meeting we had a friendly match versus the Ship Hispaniola GS and a group of 26 players visited the established course at Font del Llop taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. The weather was beautiful and Font del Llop was in excellent condition as always. For 2014 both societies have agreed to play on the second Monday of each month collectively so that they can both obtain the economies of scale and this was the third such meeting to date this year. For this months meeting we agreed to hold a ‘friendly’ match based on a stableford with the best ten scores from each side to count and the scoring on the day was excellent although assisted by the use of the slope handicap system.

and CD Montesinos went, and good to see him back following his illness, even though his golf is not yet back to normal, Peter Kerr. Our scratch card to-day was won by Paul Hurrell with Arsenal. Following our game at Vistabella on Saturday 15th. we are then at La Serena on March 24th. followed by Vistabella on the 29th. March and then Font del Llop on Friday the 4th.April. So if you are interested in joining us for a little fun & competitive golf and at the same time achieve some of the cheapest golf on the Costa’s then contact David Winder on 626774157 or email him at davidwinder.torregolf@ gmail.com for more information Our photograph of the winners at Altorreal L-R, Vince Lannon, Brian Coombes, Syd Avery, Mick Byrne, Ron Matthews, Sue Owens, Al Warnock, Roger Twigg and Alan Darby (dig those shorts!)

The result was a win for the Lo Marabu GS my a narrow margin of only 5 points with a score of 329 vs. 324 with both sides averaging in excess of 32 points per counting player. There were a number of prizes on the day and the winning scores were as follows: Best Score Ship GS – Wayne Matthews – 38 points Best Scores Lo Marabu GS – Andy Jones – 36 points Nearest the Pins – Lloyd Murray, Haydn Wright, Grant Goble, Mike Grinter and Mike Probert. The next social day fixture for these societies is at La Serena on Monday14th April 2014 BUT the Lo Marabu GS will hold their monthly meeting on Thursday 27th March 2014 at La Torre where we will play for the ‘Whacker Trophy’ Report by Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services on 966 704 752 or 661 345 931 or see us at our web-site at www.costa-blanca-greenfees.com.

However, SH still took the overall pinfall, to ensure a 4 – 4 points draw. Los Lobos continued their winning ways with a 6 – 2 defeat of Crazy Pinz. Shane “I’ve got a new ball” Winfield of Cornish Pride used it to good effect, to inflicit another defeat on The Dreamers. Even Allan Flitmans 602 handicap series couldn’t prevent CP Hello winning 8 points to nil. The ‘happiest’ team in the league, Bar Mosquitos, enjoyed themselves again and, with all three bowlers being consistantly on the night, came out 6 – 2 victors. Los Bandidos came up against an exceptional Mixers team and, with all three bowlers of Mix bowling a 600+ handicap series, were handed an 8 – 0 defeat by almost 250 pins. Rudy Zee led the way for Mix with a 647 series. After last weeks demolition of Crazy Pinz in the semi final of the Cup, Splash continued where they left off and, overpowered

Juans’ Warriors 8 – 0.

With Antonio Berenguer bowling his highest scratch and handicap series of the season, Splash won by over two hundred pins. It was a case of “while the top two teams faced each other”, Hall y Day thought they might be able to gain ground on them. But Caballo Negro had other ideas and with Jouni Lappalainen hitting his highest scratch game and series, by a long way, CB inflicted a 6 – 2 defeat on HyD. Next week sees the start of our three week Easter Egg ‘race’, kindly sponsored by Donna of Right Move Insurance, where bowlers have to string strikes together to claim raffle tickets, which will give them the opportunity to win Eggs in the raffle.
