London’s £12bn Olympic park opens up to the public
Almost 10 years and £12bn in the making, the full extent of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park finally opened to the public on Saturday. It claims to be “the biggest new park in Europe for 150 years”. Its 230 hectares (568 acres) encompass waterways and rail lines, and is, according to its maker, the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC), the size of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens combined. It features forests and wetlands, lawns and meadows, dotted with a velodrome and aquatics centre, a stadium and arena.
In the 19 months since the end of the games, £300m has been spent on adapting venues, planting trees and moving minor mountains. The northern half of the park, composed of neatly sculpted Teletubby mounds fringed by swaths of wildflower meadows, reopened last July, and has already received a million visitors. A further 3 million are expected in the coming year, now that the final piece in the jigsaw is complete with the opening of the southern park, promoted as the “Southbank for the East End”. ‘We imagined it as a

place for performance and play, markets and festivals, circuses and events,’ says its designer, James Corner, who is best known for transforming New York’s derelict elevated railway into the acclaimed High Line Park, where wild planting is integrated into its industrial structure. ‘We’ve brought a similar idea of linear choreography and movement, designing the park as a sequential experience of outdoor rooms, connected by an arced promenade of trees.’ These ‘rooms’ take the form of three circular paved areas, lined with assorted benches and stepped seating, as if awaiting an impromptu public performance. They will host carousels and helter-skelters, music and poetry readings, and will one day be ringed by beds of tall grasses, planted by Dutch horticulturalist Piet Oudolf, who also worked on the High Line. This sequence of spaces is framed at either end by low-key play areas: there is a fun interactive fountain and a thicket of
wooden poles supporting a small rope bridge. A water pump gushes into a sandpit, while chunks of granite and orange concrete walls tilt at jaunty angles. It will be interesting to see how the new areas cope with the number of expected visitors, particularly once the main stadium is up and running (with its retractable seating as a place for concerts, athletics, and the new home for West Ham United) in 2016. Looming over the site is the ArcelorMittal Orbit, a monument to a steel magnate, and the new visitor centre. There will be 6,000 homes across five new neighbourhoods within the park, as well as the commercial centre of the £2bn Stratford International Quarter, with its 370,000 square metres of office space To the south Stratford High Street has a new tower block of apartments, while to the west there is a 1,000room Unite student accommodation block.
Rojales Town Hall
Rojales Town Hall has proceeded to install a 29 m long grandstand with a capaticity for 184 spectators on the football pitch of artificial grass, one of the most frequented sport premises in the municipality where 15 teams of the municipal football school train and play. Seats are made of polypropylene on a structure of galvanised steel, with a cost of €9,000. The Councillor for Sports, Pedro Llopis stated that we endeavoured to make true this improvement as soon as we had the budget to do it. This improvement was high demanded by football fans and families who have their children enrolled in the municipal sport schools.
Who are the Taliban?

They want everyone to bow to Allah, become Muslim and believe and live as they do. They wish for their laws/religion to be strictly enforced in Afghanistan and their homelands, and ultimately throughout the world. The sole purpose of the Taliban is to fight for their perception of freedom, to which end they arm themselves, recruit soldiers, and, in the pursuit of their aims, kill those who they see as enemies to their cause.

Afghanistan’s presidential election that will bring the first-ever democratic transfer of power in a country plagued by conflict for decades closed on Saturday amid relief that attacks by Taliban fighters were fewer than feared. It will take six weeks for a final result to be declared in the race to succeed President Hamid Karzai. In Afghanistan’s rugged terrain many polling stations are inaccessible by road; the ballot boxes and other furniture necessary to create a polling station have had to be transported to the sites by donkey. This could be the beginning of a potentially dangerous period for Afghanistan; the war-ravaged country desperately needs a leader to quell the expected rise in violence as foreign troops prepare to leave. “Today we proved to the world that this is a people driven country,” Karzai told his nation in televised remarks. The constitution barred Karzai from seeking another term, but, after 12 years in power, he is widely expected to retain influence through politicians loyal to him. Turnout was seven million out of 12 million eligible voters, or about 58 percent, according to preliminary estimates, according to election commission chief Ahmad Yousuf Nuristani. That is well above the 4.5 million who voted at the last election in 2009 which was marred by widespread fraud. More than 350,000 Afghan troops were deployed, guarding against attacks on polling stations and voters.
The capital, Kabul, was sealed off by rings of roadblocks and checkpoints. In the city of Kandahar, cradle of the Taliban insurgency, the mood was tense. Vehicles were not allowed to move on the roads and checkpoints were set up at every intersection. In some areas of the country voters complained that polling stations had run out of ballot papers. The interior ministry said six officials - including an intelligence agent - were detained for trying to rig the vote, and elsewhere several people were arrested for trying to use fake voter cards. If there is no outright winner, which straw polls suggest is likely, two frontrunners would go into a run-off on May 28, spinning out the process into the holy month of Ramadan. This would create a delay, leaving barely sufficient time to complete a pact between Kabul and Washington to keep up to 10,000 U.S. troops in the country beyond 2014. Karzai has rejected the pact, but the three frontrunners have pledged to sign it. Without the pact the Afghan forces would be left on their own to fight the Taliban, a task that is almost certainly beyond them, and which would lead to a strengthening of the Taliban, shattering the fragile peace and a return to violence throughout the country. The election is a landmark after 13 years of struggle that has killed at least 16,000 Afghan civilians and thousands more soldiers. Nearly 3,500 members of the U.S.-led coalition force have died since deployment in the country over a decade ago.

The restaurant ‘Mariano’ Camposol was the venue for the celebration of this association of youth under 18 in the likeness of ‘Lions’ The popular entertainer Barrington gave his usual immaculate performance which was enjoyed by both young and old. A presentation that was attended by the Mayor of Mazarrón, Ginés Campillo, Councillor for Youth, Andres Valera, the Mayor of Saladillo and Camposol José Andrés Navarro, and the representative of the Club ‘Torrevieja Costa Lions’ Anka Peltonen.who was accompanied by Martti Timonen Anka Peltonen conveyed that “I come
on behalf of the District Governor, Alfonso Piñol, who was unable to attend to explain that we are very proud that they have launched the first club ‘Leos’ of Spain here in Mazarrón.” He added that the goal of this partnership is that “young people learn the principles under which the ‘Lions’ develop our work and what it means to be a Lion’, helping others that the main purpose of ‘Lionism’”. warns British Embassy The British Embassy in Madrid is warning Easter visitors to Spain to take good care of their passports, after more than 6000 were lost or stolen in the country last year. A lost or stolen passport means spending precious holiday time and money to get an Emergency Travel Document or ETD in order to return home. The Embassy urges travellers to watch a new Foreign Office video “Enjoy your holiday” on YouTube, in which British tourists who have suffered a lost or stolen passport reveal the true costs in terms of time, money and frustration in dealing with the issue. Replacing a passport whilst abroad requires a visit to the nearest British Consulate – which may be several hours away – to obtain an Emergency Travel Document that costs the euro equivalent of 95 pounds. “Your passport is valuable”, says Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain. “If you do need to carry it, keep it in a money belt under your clothes rather than in a handbag or rucksack, and never leave passports in a car. “Avoid carrying all your passports

Ed Miliband seeks media guru for TV help ahead of 2015 election
Ed Miliband is to hire an expert in broadcasting to stop him looking ‘weird’ on TV. This is after a recent poll, which found that 41% of people think Miliband is ‘weird’ or ‘very weird’ The Labour party is tasked with recruiting a senior adviser to bring ‘fresh ideas’ to overhauling the leader’s image. In addition to having ideas about how to improve Mr Miliband’s ‘brand strengths’, the successful candidate will also need to have experience of dealing with ‘bad news stories’. The new job comes with a £44,244.40 salary, and a ‘fixed sum allowance’ of £971. The contract will last only until a month after the general election, due in May 2015.
The job involves ‘overseeing the broadcast output and visual images of the Leader of the Opposition’ and advising Mr Miliband on ‘broadcast performance and helping him prepare for clips/interviews/visits’. The new adviser will also be tasked with improving relations with the main broadcasters in the run up to the election. It includes: ‘Developing fresh ideas for making the best of Leader of Opposition’s brand strengths and communicating his message in broadcast medium.’ According to the advertisment essential experience for the winning candidate includes ‘experience of working with senior politicians’ and ‘experience of dealing with good and bad news stories’.

At least ten convictions could be overturned after stenographer Daniel Kochanski failed to deliver transcripts that New York judges were expecting. Yes dear, we ARE! going shopping again. Shopping may be a pain in the backside now but spare a thought for our medieval counterparts. Take lingerie shopping for example. This was the model that Scarlet O’Hara used for her famous 18 inch waist! The demise of the Corset came about quite by accident. In 1913, Mary Phelps Jacob, a New York Socialite wanted a piece of underwear that would not poke out under her evening gown. She came up with something that would improve women’s lives forever. As yet it had no name. It was the result of two silken handkerchiefs strategically folded together with some pink ribbon. This was the first bra, originally named the brassiere.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Before I get started today I would like to say a big “thank you” to a superb bloke that turned up to my clinic on Friday afternoon, at Jack’s Bar in Albox (advertising finished) and after saying he had been reading my articles for the past 2 years he then expressed his amusement about my attitudes, nailing it beautifully on the head, concerning my getting ‘On My Soapbox’. I would like to say “Lesson learned”, but I will try to keep my passions (pet hates) under better control :-) (at least until next week). Let’s get started with something that I read about earlier this week concerning DropBox checking out what was in YOUR box. Did you know that every time you use ‘Dropbox’ to upload valuable files that you wish to share with everyone else in you group, Dropbox, without the slightest breach of your personal rights, can read the contents of you dropbox for propitiatory software and anything else that they have been asked to look out for. Doesn’t Dropbox, and for that matter just about every other ‘online’ storage facility encrypt your information? Yes, they do, to ensure that even the employees of the storage facility can not ‘just have a quick look’! Most claim that it takes a document issued by the courts before they would even consider releasing ‘sensitive’ information (YOUR INFORMATION) to an outside authority. Google and Microsoft make similar claims but recent history would indicate the fallacy of that statement (the soapbox is out again – sorry!). So how does Dropbox know that you have something that ‘Big Brother’ says you shouldn’t have? Hashing! This isn’t the process of turning meat and potatoes into something
simple but delicious (sorry any vegetarians out there), it is the process of calculating a very long resulting number by an even more complicated calculation. We have touched on it before under the section of encryption and passwords some time ago but now is a good time to actually understand how hashing can allow you to read something without actually reading anything! Confused? Just wait, it gets better! Breaking hashing down to a very simple example. I created a simple ASCII text file of 1 letter (‘a’) NOT (‘A’). The result of the calculation was very different from the letter (‘b’) or (‘A’) or (‘B’). a == 0cc175b9c0f1b6a831c399e269772661 A == 7fc56270e7a70fa81a5935b72eacbe29 b == 92eb5ffee6ae2fec3ad71c777531578f B == 9d5ed678fe57bcca610140957afab571 Now consider a word, a phrase, a paragraph, a complete novel or even the collected works of Shakespeare. Every last one would generate a UNIQUE number. Change 1 letter in any of the above and you would generate a different UNIQUE number to the one it had! This method works just as well with binary files as it does with ASCII files. So using this method, anyone can check out anything, WITHOUT having to open the file, simply by comparing the generated number to a list of hash numbers already created and find out whether it was the same one or not! The comforting thing is that no matter what the file might contain, your rights to privacy haven’t been in the least bit violated! We should all be fantastic cooks, judging by the number of cookery programmes on television. If it’s not Nigella Lawson showing us how to cook some impossible dish, then it’s some bake off or other every twenty five minutes. Once in a while is fine, but several a day week after week is too much. But what I wanted to ask was, whose kitchen is like theirs anyway? First of all, I’d love, just once, to see them run out of some vital ingredient, just as their dish is coming to fruition, you know, the way it happens in real life. What will they do then? What I usually do is ignore it and hope it tastes okaya bit difficult though if you’re making egg and chips and there are no eggs! And what’s with the clothes and the pristine aprons? Come on, how many of us are without splodges of tomato sauce, gravy or whatever else we are cooking, on our clothes, on the walls or on the cooker? According to the TV chefs, this never happens. I’m no fan of “Come Dine With Me”, but at least they leave a mess in the kitchen. Then there are the other distractions, which we’ve all experienced to some extent. There you are, singing away to the background music, washing away the cooking taste with a glass or two of the wine you were saving for dinner, when disaster strikes! From the lounge is the sound of the cat screeching. You run in and there’s your toddler, hands around its neck, throttling it for all it’s worth! What do you do, ignore the blue murder to sway back to your creation, or save the cat? Over to you Nigella! And finally there’s...the pan flip! When I’m cooking I turn the food over with a wooden spoon or spatula. Not these chefs on television, oh no, they’re far too nifty for that. They just flick their wrist and bingo! The food is turned in the blink of an eye and is cooking perfectly, not a mark on anything. Easy! Not on your life. When I do it, the food goes everywhere and we’re running for the brush, the Jiff and the telephone number of the Chinese takeaway. You see, that’s the thing with television experts…they’re so irritatingly good at what they do. But I’m an expert too… at ringing for that takeaway!

For those of us that try our luck at quiz nights Yellowstone is the answer to a perennial question; which is the oldest National Park in the world? It’s not Hyde Park as someone hazarded a guess recently at our weekly quiz. Last week even more hilariously the same team gave the answer ‘Notting Hill’ when asked what the largest wild carnivore in Britain is. They thought they heard carnival. I digress; Yellowstone Park sits atop a Super Volcano; this term is used funnily enough for very large volcanoes. There have been three major eruptions over the last two million years; the first was the largest being 2500 times larger than the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980. The park owes its beauty to the cataclysmic forces that have shaped it. Lakes, rivers and mountain ridges have all been put in place by the forces at work under the earth. Smaller eruptions have taken place relatively recently, 14,000 years ago a 5km wide crater was formed to enlarge Yellowstone Lake after one of these. The area has had all manner of eruptions, from the huge gas explosions which cause the pyroclastic flows that obliterate everything for hundreds of kilometres around, to relatively slow lava flows and steam eruptions. We all know about the geyser Old Faithful, caused by ground water seeping underground, being superheated by the intense heat and exploding upwards. Underneath Yellowstone the Caldera has been measured as being 80kms long by 20kms wide,

going so deep underground as to have a capacity of 4000km3. Scientists have been measuring the ground since 1923 and at first it rose slowly, about 1cm a year then between 2004/8 it suddenly rose up over 20cms. The ground is pushed up as magma and gases fill the magma chamber below. The area constantly has earth tremors with over a thousand a year recorded, sometimes even more. Over four days in January 2010 there were 1620 earth tremors though the largest measured only 3.8M. Just like toppling dominoes the geological fault lines under our feet interconnect. On March 30th the largest earthquake in 30 years struck Yellowstone measuring 4.3M. Two days later in Chile way to the south a huge 8.2M quake struck the coast causing tidal waves of up to 2 metres. In 1992 a quake in California caused hundreds of mini quakes in the park. Luckily we can all trust the US Govt; they assure us that although the giant ball of molten rock underneath the bears and salmon is growing; it’s not growing fast enough to be of any concern. In fact after a recent report measured the magma as 2.5 times larger than previously guessed at, the Yellowstone Volcano observatory said the following - though fascinating, the new findings do not imply increased geologic hazards at Yellowstone, and certainly do not increase the chances of a ‘super eruption’ in the near
future. This is just as well as if and when the darn thing does go off, its estimated that ash would fall up to 750 kms away and be at least 10 cms deep. The ash is highly toxic and would pollute water courses and farmland. Traffic would come to a halt as the fine dust clogs up air filters. Planes would be grounded for thousands of miles around. So infrastructure would be at a standstill and America’s ability to feed itself would cease. Globally temperatures would drop for a good few years also. We could all however enjoy wondrous sunsets just as JMW Turner witnessed and painted from England after the 1815 Mount Tambora eruption in Indonesia.

Q. Please explain the situations in which a resident qualifies for non-payment of capital gains tax.
A . The first thing is to be able to prove to the notary the day of the sale that you are in fact a Spanish tax resident. It is very important to realize that having what everyone calls the “residencia” issued by the police does not in fact prove you are a tax resident of Spain, and that if this is the only document you take to the notary to prove tax residency , the notary will consider you a non resident and you will be subject to a 3% retention. To prove you are a tax resident your solicitor needs to request a certificate from the tax authorities, which can then be taken to the notary. If you suffer the nasty surprise of them saying that in fact you are a non resident, you will need to get this amended by proving to them that you are in fact a resident before they will issue you with the correct certificate for the notary. If you are moving to a smaller property, you can claim exemption of a percentage of the capital gains tax. 2. Claim of total exemption if you are over 65 years old: If you are over 65 and sell your main home (where you must have lived for at least 3 years as a resident), you can claim 100% exemption from capital gains tax even if you do not reinvest. Alcalá del Júcar celebrates its 650th birthday party with a Medieval Market Alcalá del Jucar was given official recognition as an independent village on 18 April 1364. Now, 650 years later, the village holds a Medieval Market on 17 to 20 April, with medieval minstrels, a juggler walking on stilts, a wooden merry-go-round, all sorts of medieval games and above all, stalls with the real craft work still to be found in this typical Amata market. The village itself - a jewel in an otherwise drab landscape - is also well worth a visit Anybody who has driven along the autovia from Alicante to Madrid will have desperately wished for one of Google’s self drive cars so that one can watch a video instead of having to concentrate on the desolate landscape.
The road makes its way through a vast and empty space with here and there a single tree. And yet, hidden in a deep gorge carved by the Júcar river, lies a picturesque village in a landscape decorated with small waterfalls, large and decorative rocks, hillsides covered with forest. The village is a maze of small stone stairs with an imposing castle crowning what is one of Spain’s better-known tourist attractions with a good selection of restaurants, hotels and more humble lodgings This Easter the village celebrates its 650th birthday; it is 650 years ago that Alcalá de Júcar gained its independence and became a village in its own right. So the good burghers decided to celebrate by making diverse excursions to that time, such as a Carnival procession with medieval floats on which participants stood dressed in medieval clothes, and now a Medieval Market with medieval stalls on the banks of the river Júcar. Here the visitor can walk round and appraise the wares of various craftsmen and women, many of whom will be working at their stall. A chance to buy a souvenir that doesn’t come from some Third World country or a small factory near Madrid. Some of the work on sale is just pleasant to look at, but other work is handsome as well as useful such as hand made pottery, leather belts and
handbags, lamps, clothing, jewellery boxes and mirrors. Here is a chance to own something really exclusive without having to pay inflated gallery prices. The Market is not just a collection of craft stalls; Solredo, a trio of slightly crazy musicians, walk around playing medieval music and Lydia walks on stilts, lies on a bed of nails and ties herself in knots, and plays with fire. For the children there is a small merrygo-round and medieval table games (very popular even in these days of computer consoles). Alcalá de Júcar itself is a lovely village with a Roman bridge, three large caves and its own impressive castle; visitors can also enjoy numerous activities such as horse riding, rafting, fishing, climbing and various guided walking tours. One of Spain’s many “caminos de Santiago” (the pilgrim routes to Santiago de Compostella) passes through the village and for people who don’t want to follow a guide nor walk the odd 1,000 kms there are a number of sign-posted local walks. You can use a loud, strong voice or grunt directly at him and pull back from the back of his neck and collar – not from the top, but from the back and pull up, otherwise he can interpret this as you getting into the fight as well, and this is when the dog can turn on the human and bite him because his level of intensity is so high, he doesn’t think “oh, that’s the human.” You’re just another dog in the fight and before you know it, the dog you’re trying to defend is coming after you.

First, do not get rid of your instincts. There is no knowledge behind instinctual intelligence so “not thinking” is actually a good thing. In my profession, I only use “thinking” when I have to explain something to the human. With dogs, it’s all about instinct and energy. Here’s what you need to keep in mind. You can stop a dog fight by observing body language. This is what I do with aggressive cases – stop the bad dog behavior at the very instance you see it about to escalate. But if that’s not possible, during a dog fight, once there is one occurring, stay calm and observe who or which of the two dogs is at a higher level of intensity. That’s the dog I’m going to focus on. Then you need to step in to give that dog the right touch – this means the ribcage area. The reason is that this forces the dog to open his mouth and let go of his hold on the other dog during the dog fight. It’s about timing too, so look for the right moment and then act quickly.

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC) Charity
“THE NEVER ENDING STORY”
Following the much published tragedy recently, when the EHCRC were unable to save the life of a young horse starved to death in premises on the outskirts of Torrevieja, the morning of Monday March 24th was a much more joyous occasion. The day started as normal. It was nine o’clock, all of the seventy eight equines had been fed and those stabled overnight were being turned out to spend the day in their respective paddocks. At nine thirty all this changed when one of the nine mares rescued at the beginning of March along with five other male horses from an illegal horse dealer in Callosa de Segura, lay down in her paddock, and proceeded to give birth to a healthy foal. Sue Weeding, co founder of the EHCRC in Rojales takes up the story, “ We knew the mare was with foal but Dorothea our vet believed she was only about seven months pregnant because of her size. However, the foal was small because of severe malnutrition of the mother. If she had been born three weeks earlier this foal would have not survived. The mare was chained to a concrete wall with several other horses in very close proximity and the foal would probably have been trampled on. After our initial shock and surprise everyone who was here working at the
centre that morning rallied round to separate the mare and her baby from the other eight rescued mares sharing the paddock with her. Dorothea was called and she came immediately and checked over the pair and all was well health wise. The next thing we had to do was ensure the foal could not get through or under the electric fencing separating the paddocks and wander into danger where our other many equines reside. We wanted to ensure that the mother was still in close contact with her companions which would reduce considerably her stress level. We enlisted the assistance of Linda and Paul at Cookeaze in Dolores who supply us with our food for our Sunday afternoon open days. They kindly donated several wooden pallets to make part of the solid barrier to fence of the new arrival and her mother. The remainder of the secure area came from our great friends and supporters at Rojales Town Hall who rushed to our aid with several large plastic road barriers.” Sue continues, “ Life here at the EHCRC is full of ups and downs and our happiness at the arrival of this beautiful young horse turned to sadness two days later. Arisco, a magnificent old Spanish military horse who we rescued in January 2012 was diagnosed with renal failure and we, on
the advice of Dorothea, had him put to sleep. He had two happy years with us and was a favourite with everyone who met him. He will be missed by all of us here who were close to him. Life of course goes on and we welcome visitors on our Sunday afternoon open days to come and see our new arrival” The EHCRC would welcome any donations or sponsorship to support the work that they are doing. Home-owners in tourist hot spots should be preparing their property now if they wish to benefit fully from the 2014 holiday rental market, advised the Overseas Guides Company. New rules governing holiday lets in some countries mean owners who do not prepare in advance may not have their property ready in time for high season, particularly in popular European destinations such as Spain, France, Portugal, Italy and Greece. Said Richard Way, Editor of the Overseas Guides Company, who publishes guides to buying property in 15 countries: “Anyone who has recently purchased a holiday home they want to let is likely to have paperwork to sort out, as well as kitting out the property and arranging the practical things like organising changeovers. Leave these things too late and you’ll miss out on the most profitable time of the year – the summer. We’ve listed eight tips to help get owners started.” 1. REGISTER your property for tourist rentals. Spain, Greece and Portugal, amongst other countries, all require properties to have a licence or authorisation from the local council in order to be let legally to holidaymakers. Being caught in breach of this rule could lead to a hefty fine – in Spain this can range from €3,000 to €30,000. “These weren’t my people. They were just people who would talk to me because I was in their boat, but it was a bad boat to be in-an unseaworthy, shabby little boat, and I could suddenly see that it was going to break up and sink.” Group suicide is it fashionable? Is there an attraction? If so, what is it? Very dark humour emerges from the miserable lives of four very different people. Hornby moralises, allowing the characters to reflect on their misery, to reassess the value or worthlessness of their lives. But don’t expect any glorious moments of redemption or melodrama. The characters are feisty representatives of humanity, utterly convincing. The Topper’s House Four bent on self-destruction. Martin had the most to lose. He had been a tv celebrity, married with children but his life had spiralled out of control with nightclubs and teenage girls. Catastrophic bad decisions had ruined him. He had thrown away every opportunity. Unbalanced and poisonous and he admits to this. He served a 3 month prison sentence for under-age sex with a girl who lied about her age and naturally, lost everything. Hounded by the tabloids, relishing in humiliating him so that Martin has to confront his fall from grace on a daily basis like an exhibit in a freak show. He is the first to reach the top of Topper’s House one New Year’s Eve and dangle his feet over the ledge, drunk out of his mind contemplating throwing himself over the top. He

didn’t feel sad, just stupid and very angry with himself. As a contrast, Maureen was a tragic case. She had been denied any decent opportunity of happiness being saddled with a severely handicapped boy, an unmarried mother and a Catholic. She had struggled for 19 years merely existing. “It’s the one single thing that makes you die inside and, eventually wants to make you die on the outside too. Maureen was waiting her turn once Martin had made up his mind what he was going to do! He gives her 20 minutes to make up her mind and they change places. How bizarre! Before anything happens a crazy, drugged nutter roared at them charging like a Red Indian making a war-whopping sound about to throw herself over the ledge. She was the most likely one to do it on a whim to see what it felt like! Very unpredictable. How crazy is that? Martin rugby tackles her, kneeling on her and getting Maureen to sit on her. The black humour soon emerges when Martin explains that Jess can’t kill herself because she is too young. 18 to be precise. How old do you have to be to do it? Not why are you doing it? No sooner had they disarmed Jess then the Topper’s 4 group became complete with the arrival of a pizza man called JJ. He was just checking the place out. Absurd. All four wanted to take the Vincent Van Gogh route out of this world. They do at least communicate and decide to go down to the real world for a while.
They keep in touch, reassess their unhappy lives and meet up periodically giving each other wellneeded time to sort out their lives or end them! The film has just been released in the UK and the reviews have been critical. “Fantastically unconvincing.” Pierce Brosnan plays Martin and Toni Collette plays Maureen. pause for thought How often I’ve heard the assertion that Satan finds work for idle hands to do! And how true I’ve found that to be throughout my life! For of course, if I believe in God, then necessarily I also believe in the Devil; not perhaps with horns and a tail, but certainly one who will to try to persuade me, often with very plausible arguments, to follow him rather than God. So, as the third of the recorded temptations faced by Jesus during his time of preparation in the wilderness, Satan promised him all the kingdoms of the World if only he would bow down and worship him. What a temptation that must have been! A quick, easy fix that must have seemed, avoiding the humiliation, the pain and the suffering he knew lay ahead. Acknowledge the supreme power of Satan, and the World would be his oyster! But such action he knew, however tempting, would spell failure for his mission to himself take on all the wrongdoings of all humanity and in his death and subsequent resurrection to expunge any penalty we might otherwise have incurred. And so he dismissed those thoughts with the words “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him alone.’” And we, in our own way, so often face similar temptation. How much of the financial chaos of recent years was caused by people worshiping money, and the temptation to “Get rich quick at others’ expense”? How often do we find ourselves tempted to put self first, regardless of the hurt or damage that may cause another? So as the season of Lent passes through Holy Week to a celebration of Easter, rather than getting bogged down acknowledging our weaknesses, let’s remember with joy the message of the empty tomb, rejoicing that with the risen Lord we may be given strength to overcome even the most deadly of temptations. And in that spirit his words of “Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil”, may take on a whole new meaning. Earl Grey: the brew that could tackle heart disease A cup of Earl Grey tea can lower cholesterol and reduce the chances of heart disease, according to scientists. The beverage, much favoured in Downton Abbey, contains extracts of a fruit called bergamot which scientists believe is a superfood for the heart. And it could even be as effective as statins, the controversial wonder drugs used to control cholesterol but which can have side effects in patients.
The bergamot is a Mediterranean citrus fruit which gives Earl Grey the distinct taste and smell that has traditionally made it popular with the upper and middle classes. Now new research claims it contains enzymes known as HMGF (hydroxy methyl glutaryl flavonones) which can treat heart diseases as effectively as statins. Researchers from Italy’s University of Calabria for the Journal of Functional Foods used concentrations of HMGF on the proteins which cause heart disease and ‘bad’ cholesterol. They then compared the effects with that of statins used to treat the same proteins and found the bergomot extract with HMGF worked just as well. Not only did it reduce levels of LDL - so-called ‘bad cholesterol’ which leads to heart disease - but also increased HDL, which doctors call ‘good cholesterol’. Citrus foods have long been part of the famed ‘Mediterranean diet’ which has been hailed as one of the best ways to avoid heart disease - the biggest killer in the Western world. “Extract from bergamot - most commonly used in Earl Grey tea - reduced total cholesterol, and LDL levels but there was an increase in HDL levels (good cholesterol). “Therefore a daily supplement of bergamot fruit extract could be very effective for the treatment of high cholesterol.” Bergamot has long been used in traditional ‘folk’ medicines in the Mediterranean not only as a protection for the heart but also to treat wounds, inflammation and as an antiseptic.
What can the British Ambassador to Spain and the Mohican-wearing, Spanish it-chef of the moment have in common? Not much, it might appear, but Simon Manley (46) and David Muñoz (33) share several passions. Running, food and the United Kingdom are three of them, and the pair has just been filmed cooking the classic British dish of roast beef with Yorkshire pudding – with a distinctive, modern Spanish twist. In a new video on YouTube, David explains why he will soon be opening his first international restaurant in Britain. “I love it,” says David. “I lived in London for six years, and learnt almost everything there. London’s huge gastronomic diversity can be found nowhere else.” Simon Manley adds, “David’s decision to expand into the UK shows what a great place London is to start a new business or expand an existing one. What’s more, he’ll add even further to the incredible quality and variety of food which visitors to London can enjoy.” David recently received his third Michelin star, making him the youngest Spaniard to win the top Michelin ranking and the only holder of three stars in Madrid. His new restaurant, StreetXo London, will open this summer in Mayfair, bringing with it the culinary style that has made a table at his tiny

The 50+ SOLOs in open to ladies and gentlemen - it is a small group of people who are on their own for various reasons and meet a couple of times a month, normally at different restaurants, for a chat and a meal and sometimes other events. We do not charge fees of any kind - we just want people who perhaps are experiencing a ‘bad time’ or are completely on their own, to come along and enjoy other company. They are all very friendly people and some have been coming for quite a long time. On 12 April 1100 hours at SACKOS bar El Limonar for a change we are having a light Buffet lunch, and a couple of items so pens will be needed!! Nothing serious!! JUST COME ALONG There will hopefully also be a small Bring and Buy stall to raise funds - a chance to meet and mix. On 14 April 1330-1345 hrs a FRIENDLY 10 pin bowling match against TCF Church Torrevieja. The location is the 10 pin Bowling centre at the rear of Habeneras. Do not worry if you have only played a couple of times / or not at all.... again it is to meet people and have a laugh. 3 May and 24 May it is intended to lunch at 2 different restaurants in the area. COMMUNITY NEWS Guest Speaker at the Easter Conference at Torrevieja Evangelical church A MEDICAL doctor and biblical historian, Dr Adam Bradford, is the special guest speaker at an Easter conference organsed by the Torrevieja-based Evangelical church, the International Christian Assembly. Dr Bradford is the author of five books, including two New Testament commentaries. His work connecting Joseph, Jesus’ adoptive father, with Josephus Flavius’ description of the construction of the Second Temple by King Herod the Great has been translated into eight languages. Dr Bradford is a Jewish Christian. One of his books called The new Testament on Women, broke new ground in depicting the importance, from a Hebrew perspective, of women being God’s final creative act. He has ministered at Christian conferences in the UK, the USA and New Zealand. He is also a an NHS Commissioner for the London Borough of Southwark, and a sport doctor to Blackheath Rugby Club, the world’s oldest rugby club. He is married to Gloria, a sign language interpreter. He will be ministering at the church on April 17 (Maundy Thursday, April 18 (Good Friday, both at 7pm, and on April 20, Easter Sunday) at 11am. Don’t be depressed if you are not successful overnight; some humans are very slow learners, and have to be taught through progressive small steps and frequent repetition before mastering even a comparatively easy task. However, in the end, if you keep up their training, practice and hone your hypnotic skills, back them up with positive reinforcement, then eventually you will be successful. Jos had several pork bones, which she boiled up and stripped – apparently I can’t have the bones as they are because they are bad for me, she says. So I supervised the boiling and stripping (humans should always be supervised when preparing food to make sure that none gets wasted, and that any droppage is immediately cleaned up) and assured myself that the bowl containing

Next day she got the bowl out of the fridge, (under supervision, of course) to put half the contents into my dinner bowl for today’s dinner, saving the other half for tomorrow’s dinner. A Broken Line and a Restored Memory The recent coverage of the re-opening of the storm damaged railway main line at Dawlish, triggered some fond memories of my childhood when we would spend two glorious weeks each summer in Exmouth. My Dad’s factory had its annual closedown in August – as did many businesses in those days – and we would travel down to stay with my Aunt and Uncle in Devon either by train or Royal Blue coach. For a young boy who had rarely travelled in a car, both modes of getting to our destination was a major adventure, but given the choice there would have been no question, with the train journey emerging as the clear winner. More than half a century later, I can still remember those sun filled days on the beach with absolute clarity, burying my Dad and making sand castles, and looking across the Exe estuary to watch with fascination as the Paddington to Penzance train made its way along the coast from Dawlish Warren westwards. And always with a long trail of smoke streaming out behind it – because those were the days of steam - and the sound of its whistle, faint but clear across the water as it made its way to Teignmouth and beyond. With modern high-speed trains, the romance has largely gone from this method of transport but even so, travelling through

countryside that would normally remain hidden to the motorist, is still to me a pleasurable experience. It’s even more pleasant in Spain if you happen to be of a certain age, and are therefore qualified to purchase a railway Gold Card which entitles the holder to a substantial discount on all rail travel. For six euros a year, the holder can enjoy unlimited rail travel at 40% discount midweek and 25% at weekends. When planning a trip to Madrid and Toledo a couple of years ago therefore, we thought we would have some of this and treated ourselves to two first class tickets. I have to tell you, we will not be driving anywhere in this country from now on if it involves more than four hours in the car. Low cost, great comfort and meals and drinks included – it’s the only way to travel. But it’s a funny thing about the days of steam. Trains were noisy iron monsters wreathed in swirling smoke and steam, with the acrid smell of scorched grease pervading the air at railway stations. And yet the fascination with steam locomotives is something that leaves us dewy-eyed and reminiscing about curly edged buffet sandwiches and station hoardings advertising Skegness and Pears Soap. And I remember being enthralled by the photographs and stylized impressions of distant locations like Whitby, Blackpool and the Lake District that decorated the interior carriage walls. It was a thrilling experience for children and something to look forward to every summer holiday, and the dream of many a schoolboy was to be a train driver one day. Much later in my twenties, I made the return trip to my home town in Berkshire
from my new place of residence in Cornwall on several occasions, and the Paddington to Penzance Cornish Riviera Express had to be one of the most scenic railway journeys in the British Isles. Although my journey’s end in Cornwall was Liskeard, on one occasion I stayed on board till Penzance just to stretch out the experience. Actually I lie . . . I fell asleep and missed my stop. On one trip I found myself seated opposite an attractive middle-aged lady, who had boarded before me, possibly in Penzance or St Austell. She was obviously a professional person, because she seemed to be constantly attending to papers from a leather briefcase on the table between us. She looked very familiar, but try as I might I could not place her or remember where I had seen her. I was reading something typically Cornish at the time - a paperback copy of Frenchman’s Creek as it happened - but was conscious of the lady occasionally looking up and smiling sweetly, as if she also knew me. It was only as we were approaching Reading station that I felt I had to ask if we had met before. The lady laughed teasingly and gestured for me to hand her my book, and then turning to the inside back cover, pointed to the photograph. I had been sitting opposite Daphne du Maurier herself for the last three hours without knowing it. I was so utterly astounded, I left the London bound train without even thinking to ask her to autograph my book. How dumb was that I asked myself later. I subsequently learned that the famous authoress lived in Fowey, a charming small coastal town a few miles west of my own home in Looe.

The Submersible. The journey home.
After the amorous intervention of the giant squid, some believe his name was Sid, all believe he is a legend, the cargo of Remitroot was safely unloaded and sold. Standing on a lonely stretch of beach our erstwhile submariners had a problem. No one had thought about the return trip. Getting two septic tanks up a slimy and polluted waterway without been seen is one of those questions that at some time or other have vexed most people. Manuela suggested abandoning the craft and working their way overland back to Alqueria. This was not a popular idea as no one else had Manuela’s assets, besides the submersible was expensive and apart from the lustful attentions of the squid the plan had actually worked. A high level discussion followed. If there is one thing an Alquerian excels at, it is ingenuity and if that ingenuity can line one’s own pockets then it knows no bounds. Investing some of the revenue from the Remitroot sale the crew put their newly conceived plan into action. By searching the scrapyards of Almería they collected an array of miscellaneous metal-work and other junk which they welded, glued and tied to the septic tanks of the submersible. Their attempts to personify the submersible met with limited success. Something resembling a human
being did however emerge. Manuela’s contribution had to be scrapped it was grossly out of scale and in thoroughly bad taste. The septic tanks made the thing look pregnant but it did look reasonably human. Coming from Alqueria the term ‘reasonably human´ has a wide scope of course. There was no attempt to make sense of the creation. When they were happy the whole masterpiece was liberally covered in bronze paint. All that was now necessary was to send a message to the worthies of Alqueria. It simply stated that because of the volatility of the Euro against the Alquerian Raro and the situation in the Ukraine they had been paid in kind. A sculpture by the world renown Spanish artist Damiano Hirstado entitled Veracity. The crew could then pocket the proceeds from the Remitroot sale. The journey upstream along the Río Verde was untroubled, the Spanish authorities simply wanted the hideous piece of metalwork out of their territory as soon as feasibly possible. The arrival of the ‘sculpture’ in Alqueria however was met with universal applause. It was taken from the water and erected in the village square, it’s a pity they didn’t have a harbour-wall to put it on. Only Loco Paco reckoned the statue to be grotesque but then Paco’s sanity is in question after all.

People of all nationalities living locally have no shortage of the above. There are numerous choirs and groups offering a plethora of songs and music in a variety of styles. Further, this area is rich in auditoriums and cultural centres in which performances are given. Saturday March 29th was no exception with more than one musical concert on offer. For those who chose the Palacio de Musica a visiting Danish Chamber Choir of over 20 singers, Lyngby Kammerkor sang songs a cappella (without accompaniment) from the Nordic countries. A Chamber Choir is the equivalent of an instrument ensemble but uses voices, so there are often many different parts at once. Quite a FEAT – well done Lyngby! Then in complete contrast, Crescendo International Choir took to the stage and whisked the audience to the Caribbean with ‘Begin the Beguine’.
“Play a Simple Melody” has a melody running against a second melody which the 7 men choristers and 27 ladies handled expertly. A group of songs made famous by Frank Sinatra and Glenn Miller were cheered by an appreciative audience. Finally, train journey to Chattanooga, Tennessee took Crescendo to their destination in song. Joined by Lyngby Choir, both choirs then sang in the Spanish Language “Sin Ti”. The accompanist, Tony Guillen made the piano literally talk. A line in the final song summed up the concert – the sounding ‘bravos’ proof enough that the audience agreed – ‘Joyful music leads us sunward in the triumph song of life’. Thank you for that message Irene Oliva, (Musical Director of Crescendo). Cruz Roja were the grateful recipients of a retiring collection.

SGA (Senile Golfers Association, Finland) TMGS Match Report
SMGS VISIT VILLAMARTIN This busy time of the year sees our turnout swelling into the 40’s. It’s a clear indication that if you want a game with the friendliest society in the area, then get your name on the booking list very sharpish. This week saw our Stableford competition interspersed with 3 matchplay games, all in the singles KO comp’, which meant saying au revoir to 3 of our well fancied players. Richard Wale eliminated Norman Padmore 6 & 5, Tony Smale beat Lee George 7 & 5 and the tussle of the day between Capt Steve & H’cap sec Barry ended with Steve just getting the better of Baz & nicking the game 1 up on the final hole! Well done to all the victors with a pat on the back for the gallant losers. The prize for best visitor of the day went to Mike Stone who came in with 26 points. NTP’s on the par 3’s were awarded to Phil de Lacy (6), Shay Cunningham (9 & 17) and John Osborne (13). NTP’s on the 3 par 4’s
went to Tony Smale, Phil de Lacy & Glen Rapley. Bronze division’s top 5 in ascending order were Glen Rapley (33), Hayden Williams (35 C/B), Keith Wraithmell (35 C/B), Ellen Drakesmith (37) & a magnificent 40 pts put Mick Roscoe in 1st again. Silver’s top 5 were Keith Wickham (32 C/B), Mike Jordan (32 C/B), Phil Tomlinson (32 C/B), Phil de Lacy (35) & Capt Steve Davis in top spot with his 38. 45 players took part in the April Monthly Medal/ Founders Cup on Thursday 3 April 2014 at our home course of La Marquesa. It rained heavily last night however although there were some puddles on the paths, the course coped very well and was surprisingly dry. It must be my week for playing with players on top form as I played with Pam on Tuesday, who won with a magnificent 42 points. Today I played with Chris who won the medal and
Founders Cup with a great nett score of 69. Always the bridesmaid and never the bride, that’s me. Well done – girl power was definitely showing this week. A special thank you to Paul and all his staff for the lovely free cocktails to celebrate the opening of the cocktail bar. We must now have a clubhouse that is among the best on the Costa Blanca. Every year the SGA (Senile Golfers Association) from Finland make a tour to the Costa Blanca to play an annual event, usually in the autumn. This year after course closures in Finland of up to 4 months they decided upon a spring trip and as usual this was organised by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services and the event was a three day tournament played between 29th31st March 2014 and the summary of each day was as follows: Day 1 – La Serena Anyone that has played La Serena will understand the difficulties of playing this course particularly on a windy day and after 4 months without practise and it showed today in the scores. Kari Jaaskelainen lead the way with an excellent 35 points followed home by Pekka Sandholm with a creditable 32 points but the winner was the golf course in the sales of ‘lake’ balls for the rest of the trip Day 2 – Altorreal This was a new course for many of the players and although the sun was shining there was again a high wind and some of the greens had received some repair work and were sanded in places. Jaana Salmi was the winner on the day with 33 points closely followed by Lea Nuppola on 32 points who
moved into the lead for the overall first place prize.

Day 3 – Alenda Superb weather for the final day and Alenda was in excellent condition and with plenty of sunshine, no wind and fast greens the day was enjoyed by all. Lea Nuppola stamped her authority on the event on the final day with a winning and consistent 33 points followed home by fellow lady golfer Meiju Linnaoksa with 32 points The overall winner of the three day event was Lea Nuppola with a superb 95 points with Meiju Linnaokas in 2nd place with 83.5 points and Seppo Lamberg was the best placed ‘male’ player with the same 83.5 points The group will return to the region later in the year but return home for now happy to have finally played some golf but licking golfing wounds as the prolonged period without golf practice took it’s toll on some of the players However good food and plenty of drink erased some of these memories quickly. Las Ramblas, 2nd April 2014 One this day in history in 1801, Admiral Horatio Nelson defied an order to withdraw and went on to destroy the Danish fleet and in 1977, probably the greatest steeplechaser of all time, Red Rum, won the Grand National for the 3rd time. Today at the Marmite course we had our 2 Ball Texas Scramble and 15 teams battled it out on a nice warm but cloudy day and it must be said that the course was in very good condition but there were stories of many putts missed. 3 of the 4 NTP’s were claimed and their reward was a sleeve of TMGS golf balls which went to Jenny Morris, Roger Nilsen and Ian Parkinson who will never again shout out to anyone “On me head son” after his playing partner Les Wilton, tried to give Parky a new parting with a sand wedge. Don’t worry readers, Les’s sand wedge is in good working order and wasn’t bent out of shape.
The Best Visitors team were husband and wife team Mr and Mrs Lee with a net 73.2 and in the main competition saw Steve Higgins and Paul Fairclough take 3rd place with 74.4, 3 shots behind the runners-up of Teora Roed and John Trehy’s with a reasonable 71.4 but they were a long way back from the winners on the day, Team Campoamor consisting of Joe Dean and Arne Hansson who came in with a very good net score of 67.8. La Marina Golf Society Capt. v V-Capt Trophy Thursday morning dawned fair with both men assessing their respective teams to decide which pairs could best help them to win the inaugaral Capt. versus Vice -Capt. Trophy. Played on a best hole score basis in a matchplay format, an extremely competitive tournament ensued ,with many cries of anguish and triumph ringing around the course. Typically the Captain’s assessment of the” unlucky” loss of his match to an excellent approach shot by the President on the 18th could still be heard well into the evening. In the end, everybody seemed to enjoy the format ,and Vice -Capt. Graham Marriner accepted the Trophy with suitable modesty having emerged the winner by 8 matches to 6. ALFIE’S GOLF SOCIETY Thursday, 27 March 2014 – Saurines de la Torre The last Thursday of March saw Alfies Golf Society at Saurines de la Torre for the first of two trips this year. No rain forecast but the wind promised to make scoring difficult on the day. Our day out didn’t start
ideally, in fact only the day before we were informed that our tee times had been moved forward 17 minutes which meant our secretary had to spend a great deal of time via phone & email to let everyone know. On arrival we were informed that everyone playing had to fill in a form with details of nationality, email address etc. And
Tuesday Night Trios Ten Pin Bowling League Week Twenty-Five played 1st April 2014 After a week of no bowling teams got back to business, with week two of three in their attempts to win tickets for the Easter Scramble, kindly sponsored by Right Move Insurance of Quesada and La Zenia. Los Bandidos led the way with six tickets and with Roger Phipps’ 631 high handicap series of the season, they completed a comprehensive 8 – 0 defeat of Cornish Pride. Paul Kundiss of Lucky Strike was one of two bowlers who grabbed three tickets on the night and, with his ‘teammate’ (I use this word loosely) Norman Wylie getting two, LS gained a valuable 6 – 2 victory over Caballo Negro. Eija Suomi of CN swept the Ladies individual weekly scores, including a handicap game of 219 and a 566 h/c series, but this wasn’t enough to prevent a team defeat. You have to feel sorry for Olli Leppanen of Team Finland as, with three tickets and all the male high scores for the night, you would have thought TF would be to strong for Bar Mosquitos. How wrong could you be, the ‘happy Bs’ from BM claimed four tickets and a very good 6 – 2 victory. Dave Haynes of BM rolling a steady 610 h/c series. The Mixers bounced back from a defeat last week with a narrow 6 – 2 win over Juans’ Warriors. After their big haul of tickets and an 8 – 0 win two weeks
then we were told that we had to tee off on the 10th. Not ideal when all our scorecards had been prepared in advance and one of the nearest pin prizes was on the 10th ! Add to this a plague of wasps on the tee on arrival, hence the reason for the not-so-perfectstart to the day... Nevertheless 27 members eventually all got off and taking into account the blustery conditions scoring was good with more than a third of the field scoring more than 30 stableford points. Nearest the pins on 10 & 18 went to Mike Smith and Ian Connell, with the longest drive prize on 16 going to Geoff Hanson. Gary McGregor took 2nd place with 36 points but the winner on the day was, for the second time on the bounce, George Rankine with an excellent 39 points. Congratulations

ago, The Dreamers went into their match against Los Lobos hoping to grab more tickets and more points. They managed one of the two, only claiming one ticket but bagging a 6 – 2 win and thus, moving themselves off the bottom of the league. I have to say that Irene Lakin of LL did predict this, sorry Irene. Split Happens moved to the top of the league after defeating Crazy Pinz 6 – 2 but, it could have been all 8 points, had they not lost the third game by one pin. The ‘in form team’ of the league, Splash, inflicted another defeat on an out of sorts Hall y Day. It was Manuel Martins ability to strike out in the first two games, that helped his team win 6 – 2. Even Tony Rays’ 609 h/c series, couldn’t help HyD on the night.
Alenda - 2.04.14 Alenda is such a nice course, and so thought the 38 members and guests who journeyed there on Wednesday. Unusually for a Wednesday, Boreas the God of Wind decided to stay in bed for a change so we had quite a still day to start with but warm and hazy. We had a strong field with some members playing for the first time this year in Spain. The course was in good condition for this time of the year and it was obvious that a lot of hard work had been done to the course over the winter, but unfortunately this didn’t make it any easier to play.
