Cucaracha Girls Make A Splash Fundraising continues apace for the film The Cucaracha Club, our very own community project here on the Costa Blanca. Some of the female cast volunteered to be ice bucketed in a wet t shirt challenge on the beach front at Playa Flamenca last weekend. Cheered on by family, friends and members of the public the brave girls took a drenching for the sake of The Cucaracha Club ! Around 500€ was raised. Another brave soul, Baz from AliandBrians Sports Bar at Playa Flamenca offerd 200€ if he could get wet ! Well it was rude to refuse, so on Sunday evening the cast duly obliged. After an evening of excellent entertainment with the lovely Chloe Leigh, including other donations a total of 276€ was raised. Thanks Baz ! and for his efforts he will have a walk

You helped us when we appealed last year, please help us again. We are looking for donations of clothes, bric-a-brac, bedding, and small furniture, in fact anything that you don’t want or need, for our shops in Torreveija and Los Montesinos. We are finding it very hard to cover all our costs and to make sure our beneficiaries are receiving the excellent care they are used to. We can collect anything, just call 966 786 887

Vivace Classical Choir

ort Well readers you will be reading this heading into October …….. Three months to Christmas ! And at the time of writing – mid September - the temperatures are as hot as August if not hotter (certainly more humid !) ……. September is usually a very pleasant month with mid twenty temperatures and a lovely warm sea from the summer but this one is HOT ……. I understand that some schools having just gone back from the summer holidays have closed as its just to hot to teach / learn !!!! Is this the sign of a Gotta Fria ? (several days of severe rain) – a weather phenonomen occurring every few years when the temperatures are just right …… we have not had one for some years so maybe its on the way …… anyone who has not witnessed on all I can say is that umbrella are not much use !!! Just a quick thank you and recommendation for “Murcia Rafting” – adverts all over including The Chronicle. Great half day out , best euro 20.00 ever spent ……. Maybe not the adrenalin rush of a theme park but good honest FUN …. Well recommended. For regular readers all is well in the Rainbow camp …… Mums, dogs, other animals and mostly the garden waiting for a respite from the heat ! TV News …… I have had lots of questions from the “bar talk” going around “can we get UK TV on a small dish from another satellite ?” ……. Well the answer is yes you can at the moment but not for long. There is a satellite used – over in the west (as opposed to the one we use in the east) – that supplies many of the ground transmission stations in the UK for FREEVIEW. Now these signals are quite strong in Spain and it is possible to decode them and watch them HOWEVER the word in the industry is that they are going to use a new coding system and it will be impossible to watch them with “normal cheaper end” boxes. That’s why any reputable installer will not offer you this option …… If you are offered cheap UK TV on a small satellite dish just don’t waste your money ! The other question we are often asked is “can I get catch up TV ?” ……This is where you can watch anything that has been on the last 7 or so days and called BBCiplayer, ITVplayer, 4OD and others. Well like many things the answer is yes and no ! These services are delivered down the internet – NOT

as your satellite TV is from a satellite system. You will need a UK smart TV or a UK smart adaptor box and a UK IPaddress. If you just plug your smart devise into a Spanish internet you will have a Spanish IPaddress and the service provider will see this and block your viewing ……… these services are only intended for UK viewing even though we live in the European Community – but that is a whole new story for another newsletter. Now you can get round this by “renting” a UK IPaddress either from your internet provider or a separate independent VPN provider …… www.tazoo.tv is as good as any. To watch these services successfully you will need about 2.5MBs internet speed with VERY consistent supply and the VPN UK IPaddress system will slow your internet down so in reality about 3.5Mbs is needed. The consistency factor is often the problem in Spain but if you want to watch these services it is possible …… contact us for more information. SKY do have a way round the unreliable slow internet issue ……. In their system they download the programme you want to watch to the digibox hard drive ……. Now if you have super fast internet a half hour programme may take just a few minutes to download and then watch but the beauty is if your internet is very slow it may well take two hours to download the half hour programme but it is then all “sorted” on the hard drive to watch perfectly ! You will need a SKY HD box and a SKY contract but the system does work well for poor / slow internet connections. The other way to watch catch up TV is with our pure internet TV which has its own catch up service for most channels ….. Again more details from us. Well that’s it for this month …… more next ….. article sponsored by Alan from Rainbow Satellites ………… contact me for all your questions on TV in Spain ………… rainbowsats@ gmail.com or (0034) 686 358 475.

Vivace Classical Choir completed a very successful 2013/4 season in April, with three charity performances of Handel’s “Messiah”: Firstly in San Miguel de Salinas, then in La Siesta Church, and finally a performance in the wonderful church of the Colegio de Santo Domingo in Orihuela – see photograph. Musical Director Tom Pargeter is delighted to report that they have been invited to return to this magnificent venue in March 2015. Everything is now ready to start the new season, when the main work to be performed will be Mozart’s

Requiem, another glorious oratorio. Rehearsals start on Thursday 9th October at 7.15 in the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel de Salinas. The Requiem will be performed in March 2015, and there will also be an evening of Christmas music to be presented at the beginning of December, before the Christmas break. New singers in all voice sections will be welcome, and any information can be got from Tom himself, by tomandkaty@tpargeter. email to com, or by phoning Douglas Brown on 659 616 356.

led the team home in a time of 26.01 for first place in the VETERANA C category. She was joined on the podium by Helen Mitford and Helen McIlwaine to complete a clean sweep for the club. Barbara Bradbury, Shirley Crandon, Susan Pullan, Karen Pemberton, Julia Rushton, Michelle Edwards and Frauke Gerlach all ran creditably to make this an excellent start to the season. Running Wild only had three representatives in the 10K race with Gerard McGranaghan leading the team home in an excellent time of 40.10 for 11th place overall. He was followed home by Heather Gould and Lin Gossage with the latter finishing second in the VETERANA C category. After the main races, attention turned to the track and to our younger members. Darcy McGranaghan took part in the 300 metres and her elder sister, Kyra, in the 700 metres and both did themselves, parents and club proud.

Small things that get forgotten

Most people find that there are small things that they didn’t think about until after the builders had finished construction. Here are some, in no particular order, that they wish they would have added into their build: Charging plugs in the kitchen for items that may end up living there. Full size broom cupboard to hide all the cleaning items away from sight. Prewired security system Run wire and prepare roof for future solar panels. Run conduit under your driveway just in case you need to run wiring or plumbing in the future. Run a 2” pvc pipe from ground floor up to second floor, for any future wiring.

Put charging plugs in closets for charging a cordless vacuum. Plan a specific place for your dog and/or cat food, treats, and bowls. Make sure you have enough space to hang long clothes. Enough plugs in the bathroom/ bedroom. You need more than you ever imagined! Inside switch for your outside lights. An inside light for your bathroom/ medical cabinet. Recess your fridge. If you have 2 doors into the same room, make sure you have a light switch for that room at each door. Storage for Christmas tree decorations! Heated towel racks. Pre wire a motion sensor for selected exterior lights. Adjustable shelves in cupboards. Multiple taps for outside. Master switch in the master bedroom that controls all exterior lights (in case you hear something in the night) A light switch at the head of your bed so you can turn out the light once you are in bed. Power outage flashlights that plug into an outlet to keep charged. Place them in strategic places for use in power cuts. Make copies of all product manuals prior to installation of equipment, finishes and fixtures. Add a mosquito system. It’s a system of tubes and pipes installed in your walls that automatically mists mosquito spray along the outside perimeter of your house and wherever else you choose to put a spray pump. Apparently the spray can help combat other flying insects such as wasps and flies. Here are a couple of links about the system: http://www. mistaway.com/watch-the-mistaway-video.html and

JAGUARS

La Cova host’s the Big Cats

Written by Eric Arnold Sunday 28th S e p t e m b e r, yet another terrific day out with the members of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club in Spain. On a somewhat overcast day but thankfully rain free, this time we took the members to a fabulous little restaurant in El Campello. Restaurant La Cova, on the cliff top overlooking the harbour of El Campello with wonderful views over the harbour and along the beach. A perfect setting to show off 22 samples of Jaguar engineering perfection. Restaurant La Cova is a well known and very popular restaurant, especially with expats. The food is fabulous and great value for money. On top of that, stunning views while you partake in a leisurely lunch. La Cova’s menu is typically English fare with a slight Spanish twist. We chose the standard Sunday lunch. A choice from three starters, quiche, prawn cocktail or pate, followed by soup, then a choice of a roast dinner, beef, pork or turkey or sea

bream for the fish lovers. A choice of dessert’s, and coffee. Wine beer and water are included. Brilliant value for 20.00 Euros a head. I can highly recommend it. Parking is a little tight in the small car park and The Big Cats pretty well filled the spaces available. A nice surprise was a stunning example of the new Jaguar F Type Convertible, 100,000.00 Euros worth of incredible Super Car, kindly brought along by Javier from Mundicar in Alicante. “I want one”. All of our members cars are beautiful but this meeting brought out some exceptional examples of these stunning cars. Some of the old favourites were there as usual, David Shea and his fabulous gold XJS Convertible. David Sleap our Vice President brought along his newly acquired XKR Silverstone Convertible, an exceptional example of this rare limited edition Jaguar. More examples of XJS’s, XK8’s, XKR’s XJ’s, X Types, XF’s and a new XJ, perfection on four

wheels, “The Guvnors” XK8 Convertible. completed the collection this time. A total of 22 cars and 58 people, a really good turnout considering the weather could have been better. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that attended the meeting, especially all the new members, and of course a big thank you to Ian and Uschi McMenemy for organising the event. We have a few announcements to make, first the easy one, the next meeting will be on Saturday and Sunday, 18th & 19th October when some lucky club members are taking part in a Magical Mystery Tour. This event is fully booked. On Sunday 16th November, the meeting will be at Restaurant La Torreta, near Elda, we will be hosting a presentation from Pelicer and Heredia, a team of renowned lawyers, the presentation will cover all things legal relating to vehicles in Spain. This is always a very

martinez de la casa architects

This new law which became applicable on the 20th August of this year, greatly affects the international community in Alicante as until now, any building, extension or pool could be legalised or it’s description updated in the Title Deeds and afterwards registered in the Land Registry once it was 4 years old (with the exception of protected / special areas / inhabilitating participation quotas in Deeds). The only document needed was an Antiquity Certificate stating the building was over 4 years old. FROM NOW ON THIS PERIOD HAS EXTENDED TO 15 YEARS. Fortunately many of the Land Registries will still register (and thereby legalise) all extensions, pools or buildings done within a minimum of four years before this new law was established. Please note EVERY LAND REGISTRY NOW HAS DIFFERENT CRITERIAS SO IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ENQUIRE AT YOUR ASSIGNED LAND REGISTRY BEFORE TRYING TO LEGALISE OR UPDATE AN EXTENSION THAT WAS DONE WITHOUT THE CORRECT LICENSE. Therefore, all extensions made in LESS THAN 4 years BEFORE May 2014 will not be able to be registered until 15 years old. The rest of the process remains the same; needing an Antiquity Certificate done by an architect, at the Notary to update the Title Deeds (Escritura) with any alterations introduced to the property, such as pools or

extensions done with or without a license. In the case of having done an extension or pool without a license, the Antiquity Certificate is also very useful to guard against possible sanctions and is highly recommended to avoid putting off potential buyers due to the existence of unregistered buildings even if done with a license. Martinez de la Casa Architects offers (as a FREE service) to enquire on your behalf at the Land Registry to check if registration is allowed with regards to this new law. Please simply call us on: 665 810 411 telling us your hometown, type of extension and year of construction*, and we provide you with an answer within 72 working hours if registration in your case is possible within the new law. *Only for buildings done 4 years before May 2014. If for your peace of mind you then wish to have your Antiquity Certificate issued, Martinez de la Casa Architects will arrange an appointment to survey the pool/extension requiring only your NIE and current Title Deeds. Later using satelitte images and software we check the age of the pool/extension (pictured is an example used in the process for Antiquity Certification) and combine this with the measurements and documentation taken during our on-site visit. The Antiquity Certificate is stamped by the Official College of Architects and delivered within 7-10 days. The applicant can then

The “pride of big cats” will meet at Parador Siguenza, a 12th century castle in the north of Spain, a very special event that should not be missed. Currently we are expecting 132 people and 62 beautiful Jaguars. We only have a very few places left. The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club is the largest of the worlds Jaguar Clubs, apart from joining in the fun at the meetings, members also benefit from a glossy 140 page A4 monthly magazine, Jaguar spares department and a technical advice service second to none. If you live in Spain and own a Jaguar you should be a member of The Jaguar Enthusiasts Club. The JEC in Spain is organised by Eric Arnold, Club President and Ian McMenemy, Events Director. Eric can be contacted by email at jaguarspain@outlook. com or by phone on 609931647 or alternatively check out www. jec-spain.es or the JEC main web site www.jec.org.uk. either update and register the Title Deeds, or wait for change of Property Titleholder’s at the Notary. The price of a Pool Antiquity Certificate is 250€+IVA and for Extensions Antiquity Certificate 353€+IVA. The only condition in Alicante is that the building/pool to certify was built 4 years before the 20th August 2014, or 15 years old (new law) depending on each Land Registry. Standing up straight could help improve your job prospects. ‘People who slump look like they’re ashamed to take up space,’ says presentation and posture coach Michele Paradise, who works with professional models to help improve their posture. ‘However, if you stand tall and straight and look confident, people will respond positively, making you feel better about yourself and in turn increase the likelihood that you will get a positive response.’ Her advice is backed up by research: a US study found that powerful posture makes people think and act more powerfully. So even if you’re not the boss, stand like you are and you’ll command respect. Your concentration If you’re finding it difficult to focus, your posture could be to blame. That’s because although it only accounts for two per cent of your bodyweight, your brain uses 20 per cent of your oxygen to do its job properly. Since poor posture can make it

Research has found that maintaining an unnatural position (ie, slumping) actually uses 60 to 70 per cent more energy than keeping your body in proper alignment. ‘All this extra effort makes you tired and increases the likelihood of depression and illness,’ explains Ian Horseman, a chiropractor and postural specialist. This may be due to the link between the body’s position and what consultant psychologist Ingrid Collins terms our ‘psychological posture’.

Your health

Poor posture is an obvious cause of lower back problems and shoulder and neck pain but it might also be at the root of sluggish digestion and severe headaches. According to a study published in the journal Headache, people whose posture made their heads jut forward had more frequent, longer and severe headaches than people with a correct posture. This finding doesn’t surprise Charles Hunt of the British School of Osteopathy, who says that, ‘because your body’s usually fighting on lots of different fronts, work, stress, environment, if it’s working harder to maintain a poor posture, you could start to feel symptoms.’

Your looks

‘The most ageing thing in a person is bad posture,’ says Michele Paradise. ‘It projects a wordless message about a person’s age and health.’ There’s proof, too. When researchers at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, US, asked people to rate the appearance of two women in a series of pictures, in the pictures of them standing up straight, they were consistently judged Do you suffer from mobility problems, to be younger and more breathlessness/pain or falls/stumbles? attractive than in those of them slumping. Written by Michael Burke RHAD MSHAA of Digital Hearing, Quesada As well as the standard hearing aids we discussed in our last two Hearing Columns, there are a variety of non-standard aids to suit different circumstances. The nonconventional-aid wearer may be motivated either by the desire to hide the fact that they are wearing aids or by another existing handicap that prevents them from wearing aids (eg visual impairment, dexterity problems, skin conditions). The best known are the spectacle aids. These are hearing aids built into spectacle arms. They come in two main types: conductive loss aids and sensorineural loss aids. The conductive loss aids are for people who have suffered damage to the outer or middle ear and are severely deaf. The hearing aid is built into the spectacle arms, which are spring-loaded and clamp themselves to the sides of the head and play the sound through the bone. The sensorineural loss spectacle aids are for people with inner hair cell damage. Again the aids have been built into the arms of the spectacles but a small thin discreet wire with a receiver on the end of it goes from the spectacle arm into the ear and delivers hearing in this way. The downsides of both these aids are: (a) the arms are very ‘chunky’ and (b) when you take your glasses off you lose your hearing as well. Some people have to suffer loss of sight as well as hearing. For the blind/visually impaired with a hearing problem quite often it is the simple things like changing the battery or cleaning the aids that causes difficulties. There are specially

adapted self-recharging in-the-ear aids that do not require cleaning and that sit in a box overnight and recharge themselves so never need a battery change or a waxtrap change – wonderful for those with sight or dexterity problems. Other people may suffer from skin complaints that standard hearing aids exacerbate. There are a range of special hypoallergenic aids (some even goldcoated) that can help eliminate these problems. Many people are very self-conscious about wearing hearing aids, especially children and teenagers. This problem can be tackled either by making the aids very small so they cannot be seen or more visible but made to look like something else entirely. Some of the people walking down the street with ipods, mobile phone receivers, spectacles or large earrings to name but a few things are actually wearing hearing aids and nobody knows! SOLTIMES OCTOBER 2014

braben’s blog... Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last week we looked at the very first program that anyone ever writes “Hello World” which was created by Brian Kernighan (in the computing world, he is known as a pioneer of programming) in 1974 at Bell Laboratories. I would suspect that most readers would think that a program is a single, enormous list of instructions. Would it surprise you to hear that since the earliest days, program designers have been pushing forward the idea of structured programming, and yes, they do actually create designs within programs. It is true that the earliest ‘programs’ were actually simple scripts, very much like a simple list! Lets look at a simple example of a simple program. The phone rings, you pick up the phone, talk and put it back. Does it get any simpler? Probably not, but, as with all things, it can and usually does get a lot more complicated. Lets start again! 1. The phone rings; Question: Where is it, How do you find it, (Do you really want to?) 2. You pick up the phone; Question is it a normal home phone or a complicated mobile with sliding screens and DoDads (Real word – I think?), 3. Depending on the answer to the last question – answer the phone and finally put it back on the rest or turn it off (more sliding, tapping and complication). One of the questions set while I was doing my teaching degree was “Describe all the processes in making a cup of tea”. I was lucky, coming from a computing background and used to breaking down complex problems into manageable parts, I did rather better than the other members of my class (I wouldn’t tell the story else) but still missed out nearly half the processes! Even after being given clues as to what we have missed and then given the task of writing down as many of the processes, in logical order, as possible, we all still missed one or two (and some missed the point of the exercise!). Programming languages have become more complicated and (personal view only) not always better for the added complication. BASIC (standard DOS programming language – back in the day of the dinosaurs) was simple but worked, PASCAL forces you to think about what you are doing, create structures and only

then, add advanced techniques like recursive function calling. All this is easily within the understanding of anyone that wants to know how to program. C (and that is really it’s name – it’s predecessors were A – no surprise there, BCPL – shorted to B and then, you guessed it – C) was designed as a general purpose, cross platform, portable language with the power of ASSEMBLER and the readability of English(ish). Windows programming is far more complex than DOS programming, Object Oriented Programming (OOP) has many more rules and tweaks than ordinary programming languages and anything by Microsoft requires an IQ of 180 to start to understand it (my IQ is only 135, 100 is average, 110 is smart,180 is genius, so I haven’t a prayer!). I have found a scripting language with many of the features of a true structures programming language, that works with and in Windows (xp, 7 and 8.x and maybe 9 when it gets here), and is reasonably easy to learn and use. It also make standalone programs (works without needing anything else from Windows). I have just completed a simple program to calculate the cost of hiring my services that uses Windows, message and input boxes and labels – all of which has been out of my comfort with any of the Microsoft Windows Programming languages that I have tried. For the record this free (Yes I know, Trev’s on about free again) package is called “AutoIt” and has a gentle learning curve rather than the Microsoft Wall. I’m I saying “Go Get It!” No. Because it’s only use is for programmers or enthusiastic hobbyist’s who want to write the odd routine for their own purposes. My next project is the complete re-write of the PIRdA database program for holding information about computer and accessories that have been donated to PIRdA, what is done to them and where they are re-donated too. That should keep me out of trouble for a week or two :-) I have “Skype” (read ‘free calls’), phone and email contact details but for now I’m now off to Jack’s Bar in Albox for my Friday afternoon computer clinic! See you there or ring me if your need is more urgent.

A history of Moorish Spain (part 2) The green and white flag of modern Andalucía dates from 756AD and Abder-Rahman; before the battle he won against Al-Fihri to take the prize of Cordoba and therefore Al-Andalus his army had not prepared a flag. So a green turban was hastily wrapped around a white spear with the green signifying hope and the white peace. Abd-er-Rahman became Emir of AlAndalus and started construction of the Mezquita around 785AD. According to legend he proclaimed “Let us build a Mosque which will surpass that of Bagdad, that of Damascus, and that of Jerusalem, which shall be the greatest temple of Islam and become the Mecca of the Occident.” The mosque was similar in style to the great mosque of Damascus, the city where Abd-er-Rahman had escaped from 30 years previously. Christian slaves constructed the mosque using stones from razed churches; the Emir also got stuck in, working for an hour

Notsosmartphone Users !

Alright, it’s getting out of hand now! Oh no, I sound like a teacher, but it’s true, it has got ridiculous. Look, I know that there are some people who simply can’t function without their mobile phones and to a point, I can see what they mean. But really, a mobile phone lane? Apparently in Chongqing City in China, there are so many people bouncing off each other whilst staring intently at their phones rather than where they should be going, that they’ve introduced this cell phone, go-slow, lane so that they can stop doing their impressions of the Three Stooges and reach their destination without mild concussion. It isn’t a great success yet. Most of the phone users“smartphone zombies” apparently is the collective noun for them-are too taken up with the earth-shatteringly important texts they’re receiving that they don’t even notice the markings on the pavement and so carry on, weaving all over the place! But don’t you think that it has reached silly time now with new technology? I don’t mean the technology itself, but the affect it has on some people. Apart from go slow lanes for phone users, I was fascinated to see that queues of people had been forming outside “Apple” shops, days before the new “iPhone something or other” was released last week. Now leaving aside the merits, or not, of having to be the first to own such a thing-queuing for days so you beat the next person by 5.8 seconds-the very fact that some people are daft enough to sleep outside a shop to do this is, as far as I can see, mind blowingly insane. It seems to me that those who do this are a little like people who dress up as their favourite sci fi character or dye their hair to match their pop heroes. In other words, they are the types to give a wide berth to if you ever come across one. And as if to confirm this I was stunned into silence when I read that there was a, perhaps otherwise intelligent, chap in Australia who had successfully waited for days outside the Apple shop in Perth to buy the new phone. He left the store and, with trembling hands, opened the box to reveal the brand new, shiny, expensive, object of his desire. Then he dropped it! A extraordinarily wide berth is required I think. a day. The work continued for nearly 300 years with each subsequent ruler adding further to the building. In 788AD Hisham the First succeeded as Emir; born in Cordoba he called for Jihad and Moslems flocked from abroad (sound familiar? IS?) In 793AD with his new army he waged war against the far northern enclave of the Kingdom of Asturias where Christians had flocked to after the initial Moorish invasion around 720AD. He won that battle but was then defeated by the Frankish King William the First when he attacked the County of Toulouse in what is now France. He died in 796AD. Al-Hakam the First was Emir from 796822AD and founded the first university in Cordoba. This was an enlightened time and both Jews and Christians were given more religious freedom in Al Andalus than anywhere else in the world. The price was a special tax or Jizya meaning people of the book. The alternative was to convert to Islam or

if one preferred; execution (familiar again?). Moslems were allowed to marry Christians with their offspring called Muwallad nowadays known as Mulatto. During the period 807-811AD Emir Al-Hakam had many victories in the north against the Frankish Christian King Charlemagne and took Gascony in 809AD. Charlemagne had the title Emperor of the Romans given to him by Pope Leo the Third after quelling a rebellion against the Pope in Rome in 800AD. Charlemagne was also a learned man and set up the first ever Christian library. Paradoxically the two leaders fought against each other whilst both encouraging spiritual and intellectual enlightenment. They did however forge a peace treaty in 816AD. Al-Hakam earned the title Al-Muzaffar meaning great warrior. There were rebellions in Al-Andalus during this whole period; one in Toledo in 800AD meant 300 prominent people were put to death. The largest revolt was by Moslem clerics in Cordoba which

was crushed around 817-818AD with AlHakam ordering 300 people to be crucified on the banks of what was then called al-wādi al-kabīr ‘The Great River’. We now know it as the Guadalquivir. 800 survivors were expelled with some going to Fez where they set up the Andalucían quarter which can still be seen today and others fled to Alexandria. In 827AD they moved again to Crete where they set up an emirate which survived until the beginning of the Byzantine reconquest in 961AD. Al-Hakam has two reputations historically, first as a ruthless leader but also that of someone who used diplomacy and reconciliation when it was in Al-Andalus’ best interests to do so. He extended Moslem rule across Spain and also cleverly maintained a balance between a secular and theological state. Al-Hakam was succeeded in 822AD by Abd ar-Rahman the Second who ruled for 30 years until his death. More about Abr ar-Rahman II later.

Here we tackle the shower… rubber gloves at the ready? The Shower If you can bear the thought of cleaning the grout - and it will make your bathroom look a lot better make a paste of automatic dishwasher detergent and apply it to the grout with a brush. When dry, rub it off with a soft dishcloth or brush. Treat the shower so it’ll have a resistance to soap scum. Use a gentle abrasive followed by alcohol, which will strip the tile of any residue. Then spray it with the cheapest furniture polish you can find (the cheaper brands usually have more silicone) or baby or mineral oil - then buff! If hard water’s your problem and you have a lot of streaking or a white film, you may need a lime-removing product. Then apply water repellent to the glass

shower enclosure, on tiles, sinks, taps and even windows where hard water from sprinkler hits it - any non-wood, non-painted surface - one application lasts for months! Throw the shower curtain in the wash with a couple of bath towels, then hang it to dry. If the bottom of the liner hasn’t come clean enough, you can always just trim off an inch or two. When the showerhead is clogged, you have to remove mineral deposits. A metal showerhead can be boiled in l/2 cup vinegar and 2 pints of water. A plastic one should be soaked in vinegar and very hot water. But if you can’t remove the showerhead, just pour the solution in a plastic bag, secure the bag over the shower head with a rubber band, and leave it in place for a few hours. The filter at the tap may need a similar treatment.

Foreign Buyers Still Driving the Spanish Housing Market

According to statistics from the General Council of Notaries, foreign buyers continue to be one of the main drivers of the residential property market in Spain. During the second quarter of 2014, the number of private housing acquisitions carried out by foreign buyers amounted to a total of 18,466, which is 11.9% more than in the same period in 2013. This figure represents 20.4% of all purchases carried out in this period (19% in the first quarter). The Notaries’ data also show that, of these 18,466 purchases, 54.3% were made by non-resident foreigners. This spike in foreign purchases mainly relates to higher demand for properties on the coast for use as holiday homes by non-resident foreigners. In fact, 79.2% of the purchases made by foreigners from April to June were situated in the regions of Valencia (5,661 transactions), Andalucía (3,827), Catalonia (3,085) and the Canary Islands (2,052). By nationality, British buyers accounted for 16.7% of foreign purchases, followed by the segment of non-European citizens (12.4%), French buyers (10.5%), Russians (7.1%) and Germans (6.6%). As for the foreign purchasers most active in the second quarter, these included the Irish (with

a year-on-year increase in purchases of 70.4%), Americans (+51.4%), Chinese (+45%), British (+42.5%) and Italians (+32.4%). This increase in transactions has also resulted in an increase in prices. El Mundo reported that at the end of the second quarter of 2014, the cost per square metre of the transactions carried out by foreign buyers stood at 1,548 euros, representing an increase of 1.5% year-on-year. However the Notaries clarified that: “While the price per square metre of homes purchased by resident foreign buyers fell by 0.6%, the price per square metre of purchases by non-resident foreigners rose by 2.8%.” In this regard, according to transactions closed by the Notaries, the differences in prices by region are also high. The regions with growth higher than the national average (+1.5%) were: Navarra (+121.9%); the Basque Country (+116.2%); the Balearic Islands (+8.6%); Catalonia (+6.0%) and Castilla y León (+3.6%). The other regions continued to experience a contraction in the price per square metre of housing for foreign buyers. Source: http://news.kyero.com

Monsoon in Mazarrón washes cars away and brings walls down

A sudden downpour hitting urbanisations in Mazarrón (Murcia) saw roads turned to rivers, cars floating away down the street, walls knocked down and swimming pools overflowing on Thursday, with further rain aggravating the problem yesterday (Friday). Residents of several nationalities described the scene of horror that appeared out of the blue. One British man looked on in amazement as an above-ground swimming pool was lifted up and washed away along with three semi-submerged cars. Rubble lay everywhere as garden walls, some up to six feet in height, were brought down.

Cars and vans ended up in in swimming pools at villas, and one expatriate said the water was ‘higher than her’. Another British man said it was at least five feet deep and there were actually waves in the river that the road turned into. The devastating aftermath made the urbanisations look as though they had been hit by a hurricane rather than rain, with chunks of walls, piles of bricks, parts of ceilings and rendering heaped up among the mud and stacked-up, overturned cars which had been written off by the floods. 2014 week 1

Giving all this years contestants time to settle into the competition the judges scores will be carried forward to next week with no public vote until then. The program took part over 2 nights Friday and Saturday with 6 celebrities Friday and the other 9 Saturday. Opening the Friday show were TV Presenter Caroline Flack with Pasha and their Cha Cha Cha. An excellent start for Caroline with nice clean slick lines and natural rhythm. She just needs to work on a turn out of her feet and a lock out with her knees which will enable a stronger hip action to further improve her Latin American dances. I awarded her a 7 and the judges a total of 27. Next out were Bargain Hunts Tim Wannacott with Natalie and also a Cha Cha Cha. Tim is this years oldest competitor and unfortunately this showed! Dyslexic legs immediately sprung to mind and coupled with a wide gap between his legs didn’t paint a very pretty picture. I gave him 2 for attempting the dance and the judges more generous with a total of 18. Eastenders Jake Wood and Janette then performed a Tango. What a surprise - this despite him being a little too high in his knees to produce the sharp staccatto action needed for Tango it showed great characterisation with his frame just occasionally collapsing due to him pulling his arms back. One to watch I think - I gave him 7 with the judges 28 and Fridays top score. Tennis coach Judy Murray and Anton were next out with a Waltz. This proved not to be the most elegant Waltz I have seen, it reminded me more of lumpy custard with plates of meat for feet! Sorry

Stone me – it’s Oktoberfest in La Marina

It’s time to rock on October 11th from 5pm at The Hogs Head and The George bars in Urb La Marina with their mini fiesta in support of Keep Music Live In Spain. Campaigners for live music will be having their first mini fiesta to promote the petitions for a “Summer Live Music Licence” to be issued in all fully legal licensed premises in Spain. The evening starts at 5pm and will include the hugely popular 5 piece Rolling Stones Tribute Band “The Stoned”. Lead singer Francis Symons has been a supporter of the cause from its onset. Both The Stoned and soloist Janelle are giving their services for vastly reduced prices for the cause. This will be a première in the area for both sets of artists, and promises to be an evening packed with outstanding live music. Janelle at only

19 is a powerhouse vocalist whose range goes from 1950’s to the current hits of Pixie Lott, Jessie J and Adele. D J Sparky J will be mixing it up and keeping the party going for a truly outstanding evening. Keep Music Live in Spain was started due to the amount of bars having live music stopped in all areas of Spain. The pressure group has made an impact in some areas, and is continuing to promote the petitions. Links and information can be found on www.keepmusiclive.es or join their Facebook page keep music live in Spain. Please bring your NIE numbers with you to sign the petition at the fiesta.

Judy stick to your tennis! Let’s just say that Anton is going to have his work cut out to improve Judy. I awarded her 3 and the judges 18. DJ Scott Mills and Joanne then danced (if that is the term) Cha Cha Cha. Oops!!! I’m surprised he didn’t trip over his own toes they were turned in so far when he attempted (being the operative word!) this dance. He was lifting his feet so far off the ground he couldn’t keep up with the speed and his Cha Cha Cha action was awful - easily the worst of the night. I gave him 2 and the judges 16 an the bottom with the judges too! Closing the Friday show was pop star Pixie Lott with new professional Trent and a Jive. After Pixie being tipped as the possible winner this year I have to say I was a little disappointed with her performance as I found her Jive action to be rather flat with insufficient bounce due mainly to her being too flat footed. Nevertheless despite the routine lacking sufficient basic Jive to me, which usually results in a poor score, she will be a strong contender as the other elements are there in her dancing. The Saturday show opened with ex TOWIE star Mark Wright and Karen dancing a Cha Cha Cha. He was better than I thought he would be as he was entertaining and rhythmical. He obviously needs work on his hips, knees and feet but a great start for week 1. I gave him 6 and the judges 24. Next to dance were Showbiz reporter Alison Hammond and Aljaz with their Cha Cha Cha. Alison has great natural body rhythm and musical feel despite her size and had fairly good feet and ankles. This was a thoroughly

enjoyable performance despite her timing being suspect in a couple of places. I gave her 7 and the judges 26. Wildlife expert Steve Backshall and Ola then came out with their Tango. Again another surprise for me, he started off with great intensity and attack. He needs to continue work on the frame as his bottom was stuck out and as a result his head was poked forward but address this and he will be in for the duration I think. The judges awarded 24 and I gave him 6. Jennifer Gibney star of Mrs Browns Boys along with new boy Tristan then came out with a Jive. Oh dear! this definitely wasn’t her dance, she was flat footed with the weight in her heels instead of on her toes, she had no bounce and didn’t point her toes on kicks. I gave her 3 for trying and the judges 18. Rugby star and model Tom Evans and Ivetta then came out with a Waltz. This turned out to be soft, elegant and rhythmical although again his posture and frame needs work as again his bottom was stuck out leaving his head poked forward however a great try for week 1. I gave him 5 and the judges 23. Sunetra Sarker from Casualty along with Brendan and their Tango were next out. Again another positive attempt, posture quite good and nice musicality. Sunetra again needs to work on her posture lifting her core more and also the position of her left arm needs attention. I gave her 6 and the judges a total of 24. Masterchef Greg Wallace and Aliona then danced Cha Cha Cha. I could see that Greg was trying to implement what he had been told to do with his feet, legs and arms but unfortunately

his weight was a bit too far back which left his action looking extremely stiff. He also made errors in the choreography due to the pressure of appearing on the show and ended up with a score of 18 from the judges and 4 from myself. Pop Group The Saturdays member Frankie Bridges and Kevin then performed a Waltz. Wow Wow Wow!! by far the best performance from any celebrity this week. She had beautiful soft rise and fall with great lines. Core lift is needed to correct her neckline and head position, but this was one of the best opening dances I have seen. Definitely tipped for the top based on this showing. I gave her 8 and the judges the top score on this weeks show of 30. Closing this weeks show was Pop Group Blue member Simon Webb with Kristina and their Jive. Another super performance with great characterisation, attack and attitude with great kicks and flicks, one of the best male jive performances I have seen and must be another contender for this year. I awarded him 8 and the judges 27. It looks as if there is going to be a battle royal as this years show unfolds with several great performances already. It will all depend on how the other style of dance suits the celebrities as the winner always has to be able to perform both ballroom and latin american to win the coveted glitter ball. I can’t wait to see how it will develop this year so bring it on! Until next week - keep dancing! Can’t wait - then come and join one of our classes and learn along with the celebrities.

Spain’s government has asked the country’s constitutional court to declare Catalonia’s planned independence referendum illegal. PM Mariano Rajoy told reporters that the vote was not “compatible with the Spanish constitution”. The head of the north-eastern Spanish region signed a decree on Saturday calling for a vote on 9 November. Hundreds of thousands of Catalans joined a protest in Barcelona recently, calling for their right to vote. Unhappy at Spain’s refusal to give Catalans more powers, protesters have been energised by Scotland’s recent independence referendum, and many also waved the Scottish flag. On Monday, Mr Rajoy said “Nobody and nothing will be allowed to break up Spain.” He was speaking in a televised statement to the nation after holding an emergency cabinet meeting. Local laws Catalonia’s 7.5 million inhabitants make up approximately 16 % of the population of Spain. Yet it

is one of Spain’s richest and most highly industrialised regions, as well as one of its most independent-minded. Spain’s deepening economic crisis, though, has seen a surge in support for separation. Hours after Mr Mas signed the decree on Saturday, the turnout marking a key annual day of celebration in Barcelona was substantial, with tens of thousands of people using the occasion to rally for the right to hold a referendum on independence. “La Diada”, as the 300th anniversary of the end of the city’s siege is known locally, has become a show of force for the Catalan independence movement. On 19 September, the regional Catalan parliament voted by 106 to 28 in favour of granting Catalonia’s president the power to hold a referendum, known locally as a “consultation”. Mr Mas, who was re-elected in December 2012, says he can use local laws to hold the vote, even though the central government says its blessing is required. “I can’t pretend that this will be easy, but it doesn’t work just coming out to protest once a year,” Mr Mas said on Catalan television at the weekend. “The future is something you conquer, not a gift, and we have to earn that,” he added. A recent poll for Spain’s El Pais newspaper showed that 45% of Catalans were in favour of suspending the referendum if Spain’s Constitutional Court declared it illegal. Only 23% would like the referendum to go ahead regardless, the survey suggested. Artur Mas has only recently become a supporter of full independence. Since 2007, he has spearheaded a push to revitalise Catalan nationalism known as the Refoundation of Catalanism. Read more on: bbc.com

Film review “You are part of my existence, part of myself. You have been in every line I have ever read.” (Great Expectations.) Charles Dickens’ “secret” love affair with the actress Ellen “Nelly” Ternan became apparent in the recently released 2013 film, directed and starring Ralph Fiennes, Felicity Jones perhaps better known as the voice of Emma in The Archers, Kristin Scott Thomas and Tom Hollander. Based on the book by Claire Tomalin it depicts the ending of his marriage to Catherine played by Joanne Scanlen (1858) and the thirteen years of his affair with Nelly which ended with his death in 1870, leaving Nelly utterly devastated and forlorn. “We are alone. Whoever we’re with, we are alone. The great expectations.” The film constantly moves from the present (1883) to the past (1857), focusing on Nelly’s life married to George Wharton Robinson, 12 years her junior. Dickens first met and noticed Nelly when she was 18 years of age. He was 45. He cast her in a Wilkie Collins’ play: The Frozen Deep performing with one of her sisters and her mother. Her debut was an epilogue that could have been summing up

The Invisible Woman Film review

Dickens’ feelings towards her in the future: Remember to love and be loved, is life itself, without which we are naught. He admitted that he no longer loved his wife who was unable to share any of his passions for life or writing. She comprehends nothing. She spurned the limelight whereas he desired it. She retired into the background just like a piece of the furniture. Dickens was outgoing and desired stimulation and excitement: life is nothing without great company he would say so inevitably a pretty face with talent would entice him away from his wife and family. He loved Nelly wholeheartedly and produced some of the best novels whilst they were together.

As the film begins, Mrs Wharton is still living in the shadows, haunted with that dreadful feeling of uncertainty after the death of her lover. A good man, one of the greatest. Even her husband is unaware she was Dickens’ mistress. She takes long and solitary walks

Barcelona to fight smog with cheaper train tickets

Barcelona is planning to slash the price of travel on public transport during periods of high pollution in a bid to improve the city’s air quality. The move would see prices on all of Barcelona’s ATM transport network halved when heavy smog descends on the coastal city. It is part of a wide-ranging plan to reduce atmospheric levels of toxic nitrogen oxide gas in an area of some 725 square kilometres (280 square miles). The plan — designed to bring particle levels in line with European Union standards — would also see costs for road tolls and places in municipal car parks rise by a quarter. Companies which cut down their emissions would also receive tax breaks under the sweeping reforms,

while Catalonia also hopes to boost the use of rail for the transport of goods. Authorities plan to roll out the measures in 2015 and 2016, local daily La Vanguardia reported. Barcelona periodically suffers from heavy smog with industry and traffic both playing a role. The city’s topography and geographic location are also contributing factors. When there is a lack of wind, the mountains behind Barcelona can service to trap toxic smog. Spain saw its carbon dioxide emissions drop 12.6 percent in 2013, the third highest fall in the European Union, possibly a result of declining industrial output during the country’s crisis. on Ramsgate beach every day in an attempt to exorcise her demons. The Reverend Benham

becomes concerned wanting to help her troubled soul. He eventually works it out for himself and in an emotional outburst she seems healed and willing to leave the shadows behind, return to her husband and start living once more. Great Expectations very much sums up the impossibility of Estelle and Pip ever finding marital bliss. Both Dickens and Nelly saw themselves in the characters and realised they would never be together or blissfully happy. Being a famous writer and an active social reformer, constantly in the public eye took its toll on his personal life and Nelly had to share him with his family as well as the general public, his readers, hiding herself away in the shadows. It’s a sensitive depiction of two likeminded souls who just simply fell in love. “It’s a wonderful fact to reflect upon that every human creature is a profound secret and mystery to every other.”

Beef Bourguignon INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon good olive oil 8 ounces good bacon, diced 2 1/2 pounds chuck beef cut into 1inch cubes Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 pound carrots, sliced diagonally into 1-inch chunks 2 yellow onions, sliced 2 teaspoons chopped garlic (2 cloves) 1/2 cup Cognac or good brandy 1 (750 ml.) bottle good dry red wine such as Burgundy (Cote du Rhone) 2 to 2 1/2 cup canned beef broth (1 1/2 cans) 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (1/2 teaspoon dried) 4 tablespoons unsalted butter at room temperature, divided 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 pound frozen pearl onions 1 pound fresh mushrooms stems discarded, caps thickly sliced For serving: Country bread, toasted or grilled 1 garlic clove, cut in half 1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley (optional)

METHOD

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Heat the olive oil in a large Dutch oven, such as Le Creuset. Add the bacon and cook over medium heat for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the bacon is lightly browned. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon to a large plate or bowl. Dry the beef cubes with paper towels and then sprinkle them with salt and pepper. In batches in single layers, sear the beef in the hot oil for 3 to 5 minutes, turning to brown on all sides.

Remove the seared cubes to the plate or bowl with the bacon and continue searing until all the beef is browned. Set aside. Toss the carrots, and onions, 1 tablespoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of pepper into the fat in the pan and cook over medium heat for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are lightly browned. Add the garlic and cook for 1 more minute. Add the Cognac, stand back, and ignite with a match to burn off the alcohol. Put the meat and bacon back into the pot with any juices that have accumulated. Add the wine plus enough beef broth to almost cover the meat. Add the tomato paste and thyme. Bring to boil, cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and place in the oven. Cook for about 1 1/4 hours or until the meat and vegetables are very tender when pierced with a fork. Combine 2 tablespoons of butter and the flour with a fork and stir into stew. Add the frozen onions. In a medium pan, saute the mushrooms in 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat for 10 minutes or until lightly browned and then add to the stew. Bring the stew to a boil on top of the stove, then lower the heat and simmer uncovered for 15 minutes. Season to taste. To serve, rub each slice on 1 side with a cut clove of garlic. For each serving, spoon the stew over a slice of bread and sprinkle with parsley. Source: www.tastebook.com

place them on the chopping board and cut them into 1cm (½ inch) slices. Return the sliced sausages to the pan. Simmer slowly until the pork is cook through and serve immediately in bowls. NOTES Alternatively, you can use 200g (7 oz) dried instead. You need to soak the beans for at least 12 hours (alternatively overnight) in plenty of cold water. Rinse and boil them for 30 minutes or until just soft, not mushy. VARIATIONS If you like spiced pork sausages, feel free to use them instead. If leeks or carrots isn’t your cup of tea, experiment with other vegetables instead, e.g. broccoli, green beans, parsnips and sweet potato. Source: www.greedygourmet.com

What is the Difference between a Casserole and a Stew?

Definition: Essentially, as a cooking method there is little difference between them. A casserole is the name of the pot used for cooking and slowly has become known as the cooking method as well. Purist insist a casserole is placed in the oven and a stew on the stove top/ hob, however the two are totally interchangeable. Whichever term you choose, both consist of meat and-or vegetables, cooked slowly over a long period of time making it ideal for cheaper cuts of meat. Source: britishfood.about.com/

3 fresh or dried bay leaves 500g quality diced stewing beef 500ml ale, Guinness or stout 2 sticks celery 2 medium onions 2 carrots olive oil 1 heaped tablespoon plain flour 400g tinned chopped tomatoes sea salt freshly ground black pepper

Method

You are going to love this slow-cooked stew recipe, because it’s so simple and gives consistently good results. The meat should be cut into approximately 2cm cubes. Packs from most supermarkets are normally about that size. In stew recipes, you’re often told to brown off the meat first. But I’ve done loads of tests and found the meat is just as delicious and tender without browning it first, so I’ve removed this stage from

the recipe. If using the oven to cook your stew, preheat it to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Trim the ends off your celery and roughly chop the sticks. Peel and roughly chop the onions. Peel the carrots, slice lengthways and roughly chop. Put a casserole pan on a medium heat. Put all the vegetables and the bay leaves into the pan with 2 lugs of olive oil and fry for 10 minutes. Add your meat and flour. Pour in the booze and tinned tomatoes. Give it a good stir, then season with a teaspoon of sea salt (less if using table salt) and a few grinds of pepper. Bring to the boil, put the lid on and either simmer slowly on your hob or cook in an oven for 3 hours. Remove the lid for the final half hour of simmering or cooking. When done, your meat should be tender and delicious. Remember to remove the bay leaves before serving, and taste it to see if it needs a bit more salt and pepper. You can eat your stew as it is, or you can add some lovely dumplings to it. Source: www.jamieoliver.com

animal corner Smoky’s story

Anyone with a cat will tell you their cat is unique, but Smoky REALLY is unique. As far as APAH Animal Rescue Charity is aware, there isn’t another cat like him on the Costa Blanca. Smoky was rescued by someone who found him on a rubbish tip on the coast. His long hair was matted and full of fleas; not unusual, but what amazed his rescuer was the fact that his back feet are the wrong way round. When the call came through to APAH, they couldn’t believe it either. His cat loving rescuer had organised the treatment of his fleas, and his castration, but due to owning cats of his own, couldn’t offer Smoky the home environment that he needs. Smoky is around 1 year old and vets have confirmed that his feet would have been turned around since birth. He is able to walk around, but cannot jump. He is a wonderfully affectionate cat, with loads of love to give. He could not possibly have been out on the streets for long as there are no calluses on his legs; caused through prolonged walking on hard ground, and he would have lost his fight for food and water very quickly. When he was born, someone took the decision to let a tiny disabled kitten live and due to his affectionate nature, cared for him until very recently. Has that person lost him and is looking for him, or after a year of keeping him safe, have they abandoned him to certain death on a rubbish Hondon de las Nieves/Frailes dump? Centrally-heated houses with large individual runs Smoky is currently being cared for in a foster home, Love and care will be lavished during your cat’s stay but he needs a safe and loving environment, where My 29 years of experience in animal and veterinary care he will bring a lot of joy to his new owner. It would be will give you piece of mind better for him to be an indoor cat, or to have access Pick up & delivery service offered for coastal areas to the outdoors which is safe and contained. Scaremongering

viewpoint

I followed a Facebook debate a few days ago, where a lot of contributors got very worked up about the state of the world. A lot of the comments were based on, ‘the world was a much safer place years ago,’ theme. A lot said, ‘It’s not safe to walk the streets these days’ and even one person was convinced the newspapers were trying to hide the number of murders by not making them front page stories. I have to say it made for depressing reading. Peoples perception of their surroundings and the much wider world, gave me the impression a lot of people seem scared these days. But what are the facts that have this effect on people, if indeed there are any facts. One set I was able to look up were the murder statistics for the UK. The latest recorded figures are from 2012 and actually show a drop of 14%, the lowest figures for more than 20 years and per capita, one of the lowest rates in Europe. Now I don’t want to sound trite and have no intention of offending anyone who’s had the misfortune to lose a loved one under those circumstances, but it shows that peoples perception of the country not being as safe as it was – in the good old days – isn’t true. I think what has changed dramatically and what has made the difference to the way people view their personal security bubble, is the blanket media coverage of all and every ‘drama’- we are bombarded and that has a detrimental effect on a lot of our views. Is World order under more of a threat now, with the crisis in the Middle East through the so called Islamic State, than it was say, before the start of the Second World War? Many believe that it is. Of course, we all abhor the dreadful treatment of hostages and captured prisoners, the appalling images of which are available to us via the internet. Nothing can happen anywhere in the world without it being instantly broadcast repeatedly around the world. Again, the perception out ways the reality. Many of the Facebook comments from parents said they were concerned their children were growing up into an increasingly dangerous world, unlike when they were young, saying they as children had no memories of the world being a dangerous place. Well, my only memory of my childhood was of wanting to have a good time as a child; children don’t concern themselves with politics and the like at such a tender age. We have lived with war for the best part of the last century and the threat of war is still with us. But is it any more of a threat? I think not. Maybe the way wars are fought has changed and maybe the very word war – in the conventional sense of two armies facing one another on a battlefield – has become redundant. Terrorism and the way it is reported has a much more devastating effect on peoples perception of their own safety; that is the power the terrorist holds. Maybe we should all stand back a little and try to separate the facts from the fiction. And next time we hear one, make up our own minds and not be led by the Scaremongers. By Paul Martin

Alqueria

The Animals of Alqueria

The animals of Alqueria are as singular as the Village Republic’s human population. Many inhabitants keep pets and there is even an Olive Baboon population in Alqueria which rivals the famous Barbary Apes of Gibraltar. The Alquerian Baboons previously resided in a safari park north of Madrid. Over the years as they scrambled over visitors’ cars breaking off windscreen wipers, aerials, exhaust systems etc., plans for their freedom matured and eventually jelled. The Baboons waited until they had collected sufficient parts, built a car, piled aboard and drove out of the safari park splintering the security barrier. As there is no extradition agreement for primates in Alqueria the Pueblo was ideal for their needs. A White-headed Capuchin Monkey called Pieter relaxes on the patio of a house in the Calle Mirador. He was once an organ grinder’s monkey working in Amsterdam. One day he seized his chance for freedom and absconded with the grinder’s tin mug full of cash. He now lives in Alqueria enjoying a luxurious lifestyle paid for with his ill-gotten gains. Many of the residents have pets. Manuela takes in stray cats caring for them until they can be re-homed. The last creature she saved was scooped up from the very wheels of a speeding car. She pressed the lucky feline to her ample breast. It was the first time many had seen a cat smile from ear to furry ear. Other village cats soon got wind of this treatment. Manuela is now almost always followed by a retinue of quite happy and healthy cats all pretending to be lost and pathetic in the hope of receiving similar therapy. Rodriquez, Manuela’s arch enemy has no empathy with animals he can’t actually eat. The closest he has ever been to a non-food creature is having a face like a badgers bottom after a rough night. Antonio Poyato owns Pepe, a bad tempered Sulphur Crested Cockatoo. This feathery linguist makes disparaging remarks about the world’s religious leaders and is not above telling house guests to attempt feats which are physically impossible. Loco Paco’s pets are numerous and legendary. From dogs and cats to the more exotic animals including huge rodents and marsupials. He converses frequently and fluently with them all. Unfortunately apart from Benjy a Saharan Dung Beetle they are all fictitious, only existing in Paco’s disturbed mind. It is not surprising that the dysfunctional population of Alqueria should have equally dysfunctional pets. One can only wonder how long it will be before these domesticated creatures begin to take part in barrio rivalry. John MacDonald (El Sordo) - www.caratacus.eu

The Pirate in the Kitchen

Magrat the Cat has taken no time at all to learn the rules of engagement: Don’t go near Pete’s legs; don’t go round the front of the house; don’t go in the house. I was impressed – cats, on the whole, take absolutely no notice of rules, but she seemed to have got a handle on the situation virtually straight away, and was keeping her side of the bargain without prevarification. I had gone to Pilates, and while I was away Pete had started to cook the mince for our Spaghetti Bolognese supper, while Magrat sat outside on the kitchen windowsill and watched. However, the onset of rain, falling in stair rods and cats and dogs, distracted him. He turned the mince off and left it to simmer on the hob while he put a walkway of newspaper across the porch and into the kitchen, ready for the return of a soaking wet me. I returned, trod the newspaper walkway, took off my shoes, dumped my bag on the kitchen table, noted the delectable aroma of cooking mince, and went for a wee – my first essential priority! Pete, meanwhile, picked up the newspaper and shut the front door. Seconds later I returned to the kitchen, fully relieved, to unpack my bag. There, sitting on the black hob, was an even blacker cat – stuffing mince down its throat for all it was worth! In the few seconds that the front door was open she had silently slid in and commenced her piracy - the only way she could have known that the front door was open and unsupervised was if she had seen it from outside the kitchen window. She must have devised her plan and put it into action with split-second timing – and all without the benefit of military training! I grabbed her round her rapidly expanding middle and carried her outside (It had stopped raining). ‘Magrat,’ I said as I put her down outside. ‘You bad cat! You know you are not allowed in, and you know that stealing our dinner is worse than wicked! We’ve discussed and agreed the rules, and you promised not to break them. I’m disappointed in you.’ She switched her tail and looked up at me with a serene but unrepentant citrus green gaze. ‘I am a cat,’ she replied with calm hauteur. ‘Cats do not make promises.’ With that she stalked off to digest our dinner.

Great Turnout For Captain’s Day

La Finca was the venue for SMGS Captain’s Day when nearly 70 members and guests turned out, not only to do battle in the day’s Stableford competition but also to give a true ‘Captain’s send-off’ to Steve Davis. Having done a 2 year stint Steve will hand over the captaincy to Phil de Lacy at Saturday night’s big bash at the Marjal’s classy restaurant. Just finishing the golf before the evening storms meant we were all blessed with good conditions, in fact the only blot on the day was another terrific turnout - this time from the midges! After the earlier rain had produced

their favoured damp conditions, they turned out in their millions to pester everybody! NTP’s on the par 3’s were Tony Smale, Brian Staines, Mick the grip & Billy McKeown. NTP’s in 3 on the par 5’s were Shay Cunningham, Tony Smale, Glen Rapley & John Aitchison. Gents’ longest drive went to Colin Rust & Beverly Cullen won the female version. Nearest to the Captain’s drive on hole 1 was won by Karen Simpson & nearest to, but not in, the bunker on hole 9 went to Phil de Lacy. Prizes also went to the top 5 in each of the 3 categories. Here they are in ascending order BRONZE - Jenny Staines (30), Norman McBride (32), Mick Roscoe (34), Keith Wraithmell (39) & Karen Simpson (41). SILVER - Ron Stenhouse (34 C/B), Mike Jordan (34 C/ B), Phil Birtwistle (35), Glen Rapley (36) & Roger Webb (39). GOLD - Ivan Hanak (34), Capt Steve Davis (36), Darren Hancock (39 C/B), Brian Staines (39 C/B) & Ben Price

took top spot & was also the day’s over-all winner with a magnificent tally of 43 points. A big thank you to the “dinner ladies” who added a touch of glamour to the day by delightfully serving the very welcome refreshments at the half way stage. Our gratitude also goes to the day’s sponsors Moneycorp, The Property Shop, Golf Hot Spots, Mick the Grip and golf pro’ Adrian Rudge. TMGS Match Report

Albacete 24th September 2014 27 members arrived at Las Pinaillas (Albacete) and the temperature gauge at the entrance was showing a rather nice 16 degrees and evidence of the wet stuff had fallen the night before and earlier this morning. It did look a bit dark overhead and whilst we had a few drops, in the main the rain did leave us alone. This is our 4th visit to this cracking track with fairways like an Axminster carpet and where 55 € paid for the coach, green fee, buggy, competition fee and a rather nice 3 course meal. As in the past 3 years, most found the greens difficult to read, not to mention a wee bit on the speedy side and although the course is rather generous in its width, the punishment for straying is very harsh. We certainly don’t have course like this down “our end” of the Costa Blanca. We always have rules quiz on the coach going to the course and the 5 € entry fee allows us to provide a “thank you” gift to the waiter and the coach driver. The winner of the quiz receives a 9 hole playing lesson with PGA Professional Joe Dean at Campoamor. Today’s prize went to Charlie Little. Charlie had a good day as he also took the Best Guest prize with a good 37 points. Of the 4 NTP’s, only 3 were claimed and the recipients of a sleeve of Srixon Soft Feels were John Hillier, Norbert Spaniol and Steve Higgins.

Scoring on the day was, as usual here, a little on the low side with only three achieving or bettering their handicap and only one of those were in the Silver Division where it only needed 26 points for the “Belfast Bandit” Ernie Wilson to take 4th spot. New member Pat Long went one point better for 3rd place and John Hillier’s 29 points was enough for the runner’s up slot. A long way out in front with 37 points was our Polish member, Jack Daroszewski. The Gold crew fared a little better and it needed 32 points for Steve Higgins take 4th spot and Norbert Spaniol to claim 3rd spot. The runner up spot went to Bill (my handicap is too low) Starkey with a tidy 36 points, but the best score of the day and the overall winner of the presentation box kindly donated by the golf course was Mick Kennedy with 38 points. Enjoy the cut in your handicap! Photo: Gold category winners. Our next game is an old favorite venue for the Society, the Seve designed Alicante golf and if you fancy a game on Wednesday 1st October where for 40 € will get you a game with buggy and coffee and toast just visit our website of www.tmgs.org and book yourself in.

Alicante Golf – 23rd September 2014 Captains Day

It was touch and go if we would be able to play the night before our Captains Day as most of us witnessed weather that like a monsoon with thunder, lightning and hailstones. But Mother nature was good to us as the weather on the day was warm and sunny and the course in really good condition considering the amount water it took, there was for the first few holes “a keep to the cart path” rule. With 20 members and guests the long trip to Alicante Golf was well worth it and as mentioned the course was in good condition and showed with some very creditable scores. The reward for winning Captains Day was a month’s golf at Alicante which was won with 35 points by Barney Hickey. Mr Consistent is Les Yates, he should be nicknamed “Photo” as he is never out of the frame, Malcolm Anderson made a welcome return from Scotland (forgot to ask how he voted but he was smiling) came in second. Cafe Uno Golf Society

Today, Thursday 25th September Café Uno golf society played at Vistabella golf. A good turn out this week even though it was an earlier start than normal, I think the incentive was the thought of the bacon butties and coffee. Anyway, the golf day started off well with the rain storm apparently circling around us, but just when we thought we had got away with it, the heavens opened and guess what? Yeah we got wet. A few gardening enthusiasts comments were ‘We need more rain!’ and ‘This’ll be good for the garden!’ They of course were riding inside a nice covered buggy while a few of us walked. However it didn’t last too long and the sun came back out and all was well. The damp conditions didn’t spoil the

scores too much either. Results were as follows Gold Category. 1st B.Mcshane - 35pts c/b. 2nd G.Benson - 35pts. Best front 9 A.Rich - 19pts. Best back 9 S.Hamilton - 21pts. Nearest the pin - B.Mcshane. Nearest the pin in 2 - S.Lawrence. Silver Category. 1st H.Hunter - 34pts. 2nd D.Bishop - 33pts. Best front 9 B.Wright - 16pts c/b. Best back 9 G.Butterworth - 18pts c/b. Nearest the pin - None. Nearest the pin in 2 - G.Butterworth. Winner of the 2’s competition G.Phillip. Next Thursday 2nd October, we are at Alenda golf. 1st tee off is 09:40am please be at course 1 hour prior to this time.

CD Montesinos v CD Murada

Montes opening home game of the season seen a hard fought win but should have been a comprehensive victory had they taken all their chances. The early stages of the match seen both sides playing good passing football and the crowd of 277 were encouraged by montes CARLOS who was giving the Murada defence headaches with his movement and pace, but it was little OMAR who went close first his shot going wide. Monte were determined to put the Murada hoodoo behind them and RUBIO had a golden opportunity to score but a great stop from the keeper. With the home side rampant chances by CARLOS OMAR & M&A and a 35 yard blaster from MARCOS which struck the bar it seemed Montes bogey side were not going to be beaten. H/T O-O A change at half time seen EDU on for OMAR but Murada started the second period the brighter only alert keeping from LOPEZ aka EL GATO as the home support call him kept Murada at bay. Marcos was changed for OROUKER

37

and this had a immeiate effect in Montes play, RUBIO produced a good save from a free kick who shortly afterwards was replaced by DARIO. It was all the home side now M&A was linking well with his old pal EDU and the chances kept coming but no clinical finish until the 70th minute when OROUKER won the ball brilliantly spun & passed to M&A who whipped in a cross for a perfectly placed header into the net by EDU much to the delight of the home fans.Murada did press for an equaliser and dubious desisions by the ref didnt help Montes cause but EL GATO LOPEZ produced two good stops to maintain their lead and in the dying seconds Muradas keeper was beaten on the half way line by CARLOS who shot wide rather than running it into the net. Torrevieja swimmers start the season in good form!! This weekend three of Club Natacion Torrevieja’s the youngest swimmer in the competition winning

swimmers got the season off to a blast. After training hard in the sea all summer rewards were forthcoming in the “1st Traversia a Nado Marina d’Or”, organised by Olympic swimmer Kiko Hervas.

Quesada Golf Society Wednesday 24th September at El Plantio Although we were only 19 strong for this game everyone was in good spirits, although there had been threats of thunder storms, El Plantio had warned us that they had problems with the greens after hollow tining but at the end of the day general opinion was that the greens were not too bad, this was reflected in the scores that came in and there were no thunder storms to contend with only heavy rain, I am not sure what a couple of our members had been up to but they were covered in mud one on her bottom and one on his shoulders!!! there was

only 1 division this time so in 1st place Roy Westlake 33pts 2nd place Mike Thomas 30pts on count back 3rd place Norman Lewis 30pts The Roy was won by Ted Hooker who played the most golf, Nearest the pins were won by Eddie Scott hole 9 Ronnie Speirs hole 18 and Norman Lewis hole 12. Best Guest was Bob Jones 31pts. Our thanks to Anita & David at Quesada Country Club for the hot and cold buffet laid on for our return, anyone wishing to join our friendly society please call our membership secretary Les Pancott on 966716723

On Saturday 27th September swimmers from across Spain came together to compete in two races the 9.5km swim and the 4km swim. Vicki Connolly and daughter Zoe Connolly raced alongside companion Beth Alterbas in the 4km swim to celebrate Beth’s 70th birthday. The race commenced at 4pm, and after a earlier calm morning the wind got up and created strong waves and a swim against the tide and wind for the whole 4km. To add to this the sea was full of jelly fish. Not to be defeated all three Torrevieja swimmers battled on in the hardest swim they had ever encountered. Zoe excelled herself as

25th place overall and 10th in the under 25yrs (Zoe is only 13). Continuing in this manner bot Beth and Vicki came first in their categories, Beth first in over 50 yrs and Vicki 1st in the 40-49 yrs age group. Whilst presenting awards during the evening the whole room joined in singing “Happy Birthday” to Beth in both Spanish and English. The team now continue to race in the new seasons calendar of events alongside the rest of Club Natacion Torrevieja. For more information regarding Torrevieja Swimming Club please contact Rosa – 665454126, President Felipe on 609418776 or Vicki 669637015 or by e-mail on info@clubnataciontorrevieja.com
