Is It True Christmas is Cancelled! Oh No It Isn’t

Well it would be if 3 evil witches get their way .Luckily an intrepid band of Pantomime heroes stand in their way in Stagestruck’s latest production “The Pantomime Pensioners Save Christmas“ This totally original show was written and conceived by the multi-talented Stella Reardon who also directs and choreographs the show which has lots of humour and drama, and showcases our very good singers. The audience gets the chance to help save Christmas too. As always this production promises to be the hot ticket for the Christmas season.

magnificently appointed Cardenal Belluga Theatre on Thursday Nov 27th at 3.30 pm, Friday 28th and Saturday 29th Nov at 8.00 pm. CRESCENDO INTERNATIONAL CHOIR

Crescendo International Choir are preparing for three forthcoming events.

If you live near Benijofar you may like to go along to Benijofar church at 7.30 p.m. on the 30th November to a free concert. A collection will benefit the local Caritas. Nearer to Torrevieja, there will be a Sing-A-Long concert at El Paraiso near Carrefour at 4 p.m. on the 7th December. Entrance tickets obtainable from Crescendo member are €4.

Further afield, the choir will sing at a concert in Villajoyosa on 13th December, when they will join with the Orfeo la Vila Joiosa Choir. This Spanish choir is led by the pianist of Crescendo International Choir, Toni Guillen, and the pianist for the evening will be Florencio Saez. The entry ticket price of €3 will benefit the church

of the Assumption of Villajoyosa.

Reach Out is now beginning to gather special items for Christmas and Three Kings gifts for the children of local families living in poverty. As well as toys and gift items, the charity is hoping to make up special hampers for families. Reach Out volunteers Carol Chambers and Margaret Wood are overseeing the collection of hamper items and together with the team of volunteers, are hoping to spread some Christmas cheer to families in need.

The hamper ‘wish list’ is as follows: Tinned meat/fish, cheese, coffee, tea,

herbal tea, nesquick/cola cao, soft drinks, fruit juice, sweets, chocolate, nuts/snacks, biscuits (sweet and savoury), jam, honey, special toiletries for men and women.

State prosecutor to sue Catalan president

Spain’s state prosecutor-general has been given the green-light to investigate top Catalan politicians including president Artur Mas over possible crimes committed during the region’s recent symbolic vote on independence.

State Prosecutor-General Eduardo Torres-Dulce is now a step closer to finalizing a law suit against Catalan president Artur Mas, vice president Joana Ortega and regional education director Joana Ortega after winning the backing of almost all of his fellow prosecutors at a meeting on Wednesday.

“The public prosecutor’s office will take the appropriate legal actions in the High Court of Justice of Catalonia,” the public prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Torres-Dulce had sought their backing of fellow state prosecutors for the suit after his Catalan counterpart decided not to push ahead with legal action, arguing there were insufficient legal grounds to do so.

The final details of the suit have yet to be determined but Torres-Dulce has previously stated he wanted to investigate the Catalan politicians over possible crimes including misconduct, abuse of power, misappropriation of public funds and contempt of court.

Torres-Dulce, believes Mas was personally involved in the

organization of Catalonia’s vote and that it was backed by the Catalan government despite assurances from Mas that the ballot was to be organized by volunteers and civil bodies.

The prosecutor has been under intense political pressure to finalize the suit since Catalonia’s November 9th vote.

The Catalan government says 2.3 million took part in the unsanctioned vote which Mas decided to hold following a legal block by the central government against his plans to hold an official, non-binding referendum on the issue that day.

Of the 5.4 million voters aged over 16 who were authorized to vote, 1.86 million favoured independence, it said, although though no official census was carried out.

Mas has hailed the ballot, which was organised by over 41,000 volunteers, as a “total success” but Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has dismissed it as a “deep failure” since “two out of three Catalans paid no attention”.

Catalonia’s nationalist government has said it will now push for an official referendum similar to the one held in Scotland in September but Rajoy has already said he will not agree to this.

Mas has said that if he fails to reach an agreement with Rajoy over a referendum, he could call early regional parliamentary elections that might serve as a plebiscite on independence.

Demands for independence in Catalonia have grown over recent years despite Madrid’s resistance, fanned by the economic crisis.

Catalans complain that their region does not receive investments in proportion to the taxes it pays and that the central government meddles in its linguistic and education policy.

Cathy’s curiosity corner The place to buy, sell & display your household furniture Hundreds of robotics experts and their whirring, flashing robot creations gathered in Madrid last Wednesday for a top world congress on humanoid technology.

“Hello human friends, I am Reem-C,” said one of the guest exhibits, a 1.65-metre (five-and-a-half-foot) humanoid robot weighing 80 kilos (176 pounds).

Robots big and small showed off their skills at dancing, cooking and even training accident victims to walk again.

The 2014 International Conference on Humanoid Robots runs until Thursday at Carlos III University in the Spanish capital.

“There is quite a big explosion of robots currently,” said one of the participants, Frederik Bengtsson, a

Swedish student.

One of 430 participants from 31 countries, he entered a competition at the congress to programme some of the robots.

“The technology is getting cheaper and faster so it’s a really fast-growing area, like computing a few years ago,” he said.

Researchers are now trying to programme emotional responses in robots, said another expert, Santiago Martinez from Carlos III’s Robotics Lab. “But making a machine that can think is complicated,” he said. “We will not see it in the near future.”

Race for Life Los Alcazares 2014

ort The 7th annual MABS Race for Life in Los Alcazares on Sunday 16th November 2014 was a real success. We decided on a fancy dress theme this year and were extremely impressed by the number of people who made the effort. The starting post was a sea of pink wigs with many opting for the traditional pink wigs & tutu attire. The best fancy dress has to go to the guys who turned up as characters from Little Britain - Lou & Andy - it was a brilliant effort and they had everyone laughing especially at the finish line when Andy tipped out of the wheelchair and everyone gasped until

he jumped up waving his arms around.

Huge thanks to all of our volunteers without them these events just would not happen, thanks to everyone who took part, watched & cheered and donated. A great day was had by all.

In excess of €2000 was raised on the day with sponsor money still being collected.

Well done to Marissa Stevenson from Los Alcazares who came 1st with a time of 13 minutes 22 seconds. She was also 1st lady.

On the Orihuela Costa, where, last year the Branch raised almost €25,000, 15% of the Spain District North total, the enormous job of organising the local count swung effortlessly into motion at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras last Sunday morning.

The Poppy Collection boxes, gathered in during the previous few days, were distributed amongst the thirty volunteers, and with the help of a recently purchased ‘coin counting machine’ the task got underway.

‘The machine made it much easier this year’ said Chairman and local Poppy Coordinator Keith Carter. ‘This is the first time that we have used it and we no longer had the arduous task of counting all that coinage. We were all delighted to be saved the trouble.’

‘But it was still an enormous task which has once again shown just how generous the Costa Blanca public can be for such a worthwhile cause and whilst I wouldn’t wish to pick out any specific contribution I would certainly like to mention ‘Mick the Grip’ Reeves and the local golfing fraternity which, including €6483.11 brought in just last week, has now donated 9077.74 euro to

the appeal.‘ The room hushed as the end of the count approached. Everyone was hoping that the amount would exceed that collected 12 months ago, however, waiting for Keith Carter to announce the total was even more nerve racking than anticipating the results of an X Factor elimination vote, but when it did come the volunteers broke into spontaneous applause.

The total was 16,679.15 which, added to that already collected by the branch during the course of the year, brings the running total to 30,850.85, an absolutely superb achievement.

With still more to come in from a small number of local projects, the final figure will not be released for some weeks, but it can already be seen that the branch is having yet another bumper year.

The Torrevieja Branch has also been working hard and they too will be hoping to exceed previous years totals when they consolidate their collections next Sunday morning at the Casa Ventura Restaurant in San Luis. Volunteer members are still being sought to help out with the count. Call the secretary for details

Welcome To Chris of Furniture Plus.

I have been invited to write to you on furniture products and ideas by the Sol Times.

Many of you already know of Furniture Plus as we have been trading for nearly 10 years and had shops in Aguilas, Alhama de Murcia and Purias near Lorca However, some of you may not know we moved to Puerto de Mazarron nearly 3 years ago to a lovely large showroom of 10,000 square feet with proper windows over Mercadona opposite Lidl’s. Our business has gone from strength to strength as we are able to display more ranges in living area furniture. We have the largest display of beds, mattresses and sofas where you are able to “Try Before You Buy” and the list goes on.

Many of our old customers have found us here and we have been pleased to meet them again and have a chat and a catch up. It always gladdens our hearts when we see our old customers returning to us. We know without you it would have been even harder to come through the awful years of recession.

Right, now down to business of the articles. I will be writing in the future and there will be many comments written with tongue in cheek, which could give a few free giggles along the way. Their will be ideas for different furniture you can have, information and some guidance.

Some of this advice or information you may find useful or not that’s for you to decide. I may write on different subjects too and not always related to furniture. I found out that there is more to life than just furniture like having some fun with friends etc.

The one thing I will nag you about in many of articles is measure, measure, measure and measure again (Yes I Know sounding like Martin Lewis from the T.V.) You go out looking for a sofa, find the one you like and have no idea if it will fit in your living area and you want it before Christmas and you do not have any measurements with you and you miss the deadline date for that Christmas delivery.

Now you are in trouble with wife oops So before you go out buying furniture MEASURE!! Just remember a good eye is not always the answer as showrooms are bigger than the normal home and the furniture does not look so big, but in your home it will look Blinking Huge.

So more trouble from her indoors – oops again I will leave you now with my soap box rant “ Measure, Measure and Measure again” Especially if you are going a fair

distance to look at furniture, it will save you on diesel if you MEASURE FIRST.

December ! And Christmas rapidly approaches ………. Where does the time go ? The next newsletter will be 2015 !

For regular readers of this initial “homely” section Mum Monk – who has lived out here in Spain for some 5 years - has gone back to the UK and is settled in a delightful care home in Plymouth where all her family are except me ! She througherly enjoyed her time in Spain (at 93 years old !) but it was time to reassess and move back to the UK with daughter Bobbie.

Rainbows garden has enjoyed the regular rain falls and is returning to its winter “green” from the scorched brown – with the wells now full of water ………….. Dogs , Cats , Terrapins and fish are all well and enjoying the sunny , but not so hot , days.

TV NEWS ………… More and more television services are using the internet to get the service and as we all try to use it more it is showing how “bad” the Spanish internet infrastructure is ……… those of you using internet TV services will , I am sure , say it is not 100%. However Spain is quite rapidly improving those services and Cartagena centre and Mazarron town are now fibre optic with the push out into the campo from those towns slowly but surely happening. Most of us Brits live in the Campo or on “outer” urbanisations and it will take a while for stable fast internet tom get to us but it will happen. I raise this story because I have had reports of clients spending a lot of money on some internet service they want only to plug it into their router and find it does not fully work. I would suggest you “try before you buy” and if you are getting internet installed be sure the supplier knows what you intend to do with it before you part with any money ! A comment “you will get 6mb” is not enough – the criteria “ping” ,“jitter” and “consistency” are all important.

Having said all that internet TV is a reality and is excellent way to watch TV if you have “decent” internet. The package from Rainbow includes all the sports and movies with a movie library of 100’s of films constantly changing. Contact us for full details and a data sheet.

We often get contacts asking us “what TV should we buy” – These days I really don’t think there is much in the brands – Sony were once the leaders by far but not now. If you can afford the few pounds extra for a “brand” it may be worth it if you ever need a repair – the repair shops can not get the manuals for the “shop brand” models. Then we are asked should we get a “smart” TV – for most of us in Spain the answer is no ! ………

Great as they are you will only get much of the UK English language content if you have a UK IP address – all the “smart” features come down the internet and as soon as the site sees a Spanish IP address it will block – There are ways around this – ask us – but for most viewers it is not going to be an option.

SKY have been playing silly B’s with SKY SPORTS 5 ……. Having given it to most sport pack subscribers they then took it away with message on screen to contact them ………..When you do you will get SPORTS 5 back but only after a hard sell to take SKY internet ! If you subscribe to sports and do not have 5 my UK SKY agent will get it back for you at a nominal charge of euro30.00 – contact us to proceed.

Spanish region bans mobile phones in school

Spain’s Castile–La Mancha region has announced a total ban on the use of phones in schools in a bid to end “a daily battle” between teachers and students.

To date, individual schools in the region have been responsible for drawing up their own rules on the use of smartphones in classrooms.

Now, however, Castile–La Mancha is cracking down. On November 18th, the region rolled out a ban which means students are forbidden from using their phones in class except in special cases where they will be used as an educational tool. In such cases, prior permission must be sought from teachers and families.

Students who break the rules will suffer minor punishments including being deprived of a break, or staying behind after school.

The law has been brought in to end the “daily battle” between teachers and students, Félix Aparicio, the director of studies at Albacete’s Bachiller Sabuco secondary school told regional daily La Tribuna de Albacete.

Aparicio said that younger children generally did not bring their phones into class but that from the age of 13 or 14 onward, this was standard practice.

He stressed that this was a problem not just during class but also when it came to homework, and made special mention of the indiscriminate use of WhatsApp groups.

That said the lifts they performed were carried out with ease. I gave him 4 and the judges 23. Following onto the dance floor were Caroline Flack and Pasha with an American Smooth. After a wardrobe malfunction as she reached the floor (she slipped on her dress coming down from the stairs) she performed a fabulous routine to perfection at a rapid pace which included some really nice lifts and tricks. I awarded her 9 and the judges 33. Pixie Lott and Trent then did a Charleston to

her transitions between the various steps was excellent. I awarded her 10 and the judges 38. Next was Jake Wood and Janette with Samba. This was a fabulous piece of entertainment, talk about snake hips! And some! This was danced to the Macarena which was included in the choreography as was ‘twerking’ and he managed to make it look sexy! As always Jake always sells what he is doing to perfection, the only negative was that the technique on the Samba needed quite a bit more work. I gave him 9 and the judges 38. Sunetra Sarker and Brendan then danced a Waltz. Sunetra is prone to making errors during her performances and this was no exception. Unfortunately, the errors were highlighted with ‘lumpy’ bits in her Waltz. She did manage to get the slide and glide of the Waltz well which appeared nice and smooth so I awarded her 6 and the judges 30. Closing the show this week were Simon Webbe and Kristina with Salsa to ‘Let’s hear it for the boys’.

After his Argentine Tango last week I didn’t think he could get anywhere near the performance but he certainly proved me wrong. The armography he did was so complex and was carried out with ease throughout as was the choreography which was also some of the most difficult I’ve seen in any ‘Strictly’ series. I again gave him a 10 and the judges 36.

So this week the judges bottom 2 were Steve and Sunetra as were mine and their top 2 were Frankie and Jake where mine were Frankie and Simon.

Rojales Pantomime group The Rojales Pantomime group will be performing their version of Cinderella at The Music School in Los Montesinos January 8th 9th & 10th 2015 and they guarantee you plenty of laughs with The Ugly sisters Bianca & Sonja played

Black and White Ball

On Friday 14th November Maria and the Pink Ladies held their annual ball at Campoamor Golf Club restaurant, the theme this year was A Black and White Ball and o120 people attended to enjoy a fabulous meal and danced the night away to an evening of Soul and Motown Performed bythe fantastic Richie Alexander. During the meal the guests were amazed by Graham Mykel performing up close unbelievable magic tricks At their tables. The Pink Ladies held their usual raffle with fabulous prizes kindly donated by local businesses and on the night a total of 1355€ was raised And all proceeds will be given to the AECC to help fund their early cancer detection program and further research

into cure for this evil disease.

Maria said she would like to thank all who attended to make the night a really fabulous affair and to watch this space for details of the next ball.

Just to mention also that on Sunday 7th December Maria and the Pink Ladies will be holding their annual “Santa Fun Run” which this year will start and finish At Zenia Boulveard, the registration fee is 5€ and would like to ask all who participate in the event to also bring an item of dried or tinned food along to pace In Santas sleigh and at the end to be donated to Reach Out to help feed the needy.

Due to work and school commitments the group only do one show a year and that is Pantomime.

This will be their 7th production since the formation of the group.

Our aim is to help the needy people of Los

Montesinos and Rojales so most of the proceeds go to ‘Caritas’ with some help given to local Animal Rescue centres and a small amount to help buy new instruments for the music school.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a long-term condition that affects the body’s ability to process sugar or glucose. It can have serious health consequences. However, with careful management, people with diabetes can continue to lead full, healthy and active lives.

People with diabetes are unable to stop the level of glucose in their blood from getting too high. This is because a hormone called insulin is either absent from their body, or not working properly.

Glucose is found in starchy foods, such as pasta, rice, bread and potatoes, as well as in fruit and sweet foods. When we eat food that contains glucose, insulin helps to move it from our blood into our cells, where it’s broken down to produce energy. In people with diabetes, when the body doesn’t make enough insulin, or the insulin doesn’t work properly, that process

is interrupted and glucose builds up in the blood. This is what causes the damaging symptoms of the condition.

It is estimated that nearly a million people may have diabetes, but haven’t been diagnosed. These people may be experiencing symptoms they can’t explain, or they may assume that the symptoms are due to other causes, such as getting older or having a busy lifestyle.

There are two main types of diabetes: • Type 1 diabetes – this is when the body can’t produce any insulin. This type of diabetes usually occurs before the age of 40 and accounts for only around 10% of all cases. It’s the most common form of childhood diabetes.

• Type 2 diabetes – this is when the body either doesn’t make enough insulin, or the body becomes resistant to insulin, so it doesn’t work properly.

It’s the most common form of diabetes, accounting for around 90% of cases. It’s frequently linked with being overweight.

Both forms of diabetes are life-long conditions that have potentially serious consequences. Left untreated, diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, nerve damage and blindness.

Diabetes is the most common cause of visual impairment and blindness among people of working age. It is also the most common cause of kidney failure and non-traumatic lower limb amputations. People with diabetes are up to five times more likely to have heart disease and stroke, compared to those without diabetes.

However, if treated effectively, people with diabetes can reduce the risk of those complications and also reduce the day-to-day symptoms.

Symptoms of diabetes • increased thirst • drinking a lot of fluids • passing a lot of urine • being tired for no reason • weight loss • genital itching or repeated bouts of thrush • slow healing of wounds • blurred vision Symptoms of type 1 diabetes typically develop over a few weeks and quickly become very obvious.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes can develop more slowly, over a period of months. Some people with type 2 diabetes have very mild symptoms, which they believe have other causes.

It is possible to have no symptoms at all and be diagnosed by a routine blood test.

Treatment of diabetes The aim of any diabetes treatment is to keep blood sugar levels as normal as possible.

People with diabetes need to develop an understanding of how food and physical activity affect their blood glucose level.

As people with type 1 diabetes can’t produce any insulin, they must put insulin into their bodies regularly for the rest of their lives. This is key to the successful treatment of type 1 diabetes. The most common way to do this is with daily insulin injections.

People with type 1 diabetes can be taught to inject themselves.

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Last time we looked at the desktop as a metaphor for your workspace and how it has evolved. Today, as a result of a question asked at my clinic, we will look at ‘Sleep’, ‘Hibernate’ and ‘Power Off’ options.

Where would you find these options anyway? When you have done ‘for now’ most of use will simply leave the computer running until we are ready to ‘get at it’ again.

For most of the time that is the right option to use. But, we live in Spain where the power isn’t always stable or clean, leaving the computer running might mean loosing everything that you have done if the power suddenly stops! For the rest of us, the other option is to turn off the computer, turning it back on when we need to.

So, what is ‘Sleep’, ‘Hibernate’ and ‘Power Off’? Well, the first two are methods of putting the computer into a ‘Low Power’ mode that will let you come back to exactly where you were working, when you put it into that mode. I know, I does sound like some ‘techno-ese’ but, I promise, that when we have finished, you will have a much better understanding of which one to use.

OK then, What does ‘Sleep’ have to offer that ‘Power Off’ or ‘Hibernate’ doesn’t. Sleep mode, whether it is Windows, Linux or Apple is very much the same thing. Putting your computer into ‘Sleep Mode’, puts it into a very low power mode. Everything that you are working on is kept in memory, just as if you were working on it, but turns everything else off. The biggest users of power are the screen (laptops) and hard drives (every computer). As both of these are turned off, the power needed to maintain the work is now minimal!

What other benefits does the ‘Sleep’ mode have? It will allow your computer, literally at the touch of a button (keyboard key), come back to life within seconds where you can, at this point, return to

whatever you were doing. This is the part of the TV advert which shows ‘the fastest ever ‘Startup’ (a sales lie!). This mode is great with a laptop because of the inbuilt battery but not so good with the desktop unless you have an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply).

Second option is ‘Hibernate’! This mode has advantages and disadvantages over ‘Sleep’.

When shutting down in ‘Hibernate’ mode the computer makes a copy of everything that is stored in the memory (Random Access Memory), to the hard disk in a file and then turns the computer off. This also means that you don’t have to save that spreadsheet or document, as everything is being save, exactly as it is.

So what are the advantages? As your computer is off, any power loss or spikes will not affect anything that you have done, and more importantly, you are not using expensive Spanish electric and you are able to resume working exactly where you left off! Now, for the disadvantages! It takes nearly as long to restart as simply starting from cold! As you can see the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, and for a Desktop / Tower where you are writing a 50,000 word book or thesis, then this option has far more going for it than the ‘instant on’ facility of ‘Sleep’.

I appreciate that most people out here prefer the Laptop, because of its compact simplicity, but have to include us ‘Box’ users too. Do I have a suggestion as to which on to use? I would love to be the ‘All Knowing’ Oracle, but I’m not able to make choices for anyone other than myself! Ask yourself these questions. Do I really need to get back to my task immediately? Can what I’m doing be lost if it doesn’t come back on? If you answer ‘Yes’ to these questions then ‘Sleep’ mode may well be the best thing for you. I use it when I on a call-out to monitor distance and time to make sure I don’t over charge and it works!

Let’s Be Careful Out There The Junta de Andalucía demolished two more homes in Cantoria last week. The poor owners after going through years of torment got the final kick in the teeth when their homes bought in good faith were torn down.

Compensation could supposedly be claimed from the ex-Mayor who is now languishing in prison and the developer but conveniently they both declared themselves bankrupt when ordered to cough up.

Working in the property industry for the last eight years I find it impossible to believe that ‘if’ any estate agents were involved in these sales that they didn’t know something was amiss.

Lawyers also; if as impartial as their clients believed and paid them to be; could and should have stopped many of these contracts from ever being signed. The saying ‘buyer beware’ and even worse ‘leaving brains on the plane’ must ring hollow to any owner going through the heartache and worry that their lives and savings tied up in

Calls to benefit fraud hotline double, thanks to honest Brits

Calls to the benefit fraud hotline in Spain have doubled since the British Government launched a major advertising campaign during the last week of October to encourage the public to call the hotline if they suspect benefit fraud, and to urge claimants to report changes in their circumstances.

The Department for Work and Pensions’ (DWP) benefit fraud hotline in Spain – 900 55 44 40 – has seen a surge in vital tip-offs that fraud investigators are now pursuing to verify if people are claiming benefits illegally.

Awareness of the campaign and associated media coverage among expatriates in Spain, and their willingness to call the hotline, is helping investigators to reduce the waste of honest taxpayers’ money on fraudsters.

Work and Pensions Minister Mark Harper said: “Hard working taxpayers have had enough of fraudsters taking money which is meant for genuine claimants, which is why we’re seeing so many people taking action by calling the hotline. We know it’s a small minority who commit benefit fraud but I would urge anyone who has suspicions to call the free and confidential number or report them anonymously online.”

Worldwide, someone is reported to benefit fraud hotlines every minute of every working day on average, and in the last year alone nearly 60,000 fraud investigations have been launched.

The Government has recovered nearly one billion pounds of wrongly paid benefits in the last year, and has introduced a raft of measures to crack down on people who cheat the system - both abroad and in the UK – including: • Tough new rules so that 40% of individuals’ benefits can be taken to repay stolen cash - on top of any fine or custodial sentence handed out by the courts; • Increased penalties from £2,000 to £5,000, without taking a fraudster to court; • A new £50 civil penalty for claimants who negligently give incorrect information on their claims or fail to report a change in circumstances which results in overpayments.

Carlos Lesmes, Chief Magistrate of Spain’s Supreme Court recently said that the court service is only fit for chicken thieves’ not major fraud cases. When the boss admits it’s bad then it’s bad! The Junta de Andalucía has the right to demolish homes before any compensation is paid to owners. In fact the Junta will only compensate if the building licence was declared void. Conveniently for them, these latest licences were counterfeit so couldn’t be rescinded as they weren’t issued in the first place.

How Spain is only listed as No. 7 in the list of corrupt countries is beyond me; surely even Spanish building inspectors could see land being cleared, roads built, supply pipes and pylons put in, foundations laid, actual houses, garages and pools built and huge bill boards advertising where these illegal properties are available for sale. Why only years down the line are the Junta

supposedly getting their house (an unfortunate phrase) in order? With 300,000 illegal properties in Andalucía how can the powers that be say they never noticed a thing until years later?

In the Balearics, the regional authorities proposed a sensible amnesty for building works done without a licence from eight or more years ago. This put smiles on 30,000 home owners’ faces until it was noticed that back in July when the law was rubber stamped in the voting chamber; the portrait of King Juan Carlos hanging on the wall should have been replaced by a portrait of recently crowned Felipe VI. The fact that the Balearics had not yet been sent a picture of the new king wearing his snazzy new crown to stick on the wall; nor even been told that they had to do this means nothing under Spanish law and all laws passed could be declared void for the days they committed this heinous crime against the Spanish

Crown.

Newspapers and websites across the world spread news of all the buck passing and demolitions, of imprisoned Mayors and ordinary folk having been swindled out of their savings with their dreams shattered.

Andalucía has done very well thank you very much from all the people that have invested money here in their quest for a sunny retirement. Johnny foreigner pays taxes in one way or another, uses goods and services creating employment and wealth; yet all run the risk of being kicked in the wallet.

Lastly owners hoping to do holiday lets next year should seek advice as a new law soon comes into force requiring properties to be registered with local councils. Owners need to have a first occupation licence. From Hill Street Blues; Sergeant Esterhaus’s phrase ‘Let’s be careful out there’ springs to mind!

According to a recent report carried out by property portal, fotocasa.es, the average price of rental housing in Spain increased by 0.3% in October, compared to the previous month, bringing the price per square metre per month to 6.77 euros. In year-onyear terms, rental prices dropped by 2.8% in October, compared with the same month in 2013.

This monthly rental increase is the fourth registered in Spain this year, although the most moderate, following rises of 0.5% in February, 0.4% in April, and 1.3% in June.

In May 2007, the price per square metre of rental housing reached its record level of 10.12 euros, and since then prices have accumulated a decline of 33.1%. Specifically, seven regions have registered declines in excess of 30% since the maximum prices reached seven years ago. The region which has registered the greatest reduction in rental housing prices is Aragón, with an accumulated decline of -42.6%, followed by the regions of Valencia (-37.3%), Cantabria (-36.5%),

Castilla-La Mancha (-35%), Murcia (33.5%), La Rioja (-32.4%) and Asturias (-30.4%).

In the ranking of rental prices, the region in which it is most expensive to rent a home is the Basque Country, where the price per square metre per month stands at 9.83 euros. The second most expensive region is Madrid, with 9.20 euros per square meter, followed by Catalonia, with 8.78 euros per square metre.

In contrast, the region of Extremadura has the cheapest home rentals, per square metre, with the price standing at 4.5 euros, followed

by Castilla-La Mancha, at 4.71 euros per square metre.

The report noted that, with regard to the Spanish provinces, rental prices registered increases in 17 of them in October, compared with September, while 28 provinces registered declines, month-on-month, and in the remaining 5 provinces, the prices remained stable.

Weight loss surgery reduces diabetes risk

Weight loss surgery can dramatically reduce the odds of developing type 2 diabetes, according to a major study.

Doctors followed nearly 5,000 people as part of a trial to assess the health impact of the procedure.

The results, published in the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal, showed an 80% reduction in type 2 diabetes in those having surgery.

The UK NHS is considering offering the procedure to tens of thousands of people to prevent diabetes.

Obesity and type 2 diabetes are closely tied - the bigger someone is, the greater the risk of the condition.

The inability to control blood sugar levels can result in blindness, amputations and nerve damage.

Around a tenth of NHS budgets are spent on managing the condition.

The study followed 2,167 obese adults who had weight loss - known as bariatric - surgery.

They were compared to 2,167 fellow obese people who continued as they were.

There were 38 cases of diabetes after surgery compared with 177 in people left as they were - a reduction of nearly 80%.

Around 3% of morbidly obese people develop type 2 each year, however, surgery reduced the figure to around 0.5%, which is the background figure for the whole population.

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese and carrying an excessive amount of body fat.

This type of surgery is available on the NHS only to treat people with potentially life-threatening obesity when other treatments have not worked.

Around 8,000 people a year currently receive the treatment.

The two most common types of weight loss surgery are: Gastric band, where a band is used to reduce the size of the stomach so a smaller amount of food is required to make someone feel full Gastric bypass, where the digestive system is re-routed past most of the stomach so less food is digested to make someone feel full The National Institute of Health and

Care Excellence is considering a huge expansion of obesity surgery in the NHS in order to cut rates of type 2 diabetes.

Current guidance says surgery is a possible option for people with a BMI above 35 who have other health conditions.

But new draft guidelines argue much thinner people should be considered on a case by case basis and those with a BMI of 35 should automatically considered for surgery.

Diabetes UK says around 460,000 people will meet the criteria for an automatic assessment under the guidance.

But the total jumps nearer to 850,000 when those with a BMI of 30 are also considered, it says.

NICE anticipates figures in the tens of thousands. However, the surgery can cost between £3,000 and £15,000 and the move by NICE has raised concerns that the NHS will not be able to afford the treatment, even if there are savings in the longer term.

Prof Martin Gullford, from King’s College London, told the BBC News website: “The key thing would be not only how effective is weight loss surgery but how safe is it in the long-term?

“And we need to know about the cost effectiveness of weight loss surgery and how that balances against the costs of diabetes, it does raise some complex issues.”

Simon O’Neill, the director of health intelligence at Diabetes UK, said: “This is interesting research that reinforces what we already know about weight loss being important for both preventing and managing type 2 diabetes.

“But it must be remembered that surgery carries risks and so bariatric surgery should only be considered if serious attempts to lose weight have been unsuccessful.

“Looking at the bigger picture, as a society we also need to focus more on stopping people becoming overweight, we need to look seriously at how we can make sure people are getting support to lose weight through access to the right services to encourage them to make healthy choices.”

Real Estate and Construction Will Boost Spain’s Economic Growth in 2015

According to a report carried out by independent financial advisors, Arcano, entitled ‘The Case for Spain III: Plus Ultra‘, the real estate sector and construction will be the engines of economic growth in Spain in 2015, as well as company and household financing.

The fall in fuel prices could also boost the growth of the economy, along with the depreciation of the euro against the dollar, the European Central Bank’s monetary stimulus and the fiscal policy.

The report suggests that this growth could be above the 2% predicted by the Spanish Government.

Due to an improvement in financing, granting of mortgages, the return of foreign investors and a recovery in domestic demand, as well as the necessary reactivation in the construction of new homes, the financial body forecasts that by 2015 there will be a resurgence in the

residential building sector and the price of housing in Spain.

The report considers that the renewed offer of bank financing is due to the liquidity and solvency of the system having greatly improved since the end of 2013, and notes that the flow of new credit to households and SMEs is positive and is growing, which clearly supports economic growth.

Ten risks to the Spanish economy are also listed in the report, which are: complacency; debt; demography; energy dependency; fiscal sustainability; institutional crisis; low inflation; sustainability of growth in the long term, wage recovery and unemployment. According to El Economista, the report states: “These risks, although tremendous, are, however, much less than those Spain had in 2007″.

Also called solid mineral-fuel stoves, multi-fuel stoves can burn wood, smokeless fuel and coal.

There are differences in the ways these fuels burn, and not all multi-fuel stoves are optimized for burning all compatible fuels equally efficiently.

How different fuels burn Coal needs air to reach it from below through a grate. Most multi-fuel stoves have a riddling plate that allows you to remove any ash that’s built up, letting more air through from underneath.

www.soltimes.com However, if you think you may not have regular access to wood and so would like the option to burn coal occasionally, then a multi-fuel stove is a good option. Some stoves have a control allowing you to circulate more air from above or below, depending on the type of fuel.

Ideally, it’s best to work out what type of fuel you want to burn and what you have access to first, and then base your buying decision on that. If you live in a smoke controlled area, you will need a Defra-exempt stove or to only burn smokeless fuel on a multi-fuel stove.

Also keep in mind that if you are buying a stove to be more eco-friendly, coal isn’t a carbon-neutral fuel like wood. Take a look at our guide to buying a stove to find out what things you need to consider.

Wood burning stoves Also called wood fuel stoves, these run solely on wood logs, pellets or chips (although chips are really only used for large buildings such as community centres).

Log burner There is a lot less manufacturing involved in logs than there is with pellets and chips - or indeed none if you collect already fallen wood yourself - making burning this type of wood very eco-friendly.

However, you need to factor in time for drying the wood - ideally around one to two years - to make it most efficient, which means you will also need the space. You can buy ready-dried wood, but at a higher price.

Catalan parliament wants Uber cars impounded

Wednesday’s motion in the parliament — supported by all political parties — those amendments could arrive even sooner.

The motion — which taxi company Elite lobbied hard for according to Spain’s El Mundo newspaper — is the latest incident in the battle between Catalonia and the app company with taxi companies saying the service is a source of unfair competition.

In June, the region announced plans to fine drivers who use the taxi app as much as €6,000 ($8,000).

The Catalan parliament’s motion also comes at a difficult moment for Uber.

The Catalan parliament on Wednesday stepped up its war against the taxi app Uber by passing a motion calling for an urgent change to existing laws which would see Uber cars impounded, a move that comes in the middle of a PR crisis for the US firm.

Emil Michael, the company’s senior vice president of business, made comments on Monday at a swanky Manhattan dinner event that suggested that the company might consider hiring a team of professionals to dig up dirt on journalists who write negative stories on the company.

In Madrid, where the service is also available, authorities have imposed fines from €4,000 to €6,000 which could rise to €18,000 plus seizure of the vehicle in the case of repeat offences.

A Tale of Two Villages by Christine Smith “Trees and foliage were being swept along, down in the raging torrent, and then suddenly, we saw a car being swept down the road, over where a wall had been demolished, and come to rest on its side, in the mud.”

For all you expats and lovers of Spain I pose an interesting question: Is Spain a haven of “sun, sea and sangria” or is it overrun by “concrete, fish and chips and all day breakfasts?” To continue this line of thought, do you find the esplanades full of cheap shops selling tourist junk and blaring music “disgorging lager louts” from your local bars? I’m not just referring to Benidorm. And finally, are Spanish destinations a “carbon copy of UK seafronts, but with more guaranteed sunshine?”

Christine Smith chose to live in the real Spain, uninhabited by tourists and like many of us, spent some time exploring possibilities and travelling around Spain. The result is an interesting diary/ travelogue containing some of the details she wanted to relay to you the reader.

She was attracted to Spain because of the people and lifestyle. Her quest to find the perfect home focused on exploring traditional Spain somewhere “completely unspoilt, undeveloped, a non-tourist region that would give her the taste of Spain as it was before we invaded by the plane load.” Yes, you

will have realised that she is critical of the expats who attempt to make their dream become a version of Little Britain, a carbon copy of home but surely she has every right to voice her opinion?

Viva la difference!

The coastline attracted the tourists, the author though was “hungrier to explore” those places beyond the beaten track, places such as La Rioja, or Aragon even Don Quixote country, Castilla La Mancha perhaps?

Interestingly enough, “A Place in the Sun” was showcasing the pretty village and beautiful scenery of Extremadura and environs. “I watched entranced.”Just like that. There were visions of a fertile area lying between the Gredos mountains, two provinces: Caceres which borders onto the west of Portugal and Badajoz, bordering onto Andalucia in the south. A priority was to be able to integrate with the local Spanish and their way of life without becoming too isolated. Extremadura is seen as the “poor man of Spain” like Almeria. It is isolated but not exploited by tourists so it seemed ideal-in theory anywhere!

Success. Santiago Del Campo was the place where Christine found what she was looking for. Her daughter showed some interest in joining her as well as her son, Ben who rented a chalet

on the hills above Careres. The area represented peace/tranquility and beauty, with splashes of spring around the countryside which proved to be an absolute joy. Fields of blue hues. Small streams trickling through the rocks.

What more could you ask for? My favourite, the swifts “swooping down skimming across the water.” Bats down by the river. Fantastic sunsets.

This is Spain at its best, the Spain that we love.

“Great streaks of red stretching across the sky as if it was on fire” as well as “hundreds of tiny insects dancing just above the water creating an illusion of rain falling.”

La Vera nearby, is famous for pimento, smoked paprika. Also the Monfrague National Park is well worth a visit, home to many beautiful raptors: eagles and buzzards.

As a contrast to the unspoiled, natural beauty, the inevitable concrete jungles have sprung up of Torremolinos and Fuengirola with the indolent glamour of Marbella and Puerto Banus providing a bit of a let-down apart from the interesting line up of Ferraris on show.

Ben wanted to find somewhere a little more populated and was drawn to Almeria because it was undeveloped and the rent was cheap. Whilst renovation

Christmas Cake

Method

Combine all dried fruits into a large mixing bowl.

Add brandy, rum and sherry. Mix well and leave to stand for at least 24 hours covered in a cloth. Stir the mixture every few hours.

Mix together the zest, almonds, flour and all spices in a large bowl.

In a separate, smaller bowl, cream the butter, sugar and treacle until its light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time – making sure you add a little flour with each to stop them curdling.

Gently fold in the dried ingredients and mix well.

Tip the creamy mixture into the fruit. You can mix this with a spoon, or get stuck in and do it with your hands. We find this is a better way to get everything evenly coated and ready to bake.

Preheat your oven to 150°C (Gas mark 2) and prepare a 9-10 inch cake tin. Ensure that you double line the sides and

bottom of the tin separately.

Pour the mixture into the lined tin. Because this cake doesn’t rise much, make sure you even the top and make a slight indent in the centre with your spoon. Top tip: if you can, place a circle of baking parchment over the top of the cake. This stops the top browning and drying out as it cooks.

Bake for 3 hours and 45 minutes. When cooked, remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin on a rack overnight.

Remove from the tin and take off the side parchment. Pierce the top of the cake all over with a skewer. Pour over 5 tablespoons of brandy or dark rum. Wrap in a double layer of parchment, followed by 2 layers of foil.

Leave to age in a cool, dark place, in an airtight container. Feed the cake with 4 tablespoons of brandy or rum every month until ready to cover.

Two weeks before serving, cover the cake in a coat of marzipan. A few days before, cover in royal icing and decorate.

Neglected donkey with severe hoof malformation saved by Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is pushing for the prosecution of a man after his donkey was last week found malnourished and partially crippled by with a severely malformed hoof caused by years of neglect.

The donkey escaped its enclosure last Thursday and ended up in the garden of a concerned young woman, who called Sue and Rod Weeding from the Rojales rescue centre.

Almoradi police who attended the scene promptly allowed the donkey to be taken to the Rescue

“The donkey is about eight or nine years old and he’s clearly had not had his feet trimmed for a long time, so one of the hooves has curved over and gradually stretched the front tendons and retracted the rear ones . He’s actually walking on what would be the equivalent of our wrist.”

Sue said the donkey has now been x-rayed and corrective surgery can be be done. He will soon be taken to the specialist Equihealth Veterinarios clinic in Barcelona, to be cared for by a team of veterinarians including Gasper Castelijns, who serves Spain’s 2012 equestrian Olympic team.

“Gasper will have to perform major surgery, including possibly fusing some bones together and repairing the tendons to straighten the leg.

But we can help him – that’s the good news,” Sue said.

Police are in contact with the donkey’s former owner and are believed to be moving ahead with

The Costa Cálida (Spanish pronunciation) “Warm Coast” is the approximately 250 km stretch of Mediterranean coastline of the Spanish province of Murcia.

Extreme off-road Range Rover SVO is in the works Head of Jaguar Land Rover Special Operations Division hints at extreme off-road derivatives to go with high-performance and luxury spin-offs

The boss of Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations division (SVO) has confirmed that it’s not just highperformance, luxury and small-production run models like the Project 7 in his product plan – more extreme off-road models are on the way, too. Our exclusive image shows how an off-road focused Range Rover SVO could look.

“There are four different types of cars we want to do at SVO,” John E d w a r d s explained.

“There are onroad

performance cars, all-terrain performance cars that we haven’t done so far, luxury derivatives and what we’re calling collector’s editions, like the Project 7.

“On-road performance is fairly easy; you just think about ‘M’ and ‘AMG’ and think how can we apply the same thinking. All-terrain is slightly different; clearly much more appropriate for Land Rover than Jaguar. Land Rover has that all-terrain capability built into all its products, but we need to give customers the permission to use it.”

Edwards told us every Land Rover has outstanding off-road performance, but it’s about making that performance “useable” and the cars “abusable rather

than too precious”.

He gave a series of examples to show what he means by a range of more overtly off-road models: “For example, the material for the seats; it’s leather versus a material that’s very durable and very hi-tech. It’s about ground clearance, it’s about wheel and tyre combinations, it’s about underbody protection, because actually the capability of the cars is class-leading anyway in most cases.” Edwards stopped short of confirming exactly which models would be first to receive a rugged makeover, claiming that the idea was still being debated internally, but he hinted that the Range Rover family is near the top of his list. “It’s clearly going to be more obvious on a Defender than a Range Rover, but in a funny way there’s more of an opportunity on a Range Rover,” he said.

“When we did the G4 Challenge five or six years ago, there was a strong but niche demand for a G4 Challenge Range Rover. We never thought there would be, but there was. ‘Plane laser’ finds Roman gold mines in Spain

Airborne archaeologists using planemounted lasers have discovered a 2,000-year-old network of ancient gold mines in the Eria valley in northwestern Spain.

The mining network is in León province, near the spectacular Las Médulas region, which is considered to be the largest opencast goldmine of the Roman Empire.

It contains evidence that the Romans diverted rivers to supply the mines with water in the first century BC. The network of mines, had, however, remained hidden and overgrown for centuries.

Researchers from the University of Salamanca made the discovery using a remote sensing technology known as LiDAR during an aerial survey.

According to news site Science Daily, LiDAR works by illuminating targets with a laser beam to measure distance.

Stranger on the Shore

He, she, or perhaps even it appeared one fine Winter morning. Wrapped in a long black frock-coat to keep the early chills at bay the apparition stalked the byways of Alqueria.

People watched through half open shutters as the spectral figure sauntered to and fro. It appeared to be looking for something or worse, at least to the culpable minds of Alquerians, someone. Whether the figure had powers of arrest or censure it was impossible to tell. From its easy movement and upright stance however an age of thirty to forty would have been appropriate.

Fernández Lozano noted in the paper that the Roman mining study in the Eria valley is the first piece of ‘geoarchaeology’ performed with LiDAR in Spain.

“Our intention is to continue working with this technique to learn more about mineral mining in the Roman Empire and clear up any mysteries such as why Rome abandoned such a precious resource as gold from one day to the next,” he wrote.

The visitors were playing quick attractive football but Callosa were somehow coping with the pressure and did look dangerous themselves when they put an attack together. On 22 minutes Danni in the Daya goal did well to hang on to a high ball

whilst under intense pressure. The home side were coming more into the game but the visitors defence held firm. It was 2 - 0 on 37 minutes when the pace of Marcos took him clear of the defence to slot home an easy chance. So 2 - 0 up at half time but nobody was counting their chickens just yet as Callosa have a habit of coming from behind to beat Daya. Just 3 minutes into the second half Hugo finished off a great Daya move when lashing the ball home to give the visitors a perfect start to the second half. With greens in a very good state, fairways reasonable and a front nine for men being played off the same tee boxes as the ladies’ reds (a rare chance for both genders to actually tee off together and so share the banter), good scores were expected. However, Alenda does have its difficulties and is prone to bite a player at some stage (or stages!) of their round. Such seems to have been the case for many, with only two players breaking 36 points, and less than half of the members getting above 30, with Gold category players on the whole faring better than the higher handicappers in the Silver and Bronze divisions.

Results by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 4th Paul Cobain (31 on CB), 3rd Ray Ewins (31 on CB), 2nd Richard Cleary (33) and 1st John Sorenson with 35 points.

Silver Category: 4th Mike Jordan (31 on CB), 3rd Ron Stenhouse (31 on CB),

TMGS Today we took a short trip south to Roda where we found the course to be in quite good condition but full to the brim with golfers which, naturally, meant a slow round and our last group out just made it to the 18th in what was left of the daylight.

Today’s competition was a mixture of Medal Play and Stableford. For the Gold Division it was a mandatory Medal Play competition and the Silver Division members had the option to join the Medal Competition which is a formal best 3 scores from 5 competitions. It was pleasing to see that 3 members from the Silver Division had the gonads to partake in the Medal.

The NTP’s bought forth some mirth as it appears that some members have a problem in reading the big notice on the desk and what is on the pin marker.

On the subject of members unable to read the notice on the desk, I actually

There was more mirth when the results were read out for the Silver Division and who would have expected 22 points to take 3rd place? Certainly not Colin Marsden who came 3rd with that score as was Fred Parkinson who also scored 22 points but had a better back nine and took 2nd place. This left the Belfast Bandit – Ernie Wilson – to take top spot with 27 points.

It’s a good job it was dark outside; the red faces of the recipients were hidden.

The Gold Division lads scored much better and it needed a 3 over par 75 for Joe Dean to take 3rd spot. In second place was Paul Fairclough with a net 74 and way out in front and obviously, this being the first of five, leading the table was Bill (On the podium once again, and with another cut looming) Starkey with a very nice 4 under net 68.

The Best Guest prizes were won by G Handeland with 31 points to take 2nd slot and the winner on 33 points was H. Kyvog.

Furniture First Rojales Tuesday Night Trios

San Javier GS - SAURINES Hi Everyone, What a day weather and course both fantastic for mid November. We had a great day at the societies Monthly Individual Stapeford at Saurines de la Torre and the winner of the day Paul Newman he showed all the men a clean pair of heels coming in with a score of 38pts great play with the green like grease lighting. We had a great turn out and good to see old friends back playing with us.

We had three divisions and the winner of the third was Christine Flanagan with 33pts beating Roger McGeagh on count back. In the Second Paul Newman was the winner and in second was Barry

Beale on 33pts. A little note to Bob G your name would have been in light if you could putt.

In the top Division David Barns came out on top with 34pts with Frank Murphy in second on 31pts. Frank also won two nearest the pins with the others going to Barry Beale and Richard Phillips. A special mention goes Bill Mclaughlin great to see you back on the fairways again Next game is on Monday 1st December at El Valle pay day is at La Serena on Saturday 29th November between 11am and 12 noon.

VEGA BAJA PREMIER GOLF LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION – 14th NOVEMBER at FONT DEL LLOP GOLF The Vega Baja Premier Golf League second game of its 15th season was unusually on the second Friday of the month at the popular Font del Llop Golf course, there was a difference of opinion on various Smart phone regarding the weather, sadly it started to rain before the first Tee time, but thankfully the skies cleared for a sunny back nine..

Las Ramblas G.S. seemed to be starting where they left off last season and were top of the table coming into their game with second place La Manga North but came up just short in the new format of Better Ball Stableford, missing out by a solitary point in sharing the bonus points and went down 2½ - 1½ and forfeited top spot to La Manga North.

The usually strong La Manga Residents seem to be out of home as they struggled against EuroToffs going down by three games and are now at the bottom of the table with a solitary point from the two matches played.

Despite being in the lowest points coring game of the day Rockets showed they can be a force to be reckoned with coming close to upsetting the normally strong Club25 Serena team by the margin of one point in not just sharing the match but the bonus points as well.

Last season Paddy’s Point G S found the going a little tough and finished down the bottom end of the table, but although it’s early days they are showing some Irish metal and held a resilient Don Cayo to a draw but just as important took the three bonus points to push them selves into a well deserved second place following a resounding win last time out.

Also worthy of a mention is EuroToffs, David Gregson who come in with a very creditable 39 points off a handicap of 8.

The third round of matches is on Friday 5th December at one of the IRM Nike courses El Valle Golf Resort, with a two Tee start at 10:06. The fixtures always throw up some fascinating duels, this month it was the leaders against second place, well low and behold its happened again when La Manga North take on Paddy’s Point.

At the other end of the two bottom teams come head to head.

Ten Pin Bowling League Week Eight played 18th November 2014 Splash had hoped to extend their lead at the top of the table but found Team Finland in a determined mood. After taking the first game, SP could not cope with the deteriorating lane conditions and TF took games 2 and 3, to give them overall pinfall and, a well deserved victory 6 – 2. Mixers were in no mood to share any points with Belgas Torrevieja 2, and with three solid games took all 8 points that were on offer. With League sponsor Jamie Brian leading the way with his 196 and 507 scratch game and series, Juans’ Warriors inflicted a 6 – 2 defeat on a below par Los Bandidos.

Split Happens needed to get back on the winning trail and, after a 599 h/c team 1st game, looked well on the way to a comfortable win. But Los Lobos, after another “pre match” team talk, sneaked the second game by 4 pins.

It was pin for pin in the third game, all the way down to the last frame, when SH bowler Neil ‘I’m not a bottler’ Pipkin needed to spare a ten pin. Calm as you like, Neil spared and took 9 with his last ball, to give SH the third game by 4 pins and, secure a 6 – 2 points win. When Right Move Insurance started off in fine shape, Med Bistro and Bar El Rasos’

captain, Lesley Day commented “why us?”, as she pointed out that several teams took great delight in bowling their best against MBB. It wasn’t looking good for MBB but, with a spirited last few frames, they stole the first game from RMI. Games 2 and 3 were about the ladies of MBB, with Lesley Day scoring a scr 211 second and 203 third game, ably backed up by Mirja Hakonens 212 in game three, MBB ran out 8 – 0 winners also scooping all the Ladies and Team highs for the night. Crazy Pinz continued their excellent start to the season, with a very good 6 – 2 win over Lucky Strike.

With Eero Lento scoring a 601 h/c series, CP are now settled in mid table but, LS have now slipped second bottom after this leatest defeat. Cabello Negro took one look at the total handicap for The Dreamers and thought, how can we beat them? It was Jouni Lappalainen, leading from the front, that showed them the way. With a 555 scr series and 642 with h/c, he helped CB ease past TD with pins to spare. CB finally running out 8 – 0 victors.

SPORT & motoring Competition report, El Paraiso at La Serena Club de Golf El Paraiso’s second competition was held on the course known as the “Watery Grave” for golf balls, La Serena and all those playing enjoyed a rather nice warm day, albeit the 5+ hours to complete a round wasn’t all that enjoyable, but at least the sun was shining and the course was in very good condition.

El Paraiso sponsored this event and the winners were quite surprised at the prizes where the winners of the two categories received not just one green fee voucher for La Marquesa, but two vouchers which also included a buggy. Even the runners-up received a green fee voucher for La Serena.

The recipients of these prizes in Category 2 was Harry Conrad who took top spot in that Category with 323 points, pushing V Garcia into 2nd

place on the lower handicap system.

3rd place went to S Soneson with 30 points.

Category 1 was won by Norbert Spaniol whose 35 points was the best on the day. In 2nd place was Les Cox and way back in 3rd place with 30 points was Steve Higgins 3 of the 4 NTP’s were won and a sleeve of Srixon golf balls went to Harry Konrad and Norbert Spaniol (twice). THE MIKE BARBER MEMORIAL TROPHY We met at Alenda on a chilly but bright morning to compete for the Mike Barber Memorial Trophy, which is always played as a Texas Scramble Stableford competition.This day was also dedicated to The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and their representative Mick ‘The Grip’ was in attendance to thank the Society for its donation of 130 Euros.

The competition was hard-fought and resulted in a win [by only 1 point] for the Society’s Captain’s team consisting of Alan Jones,Lynn Young, Elspeth Craig and Geoff Ettridge [45 points].

Nearest the pins were won by Elspeth Craig,Norman Pickett, Lynn Young and Ray Hill and they were presented with golf balls,kindly supplied again by Nigel from clubstohire.com. Nigel is also offering a club cleaning service with proceeds going to the Poppy Appeal.

Our next game is at BonAlba on 27th November at 10a.m. and the attendance sheet is on the Society

noticeboard at the La Marina Sports Complex.

Sporting Camposol 0 Mazarron FC 1 Mazarron came out on top in the first ever derby between the two local teams watched by a good crowd with an excellent atmosphere.

The game started quite slowly but Mazarron had the first chance in the 5th minute when Mateo found Alfonso who shot wide. Mazarron’s keeper Carrasco was then injured following a corner from Sporting Camposol. He played on for a further 10 minutes but finally had to be replaced in goal by Pablo a juvenile.

In the 20th minute Sporting Camposol had a free kick which was deflected for a corner followed by a good save by Pablo who came to the rescue again a few minutes later when he raced out of goal to make a further good clearance. Mazarron suffered another blow when Antonio Jose was injured and replaced by crowd favourite Cecilio to great applause.

Mazarron began to take control and had three or four good chances, most falling to leading scorer Tolo although Camposol did have one chance of their own. However, two minutes before half

time Cecilio opened his account for the season when he headed Mazarron into the lead.

In the second half Tolo was soon into action again and in the 60th minute saw a long range shot go narrowly over the bar. Five minutes later Sporting Camposol came near to an equalising goal but the game then became fairly open with neither side gaining the upper hand.

In the 80th minute Mazarron’s Manu was shown a straight red card and the game started to get a little out of hand with a number of bookings and the teams were evened up in the 83rd minute when former Mazarron striker Boudia was sent off for Sporting Camposol.

The final whistle came with Mazarron taking the three points and moving back into a play off position.
