Police officer killed in Spanish capital
Emergency services tend to the alleged aggressor, who also fell onto the train tracks.
The 28-year-old was reportedly shoved in front of train while trying to identify a citizen! A 28-year-old National Police officer was killed on Friday after being run over by a train at the Embajadores station in Madrid. The incident is reported to have taken place at around 12pm, after the policeman requested to see the identification papers of a man in the station. Sources from the authorities say that the man “intentionally” pushed the officer, and fell down onto the tracks with him. Both were hit by a train, but the citizen escaped with injuries. The C5 line is the only commuter train to pass through Embajadores,
and connects the Móstoles and Humanes stations. Services were suspended between the stations of Atocha and Laguna. Via their Twitter account, the National Police said that they were “deeply concerned and in great pain over the death of our colleague who was working to ensure citizens are safe.” The incident was the second to cause disruption to Madrid’s transport networks on Friday, after a false bomb alert in Atocha station earlier in the morning. Robot waiters and kitchen staff
Chinese restaurants are using robot waiters to serve food to patrons. The robots can ferry food to tables, while other animatronic staff help to prepare food in the kitchens – performing straightforward tasks such as squirting cooking oil into pans. Song Yugang is the owner of one such eatery, the Tian Waike restaurant in Kunshan, southeast China. He says that using robots means that his normal staff roster can be cut by two-thirds. The restaurant showcases the products of Pangolin, a leading Chinese robot manufacturer. Similar restaurants have opened in Harbin and Chengdu. Pangolin claims that it has orders for thousands of food service robots and that it is thinking about opening similar restaurants overseas. According to the China Robot Industry Alliance (CRIA), China is now the world’s largest consumer of robots, after overtaking Japan. The CRIA claims that China now buys a fifth of global robot output and that more than 36,000 robots were sold to the Chinese market last year, representing an annual rise of 36%. CRIA president Song Xiaogang predicts the figure will increase to 50,000 this year. Growth in sales of robots is not confined to China. In October, Oxford University released a study which said
SOL News
that 47% of the US workforce could be replaced by robots over the next two decades. For now the robots being marketed frequently have markedly limited functionality. Pangolin’s waiters cannot talk or perform skilled manual operations. Over in Norway, however, scientists have designed and built a food service robot in the lab to automate the process of extracting breast fillets from chickens. This is a task normally carried out by skilled human workers. “Our aim is to automate absolutely everything we can think of on the food production line,” says Ekrem Misimi at SINTEF, an independent Scandinavian research organization. The goal is to make Norwegian food production more sustainable, in terms of profitability and efficient use of raw materials. ibtimes.co.uk/

Christmas Special
Grand Final With the final result being solely down to the voting public anyone could win. Three dances were to decide who would hold up the glitter ball trophy for 2014. The first dance was judges choice, the second dance was the show dance after which time the lowest voted celebrity would be eliminated then the final 3 celebrities danced their favourite dance of the series. Opening the show were Frankie and Kevin with a Samba to La Bamba. This was much better than the first performance but she was carrying her neck rather too far forward for me. I gave her 9 and the judges 39. Next were Mark and Karen with a Cha Cha Cha to I’m Your Man. Mark has come the furthest in this competition this year and I thoroughly enjoyed his performance but he needed more pressure into the floor from his feet. I awarded him 8 and the judges 35. Next were Caroline and Pasha also with Cha Cha Cha to Can You Feel It. This was personality plus! Her legs and hips were good most of the time just occasionally she had her weight a little too far back. I gave her 9 and the judges 40. Closing the first dance were Simon and Kristina with their Charleston to My Old Man. A dance full of energy, tricks and lifts and with good foot swivel. Top mark of 10 and the judges 39. Showdances were next Frankie and Kevin with a Fred and Ginger style number to Get Happy which was full of energy
By Lyn Aspden of ‘Strictly Dance’
and style. I gave her 10 and the judges 38. Next Mark and Karen with an upbeat number to Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now. An exhausting number action packed with the kitchen sink thrown in. I awarded 9 and the judges 35. Caroline and Pasha then performed a contemporary Rumba piece to Angel. Wow Wow Wow!!! this was what I had been waiting for so far ahead of her competition and my winner. A 10 and the judges another 40. Closing the second dance were Simon and Kristina with another upbeat number to A Little Satisfaction a real melee of dance styles but after Caroline’s number paled by comparison. A 10 and the judges 39. At this stage Mark as the lowest placed celebrity was eliminated leaving the other 3 to fight it out with their favourite dances of the series. Frankie her Paso Doble to America, Caroline and Pasha their Charleston to Constantinople and Simon and Kristina their Argentine Tango to Roxanne. With 9, 10, 10 respective and judges 39, 40 and 40 it meant that Caroline was the first celebrity ever to score a perfect score in every dance in the final in any series. Needless to say she did win the competition and well deserved it was too! Well just the Christmas special to go now but in the meantime enjoy your festive season and we look forward to welcoming you back to one of our classes in 2015. Keep Dancing!
There were 6 celebrities from past series who took part in this years Christmas Special. Lisa Reilly, Russel Grant, Lewis Smith, Chris Hollins, Rachel Stevens and Sophie Ellis Bextor. The theme this year was pantomime and all the celebrities were dressed in panto costumes in one form or another. With no public vote for this show, it was down to the judges and the audience to pick the winner. Opening the show were Chris Hollins as Dick Whittington and Iveta with a Charleston. This was a fun performance containing his trade mark move from 2009. It was lacking in foot swivel but not bad after such a long break. I awarded him 8 and the judges 31. 2008 Runner Up Rachel Stevens then took to the floor as Tinkerbell with her partner Tristan as Peter Pan and a Viennese Waltz. This was nicely danced but I found it a bit ‘bumpy’ when moving in and out of hold. Nevertheless she still retained the drive for the dance. I gave her 8 and the judges 38. The public’s favourite from 2011 Russell Grant as the Genie with Joanne and their Cha Cha Cha were next up. With Russell coming in and leaving the dance on a magic carpet what else can be said! Only he could do it! I gave him 7 and the judges 29. Finalist from 2013 Sophie Ellis Bextor as Sleeping Beauty with Aljaz and an American Smooth were next to dance. This was extremely smooth and graceful, with a
good frame and nice lifts. A very elegant performance. I gave her 9 and the judges 39. Another public favourite from 2012 was Semi Finalist Lisa Reilly as Dorothy and Robin as the Tin Man danced a Jive.
This again was a very energetic, fun performance which left Lisa quite breathless towards the end but well done nonetheless. I awarded her 7 and the judges 32. Closing the show was 2012 Champion Lewis Smith as Jack with Aliona his princess and a Quickstep. His frame was still superb, movement smooth throughout and all the quickstep intricacies carried out to perfection. I gave him 10 and the judges a perfect score of 40. With the judges (and my) winner being Lewis, it was all down to the audience to decide and in the end they also agreed with us and voted Lewis Christmas Champion for 2014. Well done Lewis. Well that’s me signing off now until next year but don’t forget that our classes are restarting on Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th January. With new classes every 3 weeks and singles always welcome, come and join in our ‘Strictly’ gossip and start off your new year with a bang and that much needed exercise class after all the overindulgence from the festivities! In the meantime Keep Dancing with ‘Strictly’ Dance!

crazy costumes at first carnival of 2015
Europe’s first carnival of the year, La Vijanera, kicked off in Spain on the first Sunday of January as thousands of people gathered in the Cantabrian town of Silió to bid farewell to winter.
The carnival usually includes around 50 masked men or Vijaneras, but Sunday January 4th’s celebrations included around 130, according to the Spanish Huffington Post. The greater number of participants could be thanks to the work of the Asociación de Amigos de la Vijanera which has been in charge of organizing and promoting the event since it’s revival after being banned under the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco. La Vijanera dates from pre-Roman times and celebrates the end of winter and changing of the seasons with a cast of wacky characters, all
played by men, including the Madame (la Madama), the Gentleman (el Caballero), the Doctor (el Médico) and the Old Woman (la Vieja). Some of the most famous participants are the Zarramacos, who dress in sheepskin and wear tall, conical hats. They jingle cowbells which are tied to their bodies to ward off evil spirits from the coming year. One of the main characters is the bear (El Oso), a youngster dressed in sheep skin who symbolizes winter. The celebrations end with the symbolic killing of the bear marking the end of winter and the ushering in of spring.

Spain: where kings are cooler than Santa Santa Claus has come off second best in a survey of Spanish children’s Christmas preferences with a local tradition proving far more popular.
The study, carried out by a Spanish toy makers association (AEFJ) found that 66.87 percent of Spanish children prefer the Three Kings of Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar over Father Christmas when it comes to receiving presents. Only 27.48 percent prefer Santa Claus as their favoured gift giver. In Spain, ‘Los Reyes Magos’ play a similar role to that of Santa Claus in many other parts of the world. Spanish children write letters to the Three Kings, or Three Wise Men, who then bring the children gifts the night before or on the morning of the Epiphany, on January 6th. According to tradition, the Three Kings come from the Orient on their camels to visit children´s houses, like Santa Claus, visiting all the houses in one night. Just as children in other countries prepare a drink and biscuits for Santa Claus and leave a carrot for Rudolph, many Spanish children leave a drink for each of the Three Kings and are careful to remember to prepare some food and drink for the camels because this is the only night of the year when they eat and drink. Major Three Kings parades, or ‘cabalgatas’, are being held around Spain on Monday with Madrid hosting one of the biggest. The capital´s Three Kings parade kicks off at 6.30pm and will finish at Plaza Cibeles in the centre of Madrid at around 8.30pm with a huge firework display. Barcelona´s Three Kings parade starts at 6pm and conclude at 9.30pm on Avenida Rius i Tauletin in Montjuic and will include thousands of acrobats, actors and dancers. Santa Claus has grown in popularity over the past few years in Spain, but children still tend to receive their main presents on January 6th which might explain why they prefer the Three Kings: they often bring the better presents. While the Three Kings and Santa Claus are the most popular present bringers at Christmas time, some areas of Spain have their own characters such as the Olentzero in the Basque country (a man who comes late on December 24th to bring presents) and Tio Nadal (a Christmas log which ‘excretes’ Christmas presents) in Catallonia Read more on: thelocal.es

n e d r a G Home &
In the spirit of new beginnings, HGTV has consulted the experts and come up with some resolutions that will make your home a more beautiful, efficient, clean and green place in the coming year. Here are our five picks for the best home improvement resolutions for the new year and how to achieve them:
1. Streamline the stuff One of the best and least expensive ways to feel better about your home is to clear it of clutter. Each year most of us acquire a mountain of stuff. Without some regular purging, cabinets and drawers get jam-packed and it becomes hard to find the things you use and enjoy the most. (All that clutter also makes your house look dated and dirty, designers say.) This year resolve to go room-by-room periodically clearing anything that you don’t use, wear or love and donate it to charity. After that, think twice about what you bring in, says Antoinette Nue, an Atlanta consultant who specializes in helping people simplify and go green. “Fill your home with the things that raise your energy level and make you feel good, and get rid of the things that drain your energy or are broken,” she says. Stash useful (but not beautiful) items such as DVDs, remotes and those kicked-off shoes in simple woven baskets. Group similar items together on sleek trays, says Stuart McCormick, a designer with Liz Levin Interiors in Washington D.C. Clear your counters of everything you don’t use on a daily basis. And get ready to breathe a little easier in your own home. 2. Make it safe and sound Your home may be beautiful, but is it safe? There are a few things that every homeowner should do to ensure that they’re not living with a potential health hazard or fire risk. First, check your house for radon. This colorless, odorless gas causes about 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year from the radioactive particles it traps in your lungs as you breathe, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. One in every fifteen homes has elevated levels. And with test kits costing as little as $20 at your local hardware store, there’s no reason not to get right on that. While we’re on the subject of deadly gas, make sure you install a carbon monoxide detector on every bedroom floor in addition to fire detectors. If a chimney flue or furnace vent gets blocked or leaks, carbon monoxide could back up in your house and kill you. Make sure your house can breathe. Hickory Hills, Ill. home inspector Jack McGraw is always surprised at how many people’s bathrooms and attics aren’t vented to the outside (or the vents are covered over with shingles.) This makes you a prime candidate for mold. 3. Shrink your bills (and your carbon footprint in the process) When people think of going green, they often think it takes solar panels or a hybrid car to make a difference. Not so, says Bob Schildgen, who writes the “Hey Mr. Green” column for Sierra magazine. It just takes a little old-

The best place to start is by cutting your energy usage in your home: • Remember your mom’s advice and switch off the lights when you leave a room. • Turn off your air conditioner when you leave the house and dial your heater down to 55 degrees at night. • Install compact fluorescent bulbs and low-flow showerheads. • Try drying some of your clothes on the line and wait for the dishwasher or washing machine to be full before you run them. • Turn off your power strips and/or set your home computer to revert to sleep mode when not in use. • Water your yard less. Put in drought-tolerant landscaping if necessary. 4. Work out a weekly system for keeping your house clean Here are a few tips for keeping the mess under control from Jeff Campbell, author of the book Speed Cleaning and owner of the Clean Team housekeeping service in San Francisco. Daily: Dishes go in the dishwasher every night - no excuses! Dirty clothes go in the hamper and jackets or clean clothes are hung in the closet. Bring everything back to its assigned place. Weekly: Clean your entire house, using these tips: • Keep all of your cleaners, as well as rubber gloves and spare cleaning cloths - in a portable carryall that moves with you from room to room. • Stash cleaning implements such as a toothbrush, scraper, sponge, a few cleaning cloths and plastic bags in a builder’s apron that you wear when you clean. Hook your glass cleaner and all-purpose cleaning spray on the loops to keep your hands free as you work around the room clockwise, cleaning from high (cabinets) to low (floors.) • Focus on one type of cleaning at a time. It’s faster, Campbell says. Wipe down fingerprints on all of the cabinets, for instance, before moving on to spraying and wiping counters. Then move on to windows and mirrors and appliances. Once that’s done move on to sweeping and then mopping floors. • For optimum efficiency, enlist the help of your family. If you can, divide the jobs among at least three parties: One of you can do the dusting/vacuuming and changing beds, the other can do the bathroom cleanup, leaving only the kitchen and trash emptying for you to handle. The upside? You can get the whole house done in 45 minutes, Campbell says, leaving more time on the weekends for the park or the movies. Lastly, take some time to rearrange your furniture so it is oriented in conversation groups and not just facing the television. That just might up for chances for real conversation and connection in the New Year. Read more on: www.hgtv.com

Spain set for new high-speed rail links in 2015
Eight provincial Spanish capitals are set to be hooked up to Spain’s world-beating high-speed rail system in 2015 as the country rushes towards general elections. Spain’s public works ministry is planning to add around 1,000 kilometres (621 miles) to the country’s Ave, or high-speed rail network in 2015. The plans will see the cities of Zamora, Leon, Palencia and Burgos connected to the system in the north. In the east, Valencia will be linked to Castellón while Alicante and Murcia will also have Ave access. In the south, meanwhile, the route from Seville to Cadiz will be completed while the Ave will finally arrive in the tourist hotspot of Granada. Salamanca will also be added to the network, although trains won’t travel at their maximum speeds of 300kmh, while the Galician cities of Pontevedra and Vigo are set for Ave stations in 2015. Also joining the club is a high-speed line linking the cities of Plasencia and Badajoz in Spain’s west, which will run via the cities of Cáceres and Mérida. The plans have a total cost of €3.56 billion ($4.25 billion) or 48 percent more than in 2014, with €285 million in subsidies coming from Europe, Spain’s El País newspaper reported on Monday. Spain’s high-speed rail network, inaugurated in 1992 with a link between Madrid and Seville, is generally considered one of Spain’s great achievements, cutting the time taken to travel between many major points in the country. More people now travel by train than plane within Spain and spending on the network in 2015 is set to be double the amount spend on the nation’s highways. However, not everyone is a fan: Germany has noted that traffic between many points on the Ave network is insignificant, a criticism that Spain has countered by saying the network spurs economic growth.

Skeletal horses and donkeys saved Skeletal horses and donkeys saved from horrific Granada breeding yard The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre at Rojales was last week involved in a major joint operation to rescue a group of severely malnourished horses and donkeys from a Granada breeding yard. At least one foal was found dead at the property, and other animals were allegedly moved before authorities could act. Police were alerted to the case by Malaga-based donkey rescue charity El Refugio del Burrito, which teamed up with the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre to save the animals left behind. At least four donkeys were taken into custody on Friday (December 19) and El Refugio del Burrito then paid to truck four horses from Granada to Rojales. “They can’t just take the donkeys and leave the horses – every animal has to be removed if there’s a court order,” Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre co-founder Sue Weeding said. “Basically, if we didn’t take these horses, all of these animals would be left there to suffer because the courts can’t hand them over to places that aren’t registered charities and there just aren’t that many registered charities around that take horses.”
The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre will now permanently care for the rescued stallion and three mares – all of which were all later found to be pregnant and will likely give birth early next year. “You wouldn’t even know they’re in foal, they’re so thin,” Sue said. “It was a breeding yard and because of the crisis the owner couldn’t sell them. Apparently at one stage those mares would have gone for as much as $35,000. This guy had obviously just stopped feeding them.” It is understood police are pushing for prosecution. The horrific case came as the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre was also called to save a pony closer to home, after he was found abandoned near the Callosa de Segura football stadium. “He is full of worms and has a big scar on his head but he’s eating well,” Sue said. She said the influx of cases highlights the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s increasingly important role in animal welfare cases, and urged Alicante residents to support the centre’s network of eight charity shops. All money raised in the shops goes towards the feeding and care of the more than 80 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. The centre next opens to the public on Sunday, January 4. Entrance is free with horse tours beginning from 2pm. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. Euro touches a nine-year low against US dollar
FOR BUSINESS
The euro slid to a nine-year low against the dollar as investors predicted the European Central Bank (ECB) may act to stimulate the economy. The euro fell by 1.2% against the dollar to $1.1864, marking its weakest level since March 2006, before recovering slightly to $1.19370. The drop follows ECB president Mario Draghi’s comments indicating the bank could soon start quantitative easing. Greek political turmoil also weighed on the currency. Although the ECB has already cut interest rates to a record low level, and also bought some bonds issued by private companies, a full-scale programme of quantitative easing QE has not yet been launched. But on Friday, Mr Draghi hinted in a newspaper interview that the bank might soon start a policy of QE by buying government bonds, thus copying its counterparts in the UK and US. The purpose would be to inject cash into the banking system, stimulate the economy and push prices higher. Speaking in an interview with the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Mr Draghi said: “We are making technical preparations to alter the size, pace and composition of our measures in early 2015.” Greek turmoil Political turmoil in Greece also weighed on the euro, with fears that the general election on 25 January, could see the anti-austerity, left-wing Syriza party take control of the country. The possibility has sparked fears about whether Greece will stick to the terms of its international bailout and stay in the eurozone.

wins the Greek election. Reacting to Der Spiegel’s report, a spokesman for German Chancellor Merkel said there was no change in German policy and the government expects Greece to fulfil its obligations under the EU, ECB and IMF bailout. French president Francois Hollande also commented, saying it was now “up to the Greeks” to decide whether to remain a part of the single currency. “Europe cannot continue to be identified by austerity,” he added, suggesting that the eurozone needs to focus more on growth than reducing its deficit. Analysts said the euro was likely to remain volatile for the next few weeks. “The market is readying itself for action from the ECB. The first meeting of the year takes place on 22nd January, so the euro is likely to remain in focus and see heightened volatility as we approach that date, which is also a few days before the Greek General Election,” said FxPro senior analyst Angus Campbell

THE Psychology of colour Colour has always been important - from natural warnings in primitive times to mood enhancers in modern homes. Ever since man understood fiery red meant danger and those purple berries were poisonous, colour has been associated with moods and feelings. Religious artists used colour as a form of shorthand - people looking at a stained glass window or a heraldic coat of arms would have instantly known blue equalled contemplative faith or green meant hope; even saints were associated with different colours. So it’s worth considering that the colours used to decorate the rooms in your house can affect your moods…and here’s why:
17
SOL FEATURE Red - Associated with: danger, passion, energy, warmth, adventure, optimism Best for: dining rooms as it promotes sociable and lively feelings, and stimulates the appetite Pitfalls: it can be overpowering and lead to headaches. Either vary the shade, paint one wall red, or use it for accessories only. Don't use red in a baby's room Pink - Associated with: love Best for: bedrooms as it can be peaceful and restful. A hot fuchsia can introduce passion Pitfalls: can be appear to be very girlie and sickly sweet. To counteract this, introduce hints of dark charcoal or black Orange - Associated with: stability, reassurance, warmth, and is thought to aid digestion Best for: living and dining rooms Pitfalls: might keep the occupant awake when used in a bedroom. It can make a room look smaller because it's an advancing colour, so make sure the room gets plenty of light Green - Associated with: nature and energy, calming and restful, balance (halfway between red and blue) security, stability Best for: bedrooms, living rooms Pitfalls: too much green is thought to make people too complacent or too laid back. Inject some red or orange to counteract these feelings Blue - Associated with: calming and soothing; promotes intellectual thought; believed to keep hunger at bay; loyalty, serenity, authority, protection, contemplative, prevents nightmares
Best for: bedrooms, bathrooms, studies Pitfalls: can look cold and unwelcoming. Make sure it doesn't look too chilly by choosing a blue with a warm undertone Yellow - Associated with: sunshine and energy, stimulates the intellect Best for: kitchens, dining rooms or north-facing rooms Pitfalls: not very restful for a bedroom. Yellow is thought to enhance feelings of emotional distress Lilac - Associated with: spiritual matters - suggests the misty area between the sky and heaven, feminine Best for: bedrooms and bathrooms to create a stress-free sanctuary Pitfalls: can be insipid. Liven it up with black or silver, or both Purple - Associated with: creativity, fertility, joy, but also magic, evil, death and sex Best for: bedrooms Pitfalls: can be overpowering Brown - Associated with: security, stability and very practical Best for: living rooms Pitfalls: introduce a livelier colour for mental stimulation such as green or blue Black - Associated with: death, eccentricity, drama. It's a non-colour that absorbs colour and reflects nothing back Best for: using in moderation Pitfalls: depressing - think of all those angst-ridden teenage bedrooms. Use it to temper the sweetness of other sugary colours such as pink, but don't use it as a base colour

British, top property buyers in Spain
Despite the economic crisis, foreign buyers have returned in force to the country’s property market. Britons dominate foreign purchase of Spanish property, according to official statistics, representing the 18.06 per cent of property selling to nonnationals. But with low prices in many areas, more nations are getting in on the act, with the French (10.48 per cent), and Northern Europeans: Russians (7.50 per cent), German (6.45 per cent), Belgian (6.19 per cent) and Swedish (6.08 per cent). The number of assets acquired by non-European has also been on the rise in recent years, with Chinese (3.95 per cent), Moroccan (2.34 per cent) and Algerian buyers (1.96 per cent) increasing the most. Property asking prices have generally risen by 7 per cent across the country, according to real estate experts. Secondhome demand is now close to record highs, and almost 40 per cent above the boom-time high. The only time this demand was higher was in the fourth quarter of 2012, when tax changes artificially boosted sales by bringing them forward from first quarter of 2013. Foreign resident demand has collapsed since the boom turned to bust and many economic migrants who came to work on building sites have gone home. In the last two years, however, the demand for property by foreigners has been steadily increasing, with many Europeans choosing to move to Spain, for its climate and lifestyle. The highest number of home sales per 100,000 residents was in Valencia followed by the Canary Islands and the Balearics. In relative terms, the regions where home sales increased most the year upon year were Madrid (with a rise of 30.4 per cent), Extremadura (up 25.7 per cent) and Navarra (up 19.3 per cent). The figures come as a new report indicated that foreign demand for second homes on the Costa del Sol has been strong this year. Overseas buyers regard property in the area as a bargain, according to the report from real estate consultancy Aguirre Newman. It also reveals that 90 per cent of foreign buyers can afford to buy without backup financing while local demand is hampered by lack of mortgage choice. There was a slight increase in the number of new developments being built on the Costa del Sol, according to the report, with four new developments started back in 2013. Real estate experts have established that interest in Spain’s controversial ‘golden visa’ scheme which grants Spanish residency to people who spend at least 500,000 euros ($620,000) on property in the country is still below expectations. The policy was part of Spain’s new 2013 Entrepreneur’s Law. Although it doesn’t give people the right to work in Spain, it gives non-EU citizens access to the entire Schengen area. By Money Market

TV NEWSLETTER
january 2015
Welcome 2015 ! We at rainbow wish all our readers and clients a very happy 2015 and may it bring all you want. There is not allot to report on the house , garden , animal and family front ............ all goes along from day to day. The garden is really dormant with the colder days but the steady rain now and again has filled both the wells and hopefully we will have ample water for the summer watering schedule. Mum Monk , now back in the UK , has settled into the home well and seems to be enjoying the social life available ........ I am actually typing this in mid December on Easy Jet to Bristol to go and visit her in Plymouth ...... this Christmas will be the first in the years she was in Spain that we will not spend the festivities together. Life moves along in often unseen pathways ........Just make the most of what it throws at you ! TV News ......... December always seems to be a month when not much new happens in the TV world - I think all the channels and schedules are in place for the festive period and no one wants to see changes then - the providers do not want to risk problems during that period with new and innovative items but I suspect things will all start happening again in the new year. With not so much to say I thought I would have a brief recap of UK TV in Southern Spain both to refresh us all who have been here a while and for information of new comers and those about to or thinking of coming down. Now UK TV reception does vary throughout the regions of Spain and the following really only applies to the Murcia Region .......... one of the lucky areas to still be able to receive UK TV by satellite transmission. Having said that the signals are very weak here and LARGE dishes are needed to get the signals strong enough to watch UK TV ........... The ideal is a 1.90m dish (HUGE) which will get just about all the available channels with a little signal to spare for bad weather effects ...... A 1.45m will do the job with no signal to spare and the smaller 1.35m ....... that many households have from when the signals were stronger will get a selection of channels but not everything – particularly some of the BBC/ITV regions. Having installed this large dish – and that is not always possible on some properties so new buyers beware and get a reputable TV company to survey for a dish before you finally buy - you will need a digibox to convert the satellite signals to TV pictures and sound for viewing on any TV set. There are many types
of digibox for both FREESAT and SKY (watching SKY outside of the UK is technically illegal but there are ways !) and each of these have boxes from the most simple just channel viewing to recording one channel whilst watching another together with the facility for catch up TV with iplayer and the like – again technically not viewable in Spain but again there are ways ! Talk to your installer about all the options before making that big decision. Then there is a fairly new way to watch UK TV in Spain (and worldwide) and that is over the internet – not on your computer with its restrictions and not having to be a “geek” to work it but with a special digibox that to the operator is just like watching satellite TV but without the necessity of that massive dish. What is required is EXCELLENT stable internet supply and that can be a problem in some areas of Spain although as with all technology that situation is getting better all the time. Then if you have that decent internet from a supplier that will support continual downloads (not all will) and that requirement is TOTALLY different to sending an email or booking a ticket with Ryan Air. But if you have it then internet TV is a real alternative ........ I would just say that it is not all about internet speed – many think it is – 2MB is usually ample – but about consistency and if you are thinking of going this route have your supplier loan you a box for a few days before you buy – I have a client that has nearly 30MB speed but can we get net TV to work well ! Well that’s an overview of UK TV in Spain .......... get some facts and talk to a reputable dealer before you spend allot of money on something that is either not right for you or will not work well. Use an installer recommended by friends and neighbours ........ Or who has been around a while doing this job – there are , as in most walks of life , some sharks out there ! But if you are Gwyneth Paltrow the prospect of a January detox is a decidedly more serious business – aimed less at tackling the effects of trifle or chocolate log than the poisonous chemicals feared to be hidden in everything from furniture treatments to rubber bath ducks. The actress, one of the most devoted A-list proponents of a strict health and fitness regime, has

offered the world her latest musings on the most effective New Year purge, complete with puréed garden weeds, “infrared sauna” sessions and, of course, colonic irrigation. She has published a detailed January detox plan on her lifestyle website Goop, which is dedicated to “health, fitness, and the psyche” and features essays on tantric sex techniques alongside children’s baking recipes such as pancakes made from coconut flour and quails’ eggs. Her seven-day diet will, she hopes, help rid people not only of the extra pounds gained over Christmas but “ heavy metals, fire retardants, and pesticides”. It extols the virtues of flax seeds, safflower oil – made from a thistle-like plant – and the “mild laxative” effects of eating dandelion leaves. Those recovering from festive overindulgence are also advised to turn to chia seeds, liquidised almonds, kale and stevia, the sugar substitute perhaps best known from the US television series Breaking Bad in which it was laced with the poison ricin to kill one of the main characters. But nutritionists warned that the recipes are likely to leave many people struggling to sleep from hunger – and could leave them facing a financial headache as they try to source ingredients such as “young Thai coconuts”. “January always signifies detox time for us, and this year is no different,” Paltrow explains in a personal foreword to the plan. “The more we research, the more concerned about environmental toxins we become.” She explains that she had turned to Bruce Lourie an

“environmental thought leader” to come up with a something which would help people “not only drop some accumulated weight, but to get rid of some of the heavy metals, fire retardants, and pesticides in our systems, too”. The site goes on to explain that the recipes had cut out most forms of grain “without going overly ascetic” and incorporated a range of garishly coloured smoothies containing ingredients to give people “an extra kick in the pants”. “Detoxing is a nebulous and overly-marketed concept, though, and there’s a lot of c--- out there, so we asked Bruce Lourie … for his two cents,” it adds. A typical day includes a glass of lemon water, followed by a beetroot smoothie for breakfast; lentil-based soup and wrap for lunch and a supper of “fried rice” made with chopped cauliflower acting as a substitute for rice. Dr Carina Norris, a registered nutritionist, said: “There are an awful lot worse detox diets out there than this but my view is it is just not necessary.” She added: “Compared to some fasts it has actually got some regular foods in it and some proteins, it is not like some of the juice fasts, which I think are less healthy, but I would say it is still low in calories and most people would be hungry. “It would also be difficult – there are strange ingredients and tasks like having to make your own wraps would be very inconvenient, and overall it would be quite expensive for most ordinary people.” Together the recipes are likely to amount to fewer than 1,300 calories, below the recommended daily intake for a woman but not untypical for a diet. “Cauliflower ‘rice’ isn’t really rice, although it is nutritious it isn’t going to be very filling,” Dr Norris said. “It has hardly any protein in it at all and if you are used to a more substantial meal at supper you will probably go to bed hungry and may well have difficulty sleeping. “If you are not used to this kind of eating you would find yourself hungry at times you wouldn’t expect and it could be very hard to sustain and end up falling off the wagon altogether and eating a whole packet of biscuits or reaching for a tub of ice cream. “The whole detox idea is not necessary because if your liver and kidneys are in good working order they are your detox organs.” Read more: www.telegraph.co.uk

Book review Precinct Murder. An anthology of Short Stories by local writers
“We both saw it happen. It was like time stood still out in the street. For a brief second, which seemed like an hour, everything fell silent. Nothing moved. everything was dead.” The Fall Guy by Warren Kent opens dramatically with a naked man falling from the 5th floor of a hotel in New York to his death, watched by two off-duty officers enjoying an appetising Mexican meal and looking forward to a relaxing weekend. Change of plan. Mayhem. Cars piled up. Children screaming: “Within moments, blood had mixed with water to form a red river traversing the tarmac.” Atmospheric. Meet the two detectives: Steve Byrne and his partner, Jesse Andrews. Homicide? The victim had checked into this particular hotel every Friday afternoon under the name of Jones and was joined by a woman which lead the detectives into assuming that he was conducting a clandestine affair without his wife’s knowledge. Intriguingly, there was some evidence that the hotel was being used as a brothel by others. Room 514 had been the victim’s room. On searching, Byrne couldn’t find a suicide note, although a credit card showed the name of Joe Chisoro. Further investigation determined that Joe had employed Paul Mason as his therapist to quit smoking. Why had Joe phoned his wife every Friday afternoon for the past 3 months BUT failed to contact her the afternoon just before he died? Did he jump? Was he pushed? What really happened? That’s what Byrne and Andrews must solve. “Blue had been our colour, blue furniture, blue walls, a blue car. He shouldn’t have bought her a blue scarf.” A Hint of Blue by Maggie Chapman focuses on a desolate location frequented by drug addicts, hanging out in back alleys with bodies found frequently. Death was usually drug-related. A 17 year old discovered the body on the way to work. The victim was Alison Blake who had been strangled with a curtain cord
whilst she was wearing a blue scarf. She was wellliked so it seemed odd that someone would want to kill her. Detectives Michael Cicerello and his partner, Katy O’Neil interview her boss Lavine, Rick, her ex and Dan her current boyfriend who she had been dating for just over a year. “The law of averages says that it was someone she knew.” Who was it and what was the motive? Jealousy? “Anyone could have killed her, she was easy to pick up.” Another prostitute perhaps? Mistaken Identities by Gerald R Wright begins with another murder, but a brutal one this time. The victim is barely recognisable, his injuries are so severe: a fractured skull, his left eyeball had been driven back into the cavity below the brain, with many broken bones and ruptured internal organs. He is described as a life-sized rag doll. Detectives Tex Nelson and Rico Morales discover the man to be ex-boxer Jackson Pike, known as Jacko. Did he double cross someone or was he perhaps playing around with someone’s wife? Or is there more to it than this? Is there a connection between Pike and a thug of an ex-con, Peter Richards, convicted 17 years previously but discharged 2 years ago. Vicious, extremely dangerous, racist. “Was it accidental death, suicide or murder? The daughter or the wicked stepmother? Courting Justice by K.J.Rollinson begins with a suspicious death. The victim is Ken Marshall who had been seriously ill with hepatitis C and his liver was failing. He had been scheduled to have a liver transplant but had refused the operation because he wanted to die. He died from asphyxia following an anaphylaxis shock after being given penicillin which created an allergic reaction. Could Marshall have taken his own life because he was depressed? The poor devil choked to death whilst his wife, Francesca Marshall, better known as the alluring black widow, oozing sex appeal, slept on. His daughter, Cheryl
pause for thought Well that’s it. Christmas is over, as is New Year and even Three Kings! It’s now 2015 and we’re all that much older, but I’ll wish all a very happy and prosperous year anyway! And for us in the Church of England living out here in Spain, and especially those of us in the Almanzora Valley, it promises to be a particularly exciting and challenging year. How? Well, over the years, I’ve received quite a lot of comment about the distance I and a number of others from this area, travel to get to Church in Mojacar each week. Many acknowledge that it’s the distance that prevents them from going, stating that if there were an Anglican Church with weekly Sunday Services closer to hand, then they would gladly attend. Well, if that describes your feelings, I can only say that I have some Good News and some Bad News for you. But first, as they say, the Good News; which is that as from Sunday 11th January, there will be regular Church of England Services each Sunday at 11:00 a.m. at the Church at Llanos del Peral (just up from La Vida) and furthermore we also plan to start weekly Sunday Services at 6.0 p.m. at Aljambra Chapel from February. The Bad News of course is that for anyone living in the Almanzora Valley, Bang goes your excuse for not getting to Church! But it’s amazing just how shallow our commitment to our faith can be and how easily we can be deterred from joining with others to worship the God we claim to serve. How much we Christians have to learn from other faiths where commitment is so absolute. And so I would hope that at this start of a New Year, all we who claim to serve Christ as our Saviour, calling ourselves Christians, will, wherever we may live, determine to examine the excuses we make and undertake to meet together at least once per month, in whatever church we feel most comfortable, to join in worshiping Him. Details of a number of English Language Churches are given in Sol Noticeboard; for any wishing to Worship, whilst additionally, further information about the Anglican Church in this area may be seen on the web site www.mojacarchurch.org Duncan Burr is Licensed Lay Reader for the Anglican Chaplaincy of Costa Almeria and Costa Cálida and may be contacted at djburr@avired.com

Coates demanded a blood test because she accused her step-mother of deliberately killing him. We do know that there was conflict over his will and anger on Cheryl’s behalf that Francesca would inherit 50%. She had argued with her father before his death and asked for a loan of money which he had refused. We have a conviction, a denial but the outcome isn’t convincing. 30 years seems like an unfair sentence with insufficient evidence. And there’s more. My only problem with the short story genre is that the crimes are too easy to solve and the stories lack tension and suspense and you don’t need to be a detective to work that one out! But readable and worth a try. Publisher: Word Play Publishing. ISBN: 1493727728 and 14-93727729.

Bubble and squeak soup Ingredients
a medium-sized onion 2 tablespoons of dripping or butter 750g/1lb 10oz leftover roasted or boiled potatoes and parsnips 1 teaspoon chopped thyme leaves 1.5 litres/2½pints turkey, chicken or vegetable stock salt and ground black pepper 350g/12oz lightly cooked leftover greens (such as cabbage or Brussels sprouts) 150ml/5fl oz single cream a fine grating of fresh nutmeg
Method
Peel and slice the onion. Melt the dripping or butter in a large, deep saucepan and add the sliced onions. Let them cook for 15 minutes or so with a regular stir, until they are soft and sweet. Chop the cooked potatoes into small pieces and add to the onions with the chopped thyme leaves. As soon as the potatoes are warmed through, pour in the stock and bring to the boil. Season, lower the heat to an enthusiastic simmer and leave, partially covered with a lid, for 25 minutes or so. Chop the cooked greens and stir them into the soup. Don’t worry if they still have some butter clinging to them. Continue to simmer for 15 minutes. Ladle two-thirds of the soup into a food processor and blend until smooth. Return the blended soup to the pan containing the remaining unblended soup. Add the cream and a grating of nutmeg and bring to the boil, then stir and pour into warm bowls. Bread isn’t necessary here but might be welcome if you aren’t having it with a sandwich. bbc.co.uk/food

Ingredients
1.Pour the cream and milk into a saucepan. Split the vanilla pod down its length and scrape out all the seeds into the saucepan. Throw in the empty pod for good measure and heat very gently, stirring occasionally. 2. When the milk is at the point of boiling, remove from the heat and leave to stand for 10 minutes. 3. Butter a 2 litre shallow ovenproof dish. Put the remaining butter in a small saucepan and melt over a low heat; set aside. 4. Carefully cut the crusts off the bread and cut the bread into roughly 2cm chunks – you should end up with around 250g. Put the bread in the buttered dish. 5. Break roughly half the pecans in half and scatter over the bread. Add the rest of the nuts whole. Toss the bread with the pecan nuts. Drizzle with the melted butter and set aside. 6. Using an electric whisk, beat the eggs in a large bowl with the sugar, maple syrup and bourbon, if using, for five minutes until pale and thick. 7. Strain the warm cream mixture through a sieve onto the eggs and whisk well. Pour slowly over the bread. Leave the
pudding to stand for an hour at room temperature or cover and chill in the fridge overnight. 8. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Sprinkle the remaining 1 tbsp of sugar over the pudding and bake in the centre of the oven for 45 minutes until deep golden brown and slightly risen. 9. While the pudding is baking, make the butterscotch sauce. 10. For the butterscotch sauce: put the butter and sugar in a small pan and melt together over a low heat until smooth, stirring regularly with a wooden spoon until smooth. 11. Bring to a simmer then carefully stir in the bourbon or whiskey, taking care not to get splashed by the hot caramel, followed by the cream, stirring continuously as the bubbles subside. 12. Cook for a minute or so until smooth and creamy, stirring. Pour into a small jug. Serve the pudding hot with whipped cream or ice cream and the butterscotch sauce for pouring. http://uktv.co.uk/food

10 Amazing facts about Spanish food & cuisine
25
getting the most for your money The January sales are in full swing and with huge discounts on offer it can be all too tempting to forget your good intentions and splurge. However, we’re in uncertain times and it’s never been more important to watch where your money is going. So, to help you bag some bargains without breaking the bank, we share our top tips to help you get.
Make a budget...
Spanish food is one of the best cuisines around the world. Discover 10 of the most amazing and curious facts about the Spanish cuisine and gastronomy. Top 10 food facts of Spain: Spain with a 44 % of market share is by far the most important producer of olive oil in the world. This is more than twice the Italian production and four times Greek production! Spain is the number one in terms of area covered by vineyards. Around 15.5 % of the world vineyards are in Spain! Around 75 % of the world saffron production is in Spain! Saffron is one of the essential ingredients of the paella dish! The wine Sherry comes from a city of southern Spain called Jerez, a corruption of the Persian name for the city (Sheriz). Tortillas in Spain are omelettes! Spanish omelette is commonly known as Spanish tortilla. Spain is the 5th exporter of wine to the U.S.A. (after Italy, Australia, France and Chile). Most famous wines in Spain are red ones, but the majority of the vineyards are of white grapes! Tomatoes, potatoes, cacao, tobacco were imported to Europe by Spaniards. See Spanish food influences and history. Tapas are not a typical dishes or food, tapas are more a way to eat them. The word ‘tapa’ means cover and Tapas originally were slices of cheese or something else used to cover a drink in order to keep flies and mosquitos away! Spain is the second country in numbers of bars per inhabitant, just after Cyprus.
When faced with ‘on sale’ signs it’s incredibly easy to go mad and spend more than you should. Because of this it’s always a good idea to have a realistic idea of how much you can afford to spend before you even think about going sale shopping. You need to be quite brutal when doing this. If you don’t have any spare cash then make sure you steer well clear of the shops so that you don’t end up spending money you don’t have. Once you have a budget in mind make sure you stick to it. Keep a mental note of how much you’re spending as you go around the shops and stop once you’ve reached your limit.
Write a shopping list... Impulse buys will be the downfall of your sale shopping experience as you’ll inevitably come home laden with things you don’t actually need. So, to make your money go further make sure you write a shopping list before you venture into town. If you’re furniture shopping then make sure you take the measurements with you so you know exactly what you’re looking for.
Think through your purchase... Before you even pick something up to look at the price and ask yourself whether you really need it. Think about how much you would be willing to pay for it and if you’d even be considering buying it were it not on sale. If the answer to both questions is yes and the price is right, then you have yourself a bargain. If not, then walk away.
Get a second opinion... If you don’t trust yourself to be let loose in the sales alone then take a friend along too. Asking them to play devil’s advocate and question your every purchase is a great way of making sure that you don’t end up buying things just for the sake of it.
Check you’re getting vfm... Don’t automatically assume that just because something is on sale it’s going to give you value for money. Firstly, check how much the item is reduced by and consider whether you can get a similar item elsewhere for less (shopping around is particularly important with big purchases). Then, take the time to examine the quality of the item looking for any obvious damage or bad craftsmanship? It’s worth bearing in mind that some stores may be willing to give you an additional discount if you notice a fault. However, if you take them up on their offer they may not give you a refund at a later date.
Negotiate... Scary as it may seem, politely asking whether the sales assistant would be able to knock a little extra off the price tag often pays. Remember, you have nothing to loose, the worse they can do is say “no”.
Check the returns policy... By law you will be entitled to a refund, replacement or return if the item you buy turns out to be faulty. This applies even to items purchased on sale or as seconds. However, retailers don’t have to give you a refund just because you’ve changed your mind so it’s vital you check the store policy before you buy.
Keep your receipts... You should always keep your receipt when you buy anything as this will act as your ‘proof of purchase’ if the item later turns out to be faulty.
Think about how you’ll pay... It goes without saying that store cards should be given a wide berth when you’re sale shopping as they charge high APRs and can encourage you to spend more than you have. The only exception to this is if they give you an additional discount on your purchase and you are 100% certain that you will be able to clear them completely when your statement arrives. If you have a tendency to get carried away and go over budget it can be a good idea to shop in cash. This way the money you have feels more real and it’s easier to keep track of exactly how much you have left to spend. Avoid making extra trips to the cash point though, once your money runs out it’s time to go home. On the other hand, if you’re confident of your ability to stick to a budget then shopping on a rewards credit card can be a good idea, providing you clear your bill when your statement arrives.

Five Things To Do With That Old Rusty Car Your old car has turned into a rust bucket, and you are wondering what comes next. Here are five ideas that benefit you and are easy on Mother Nature. Your car is an eyesore, but you still want to keep it. It may be running perfectly, money is tight, or you just are not ready to give it up. There are proven, environmentally friendly rust removal techniques you can employ. If it’s light and shallow, sanding is the easiest and cheapest option. Applying a rust converter like Corroseal triggers a chemical response turning the corrosion into iron tannate, a protective sealant. If the oxidization goes deeper than surface level, solutions such as Evapo-Rust are sure to do the trick Repurpose It In today’s environmentally conscious world, repurposing the obsolete is all the rage. Rusty cars are no different. There are a variety of ways your old vehicle can be repurposed. Ensure that the battery and toxic substances have been responsibly disposed of by a knowledgeable mechanic. Then wow your friends and family by using old car parts for some of the following: • Furniture and shelving • Animal enclosures • Door handles as drawer pulls
• Barbecue grills • Abstract art
Restore It
• Flower beds
• Headlamps as indoor lighting
Sell for Scrap When you scrap your vehicle everyone wins, including the environment. The scrap yard will take it apart bit by bit, and every component is recycled. Instead of making their way into your drinking water, dangerous substances such as mercury switches and toxic chemicals are removed and safely discarded. Recycling your car’s metal uses significantly less energy than it does to create new materials according to General Recycling Industries Ltd., auto recyclers in Edmonton. Not only do you help protect the earth, you also come away with additional spending money, possibly for that new car. Donate To Charity Many charities will take your rusty auto. Donating to certain charities, such as Kars4Kids, will also qualify you for a tax deduction. They will even come pick the car up for you. The IRS has a handy online pamphlet loaded with information on donating to charity for tax deduction purposes. Your options for finding a new purpose for your rusty old car are numerous and diverse. The question is, which opportunity is best for you and your current situation? - See more at: http://www. dudesustainable.com

Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. I have just had a self confessed computer-phobe come a very long way just to tell me that he loves the way I write my articles and just wanted to thank me for making computers seem a little less frightening. He told me you tell everyone that he is a ‘computer moron’. In reply I have to say that I have not yet met anyone that fits that description and this gentleman certainly doesn’t! So, now my ego is at full bloat, and so is the fear of not being able to keep up this level. Bearing all this in mind, here goes the article for today. Many of you may have come across the need to have someone fix your computer, and you can guarantee that the shop it shut or the person who can fix it is miles
away, we call this ‘Sod’s Law’ :-) Who on earth can you get someone to fix it? Well, most of us will have come across someone will take over you computer, usually from India by someone who’s English is only marginally better than of the house pet, and repair from there. There are free (did I say “Free” again – tut, tut!) programs that will allow you get someone knowledgeable to take over your computer and repair it! How do these work? It relies on a complex system of data exchange between computers and each program has its own systems which is much more information than most of us need. What we need to know is which program to use. The standard has been set by a program called ‘Teamviewer’ which is free providing you are helping a friend and not in business. There are 2 versions for Windows. The first is the main control

viewpoint La Gatita
The festive season became the vermin season as giant rats roamed Alqueria. Mutated by Remitroot residue and pollution from the Río Verde these huge rodents roamed the Pueblo unchallenged. A rat dressed as Father Christmas stole every gift in the Village telling the startled children it was new north-pole policy due to ‘La Crisis’. On another occasion two rats walked into the kitchen of the Bar La Casa Devante, rat number one said, “Look at all that food”. Rat number two replied “Ruddy hell a talking rat” and bolted for the safety of the Plaza. But the Elders of Alqueria had a plan. They were to purposely mutate a cat which would then be set loose on the Village’s giant rat population. It would hopefully drive them into another town, transferring both the rodents and the problem of their eradication. What could go wrong? Fluffy was a half Siamese half European cat. Its day consisted of eating, sleeping and sitting on someone’s lap being fondled. An idyllic existence thought Manuela as she fed the feline Remitroot mash. The cat grew in size and ferocity. Cats of standard size scattered before it as the creature consumed alarming quantities of Remitroot products. So much in fact that it forced the commodity price sky high on the black market. Fluffy used to sleep in the town hall but his purring had started to loosen the
stonework. He now slumbered among the fragrant orange trees waiting for the day he would be released among the Town’s unsuspecting vermin. When the day arrived Fluffy went to work with gusto, intent on supplementing his Remitroot diet with a morsel or two of juicy rodent flesh. The rats, taking one look at the huge Fluffy departed Alqueria taking with them whatever booty they could carry. The plan had worked well, worked quickly and caused no harm to the environment. An ideal solution with only one drawback. What do you do with a four metre cross Siamese cat that is now surplus to requirements? Its daily consumption of Remitroot in all its various forms was ruining the economy of the Village. There were more practical problems as well. A four metre cat licking its genitals in public was quite disturbing for the more innocent of the Town’s population. Children would ask, “Why’s Fluffy doing that Mum?”, “Because it can” was the usual embarrassed reply. The Elders of Alqueria once more came to the fore with an ingenious plan which nobody else could have possibly thought of. They would breed a giant dog. This of course came as a complete surprise to all and only went to demonstrate the lateral thinking of which the leaders of Alqueria are capable. What could go wrong?
panel and is surprisingly very easy to use. The second part is a ‘stand-alone’ program that doesn’t have to be installed and will just run. You are given 2 numbers, the first is a personal number, of 9 digits, that won’t change and the second number, of 4 digits, that will change every time the program is started – good security as there are 0000 to 9999 (10,000) possible combinations. It is incredibly easy to use providing that you close all the other programs, as it sometimes hides! The downside is the cost for a business version gets dangerously expensive, very quickly! Having said that, it is easy to use and good! There are completely free program that is available is called ‘TightVNC’. Setting it up required a number of options that I had to think about. This isn’t good for someone who just wants to have someone fix their computer. I found it a little confusing when picking the right part of the program to start the connection. When I tried it on a local network it said that the connection was actively refused. This program was
uninstalled immediately! The next was ‘Ammyy’ which claims to be ‘Zero-Config Remote Desktop Software Ammyy Admin. The easiest way to establish remote desktop connection’. For once I am happy to say that it is very nearly true! As a test I ran the program on both my desktop and laptop. Both wanted a number that had been generated on the other machine. I type the number from my laptop into the input box on the program running on my desktop and immediately got message on my laptop asking if I would allow the connection. Having agreed, I was able to take over the laptop from my desktop use it as though I were typing into it. The addresses to get and try these programs are: http://www.teamviewer.com/ and http://www.ammyy.com/en/ Have a good week until next week.

New Year Resolution
My attention was caught by an item on the news about a young man named Luke Cameron, whose New Year Resolution for 2014 was to do a good deed every day. In my personal world I have been on the receiving end of numerous good deeds: The unfailingly helpful assistants in the Farmacia; those savvy people who know where things are in supermarkets, the tall gentlemen who reach things for me from high shelves in those same supermarkets, or lift heavy water bottles for me; the motorists who stop and let me cross, even if I’m nowhere near a crossing; petrol pump assistants who round the sum owed down, not up, and so, so many others. Believe me, I notice you, and I appreciate you. Give yourselves a pat on the back, all of you. It set me thinking about good deeds in general, and I came to the conclusion that we are daily surrounded by good deeds – in fact there are so many of them that it is easy to become i n u r e d to them, completely unaware of them. josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk I’m not

referring to great big extravagant actions, like paying for a whole village to go on holiday, or standing in the middle of Albox handing out 100€ notes to complete strangers – surely the first would attract the attention of burglars, while the latter would definitely attract the interest of the officers of the Law. I am thinking instead about the everyday. For instance, how irritating is it to get up in the morning, go blearyeyed to make the cup of coffee that will bring the world into focus, only to discover that there isn’t any! It fair ruins your morning, doesn’t it? However, do we ever stop to appreciate how nice to is to get up, etc, etc, make the coffee, then take the cup and sit down in an inert lump in front of the telly while the magic beans gradually bring conscious life back into all the outlying areas of your body? That is a passive sort of example – if the coffee had jumped out of the cupboard and made itself, then that would qualify it as a deed; the point is that we do take a comfortable norm for granted. We take smiles, good mornings, thank yous and pleases for granted, and so often we expect the whole world to dance to our tune. So my New Year Resolution is to notice good deeds – the smiles, the thank yous, the waves – how much nicer they make everybody’s world!

Mazarron gained an important 2-1 away win at Lumbreras on Saturday but will have to await the outcome of the deliberations of the Murcia FA into a major fracas two minutes from time which led to the referee apparently abandoning the game. The game started brightly with both sides trying to gain control. For Mazarron, Tolo started a move with a nice pass to Stevens which earned a corner. Then Liders should have made better use of another good ball from Tolo. Neither side were able to create any clear cut chances and the nearest to a goal came when Tolo shot over the bar and a disappointing first half ended with the teams goalless. Mazarron started the second half brightly and Stevens and Tolo combined well in a move which saw Stevens shooting over the bar. Mazarron took the lead in the 50th minute when Tolo’s free kick nestled in the bottom corner of the net with the Lumbreras keeper a mere spectator. The lead lasted only five minutes, however, when,a

Final SAMM Race Day Washed Out
Could Mayweather v Pacquiao or Khan v Brook happen in 2015?
To the great disappointment of the many competitors the final day of the 2014 SAMM Autumn Series on November 30th, had to be cancelled due to heavy rain over the Mar Menor. The series positions were therefore based on the best 8 results from the 11 races that were run, resulting in a well deserved win for the Laser 2000 ‘Shoestring Dos’ with 16.75 points, second the other Laser 2000 ‘Shoestring Tres’ with 24.75 points with the Catamaran ‘Hamour taking third place honours with 30.25 points. The next three places (see table) were very close
Three minutes later Tolo was badly fouled leaving him prostrate on the ground and tempers overflowed, resulting in an unpleasant melee involving players and Lumbreras supporters which saw the referee rushing from the pitch with the other officials .Tolo was eventually helped to the dressing room with badly bruised ribs.
Of the 10 fights on BBC Sport’s 2014 wish list, only two came off - the instantly forgettable meeting between Wladimir Klitschko and Kubrat Pulev and Carl Froch-George Groves II. And that heady night at Wembley aside, it is fair to say last year was not a vintage one for boxing. The next 12 months promise to be different, with some of the biggest and brightest stars in the boxing firmament seemingly about to collide. But promises in boxing are like promises in politics. Below are 10 fights that might happen in 2015, some of which won’t even make it to the negotiating table. Just behind with the Laser 13 ‘Shoestring Quatro’ forth keep those gloves crossed. on 31 points, the Faversham 14 fifth on 32.5 points Floyd Mayweather v Manny Pacquiao and the Balaton ‘Conny’ sixth on 35.75 points. All top boats had been sailed by various crews during the season as all were owned by ‘boat share’ groups within SAMM. Oldham are due to hold a board meeting on Monday morning and sailingmarmenor.com an announcement will be made by Tuesday afternoon. Wales international Evans is now unlikely to train with the club on Monday, as initially planned. On Sunday, Professional Footballers’ Association chief Gordon Taylor told the BBC he would not appear at a planned news conference on Monday to support the move. This news disappointed some at Oldham and has made it significantly less likely they will sign Evans. Oldham’s board believe Evans has served his time and deserves a chance to resume his career. But with thousands of people having signed an online petition against the move, the club is increasingly worried about any criticism and the response of sponsors. Evans has
years might actually happen in 2015. But with both camps likely to insist on a contract containing more clauses than the Magna Carta, nobody is holding their breath. Welterweight king Mayweather has two fights left on his deal with US network Showtime, which reportedly wants more bang for its buck than their star turn has been providing of late. But with the unbeaten American insisting on a much larger share of the purse than his Philippine rival, the other half of that bang might have to come from someone else. Probability: 2 out of 5 Floyd Mayweather v Amir Khan Which brings us to Britain’s Amir Khan. Khan thought he had landed his dream fight in 2014 before Mayweather decided to twice do battle with Marcos Maidana instead. However, two dazzling victories, over Luis Collazo and Devon Alexander, put the Bolton fighter back in the welterweight mix. The dream scenario is for five-weight world champion Mayweather to fight Pacquiao in May before taking on Khan in September. Although, assuming he beats Pacquiao, Mayweather might decide the impossibly fast and rapidly improving Khan is best avoided, especially as Mayweather has stopped only one opponent inside the distance since 2007. Oldham may pull out of Evans deal
already held talks with former club Sheffield United about a return to football, but decided against signing him. Maltese club Hibernians also offered him a deal but the Ministry of Justice said rules prevented Evans from working abroad. If Oldham signed Evans, it would not be the first time they have brought in a striker who had served a prison sentence. In 2007, they signed Lee Hughes after the former West Bromwich Albion striker had served half of a six-year prison term for causing death by dangerous driving. In November, Oldham chairman Simon Corney told BBC Radio Manchester that he felt people should be given a “second chance”. Following his release from prison, Evans was offered the use of Sheffield United’s training facilities. However, the Blades backtracked after a backlash from supporters and club patrons. More than 160,000 people also signed a petition protesting against his return. Hartlepool also ruled out signing Evans after manager Ronnie Moore suggested he was considering a deal for the Welshman. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 live’s Sportsweek programme, PFA boss Taylor indicated any deal for Evans was not yet done. “We’ve had a number of steps forward and a number of steps back,” he said. “I’m not going to count my chickens.” Evans maintains his innocence and the Criminal Cases Review Commission is currently conducting an investigation into his conviction that could take 35 weeks.
