Spain to lead new NATO rapid action force to deal with military crises
NATO secretary general Jens Stoltenberg Spain will next year lead a NATO high-readiness force that could be deployed “in just a few days” to areas where major crises break out, including parts of Ukraine where the Russian army continues to back pro-separatists groups, government officials and NATO sources said on Thursday. The decision to organize a 5,000-member rapid reaction force was made during a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels, where a Readiness Action Plan was drafted. The Spanish military will supply 4,000 of the 5,000 land troops that will make up the new advance team, which would be the first to be deployed to volatile areas,
when it heads the unit next year. “The essence of this force is its deterrent capability. NATO needs to have a unit that will show the world that its reaction can be strong and immediate,” said Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenés. The essence of this force is its deterrent capability. A group of retired people from East Anglia are among 200 people who had to be rescued after being trapped by snow on roads, in northern Spain. Angela and Charles Pugh are part of a group of about 40 people, from Norfolk and Suffolk, who got stuck on their journey from Santander to Estepona. Abandoned cars and overturned lorries have piled up on main roads near the northern city of Santander. “Spanish television said this was the worst weather for 25 years and heavy snow had also fallen on the plain,” said Mr Pugh. He praised Spanish police for rescuing them. “They did a great job in very difficult circumstances. The snow had taken everyone by surprise but they responded so well.” The couple brought warm clothes for the sea crossing from Plymouth but were expecting to be wearing
T-shirts. When they arrived on a ferry at Santander on Wednesday morning, they were told that there was “a little snow” on the roads. The group all started out on the journey to Estepona, south of Marbella but as they climbed up into the mountains, the conditions quickly worsened. Mr Pugh and his wife are trapped at an hotel in the village of Reinosa, about 45 miles (70km) south of Santander. The BBC’s Tom Burridge in Madrid says a large area of central Spain has seen an unusually high amount of snowfall in recent days. Hundreds of cars were stuck for up to 17 hours overnight on roads between Cantabria and the province of Palencia. Local media report temperatures of -15C (5F) and up 40cm (1.3ft) of snow in the region. Bbc.co.uk

Taiwan crash plane ‘lost engine power’
Black box data from the TransAsia Airlines turbo-prop plane that crashed in Taiwan has revealed that power was cut to both engines, investigators say.
Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council said the engines failed to produce enough thrust for two minutes after take-off. Data suggest that the flight crew tried to stop and restart one of the engines, without success. Flight GE235 carried 58 passengers and crew, at least 35 of whom died when the plane crashed into a river. Fifteen people survived the crash. According to investigators at a briefing in Taipei, the plane ran into trouble just 37 seconds after taking off from Taipei’s Songshan airport. Thomas Wang, director of the Aviation Safety Council, said the pilot announced a “flame-out”, which can occur when the fuel supply to the engine is interrupted or when there is faulty combustion. However, Mr Wang said there was in fact no flame-out, and the right-hand engine had actually shifted into idle mode without the oil pressure having changed. “The plane flashed a flame-out signal for one of the two engines at 10:53:28 when the plane climbed to an altitude of 1,200ft, triggering a warning,” AFP news agency quoted Mr Wang as saying. “Then the other [left] engine was shut down manually. The pilot tried to restart
the engines but to no avail.
“That means that during the flight’s final moments, neither engine had any thrust. We heard ‘Mayday’ at 10:54:35,” he added. The flight, which had been bound for Taiwan’s Kinmen Island, crashed into the Keelung River just 72 seconds later. The plane, an ATR 72-600, is able to fly with just one functioning engine. Mr Wang said it was not clear why the left engine had been shut down. Preliminary findings A more substantial report into the crash will be released within the next 30 days, ahead of the publication of a final report in the next three to six months.
SOL News quoted as saying. Crash investigators told Taiwanese media that Mr Liao’s hands were still on the plane’s controls when his body was found, Reuters reported. Both the pilot and co-pilot were found dead in the cockpit with their legs badly broken, according to local media reports. Taiwan’s aviation regulator has ordered thorough engine and fuel system checks on the remaining 22 ATR-manufactured aircraft currently in active service on the island. The BBC’s Cindy Sui in Taipei said search and rescue teams had been
focussing their efforts downstream of the crash site, and are carrying out operations along a 15-kilometre (9mile) stretch of the river. The main parts of the plane, which had been submerged, have been retrieved from the water, and divers are now attempting to locate the bodies of other victims. Search officials said on Thursday that it was extremely unlikely that any additional survivors would be found, and said that retrieval efforts had been severely hampered by poor visibility in the murky water. Bbc.co.uk
The pilot, Liao Chien-tsung, has been praised by Taipei’s mayor for managing to steer the plane away from apartment blocks and commercial buildings before it came down. Taiwanese Vice President Wu Den-yih also paid tribute the 42-year-old pilot, saying he had “meticulously grasped” the flight controls in the plane’s last few seconds in the air, according to the Associated Press news agency. “In the final moments he still wanted to control the plane to avoid harming residents in the housing communities,” he was
Ford Expands Operations in Spain
Ford announced on Thursday the final part of a 2.3 billion euro ($2.6 billion) expansion of its operations in Spain, in what it called the biggest investment ever in the country’s auto industry. The investment consists of an initial 1.1 billion euros announced in 2011, followed by
1.2 billion euros since 2013, Ford said. The investment in the Spanish plant continues a trend of auto production’s moving south in Europe, where wages tend to be lower. Around 80 percent of the Ford plant’s production is for export. nytimes.com

Mayor Jose’
Fidel Ros explained to council members, that the electrical supply contract will be renewed in 2015, when it is envisaged an additional saving of between 10 to 15% can be expected. It is the third consecutive year that the electricity bill for Pilar, has seen a reduction. The municipality, which boasts some 2000 street lamps, has also seen more urbanizations come into existence, so this reduction, in difficult times, is to be applauded. Most illuminating.

Warning over ‘listening’ TV Samsung is warning customers to avoid discussing personal information in front of their smart television set. The warning applies to TV viewers who control their Samsung Smart TV using its voice activation feature. Such TV sets “listen” to every conversation held in front of them and may share any details they hear with Samsung or third parties, it said. Privacy campaigners said the technology smacked of the telescreens, in George Orwell’s 1984, which spied on citizens. The warning came to light via a story in online news magazine the Daily Beast which published an excerpt of a section of Samsung’s privacy policy for its net-connected Smart TV sets. The policy explains that the TV set will be listening to people in the same room to try to spot when commands are issued. It goes on to warn: “If your spoken words include personal or other sensitive information, that information will be among the data captured and transmitted to a third party.” Corynne McSherry, an intellectual property lawyer for the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) which campaigns on digital rights issues, told the Daily Beast that the third party was probably the company providing speech-to-text conversion for Samsung. She added: “If I were the customer, I might like to know who that third party was, and I’d definitely like to know whether my words were being transmitted in a secure form.” Soon after, an activist for the EFF circulated the policy statement on Twitter comparing it to George Orwell’s description of the telescreens in his novel 1984 that listen to what people say in their homes. In response to the widespread sharing of its policy statement, Samsung has issued a statement to clarify how voice activation works. It said the privacy policy was an attempt to be transparent with owners in order to help them make informed choices about whether to use some

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES features on its Smart TV sets, adding that it took consumer privacy “very seriously”. Samsung said: “If a consumer consents and uses the voice recognition feature, voice data is provided to a third party during a requested voice command search. At that time, the voice data is sent to a server, which searches for the requested content then returns the desired content to the TV.” It added that it did not retain voice data or sell the audio being captured. Smart-TV owners would always know if voice activation was turned on because a microphone icon would be visible on the screen, it said. The third-party handling the translation from speech to text has not been named. Samsung is not the first maker of a smart, netconnected TV to run into problems with the data the set collects. In late 2013, a UK IT consultant found his LG TV was gathering information about his viewing habits. Publicity about the issue led LG to create a software update which ensured data collection was turned off for those who did not want to share information. Bbc.co.uk
Going live is terrifying EastEnders’s executive producer Dominic Treadwell-Collins has revealed that the prospect of the upcoming ‘live week’ of episodes fills him with terror. When asked in the new issue of Radio Times whether he’s mad for taking on such a task, he replies: “Yes, you have to be. But doing it live means we can keep all our secrets. It’s terrifying, though. All I can do now is hand the work over to actors I trust.” Next week sees the BBC mark the 30th anniversary of EastEnders with a special week of instalments, all of which will feature live footage. The question of who killed Lucy Beale will be answered, while a flashback will trace Ian’s daughter’s final movements before she met her maker. On Friday 20 February, the soap will also broadcast a fully live 30-minute episode. Asked about his reasons for going live, TreadwellCollins comments: “I was charged by Ben Stephenson [BBC controller of drama commissioning] with beating the 25th anniversary live episode. Originally, I said we were just going to tell really good stories. He humoured me for a while, but eventually he turned round and said, ‘OK, what else are you going to do?’ And that’s when I came up with the idea of the live week.” radiotimes.com

Greece’s leaders stun Europe Greece’s finance minister Yanis Varoufakis has spelled out the negotiating strategy of the Syriza government with crystal clarity. “Exit from the euro does not even enter into our plans, quite simply because the euro is fragile. It is like a house of cards. If you pull away the Greek card, they all come down,” he said. “Do we really want Europe to break apart? Anybody who is tempted to think it possible to amputate Greece strategically from Europe should be careful. It is very dangerous. Who would be hit after us? Portugal? What would happen to Italy when it discovers that it is impossible to stay within the austerity straight-jacket?” “There are Italian officials – I won’t say from which institution - who have approached me to say they support us, but they can’t say the truth because Italy is at risk of bankruptcy and they fear the consequence from Germany. A cloud of fear has been hanging over Europe over recent years. We are becoming worse than the Soviet Union,” he told the Italian TV station RAI. This earned a stiff rebuke from the Italian finance minister, Pier Carlo Padoan. “These comments are out of place. Italy’s debt is solid and sustainable,” he said. Yet the point remains. Deflationary conditions are causing interest costs to rise faster than nominal GDP in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, automatically pushing public debt ratios ever higher. Berkeley economist Barry Eichengreen warns that Grexit would be “Lehman squared”, setting off a calamitous
chain reaction with worldwide consequences. Syriza’s gamble is that the EU authorities know this, whatever officials may claim in public. Premier Alexis Tsipras is pushing this to the wire. Rightly or wrongly, he calculates that Greece holds the trump card – the detonation of mutual assured destruction, to borrow from Cold War parlance – and that all the threats from EMU power centres are mere bluster. His cool nerve has caught Brussels, Frankfurt, Berlin, and the markets off guard. They assumed that this 40-year neophyte would back away from exorbitant demands in his landmark policy speech to the Greek parliament on Sunday night. Instead they heard a declaration of war. He vowed to implement every measure in Syriza’s pre-electoral Thessaloniki Programme “in their entirety” with no ifs and buts. This even includes a legal demand for €11bn of war reparations from Germany, a full 71 years after the last Wehrmacht soldier left Greek soil. Macropolis said every item was in there: a pension rise for the poorest; no further rises in the retirement age; an increase in the minimum wage to €751 a month by 2016; a return to collective bargaining; an end to privatisation of utilities; cancellation of a new property tax (ENFIA); a rise in tax-free thresholds from €5,000 to €12,000; and a rehiring of 10,000 public workers fired “illegally”. He did not row back from his campaign rhetoric. He did not water down anything. The demand for a debt writedown has been switched to a debt-swap, but this is presentational legerdemain.

The speech puts Greece on a collision course this Wednesday with Eurogroup finance ministers, who are having great trouble coming to terms with the election of the first radical Left government in Western Europe since with this ad only the Second World War. FINISHING TOUCHES
Last week I wrote about buying the best quality furniture, mattresses and sofas that you can for your rental property to enable you to maximise the return on your investment and get as any many referrals as possible from your clients renting your properties. It always helps to have a good rental agent behind you, talk to people and listen to who is being recommended. A good agent will tell you what is required of your property to keep a good rental trade going. They will also inform you if some painting needs to be done or if something needs replacing or up grading etc. Your property may have been empty for a while for one reason or another so before your client’s arrival the property needs to be really clean, including inside the cupboards, wardrobes and drawers. Once you have done all this the little finishing touches are required. That is a bit of a list to add some comfortable touches that makes your clients stay a bit more relaxed. Do you have mirrors in the bathroom’s, long wall mirrors in the bedrooms or at least in the master bedroom and may be one in the living area. The ladies will appreciate them, no woman likes to go out just on the husband’s say so, we all know they are going to say you look great if they know what’s good for them! Besides, they just want to get to the bar as soon as possible for a beer. Mirrors also reflect light and can have the effect of making a room look bigger. Are there bedside lights as it can be annoying when you have gone to bed, been reading and have to get up and turn off the main light. A table Lamp in the living area is handy for reading in the evenings and soft lighting for those romantic moments while on holiday after the kids have gone to bed. How about some cushions on your sofas, it not only gives a homely look but your clients can make themselves more comfortable too. Talking of a homely look do you have curtain poles and curtains. They really do not need to be expensive curtains but they will add some colour against the white walls and for early spring and autumn rentals will add the feeling of warmth to the property. When buying your bed throws or bedspreads match the curtains to them so the rooms do not look a mish mash of colours. Do not buy too light a colour or they will be forever in the wash, try and use warm
looking colours, this is welcoming when your clients open the doors on their arrival. Pictures are a very personal thing but a couple in the living area and one or two in the bedrooms will again take away the bland look of the white walls. Do not forget you can also dot a few knick knacks about, not a lot or the cleaners will not be happy with you. Just enough to take away the clinical look of no one lives here. ROMAN CATHOLIC MARRIAGES These are a matter for the local Archbishop in the area of the forthcoming marriage and, in general, they require a baptism certificate and a statutory declaration by the parents of the English party to the effect that their son/daughter is single. Formalities do, however, vary significantly from parish to parish and the requirements should be checked well in advance with the local priest.
CIVIL MARRIAGES
According to information from the Civil Registry in Madrid the requirements for marrying in this country are: • A birth certificate (accompanied by a sworn translation) • Passport • Consular registration Certificate • Consular Certificate of No-Impediment to the marriage It is also a general requirement that you show you are a legal resident in Spain and this is done by providing a recently issued copy proving “empadronamiento” or registration at the local town hall.

When Concorde swooshed across the Atlantic at supersonic speeds of 1,350mph (2,170km/h), you could fly from London to New York in under four hours. It seemed as if the glamorous age of superfast aviation was here to stay. But Concorde was costly, noisy and thirsty on fuel, and was withdrawn from service in 2003, some 36 years after the first prototype rolled out of the hangar. So will supersonic passenger flight ever make a comeback? The sad truth for speed freaks is that reducing carbon dioxide emissions, rather than increasing speed, has become the new imperative for the aviation industry amid widespread concerns about global warming. This means most of the innovation is happening in the fields of engine efficiency, aerodynamics and cabin comfort. Modern passenger jets are very different beasts compared to their forebears, despite their basic shapes remaining remarkably similar. They now feature much more sophisticated avionics, lightweight composite materials, and engines that are 90 times more powerful than their 1940s predecessors, yet 70% more fuel-efficient. They are also a lot safer. Manufacturers, such as Rolls-Royce, General Electric and Pratt & Whitney, believe there’s plenty more efficiency to be squeezed out of the turbofan jet engine over the coming decades. “Our new Advanced engines coming in 2020 will incorporate carbon fibre blades with a titanium edge to counter the increased weight of the bigger engines,” says Alan Newby, Rolls-Royce’s chief engineer, future programmes and technology. Engines are getting bigger to allow more air to flow through but at slower speeds, improving fuel efficiency and reducing noise, says Mr Newby. New materials, such as “ceramic matrix composites” and “single crystal turbine alloys”, will allow engines to run at higher temperatures - in excess of 2,200C (4,000F) in some cases - which also improves efficiency. “Subsonic [under 761mph] is definitely going to be with us for a long, long time, because a driver of the future is the impact on the environment,” says Prof Jeff Jupp, fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Airlines, like car manufacturers, are also looking towards hybrid engines as a way of reducing emissions. “In the future, there is the possibility of electric propulsion, with a gaspowered engine driving the generator to create electricity,” says Prof Jupp. “Batteries would be included as a back-up for the turbofans.” In 2014, Airbus showed off an all-electric E-Fan training plane, but large-scale electric passenger planes are unlikely unless batteries can be made a lot lighter, experts believe. Such hybrid engines distributed across new aerodynamic body shapes, such as the “blended” or “flying” wing, could improve fuel efficiency even further, says Prof Jupp. Boeing, Nasa and others have been experimenting with blended wing concepts, which can reduce a plane’s total surface area by 25% to reduce drag and save fuel. They are not without problems, however - the lack of tail fin makes them inherently less stable - but fly-by-wire computers could help iron this out, engineers believe. Perhaps the most radical innovation in aviation, though, is happening inside the cabin. For example, Spike Aerospace has talked about getting rid of windows completely and replacing them with digital screens relaying camera images of the view outside or any other media the passenger wants. Removing windows would reduce the weight of the aircraft and improve aerodynamics, the company believes. And the general trend is towards wireless connectivity and interactive displays, says Jared Shoemaker of BAE Systems, although this will present extra security challenges. “Traditionally, cabins have been closed worlds not connected to anything outside,” says Mr Shoemaker, director of cabin systems.

Keeping your heart healthy!
Keeping your heart healthy, whatever your age, is the most important thing you can do to help prevent and manage heart disease. Healthy Eating
A healthy diet can help reduce your risk of developing coronary heart disease and stop you gaining weight, reducing your risk of diabetes and high blood pressure. It can also help lower cholesterol levels and reduce your risk of some cancers. Even if you already have a heart condition, a healthy diet can benefit your heart. Try to eat: • plenty of fruit and vegetables • plenty of starchy foods such as bread, rice, potatoes and pasta. Choose wholegrain varieties wherever possible • some milk and dairy products • some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein • only a small amount of foods and drinks high in fats and/or sugar. Choose options that are lower in fat, salt and sugar

whenever you can.
Keep Active You’ll soon feel the benefits when you become more active. You’ll feel fitter, have more energy, be more relaxed and have more confidence. Set yourself realistic goals that are specific and achievable. For example, set a goal to walk 30 minutes every day or learn how to swim. Remember, everyday activities count, so look out for opportunities to be active during the day. For example, use the stairs instead of the escalators, walk to the local shop rather than taking the car and do some stretches when watching TV. Every ten minutes counts! Involve friends and family to make activities more fun, sociable and enjoyable. Go jogging with a friend and support and motivate each other, take the children swimming or join an exercise class. Prompt yourself to be more physically active by keeping reminders around the house. Put Post-it notes on the fridge door or by the kettle, place your cycling helmet on your dressing table or put your walking shoes near the door. . You can use a pedometer to count the number of steps you walk each day. It’s easy to use. All you need is a good pair of shoes and you are ready to take a step in the right direction, so you can push yourself to go that bit further next time you exercise. Walking is an ideal activity as it’s free and easy to do anywhere. Recognise when you achieve your goals. Think

of things that you could reward yourself with, like a copy of your favourite magazine, a new pair of trainers or a massage. Manage your weight! Research shows that reaching and keeping to a healthy weight cuts your risk of heart disease because it helps prevent and manage conditions like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes that put you at greater risk of coronary heart disease. Even if you don’t have any of these conditions, it’s important to keep to a healthy weight so you don’t develop them in future.
Smoking! Quitting smoking is the single best thing you can do for your heart health. If you’re a smoker, stopping smoking is the single most important step you can take to protect the health of your heart. Smokers are almost twice as likely to have a heart attack compared with people who have never smoked. Stopping smoking has huge benefits and it’s never too late to give up.
Alcohol! Drinking more than the recommended amount of alcohol can have a harmful effect on your heart and general health. It can cause abnormal heart rhythms, high blood pressure and cause damage to your heart muscle and other diseases such as stroke, liver problems and some cancers. Alcohol is also high in calories so it can lead to weight gain. It also lowers your inhibitions which might mean you find it harder to stick to your healthy eating plans when you have been drinking.
Stress Stress is not a direct risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but it’s possible that it may contribute to your risk level. It all depends on your coping mechanisms. Some people cope with stress with risky behaviour – such as smoking , drinking too much alcohol and overeating. All of these increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Courtyard Living A courtyard is the garden living area that comes closest to being a true outdoor room. These elegant spaces provide the ultimate in privacy
Adding a New Courtyard... If your home is already built, add a courtyard onto the existing house structure. The only costs you will incur are for one wall (the one that will no longer be shared with the rest of the house) and maybe a hallway required to connect the new structure to the existing house. You can then enclose the courtyard using a fence or dense hedge; then, of course, there is the cost of the courtyard itself.
If you plan to add a courtyard, consider how it is oriented to the sun and how you will enter and exit from the house and garden. The more entries, the more you are likely to use the space. Be sure the courtyard paving, no matter the material used, drains away from the house. Also consider ways to provide a partial canopy by extending the rafters of the roof over the new structure.

Consider the following design aspects when refurbishing an existing courtyard.
Construction of Pergolas
Enclosure: A distinguishing characteristic of a courtyard is having the space feel as though it has four “solid” walls. Solid is more visual than literal. A vinecovered trellis or a hedge may close in a small space (perhaps less than 10 feet square) without making it feel claustrophobic. An open roof or canopy adds even more sense of enclosure. Whatever structure you use should allow plenty of light into the courtyard so there is no mistaking its feeling of welcome. A retractable awning is one way to add enclosure. A temporary roof that covers the courtyard completely in winter also extends the time you can use the area and protects the plants within. Styles: The style and look of the courtyard is to some extent predetermined by the walls that define it. However, these walls can be altered to create the setting you want.
Fencing Terraces Gazebos
Scale: An aspect of design you do have control over is scale. The absence of a roof makes the space feel bigger than it is. A grouping of tables and chairs that feels comfortable on an open patio may look cramped in a walled courtyard. Scale also comes into play when selecting plants. In terms of both design and horticulture, it works better to have fewer, larger pots than many little pots that dry out quickly and blow over.
Enhancing an Existing Courtyard... If your home is already built, plan a courtyard when adding onto the house. This may not add as much Views: The main concern for a courtyard is usually cost to the project as you might think. For example, the view into it rather than out of it. As you design, when adding a study, extra bedroom, or even an examine views from any windows (including those attached garage, you can add the same structure overhead) and doors that enter the courtyard. Also, 15 or 20 feet from the house. The additional costs you will incur are for one wall (the one that will no if you have an attractive view from the courtyard, longer be shared with the rest of the house) and consider cutting a window in a wall of the courtyard the hallway required to connect the new structure to frame it. to the existing house. You can then enclose the courtyard using a fence or dense hedge. Then, of course, there is the cost of the courtyard • 39 years experience in soft furnishings & re-upholstery itself.

SOLTIMES february 2015
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. I was watching the adverts between a program’s segments when I saw this advert for ‘Which’ Magazine, in which they were offering ‘Free’ advice about various everyday computing activities (Backing up file and System, AntiVirus, AntiMalware). This got me thinking about writing an article on one of these subjects. After several hours reading previous articles I found that ALL these subjects had been covered. So for today, I will offer advice about WHAT computer you should buy! Before I start, there will be some of you, with very long memories, that will say “Trev, you’ve already done that!’. This is true but it has been a question that I’ve been asked a number of time recently, and usually, I give the same answers. These answers are in the form of questions. What are these questions? 1. What do you want to use the computer for (Skype, Emails, browsing the web, watching English TV over the Internet, something much more serious)? Reason: In ascending order of usefulness – Smartphone, Phablet(more than a phone, but less than a tablet), Tablet (7”), Tablet (10”), WebBook / Notebook, Laptop (Entry Level), Laptop (Professional) or finally Desktop / Tower. Anything before “more serious” will result in options before Desktop/Tower. 2. Are you likely to want to take it travelling with you? Reason: Size and portability! Removes Tower / Desktop and larger Laptops from the equation. 3. How large / small is your budget? Reason: Not everyone is related to the Rothschild family and money has to be budgeted closely! Possible answers – “Never enough”; “Don’t be nosey”; or even
a sensible value :-) 4. When do you want it for? Reason: You can get some real bargains over the internet but as always ‘Buyer Beware’ and might take several days to several weeks. Your local computer supplier can sell you what you want off the shelf or get it for you within a week. Also, if anything goes wrong with your purchase, it is much easier to take it to the shop and get it sorted quickly and easily! So my simple rules for buying new technology are: Rule #1: Answer all the question above with complete honesty Rule #2: Re-read your answers as they will point to the best computer that you want. Rule #3: Don’t let the sales person sell you anything that you didn’t want or ask for! They want to sell the most expensive equipment they can. Rule #4 If all the above fail you “Ask Trev”! I would suspect, for the greatest number of readers, that an entry level Laptop (minimum memory (2GB’s), Medium Storage (350-500GB’s) will be more than adequate for the next 4-5 years), OR a better quality Tablet (Not Necessarily iPad!) will fulfil all these needs and have ‘boot’ to spare! Why do I ask questions about your motivation for buying a computer? Quite simple! Unlike the shops that are wanting to sell you the product with the greatest profit for them, and as I generally make nothing for this advice, I will find out what you really NEED and then direct you towards a selection of products that will suit you. Contact me for free advice concerning your computer or tablet at the address or phone number below.

The brilliant Nikola Tesla
Tesla was born in 1856 in what is now Croatia; he was so academically gifted, that aged 14 his teachers suspected him of cheating as he’d work out complex sums in his head. In just three years he finished the usually four year long course. He was then bedridden for 9 months with cholera and when he recovered; ran away to avoid conscription into the Army. At Vienna Polytechnic he studied from 3am to 11pm most days. In later years Tesla admitted to never having more than 2 hours sleep a night. He excelled in his first year though his family were warned he would die from overwork. Then he argued with his tutors and got addicted to gambling, losing then winning back his allowance and tuition fees. By examination time he hadn’t studied; was refused an extension and left without graduating. In 1882 Tesla worked for the Edison Company in France. He relocated with the company to New York a couple of years later; but his money was stolen and he arrived penniless. He started work for Thomas Edison who allegedly offered him $50,000 if he could fix all the problems with
UK planning for possible Greece exit from the eurozone
The prime minister this Monday morning chaired a meeting of senior officials to discuss the impact on the UK of possible Greek exit from the eurozone - and to take steps to ensure British banks and companies would not be excessively damaged. Attended by the head of the Treasury, Nick Macpherson, the Treasury's director of financial stability, Lowrie Kahn, and the Bank of England's international director Phil Evans, David Cameron asked for information on the impact on Greece and the rest of the eurozone of Greece leaving the eurozone. The chancellor did not attend, because he is on his way to the G20 meeting in Istanbul - though he has been kept in the loop on discussions. There was agreement that the probability of Greece adopting a new currency had increased, as per my column of this morning. However those attending still believe that some kind of compromise between Athens and other eurozone governments can be reached to keep Greece in the euro. David Cameron heard that Greek people would see their savings wiped out, inflation would take off, and there would be a massive devaluation, He was also told that Greek companies and banks would face acute financial difficulties because of the mismatch between the "hard" euros they would owe to those outside Greece which would have to be serviced out of "soft" or "devaluing" new drachmas. So any British businesses and banks owed money by Greek businesses or individuals would struggle to get their money back. However the direct exposure of British banks to Greece is relatively small. Perhaps the bigger issue for the UK would be contagion from a Greek exit to other weaker eurozone economies - and the risk that they would suffer acute outflows of capital, which would further undermine their financial and economic stability. A government source said that the eurozone remained hugely important to the UK as its most important trading partner, and so it is sensible for the prime minister to plan in case the Greek crisis were to worsen and exit could not be avoided. bbc.co.uk

Former pop star Gary Glitter convicted
British former pop star Gary Glitter has been found guilty of child sex abuse for crimes he committed more than three decades ago. The 70-year-old Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was convicted Thursday of one count of attempted rape of a girl under the age of 13, one count of having sex with a girl under the age of 13, and four counts of indecent assault against girls, two aged under 13 and two aged under 16. The six offenses were committed against three victims between 1975 and 1980. Glitter is due to be sentenced on February 27. Glitter was known as a “glam rocker” in the 1970s for his flamboyant clothes and performing style. He sold 18 million records with hits like “I’m the Leader of the Gang,” “I Love You Love Me Love” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Detective Chief Inspector Michael Orchard of London’s Metropolitan Police praised the courage of the victims in coming forward to police; years after the crimes were committed, in a statement after the verdict. “Paul Gadd has shown himself to be a habitual sexual predator, who took advantage of the star status afforded to him by targeting young girls who trusted him and were in awe of his fame,” Orchard said. “His lack of remorse and defence that the victims were lying make his

Glitter has been prosecuted previously on sex charges. In 1999, he admitted possessing child pornography and was jailed for four months. While living in Vietnam, he was convicted of sex offenses against young girls and jailed for nearly three years before being deported to England. Glitter is the latest celebrity to be accused or convicted of historic sex offenses. Radio and television star Jimmy Savile, who died in 2011 aged 84, was revealed after his death to have been one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders. British police say more than 200 victims -aged between five and 75 -- have been identified. Last year celebrity publicist Max Clifford was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for assaults on girls, while Australian entertainer Rolf Harris was jailed for five years for indecent assaults against four girls. simulation revealing dark matter density in the universe galaxy. Dark matter, which pervades our universe, is difficult to see because it barely interacts with ordinary matter except through gravity. Since the 1970s, scientists have found evidence of this elusive substance in other galaxies by measuring the rotation speed of gas and stars. Now scientists have, for the first time, used the same technique to provide proof of dark matter in the innermost part of the Milky Way. Measuring the rotation of gas and stars allows astronomers to effectively ‘weigh’ the host galaxy and find out its total mass. These measurements showed that the visible matter only accounts for a fraction of the total weight - the predominant part is delivered by dark matter. Applying this technique to our own galaxy is possible, and the existence of dark matter in the outer parts of the Milky Way is well known. But up until now it has proven very difficult to use this technique in the innermost regions of our galaxy, which is around 100,000 light years across. Now scientists led by the Technical University of Munich have found direct observational proof of the presence of dark matter in the innermost part the Milky Way, including at the Earth’s location and in our own ‘cosmic neighbourhood’. In a first step they created the most
and stars in the Milky Way. Then they compared the measured rotation speed with that expected under the assumption that only luminous matter exists in the galaxy. The comparison clearly showed that the rotation cannot be explained unless large amounts of dark matter exist around us, and between us and the galactic heart. ‘We know that dark matter is needed in our Galaxy to keep the stars and gas rotating at their observed speeds,’ says Dr Miguel Pato, who conducted the analysis at Technical University of Munich. ‘However, we still do not know what dark matter is composed of. ‘This is one of the most important science questions of our times.’ The scientists say that with future astronomical observations, the method will allow to measure the distribution of dark matter in our galaxy with unprecedented precision. ‘This will permit to refine the understanding of the structure and evolution of our galaxy,’ says Dr Pato. ‘And it will trigger more robust predictions for the many experiments worldwide that search for dark matter particles’. bbc.co.uk

UK property marketthe‘still has punch’ market.”
UK house prices rose 2% in January, according to the latest data from the Halifax, and the market still has plenty of punch, says an investment specialist. The January rise was the biggest January monthly increase since 2009. Average prices rose 8.5% year-onyear and 1.9% over the last quarter to £193,130. Housing Economist, Martin Ellis, says, “This bounce-back in house price growth in January coincides with reports of the first rise in mortgage approvals for six months in December. These improvements may indicate that the recent declines in mortgage rates, the reform of stamp duty and the first increases in real earnings for several years are providing a modest boost to
But he warned that January’s figures can be volatile and price rises in 2015, which is an election year, are likely to be lower than in 2014. “We expect the overall downward trend in house price growth seen since last summer to continue over the coming months. Nationally, house prices are predicted to increase in a range of 3 to 5% in 2015 compared with 8% last year.” Rob Weaver, Director of Investments, for property crowdfunding platform Property Partner, says although the property market has slowed compared to a year ago, it still has some punch and is unlikely to underperform. http://www.opp.today/
Google has just launched an online mortgage calculator which allows anyone to calculate how much it will cost them to become a home owner. This new tool has so far only been introduced in the United States, but is set to expand into other countries, including Spain, very soon. The mortgage calculator is a function that is available directly on the search engine and it works both on desktop browsers and mobile devices. The new tool was tested for the first time last year, with a small number of users, but it is now being made more widely available. Users can consult the Google mortgage calculator to find out how much they will have to pay, on various housing prices and interest rates, and get answers without having to access an independent site.Cinco Días reported that this service is easily accessed by typing “mortgage
calculator” directly into the search engine. The user will then be provided with a set of fields to fill in, such as the mortgage amount, the interest rate and the term in years to pay off the loan. From that information, the Google tool will calculate the total cost of the mortgage and the cost of the monthly payments. Google also allows the settings of the tool to be changed in order to calculate how much of a mortgage loan the user can request, depending on the level of monthly payments they can afford to pay, and thus enables them to search for a home which meets those requirements. It is also possible to adjust the interest rate and the length of the mortgage repayment term. cnbc.com

Solar ‘generators’ power up remote homes
As darkness falls, Dora Mjungu and her two brothers cram themselves around the faint flame of a kerosene lamp, struggling to finish their homework before their mother blows out the lamp to save the fuel cost. ”I don’t dare to go to bed before getting it done. If I did, I would rather stay at home because my teacher would be mad at me and hit me hard as if she was killing a snake,” said Mjungu, as the lamp, made from a used cooking oil tin, cast scary shadows on the sitting room walls. For years, 14-year-old Mjungu, a pupil at Usinge primary school in remote Tura village in Tanzania’s Tabora region, has been trying to convince her mother to buy a Chinese-made solar lamp, which would not emit smoke that makes
her cough. Her mother says pupils have long survived studying by firelight or even moonlight, and “circumstances are such that I cannot afford any other kind of lamp.”But their household will soon be among hundreds to benefit from a new governmentrun solar power project, intended to bring electricity off-grid areas of rural Tanzania. More than 840 households - and, crucially, small factories - in Tabora, Dodoma and Katavi regions so far have been connected to solar grid systems, in which large numbers of solar panels feed batteries housed in shipping containers, with the power then carried out to the community on distribution lines similar to those used by Tanesco, the state-run
power utility. “I am very happy to be part of this project. I hope my children will now spend more time studying in bright light and they will no longer suffer from the smoke,” said Mjungu’s mother, Mama Dora. Edward Ishengoma, an altenative energy commissioner in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, said 14 solar containers, each with the capacity to supply electricity to 60 households or businesses, have been installed by Elektro Merl, an Austrian firm, at a cost of 13 billion Tanzanian shillings, or $6 million. Chinese firm Chicco has also been contracted to supply solar units. The funds, which come from a loan from Austria’s government to Tanzania, include maintenance and repairs for five years, officials said. The project aims to reach people in remote villages not covered by the country’s Rural Energy Agency projects, Ishengoma said. After the pilot phase of the project ends in July this year, he said, the government plans to install 600 more solar “generators” in villages around the country. “People can also use these solar generators for their economic activities since they contain power outlets that can be connected to simple machines such as water pumps and welding,” he said. “We hope that they will find them useful and improve their life.” Styden Rwebangila, the solar project’s coordinator, said the government hopes to connect solar
www.soltimes.com power to schools, health centres and churches as well as part of its development initiative called Big Results Now. The solar generators “are very powerful,” he said. SOLAR SAWMILL Salum Maulid, who runs a small sawmill in Tura village, said the solar generator in his village - which sits a stone’s throw away from his home - is now powering the machines he uses in his work. “It has really simplified my work; I get enough power to run the drills and electric saws,” he said. The new solar energy access is currently being provided free of charge, government officials said, though arrangements are being made to ensure users contribute something to cover the project’s ongoing costs. Similar projects are being implemented in Senegal, Mali, Cameroon and Gambia, officials said. Tanzania has a very low level of electricity consumption per capita, with only 18 percent of the country currently connected to traditional grid power, according to the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. While diesel generators provide power in many unconnected areas, they can be expensive and polluting, experts say, noting that renewable energy offers a cheaper and less polluting alternative, once systems are in place. trust.org

Growing Mediterranean fruits successfully The potential
There is an enormous number of types and varieties of fruit that can be grown under Mediterranean climate conditions ranging from soft fruits to grapes and temperate and sub-tropical climate fruit trees. Even tropical fruits are possible in the warmer south facing frost free spots. In our best selling book ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’ we describe over seventy types and have grown half ourselves in a 350 metre above sea level valley some dozen kilometres from the Mediterranean sea shore. For those who live in apartments many trees , especially if dwarf varieties or more vigorous varieties grafted to dwarfing root stocks can be grown successfully in containers. There is a special chapter about this in the book ‘Apartment Gardening - Mediterranean style’.
Micro-climate problems
The main constraint is the micro-climate of your garden or orchard. Mediterranean climate conditions are generally described as hot summers and cold winters with most rain in the spring and autumn. But this can vary tremendously in reality. We have experienced temperatures from one offs plus 47 degrees centigrade down to a wind factor minus 15. The latter was when we had the coldest week in our area for fifty years in March 2005. It was the end of our most tender fruit trees including a productive mango tree and couple of carefully nurtured pineapple plants. Normally our temperatures range from 35 down to minus one or two but on the coast this would be 38 down to 2 degrees. Our land faces south and has long hours of sunshine all year round but just 800 metres away properties on the north facing slopes of the valley have few hours sunshine and very heavy frosts every winter. Re rain we have had just 400 mm of rain in a year up to 650 mm in a day in November 1996.

Seven success factors for fruit trees
1. That you take note of the drought and frost resistances of each type of fruit before you decide what to try growing. This information is provided in the book ‘Growing healthy fruit in Spain’. 2. That you prepare large planting holes and work well rotted manures and compost into the planting soil. 3. That young trees are firmly staked until the guy-rope roots are fully developed. 4. That you keep root balls damp but not wet until deep tap roots have been out down. 5. That annual winter pruning is carried out to stimulate fruiting buds and ensure that most sap goes to these branches. 6. That trees are sprayed at the appropriate times of year with ecological insecticides fungicides and foliar feeds. 7. That fruit is harvested branch by branch when ripe, not all as once generally when under-ripe as is done by many commercial growers.

GlaxoSmithKline, Vodafone & BT show strength
Buy GlaxoSmithKline shares, Questor advised in the Sunday Telegraph. Concerns about a Chinese corruption scandal weighed down the shares in the past year but annual results on February 4th showed signs that things were looking up for the drugmaker. Market share for respiratory drugs in the US is reviving and Glaxo is planning to spin off its HIV business. The shares look cheap, trading on 16 times forecast earnings, which is a 20% discount to European peers. The 5.5% prospective dividend yield is also attractive, as are new drugs and Glaxo’s deal to form a consumer health joint venture with Novartis. GlaxoSmithKline may have found a long-term cure for its ills, Simon Duke said in the Sunday Times’s Inside the City column. After a bad year afflicted by a scandal in China, investors think the group is bouncing back. Chief executive Andrew Witty said there was “very cool stuff” in Glaxo’s labs, especially in immuno-oncology. Stick with shares of Vodafone, Questor recommended in the Sunday Telegraph. The mobile phone group is spending the cash from its sale of Verizon Wireless wisely, strengthening its position in Europe and improving customer service. The company has seen improving trends in Europe such as slowing revenue declines in Germany, its biggest market. It is also working on outflanking rivals by upgrading its network. Vodafone could be a takeover target for a US group and the shares, with a 4.8% dividend yield, are a solid hold. Steer clear of BT shares, Simon Duke advised in the Sunday Times. Chief executive Gavin Patterson has been on a spending spree that would normally unnerve investors. BT has agreed to pay £12.5bn for mobile network EE, plugged a £1.5bn pension deficit hole and lodged a big bid for Premier League football

rights. The shares have risen recently and Patterson cannot avoid any slips so they should be avoided, the Inside the City columnist said. Patterned wallpaper and furniture fabrics are back in fashion and that has benefited Walker Greenbank, Midas said in the Mail on Sunday. The tipster recommended the shares at 50.75p in September 2007 and they are now valued at 193p. Chief Executive John Sach has done well by targeting the high end of the UK market and now he wants to increase overseas sales. Early signs from the revamped New York showroom are promising. Investors who stuck with the shares through the financial crisis should hold on unless they need the cash. New investors could buy on short-term weakness too. Wine lovers and adventurous share buyers may want to invest in Domaine Chanzy but they should be cautious, Midas said in the Mail on Sunday. Domaine Chanzy produces Burgundy and is selling shares on the AIM market. Investors buying more than 1,000 shares at 120p each will get big discounts on the company’s wine. It is using crowdfunding to raise the money. The company has novelty value and its boss, former private equity executive Philippe der Megreditchian, seems sensible, but the wine industry is volatile so do not bet too much on the shares. The Essential Alqueria: A holiday guide
Firstly, congratulations on choosing Alqueria for your next holiday experience and secondly well done with the purchase of this travel guide which will enhance your stay in our wonderful country. OK let’s get the numbers out of the way before we tell you of the wonders you have in store. Alqueria is an independent republic situated on the Iberian Peninsular and is completely encircled by mainland Spain. It is a village of some eight hundred souls. It sits in the Alquerian Valley at the foot of the Sierra Alhamilla. The currency is the Raro. At the time of going to press there are 25,478 Raros to the Euro. It isn’t however necessary to buy the local currency as Euros, Dollars, Pounds Stirling, gold and prescription drugs are readily accepted. The climate of Alqueria is as warm as its people. Potential visitors suffering from respiratory problems should however consult their physicians before travelling. A further note regarding the warmth of the people. Manuela is especially warm and wives are recommended to keep at least a hundred metres separation between her and their respective husbands. Night life in Alqueria is second to none. Whether you dance to the Syncopation Four with Sanchez Malnota at the Bar La Casa Devante or bop the night away to the pulsating sound of the Constipation Five at the La Golondrina Verde you won’t be disappointed. One legal rider to Alqueria’s night life. Being on the streets after ten invalidates any duty of care owed to the traveller by the Alquerian government, travel agents, couriers, in fact everyone really. The cuisine of the Village is singular to say the least. One particular dish, ‘The Alquerian Plato’ has defied analysis by the world’s health authorities despite many years of trying. People who have enjoyed
the meal report minimal psychological change and only a moderate loss of stomach lining. So go on give it a go! It’s worth it, honest! The delightful Río Verde offers the visitor a chance to unwind on its shaded banks or take a dip in its buoyant and wonderfully translucent water. The variety of wildlife is astonishing and specialised species abound in the refreshing depths of the River. Please note that cases of Polydactyly has never definitely been traced to swimming in the Río Verde. Regular ferias take place in Alqueria and due to high spirits and the sheer exuberance of life they can get a little boisterous. Brick throwing and fire bombing are charming elements of these celebrations. These festivals can be viewed in complete safety from one of the many concrete bunkers built for that very purpose. So have we whetted your appetite for a holiday in Alqueria? Come soon and we hope you return many times.
for the US ‘may supply arms to Ukraine’ West crisis.
blamed the
President Barack Obama says the US is studying the option of supplying lethal defensive arms to Ukraine if diplomacy fails to end the crisis in the east. Russia had violated “every commitment”
made in the failing Minsk agreement, he added, after talks with the German chancellor on a new peace deal. Mr Obama has come under pressure from senior US officials to supply arms, despite objections from Angela Merkel. Russia denies accusations of sending troops and supplying the rebels. The latest diplomatic efforts come amid renewed fighting between the pro-Russia rebels and Ukrainian government troops, with fighting centred around the strategic railway hub of Debaltseve. The rebels said on Monday they had cut off a key supply road to the town, which is near the rebel-held city of Donetsk, but the military says the battle is ongoing. Ukrainian government officials say nine soldiers and at least seven civilians have been killed in fighting over the last 24 hours. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is considering the peace proposals, earlier
The crisis in Ukraine has already claimed more than 5,300 lives and displaced 1.5 million people from their homes. Mrs Merkel met the US president in Washington on Monday to update him on Franco-German efforts to revive last year’s Minsk peace plan, which collapsed amid fighting over the winter. The detailed proposals have not been released but the plan is thought to include a demilitarised zone of 50-70km (31-44 miles) around the current front line.Speaking alongside the German chancellor, President Obama said the option of lethal defensive weapons for the Ukrainian government remained on the table. “If, in fact, diplomacy fails, what I’ve asked my team to do is to look at all options,” he said, adding that offering lethal arms was only one of the options under consideration. Mrs Merkel, who has made it clear she opposes sending lethal arms, acknowledged setbacks in efforts to reach a diplomatic solution with Russia over Ukraine, but said that they would continue.Meanwhile Mr Obama criticised Russian aggression in Ukraine, saying that the borders of Europe could not be “redrawn at the barrel of a gun”. But this Russian aggression had reinforced the unity of the US and its European allies, he added. EU foreign ministers in Brussels agreed on Monday to impose further sanctions against Russian and rebel officials, but have put them on hold for a week to give the peace efforts a chance. Mr Putin earlier said Western countries had broken pledges not to expand Nato and forced countries to choose between
The Wrong Day
They arrived 4 years ago, and ever since they have been sitting silently against our back wall, quiescent but ever present. The cats use them as stepping stones, birds like to hop around on them looking for creepy crawlies, while the creepy crawlies themselves hide in the many nooks and crannies created by their knobbly shapes. All this they tolerate with omniscient calm; they know that their moment will come. Every time I pass the back of the house I am aware of their existence. They know me, but they wait, as enduring as time itself, for the day of Armageddon. Armageddon arrived last week. ‘We’ll have to do something about them.’ Pete said. ‘They’ve got to go.’ ‘Well, I’m not going to touch them unless I have adequate armament.’ I insisted. ‘I’m not tangling with them unless I have the appropriate weaponry.’ Pete looked at them, and looked at me, a somewhat over-the-hill example of the fair sex. It was obvious that when battle was met I would be as effective as a hamster against a pack of Rottweilers, so we betook ourselves off to search for suitably lethal mechanical back-up. Armed, but not yet dangerous, we returned. We had found and purchased the wherewithal to overcome their superior mass, but only after hand-to-hand combat had begun. We now needed something to give us the edge, to allow us to seize the initiative and bring them to heel. This was a bit trickier, and involved several trips to various Ferreterias, an apparently random selection of bits and pieces and quite a lot of angle grinding before the Containment Contraption was declared fit for

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk purpose. Now we were ready. We approached the field of battle dressed in clothes that could be chucked out if the confrontation got bloody, and carrying the means with which to defeat the implacable enemy and ascertain our victory. All in all, the encounter went very well. I took advantage of the element of surprise and grappled fearlessly with each one in turn, grasping it in both hands and inserting it into the Containment Contraption before it had time to mount an adequate defence. Once subjugated, Pete set about carving each Monster into several pieces, before stepping back so that I could remove the chunks of exMonster before grabbing and inserting the next one. When victory had been declared, and as we were putting the chainsaw away Pete said ‘Next time we’ll get smaller logs.’ I agreed. ‘Good idea. Be much easier.’

In comments to an Egyptian newspaper, Mr Putin accused Western states of supporting a “coup d’etat in Kiev” - a reference to the ousting of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych last year.
US Secretary of State John Kerry has denied any rift with EU leaders, stating that they remained “united” and were “working closely together”.
He lost power amid protests over his decision to scrap a deal that would have seen Ukraine establish closer ties with the European Union.
A ceasefire signed by Ukraine and proRussian separatist rebels on 5 September 2014 in Minsk, Belarus
Since then, Russia has annexed Ukraine’s Crimea Peninsula and rebels in the east have sought to establish full control over the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk. Germany’s peace efforts were sharply criticised by senior US Republicans who attended an international security conference in Munich over the weekend. Senator Lyndsey Graham, who attended with Senator John McCain, said: “At the end of the day, to our European friends, this is not working. You can go to Moscow until you turn blue in the face. Stand up to what is clearly a lie and a danger.” Mr McCain said: “The Ukrainians are being slaughtered and we’re sending them blankets
What was the Minsk agreement?
They agreed to 12 points including pulling back heavy guns by at least 15km (9 miles), releasing prisoners, allowing access to international observers, and setting up a buffer zone on the Russia-Ukraine border. Foreign mercenaries were to withdraw and Donetsk and Luhansk would get wider self-ruleBut military clashes never entirely stopped. Each side accused the other of violating the deal and violence later flared the length of the ceasefire line Rebels also held their own local elections in November 2014, in defiance of Kiev. The government responded by saying it would scrap partial autonomy for Donetsk and Luhansk bb.co.uk

The History of Pancake Day
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent the 40 days leading up to Easter - was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today. Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. In 2015 Shrove Tuesday will fall on the 17th February. Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients. A pancake is a thin, flat cake, made of batter and fried in a frying pan. A traditional English pancake is very thin and is served immediately. Golden syrup or lemon juice and caster sugar are the usual toppings for pancakes. The pancake has a very long history and featured in cookery books as far back as 1439. The tradition of tossing or flipping them is almost as old: “And every man and maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne.” (Pasquil’s Palin, 1619). The ingredients for pancakes can be seen to symbolize four points of significance at this time of year: Eggs ~ Creation Flour ~ The staff of life Salt ~ Wholesomeness Milk ~ Purity To make 8 or so pancakes you will need 8oz plain flour, 2 large eggs, 1 pint milk, salt. Mix all together and whisk well. Leave to stand for 30 minutes. Heat a little oil in a frying pan, pour in enough batter to cover the base of the pan and let it cook until the base of the pancake has browned. Then shake the pan to loosen the pancake and flip the pancake over to brown the other side. In the UK, pancake races form an important part of the Shrove Tuesday celebrations - an opportunity for large numbers of people, often in fancy dress, to race down streets tossing pancakes. The object of the race is to get to the finishing line first, carrying a frying pan with a cooked pancake in it and flipping the pancake as you run. The most famous pancake race takes place at Olney in Buckinghamshire. According to tradition, in 1445 a woman of Olney heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to the church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan. The Olney pancake race is now world famous. Competitors have to be local housewives and they must wear an apron and a hat or scarf. Each contestant has a frying pan containing a hot pancake. She must toss it three times during the race. The first woman to complete the course and arrive at the church, serve her pancake to the bell ringer and be kissed by him is the winner.

Wonderfully sweet with firm and creamy flesh, bananas come prepackaged in their own yellow jackets and are available for harvest throughout the year. The banana plant grows 10 to 26 feet and belongs to the Musaceae family of plants along with plantains. The cluster of fruits contain anywhere from 50 to 150 bananas with individual fruits grouped in bunches, known as "hands," containing 10 to 25 bananas. Health Benefits Creamy, rich, and sweet, bananas are a favorite food for everyone from infants to elders. They could not be more convenient to enjoy, and they are a good source of both vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber. Cardiovascular Health A first type of cardiovascular benefit from bananas is related to their potassium content. Bananas are a good source of potassium, an essential mineral for maintaining normal blood pressure and heart function. Since one medium-sized banana contains a whopping 400-plus mg of potassium, the inclusion of bananas in your routine meal plan may help to prevent high blood pressure and protect against atherosclerosis. The effectiveness of potassium-rich foods such as bananas in lowering blood pressure has been demonstrated by a number of studies. For example, researchers tracked over 40,000 American male health professionals over four years to determine the effects of diet on blood pressure. Men who ate diets higher in potassium-rich foods, as well as foods high in magnesium and cereal fiber, had a substantially reduced risk of stroke. We’ve also seen numerous prospective clinical research trials showing substantial reductions of blood pressure in individuals eating the potassium-rich DASH Diet. A second type of cardiovascular benefit from bananas involves their sterol content. While bananas are a very low-fat food (less than 4% of their calories come from fat), one type of fat that they do contain in small amounts are sterols like sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol. As these sterols look structurally similar to cholesterol, they can block the absorption of dietary cholesterol. By blocking absorption, they help us keep our blood cholesterol levels in check. A third type of cardiovascular benefit from bananas involves their fiber content. At about 3 grams per medium banana, we rank bananas as a good source of fiber. Approximately one-third of the fiber in bananas is watersoluble fiber. For one medium-sized banana, this amount translates into 1 gram of soluble fiber per banana. Soluble fiber in food is a type of fiber especially associated with decreased risk of heart disease, making regular intake of bananas a potentially helpful approach to lowering your heart disease risk. Digestive Benefits Bananas are a fascinating fruit in terms of their carbohydrate and sugar content. Even though bananas are a fruit that tastes quite sweet when ripe—containing 14-15 grams of total sugar—bananas receive a rating of low in their glycemic index (GI) value. GI measures the impact of a food on our blood sugar. This low GI value for bananas is most likely related to two of their carbohydrate-related qualities. First, as mentioned previously, a medium-size banana contains about 3 grams of total fiber. Fiber is a nutrient that helps regulate the speed

favourite fruits and let everyone help themselves. 7. Breakfast bacon and egg Thin and limp not your thing? Throw mashed potato into the mix for chunky pancakes - you'll still get all the fun of the traditional prep but they'll be much nicer with a breakfast topping of bacon and egg. 8. Buttermilk pancakes Fast becoming a firm favourite of those who take their pancakes seriously - buttermilk is the secret ingredient in James Martin's indulgent delights, which are more than worthy of their five stars. 9. Vegetable Make a meal of your crêpes by setting out bowls of your favourite veggies, herbs and spices and getting everyone to wrap and roll - our spicy vegetable fajita recipe should give you some ideas to get you started... 10. of digestion, and by keeping digestion well-regulated, conversion of carbohydrates to simple sugars and release of simple sugars from digesting foods also stays well-regulated. Within their total fiber content, bananas also contain pectins. Pectins are unique and complicated types of fiber. Some of the components in pectins are water-soluble, and others are not. As bananas ripen, their water-soluble pectins increase, and this increase is one of the key reasons why bananas become softer in texture as they ripen. As their water-soluble pectins increase, so does their relative concentration of fructose in comparison to other sugars. This increase in water-soluble pectins and higher proportional fructose content helps normalize the rate of carbohydrate digestion and moderates the impact of banana consumption on our blood sugar. The bottom line here are some surprisingly digestion-friendly consequences for a fruit that might be casually dismissed as being too high in sugar to be digestion-friendly. Similar to the importance of their water-soluble pectins is the digestive importance of fructooligosaccharides (FOS) in bananas. FOS are unique fructose-containing carbohydrates that are typically not broken down by enzymes in our digestive tract. Instead, they move along through the digestive tract until they reach our lower intestine and get metabolized by bacteria. This process helps maintain the balance of “friendly” bacteria (for example, Bifidobacteria) in our lower intestine, and as a consequence, it also supports our overall digestive health. In one study involving female participants, eating two bananas each day for two months led to significant increases in Bifidobacteria. Along with these increased levels of Bifidobacteria, participants also experienced fewer gastrointestinal problems and more regular bowel function when compared to other women in the study who drank a banana-flavored beverage that did not contain any actual banana. History Bananas are thought to have originated in Malaysia around 4,000 years ago. From there, they spread throughout the Philippines and India, where in 327 B.C. Alexander the Great’s army recorded them being grown. Bananas were introduced to Africa by Arabian traders and discovered there in 1482 A.D. by Portuguese explorers who took them to the Americas, the place where the majority of bananas are now produced. Bananas were not brought to the United States for sale in markets until the latter part of the 19th century and were initially only enjoyed by people in the seacoast towns where the banana schooners docked; because of the fruit’s fragility, they were unable to be transported far. Since the development of refrigeration and rapid transport in the 20th century, bananas have become widely available. Today, bananas grow in most tropical and subtropical regions with the main commercial producers including Costa Rica, Mexico, Ecuador and Brazil.

Wolf at the door for Italian skiers
Skiers in Italy got a big surprise when they emerged from their chalets for a day on the pistes – a large wolf was padding around in the snow. Wildlife encounters on most skiing holidays in Europe rarely extend beyond birds foraging for scraps around resorts or the odd glimpse of a chamois on a distant ridge. But skiers in the resort of Pragelato, in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, came face to face with one of Europe’s top predators. The animal was photographed by tourists
sitting on the balcony of a chalet, trotting up some steps and sniffing around in the snow in search of food. The wolf is thought to have been a young adult that may have got separated from its pack as a result of the heavy snow storms that have hit much of northern Italy in the last week. It was first photographed on Saturday and then returned to the same spot on Sunday before wandering off into the woods. The village sits in the Val Chisone, a valley covered in extensive forests of pine and larch, providing ideal hunting habitat for grey wolves. “It seemed frightened, it didn’t know where to go,” an unnamed skier told La Repubblica newspaper. “Lots of people wanted to get close to it to have a better look.” After decades of persecution, wolves are on the increase in Italy, as well as in neighbouring France. Last month a pack of wolves was spotted in the village of Sauze d’Oulz, also in Piedmont. The Costa Cálida (Spanish pronunciation) “Warm Coast” is the approximately 250 km stretch of Mediterranean coastline of the Spanish province of Murcia. This region has a micro-climate which features comparatively hot mean annual temperatures (and hence its name, “Warm Coast”) and a relative degree of aridity (precipitation averaging less than 34 cm annually). The Costa Cálida extends from El Mojón in the north near the province of Alicante, to near the municipality of Águilas in the south bordering on the region of Almería province. The northern end of this coastline includes the Mar Menor (“Little Sea”), a coastal saltwater lagoon
The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth.
Archaeological Museum
The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time.

testing the Volkswagen Golf SV When I was told I would be testing the Volkswagen Golf SV, I imagined it was the standard hatchback model. That is not the case though. The SV is a larger than life hatchback, more like the C-Max is to the Ford Focus. It’s larger and higher up in all the right places although it does look a little more van-like than its smaller hatchback relative. Outside the UK it is actually named Sportsvan and is in fact the direct replacement for the Golf Plus. VW sold over 900,000 of these and in Germany the Plus accounted for 20 per cent of all Golf registrations. A trip to Kent puts it through its paces. To start, it has to contend with all the usual Saunders paraphernalia that includes everything except the kitchen sink. If we did not have a need for a pushchair probably all of the luggage would fit in the large boot. I am always impressed with the high quality of finish on every VW I have driven and this model is no different. The seats are comfortable and supportive, finished in a hardwearing fabric. I like the fact that the rear seats can be pulled forward by 180mm giving a larger boot space if required as you can see in the video at travelwriter.biz. That extends the load area from 500 litres to a 590 litres while folding the 40/20/40 split rear bench increases space to 1,520 litres allowing me to transport a washing machine to the tip and collect a load of logs. At times the SV does feel a little too large for comfort when driving, notably when trying to reverse park. Arguably it would benefit from parking sensors and a
video camera. I try to parallel park on the outskirts of Faversham and my attempt would be a fail on a driving test and the parked driver behind me leaves in disgust. It would also be advantageous if this model was fitted with satellite navigation. Overall the driving experience though is good, it travels at speed on the motorway with ease although there is a little noise but then there are high winds. The 1.6 turbo diesel unit prefers not to travel at slower speeds especially in second or third gear. It really does need a boot to deliver good performance. In common with most diesels it does need a bit of welly to get going but this is all part of the diesel experience and the frugal amongst us will not mind when we see that despite travelling at 70mph it still returns over 50mpg. In these days of six and seven speed manual gearboxes some might expect something a bit grander than the five speed unit but it is typical VW, smooth and reliable. Being higher up than a standard hatchback provides the driver with a better view of the road ahead and allows me to overtake a slow moving vehicle where I would otherwise be unable to in a lower car. “Longer, wider, taller and more spacious than the hatchback it’s based on, the new Volkswagen Golf SV is the perfect antidote for growing families no longer able to squeeze into the firm’s regular hatchback,” writes Parkers, the car experts. “The boot’s almost as big as the Estate model and there’s extra passenger room all round thanks to a wheelbase 48mm longer than the hatch it’s based on. It may not have proved quite so popular here, but plenty were still captivated by the extra space and flexibility offered, and it only gets more practical in the latest incarnation.” Overall, while there is a feeling of quality and robustness about the vehicle one cannot help feeling that it is lacking some useful features that would be really appreciated. 2014 onwards - New price range: £19,075 - £27,015 - Used price range: £14,437 - £24,696 - Top speed: 119mph 0-60mph: 10.9secs, Power: 108bhp, Economy: up to 72mpg - Watch the video at www.testdrives.biz By Tim Saunders

book review The ship, bow first, was slowly sinking into the water. People began tumbling like broken dolls from the decks, flopping, flailing into the sea. There was a huge cracking sound-and then the Titanic disappeared. Kate Alcott, a pseudonym for Patricia O’Brien, used transcripts of the US Senate hearings over the sinking of the Titanic in April 1912. Some of the characters are based on real characters who either survived the sinking such as the Duff Gordons and Margaret Brown as well as Senate William Alden Smith who presided over the hearings, otherwise Alcott admits to this being a work of fiction with the inclusion of factual evidence. I would highly recommend this book. Gripping from start to finish and I mean that! Tess Collins is the kind of heroine I admire and strongly approve of. She comes from modest roots, a large family struggling to make ends meet. Her father is critical and a man of the time, denying equal rights to women. Tess is constantly haunted by his oppressive and deprecating tones: You’re a farm girl, do your job, keep your head down and don’t put on airs. He was under the impression that she would ruin her life through defiance. Thankfully, Tess is a stubborn lady and is determined to make her life better not wreck it. She proves to be a good role model just like her mother: look for opportunity. Keep your head up, not down. Don’t settle for safety. Push forward-you are not foolish to try. What a far cry from her father’s damning thoughts: Watch out, foolish
The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott. girl. Tess feels ashamed of working as a servant, an image of servitude when she is duped into accepting work in Cherbourg. She was a good seamstress and we see evidence of this when she starts working for the indomitable Lady Gordon Duff, a famous dress designer, the person she most admired in the world. Like many others, Tess is on the cusp of a new life filled with immense possibilities, a dream come true, a wonderful fantasy. Sailing on the Titanic with the famous and wealthy. Two infatuated men, one a rich American businessman, Jack Bremerton, the other a talented member of the crew, Jim Bonney who sweep her off her feet. Wonderful and then…the jolt, the slight bump followed by a sudden silence and the sadly ironical remark: We bumped into an iceberg but all is well. Bumping, scrambling, shouting. Suddenly there was an acrid, sweaty smell of human fear in the salt air. Children wailing. Panic everywhere. Desperation. Followed by the horrors that have been well-documented over the years. That this ruined people’s lives is an understatement and I mean for those who were lucky enough to survive. We are told that 706 survived out of a passenger list of 2,223 and that out of these 60% of the first-class passengers survived, most of them women. In steerage, it was 25%. In reality, the Duff Gordons and their secretary escaped in a lifeboat that could have held 40-50 people instead of 12. In The Dressmaker Alcott explores
how the couple were vilified by the press and people in both the USA and the UK. Lady Duff Gordon is subpoenaed to give a statement of what happened in Lifeboat One, contradicting Jim Bonney’s statement. There were crimes against humanity, moral crimes, tales of bribery and refusals to fill the boat and look for survivors. Marrying into the titled class. Gave her licence to be cold about people’s lives. And this is when Tess has to grow up, think for herself and decide on what she really wants out of life. Should she stand up, challenge and do what she wants to do OR should she be careful, be loyal and challenge nothing? Can she remain with her ideal, continue to admire and respect her after learning how self-absorbed, selfish and a bit careless the woman is? People choose whatever they want to believe and declare it true. What is the truth? Will anyone accept any liability for so many loss of lives? Our poor heroine is filled with so much uncertainty. How could she be sure of anything anymore? She has crucial decisions to make over her future with Lady Duff Gordon and her love life. Interestingly, her mother’s advice and her own common sense are pivotal in her decision making. She certainly is true to herself and full of hope not despair. She would be strong and not always too careful, not settle for a smaller life, and face what was true. As she walked through the streets of

Jazz drumming drama Whiplash also took three awards - for editing, sound and supporting actor for JK Simmons, who thanked director Damien Chazelle for “the gift of this character”. World War Two drama The Imitation Game, with Benedict Cumberbatch as codebreaker Alan Turing, won nothing despite its nine nominations. Coming of age drama Boyhood - shot over 12 years with the same cast - was named best film, with Richard Linklater picking up best director prize. Patricia Arquette also won the best supporting actress Bafta for her role in the film. The ceremony at London’s Royal Opera House on Sunday night was hosted by Stephen Fry. Birdman may have only won a single Bafta for cinematography, but this weekend it took the top prize at the Director Guild Awards in the US, which have proved a very reliable indicator of Oscars success. Boyhood star Ellar Coltrane - who was cast in the film when he was aged six - was among the cast and crew who picked up the best film award from actor Tom Cruise. “The truth is, it didn’t feel like a movie, more like an exercise in collaboration and vulnerability,” he said. “To have this movie recognised alongside such grand pieces of art means life itself must be more exciting than we let on.” Best supporting actress winner Patricia Arquette thanked Boyhood director Linklater, saying: “You broke the rules of cinema... and you made an ordinary story extraordinary.” Showbiz satire Birdman, staring Michael Keaton as a washed up superhero actor, took only one award - for Emmanuel Lubezki’s cinematography. Six Nations weekend round up
Wales vs England - 6th Feb Venue - Millenium Stadium (Cardiff) Attendance -73,815 Much was made of the injury toll England had suffered in the build up to this Six Nations opener, but all that matters is performance on the pitch. It didn’t look good for England when they went 10-0 down within 10 minutes courtesy of a Leigh Halfpenny penalty and a Rhys Webb try converted by Halfpenny. England fought back with an Anthony Watson try, converted by George Ford but Wales went into the break with a 16-8 lead after another Halfpenny penalty and a huge Dan Biggar drop goal on the stroke of half time. The second half saw England rejuvenated and forcing Wales onto the back foot. After multiple phases of carefully-orchestrated play, England unleashed the ball from the middle of the park and Jonathan Joseph barged in after shrugging off two weak Wales tacklers, Ford converting to bring England within a single point. There was much endeavour by both team for the rest of the game but the only further points to come were from the boot of England’s fly-half George Ford with two further penalty goals. England overcame an 8-point first half deficit to score 13 unanswered points and also kept a strong Wales team scoreless in the closing 40 minutes of the game. from the boot of Haimona. The earlier rain made handling conditions somewhat difficult and this was reflected in the opening exchanges between the two sides. Ireland started the second half with much more vigour and purpose, taking the game to Italy and forcing them onto the
back foot more. It wasn’t until early in the game’s final quarter that Ireland made the pressure tell with two tries a mere two minutes apart. The first try, on 64 minutes was scored by Ireland’s Conor Murray and it was at this point that the hosts were reduced to 14 men with the sin-binning of Leonardo Ghiraldini for a professional foul at a maul. Ireland scored their second try when Tommy O’Donnell went over after a solo break. Scotland scored the game’s only try on 39 minutes thanks to Dougie Fife. Scotland were only down by a single point at half time, trailing 9-8; France’s points coming from three Camille Lopez penalty goals and Scotland’s points were thanks to Fife’s try and an earlier Stuart Hogg penalty goal. France turned the screw in the second half and their driving mauls were tearing Scotland apart, they really should have benefitted more from this particular pattern of play. It was from a driving maul that Scotland were reduced to 14 men after John Beattie was yeloow-carded after he intentionally dragged down an impressive rolling maul. France tried to press home their man advantage and should have gone ahead in the 70th minute when winger Yoann Huget latched onto a long from hooker Banjamin Kayser but a lastditch tackle from Scotland’s Bennett dislodged the ball from the winger’s grasp. France had the only points of the second half thanks to two more Lopez penalty goals. Furniture First Rojales Tuesday Night Trios Ten Pin Bowling League - Week Sixteen played 3rd February 2015 The draw specialists RightMoveInsurance were at it again and, after losing two close games, managed to secure a 4 – 4 draw with Los Lobos. The Dreamers, currently bottom of the league, had looked to close the gap on those teams above them, when they took on a very unpredictable Lucky Strike. But with Sue Duke and Paul Kundiss of LS bowling three steady games, it was LS who came out 8 – 0 winners. With Splash continuing to accumulate points on a weekly basis, it was a surprise to see them lose 2 – 6 to Los Bandidios. LB had not won in six weeks and, SP were expecting another win. With Barry Tolson and Steve Hibberd rolling 600+ series handicap, LB ‘stopped the rot’ with a 53 pin overall victory. After last weeks lose to Team Finland, Med Bistro and Bar El Raso bounced straight back, with a comprehensive 8 – 0 win over an under par Crazy Pinz. MBBs Mirja Hakonen bowling the ladies high game scratch and handicap with 567 and 627 respectively. With the wind helping on the first two holes players found themselves playing their second shots from much closer to the greens, although this didn’t seem to help them too much, if they were lucky enough to keep the ball on the greens the tricky slopes and fast surfaces made three and four putts commonplace. The golf courses presented itself in good condition and together with the blustery conditions proved to be a mean test of golf. The Gold category members put up a gallant fight against the elements, but only two managed to score thirty points or more. In 4th place on lower handicap with an eye watering 26 points was Swedish member Arne Hansson, Irish member Mike O’Regan managed a point more to take 3rd place with Mick Kennedy returning a very respectable 30 points to put him in 2nd place while Kjell Aasebo from Norway recorded the best score of the day, a very credible 34 points ( including 2 blobs !!) The Silver category members found the conditions more challenging and this was reflected in the scoring. Alan Rickers found himself taking 4th place with 28 points; Patsy Long edged his way into 3rd place on the same score but with a lower h’cap. The 29 points scored by Colin Marsden and Ernie Wilson also needed the lower h’cap rule to be applied with Ernie (Belfast bandit)

MAZARRON FC 6 EDECO FORTUNA 0
After last week’s disappointing defeat at Fuente Alamo, Mazarron returned to winning ways with an emphatic 6-0 home victory over struggling Edeco Fortuna and, in truth, should have won even more easily. From the first whistle, leading scorer Tolo caused panic in the Fortuna defence and it took him only eight minutes to give Mazarron the lead. Toni’s shot was blocked and Tolo was on hand to hammer in the rebound. Two minutes later Tolo broke clear and his audacious chip over the keeper sailed just wide. Mazarron were awarded a free kick after 16 minutes and when Manu stepped over the ball, Toni drove the ball home from 25 yards to make it 2-0. Mazarron continued to dominate the rest of the first half with Tolo being foiled on two further occasions, a header from Dani sailing over the bar and, one of the highlights of the season, a “rabona” shot by Tolo which was brilliantly saved by the Fortuna keeper just two minutes before half time. The second half followed in much the same way with total dominance by Mazarron. Young Andreo was orchestrating things in midfield and Tolo ran the Fortuna defence ragged. After 52 minutes a clever back heel by Tolo found Toni whose powerful shot was turned for a corner. Toni took
the flag kick and although the cross evaded the onrushing Enrique, Tolo was on hand at the edge of the six yard box to smash the ball home for Mazarron’s third goal. It was 4-0 after 64 minutes when Tolo’s cross was headed into the net by Dani and three minutes later it was Tolo again with clever control before teeing up substitute Stevens who volleyed home from the edge of the penalty area for Mazarron’s fifth. Tolo had another shot tipped onto the post by the Fortuna keeper and then a superb through ball from Andreo found Tolo once again racing clear only to see his fierce drive deflected for a corner. The league’s leading goalscorer was not to be denied his third hat trick of the season which he completed in style shortly before the final whistle. It was not until injury time that Fortuna had their only two shots on target, both saved by Mazarron’s juvenile goalkeeper Pablo who had come on as a substitute for the untroubled Conejo. Team: Conejo (Pablo); Mateo; Enrique; Dani: Lorca; Manu (Stevens); Andreo; Liders (Juanillo); Stalyn; Toni; Tolo Man of the Match: Andreo

5uper Huercal-Overa CF A fantastic all round display at El Hornillo last Sunday saw the HuercalOvera side put FIVE past a La Union side tipped for the play offs. The story of the day was new signing Juanma bagging a hat trick on his home debut, his general play and touch were just what Los Rojos required in the final push for a play off birth. The 600 spectators also saw Tomas Campanas bag a brace to take his tally to 11 for the season. A solid display from the defence was rewarded with a clean sheet for Paco in the Huercalenses goal after pulling of a cracking save at 1-0 that could have turned the game. The only bad point was Centre Midfield general Mansour had to be replaced by Pinchon after picking up a knock but we hear that he should be ok for the trip to Jumilla next Sunday which promises to be a huge game for both clubs in the seasrch for promotion. JUANMA
Another big crowd at José Barnés witnessed a good game played out between two teams that are hoping to be gracing the Tercera next season. Both clubs had played each other in the past at the dizzy heights of the Spanish second division and this game seemed to be a celebration of better times, as both clubs are striving to climb their way back up the Spanish football pyramid. The fans didn’t have to wait too long before the first goal scored by Soriano for the visitors after six minutes. The Lorca forward latched onto a great through ball from midfield and powered down on the Ciudad goal before steering his shot past Miguel ,the Ciudad goalkeeper, to send the 150 visiting fans into delirium. From that moment it was evident that this was going to be an open contest as the two teams realised that three points from this game would put a stamp on their promotion ambitions. The game was end to end with both teams creating chances and in the twentieth minute Basi grabbed an equaliser for Ciudad. The fans of both clubs were making a fantastic atmosphere for this level of football and the players were responding on the pitch by creating a game fitting of the occasion. The visitors took the lead again in the thirty ninth minute through Asensio and that goal looked
as though it would take Lorca into a half-time lead. However, that wasn’t to be the case as Ciudad pressed the ball broke for Robles, in injury time, and he duly put the ball into the net to send the home crowd into the break happy. The second half replicated the first half with both teams creating chances, Ciudad actually scored midway through the second period but the goal was chalked off for offside. Nevertheless a winning goal wasn’t to be for either side meaning the game ended 2-2. A shock home defeat for Churra means that Lorca and Ciudad are now in the automatic promotion positions. Fitting really as both clubs will do themselves and the Tercera credit if they manage to go up. Sunday 8th February Result: HT 2-2 FT 2-2 Stadium: José Barnés Attendance: 1500 - by Tony Higgins
