Denmark attacks: Two men charged in Copenhagen
Danish police have accused two men of aiding the gunman who killed two people in the weekend attacks in Copenhagen. The suspected gunman, named by Danish media as Omar El-Hussein, 22, was shot dead by police after he attacked a free speech debate and a synagogue. Denmark’s PM said he was not a member of a terror cell, according to what was known so far. The shootings left a film director and a Jewish man dead and five police injured. The two men being held are charged with providing and disposing of the weapon used in the shootings, as well as with helping the gunman to hide. Michael Juul Eriksen, a defence lawyer for one of the men, said they denied the charges. The suspects, who have not been named, appeared in a closed custody hearing on Monday. The national flag flew at half-mast on official buildings across the capital. ‘Criminal links’ The attacker was a Danish-born man aged 22, Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt told a news conference. “He was known by the police for several criminal acts, including severe violence, and he was also known to be linked to a criminal gang in Copenhagen. “But I want to also make very clear that we have no indication at this stage that he
was part of a cell.” Omar El-Hussein was released from prison two weeks before the attacks after reportedly serving a two-year sentence for grievous bodily harm. Radicalised in jail? Michael Gjorup, head of the country’s prison and probation service, told Danish media that authorities were concerned about changes in El-Hussein’s behaviour in prison and passed on information to Danish intelligence before the attack. The head of Danish intelligence, Jens Madsen, acknowledged that El-Hussein had been “on the radar” of his services. Who were the victims? Finn Noergaard, 55, was struck in the chest by a bullet at the free speech debate. The documentary film-maker had a keen interest in the problems faced by the offspring of migrant communities. His friend Malene Trock told Berlinske daily he was “open-minded” and “cosmopolitan”. Producer Torben Larsen is quoted by the AP news agency as saying Mr Noergaard was “a very generous and warm person”. Dan Uzan, 37, was shot dead while standing guard at a Copenhagen synagogue. He had studied at the city’s university and was a keen basketball player, active in a local team. Denmark’s chief rabbi, Jair Melchior, said Mr Uzan was an “amazing guy - irreplaceable”
Cyber bank robbers steal $1bn, says Kaspersky report
Up to 100 banks and financial institutions worldwide have been attacked in an “unprecedented cyber robbery”, claims a new report. Computer security firm Kaspersky Lab estimates $1bn (£648m) has been stolen in the attacks, which it says started in 2013 and are still ongoing. A cybercriminal gang with members from Russia, Ukraine and China is responsible, it said. Kaspersky said it worked with Interpol and Europol on the investigation. It said the attacks had taken place in 30 countries including financial firms in Russia, US, Germany, China, Ukraine and Canada. “These attacks again underline the fact that criminals will exploit any vulnerability in any system,” said Sanjay Virmani, director of Interpol’s digital crime centre. Kaspersky said the gang’s methods marked a new stage in cyber robbery where “malicious users steal money directly from banks and avoid targeting end users”. The gang, which Kaspersky dubbed Carbanak, used computer viruses to infect company networks with malware
including video surveillance, enabling it to see and record everything that happened on staff’s screens. In some cases it was then able to transfer money from the banks’ accounts to their own, or even able to tell cash machines to dispense cash at a pre-determined time of day. Kaspersky said on average each bank robbery took between two and four months, with up to $10m stolen each time. “It was a very slick and professional cyber robbery,” said Kaspersky Lab’s principal security researcher, Sergey Golovanov. The Financial Services Information Sharing and Analysis Center, a body that alerts banks about hacking activity, said that its members had received a briefing about Kaspersky’s report in January. “We cannot comment on individual actions our members have taken, but on balance we believe our members are taking appropriate actions to prevent and detect these kinds of attacks and minimise any effects on their customers,’’ it said in a statement.
Spain ex-king appeals paternity suit Spain’s former king Juan Carlos has lodged an appeal against a paternity suit brought by a woman claiming to be his daughter, a judicial source said on Saturday. His lawyers launched the court appeal to fend off the first lawsuit faced by the 77-year-old, since he lost his total immunity on abdicating last June. Spain's Supreme Court last month agreed to examine the claim by Ingrid Sartiau, a Belgian housewife reportedly in her late 40s. "Juan Carlos has lodged an appeal against the admission of the paternity suit," a judicial source told AFP on Saturday. Sartiau herself has also launched an appeal since the court has not yet ordered Juan Carlos to undergo a DNA test as she demanded in her suit, the source added. Lawyers on both sides and state prosecutors must now examine the appeals before they are sent to the court for a ruling, which could happen
within weeks, the source said. Sartiau claims Juan Carlos fathered her in the mid-1960s before he became king. He married Queen Sofia in 1962. Juan Carlos took the throne in 1975 after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco and reigned for 39 years. He handed the crown last year to his and Sofia's son Felipe VI, 47, hoping to freshen the monarchy's image. The royal palace said on Saturday it would not comment on the case since it was a private matter. Juan Carlos's last years on the throne saw the monarchy plunged into scandal, including a fraud investigation implicating his youngest daughter Cristina, 49. A judge has ordered Cristina to stand trial in that case. Juan Carlos also sparked outrage in 2012 for going on an elephant-hunting trip to Botswana at the height of Spain's economic crisis.

Coca Cola boycott for Spanish parliament?
http://www.kahvilusikka.fi/
A Spanish politician has requested that the nation’s parliament stop all sales of Coca Cola until the company reinstates workers in a bottling plant in the capital. Cayo Lara, head of the United Left party, has sent a letter to the president of Spain’s Congress of Deputies requesting that all sales of Coca Cola be stopped until the multinational complies with a Spanish court ruling, that the company should reinstate workers at the Fuenlabrada bottling plant in Madrid. The parliament should not maintain "commercial relationships with companies or brands that do not comply with court rulings and violate the fundamental rights of workers and their representatives," Lara says in the letter, quoted in Spanish daily, 20 Minutos. Over a year ago, Coca Cola announced the closure of the Madrid bottling plant, which would affect almost 2,000 workers, who were made redundant, reshuffled or accepted retirement. Redundancies at the Madrid bottling plant saw protests in the capital, while unions took Coca Cola to court, with the eventual ruling that the multinational had to give everyone their jobs back. Spanish courts ruled that the redundancies were illegal, as in Spain, other than for disciplinary reasons, companies are only allowed to fire staff if the company is facing financial difficulty or the job roles disappear. While it is currently unclear as to whether the parliament will ban the sale of Coca Cola, it is a clear sign that the furore over the bottling plant closure is far from quietening down. Notorious Eta killer found in Venezuela
SOL News the group in a statement released on Monday morning. “We again urge the government to initiate and fast track the necessary measures to see that the Interpol arrest warrant is acted upon.” Eta declared a “permament” ceasefire in 2010 bringing an end to a four decade long terror campaign for an independent Basque homeland incorporating parts of northern Spain and southwestern France that claimed more than 820 lives. One of the most notorious Basque terrorists has been tracked down to his tropical hideout in Venezuela after more than six years on the run. Iñaki de Juana Chaos, 59, was photographed by Spain´s El Mundo newspaper running an offlicense in the Caribbean resort of Chichireviche. He is understood to be living there with his wife, Irati Aranzabal Zuloaga and their young child. The man convicted for the death of 25 people in a series of attacks in the 1980s was controversially released from prison in 2008, a move that provoked widespread outrage across Spain. The €60m sports arena that will never open
The modern sports facility in Pamplona is almost finished, but with no opening date in sight, could it be the latest in a long line of Spain’s white elephant building projects?
ort
After spending €58 million on a state of the art, multi-use facility, the local government in Navarre does not know what to do with it. From the outside, the Reyno de Navarra Arena is impressive and imposing; a giant white cube covered in 933 smaller illuminating cubes. But the nearby streets are silent and wire fences surround the unused public building. The project is the latest victim of the crisis, just one in a long line of white elephants that have plagued Spain since 2008. The building was approved back in 2008 as a response to the economic crisis, part of a €4.5 billion plan by the community of Pamplona. The scheme was modelled on Plan E, the series of ill-advised measures put in place by the Socialist government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero to use public money to attempt to boost Spain’s economic activity. But the sports and cultural centre has yet to open,

As it lies empty, it is hemorrhaging cash: security and maintenance alone cost around €250,000 a year, while expected demand has plummeted. “The demands and habits of the general public have changed due to the crisis,” Ángel Vázquez, consultant on the project, told Spanish daily, El País. According to Socialist party politician, Roberto Jiménez, “If we could go back to 2008, nobody would have taken this decision (to go ahead with the build), we thought that the crisis would be over quickly.” The local government has now dismissed purely public running of the centre and is exploring publicprivate partnerships. For sports events the arena could hold up to 10,000 spectators, while the capacity for concerts increases to 12,000.

Spain's white elephants
American student gored by bull
Castellón airport Spain’s infamous 'ghost airport' was still lying empty four years after its inauguration and was plagued by controversy, from its €150 million overspend to the court case and subsequent conviction of the man behind the airport, Carlos Fabra. It was announced at the end of 2014 that the airport had finally been given the go ahead to start operating its first flights.
An American man is recovering in hospital in Salamanca after being horrifically gored during the annual Carnaval del Toro in Ciudad Rodrigo.
Ciudad Real airport Another airport white elephant, Ciudad Real’s empty airport became an enduring symbol of Spain’s economic crisis. Saddled with debts of nearly €529 million, the airport closed in 2012 after just three years of operating.
Enrique Crespo, the surgeon who operated on Miller, described the injuries, which included a wound measuring 40 centimeters, as “the biggest goring wound I´ve ever seen,” according to a report on television channel Cuatro.A spectator captured the moment the bull caught Miller and tossed him in the air on the horns. Onlookers screamed in the crowd while others rushed to distract the bull and attempt to pull Miller to safety. Two other men, reported to be a Scot and a Spaniard were also injured during the encierro although their wounds were described by authorities as minor.
Benjamin Miller, 20 was gored multiple times receiving injures to his thigh, sphincter and back when he was tossed by a fighting bull during Saturday´s running of the bulls. After three hours of surgery the American from Georgia was said to be “recovering well” in intensive care at a hospital in western Salamanca.

RENTALS
OUTSIDE SPACE We have dealt with furniture and the finishing touches to your rental property in the last couple of weeks to get as many referrals and returning custom as you can. Now it is time to look at your outside space. See this space as another room to your property. The more time your clients use the outside space and patio furniture the better, this means your indoor furniture will have less wear and tear. So buy patio furniture to suit your property, if you have 2 bedrooms make sure you have enough furniture for four people and if you have room include sunbeds as well. Another tip is if you have a sofa bed you will require another 2 chairs and a table big enough to accommodate them. As we often hear this complaint from our customers when renting before buying that there is not enough seating outside for the amount of people catered for indoors. Quite often properties have two terraces or more, so make an eating space with table and chairs, maybe a bar BQ and a relaxing space using sofas, chairs and a table. Choose a heavy base for your parasol and it may be an idea to make a note somewhere saying to your clients “If you are not using the parasol or going out PLEASE TAKE THE PARASOL DOWN” because of the strong winds which can pop up any time. This will save your parasol landing up next door or down the road in a broken mess. Another tip I do suggest that you do not place your parasol in the table centre even if there is a place for it, because if a strong wind does blow up your table could go over too. This means all that wine and beer is wasted and broken glass everywhere. One of my customers said to me “I don’t want any patio furniture as I will not be sitting in the sun” As I pointed out to her, you are renting your property and your clients will expect and want to sit out in the
sun or enjoy a drink on the terrace in the evenings. Nothing would change her mind. It’s a point to take into consideration. It’s not all about what you want but making things comfortable for your clients. Now the first impressions really do count, especially after a long journey. If your property looks clean and fresh and well kept, your clients will have a feel good factor before opening the front door. So you are half way there in having “Happy Paying Bunnies”. So make sure your property is freshly painted and maintained. Those rejas (window bars)
always look better for a coat of paint rather than a rusty appearance and don’t forget the gates. A few plants are good, I know this is difficult when you are not living at the property but you could try cactus type plants which are low maintenance. I hope you have found some handy tips in the last 3 weeks to help you make a better return on your investment. He is the founder and chief executive of social enterprise TerraCycle, a company whose aim is eliminating waste. "It's a lofty ideal I know," he says, but so far so good. In 13 years, US-based TerraCycle has gone from the classic start-up run out of a basement to operating in 21 countries. Last year it had revenue worth $20m (£13m) and 115 employees. The company's business model is to find waste and turn it into something useful, for a profit. It collects things that are generally considered difficult to recycle - such as cigarette stubs, coffee capsules, or biscuit wrappers - and finds a way to reuse them. That is done mainly through processing them down into a material and selling them to a manufacturer, and to a lesser extent by turning them into products such as bags, benches or dustbins. It relies on contracts with businesses - such as McVities, Johnson & Johnson, and Kenco - that pay TerraCycle to take away their waste, as well as individual consumers collecting and sending it in, in return for donations to a charity of their choice. Hungarian experience With messy hair, jeans and sweatshirt, Tom, 33, is typical of the new breed of young entrepreneur that shuns formality. Yet he goes one stage further - he's worn the same pair of jeans every day for the past year (except for the weekend when they're washed) as part of his attempt to consume less. Born in communist Hungary, Tom fled the country with his parents at the age of four, ending up in Canada, via Holland, aged 10. He says his whole business model is borne out of his experience of the two different economic systems
“In Hungary back then, you needed a licence for a TV set,” he explains. You couldn’t just go and buy one. Instead, after applying for a licence maybe a year later you’d get a black and white TV, and you’d get the one state channel. Tom says: “Only a few years later we end up in Canada where every Friday my dad and I would drive round and see mountains of TVs thrown out of every apartment buildings. “We’d pick a few up just for fun - because we thought ‘who would throw out a TV?’ and they all worked and they were colour!” This, he adds, got him to thinking about the concept of waste. At the same time, he was impressed and inspired by the entrepreneurs he met in Canada (parents of friends of his), and decided he wanted to run a business. “We were trying to come up with a product and then find the best type of garbage to make it. “Five years into the business we totally pivoted everything,” he says. “Instead of starting the question with the product, we said let’s start with the garbage… we need to solve crisp bags, cigarette butts and so on.” Without that realisation, he reckons TerraCycle could never have been profitable. And he’s a firm believer in profit. “Many young entrepreneurs think you can either do good for the world and earn nothing, or you can do something negative and earns loads of money. “I don’t choose either - I want to make a lot of money by doing good. “People are also motivated by personal return. If I sell this company I’ll make millions, and that’s a human motivator. “I really fundamentally want to live my life in this way, but the fact that I can walk away with tens of millions - that’s a positive, I’m not going to say I feel bad about it. “ Source: BBC.com

Egypt bombs IS in Libya after beheadings video
Egypt says it has bombed Islamic State targets in Libya, hours after the group published video showing the apparent beheadings of 21 Egyptian Christians. State TV said the dawn strikes had targeted camps, training sites and weapons storage areas. A second wave of strikes was reported hours later. Libyan officials said Egypt hit targets in the militant-held city of Derna. A video emerged on Sunday showing militants forcing a group of men to the ground and decapitating them. IS militants claim to have carried out several attacks in Libya, which is in effect without a government. The kidnapped Egyptian workers, all Coptic Christians, were seized in separate incidents in December and January from the coastal town of Sirte in eastern Libya, under the control of Islamist groups. The video of the beheadings was posted online by Libyan jihadists who pledge loyalty to IS. It was one of the first such videos to come from an IS group outside its core territory in Syria and Iraq. The video describes the Copts as “crusaders” and refers among other things to two women, wives of Coptic priests, whose alleged conversion to Islam triggered a sectarian dispute in Egypt in 2010. Egypt did not give the locations of the strikes, but a spokesman for Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni told the BBC that Egyptian jets had taken part in co-ordinated air strikes on Derna. “Eight strikes have been conducted so far [in Derna]. The plan is to target all IS locations in the country wherever they are,” said Mohamed Azazza. Libyan Air force commander Saqer al-Joroushi told Reuters news agency that Libyan planes had bombed targets in Sirte and Bin Jawad. Several hours later, the AP news agency quoted unnamed security officials as saying that Egyptian warplanes had again struck Derna. Thirteen of the dead men came from the village of Al-Our, in Minya.
of a job. Many say they still have relatives working there, and that villagers will continue to go there in search of work. Egypt declared seven days of national mourning after the release of the video. In a televised address, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi described IS as “inhuman criminal killers”. “Egypt and the whole world are in a fierce battle with extremist groups carrying extremist ideology and sharing the same goals,” he said. He later visited St Mark’s Cathedral in Cairo to offer his condolences to Coptic Pope Tawadros II. Egypt is already fighting Islamist insurgents based in the Sinai peninsula who have declared their allegiance to Islamic State. Sirte abductions Leading international condemnation, the United States called the killings “despicable” and “cowardly”. Pope Francis expressed his “profound sadness”. Libya is home to a large community of both Muslim and Coptic Egyptians, with most working in the construction sector.
Screams of grief come from several houses in the dusty back streets, and In the first kidnapping in Sirte, in late December, a group of Coptic Christians groups of black-clad women go from house to house to offer condolences. One was abducted at a fake checkpoint while trying to leave the city. woman, wailing in the street, tells us she has lost five relatives. Days later, militants raided a residential compound in Sirte and separated In the packed courtyard of the church, mourners are gathering for a memorial Christians from Muslims before handcuffing their captives and taking them service. Local men say they are desperate for work and Libya is their only hope away. Libya has been in chaos since 2011 and the overthrow of its then-leader, Col Muammar Gaddafi. Since then, numerous militia groups have battled for control. It has two rival governments, one based in Tripoli and the other in Tobruk. Source: BBC.com

La Manga Caravanning Raise €2580 for MABS
The Caravan & Camping Club Ralliers and friends of the Rally at Caravanning La Manga donated 2,580 Euros to MABS after three successful events. Rojales rescue centre on hand again
Severely malnourished horse dumped at Rojales rescue centre For the first time in it’s sevenyear history, a neglected horse has been dumped at the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales. The severely malnourished mare was left tied to the centre’s rubbish skip with a piece of string, and was discovered early on Saturday morning (February 7). “She’s so thin she was on the point of collapse and we really don’t think she would have survived much longer in the cold weather conditions we are having at the moment,” said centre cofounder Sue Weeding. We have named her Mystery. “Word has obviously got out that we don’t have a horse trailer at the moment so they are walking them here.” Even though we sometimes struggle to fund ourselves we are please that they now bring them to us and no longer leave them to die on a piece of waste ground. We get calls from all over Spain for help which is why just before Christmas rescued horses seized by the police from Granada were sent to us as no one else would take them. All of this strengthens our determination to grow as an organisation to help more horses, ponies and donkeys. The rescue centre is fundraising for a new horse trailer after the axle snapped on their 15-yearold trailer last month. One horse rescued after the breakdown had to be walked the 45 minutes home to the centre because there is currently no alternative form of transport. Sue said the centre is raising funds to buy a new trailer which is low to the ground and therefore does not need a ramp as some
of the horses we rescue are very weak and traumatised and going up a noisy ramp can be difficult for them and dangerous for us,” she says. When we have the new trailer we will be able to collect Franky the donkey from Barcelona as his is ready to come home after his very successful surgery to straighten his front hoof The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre welcomes any donations and sponsorships to help their cause. Every cent donated or spent in their eight charity shops across the Alicante province goes towards the feeding and care of the 89 horses, ponies and donkeys that live at the centre and to help with future rescues. Donations of furniture, clothes and bric-a-brac to stock the shops are welcome. Please contact the charity shop hotline on 652 021 980 for more information about furniture pick-ups and volunteering. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre opens to the public for free on the first Sunday of every month between 1pm and 4pm. The first horse tour begins at 2pm. EHCRC is located just outside Rojales at Partido Lo Garriga 59. For directions and details on how to sponsor a horse, please visit www.easyhorsecare.net.

'Focus on fitness not fatness ' By Dr Gavin Sandercock A children's fitness expert from the University of Essex
In this week's Scrubbing Up, Dr Gavin Sandercock argues there has been a well-meaning but misguided focus on obesity, while the harm caused by inactivity has been overlooked. We are used to seeing reports warning of an "obesity time-bomb". But the extent of the problem is often exaggerated. Figures for 2010-11, from the National Child Measurement Programme, suggest 9% of five- to sixyear-olds are obese. That equates to 2.7 children in each class of 30. In 1990, it was 1.5. Does a 20-year increase of just over one child per class seem like an epidemic?

Call Dr Machi Mannu:
Other data suggests childhood obesity levels are starting to plateau or even fall slightly. Overweight and obesity levels among two- to five-year-olds stayed relatively stable at 25% for boys and 23% for girls between 2003 and 2013. But public health's continual focus on food and obesity leaves the more harmful effects of inactivity overlooked and ignores the role of physical fitness in health promotion and monitoring. Despite its absence from the title, "obesity" was mentioned 193 times in the 150-minute parliamentary select committee on The Role of Diet and Physical Activity in Health. Dietary advice changes almost continually: eat less fat, ban junk food, tax fizzy-pop The Local Government Association has proposed a tax on "unhealthy" foods to enable local authorities to help overweight and obese children. But are we missing the point? Fitness not fatness swimming Healthy eating is important, but it is not the answer to obesity. Most interventions, such as breakfast clubs or free school dinners, may actually increase the calories consumed. Arguably, inactivity is a better predictor of ill health than obesity. Figures from the Physical Activity Statistics 2015 British Heart Foundation (BHF) published this January show less than a fifth of children say they move enough - a figure that's still falling. Shockingly, the BHF's own direct assessment of activity, using accelerometers, showed that none of the 11- to 15-year-old girls and only 7% of boys they measured actually did enough exercise. All children and young people should engage in moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity for at
least 60 minutes a day. But I think a better approach would be to measure fitness. Changes in activity levels often fail to have a big impact on body mass index (BMI). But it is very rare that anyone who becomes more active, for example by walking to school or work, or training for a fun-run, does not become and feel much physically fitter. I routinely test the fitness of elite sports people, the public, cardiac patients and entire schools. Our research in schools shows decline in children's fitness. What is needed is a wide-ranging set of changes to help children be habitually more active, more often. If we measured fitness, as the chief medical officer recommended in 2009, we would see the problems that physical inactivity is causing and realise just how successfully some of the fantastic initiatives supported by Sport England, the BHF and UK Active really are. BMI is a symptom of inactivity, but it should not be used as the last word in measuring success of interventions to increase physical activity. Anybody of any size can benefit from being more active whether they see a change in their weight or not.

n e d r a G Home & Snowed out of the garden? There are still things you can do.
If the snow has left you barely able to open your back door or the howling wind has forced you inside don’t get frustrated. This time of year gifts gardeners with time to spend on planning.
So what new features can you add to your garden to make it look impressive for the rest of 2015? A cool conservatory Conservatories are the middle class dream. Not only do they extend your living area but they capture sunlight and heat to extend the usually dismal UK Summer. However they require plenty of preparation before you can enjoy them. The average conservatory will set you back several thousand pounds, and could take a few months to construct – so forward planning is a must if you want to be using it this summer. Think carefully about how much space you need for the new construction. How will it affect the layout of your garden and the light and air your internal rooms get. Think about the possible impact your neighbours. While local councils generally don’t require planning permission for conservatories, it’s always best to check before you commit. Before you plant any bulbs determine when they should flower because this will tell you when to set them. Spring flowering and hardy summer flowering bulbs (daffodils, lilies, tulips & hyacinths) are planted in Autumn, tender Summer flowerers (gladioli) are planted in early Spring and Autumn-flowering bulbs (nerines) in late Summer. So at this time of year you should be thinking about Summer flowers bulbs that you can plant this Spring. Find bulbs that will teem with colour and life when the sun begins to coax them into full bloom. Identify spots of your garden that lack this colour or need contrast. SOLTIMES FEBRUARY 2015
Hello and welcome to CanDu Computer Bytes. Over the years, I’ve examined a variety of programs that will monitor for updates, download and automatically install the updates of your favourite software. This article will look at the pro’s and con’s of these programs, offer my conclusions and then describe my solution. One of the first things to say is that, for me, the inclusion of auto-checking and / or updating routines within the programs themselves, makes the task of keeping your favourite software current. These include CCleaner (AKA Crap Cleaner – before the “Political Correctness” morons applied pressure!), LibreOffice and many other really useful programs. What are the pro’s and con’s of these programs? The Positives are that they will download and install your programs to their default locations, without malware, crapware or any third party software. They usually do these thing without you needing to watch every action and know that everything will be right! The Negatives are few but important! There is a limit to what you can add to the list! One program can only find 10 of your 200 application but another might be able to get to 150! Over the years, I have never found a single Updater program that can find and update ALL programs! There are a few that do come recommended though. The first of these is called “NINITE” (maybe the name came from when the programmer started the program, said “nigh night” and went to bed!). This does exactly what it says on the tin. You have to go to the ninite website, select all the programs that you want on your computer and download a stub program. The first time you run it, it will download and install all the programs you have asked for. All other times, it will check the version you have and only download and install any updates! The biggest problem is that “Ninite” doesn’t have a large choice of
programs! The second is from FileHippo.com which found most my out-ofdate programs, although it did get the wrong version of “Audacity”. It also showed the ‘Beta’ test versions of programs (unless you really know what your doing, I suggest avoiding these). The last selection for today is from MajorGeeks. com and it too found most of the out-ofdate programs and also got 1 wrong! Just a different 1 :-) Both of these programs opened a web page to allow the updating process to begin. As a member of the Albox Computer Club (ACC) it falls on me to ensure that the club’s recommended software is kept up-to date. With a list of 22 recommended freeware programs (and constantly growing), that range from simple cleaners to complete office suites, the method of laboriously finding, downloading and copying them to the memory sticks. Which leads me to describe my method. The final method that I use is a little more complicated, but not that much! I open my browser to include all the web pages that have the programs needed. Then I run a script created by “AutoIT” which goes to each page, downloads the latest version (using the browsers down-loader) to a set folder and then moves on to the next one. Simple, without programming skill, or the need to sit there and watch it! The installation must be done normally, by you, but a script could be written to do that as well! So until next time, keep the wind and rain off your head, stay well and only use EWN to start your fires with! Contact me for free advice concerning your computer or tablet at the address or phone number below.

A history of Moorish Spain (V) Mohammed I ruled from 852 until 886; his nemesis Umar ibn Hafsun was born around 850 in the Malaga region. He was supposedly of Visigothic origin though in reality he was a descendant of black Africans and grew up near Iznate where his family owned land. Umar was a violent young man; murdering someone in 879 before getting involved with the local criminals. The Governor (Wali) of Malaga on capturing him merely fined him and let him go as he didn’t know about the murder charge. Umar fled to Morocco and the Governor lost his job. It wasn’t long before Umar, now an outlaw was back in Andalucía where he joined the rebels who were fighting against Mohammed 1. His violent disposition and leadership skills meant he soon climbed to the top of the greasy pole. The Muwallads were Christians that had converted to Islam and although allowed in Andalucía they were treated unfairly. Umar rallied the disaffected and they rebuilt the Bobastro castle as their base. Mozarabs were Christians and Jews who hadn’t converted to Islam; they paid a tax under Sharia law called jizyah to be allowed to live in peace. They too rebelled against Mohammad
X-ray machine opens new frontier
Researchers in Palo Alto in the US state of California have developed the most powerful X-ray laser in the world. The Linac Coherent Light Source is being used to see how atoms and molecules move in living systems. The machine is a billion times more intense than the previous generation of lasers. Each X-ray pulse has as much power as the national grid of a large country, and a hundred are produced every second.Prof Mike Dunne, who runs the Palo Alto facility, showed me around. He said the LCLS fired extremely fast bursts of X-rays. "Think about a person running the hundred metres," he told me. "The difference between first place and second place is sometimes 1/100th of a second. “Take that 1/100th of a second and divide it a million times. Then take one of those divisions and divide it another million times. And that's how fast this burst of X-rays is." The laser was developed at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Its systems were adapted from a particle collider. But instead of smashing atoms, it enables researchers to see what is going on in living systems and to track chemical reactions as they happen. “This genuinely is a revolution,” said Prof Dunne. “We can now see for the first time deep inside an atom on the space scale and the time scale that chemistry and biology really happens. It transforms our ability to view the real world.” Prof Dunne took me into one of the experimental areas, where the beam hits a sample and lights it up. Researcher Dr Meng Liang was preparing a dish of the material found in the brains of people who have Parkinson’s disease. She believes that the new laser has the potential to transform investigation in her field of study. “To actually image these things in real time with the brightness and the fastness that LCLS has will be really special, so we can film them and see them instead of just looking at evidence for these kind of things,” she said. In another chamber, Prof Anders Nilsson has for the first time seen how atoms behave in a chemical reaction. He said that the work would help chemists speed up and increase the efficiency of chemical production. “I think this is a chemist’s dream. We can actually start to understand the processes and from that understanding develop new catalysts,” he said. The LCLS has been so successful that the Japanese government has built a similar system. Europe is constructing its own version in Hamburg, Germany. Source:www.bbc.com

Speed your Spanish house sale with garden improvements
By Clodagh and Dick Handscombe Practical holistic gardeners authors and broadcasters living in Spain for 25 years. Gardens help in hard economic times The housing market in Spain certainly continues to be deeply in the doldrums. Houses in many areas, new and re-sales, being reduced by up to fifty percent or more to get even a sniff, and when a sale is negotiated and closed it is can be the garden that finally tips the sale . But perhaps that is not surprising when one considers that one of the main reasons people buy in Spain is the weather that allows one to live a very much outdoor lifestyle. A good garden can therefore result in an exquisitely designed decorated and furnished house only being used for a few hours a day from Spring to Autumn and for entire days only on the colder wetter days of winter – provided the garden is designed for outside living and does not require substantial maintenance activity every week of the year. So what can you do to prepare and modify your garden to give yourself a better chance of a fast sale at an attractive price to both the seller and buyer. We highlight some tidying tasks, likely attractions and improvement needs. Basic tidying needs As with the interior of the house potential buyers will be attracted by a tidy uncluttered garden that suggests that maintenance will be very manageable with or without the help of a gardener. So as a minimum ensure that the following are done and maintained so that you can present the best image to unexpected visits by potential buyers. 1. If you have a lawn ensure it is regularly cut even in the winter months if sunny weather stimulates growth and treat it to a combined weed killer fertilizer mix. 2.Ensure that the swimming pool and jacuzzi are kept pristine even if you normally give it little winter attention. 3.Keep all paths and terraces swept and edging plants trimmed neatly back. If the surfaces look a little dirty and mossy clean them with a pressure hose. 4. Re-point damaged surfaces and the facing of garden walls, and repaint garden walls. 5. Prune back straggly plants and deadhead plants that continue to flower. 6. After Christmas do the major winter cutback as normal explaining to visiting potential buyers that you are doing it to improve the shape sizes and Spring/Summer flowering potential of plants. What to do is explained in Chapter 6.9 of ‘Your Garden in Spain’. 7. Tidy the garden shed , clean tools and remove smelly out of date and or leaking chemical products. 8.Check that the watering system is working effectively. Turn of unnecessary tubes and drip jets and stop leaks.. 9.Clean up potted plants and their pots/containers. 10. Prepare a tidy hidden area for the compost heap, leaves rotting down in bags, logs etc.

Real Estate Sector Will Employ 10% of the Active Population by 2020
Over the next five years the volume of people employed in the Spanish real estate sector will increase, in relation to the working population, to account for around 10% of the total, according to a recent survey carried out by the consulting firm KPMG. This rate is three points higher than the percentage of 7% currently employed in the industry, but is still far from the 14% of the active population which were employed in the sector in 2008, before the end of the boom in the sector and the bursting of the housing ‘bubble’. The KPMG report entitled “2015: year zero for the start of the recovery of the real estate sector in Spain” was prepared with the collaboration of more than 200 executives in the real estate sector in Spain, and surveys were carried out with over 150 real estate company executives, companies with involvement in real estate, financial institutions, investors, the Sareb and the Public Sector. According to the surveys, 55% of those questioned estimated that the real estate business will employ between 7% and 10% of the active population in the next five years, while a further 35% considered that this figure could reach between 10% and 15%. At the same time, 68% of the respondents felt that employment in the real estate sector needs to reach the level of 10% of the active population in order for the recovery to be obvious. With regard to the expected recovery of the real estate sector, El Mundo reported that two-thirds of the executives surveyed do not envisage this taking place within a year, and in fact more than half (56%) estimated that it will be at least another two years before the current offer is absorbed. On the other hand, as far as the demand is concerned, one-third of those questioned (35% of the total) estimate that it has already recovered or that it will do within the next twelve months, and another 45% estimate that this recovery will take place over the next one or two years. The experts consulted by KPMG predict that in five years’ time, the real estate sector will once again increase its weight in Spain’s GDP, with 58% of the respondents estimating that it will reach a percentage of between 10% and 15% during this period, compared with the 10% that it currently represents, while 23% consider that it may even rise to between 15% and 20% of the national wealth. In any case, the contribution of the real estate business to the Spanish economy will not even come close to the level of 22% of the GDP it accounted for in 2007, the exercise prior to the crisis. However, encouragingly, 70% of the experts involved in the study agreed to consider that the sector has recovered if it assumes 15% of the country’s GDP during the course of the next five years, and almost all of those surveyed by KPMG, 94%, emphasised that Spain is currently a destination of interest for real estate investment.

Just 10 firms accounted for 11% of all global payouts in 2014, and the top 20 accounted for 18% of all dividends. They were led by Vodafone whose huge special dividend early last year meant it was responsible for 20% of all UK dividend payments. Other giant payers in the past year have been oil firms such as Shell, banks such as China Construction Bank and HSBC, and technology companies such as Apple and Microsoft. By contrast, mining firms cut their dividends for the the third year in a row. "This was a result of commodity companies suffering from lower prices of their products in the face of slowing global demand," said the Henderson report. With the recent big fall in the oil price, Mr Crooke added: "We don't expect developed market oil companies to reduce their dividends in 2015, but there is a strong likelihood that emerging market producers will pay out markedly less this year as their profitability comes under pressure." The research was compiled by adding up the dividends paid by the 1,200 biggest firms whose shares are traded on stock exchanges around the world. The rest of the dividend income from smaller firms was estimated. Source: bbc.com

Falling Jam
Armas and the Pit
The first tunnel of the Alquerian Metro was progressing at an acceptable pace. Acceptable for Alqueria that is. It isn’t a question of how much progress is being made but why a village of eight hundred souls requires an underground system in the first place. The requirement is tied to European grants designed to overhaul transport infrastructures. After some very creative accounting and downright lies regarding the logistical needs of Alqueria, grants were duly awarded. Unfortunately in these days of financial crises the issuing agency insisted on site visits, they wanted to know exactly where their cash was going. The elders of the Village had hoped that the sheer unpleasantness of Alqueria would dissuade any potential inspector from putting in an appearance. The ploy had worked in the past. This time however, Alqueria’s bluff had been called. This is why Felipe Armas was bravely digging his way to a cardiac arrest while being watched by Loco Paco. Paco looked anything but loco to the exhausted Armas. The plan submitted with the grant application called for two lines with an intersection and nine stations. The total length of the network was to be 22km. Armas’s excavation was to such a depth that an individual of average height could, when standing upright see over the edge of the hole. At the present rate of progress it would take 546 years to complete the digging. One might reasonably expect Alqueria’s transport requirements to have changed somewhat during this time. It was however satisfactory progress for Alqueria. With the inspectors on their way Armas was digging with a will. He was given the job by default as no one else answered the job application. Armas only answered it as he thought he was applying for a subscription
to ‘Naughty Nun Monthly’ which he read purely for the articles. It soon became obvious that the inspectors weren’t going to be fooled. Instead of a network of tunnels they were going to find nothing more than a hole in the ground that any self respecting boyscout on latrine duty could have dug. Many inventive schemes to foil the inspectors were mooted. These ranged from backdrops painted with tunnel scenes to rendering the inspectors unconscious by applying Remitroot Whisky in vast quantities. The solution came in the form of Antonio Poyato’s newly acquired and as yet uninstalled septic tank. By simply glueing on cardboard fins and stencilling the words ‘1000KG RDX’ it was possible to create the illusion of a very large bomb. Lowering it into the semi-darkness of Armas’s pit completed the deception. The inspectors arrived promptly and peered into the void. The sight of Armas about to strike the ‘bomb’ with a hefty shovel tested their mettle. With remarkable agility for men of their age they clambered into their vehicles and sped away with doors slamming. The whole scene looked like a bungled kidnap attempt. They were in such haste they reached Murcia before they realised they were out of petrol.
Following My Instincts by Paul Martin
Business related to art, music and entertainment will be highly profitable. This is a great time to sign a contract or attract new customers. You have to spend money to make money. Giving away merchandise to people who make a certain amount of purchases will pay off. You have a knack for creating a buzz about products and services. Think carefully about who will appreciate such things. A carefully targeted campaign will require a financial risk, but don’t worry. Your instincts are sound. Well thank heavens for that, my instincts are sound. At least, so says my horoscope today. I’m also going to do well with some business related to art, music and entertainment; in fact, they will be highly profitable. As well as that, if I can find one, it’s a great time to sign a new contract or attract new customers. Mmmm . . . That’s a little worrying. I suddenly don’t feel quite as confident about my future as I was ten seconds ago. Attract new customers? And hang on, as if that wasn’t a bit of a knock to my ego, next on my stellar prediction is the revelation that I have to spend money to make money. Fine. Easy for my horoscope writer to say that; he or she has probably got plenty of money, after all, don’t their horoscopes appear in hundreds of newspapers and websites around the world? But I don’t have a huge amount of money to spend in order to make more money, so that little prediction goes out of the window. Even so, my instincts are sound and that’s
My appetite for jam is not great. I like it well enough, but only infrequently. I have short episodes of jam fancying, but they are very transient, and usually only last until halfway down the jar, upon which I go right off it, and end up throwing the remaining half jar away. However, my current jam penchant has lasted a sufficient length of time for me to actually finish a pot of Mercadona’s finest strawberry, and contemplate buying another one. Mercadona was at the height of its usual mid-morning melee, but jam I wanted, and jam I would have. I circumnavigated the shelf stackers with their mobile mounds of replacement goods, swerved round shopping trolleys, eeled my way past pull-along baskets, reached the object of my desire, and placed it safely in the care of my trolley assistant, Pete. We were lucky. Despite the number of people in the shop, Mari’s check-out was free. Not wishing to hinder her in her quest for the title of Fastest Check-out Girl in Andalucía, I began emptying the trolley contents on to the belt in a vain attempt to match the speed with which she was putting each item through the ray gun and into the safe harbour at the end of the line. The jam, however, was not to be hurried. It was content in the bottom of the trolley, and obviously wished to remain there, conversing with the other sundry items that were deemed necessary for Biggs survival for the coming week. As I lifted it to trolley rim height, it caught, slid its smooth glass body through my fingers, executed a
something to hang on to. Now, what’s next? Ah, giving away merchandise to people who make a certain amount of purchases will pay off. Here we go again. I’d love to give away stuff to people, if I had the money to buy it in the first place – watch my lips, horoscope writer, I’m not in the money. I don’t have the where-with-all to make this happen – I wish I did. But I don’t. So I have the knack for creating a buzz – oh yes? – about products and services. Easily said, hey? And I have to think carefully about who will appreciate such things: well lucky them. I just wonder if they’re thinking of me in the same way? Doubtful. And also, is my horoscope writer thinking of me in the same way, because what he, or she is telling me is pretty personal isn’t it? But they can’t have the time to consider the millions of readers who are, like me, angst ridden over their daily predictions. And finally, a carefully targeted campaign will require a financial risk, but don’t worry. Don’t worry? Firstly, I don’t know what a carefully

This was followed by the equally distinctive sound of me expressing my feelings in a spontaneous and uninhibited manner. Mari barely paused. ‘No pasa nada’ she said, as the rest of my shopping sped down the belt. I rushed to get a replacement jam, and returned to find that a healthy queue had built up from nowhere while Mari salvaged the sticky mess with the aid of a dustbin and a length of paper towel. This left me with 2 thoughts: I will forever remember the sound of falling jam. And if I ever come back to this earth as a checkout girl, and some idiot drops jam, I will call for a minion to come and clean it up!
targeted campaign is, and secondly – excuse me for repeating myself – I don’t have the money. Why does this horoscope person assume all of us Pisceans are financially well endowed? I for one am not. So I’m brought back to the final revelation, that my instincts are sound, which I have to say – modestly – I think they are. I may not be in a financial position to launch the next record breaking product, which takes the world by storm. I may not be able to create a buzz, or carefully target campaigns. But I think, on this occasion, I’m going to go with my instincts – which I know are sound – and never read a horoscope again.

In a medium stock pot combine stock, cream style corn and chicken. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and add pepper and salt. Bring back to the boil. In a separate bowl mix the cornflour with water. While the soup is boiling add this mixture and stir constantly until well mixed. Season with sesame oil by adding a few drops at a time. s l l o R g n i r p S a Banan Ingredients
In a large bowl, mix the pork, salt, soy sauce, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, spring onions, beansprouts, egg, pak choi and rice wine. Place 1 teaspoon of the pork mixture in the centre of each wonton wrapper. Fold the edges to the centre forming a triangle. Gently press together the edges with moistened fingers. Fold in half again lengthwise, then fold back and bring together the corners. Press two corners together. In a heavy frying pan or wok, heat oil over high heat. Deep fry each wonton 2 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Ingredients
Serves: 2 200g lean beef steak 2 tsp cornflour 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder 1 carrot, peeled 1 small leek, trimmed 6 spring onions, diagonally sliced 1/2 red pepper, seeded and cut into strips 100g rice noodles 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp dry sherry or rice wine 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 large garlic clove, finely chopped 2cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and finely chopped 1 fresh red chilli, seeded and finely chopped soy sauce to serve
Serves: 4 banana spring rolls oil for frying 2 bananas 2 tablespoons salted butter 4 teaspoons sugar cinnamon, to taste 4 spring roll wrappers icing sugar to serve
Method
Heat oil in a deep pan or deep fat-fryer until it's 190 degrees C or medium high heat. Slice each bananas in half length-wise to keep the half-moon shape. Then slice each piece in half to get 4 pieces in total. Melt butter in microwave for about 20-30 seconds and stir until completely melted. Add bananas, sugar and cinnamon to melted butter. Place quartered bananas on spring roll wrapper and fold the long edges of the spring roll paper over the banana, then roll up and tuck in the ends. Lightly oil the end to seal. Place the roll seam-side down on a plate while the oil heats up. Place spring rolls into heated oil and fry, turning occasionally, until golden brown. Remove from oil and drain on kitchen paper. Finally, dust with icing sugar and more cinnamon, if you like.
Method
Chinese crispy beef stir fry
Cut the meat, across the grain, into 5cm wide pieces, and then cut each piece into wafer-thin strips. Place in a small bowl with the cornflour and five-spice powder. Mix together well to coat the meat. Cut the carrot and leek into 5cm lengths, then cut each piece into fine matchsticks. Put all the prepared vegetables together in a bowl. Soak the noodles in a bowl of lightly salted, boiling water for 3 minutes. Drain and refresh in cold water, then drain again. Combine the soy sauce, sherry and 2 tbsp water in a small jug or bowl. Place a wok or a large frying pan over a high heat. When hot, add 1 tbsp of the oil, then when it is just smoking, toss in the meat and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until cooked through. Remove with a draining spoon. Add the remaining oil with the garlic, ginger and chilli. Stir-fry for 30 seconds, then add the vegetables and toss these around for another 30 seconds. Stir in the soy sauce mixture and as soon as the liquid is bubbling, mix in the drained noodles and finally the meat. Serve immediately, with extra soy sauce to sprinkle. COOK SMART: *For a stir-fry, it is important to have all the ingredients ready prepared before you start cooking. It then takes just minutes to toss everything together over a high heat. *Prime beef steak is relatively expensive but you only use a small quantity in this stir-fry. Rib-eye steak is terrific value compared to fillet and even rump.
www.soltimes.com The Chinese New Year is the most important of the holidays for the Chinese. It is defined to be the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar. Unlike the Christian New Year, which is based on a solar calendar, the Chinese New Year is based on a traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar whose date indicates both the moon phase and the time of the solar year. A lunar month is around 2 days shorter than a solar month. In order to “catch up” with the solar calendar, an extra month is inserted every few years. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year. Normally, the celebration will start from the New Year’s Eve and will last for around 15 days until the middle of the first month. Before the celebration, people will normally completely clean the house and display traditional New Year decorations. This festivity is the time for family reunion, which is the most important part of the Chinese New Year celebration. People will normally visit relatives and friends, do some shopping, watch traditional Chinese shows, launch fireworks, and plan for the coming year. The celebration will sometimes be highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of heaven, earth, the family ancestors and other gods. In modern China, working professionals will normally have 7 days of holiday including the weekend to celebrate. After the family reunion, some modern Chinese families may take the chance to visit tourist destinations.
Chinese New Year History
It is unclear when the exact beginning of the New Year celebration in China is. Normally, it was said to start from the year end religious ceremony during the Shang Dynasty (1766 BC - 1122 BC). A few believe that it started from as early as Emperor Yao and Shun (~2300 BC). At the beginning, the date of celebration varied from mid-winter to early spring. With the maturity of the solar base calendar, Emperor Wu (157 BC - 87 BC) of the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220), established the first day of the first month as the beginning of the year, where it remains. The following is a brief list: Emperor Yao and Emperor Shun (~ 2300 BC): Small scale New Year celebration type of activities. Shang Dynasty (1766 BC - 1122 BC): New Year celebration started from religious ceremony. Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220): New Year celebration is official at the first day of the first month and crack bamboo appeared. (Crack bamboo will create loud cracking sound when put on fire. It is believed that the sound drives away evil.) Wei Dynasty (220 - 265) and Jin Dynasty (265 - 420): Fireworks used in New Year celebration. The tradition of Shou Sui formed. Song Dynasty (960 - 1279): Fireworks using gun powder began. According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the “Year”. The “Year” looks like an ox with a lion head and inhabits in the sea. At the night of New Year’s Eve, the “Year” will come out to harm people, animals, and properties. Later, people found that the “Year” fears the color red, fire, and loud sounds. Therefore, for self-protection, people formed the habit of posting red Dui Lian in front of their house as well as launching fireworks, and hanging lanterns at year end.

Chinese New Year Traditions
Different parts of China have very different traditions. The following are the most typical: New Year’s Eve Dinner The New Year’s Eve dinner is the most important dinner for the Chinese. Normally, this is the family reunion dinner, especially for those with family members away from home. During the dinner, normally fish will be served. Dumplings are the most important dish in Northern China. These two dishes signify prosperity. Other dishes are dependent on personal preference. The majority of Chinese will have New Year’s Eve dinner at home instead of a restaurant. Fireworks Fireworks are used to drive away the evil in China. Right after 12:00PM on New Year’s Eve, fireworks will be launched to celebrate the coming of the New Year as well as to drive away the evil. It is believed that the person who launched the first firework of the New Year will obtain good luck. Shou Sui Shou Sui means “after the New Year’s Eve dinner” as family members will normally stay awake during the night. Some people just stay up until the midnight after the fireworks. According to tales and legends, there was a mythical beast named the “Year”. At the night of New Year’s Eve, the “Year” will come out to harm people, animals, and proprieties. Later, people found that the “Year” is afraid of the color red, fire, and loud sounds. Therefore, at the New Year’s Eve night, people will launch fireworks, light fires, and stay awake the whole night to fend off the “Year”. Red Packets The Red packet is a red envelope with money in it, which ranges from one to a few thousand Chinese Yuan. Usually the red racket is given by adults, especially married couples, and elderly to young children in the New Year days. It was believed that the money in the red packet will suppress the evil from the children, keep them healthy, and give them a long life. New Year Markets In the course of the New Year’s days, a temporary market will be setup to mainly selling New Year goods, such as clothing, fireworks, decorations, food, and small arts. The market is usually decorated with a large amount of lanterns. Small Year Small year is the 23th or 24th of the last month of the year. It is said that this is the day the food god will leave the family in order to go to heaven and report the activity of family to the Emperor of the heaven. People will follow religious ceremony to say farewell to the food god, including taking down and burning the paint of the food god. After the New Year’s Day, people will buy new paint of the food god and display it in the kitchen. Cleaning A few days before the Chinese New Year, people will do a complete cleaning of the house and house wares which signifies to remove the old and welcome the new. Historically, when bathing did not occur often, people would normally take one to welcome the New Year. Decoration After the cleaning, people w i l l decorate the house to welcome the New Year. Most of the decorations are red in color. The most popular New Year decorations are upside down fu, dui lian, lanterns, year paint, pape r cu t ti ng, door gods, etc.

Nottingham woman makes art from labels
An artist has been getting recognition after turning thousands of unwanted clothing labels into works of art. Joy Pitts, from Nottingham, collects labels from charity shops and clothes that are to be turned into rags. Fashion icon Paul Smith is a fan of her work and last year one of her pieces was selected for the Royal Academy's summer exhibition. Ms Pitts described being selected from 12,000 submissions as a "real eureka moment". “I started experimenting with materials when I was at college,” she said. “The first piece I did was a shopping bag covered in labels and it won an award, then I did something similar and that won another award, as did my third piece.” But a turning point for her career was when Nottingham fashion designer Paul Smith commissioned her.She said: “I sent him some photographs of my work asking for some labels because he’s also from Nottingham. “He said ‘no but I want to commission you for my private collection’.” The works of art develop after she has taken pictures of her subjects. The portraits of the bull and the woman originate from a farm in Leicestershire, with the latter being shown at the Royal Academy. Her latest project is a portrait of the Queen to celebrate her reign. It is made of World War One name tapes and took 110 hours of work just to put it together. She said she is currently trying to find an exhibition place to officially unveil the portrait. Source: www.bbc.com

The Mar Menor is a huge (135 square kilometres) salt-water lagoon, separated from the Mediterranean by the 24 kilometre long La Manga del Mar Menor (The Strip). The average depth of the Mar Menor is four metres and at its maximum it is seven metres which means that the seabed slopes very gradually and you have to get several hundred metres in before the water is of any depth.
A parkinsons Support Group
The Mar Menor’s salinity provides buoyancy so it is, supposedly, one of the safest places to swim in the world. The mineral-rich waters are said to have therapeutic effects and because of this the area has a significant spa tourism industry. The sludge in the salt pans is also credited with beneficial effects on the health, so there are often dozens of mud people wallowing in it at any one time.

weekends it will be packed with Spanish families, who move most of their house onto the beach. The sea is very shallow, with netted off areas to exclude watersports, fishing and jellyfish. The jellyfish are mainly harmless and much reduced in numbers from previous years, apart from the summer of 2006 when they were back with a vengeance. A video of a sheep that has turned nature on its head by thinking its a dog is proving a viral hit online.
More than 310,000 people have watched the clip of 10-month-old Pet bounding around with three border collies. Owner Mairi McKenzie, who farms in the Scottish Highlands, says Pet's unusual nature is a result of being brought up with the sheep dogs. The lamb was brought inside the farmhouse last year by owner Mairi McKenzie after it was feared she would not survive due to her small size. The farm dogs took her under their wing, and now she replicates their bouncy mannerisms. Pet and her canine adoptive parents are so fond of each other they even sleep in the same baskets. Ms McKenzie, 51, said: "She's a right character. I've never seen anything like this before - it's really unusual. "She bonded with the dogs and they accepted her as one of them. She's still a wee bit wobbly but loves to hop, skip and jump around." Read more: http://web.orange.co.uk/
8 Tips For Caring
For Your
Pet This
Winter
Unless you’re one of the lucky ones living in one of the balmier states, you've felt the cold chill of winter arrive. For some of us, cold weather is regarded as a mere nuisance; for others, it’s a fun time filled with snowboarding, skiing and other winter joys; and still others will find this time of bone-chilling weather and huge piles of snow a veritable nightmare to endure. Whatever your viewpoint on winter, one thing remains the same for all of us with pets: it’s a time when our beloved babies need a little extra care. Luckily, PetMD has compiled a list of tips to protect your pet from the dangers of winter. 1. In or Out? Does your pet spend most of the time in the backyard? You might want to keep her indoors during the freezing
months, especially if you live in bitterly cold areas. No one wants an icicle for a pet -- they’re simply not that cuddly. 2. Bare Naked Truth If you must keep your pet outdoors, consider this: Would a fur coat alone (even if it is faux mink) keep you warm against the elements? No? Well, your pet’s fur coat isn’t enough protection for your pet during winter, either. Be a pal and provide your dog with a warm, dry, and draft free shelter outside; the shelter should also comply with any state laws that apply. 3. No More Frozen Dinners! Because it takes more energy to stay warm when it's cold, outdoor animals eat more during the winter. Likewise, fresh, running water is vital for maintaining your pet's health. Keep an eye on the water bowls and make sure they haven’t turned into little skating rinks for fleas (boo, fleas!). While ice pops might be a fun treat, your pet really doesn’t want to have to lick a frozen lump of ice to get his water.
APAH
Space for a little one? Born in October 2012, Martha and her 8 brothers and sisters were found as puppies in a cardboard box. 5 of them are still being cared for by APAH and waiting for their first loving home. To meet the family, please call 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.
Lovely little Emily was rescued with her brother George when they were p u p p i e s . George was lucky to find a home, but APAH are still looking after Emily and hoping for a home for her. To meet her and the other APAH dogs, please call 630 422 563 or 616 210 850.

4. Latest Fad Diet? Indoor animals, meanwhile, have different dietary needs. They conserve energy by sleeping more in the winter. Dogs and cats also exercise much less when they do go outside, so you may need to adjust the amount of food accordingly. After all, no one wants an overweight pet. 5. Frosty the Biting Snowman We’re not talking about the latest horror movie offering from Hollywood. Frosting is a serious problem during winter, especially for paws, tips of tails, and ears. This makes it even more important in keeping your pet warm, especially if they’re an outdoor pet. Get special booties, coats, and maybe a hat for your pet during her walk s, and
look for early warning signs of frostbite such as firm, waxy skin and blisters. 6. The Deadly Drink The worst of all the wintertime chemical spills is antifreeze, which often leaks from a car's radiator. It may taste delicious to your cats or dogs, but it is extremely deadly -- even the smallest sip can be fatal. If your pet starts acting "drunk" or begins to convulse, take him to the vet immediately. Better yet, keep all pets away from the garage and clean up any accidental spillage. You should also not let your dog wander too far during his walks. Who knows what dangers lie in your neighbors' driveways? 7. Salty Solution Do you live in an area with cold and icy winters? Then you are probably accustomed to salt on the sidewalks and roads. However, the types of salt (typically calcium or sodium chloride) used to melt ice and snow and keep it from refreezing are somewhat harsh on delicate paws -- not to mention they corrode concrete and damage the beautiful vegetation. Protect your pet's paws, and keep him warm during walks, by outfitting him with booties. 8. Joy Ride Cars are particularly attractive to animals in the winter-time, especially frigid cats that love to climb up under the hood and curl up on the warm motor. This, as you can imagine, has led to many mishaps when motorists start their car … ouch! Avoid such accidents by tapping your car's hood before starting the vehicle. Sure, you may wake Kitty from her deep slumber, but she'll thank you in the long run. Wintering with your pet is common sense. If you’re cold, your pet will most likely be cold too. So snuggle up, keep your pet warm and safe, and sooner than you can say "Jack Russell," we’ll all be hitting the beaches for some summertime fun.

The One That Got Away by Simon Wood
“She wanted to see fear and terror in his eyes, the same fear and terror that she and all his other victims had suffered at his hands. She wanted him to know the misery he’d put her through.” If you enjoy reading thrillers this will not disappoint you. The suspense will keep you riveted throughout. With a dramatic opening and a thrilling finale which takes a lot of beating it’s an enjoyable read from a well-established author. This is one for the boys. Two young girls have been abducted after having replicated a Thelma and Louise Las Vegas, doing the works: gambling, drinking to excess and partying temporarily abandoning their respectability and studies. Zoe was a PhD student just needing to let her hair down and have fun. Girls behaving badly. So how come Zoe Sutton was still fighting for her life after the two girls were abducted and drugged even 15 months later? Was she such a bad girl that she needed to be punished by a psycho who believed in his demented mind that he was performing a cleanup act? She was guilty of a lack of respect for her fellow citizens. Is this a crime comparable to murderers and rapists? “My crime is disrespect? Do I really deserve to die for displaying bad manners?” It might sound a bit corny and far-fetched but when you are trussed up by a monster vying for your blood do you have a leg to stand on? Apparently not. An honourable killer?
An interesting paradox but it doesn’t make sense in a logical world, does it? What a warped view of society. What a dangerous man. Both girls were treated like disposable trash and there were others. Holli was left hanging from a hook in the ceiling just like a slice of beef. Zoe was next. It had been a random abduction. Zoe had the advantage, she wasn’t hanging and she was free to move and escape. Her car was visible and if she ran for it she might be able to find the cops and rescue Holli. A chance in a million considering that Zoe was still drugged. Attempting to rescue her friend would have been seen as a suicide mission. The monster was over 6 feet tall, strong and armed with a knife which he used to brand his victims with a Roman numeral and a whip like a dead snake which “possessed the power to devastate the human body.” Ten lashes wrecked most people. One of his victims was flogged more than forty times. Yes, Zoe was the one who got away and the story moves on 15 months. Every day she relives the nightmare knowing that the monster is still out there. Her life is ruined, she has ostracised her friends and family, needs weekly shrink sessions and still cannot deal with anger issues or guilt at abandoning her friend. A development provokes Zoe into responding irrationally and putting herself in danger and in the spotlight. “Murder victim found suspended”
So how were the pancakes? Well Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) was yesterday, if you’re reading this on Wednesday 18th – and today’s Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent; for many, a time of fasting and reflection as we remember the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, being tested by the devil. In times past, and for some today, this fasting, other than on Sundays, is strictly observed, so Shrove Tuesday was an occasion to feast in preparation for the shortage of food to follow. And for the less well-off, what better than pancakes? For many of course, the fasting is symbolic, living without sweets, cigarettes or some other treat, but whatever form it takes, the important requirement for Christians at this time of year is reflection and repentance, with perhaps a large dose of love and forgiveness of others thrown in. So for myself, I will be trying, frequently unsuccessfully no doubt, to live without self-interest. To endeavour to see another’s point of view. To accept someone ‘treading on my toes’ or hurting me, without immediately leaping to my own defence. And believe me, this will be incredibly difficult. But this, rather than merely living a good life, is what is really meant by ‘following Christ’ and living like him,
for St Peter wrote: “Christ suffered on our behalf, leaving us an example, that we should follow: For he never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. He didn’t retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered.
pause for thought
He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly. He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that they could be completely removed, leaving us able to live for what is right. So it is by his injuries we have been healed”. Now that really is a hard act to follow. There’s no need to defend myself for God is the ultimate judge. There’s no need to greave over all my faults, for they’ve been repaid in full by Christ on the Cross. Will Zoe survive the final reckoning or will she pay the ultimate price-her life? The suspense picks up in the right places and Zoe proves to be a powerful match for the Tally Man but will this be enough? A thrilling journey, a bit scary at times though but well worth a read. “Predators like these aren’t created perfect. They develop their methods from their errors. Swimming Competition in Torrevieja this Saturday
Torrevieja swimmers were in action this weekend in the “4th Time Control” of the season, an opportunity for regional swimmers to earn autonomico and national qualifying times. The Municipal pool in Torrevieja hosted the days events for 14 of the regions clubs. For Torrevieja swimmers it was a day of unusual races as many of the teams girls faced racing against each other in the same heats which doesn’t happen very often. In the 400m Freestyle event, Paula Garcia, Zoe Connolly and Piroska Rideg stood side by side, nerves racing and ready for the 400m challenge. One the day Zoe came in first followed by Piroska, Paula and team mate Vicky in a previous series. Other good swims for the day were Vicky Pignuer in the 100m and 200m Backstroke, Zoe in the 100m Breaststroke and 200m Medley and Piroska in her 1500m, 800m Freestyle. Continuing on this positive theme Alexandra had a good swim in her
50m Breastroke and Skye Burns in her 100m Backstroke and 100m Freestyle races. Paula and Louise also swam well and all the girls had two good relay events, the 4 x 50m Medley and the 4 x 50m Freestyle. The team were placed 3rd and 4th in these races. With a slightly depleted male side of the team, Elian Del Rio Castillo and Yuriy Lymar both had good swims. Yuriy in the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle races and Elian in the 200m Medley 100m Butterfly and 100m Freestyle events. Elian, Zoe, Paula and Vicky all gained new Autonomico qualifying times for the Winter Regional Championships in Castellon on the 7 & 8th March. TMGS Match Report 2015 for La Finca.
TMGS Medal Trophy.
The rain threatened and the wind blew strong for the 35 members and guests but it was pleasing to see that the rain stayed away on the day and the most enjoyed the day’s golf although the scores revealed it was a little tough out there and for sure, the course was not playing to par. The Two’s Pot was a very healthy 28€ and only one member achieved a 2 and this was Hermis Woerdemann at the 13th. All Four of the NTP’s were claimed and the recipients of a sleeve of Srixson Soft Feels were G. Thurnstrom, John Eyre, Alex Goslan and Andy Mills who missed an easy 2 to share the pot, just like his rugby team (Wales), he succumbed to the pressure. The Best Guest award went to Nick Terry for his 32 points. The Silver Division were playing Stableford and their Gold counterparts were playing Medal as today was the 3rd of 5 Medal competitions for the
COSTA COBRAS RFC
Play
The Silver crew struggled with the exception of one player and it only needed a 26 point score from R Matikainen to take 4th place, George Chapman and Sandra Twentyman tied on 27 points and as we use the ‘lower handicap’ system of the Spanish Federation, this meant Sandra was pushed into 3rd place by George to take the runner-up slot. Ian Parkinson’s 32 was easily enough to take top slot of that Division. The Gold Division saw Roger Neilson (who belongs to the Silver Division but elected at the outset to contest for the trophy and play the Medal matches) come home with a nett 80 to take 4th spot. A 3 set of 78’s meant that once again, the lower handicap scoring was used and this meant that Chris Gray took 3rd place; S. Sonenson took the runners-up slot and Steve Higgins the top spot in the Gold Division. Photo: Gold category winners. Our next game, Wednesday 18th February 2015 see’s us at Alenda golf course, so if you fancy a game just look at our website www.tmgs. org or call the Match Secretary on 966719604.

AD PLIEG 2 MAZARRON FC 0
Mazarron lost ground in the race for a play-off position with a disappointing 2-0 away defeat at Pliego. Mazarron could have scored twice in the opening minutes of the game. First, Tolo’s cross was headed out to Chema whose fierce drive from 25 yards was turned away for a corner by the Pliego keeper. From the resultant flag kick, Liders’ header cannoned against the crossbar before rebounding to safety. However, it was Pliego who took the lead after 12 minutes when a left wing corner was flicked home with the Mazarron defence and goalkeeper Conejo caught napping. Mazarron’s tactics too often left Tolo isolated up front with three men around him at all times. He was fouled after 30 minutes and Toni’s free kick from 20 yards sailed just inches wide of the far post. Five minutes later Tolo seemed to have been fouled in the penalty area after close interplay between himself and Toni but the referee waved play on. Mazarron were missing the previously ever present central defender Dani who was surprising dropped to the substitutes bench. Their back four was exposed again on 39 minutes but fortunately the Pliego striker shot over
the bar when well placed. The second half started with Pliego on the attack and when Mazarron gave away a needless foul on the edge of the penalty area, the free kick was deflected passed Conejo to increase Pliego’s lead after 51 minutes. Tolo headed Manu’s left wing cross just wide after 55 minutes but Mazarron’s best effort in the second half came after 64 minutes when Andreo’s tremendous shot from 30 yards smashed against the post. Pliego had a chance to increase their lead after 75 minutes after more sloppy defending by Mazarron but again the final shot went over the bar. Andreo went close again for Mazarron and Liders’ through ball found Tolo in the clear with five minutes remaining but his shot was deflected for a corner as time finally ran out for the visitors. Team: Conejo; Chema (Juanillo); Mateo; Antonio; Lorca; Manu; Liders (Martin); Andreo; Alvaro (Dani); Toni; Tolo Man of the Match: Tolo Mazarron’s nevt game is at home to CD Juvenia on Sunday 22nd February, kick off 17.00

JUMILLA FC 1 HUÉRCAL-OVERA CF 0
An intensly contested match between the sides occupying 2nd and 3rd in the table ended with Jumilla getting the upper hand. The visitors hand the better chances of the first period with Campanas and Juanma having space to get shots in but off target. The home side didn’t look like they got into their stride as the Huercal-Overa defence looked strong getting first to every ball. The big chance in first half fell to Campanas and Lloris in the 28th minute, a great ball in from Carlos Perez found Campanas who took a touch, turned and fired against the keeper when the rebound fell to Lloris who could only direct the ball over the bar. In the second period it was very difficult to separate the sides, both looking to get forward for the points but neither could find the breakthrough.
Then with 80 minutes on the clock the ball went out for a Jumilla throw 20 yards from the visitor’s goal line, the throw should have been given as
a foul due to the player having both feet over the line but this was let go, then a whipped in cross found the head of the Jumilla number 9 who directed the ball past Paco but a foul had been committed and the goal was ruled out… Moments later Jumilla went back to front with a long ball out if defence down the right, the ball looked to be going out but a touch of indecision to play the ball out or leave it to go was pounced upon by Jumilla right winger Navarro who cut the ball back to Carlos Martinez who slotted past Paco to the delight of the home supporters. The result leaves Jumilla a point behind leaders Real Murcia B (52) and Huercal-Overa now level on points (45) with Aguilas just 4 ahead of Mar Menor in 5th,, Huercal-Overa travel to Mar Menor in the next game which should be another tight affair. Elsewhere the leaders tasted defeat for the first time this season with a home defeat to Yeclano who seem to be coming into form in the second half of the season. F.C. PETANCA IN THE COLD By Susan Ward
Brrr... its cold first thing in the morning for us petanca players, but, for those who took heed of Susan's recent top tip - cold balls was not an issue. (10minutes in very hot water before leaving home, keeps them warm for hours!) No complaints will be considered, yes put on coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and even take the odd hot water bottle and blanket to a match but look upwards at those gorgeous blue skies, no hail, no snow and when did we last have a decent rainfall? Well the Sunshine Radio International Petanca League is well over half way through the Winter season and thoughts have already turned to the Summer season. But lets have a round up of state of play up till now. There have been no big surprises in the league positions with Rocajuna Mixtas leading division 1A followed by XPS. The same with division1B Guardamar leading with Lions a close second. I will not name the teams who are doing a splendid job of supporting both divisions, just suffice to say we are all having a brilliant time. The Cup, Plate and Bowl competitions are well under way with the semi finals due to be played shortly. The way the league and cup, plate and bowl competitions have been set up means that most of the league teams have a very good chance of winning a medal of some sort. So, who are going to be the winners and the losers as all finals will take place on 1st April??? A grand party is being planned afterwards for presentation of all rewards.

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES
Why just dream? When dreams can come true.
How many times have you looked out to sea and admired the beautiful view, with the blue sky blending seamlessly into the blue sea. A sailing yacht gracefully pushing its way through the white topped rolling waves. How often have you imagined how great it would be to venture out for a sail especially on a hot day when the sea looks so cool clear and inviting? Only to be brought down to earth by the thought of writing out the cheque, because everyone knows sailing is a financial black hole of astronomic proportions. Of course you could always pawn the wife’s shoe and jewellery collection; “no best not to venture into dangerous territory.” Far better to just spend the children’s inheritance, or could there just be a better way? Well as they say, I know a man who does; or rather I know a group that does; a group of ex pats who certainly do know how to cut costs down to size. I speak of the SAMM Catamaran Group which is just one of six groups currently affiliated to the sailing association Mar Menor. The Cat Group are the proud owners of Hamoor, a Stryder 23ft cruising catamaran. They have a proven history which goes back to 2008 when they first formed this boat share group. Their intention was to enjoy the near perfect sailing waters of the Mar Menor, and maybe to venture a little further afield. It all started when the then Commodore of Samm, John Curtis generously decided to let this new group have this catamaran on permanent loan to help them get under way. Hamoor was an ideal day boat just needing a bit of TLC, John was busy rebuilding a larger craft for exploring the Mediterranean and decided he had one too many yachts,” can you have one too many yachts”? The boat was in good condition, just needed a few fittings replacing and a coat of paint. So a few work days were organised and an enthusiastic group of members soon knocked her into shape and then put to sea for a shakedown sail. With the boat getting the all clear the group then divided up into various levels of sailing experience. There were those who were qualified skippers with ICC or Day Skipper and some without any qualifications but never the less could sail, and those who just wanted to be passengers or wanted to learn new skills. The qualified skippers formed the back bone of the group and aided along by those who could sail they would worked together as skipper and first mate. They would
then arrange sailing days and act as crew taking out any group members wanting to sail. The boat comfortably carries 8 people, with a large flat stable deck and being a catamaran it is not prone to heeling. Sailing days take many forms some days are dedicated to improving sailing skills. Learning basic boat handling techniques, picking up and casting off a mooring, coming alongside a jetty, even man over board drill was practised, though this had to be dropped because he got fed up of getting wet!! “Just joking, we used the wife”. Those wanting to take the helm were encouraged to do so, and if they wished to master all the aspects of sailing. Many sailing days are spent locally simply cruising the tranquil waters of the Mar Menor stopping maybe to have lunch while moored off a beach. Or enjoying a picnic or swimming off the back of the boat which is a great experience. Especially enjoyable if you have only swum off the beach before, to float around in crystal clear water with near perfect visibility way down to the sea bed. With just a few friends for company, no thronging crowds, it really is a great feeling. For those looking to match their skills against others then there is always the Samm Spring and Autumn handicap race series. If you have not raced before it really will sharpen your sailing skill and give you that adrenalin rush. There are also days when the boat ventures a little further away, they have an old chart to steer by, but never go near the areas which warn “there be pirates and sea monsters here,” well I did say it was an old chart! Mini cruises are usually a day trip into the Mediterranean for a cruise along the cost to Cartagena or maybe Torrevieja sometimes taking in an overnight stop. The group is very friendly and sociable, having regular lunches out for Menu del dia at various restaurants in the area. New members are welcome whether you have any sailing ability or not. Also new skippers who hold an ICC or have sailing ability to a minimum of Day Skipper are needed. Sailing goes on for most of the year enjoying all the seasons afloat and experiencing the Mar Menor in all its guises. The group has their own assessment and training as the handling characteristics of Hamoor are very different from a mono-hull. So have I tempted you to take a closer look into the pleasures sailing can bring? If the answer is yes then just give Mike or Derek a call and arrange to have a chat over a coffee.
