Bank of Spain warns about impact of political uncertainty on the economy

more to balance its accounts and contain spending. “These developments highlight the need for economic policies to give priority both to seeing through fiscal consolidation, which is essential for maintaining confidence, and to persevering with the application of structural reforms that
reduce the vulnerabilities of the Spanish economy and enable its future growth capacity to be enhanced.” If confirmed, the expected slowdown in economic growth will represent an added difficulty in the quest to reduce Spain’s public deficit from 5.2% of GDP in 2015. http://elpais.com/
Santander to close 425 branches and lay off workers
New quarterly report forecasts growth, but not at the pace expected by the government. The Bank of Spain has just released its quarterly report on the Spanish economy. The Bank of Spain has just released its quarterly report on the Spanish economy. Carlos Rosillo The Spanish economy is slowing down. At least, that is the latest forecast from the Bank of Spain, which does not believe the government’s assertion that gross domestic product (GDP) will continue to grow at a pace of around 3% this year and the next. “In Spain, the information available is consistent with a gradual, moderate slowdown in activity from the high pace of expansion sustained throughout 2015,” reads the central bank’s quarterly economic report, released on Friday. The report authors also note that even though their downward revision to 2.7% is moderate, “the balance of risks surrounding this baseline scenario has worsened considerably in recent
months.” Doubts over the future course of economic policies may have a negative bearing on private agents’ spending decisions BANK OF SPAIN QUARTERLY REPORT Chief among these risks is political uncertainty, said the central lender. This concern mirrors misgivings by the European Commission regarding the stalemate in Spain, which is yet to name a new prime minister following inconclusive elections in December. “Doubts over the future course of economic policies may have a negative bearing on private agents’ spending decisions, especially if the current situation of uncertainty extends over time,” says the report, which is part of the Bank of Spain’s Economic Bulletin. The report also makes a note of geopolitical and financial market tensions at the international level, which could have an impact on Spain’s economy. In line with Brussels, the Bank of Spain is recommending that the country do
A Fiddler On The Roof!
STUDIO32 the Costa Blanca’s leading amateur musical theatre company are well into rehearsals for their summer production of “Fiddler On The Roof”. This is by far the most ambitious musical they have attempted to date but it holds no fear for a very talented array of actors.
The Fiddler is played by Jacob Baylis, pictured, one of our younger talents who recently played one of the hench rats - Tuck - in our pantomime “Dick Whittington”. Jacob appears at various points throughout the show, accompanying the lead role Tevye played by Bill Nicholson, and providing some haunting melodies to set the scenes. The audience will be treated to some fine acting, dancing and songs including “If I Were A Rich Man”, “Sunrise Sunset” and “Matchmaker Matchmaker”. Show dates are Wednesday June 1st to Saturday June 4th at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio, all performances start at 7.30pm with doors open 7pm. Reserved seating tickets are now on sale, priced at 9 euros, and can be obtained by calling Philip on 642 080 258, by emailing tickets@studiothirtytwo.org , or from the following outlets: Tourist Information, La Marina 966 790 021, Cards & More, La Marina 966 790 954, The Card Place, Benijofar 966 713 266, Kennedy Supermarket, Los Montesinos 966 720 006
Lender is reorganizing network due to greater use of online and mobile banking by clients Santander is planning to close around 425 branches throughout Spain. EFE Falling revenues and greater use of online and mobile banking have led Banco Santander to announce layoffs and the closure of 425 branches in Spain, representing 10% of the total in the country. Bank officials said the exact number of firings has not been decided yet. Some unions are estimating that figure to be somewhere between 850 and 1,100 people. The move is part of a network reorganization by Santander, which plans to have 1,000 large branches with around eight employees in each one within three years. This type of large bank branch is commonplace in other European countries, particularly in Germany. This year, Santander plans to have 350 such offices up and running. Some of the employees from the closing branches will be transferred to the bigger premises, said the lender. Santander told the unions that it is trying to eliminate the smaller branches that only perform mechanical transactions, as customers increasingly do that on their computers and mobile devices.
The lender wants to move employees to bigger branches that will focus on providing clients with personal advice, and create more opportunities for selling them complex products with higher commissions for the bank. This type of large bank branch is commonplace in other European countries, particularly in Germany. Some union sources said that the move also aims to bring in fresh blood at the staff and management levels. In 2014, Santander offered early retirement to 2,011 employees, most of whom were branch workers. The Spanish group has been led by Ana Botín ever since her father, Emilio Botín, died in September of that year. http://elpais.com/
Spanish Police Arrest 3 for Threatening a Flight by Phone
Two men and a woman have been arrested in central Spain on suspicion they caused an airliner that had taken off from Madrid’s airport to turn back, police said in a statement Saturday. The incident occurred Dec. 14 when Spain’s airport authority received a call with a recorded voice threatening a flight bound for Sao Paulo, Brazil from Barajas using phrases including “today people will die” in Spanish and “Allah is great” in Arabic, the statement said. On board were 315 passengers and 16 crew. The plane was escorted back to the airport by Spanish air force fighters. A runway was closed as passengers and cargo were inspected, but police found no explosives and the incident was declared a false alarm.
The call was traced to a phone booth in a town near Cuenca and detectives determined that the suspects were linked to a passenger on the flight who was being extradited from Europe to her country of origin, the statement said. The passenger had been refused entry into Schengen territory because of a prohibition order issued by Switzerland, the statement said. The suspects were in custody Saturday in a jail in the city of Tarrancon, midway between Madrid and Cuenca, pending an appearance before an investigating magistrate, the statement said. Authorities might seek to recover the cost of the airport security operation that exceeded 200,000 euros ($228,000), the statement said. http://abcnews.go.com/

UK weather: Britain was hotter than Spain as temperatures hit 18 degrees
to Storm Katie which caused damage to buildings in late March, are due to a shift in wind direction, bringing in continental tropical air.
A change in continental winds means Britain will welcomed in its first warm spell of the year Warm air coming in from the continent will bring unseasonably sunny weather with it this weekend, with parts of Britain to enjoy conditions comparable to the Mediterranean. Last Saturday, temperatures were expected to reach 18C in London and 17C across the southern and central England in the first warm weather of the year. The weather will be similar to Barcelona and hotter than Madrid, which is expecting 15C. Temperatures will be over 5C higher than what is typical for April, which is usually around 11C. The changes, a marked contrast
Met Office forecaster Craig Snell said: “Warmer air will become widespread on Sunday and a lot of us will notice a slightly warmer feel, slightly muggier. It will be the first widespread warm spell we have seen this year. “There will be plenty of dry and bright weather but there will be rain at some times. “We will continue to see the warm air coming up from the continent but it looks like a much more showery day on Monday. It’s a brief taste of warmer weather which ended on Tuesday.” However, there will still be a risk of frost at night. Temperatures are expected to return to normal today. http://www.independent.co.uk/

Netflix to film period drama series in Spain for broadcasting in 190 countries
ONLINE film and TV network Netflix will produce a period drama based entirely in Spain next year, which will be shown in 190 countries. Sources from the channel say filming will start this year in the Spanish capital and the series will hit the small screen in 2017. As yet, no title, characters or possible cast have been revealed, other than that it will be based in 1920s' Madrid and centred on the lives of four very different women who are taken on to work in a telephone operating centre. These four women travel from their different native locations in Spain to live and work in the metropolis, in what was at the time a cutting-edge professional role within Madrid's burgeoning telecommunications revolution. Naturally, the lives of the main characters and those around them are never far from jealousy, envy and betrayal, hunger for success at any cost, friendship, love, and dreams shattered and realised. The drama will be brought to Netflix customers' screens by Bambú Productions, which has already created Spanish period series including Gran Hotel and Velvet, but the new show is expected to be the most international one yet to
be filmed in Spain. Each of the 16 episodes of the first season will last around 50 minutes. Executive producer of the series, Teresa Fernández Valdés, says she finds it 'fantastic' to be able to work with 'such a talented team' as Netflix, a broadcaster which is 'revolutionising the world of TV worldwide'. So far, Gran Hotel and Velvet have become hugely popular with Netflix customers, with many of those in Spain saying they are pleasantly surprised by the quality, intrigue, plot and entertainment value of Netflix serials and that they are very much looking forward to seeing what the new one will be like. “We're sure our subscribers will love it,” says international deputy chairman of Netflix's channel Originales, Erik Barmack. At present, Netflix – which has only recently reached Spain – has over 75 million subscribers in over 190 countries and is officially a world leader in internet-based TV. It airs over 125 million hours of films, documentaries, dramas and serials daily, many of which are its own creation. http://www.thinkspain.com/

Giant fireball streaks over Spain ‘turning night into day’
A fireball that shone ten times brighter than the moon was spotted at 4.26am on Thursday and captured on video from La Hita Observatory in Toledo. Described as an “especially spectacular” display, the meterorite could be seen hitting the Earth’s atmosphere from Madrid, Castilla-La Mancha, Valencia, Murcia and Andalucia. José María Mateido, an astrophysist
ort
on Spain’s SMART (Spectroscopy of Meteoroids in the Atmosphere by means of Robotic Technologies) project, a collaboration between Spanish observatories described the fireball as “amazing”. The Huelva university professor explained that the meteorite - rock from a comet - likely had a mass of around 30kg gave out the extraordinarily bright light when it hit Earth’s atmosphere at around 90,000km per hour. “This amazing fireball turned the night into day for a fraction of a second.” http://www.thelocal.es/

pause for thought
It quite amuses me at times how often folk explain that they don’t need to go to Church to be a Christian. And of course they’re absolutely right; it’s entirely possible to be a Christian and never attend any Church, just as it’s perfectly possible for a couple to be married without ever living together. It is, as I say possible, but extremely stressful and most unusual. For being married normally suggests a loving and trusting relationship, only truly fulfilled in being together. And whilst absence may indeed make the heart grow fonder, yet true love suffers considerable agony during periods of enforced separation, and few would choose to unnecessarily extend the time they spend away from those they love. And like a marriage, true Christianity’s a relationship built on love and trust, rather than just a belief. A marriage without love is necessarily empty and unfulfilling and the same is true of Christianity. For if I really believe that Jesus loved so much that he gave his all, suffering the worst that inhumanity could throw at him in my place, paying the penalty for all the wrong I have ever thought, said or done, then surely I cannot but respond with at least some love in return. For me to do otherwise must necessarily
pour doubt on my alleged faith, which must as a result look pretty empty, unfulfilling and worthless. So yes, it’s possible that I could be a Christian and not go to Church, to listen to his word, to give time for prayer, to celebrate his death as he instructed in the taking of bread and wine and to meet with others who similarly acknowledge their debt of love and service for everything Christ achieved for us all. It’s possible; but I believe extremely difficult, painful and stressful for anyone who really appreciates what it means to be Christian, and not a situation I would lightly choose, any more than I’d choose to live apart from my wife. Both individuals and businesses can support local businesses, all you have to do is: ...whenever you can, buy from a local business as opposed to buying outside of your region. These days, when most people do the majority of their shopping in giant supermarkets, out of town shopping complexes or city centre malls, it can be difficult to draw attention to a small business trading locally. But with concerns being raised over community cohesion, social inclusion and the environment, the local business has never been more important. It’s down to enterprising business owners like you to promote the importance of supporting local businesses so that the public understand why it matters and how it can benefit whole communities. In order to tackle the trend toward supermarket shopping, it’s important to understand why people choose it. Research indicates that the reasons they most frequently cite are the variety of products available and the convenience of having them all in one place.

Do you support C is for... Coys Rent-A-Car local businesses? DRIVE WITH THE BEST...
Challenge this directly through poster campaigns and advertisements which emphasise the variety offered by small independent businesses, contrasted with the way that monopolies tend toward homogenisation.
Remind people how convenient it is to have a lot of small shops offering different products and services located in the area, and how convenient it is to be able to shop close to home. It’s okay to admit that big business has the edge in some areas if you stress that there’s a cost to this. For instance, you could have a poster featuring a pint of milk which acknowledges that it’s cheaper in the supermarket but points out how much less time is spent if it can be picked up nearby, so that it still pays to shop locally. If your business purchases its products locally, it’s worth emphasising this - shopping with you means supporting local producers and cutting down on the environmental costs of long distance transport. If you sell food, it also means getting fresher produce. You can also point out that local businesses mean local jobs and increased opportunities for local people, encouraging the young to stay in the area and become positively involved with the community. It cuts out the daily commute for many people and makes their working lives more pleasant

More than half of people under 35 don’t know how to do simple DIY jobs around the house, according to our research. Well, we’re here to help. Here are some quick, step-by-step tips for some of the more common home improvements that will bring out your inner handyman. How to fix a leaky tap 1. Turn off the water. This is important – you don’t want to flood your house from the inside. There should be a handle under the sink that lets you do this. If not, you can turn off the water at the mains using the outside stopcock. Just turn the valve clockwise a few times and wait a few minutes. You can also turn the tap on to drain any excess water. 2. Remove the handle and any body covers. Most taps have a visible screw between the handle and the body of the tap – unscrew this and pull the handle off. 3. Take out the tap headgear. You should see the tap headgear held in place by a nut at the top. Use an adjustable spanner to remove this nut and take out the headgear. 4. Replace the washer and reassemble the tap. Most leaks are caused by a damaged washer at the bottom of the headgear. Replacing it usually fixes the problem. 5. Turn the water back on and test that everything’s working fine. TOP TIP: Put the plug in the sink before you start taking the tap apart. This’ll make sure no small screws and nuts fall down the plughole. How to replace a broken toilet seat 1. Measure the width and length of your seat before you buy a new one. There’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to toilet seats. 2. Remove the old seat. There should be bolts that go through the hinges to connect the seat to the base. Unscrew the nuts on the
underside and lift the old seat off. 3. Clean the toilet base. Pay close attention to the bolt holes where the old seat was fixed – there’s usually a build-up of grime here. 4. Line up your new seat with the base and push the bolts through the hinges. 5. Place and tighten the nuts to secure the seat. How to fix a creaky floorboard 1. Lift up the carpet or anything covering up the offending floorboard. 2. Sprinkle some talc or flour around the board and on the nails. Creaking is sometimes caused by friction between the board and the nails, so this should ease this friction and stop the creaking. 3. If that doesn’t work, get some 5060mm screws and screw them in right next to the existing screws or nails. Another cause of creaking is that the floorboard has come loose from the supporting joists. Adding new screws in next to the existing ones makes sure that you’re fixing the board to the joist, and not drilling through a cable or pipe. How to replace broken bathroom wall tiles 1. Remove the grouting that surrounds the broken tile with a sharp knife. 2. Use a putty knife to lift out the loose tile. If the tile is too big, hold a cloth over it and hit with a hammer to break into smaller pieces before removing them. 3. Scrape off any adhesive left on the wall and apply a fresh coat of adhesive. 4. Put the new tile in place. The adhesive should let you get the position as you want it before it sets. 5. Grout around the new tile, then wipe with a damp cloth. It’s as simple as that! If you’re not too confident in your DIY abilities, or if the job looks more complicated, then it’s probably worth getting in a professional. http://www.confused.com/

Fast facts on hay fever Here are some key points about hay fever. More detail and supporting information is in the main article. Allergic rhinitis, often called hay fever, is a common condition that causes symptoms such as sneezing, stuffy nose, runny nose, watery eyes and itching of the nose, eyes or the roof of the mouth. Roughly 7.8% of people 18 and over in the US suffer from hay fever. Around 17.6 million (7.5%) adults in the US are diagnosed with hay fever per year. There are 6.6 million (9%) children diagnosed with hay fever each year in the US. A 2010 study suggests that white children are more likely to have hay fever (10%) than black children (7%). Allergic rhinitis can be seasonal or perennial. Symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis occur in spring, summer and early fall. The symptoms of hay fever are usually caused by allergic sensitivity to pollens from trees, grasses or weeds, or to airborne mold spores. Allergic rhinitis treatment options are: avoidance, eliminating or decreasing your exposure to the
irritants or allergens that trigger your symptoms, medication and immunotherapy. Immunotherapy (allergy shots) helps reduce hay fever symptoms in about 85 percent of people with allergic rhinitis. Allergic diseases, which include asthma, are the fifth most prevalent chronic diseases in all ages, and the third most common in children. http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/

5 arid and semi-arid garden plants in Spain Grow with success Gardening, isn't that hard work and reliant on a regular water supply? A Spanish or Mediterranean garden doesn't have to require regular watering. Green fingers can still work their magic under the Spanish sun with these 10 sun loving plants. Warm and pleasant Spain We all love the warm rays of the Spanish sun, and a holiday here both invigorates and recharges the
batteries, as much as safely topping up that longed-for golden tan. But gardening in Spain is another ball game entirely, and it can be quite frustrating trying to maintain an oasis of colour and scent when the sun is at its zenith. The summer months don't mean that you have to live in desert-like conditions though, there are plants that will thrive on very little water, and they're perfect for gardening with satisfaction in Spain. Take a hike Just a ramble through the countryside will show you that plants can survive anywhere, the mountains of Andalucia burst with colour and scent in spring, dormant shoots pushing through what looks like dry and barren earth, making a Spanish-style family hike a very pleasant alternative from the beach. Green fingers So, whether you have a patch of land to call your own, a few acres or even hectares of terra firma, or even just an unloved balcony or terrace, let’s explore the horticultual world and discover what are the best planting options - looking at 10 arid and semi arid loving plants suitable for Spain. Rules and regulations There’re a few fast rules, which are easy to remember and abide by: Look at the leaves. Choose ones that feel like felt, are furry, waxy or silvery in colour. The latter reflects light, the first ones mentioned are all tougher and less susceptible to damage by sunlight. Plant according to what you’ve got, check out where the sunniest corner is on your patch, likewise the shadiest, and use these natural locations wisely. Mulch. A layer of bark will protect he roots from the drying effects of the sun, keep in any water, and look pretty and neat into the bargain. See what the neighbours are up to! Have a peek over the fence and see what grows best before you splash out your hard earned cash at the garden centre.

Contact 950 121 936 or email sales@soltimes.com to Advertise in this section 4. Hypericum Squat and bushy ornamental plants with showy flowers that just keep on flowering. Some species fall under the RHS society of Garden Merit, and they're a brilliant plant of you're thinking rockery with some nice beach-like pebbles and stones. They handle the heat well, as they're protective of themselves, owing to the squat and dense shape and structure. 5. Kalanchoe Another type of succulent, with fat rubbery leaves and tiny clusters of showy flowers, plant them small in pots for your balcony, into a rockery or together in clumps for colour and low structure. The leaves will soak up and water and dole it out accordingly to the plant's needs. They're really inexpensive too - so you can go to town on a lot of them if you like without breaking the bank. http://www.spain-holiday.com/ 1. Succulents and Cacti. Have a look at places that are hot all year round, the Canary Islands for example. Everywhere you'll encounter species of Cacti and Succulent thriving under the midday sun. They're practically impossible to kill off, and can be ignored completely for lenghty periods. They also survive cooler weather pretty well, but bear in mind some of the Cacti can be pretty vicious, so if you rent your place to families and children then maybe avoid some of the more prickly varieties. The same warning goes for poisonous plants, if in doubt just ask at your local garden centre. Some other succulents are Agave, Aloe, Echeveria, Euphorbia and Sedum. 2. Cycas These are mostly stunning trees, can be grown in pots, and make great architectural features, they're the wow factor plants. They take a long time to grow, but you can pick them up in mature states very reasonably here in Spain. If you're here in Andalucia, I recommend the Viveros Reina on the Costa Tropical, close to Motril, for a huge and healthy selection of plants and friendly advice, I have used them professionally for almost 8 years with no complaints. 3. Hibiscus

Cloudbusting
A little over 30 years ago in 1985; a song was released alongside a cinematic video. The film featured the actor Donald Sutherland who plays Wilhelm Reich and Kate Bush who plays Reich’s son Peter. The song was of course Cloudbusting and is based on real events. Kate Bush had read Peter’s book A Book of Dreams nine years prior and said the book had called to her from the shelf. Written through his childhood eyes the book describes Peter’s relationship with his father. Bush says further that his father was the magic in his life and taught everything to Peter; including to be open-minded and not to put up barriers. Sadly when Wilhelm Reich was taken away by the FBI and later imprisoned in 1956 Peter realised that adults were not infallible. Reich left Hitler’s Germany via Norway on the last ship to sail to America before war broke out just days later in 1939. The United States was supposedly safe yet he was first arrested in 1941 and sent to Ellis Island prisoner as a suspected fascist sympathiser. He was released a few weeks later as it was a case of mistaken identity. Reich was a famed psychoanalyst and credited with starting the ‘Sexual Revolution,’ a term he first coined. He invented the Orgone accumulator that supposedly stored the sexual energy of any patient who went inside it. This energy would then be released inside the box and so he claimed; cure illnesses including cancer. This machine proved

HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane. APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take. LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This doesn’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout
keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes. his undoing. R e i c h also turned the box inside out so energy could be directed out and up. This would dispel another force he called Deadly Orgone Radiation which he said created desertification. Using fifteen foot aluminium pipes and electric cables that were put into containers of water; Reich claimed the machine would create rain and called it the Cloudbuster. In summer 1953 during a drought in Maine; Two Blueberry farmers hired Reich to save their fruit crop. The farmers paid up when rain fell the next morning. In Bush’s video the rain is witnessed by Reich as he’s driven away by the FBI. Reich’s Orgone Accumulator meanwhile was being investigated as a potential fraudulent product by the FDA. Hilariously’ a professor from Oregon who’d bought one said he suspected it was a scam but it kept his wife quiet for four hours a day whilst she sat in it. Eventually in 1954 the FDA banned the interstate shipment of the devices nor any promotional material. Reich complied with the order but in 1956 whilst he was away; the FDA set up a sting operation. One of his assistants fell for it and posted a spare part to another State. Reich and the assistant were arrested and eventually
imprisoned. Before being locked up they both had to return to their workshop and destroy the five machines there whilst the FDA witnessed them do it. Two months later to add insult to injury the FDA ordered that six tons of Reich’s books be burned. Reich had to pay for the lorry and a team of three to deliver the literature to an incinerator where again the FDA witnessed the destruction. Reich said it was a similar feeling to a condemned man being ordered to dig his own grave. This final act has been described as the worst act of censorship in the history of the US. A month before being released Reich wrote to his son Peter to arrange a restaurant to meet for dinner in to celebrate. Sadly Wilhelm Reich suffered a fatal heart attack before being released and his son never saw him again. In Kate Bush’s video the arrest of Reich is shown plus the destruction of his work. As a subtle homage – Kate’s character Peter is fleetingly glimpsed taking a book from his father’s pocket as he is being taken away. That book is The Book of Dreams which Peter wrote in 1973.

Home Sellers Reduced Prices by Average of 14% in 2015 Owners who sold their homes in Spain in 2015 had to reduce the initial selling price by an average of 14%. This reduction is equivalent to an average decrease in price of 33,400 euros and is one percentage point below the average reduction that was made in 2014 (15%). These are some of the conclusions taken from a survey carried out by property portal, fotocasa, on Spaniards’ experience of selling homes in 2015, which also indicates that the average reduction in home prices implemented in 2015 is the lowest in the past six years. The survey also reveals that 36% of the owners who put their homes up for sale in 2015 did sell, which is higher than the figure recorded in 2014 (28%), and that it took an average of 10.6 months to achieve the sale, almost a month less than it took a year earlier, when the average was 11.5 months. Specifically, the portal’s survey shows that in 2015, 44% of the owners sold their homes
in under six months, while 25% took between 7 and 12 months, 16% took between 13 and 24 months, and 15% took more than 24 months. According to the portal’s head of research, Beatriz Toribio, the housing market is showing greater dynamism than in the worst years of the crisis but it has not yet recovered. However in 2015, those who managed to sell their homes took less time to do it and applied a lower reduction. Moreover, Toribio stressed that it is necessary to lower the price in order to sell, and that 81% of the owners who managed to sell their homes in 2015 had done so. Some 46% of those surveyed said that the home they put up for sale in 2015 was their main residence, followed by 22% who were selling a second residence, and 18% who were selling a home that they had inherited. https://news.kyero.com
According to a recent survey conducted by the professional real estate services company, JLL, together with the IESE Business School, some 89% of the investors questioned indicated that they have a high or very high interest in investing in the Spanish property market, although they highlighted the political uncertainty, strong competition and the shortage of product among the determining factors in the short term. The study, prepared by questioning over 100 domestic and international real estate investors, revealed that more than half of the respondents (53.5%) were searching for investments in Spain with a value of up to 100 million euros, compared with 46.6% who are looking for investments exceeding 100 million euros. With regard to types of assets,
offices in Madrid and Barcelona were the top choice of product for 53% of the investors, followed by logistics assets (46%) and shopping centres (44%). Behind the top three, the most interesting products for 41% of the investors were commercial premises and hotels, while 38% indicated they planned to invest in residential assets and 31% in land. El Mundo reported that, among the short- and medium-term plans for investors, the study also highlighted the important role of renovation and refurbishment, with 79% of investors saying they would carry out any kind of work to increase the value of their property – 43% with the aim of keeping it in their portfolio and 36% in order to sell. kyero.com

Mapped: Where to find Spain's cheapest property
W
hether you’re looking for a new life or just a holiday home, Spain has an undeniable appeal for Britons: sun, sea and sand - coupled with cheap property and a lower cost of living. For those who are interested in buying a property in Spain, detailed information on local house prices is now available.
The map below, using data from Spanish property portal Kyero, shows the typical ("median") asking price for more than 400 Spanish cities and towns, focusing on the Mediterranean coastline. Cities and towns needed at least 100 properties to be included in the map, but most of the figures are based on samples of 1,000 properties or more. Spain suffered particularly heavily in the aftermath of the global financial crisis and its property boom
and bust was more pronounced than in the UK. Unlike in Britain, where house prices have been recovering strongly, Spanish prices have remained low. Unemployment and debt levels are both high, although the country has been growing strongly compared with many of its European counterparts. There is still plenty of opportunity for British buyers to pick up property at low prices, which could fall further in sterling terms if the UK votes to remain in the European Union, which is likely to cause the pound to strengthen against the euro. Spanish Home Rental Prices Have Dropped by 29.6% Since 2007 According to the latest study property portal, Beatriz Toribio,
carried out by property portal, fotocasa, the price of rental property in Spain has reduced by an average of 239 euros since the maximum prices reached in May 2007. At that time, the cost of renting an apartment of 80 square metres was 810 euros on average (10.12 euros/m2), while in February this year, the average rent stood at 570 euros. This 239 euros drop in the rental price is equivalent to a reduction of -29.6% in nine years. Head of Research for the
highlighted the fact that renting an apartment in Spain is currently nearly 30% cheaper than in 2007, but that rental prices have started to recover in the last two years due to increased interest and the greater demand noted since the crisis began, which explains the resistance of owners to continue to lower their rental prices, and hence 2015 ended with the portal registering the highest increase (3.6%) recorded in their real estate index.
There are still expensive hotspots in Spain of course, with average prices along the coast west of Malaga tipping the scales at over £750,000 in places. Some locations on the islands of Palma and Ibiza see average asking prices of more than £1m. However, these are the exceptions rather than the rule. The average price in the port city of Alicante is £119,050, while Buñol (home to the tomato throwing festival) is less than 25 miles from Valencia but has an average property price of £103,500. On Spain’s southern coast, in the region of Andalusia, prices can be high, but there are numerous locations where the average asking price is less than £100,000. The cheapest town mapped is Martos, located inland and known for its olive oil production – the average asking price is just £34,000. For those looking outside the Spanish mainland, the Canary Islands also offer a number of property opportunities. Tenerife, the largest of the islands, has multiple options available with average asking prices of less than £200,000. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/
Aragón is the region which has registered the largest drop in rental prices, with a reduction of 349 euros on average in eight years. Since the maximum price recorded in June 2008 (10.85 euros/m2), when renting a house cost an average of 868 euros, the price has dropped by -40.3%, to the current cost of 519 euros on average. In contrast, rental prices in Castilla y León have fallen least in recent years, with the average price reduction standing at around 81 euros since the maximum prices reached in May 2008. Back then, renting an apartment of 80 square metres cost an average of 532 euros, and in February 2016 the average rent was 451 euros. In terms of prices, in February 2016 the most expensive region for home rental prices was the
Basque Country where renting a home costs an average of 813 euros. Since the maximum levels of August 2008, the price has dropped by 127 euros, which is equivalent to a decline of -13.5%. Extremadura is the most economical region for home rentals, where renting an apartment of 80 square metres costs an average of 358 euros. Since their maximum price recorded in June 2008, when the rental cost an average of 443 euros, the price has reduced by 85 euros, which represents a decline of -19.2%. kyero.com

Experiences in Elche Cultural Tourism
The land which was the birthplace of the Lady of Elche bust, which witnessed in fascination the emergence of that medieval wonder known as the Misteri, the Mystery Play. The land where hundreds of thousands of palm trees have been sown, cultivated and nurtured, and under whose gentle shadow the daily lives of the citizens run their course. The land which has been deemed worthy of two declarations as a Unesco World Heritage Site, must be, by rights, a land of nuances and contrasts. A peaceful walk through the streets and squares of the historic centre of Elche allows one to discover a combination of grand, monumental buildings (the Basilica of Santa Maria, the Alcazar de la Señoria, the Calahorra Tower, the Convent of la Merced, the Town Hall, among others), testimony to a rich past, standing alongside the newer constructions of young and dynamic city. This great architectural wealth is complemented by a network of museums whose contents are of undeniable interest to the visitor. The strategic location of the original site of the city at La Alcudia, two kilometres south of the current city, marked out its early historical. Through it passed several civilizations, whose legacy lives on at the museum and archaeological site. The remains left behind by Neolithic culture demonstrate the presence of human civilisation dating from five thousand years before our the current era. Iberians, Romans and Arabs The Iberian and Roman periods (V century B.C to II century A.D) were the most splendid of the
Nature reserves
The 326,5 square kilometres of the extensive district of Elche offer the visitor a wide range of landscapes, habitats, flora and fauna, divided between three different ecosystems. The hills and mountains which form the sierras or ranges of the inland part of the district, the sand dune areas on the coast and the typical Mediterranean coastal wetlands, which lie between the other two areas. The wetlands of Elche constitute some of the most important in the Autonomous Valencian Region and form some of the last vestiges of the extensive marshlands or salt marshes in existance along its coastal strip. Only the Valencian Albufera region exceeds the area of El Hondo Nature Reserve, which lies between between Elche and Crevillente, in ecological and ornithological importance. The Clot de Galvany Nature Reserve, which forms part of the wetlands of the small town of Balsares, and connects them with the dune systems of Arenales and Carabassí, constitutes another
ancient city, with the construction of magnificent buildings, temples and a profusion of sculptures, such as the Lady of Elche bust. It was, in all likelihood, the cultural and religious focal point for the surrounding lands, and in turn it received Mediterranean influence through the nearby port, Portus Illicitanus, the current town of Santa Pola. During its time as a Roman colony, Illici, as it was known, came to issue its own currency. After several French, German and Byzantine invasions, the city entered a period of domination by the Hispano-Roman peoples of the Visigoth culture, thus acquiring a new importance. It came to have its own Episcopate, with Bishops forming several Councils and an important Basilica, whose remains can be visited at La Alcudia. Between the IX and X centuries, Arabs originating from Egypt founded a new town called Ils, next to a stretch of the river two kilometres north of the previous site. They protected it with city walls, of which the main Tower, La Calahorra, still remains to this day. Trade and financial activity went through a phase of splendour, thanks to developments in agriculture. An example of this social well-being are the XII century Arab Baths in the centre of the city. The Archaeological and History Museum of Elche (MAHE) invites the visitor to see a comprehensive overview of the upheavals of the city´s past, both at its former site as well as at its current one, which is brought alive with interactive displays. The Palm Grove, World Heritage Site The grand Palm Grove, part of the inheritance of the four centuries of Arab rule, is the unequivocal
noteworthy element of Elche´s rich environmental heritage
World Heritage
No other Spanish town has ever had three cultural assets registered in the different categories of the UNESCO World Heritage List. And that makes us definitely unique. Palm Grove Elche was first awarded in 2000 when the historical Palmeral of Elche was declared a World Heritage. Not only was awarded the work of our ancestors at the same time that it made our palm grove –which
symbol of a city which has known how to strive to make optimum use of the land in the face of the relentless, burning sun and scarcity of water. The use of water, its distribution and the need to make the most of supplies has been a constant factor in the landscape of Elche, which continues to employ a network of irrigation channels, partitions, branches and cascades dating from Islamic times. All this was decisive in the declaration of the Palm Grove as one of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. The Palm Grove Museum provides the visitor with the opportunity to discover a grove of palm trees along with its traditional form of irrigation, typical produce and white palm craftsmanship. The Centre of Traditional Culture at the School Museum of Pusol brings together a collection of memories and artefacts of the inhabitants of the area and of the city, with examples of the old crafts, rural labour, trade, leisure activities and customs which have shaped the lives and the future of the small towns and villages of the countryside around Elche and the city itself during the XX century. The Contemporary Art Museum (MACE), in middle of Main Square of the of El Raval district of the city, where the Muslim population settled after their expulsion from the Walled City from the Christian conquest of 1265, provides a wide and varied overview of Spanish vanguard art of the last decades of the last century. In the same district a journey may be made to the more distant past at the Paleontological Museum (MUPE). Here fossils found in the area, together with bones and skeletal reconstructions of large dinosaurs, as the such as the terrifying T-Rex are on display. shapes us, accompany us and enriches us– full of life, but also the people from Elche who, all along the centuries, have known how to preserve it as an indissoluble character even if it is no longer a profitable crop. Palm trees are sacred assets in Elche. The award for this way of thinking is a daily life under the lovely shades they provide. Mystery Play A year after that, in 2001, the UNESCO created a new category for Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. And we are proud because the Mystery play known as “El Misteri” or “Festa d’Elx”, was the first Spanish traditional celebration which was included in this new list. Together with the palm grove, “la Festa” is a symbol of identity. We have a third symbol of identity (a mythical trilogy), the Lady of Elche which has the rare privilege of being in two places at the same time, i.e. in the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid and in the hearts of all the people from Elche without exception. http://www.visitelche.com/

euros in January, after falling by 4.4% over the previous 12 months, while the credit balance outstanding in the cooperatives dropped by 2%, to stand at 52,710 million euros, and the financial institutions recorded a decline in the outstanding balance of 12.3%, to 8,215 million euros. Moving out of London, rising flat prices, and home improvement hotspots
The average price of a flat in the UK has risen from £150,749 at the end of 2008 to £237,223, according to the latest research from Halifax, outperforming all other types of property. On average, people are now paying almost £20,000 more for a flat than for a semi-detached home. A major factor is the rapid increase in flat prices in London – if London is excluded, then terraced homes top the price rise list, followed by semi-detached, then flats, and finally detached. Leaving London Around four in 10 first-time buyers in London say they are willing to move to a more affordable part of the UK if it means they would be able to buy their first property. The poll from Yorkshire Building Society also reveals that a quarter would even consider moving to another country to do so. A separate report from Generation Rent says that housing costs are forcing
young families out of London, with net migration from the city among thirtysomethings and children under 10 up by a quarter since 2012. It shows two thirds moved to the South East and East of England commuter belt, 12 per cent went to the Midlands, and a similar figure to the North of England. Bolton drop Research by eMoov.co.uk indicates that since 2000 the city centre of Bolton is the only area in England and Wales that has seen a decrease in the average property values, down from £77,202 to £70,621. Home improvement hotspots People living in Kensington and Chelsea lead the nation in home improvement planning applications with 7.3 for every 100 homes in 2015. The fewest applications were made in Blackpool (0.4 for every 100 homes). Cambridge saw the biggest increase
Spain – Third Most Attractive European Country for Real Estate Investment
Spain is Europe’s third most attractive country for investing in real estate in 2016, according to the CBRE ‘Global Investors Intentions Survey 2016’, presented during the MIPIM World’s Property Market exhibition earlier this month in Cannes. Specifically, Spain is the country of choice for real estate investment this year for 10.2% of those surveyed, standing below only Germany (17%) and the United Kingdom (15.1%), and is placed as more attractive than countries such as the Netherlands and France. Furthermore, Madrid maintains its 2015 position as the second most attractive European city in which to invest, with 12.2% of the respondents considering it a favourite destination for investment. However, El Mundo reported that
in home improvement planning applications in 2015 compared to 2013 and 2014, up 119 per cent. Overall, the report shows that rural areas are far more likely to be hotspots of home improvement activity than more urban locations. A separate report from Sainsbury's Bank shows that just over one in ten UK adults has carried out home improvements costing more than £25,000 in the past two years. First time buyers The number of home sales to firsttime buyers jumped seven per cent between February 2015 and February 2016 to 21,100. The figures from Your Move and Reeds Rains show that in February the average deposit put down by a first-time buyer was £29,451, an increase of nearly 15 per cent year-on-year. Unsurprisingly, London remains the most expensive spot for first-time buyers with the average value of a first-time buyer property £314,626, followed by the South East (£211,638). The North East £114,163) and Northern Ireland £99,294) are the two cheapest areas. Boat Race locations If you were inspired by last week’s Boat Races to buy by the Thames, a survey by HouseSimple.com indicates that average property price along the route (Putney Bridge, past Fulham, Hammersmith, Chiswick, Barnes and to Chiswick Bridge at Mortlake) now tops £1 million, up £514,532 in the past 10 years. Barnes is the most
the investment forecasts have shown greater diversification compared to previous years, since some 53 different cities have been mentioned in the survey, notably the markets of central and eastern Europe in terms of investment, with cities such as Warsaw, Budapest, Prague and Bucharest being listed among the top 15 most attractive locations. According to the report, assets such as student residences are some of those which have attracted the greatest increase in interest among real estate investors this year, followed by health and leisure centres, while the residential sector is the area that has registered most growth compared to last year, rising from 5% to 12%. kyero.com expensive at £1,534,862, up 72 per cent in the last decade. New build Latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show that detached homes in England and Wales were the most commonly sold type of newly built property between September 2014 and September 2015. They account for a third of all new property sales, overtaking sales of new flats. The ONS report shows that a newlybuilt property was just as likely as an existing property to sell for £1 million or more last year, a big change from five years ago, when new properties were less than half as likely to sell for over £1 million as other ones. In total, the number of homes sold for £1 million or more in England and Wales has increased to over 70 times the level of 1995 - last year, 1.6 per cent of all property sales were for £1 million or more. Living at home The most popular reason why young adults say they still live at home is that they want to be with their family. In second place in the study by Direct Blinds was saving for house deposit, but overall a third had not fled the nest because they simply could not afford to rent by themselves. Indeed, one in five had no fixed rental arrangements, simply helping out when possible and 15 per cent paid no rent at all. http://www.independent.co.uk/

How to Clean a Swimming Pool
Every pool owner wants the same thing - sparkling blue water. A little elbow grease and some helpful cleaning accessories work in conjunction with the pool filter and sanitizing chemicals to keep your pool clean.
property services
cleaning routine. The fourth step is to manually vacuum your pool, unless you have anautomatic pool cleaner. If you have a pool cleaner, turn it on and relax while you let it do its work. Manually Vacuuming Your Pool To manually vacuum the pool, follow these steps: 1. Attach the vacuum head to a telescopic pole and the hose to the vacuum head. Slowly lower it into the pool. 2. When it reaches the bottom, continue to feed the hose into the pool until all the air has been purged from the hose. If you connect the hose to your pump with air still in it, you could burn out your swimming pool pump. 3. Once all the air has been removed from the hose, pass the end of the hose through the skimmer door and plug it into the vacuum port. Turn on the pump to start the vacuum’s suction. 4. Make sure the vacuum inlet is the only open line to the pump. 5. Vacuum your pool in the same way you vacuum your carpet, starting at the shallow end and working your way into the deep end with long, slow, sweeping strokes. After you finish running your automatic pool cleaner or manually vacuuming your pool, it’s time to brush the pool’s sides and floor. Use an 18” nylon or poly-bristle brush and move dirt towards the drain. Start on the walls at the shallow end, working your way to the deep end with long, slow, sweeping strokes. Next, immediately wash all your pool cleaning tools with fresh water and store them out of the sun. The chemicals in the pool water and the sun’s rays can make them deteriorate more quickly. Backwash or clean your filter, and empty your skimmer and pump baskets again. The last step in your pool cleaning routine is to add water if your water level is low. Just don’t cause a flood by getting caught up in other household tasks and leaving your water running! Also, don’t use softened water in your Prompt and reliable service, pool; it will cause corrosion and rapid chlorine loss. no job too small. Add this cleaning routine Full bathrooms or just makeovers to your pool maintenance and handyman service. program and your pool will always be ready for you and 24 hour call out your family to enjoy!
Establishing a cleaning routine for your swimming pool is an important aspect of pool maintenance. Follow these simple steps and your pool will reward your efforts with debris-free swimming. Here are the basic tools you’ll need for cleaning your pool: Pool skimmer Pumice stone or tile brush Pool wall brush Vacuum head and hose or automatic pool cleaner Telescopic pole First, skim the surface of your pool water for floating leaves and debris. Once they sink, they will be a lot harder to remove and may even stain pool surfaces. Next, scrub scale away along the water line. Use a pumice stone or tile brush for tiled areas. If you use a pumice stone, remember to keep it wet to avoid scratching your tile. Never use a pumice stone on a vinyl pool liner. Empty your skimmer and pump baskets. This can be a messy task! When it’s time to upgrade your pool pump, consider newer models with larger, easy-to-remove baskets that are clear so you can see when they need to be emptied. This will help you streamline your pool

viewpoint
The Alquerian Plumber is simple, he is a complete idiot. Manuel
Getting a plumber in Madrid or Bilbao is a relatively simply affair. The plumbers are reliable and courteous. In other parts of Spain it is more difficult, in Almería, forget it and wash it in the nearest stream. In Alqueria just hope for miracles. There are many plumbers listed in the Alquerian Tradesman Directory unfortunately a phone call to one goes something like this. (Translated from the original Alquerian into English by Pedro Barmyescrito). Frantic housewife. “Hello is that ???????? the plumber” Plumber. “Yes” Frantic housewife. “My cellar is flooding, my children are treading water and the electrics have fused. The water is causing the house to subside and a very large, ugly fish is swimming around my dining room table”. Plumber. “Not to worry, it’ll be fine, you’ll see”. Frantic housewife. “Will you come at once”. Plumber. “Yes, not to worry”. ‘Click’, end of conversation. It is only then that ‘Frantic Housewife’ has realised that the plumber hasn’t asked for an address. The phrase ‘Not to worry’ when translated from the original Alquerian into English has a second meaning which is ‘Not a bloody chance’. At least not when there is wine and tapas on offer and it is always on offer. One plumber however defies convention and always attends when a speed and alacrity which is touching. The reason
Tuboroto has flooded more homes than a tsunami. He has the ability to inspire confidence, he knows all the keywords that plumbers use, he hasn’t got the faintest idea what they mean but he knows them. His Great-grandfather was in charge of the plumbing system on the ‘Titanic’. Contrary to popular belief it wasn’t an iceberg that let in all that water in was a simple leak in the third-engineers loo. Manuel’s Greatgrandfather attended the call. When called he usually arrives within the hour, the poor unsuspecting householder is impressed and amazed at the speed of response. Grinning Manuel will then be led to the troublesome piece of plumbing. Here the householder gets an inkling as to the ineptitude of our worthy ‘fontanero’ as he usually fails to recognise such things as valves, stopcocks, baths and sinks. He once ‘fixed’ the boiler in the town hall. The council are still filling in the hole. His speciality is looking for gas leaks with a cigarette lighter. Manuel favours the ‘Zippo’ lighter for this task as the flames is bigger which makes it easier to find the leak. He always finds it necessary to talk to himself in a light hearted and jolly fashion. Even the occasional explosion can’t dampen his good humour and he can often be seen leaving burning and partially destroyed buildings with a song on his lips and joy in his heart. This above is based on a real occurrence, the names have however been changed.
Swings and Roundabouts
I’ve always thought that a day when I don’t discover something new is a day partially wasted. It doesn’t have to be anything spectacular, like the solution to String Theory, or the source of the Nile; it can be something much more useful, such as how to pour milk out of a cardboard carton without splashing. I should know everything there is to know in the Universe, but for the Swings and Roundabouts Effect. I can, for instance, learn a new Spanish word in the morning only to have forgotten it again by the next day, or even the same afternoon. What I gain on the Swings of knowledge I lose on the Roundabouts of memory! However, I have learnt a few things over the last weeks, and some of them have stuck. I have learned to Rest. I can now recline on the sofa and watch with interested detachment as the dust bunniesof discarded dog and cat hair swirl around the floor in the breeze before coming to a halt in a corner. I used to have to arm myself with pan and brush and pursue them relentlessly, but now I leave them be – I can sweep them up tomorrow, they’ll still be there! I have learnt the advantages of removable hair. It is so simple to put it on, give it a bit of a pat, and presto! I’m ready! It is virtually maintenance-free, and I never have a bad hair day. Another advantage is time and expensively heated water saved when showering. I never realised before how long this took me,

josbiggs@hotmail.co.uk nor how many various bottles of assorted essential jollop I needed for the process. But now, without the burden of home-grown hair, I am in and out in a trice – it is definitely a Swing! However, the Roundabout that goes with it is the lack of insulation that I am now suffering! I have a new-found sympathy with all bald men – I never realised before how coldand vulnerable a hairless head can be! I have discovered Ready Meals - 3 minutes in the microwave and they’re done! The lack of effort spent faffing around more than compensates for their perceived unhealthiness, and as everything tastes the same to me now their flavour is irrelevant. But by far the biggest Swing is the kindness of those around me. Thank you all for your help, kind words and encouragement – and not a Roundabout in sight!

How to deglaze a pan
method Cut the chorizo into 3cm thick slices. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a high heat. Cook the chorizo for 4-5 minutes, turning occasionally until the edges start to crisp and it has released its red oil. Tip the chickpeas into the pan and cook for a couple of minutes until hot. Add the peppers and cook for a few minutes until everything's juicy. Remove from the heat, stir in the coriander, ladle into two bowls and top each with a spoonful of yogurt.
Deglaze your cooking pan to get the most flavour from your steak or roasts by turning the meat juices into the base for a delicious sauce. Heat up the pan in which the meat was cooked so that it is hot. Add wine. The liquid should bubble rapidly. You can also just use a little water, stock or combine stock with wine for a rich sauce. Stir and scrape with a wooden spoon to loosen all the stuck on bits and to combine them into the sauce. If deglazing with wine, allow to bubble for at least five minutes to remove any harsh alcohol taste. Season with a little salt or pepper. Stir to make sure all the flavours have been absorbed into the sauce and then remove from the heat to serve.

Chatters is an informal social group, free of charge and open to all without membership. Just turn up, join in and enjoy. We are sponsored by Help At Home Mar Menor. We meet on the third Wednesday of each month at The Pasty Shack, Rio Nalon, near to the Mercadona in Los Alcazares. Free refreshments are served between 10.15am & 10.45am before we start the meeting at 11am. This includes a Quiz and Picture Quiz with the opportunity to win modest prizes, after which we always have a different Guest Speaker talking about and answering questions about a range of topics of interest and use to Expats. The Speaker at the next Chatters on Wednesday April 20th will be from Coach Trips sl, aka Dave’s Coaches. He will be telling us about all the places they visit, and which trip would best meet you own particular interests. Why not come along and join in? Meet old friends and perhaps make new ones? After the meeting several people regularly stay on to enjoy the Pasty Shack’s delicious range of snacks and lunches. Attendance is growing, and more and more attendees are coming regularly, so be sure to put the date in your diary and to arrive early. Magic in the Moonlight
www.carolnaylor.blogspot.com - www.carolesleynaylor.wordpress.com - naylorcl@hotmail.es
“The world may or may not be without purpose but it’s not totally without some kind of magic.” Whether you’re interested in science or logic is there a place in your heart to believe that magic can and does exist? Sophie Baker (Emma Stone The Amazing Spider Man 2012) quotes Nietzsche as saying that we need our illusions to live. Stanley’s response is categorical: We can’t go round deluding ourselves.” More importantly, what about deluding others? “Magic” is regarded as being a lightweight American romantic comedy by Woody Allen. It is not considered one of his finer films although it has been described as being accomplished and worth watching for the two main characters when they are sparring. Imagine chalk and cheese. It’s just like that. Insults bounce off each other like a ball constantly hitting a brick wall. Meagre attempts at philosophising which just skirt around the meaning of life and the purpose of existence. Not altogether convincing but entertaining to watch. Stanley is so set in his ways, a stubborn man who always has to be right. The film attempts to explore illusions, trickery, deception however you want to describe it just like A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, The Railway Man) plays an obnoxious but world-famous illusionist and the film opens with Wei Ling Soo performing to a Berlin audience in 1928, mesmerised when he makes an elephant vanish into thin air. This is Stanley Crawford, an arrogant, bitter, stuffy, egotistical and priggish man. He patronises the stage hands calling them Neanderthals and Assassins. The conductor is a blithering idiot and for the autograph hunters they are mental defectives. Watching the performance in awe is fellow illusionist and so-called friend, Harold Burkhan (Simon McBurney) who visits Stanley’s dressing room to congratulate him. His compliments are double-edged: “A genius with all the charm of a typhus epidemic.” Is this a friend speaking? Howard persuades Stanley to travel to the south of France with him, the Cote d’Azur, to abandon his fiancee Olivia and the promise of a holiday to observe a mystic who is preying on wealthy families like the Catledges. Stanley is notoriously regarded as the “greatest debunker of fake spiritualists” and he is delighted for this invitation to expose this sleezy fraudster. Visiting Provence also allows him the opportunity to visit Aunt Vanessa (Eileen Atkins), sharp-tongued and full of sarcasm for Stanley who welcomes him with the innuendo of being “boring to the point of perfection.” We do learn that Stanley had an unhappy childhood which he compares to a dark cloud that has followed him dogging his life. His life is shallow and meaningless

until his beliefs are challenged by Sophie, another lost soul subjected to a poor childhood who has found an opportunity to break free of this poverty trap with her mother to lead a life of luxury with one milksop of a man, Brice Catledge who sees her as the bees’ knees! “Sophie sees all, she can predict the future. She’s a visionary and a vision.” Is she really? Not according to Stanley! He is absolutely besotted with her and serenades her tempting her with a life of luxury: yachts, expensive designer clothes, travel around Europe. The sky’s the limit. Sophie is tempted. Allen’s views on atheism come through solidly with Stanley, a bit of a contradiction himself. Acting out of character, he attempts to pray to God for a full recovery for Aunt Vanessa who has had a serious car crash, left in a critical condition. On reflection he rejects God and admits the act of prayer is twaddle. So we are back to where we started with Stanley believing that if God doesn’t exist, Sophie must be a charlatan. Interestingly, both sell illusions but in different ways. And that’s probably where the similarity ends. They spend time together and Sophie starts to develop some romantic feelings for a man who is unable to feel emotions in a similar way. And yet, he is the one who experiences an epiphany although vulnerable and susceptible to trickery, something he should understand well. His lifelong rationalism and cynicism have been misguided. Is this what he decides? Yes his world is turned upside down but can he come out of the experience a better and wiser person? “I’m a rational man who believes in a rational world. Any other way lies madness.” Apply his logic. If you believe in magic, if you ever delude yourself you inflict insanity upon yourself? Hopefully not. Allen’s ideals are not watertight so enjoy the contrived romantic comedy and solve the riddle. How can a match made in heaven ring true for an atheist like Stanley or Allen?

Cards fall in Rosberg's favour as German wins in Bahrain
Leicester win was good reply to Premier League title pressure, says Claudio Ranieri
Leicester’s win over Southampton shows that they can cope with the pressure of moving clear at the top of Premier League, says manager Claudio Ranieri. Wes Morgan scored as the leaders earned a fourth successive 1-0 win to move seven points clear of Tottenham, who drew 1-1 at Liverpool on Saturday. The Foxes need 12 points from their final six games to guarantee the title. “Everybody is waiting for us after Tottenham’s draw. We gave a very good answer,” said Ranieri. It has yet to be decided which matches from the penultimate round
TORREVIEJA CC 83 for 10 GALWAY CC 218 for 10 After playing at La Manga the
previous day and recording a resounding victory over Torrevieja CC , Galway CC looked to continue as they faced Torrevieja again only this time at Torrevieja's home ground. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Galway started cautiously and after 10 overs , had only reached 23 albeit without loss of any wickets. Opener , John O'Brian then decided enough was enough and began to hit the ball to all points of the compass. At the other end Torrevieja were having more success claiming 3 wickets. This only brought captain Connor to the crease and he also began to punish the bowlers. John O'Brian went eventually scoring 83 and although Torrevieja claimed another 5 wickets, Connor eventually was bowled for 71. In the 40th over Galway finished on
of the Premier League season - on 7, 8 and 9 May - will be moved for television but, as it stands, this was the final time that Leicester would play their weekend match after second-placed Spurs. Knowing that Tottenham had dropped points might have increased the pressure on Ranieri’s side - but they overcame it to move closer to their first top-flight title. Leicester were 5000-1 outsiders for the title last August after narrowly avoiding relegation the previous season. Ranieri says his squad know they may not get another shot at glory. http://www.bbc.com/
218. Pick of the bowlers were Ciaran Guichard ( 3 for 12 ) Connor Wood ( 1 for 16 ) and Adam Alger ( 2 for 33 ) When Torrevieja went into bat, they started steadily and were up with the required run rate but were also losing wickets. Only Adam Alger reached double figures (39) as Torrevieja found the Galway bowlers a handful to play against. Jaffa finished with 2 for 8, Allif 6 for 18 and Phill 1 for 5. Galway players said they had enjoyed their first visit to Torrevieja and complimented the Sports Centre for their excellent facilities and the information they had received from Torrevieja Council regarding accomodation and leisure activities. Torrevieja's next game is on April 23rd when they play hosts to Valencia Star in the first league game of the season.Start at 1100hrs. Further info at Torrevieja-cricket.com.

Nico Rosberg took full advantage of misfortunes to his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel to claim an emphatic victory in the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday. With Vettel's Ferrari engine packing up on the warm-up lap Rosberg made a fine start to lead while Hamilton, slow off the grid from his 51st pole position, was the victim of a Turn One collision with Valtteri Bottas's Williams and fell to eighth. As Rosberg cruised clear to control the contest and claim his second win of the season, fifth in succession and 16th of his career, Hamilton, in a damaged car, mounted a fightback to finish third behind Kimi Raikkonen in a Ferrari, 10 seconds adrift of Rosberg. "This has been an awesome weekend for me, and it is awesome to get another win!" said 30-year-old Rosberg, clearly delighted to have a 17-points lead over Hamilton after just two races. The two Mercedes drivers had started from their eighth successive front row lockout on the grid ahead of the Ferraris of four-time champion Vettel and Raikkonen. Vettel, expected to produce a challenge to the Mercedes domination, failed to
CF MOLINA 0 MAZARRON FC 0 Mazarron went into this game without
seven regular first team players through injuries and suspensions and were forced to name two juveniles on the substitutes bench. The absence of key players showed in the first half when Mazarron were unable to make any impression on a Molina side who are struggling towards the wrong end of the league table. Molina looked the more likely to score in the opening stages with ex-Mazarron player Juanito causing problems for the makeshift Mazarron defence. Leading scorer Jose was missing the link up play with the suspended Palote and Silverio made little impression on his return to first team action. Hafid replaced Silverio at half time and Mazarron at last began to put some passes together. However, although they created a number of good chances the forwards seemed reluctant to have a shot at goal and, too often, the Molina defence was able to scramble the ball clear. Molina should have scored early in the second half but, with Antonio out of his goal, their striker delayed his shot and Mazarron scrambled the ball clear. Molina’s main threat again came from
make the start for the first time in his career after a pre-race engine failure and it was left to Raikkonen to produce his customary charging race to claim second. “It’s not too bad to finish second,” he said. “I had a bad start and we did what we could. I think we will take second today from this race.” Vettel said he was not sure of what caused his engine failure. “I don’t know why it happened, it was very unexpected,” he said. His absence and Hamilton’s clash with Bottas’s Williams took much of the heat out of the contest and allowed Rosberg a comfortable drive to 25 more points. He now has 50 to Hamilton’s 33. Bottas, who was given a drive-through penalty by the stewards for his part in the crash, finished ninth behind his Williams team-mate Brazilian Felipe Massa. read more http://en.as.com/ Juanito who was giving Jesus a torrid time in his unfamiliar position of full back. Gilberto shot over the bar and Jose was then just unable to get on the end of a right wing cross following Mazarron’s best move of the match. One of the members of the successful Juvenile squad, Andreo, came on in place of the injured Rollon and another juvenile, Eric, replaced Gilberto who had worked hard with little reward. Mazarron continued to press forward in search of a winning goal but had to settle for a single point which keeps them in fourth place in the league and three points clear of the chasing pack for the play off places in seventh, eighth and ninth places. With just seven games remaining, three of which are against teams in the top six in the league it is vital that Mazarron avoid further injuries and suspensions although Enrique’s booking at Molina was his fifth of the season and will lead to a one match ban. The 10 Most Dangerous Sections of Secondary Roads
For the thirteenth consecutive year, the EuroRAP independent consortium has published their report on the top ten high-risk locations on Spain´s secondary road network. The report is based around the number of fatal incidents for the period between 2012 and 2014, the length and type of the section of road, and the average daily traffic, known as the IMD, or Intensidad Media de Diaria de tráfico. The calculations are then based on factors such as a road with a low IMD but a high number of incidents will be classed as a higher risk than a road with
a higher IMD. In total, there are 97 routes considered, of which 18 are “black-spots”, over a total of 3,506 kilometres. The profile of the most dangerous road is a conventional single carriageway road, with junctions, and an IMD of below 10,000 vehicles per day. A section becomes extremely dangerous when there is an increase in the number of junctions, such as those adjoining properties, where vehicles join the flow of traffic but are not always able to accelerate to a safe speed. The risk factor is further increased by the mixture of road
users, including pedestrians, cyclists, agricultural machinery and other vehicles with differences in speed and physical characteristics. The condition of the road surface and the road markings also play a key role in either reducing or increasing the risk factor on these roads. Five of the ten most dangerous sections for motorcycles and mopeds are in Andalusia; followed by Catalonia with 3 and Madrid with 2. For motorcyclists, the most dangerous section is in the A-2 in Barcelona,
between kilometre markers 605 and 611. As for heavy vehicles, the stretch of the A-7 between Puzol and its junction with the A-3 in Valencia has the highest concentration of incidents. Overall, Galicia, Cataluña and Asturias have some of the most dangerous roads in the country. The number of incidents has decreased by over 40%, but the probability of an incident is three times higher than in 2010. The Basque Country, Murcia and Navarra, are the only regions where there are no sections of road classed as dangerous. The most dangerous section of road is on the N-320 between Casar de Talamanca (Guadalajara) and its crossing with the M-103 in Algete (Madrid). In this section of just 11.2 kilometres, there were 10 fatalities, 6 of whom were on motorcycles or mopeds. http://n332.es/
Bikers Seriously Injured on Tuesday
Road Death Reductions Slowing Down
A total of 26,000 people were killed in traffic related incidents on European roads in 2015, according to the latest statistics published by the European Commission, 5,500 fewer than in 2010, but “the situation has not improved” compared to 2014. In addition to those who lost their lives on the roads, the EC estimates that 135,000 people were seriously injured on the roads last year. “Every person killed or seriously injured is a victim that should have been avoided”, said the European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc during the presentation of the figures. “Over the past decades we have achieved impressive results in reducing traffic accidents with fatalities, but the current stagnation is alarming. If Europe wants to reach its goal of halving road deaths by 2020, much more needs to be done”. The average rate of road deaths in the EU in 2015 was 51 deaths per million inhabitants, the same as in the two previous years. This slowdown comes after significant reductions of down 8% in 2012 and 2013, and is mainly, according to the EC, “the greater interaction in cities among users of motorized public roads and which are not protected”. Vulnerable
road users (pedestrians, cyclists, etc.) also represent a high percentage of the 135,000 people who, according to the Commission, were injured in traffic accidents. The number of fatalities from traffic related incidents continued to vary greatly from one country to another, although these differences tend to decrease. Spain is in fifth position with 36 deaths per million inhabitants, identical to the previous year but 32% lower than 2010. The figure in the UK is 29 deaths per million inhabitants and sits in fourth place. Malta is number one with 26 deaths per million, followed by Sweden with 27 and the Netherlands with 28 d e a t h s per million inhabitants. h t t p:// n332.es/
A motorcyclist became trapped under a car on Tuesday afternoon following a collision with the vehicle on the N-332 near the Camping La Marina holiday resort in La Marina on the coast of the Elche municipality. The incident occurred shortly after midday when the rider was thrown from the motorbike following a collision and became trapped by the lower limbs underneath the car. Fire fighters from Elche attended the scene and lifted the vehicle, allowing medical staff to take the biker to hospital suffering leg injuries but in a conscious state.
Later that night, medics in the Murcia region attended another motorcyclist who had been injured, this time in the Agridulce urbanisation area on the A-7 motorway. This incident occurred at around 22:50 when calls were received by the emergency coordination centre of a motorcyclist heading in the Almería direction having collided with the crash barrier and being thrown from the vehicle. After emergency medics had stabilised the man at the scene he was taken to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in a serious condition.

The Future is footgolf!!!!
Footgolf is the latest sport taking the world by storm, believed to originate in South America in 2006. It is said to be the fastest growing sport in the world today. 2 years ago the first Footgolf course opened in the Uk, by end 2016 it is estimated there will be over 250 Golf courses offering Footgolf, and over 70 courses converted to Footgolf exclusively. Footgolf is sweeping across the world, and has become the fastest growing sport today. In January 2016 the first annual Footgolf world cup was held in Argentina, teams from over 41 countries took part, and the cup was won by America. Footgolf is played on a golf course using sizes 3, 4 and 5 footballs depending on the age of the player. The object of the game is to get the ball into a 53cm wide by 40cm deep hole using only your feet in the fewest number of shots possible. Footgolf has the same rules as Golf, except the maximum number of kicks is 10 per hole, The great thing about Footgolf is it’s a game that can be played by the whole family without breaking the bank. John Willmott and Darren Scopes created Footgolf Costa Blanca in August 2015 after taking up the sport in the UK. Having owned a villa on the Costa Blanca for 12 years they
saw the opportunity to bring this great family sport, that can be played by all ages young and old to the coast. Footgolf Costa Blanca currently operate from El Plantio, Golf resort in Alicante, Located 5km from the airport, just off the A-79 Alicante road, making this the ideal location. Footgolf Costa Blanca intend to operate at 5 separate locations up and down the coast, allowing everyone on the Costa Blanca easy access to the joys of Footgolf.

World Twenty20 final: Ben Stokes not to blame for England defeat - Morgan
Captain Eoin Morgan insists Ben Stokes is not to blame for England’s dramatic loss to West Indies in Sunday’s World Twenty20 final. Stokes bowled the last over with the Windies needing 19 to win, only for Carlos Brathwaite to smash four sixes off the first four balls. “It’s not his fault,” Morgan said of allrounder Stokes. “We’re all in this together, we enjoy our wins and we suffer with our losses so the pain will be shared tonight.” Stokes looked forlorn after Brathwaite’s heroics, the England allrounder crouching on the ground with his head in his hands as the rest of the West Indies team stormed onto the pitch to celebrate an unlikely victory. “Cricket can be a cruel game,” added Morgan. “He is going to be devastated. It’ll take its toll in the next couple of days, but we share everything we do, we stick together as a side. We share pain, we share the success. I hope in the future we have a lot more success.” Stokes later tweeted: “Overwhelmed by all the support of everyone after a disappointing last over. “So proud to have represented my country in a World Cup final. To everyone who has supported us, thank you very much you’ve been awesome. Congrats to the West Indies on winning a great final.” Writing in the Daily Telegraph, former England captain Michael Vaughan said Stokes will be “hurting for a long time”. He added: “As a captain you try to talk from the
heart to someone in Stokes’s position and put an arm around the shoulder. You tell them they will be back stronger for the experience. But Stokes is not the sort of lad to take that kind of stuff. “He will be spewing for a long while so you have to allow him time to hurt. He will lose sleep for days going over it in his mind, asking: ‘Why didn’t I do something different?’ The good thing is that Stokes is young and has experienced highs and lows in his career already so he will be able to handle this in time.” Marlon Samuels, whose 85 not out from 66 balls laid the foundation for Brathwaite’s winning runs, made a few digs at Stokes in a post-match news conference that saw the man of the match sit with his feet up on the table the entire time. Samuels was fined 30% of his match fee by the International Cricket Council for “using abusive and offensive language” towards the England man, with whom he had already clashed during England’s Test
series against West Indies last year. “Well, he does not learn. I keep telling him whenever we play against each other: ‘Do not speak to me because I’m going to perform’. I didn’t even face a ball and he had so much to say today,” Samuels said. “Stokes is a nervous lad you know. What I told Brathwaite was: ‘He’s going to bowl a couple of full tosses as always.’ It worked in our favour and Brathwaite played a brilliant knock there.” England had given themselves a great chance of victory after slipping to 23-3 in the fifth over after being put in to bat. Joe Root scored 54 and Jos Buttler added 36 as they made 155-9 off their 20 overs. They then had the West Indies in trouble, reducing them to 11-3 before Samuels hit form, finishing unbeaten on 85, while Brathwaite, who took 3-23 when England batted, ended 34 not out. http://www.bbc.com/
